“Many of the teachers’ resources were lost when the tree destroyed the main building. “These are items that insurance will not likely cover.” She said the festival represented the perfect opportunity for the community to help the school get back on its feet. “We’re not asking for donations, but we’re just saying come down and support our festival,” she said. “It’s always an amazing day, but it’s now more important than ever to show support. “The hills is a strong community and will get around the school, it’s just important that we get the word out.” The Menzies Creek Primary School Family Festival will be held on Saturday, 22 October, from 2pm, at the school grounds.

Meanwhile, a parent of three Menzies Creek Primary School students has urged the community to support the storm-damaged school’s Family Festival on Saturday, 22 October. During the storm, a large tree fell and crushed one of the buildings and a playground, causing major damage. Mother Donna Arancibia has three children at the school – Heath, 12, Jocelyn, 10, and Fraser, 8. Incredibly, Ms Arancibia said portable buildings had already arrived at the school and there had been much work behind the scenes to ensure classes could continue. Although she said there were many items that couldn’t be easily replaced. “The sensory garden and totem poles, which the children painted, are now gone,” she said.

MORE than 500 homes in Monbulk are still without power, more than one week after the violent storm that saw winds of up to 120km/h lash the region. According to the AusNet Services Outage Tracker, of the 647 homes still without power across Victoria – as of Monday, 17 October – most were in the Dandenong Ranges, with 21 homes still listed as awaiting connection in the Emerald to Cockatoo area. Though it’s a far cry from the tens of thousands of households originally affected, with 2200 customers remaining off-supply in the Yarra Ranges last Thursday, 13 October. Some estimates are that more than 1000 buildings were damaged, while more than 2000 trees were blown down. AusNet Services has apologised to those still without power, but insisted they were working diligently in rectifying the situation, after what they described as the most damaging storm to hit their network in more than eight years. In the wake of the devastation, Minister for Justice, Michael Keenan, and Victorian Minister for Emergency Services, James Merlino, on Sunday, 16 October, announced the activation of additional disaster assistance for Victorians affected by storms in the Yarra Ranges Council area. Minister Keenan said assistance was being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State ‘Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangement’ (NDRRA). Mr Merlino said that emergency reestablishment grants were now being made available to eligible households, in addition to the emergency relief assistance payments which are available to all storm-affected communities. “These grants provide assistance to people whose homes have been damaged so that they can clean-up their properties and replace damaged contents,” Mr Merlino said.

Storm help for citizens By Peter Douglas WITH many residents in the Yarra Ranges still enduring power outages and the effects of storm damage, Yarra Ranges Council is encouraging citizens to make use of available assistance. Winds of up to 120km/h lashed the region on Sunday, 9 October, causing major damage and destruction throughout the region. According to council, its trees crew has received around 500 tree-related calls from Yarra Ranges residents since Sunday, requiring their support to clean up and remove fallen trees on roads and inspect trees that might be dangerous. They have received reports of 36 homes that have suffered significant damage due to fallen trees. According to council, when reports come in, properties are inspected and residents are referred to DHHS for hardship assistance. An Emergency Relief Centre (ERC) was established on Sunday evening at 9pm for residents who may have required temporary accommodation because of damage to their homes. The ERC was closed at midnight due to lack of demand, which indicated that residents may have been able to access shelter through family and friends. Council is currently co-ordinating relief and recovery efforts with other community agencies to provide support for impacted residents, including accommodation options, shower and laundry access, links to emergency food providers and information regarding food and water safety, food disposal and septic tank management. Yarra Ranges Council has prepared the following fact sheet for those still affected: Where can I go if I need accommodation tonight? If your house suffered major damage and has been deemed uninhabitable, contact council and you will be referred to an appropriate service provider. My power is still out. Is there somewhere I can access hot
showers and laundry facilities? Council has made contact with the following businesses to arrange access to showers and laundry facilities (at some locations only). Please note you will need to report to the office and BYO towels and soap for each facility. Gold coins will also be required to operate laundry machines. Belgrave Heights Convention Centre: 3 Convention Avenue, Belgrave Heights (9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday); Badger Creek Big 4 Caravan Park: 417 Don Road, Badger Creek; Brittania Ridge Caravan Park: 160 Tarrango Road, Yarra Junction; Doon Reserve Caravan Park: 200 Doon Road, Yarra Junction (7am10am and 4pm-7pm. Please call in advance. Laundry facilities are not currently available); Healesville Caravan Park: 322 Don Road, Healesville (1pm-4pm); Lilydale Caravan Park: 105 Warburton Highway, Lilydale ($5.50 fee); and Warburton Caravan Park: 30 Woods Point Road, Warburton (9am-6pm). Can I access any financial assistance? Please contact council’s Municipal Recovery Manager (MRM), who will put you in touch with a relevant agency for further advice or assistance. Where can I access counselling and/or personal support for myself or my family? Red Cross and other agencies can assist with numerous services. Please contact council on 1300 368 333, who can connect you with the appropriate agency. My house has suffered major structural damage and I don’t know if it is safe to enter - who do I need to contact? Contact your insurer and council If your house has suffered major structural damage, council will complete a building assessment and provide advice on whether your house is habitable. For all council-related inquiries, phone Yarra Ranges Council on 1300 368 333.

My house has suffered a major structural damage and I don’t know if it is safe to enter - who do I need to contact? Contact your insurer and council. If your house has suffered major structural damage, council will complete a building assessment and provide advice on whether your house is habitable. For all council-related inquiries, phone Yarra Ranges Council on 1300 368 333. How do I dispose of food safely during a power outage? Food safety is an important consideration during power outages. Some pockets of the Yarra Ranges may not have power restored until the end of the week. There are basic precautions to take to make sure food remains as safe as possible. If you have meat that’s defrosted and unsafe to eat, please keep it inside your freezer and place in your bin on the day before collection day. Be careful when using portable generators and alternative power supply options. Generators should never be used indoors. This information applies to residents and business owners. Food waste and collection: Yarra Ranges Council recommends you talk to your neighbours to ask if they have any spare bin space in the lead-up to collection day. Please fill your bins to their maximum capacity but do not allow them to overflow. Overflowing bins containing food or bags of food waste piled up beside the bin will attract vermin and animals. What should I do with food waste until my weekly collection day? Move food from the fridge to the freezer; Place bagged ice under the food packages and trays stored in freezers and fridges (where possible); and Only open the fridge and freezer doors when absolutely necessary to keep the air cooler for longer.

A tree had fallen on Belgrave-Gembrook Road in Menzies Creek. 160437 PICTURE: JODIE SYMONDS Food advice for the home: The most important thing is to try to keep cold and frozen food cold. If food is still cold to touch (less than 5C), it is safe to use. Before and after a power failure: Once cold or frozen food is no longer cold to touch, it can be kept and eaten for up to four hours and then it must be thrown away; If it is raw meat, it should be cooked and eaten; Eat hot food within four hours of it being heated; and If power is restored when frozen food is still frozen solid, the food is safe. Can I drink the tank water if my power is still out? The quality of your tank water may be compromised if your pump has not been working due to the power outage. Bottled water may be your best option in the meantime. For concerns regarding the safety of your tank water, please contact council's public health officers on 1300 368 333. Wastewater and septic systems: If you rely on power for your septic system to function, and your property is without power, the sys-

tem may be affected. Sewage contains harmful bacteria and viruses, and diseases can be transmitted if appropriate measures are not taken. Indications that your septic system may require attention include: A pungent odour around the tank and land application area; Blocked fixtures and wastewater overflowing from the relief point; High sludge levels within the primary tank; and Sewage flowing up through the toilet and sinks. If your tank is full or overflowing, contact your service agent and/or licenced septic tank clearing service. If your tank or effluent lines are damaged, contact a licensed plumber or drainer for emergency works. For general advice or inquiries around septic systems, contact Council's Health Service on 1300 368 333. Are there places to go to charge my mobile phone and other devices? Yes. Council's Community Links in Lilydale, Monbulk, Upwey, Yarra Junction and Healesville are available for residents who need to charge their mobile devices.

Tech school is underway By Peter Douglas WORK on the new Yarra Ranges Tech School began in earnest on Friday, 14 October. Minister for Education, James Merlino, and Member for Eastern Victoria, Daniel Mulino, visited the location of the new school, Box Hill Institute’s Lilydale Lakeside campus, to mark the start of construction. The launch represents another step towards the region’s students gaining access to a high-tech innovation hub. Once complete, students from 18 local secondary schools will learn science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects at the school, while the locations will house a high-tech robotics lab, virtual reality rooms and fabrication labs. The school’s focus will be on precision manufacturing, medical robotics, sustainability and renewables, bio-technology, food and fibre. The aim is to equip students with the skills they need for high-tech jobs, both today and into the future. Mr Merlino said this would represent great opportunity for students. “A tech school is not a traditional school - it’s a shared campus for local secondary schools that is equipped with leading-edge technology to provide students a new type of learning environment as part of their
Education Minister, James Merlino. 152531 enrolment at their local secondary school,” he said. The campus has strong ties to industry and employers, giving students crucial insight into employ-
ment skills and pathways into education, training and employment. Classes will be delivered in partnership with Deakin University and William Angliss Institute, with work
expected to be completed by January next year. For more information on tech schools, visit www.techschools.education.vic.gov.au.
Avoid fine by voting VOTERS in the Yarra Ranges Shire Council elections are reminded they have until 6pm this Friday to return their completed ballot paper and avoid a fine. The Victorian Electoral Commission is reminding voters that ballots that are not posted or hand-delivered to the election office by this time cannot be counted. Completed ballot material must be posted by 6pm this Friday. Alternatively, it can be hand-delivered to the election office during business hours at Healesville Community Link, 110 River Street, Healesville. Extended hours apply from 9am to 8pm on Thursday 20 October, and 9am to 6pm on Friday 21 October. Voters who still haven’t received their ballot pack should call the election office immediately on 1300 589 389 to arrange a replacement. Voting is compulsory for voters who were on the Victorian roll for this election at 4pm on Friday 26 August 2016; state-enrolled voters who don’t vote may be fined. Voters aged 70 or over and council-enrolled voters are encouraged to vote but will not be fined if they don’t. Voters enrolled in Melba Ward are not required to vote because this ward is uncontested. An uncontested election leaflet was mailed to affected voters.

Det Sen Const Gommers said that police believed the man had a number of co-offenders, and warned residents to be wary of men in fluorescent work tops acting suspiciously. He said a number of overnight and early morning burglaries were also being carried out in Kallista and Belgrave, and asked residents to note any suspicious behaviour. ON TUESDAY, 25 October, 1938, an Australian National Airways Douglas DC-2 airplane crashed into the Dandenong Ranges, killing all 18 passengers and crew. A memorial will be held on Tuesday, 25 October at 6.30, for a 7am start, at the memorial site on 9 Eyrie Road, off Ridge Road in Mt Dandenong. Organised by the Lilydale Squadron of the Australian Air League, the memorial marks 78 years since the horrific crash. The tragedy led to the establishment of radio beams and air traffic control, and the formation of a Department of Civil Aviation. The Kyeema airplane was flying from Adelaide to Essendon Airport in Melbourne, when heavy fog caused the aircraft to crash into the western slopes of Mount Dandenong. The heavy cloud layer meant the flight crew mistakenly identified Sunbury as Daylesford through a gap in the clouds. This mistake led crews to believe they were 30 kilometres behind where they actually were on their flight plan. They overshot Essendon airport, and unable to see through heavy fog, crashed into Mount Dandenong, a few hundred metres from the summit.

Facebook tirade hits
Police should hear concerns over Facebook
By Jesse Graham A YARRA Ranges Council election candidate will be pressing charges against a Facebook poster, after violent and abusive messages were posted about her online. Chelsea McNab, who is running in the O’Shannassy Ward against incumbent councillor Jim Child, was notified by friends that a photo of her had been posted on an anti-Greens Facebook page. The caption begins “Is this Victoria’s worst local council candidate?”, and goes on to criticise Ms McNab for her support of the Great Forest National Park (GFNP) campaign. The topic has been divisive between timber industry and environment group representatives, who often clash over concerns for industry jobs against the critically endangered Leadbeater’s Possum in the Toolangi State Forest. However, commenters on the post quickly started posting personal abuse towards Ms McNab, with two commenters saying she should be kicked and sent to the Middle East and decapitated. One commenter also posted details of where Ms McNab lives. Speaking to the Mail, Ms McNab said it was confronting to read the posts, and that they made her worried for her safety and that of her children. She said she reported the post to Facebook, but was told the post did not breach the website’s community standards, and would be pressing charges through police. “I feel like I don’t want to be in
Friends of Forestry member Jacqui Commans has provided the following response over the story of candidate Chelsea McNab facing online abuse in a political environment:
Chelsea McNab has been on the receiving end of online abuse since running for council. 160541 Picture: JESSE GRAHAM this situation,” Ms McNab said. “When I signed up to be a councillor, the intention was genuinely for the good of the community and it wasn’t because I thought I’d take on war with the timber industry - because I do support a sustainable and small timber industry. “I don’t know how someone could think it’s OK. I just don’t see how that’s OK - they might laugh about it, like it’s funny ... it’s not funny to me, when you’re on the receiving end.”

Cr Child told the Mail that the commentary on the page was “absolutely outrageous”, and that he did not condone the comments against Ms McNab. “I believe that local government elections should be about local government issues, and that’s all it should be about,” he said. “It shouldn’t be about criticising fellow candidates - that should never happen, I would never engage in it. “I just could not condone that be-
haviour at all - it’s just absolutely outrageous that people should be making those comments.” Cr Child said he had been on the receiving end of online abuse and allegations in recent months, but that he did not respond to the posts at the time. “I will not respond to that, and I never will,” he said. Ms McNab said she expected to file charges with police on Friday 14 October.

I’LL start with saying that no-one we know has written these supposed threats to Chelsea McNab, nor have we seen these threats. I speak for only the people we know in the timber industry, and we do not condone threats of violence, especially toward women. If these threats are real, then the correct channel of course is the police. Over the course of the past few days, many comments have been posted on the various social media sites regarding the upcoming local government elections. Some very positive comments, especially where the discussed issues have been all about the local government /council agenda; (but) some very negative comments where the topics being discussed have been focused on closing down a sustainable and vibrant timber industry by pushing for a GFNP (Great Forest National Park). Our timber industry is a state and federally run industry; it employs thousands throughout its production processes, and is ‘not’ local government business. In Victoria alone, there are in excess of 200,000 bush users. All will be affected; most of them negatively should our remaining state forests get turned into a GFNP. That tells me that on a public page such as Chelsea McNab’s Facebook page and the other social media outlets that Chelsea McNab is using to send her messages that she supports the closure of our timber industry by supporting a GFNP she is going to upset many people. Especially the people who work in the industry, support the industry and also those who are just sick and tired of their council elect pushing the ideals of the Greens. Many of the comments that have been made about Chelsea have been vulgar, personal and pretty awful. No-one deserves that. There are social media trolls on every page; I have read all of the comments that I could and very few indeed are even from the area or Victoria. They are trolls posting. If you are going to be out there and contentious with ideas, then unfortunately you run the risk of being one of their victims. Our workers have faeces flung at their trucks, urine thrown at their trucks, spat on, blockades so that they can’t get through to work and we get death threats, too. All because we work in an industry that a minority do not support. We don’t need another council elect trying to close it down through a platform that is there for local government issues. We hope you get some answers from the police, Chelsea McNab, regarding the supposed threats to you. As I have said before, we do not condone abuse of that kind at all. * Editor’s note: The ‘Mail’ has made it clear in the adjacent article on Chelsea McNab the abuse has come through an online forum with an anti-Greens sentiment, not one affiliated with the local timber industry.

Feds move to back CFA By Peter Douglas THE Liberal Party on Monday, 10 October, passed changes to the federal Fair Work Act, which aim to halt restrictions on Country Fire Authority (CFA) volunteers performing their duties. Thought yet to be tested, in effect the legislation, which won the support a majority of senate crossbenchers, aims to block the present enterprise bargaining agreement (EBA) that is being put to the CFA. Aspects of the EBA have been the source of the major dispute between the Victorian Government, the United Firefighters Union (UFU) and the CFA; including fears from the CFA over a ‘seven on the fire ground’ clause that would require seven paid firefighters to be dispatched to a fire before work could begin. Both sides of politics have come out and spoken vehemently on the recent legislation, with the Liberals saying they had made good on their promise to block the EBA. Monbulk MP and Victorian Emergency Services Minister, James Merlino, described the legislation as “completely unnecessary” and merely “a political stunt”. “As far as the Federal Government and federal legislation, this changes nothing. As I’ve said the whole way through it was a political stunt by Malcolm Turnbull,” he said. “Look at the evidence ... the Federal Employment Minister was caught out about the seven-on-the-ground clause. “The senate inquiry into the legislation itself was looking at an old version of the agreement - that did not include the clauses that specifically protect the role of our volunteers. It’s been exposed as a farce ... it
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and La Trobe MP Jason Wood speak out over the enterprise bargaining agreement. 155760 won’t change anything.” Mr Merlino insisted the legislation wasn’t a done deal and said there might be a challenge. “Pending a Supreme Court challenge, the agreement will go to the firefighters to a vote,” he said. “Once that is conducted, it’ll go to the Fair Work Commission. “At the Fair Work Commission, that’s where we’ll see the impact of this legislation.” The Liberals first flagged the move in June this year as Deputy Liberal Leader, Julie Bishop, toured Belgrave with La Trobe MP, Jason Wood, who was then amid an election campaign.
Upey in the eautiful Dandenong Ranges
At a Belgrave CFA rally, which took place near Mr Merlino’s office, the pair declared the Federal Government would use its powers to halt approval of the EBA. At the time, Ms Bishop implored the CFA to support the move. “We will not stand idly by and allow a Labor Government to unionise a volunteer organisation of 60,000 people across Victoria,” she said. But, as the legislation passed last week, Mr Wood said the Liberal Government had stood up for Victorian communities and the tens of thousands of volunteers who protected them. Mr Wood declared the legislation would mean the EBA can no longer
be used to undermine the capacity of emergency services bodies. “We have delivered on our commitment to protect the CFA from a hostile union takeover,” Mr Wood said. “This is a victory for men and women who have fought to defend the CFA and the role of its volunteers. “For 70 years, CFA volunteers have protected Victorian communities. “Now we have taken action to protect them, despite the Labor and the Greens cosying up to the UFU yet again.” Meanwhile, Gembrook MP and Shadow Minister for Emergency Services, Brad Battin, backed the move.
Picture: PETER DOUGLAS
“This legislation gives volunteer firefighters the respect Daniel Andrews wouldn’t afford,” he said. “Malcolm Turnbull’s decisive action was a positive step towards protecting the CFA from Daniel Andrews’ proposed union takeover. “Daniel Andrews’ war on volunteering is alarming – Victoria has lost over 300 years of combined emergency services staff experience, heading into a dangerous bushfire season. “The Victorian Liberal Nationals Coalition will continue to advocate for volunteer firefighters to ensure they can continue to do what they do best – protect Victorian families.”

Puppy farm crackdown By Jesse Graham ANIMAL Aid’s CEO has praised the “positive action” of the Victorian Government in addressing puppy farming, with new legislation introduced on Tuesday 11 October. Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford announced on Tuesday 11 October that the Domestic Animals Amendment (Puppy Farm and Pet Shops) Bill 2016 was to be introduced into the Victorian Parliament. Ms Pulford said the Bill would mean that breeders can only keep up to 10 fertile female dogs, down from 350, with a deadline of April 2020 for breeders to reduce their numbers through breeding out. The amendment will also mean that any Victorian with a fertile female dog who sells her puppies, or who has three or more fertile female cats and sells her kittens will have to register as a domestic animal business with their local council. Pet shops will only be able to sell puppies and kittens if they have come from a registered pound, shelter or foster carer under the proposed change. “Victorians love their pets, and we all want to know our furry family members have come from safe and caring homes, not from illegal and cruel puppy farms,” Ms Pulford said.
The new law will place stricter regulations on breeders of Picture: Rob Carew puppies and kittens. 145774 “We promised Victorians we would crack down on cruel and illegal puppy farms, and this delivers on that promise.” Animal Aid CEO Mark Menze said the organisation “fully supports” the government’s amendments. “Time and time again, shelters such as Animal Aid are left to deal with the butterfly effect puppy farm and backyard breeders cause,” he said “The Victorian Government has recently requested submissions for further animal welfare reform and we look forward to additional positive action
around compliance and enforcement of breaches in animal protection laws.” Foster carers looking after relinquished pets will be able to care for up to five animals without registering as a domestic animal business and will have reduced registration fees through council if the proposed changes pass Parliament. A central registry of domestic animal businesses will also be created by the Victorian Government, which Ms Pulford said will assist councils with registering breeders and policing the new law.
Letters Fat chance WHEN I picked up my mail on Wednesday, there were the postal votes for the upcoming council elections. There are nine people vying for three places in the 'Ranges Ward’. I was somewhat amazed to find that two of them were former councillors for the Ranges Ward. One put forward that he will always listen. Hello! You didn’t listen to our concerns when it looked like the kinder was to come down, and the other councillors likewise. I still have the article in which he said “the kinder is coming down, we have bought the Bailey Road Milk Bar, which is to be a hub". I am so happy that we, the good people of Cockatoo, pulled together as one and thwarted it. I wonder, ‘do either of them ever come to our little township?’. I think not. The milk bar is going to rack and ruin and, of course, no hub. Who said you can’t fight city hall and win - ‘we did’. So, surely neither of them can believe they can get back. It is time for new, younger people to be given a go. We need new blood! Val Butler, Cockatoo.

The recycle bin was not emptied, in spite of the fact it stands in the same place as always, and all the other bins were done. Only recycle rubbish in it, so no issue with compliance. Perhaps a genuine mistake by the driver? After five calls to council, and another call to contractor (JJ Richards), with an assurance someone would call me
back (which never happened). The bin still stands out front (overflowing now) proud and strong. It will, of course, eventually (hopefully) be emptied on its next due day, two weeks late. If I ran my business with such inept, inefficient procedures ... I would go broke. Our rates at work ... brilliant! Michael Alexander, Belgave Drycleaners.

Gibneys renew marriage vows By Jodie Symonds FERNTREE Gully lovers George and Colwyn Gibney celebrated 53 years of marriage by renewing their vows on Friday 14 October. The couple renewed their vows at the Willowbrooke Aged
Care Facility, and Anglican minister from St Thomas Anglican Church in Upper Ferntree Gully Rev Rafaella Pilz conducted the ceremony. Mrs Gibney was walked down the aisle by their son, Evan.
The reception followed with a three-course lunch and a traditional cutting of the wedding cake. A wedding singer entertained the guests. Heart-felt speeches were also made following the reception lunch.
Len Cox. very keen to rationalise the car parking at he Kilsyth shopping centre, which is a mess. I’m working with State Government to try to get a double storey car park at Mooroolbark Railway Station, which would be of immense value to everybody using trains and shopkeepers and other users of the shopping centre. What we’ve got at the moment is not enough car parking down there. 3. Why should your ward’s residents vote for you? Because I believe that I can get those things done. With the experience that I’ve got, my record is that every promise I’ve ever made at election time, I’ve fulfilled and I can do it with these as well. It’s easy to make promises, its not so easy to keep them and I always keep mine. JACLYN STRUTTON Jaclyn Strutton was contacted with a questionnaire, but did not respond by deadline.

LISA DI BATTISTA Lilydale 1. Why are you running to be a councillor with Yarra Ranges Council? The Council ‘ship’ needs to be steered towards a stronger, vibrant and safer community. I also want to show residents, council is not just about free lunches and photo opportunities; I’m prepared to work hard for our community to resolve the challenges facing us all. 2. What issues are most important to you, in terms of this election? Council in their decisions to show respect to residents; too often people’s questions/responses are ignored/not actioned. Replace token consultation with real engagement. 3. Why should your ward’s residents vote for you? I’m a local mum and professional with strong background in criminology who understands the effect of bad governance/poor social-policy choices and I believe it’s time for change to ensure we have the quality of living we deserve. LEN COX Montrose 1. Why are you running to be a councillor with Yarra Ranges Council? I’ve been one for some time. There’s still a lot left to be done. I've got a very strong desire to finish a lot of jobs and I like to see life in our municipality improve, and I can do that through council. 2. What issues are most important to you, in terms of this election? Well, look, there’s a lot of issues that are important. I’m keen to reduce the cost of spending money on the shire office, which I think has been well and truly overdone and I think that can happen with the new council. I’m keen to get the new football oval in Kilsyth that we’ve just acquired form the state. I’m keen to get some infrastructure in there, so there’s 200-300 young boys and girls can play football there and have somewhere to change and toilets. I’m keen to get the Kilsyth pool rebuilt because it’s ageing rapidly and it needs quite a bit of work. I’m

Olympic gold medalist Elia Green interacts with students at the 'Schools Re-Building Picture: INDRA PRIEDITIS Schools' launch at Upwey High School. 160587
Learn to help By Peter Douglas UPWEY High School was proud to host the launch of the 'Schools Rebuilding Schools’ program on Friday, 7 October. Students from both Upwey High School and Upwey South Primary School were in attendance to hear program ambassador, Elia Green, launch this new initiative to support education in Fiji. Green is an Olympic gold medallist in the Women’s Rugby Sevens from the 2016 Rio Olympics. On 20 February this year, Fiji was devastated by a category five cyclone. The 330km/h wind gusts destroyed homes, schools, in-

frastructure and people’s livelihoods. Thousands of children and families were displaced, while the devastating storm severely damaged education infrastructure. Many students are now educated in makeshift tents. But ‘Reach 4 Your Future Foundation’, a Victorian based Australian Charities and not for profit commission educational foundation, has partnered with Fiji’s Ministry of Education to assist in the reinstatement of two totally devastated schools in the islands of Koro and Levuka. Green said she was proud to help launch the program. “I was born in Fiji but had
the opportunity to grow up in Australia,” she said. “It is important that we support the people of Fiji in rebuilding their schools and lives. “This is a great program to show our neighbours in the Pacific that we care.” The program will connect schools, teachers and students with opportunities to develop ways to link their existing curriculum with principles of global awareness, disaster risk reduction and STEM-based learning initiatives. Both Upwey High School and Upwey South Primary School have signed up for the program and are keen to begin the work in rebuilding the damaged schools in Fiji.
PRIMARY school students across the country are busy practicing for the 'Music: Count Us In' initiative. Created in 2006 by Music Australia, the Count Us In initiative is celebrating its 10th year and is Australia’s biggest schools program. The program encourages young people to become passionate about music and music education and invites students from across the country to sing the same song, on the same day. Last year over half a million students from over 2100 schools joined the program to be a part of a united ensemble. One of the many schools taking part in the initiative will be Ferntree Gully’s very own, Saint John the Baptist Parish Primary School. Having been involved in the initiative since its inception in 2006, the Saint John’s
school choir even attended the Count Us In program of 2009 where 500 children from various schools joined in Federation Square to sing the ‘Music Is Everything’ song. Saint John’s will take part in singing this year’s song ‘Let It Play’ together in the school hall after watching the live webchat stream from the Sydney Opera House. All the students involved are extremely excited to be part of the Count Us In program and have been practicing fervently in preparation for celebration day on the 3 November says music teacher Lorraine Costa. Each year students from all across the country are chosen to write next year’s song - this year’s song ‘Let it play’ was written by four student songwriters - Stella Kelly, Tom Meadows, Bonnie Staude and Breanna Truscott. Working directly with
schools and teachers, Music: Count Us In exists to assist teachers in providing quality music education and to address the gap in specialist music education provision in many Australian schools. Students from all across Australia will be singing their hearts out in November and Saint John Baptist Parish Primary School students will be among them, but the students do say that the most important part is how music makes you feel. “It’s not about your voice it’s about the melody; the melody helps you to believe that you are you, I am me, and together we are amazing,” said students from the school. Although celebration day is just around the corner, schools can still lend their voices to the call for quality music education by registering for free at the Music Australia website.

Silvan goes old-school By Derek Schlennstedt OCTOBER the 14th marked the 140th birthday for Silvan Primary School. On that significant date in 1876, Silvan Primary School was registered as a state school and only a week later on the 24th of October 1876 a portable schoolroom and a teachers' area was built for the 22 children who began their schooling year. To celebrate this historic local milestone, Silvan Primary school will be holding a celebration and open day on Friday 18 November. The school will be going back to its roots to celebrate the 140 years and is inviting past and present students and people within the community to dress up in traditional 1870s garments. There will be a variety of entertaining displays and demonstrations including arts and craft stalls, a sausage sizzle and even Devonshire Tea. Current principal Damien Tirchett says that the celebration is about revisiting the school’s history and says there will be plenty of exciting activities on the day to accompany the 1870s setting. “It’s going to be a great day with a carnival atmosphere, we’re going to go back 140 years - there’ll be draught horses, archery, blacksmithing, and various old-fashioned games to celebrate the years of our existence,” Damien said. Among the activities, past students are being invited to be

immortalised in Silvan Primary School's history by creating a handprint in clay tiles which Damien says will be made into a mural. “We’re going to celebrate our community and the past alumni by inviting them back to do some art, they can place their hands in clay tiles so we can immortalise those people who have attended the school,” he said. Since its inception local families have benefitted from the services that the school and its staff have provided and Silvan primary has helped to foster mature and community-minded young people. Silvan school has continued to demonstrate a strong tradition in providing tailored education for its students, with a focus on sustainability, the environment and inclusive learning. The celebration day invites all past students and local community members to come and enjoy a fantastic fun-filled day. As Damien says, it’s all about the local community. “We’re going to celebrate our community, we really want to promote that sense of connectedness within the community,” he said. The celebration will be held at Silvan Primary School, 269 Monbulk Road, Silvan.

Evelin’s knowledge of real estate, property prices, what makes a buyer sign, and negotiation skills have been honed over her long career, which gives her an instinctive edge over what works, and a know-how that is second to none. “For me, Real Estate is about Dream Fulfilment”, Evelin says. “It’s about helping someone realize their dream and move to the next chapter of their own storybook.” That’s the part of her job she loves the most. It’s about the people she meets, and the relationships she creates with her open, warm, straightforward and zesty way. One day Evelin took a surprise phone call. The voice said “you may not remember me, but I remember how you treated me”. It was the person who had bought a house from her and now wanted to sell it with her - 12 years later! That simple call speaks volumes.

Evelin’s European background makes her multilingual, speaking Dutch, German and English, helpful for buyers and sellers alike. “When quality of service counts and for a friendly and companionate attitude with a dose of empathy and hard work, you can rely on Debbie, my assistant and myself to deliver the best result for the sale of your most valued asset, your home”. Call Evelin or Debbie to fill all your Real estate needs.

Catching interesting train of thought The Girl on the Train (MA15+) Starring: Emily Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson and Haley Bennett THE Girl on the Train is an enthralling psychological thriller adapted from the novel by Paula Hawkins. Rachel (Emily Blunt) is a depressed alcoholic who spends every day on the train to New York, fantasising about a happy couple she passes, while also obsessing over her ex-husband Tom (Justin Theroux). When the girl she observes, Megan (Haley Bennett), goes
missing, Rachel is convinced she saw something, and resolves to find her. In an exemplary cast, Blunt delivers an Oscar-worthy performance as Rachel. Her numb despair and helplessness are palpable, and you find yourself deeply invested in her search for Megan, as it finally gives her a long-craved sense of purpose. The dialogue is detailed and deeply insightful but never feels like a novel-esque info-dump, and the slow-burning narrative gradually unravels a fascinating mystery. The Girl on the Train is also
a prime example of the ‘unreliable narrator’ trope. Rachel’s (and our) assumptions about the people around her and even her own memories are constantly questioned and broken down, and this alone is immensely suspenseful. Unfortunately, the flashbacks can be disorienting, and the film does a poor job of establishing its characters in the introduction. While not as cohesive as Gone Girl, The Girl on the Train is still an engrossing, intimately bleak and superbly acted thriller. – Seth Lukas Hynes
THE Kids Fun Run with Thomas the Tank Engine event will now be held on Sunday, 27 November. After being postponed due to flooding around the Gembrook station, organisers are encouraging youngsters and parents to get out and support the event. Those who had already reg-
istered for the original Sunday, 9 October, race have been automatically transferred to the new date. The fun run will include the run for kids, showbags for runners, train rides on Thomas, market stalls, a petting zoo, jumping castles, a Thomas hunt, food and more. As well as being a great day, the event is also an annual fundraiser organised by the Rotary
Club of Emerald and District. This year, registration fees go towards helping to support the Cerebral Palsy Education Centre (CPEC), which is the only centre of its kind in Australia that specialises in supporting children with cerebral palsy. To help support the Cerebral Palsy Education Centre, register online at www.kidsfunrunwiththomas.org.au.
When the play is the thing By Peter Douglas AFTER its sold-out shows of 'Bums’ and 'Come Back for Light Refreshments After the Service’ in the Dandenongs over the past two years, Hobo Playhouse is returning to the hills with another comedy/drama - 'Me and My Friend’. This terrific play - featuring Steve Cooper, Jeff Jones, Belinda Winthrop and Michelle Zintschenko - will be performed at The Gem Theatre in Emerald for one show only on Saturday, November 5, at 8pm. 'Me and My Friend’ was written by Gillian Plowman and it is both hilarious and heart-breaking at once. A black comedy, the play explores the relationships between two ‘odd’ couples who have been released prematurely from mental hospital care. In the downstairs flat are Oz (Steve Cooper), who has never recovered from his mother’s death, and Bunny (Jeff Jones), whose ‘workaholism’ led to estrangement from his wife.
Michelle Zintschenko and Belinda Winthrop rehearse an emotional scene in ‘Me and My Friend’. 160454 Upstairs are Robin (Belinda Winthrop), a middle-class housewife who has a secret from her past, and Julia (Michelle Zintschentko), whose obsessive thoughts of men drew her into prostitution. Tickets are $25/$15. For bookings, visit: www.trybooking.com.au/ MTOX
New venue as festival fires By Jesse Graham MUSIC will fill the grounds of the Yarra Valley Racecourse on Sunday 23 October, with the annual Cuban Jazz Festival returning for its 13th year. The festival, which has been run at Coldstream’s Rochford Wines in previous years, will be held at the racecourse in Yarra Glen for the first time, running from 11am to 6pm. Festival director Alex Mitchelson told the Mail that the weather was looking fine after the valley’s recent storms, and that he hoped this year’s event would mark 13 straight years of good weather for the festival. “Everyone loves some sunny weather – we’re all just waiting for that sun to come through, and it’s perfect,” he said. Mr Mitchelson said the move to the racecourse meant that more food and wine providers would be at the festival, with local providers Zonzo Estate, De Bortoli, Hargreaves Hill, St Ronans Cider and Coldstream Brewery, among others, offering refreshments for festival goers. “This really has opened up a new demographic and offer a better product and find that common thread that everyone loves,” he said.
“
Everyone loves some sunny weather – we’re all just waiting for that sun to come through, and it’s perfect… – Alex Mitchelson
He said the event started in the early 2000s, when a wine tour member told him that they didn’t want to leave and asked him to put music on. “That sort of got me on the idea of setting up a little event,” he said. “So we started with 100 people, and each year it got bigger and bigger, and bigger and bigger.” This year, he said he was hoping 4000 people would come through the gates to listen to the jazz, R&B, salsa and commercial house music performed across the event’s four stages. Tickets to the Cuban Jazz Festival Harvest Picnic start from $55 per person. For more information, visit www.winequest.com.au
Yarra Valley residents will be able to enjoy a day of Cuban jazz, food and wine at the festival. Picture: CONTRIBUTED

Sing-along by campfire By Jodie Symonds MOUNT EVELYN residents rugged up for a night of delicious sausage sizzles and damper by a toasty warm campfire on Friday 14 October. The Community Campfire Night was held at the Mount Evelyn Scout Hall. Guests enjoyed a catch-up with friends, as well as damper making and cooking, dancing, marshmallow-toasting and campfire sing-alongs. Mount Evelyn CFA performed demonstrations on tackling their entry into a burning house. There were a range of activities for the whole family to enjoy, while the event gave residents the chance to meet and connect with others in the community. Photographer Greg Carrick was there to capture all the action.

Kings ride on Luck By Steve Brown FTGDCA UPPER Ferntree Gully made a grand entrance upon return to the Norm Reeves Shield, defeating last season’s finalist, The Basin, by just two wickets with one over to spare. The Basin batted first to compile 8/137 on the back of a lone hand from Danny Rundle, unbeaten on 66, while Steve Collard claimed 3/22. In reply, the Kings relied on Shane Luck (33) and tailender Todd Burley’s match-winning innings of 33 not out to salute in the season’s opener. Former Woori Yallock bowler Ben Hayes took 3/27 from eight overs for The Basin. The gem of Upwey, Chris Jewell, showed his class polishing off 82 as Upwey-Tecoma dispatched Ferntree Gully to the tune of 35 runs at the Wally Tew Reserve. Chasing 7/179 the Gully Blues fell for 144 as former Mountain Gate speedster Cameron Wheeler bagged 3/21 from seven overs including the prize wickets of Josh Henry and Jayden Bradbury. Tigers skipper Steve Moore also contributed with three wickets. Reigning premiers Knoxfield hit the ground running against Knox Gardens with a resounding win by 66 runs. The Knights elected to bat first,
posting 9/222 with last season’s grand final man of the match Tom Boxell starting well with 68. Adith Sundaresh provided backup with 37 and also claimed 3/20 with the ball. Knox Gardens occupied the crease for only 35 overs, with Naraj DeSilva (40) top scoring after stints with Premier clubs Frankston and Hawthorn. Belgrave got the points in a close one against Monbulk as run machine Johnathan Levell opened the season brilliantly with 63. Levell was ably supported by Simon Hill (62) while Craig Broekof took 3/26. The Hawks fell just short in a tight finish, going down by six runs. Mountain Gate will be glad to see the back of the Morris brothers as Eildon Park dominated Round 1 against the Gators. Cody Morris belted 93 while Ben chipped in with 35 as the Panthers scored 5/236. For the Gators, only Luke Bowyer (43) and Clint Buckland got going. However, they had little support, losing by 106 runs. In Decoite Shield, it was a welcome return to the FTGDCA by the Olinda Cricket Club after four decades. However, they fell to St Johns Tecoma by 83 runs, with Kyle Chandler scoring a century for the winners.
Front-runners, Lysterfield, aided by top performances with the bat from former Victorian Under 17s player Anthony Brolic and Nathan Walsh, proved too strong for Rowville. South Belgrave had the game in control defeating Knoxfield and Ferntree Gully Footballers stunned Johnson Park, Reeves Shield premiers just 18 months ago by six wickets at Pickett Reserve.

Records broken in second week By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS YARRA Ranges Athletics is only two weeks into the track and field season and club records are already being broken. This includes both at Saturday morning Little Athletics and at the afternoon AV Shield where our senior team competes. A fantastic turnout of the younger athletes on Saturday morning took advantage of some very healthy tail winds to record some excellent results in many events. It was fantastic to see some great numbers in each age group making the competitive and social side of athletics so much more enjoyable. A big thanks to all the helpers, team leaders and others helping when asked.
Without your help and support, the club would not be able to produce the fun event and atmosphere that they do. The senior team competed in very windy conditions at Nunawading on Saturday afternoon. Despite the wind, the club had another strong showing of athletes across the various age groups compete. Well done to everyone who competed and welcome to the new athletes, Martin, Daniel and Olivia. Results are not yet available, but after a strong showing in Round 1, the club is hopeful of continuing this week. Next week, the senior team compete in Round 3 at Aberfeldie while our Little Athletics competition continues from 8am on Saturday. Many club athletes have made it

Monbulk swings into action MONBULK CRICKET IT WAS great to see the sun out (although very windy) this weekend and Monbulk cricketers back on the park. The club is fielding five senior teams and two Under 16s teams, which is the first time for many years. Friday night saw the Milo in2cricket registration night (not too late to join), which starts on Friday, 4 November, along with the Under 11s and two Under 10s teams. Sunday, 24 October, is the ninth annual Monbulk Fun Run, hosted by the Monbulk Cricket Club.
The club would love to see you all enter either the 8km or 4km run or walk. This is a community/family event and starts and finishes at the Monbulk Cricket Ground at 9am (8am - 8.30am registrations). This year there will be market stalls, coffee van, Rotary barbecue and a Halloween Special Event (best dressed award). Funds raised go to Monbulk Rotary Club Community Support Account (for those affected by loss or tragedy) and MADCOW, supporting community projects.
