Message from the Premier This summer is forecast to be a dangerous fire season. Fire Action Week is the time for all Victorians to begin preparing. Many communities throughout Victoria have been battling with persistent rain and rising flood waters. This rainfall has provided the stimulus for increased growth of vegetation in forested, bush and grass fire areas across the state. As summer intensifies, these regions will dry out quickly, increasing the risk of uncontrollable fires, especially over the Christmas and summer holiday period. Emergency services are working with communities, businesses, local councils and government to reduce the risk in your area, while

ensuring resources are in place to respond to all emergencies. However, it is up to you to understand the risk in your area, monitor conditions and take responsibility for your own safety and the safety of your household. Taking steps to get prepared before summer means you know what to do when a fire starts. Talk to your family and friends about how you’ll know when to leave and where to go to stay safe. Leaving early means leaving before a fire starts – not when you can see flames or smell smoke. Leaving early means avoiding panic, being trapped and making the wrong decisions that could be dire.

cially if you live in bush and grass fire prone areas. Taking the right steps now will help make your decisions in an emergency easier and clearer. The steps to take are simple… • Talk to your household and neighbours about what you’ll do on high risk days and have a plan if fire threatens you and your home this summer

Use Fire Action Week to prepare your home and property and think about summer fire safety, espe-

Be Fire Ready. THE REASONS ARE BLACK AND WHITE.

Fire Action Week The Right Time To Prepare

• Check Fire Danger Ratings daily at emergency.vic.gov.au to find out how dangerous a fire would be if one started and monitor warnings, especially when the Fire Danger Rating is Severe, Extreme or Code Red • Pack an emergency kit of essentials – including important

documents, a first aid kit, medications, blankets, water and a battery powered radio – and keep it handy Planning and preparing for fire is everyone’s responsibility. Make it yours this week and help keep your family and the community safe this summer. For more information on how to get prepared, go to emergency.vic.gov.au.

THE HON DANIEL ANDREWS MP Premier of Victoria

1. Plan what you’ll do in the event of a fire, talk to your household and know where to access information on high risk days. 2. Keep grass short. Fire can ignite and travel quickly through long grass. 3. Get rid of dry grass, leaves, twigs and loose bark around your home. 4. Remove or prune shrubs near windows and well away from branches of mature trees. 5. Cut back overhanging tree branches close to property – no branches within 10 metres. 6. Keep gutters and roof areas clear of leaf litter (if you are physically able to). 7. Remove all materials from around the home that could burn, such as boxes, furniture and woodpiles.

Wide range of pumps on offer

Check the ratings THIS summer, checking fire danger ratings to understand the daily fire risk is an important way to protect yourself and your family from fire. Fire danger ratings give you information on how dangerous a fire would be if one started. The ratings are based on the weather conditions and other factors, such as how much dry vegetation there is. Hot, dry, windy days are the worst weather conditions for fire. Ratings are forecast using Bureau of Meteorology data up to four days in advance, and are declared by fire weather district. The three most important ratings to look out for are severe, extreme and code red, although fires can still be dangerous on days when the ratings are lower. Code red days are the worst conditions for a grassfire or bushfire and means that if a fire was to start, it would be uncontrollable. Most houses are not designed or constructed to withstand code red conditions. Leaving high-risk areas the night before a code red day or early in the day is the safest option. A severe or extreme fire danger rating means that if a fire starts and takes hold, it will be unpredictable and fast-moving. If you live in a high-risk area, and your house is not prepared and you are not able to defend it, leaving early in the day, or the night before, is your safest option.

Fire Danger Rating signs broadcast the danger a fire would pose, if it were to start on that day - severe, extreme and code red warnings indicate that fires could be unpredictable or uncontrollable. Ratings are broadcast via signs in most towns, such as Coldstream’s illuminated FDR sign on the Maroondah Highway.

Check fire danger ratings at emergency.vic.gov.au, by downloading the FireReady app or by calling the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.

If you have a hearing or speech impairment, contact the Victorian Bushfire Information Line (VBIL) via the National Relay Service on 1800 555 677.

Memories of ashes By Jodie Symonds

People come in to explore the new interior. 157262 “The Cockatoo bushfires broke at about 7.30 (pm), and all CFA were committed elsewhere,” Mr Simpson said. “I’d been working during the day since six o’clock that morning and I ended up not getting some sort of sleep until 43 hours later.” Mr Simpson said the Ash Wednesday bushfires affected the community in more ways than one. He said the devastation of what oc-

curred on the day, didn’t hit him until about 12 weeks later. “At the time, I just didn’t think about it,” he said. “I was outside one day and then all of a sudden I just sat and bawled.” He said it was very emotional. “We have visitors who come and tell us their stories about where they were at the time,” Mr Simpson said. “It gives us the chance to educate others and for them to hear it from

someone who was there.” The building is now being used as an education centre for others to learn about a piece of history that devastated the community. “It’s a magnificent building - from where it was, to where it is now,” Mr Simpson said. “People have to come see it.” The Ash Wednesday Bushfire Education Centre is located on 10 McBride Street, Cockatoo.

THE Bushfire Education Centre at Marysville has officially opened and is the perfect opportunity for students to learn about bushfire safety. More than 100 people attended the event, on Saturday, 8 October. The centre was designed to be a resource for schools, to match their geography curriculum. The Education Centre features multiple displays of wrecked items from households, shops and things from around town. It provides education on issues relevant to bushfire prevention and safety, supporting community well-being and recovery effects, produces educational material, and raises awareness of bushfire education. At the event, there were a range of larger displays including a burnt-out truck. President of the Bushfire Education Foundation, Barry Thomas, said the centre was only open to schools, but would be opened to the public at a later date. “I think it will really benefit the community about how to better prepare for the bushfire season,” Mr Thomas said. “It will allow them to better understand. “Hopefully, it will prepare people, so they won’t make last-minute decisions on the day.” Numerous schools have visited the site, and learned about bushfires as part of hazards and disaster studies. IT WAS hot and windy, the perfect conditions for a bushfire. Former Cockatoo CFA Captain, Graham Simpson said the Ash Wednesday Bushfire Education Centre (AWBEC) was a great example of a community bonding together to save the sentimental building. Chairman of the AWBEC committee, Mr Simpson told the Mail that he often reflected on his involvement with the CFA on Ash Wednesday. Fire Action Week is not only a time where residents prepare for the upcoming season, but to also reflect on the lives lost and those rebuilding their communities. It’s an opportunity to talk to your family about what you would do if a fire emergency occurred. During the devastating Ash Wednesday Bushfires on 16 February 1983, the former kindergarten building was used for refuge from the blaze. Mr Simpson said the Cardinia Shire Council planned to demolish the carousel-shaped building in 2011. The hugely sentimental building where about 300 frightened people gathered was worth fighting for. After years of fighting for the building to stay, the centrepiece of the town was officially opened in July this year. “The town just rose up and basically said ‘No way,” he said. “I’ve been with it ever since.” He had finished his shift at the Cockatoo CFA and noticed smoke gathering in the air.

Season is set for intensity By Derek Schlennstedt DESPITE the second wettest September on record Victoria can expect an intense but late starting fire season. In early October more than 500 concerned individuals descended upon Box hill Lilydale Lakeside Campus to attend a Living with Bushfire conference that invited leading industry experts, including fire ecologists and community emergency groups to speak about the upcoming fire season. Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley said that although Victoria is experiencing above average rainfall people shouldn’t dismiss the possibility of a fire season. “When people talk about a fire season and you have so much rain around, people go, ‘we’re not going to have a fire season’, but we will,” Mr Lapsley said. “The forecast is clear that it will be more of a traditional summer fire season.” By ‘traditional’, Mr Lapsley means that unlike the previous year, which saw hotter temperatures in October, this summer will return to a normal seasonal pattern with the hottest temperatures expected in the months spanning December to February. As a result of the large amount of rainfall Victoria has received, grass growth will be more prevalent than previous years, and once the grass dries will increase bushfire fuel loads. “It will be a wet October, dry November and traditional summer, which means we’ll have growth in grass, that grass will dry and bushlands will dry out which will result in more fuel,” he said. To reduce these fuel loads, VicRoads will be undertaking a range of maintenance activities in the Yarra Valley to prepare for this year’s bushfire season. Maintenance activities will occur along Healesville-Kinglake Road in the Yarra Ranges, and Healesville - Koo-Wee-Rup Road in Cardinia.

Craig Lapsley addressed concerned residents about the upcoming fire season at the Living with Bushfire conference. 160849 The works will begin in early October and are expected to run until the end of the year. More than $550,000 will be spent on removing dangerous overhanging trees and reducing fuel loads alongside roads. This work will include fence-to-fence grass mowing on all rural arterial roads to reduce the large amounts of fuel generated by the wet winter, and to ease the risk of a fire spreading from road reserves to adjacent land. VicRoads Regional Director Aidan McGann said that inspections have taken place over winter

to determine the most at-risk areas in the region. “Our maintenance team works closely with Emergency Management Victoria, fire authorities and local councils to assess the areas of greatest risk and determine our priorities for maintenance works,” said Mr McGann. “Bushfires are unpredictable so we want to provide the safest environment possible for residents and road users as temperatures rise over coming months.” As VicRoads is reducing fuel loads alongside roads it is also important that individuals main-

tain their properties. Craig Lapsley is urging individuals to begin clearing and cleaning their properties in preparation for the beginning of summer. “Do it in November,” he said, “do it early, as you’ll get regrowth. “Don’t wait until it’s so thick that you can’t do it. If you do it early then you’ll be in a good spot when it comes to January. ” “We all need to do it together, the more people that clean up and do it early, the better off they’ll be when summer arrives,” he said.

They’re the trusted name in safety bunkers By Peter Douglas WILDFIRE Safety Bunkers Pty Ltd is committed to supplying and installing superior quality, fully engineered, government accredited, purpose-built bushfire bunkers. Wildfire bunkers are rated to the highest current Australian Standard (BAL-FZ), Bushfire Attack Level Flame Zone. Each year in Australia, the weather seems to become more unpredictable with higher than average winds and extreme temperatures. Forecasts from the Climate Institute of Australia and the CSIRO predict that Australia will experience an increasing

occurrence of wildfire events that threaten life and property. The fire season will start earlier and last longer and will be more intense throughout the season’s length. Residents who live in isolated areas of surrounding bushland are at high risk during the bushfire season and may wish to consider the installation of a bushfire shelter. When situations change and the time to execute your evacuation plan has been cut short, a Wildfire Safety Bunker could be a resident’s last option. Anthony Tratt, owner and managing director of Wildfire Safety Bunkers, said it could be a smart option.

“We have been in the bushfire shelter business for many years now and our products have been welcomed by residents Australia wide,” he said. “I believe the reasons our units have become so popular is that they have been extensively tested and accredited by the government, they can be installed in a short amount of time, they can be landscaped into existing garden beds and embankments, and they are at an affordable price point.” Wildfire has installed units in most areas where the ‘Mail’ newspapers are delivered. I’ve been doing that for the last six or seven years.”

Name: Phil Skiller Title: Captain How long have you been a member with the CFA? “35 years.” What got you involved? “I joined as soon as I moved, after getting married. I always enjoyed doing community stuff.” Why do you think fire prevention is necessary? “To save lives - without prevention, we would be in big trouble. If people don’t tidy up, if we have a big fire, it’ll be even bigger.” Do you have a hobby outside of the CFA? “I like being around my family.”

COCKATOO CFA Name: Julian Ketskemety Title: Captain How long have you been a member with the CFA? “I’ve been with the CFA for nearly 28 years.” What got you involved? “Basically when I moved from the suburbs of Malvern to Endeavour Hills I got involved.” Why do you think fire prevention is necessary? “It’s about the safety of your family and your animals. By clearing your property, your house may still be there after the fire.” Do you have a hobby outside of the CFA? “My wife and I like to travel in our caravan. We just got back from Darwin for six weeks. We don’t get to go as often as we would like, though. I like photography as well.”

BADGER CREEK CFA Name: Josh Martin Title: Captain How long have you been a member with the CFA? “I started in 2001 as a junior fire member and then became operational in 2005 with the Lilydale Fire Brigade. I then went to Mornington, then back to Badger Creek as a First Lieutenant. I’ve been the captain for the past two years.” What got you involved? “My parents are long-serving members of the CFA. It’s about giving something back to the community. I’m very passionate about what I do, and it’s a great atmosphere - you see parts of Australia not every person gets to see.” Why do you think fire prevention is necessary? “Fire prevention is definitely necessary, especially where we live. Fire is something that you can’t muck around

with. Be prepared, alert and up to date with fire warnings. It’s paramount to anyone that wants to live in a bush environment.” Do you have a hobby outside of the CFA? “I love spending time in the bush, especially in the four wheel drive.”

COLDSTREAM CFA Name: Sean Bethell Title: Captain How long have you been a member with the CFA? “34 years.” What got you involved? “My father and mother were both involved with the fire brigade. My father was captain of Coldstream CFA between 1983 to 2006.” Why do you think fire prevention is necessary? “It’s necessary to educate the public to do their best to prevent a fire in the upcoming season.” Do you have a hobby outside of the CFA? “Cricket. I gave it away for about 20 years but started it up again.”

YARRA GLEN CFA Name: Bill Boyd Title: Captain How long have you been a member with the CFA? “Over 25 years- nearly 30 years.” What got you involved? “When I moved into Yarra Glen I got involved, but I was a junior at Scoresby. You’re going to get big fire events.” Do you have a hobby outside of the CFA? “No because I don’t have any time, CFA it does take up a bit of time for me.”

HILLCREST CFA Name: Fiona Burns Title: Captain How long have you been a member with the CFA? “Over 13 years.” What got you involved? “I just wanted to do something to help the community, and CFA seemed a pretty good way to do that.” Why do you think fire prevention is necessary? “Individually, every household needs to take responsibility for their own fire prevention. It’s critical for their own safety. We can come out and put the fire out, but they can help by reducing fuel

on their properties. Fire prevention starts with the landholder, not the CFA.” Do you have a hobby outside of the CFA? “I enjoy bushwalking.”

HODDLES CREEK CFA Name: Jessica Worlley Title: Fire Fighter How long have you been a member with the CFA? “Seven years.” What got you involved? “Family history. My grandfather and dad were both fire fighters, we lived out in the bush so we had to understand it.” Why do you think fire prevention is necessary? “It’s necessary because the bush burns, and when you’re in the bush, you need to be aware of what it can do. Do you have a hobby outside of the CFA? “I like bush activities and four wheel driving.”

LEAVES IN YOUR GUTTERS? Protect your home against fire and flooding Install AllClear Leafguard made from Colorbond® Steel AllClear Leafguard can save householders all the hassles associated with leaves blocking gutters causing overflowing and flooding and also creating a fire hazard.

AllClear Leafguard is designed especially for the collection of clean water for rain water tanks. The best way to save our valuable water is to ensure gutters are free of leaves and other debris to stop any overflow and flooding issues. Gutters fitted with AllClear Leafguard are still able to be flushed and cleaned if necessary to ensure clean and hygienic tank water all year round.

Made from Colorbond® Steel AllClear Leafguard has many benefits, including protecting and prolonging the life of gutters. With AllClear Leafguard fitted on gutters gone are the days of spending hours of valuable weekend time up on a ladder cleaning gutters by hand. Keeping gutters clear of leaves prevents overflowing which causes water damage to the home and will ensure gutters last longer. AllClear Leafguard is secured under roof tiles or iron roof and to the front of the guttering. When the Leafguard is in place it cannot be seen from the ground, so it does not ruin the appearance of the roof. The threat of bushfires presents a pressing need for home owners to protect their properties as best they can especially over the summer months.

One of the ways home owners can be prepared is by ensuring their gutters are free of leaves and debris that could easily catch on fire and lead the flames to the body of the home. AllClear Leafguard is made of Colorbond® Steel – the same material as gutters – preventing the Leafguard melting in fire or perishing and becoming brittle. Leafguard helps prevent embers and burning leaves getting under the roofline. Homes in fire prone areas are always urged to get their gutters fitted with metal leafguards to protect against potential bush fire.

Australian made AllClear Leafguard has proved extremely successful over the years being recognized as the more superior Leafguard on the market in Victoria and most states in Australia. AllClear Leafguard can safely give purchases a 20 year warranty. AllClear Leafguard staff have been trained in all aspects of leaf and gutter protection to help bring this superior product to clients. Principal Cameron Heath said the rainy weather meant a “reshuffle” of the carnival day, but that the weather did little to dampen the enthusiasm of visitors - particularly children, who embraced the rides regardless of the rain. “They didn’t care - it was cold and wet, but the kids just wanted to be there, celebrating with each other and the teachers,” Mr Heath said. “It was like the kids had jumped into a pool, they were that wet - it was fantastic. “It didn’t matter, they just wanted to have fun.” He said the day was an informal reunion for past students, with a group of 15 people, all from the same year level, meeting up unexpectedly on the day to reminisce. “It sparked conversation and memories, which is what it was all about, really,” he said. Mr Heath said the students performed musical numbers in the school hall, followed by a band performance and the launch of a book documenting the school’s 15 decades. The book, sponsored by the Healesville Community Bank, features stories and photographs from the school’s history, written by former students, teachers and principals, as well as words from Mr Heath. That history came to life on the day, with guided tours around the school and many visitors coming to see photos from their time at the school. One of those visitors was Leola

Hull, who attended the school with her sisters, part of the French family, in the 1940s. Ms Hull, who lives in Wagga Wagga, said she had been away from the town for 54 years, and enjoyed revisiting the school with three of her four siblings. “We thoroughly enjoyed it - we talked about it and we found it very informative,” she said. “The only thing that spoiled it was the rain, but I was surprised about how many people were there, even with the rain.

“It was well worth it for all of us.” Healesville Community Bank director Kath Holton said the book, which would be given to each student at the school, was like a yearbook, but reaching back through the school’s 150 years. “The school’s played such a big role in the community for parents and families, and they’ve got a focus on being a part of their community and being invested in their community, and that’s the same ethos as the community bank,” she said. “It’s about community - it’s about

everyone supporting each other, so we all grow and foster a community.” Ms Holton said the day was a success, and said a highlight for her was the “gorgeous” concert put on by the students. “It was lovely to see them all singing and performing and playing instruments,” she said. She said that on her way out of the event, she saw a view that summed up the day - a child in one of the rides, in the middle of the rain, having fun. “There was a kid swinging in it,

upside down, inside out, in the pouring rain,” she said. “His mum was there, his friends were standing there, all drenched - that really epitomised what the day was about - soldiering on regardless, having fun, you know?” Mr Heath paid tribute to the work of the Healesville Primary School 150th committee and the event’s sponsors, who turned the idea of a celebration day into reality. Rewarding zoo keeper exchange By Jesse Graham A HEALESVILLE Sanctuary keeper on loan from San Diego will head home next month, after coming over for an exchange program in August. Ashley Roberts, 33, came to Healesville Sanctuary in late August, swapping places with a keeper as part of an exchange program with San Diego Zoo. Speaking to the Mail after starting on the job, Ms Roberts said the Healesville staff had “rolled out the red carpet”, and that she was working with the fighting extinction team with animals such as the helmeted honeyeater. “The staff here has been so great, in making sure that every opportunity that comes up, I get,” she said. “They’re doing a helmeted honeyeater release next week and they invited me to come along, so I could sort-of see the whole process.” Zoos Victoria and San Diego Zoo

have run keeper exchanges for several years, and Ms Roberts said she heard about it seven or eight years ago. “It was always something that I thought was super interesting, and I’d like to do that, and when Monica emailed and said ‘Hey, is anyone interested in switching with me?’, I was one of the people that put my name in the hat,” Ms Roberts said. She said the pint-sized honeyeaters were a change of pace to her usual work with large carnivores, such as lions. “That was kind of interesting when I got over here, because I don’t really work with birds back home - usually, I do large carnivores and hoof-stock,” Ms Roberts said. “(They’re) a little bit smaller, I feel like a little more fragile. “I put a lot of pressure on myself - you know, don’t mess it up - but it’s an amazing learning experience

IT WAS a rude awakening for a Lilydale resident on Sunday morning, when a driver in a stolen car crashed into the front of her house. At about 4.40am on Sunday, 23 October, a car travelling east along Beresford Road, Lilydale, hit a parked car, travelled over the nature strip, drove through two fences and into the front of a house. Police believe the car, a silver ute, was stolen, and the male driver fled the scene. The woman inside the property at the time of the crash was not injured. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash, the car or the driver is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential crime report to www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

A BADGER Creek man will face court next year after a break-in at Tokar Estate Winery earlier this month. The Mail reported last week that a burglar entered the Maddens Lane property at about 9.30pm on Saturday, 15 October, but was disturbed by the occupants of the property, who were home at the time. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Senior Constable Anthony Thomas said police charged a 43-year-old Badger Creek man with aggravated burlgary on Wednesday, 19 October. The man was bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 17 March, 2017.

POLICE are warning residents to be wary of travelling conmen and phony phone calls aimed at stealing money and personal information. Warburton Police Sergeant Tom Wilkinson said residents should be wary of travelling conmen, trades workers who go door-to-door offering services for cash-in hand. However, the workers either don’t start or complete the works or demand more money from the homeowners, leaving them out of pocket and without the promised works. Sgt Wilkinson said the conmen were “preying on the vulnerable”, and said anyone who got an unsolicited knock from a tradie should ask for identification and their details. “Most tradesmen will have some form and some process of actually establishing who they are, and they’re more than happy to provide that,” he said. “If you’re uncertain, you can ask them to leave the property, and if they persist in staying and persist in their demands, call police on triple-zero. “We’re more than happy to come past, just to check if everything’s okay.” Sgt Wilkinson said that residents should also be wary of calls from people claiming to be from the Australian Tax Office, Microsoft, Telstra or other major companies, asking for bank or personal details. He said the tax office and large companies did not cold-call, and that residents in doubt should ask for details of their caller and a number, then make sure the caller was from the company they were claiming to be from. “If in doubt, just say ‘No, thankyou”, and I think that’s probably the best option,” Sgt Wilkinson said. “We’re asking the public to really consider their safety, their well-being and don’t provide your details to these particular people.” For more details of scams, or to report a suspected scam, visit www.scamwatch.gov.au.

Robert Groiss and Mark Clue from Seville CFA will take on the Eureka Climb next month. Picture: CONTRIBUTED He said he had already signed up for the Eureka event before the Crown one, and was fund-raising for the latest climb after raising $1500 for the first. “We’re volunteers, anyway, so we like to do something that gives back, any chance we can,” he said. Money raised from the climb will go to Whitelion and Interplast Australia and New Zealand, which work with vulnerable youth and provide surgical treatment to people around the world, respectively. Mr Groiss said he and Mr Clue would be training with their gear on the Mount Donna

Buang fire tower, to get the experience of a stair climb before the event got underway. Warburton firefighter Thomas Wilson and Toolangi CFA’s Dawn Hartog will also be taking part in the event. The event is open to the general public aged 12 and over, with a special category for firefighters wanting to do the climb in their gear. Participants can take part in a timed race, or an un-timed climb. For more information, or to sign up, visit www.eurekaclimb.com.au

Dodgeball fund-raiser is wonderfully ‘hit and miss’ By Jesse Graham HEALESVILLE High School students will be using their passion to raise money for the Make a Wish Foundation next month, organising a dodgeball tournament with primary school students. Zach Kennedy and Kobe Thorsen will be organising a tournament at Healesville Primary School, pitting students against each other for a friendly match and a good cause. The two Year 9 students said they had gathered interest from

more than 60 students from Grades 5 and 6, and would be speaking to other students to get others involved. Both Kobe and Zach said they knew people who had been sick in the past, and had their wishes granted by the organisation, and wanted to raise $1000 through the event. “We had a friend who had leukaemia and he was in hospital for most of primary school, and his one wish was to go to America and visit Legoland and Disneyland and stuff, and Make a Wish made that come

true,” Kobe said. The pair had approached businesses in Healesville and received donations of prizes for the students, such as 10 movie tickets for The Memo and lollies from the Healesville Candy Emporium. The students taking part in the tournament pay a gold coin for their entry, and will be able to make further donations on the day. Anyone wanting to contribute to the fund-raiser can call Healesville High School on 5962 4088.

RUNNING up 88 levels of stairs is a feat on its own - doing it wearing more than 25 kilograms of firefighting gear is a whole new level. But firefighters from around the valley will be taking on the challenge next month, as part of the annual Eureka Climb, raising money for charity. Seville firefighters Robert Groiss and Mark Clue will be taking on the climb on Sunday, 13 November, climbing up the Eureka tower’s 1642 stairs wearing full firefighting kit, including a breathing apparatus. Mr Groiss said he had been preparing for the climb by running between seven and 10 kilometres most days, and would soon be moving up to training in the firefighting gear, which weighs more than 25 kilograms. “The gear is obviously quite heavy, but it’s more about managing your breathing and not overheating, because the gear does not breathe one bit,” he said. “I mean, you’ve got to push yourself, but not push yourself too hard that you overdo it and collapse.” He said that he hadn’t completed the Eureka Climb before, but had recently completed the Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb at the Crown Metropol Hotel.

By Jesse Graham VISITORS to Marysville will be able to taste the second-best tap water in the world when they bring a re-fillable water bottle to town, after the town received a silver award on Wednesday, 19 October. The award for Ixom’s Best Tap Water in Victoria and Australia from 2015 and a silver medal from the 2016 Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting was handed to Murrindindi Shire Council representatives on Wednesday, at the town’s Water Week Festival. The festival was held by Goulburn Valley Water, Ixom and the Water Industry Operators Association Australia (WIOA) to celebrate National Water Week. Primary school students from Marysville and Buxton and visitors were able to taste five samples of water from five states as part of Ixom’s Best Tap Water in Australia competition, and cast their vote for the best. WIOA Chief Operations Officer Craig Mathisen said the event came about because of Marysville’s Australia-wide win in the 2015 competition. The taste testing was accompanied by information stalls and flyers about the importance of drinking water, giveaways of re-fillable water bottles and the official unveiling of Goulburn Valley Water’s water refill station. Mr Mathisen said he hoped visitors and students would get a better understanding of tap water from the festival. “It’s nice for them to be involved in getting an understanding about water and the source of water - you turn on the tap and it doesn’t just

Centre ambassador Chris Muir told the Mail that the water refill station was part of a plan to get bottled water out of the town, and to encourage people to choose tap water. “We’ve had a bit of a discussion with some of the restaurants and cafes and said ‘How would you feel about moving over to not selling bottled water anymore, but selling refillable bottles that people then would come and refill themselves?’,” he said. “We’ve had bubblers around town for some time, but we can really concentrate on saying ‘Don’t buy water, fill up your bottle’, and not

OVER 150 homes are within 50m of the proposed expansion of the Yellingbo Conservation Area. Proposed revegetated bushland corridors, many over 100m wide along the Yarra River upstream of Woori Yallock, pose a heightened bushfire threat to the many towns of Upper Yarra Valley Region. I wish to express support for the Yarra Ranges Council motion of 13 September, calling on the Victorian Government to roll back the boundary of the YCA to the 2011 listed boundary. Geoff Cochrane, Yarra Junction.

I WOULD like to bring to your attention a dangerous bushfire risk that is developing in the Upper Yarra Valley. The ‘Yellingbo Conservation Area’ is proposing to have the river frontage area fenced off and revegetated, up to 100m wide along the Yarra River and major tributaries. These heavily vegetated areas create a fire wick travelling up the valley, linking up to the natural bush in Millgrove and Warburton, not to mention numerous houses on the way, including mine, which is just a few meters from the river frontage. The Shire of Yarra Ranges voted ‘not’ to sup-

port the wider area and to roll back to the 2011 proposed area that didn’t go past Woori Yallock. Ian Barber, Wesburn.

Fear of fire I AM increasingly concerned about the intended implementation of the Yellingbo Conservation Area and the proposed revegetated bushland corridors along our waterways upstream of Woori Yallock. Many of these corridors are over 100 metres wide. We already live with the fear of bushfires and these plantings will only serve to increase the bushfire risk to the many towns of the Upper

Pages from the past Healesville Guardian, 24 October 1936 Badger Creek Tree Turmoil Mr Eadie concludes in a poetic outburst in the following letter to the Editor Sir - The official explanation or reason given in ‘The Age’ of last Saturday in the area adjoining the sanctuary may give satisfaction or consolation to a few people. It does not, however alter the position as it is known to us who have closely investigated the wanton destruction that has taken place. The excuse for felling the trees is that they were affected by ‘heart rot and dry spike’. If that definition is intended to apply to the trees which have been destroyed, there is only one answer and that is complete denial. School Teacher Honoured A farewell and presentation social was tendered to Miss D. McEwan by the parents and children of the Badger Creek school on Friday of last week.

Miss McEwan, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs T. McEwan ‘Greenville’, Healesville and a teacher at the Badger Creek School for the last nine years, whose marriage to Mr. J. Clyne, only son of Mr W. Clyne ‘Thurso’, Healesville was celebrated some time ago. She is giving up her school duties for home duties. Upper Yarra Mail, 27 October 1994 Rival Shires Ignored The Local Government Board released its interim report last Friday on the amalgamation of a number of middle and outer Melbourne Councils. In recommending a new Shire of Yarra Ranges, the board ignored the views and recommendations of the Shires of Healesville, Sherbrooke and the Upper Yarra Valley and recommended the constitution of a new municipality to be called the Shire of Yarra Ranges. The proposed shire will have a population of 147,000 people,

An open letter to the community On Sunday 9 October, our electricity distribution network in the Dandenong Ranges and Upper Yarra Valley experienced its worst storm event in eight years. Gale-force winds blew trees and branches across our powerlines, resulting in more than 1,700 individual faults and cutting supply to more than 65,000 customers from Kinglake to Berwick. I would like to apologise to customers who were inconvenienced by the extended power outages last week, recognising the importance of electricity in all our lives. Severe storms are a natural event and we did all we could to restore supplies as quickly as possible. On behalf of all my colleagues at AusNet Services, I’d also like to express our thanks for your patience and understanding as we restored power. Throughout the recovery period, we worked around the clock as safely and as quickly as we could to restore power. To do this, 300 field staff from AusNet Services and our delivery partners, many living away from home all week, were supported by our Emergency Response Teams, the State Emergency Services, the Police and a range of welfare and support agencies. I would like to acknowledge and thank them all for their assistance in helping Victorian communities overcome the impact of the wind storm. Despite these combined efforts, it took until the end of the week to get every last customer back on supply. We recognise that many customers went without power for prolonged periods, and we understand the inconvenience and uncertainty you experienced. We know that while we did some things well, there are opportunities for improvement in our processes. I want to assure you that we are already analysing our efforts, and your feedback, to make sure we identify and implement these improvements. Again, thank you for your understanding and support through this challenging time. Yours sincerely

OPEN AND WELCOMING THE open space of the living area and the soaring cathedral ceilings is a wow factor as soon as you walk into this very unique and welcoming home. The walls, floorboards and ceilings are all timber for no maintenance, rather than low maintenance. The timber staircase is sturdy and strong and leads to the main bedroom which is massive, along with a walk-in wardrobe and

full ensuite. There is a study on this level as well. Back downstairs again is the country kitchen with heaps of cupboards, and overlooking the dining and living area. The wood heater heats this area up beautifully and also heats upstairs as well. The two bedrooms on this downstairs level are generous in size and both have built-in wardrobes. Near the bedrooms is the

downstairs bathroom and laundry. Out through the laundry is the gorgeous spacious decking and the brick-paved courtyard. Being a flat block of about a third of an acre, this property is perfect for children to run and play, or retirees pottering around the garden, and enjoying the peace and quiet of this area.

THE team at Maroondah Panel Service has been in the panel-beating business in Healesville for over 10 years. During that time, they have developed a fine reputation for their quality work and friendly, professional customer service. Their aim is to ensure all the cars, vans and trucks that arrive in their workshop are restored to their original condition. Shane from Maroondah Panel Service said repairing a damaged vehicle could be a labourintensive process. While there are many handy guides online about repairing a dent or a bingle yourself, in reality it’s not a job for amateurs - especially if you’re aiming for a perfect finish. Remember, the resale value of your car depends on it looking as good as possible. So even if you save a few dollars, in the end it could cost you getting a top price. Shane said it was important to have a professional tend to the job. “It takes a long time to learn how to panel beat properly,” he said. After finishing trade school, Shane got an apprenticeship and has been a panel beater for 25 years. Shane said if you were working on an older car, or you wanted to cut costs after a crash, knowing a bit about panel beating could be useful, but did not bring you up to the standard of a professional. He said that was because to work at anything like a professional panel beater, you literally need years of experience. Panel beaters use numerous techniques to remove dents and shape panels to match the original contours of the vehicle, before smoothing, resurfacing and spray painting the damaged areas. An expert panel beater will make a damaged car look like new. Maroondah Panels is located at 212 Maroondah Highway, Healesville. Enquiries to (03) 5962 5040.

Science comes to the hills By Jesse Graham QUESTACON has come to the Yarra Ranges, with science displays filling the rooms of Lilydale’s Yarra Ranges Regional Museum from 29 October. The Science on the Move travelling exhibition, created by Canberra’s Questacon, the National Science and Technology Centre, will open in Lilydale on Saturday, 29 October. Children and their families will be able to use 23 handson exhibits and activities at the exhibition, and Yarra Ranges

Council CEO Glenn Patterson said though the exhibition was for children aged 8-14, there would be attractions for young and old. Visitors will be able to turn themselves into a battery, create a tornado in a bottle and escape from handcuffs, with electricity, magnetism and human senses explored with interactive activities and puzzles. “We are really excited to host the Science on the Move exhibition and we look forward to seeing the community enjoy all of the activities on offer,” Mr

Patterson said. “We’re bringing science to the east.” The museum will also host Seeing Stars, an astrophotography exhibition presented in partnership with Mount Burnett Observatory. The museum is open 10am4pm every day, except public holidays, and entry is free. For more information, visit the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum at 35-37 Castella Street, Lilydale, call 9294 6313 or email museum@yarraranges. vic.gov.au.

The big G is back - again

Dylan’s day By Jesse Graham AFTER the recent announcement that he was the recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature, it’s fair to say that it’s been a big year for Bob Dylan. But marking one year since its first show in the Yarra Valley, presenting the life and music of Dylan in a show that’s part cover and part history, it’s also been a big year for DYLANesque. The band’s frontman, Healesville’s Jeff Jenkins, said that he first heard the news of Dylan’s Nobel Prize when visiting his partner’s parents in England for their 50th wedding anniversary. “There’d been murmurings that Bob was in consideration, maybe not last year but the year before, and it’d been sort-of on my radar,” Mr Jenkins said. “From my point of view, I just thought ‘about time, how fantastic’.” Though he said that he didn’t become a fan of Dylan’s music until he was in his 50s, Mr Jenkins said he quickly saw the “cleverness” in the singer’s lyrics “In Shakespearian work, they have the iambic pentam-

eter ... and Bob, his phrasing to me is almost like iambic pentameter,” he said. “For instance, we’ve got, ‘To be or not to be, that is the question,’ - that is the flow. “In Bob’s music, it’s the same - ‘Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people, they’re drinkin’, thinkin’ that they got it made.” Considering the musician’s colossal back-catalogue of music, asking what Dylan song is his favourite is an impossible question for Mr Jenkins though he said Tangled Up and Like a Rolling Stone were good examples of his lyrical prowess. “It’s such a hard question to answer because in my show we do about 35 of Bob’s songs, and they are probably what we consider the really popular part of his catalogue, and there’s another 400 songs we don’t even get close to doing,” he said. “Like a Rolling Stone, he called this a long, sort-of expression of vomit - he’s just so angry at this person he’s writing a song about, but the lyrics have just got such power in them. “’When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose’, - that is now part of normal English-

speaking vernacular, and I think that’s one of the things that we need to really reflect on. “There’s only a few people, a few writers in the world that have written lines that have become part of English usage.” One year on from the band’s first concert at a Yarra Valley winery, Mr Jenkins said DYLANesque had played 10 shows around the Valley and closer to the city, including at Richmond’s Corner Hotel. The show itself tells the story of Dylan’s career, including the places he was living and people he was with during his big moments - and talking about the hits he wrote that became classics for other musicians, like Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door. Mr Jenkins said DYLANesque would return to Healesville’s Memo Hall on Saturday 3 December for the band’s third show at the venue, with the first two selling out quickly. The show begins at 8pm and entry is $25, or $22.50 for concession holders. Shin Godzilla (M) Starring: Hiroki Hasegawa, Yukata Takenouchi and Satomi Ishihara By Seth Lukas Hynes SHIN Godzilla is the 29th Godzilla film by Toho Studios, and is an exceptional rebirth for the franchise. A gigantic, rapidly-mutating monster emerges from the ocean to rampage through Tokyo. Shin Godzilla is a poignant, thrilling and stylish monster movie that far outclasses Gareth Edwards’s 2014 American Godzilla film. In a film that returns to the

franchise’s dark roots, Godzilla is a deformed, terrifying creature - this time brought to life with animatronics and solid motion-capture CGI instead of the traditional rubber suits - and the battle scenes are jaw-droppingly cool and highly creative. The human characters are simple but well-defined, with clear objectives in a steadilypaced plot. The film has some effective moments of humour, satirising hawkish military leaders, geopolitical influence and Japan’s notoriously bureaucratic, slow-to-act government, while still maintaining a dire tone.

croydon

The film’s directors, Shinji Higuchi and Hideako Anno (the creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion), drew inspiration from recent tragedies such as the Tohoku tsunami and the Fukushima nuclear meltdown, making this film a raw, sombre experience for many Japanese audiences. Shin Godzilla is not only a great Godzilla movie, but an excellent film in its own right. Shin Godzilla is having a two-week theatrical run in a handful of Victorian cinemas, ending on October 27.

Tigers too good for Bloods By Chris Anderson YVCA POOR weather entering the weekend frustrated cricketers around the Yarra Valley as Saturday’s action was called off early due to heavy rain falls. Fortunately for cricketers in the competition’s premier grade, DJ Strachan Shield, the skies cleared on Sunday to ensure a full day’s play for Round 3 One Day fixtures. Woori Yallock took the honours over Healesville in the grand final rematch. In a game that looked more comfortable than it was, the Tigers were able to outlast the Bloods on the back of an impressive solo performance from brilliant all-rounder Simon Young. Batting first, Healesville found themselves in early trouble as Young toppled the openers. Then, an unnecessary run-out of the reliable Aaron Violi had the visitors rushing for their batting gear as they crashed to 3/1 inside the first four overs of the day. Scott (52) and Ash (43) Hamer joined forces, and the experienced pair did their best to repair the early damage. In a well-constructed partnership, the pair weren’t just locked into a dour rebuild of the innings as their open stroke play moved the score to a strong 3/79 at the halfway mark of the innings. Unfortunately for the Bloods, captain Ash Hamer fell upon the resumption of play, and the innings failed to kick on from the strong position, as the continual fall of wickets cost the visitors scoring momentum. Young led the bowlers from start to finish with impressive figures of 5/22, while the rest of the Tigers bowlers offered valuable support. Early wickets to Matt Peck ensured Healesville would keep the home team in check. With economical support from his fellow opener, Dermott Fry, the Tigers had to be content on taking their time in the chase.

Woori Yallock captain, Ryan Smith (35), proved valuable at the top of the order, keeping his team intact and avoiding an early collapse. Ash Hamer (3/27) injected himself into the bowling attack with his team needing wickets and he had immediate success. Three wickets in an impressive spell had the visitors poised to fight this game out to the last ball. When he managed to catch the edge of Smith’s bat, the score was teetering at 5/85 with just nine overs to go. Enter Simon Young. As the Bloods had a look at the Woori Yallock tail, Young produced a brutal assault on the bowling that saw the home side score the remaining 38 runs in the space of four overs to eliminate all jitters. Woori Yallock remain undefeated and have started their quest for the three-peat in style against strong opposition. The Tigers travel to Yarra Glen next round in a clash that could show their early intentions. On the other hand, Healesville are now in some urgency to secure their first win as they host Warburton-Millgrove in a tough prospect to break their duck. Yarra Junction showed Yarra Glen the steps they need to make if they want to be competitive in the top grade. Yarra Junction batted first and produced a quality team innings to post an impressive 8/172 off their allotted overs. Recruit Troy Hancock (43) provided the backbone of the top order as contributions throughout the innings ensured the scoreboard continued to tick over. Matt Hammond’s knock over the concluding overs proved valuable, with his unbeaten innings of 48 crucial in the final total. Yarra Glen were best served by Cameron Laycock (4/17) and James Glen (3/21) who did their

best to keep the total in check. With little known about Yarra Glen’s line up, there is a chance that they could surprise teams this year. But it wasn’t going to be the day as Yarra Junction’s slow bowlers made short work of the home team’s middle to lower order. Nick Lawlor and captain Quinton Hodgkinson took key early wickets to which Yarra Glen struggled to rebuild from. James Glen (34) proved hard to budge at the top of the order but the innings lacked a significant partnership it needed if the home side were to chase the runs. In the end, Cameron Spaulding was the wrecker as his miserly spinners were difficult for the home team to handle, and with 5/12 he proved the matchwinner. Kevin Bomford proved to be a valuable support act with 2/9. Bitterly disappointed to miss finals action last season, Yarra Junction’s undefeated start to the season has them well poised to establish themselves in the top four early in the season. Their Round 4 clash against Mount Evelyn could prove crucial in that battle for finals positions, even this early in the season. Yarra Glen have to back up quickly against the best in the business, Woori Yallock, and will be keen to not only prove themselves among the big boys, but to continue to learn what it takes to be successful in the top grade. Warburton-Millgrove bounced back from their Round 2 loss to Woori Yallock with a brutal display against Seville. With the game moved to Wesburn due to ground conditions, home ground advantage was taken from the Burras, however, they quickly looked at home. Seville batted first and were simply outclassed. Failing to put up any real resistance against a quality attack, the Blues were swept aside for a

Ahletics gets a wet day out By Jamie Strudley WEEK 3 of the track and field season was dominated by atrocious weather conditions. Little athletics was cancelled on Saturday morning as heavy rain, hail and strong winds swarmed over Morrison Reserve. The senior athletes travelled to Aberfeldie for Round 3 of the AV Shield.

Conditions were poor but the competition started but then cancelled after a few events. Several Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes got in an event or two before the meeting was cancelled to a chorus of cheers from athletes and officials. Next weekend little athletics is on Friday from 5.30pm to allow families to enjoy the long weekend. The senior team will be compet-

ing at Nunawading on Saturday afternoon; the last chance for many of the club’s school athletes to compete before Victorian All Schools Championships the following weekend. disappointing 65. The Burras would’ve been pleased with the contribution from Jake Neale (3/17) who proved that Warburton-Millgrove won’t just rely on their experienced campaigners this season, while Dan Lever was at his effective best with commanding figures of 4/16. The Blues did their best to offer some resistance with the ball taking three wickets. However, Burra’s opener Ben Lever (35) ensured this low target would be reached with relative ease. Warburton-Millgrove now travel to Healesville in an intriguing match-up between two sides which featured at the pointy end of last season. A win is crucial for both teams. Seville, on the other hand, now have a couple of weeks to regroup, and spend some more time on the track fine tuning their skills for their next outing. DJ Strachan Shield Yarra Junction 8/172 (T. WARBURTON GOLF WEDNESDAY THE winner on the day, in a welcome return to form, was Tex Van Der Kooi with 37 points. The runner-up, on a countback was John Hall with 36. The balls went down to 33, also on a countback. NTPs went to Andrew McMath (9th), David Murch (10th) and Ken Barratt (12th). Also, the popular Mick McGrann ‘Bag-Day’ final was played. Only five monthly winners played off for the title. Andrew McMath won by four strokes, with a fine nett 69 (well done, Andy!). There was a threeway tie for runner-up, all scoring 73s; Mario De Vincentis, John Hall and Ron Hottes. TWILIGHT With a stunning 23 points, Eric Slater made a triumphant return to the club, after a three-month hiatus ‘up north’. The runner-up, some five points behind, was David Clinch on 18. The ball rundown extended to 16. NTPs went to Hatty (3rd), John Hall (7th) and Ossie (9th). SATURDAY Stableford: Twenty ‘hardy souls’ ventured out in somewhat inclement weather to battle against the elements and a sodden course! Unbelievably, 11 finished. Danny Fox, who loves ‘a wet track’, had an incredible 39 points. Tim Blanche accrued 37. Understandably, the balls went down to 32. NTPs were ‘few and far between!’ Peter Fox snared one on the 3rd and ‘Happy’ Gilmore scored one on the 9th. The Medal of Medallists playoff, scheduled for last Saturday, was not completed, for obvious reasons! It will be played at a later date to be decided by the match committee.

Bowlers celebrate 125th By Jesse Graham HEALESVILLE BOWLS PAST and present members of Healesville’s Bowls Club gathered last month to mark a milestone 125 years for the club, with special guests coming to celebrate the day. Visitors packed the rooms of the Healesville Bowling Club on Sunday, 25 September, to celebrate the club’s 125th birthday. The club’s 125th Steering Committee member, Faye Mays, said that Bowls Victoria president

John Fisher presented a plaque to the club, and badges were presented to Veterans and Super Veterans, people who had turned 70 and 80, respectively. She said president, Adrian Beales, presented an “extensive” history of the club during his speech. “It blew my mind away, to be quite honest,” she said. “It was just amazing, some of the things that he was able to bring to the fore that happened years

ago.” Mr Beales said that on 7 June, 1981, 13 men attended a meeting at Daly’s Hall, where the Healesville Jeweller stands today, to discuss the formation of a club, and by the 27 June, 22 members had signed up to the newly formed club. Eildon MP Cindy McLeish and Yarra Ranges Councillor Fiona McAllister were present at the event, and Ms Mays said that special bottles of wine and cloths were made for the event.

“The day went very well,” she said. “It was very hectic to start with, (but) I thoroughly enjoyed it. “It was a lovely day and everyone went home with smiles and very happy.” She said that people travelled from as far as Queensland to celebrate the birthday, and Eastern Ranges Bowls President Ray McDonald used the occasion to declare the 2016/’17 bowls season open.

Great weather for ducks YARRA JUNCTION BOWLS YARRA Junction Bowling Club’s midweek pennant team had a bye this week as their scheduled opponents had withdrawn from the competition. Meanwhile, the Saturday pennant match at Yarra Junction between Yarra Junction and Lilydale was officially a ‘washout’ before the start. Heavy and regular rain showers left the green looking more like a duck pond and neither side was equipped with flotation devices. Hopefully next week’s weather will be kinder.

Motoring Look out for older walkers MOST of us drive to get around, but every trip involves a walk. And, for older people, walking may be their main form of transport. So it’s important we look out for people on the street, especially seniors. Victoria Walks, which is funded by VicHealth, commissioned the report Safer Road Design for Older Pedestri-

ans with the support of a TAC Community Road Safety Grant. It found 39 per cent of people who die while walking on our roads are aged 65 and over, yet this age group is only 15 per cent of the population. The research showed that drivers should have given way in at least 72 per cent of crashes involving older

pedestrians at traffic lights and 42 per cent of crashes at other intersections. Very disturbing is the number of older people being hit on footpaths, precisely where they should feel safest when walking. At least 16 per cent of crashes involving older pedestrians occur while they cross over driveways or entrances

to car parks. Victoria Walks is appealing to all drivers and riders to take greater care and watch out for elderly walkers in particular. We ask drivers to go slowly in and out of driveways so they can give way to people on the footpath. And please give way to people

crossing the road when you are turning. It’s not only the considerate thing to do, it is a legal requirement. As drivers, we need to take care of walkers, especially older people because when they are hit, even at slow speeds, many never fully recover. Dr Ben Rossiter Executive Officer, Victoria Walks

Roads are ‘disintegrating’: McLeish

More resources should go into roads, according to Cindy McLeish. 160813

1187559-RC24-15

EILDON MP Cindy McLeish has launched the first stage in a campaign to fix local roads throughout the Yarra Ranges, Murrindindi and Mansfield shires. In the process, she slammed the Victorian Government’s lack of investment in rural and regional roads, saying that roads throughout the state were disintegrating. So far, Ms McLeish said she has received more than 50 submissions from local residents about the most dangerous roads throughout these regions. “These are on top of the many letters, phone calls and emails my office received from locals pleading for our roads to be fixed,” she said. Ms McLeish said all submissions received would be raised directly with the Minister for Roads, or, if the complaint was in regard to a council road, she would raise the hazard with the relevant council. Also, motorists can help by reporting road hazards directly to VicRoads. “The VicRoads website allows motorists to directly report a road issue,” she said. “The more voices there are to complain about local road safety, the greater the chance of having something done sooner than later.” Ms McLeish said the Victorian Government had cut 10 per cent from the road asset management budget while scrapping the Coalition’s $160 million Country Roads and Bridges program “Daniel Andrews’ last budget shows that state taxes have jumped by $3.7 billion or 20.7 per cent in just two years,” she said. “But, despite this record tax increase, nothing has been done to make any meaningful improvement to country roads.”

Safe travel for children KIDSAFE has developed a guide to keep children as safe as possible while travelling in motor vehicles. The Child Restraint Extended Consumer Guide aims to provide parents, carers and road safety practitioners with clear advice on optimal use of child restraints and seat belts by children aged 0-16 year olds, when travelling in motor vehicles, to minimise their risk of injury in the event of a crash. There are a number of different child restraints including rearward facing, forward facing, booster seats, convertible restraints, lap sash seat belt and lap only seat belt. In the guide, KidSafe mentions the safest restraint type for children of different sizes, the safest seating position for children within a passenger vehicle, and the safest way in which a child restraint or seat belt is installed or used. For all ages, the guide said the use of any restraint was preferable to not using a restraint, to never restrain two or more people in a single restraint, and to consider whether the restraint you intend to purchase would accommodate your child for the full duration that they are recommended to use it. It said the minimum legal requirement was that every person in the vehicle must have their own seat and their own restraint, and it was against the law to share seat belts, or sit on another person’s lap. KidSafe also provided a “5-step test” to assess if a child is ready to move from a booster to an adult seat belt. The test has five questions some including if the child can sit all the way back against the vehicle seat back and if the child’s knees bend comfortably in front of the front edge of the vehicle seat.
