Suburban mental home bid canned By Luke Voogt
Father Kevin Dillon
The Catholic church has scuttled plans to house mentally ill people on a site it owns at Thomson. Objections from residents forced the church to withdraw support for the facility, said St Mary’s Parish priest Father Kevin Dillon. Fr Dillion said he was disappointed but gave his word in 2014 that the proposal
would proceed only with local support. “If something meant to do good is doing damage to good people you quit,” he told the Indy. “The withdrawal of the church means people don’t have to worry it’s going to rear its head again.” The church had planned to lease 46 Lomond Terrace to Haven Foundation for a 16-bed facility, near two schools, a child care centre and a liquor store.
Fr Dillion said Haven “got off on the wrong foot” when it first presented the plan at an “ugly” community meeting in 2014. “Haven made some considerable efforts to help people understand the non-threatening nature of the people who would live there,” he said. “But early perceptions can do a lot of damage.” Continued page 4

Biker dies on ocean road
NEWS
In Brief Aggravated burglary
A fatal crash on the Great Ocean Road has lifted the region’s 2016 road toll to double the figure for the same time last year. Victoria Police said a motorcyclist died after colliding with a truck on a bend at Eastern View about 1pm Thursday. The rider died at the scene. The uninjured truck driver was assisting police at the scene when the Indy went to press. Police had yet to release the rider’s name. The crash closed the Great Ocean Road between Eastern View and Lorne as investigations continued. The fatality was the 10th road death for greater Geelong and Surf Coast Shire this year and double the toll for both municipalities at the
same time in 2015. The death brought the Victorian toll to 231, up 13 per cent on 205 at 20 October 2015. Victoria has recorded 44 motorcyclist deaths so far this year, up 24 on 2015. Geelong’s Transport Accident Commission office has launched a rider safety promotion focussing on Moto GP fans heading to Phillip Island this weekend. “We’re asking everyone heading to the island, regardless of whether you’re on two wheels or four, to be mindful of each other and plan your trips to get to and from the event safely,” said the TAC’s Samantha Cockfield. “We’d like riders to demand ABS when shopping for their next bike because our research
shows us it can reduce the rate of rider deaths and serious injuries by around 30 per cent.” The focus on motorbike safety comes as the TAC promotes a Safe System supporting its Towards Zero campaign. The system comprises four pillars: Safe Vehicles, Safe Speeds, Safe Roads, Safe People. The Geelong Indy has joined forces with the TAC to explain the pillars with a series of stories over the next few weeks. The first instalment, on this page, explains the importance of buying vehicles with modern safety features, such as side airbags, traction control and ABS brakes.
Two raiders have stolen “various items” in an early-morning aggravated burglary at Drumcondra, according to police. The pair left in a dark-coloured hatchback after the incident around 6.15am last Friday, police posted on Facebook this week.
Irish winner An Irish hurdler has carried jockey Kerrin McEvoy to his third Geelong Cup victory. Seven-year-old gelding Qewy pulled away from Grey Lion toward the end of the final straight to win the $300,000 group-three cup on Wednesday.
Scam warning Bogus phone callers offering discounts on council rates could be trying to rip off Geelong households, City Hall has warned. A resident had alerted the council to a call from an apparent overseas call centre at a time when the council was not running any surveys, said strategy and performance manager William Tieppo.
Forward shuffle The Cats have dumped one battler tall forward and drafted another to cap off the AFL’s trade week. Geelong sent Shane Kersten to Fremantle on Wednesday but added Aaron Black (pictured) before trading closed on Thursday, with both players unable to cement regular spaces in the senior teams of their former sides.

Put safety features first for young drivers, say experts The idea that car safety is expensive is wrong, according to Geelong motor dealer Justin Hanneysee. Mr Hanneysee said many affordable secondhand vehicles were now chock full of safety features which offer peace of mind to motorists on a budget and parents of first-time divers. He pointed out a 2006 9-3 SAAB with 10 airbags for less than $10,000. Mr Hanneysee was also a big fan of traction control, which is now common in many secondhand cars. “It takes all the power away from the engine until the wheels stop spinning,” he said.
Mr Hanneysee talked up the value of choosing cars with added safety features as the TAC promoted its new four-pillar Safe System, which includes a focus on choosing the right vehicle to avoid or survive accidents. TAC’s Samantha Buckis said the Safe Vehicles was particularly relevant to new drivers, who were
notoriously over-represented in accidents statistics. She urged motorists to always choose vehicles with potentially life-saving features like airbags, ABS and traction control. “It just gives young drivers that bit of extra support on the road - they won’t even know it’s there until they need it.” Ms Buckis urged parents who were nervous about their kids hitting the road alone for the first time to check out TAC’s How Safe is Your Car website. “You can search by budget, which is a big consideration for young people. All the vehicles are probation-approved.”
Work will begin today (Friday) on the first stage of a $6.7 million sports precinct to host football, cricket and soccer at Drysdale, City Hall has announced. Stage one would include an AFL and cricket oval, a multi-purpose field, lighting and a relocatable pavilion, the City said.
Racing cash The Andrews government has taken a punt on winning votes with a funding announcement for Geelong Race Club on the day of the city’s biggest racing event. The Government used the Geelong Cup to pledged $350,000 toward a $700,000 “major makeover” at the club, creating up to 30 jobs during the project.

Double Take After recently farewelling Ford manufacturing jobs, Geelong could be looking toward a brighter future thanks to its ever-growing legion of public servants. After all, faux-angry Liberals this week citied an Andrews government report indicating that fat-cat numbers would continue ballooning at a rate similar to their wages. The Libs, whose MPs, it should be noted, are also on pretty generous taxpayer moola, pointed out that Victoria now has almost 2000 executive officers on the public teat. And, according to the report, they’re set for a 14.7 per cent hike in “base-range” salary from $152,560 to $175,000, topping out at an “indicative” maximum of $432,000. The report also recommended removing a cap on senior bureaucrat numbers and paying their secretaries more. The Libs suggested all this was a bad thing,

and many battling taxpayers would agree. But now consider that Geelong’s largest employers are all now public bodies: Barwon Health, the education department, City Hall et al. Fr Dillion received several letters from residents opposing the accommodation recently. The church withdrew the lease after lengthy discussions, he said. The proposed building’s size and “heightened fear” in the community also motivated local opposition, Fr Dillion believed. “People don’t trust in neighbours the way they used to.” The proposed building would, ironically, have been less threatening than a block of flats anyone could occupy, Fr Dillion said “Every person there would have had a working with children check, a police check and no drug and alcohol issues.” The church first offered the lease after seeing Haven Foundation’s work firsthand at a South Yarra facility.
“We went to visit and were enormously impressed with the project,” Father Dillion said. “The neighbours were very positive about it.” Haven Foundation’s community consultation in South Yarra was much more comprehensive than in Geelong, Fr Dillion said. “They knocked on doors and talked to neighbours first. It would have been far better – although more painstaking – to spell it out to people here.” Fr Dillion hoped the foundation would find another location in Geelong. “There’s got to be somewhere better they can do this.” Haven Foundation chairman Allan Fels said many locals had “stressed the desperate need for this kind of accommodation in Geelong” since last week. “We’ll consider other options in Geelong and Victoria,” he told the Indy.

Salvos struggle with ‘rough’ flood By Luke Voogt The Salvation Army is struggling to house Geelong’s homeless amid a spike in referrals, a local advocate has said. The charity was receiving four or five new referrals daily, said male homeless networker John Hutchinson. “When I go out on an outreach night I’ll meet two or three people I haven’t seen before. I don’t think people realise the extent of the rough sleeping problem in Geelong.” The Salvos had turned to caravan parks, hotels and vacant rooms for emergency accommodation after its refuges reached capacity, Mr Hutchinson said. The charity was turning single women away from its 14-room refuge to make room for families, some fleeing domestic violence, he said. Mr Hutchinson cited a five-year-old boy who told him he felt safe “for the first time in his life” as the refuge gates closed behind him. “If we’ve got a woman with children we have to give them first priority. There’s just not enough for single (homeless) women in Geelong.” One of the single women, Sandra Price, said she had been sleeping in coaches boxes and grandstands around Geelong. The sites were “far from safe” but local football ovals were quieter and away from abusive “drunken idiots” in the city at night, she said. She was lucky to get “three hours sleep a night”. “I’m terrified at the moment.” Ms Price said she was fighting a drug addiction on the streets but had remained sober most of the past two years. “Every now and then I fall off again because there’s no help and no one to talk to.” Mr Hutchinson said drug-use plagued some accommodation sites, with dealers targeting the homeless and vulnerable. Some homeless people fighting addiction would rather save money and live on the street than face the temptation to relapse, he said. “When you put them together without any sup-
UNSEEN: Salvos outreach worker John Hutchinson, right, with Michael who is one of many people who are sleeping rough in Geelong. 160754 port what help have they got?” But the Salvos had a plan to help, Mr Hutchinson said. He was living with people in emergency accommodation, making improvements to their rooms after hours. The idea was not to “spy” on them but to hear their stories and help them find support, he said. “I’m making some real inroads. We want to use it as a pilot model that we can use at other places.” The Salvos’ other plan was to create a local shelter
which would provide a range of homeless services in one place, Mr Hutchinson said. “To get holistic support they have go to 10 different sites around the city. We pretty close to nailing a community space where we can deal with all the problems together.” SalvoConnect Barwon network director Lorrinda Hamilton called Mr Hutchinson’s commitment incredible. She warned that the closure of local industries
like Ford could send former workers who might have never accessed Centrelink into poverty. Redundancy payments could quickly disappear when workers were used to regular wages, Ms Hamilton said. “They can get lost really quickly with the system.” Geelong Salvos will host a Walking Home event to raise awareness for the homeless on 5 November. CREATIVE: Nargis Nianatullah, Zahra Hussaini and Farzana Hussaini have choreographed moves for an Australiawide event next month. 160469
United in song with moves to match By Luke Voogt Northern Bay College student and Bollywood fanatic Zahra Hussaini can’t wait to dance in Music Australia’s Count Us In next month. “I was so excited to be chosen for the dance,” the grade four student said. Zahra, 12, helped her fellow students choreograph the dance moves for the Geelong schools participating in the event. “A bit nervous but I’m proud of myself and my friends,” she said. Zahra dreams of one day being a Bollywood star and loves the creativity of dance. “It’s having a go but not just doing what the teacher tells you to do,” she said.
The college’s performing arts co-ordinator Amanda Baulch said her students had plenty of input. “They all choreograph it in small groups themselves – then we sort of came up with the final dance.” The college taped the dance before sending it to other Geelong schools “It saves me going around to the different schools to teach it,” Ms Baulch said. She said Count Us In was a great way to unite schools. “Generally schools in Geelong only come together to compete against each other.” Shools around Australia will sing the same song together as part of the 10th Count Us In celebration day on 3 November.

Patrol car takes the back roads to help beat a killer Belmont’s Graeme McMahon will take to the nation’s backroads in an American-style highway patrol car for his eighth Camp Quality esCarpade this month. Graeme and his team have raised about $13,000 of their $15,000 goal. “But we’ve still got til next Friday,” he said. “We got up to $18,000 in 2011 but we had a big a sponsor that year.” The 56-year-old and three good mates will jump in his trusty police-themed VP Commodore for the 2000km trip, joining 70 cars from around Australia. Graeme has loved meeting locals in the country’s lesser known towns on past esCarpades. “You get to see a lot of the back country that you wouldn’t see on the main highways,” he said. “We go through a lot of small towns and do school visits as well – it kind of makes their day.” Graeme’s team has fitted the Commodore with light-truck 4WD tyres for the trip, which he said was about 70 per cent dirt roads. “You’ve got to prepare the car for the off-road stuff.” Graeme said he has never had a puncture in the esCarpade – which is fortunate for someone running a tyre business. He remembers the tour running into trouble one year in Carnarvon Gorge, Queensland. “The roads were just that rocky – out of 70 cars there were 50 punctures,” he said. “I should have had a tyre service out at Roma I would have made a fortune that day.” The esCarpade will visit Geelong on 27 October for the first time since 2011, Graeme said. The cars will stop at Eastern Beach and Clairvaux Catholic School in Belmont. Graeme first got involved with Camp Quality because “most of money raised goes directly to the children”.
QUALITY RIDE: Gavin Jones, Graeme McMahon and Craig Watson were preparing for Camp Quality’s 2000km esCarpade this week. 160756 The charity provides family retreats and other services for children with cancer. “It gets them away from it all – they can let their hair down and have fun with kids going through the same thing,” Graeme said.
Graeme’s friend Craig Watson will man Geelong’s other car in the event – a Mini Cooper station wagon. “He’s going to have fun on dirt roads, I tell you,” Graeme said.

Warnings issued after syringe find The discovery of more syringes in public toilets on Geelong's waterfront has prompted City Hall to issue a public safety warning. Council cleaners found two syringes on Tuesday after a Geelong mother made headlines on Monday over fears for her two-year-old daughter's health after she accidentally pricked herself on a needle in a waterfront toilet. City Hall said the cleaners found the syringes hidden in paper dispensers in toilets near Cunningham Pier and Transvaal Square despite the presence of sharps disposals boxes in both toilet blocks. Council would ramp up cleaning of all public toilets in Geelong, said investment and attraction general manager Brett Luxford. Brett Luxford “It’s incredibly disappointing and potentially dangerous that people would dump their used syringes in public toilets,” Mr Luxford said. “It’s very concerning these potentially harmful syringes are being left where City cleaners and members of our community could unwittingly injure themselves.” Mr Luxford said City Hall had instructed its cleaners to routinely check for sharps within paper dispensers in their regular rounds. He called on members of the public to report any syringes in public toilet blocks to the City. “We don’t want to cause the public to worry, but we feel it is important to remind the community to take care when using any public facility.” Mr Luxford said City Hall would investigate how to improve the protection of paper dispensers from tampering in all Geelong public toilet blocks.

Helpers show they're real troopers
Disco works for this type of cure By Luke Voogt
UNDERSTANDING: Isaac Lenehan with his mother's book Peeking into Type 1 Diabetes.
Grovedale’s Amanda Lenehan would give anything to find a cure for her son Isaac’s type one diabetes. “I’d sell the house – it wouldn’t matter how much it would cost,” she said. Since Isaac’s diagnosis, Amanda has walked, held sales and even skydived with her mum and sister to fund-raise for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. “We’ve probably raised about $20,000 over six years,” she said. Amanda and three local mums – the self-titled “T1 Troopers” – will put on a children’s disco this weekend in their latest fund-raising effort. The mums met through their sons, who befriended Isaac when he started primary school. Amanda said Isaac’s friends would help him if he had a “hypo” – a hypoglycaemic event blood sugar drops low. This included keeping him company at lunchtime if he was required to stay inside with a teacher monitoring his condition. “They look after each other so well,” she said. The boy’s friendship inspired Amanda to write a book, Peeking into Type 1 Diabetes, after her son tried to explain the condition to his friends. “I didn’t think there was anything really basic to explain to kids,” she said. She has sold about 200 copies and was thrilled to help young children understand diabetes. “I wasn’t writing it to be published or anything, I was just writing it for us,” she said.
“When you’re five or six years old at school it’s a bit hard to explain why you have a pump into you.” When Isaac was three, his family decided to use a stomach pump to deliver his insulin. Amanda explained insulin needles required diabetics to eat at regular intervals, whereas the pump allows the user to input settings based on their needs. “It’s a bit more individualised. It just gives us a bit more freedom.” Amanda described the looking after a child with diabetes as full-on. “You just have the phone on you all the time,” she said. Isaac’s grandfather has had type one diabetes for 40 years and uses an insulin pen instead. Amanda said she wanted to dispel the myth that diabetes resulted from poor eating habits. “Anyone can get it, at any age.” The T1 Troopers put on their first disco last year, after discovering a friend of Isaac’s dad was a former DJ. Phillipa Sharp was one of the “Troopers“ who organised the event. “It all stems from a group of beautiful boys forming a friendship,” she said. She said Isaac and Amanda’s journey inspired her. “He’s a strong little boy.” The Disco for Isaac starts at 6pm on Saturday at Grovedale Community Hub. All proceeds will go to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Barwon Health Foundation. For more information, email kidsdisco4isaac@outlook.com.

Toilet, closure woes in takeover call An absence of toilets at one of the Great Ocean Road’s major tourist attractions has been raised in federal parliament as justification for a funding takeover. Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson cited the Eastern View archway and recent closures of the iconic road for repairs in her call for the Turnbull
Government to “directly manage” the $45 million Tourism Demand Driver Infrastructure Program. The program funded state and territory tourism projects, but Victoria had yet to spend any of the money on the ocean road, Ms Henderson said. “I think the time is ripe for our government to take over this funding,” Ms Henderson said.
ONLY THE LONELY: Senior Citizens on a walking tour through Geelong, part of local initiatives to combat chronic loneliness across the city.
City identifies itself as an old friend

Chronic loneliness among senior citizens has prompted City Hall to declare Geelong “agefriendly”. Council joined other local government, business and community groups as a signatory to the Age-Friendly Victoria declaration last week. A report revealing that chronic loneliness among Victorian seniors ranged from seven to 12 per cent, inspired the state’s municipal association to establish the declaration. The initiative sought to develop partnerships for “age-friendly projects … to improve community participation and health and social outcomes for all Victorian seniors”, City Hall's Linda Quinn said.
“Changes to the built environment, such as improved precinct lighting, development of local footpath networks and better public seating are some examples of how we are already working to make things better for older people,” Ms Quinn said. “We also support older people to expand their networks and participate in community life through initiatives such as the Geelong Seniors Festival and Positive Ageing Network.” City Hall said Geelong businesses, community groups and non-government organisations could sign up to the declaration at seniorsonline.vic.gov. au/get-involved/age-friendly-victoria

Young refugees go bush By Luke Voogt North Geelong refugee students have had their first taste of Australian bushland in a three-day trek near Bendigo. “It was the first time I’ve been camping in my life,” said North Geelong Secondary College student Mohammed Maalim. Camping was one of many firsts on the trip for Mohammed, along with seeing a kangaroo and learning about Australia’s Aboriginal culture. The 20-year-old said camps like this month’s were great for new arrivals to get to “know the culture of Australia”. Mohammed’s family fled to Kenya from Somalia as civil war ravaged the county. His grandmother was raped and his aunt killed during the war, he said. “We moved to Kenya so that we could get some help.”
Mohammed and his eight siblings grew up in a Kenyan refugee camp living off limited rations of maize, oats and beans for nearly 20 years. Criminals plagued the camp, raping refugees and stealing their scant food and water supplies, Mohammed said. Luckily his father protected the family, he said. Despite only one day of schooling a week, Mohammend found work as a carpenter during his last years in Kenya “so I could earn some money and help my family”. Since immigrating to Australia with his family nine months ago, he has wanted to continue his carpentry career. “I’m very good at it and it’s what I like to do,” he said. North Geelong Secondary College VCAL coordinator Julie Elkin said the trek was about getting the 18 students out of their comfort zone. “It’s always really pleasing to see how all the kids encourage each other,” she said.
OUT BUSH: Mohammed Maalim, at front, with refugee students from North Geelong Secondary College.
“I think most of them are already very appreciative of their new country.” Ms Elkin said the school had a strong English as an Additional Language program that catered for new arrivals. She said new arrivals often struggled to find employment due to their developing English skills. “We’re always looking for people who want to take them as work placement.” “They don’t have the networks that people that grow up here have. They can’t always go to their extended family or friends for jobs and apprenticeships.” “But they are generally really hard workers that actually do want to succeed.” Victorian non-profit group Doxa funded the trek. “Which was great for us – being in the northern suburbs we struggle for funds sometimes,” Ms Elkin said.
Through voluntary hosng, families beer appreciate a different culture and language. High School exchange students are arriving in February 2017 from France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Denmark and Japan.

Letters Give mentally ill a fair go I write to express disbelief and sadness upon reading last week’s Geelong Indy article titled Street Fight Over Mental Health Bid. The uneducated objections to the location of the Haven were a shock as to how alive and dangerous is the stigma surrounding mental health despite wellknown campaigns on mental illness such as the Are You Okay? day. Mental Illness does not discriminate. Victims can be the teacher with an eating disorder, the nurse with major depression, the accountant with obsessive compulsive disorder, the architect with bipolar, the retail assistant with post-traumatic stress disorder, the electrician with anxiety. Almost half of the Australian population will experience a mental health disorder at some point in their life, according to Mental Health Council of Australia. These people are our friends, partners and children. They are the people that you interact with every day without knowing the truth that hides behind their polite smile. We shouldn’t be so quick to judge and stereotype sufferers of mental illness because we’d likely be mistaken. Kath Welch Bell Post Hill
Safe seats’ infrastructure malaise Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsay (Letters, 14 October) rightly lamented the lack of provincial infrastructure investment. Yet, perhaps because it was too close to home, his comments remained generalised and selective. Successive state and federal governments, including the incumbents, have been able to avoid serious investment because of safe-seat configurations. Locally, regional advocacy by G21, Committee for Geelong, Barwon Regional Partnership, unions and manufacturing groups need to individually and collectively usurp generally inept political representation but lack the refined dynamism to do so. In particular, G21’s broad-brush, predictable and genteel strategy, agenda and acceptance now sees the Great Ocean Road, with a $1 billion-plus annual turnover, crumbling and eight-balled because of miserly, ineffective maintenance upgrade handouts

Buckets & Bouquets Bouquets to the organisers of the seniors’ festival. My husband and I are so grateful for some of the wonderful events in which we participated. M Bradshaw, Grovedale Bouquets to Centrelink Geelong for helping my son last week when he found himself in a desperate situation. Grateful Mum, Belmont Bouquets to Roaming Reptiles’ Tracey for efficiently taking control of my recent situation when my car overheated. She called the RACV and family and stayed with me until I was safe. Bouquets also to many passing motorists for their offers of help. What lovely people. Bless you all. 83-Year-Old Lady, Highton Buckets to the little piece of cr*p who removed a new pot from my front yard. I know who you are. Return it or face the music, you awful little poo. Angry Gardener, Geelong West
and Avalon Airport languishing on subsidies. So far as the former goes, any responsible advocacy body would have heeded and held firm to tourism boss Roger Grant’s view that the road requires a $500 million upgrade budget, funded if not by a toll then why not a lottery? Avalon, with regional tourism and fresh-foodexport-hub potential, could be kick-started by the Turnbull Government for comparatively little infrastructure outlay and administrative legislative effort. Richard Worland Manifold Heights
Active in opposition It’s amazing what a period in opposition has done for the Liberal Member for Western Victoria. Four years in government, when he was the invisible man, and two years in opposition have finally brought him out of hibernation.
Bouquets to City of Greater Geelong. I’m removing my 30-plus-year-old air-conditioner, which will certainly contain ozone-depleting gas. The City informed me it could be taken to the transfer station and de-gassed at no charge. Now that’s environmentally proactive local government. Barry Abley, Newtown Bouquets to the staff at BWS Drysdale, especially Scott. He goes out of his way to be helpful and is always polite and friendly. A helping hand makes shopping so pleasant for pensioners. Please continue the good work, Scott. Happy Pensioner, Grovedale

It is my belief that, should the sale go ahead, council should not close the existing yards but should reinstate them to operational status and begin construction of another facility somewhere in Geelong. The saleyards site must be worth millions of dollars but if such a sum is achieved we might never know where that money went. However, if another facility is built in the meantime then we will definitely know the whereabouts of this money. I ask the people of Geelong to add their support to my page. Farmers Australia wide have had a bad time in recent years so readers should show support for the people who put the food on their table and remember where the cheese came from that sits on their next pizza. Saleyards a pizza the puzzle In recent weeks I have become interested in the Geelong West saleyards issue, creating a Facebook page devoted to the issue. From talking to some of the farmers and others involved, some interesting facts have come to light and are included on my page. Readers can simply search Save The Saleyards on Facebook. The page is designed to inform readers and let them post thoughts on the issue and support the farmers. Some 2500 farmers will be adversely affected should the yards be permanently closed without a replacement facility built.
Peter Rees has over time written many letters denying any truth to global warming at every twist and turn but now wants me to “tell us when we had the debate” (Letters, 14 October). I wonder what he thought all his letters were about? The letters in which he refuted the science of CO2 as a greenhouse gas with nonsense come to mind as an example. Actually, I was erring on the side of decorum with an overly generous description of what has gone on here as debate. It is not. The real and proper debate ran its course long ago when the basic physics was first elucidated and then the clear and predicted evidence was observed. Since then the so-called debate has been driven by vested interest disinformation to resist change. Mr Rees continues with “true science demands and welcomes debate and challenge”. I say climate science does not need Mr Rees or his friends to keep it straight any more than do other fields such as medicine, physics, et cetera. Those words are just the emperor trying to convince you he has clothes. It’s time to just get on with it. Jukka Tuisku Barwon Heads

Message from the Premier This summer is forecast to be a dangerous fire season. Fire Action Week is the time for all Victorians to begin preparing. Many communities throughout Victoria have been battling with persistent rain and rising flood waters. This rainfall has provided the stimulus for increased growth of vegetation in forested, bush and grass fire areas across the state. As summer intensifies, these regions will dry out quickly, increasing the risk of uncontrollable fires, especially over the Christmas and summer holiday period. Emergency services are working with communities, businesses, local councils and government to reduce the risk in your area, while ensuring resources are in place to respond to all emergencies. However, it is up to you to understand the risk in your area, monitor conditions and take responsibility for your own safety and the safety of your household. Taking steps to get prepared before summer means you know what to do when a fire starts. Talk to your family and friends about how you’ll know when to leave and where to go to stay safe. Leaving early means leaving before a fire starts – not when you can see flames or smell smoke. Leaving early means avoiding panic, being trapped and making the wrong decisions that could be dire.
Use Fire Action Week to prepare your home and property and think about summer fire safety, especially if you live in bush and grass fire prone areas. Taking the right steps now will help make your decisions in an emergency easier and clearer. The steps to take are simple… · Talk to your household and neighbours about what you’ll do on high risk days and have a plan if fire threatens you and your home this summer · Check Fire Danger Ratings daily at emergency.vic.gov.au to find out how dangerous a fire would be if one started and monitor warnings, especially when the Fire Danger Rating is Severe, Extreme or Code Red · Pack an emergency kit of essentials – including important documents, a first aid kit, medications, blankets, water and a battery powered radio – and keep it handy Planning and preparing for fire is everyone’s responsibility. Make it yours this week and help keep your family and the community safe this summer. For more information on how to get prepared, go to emergency.vic. gov.au.

Be Fire Ready. THE REASONS ARE BLACK AND WHITE.
Fire Action Week The Right Time To Prepare
1. Plan what you’ll do in the event of a fire, talk to your household and know where to access information on high risk days. 2. Keep grass short. Fire can ignite and travel quickly through long grass. 3. Get rid of dry grass, leaves, twigs and loose bark around your home. 4. Remove or prune shrubs near windows and well away from branches of mature trees. 5. Cut back overhanging tree branches close to property – no branches within 10 metres. 6. Keep gutters and roof areas clear of leaf litter (if you are physically able to). 7. Remove all materials from around the home that could burn, such as boxes, furniture and woodpiles.

FINALLY FRIDAY
She’s living la vida Salsa By Luke Voogt Hamlyn Height’s Sonja Sanderson has a 15-yearlong addiction: Salsa dancing. “I’m addicted I confess,” said the president of Club La Vida Salsa Geelong. “If it resonates with you just become consumed by it.” Sonja has long loved the freedom and expression of the “saucy” dance. “In our day-to-day lives we are very ordered and controlled,” she said. “But when we are dancing we can just let go of that and express ourselves.” Club La Vida Salsa dances to “earthy and grounded” moves of Cuban Salsa, which grew from the country’s African migrant community. “It’s so interesting because this is a culture of people who were quite downtrodden and had a difficult life,” Sonja said. “Dancing was their one salvation and joy.” The club’s 40 salsa enthusiasts were always searching for more members, Sonja said. “It’s not for everyone but if they love it they just can’t get enough of it.” The best part of the club – apart from the dancing - was its friendly vibe, she said. “Women can go there by themselves and feel safe,” she said. Next month the club will return to the waterfront for “Geelong’s biggest live Latin dance event” – the third annual Salsa by the Bay. Sonja said the event attracts an eclectic audience from Geelong and Melbourne, including dance students and Latin American expats. Eight-piece band Carlito’s Way will return to Geelong bringing their Cuban rhythms and performing music reminiscent of The Buena Vista Social Club. DJ artist Mick Williams, direct from Mel-

Sonja said more than 200 people attended each of the last two events. “We’ve had fantastic support the last two years for this event,” she said. She said the club welcomed people to practice beforehand at salsa sessions each Monday night.

Geelong council is inviting locals to its biggest children’s event of the year this Sunday – a Family Fun Day at Drysdale’s Potato Shed. The fun-filled, free day includes live performances – by the Mik Maks and Theatre 3222 – face painting, an animal farm, a bungee run, crafts, and more. City Hall general manager community life, Linda Quinn, said the day attracts thousands of children and families each year. “There’s a host of exciting free activities and performances and we’re expecting another bumper crowd of around 7000 people this weekend,” Ms Quinn said. The event is part of Geelong council’s children’s week program, which runs from 22 October until Sunday 30 October. “The City has one of the largest Children’s Week programs in Victoria with more than 50 events throughout our region,” Ms Quinn said. FINALLY FRIDAY Rock tribute that performs indeed
CHEESE: Ventriloquist David Strassman and Ted E. Bare pose for a selfie.
Strassman’s talking it up
What’sat on
His brand new show, iTED E is an uproarious take on modern technology, promoters said. In a world-first, he will simultaneously operate five characters in a six-way conversation, with a handheld wireless remote that sets new standards in ventriloquism. Strassman and his puppet characters will bring mayhem to a set designed by one of New York’s most renowned stage designers, Luke Cantarella.
The artist who “made ventriloquism hip again” has appeared on TV numerous times and had his own show on Channel Nine, with subsequent series in the UK and New Zealand. But theatre is his favourite, and he can’t wait to take iTedE to stages across Victoria. Strassman is fresh from a Melbourne tour, where he performed for an extra week due to demand, promoters said.
His characters are a renegade band of puppets you would not want to meet on a dark night. Ted is cuter than ever, and Chuck just as evil, the spaced-out Kevin the Alien lets everyone know who’s really in charge, and Sid the Beaver cracks a heap of depraved jokes. David Strassman will perform at the Geelong Performing Arts Centre Playhouse next Monday to Wednesday. For information visit gpac.org. au or phone 5225 1200.
Five of the best Five Melbourne comedians touring regional Victoria will test the funny-bones of local punters in Geelong next month. The Amazing Travelling Comedy Tour’s promoters said the show featured “award-winning stand-ups” and You Tube ‘Stitch-up Guy’ Aaron Gocs. Other performers on the bill include RAW Comedy winners Matt Stewart and Angus Gordon, 2015 finalist Jess Perkins and “all-round legend” Nick Capper. The tour reaches Geelong Workers Club on 11 November.

David Strassman – perhaps the world’s greatest ventriloquist – will bring the sharp-tongued Chuck Wood and loveable Ted E. Bare to Geelong next week. Thrust into the world of social media, the veteran puppets have been constantly on their iPads and iPhones, ignoring the real world. With everyone connected to social media and the internet 24/7, will Strassman get them back under control?
Australia’s self-proclaimed “number-one AC/DC tribute show” plays North Geelong’s Sphinx Hotel next weekend. New South Wales-based Dirty Deeds has been covering Australia’s greatest rock expert for 20 years, billing itself as a “force to be reckoned with live on the big stage”. “Come to one of our shows and you’ll see amps, real loud Marshall amps, thumping Sonor drums, Paiste cymbals and mega bass amps, just like the real thing,” the band said, before having a crack at its rivals. “There are no backing tracks or trickery here like some other tribute acts getting around – no shade cloth with fake Marshallo stacked printed on it while the guitars go through computers off stage, no polystyrene bell, no toy cannons and no bloody wigs. “WTF is that all about?” Dirty Deeds describes itself as a “really good band” with a “brilliant frontman” and “one of the best lead guitarists to ever strut the stage”. AC/DC aficionados can find out whether the band lives up to its hype at the Sphinx on 29 October.

Collectors show they’re all glass A National Bottle and Collectables Show will come to Geelong for the first time in its 45-year history this weekend. The show will feature collections of almost everything – from radios and milk carts to historic bikes and salt shakers. Geelong Bottle and Collectables Club president David Smith said the show would have 170 displays with “museum quality items”. “There are items which have never been seen in public and likely never will be again.” Smith, an avid bottle collector, joined the club a decade ago. “I’m fairly new on the block,” he said. His love affair with 1960s and pre-1920s bottles began 25 years ago. “I walked into a shop in Cairns and there were some very beautiful coloured glass bottles on sale,” he said. It doesn’t matter if it’s soft drink, beer, chemicals or poison – so long as it’s glass container, Smith said. He was particularly keen to see a unique King

The 50-year-old also has a large assortment of odd items – with one thing in common. “So long as it’s got Geelong on it,” he said. David’s local items will join Geelong Cats vicepresident Bob Gartland’s lifetime collection of rare club memorabilia. Mr Gartland had never put the collection on display, David said. Show patrons will be able to buy, swap and sell collectables, with 250 metres of selling, valuations and a specialist 150-lot auction. “A lot of the items will be once only,” Smith said. Geelong Bottle and Collectables Club was 35 years old but still had three founding members, Smith said. The 45th National Bottle and Collectables Show will be at the Geelong Showgounds’ Agricultural Hall from 22 to 23 October. Smith said more information about the show was available by phoning 0419 434 306.

A creative array of artworks was put on display to celebrate the wonderful creativity at Woodlands House. In the 18th year of its annual Childrens’ Art Show, parents, family and friends delighted in looking at the masterpieces which their little ones had made over the previous months. It was fantastic to see so many in attendance and organisers hopes everyone enjoyed browsing the works of the different age groups. The evening was supported by the Mannerim Fire Brigade who supplied eager little (and big) hungry mouths with a sausage and drink on the night.

Foot-stomping fun for all the family “Unique families” will get together for free footstomping fun at Vines Road Community Centre next weekend to celebrate Children’s Week. Not Your Average Family Dance will feature the Billy Tea Bush Band putting on a show for children and adults of all abilities. Geelong-based community arts organisation Bluebird Foundation and Kids Plus will host the event for families “a little bit different from most”.
The differences could range from physical attributes and language to “a bad sense of humour or just bad wind”, the foundation says. The centre’s community hall will host Not Your Average Family Dance from 3.30pm to 5pm, Sunday 30 October. The foundation says entry is free but bookings are essential, at notyouraveragefamilydance. eventbrite.com.au.

Big power Chevrolet LS3 V8 engine is the key to the hottest Holden ever.
Muscle Holden’s beefed up image By Ewan Kennedy Sadly, the VF Commodore Series II is likely to be the last ever Holden family car made in Australia, though Holden may surprise us by introducing a further update in the next 12 months. However, the VF II SSV Redline sedan we tested last week has the final major upgrades and any future versions are likely to be minor dress-ups perhaps with special editions. Given Australians love of driving it comes as no surprise that sales of the sporty Commodore models – SV6, SS, SSV and SSV Redline – are now making up more than half of all Commodore sales. This gave us a great excuse to road test an SSV Redline powered by a Chevrolet LS3 6.2-litre V8. Yep, the big engine… OK, it’s a cliche – but there’s no substitute for cubic inches and we loved every minute we spent in the big Aussie bruiser, not only in the way the engine performs, but also in the sophisticated dynamics that keep all that power under control. Exterior design changes on the VF to make it the VFII are minor and are chiefly functional, being there for improved aerodynamics and the additional cooling requirements of the more powerful engine. Air vents on the bonnet assist the release of hot air from the engine bay, they also give the car a more aggressive look. Large corner fascia ducts have been added to channel air away from the front of the car. Our test car had the most powerful non-HSV Commodore engine ever produced. With 304 kW and 570 Nm the LS3 has significantly more power and torque than the 6.0-litre it replaced, not that 270 kW and 530 Nm in the superseded VF was anything to sneeze at. All that grunt goes the back wheels by way of either a six-speed manual or some sort of an automatic transmission – we didn’t ask about the latter when offered a test drive by Holden. Commodore VFII has GM’s MyLink system that works with smartphones through Bluetooth. USB and Aux ports are also installed. We have to admit to spending our time listening to the engine rather than to testing the audio output. Anyone who drives a car like this high-performance Holden should know what they are doing behind the wheel. There are huge reserves of safety thanks to the well-tuned suspension and excellent brakes. Selectable electronic overrides are there should you make small to medium mistakes. Should
Model range SS-V Redline 6.2-litre four-door sedan: $54,490 (manual), $56,690 (automatic) SS-V Redline Sportwagon 6.2-litre five-door wagon: $58,690 (automatic) something come unstuck in a big way Holden engineers have ensured their car got a five-star ANCAP rating. We have been complaining about the visibility problems created by too-wide A-pillars for many years. Obviously nothing is going to be done about this in the future, so we have no choice but to continue to live with it. This is the quite simply the quickest non-HSV Commodore ever, leaping from rest to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. The clutch and gearbox aren’t exactly userfriendly, but that’s all part of the fun in any USbased muscle car. The big V8 is supported by upgraded FE3 rear sports suspension aimed at improving ride comfort without affecting handling. Even when pushed hard through tight bends the hot Holden is well-balanced and stable. We managed some track driving at the historic Collingrove hillclimb during the VFII launch and pushing it to the limit never caused a moment’s doubt as to its ability to hang one. Our range-topping SSV Redline had Brembo brakes front and rear, these can haul off speed very rapidly without any sign of fade. We didn’t do any track work but feel the brakes could even handle that. While performance is the number one demand by owners of V8s, the sounds the engine emit run a close second. Holden developed a component called the Baillie Tip. Named after the engineer who designed it, Dr David Baillie, it uses an aperture in the tailpipe to reverberate sound back through the exhaust and into the cabin. It sounds great and brought smiles to the faces of all who travelled in the big Commodore. Fuel consumption of the SSV Redline is listed at 11.8 litres per 100km on the combined cycle. We found our review car running in the midteens most of the time but it can be brought under 10 litres per 100 on motorways. With future Commodores likely to take the European route and be powered by four-cylinder turbo-petrols, and V6 turbo and non-turbo petrols we suggest that V8 lovers get their backsides into one of these high-performance VF Series II models.

Low-impact collisions typical in shopping centre car parks are annoying to say the least. Add to this the fact that people rarely own up to damaging other people’s cars. It has been noticed that drivers are often scared to back-up any further due to very limited vision. These are the occasions where reverse sensors are very welcome. Bumper Master fits reversing sensors to help customers overcome fears of backing into objects or even pedestrians. Reversing sensors help prevent damage to owners’ cars as well as the vehicles of neighbours and other motorists. They can also help when backing out of tight garages and past narrow gateposts. Bumper Master can also help owners improve the appearance of bumpers when selling vehicles. Bumpers are the first part of any car to incur damage – and first impressions are important when trying to sell. All Bumper Master repairs come with a no-questions-asked warranty to give customers peace of mind. Best of all, most bumper repairs are done for less than the cost of insurance excesses. Located behind VicRoads at 3 Dowsett St, South Geelong, Bumper Master has proven experience in providing an alternative repair service to the bumper regions of any car. Owners wanting to improve the resale value of their cars should phone Bumper Master on 5221 0138.

SPORT Snapper time ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Anglers faced off against wet, windy weather again last week. Queenscliff Harbour provided shelter for Tackleworld Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lugt who banked pinkie snapper to just over 50cm along with silver trevally to 38cm during several outings. Adam found the last of the run-in tide most productive for casting soft plastics rigged on a jig head heavy enough to reach the bottom. Snapper anglers flocked to Clifton Springs as snapper schooled along the section of the channel known as the turn. Pilchard on a lightly weighted running sinker rig worked well when fished on a tide change. In closer, squid remained in excellent numbers for anglers who drifted over grass beds in 3m to 4m of water using artificial jigs. Alcoa Pier attracted large numbers of Australian salmon to 40cm. Anglers who found them said they were in exceptional numbers and keenly devouring lures. St Leonards recorded an increase in whiting captures, along with a larger average size. The entrance of Swan Bay hosted large schools of Australian salmon reaching 2kg on the run-in tide. Trolling or casting lures did the trick, with pike to almost 1m taken as by-catch. The Barwon River estuary continued allowing anglers to tangle with a wide variety of species. The recent rain should also put mulloway back on the chew. Bancoora Beach’s salmon action picked up for anglers spinning lures beaching. Fish to 2.5kg were caught at last light, with Sea Iron lures working best. Jan Juc and rock platforms either side of Lorne also held salmon. Freshwater anglers fared well on redfin, Chinook salmon, brown and rainbow trout during the ANSA convention. Tyler Sparks boated a 2.98kg brown trout while trolling a Daiwa TD 95 minnow at Lake Purrumbete.
Cats nearly back on track LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club has its season somewhat back on track, going down fighting last Saturday against Fitzroy Doncaster, before finally getting some points on the board on Sunday with a thrilling victory against Greenvale. On Saturday, the Cats bowled first and chased leather to the tune of 5/275, four bowlers managing just one wicket each. In reply, skipper Eamonn Vines led the way with 88, but with not much help, saw his side fall 45 runs short. On Sunday at Greenvale, Geelong bowled first again and it was the spin twins of Liam Buchanan with 3/39 and Brenton McDonald 3/13 who did the bulk of the work. McDonald’s spell in particular was a master class of leg spin bowling, as he helped restrict the hosts to 206 all out. In reply, Buchanan departed early for a duck, but a series of starts to Vines 34, Josh McDonald 36 and Tyler Larkin 46 got things back on track. But after a flurry of wickets, 6/140 made victory look a long way off. Tom Treble got the side back in it, making a gutsy 49 not out in fading light, and with two overs left to play, the Cats needed 11 more runs to win when the umpires called a halt to play due to bad light. That meant the calculators came out, and using the Duckworth Lewis method, Geelong were adjudged to have won the game, a deserved
result for a weekend where the boys fought it out both days. The game on Saturday 22 October is the last one dayer for the time being, and Geelong host Kingston Hawthorn in a game where they will hope to keep that winning feeling alive. In the Geelong Cricket Association, two undefeated teams in Newtown and Chilwell and St Joseph’s take on each other in the division one match of the round, the first of the two dayers for the season. The Two Blues have started the season brightly after narrowly avoiding relegation last season. Wins over Bell Post Hill and Leopold have been the perfect tonic. Dom Manthorpe took a bag of five wickets last week to restrict Leopold to 9/136, while Tim Hosking top scored with 42 as they cruised to a five- wicket win. St Joseph’s also had a great win, knocking off heavy weights East Belmont at Winter Reserve. Justin Foss was the star, making 91 at the top of the order in his side’s total of 5/201. He then backed up with the ball, snaring 3/43 from 10 overs, while Trent Walerys showed his class to take 4/20 in a close 14-run win. This game will be played at the St Joseph’s College Oval, and will be a real test for Newtown and Chilwell to see how far they’ve really come. While they have enjoyed a bright start to the season, Joeys look to be the early season premiership favourites, and should show it here.
MURGHEBOLUC v East Belmont, GEELONG CITY v Lara, LEOPOLD v St Peters, Bell Post Hill v GROVEDALE and NORTH GEELONG v South Barwon. In division two, another mouth-watering clash awaits between two undefeated sides, when Newcomb and District host Bell Park. Newcomb and District have been in blistering early season form, with Luke Slater leading the way with the bat, making 70 not out last week, on the back of 37 in round one. Josh Walker has been the mainstay in the bowling stakes, picking up 3/27 in round two against Alexander Thomson, as his side won by 60 runs. Meanwhile, Bell Park had a stirring win over Geelong West in a high- scoring affair. The Dragons bowled first, but were put to the sword by veteran Sam Loftus who made 70 in his side’s total of 227. In reply, Bell Park reeled in the total with three balls to spare, and although the highest individual score was 43 to Jamie Spiller, skipper Michael Lymer would have been pleased that the job wasn’t left to just a few, rather the entire line-up played their part in a solid team victory. It’s hard to pick a winner in this one, but Newcomb and District might just be slightly stronger at this stage. HIGHTON v Alexander Thomson, THOMSON v Modewarre, Geelong West v MARSHALL, ST ALBANS BREAKWATER v Guild Saints and TORQUAY v Manifold Heights.
FUND-RAISER: Competitors take off from Pirra Homestead at last year’s Lara Fun Run.
Serious or not, entrants urged to have fun on the run
BANKED: Piatara Barry with a brown trout from West Barwon Reservoir.
A Lara fun run with categories for children and adults being held next weekend, will raise money for local sports clubs fielding five or more entrants. Lara Fun Run, which includes a walking category, will include 5km and 10km distances through Serendip Sanctuary for competitors aged
from six to over 60. A ‘Kids Dash’ will also be on the schedule. The run and walk next weekend will be staged at Pirra Homestead on 30 October, with organisers expecting to attract almost 1000 participants. Competitor Ondrea Duncan described the fun run as a “great, enjoyable and family friendly
event, ranging from having elite level timing gates for serious athletes, to juice vans and magicians”. The organiser, PB Events, said the run would donate $10 for each junior to clubs with at least five juniors registered for the event. Registrations for Lara Fun Run, with the lure of prizes, are open at pbevents.com.au
Bartel, Cats ‘agreed’ on retirement but champion still has ‘more to give’ Geelong Football Club and Jimmy Bartel “have mutually agreed to the terms of the champion midfielder’s retirement“, according to the Cats. The club announced his departure on Wednesday after a stellar career that included three premierships, Brownlow and Norm Smith medals and a Jim Stynes award for community service over 15 seasons. Bartel was the fourth Geelong player to reach the 300 game milestone, playing in 213 victories across 305 games. “I wanted to take my time once the season finished before I made this decision,” Bartel said. “I am forever grateful to have been drafted by the Cats and I hope in some way to have repaid the faith that was shown in me all those years ago. “While I feel I still have more to give, I understand the bigger picture and respect the direction the club wants to move in. “So, therefore, I have decided the time is now right to retire from the game. “Over the past 15 years I have played out every dream I ever had and I leave the game satisfied that I have given everything I had in every game. 28 GEELONG INDY Friday, 21 October, 2016
“To have played with my home town club and to have shared in the success we have had has been an incredible experience. “I was very fortunate to have played with some amazing players but, even more importantly, better men, which always made the game fun. I always looked forward to coming into the club and will miss that. “However, I am excited to weigh up my options and to explore the next step. “There are so many people to thank. “First and foremost thanks goes to my and Nadia’s families, my mum and stepdad Rob, sisters Olivia and Emma. Nadia and Aston who have helped me enjoy the career I have had and grow into the person that I am today. “My close circle of mates whose loyalty and support have been unwavering. My teammates and staff at the club that have made footy enjoyable. “The great people at both Bell Park Football Club and the Falcons helped me along this journey. “And, of course, to the supporters that have
been there week in and week out. Some of my greatest memories will be of being on the outer wing and hearing you chant my name. “Sincerely, thank-you. You made me feel at home for 15 years. “I’m sure the club will continue to have success and look forward to bringing my family to Kardinia Park and seeing the many young players fulfil their potential in the coming years.” Geelong Cats coach Chris Scott paid tribute to Bartel. “Jimmy is the embodiment of what a footballer should be,” Scott said. “He was fearless, could play multiple roles for the good of the team and was adaptable in a changing game. “Jimmy will rightly go down as an icon of the Geelong Football Club and he has left a lasting mark on all those that he has played with over the past 15 seasons. “Jimmy was always prepared and, as history has shown, he was at his best in the biggest moments and the biggest games.”
GONE: Jimmy Bartel.
