Jason McDonald flanked by workmates Dan Young, Quin Griffin, Chris Harvey, Tony O’Donovan and Billy Morrison. 160293 were always looking out for me. A few times I said to them I’ll be right.” With the help of a case manager and occupational rehabilitation provider, he was forced to take routine half-hour breaks to manage his heavy fatigue. He was diligently attending to up to four days of intensive rehabilitation sessions a week to heal his physical and mental demons. “It was pretty hard when you’re strong-willed like I am to take orders from doctors that you don’t know. “But I realised they know this stuff better than I do.” It was a new situation for his proud boss Mr

O’Donovan – who applied his maxim of matching his workers’ tasks to their capabilities. His recollection of the crash is vivid. Workers were wondering why Mr McDonald wasn’t back from his lunch break, why police had closed local roads and a helicopter was hovering over the scene. The obvious and horrific conclusion soon dawned on Mr O’Donovan. Then he made that difficult call to Mr McDonald’s wife. “I believe he’s going to be OK but he’s gone by air ambulance to The Alfred,” Mr O’Donovan told her. More than a year later, when asked what he learnt through all this, Mr O’Donovan said:

“Nothing is guaranteed.” The silver lining for his fully-recovered worker Mr McDonald is that he is becoming more selfaware. He uses meditation to help manage the moodiness that descends as part of his injuries. The wake-up call has made him put more priority on his family. He pays tribute to his wife who carried a great extra burden. To this day, he has not been able to resume karate with his two daughters – and is not sure if he ever will. “I’m focusing on the important things in life. You never know what’s around the corner.” 12325111-40-16

Jason McDonald’s boss describes it as a “bloody horrible accident”. Soon after Mr McDonald left on a lunch run, he was critically injured when he was a passenger in a crash with a parked truck on Wedgewood Road, Hallam. He had taken the brunt of the impact – and who knew if and when he was going to return to his workplace Seelite Windows and Doors just 200 metres away. As police cordoned off the scene he was stretchered into an air ambulance and flown to The Alfred’s Intensive Care Unit. He had multiple fractures throughout his left side, a broken neck, internal bleeding and a serious head injury. At that stage – in June 2015 – Seelite production manager Tony O’Donovan was trying to calm his voice as he delivered the unsettling news to Mr McDonald’s wife. On 7 October this year, his worker was recognised as a finalist in the Worker Return to Work Achievement category in this year’s Worksafe Awards. It recognised Mr McDonald’s brave road back with the immense support of his employer, workmates, family and a crew of rehab helpers. Before his return, Mr McDonald had itchy feet. He says he hates sitting still – something he had to do a lot while recuperating at his Ringwood East home. He was restricted to a two-kilo lifting limit which barred him from even the most simple chores such as unpacking the washing machine, mowing the lawns or vacuuming. “I was ready to just sticky-tape my arm and come back,” he said. He made the decision to return to Seelite with his insurer’s reluctant blessing just three months after the crash – 12 weeks ahead of schedule. He initially worked for two hours a week on light duties, with breaks every 30 minutes. Within a year, he was back at basically full capacity and had successfully re-tested for his driver’s licence. Looking back, Mr McDonald remembers nothing of the accident. Even his first few gentle days back at work – initially just two hours a week – were a bit of a haze. “When I got back, people (in the workshop)

COUNCIL ELECTIONS 2016

Campaign race row hits election By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey mayor Sam Aziz has reported a council election candidate and 26 other apparent supporters to the National Security Hotline over a Facebook post that accuses Cr Aziz of being antiMuslim. The post by an apparent supporter of Springfield Ward candidate Faisal Najibi on 8 October urges Muslims not to vote for Cr Aziz under the mistaken assumption that he’s Muslim. “Sam Aziz is a strong ANTI MUSLIM and he is NOT a Muslim,” the post states. “I request all the Muslim community not to vote for him.” It described Cr Aziz as being in “strong opposition” to the new Afghan mosque proposed in Narre Warren North. On 11 October, Cr Aziz responded on Facebook that “these kind of people are extremely dangerous” and the post’s language was “abhorrent”.

“Knowing how they have operated in the past, this could incite violence against me. “Please share. Please beware.” Cr Aziz said the post invited people to “vote on religious lines” and made “unfounded allegations against me because I do not belong to a certain religion.” “Yet they accuse me of being racist!” Cr Aziz told Star News that the post was turning the election into a fight between “Muslims versus the rest of us” and recklessly attempting to incite violence against him. He said he would report Mr Najibi, the apparent author Atal Amin and 26 other tagged names to the National Security Hotline. “You don’t know what crack-pot is out there, sees anti-Muslim in capitals and what it might mean to them.” When asked about Muslims who also felt fearful in the current political climate, Cr Aziz said: “That’s not my problem.” “I’m not anti-Muslim. I’m anti-terrorist and

I make decisions (on the mosque) on planning grounds. “My problem is administering the law of local government. Because I have rejected an application on planning grounds ... I shouldn’t be victimised for that. “We keep making laws for them. People will make excuses for them. People with attitudes like this will destroy what is a beautifully balanced society that we have today. “When these people get away with that type of language ... then we’ll have a problem.” Mr Amin, a Casey businessman, that day deleted the post and denied its authorship. The same day Cr Aziz later posted he’d received a “threatening” follow-up text from Mr Amin – which the mayor said he’d report to local police. The message requested Mr Amin’s photo to be removed from Cr Aziz’s post or he’d report the matter to police and the media. Cr Aziz also posted a screenshot of a post by

Aziz makes a case for re-election Sam Aziz, the City of Casey Mayor, is standing for reelection in Springfield Ward. He makes the case for why voters should stick with the status quo. At this election, please do not gamble with Casey’s future. We are seeing a huge number of candidates nominate. Some of these are new to the scene; others are either unsuccessful former councillors, or unsuccessful former candidates. Almost all of them, without exception, are parroting tokenistic slogans, without outlining a plan of how they intend to achieve anything. Again, almost without exception, they are all claiming that they will deliver lower rates, accountability and transparency, as if the current council has not done well in any of these areas. Nothing can be further from the truth! The facts are that this council has been the best performing since the formation of the City of Casey 21 years ago. Gone are the headlines in the news about dysfunction and councillors in-fighting. These have been replaced with headlines about council setting the agenda for a great city and a very bright future. They have claimed that coun-

cil does not consult enough. What absolute rubbish! Council consults on every major decision. We undertook consultation before we decided to build Bunjil Place, and we found out that 81 per cent of our residents support it. We also recently undertook consultation about the future of our city, which has seen a massive response. We are close to our residents and we have regular conversations. Some have also spoken about the monitor appointed by the State Government. The reality is that this was a political move, undertaken over some $2200 discrepancy across 37 properties for a private road (average of $59 per property). This ended up costing the ratepayers a massive $25,000 in fees for the monitor. $2,200 error! $25,000

Time for considered change

in unfair fees imposed by the State Government, which now need to be carried by our ratepayers. The monitor concluded that Casey had done everything to address the minor error and his report about council was described by a representative of the minister’s office as “glowing”! What is the problem then? Why are they still attacking Casey over this ridiculous issue? Why are they also ignoring the fact the Victorian Auditor General and the Independent Audit and Ethics Committee have given Casey top marks for its financial performance on behalf of its ratepayers? That same group – failed former councillors and failed former candidates – have been spreading that our residents are unhappy with the council. How can that be when our latest community satisfaction survey shows Casey excelling in every measure above the state average, including achieving a whopping seven points above the state average in the area of council leadership and direction? Casey is now in a great place. I ask you not to be fooled by their hollow slogans. Casey’s bright future will be placed at risk. Please consider voting for those who have already demonstrated they can deliver – not those that have only been able to demonstrate failure, and are now seeking to be returned, when they have been comprehensively rejected by Casey voters previously. 1202687-PB45-15

AGAINST CHANGE

TAX RUN

Mr Najibi that labelled one of Cr Aziz’s running mates – who is a Muslim and architecture student – an “idiot” for preferencing the mayor. “I support all communities. I won’t support the disregard of the law, or anyone clearly in auto jihad mode,” Cr Aziz wrote. “Feeling sensitive there, Faisal? “Keep showing your true colours.” Casey Against Racism spokeswoman Lorraine Pratley said Cr Aziz “must have some sense how terrifying”, and his threat to call the National Security Hotline would be to Muslims. “I think he’s the one being threatening. “In his upside down world, he’s appealing to his hard-right voter support.” Casey Against Racism is advocating to vote all current councillors last due to their unanimous rejection of the mosque. It has endorsed 11 candidates, including Mr Faisal. Mr Faisal declined to comment.

FOR CHANGE Retired Cranbourne businessman Barry Drayton is advocating for change at this month’s Casey election. Here Mr Drayton sets out the case for change. The good news is that we have 81 candidates standing for election as a councillor at the forthcoming Casey Council Local Government elections. The bad news is that all eleven of the current councillors are standing for reelection. It is timely and imperative that we all ‘check out’ their claimed achievements over the past four years. Current Councillor re-election promotional material features terms like “advocated for”, “lobbying for”, “responded to”, “petitioned against” and on and on. Apart from commencing the erection of the incredibly expensive and totally unnecessary ego boosting new building to enable current councillors to live in workplace luxury and point to and say, “I built that”, we must search for what the current council has achieved to support and benefit the City of Casey and each of us, as ratepayers. The list of “advocated for” and the many other warm fuzzy terms is long, the outcomes, not so much (in some cases, not at all). It is important to ask why councillors and it seems, the current mayor in particular, are so very sensitive to any form of opinion that is in any way contrary to theirs, remembering of course it is us, the ratepayers who put them there and to whom they owe allegiance.

World’s

Worthy of thought and consideration when deciding how to vote is that discounting endless photo opportunities seized by current Casey councillors, how often in the past four years have you heard from, been contacted by, or in any way provided with evidence that your currently elected and outgoing councillors have the interests of each of us as ratepayers in any way a part of their agenda. There is no doubt the residents of Casey can and should be better served. Given there are 70 candidates standing for re-election, excluding the incumbents, make careful choices, and for the future of the growth of Casey in favour of all residents, place every existing councillor last when completing the ballot paper. It has been used before, but…… “It’s time for a change”.

Looking Back 100 years ago 12 October 1916 Patriotic Mrs A W Pearson has been appointed to take charge of a section in Collins Street, Melbourne, on Friday 20th - “Hospital Button Day” - and donations of flowers, jams, pickles, and any kind of saleable goods to help stock the kiosk will be thankfully received. 50 years ago 11 October 1966 Telephone numbers to change Plans for an automatic telephone exchange at Berwick progressed a further stage when a new building in Gloucester Avenue was officially handed over to the PMG recently. The building will use modern switching equipment, which has been adopted for all future automatic exchanges in Australia. It is designed to enable the telephone

Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society network to develop towards the ultimate of nation-wide dialling for all subscribers. The existing telephone numbers of Berwick subscribers will have to be changed and new numbers consisting of seven digits in the number range 797 1000 upwards will be allotted. The Berwick exchange is part of the large Dandenong local network and is within local call distance of the Melbourne metropolitan network. Conversion to automatic working will result in almost all local calls being subscriberdialled. Those calls which will require the assistance of an operator will be handled at the Dandenong exchange. 20 years ago 21 October 1996 Cathie blasts our ‘raw deal’ Times have been tough for the City of Greater

Dandenong council, but after the state and federal budgets there could be tougher times to come. The city’s commissioners believe the Federal Government has given the council a raw deal. At last Monday’s meeting, chief commission Mr Ian Cathie criticised the Federal Government for not giving help to areas such as Dandenong and Springvale. He said the city had high unemployment and a number of people for whom English was a second language but still did not receive the federal support they deserved. At the same time other councils were supposedly getting “huge” payouts through the grants system. Mr Cathie said the city’s ability to provide services for a growing community increasingly depended on government funds since the state had imposed a 20 per cent reduction in rates and the capping of rate levels at the

1995-’96 levels. “The rates now supply less than half of our budget, so we are more and more dependent on government handouts. But I think we are getting a poor deal,” Mr Cathie said. 5 years ago 17 October 2011 Marathon man backs up again St Mary’s Primary School principal Greg White had more to overcome than tired legs when he took part in the recent Melbourne Marathon - he had to overcome a quadruple bypass. Mr White took part in the marathon for the first time last year and suffered a cardiac arrest when his heart stopped for six minutes. “Prior to the race I was pretty fit, very fit in fact. The last few kilometres were a bit of a strain, to the point that I was just shuffling my feet,” he said.

We’ve gone far with your support I took an interest in local council back in 1989 after I attended many council meetings in Dandenong. I might say, a lot of people do not care about any form of government let alone councils, but in what other form of government can you get hold of your representative and sit down and have a chat with relative ease? I have always found the best part of my role as a city councillor has been the people l have met and the opportunities I’ve had. I consider myself to be very privileged to represent the city l was born in. Of course, the meetings have also been important as we are probably one of the biggest businesses in the city. We do so much – l don’t think a lot of the community would understand what a large part councils play in our daily life. We offer so many services from aged services to recreation facilities for the young to the old.

We have migrant and environmental services, and many more that can’t be mentioned here. We have a market that not only helps with an income to this council but has been around for 150 years, started by those who came well before me. What a great asset they have left you and l. We have one of the biggest manufacturing areas in Australia, so the return to this council in rate revenue helps subsidise the residential rates by quite a large amount. One of our biggest budget items is our waste

disposal. Most people would not understand what that entails. Not only do we operate rubbish collections, but we also provide street cleaning, stormwater drain clearing, footpath maintenance in retail areas, garden and park cleansing, as well as picking up dumped rubbish and hard waste. I could not imagine any other form of government doing what councils do. l’m not saying we get it right all the time, but l know we generally do a good job. It’s easy for shock jocks to criticize councils but they know little of the service we provide. This council is a $200 million business and has about 1000 people working full-time and parttime. We are one of the biggest employers in the city offering about 140 business units to our ratepayers. Can you imagine any state government trying to do what this council does? The easiest thing to do is be critical of councils

WHITEGOODS

but l don’t see them going away any time soon. In the UK they don’t have state governments and it works quite well from what l have seen. So with elections coming up this Saturday, it’s important to have your say on who will represent you. Sadly politics plays a big part in council now and is a far cry from when l started back in 1991. Don’t waste your vote. Talk to your candidates and ask them the hard questions. After 25 years l feel it’s time to move on and to see what the next challenge in life is for me. I feel very privileged to have been able to represent the people of this great city for so long. I hope my contribution to our city has helped in some small way. To all those people who have supported me, l thank you for the opportunity you have given me. How lucky I am to have travelled this journey together with you? If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.

Eight years’ jail for kidnapper By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has been jailed for up to eight-and-a-half years over a “terrifying” armed home invasion in Narre Warren South, as well as two kidnappings and a car-jacking in March and April this year. Henry Toatoalei, 29, of Noble Park, pleaded guilty to 15 charges at the County Court of Victoria on 7 October including charges of possessing a sawn-off shotgun and a sawn-off rifle as a prohibited person. Toatoalei made full admissions, including kidnapping a man under the pretence of supplying him methamphetamine in Fountain Gate shopping centre car park about 5am on 18 March. Once lured into the back seat of a Mercedes Benz four-wheel drive, the victim was put in a choke-hold by Toatoalei while another passenger punched the victim to the head and face. As he was driven from the car park, the victim was unable to breathe and lost consciousness due to the choke-hold. The victim was stripped of his shoes and shorts, and robbed of $1400 cash, mobile phone, cigarettes and 0.5 grams of ice – as well as the keys of the victim’s father’s Statesman parked at Fountain Gate. Toatoalei admitted to then stealing the Statesman. About 5.30am on 2 April, Toatoalei pulled a shotgun on a man parked in a hotel car park in Cranbourne and forced the victim to climb into their own vehicle’s boot as part of a debt-collection operation. The accused held the weapon to the man’s face and told him he’d shoot the victim in the leg if he didn’t comply. Toatoalei drove the victim’s Calais, with the victim in the boot, and co-offenders following in another car.

During the journey, the victim has managed to escape the boot into the front seat, and pleaded for Toatoalei to desist. Toatoalei punched and then slammed the shotgun’s butt into the victim’s face several times. The accused attempted to blackmail the victim to sign over his car, but the victim was able to pop the boot during the journey and escape. At 8am, Toatoalei – while armed with a shotgun – and an unidentified male broke into the victim’s home in Narre Warren South. The intruders forced three occupants out of their bedrooms, ordered them to lay on their stomachs in the lounge room and demanded the whereabouts of the victim. Toatoalei held a shotgun to the head of the victim’s brother and told him that the victim would be “dead”. The house was then looted of wallets, phones, a TV, X-Box and video games. On 7 April, a man and woman were forced out of a car at gunpoint by Toatoalei as well as other armed offenders in Springvale South. The accused admitted to police he had lured the victim with the promise of drugs then stole the car and gave it to a friend. During a Special Operations Group police raid of his home, a sawn-off rifle and sawn-off shotgun, a small amount of the drug ice and identity cards of the home invasion victims were found. Judge Marshall said Toatoalei was Samoanborn and subject to a dysfunctional background. There was still a chance of rehabilitation for the accused provided he overcame his long-standing alcohol and ice abuse, the judge said. Toatoalei’s non-parole period was set at five years.

Health Minister Jill Hennessy, Premier Daniel Andrews and Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley at Casey Hospital.

Premier visit announces more beds Casey Hospital will grow by 160 beds and four operating theatres under a boosted expansion announced by the State Government on 9 October. The Government said it would inject an extra $28.6 million into the project - which will now cost $135 million - due to soaring demand for acute health care in Melbourne’s south-east. Without the extra boost it was expected that demand would outstrip supply within two years of the project’s completion. Construction is expected to start next year on the extension, which includes an intensive care unit and a day surgery unit. It is expected to open for patients in late 2019. New education and training facilities for medical, nursing and allied health students will also be built under a partnership between Monash Health and Monash University. As one of Australia’s fastest growing areas, Casey is home to a record 86 babies born each

week and an average 7300 extra residents a year. At the hospital on 9 October, Health Minister Jill Hennessy said investment was needed to meet demand in the future. Premier Daniel Andrews said a “bigger, better” Casey Hospital would mean more families in the south-east can get treatment close to home. Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley will lead a community advisory group to help “shape” the project. “Our community is a growing one and as we expand Casey Hospital to meet the needs of local families. “We want them all to have a say and work with us every step of the way. “We know just how important this project is to the local community, that’s why we committed to funding it prior to the state election and are now delivering.”

Police advise anyone who is frightened by a ‘scary clown’ to call triple zero. Casey police have issued a warning on the ‘scary clown’ movement – soon after a man allegedly wearing a clown mask, wielding an axe and approaching a woman in a car was arrested in Moe. “We know a lot of people are involved for a bit of fun but we want to be clear – this behaviour is not amusing, and in many cases it is criminal,” police posted on their Casey Eye Watch page on Facebook. Recently a clown was snapped outside the Empire night club in Narre Warren at night - with the image spread over social media. Empire Nightclub shared the photo with the warning: “Believe it or not, this isn’t the biggest clown we have seen at the club before!! Stay Safe Everyone.” It was later followed by a comment that revealed that it was the ‘Empire Clown’ which would make an appearance at a Halloween event. Congrats to councillor Wayne Smith who has marked 20 years on Casey council. He’s the only Casey councillor who has served on the council uninterrupted since it was conceived in 1996. Cr Smith is seeking re-election to extend the run to 24 years.

Casey councillor Damien Rosario has confirmed his Liberal Party membership after leaving that question blank in a recent Star News survey. Cr Rosario, who is re-contesting his River Gum Ward seat in this month’s council elections, said he’d left the question blank because his political affiliations were “irrelevant”. “I am running as an independent,” he told Star News. A candidate blanched when told by the council that it would cost him $150 per sign to retrieve his confiscated material or it would be destroyed within 14 days. Casey council chief executive Mike Tyler said as of 11 October, the council had impounded 80 signs under a local law banning signs on roads, streets, nature strips and bike paths. Mr Tyler said the council had not received any applications for permits. “There are numerous locations for signage to be displayed in the city with the appropriate permit,” he said.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Teething problems at the newly-opened $1.1 million Endeavour Hills Community Space have emerged. Residents have reported varnish leeching from timber seats and lighting switched off outside the library and gym at night at the revamped suburb hub. A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said she felt unsafe walking from the library to the rear western car park at night due to the lack of lighting and no footpath linking a rear car park. Casey Council chief executive Mike Tyler said the defects had been referred to contractors for rectification under a 12-month “defects liability” clause. “It is common for minor defects or issues to arise shortly after the completion of any major construction, which is why (the) council includes a 12-month defects liability period within its contracts.” Mr Tyler said the lights were operational, but

the contractor had “set the clock incorrectly”. “This was adjusted earlier this week and the lights now operate from 8pm to 6am daily.” He said the stains due to the “natural leeching process” from the timbers would be cleaned “once leeching has ceased”. The western car park would be linked by a footpath under a separate project partnered with Endeavour Hills shopping centre owners Markis Group, Mr Tyler said. “Two other footpath connections have already been delivered just prior to the Town Square; one connecting the southern car park to the residential area to the east, and one providing safe travel from Matthew Flinders Avenue.” The project has also included a kiosk and stage area. Four Oaks ward councillor Rafal Kaplon said the project was complex and had many stages to come. “Council’s consultation process with the community received immense support from residents for the project and having spoken to a few residents the feedback has been positive.”

United effort in caring for carers By Victoria Stone-Meadows This Mental Health Week, the Hampton Park Uniting Church honoured those who are often forgotten in the discussion around mental health issues. On Tuesday 11 October, the Uniting Church held a lunch to honour those who care for friends and family members who suffer from a mental illness. The lunch was attended by carers who meet regularly at the church and use the space to share their experiences in a safe and judgment-free environment with the help of lifeAssist. Moderator of the Uniting Church Synod of Victoria and Tasmania, Reverend Sharon Hollis, spoke at the lunch about her own experiences caring for her late husband who suffered severe depression. “My partner has chronic depression that he tragically died of,” she said. “I had been a carer for him and continue to care for my daughters who have bad times occasionally. “It is a tough space but rewarding space and important for a community of carers when caring for people with a mental illness to have a space like this.” “Mental illness has a hidden nature and people can look very well when they meet other people, but if you live with this every day, you know they are struggling and carers struggle too.” Rev Hollis spoke on the importance of carers to have a support network around them and about sustaining and strengthening these spaces for the mental health of carers themselves. Members of the carers group told of how important the group had been for them in helping them care for their loved ones while looking out for themselves as well. “It’s a great outlet,” carer June White said. “It’s really good to talk to other people and not worry about who are looking after and it’s helpful for your own mental health to hear other people’s experiences.” Linda (last name withheld) said the group had

Rev Mat Harry, Diane Leak, Carer Michelle, Aimi Johnson from lifeAssist and Rev Sharon Hollis in the Hampton Park Community Garden. 160428 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS been a great boon for her as she felt overwhelmed by her caring duties before she found the group. “It’s the highlight of my week, I look forward to Tuesdays,” she said. “If I didn’t have this group, I don’t know where I would be. “It’s been a really great support through tough times; feeling like you are not alone and there are

others out there going through not the same thing exactly but there is understanding and no judgement.” Events like Mental Health Week and R U OK Day bring the issues around Mental Health to the fore, but Rev Hollis says there is a right and wrong way to approach talking about it. “It’s good to avoid giving advice and instead

ask open ended questions, ask them what it is like, what can you do to help, do you want to talk about it?“ she said. “People need to know and understand that they don’t have to talk, just listen, and not be afraid of silence,” she said. If you or someone you know if struggling with mental health issues, contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.

A bright future with VFA Learning VFA Learning have built a strong reputation in Narre Warren based on delivering first class training, learning outcomes and integrity making them the provider of choice with many local secondary colleges and education seekers, Career Consultant Jeremy Riley said. He said VFA Learning is a local training organisation that specialises in delivering vocational education courses in fitness and sport, massage therapy and early childhood education and care. “We offer Certificate III courses as a schoolbased apprenticeship (SBAT) in Allied Health, Education Support, Aquatics and Community Recreation and Early Childhood Education and Care to students completing Year 11/12,” he said. “Our Diploma courses in Early Childhood Education and Care, Massage Therapy and Sport Development, which includes foundations and Certificate IV in Fitness, are available to school leavers and general public that want to start a rewarding career in these industries. “VFA have established pathways to Deakin and Federation universities for Diploma Graduates that would like to enter a degree qualification in Sport and Exercise Science, Early Childhood Education and Care, Education (Primary) and Arts with Deakin Uni or Health Science or Sports Management with Federation Uni.” Jeremy said VFA offered a unique education pathway that allowed students to study locally, gain on the job experience and achieve a qualification that allowed them to start their career in health, sport or education and also gave them access to higher education if they wanted to complete a degree. “There is a lot of pressure placed on VCE students finishing Year 12 to get a great ATAR for direct entry into university,” he said. “But VFA believe that by studying at diploma level prior to university, students will gain much more industry experience, earn more money and

Ryan watching over students. 159192 have more opportunities than a student that goes straight to university from secondary school and works in a different industry whilst studying. “VFA’s delivery method flips traditional classroom learning with a strong practical application focus and a blend of online learning resources to give students more flexibility in their timetable. “With government funding available and di-

rect entry application, getting started is as simple as registering.” He said anyone interested in a career in the fields mentioned or a pathway to university should register to attend the open day on 15 October to learn more about starting a rewarding career - right there at VFA Learning in Narre Warren.

VFA Learning will celebrate 20 years in 2017. Starting in Geelong in 1997 they have grown to have three campuses in Victoria, opening purpose-built facilities in Narre Warren in 2010 and Essendon Fields in 2002. VFA Learning can be found at 58 Victor Crescent, Narre Warren, phone 8794 6000 or email jeremyr@vfalearning.vic.edu.au.

Helping hands changing lives The hands are supplied in kits of 10 priced at $4000 and it takes two people two hours to put them together. Each hand is sent to its recipient with the name of the people who assembled it and the sponsor. “We are now getting emails from some of the victims who have some of our hands fitted, telling us what a difference it will make to their lives,” Mr Cantwell said. Ny Khom, a 59-year-old Cambodian rice farmer with a wife and six children, travelled 68km to receive his new hands and sent his thanks. Another recipient was Cambodian girl Phov, who lives with her nine-year-old sister and grandmother. Her hand-written thank-you note says “thx you for your donation” followed by a love heart. “Grandma is a rice farmer so the girls can go to school,” the note goes on. “Grandma thanks for the hand which will help Phov.” Call Mr Cantwell on 0400 306 311 to support the project or for information about joining Rotary.

Dandenong students are giving six people a lifechanging hand. Dandenong High School raised more than $2800 for Rotary Club of Dandenong’s Building Hands for Landmine Victims project. The cash bought six prosthetic hands, which Rotarians helped VCAL students to assemble at the school on Tuesday 4 October. Rotarian Don Cantwell said the club had now provided 40 hands thanks to sponsorship from businesses and community groups, and that Doveton College had also contributed one hand. “There are estimated to be 384,000 people who have lost one or both hands to landmines and these are mostly children,” he said. “There are 120 million landmines still set in the world, mostly in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, and there are being cleared at a rate of only 100,000 per year. “At this rate it will take 1200 years to clear all the mines! “If you lose your hands you lose your independence. “By fitting these hands, although not perfect, we restore some independence and hope.”

MEDICALLY SPEAKING

Pastoral practitioner Josie Malone.

Support for patients and caregivers aim is to offer open-minded, attentive conversations and provide support according to the patient’s belief system. The team is skilled at providing resources for spiritual and emotional wellbeing, meditation and relaxation, and offering music and rituals to mark significant events as required. Illness, birth, injury and surgery are physical experiences but can cause emotional turbulence and spiritual questioning. Will I be OK? Why is this suffering happening to me? How will my family manage? What am I living for? Where can I find hope? Just as it is crucial is to tend to the patient’s physical needs so the patient’s emotional and spiritual concerns are equally important and valued by the hospital through provision of the pastoral care service. At St John of God Berwick Hospital, Pastoral Services is available for all patients, families, visitors and caregivers. Pastoral Services is a highly valued service offered at St John of God Berwick Hospital. During Pastoral Services Week of 16-22 October the hospital is aiming to raise awareness of this incredible source of support at the hospital and clear up exactly what Pastoral Services is. It is not uncommon when in hospital to feel worried or anxious. Pastoral Services can help address patients’ concerns such as their current or future health, their family and loved ones, their home situation, death and dying, faith and spirituality, among other issues. Pastoral Services is different to counselling and social work because it focuses on being a listening, attentive and compassionate presence, walking with patients on their journey. This may involve specific religious needs or general emotional/spiritual support. Counselling sessions tend to be in a regular sequence for in-depth discussion of specific issues. Social workers also address social and practical support issues, assisting people to access available services. Pastoral Services is not all about religion. The

Our doctors are fully trained and experienced in the technique of dermoscopy and dermal imaging. If skin cancer is diagnosed our doctors can offer treatment at the clinic in over 90% of cases using surgery under local anaesthetic or prescription anti-cancer creams. Our aim is to diagnose skin cancers early when they are least likely to cause a serious problem. Dr Bansal also offers treatment for cosmetic removal of moles, cysts and lipomas. Consultations are available immediately. NO REFERRAL FROM A GP IS NECESSARY Ph: (03) 9769 3358 to make an appointment 29 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 17 October, 2016

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Laundry set to clean up

Industry has its say on crossing

By Casey Neill

An industry forum will help to shape the new Abbotts Road rail bridge. The Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA) invited local business representatives and landowners, residents, commuters and employees from the Dandenong South area to help it prepare for construction and delivery of the project. It’s seeking feedback on potential designs and construction impacts. The forum will run from noon to 2pm on Friday 21 October at Punthill, 157-163 Lonsdale Street, Dandenong. The Journal reported on 23 September that there would be a rail bridge over Abbotts Road from 2019. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced that construction would start next year. She said the solution followed extensive consultation on a range of options with local business owners and operators, commuters and landowners. More than 23,000 vehicles use the intersection every day. A train derailed after hitting a truck at the intersection in 2012, resulting in one death and several serious injuries. The incident followed another death at the intersection five years earlier. The State Government announced last November that the crossing would be gone by 2019. In February this year, the Journal reported that businesses were fuming over plans to cut Abbotts Road in half at the railway crossing - to instead build the Remington Drive overpass. The Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA) did not initially put forward any other plans. But Ms Williams said there were always other options on the table, and two weeks later the LXRA released four additional prospective projects for public consultation. On 23 May Ms Williams announced that the option had been taken off the table.

A laundry, a farm machinery manufacturer and an electronics recycler were the final three nominees for the new Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards. President Paul Broom applauded the Cabrini Linen Service, Hugh Murray and Sons and Quantum Recycling Solutions at the final chamber breakfast for the year at Greyhounds Entertainment in Springvale on Wednesday 12 October. “From here we go onto our gala night to celebrate and acknowledge our winners,” he said. That evening will take place on Wednesday 30 November. Cabrini Linen Service (CLS) managing director Ralf Pelz said the not-for-profit provided specialist linen and laundry services to Victorian healthcare, aged care and hospitality industries. “We originally started our business in Melbourne in the basement of Cabrini Hospital,” he said. The business moved to East Hawthorn but outgrew the space. It relocated to Dandenong South three years ago with a mission to help the area’s high unemployment, at-risk youths and new migrants. “I’m happy for people to work with us for a short time and move on to bigger and better pastures,” Mr Pelz said. It’s more than doubled its turnover since the move, now handles 200 tonnes of linen each week and employs more than 130 people. “We’ve gone from strength to strength,” Mr Pelz said. “There’s certainly room for more growth for us.” Hugh Murray and Sons operations manager Adrian Norton-Jones said Hugh Murray started the company in Buln Buln in 1903.

Quantum Recycling Solutions managing director Lokesh Baskaran, Cabrini Linen Service managing director Ralf Pelz, and Murray Agricultural Equipment's Jonathan Taylor and Adrian Norton-Jones. “We moved from Buln Buln because demand for the harrows grew exponentially from word of mouth,” he said. Dandenong was on the rail line, enabling transport into New South Wales, and the manufacturer has been in the suburb since 1915. The company specialises in harrows. “We make one thing and we make it well,” Mr Norton-Jones said. “A lot of the Chinese imports, the farmers will think they’re getting a good deal. “But they drag it round the paddock and there’s only half left.” Managing director Lokesh Baskaran estab-

lished Quantum Recycling Solutions in Dandenong in March last year. The company has close associations with councils, education facilities and other large corporates. On average Quantum works through 12 tonnes per week and as much as 26 tonnes during peak periods. Fifty-three per cent of end products are exported to China, Japan, Korea and Hong Kong. “We’re already looking for a move next year. We’re looking for a bigger place,” he said. “We don’t want to get out of Dandenong.”

Study star juggles his duties and manages an awar

Online links prove critical

By Casey Neill Dandenong North’s Kyle Hillbrich is juggling caring for his dad with studies and part-time work - and he’s only 16. Chisholm Institute teacher Janis Mitchell announced her “lovely ex-student” as the Youth Enterprise Award nominee at the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Awards breakfast in Springvale on Wednesday 12 October. She first met Kyle in September last year in her foundation VCAL class. “He got through a 20-week course in 10 weeks,” she said. “Kyle did exactly the same thing with certificate two in general education. He slowed down in certificate three because he got a part-time job.” Kyle had applied for dozens of jobs with no luck but after help from Chisholm to write a resume and cover letter, he applied for a job at Hollier Dicksons in Dandenong South. “Twenty minutes after I applied for that job I got a call asking when could I start,” he said. Ms Mitchell said Kyle had a lot of domestic responsibilities on top of study and work as he was the carer for his dad. “He has got his learner’s so he can drive his dad to appointments in his own car, which he has saved up for,” she said. Kyle will start VCE next year and plans to study early childhood education. “In six years hopefully I’ll be in a school teaching Grade 3s,” he said. “Teachers helped me to get where I am. “Apparently in England they’ve got a fair few jobs for male teachers so, hopefully, I can travel.”

Engine works a gem of an opportunity for apprentices Up to 10 apprenticeships are up for grabs with Dandenong award-winner HM Gem Engines. The company is Australia’s largest re-manufacturer of automotive, heavy diesel and industrial engines and cylinder heads. HM Gem services automotive, heavy diesel, transport, industrial and marine clients throughout Australia. Applications are open for up to 10 apprenticeships next year. They’ll receive engineering training on a broad 30 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 17 October, 2016

range of engines and components. HM Gem general manager Dean Taylor said he’d prefer applicants to have a Year 12 certificate and “a passion for engineering perfection”. Mr Taylor has been with the company for 20 years after starting as an apprentice automotive machinist and fitter and turner. “Like most young guys I was interested in engines and cars,” he said. HM Gem started in a small garage in 1969 and has taken on about 460 apprentices over the years.

The company has received the Prime Minister’s Employer of the Year award four times and was acknowledged as the Best Engine Reconditioner in this year’s VACC Awards to Industry. Founder Bruce Parker was inducted into the Greater Dandenong Hall of Fame at the Premier Regional Business Awards in April. HM GEM Engines also made the top four in the guest-voted Premier Regional Business Award.

“People are using the internet to get their first impression of you.” Nathanial Bibby also told the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce breakfast on Wednesday 12 October that the “digital disruption” already affecting most businesses would continue until 2050. The guest speaker asked attendees at Springvale’s Greyhounds Entertainment for a show of hands from those who used LinkedIn, and found 95 per cent had a presence on the social media tool. They’re among 7.5 million users in Australia and 450 million world-wide. Mr Bibby said their LinkedIn page should be their personal website, they should put keywords in their headline, and recommendations helped a profile to stand out. He urged LinkedIn users to join relevant groups to find new contacts and said there was “no harm” in accepting connection requests from people they didn’t know. “Would you be selective about who can visit your website?” he said. Mr Bibby suggested using the advanced search feature, and sending personalised connection requests and follow-up messages. He said that on average, 50 per cent accepted the request and 10 to 20 per cent replied to the follow-up, and compared that to a 1 per cent average return on cold calls. Mr Bibby urged people to avoid explaining what they did in the message. “You can’t push information on people,” he said. And he said they should talk about what they can do for the person they’re writing to, not vice-versa.

Cricket coup snares batting star By Nick Creely Buckley Ridges has pulled off a major recruiting coup by signing former Australian and Victorian batsman David Hussey for the DDCA T20 tournament. The 39-year-old is the current captain of the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League, boasting an immense record that has taken him all over the globe. In a first-class record lasting 15 years, Hussey represented Australia in 69 ODIs and 39 T20Is, and has made an international century. The all-rounders most famous knock was a mind-boggling 88 not out off 44 balls against South Africa in 2009 in a pace-attack featuring the legendary Dale Steyn and pace duo Albie Morkel and Wayne Parnell. Hussey is one of the most distinguished T20 players in the history of the game, and has played more than 250 matches in this format in a range of competitions such as the IPL, English T20 and BBL. The man known as Huss will now take his game to Pultney Street where he is expected to play a major part in Buckley’s pursuit of the T20 title. DDCA Secretary Ray Nicholls said that the signing of Hussey is going to do wonders for the T20 competition. “It’s going to be exciting for our local competition. “Huss won’t muck around, I wouldn’t have thought.

“We actually had Dave as our speaker at last year’s Alan Wookey Medal Night and he was quite well received. “Buckley Ridges have had some massive signings this year and Dave just adds star-power to that. “I’m sure that alone will attract a lot of people to the games – and they actually play Springvale South first up so I hope Hussey is available because it’s going to be exciting,” Cooper said. In other DDCA recruiting news, Dandenong opening batsman Brett Forsyth will also once again play with Springvale South in this year’s T20 competition as its marquee player. Springvale South will be looking for a threepeat in the Twenty20 competition, after winning the title for the last two years. The 27-year-old opening batsman, who is a former junior player at Springvale South, as well as a Victorian second XI representative, is a massive signing for the Bloods, and will ensure they remain the heavy favourites to win it again. Forsyth has played 19 Twenty20 games as the Blood’s marquee signing, averaging 59.35 since first featuring in the competition in 2011/12. Forsyth has played 139 games for Dandenong in the Victorian Premier competition, amassing 11 centuries, including a brilliant 100 not-out during the 2008/09 T20 series semi-final. During the champion batsman’s junior days, he won a club champion award with the Bloods. Springvale South secretary Tony Cooper is ex-

cited by the prospect of the star batsman returning to the club. “Brett brings great experience and leadership for our developing players. “His class with the bat is a key reason that we have had success in this format. “We expect to again be hard to beat with Brett’s leadership,” Cooper said. Narre South has also signed Casey-South Melbourne captain Lachlan Sperling as its marquee player this year. The middle-order batsman, who is a clean striker of the ball, will be available for every match this T20 tournament. The Annual DDCA Twenty20 competition is set to kick off on 19 October, with 20 clubs across four divisions set to battle it out. Other clubs participating in this year’s competition are busy behind the scenes, looking for marquee players to sign and draw big crowds. There is speculation that Bradley Hodge, who has played in the tournament before, may feature at a club at some stage in this year’s T20 series, while there is another rumour that a former West Indian cricketer may take part. Prize money in this year’s competition will be $2000, which includes $1000 for the winner, $600 for the runners-up and $200 for third and fourth. Participating teams: · Beaconsfield · Berwick · Buckley Ridges

· Cranbourne · Dandenong West · Dingley · Fountain Gate · Hallam Kalora Park · Heinz Southern Districts · Lynbrook · Mordialloc · Narre North · Narre South · Narre Warren · North Dandenong · Parkfield · Silverton · Springvale South · Springvale · St Mary’s Round 1 fixture, 19 October: · Narre North v Berwick, Narre Warren North Reserve 1 · Cranbourne v Dandenong West, Casey Fields 2 · St Mary’s v Narre South, Carroll Reserve 2 · Narre Warren v Mordialloc, Sweeney Reserve · Springvale v North Dandenong, Springvale Reserve · Hallam Kalora Park v Beaconsfield, Hallam Rec Reserve · Buckley Ridges v Springvale South, Park Oval · Fountain Gate v Dingley, Max Pawsey Reserve

Overseas development tour helps young cricketers hone their skills By Nicholas Creely Sri Lanka is a country full of tropical beaches, stunning natural wonders and thousands of years of cultural heritage. But it's also a place thriving with picturesque and state-of-the art cricket grounds and has been a place that professional cricketers love playing at. A development tour is now being organised to provide the opportunity for any young aspiring cricketer under the age of 18 to travel to Sri Lanka and experience the island paradise. There was an information night held at Shepley Oval last Tuesday in which organizers answered any questions or concerns regarding the tour.

The tour, which will run from 29 March to 13 April 2017 will combine both cricket and culture in a unique and exciting way. The Sri Lankan experience will include return airfares, accommodation, transportation by airconditioned bus, an opportunity to play on worldclass cricket venues, daily breakfast and dinners, sightseeing tours, travel and playing shirts, tour photographs plus other experiences. Dandenong Cricket Club admin manager Elizabeth Williamson said the tour is a great opportunity for aspiring cricketers to gain valuable cultural and cricket experiences. “We're looking at taking a group of 12 players 18 years and under and they will play approximately six to eight on international and

college grounds. They will get a taste of where the test cricketers play in Kandy, Colombo and Galle,” Williamson said. Adding to the fantastic opportunity to play in some of the world’s best cricketing venues, the tour squad will also spend time volunteering in some tsunami struck zones. “We hope to arrange a day of volunteering at the Foundation of Goodness, and that's situated down in Galle where a lot of the tsunami victims are. “Basically, it’s a cricket and cultural experience tour as well, and will be very rewarding for the individuals lucky enough to go,” Williamson said. The Foundation of Goodness is a not-for-profit organisation set up in 1999 and provides essen-

tial services to the ancestral village of Seenigama, Galle. Sri Lankan cricket legend Kumar Sangakarra is a major part of the organisation. Williamson also said that interest is growing and individuals or parents who want to be involved act quickly or risk missing out. “The close-off day is probably around two weeks after the information night of 11 October, so by 25 October we'd like to have final numbers,” Williamson said. “They can contact either Keith Jansz on 0403 159 502 or myself on 0409 184 277 to get further information in that time.” 37 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 17 October, 2016

First class spinner in the mix for coming season By Nicholas Creely Dandenong UK import Callum Parkinson is set for a big season at the Premier club, and is excited about the prospects for the season ahead. The talented 19-year-old left arm spinner is the major signing for Dandenong this season having made his first-class debut for Derbyshire in last season’s County Championship. Highly rated back in the UK, Parkinson featured in four matches for Derbyshire, taking 14 wickets at 37.92, with a solid 4/90 and 48 not-out in his debut match. “It was a big surprise, really, I wasn’t really expecting to break into the first team in Derby but I went really well and luckily played a few games towards the end of the season which was really good for my experience and development,” Parkinson said. “It’s a massive step up obviously from the county second’s team, but I took everything in my stride and will keep learning. But the young star is back in Australia for the summer of cricket, and can’t be any happier. “I landed on the 26 September, actually, and it’s good to be back here. “I played at Mount Waverly last year and we won the subbies flag so I had a good time last year – it was good. Parkinson, who the Panthers will be hoping can help lift the club back into the First XI finals mix, believes the standard of cricket in Victoria is as good as anything he has experienced back home. “The standard is very high and there is just such a difference to back home. “The training also is very intense and there are a lot of blokes down on a Tuesday and Thursday night competing for places in the top side, which is obviously very healthy at clubs. “But what I’ve also noticed is the depth of the teams; blokes that are coming in at 8, 9 and 10 are of a good standard and that’s really healthy. “The grounds are definitely a lot bigger over here as well – as a spinner it can be tricky bowling on smaller grounds at home but over here it works to my advantage that the grounds are big,” Parkinson said. “In terms of the wicket, they are actually quite similar, and when I got here last year I assumed the pitches would be rock hard, bouncy and fast, but they’re not too dissimilar to back home.” Parkinson is known as a spinner with excellent control, turn and bounce, but views in-game battles as his biggest strength. “I’m a very competitive cricketer and I like to be in a battle with the opposition, as well as being aggressive in what I do and not try and focus on what they’re doing, really. Speaking on the Panthers season so far heading into round five, Parkinson is confident the group has what it takes. “I think as a group we’re really confident of doing well in all grades. “The first XI, there are at least 15 or 16 guys competing for a place in the team and there’s a good blend of experienced guys like Forsyth and Butterfield, and guys like myself and Edwards,

Warm-up for Spain circuit By Nicholas Creely BRDC rising star Thomas Randle enjoyed a two-day test driving a Comtec Racing Formula V8 3.5 at Spain’s Curcuit de Valencia last week. Randle, from Narre Warren North, drove the car in preparation for his debut in the high-speed open wheel championship, which will commence on the weekend of 28-30 October at Jerez Circuit. During the course of the two-day test, Randle completed more than 100 laps, performed practice starts and completed pit stop simulations, lapping the 4.070k circuit over six seconds faster than he did while driving a FIA European Formula Three car at the same venue last year.

easily the fastest “andIt isbest race car I have ever driven. ”

Young left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson is crucial for the Panthers this season. Picture: Leicestershire website who made 70 on the weekend, are just coming into the system. “We’re all quite excited to see how far we can go this year,” Parkinson said. The Englishman also heaped praise on new coach Nick Speak, highlighting is ability to relate to the group as a major positive. “Nick Speak is just brilliant – he’s just so laid

back, but such a great sounding board and he offers some great advice to me and the guys and I think everyone is just enjoying what he has brought. “He’s a really good leader and he’s going to take the club forward which will be really good. Dandenong will host Greenvale Kangaroos at Shepley Oval this Saturday from 11am.

Randle said the experience of driving the car was invaluable, and believes he is primed to perform at the Jerez Circuit later in the month. “Driving the car was just phenomenal and the power was incredible, it just keeps on accelerating. “It was very similar to the feeling I got from the SAAB sports sedan, as my head was getting lifted up from the wind I was going that fast; around 280km/h on the approach to turn one. “The grip on new tyres was unbelievable and I was reaching 215km/h minimum speed through the first corner which felt incredible, and pulling almost three Gs laterally. “I did take some time getting used to how quickly I could apply the throttle and had a few wheel-spin moments here and there. “The main thing I worked on was trying to slow everything down in my brain when everything was actually happening so quickly. “The carbon brakes were another area I had to get used to as the first two laps you have virtually no brakes at all until they warm up, but once they have heat in them they’re very aggressive and the braking distances very short. “It was great to be back at Valencia, a track which I already have the knowledge of, and I was running six seconds a lap faster than the times I did in there in Formula Three. “I feel very fortunate to have been given this amazing opportunity by Comtec Racing. “It is easily the fastest and best race car I have ever driven with cornering speeds way in excess of anything I’ve ever experienced. “I’m really looking forward to Jerez and hoping to continue learning more and more about the car and its capabilities, and also establishing just how close we really are to the pace of the competition,” Randle said.

Lisa recognised for stepping up to keep club ticking By Nicholas Creely HSBC and the Australian Rugby Union have announced the finalists for the 2016 HSBC Volunteer of the Year, and Endeavour Hills Rugby Club’s very own Lisa Campbell is one of them. With more than 400 entries overall, Lisa has made it down to the last five with her impressive work as a hard-working volunteer at her club this season not going unnoticed. The award aims to recognise those individuals who volunteer their time and make a significant contribution to community rugby across Australia. Lisa has been heavily involved with the Endeavour Hills Rugby Club since moving from New Zealand four years ago. Over the past four years, Lisa has served on the committee, helping the struggling club in a variety of time-consuming jobs. She has served in roles such as Director of 38 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 17 October, 2016

Juniors, Junior Registrar, Team Manager of the Under 10 and Under 18 teams, communications, organiser of various fundraisers, merchandise as well as facilitating a pre-season skills and drills program for the club’s junior players. Adding to this, Lisa has served numerous other roles which were not able to be filled by the club. Lisa is at the club for up to five days a week and balancing work and family life at the same time. Her passion about the growth and development of rugby in Victoria has seen her reach great heights at the club. CEO of HSBC Australia Tony Cripps paid tribute to the hard-working volunteers, citing their utmost importance in rugby thriving at grassroots level. “Volunteers are vital to the success of rugby clubs across Australia. “HSBC is proud to recognise those who give so much to the game and keep rugby thriving

at its grassroots. “Congratulations to all the finalists of this year’s Volunteer of the Year awards,” Cripps said. This was echoed by ARU General Manager of Community Rugby and Strategy Andrew Larratt who acknowledged just how valued volunteers are in Australia. “The finalists represent thousands of rugby volunteers in this country who are passionate about our game and the benefits it holds for young boys and girls,” Larratt said. “We were delighted to see so many nominations come in this year from all across the country as we know each nominee makes such a difference to rugby in Australia.” The finalists chosen will attend the John Eales Medal night on 27 October 2017 where the winners will be announced. If Lisa wins the award, she will receive a grant of $10,000 to improve the facilities and services of her registered club, Endeavour Hill Rugby Club.

Lisa Campbell is down to the last five in the HSBC Volunteer of the Year.

Talent bubbles up for selection By Russell Bennett They’ve come from all walks of sporting life to join as one – the first crop of players to stride out onto the field in the AFL Women’s competition. The south-east has long been known as a footy hotbed and Wednesday’s inaugural women’s draft only provided more proof of that with 11 players from the south-east selected. Cranbourne was the big winner with seven of its players finding homes in the AFL while Keysborough’s Jaimee Lambert and former Dandenong WNBL player Alison Downie will also be playing footy on the big stage next year. Lambert was selected with the fifth overall pick in the draft and the first for the Western Bulldogs. She won the Susan Alberti award recently for her performance in this year’s AFL Women’s Exhibition Series and was one of 19 players added to the Bulldogs’ list for the inaugural AFLW season. Speaking to the Western Bulldogs’ website, Lambert said it was a dream come true to be drafted to the Whitten Oval. “I couldn’t be happier than to be at the Bulldogs,” she said. Bulldogs coach Paul Groves said it wasn’t just the 22-year-old’s toughness that made her stand out from the pack. “In the all-star game she had nine or 10 tackles but she’s got tricks, she can take a hanger and loves to kick a goal as well so I think we’ve drafted the complete package,” he said. Downie, meanwhile, was selected by the Blues with the 129th overall selection. She is from Diamond Creek and has been playing top-flight football for the past five years.

She was also a VFL Women’s Team of the Year selection in the ruck and all of this is made even more remarkable by the fact that the 32-year-old is also a 326-game veteran of the Dandenong Rangers in the WNBL. Meanwhile, Cranbourne VWFL coach Kris Smith could hardly contain his excitement, telling the Journal soon after seven of his players were drafted: “Anything is possible – that’s the attitude we have to instil into these girls. One big year, and anything is possible for them.” The draft started with a bang with Eagles alum Bianca Jakobsson taken with the third overall pick by Carlton. She was later followed into the new competition by former Eagles team mates Kirsten McLeod (pick 28), Danielle Hardiman (35), Hayley Wildes (44), Breann Moody (67), Courtney Clarkson (124) and Jas Grierson (135). “She had her heart set on either Carlton or the Bulldogs so for her to get to Carlton – she was rapt,” Smith said of lifelong Blues fan Jakobsson. “I call her the ultimate professional – she does all the work, and more. “I get to training and she’s been there half an hour before me running laps. “She’ll stick around after training and have shots at goal if she’s got time. “She’s a really hard worker, she’s a great kid, and I said at presentation night she’ll be a future leader of a club. “She’s that excited about it and I know she’ll definitely go really well. “She’ll be able to run up and down those wings and just kill her opponents like she does at VFL level.” Endeavour Hills local Ellie Blackburn is now one of the faces of the AFL after her marquee signing with the Western Bulldogs last week.
