A heart of gold By Jolene Ogle A NOOSAVILLE man who died in a motorbike accident on Sunday has been remembered as one of a kind, a man with a heart of gold. Andy Meek died when his bike crashed in the Mary Valley near Imbil on 9 October about 10.30am. Police reported it appeared Mr Meek failed to make a left-hand turn at the bend and had gone over the embankment. According to Senior Constable Bill Greer Queensland Ambulance Services and the rescue flight helicopter responded to the crash, but after working on him for “a considerable amount of time”, Mr Meek died at the scene from his injuries. Members of the Forensic Crash Unit are still investigating at the scene, but friends of Mr Meek’s have remembered him as an outstanding man. Mr Meek trained at Combat Self Defence with Shihan Martin Day, who has remembered him as “one-of-akind” who will be sorely missed. “I first met Andy just over six years ago when he came along to train with us ... along with his best mate and fellow 2nd Dan Black Belt Joe Dawe,” Mr Day said. “Andy was a big man not only in physique but also in his heart. His biceps were as big as my thighs and he had to walk almost sideways to get through doors as he had a 60-inch plus chest!” Mr Day said the dentist and former competitive bodybuilder was always happy, had a heart of gold and possessed drive, determination and professionalism in everything he did. “He will be sorely missed by his fellow dental staff and all of his patients,” Mr Day said. Mr Day said Andy was an accom-

him to all of the students aged seven to 64 years old. Mr Day said everyone seemed to gel to Andy and often spoke of how gentle and polite he was. “We are all so sad that Andy has gone and our condolences go to his wife Gill, their families and friends,” Mr Day said. “Going to miss him a lot.”

Walkout on the protesters By Jolene Ogle THE feud between the Sunshine Hospice and its former volunteers came to a dramatic end on the weekend, with the Katie Rose Cottage committee walking out on a special meeting. There were emotional scenes outside the meeting room at the Big Pineapple, Nambour, on Saturday 8 October with the media and non-financial members excluded from the meeting called by disguntled charity volunteers who want the board to step down. Those interested chose instead to stand at the windows and watch on as the financial members held a vote of no confidence and fielded motions to install temporary board members. The Katie Rose Cottage Committee (KRC committee) called the special meeting three weeks ago to hold a vote of no confidence against the current board, calling for them to stand down - but left the meeting after what they believed was an invalid vote. Vote scrutineer Marcia Vickers, who is aligned with the KRC committee, said the group walked out of the meeting because they believed a number of “irregularities made the vote invalid. “The numbers of the ballot were irregular based on the number of people who were present and the number of (proxy votes) filed, she said. Ms Vickers said there were also “irregularities with the Sunshine
Hospice membership registry. Ms Vickers said the committee was entitled to view the membership register on the day notice was given for the special meeting, and as three weeks notice was required to call an extraordinary meeting, only people who were registered as financial members 21-days before the meeting could vote in the meeting held on Saturday 8 October. Ms Vickers said the committee members who attended the Sunshine Hospice offices to view the membership register were only shown a list of names rather than the official register. “The KRC committee were not shown the register, they were shown a list of names and the people who saw the list were told there were 73 financial members as of that day, she said. “Today we showed up and were told there were 98 financial members and then when I went into the room to scrutineer the formal voting, I was shown a formal registration list of members by the auditor that now has 99 members as of this morning. “Now, the 99th member, we admit, is someone who is voting with us, but that is an irregularity as well and we want this election to be totally accurate, correct, within the law and above board. “This board is willing to cut corners every which way, including when running an election. We have just walked out. Sunshine Hospice chairman Frank Lewins said he believed mem-
bers could renew their membership right up until the start of the meeting, confirming a financial member was added to the registry the day of the special meeting. “We’re entitled to accept a renewal of membership of someone who is not financial, you can do it right up until the time of the meeting, he said. Mr Lewins said this late membership also accounted for a small sum of money that was seen placed under a notebook on the desk where the board members sat during the meeting. Mr Lewins accused the KRC committee of purposely “spoiling the meeting because they knew they would be “defeated. “This bares out a pattern of this spoiling tactic and whether this was orchestrated, because they knew they were going to be defeated, he said. Mr Lewins said there was an issue with the voting as there was one extra vote in the ballot box compared to the number of registered voters, but Ms Vickers was “standing on ceremony by calling for the vote to be marked as invalid because the single extra vote made no difference to the outcome. Mr Lewins said the current board had remained intact and the motions to elect new directors were defeated. Mr Lewins said he didn’t know what the final vote count was as he “didn’t see the ballot papers but said the auditor who conducted the count said there was a “clear difference in the votes, meaning there

Looking to the future, Mr Lewins said the Sunshine Hospice Board is in talks with an allied health body to help create a private health facility and the partnership is “poised right
on the edge with a joint statement to be released as soon as the end of the month. The KRC committee said they would take their complaints to the Australian Charities and Not-ForProfits Commission (ACNC) and ASIC.
Two hospices on the horizon By Jolene Ogle IT LOOKS like the wider Sunshine Coast community will be the winner after the almost six-month feud between the Sunshine Hospice board and former volunteers ended on Saturday 8 October. The local region could now get two hospices after the Sunshine Hospice Board, who formerly operated the Doonan palliative facility, said they expected to announce a partnership to create a private hospital palliative care facility. The group of former hospice volunteers, now known as the Katie Rose Cottage Committee (KRC Committee), has also announced big plans for a community-based, volunteer-run facility. The KRC Committee appears to have been beaten in the special meeting that was called to hold a vote of
no confidence in the current board but, while the final voting outcome has not been officially released to the media or public, committee spokesperson Carol Raye said it didn't matter because “we’re all winners today. “We still win today as an organisation. Today, I announce the start of the Katie Rose Cottage. It’s going to be a new charity and it will have nothing to do with (the Sunshine Hospice board). It will have its own money, she said. Pledge letters have already been sent out into the community and Ms Raye said the committee will continue negotiations to buy the Doonan site where the original community hospice facility was. “What I can promise you today is that without those board members, and under a new board and a new charity called Katie Rose Cottage, we will bring this community a new
hospice, she said. “We will bring outreach services. We will bring counselling services and we will do it as quickly as possible. We ask all of the community to come on board and support us. Original Katie Rose Cottage co-founder Sue Story said she was pleased the legacy of the community hospice facility would continue. “We will care for the dying in our community from now, she said. Meanwhile, in a statement to the media prior to the meeting, Sunshine Hospice chairman Frank Lewins said the board would move ahead with plans for a private hospital facility, meaning Sunshine Coast residents could have two hospices instead of none. “The Sunshine Hospice Ltd Board intends to reopen the Sunshine Hospice with the support of the whole Sunshine Coast community
The Katie Rose Cottage Committee and supporters said "we're all winners" despite the outcome of the special meeting held on Saturday 8 October, with plans to re-open a community-based, volunteer-run hospice. when sufficient funds are available to allow continuous operations without the threat of another closure, he said. “It is the board’s intention to reopen a hospice that is loving and caring and provides out guests with

Feud waits on a decision By Hollie Harris THE long-awaited end to the feud between multi-million dollar Acres development owner and Noosa council will have to wait for a decision on the future of the site. Owner Ralph Rogers has previously been served a show cause notice for planning breaches. The final outcome was due to be addressed at Tuesday’s council meeting but has been moved to Monday’s general meeting. Mr Rogers has criticised The Noosa Plan for being “out-ofdate” and non-reflective of changing times. Mayor Tony Wellington said on Tuesday that he was aware that the retail industry is changing. “The nature of retail demands
that council become adaptable to that changing nature. “Providing mixed services, such as Acres, is probably an early indicator of what retail is going to have to be thinking of into the future. “There are empty shopping centres across many Western cultures now, so these more holistic, lifestyle oriented centres are what we should be looking at encouraging. “We do have a planning scheme which was written 10 years ago, which does, unfortunately, make it difficult for these types of developments, however, we have a historical issue here – this property is zoned as residential,” Mr Wellington said. The current council planning scheme is due to be reviewed in 2017.
The multi-use site is challenging Noosa’s planning scheme to move with the times.

Commonwealth Games,” Maryann said. “To some people this is just a craft, but for so many people all around the world, this brings a huge healing connection,” she said. This collection of stars will go on to join many other collections from around Australia which will eventually make up a count of 1 million to be showcased at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018.
Council meeting moved NOOSA Council will hold its ordinary meeting in Cooroy in October to give local residents a chance to meet the mayor and councillors to see how the council makes its decisions. The ordinary meeting – the last meeting in each meeting cycle – will be held at Cooroy Sports Hub, 5 Opal Street, Cooroy, on 20 October. The council has held several of its ordinary meetings in different parts of the shire since 2014 to make it easier for residents in those areas to attend and see how the council works. All of the elected local government representatives will be present at the Cooroy ordinary meeting – Mayor Tony Wellington, Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie and councillors Jess Glasgow, Ingrid Jackson, Joe Jurisevic, Frank Pardon and Brian Stockwell. Senior council staff will also be in attendance. The actual meeting starts at 6pm with meet-and-greet sessions beforehand from 5pm and after the meeting from approximately 6.30pm. Contact the council for more information on 5329 6500.
Graffiti charges
By Hollie Harris THE Noosa Civic was seeing stars last week when 10,000 woven stars were strung and hoisted up in the food court as a part of The One Million Stars to End Violence project. Project founder Maryann Talia Pau stood proudly beneath the stars which represent the countless hours the community has put in to help raise awareness about violence. Her vision to begin this project of working in communities to weave stars against violence came into reality when she was inspired by a quote by Dr Martin Luther King Jnr. “Returning hate for hate only multiplies hate and in deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that,” Maryann said. “This is about not needing a tragedy to bring people together; it is to say to somebody that your safety and your wellbeing are important. “I am so excited that the light and the love and the courage from this community here at Noosa is going to be a part of the amazing installation at the
INBRIEF
DISCUSSIONS between Noosa MP Glen Elmes, councillor Ingrid Jackson and Kevin Hegarty, chief executive of Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service, have led to the appointment of a Noosa representative on the Community Reference Group of the new public Sunshine Coast University Hospital. The 15-member group is made up of local health users, health providers and residents from across the Sunshine Coast and Gympie regions. It was formed in 2010 to help plan and inform the community about the $1.97 billion public hospital which is due to open in April 2017 at Birtinya, near Kawana. “We are very pleased that Noosa resident Jo Searle has been selected to represent Noosa on
the SCUH Community Reference Group,” Mr Elmes said. Cr Jackson said Ms Searle will play a vital role for Noosa in providing community feedback on the project and making Noosa residents more aware. Ms Searle, who lives in Noosaville and is an active member of the Noosa Outrigger Canoe Club, has a background in community engagement and project management. “I’m excited about the new leading edge hospital and about this opportunity to keep the Noosa community informed and get resident feedback,” Ms Searle said. “I’ll be attending my first meeting in November.” Residents can contact Jo Searle at noosaideas.scuhospital@gmail. com.
PHOTOGRAPHS published in Noosa Today on 29 September showing graffiti on the boarded-up walls of the former Noosa Bowls Club have led to the arrest of a Cooroy teenager. Police charged the 15-year-old with graffiti offences after the tags shown in the photo were matched to the teen’s known tag. Police said a book with the teen’s work and “graffiti implements” were also found on him. Noosa Heads acting officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Peter Feldman said the arrest was a result of excellent police work. The youth has also been charged with additional graffiti offences after more tags were found near the Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving Club beach tower. Inquiries into other possible taggers at the former Noosa Bowls site are continuing.
Number plates nicked POLICE are warning motorists to keep an eye on their cars following a spate of number plate thefts over the past week. Police said at least three plates had been stolen over the past seven days, sparking concerns about what the stolen plates will be used for. Senior Sergeant Peter Feldman said residents who park their cars in the street should keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour and can contact their local car dealership to see if they can fit one-way anti-theft number plate screws. The thefts were from vehicles and a trailer from Tewantin to Noosa Waters.

A woman of influence By Hollie Harris NUTRITIONIST and founder of Changing Habits, Cyndi O’Meara has been named in this year’s The Australian Financial Review and Westpac’s 100 Women of Influence Awards. The awards are in their fifth year and have a cross-section of finalists including television personality Lisa Wilkinson, mining magnate Gina Rinehart and threetime Paralympic swimmer Ellie Cole. Cyndi O’Meara is one of 12 finalists in the Business Enterprise category. “It is very humbling and a real honour to be named one of the 100 Women of Influence in Australia. It is great to be recognised for my 30 years of nutritional experience and commitment to educating people to improve their health by eating real food,” Cyndi said. Awards judge Paul Robertson said that many people tended to concentrate on negativity and problems. “Here is a bunch of women who are extremely optimistic and throwing themselves into a massive amount of work to really make a difference," Mr Robertson said. Earlier this year, Cyndi O’Meara also won the Sustainable Business Woman of the Year 2016 awarded by Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network. “As one of my tasks, I hope to spend this year making some inroads into the Sunshine Coast Council to ban the use of the herbicide glyphosate. She recently launched a new Australian made documentary ‘What’s With Wheat?’ which spills the beans on the devastating effect wheat is having on our nation’s health. TAIT Duke Cottage is on track to become the house the community built, with local businesses coming together to help support the 10 trainees restoring the 98-year-old historic home. An initiative of Noosa Council and United Synergies, the restoration of the iconic Tewantin building will see it turned it into a shared space for the whole community built by the construction trainees, aged from 15 to 55 years. Supervisor Scott McKenzie spoke highly of the trainees who are working hard to learn the skills needed to enter the construction industry and said they all possessed a passion to see the building restored for the community. “They are all very, very talented,” he said. “Most of the work you see has been done by the trainees and they’re doing an amazing job.” But the project needs the support of major business to help make the dream a reality. Coming to the aid of the restoration is major construction company Hutchinson Builders, who have come on board as one of the main supporters of the project. Michael Michell of Hutchinson Builders said since establishing on the coast 12 years ago, the team at Hutchinsons had always had a love for the community and community-based projects. Mr Michell said a lot of Hutchin-

Hutchies will continue to make sure we have a presence in Noosa,” he said. “The perception is that Hutchies is a ‘big builder’ but we are still flexible enough in our structure to build a set of stairs on a house right up to any larger projects such as the new Youi call centre in Sippy Downs. “Hutchies are actively looking at supporting local community organisations - when Hutchies moves into a re-
gional area we set down roots.” Many of the trainees taking part in the 19-week construction program have had the chance to learn new skills from Hutchinson Builders’ team members and will take part in an industry night later this month that has been organised by Hutchinson Builders and will allow the trainees to present themselves to potential employers. Hutchinson Builders have also called on some of their suppliers to help keep the project going. Hanson Concrete, Mesh and Bar, Gowan Lea, Kennards Hire, Bunnings, Austral Masonary, Hitec Glazing and IRT Demolition, are just some of the suppliers who have generously donated to the construction and restoration of the Tait Duke Community Cottage; the cottage the community built.

Youth tapped for plan COUNCIL is asking young people what they’d like to see included in Noosa’s next planning scheme, the new Noosa Plan. Community engagement manager Debra Bambrook is visiting the shire’s secondary schools, asking students to share their views through either photographs, feedback forms or via an online forum, now open on council’s YourSay Noosa website (yoursay. noosa.qld.gov.au). “It’s easy to take part. We’re asking the students to capture, in a photograph, or in words, the things they love
about Noosa and then submit their suggestions to council,” she said. Students who take part have a chance to win a movie screening with nine of their friends. “Young people are Noosa’s future. The decisions we make today about future planning and the look and feel of the area will directly affect them, so it’s important they be involved in the process with an opportunity to have a say,” Ms Bambrook said. “We will consider all of the photographs and comments students provide together with
all of the feedback we receive during the upcoming shirewide public consultation process.” Everybody can have a say on the New Noosa Plan online from 21 October, as well as at information pop-ups, both at Cooroy and Noosaville libraries, and staffed pop-ups at various locations across the shire. Noosa’s new planning scheme will guide future development in the shire through the next 10 years and beyond. TEENAGERS as young as 14 are being punched, kicked and robbed as police warn of out-of-control beach parties throughout the Sunshine Coast, but police say Noosa’s beaches have not been affected. Officers from the Sunshine Coast Child Protection and Investigation Unit (CPIU) have investigated a number of recent assault and robbery offences that have stemmed from large-scale teen parties on beaches at Wurtulla and Mudjimba. A number of youths have been charged with offences ranging from negligent act causing harm, assault occasioning bodily harm and robbery in company using personal violence. Detective Senior Sergeant Phil Hurst, officer-in-charge of the Sunshine Coast CPIU said officers had noticed a recent increase in the popularity of beach parties for youth in the area with an increase in assault and property offences. “These parties often seem to have little or no adult supervision, and anytime this happens when you have very large numbers of teenagers
Beachside residents are urged to contact police if they notice youth parties on the beach after dark. out late at night with some consuming alcohol, problems can occur,” he said. “We’ve had teens punched, kicked and robbed, a girl injured from something thrown on a bon-fire and a boy knocked unconscious. All of these are separate and serious incidents.” Sen Sgt Hurst said the incidents were occurring between 8.30-9pm, not at 2am or 3am and some of the victims and offenders are aged as young as 14. Police have stepped up night patrols of beach areas by both uniformed and plain clothes officers, with Wurtulla Beach appearing to be the area most affected by large-scale parties and violence.
Noosa Heads acting officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Peter Feldman said there had been no complaints of beach parties on any of Noosa’s beaches, but urged residents to remain vigilant. “I encourage residents living near the beach area that if they do see youths congregating to let the police know,” he said. “We would rather know about any issues before they occur rather than after things get out of hand.” Anyone with information that could assist in any of the matters should contact Crime Stoppers anonymously via 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au 24-hours a day.

Harvesting fruits of labour By Hollie Harris NOOSA Community Gardens are about to harvest the hardearned fruits of their labour for the season and are proud of what they have been able to grow since re-locating in July. The garden is part of a community group who pay a small yearly membership and meet on Fridays to work and at the end of the day, share out the abundance of produce with each other. This is a wonderful community project where a little bit of work yields the rewards of fresh, local grown produce to take home. The group enjoys regular morning teas and they are very grateful to all of their sponsors who help keep this garden flourishing. United Synergies, Slow Food Noosa and Noosa Council play an important part in bringing this flourishing garden to life and the group also earn some extra change from plant sales and Bunnings sausage sizzles. The group meets on Fridays at 8.30am at the garden located in Earl Street, Tewantin. They garden as a group and each session is finished off with a chat, sharing of produce and morning tea for a gold coin donation. If you would like to become a member, head down to Earl Street any Friday between 8.30-11am or contact Judy Pratt on 0422 828 564.

And the boom keeps going By Hollie Harris
The team worked hard to re-locate the gardens, which are almost ready to harvest.
Take home an armful of goodness each Friday.
NOOSAVILLE business owners will hear first-hand why present boom times are set to continue when Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham speaks at the Noosaville Business Association annual general meeting on Wednesday 19 October. With businesses enjoying an unbroken influx of visitors, Mr Massingham will detail how visitor numbers are running 15 per cent up on last year and visitor spending is up 23 per cent. He will then turn his attention to the year ahead and outline what business owners can expect from the tourism body – the main driver for the current stunning visitor numbers – as Tourism Noosa develops its next five-year plan. The meeting begins at 5.30pm at the Noosa Boathouse and will be followed by a Business After 5 meet-and-greet networking function at which the association will provide a first free drink for those who have attended the meeting. Please email contact@noosavillebusinessassociation.org.au if you would like to attend the networking function for catering purposes.

On top of the cycling world Ron Lane’s
people IT WAS in the year 2001 that a Victorian lady, like so many thousands before her relocated to our beautiful town of Noosa Heads. After settling quietly into our town, Julia Emblin, some 15 years later, has made her mark in her chosen sport of cycling (Masters Division) by winning the 2016 Gran Fondo World Championship in Perth last month. She won Japan’s Niseko Classic in July, the last of 14 qualifiers for this year’s UCI Granfondo World Championships. This event is definitely one of international renown but relatively unknown to most of our people. This reality is not surprising for Julia, like so many others who reach the top in their chosen sport. It gives one the feeling that to her personal satisfaction is more important than public acclaim. This, it seems, is a common factor among many of our great sporting achievers in Noosa shire. Julia hails from the town of Drouin in Gippsland Victoria. She was educated at Drouin High School, and as one of six kids, spent her early years living on her parents’dairy farm. “It was at this stage that the bike really entered my life for the first time, because at five years of age, I started to ride my bike to school. In those days, in country areas, this sort of thing was common.’’ Julia entered the work force at 16 years of age and worked on several jobs until the age of 19. She then moved to Melbourne and commenced working as a receptionist for an architect. “I found I enjoyed this as it gave me the opportunity to meet all types of people from all walks of life.” In later years, Julia took the big step of going into business for herself when she opened the High Street Cafe in Melbourne. This was for the next 14 years to become her life. “As you can imagine running a cafe for seven days a week for 14 years everything was full-on. Add to this, I was also a single mum raising an eight-year-old daughter from an early marriage.” However, it was during this period, that when time permitted she went on cycling and camping holidays; this was to give Julia her first real taste of cycling. “Here was something that I really enjoyed – in fact you could say I loved it.” Then in 2001 she made the big move and shifted to Noosa; and in 2002 remarried. “It was also about
Julia Enblin at her home. this time that Julia joined the Sunshine Coast Cycling Club. After having a good look at proceedings, she began to contest the road racing events in her age category. “Regarding my coaching, well that came from some wonderful and very helpful local riders.” As in all sport, when it comes to training, mental attitude and preparation is of the utmost importance. To settle into the world of competition Julia had no false illusions. “You have to be prepared to put in the hours and the hard work; a 5/6 day training week with 12 to 14 hours on the road. “When you know that you have put in the hours and done the miles, you know you will do well; to me, this is the major part, being mentally prepared. Also a lot of our road races are 100 plus kilometres, so your preparation must be balanced.” For Julie, her list of achievements in the World Ladies Masters Road Cycling Championships is indeed outstanding. “I suppose as an athlete you always remember your first major win; and for me it was winning the Australian Ladies Masters Road Race 50-55 in Adelaide in 2005.” This was to be just the start of what has become an incredible record: Austria 2007, third in the time trials; Sydney Australia 2011 won the road race and time trial; 2012 South Africa, again won both and 2015 Denmark saw her finish third in the road race.
Julia cycling through Japan with a friend. The selection criteria to contest these events are in itself an achievement. To be eligible the rider must finish in the top 25 per cent in their age group of a major event. For Julia, 2016 was truly outstanding. To qualify for the Worlds in Perth, she travelled to Japan to contest the last of the qualifiers. Not only did she win this, but made it a double by returning to Australia and winning the big one in Perth, the Ladies 60-64 World Masters Championship. Add to this, her results down through the years in the Noosa Triathlon and you have a record second to none. As Julia reflects on the many hours and miles she has spent on the roads in both training and competing, there is one point that makes this quiet achiever very angry. That is the lack of respect that an alarming num-

ber of motorists have for cyclists. “Some motorists show a total lack of respect and caring for a fellow human being, (road cyclists) their attitude to road safety is really bad. When approaching a group of cyclists, because they are crouched over their bikes, and wearing safety helmet, you can’t identify them.’’ “Motorists should remember that one of them may be your barber, the nurse who helped you at your local hospital or even a friend – you just don’t know.” Julia summed it up beautifully when she described it as being, “A case of “Big vs Little, “the big family four wheel drive loaded with Mum, Dad and the kids versus the person on a small light road bike. To understand fully her concern regarding this matter, you only have to look at the bike accident statics for
2013. According to a report tabled in that year, 14 people were killed and many riders were seriously injured in Australia. Let’s be honest, I am sure we have at some time heard one of our friends say, “I hate those bloody bike riders.” The Aussie sport lover shows support and respect to our footballers and our surfing champions. Because the bikers don’t wear football boots or have sand between their toes does not mean they don’t deserve the same respect. Julia first became more aware of this situation after she learnt about an organisation, the A.G.F. This group, the Amy Gillett Foundation, began its work in 2006. In 2005 while cycling with the Australian Womens Road Cycle Team in Germany, Amy Gillett died as a result of injuries sustained when hit by a motorist. Ever since its foundation Julia has been a strong supporter, helping whenever she can. A special lead-up event to the A.G.F. Cycle Classic of September 13 2006, saw Julia and many others take part in a big fund-raising challenge to help the A.G.F. raise $100,000. This money was to invest in educational program initiatives to create a safer environment for riding (in Australia.) Then again in 2009, Julia showed her support for the A.G.F. by taking part in another fund-raising ride from Canberra to Melbourne. A voice that speaks strongly in support of Julia’s plea for a change of attitude regarding road safety is Russell Harrop. Father of Luke Harrop, the young tri-athlete of international standing, tragically killed by a motorist, Russell said, “I totally support Julia’s call for a better and safer passage for our cyclists. While travelling Europe some time ago, I saw the courtesy and respect shown to cyclists in the Swiss Alps. I cannot see any reason why we can’t educate our motorists to adopt the same attitude.” Russell, whose entire family features heavily in the past history of the Noosa Heads Surf Life SavingClub and the Noosa Tri added, “It was a common sight in the Alps. Motorists pulling over to the side of the road, winding down their windows and calling out, good luck, as the riders passed on the climb. If they can show that courtesy – why can’t we. It is good to hear someone with Julia’s reputation and experience speaking up about something that is so important, and above all, life-threatening.” Julia Emblin: she rides, she trains, she competes, and she wins; and still finds time to care about others. Proud to say, she’s one of Our People.

Putting the bite on mozzies NOOSA Council is urging residents to fight back against mosquitoes in their backyard, after the recent rainfall has led to increased breeding. Noosa Council Waste and Environmental Health Manager Wayne Schafer said the wet weather and warm temperatures made for ideal breeding conditions. While council will start aerial treatments in early November to treat known local mosquito breeding sites, such as tidal areas and swamps, residents could help put the brakes on mosquitoes by removing fresh and stagnant water from their yards. “Some mosquitoes breed efficiently after rainfall, es-
pecially the common banded mosquito (Culex annulirostris), the most common in south east Queensland,” Mr Schafer said. “This mosquito breeds in shallow freshwater pools as well as in grassy drains and depressions in rural areas or suburbs with open space, which includes most of Noosa Shire. These mosquitoes are known to carry diseases which can be transmitted to humans and pets.” Mosquitoes will breed in almost any site or container holding water in most locations including in backyards. Places they breed include: unused tyres, bromeliad plants, water features, gutters,
ponds, birdbaths, neglected swimming pools, unscreened rainwater tanks, buckets and containers, blocked roof gutters, boats, pot plant bases and drains. Mr Schafer urged all residents to regularly flush out ponds and bird baths and remove areas where stagnant water could collect to eliminate breeding sites. He also urged the use of repellents, light clothing to cover arms and legs, and keeping screen doors and windows closed. For more information about mosquitoes, visit: www. qld.gov.au/health/conditions/ all/prevention/mosquitoborne Brit Drummond and Cathy Harrison are getting into the spirit for the Mexican Fiesta this weekend.

Desiree and Judy from Boomerang Bags with Darren and Debbie from Coco Bay Resort, home of the new borrow and bring back bag scheme.
Avoiding the plastic trap By Hollie Harris BOOMERANG Bags is trialling a new angle by introducing borrow and bring back bags to self-contained holiday apartments around Noosa. While lots of locals are getting into the habit of taking their own re-usable bags with them when they go to the shops, holidaymakers tend to leave their bags at home and find it hard to avoid the plastic trap when out food shopping. Boomerang Bags Noosa volunteer Desiree said having the bags at the apartments raised awareness of their mission to rid the Noosa Shire of
single-use plastic bags and offers a sustainable alternative. “Let’s get Noosa green,” Desiree said. The bags will now be available for guests at Coco Bay Resort in Noosaville and managers Darren and Debbie are happy to support the move to green. “We see a lot of waste. With so many guests at this time of year shopping and leaving the plastic bags in the units for others to use and the next guests doing the same, we pull out drawer loads of them,” Darren said. The bags are hung up in
the self-contained units with a notice explaining how the Boomerang Bags work. “It should be very effective seeing as visitors have to take them back to the unit and not return them to the shop,” Darren said. The plan is to encourage as many Noosa resorts as possible to get on board with this plastic-free strategy. If you are interested in joining the mission to rid Noosa of plastic bags, get onto the Boomerang Bags Noosa Facebook page or find more information on www. boomerangbags.org.

rental market
Navigating the rental storm SUMMER is just around the corner which means the storm season is also on its way.
longer required to pay rent.
Sometimes damage to a rental is unavoidable in times of natural disaster, but who’s responsible for the clean-up and repairs?
The property is partially damaged, can rent be reduced? If a property is damaged, the landlord and the tenant can come to an agreement to reduce the rent until the premises are returned to the condition prior to the disaster. The agreement should be put in writing and signed by all parties. If an agreement can’t be reached between the parties about a reduction in rent, or the amount of the decrease, then the RTA’s free dispute resolution service may be able to assist. Under the Act, tenants may ask for a rent reduction if:
The Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) has answered the top five questions for what to do when disaster strikes.
Cleaning - who’s responsible? The landlord is responsible for the maintenance and repairs needed to bring the property back to a livable condition, as well as fences, gardens and pools. These repairs need to comply with health and safety laws. The tenant is responsible for removing or cleaning their possessions. Landlords and tenants are encouraged to communicate with each other over the clean-up.
· The premises are partly unfit to live in. · If services, facilities or goods to be pro-
vided to the tenant are no longer available.
· If the amenity or standard of the premises decreases substantially, so long as the damage was not caused by the tenant.
Can the tenant stop paying rent if the property is damaged? A tenancy agreement does not automatically end as a result of flooding (or natural disaster), even if the premises are totally destroyed. A tenant or landlord must give the other party a notice formally ending the agreement because the property is not livable. This notice will end the tenancy agreement on the day the notice is served. However, notice must be given within one month of the disaster occurring. Once the correct notice has been given, the agreement is ended and the tenant is no
How do I end a tenancy agreement because the property is unlivable? A tenancy agreement is ended by either the landlord giving the tenant a Notice to Leave (Form 12), or by the tenant giving the landlord a Notice of Intention to Leave (Form 13) on the grounds of non-livability. Download these forms from the website rta. qld.gov.au or call the RTA on 1300 366 311 to request forms. The notice must be given within one month of the disaster occurring.
What is non-livability?
Ever wondered who cleans up after a natural disaster? A property is considered unlivable if it has been destroyed, or made unfit to live in, for reasons other than a breach by the tenant or landlord. The premises may be considered unlivable when the property has become unsafe for health and safety reasons. However, each situation needs to be considered on a case-by-case basis. People
should also consider what outcome they’re after, for example does a tenant wish to end the tenancy and leave, or stay but negotiate some rent relief. For further information or to access forms mentioned, visit the RTA website www.rta. qld.gov.au
Now may be the time to increase the rent of dollars per year due to missed rental increases.
YOUR investment property has been successfully tenanted for years but are you receiving the right returns?
Rental prices should only be increased if they are justified. The easiest way to tell if it’s time to raise the rent is to get your property manager to complete a CMA. A CMA or comparative market analysis is an in-depth analysis of the local market which compares like-for-like properties that are available for rent and properties that have been recently rented. It is also a good way for your property manager to justify any increases with a tenant.
Landlords often fall into the trap of renewing a tenants’ lease at the same price without reviewing the market. You could be potentially missing out on thousands

Rental increases should generally be done in smaller increments rather than one large amount to avoid shocking the tenants. A reasonable tenant will understand small rental increases but a large increase may force them to move. A happy tenant is always the best type of tenant so raising rents and still keeping them $10 per week below the market is often a good strategy. The RTA or Residential Tenancies Authority has very strict rules around rent increases: 1. They must be at least six months since the tenancy started or the rent changed.
30 NOOSA TODAY | Thursday, 13 October, 2016
Is it time to up the rent? 2. Rent cannot be increased during a fixed-term agreement unless it is stated in the agreement and even then two months notice in writing must be given. 3. Rent can be increased in a periodic agreement by giving two months notice in writing.
Rent increases (and decreases) are simply part of the real estate cycle. As property prices go up, rental prices generally go up too so it is important as an investor to maximise your returns. - Patrick Sherwood, property management expert

Walk leaves trail of cash THE Great Noosa Trail Walk 2016 held on the first weekend in October was a huge success, with tickets booked out months in advance. This year over a 150 walkers and volunteer guides tiptoed through the Noosa Hinterland, taking only pictures and leaving only footprints while on the trails. They experienced some of the very best of Noosa Hinterland’s nature, culture and communities. Event founder Shaun Walsh said the event was an exceptional opportunity to inject a bit of extra life into the smaller towns along the way. “Over the three days, walkers stop at Cooroy, Pomona, Cooran and Kin Kin, and we conservatively estimate that over $40,000 is injected back into the local economy to businesses and community groups,” Mr Walsh said. The Great Noosa Trail Walk prides itself on being a safe and enjoyable way for people to experience the quiet beauty of the Noosa Hinterland with volunteers and trail guides scattered along the tracks to make sure walkers didn’t lose their way. As well as guides and volunteers, the Great Noosa Trail Walk offered a shuttle service that transported walkers’ heavy luggage and camping gear to the evening’s campsite, freeing up walkers so they could really enjoy their time. The trail boasts a beautiful scenic walk with sights beyond compare, and thanks to the volunteers who worked tirelessly over the long weekend walkers of every fitness level and any profession were able to see every bit of it. Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington
Walkers setting out for the Great Noosa Trail Walk 2016. joined the walk on the first day with fellow councillors Ingrid Jackson, Jess Glassgow and Joe Jurisevic. “The Great Noosa Trail Walk is a terrific adjunct to our local events calendar, and a wonderfully inventive way to showcase the incredible offerings of our Noosa hinterland: not just the natural wonders, but our superbly friendly rural villages as well,” councillor Wellington said. “One of my favourite spots on the trail is the Cootharaba Lookout at the top of Wahpunga Range.”
“This stopping point offers a 180 degree panorama of the coast, from the Cooloola sand mass in the north, Lake Cootharaba stretching across the middle, and Noosa Heads in the south.” The planning for Great Noosa Trail Walk 2017 is already underway with many walkers eager to pre-order their tickets due to be released shortly. Wild women up for challenge selves instead of just being on hand as the “token female” – which can be the case in adventure racing mixed teams. Tri Adventure have now taken over the management of the event so Jan and Kim can take a step back from racing and put their years of experience to work so that the Wild Women Adventure Race continues to attract new women to the sport. Girls from as far as Canberra, the Gold Coast and Maryborough will be travelling to the event where they will get through a course only revealed to them an hour and a half before the start. They should expect between 20 to 30 km of mountain biking, eight to15 km trail running/trekking and three to five kilometres of kayaking and they will have six hours to complete the
course using just a map and compass. Pomona will be headquarters for the event and local businesses have been put on alert to expect more than 100 women in hot pink race bibs running and riding around their town looking for checkpoints and carrying out some other challenges in Stan Topper Park in the centre of town. The event is supported by Tourism Noosa and a range of local businesses such as butcher Alan Gitsham, who will be supplying some of his awardwinning sausages for the post-race barbecue to re-fuel the hungry racers. The race starts at 8am at on Saturday 15 October, and anyone who would like to be part of the fun can still enter at http://triadventure.com. au/?page_id=72.

Over 150 “wild women” will be in Noosa this weekend.
MORE than 100 “wild women” will be in Noosa this weekend to trek, paddle, mountain bike and navigate their way around the Hinterland. The intrepid women are taking part in the Wild Women Adventure Race which was the first of its kind, and now the largest gathering of Adventure Racing women in Australia and it all kicks off on Saturday 15 October. The event was conceived back in 2012 by Jan Leverton and Kim Beckinsale, from Noosa-based coaching business Tri Adventure, who wanted to provide women with an opportunity to participate in an adventure race in an all-female environment. This meant planning their course, doing the navigation, carrying the packs and driving the event them-

The Originals and the best By Hollie Harris SUMMER is fast approaching and things are hotting up fast on the Sunshine Coast as the Originals Music Festival prepares to charge into Coolum this November. They have fantastic high quality sound and lighting to give both performers and the audience a whole concert experience and the next Sound Feast is set to go off on Friday night 14 October. The open mic section starts at 6pm (sign on 5.30pm) followed by the live bands until 11pm. The incredible standard of the open mic performers at Sound Feast constantly amazes the crowd. Event organiser Jay Bishoff ran Peregian Originals for more than a decade.
“My vision for Sound Feast is kind of like an indoor, evening concert version of Peregian Originals. “Come enjoy these terrific acts live, at Noosa’s premier concert venue, free! And we got red bean bag couches in front of the stage, too,” he said. Australian and international solo performer Hailey Calvert shines among the line-up on Friday night. Hailey recently found new fans after performing at Woodford Folk Festival, Red Deer Festival and Bendigo Blues and Roots Festival, as well as playing to packed rooms in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.
In 2013, she received a Queensland Music Awards nomination for her song ‘Take Me Home’. “Hailey had the whole room in a trance with her intricate guitar picking floating underneath her strong, Natalie Merchant-rich vocals. “This cleverly crafted song was a great opener, showcasing her strengths as a confident and intense musician,” said Matt Schrader, from the Australian Musicians Network. Loving those lovely layers SPRING is here so it’s time to invite some friends over and treat them to some delicious home-cooked meals thanks to the legen-dairy team at The Dairy Kitchen, who have shared some of their most popular springtime recipes. Chicken, Kale and Ricotta Lasagne Preparation time: 30 minutes Cooking time: 1 hour Ingredients:
· 1 red onion, diced · 1 carrot, diced · 2 sticks celery, diced · 2 cloves garlic, crushed · 500g chicken mince · 200g mushrooms, sliced · Three-quarters of a cup chicken stock Kale and Ricotta Layer
· 1 bunch kale, finely sliced · 500g tub ricotta · Zest of a lemon
Bechamel Sauce
· 50g butter · One-quarter of a cup plain flour · 2.5 cups milk · 8 (375g) fresh lasagne sheets · 1 cup grated mozzarella Method 1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius (160 degrees Celsius fan forced). Heat a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add onion, carrot, celery and garlic and cook for about five minutes or until softened. Add chicken and cook, stirring, to break up into pieces until cooked. Add mushrooms and cook until softened. Add stock and season to taste. Remove from heat and set aside. 2. Meanwhile, blanch chopped kale in boiling water for one minute, refresh in cold water and drain well. Mix together with ricotta, lemon zest and season to taste. 3. To make bechamel sauce, melt butter in a small saucepan, add flour and cook, stirring, for 30 seconds to a minute or until flour has
cooked slightly. Remove pan from heat. Gradually whisk in the milk, whisking continuously to prevent lumps. Return pan to heat and stir for five minutes or until sauce boils and thickens. Remove from heat and season to taste. Set aside. 4. In a 35cm x 21cm deep baking dish, layer alternating sheets of lasagne with chicken mince, kale and ricotta mixture, finishing with a top layer of pasta. Spread bechamel over to cover and sprinkle with mozzarella. Bake for 40-45
minutes or until golden brown and cooked through. Handy Tip Try using spreadable ricotta from a tub for this recipe, as it is creamier and softer in consistency, which is ideal for this lasagne. If using a wedge of ricotta, mash with a fork and mix with a little milk to form a soft spreadable consistency.
One sweet sting thing Magic Beesting Custard Cake Preparation Time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 1.25 hours Ingredients: 4 eggs, separated 1.25 cups caster sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 tablespoon water 125g butter, melted Three-quarters of a cup plain flour 2 cups (500 ml) full cream milk, lukewarm
· · · · · · ·
Honey Syrup
· 1/3 cup sugar · 1/3 cup water · 2 tablespoons honey · Half a cup flaked almonds, toasted Method: 1. Preheat an oven to 160 degrees Celsius (140 degrees Celsius fan forced). Line the base and sides of a 20cm round cake pan. 2. In a clean mixing bowl, beat egg whites with an electric mixer until firm peaks form. Set aside. 3. In a separate bowl, beat the egg yolks, sugar, vanilla and water with an electric mix-
er over high speed for five minutes or until mixture is light and fluffy. Gradually add in the butter until mixed through. Reduce mixer speed to low, add flour and mix in until just combined. Gradually beat in the lukewarm milk until incorporated. Gently fold in beaten egg whites with a large metal spoon. 4. Pour mixture into pan and bake for 1 hour and 10 minutes or until the top is golden, and the centre is slightly wobbly. Cool in the pan until completely cold. 5. Combine sugar, water and honey in a small saucepan. Stir over medium heat until sugar has dissolved. Bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes or until thickened into a syrup. Allow to cool to room temperature. 6. Sprinkle almonds over cake and drizzle with syrup, then serve. Handy Tip The easiest way to toast nuts is to place them in the oven after the cake has finished cooking. Increase oven temperature to 180 degrees Celsius and cook for five minutes or until golden brown. When adding beaten egg whites to batter, begin by stirring one spoonful of the beaten egg white into the mix. It will lighten the batter and make it more accepting of the remaining egg white when you gently fold it in.

JOIN highly acclaimed international author Nancy Singleton Hachisu and Mami Kitani, the president of Yamaki Jozo, for a sevencourse degustation and an intimate 10-ticket only masterclass on the Noosa leg of their Australian tour. Nancy Singelton Hachisu intended on spending one year abroad in search of good food. During that year she met Tadaaki, an organic farmer, and they fell in love – 27 years and three sons later she’s still there, living in their Japanese farmhouse in rural Saitama, absorbing traditional Japanese farm culture and leading a movement of farm-to-table Japanese cooking. Her two highly acclaimed books, Japanese Farm Food and Preserving the Japanese Way, document her personal stories and explore the essence of Japanese country cooking. Mami Kitani is the young president of Yamaki Jozo, an organic miso, soy and pickle company located in Saitama Japan. Since 1902 the company has been producing traditional Japanese food using carefully selected organic ingredients from local farms. In October, Mami joins with Fino Foods to launch some of her premium products into the Australian market. Japanophiles will have the opportunity to experience Yamaki Jozo’s shoya, umeboshi paste, shiso and dashi powders and mirin. Together Nancy and Mami are hosting a dinner at Wasabi on Saturday October 15. The seven-course degustation with a cocktail on arrival is $155 per guest and tickets are limited. Then, the following day, 10 lucky ticket holders will get the pleasure of learning first
hand from Nancy when she further demonstrates and explains the techniques associated with Japanese preserving in an intimate masterclass at The Cooking School Noosa. She will be presenting delicious dishes inspired by her books and creating a three-course meal for the 10 guests. Masterclass tickets are $270 and include a signed copy of her latest book, Preserving the Japanese Way. This oneoff masterclass is an Australian first. To book tickets to either event, guests can call the restaurant on 5449 2443 or email wasabi.events@hotmail.com

UPCOMING EVENTS
CHRISTMAS has a habit of rolling around much sooner than imagined bringing with it a procession of end-of-year parties. Don’t get caught out. Noosa Today’s special Christmas Party feature is a gentle reminder to get booking if you want to make sure this year’s Christmas Party is the best yet. Here are our top tips for planning a Christmas Party to remember so you can be the hero of the office. Consider your needs There’s no point booking an entire venue for a party of 15 and you can’t comfortably cram 40 people into a small restaurant. Consider the guest list and make sure the venue will comfortably suit the number of those attending. Also think about what type of event would suit the guests. A stand-up cocktail party with lots of mingling and canapes could suit the socialable group, while a classy sit down dinner at a high-end restaurant might be the perfect way to thank a small team of staff for their hard work throughout the year. The Noosa Shire has a range of different venues available for Christmas Parties - from cosy restaurants to large convention centres. Book early Waiting until the last minute will only lead to disappointment. If you haven’t started looking for a party venue, now is the time to find a
space to suit your needs and get booking. Most high-class, top-quality venues will already have limited availability so get in now to make sure you can nab the space. Booking early will also help colleagues organise themselves in regards to sitters or designated drivers and give them something exciting to look forward to as the stressful end of the year whizzes closer. Set a budget It’s likely those who hold the purse strings will set the budget, but make sure it’s realistic and decide whether party-goers are in for a no-cost treat or is there going to be a small price for everyone to pay? Will drinks be on the house or will the bar be cash-only? It’s important to make these decisions now and let partygoers know in advance so there are no surprises on the night. Get creative Consider adding things to the event that will make it unique. Maybe there are some fun games everyone can play. Or maybe small trophies for humorous awards can be given out on the night. Adding a touch of personality to the night can take it from a drab get together to something a whole lot more fun. A themed dress-up party can be fun or maybe try Secret Santa with each person buying a present for their nominated giftee. Setting a small budget for the presents can turn up some fun and interesting gifts.

Let the team at Peppers Resort and Villas Noosa create a magical Christmas lunch for your family.
WHY not give your staff a Christmas celebration to remember this year by combining a morning on the golf course with a delicious twocourse festive lunch? If golf’s not the thing, maybe a one-hour session of being pampered in a world-class spa will show your staff how much they’re valued.

These are some of the creative Christmas party options available this year at Noosa Springs Golf and Spa Resort, where quality and value go hand in hand. It’s available
only on weekdays. Should you prefer to pass on the golf or the Spa Thermal Suite treatment, the two-course lunch or dinner, complete with Christmas theming, is available for just $43 a person ($58 for the three-course option). For the more traditional staff gathering, Noosa Springs can provide a two-hour cocktail Christmas party, including

KEEP YOUR BODY
Poor dental health can lead to periodontal disease, a bacterial infection affecting the gums that often causes tooth loss. Over the last few years, numerous clinical studies have linked periodontal disease with other serious health conditions. Its presence can increase your risk of suffering from chronic health conditions, or may worsen any diseases already present, for example diabetes. Unfortunately, the early signs of periodontal disease are often overlooked. The good news is that with proper regular dental care, periodontal disease is preventable. Looking after your mouth will help protect your smile and your general health.

Good for heart and the mind By Hollie Harris
Nutritionist Most people consider losing weight the number one reason for eating healthier. But should it be our top priority? Research typically shows that in most cases, healthy weight follows healthy choices, but those healthy choices have benefits that far exceed simple weight loss. For example, proper eating habits can lead to a decreased risk of some cancers, heart disease, chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes. If you’re looking to make sure your body not only has a healthy appearance, but is healthy from the inside out, book with Freda Dunn today to see the changes you can make for a better you. Freda has been an accredited practitioner for 24 years is a member of ANTA in Diet & Nutrition, Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine and Naturopathy.

“Mental Health Week is particularly important as the more we get our community members talking about mental health, the more likely that a family member, young person, a friend or associate will speak out and get help. “Good mental health provides a sense of wellbeing, confidence and self-esteem. “It allows us to fully enjoy and appreciate other people, day-to-day life and our environment. “When we are mentally healthy we can form positive relationships, use our abilities to reach our potential and deal with life’s challenges. “I encourage people experiencing, or at risk of mental ill-health, to get involved during Mental Health Week by attending one of the many local events - with everything from

IN the middle of Queensland Mental Health Week, the Sunshine Coast kicks off a range of events happening across the Coast this week. Mayor Mark Jamieson said the Sunshine Coast Social Strategy highlighted the importance of ensuring people were safe, healthy, feeling valued, embraced and connected, with the council fostering opportunities for people to contribute to the strength of the community. “Queensland Mental Health Week is an opportunity for the Sunshine Coast community to acknowledge and reflect upon mental health, take action to promote overall mental health and wellbeing and reduce the stigma associated with mental ill-health, Cr Jamieson said. “The aim of Mental Health Week is to promote social and emotional wellbeing to the community, encouraging people to maximise their health potential and enhance the coping capacity of communities, families, individuals while supporting mental health recovery. “The theme for Mental Health Week this year, is to ‘value mental health’ - that of our own, our loved ones, friends and colleagues - at home, work and at play.

Code of silence BOB Jarvis posed questions in his letter last week (6 October) about Noosa Council openness, transparency, and communication to its ratepayers about plans, policies, and expenditures - well, there is little or no news of any of these. The council’s “closed door policy" may be because of the resounding silence of council meetings, or so no-one outside is disturbed by the snoring. It is not only Biosphere benefits we aren’t hearing about, it is also things which the council should be pursuing with other government bodies for the shire’s betterment like the Myall Street-railway bridge intersection, the disgusting weed infestation of Lake MacDonald, and the Katie Rose Hospice preservation to name a few. Is the council firing any rockets in the right directions to have these problems addressed? And if they are, why are not we, the ratepayers, hearing anything about any positive action in the offing? Big salaries are being paid for seemingly little return. Mark and Jan Rose, Cooroy.
Park sanctuary would clash with Branson’s scheme for Makepeace Island, even though there is no reason why we could not have two venues. We explained to council how it could be done, at minimal cost, to absolutely no avail. Now in the past three weeks two koalas have been seen, one near the hospital, and the other near the pathway. There has also been one sighted in Tewantin school. So Noosa Council, get cracking, and do something to make this area a koala sanctuary. Kay Fielden, Tewantin.
Koala focus I HAVE not written to the papers for some time due to being ill, but in my absence between the pages I note that there is now a lot of mention re the koala, our national icon, which is almost shamefully extinct. Some months ago I wrote to Noosa Council suggesting that Wallace Park be converted to a koala sanctuary, because there was now room for them given the reduction in bat numbers. Bats are protected, but are not national icons so koalas would have the priority, or so one would think. Noosa Council came up with all sorts of excuses as to why that would not be a good idea. Upon reflection it would seem that a Wallace

Skin crawls
WE MOVED up to Peregian Beach a year ago and I would like your readers to know how kind we’ve found the people here to be. As a 71-year-old who should be old enough to know better she can’t ride a bicycle very well any longer, I took a bad fall today on the hill near the Peregian shopping village. By the time I realised what had happened there were three people standing over me inquiring as to my condition. One lady (Nicky) who works at the Coolum Surf Club even ran out to the road to stop the traffic, pulled out a first aid kid from her SUV, patched me up then insisted on driving me and and my bike home. She even gave me a couple of discount coupons for the club. I’d like to formally thank all three of you, the man and two woman who came to my aid and assure them that there is no permanent damage. Trish Evans, Peregian Beach.
IS ANYBODY else’s skin crawling due to our Federal Environment Minister? To comprehend the level of inanity displayed in his statement of primarily protecting humans before others in his role as Environment Minister, well these darkest depths we cannot fathom. The Judeo-Christian zeitgeist pure fallacy of humans being the proverbial Earth that has the Sun going around it is perhaps the most disagreeable notion, the most counter-intuitive notion a human could possibly ever come up with. When will our leaders put a cost on the complexities of the biosphere? There is a cost on everything else that has intrinsic value to life, why not that (excuse me apparently not concerning the oxygen and mix of the air we breathe, certainly no cost on that!)? Does anybody who claims to be a member of the most important species on Earth really and truly believe, that the other organisms on this planet are not as worthy as them? Worthy in all the ways a human is worthy? A shark is not a fish, no sir a shark is a shark, please let’s understand the meaning of the things that come out of our mouths. Humans and their brains are indeed special, very special. Perhaps reinforcing this delicate no-

IT IS “fossil fuels“ that gave rise to the industrial revolution and that have continued to improve our standard of living. Until something comes along that can fairly (without taxpayer subsidies) compete with coal, gas and oil, there is no reason why we shouldn’t continue to use those concentrated forms of stored energy. Particularly Victoria with some thousands of years of brown coal reserves, shouldn’t even think about wind, solar, etc. These “clean energy“ sources (apart from being an exercise in total futility for reducing “global warming“) are all so much more expensive than coal, that reliance on them will continue to drive industries out of this country. An aluminium smelter for instance, could never operate on wind/solar electricity supply; yet such industries were enticed to come to Australia with the promise of cheap electricity - we’re now sending them and the thousands of jobs, away. Case Smit, Noosaville.

Koala concern LIZ Davison (Noosa Today, 6 October) claims that Noosa Council had choices with regards to koala offsets resulting from the Bruce Highway Cooroy to Curra upgrade. Unfortunately this is not the case. DTMR were determined to plant trees in their own road corridor. I made direct entreaties to DTMR to allow for offsets to be planted on identified land in Noosa Shire. These recommendations were met with point blank refusal. As for what else Noosa Council is doing for koalas, we have endorsed a Koala Strategy and a Koala Management Plan which council is now implementing. We have supported USC scientists in mapping our local koalas using Maya the tracking dog. We are continuing to develop koala mapping that will inform our new planning scheme. Through the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation, council is helping fund a threeyear research project studying the health of our local koalas. Furthermore, we support the additional Branson Koala Conservancy and are actively working with their scientists for the benefit of local koala populations. Tony Wellington, Noosa Mayor.

IT SURPRISES me that blame for the mess at the old Noosa Bowls Club has been put entirely on backpackers. This is not the type of behaviour perpetrated by backpackers who are mostly decent people who do not have a lot of money but a desire to see the world. To me it looks more like the work of teenage vandals on a rampage. Unfortunately backpackers, as they do, have found a free parking spot and the mess must be theirs, sad. People seem to be very put out by anyone getting a free night and the backpackers are always the target. Noosa encourages visitors but wants to choose who is most desirable. Backpackers add to the young, happy feel of Noosa and should be encouraged to cheer the place up. They spend their money, too - it may not be in top diners but they do eat. I wonder who investigated the noise and if it was so bad why not call the police? It all sounds picky to me. I also noted that the tops were neatly on the bottles which were “strewn around.” Mae Elliott, Noosaville.
Get low I’M used to climate deniers sinking to murky depths in their twisting of the facts, but Woody Dass’s deplorable attack on Steve Hall (22 September) takes the cake. Mr Dass asserts that Steve “preaches” to his students and asks us to “imagine the distain (sic) Mr Hall would unleash if one of his students dared to raise questions”. Such attempts at character assassination do not deserve a place in a newspaper. The sad thing is that Mr Dass has completely fabricated scenarios to discredit Steve. He could easily seek out some of the thousands of students on the Sunshine Coast who have been inspired by Steve’s teaching over the years. They would tell him that nothing could be further from the truth. I’ve seen Steve teach. Noone respects his students more or stimulates their inquiry skills better. There is no way he would ever treat a student with disdain. If I were Steve, I’d be asking for an apology. It’s one thing to disagree forcefully with an opinion and quite another to contrive a damaging fictional picture of the person who proposes it. I know climate deniers are desperate for ammunition, but low acts of invective like this are not acceptable. Graham Coghill, Marcus Beach.
The cost IN THE fifth richest country in the world, Captain Minuson of The Budget, could close Australia’s secret offshore storage facilities which hoard humans. Releasing the $9.6 billion to rescue the debt and deficit, no surplus, budget emergency disaster would mean billions saved in dollar costs; incalculable savings in human cost. Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach.
The real effects KEN Lynn’s reference to the teaching of climate change at university (Noosa Today, 29 September) does not validate a supposed greenhouse effect. A review of the content of these courses shows that the teaching of the greenhouse effect is based on models similar to the one used at Harvard University (Chapter 7 “The Greenhouse Effect”). To explain the observed surface temperature of the Earth the model shows that the atmosphere would have to trap 77 per cent of all of the infrared radiation emitted by the surface. However, as physicists have shown, there is a major error in the physics used to derive the energy balance equations for these greenhouse models. The error is apparent when the Harvard greenhouse model is used to explain the very high surface temperature of Venus. When this is done it is found that Venus’s atmosphere would need to trap twice as much energy as its surface is emitting, an impossible situation. Greenhouse models violate the law of conservation of energy and are not valid representations of the way energy is exchanged between the surface of a planet and the gas molecules in its atmosphere. SPORTTODAY An old postcard image of Colombo’s Grand Oriental.
Notes from the “peer of paradise”
Inset: Sunday arvo madness on the Galle Face Green.
Life of
brine PHIL JARRATT
TODAY’S column comes to you from a battered old desk in a large wood-lined and slightly musty hotel room at the Grand Oriental Hotel at Colombo Harbour, Sri Lanka. The gushing introduction to the hotel on Channel 1 of our antiquated room television promises “spectacular views over Colombo Harbour from every room at the hotel known throughout history as the peer of paradise”, but I guess at about $100 a night we fell below the price barrier for a harbour view because ours is of the external air-conditioning unit which is currently playing host to three rather worrying turds that are much larger than normal birdsize, plus the junk-filled backyard of a block of flats beyond. But that said, I love it here. Not since I found a bullet hole in the bathroom window of our similarly decrepit hotel in Havana, Cuba, have I been so excited by proximity to the glorious decay of grandeur. And, over breakfast in the Harbour Room Restaurant on the floor above us, I was able to gaze out over the panorama of a working harbour – I grew up with a distant view of the Port Kembla smoke stacks, so put my fascination down to that – while feasting on superb hoppers and curries covered with seeni sambol. From the fuzzy story on the TV, I have also learnt that Marshall Tito, Mao Tse Tung
and numerous other murderous dictators have stayed here, as well as Anton Chekhov and Indira Gandhi, to somewhat balance the ledger. Built in 1837, the Grand Oriental served as the Resident’s residence, until becoming a hotel in the latter years of the century, when it still enjoyed the most salubrious position in town, a claim since surrendered to the stately Galle Face Hotel a kilometre or so down the beach, away from the noise and the smells of the port. I remember my parents talking about stopping off in Colombo as they sailed home from their grand European adventure more than half a century ago, and my dad complaining bitterly about the smells and bustle of the “filthy docks filled with beggars and sailors”. (He was a RAAF man, through and through.) I doubt
much has changed in this part of Colombo, but just a few blocks away, alongside the clutter and craziness of the Sri Lankan capital, you can also find sedate and restful English gardens, the stern facades of Dutch churches and the most amazingly colourful Bhuddist and Hindu temples. In short, it’s a port town that still reflects its colourful cultural history, moving from one spice trade invader to the next, and even now, almost 70 years since independence, more the sum of its parts than an island nation with its own identity. I write this, mind you, from the lofty position of some 18 hours of observation of the old port town of about a million people. This is my first visit, but Sri Lanka has been on my bucket list for quite a few years, so I’ve done

my homework. I know, for example, that relative peace was restored half a dozen years ago after more than 40 years of sporadic civil war between the Tamils and Sinhalese. I know, as our tuk-tuk driver reminded us this afternoon, that they are “bloody good at cricket”. And I know that the ethnic and religious mix continues to get more complex. While Buddhists are in the majority nationally, they are a minority in Muslim-dominated Colombo. The potential for future trouble is obvious, but the people seem so damn happy that it’s easy to get caught up in their smiley indifference to the world beyond the present. This afternoon we wandered the Galle Face Green, a crazy promenade adjacent to a choppy sea, and ate delicious street food from vendors pushing dilapidated carts before settling at the bar of the Galle Face Hotel to watch the sunset and sip on a predictably colonial gin and tonic. It was mostly locals and Brits at the garden bar, and no one even blinked when a piper led a uniformed bellboy down to the edge of the croquet lawn to lower the flag as the sun dipped below the horizon. I’ve been in plenty of places where the last gasp of colonialism is being played out, from George Town, Penang to Old Honolulu, but this was a particularly odd little ritual – kind of nice in its trite way – because on the other side of a wall that most of them never cross, the real Sri Lankans were singing and dancing along the beach strip, celebrating their own very different future. We leave early on the train for Galle. More from Sri Lanka next week.

Island kids learn surf skills Between the
flags RON LANE
ON Monday a team of 13 children from the small island of Yorke, 80 kilometres south/west of New Guinea, arrived at the Noosa Surf Life Saving Club for a Surf Education Training Program, followed by a welcome barbecue. Under the supervision of Education Manager, Greg McLaughlin, and his training team, they were introduced to the basic fundamentals of life saving. For these children the trip down to Australia was their first trip away from their island homes. All children are Grades 5 and 6 pupils of the Tagai State College, and for this trip they are under the care of husband and wife team of Dan and Sarah Tonon. Dan is the Principal of the Tagai College and Sarah is a member of the teaching staff. For the Noosa club, the arrival of the group bought a pleasant surprise, for Sarah was a member of the Noosa Surf Club staff for six years, and as such worked under present manager Anton Mogg. “Sarah was a highly regarded staff member,” said Anton, “and while working with us she was working her way through Uni. It is really great to see how things have worked out for Sarah. In those days she was Sarah Finnemore.
All the way from the small island of Yorke, 13 children took on a Surf Education Training Program at Noosa on Monday. “This group has a bit of background,” said Dan. “The last trip for our students was back in 1988, and now some of those students are the parents of pupils here today; and with Sarah’s background in the Supporter Club it gives everything a personal touch. Describing the children Dan said, “With the children coming from an island environment, they are salt water children so they fit in nicely. At home they dive for turtles and all kinds of fish life. “The ocean is their home and this
gives them a look at another side of things. Up in the Torres Strait Islands we have what we call The Campus. There are 17 of these and they are spread throughout the 47,000 square kilometres of ocean. This covers an area from the tip of Queensland to the border of Papua New Guinea. “When they finish at Tagai, where students start pre-prep age and go through to Grade 6, they either go to Thursday Island or the Australian mainland to further their education. At present we have 56 students enrolled at Tagai College.’’

This one week educational trip comes at a cost of $36,000 and much fund-raising was required, so all community groups on the islands worked in together. This plus Government Gaming Grants made the trip possible. The training and courtesy is just another example of the success of the school programs conducted by Noosa and totally supported by the schools. This program has been operating for several years and it involves schools from Cooran to Yandina; and other invitees, such as our Tagai students.
“We have a very good team of experienced coaches and trainers on call at all times,” said Greg. “This ensures that all students are in the very best of care. We could not ask for more.” The smiles on the faces of the little visitors said it all. This Educational program plus the Seahorse Nippers would have to be two of the great success stories in the 86-year history of the Noosa Club. Sunday morning some 53 members of the Noosa Heads Club attended a club council meeting at the Peregian clubhouse. The agenda drawn up centered on the future of the premises and the steps needed to ensure a positive outcome for all aspects of the project. With regard to patrols on Peregian Beach, all in attendance were in total agreeance that patrols will continue to be conducted and fully supported. The present work agreement between the lifeguards and lifesavers has been very successful and on-going and a high standard of patrolling is being maintained; and this will be continued. The people in the community of Peregian can rest assured that their beach safety is in good hands. It was good to see the hundreds of little Nippers back on the beach for the start of yet another season. All the team at Noosa Today wish our Nippers a happy and safe summer.

The Sunshine Beach Nippers are ready to learn all about what it takes to save lives. Picture: SURF SHOTS
Nippers swarm the beach By Dave Gleeson MORE than 180 Nippers took to the water last weekend to mark the start of the 2016/17 Sunshine Beach Nipper season. The Nippers hit the beach in their new sun-safe rash shirts sponsored by Bonds and Boost Juice Noosa, age group coloured caps and club
togs; it was a great spectacle. Our youngest Nippers, the Under 7s in their pink caps, were all keen to start their Nippers' experience and were loving the water games and sand fun they had with parents and new age managers helping out. From Under 7s to Under 13s, the action was non-stop with dedicated sprint track, beach flags arenas, sand
games, swim and board course all getting a good workout. For increased safety the younger Nippers connected most of their water play between the flags under the supervision of the lifesaving patrol and also age manager and water safety. Our senior Nippers, the Under 14s, who have all recently gained their Surf Rescue Certificates,
showed their great leadership skills by helping out as water safety and ensuring all younger members were safe and comfortable in the water, to ensure they enjoyed their first day of Sunshine Beach Nippers. And, not to be forgotten, the postNippers barbecue was also extremely popular after a great day on the beach with hungry Nippers and parents
Blizzard boxes up a storm By Ron Lane YOUNG Tasmanian amateur boxer Tyler Blizzard had had enough, he was going to quit. It was early 2016, and he felt he was going nowhere. Then the unexpected happened, a phone call from Queensland. It was Cooroy boxing coach Mark Evans with a message – and the message was loud and clear. “Don’t do it young fellow, you have too much talent. Pack your bags and come up here.” Heeding the advice, the young fighter moved into the Shire of Noosa and immediately settled in as a member of the Impact Boxing Academy in Cooroy. He immediately started training under his “phone caller,” coach Mark Evans, and as they say – the rest is now history. Educated at St Patricks College in Launceston, Tasmania, the young fighter has now had a total 36 fights and since arriving on the coast has never lost a bout. If present achievements are any indication, his future looks very promising. His record shows four Australian Titles and two Golden Gloves. Last month, while touring Ireland as a member of the Queensland Amateur Boxing Team, he fought in both the Munster and Celtic Cup tournaments and came home undefeated. Tyler’s wins in the Celtic Cup Tournament resulted in his being awarded the coveted Celtic Cup Championship Belt. “After the award it was all surreal,” said Tyler, “There were TV and media all over the place; and the belt – well it was something else. When I first saw it on display I never imagined myself ever getting it, but I did – it was unbelievable.” However, success in the fight game does not come easy. After making up noosatoday.com.au
Tasmanian amateur boxer Tyler Blizzard has packed his bags for Cooroy. his mind to make it his thing in life, he had discussions with his coach and as a result Mark invited him to move into the family home; and also offered him work for a few days a week in the paint contracting business. “His day starts at 5am,” said Mark. “Roadwork and then into the gym. Then after work it’s back for more gym work. Our goal for the young man is the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and if he is still on track it’s the big one, the Tokyo Olympics.’’ But for now there is a quick trip to Tasmania. The reason for this, is that he will be the major fight on the under card against Bradley Collins of NSW, for the Daniel Geale professional World Title fight. This came about
when his old coach Craig Woods rang with the offer. Tyler’s handlers quickly accepted and the date is set for 13 October. We wish this young amateur and his coach all the best. At the Israel Kani Noosa Box Office Gym in Noosaville, Bennie Slavin has chalked up a great win. Flying out to Moranbah on short notice, Slavin won a unanimous points decision when he outpointed his opponent Tysinn Vest. “Fighting the main event in the Elite division it was a very good result,’’ said coach Israel. “Our next tournament will be at the Dag Pub in Caboolture 22 October, and for that we will have a team of seven.’’
fuelling up on a Sunday morning. Sunshine Beach Nippers will still be accepting new members until the start of December, so if your kids want to get involved please call club administrator Terri on 5447 5491 or lifesaving@sunshinebeachslsc.com. au, or simply come along on Sunday mornings to see what it is all about.
Big flathead in the river By Jack Mangrove THE Noosa River has again been the saviour of most anglers. With the wind up, the river offers some great protection from the elements. The whiting have been outstanding over the last couple of weeks with some real elbow slappers coming from the river. Areas like the Frying Pan the Dog Beach and Gympie Terrace have all produced some cracker fish. We are also seeing some good schools of bigeye trevally around the turn of the tides – the low light periods have been the best and with the morning and evening tides at the moment perfect for targeting these fish. Giant trevally have also been in the mix along with big tailor. The sinking Jackson range of lures is perfect for these fish when they’re not quite feeding on the surface. There’s a fair bit of movement up river with mangrove jacks coming from the structure that lines the area of river between the lakes. These areas are perfect for throwing suspending and diving lures close to the structure. We are also seeing good flathead from the lower stretches of the river – for the bait anglers, drifting small frogmouth pilchards has been working well, and for the lure anglers slow hopping a soft plastic has been also doing the job. On the beach, the tailor have definitely started to make their way back from Fraser Island. Good quality tailor have been taken from most gutters along North Shore – the feeding fish are lean and hungry after spawning up at Fraser. Whiting, dart and flatties have also been inhabiting the same gutters. Good quality pilchards are the favoured bait, with both mullet and bonito fillets claiming some nice fish. On the freshwater scene, bass have been active on the edges of Lake McDonald on weedless soft plastics like the 3” Chasebaits from River2sea. As well as fishing the edges, bass have been active in the open water, therefore fishing vibes like the 65mm Fish Candy Paddle Vibes will get you success.
Dee Lawrence with a flathead. As the afternoons cool off the bass have been taking a liking to small surface poppers fished along the weed edges. For the offshore crew, the wind has played havoc with a lot of offshore plans so most anglers are heading out before sun up and fishing the closer reefs and making the run home before the winds get to strong. Reefs like Sunshine Reef, Halls and Jew Sholes were the targets with some nice sweetlip, and smaller snapper. Sunshine reef also gave up the odd coral trout. Some of the bigger charters did head to the outer reef with some great results including snapper, pearlies, moses perch, Maoris, tuskies and gold spot wrasse. The first Gone Fishing Day is this Sunday 16 October. This is a day when all Australians can get out on the water for a fish and celebrate our love of fishing. It doesn’t matter if you have never fished before, Gone Fishing Day is for everyone. So why not sign up for the biggest fishing event on the Australian fishing calendar. Jump on line and check it out and register at https://gonefishingday.org On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures.
