Street fight over mental home bid By Luke Voogt

Allan Fels

A proposal to house mentally ill people in a residential Thomson street has outraged parents. Haven Foundation’s proposal for 46 Lomond Terrace has received 42 objections. The 16-bed facility is near St Margaret’s and Tate Street primary schools, a child care centre and a liquor store.

Lomond Terrace resident Max Ryan thought residents had defeated the proposal when 50 people attended a meeting with the foundation’s chief and Geelong priest Father Kevin Dillon in 2014. “The residents weren’t copping it,” he said. “It was just a shemozzle, really, and I thought that would be the last of it. Everyone said go and build it in your own street.” Continued page 3

“It’s simply in the wrong location,” said Anna Craig, who lives on Lomond Terrace with her husband and 11-month-old daughter. “I want to feel comfortable that my kids will be safe walking up the road to the shops.” Ms Craig said she was “completely supportive of providing facilities to the mentally ill”. “I think it’s fantastic. It just shouldn’t be in a family area.”

‘Hit-run’ stamps number plate on chasing vehicle By Luke Voogt A driver fleeing a Corio crash imprinted his rego on a car chasing him when he backed into it to escape, his victim has alleged. “I knew I shouldn’t have chased him but I wanted to get his number plate,” the furious driver told the Indy on Thursday. The driver, who declined to be identified until police finished investigating, said he began chasing the 2001 Ford ute when it collided with his Hyundai on Station Street on Wednesday night, 12 October. He followed the ute along Georges Road and Iris Street but lost sight of it before pulling up behind the Ford at the intersection of

Carmellia Crescent. The ute reversed into the driver’s Hyundai before he could react then fled again, he said. “It happened so quick I didn’t even know what happened. “As he hit me he’s gone over the gutter and a give-way sign as well.” The collision was violent enough to imprint the ute’s number plate on the Hyundai’s bonnet. Bell Post Hill’s Nick Cross, who recently made headlines for his crime-reporting Facebook page, said one of his friends living nearby dialled triple zero after the second crash. “The impact was that strong that it bent his steering wheel and his hand has gone through his dash,” Mr Cross said.

The CFA arrived soon after the crash, treating cuts to the driver’s hand. The driver waited almost two hours for police until attending Corio’s station instead, Mr Cross said. Sergeant Tony French warned citizens against pursuing offenders. The Hyundai driver’s decision to tail the alleged offender turned an initially “minor accident” into a write-off, Sgt French said. “We’d recommend pulling over and ringing triple zero rather than following someone, which could end up in a dangerous situation.” Sgt French urged anyone with information on the incident to phone Corio Police Station on 5273 9555 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

In Brief Unhealthy finances The State Government will shore up Geelong’s biggest employer after Barwon Health posted a $13 million deficit following three years of surpluses. Health Minister Jill Hennesy appointed a delegate to the board and announced a review after the service, which employs almost 6700 staff, posted the worst annual financial result of all Victorian public health services.

Fish hope Fish could return to a pair of local lakes popular with anglers before drying up during the millennium drought. Fisheries Victoria revealed that lakes Murdeduke and Modewarre, both west of Geelong, were on a “watch list” for restocking as water levels continued to climb after recent heavy rains.

Camera’s revenge A man who allegedly stole cameras from Geelong’s Myer store has police on his tail after unwittingly walking past one of their counterparts. Police posted a security camera image of the man, (pictured) on social media as he walked through the store about 11.40am on Monday.

Kiosk restored Workers have restored an historic Ladies Kiosk in Geelong Botanic Gardens to “original condition”, City Hall has announced. The City said council staff worked with teams from Heritage Victoria and Friends of the Botanic Gardens to upgrade the kiosk, relocated from Market Square in 1912.

Residents oppose bid to house mentally ill at Thomson From page 1 Haven Foundation chairman Allan Fels said he would happily welcome similar accommodation in his own street. The former chairman of Australia Competition and Consumer Commission said he had a daughter in the foundation’s South Yarra facility. “I wouldn’t dream of putting my daughter somewhere unsafe.” Mr Fels said he often visited the South Yarra

facility, which was also near a bottleshop. “In five years I’ve never seen anyone drunk there. The haven in South Yarra is near a lot of community facilities and there have never been any problems.” Mr Fels said the Thomson facility would accommodate residents without histories of violence, drugs or alcohol abuse. The building would be safer than residential flats, “which anyone could occupy,” he said.

“They’re carefully selected by mental health professionals - it’s not called Haven for nothing.” Mr Fels said specialist nurses would monitor the accommodation at all times, ensuring safety for patients and nearby residents. Moving mentally ill people to “a remote area with no services” was not the answer, and some residents supported the plan, he said.

One of Geelong’s biggest proposed redevelopments has lost its bid for $9 million in the latest round of federal grants for regional projects. Royal Geelong Yacht Club said it was now working on a “renewed application” for a federal commitment to the $19 million safe harbour project after Canberra failed to approve any local National Stronger Regions Fund applications.

Women gather About 200 delegates will attend a national conference of businesswomen in Geelong this weekend, according to organisers. The BPW Australia National Conference would begin with a “cocktail function” tonight (Friday) then discuss workplace equity issues before winding up at a “gala dinner” on Saturday night, the organisers said.

First it was popular music. Then came the fashions. And now it’s clowns. Yes, American culture has extended the oversized novelty glove of its latest cultural trend deep into Australia, with the Geelong region feeling its touch this week. But were local reports of creepy clown sightings overblown? Clown-induced school lockdowns seemed limited to Colac, with no substantiated reports in Geelong. Geelong police’s Facebook page posted a warning against clown-related activity but lacked any suspects. And a perusal of local social media accounts established to deal with the threat indicated limited, if any, para-circus activity. So why the hysteria without the size-28 shoes? Why hasn’t anyone sent in the clowns? Could it have something to do with the creepy Gheringhap Street building abutting Johnstone Park? The one formerly known as …. Clown Hall? The one exorcised in April? Now that’s creepy. Speaking of clowns, families might be best advised to avoid the Royal Geelong Show this weekend. After all, rodeo clowns have been known to stalk the showground, while the odd roaming performer in stripy pants and curly red afro has lurked among crowds over the years. And let’s not forget the traditional terror of sideshow alley, where patrons reliably encounter the shady characters pictured above. Double Take suggests a walk on the beach in-

stead - much cheaper and nary any clown-life to be seen. Finally, and possibly still clown-related, AFL umpires have earned a tick of approval from latest research out of Deakin University. The uni claimed this week that umpies usually made the right decision, “contrary to the views of many one-eyed AFL fans”. Honours student Sean Corrigan investigated 6839 decisions, giving them a generally thumbs up for overcoming influences such as umpire experience, home-ground advantage and crowd composition. In fact, 92 per cent of awarded free kicks were justified, Corrigan reported. In light of these findings, fans should prepare to applaud 92 per cent of decisions next season. As if…

Ferry ‘returns for tourist season’ maintenance would take between three to four weeks. “That depends on what they find. They’re doing it at this time so the peak tourism time won’t be impacted.” Mr Rae said the ferry had significant support among Bellarine Peninsula residents. “I’m getting lots of phone calls from people panicking and thinking it won’t go back in the water.” The service had “grown and grown” during the trial, Mr Rae said. He expected its patronage to increase greatly

By Luke Voogt Portarlington’s ferry is likely to return in November for the tourist season, according to a local campaigner. Port Phillip Ferries released a statement this week saying the service’s trial period would end on Friday so the company could conduct maintenance on the ferry. The company would make further announcements on the return of the service during the maintenance period, it said. But Bellarine Ferry Group’s John Rae said the

during summer. Bellarine Ferry Group would conduct a letter drop supporting the service in the coming months, Mr Rae said. “We’d planned to do a bulk letter drop a month ago. That got pulled because we knew there was a major service coming up.” Negotiations between Port Phillip Ferries and maritime authorities would help make the ferry “even more attractive” as a commuter service, Mr Rae said. The company was holding discussions with authorities to increase the ferry’s speed during

its last leg, cutting 15 minutes from the trip, he revealed. “It’s always better if you can do it quicker,” he said. The 88-minute ferry was already competitive with rail for Bellarine residents, who had to drive at least 20 minutes for the one-hour Melbourne train from Geelong, Mr Rae said. “When you add all that up I think (the train) is close to the same time or longer.” The ferry was vital option for the “publictransport-poor” peninsula, Mr Rae said.

New foundation to launch Jack on the trip of lifetime GOR repairs plea A new charity plans to send Clifton Springs’ Jack Copperwaite on a life-changing holiday with official launch proceeds. Jack’s rare genetic condition, Crouzon’s syndrome, causes breathing and developmental issues. He has undergone 15 major surgeries to deal with his particularly rare form of the syndrome. Builder Heath Tournier established his foundation to help disadvantaged youth find work and accommodation but expanded its scope after reading about Jack. “I knew I could help because I’ve got a trade background. I just want to get involved and help families like Jack’s.” The Tournier Foundation recently completed a $120,000 renovation to make the Copperwaite family’s home safer for Jack. Mr Tournier said he would send the family on a Gold Coast theme park holiday with proceeds from the launch night. Tickets for the launch at 7pm on Saturday 15 October at Simonds Stadium are available at iwannaticket.com.au/event/the-tournier-foundation-launch-MTEzNjg.

The State Government must “immediately” fund repairs to the Great Ocean Road as landslips threaten to undermine it after recent flooding, parliament has heard. “There have been 80 above the road but, more importantly, 40 below the road, which is causing considerable instability in the road foundation,” Western Victoria MP Simon Ramsay said in the Upper House on Tuesday. “There have even been nets put on some of the cliff faces, which proved useful in the recent rainfall event, but, unfortunately, there is a lot that remains unprotected without the netting to hold it in place.” Mr Ramsay said the Federal Government had made several contributions to the road but Victoria was yet to allocate additional funding. Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said in response that it was “too early to accurately measure the impact of the floods on the region’s road network”. “We will be working closely with local councils to assess the full impact of damages once the flooding has subsided. “This is not a time for political point scoring. Safety is our number one priority and we will not be opening roads or bridges until it is safe.”

For Herne Hill firefighter Jamie Lugg, brotherhood is the most important part of the CFA. Tackling a bushfire or a building ablaze, his fellow firefighters worked side-by-side to protect each other, he said. “You have to be able to rely on your crew and trust them with your life.” But in this year’s Eureka Climb it will Jamie’s blood brother testing his limits. Jamie completed the 1642-step climb – the biggest vertical race in Australia – wearing full kit in 30.52 minutes last year. Cancer retreat a ‘first’ for blokes By Luke Voogt

HOT TIP: Ashlee Gagen knows how to be a winner at the Geelong Cup.

Picture: REG RYAN

'Safe return' TAC’s top tip for the cup The safest bet for next week’s Geelong Cup is separating drinking from driving “altogether”, the Transport Accident Commission has tipped. TAC road safety manager Samantha Buckis said planning a safe return home should be racegoers’ number-one priority if their cup day would involve drinking alcohol. “We want everyone to have a great day out but, more importantly, we want everyone to make good choices and arrive home safely to their loved ones,” Ms Buckis said. “In the excitement of the race day it can be hard for people to keep track of how much alcohol they’ve consumed, so the safest way is to completely separate drinking from driving.” Ms Buckis said any blood-alcohol level impaired judgment and safe driving. Drivers with a .08 level were five times more likely to crash and the risk was tenfold at .12, she warned. “We know everyone will be planning how

Men with brain cancer gathered at an emotional Australian-first retreat at Anglesea last weekend. Organiser Bec Picone said knowing that some of them would “not make it to the next retreat” was humbling. “A lot of the guys said they hadn’t seen their brother or father smile or laugh so much for a long time,” he said. “It was really moving and I’ve been around people with brain cancer a lot for the last few years.” The men indulged in a wide range of activities including eating gourmet food, playing golf and laser strike, four-wheel driving, fishing and canoeing, Ms Picone said. “But, funnily enough, the highlight of the whole trip was a couple of beers and a pack of Uno.” “They were playing until midnight and had a fantastic time. The caravan park people had to tell them to shut up!” The group included a father from Tasmania with a bleak prognosis and his son, Ms Picone said. “They spent some really good quality time together. It was such an intimate group of guys.” Rebecca Picone said the retreat was the first in the country for men with brain cancer and others who had loved ones with the disease. “There are lots of brain cancer research charities but there’s very little in the way of direct support for the families going through it. “It was small compared to our women’s retreat last year.” Ms Picone and brother Clinton founded the Peace of Mind foundation in 2013 after the disease killed his wife. The foundation has given more than $70,000

Pumps fuel into Victoria and work into Geelong. Geelong has a lot to be proud of.

Geelong is staying put. And so is its reÄnery.

Its reÄnery supplies more than 50% of Victoria’s fuel while injecting about $200 million in wages and services into the local economy.

That’s what we’re like in Geelong. And that’s why Viva Energy is proud to be part of this town.

And Viva Energy is investing $350 million to keep local manufacturing safe and sound.

In fact, as one of only four reÄneries left in this country, the Geelong ReÄnery is keeping the local manufacturing industry alive.

‘Unlawful’ blockade ends By Luke Voogt “Unlawful” industrial action at Geelong’s oil refinery was a threat to Victoria’s fuel supply, according to the refinery’s general manager. But a union leader has justified the blockade as necessary to improve safety and “other things” for the refinery’s workers. Workers lifted their week-long blockade of the Viva Energy refinery on Tuesday following an urgent Fair Work Commission hearing. The industrial action has cost the company millions of dollars as it continued upgrading the facility to compete with imports. Refinery general manager Thys Heyns said the “unlawful action” could have seriously impacted Victoria’s fuel supplies. Viva Energy had agreed to conduct a review in

conjunction with WorkSafe Victoria, Mr Heyns said. He defended the refinery’s safety standards. “As a major hazardous facility licensed by WorkSafe, we already operate under a strict safety regime that is regularly audited by independent third parties,” he said. Viva Energy was spending $350 million transforming the refinery into an “internationally competitive operation” for the “hundreds of workers who depend on it”, Mr Heyns said. He thanked the employees, customers and community members who supported the company through the “challenging and uncertain period”. The commission resolution was an “important victory” for refinery employees, said Australian Workers Union Victorian secretary Ben Davis. Unions would join the company and Worksafe in the audit of the site, he said.

“It’s an opportunity to change the safety culture onsite and, more broadly, across Viva.” Mr Davis denied Viva’s earlier claims that the blockade was about “terms and conditions” of employment at the refinery. “Safety was our primary concern, among other things,” he said. “There have been a number of incidents on site and a number of injuries.” Mr Davis dismissed Viva’s claims that the industrial action was unlawful, despite the company obtaining an injunction to end the blockade. “There’s been no finding at law either way,” he said. “None of that changes people’s legitimate right to protest.” Mr Davis said the workers drove the blockade, not the unions: “It was the workers that voted to go on strike but, of course, we support the members in whatever they do.”

GOLDEN DAWN: Photographer Kyle Simpson’s image of the Ozone wreck in early-morning light off Indented Head has inspired a call for online votes to select images for City Hall’s next free calendar. Voting to choose the best of two short-listed entries for each month continues at geelongaustralia.com.au/calendar/vote until the end of next week.

COSTLY: A potting mix bag recovered during contaminant sorting at Geelong's green waste centre.

Call for help with waste sorting bill Contaminants including clothes, plastic bags and “other unsuitable materials” are causing headaches for Geelong’s green waste collection service, according to City Hall. The “significant problem” now cost $700,000 a year for sorting out rubbish before mulching and composting the greenery for other uses, said city services acting general manager Vicki Shelton. Residents could play a “huge part” in reducing the cost and maximising the benefits of the green waste service, Ms Shelton said. The composted waste was spread across farms around the municipality as a “natural nutrient and biological input” for local soils, she said. “This provides a much better environmental outcome than simply depositing garden material into landfill but the main obstacle in the process is contamination of the garden material collected at the source. “Things such as clothing, plastic bags and other unsuitable materials have to be removed by hand from the collected green waste before it goes to the next stage of processing. “This is a tremendous ongoing initiative, but with a little extra help from our residents it can be even better and we can get increased value for our ratepayers’ money.” Ms Shelton said the only items suitable for green waste bins were: soil-free grass clippings and weeds; small logs and raw timber off-cuts, each no larger than 10cm by 30cm; and leaves or similar garden foliage.

Alex inspiring mum Jo to Step Up By Luke Voogt Like any mother, Belmont’s Jo Montano was nervous about sending her son Alex to school for the first time. Alex started school a little later than most, at seven years old, but Jo soon found out she had little to worry about. “The whole school’s just embraced him,” she said. “He loves going there – we’re so blessed with the community we’ve found ourselves in.” Jo will ’Step Up’ with scores of local mothers next weekend walking in support of children with Down syndrome – like Alex. The event has been running in Geelong for four years and Jo helped bring it to the city. “It’s about raising awareness about their potential to contribute to the community,” she said. The event will raise money for Down Syndrome Victoria, which supported Alex’s transition into mainstream schooling. “He’s just started Prep at Oberon Primary School. He’s still learning to read and write like other kids in the class are,” she said. Jo and her husband found out Alex had Down syndrome after his birth, although prenateal screening had indicated he was at increased risk. Jo admitted she was daunted at first and worried about Alex’s prospects of living independently and finding a job. “When you’re given a diagnosis like this you think, ‘What will their life be?’,“ Jo said. “But the more Alex has grown, the more I’ve realised it’s not going to be as challenging as I thought.” While children with Down syndrome have delayed development, Jo believed in her son’s potential. “It takes a little bit of extra effort to get to the milestone but they will get there.” The energetic Alex showed off his T-ball skills with his loving brother and sister in the backyard on Monday.

STEP UP: Alex Montano with mum Jo. 160415 He might have even found a new calling, showing great interest in the Indy photographer’s equipment. Jo helped start Geelong Down Syndrome group for parents to “bounce ideas” about services providers, the National Disability Insurance Agency and more.

“It’s just great having someone to talk to who’s on the same page,” she said. “Kids with Down syndrome are just normal kids and other people with children with Down syndrome understand. They just want to be included.” Step Up Geelong will take place at Steampack-

et Gardens on 22 October. Jo said about 200 people attended the walk last year. She encouraged readers to visit stepupfordownsyndrome.org.au/vic and register for the event. “A lot less wind than last year would be good, too,” she added.

VETERAN: Joe Adamski, almost 30 years at authority.

Diverse role for new water boss Barwon Water will replace its industry-veteran managing director with a Melbourne council chief. Tracey Slatter will take over from Joe Adamski when his contract expires on 31 December after three decades with Barwon Water. Mr Adamski worked his way up through a series of executive positions over the years to reach the top job in 2012. Ms Slatter is City of Port Phillip chief executive officer, a position she earlier held at Colac Otway Shire. She has also had roles with the TAC, Victorian Health Department and G21 Geelong Region Alliance. Barwon Water chair Jo Plummer said Ms Slatter would “drive major priorities including climate change, liveability and workplace diversity. “Tracey is a highly qualified executive with the skills required to lead Barwon Water into a new era of change and opportunity, Ms Plummer said. “Joe Adamski leaves a legacy that sets the organisation on a strong business footing and the board wishes him well for the future.

Ms Plummer declined to reveal whether Mr Adamski reapplied, saying the recruitment process was “confidential“. But his performance as managing director was “more than satisfactory, meeting performance objectives and targets, she said. “Joe has developed and nurtured strong relationships and partnerships with stakeholders, driven increased community engagement, led a successful business consolidation program that has delivered affordable prices for customers and ensured the ongoing financial stability of the organisation. Ms Plummer said Ms Slatter lacked water industry experience but had a “proven track record at senior management level. Water Minister and Bellarine MP Lisa Neville welcomed Ms Slatter’s appointment. “Her experience and skills will be valuable to the corporation as she plays a lead role in promoting liveability, water service delivery and economic growth in the region.

Green homes to open up the gates By Luke Voogt Thomson’s Ernesto Sanchez will show all he can do with a small patch of land when he opens his garden to the public on Sunday. In 60 square meters the Columbian expat has grown 33 fruits and berries, 30 herbs, kept chickens and cultivated an extensive worm farm. “We produce almost no organic waste,” he said. “Everything you see in the garden is secondhand stuff that has been repurposed.” For the first time Ernesto will join 13 other local home-owners displaying their gardens for Geelong Sustainable House Day. “Part of the reason we bought the house was to turn it into a permaculture demonstration site,” he said. Ernesto moved to Geelong in 2013. He worked as a chef for about five years after moving to Australia in 2007 with his wife. “While I was doing that I started wondering about food production.” Then he discovered permaculture, sustainable agriculture based on natural processes. “It’s about trying to replicate those systems in whatever you’re making,” Ernesto said. He has even turned his passion into income, running a worm-farming micro-business from home and working for an Australian kitchengarden program. “Everyone who wants to get something happening can do it,” he said. “First-generation” Bannockburn farmer Chris Balazs will also open his home for the day. Chris developed his farm from getting some cows “to mow the laws” in 2001 to a full-blown sustainable operation. “I used my science and corporate background to do farming a bit differently,” he said. Chris described himself as a “conscious carnivore” who understood animals can be loved but still eaten. “Our ethos with regards to the animals is: awesome life, one bad day.

FARMER: Chris Balazs with pet Judas sheep Furphy. “By that we mean the animals are treated with respect and are kept in a stress-free environment.” Every part of the farm supported another, Chris said. “The ash that comes out of the fire goes into our compost and our compost grows our vegetables. Our vegetables feed us, the waste of the vegetables goes to the chickens and the chickens produce the eggs we eat.” More information on Sustainable House Day is available at geelongsustainability.org.au/ shd_2016.

SUSTAINABLE: Ernesto Sanchez in his Thomson garden.

“ We can’t be detached from the emotion of what we do. The most important quality our team can possess is having the right character — being people who genuinely care about others and work well together to support a grieving family. For us, it’s about treating people how we would want to be treated — that’s our ethos.”

Letters Ford retirees, join the club On behalf of the Kiwanis Club of Geelong, I thank Ford Australia for its support and partnership of Kiwanis All Ford Day Geelong over the past 10 years. The day has been the club’s major fundraiser for over 25 years and one of largest Ford car shows, brining major economic benefits to Geelong as well as various clubs and scout groups. Kiwanis has given funds from the Ford day to beneficiaries including University Hospital Geelong, Geelong Food Relief Centre, Uniting Care, St Vincent De Paul, special-needs groups and emergency assistance projects. As a club helping children, Kiwanis community work and donations help schools with specific projects. Kiwanis also provides a scholarship program for each government school to assist students in need of funding. Initial financial assistance from Ford Australia allowed the club to make a major impact at local and regional levels that might otherwise have been impossible. Ford Australia’s support from Geelong has been greatly appreciated and Kiwanis trusts that all employees find future employment. For those retiring, Kiwanis Club of Geelong is looking for new members whose contribution to club efforts would not only be personally rewarding but give back to the community as well. Phill Knight Kiwanis Geelong Club of Geelong president

Get with the plan, Dan Regional Victoria was snubbed again as Infrastructure Victoria announced that 92 per cent of its recommendations were focused on Melbourne. The State Government introduced this independent body to remove short-term politics from infrastructure planning but just 11 of 134 recommendations targeting regional Victoria, which is short-sighted. This followed Dan Andrews’ city-centric approach, with $34 billion allocated for transport infrastructure in Melbourne while regional Victoria receives just $3 billion. Even the Government’s citizens’ juries say Melbourne dominates the infrastructure plan. If Victoria wants a successful population policy, liveable cities, jobs and a good quality of life for regional residents, our Government must think broader than Melbourne and start committing to transport and infrastructure investments that move people and products efficiently and competitively across the state. Having just returned from an international tour of cities across the world, Victoria appears like a Third World country for infrastructure growth compared to our global partners. Victoria needs statewide population and infrastructure plans that recognise the needs of regional communities. Simon Ramsay MP Member for Western Victoria

ters, 23 September) cared enough to respond to my request for a return to Biblical morality in the previous week’s Geelong Indy. Tim Saclier’s suggestion last week that there is a need for theological research was most welcome and I pray will be followed through. The most influential questions in today’s uncertainty are whether God exists and what God is like. The first can be answered by examining the amazing, irreducible complexity making our existence possible. Intelligence is undeniable. The second demands a thorough examination of basic religious claims presented by their respective texts, such as the Koran and The Bible. To make claims while wilfully ignorant of the knowledge available leads to useless, biased prognostication. The awarded book Wolf Hall and its sequel, Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel reveal the influence of the newly translated English Bible on the spiritual, political and social life of England. These times delivered many martyrs to the flames for the sake of truth but delivered many benefits we still enjoy. Proper theological knowledge also inspired The Enlightenment and the scientific revolution, led by Biblically literate men like Bacon and Newton. These two questions matter. They are personally important as many wonder at the reason for their existence and some are driven to believe life is not worth the effort. The noisy waves of public opinion will come and go but truths that have stood the test of time will prevail. Pastor Frank Lowry Aberdeen St Baptist Church

It’s simple: break law, be punished Tim Saclier (Letters, 30 September) made interesting points, although tongue in cheek, I suspect. While it’s true that divine punishment does exist and has been actuated, divine blessings are also promised for obedience to God’s law. Punishment occurs in various forms, disease being one. Break health laws or rules and we’ll suffer punishment, disease included, such as a dramatic rise in STDs commensurate with reduction in obedience to God’s laws. Many mental health issues, depression and suicide included, result from abortion and socially engineered gender issues forced on children and young adults. Mr Saclier might or might not believe in God and The Bible, which is his prerogative. The reality is that broken laws result in a reaction. As in nature and the cosmos, for every action there’s a reaction. Conversely, break a law and reap a penalty or reaction, whether agreeing with the law or not. Homo sapiens were created with free will, we’re not automatons. Even so, action and reaction still apply to all whether we believe in God or not. Eternal punishment is not the reality of The Bible and many religions do teach this erroneous doctrine. Many people have been terrified, misled and controlled thereby and many have turned from God due to this doctrine. God’s 10 commandments are to be obeyed, with blessings, health and happiness a result from choosing to so do. W Boyd Geelong West

I have chest discomfort, nausea, coughing and headaches and was finally diagnosed with asthma and passive smoking disorder caused by this smoke. I now have to take medication with some side effects only because I live amid wood-fire heater smoke. The council and EPA have been unable to act on my complaints but my fingers are crossed over a recent review into the EPA. Do other readers similar stories? If so, write to the Indy to tell the rest of us. Its 2016, we know about pollution and its effects, so why do we put our health and the health of our children and grandchildren at risk? Move us beyond propaganda Jukka Tuisku congratulated Mik Aidt for “moving us past the debate on global warming”. Perhaps Mr Tuisku could tell us when we had this debate. He can’t because it never happened. True science demands and welcomes debate and challenge but the global warming cult shuts down debate and vilifies anyone daring to question its doctrines. Climate change has been happening for billions of years. Nothing happening today is outside normal climate variability. Last week, a Climate Institute survey that found that only 39 per cent of Australians believe that man is predominantly responsible for global warming. In 2015 a CSIRO survey found similar results. I wish the media would actually investigate the increasingly irrational and absurd claims of doom and gloom rather than just parrot propaganda. Peter Rees Bell Park

a question. How many daily GP consultations in such a clinic does Medicare, considered reasonable? Forty, 50, 60 or more? Since such GPs retain 50 per cent of the scheduled fee for any particular service they provide, they have an obvious interest in pushing through as many people as possible. An income of over $1000 a day is quite possible. Those who actually own the clinic, a business, have a similar interest because they are responsible for all overheads. I get the distinct impression that many GPs are more interested in processing numbers than providing quality medical service. Indeed, I have heard many patients opine this view when referring to bulk billing practices as the equivalent of a factory churning out a service with limited quality control. FINALLY FRIDAY

Fab four get into the familiar beat By Luke Voogt For Fabulous Beatle Boys’ John Kater, playing in a tribute act is all about those born too late to experience the originals. “There are people who want to reminisce and there are people that want to live the moments they missed because they were too young,” he said. Kater said he couldn’t wait to perform in Geelong to give locals the closest thing to the “four lads from Liverpool”. The Beatle’s fascinated Kater as a child but he never got to see their musical genius live. “I was born in ’71 so I missed out but my sisters are considerably older – I used to listen to their vinyls all the time.” Kater, who plays Paul McCartney, described his band mates as an all-star group drawn from various tribute acts. They formed to get “out of the stale format”, he said. “Each of us separately was performing in Beatles shows for ages. I’d like to think that as far as tribute bands go we strive for excellence.” Part of “freshening” the format was imagining what might have been. “Because they stopped touring in 1966 we wear clothes they might have worn if they kept touring,” Kater said. The band has played Beatles’ number ones across the country with the Australian Symphony Orchestra. Recently they performed for a sell-out audience of 2000 people at Hamer Hall. “It was just phenomenal – everyone was standing up and getting into it,” Kater said. Despite The Beatles’ status as one of the greatest bands of all time, Kater said they were “still underrated”. “They are the pioneers of so many things in

HARD DAY'S NIGHT: The Fabulous Beatle Boys in action the pop recording world,” he said. “There are so many layers to them – that’s what I find fascinating.” The Sydney-based Fabulous Beatle Boys features

Chris Frazer as John Lennon, Rod Auld as George Harrison and Nando Pettinato as Ringo Starr. Kater said they were pumped ahead of their upcoming performance at Geelong Performing

FINALLY FRIDAY Funny man with a comedic vision By Luke Voogt

HIGH NOTE: Diane Gardner and the Geelong Harmony Chorus at the Sweet Adelines Australia Regional Contest in Hobart in 2015.

Choir moves in harmony Geelong Harmony Chorus will be in action at the Moolap Baptist Church next Monday as part of the Geelong Seniors Festival. Ocean Grove’s Diane Gardner has been in the choir for 22 years and said there’s “no divas” in the group. “It’s the type of music where everybody has to blend - it’s all a cappella.” The 58-year-old is one of four members of the chorus who will perform at an international competition in Las Vegas later this year. The four will perform in the Melbourne Chorus, which won a wildcard by coming second in an Australian competition. While Diane has other musical gigs, her life-

long friendships have kept her coming back to the Geelong Harmony Chorus. Helping choreograph dance moves for their performances has been another highlight for her. “We’re not just a group of people who just stand and hold our music,” she said. “We like to connect with the audience.” The chorus is always trying to recruit more people to create music, Diane said. “We’d love to have a bigger sound and we can’t do that unless we have more voices." While those looking to join should at least be able to hold a tune, Diane said, they don’t have to be able to read music.

She said part of the appeal of the chorus’s appeal was its emphasis on coaching. Renowned Perth vocal musical director Alex Morris has been with the chorus for the last few years. “The vocal education we get is just amazing,” Diane said. The group is Geelong’s only women’s barbershop chorus and has performed locally for 24 years, Diane said. “We do a lot of singing within the community.” The 34-person chorus competes in interstate competitions every year and will also be “Singing into Spring” at the Potato Shed later this month.

Australian comedy veteran Joe Avati will bring his new show, 20/20 Vision, to Geelong next month as part of his 20th Anniversary tour. The second-generation Italian has performed in the USA, UK and Canada, and had two albums reach number one on the Canadian comedy charts. At shows in Canada during 2001, he sold 6400 tickets in just two hours. “I think I still hold the record for the fastest-selling comedy show there,” he said. Despite Avati’s accolades, the ultimate highlight of his career is FAMILY GUY: Renowned Australian comedian Joe a personal one. “The best thing was I Avati. got the chance to take my grandparents to Canada and film it all in 2002,” he said. Avati still has the recording – a treasured memory of his grandparents who have since passed away. “If I did a movie and won an Oscar that wouldn’t matter – that was still the highlight.” Avati brings the same ‘family man’ attitude to his comedy, which he said was suitable for all ages. “You don’t often see musical theatre where you can get three generations in and all laughing.” Avati said he had loved working with Austen Tayshus, although following “Australia’s best comedian” on stage was not always an easy gig. “He was great but difficult to work with – though not as a person,” he said. “He was very divisive – the audience either loved him or hated him. Either way, you had to go on after him.” Joe Avati will perform at the Sphinx on 3 November.

The Show Must Go On! A tribute show is a sort of carbon copy of the original act. When that band is no longer available to see live a tribute band is the next best thing. Their job is to “channel” the vibe, charisma and to give the same type of communication that the original act oozed. The Australian Queen Tribute Show does just that and I am sure the members of Queen would be grateful of such respect and veneration. It’s a great show with a spot on Freddie Mercury impersonation. FINALLY FRIDAY

So much more than a cover band Melbourne’s David Graham has been singing INXS hits since the band was “at the height of their powers” in the early ’90s. Graham will perform in Geelong this weekend as front-man of tribute act INXSIVE. “The music is fairly timeless which is why they are still so popular today,” he said. “It’s very danceable music – so it appeals to a lot of girls too.” Graham said the band would get the crowd going at the Sphinx this Saturday this with tracks like “Need You Tonight” and “New Sensation” . But the band had been all too happy to perform post-Hutchence songs and tracks from “leftfield” in past shows, he said. “We cover from the first album right up until to Elegantly Wasted. We’re open to crowd requests – we have a very big catalogue of the songs. “But we often find that people were most interested in what Michael was involved in.” Graham remembers the death of lead singer Michael Hutchence in 1997. Shortly after, he said, “INXS cover-bands popped up everywhere”. “I was the only guy in town that had done it before.” Graham brought his singing experience to INXSIVE in 1997 and has been playing with the band since. “They’re such a good group of musos to play with,” he said, “we really bounce off each other and it’s so high energy.” He said the band members were “massive fans” of INXS which was which was “intrinsic in being believable in a tribute.” “To do what we do you have to love the music – the new line-up is without a doubt the best I’ve played with.“ For more information or to book visit sphinxhotel.com.au.

NEW SENSATION: INXSIVE will play in Geelong this weekend.

Tim Carr’s Segway tours through the Leura Park Estate are one of a kind in Geelong, he says. Tim has been cruising through the estate with his fleet of all-terrain Segways for the past 12 months. “Leura Park has a huge amount of space and beautiful scenery which just lends itself to the tour.” Tim, 62 and a retired schoolteacher, learnt to ride the Segway just before starting the business. “Anyone can do it - they all pick it up within five minutes of being on the Segway,” he says. “I’ve had people in their seventies doing it and even an 11-year-old.” The only limits are the vehicle’s 35kg and 115kg weight limits, he says. The former teacher of 30-plus years says his brother inspired him to create Segway Geelong after enjoying similar tours in New Zealand.

“He figured they hadn’t been happening much in Victoria,” Tim says. The business is one of just a few of its kind in Victoria, he says. “Prior to this I’ve focused mainly on adults, but the kids I’ve had have actually been the most skilled,” he says. Parents can have a glass of wine and lunch (from Thursday to Sunday when the cellar door is open). However, he is keen to get parents involved and is offering discount rates for them to ride with their children. Tim says he’s looking to expand his tour to Eastern Beach and has been meeting VicRoads and Geelong Council to make this a reality. “They’ll be going by Christmas,” Tim added. MIKE HANNEYSEE CAR SALES 139 FYANS ST SOUTH GEELONG

Astra lifts the lid By Derek Ogden A CONVERTIBLE has been launched on the back of the Holden Astra range - it comes with the standalone name, Cascada and as a single model, priced at $41,990 plus on-road costs. A limited number of 50 special Cascada Launch Edition vehicles were made available to celebrate the return of the convertible body style to the Holden range. Buyers are spoilt with the luxury of premium Nappa leather appointed and ventilated front seats and a leather sports steering wheel. Other special treats include 20-inch alloy wheels, adaptive forward lighting and Bi-Xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lamps. Manufactured in Europe, the new Astra and its Cascada cousin are both designed and engineered at the Opel Russelsheim base in Germany. The Cascada has the classic looks of a fourseater convertible adapted to modern-day use of materials. The sharp front shows off the latest styling in the way the projector headlamps, daytime running lights and front foglamps flank the robust radiator grille, blending into fenders unadorned with unnecessary decoration. The shoulder line shoots uninterrupted in a straight line rearwards to the top of a deep-set boot with enough space for 280 litres of gear with the roof open, or 380 litres with it closed. The rear is also free of clutter, carrying only the vital information ‘Cascada’ and ‘Turbo’. Up or down, the triple-layer acoustically insulated cloth roof blends in well with the rest of the car. Cascada rolls on 18-inch alloy wheels, with a 17inch steel space-saver. Depending on whether it’s glass half full or half empty, the cabin is a four-seater or 2+2. Suffice to

The Cascada is a classic example of a four-seater convertible without the premium price. say it has more space than most in its class but still isn’t exactly comfortable for adults in the back seats. Perforated leather upholstered front and back seats are supportive in sharp manoeuvres. A heated leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel and alloy pedals add to a feeling of being in a premium sporty Holden. An extensive multi-function display comes up with vehicle information, trip information, fuel economy and warning/messages The MyLink infotainment system incorporates a seven-inch colour screen display, integrated Pandora, Stitcher and TuneIn Radio apps, as well as satellite navigation. Added is DAB digital radio, a single CD player with MP3 capability, hands-free Bluetooth with audio streaming, USB and auxiliary input jack. The 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine, mated with a six-speed automatic transmission, is aimed at producing easy driving with some spirit on hand when called upon. Also a bonus from turbo technology is the Cascada’s fuel economy, which on test clocked 6.1 litres per 100 kilometres on the open road and a surprisingly frugal 10.5 litres per 100 kilometres in city and suburb driving.

The team from Hunter Cuthill.

Hunter Cuthill and Autologic deliver power, save on petrol IMPROVING a car’s power by up to 30 per cent while actually improving fuel economy sounds like a big ask for a Land Rover, BMW, Mini or Jaguar or other European marques. Not so, says Hunter Cuthill director Adam Hunter. It’s readily achievable by using top-line Autologic technology, he advises, adding that it’s also a sound way of ensuring efficiency performance in a more-sustainable fashion. Hunter Cuthill, in Geelong West’s Autumn St, specialises in quality independent servicing and repairs to all BMWs, Land Rover, Mini and Jaguars - as per factory schedules and directives and with full book service. The business also services car makes including Peugeot, Renault and Citroen. It is the only service centre in Geelong outside of direct dealers with the software and diagnostic equipment for these brands. “We utilise state of the art diagnostic equipment from Autologic, the world’s leading independent vehicle diagnostic software,” Adam says. “It’s the only independent tool that can program control units. Autologic also offer software power upgrades for diesel and some petrol engines, giving 30 per cent more power while improving fuel economy.” Hunter Cuthill is also right across the best battery choices to meet the energy demands of European cars. VARTA batteries, powered by AGM technology, feature advanced equipment such as start-stop technologies and regenerative braking systems. “This is a battery that delivers optimal performance, faster conductivity and reliable starting power, even when the charge is low,” Adam says. “AGM batteries deliver up to eight times the cyclic stability of conventional flooded batteries resulting in a longer battery life.” Hunter Cuthill is at 9 Autumn St, Geelong West, phone 5229 4299 or visit huntercuthill. com.au.

With 40 years in the business, Barwon Tyre Centre’s Graeme McMahon has its customers’ tyre needs covered. Graeme has watched the industry evolve to offer the large variety of brands and types available today. “I’ve seen plenty of changes in the tyre industry in that time,” he said. “We used to have five manufacturers in Australia. There are 40 different brands now - if not more.” Graeme purchased Barwon Tyre Centre eight years ago and works beside his son Luke, who has followed in his footsteps since the age of 14. “He’s done a mechanical apprenticeship so he can do both the tyre and mechanical side of things,” Graeme said. Graeme said he takes the time to find out his customers’ requirements and financial situation. He has everything from “entry level” to top brand tyres. The company also does mechanical work, including major and minor services. “The personalised service is what we pride ourselves on,” he said. “A lot of our customers are repeat business and we get to know them by their name.” Graeme, 56, hopes his son can take over the family owned business when he retires. “But only if he behaves himself,” he joked. The business has sponsored Camp Quality for eight years and supports the Belmont Lions Football Club and the Belmont and Highton bowls clubs. Graeme is also keen “help the local schools” by with work experience and currently employs a local apprentice. The Barwon Tyre Centre offers a courtesy car service.

SPORT Cats have a good crack at match LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club finally got their season underway on Saturday when they travelled to Melbourne University for a one-day game. Batting first, the Cats lost two early wickets, but from there skipper Eamonn Vines and gun recruit Brenton McDonald steadied the ship with a 55-run stand. When they were both dismissed in quick succession though, the rot set in and a steady flow of wickets saw a promising start turn into a disappointing 151 all out. The Geelong bowlers knew that with a small total on the board, early wickets were key, and when Tom Smith struck early, the boys were up and about. However, despite their best efforts, the attack lacked penetration and Melbourne Uni put together a series of partnerships to cruise to a sixwicket victory. Tomorrow, the boys return to Kardinia Park to host Fitzroy Doncaster who also lost their first game, thrashed by Camberwell.

Both teams look evenly matched, so if the Cats can be switched on and prepared to battle it out for the full 100 overs, this could be a golden opportunity to get some points on the board and kickstart their season. The Geelong Cricket Association got underway last weekend with a full round of games completed in division one. Reigning premier Grovedale got off to a shaky start, thrashed at home by a new look South Barwon outfit. For the Tigers, gun recruit Glen Talarico did his bit, making 41 in a 58-run partnership with Gareth Yelland who made 39, but with no other batsman really firing, they had to settle for just 140 all out. Nick Lynch was the star for the Swans, taking 3/19 in his first game for the club. In reply, South lost David Linke early for just two, but from there completely dominated the remainder of the game, cruising to a nine-wicket win. Anthony Quarrell, recruited from Newcomb and District in the off-season, made a blistering 80 not out, while Luke Ford made 54. Grovedale will look to bounce back tomorrow,

but that won’t be easy against North Geelong who had a big win against St Peter's, while South Barwon will want to consolidate their win by backing up against Geelong City. SOUTH BARWON v Geelong City, LARA v Murgheboluc, EAST BELMONT v St Joseph's, Newtown and Chilwell v LEOPOLD, St Peter's v BELL POST HILL, Grovedale v NORTH GEELONG. In division two, all games bar one managed to get a result last week, but neither Torquay not Marshall were able to get a wicket prepared meaning they shared the points. Of the games that that did get underway, the one between reigning premier St Albans Breakwater and Bell Park looked like being the most intriguing, with both clubs adding a bevy of stars to their line-ups over the winter. For the Dragons, the addition of the Lymer brothers paid immediate dividends, Shane looking good with a handy 12 at number 3, while skipper Michael knocked up a classy 42 in a solid partnership with Ash Carter who top scored with 48. For the Saints, Sean Bogan was the pick of the bowlers with 3/35, but by the end of the first in-

nings, Bell Park looked favourites with 237 on the board. They showed why immediately after the tea break, taking two quick wickets, before John Irvine and star recruit Andrew Fergusson set about resurrecting the run chase. But when they fell for 23 and 32 respectively, things looked grim. Lucas Cameron made a fighting 44 at number eight, but it was all in vain as his side was dismissed for 188, handing six crucial early-season points to Bell Park. Tomorrow, Bell Park plays Geelong West which lost last week to Alexander Thomson. It would be hard to see the Dragons lowering their colours after such a dominant first up win. Meanwhile, St Albans Breakwater will take on Marshall. The Saints look the better side on paper, and will benefit from having a game under their belt, while Marshall are still an unkown and might be slightly underdone. All of this points to a St Albans Breakwater win. MANIFOLD HEIGHTS v Thomson, Modewarre v HIGHTON, Alexander Thomson v NEWCOMB AND DISTRICT, BELL PARK v Geelong West, Marshall v ST ALBANS BREAKWATER, Guild Saints v TORQUAY.

Cat at career-best

TWO UP: Peri Stavropoulos and Chris Pitman with a pair of snapper caught off the Mornington Peninsula last weekend.

Geelong forward Daniel Menzel has agreed to a contract extension with the Cats after overcoming four knee reconstructions. Menzel endured his first reconstruction in 2011 but played 18 games during his 2016 comeback season to register a career-best 33 goals. Menzel believed he would improve in 2017 after another strong pre-season lead. “The club always stood by me and so the challenge and focus for me was always getting through a full season,” he said. “I expect with another pre-season I’ll be in even better position to contribute in 2017. We have exciting times ahead and I want to play my part in the club having success.” Cats football general manager Steve Hocking said that Menzel would be even stronger next season. “Dan showed us he’s all capable of playing out a full season and we’ve been very happy with his contribution to the team,” Steve Hocking said. “He displayed the ability to create scoring opportunities and to bring team-mates into the games as well as the goal sense that he has always had. “We expect Dan to get stronger with this full season under his belt and to make an even more significant contribution to the team in 2017.” Menzel suffered his first knee injury in the 2011 qualifying final win over Hawthorn. He returned to the AFL in round 22 of 2015, and enjoyed his first full season back this year. He established a new career best with 25 disposals in the round six win over Gold Coast and had seven games with multiple goals. Menzel booted four goals on four times and was held goalless in two of his 18 games this year. The 25-year-old has kicked 69 goals from his 41 games since debuting in 2010.

Wind whips up the waves but there’s still plenty of fish ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Anglers ducked for cover from gale-force winds again over the past week. Locations like the Queenscliff harbour provided cover for anglers to bag fantastic numbers of pinkie snapper to 2kg along with some impressive silver trevally to 45cm. Casting cut pilchards on the run-in tide from the entrance of the harbour worked well, as did soft plastics rigged on heavy jig heads, while squid were caught on 2.5 jigs on slack tide. Clifton Springs produced snapper to 7kg for persistent anglers. The Point Richards channel was a great place to start but snapper were also encountered on the spoil grounds to the north and also around Alcoa Pier. Barry Wood was back at it again off Indented Heads. Drifting slowly, he boated five nice-sized flathead using bluebait. 30 GEELONG INDY Friday, 14 October, 2016

Further around the peninsula, the Barwon River estuary fished well for mullet, salmon, whiting and trevally. Anglers fishing from the sand toward the mouth achieved the best results, especially on pippies and a lightly weighted running sinker rigs. Peri and Michael Stavropoulos and I launched from St Leonards and travelled over to Mornington on Saturday afternoon to pitch bait for snapper. Peri soon caught a 7kg fish, another snapper of 5kg was caught shortly afterward and a seal snatched Mick’s much larger specimen as the net went into the water. Down the western district, bream and estuary perch began appearing again down the lower reaches of the Hopkins River. Both bait and lure accounted for fish. Freshwater anglers kept boating brown trout from Lake Purrumbete while trolling Daiwa Double Clutch lures along the east bank at first or last light. Lake Bullen Merri gave up the odd Chinook

salmon on trolled lures and lightly weighted pilchard fillets. Land-based anglers caught redfin to 40cm at Wurdee Boluc Reservoir on lures with some weight behind them, such as Norries Wasabys. Fisheries have begun a fantastic stocking effort after the recent rains to replenish waterways such as Lake Bolac, Deep Lake and Lake Toolirook just to name a few, so anglers should keep them in mind for coming months. This Sunday’s Gone Fishing Day will offer a free fishing workshop near Geelong’s waterfront Carousel between 9am and 3pm. Other activities will include a Fisheries discovery trailer, casting practice and more. Next week’s hopefully improved weather should make Clifton Springs and the deeper water off Portarlington worth a shot for snapper, while Queenscliff Harbour should have pinkies and trevally on the chew. Freshwater anglers could try Wurdee Boluc, which should fire up any time now.

GOING FORWARD: Daniel Menzel will keep his eye on the ball for the Cats after signing a new contract. (Louisa Jones)
