Sponsors, volunteers, P&C members, past students and some of the Year 6 cohort celebrate at the Kin Kin State School centenary last Saturday.

Party of the century FINDING more than 500 students and staff at school on a Saturday is a rare sight, but the Kin Kin State School’s 100th birthday brought past and present students from far and wide to celebrate the milestone. Principal Trent Shaw said the day on Saturday 22 October was all about sharing a yarn and reliving days spent at Kin Kin’s four schools, while P and C president Anita Poteri said it was amazing to see everyone’s long-standing connection with the hinterland township. The Kin Kin State School started in the Hall of Arts in 1916 before moving to the school building that

still stands today in 1921. It was once one of four schools in the Kin Kin district. Kin Kin Junction School’s oldest student Iris Collett who was a student in 1940, attended the celebrations with her sisters, including Heather. One of nine children in her family, Heather attended the Junction School in 1948, and recalled how she rode her black pony to school every day. Invariably, she would often arrive just as the bell was ringing because she would get caught up milking the cows in the dairy before school. “It’s very good to be back in Kin Kin,” Heather said. “A lot has changed but it’s great to be back.”

MEET YOUR

Today, there are 67 students at Kin Kin State School, who all came together in a heart-warming display of school spirit by singing a special song to those gathered to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the school. Students and teachers sang the national anthem along with musicians Hat Fitz and Cara Robinson, while the school’s kitchen sold baked goods and event-goers browsed photos from as far back as the early 1900s. The contents of the time capsule were dug-up by Mr Shaw on Tuesday 18 October, the official 100-year birthday of the school. Continued on page 2

Four schools in boom time DID you know the Kin Kin State School is actually one of four schools that were originally operating in Kin Kin during the time when the town was home to booming industries such as dairy and timber? At the peak, there were four schools; Kin Kin Junction State School, Kin Kin Township School, Moran Group State School and Wahpunga State School. But improvements in transport and roads, plus a decline in student numbers led to the closure of the three other schools, leaving what is now Kin Kin State School as the only operating school in Kin Kin. The Years 2 and 3 students at Kin

Kin State School, along with their teacher Mr Blackmore, made model replicas of the four schools to be auctioned at the 100-year celebrations, but the Kin Kin Community Group bought all four for $500 to donate to the school to use for future displays. Kin Kin Junction State School opened from 26 May 1909 and closed 18 August 1981. It was the first to open in the area, but closed in 1981 due to declining student numbers. The school building was relocated to the Kin Kin sports grounds and the original school site is now an arboretum; a living collection of woody plants intended for scientific study.

known as the Moran Group Provisional School, the school was proclaimed as a state school on 1 September 1914 after an increase in enrolments led to the construction of a permanent school building in 1913. Declining student numbers in the 1950s along with improvements to infrastructure and transport led to the school’s closure in 1952. Wahpunga State School opened 15 August 1910 and closed 31 December 1967. The Wahpunga State School was a one-teacher school for the duration of its operation. Declining student numbers and improved roads led to

current district primary school. The Kin Kin Provisional School was opened in 1916 to service a growing number of the town’s children and despite initial reservations about the need for another school, it was expected the growth of the town would dictate the need for another school. Originally started in the Hall of Arts, in 1921 the school moved to what is now the Kin Kin State School and was called the Kin Kin Township School. its closure in 1967 with the school building then relocated to Ernest Street in Tewantin and the original school site turned into a park.

Party of the century From front page Special guests on the day included Tom and Lyn Grady. Mr Grady’s family moved to Kin Kin more than 100 years ago as dairy farmers and Mr Grady, who was one of 14 children, attended Kin Kin Junction School until 1959. Mr Shaw said it was with thanks to Mr Grady that since 2010 the school had held bi-annual reunions for all past students and teachers. A long list of local businesses also supported the day including the Cooroy and Pomona branches of Bendigo Bank, who sponsored the event and were delighted to attend on the day. Manager Geoff Edwards was there along with staff member Karl Doss who works at the Cooroy and Pomona branches. Karl was a student at Kin Kin State School along with his siblings, and said he was chuffed to attend the celebrations.

Mr Elmes said he looked forward to a bright future for the hospice team but said it was time the Sunshine Hospice showed support for the terminally ill by releasing all the equipment they currently had in storage to the new Katie Rose Cottage. “I know we’ve moved on from the association with the old hospice, but there is a storage shed somewhere and in that storage shed are beds, furniture and mowers that have been donated by the Noosa community to help terminally ill people. Not the Sunshine Hospice, not Katie Rose either. It’s all been donated to help terminally ill people,” he said. “If Sunshine Hospice gets their private hospital accreditation, that’s great. But it’s not going to happen next month or the month after. Having all that equipment sitting in a storage facility degrading when they could be put to use here is disgusting. I’m calling on them, as an act of good faith, and it will be their first act of good faith, to donate that equipment to Katie Rose Cottage so the operations can get underway.”

Minister for Education Kate Jones has said she will continue to put pressure on the NDIA to deliver certainty to Queensland families.

Clash of words over disability services By Jolene Ogle Highview - a new home for the dying as Katie Rose Cottage secures a lease on a new premises.

Patients staying at the new Katie Rose Cottage can enjoy beautiful, calming views over the Noosa hinterland.

Standoff on hospice equipment SUNSHINE Hospice chair Frank Lewins has fired back at Member for Noosa Glen Elmes’ call for the hospice equipment to be donated to the new Katie Rose Cottage. In an email to Mr Elmes, Mr

Lewins said the board would not “return” the equipment to the Katie Rose Cottage. “It won’t happen because it would be illegal. As a company limited by guarantee, the board has a legal responsibility to protect

the company’s assets,” he said. Mr Elmes last week released a media statement calling on the board to donate the unused equipment to the Katie Rose Cottage, and a number of statements have been printed and now

appears in Tewantin shops. Mr Lewins said the statements were a public encouragement for the Sunshine Hospice board to break the law and “respectfully requested” the statements be removed.

MINISTER for Education Kate Jones has hit back at Member for Noosa Glen Elmes who last week criticised Ms Jones’ support of a petition to demand answers for local families reliant on bus services for their special needs children. Last week, Mr Elmes said launching a petition to call on the Federal Government to act was “scaremongering” and that the campaign did “nothing more than incite fear among families”. In a letter to the editor, Ms Jones said she didn't believe calling for certainty is “scaremongering”. “I have been proud to join with transport operators and families across Queensland in calling for the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to provide clarity on the future of school transport funding for students with a disability,” she said. “Queensland has a long history of providing an effective school transportation system for students with disability. The NDIA wants to replace this system but has failed to explain how this will work. “I have called on the Federal Minister responsible, Christian Porter, to provide certainty to families and transport operators. I will continue to fight to ensure families receive the information they need and are able to access the same quality, if not better, services under the NDIS.”

THEY say if there’s a will, there’s a way and nothing could be truer for the former volunteers of the Sunshine Hospice who this week announced a new premises for the community-run Katie Rose Cottage. Less than two weeks after an emotional walk-out from a board meeting, the group of former volunteers have already secured a lease on a new two-bed property. The property is located at Blueberry Drive, Black Mountain, and will accommodate two patients initially with the possibility of expanding the hospice to a four-bed facility. Supporters of the Katie Rose Cottage committee along with Member for Noosa Glen Elmes were invited to the new site this week for a tour of the premises. Speaking to the gathered guests, spokesperson for the group and leader of the volunteer walkout from the Sunshine Hospice op shops, Carol Raye, said the group tried very hard to remove the directors of the board but failed. “We are going to leave them behind now,” she said. “We always had a Plan B and that’s crept up on us really fast with the ability to have this property available to us for as long as we want to stay here. “We can decide if we want to stay here permanently or if we want to search for another property. But we have somewhere to start our hospice.” Ms Raye said Katie Rose Cottage was now a company and the new caretaker board had applied for charity status, which is expected to be approved within the next month, and the organisation will also open op shops to help support their operations. “We will have paid staff and volunteers so it’s not going to be run by just volunteers. We have a really good team and a fantastic general manager, John Gabrielson,” she said. Mr Elmes said the new hospice could now re-start, thanks to the support of volunteers and the community. “In what has been a tumultuous time since the Katie Rose Cottage became the Sunshine Hospice and was subsequently closed by the

Hall discussions NOOSA Council will hold a community workshop next month to consider the future of the Cooroy Memorial Hall and mayor Tony Wellington is calling on residents to join councillors and council staff at the brainstorming session. At the council’s ordinary meeting on Thursday’s 20 October, the council agreed to take over from Cooroy RSL as trustee of the hall. The hall has been closed for some time because of safety concerns. “Restoring the hall is certainly an option,” Cr Wellington said. “But if the community decides the land could be better used, perhaps as a memorial park or a playground, then we’ll happily look at those ideas too.” Cr Wellington said recent building inspections revealed it would cost around $400,000 to get the hall back up to basic safety standards. “To restore the building properly, and give Cooroy a hall it can truly be proud of, we’d need to spend between $800,000 and $1 million,” he said. Cr Frank Pardon said he also believed it was important the community had a say on the hall’s future. “Let’s be honest, historically the hall was an important part of the social life of Cooroy. But over the last few decades it hasn’t been properly maintained and it has been used less and less,” he said. “If the cost to re-open it was $100,000 I wouldn’t blink. I’d say to council ‘let’s fix it up and open the hall as soon as possible’. But with the cost potentially up around the $1-million mark, we need to think carefully about the hall’s future. “That’s why we need to find out what the community wants and be ab-

The NBN is coming to Noosa ... finally.

We're on the air, people

The Noosa Council will hold a public workshop on Saturday 26 November, from 9.30am, at the Cooroy State School hall, 59 Elm Street, Cooroy, to discuss the future of the Cooroy Memorial Hall. solutely sure that there is a real need for the building.” The public workshop will be held on Saturday 26 November, from 9.30am, at the Cooroy State School hall, 59 Elm Street, Cooroy. “We’ll start the workshop with a brief update and then residents can put forward their own ideas,” Cr Wellington said. “They can also discuss those concepts with councillors and council staff. And if there are any would-be benefactors interested in helping get the hall open and operating, we’d love to hear from them.” The community built Cooroy Memorial Hall in 1926 in memory of

soldiers killed in the Great War. Since 1979 the Cooroy RSL has been trustee of the hall. In recent years it has fallen into a state of disrepair, and was closed in November 2015. “Although there are some constraints regarding the use of both the land and the building, we are very keen to gauge what the Cooroy community’s priorities are,” Cr Wellington said. “This is about council working with residents to achieve the best possible outcome for everyone. The consultation process worked well with the Cooroy Butter Factory and I believe it can work for the Memorial Hall as well.”

FEDERAL Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien has promised construction of the NBN will start in Noosa communities before the end of the year, ahead of the rollout schedule. Mr O’Brien made the announcement yesterday and said the rollout of the NBN had been prioritised in underserviced areas, but 23,300 premises in Noosa should soon have access to muchneeded high speed internet services. “Residents in Castaways Beach, Cooroibah, Doonan, Noosa Heads, Noosaville, Sunrise Beach, Sunshine Beach, Tewantin, Tinbeerwah, and Verrierdale should soon see NBN contractors beginning construction over the next few weeks,” he said. “This work is ahead of schedule and the community will notice contractors boring and digging trenches, installing new pits and cabinets, as well as hauling, splicing and testing fibre cables. “This is welcome news for local residents and businesses as Noosa communities move closer

to being able to connect to the NBN and access fast broadband services.” Access to fast broadband will provide a range of benefits to homes and businesses, including improved opportunities to work from home, better access to online education and health services, and more options for on-demand entertainment. Families will be able to be connect to the NBN at the same time, using multiple devices and all enjoying the same fast speeds. For business, e-commerce, sending and receiving files, accessing online services, internet and data security, cloud based sharing, or communicating with staff and customers, will be faster and more efficient with the NBN network. Mr O’Brien said the NBN network would become critical for health, education, business development and the overall long-term sustainable growth of the region. More information on the NBN and rollout areas is available at: www.nbnco.com.au/maps.

Trainees impress employers By Hollie Harris

Here’s cheers to Eumundi LION has announced a new partnership with the Imperial Hotel and a return of the much-missed local beer brand - Eumundi - which will once again be brewed on site at its spiritual home, the Imperial Hotel in the heart of Eumundi. Eumundi Lager was born in 1988, when John Lynch (a brewing engineer and developer) invited people to invest in a brewery in Eumundi. The group purchased the Imperial Hotel in Eumundi, installed a brewery and launched Eumundi Lager in February 1988. Following a brief public listing the brewery was closed in 1992 and brewing of Eumundi was contracted to Yatala Brewery (formerly Powers Brewing then CUB). In making the announcement of Eumundi Lager’s return, Lion brewmaster Chuck Hahn said the partnership

been such a rewarding experience to bring the Imperial Hotel back to life and ensure it remains an integral part of the Eumundi community,” he said. “It’s exciting to be able to build on this even further by partnering with Lion to bring back a truly local beer in Eumundi and we’re really looking forward to sharing an authentic brewing experience with our visitors in the future.” Imperial Hotel general manager Brendan Fenlon echoed Michael’s enthusiasm for the new project. “My staff and I cannot wait to be offering Eumundi on tap, and we’re genuinely thrilled to be part of the next chapter for the iconic Imperial Hotel,” he said. Eumundi will be sold on tap at the Imperial Hotel, with broader distribution to be considered in the future.

would revive a much-loved local craft beer for Queensland. “We’re excited to be partnering the Imperial Hotel and building a new brewery that will rekindle Eumundi in the place where the beer was first crafted in 1988,” he said. “We’re planning to have the brewery up and running in the New Year to offer a great range of flavoursome craft beers to locals and visitors to the area.” The Imperial Hotel has undergone extensive renovations over the past two years, culminating in December 2015 with the opening of a beer garden. Michael Arnett, joint owner of the Imperial Hotel, said the growing popularity of craft beers combined with the refurbishment of the Imperial Hotel made this the perfect time to bring back a local favourite. “As local residents it has

UNITED Synergies was proud to host their Industry Night barbecue for the ten Tait-Duke Community Cottage construction trainees on Tuesday night and were so impressed with the turnout of supporters. The evening provided an opportunity for the ten trainees to showcase the progress being made on the restoration of the Tait-Duke Community Cottage and have the opportunity to meet industry employers. United Synergies Regional Manger East Coast QLD, Danielle Mackenzie highlights the success of the project to date and the importance of securing further work for the ten trainees at the conclusion of the project. “The 98-year-old Queenslander Cottage was generously gifted to Noosa Council by the Tait-Duke

Family and relocated to Earl Street Tewantin with the aim of becoming a meeting and activity space for the local community. “We selected ten trainees, aged 15 to 55 years of age, from a competitive recruitment process for young people and mature aged workers, who began construction and restoration work in August of this year,” Ms Mackenzie said. “Thanks to the hard work of the ten trainees and the support of our partners and local businesses - including Bootsco Workwear, Trade Tools, Evolution Screen Printing, Bunnings Noosaville, Kennards Hire, Noosa Landscape Supplies, Bebrok Excavations and Hanson - we are now more than half way through the project,” she said. Local construction trainee, Bailey Bosoky, says that the project has proved to be an important turning point for him and the other trainees.

Fashionista the best in region Kym and Garry Logan of Noosa River and Canal Cruises, Assunta Easton, long-term member of Pomona Pacers and Wendy O'Hare, women's golf director at the Cooroy Golf Club.

River cruise raises anti-cancer cash By Hollie Harris NOOSA River and Canal Cruises have once again donated their craft, their time and their expertise to help the Cooroy community fund-raise for breast cancer research. For four years now, Gary and Kym Logan of Noosa River and Canal Cruises have supported the Cooroy lady golfers in their efforts to top up the money raised during their “Tee off for Breast Cancer Research“ golf day. Champagne flowed and tapas were passed around as the group sang to the tunes of yesteryear while cruising along the beautiful Noosa River enjoying the sun set to the west and the full moon rising to the east. The Pomona Pacers quickly

The fundraiser booked out quickly as the community really go 'on board' to support those affected by breast cancer. booked their seats aboard and many dollars were raised in just over an hour for this very worthy cause to help those affected by breast cancer.

NOOSA'S very own Carlie Wacker has beaten nine hopeful fashionistas to be named best dressed throughout the Sunshine Coast at the 9th annual Sunshine Coast Style Awards. The awards were held on Saturday 22 October as part of the Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival, and Carlie said she absolutely loved representing Noosa in the style stakes and was proud to be honoured as the region’s best dressed. Carlie along with nine others who had been nominated by the public were “style stalked” before the awards to make sure they were always fashionable. While it was a lot of pressure, Carlie said she was always dressed up anyway, so she tried not to worry about it. “You can imagine the pressure to look your best just when you’re heading out for a coffee or to the shops, but I am usually dressed up, so it wasn’t too much of a stretch,” she said. Carlie said her dad, who worked in the retail industry, had been her main fashion inspiration throughout life.

“I have always loved fashion, and I think that’s because of my dad,” she said. “Dad was in retail, and he was always well-dressed. He always looks a million bucks.” The trick to a great outfit? Carlie said it was all about getting the mix of old and new just right. “My style philosophy is something old, something new, something borrowed and something green,” she said. “I always mix something new and designer with something retro or vintage. I just love op-shopping and local pre-loved markets. They’re a great way to find something new while moving on things I don’t want or love anymore,” she said. “Green refers to sustainable or recycled clothing and that can be the vintage piece. But I think everyone is becoming more aware of pollution and are making a stand against exploitation in the fashion industry. So I always make sure I wear something eco-friendly in some way.” Carlie said her organisation skills also helped her to look her best at all times.

Noosa's Carlie Wacker has beaten nine other hopefuls to be named the best dressed throughout the Sunshine Coast. “If I have a big event on, then I like to think through my outfit, but usually when I have a 5am start, I like to have everything laid out the night before,” she said. For Carlie, the highlight of winning the best dressed award was the opportunity

to fly the fashion flag for Noosa. “I just love Noosa,” she said. “I am so passionate about the region. I love being able to represent Noosa, and I just love all the boutique retail stores opening here.”

Noosa in wild blue yonder By Hollie Harris NOOSA District State High School students had a taste of life in the air this week with a visit from the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Aviation Candidate Management Centre officers, with this unique opportunity a part of the school’s Aerospace Gateway Program. Senior aerospace students, and junior students interested in aviation, undertook the Air Force Simulator Experience which contained two F/A-18 Super Hornet simulators and two controller stations, allowing them to be a fighter pilot, joint battlefield airspace controller or an air battle manager. The students tried on life support equipment, including helmets and g-suits and interacted with air traffic control activities on tablets. The aim of the visit was to engage the students interested in an aviation career by providing them with real pilots, air control officers and JBACs to interact with. The RAAF officers were impressed with the students’ level of knowledge and the number of female students

Clash of pollies stole show By Hollie Harris

Female students were encouraged to continue exploring their passion for aviation, as female air traffic controllers are sought after due to their ability to multi-task and no tunnel vision, which is statistically more common in males. “It’s helped me realise that I most definitely want to be a pilot," said Charlie Young.

The female students enjoyed engaging with a female fighter pilot, who was able to share some of her experiences and expertise through personal anecdotes and GoPro footage taken from inside the cockpit. The experience helped some of the students solidify subject choices and potential career pathways. “I’m most definitely picking aerospace as a subject in senior school,“ Deanne Jackson said.

WARM sunshine and light spring breezes greeted last Sunday’s racegoers at the 13th annual Noosa Billy Cart Grand Prix, but it was the clash of the ‘pollies’ that drew the crowd. The atmosphere at Noosa Christian College was energetic, and the Hon Peter Wellington MP and Noosa mayor Tony Wellington opened the event, but once the helmets went on and the flag was raised, the competition kicked off. Both elected officials participated in a race to kick start the event, and Peter Wellington took home the trophy. Sponsored by Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, the event was

held to raise funds for the Noosa Christian College. Races for all ages ran throughout the day, and the kids surely slept well after a lot of pushing. When not racing, students were kept busy, happy and entertained by the carnival atmosphere - fairy floss, camels,

face painting, balloon twisting, a mechanical bull and various inflatable activities. The Noosa Billy Cart Grand Prix has gone from strength to strength in recent years, and is proud to be an attraction that draws even interstate visitors to the Sunshine Coast.

Harvey Norman has a real buzz about it By Hollie Harris SHOPPERS who have stepped into Harvey Norman Noosa lately may have noticed some exciting things happening around the store and a buzz in the air. The store is undergoing a bit of a freshen-up facelift and in a few short weeks Harvey Norman Noosa will be more user-friendly than ever before. That buzz in the air is all about the unbelievable competition where Harvey Norman shoppers will have an opportunity to win one of greatest holiday experiences imaginable and it all kicks off on 1 November. Every time shoppers spend just $50 or more in any of the departments in the Noosa store they will go in the draw to win a life-changing holiday. They will get to stay in an adult-only oasis at the Exclusive Hamilton Island Beach Club in the heart of the Whitsundays and snorkel with Nemo on the reef followed by a trip to Port Douglas to ride in a hot-air balloon over the Atherton Tablelands, crocodile spotting and jungle surfing. It sounds more like a movie than a prize. But it gets better. There is also a visit to the iconic Sails in the Desert Resort with a

Harvey Norman Noosa franchisees Michael Hines, Carlo Di Clemente, Greg Breach and Rod Ayache are excited to give away another life-changing holiday. This time, the lucky winners will travel around Australia. Harley motorcycle experience out to watch an Uluru sunrise, dinner under the southern desert sky and then a rail journey on the famous Ghan to SkyCity in Darwin will take this adventure to a whole new level. The winner will cruise the Yellow Water Billabong in Kakadu, dive with whale sharks in Western Australia, four wheel drive out to the Pinnacles and give sand boarding a go, bike ride around Rottness

island and then head over to Adelaide to explore the Barossa. Crown Towers in Melbourne will be the base to visit the 12 Apostles, watch the Penguins on Phillip Island and then head to Tassie. Then it’s back to Sydney to stay at one of the best hotels in Australia, the Intercontinental Hotel, and then climb the Harbour Bridge and sail in a tall ship.

The Nomads Golf Club has donated $20,000 to the Noosa District State High School Support Program.

It doesn’t get any better than that. This prize will showcase the absolute magic of Australia from top to bottom and visitors can win it simply by shopping at Harvey Norman Noosa between 1 November and 24 December. Last year’s winner, Ray Thompson, was lucky enough to win the grand prize on Christmas Eve to surprise his wife Wendy with a six-week dream holiday around the world. From Hong Kong to Copenhagen to Sweden to Scotland and then onto Rome, Paris and London, Ray and Wendy Thompson experienced the trip of a lifetime. They then trekked around the US, stopping in New York, San Francisco and L.A. before returning home to their business and six children. “It all just ran like clockwork. It just flowed. There was so much to organise to pull it off, but the minute we were on the plane, we forgot about everything,” Ray said. “It was the best thing that ever happened to us and it has changed our world,” he said. The winner will be drawn on 24 December to make this Christmas the best ever for one very lucky person so shoppers are urged to get into this exclusive Noosa-only offer and put their hat in the ring for a life-changing adventure.

Golfers are the big supporters THE Noosa District State High School Support Program received a donation of $20,000 from the Sunshine Coast Nomads Golf Club, which was raised by 82 social golf club players. The golfers will be donating the money to the NDSHS Support Program to help fund a mini-bus for students with disabilities. The money raised is an increase of over $6000 from last year’s fundraiser and was mainly funded by a charity golf day held at Twin Waters Golf Course on August 26. The rest of the money raised came from a raffle the club held throughout the year as well as donations from local businesses and club members themselves. NDSHS School Principal Chris Roff was elated with the amount raised by the Nomads Golf Club. “The school was hoping for $15,000 and were overwhelmed when we were told that the amount totalled to $20,000," Mr Roff said. Nomads Golf Club is an international group, with 360 members in Australia, who all enjoy a game of golf, while raising money for charity. The Nomads on the Sunshine Coast have 82 members who play once a month at different venues across the coast. Branch fundraiser and vice-captain, Warren Daniel, said he was thrilled with the turn-out this year to the charity day and was humbled by the donations received from businesses on the coast. Adopted greyhound steals the show THE Rotary Club of Eumundi’s recent big bush dance fund-raiser at the House with No Steps in Doonan shone a light on the valuable work of three local animal charities; the RSPCA Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre Eumundi, The Friends of the Hound - Greyhound Adoption and the RSPCA Animal Care Centre Noosa. President of Eumundi Rotary Greg Molyneux presented representatives of each of the organisations with a cheque for $1000 each at a recent Rotary meeting to help each organisation with their mounting operational costs. A highlight of the presentation was the presence of Lochie, a photogenic, adopted greyhound whose meeting behaviour was without blemish. “Our club, led by our event co-ordinator for the bush dance Bronwyn Innes, partnered with the three animal charities enjoying plenty of fun and friendship at the bush dance while concurrently raising much needed funds for each of the charities,” Mr Molyneux said. “Generous sponsorship for the bush dance was received from many donors with the Member for Noosa Glen Elmes leading the way together with Tewantin Noosa RSL, Maroochy RSL, Colin Crawford, Rockcote, Gregson and Weight, the Ginger Factory and many local businesses within Eumundi and surrounding district.” Mr Molyneux confirmed that the club had plans to raise funds each year from its signature event, the Summer All Over Long Lunch, to be held under the trees at the Original Eumundi Markets site, on Sunday 17 March next year, for up to 350 guests. Pinky pride NOOSA District State High School staff and students donned their finest pink outfits to take part in the Pink Precinct Fun Trail throughout the township of Cooroy on 20 October. Participants made a gold coin donation to receive 'passports’ that were stamped at a variety of different shops and locations around the main streets of Cooroy, all situated along the beautifully decorated pink trail. Year 9 student Blake Chapman took out first placing, sprinting through the trail and earning himself a Fitbit as his prize. Noosa councillor Jess Glasglow was the second person to cross the line and he kindly donated his Fitbit prize to the school's Year 12 co-ordinator Bridge Muir for being the first woman to complete the fun run. Year 9 student Rhys Lloyd received a voucher for being the best dressed competitor. Personal stories of brave battles with cancer were shared and the pink trail participants were entertained with a tia chi demonstration at the completion of the event. All participants were reminded to take part in breast cancer checks, as cancer does not discriminate or target a specific gender or age. A mobile Breast Screen service will be set up in Cooroy in late November.

highlight home "Sails" in Sunshine Beach.

Designer living MBC Prestige has joined forces with Stephen Kidd of Kidd and Co Designs to present three luxury developments to the market. Two will be located in the highly soughtafter Sunshine Beach. Promising luxurious beachside living, White Sands and Sails both offer whole floor apartments with three bedrooms and three bathrooms in stunning beachside locations. White Sands is on Crank Street and features a design that accentuates all that is Sunshine Beach; from the built-in storage for surfboards and beach equipment to the

stunning ocean views, the lucky owners of these apartments will want for nothing. Buyers will need to be quick with the stunning penthouse apartment already sold, there is just one apartment left in the White Sands development. MBC Prestige and Kidd and Co Designs have also created the Sails development, which is conveniently located on Duke Street, just a short stroll from all Sunshine Beach has to offer including the sparkling ocean, popular surf club, local cafes, restaurants and shops.

Boasting a spacious floorplan, the Sails apartments feature three bedrooms and three bathrooms, plus a designer kitchen and large outdoor terraces so there is ample space for family and guests. There are only two whole-floor apartments on offer in the Sails development. In Noosaville, the exclusive Kalani

development offers a rare chance to secure luxurious riverfront living on Gympie Terrace. The whole-floor apartments have been designed by Stephen Kidd and enjoy magnificent views over Noosa River to the Noosa rivermouth, plus state-of-the-art inclusions and finishes. Moments from the beach THIS brand new, modern beach house is located only moments from the pristine sands of Sunrise Beach. Designed by Andrew Bock, the Kailani Beach House is simply stunning with architectural features throughout and beautiful finishes such as timber flooring and stone bench tops that add an element of luxury to the three-bedroom home. Living is spread over two levels with the main living spaces and the main bedroom on the top level to make the most of the easterly position and sea views. The designer kitchen features all the modern conveniences one would expect in a home of the calibre and overlooks the dining space where banks of louvered windows allow fresh breezes and

natural light to fill the home. Large sliding doors open out to a covered balcony where the sea views can best be enjoyed. When it comes time to relax, there are multiple living spaces with an open-plan lounge upstairs next to the kitchen, plus a more casual family room on the lower level that could also be used as a media room, large office or playroom for the kids. This property also features a double car garage and the yard is fully fenced for the kids and family pet can play safely on the lawn. All of this is just a 15-minute stroll from the vibrant Sunshine Beach village and the popular Surf Club, while Noosa Heads, Noosa River and the Noosa Junction are only a short drive away.

Pet friendly - With 63 per cent of Australian households owning pets, making your property pet friendly will greatly increase its rentability.

BUILDING an investment property is becoming increasingly popular in Queensland. It is a desirable place to live and it is significantly more affordable than the southern states of New South Wales and Victoria but a lot of investors make the mistake of not researching what tenants actually want in a rental property. If a property doesn’t tick a certain number of boxes then the property will sit vacant

Air-conditioning - At the very least ensure the property has air-conditioning in both the living room and main bedroom. It’s even better to have it in all the bedrooms. Ceiling fans throughout the property also gives the tenants the flexibility to save on power and open the house up. Oversized entertaining area - We still see new homes being built where the outdoor

entertaining area won’t accommodate a sixseater dining table, chairs and a barbecue. Make this area a little larger and you will have happy tenants. Gas cooktop and hot water - A gas cooktop is a desirable feature for tenants and gas instantaneous hot water means no cold showers for the last person. Privacy and fenced yards - Privacy for tenants, especially with duplexes and dual occupancies is essential. Blinds or curtains should be included and ensure the property is fenced, even if the yard is small. Don’t put the laundry in the garage. Although this isn’t always a deal breaker a separate laundry with or near a linen

Finally, a garden shed for storing the mower, good natural lighting, multiple TV points and internet access all go towards making a property attractive for prospective tenants. Weight of numbers THE apparent “debate” about global warming has two sides. On one side there are thousands of scientists who have amassed mountains of evidence, all considered, published and criticised by other scientists. After many decades of analysis, modelling, and observing the predictions from the models, all the world’s peak scientific bodies, including the Australian Academy of Science and the CSIRO, conclude that the Earth is warming over 20 times faster than in any other warming period over the past million years and the warming is due to the extra CO2 that is released when we burn fossil fuels (oil, coal and gas). This CO2 is identifiable by measuring carbon isotope ratios in the atmosphere. On the other side of the “debate” there are people with little or no scientific training, like Woody Dass, who simply say “I don’t believe it”. Their reasons are along the lines of “we haven’t thought of everything” or “we have always used coal so it must be okay” (Case Smit, 13 October). John Turner’s irrelevant ramble (13 October) about the greenhouse effect is like saying that the laws of gravity are wrong because a helium balloon goes up. The GW deniers either cannot read or are not interested in reading the huge volumes of literature that lay out the empirical evidence, the internal debates and the reasons why the consequences of GW should not be ignored. In spite of P. Rutherford’s demonstrably false assertion that alternative energy was responsible for the SA blackouts (20 October), we should follow the lead of South Australia in replacing coal with renewable energy. Yes, let’s spend our tax dollars supporting the next generations. Our government is so worried about leaving the next generation with a monetary debt that they are ignoring the environmental debt, which may be impossible to repay. Steve Hall, Cooroy.

Dylan’s philosophy THERE have been two seminal works of art in human history (ha ha joke). They are seminal because the provide, with the most stunning acuity, present, ontological and future descriptions of our “society“. One, my favourite, a movie called Idiocracy, portrays the locomotive of stupidity that is a consumerist society with no factual or spiritual basis. Woops. What it actually does is describe our “society”; dumbing down to unfathomable levels, wilfully blind with no spiritual or factual reflection of a positive empirical reality. Number two we all know (those of us who can still read complex text and divulge meaning from such) the book 1984. You have got to love 1984. It is Nostradamus. “Big Brother“ is our military industrial complex, ’Fear will keep us safe’. “The Party“ is money - remember in the book “The Party“ is everything. Another “Slavery is Freedom“, modern translation work. For all who doubt my notion, consider this ... can you ever have THOUGHT of a society that functions without money? No? I rest my case. “Doublethink“ = money is life, life is money. “Newspeak“ (e.g. economic growth, how will I pay, you have to buy food) wipes out the ability to come up with an alternative proposition, literally you have no words to describe anything different. Oh and don’t forget “War is

The NBRF is the governance body of the UNESCO Noosa Biosphere structure and has a three-year arrangement with council for the disbursement of funds from the environmental levy for projects of biodiversity significance and sustainable living. The $180,000 referred to by Bob Jarvis for operational costs include the expense for dedicated admin personnel. The NBRF, through a trust, is also responsible for raising long-term funding outside of council. Both organisations have struggled to maintain a full committee and at least one newly-appointed councillor has questioned the appointment of NBRF directors, seeking a progress report due November 2016. John Wood, Doonan.

LENSCAPE

Butt out Peter Smith sent in this beautiful photo of a famous Noosa sunset over the Noosa River. The photo, named Golden Glow, was taken from Gympie Terrace while Paul enjoyed an evening barbecue. If you have a photo of Noosa's landscape or wildlife send it to newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au Peace“, the benefits of a perpetual enemy = war on terror. Alarm bells should be ringing. P.S. You would have to be an idiot and a wilful destroyer of the mind to suggest a human should not be concerned about the status of the biosphere+atmosphere that sustains life. Or is this a fact that is being erased from history, that a biosphere+atmosphere created in the formation of Earth sustains life? Dylan White, Doonan.

Love your work MY LAUNDROMAT is in Tait Duke Cottage’s front yard and I first-hand have observed what a great job the Noosa Council and United Synergies are doing on its renovation. I just hope the $30,000 a year, the heritage levy the council collects is where the money is coming from. It is so pleasing to see the construction trainees so keen to be taught by such good instructors. If it goes over budget you will not read me complaining about it. Maybe when they finish, the council could get use the same team or get another team to do the same on the Cooroy Hall (next to the RSL) and use our heritage levy to fund it, even if we need to borrow off next year’s. That is what us ratepayers want to see done with our money - a community house surrounded by community gardens, a 100-yearold cottage restored to its original condition for the community and tourists to be able to visit. Since my last printed letter on Biosphere funding “Benefits remain elusive - 6 October“, “Code of silence - Mark and Jan Rose 13 October“, and “Follow the money - Eddie Grantham - 20 Oct“ there remains the question of one person to come forward with an answer (environment levy - yearly $1.8 million and the NBRF) “could anyone in this shire brag about one solitary benefit (as a ratepayer, resident or businessman) they have received.“ I want an answer like “Tait Duke Cottage“ not a green and fuzzy fairytale answer like it improves tourism. Find me one tourist that will tell you they came to Noosa because it was a biosphere. Noosa has been and always will be a desirable destination for tourists, with not one cent spent on tourism - forget about the tourism levy and board they do nothing - as too the Biosphere - people come to Noosa because Noosa is Noosa - it has all the essentials for a great place to visit and stay - it has climate, location, resorts to suit most needs, stand-up paddle boards, surf schools, boat and canoe hire, horse riding, (camel rides until some stupid NPA person wanted them stopped) it has history nearby in its surrounding towns, sporting facilities, parks and walkways, bush, fishing, Pacific Ocean, blue water, the Noosa River - you name in we have got it. Just let it be - don’t interfere. Stop wasting money on the NBRF (thank goodness the council got rid of their stupid fairytale jury system) - sack the lot and send them back to UNESCO. Concentrate on looking after your local roads, rubbish, rates and established businesses and the rest will look after itself. Bob Jarvis, Tewantin.

Wall of honour IN THE absence of any recognition for our pioneering industries of timber, dairy and fishing, which our Noosa Shire was founded, may I suggest the owners of the new 7-Eleven complex on Eumundi Noosa Road and Noosa

Council consider a mural be painted on the big brick wall to honour those three industries? That is, a dairy scene, a timber scene and a commercial fishing scene. The Tasmanian town of Sheffield, with its outdoor murals is an example of what I am proposing. One can Google it up if interested. Trevor Clarely, Boreen Point.

Tools hung up I WOULD like to pay tribute to Giuseppe Antonia Odessa, simply known as Joe from “Joe’s garage“ in Commerce court, Noosaville, who after 26 years has decided to semi-retire. Over the years, Joe has provided a great service to our community, and became a bit of a local legend and everyone’s favourite mechanic; his honesty, knowledge and hard-working ethic will be dearly missed. Joe moved to the coast in 1988, married in 1990, and opened his garage the same year. With growing popularity, Joe had to move his business three times (in Commerce Court!), and over the years, developed such a following that you needed to book more than a week in advance, and finally when he decided to put his business for sale, it sold within two weeks! Joe was a proud Eumundi resident for 16 years, before in 2009 moving onto a small acreage in Pomona, where he is starting to enjoy his well-deserved semi-retirement . On behalf of hundreds of very satisfied customers, I would like to congratulate Joe and wish him all the best for the future. Dom Massoni, Verrierdale.

Eye on the Biosphere RECENT Biosphere related letters to the editor (Bob Jarvis, Noosa Today, 6 October) from residents and Noosa Community Biosphere Association members have once again questioned the activities and funding of Noosa Council’s somewhat confusing Biosphere twotier organisational structure - the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) and Noosa Community Biosphere Association (NCBA). Noosa Council has dedicated several hundred thousand dollars towards this latest Biosphere organisational venture including funds for dedicated admin personnel and two websites. Both the NBRF and NCBA committees are made up of a small group of volunteers who have been granted free access to council’s Doonella House in Tewantin. NCBA has been set up as an autonomous not for profit association representing the community although continues to be fully funded by council coffers. It is interesting to note that the NCBA president also represents the council appointed NBRF as one of the directors. NCBA has secured at least three grants in excess of $40,000 through out of round community grants and the environmental levy. These grants include $20,000 for operational costs and an additional $20,000 as part of community engagement parties. These ’harebrained’ parties as Bob Jarvis refers them as were to be held from June-September 2016 throughout Noosa Shire but have been delayed. NCBA objectives include community engagement and developing and collaborating on projects in line with UNESCO Biosphere principles. The NBRF directors were appointed by council of which the mayor also sits on the NBRF.

WITH the State Government relaxing local law initiative guidelines, Noosa Shire is well positioned to ban cigarette smoking from her beaches and national parks. Being surrounded by a marine reserve and substantial national park parcels, and as a signatory to the biosphere project, it would fall within the spirit of the biosphere status to outlaw all cigarette smoking and disposal of discarded butts, from all of her beaches, surrounding pathways, parks and waterways (and carparks servicing them). California is in the process of introducing Bill SB 1333 - “the measure creates a fine of up to $250 for those caught vaping or smoking a cigar or cigarette, or disposing of the remains of a cigarette on a state beach or park ... SB 1333 will make our (Californian) state parks and beaches cleaner and safer by reducing cigarette and tobacco litter, curtailing exposure to second-hand smoke and limiting the threat of park fires“ Senator Marty Block (San Diego) told his colleagues Tuesday, before they voted 26-10 to approve the bill. He also said that cigarette trash could hurt wildlife and fish. So I am making an appeal to Phil Amson, Noosa Council’s local laws co-ordinator, to take the bold initiative and champion the protection of our beaches and river, further strengthening the ground-breaking state law initiative. Fael Kincaide, Little Cove.

Fish for food I HAVE forwarded this article to reference the current state of recreational fishing in the Noosa region, post the annual sea mullet ocean haul season. Our company has maintained a commercial fishing connection to this region since the 1940s, and continues to today. As I have stated publicly over many years, the commercial mullet ocean haul is a sustainably proven, efficient historical fishing method providing a resource of high nutritional value to seafood consumers locally, nationally and globally. This fishery has a very small environmental footprint and a limited volume bycatch, which can be confirmed through Qld Fisheries log returns. This bycatch is also consumed domestically and predominantly by those who can’t or don’t fish for themselves. In a world facing increasing food shortage through climate change impacts and social structure breakdown, it seems incomprehensible that those elected to govern for the people, make erratic and irresponsible decisions to attempt to deny access to the food their constituents consume. Frank Pardon has been on this tangent of excluding commercial netters access to Noosa fish resources for many years. He chooses to ignore the fact that both the commercial and recreational sectors could not survive here if this was an unsustainable practice. Over this time the commercial fishers have continued to earn a living, the recreational fishers’ numbers have grown in the region, and as the article states, the fish keep coming. Commercial netters provide for the largest sector in your community, the seafood consumer. For all of the above to continue, a responsible council must ensure that community expenditure benefits the community. Removing access to fresh local seafood is not a community benefit. Channelling funds to ensure water quality impacts caused by population growth and waste disposal regimes are minimised, ensures a far more beneficial usage of community funds. Ensuring sustainability of this valuable public resource is the mandate of all sectors of government, and this burden should not be placed solely on the commercial fishing sector, but upon all users of this resource. The Claptomaniacs – local faces with legendary tunes.

A toe-tapping team By Hollie Harris FIVE-PIECE Noosa Shire-based band The Claptomaniacs will make their debut performance at Cooroy RSL on Saturday 12 November. If you have fond memories of UK and US music from the likes of Eric Clapton, Steely Dan, Joe Cocker, as well as classic material from the Doobie Brothers,

Lake Macdonald resident Alan Lander said the band avoids covering songs which are played to death on the radio and focuses on well-known numbers people have been missing. Claptomaniacs also features Cooroy resident Kenny Gamble on lead vocals, who has the gifted ability to handle Clapton, Cocker and Jagger among many others. “We are looking forward to

the Rolling Stones and more, this show is for you. The Claptomaniacs have developed a top-drawer reputation across the Sunshine Coast for their high-quality covers, capturing the hearts of those who appreciate great musicianship, and are now heading to the RSL for the first time. Known as one of the tightest sounds around, drummer and

playing the RSL – we haven’t played in Cooroy since our appearance at Cooroy Fusion Festival last May. “Hopefully we will see a few Fusion faces there," Alan said. The RSL will of course be laying on great food and bar service, and entry is free making this one for the calender on Saturday 12 November, at 7pm.

Grisham gold-dust

Best-selling author Kate Forsyth.

By Jenny Carter From Friends Of Noosa Library

Stings in the tales

ing that his client is exonerated. And so we go on. The game is not about justice – it is all about winning. The author is delightfully cynical and witty, and having been a lawyer himself is well aware of the bad laws passed by those he calls “our wise and courageous legislators”, and that the justice

system often fails those who should benefit from it. This is one of the best of legal thrillers, and I was gripped by anticipation and excitement as I read it. This, the latest book by John Grisham, is available at the Noosa Library.

STORYTELLERS in every culture have their folk tales. Many such stories in the English language have their antecedents in French and German tales for children. These stories were told with the idea of teaching lessons to youngsters but in truth today’s fairytales have developed from quite gruesome stories. Best-selling author Kate Forsyth is researching a doctorate in the retelling of fairy tales and much of her work has evolved into a fairy story of her own: her historical novel, The Wild Child. Set during the Napoleonic wars, Bonaparte, known as “the Ogre”, is sweeping through Europe and overpowering Austria’s ancient kingdoms. In the wake of his army come

unwelcome changes. French fashion and language is being adopted, the old traditions are scorned, and as the customs fade Austrian families are left in despair of their history and culture. The wild child of the title is Dortchen, youngest daughter of the town apothecary who is so fascinated by ancient stories that she can recount them word by word. The beauty and wisdom in the old tales are qualities Dortchen articulates well and this love of storytelling leads her to an enchantment, but not by a handsome prince but for her impoverished neighbour; a man without wealth or power but whose name will live on through the tales he preserves: Wilhelm Grimm. This young woman Dortchen told the Grimm and his brother nearly a quarter of all the tales in their first collection of fairytales. This is her story.

I, AND most readers of mystery and crime, love John Grisham’s work, and this tale is among the best of them. The story is fast paced with plenty of courtroom drama throughout the pages. Sebastian Rudd is the so-called rogue lawyer of the title. He is what is known as a street lawyer; has no elegant office, no partners, hates injustice and has the reputation of taking on the lost causes no-one else wants, twisting the law to ensure his clients receive the fair trial that he believes everyone is entitled to. There are actually six different stories here, linked together by the main characters in each. First is the young druggie punk accused of murdering two little girls, and readers will no doubt delight, as I did, in the unorthodox method used by Sebastian to obtain the evidence he needs to defend his client. Next we have the home owner who unwittingly fired on a SWAT team who invaded his home. What possible justification did the SWAT team have to break into an innocent citizen’s house with maximum surprise and force in the wee small hours of the morning? Are they prepared to admit their mistake? No! They are not! That is not “in their playbook”. Instead of an aggressive assault, why could they not have simply rung the doorbell in daylight and had a chat about an alleged offence? Sebastian has the job of unravelling the rigged police cover-up, and ensur-

Rockabilly hits Tewantin with a Twang!

Rockin’ Twang can't be beat By Hollie Harris ONCE a fringe genre of music, rockabilly has now burst onto the mainstream music stage - making high-energy, creative lyricists and sassy artists Twang a must-see at Tewantin this Friday night. When Twang first found their way into the spotlight, audiences were swept off their feet. Now with a more experience under their belt Twang is determined to knock you over and leave you begging for more. Tim Collett on slap bass and vocals is the founding and ongoing member of iconic

Australian rockabilly act 'The Convertibles’. His long association with the rockabilly genre has forged a rhythmic, percussive, solid, titillating slap bass style and has been a mentor to many upcoming enthusiasts. Dean Kendal on drums and vocals, who was a founding member of another iconic Queensland rockabilly act ’The Shakin Quavers’ is a wild man on the skins and says the rockabilly feel is as natural to him as breathing. Multi-award-winning country music performer Maree Gwynne, who shared honours with the likes of Keith Urban, has one big

voice and her performance channels memories of rockabilly queens like Wanda Jackson and Janice Martin. Last but not least on lead guitar and vocals, Dan Fargo is an in-demand performer and his vocal and picking skills are much acclaimed. His past stints with roots blues, rock and country acts has helped Dan reinforce and develop his own unique rockabilly guitar style and hone his crisp and growling vocals. Catch Twang perform live at the Tewantin Noosa RSL, on Friday 28 October, at 8pm. Entry is free so make sure you get in early to grab a good spot.

Zonta says no to violence against women. Join them in a special evening out at Cabaret En Rouge and help support women's issues.

THE Mosh For Daniel event is returning to the Coast for the second time on Friday 18 November, at The V Room at Villa Noosa. An evening showcasing some of the best heavy bands from around the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane this rock line-up will raise money for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. David Dean and Garth Douglas got together with Dean Morcombe to plan and organise the first festival in noosatoday.com.au

November 2014 where 10 bands played the Sands Tavern - and they are ready to do it all over again. The line-up is impressive, with the likes of Chronolyth, Darkc3ll, Holistic, Terror Parade and Tombstone rocking hard for Daniel. Darkc3ll is full of soul crushing beats, powerhouse industrial grooves, topped with a layer of dirty rock’n’roll swagger - this only begins to describe this musical juggernaut. The debut album REBOOT : REPEAT is packed with stadium level hooks and industrial flavoured anthems.

An Australian new wave metal band based on the Sunshine Coast, Holistic released their debut EP ’Perception of Reality’ in 2015 and with their brutal but melodic duelling guitar riffs, fat bass lines, flat out precision drumming mixed with ferocious and brutal vocals, this band is planning on taking the heavy metal world by storm. Mosh For Daniel comes to the V Room on Friday 18 November. Tickets are $10 plus booking fee pre-sold from Moshtix or $15 at the door on the night. Doors will open at 7.30pm and the gig is 18-plus.

Dairy essential in the early years URGED by World Osteoporosis Day on 20 October, gold medal-winning swimmer Michael Klim has jumped into the kitchen to highlight research showing kids and teens are missing out on calcium in daily meals – putting their bones at risk as they grow. Previously unreported data from the most recent Australian Health Survey research from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows children are running the risk of serious bone damage. According to the data, over half of the Australian population aged two years and over had inadequate usual intakes of calcium, more than half (54 per cent) of girls aged 9 to 11 years and 45 per cent of boys aged 9 to 11 years had inadequate usual intakes of calcium, and one in five girls aged 4-8 years had an inadequate usual intake of calcium. When it comes to teens, more than eight out of 10 girls aged 12 to 13 years and nine out of 10 girls aged 14 to 18 years had an inadequate usual intake of calcium. The equivalent figures for boys in these age groups was around seven out of 10. Experts suggest as kids grow, so should their intake of dairy foods to ensure they are getting enough calcium. Klim said his online recipes and videos were handy for busy parents but also ideal for kids and teenagers to make themselves. “Dairy is just a part of life for me - milk is Klim spelt backwards. Seriously, though, I’ve always loved milk and cheese and yoghurt – can’t get enough, Klim said.

Dairy Australia dietitian Amber Beaumont urged parents not to forget the fight against osteoporosis starts in the younger years.

Gold medal swimmer Michael Klim with his family. “I was lucky growing up because I had experts to help with my diet. They always highlighted the important role milk, cheese and yoghurt play in both building bones and fuelling my body with the energy it needed to get through the day. Now, as a dad, I just want to get a healthy meal on the table, and these recipes are designed to do just that. “So, with The Dairy Kitchen recipes we’re bringing some of that expert nutrition knowledge and com-

bining it with a love of good, easy food that even the fussiest kids and teenagers will want to eat. I’m no great chef, but even I can knock up these recipes in record time. Dairy Australia dietitian Amber Beaumont said Klim’s recipes were family friendly and urged parents not to forget that the fight against osteoporosis started in the younger years. “Childhood and the teen years are critical for building strong bones for the future with bones reaching their

peak density from around the age of mid-twenties to thirties, Ms Beaumont said. “The Australian Health Survey reveals that an astonishingly high percentage of children and teens aged nine to 18 years, particularly girls, are not getting their daily calcium requirements. “Milk, cheese and yoghurt are the richest sources of calcium in the Australian diet. It’s important for parents to check whether their kids

are getting enough calcium to meet their growing needs. The Australian Dietary Guidelines recommend kids consume more dairy foods as they get older to reflect this increased need for calcium. As well as calcium, dairy foods provide a whole package of essential nutrients for kids’ growth and development including protein, B vitamins and iodine to name a few. Your feet in good hands Treatment of Sports Injuries with Bowen Therapy Bowen Therapy is quickly becoming recognised as a valuable tool in the treatment of sports injuries and body maintenance in intense training programmes. Bowen Therapy can be used to treat acute injuries from sprains and concussion shortly after they have occurred because of the gentle nature of Bowen moves as well as expediting healing of more chronic sports injuries such as Plantar Fasciitis. Internationally, many athletes performing at elite levels have found great value in having regular Bowen sessions, not only to treat injuries, but to assist in reducing recovery time as well as preventing future injuries by restoring musculoskeletal function. Treatments release tight muscles, improve circulation and facilitate removal of toxins from the system for optimal muscle function. A Bowen Therapy session can assist with lymphatic drainage, rehydrating fascia, releasing adhesions muscle spasms and cramping. It can relieve swelling of ankles and knees, release hamstring and calf tension improving overall flexibility. A session can relieve neck and shoulder tension, jaw tension and back pain as well as to help the body restore symmetry to hips following groin strain and much more. With over 25 years in the health industry and background as a Registered Nurse, Noosa Bowen Centre’s Bowen Therapist Natalie has a deep understanding of what the body requires to regain balance and form. Her client base includes many local athletes from runners and cyclists, to basketball, tennis, football and golf lovers. By Jack Mangrove OVER the last week there has been some quality fish landed in the Noosa River, the area around the Tewantin stretch and the Noosa Harbour has been a favourite for jack anglers. Preferably, try and use live baits like herring, poddy mullet or live prawns. Using a snelled 4/0 hook set-up for the bait fish and a single for the prawns, Mustad Penetrators are great as they are very strong as well as being a lighter gauge so they do not damage the bait. Using soft plastics like the Keitech Easy Shiners or the Zman Ez Shrimpz have also been seeing some success. In the low light periods surface lures will also attract the red devils. Whiting have been in good numbers around the Frying Pan, Gympie Terrace stretch, Munna Point and the dog beach with the preferred bait being live worms and peeled prawns using a size 4 longshank bloodworm hook.

Ahme Graveson with a 48cm cod. If you want to have some fun, have a go chasing the whiting on surface lures, the 65mm Fish Candy Skinny Dog from River2sea has produced the better elbow slapper. Though the water is warming up there are still good schools of trevally and tailor present throughout the Noosa Sound and Woods Bays. Small pilchards, hardy heads and frog mouthed pilchards have been the go-to bait. Flathead still dominate the cap-

tures in the river and are in great numbers, for the bait angler small fish baits, or for the lure anglers soft plastics have got some outstanding results. Though the wind hasn’t been in our favour for the past couple of weeks, the beach anglers have been getting some nice fish while braving the winds. Anglers are reporting quality tailor being caught fishing the deeper, cleaner gutters right along the Noosa North Shore.

Noosa River becomes the classroom By Paul Blundell THE Noosa River is to be the classroom for the Riggers Schools Pilot Rowing Program. The School Riggers Rowing program will be a mix of indoor and on water rowing and will focus on remaining safe, learning to row while having fun and coming back for more. It is for the unsporting and the sporting because rowing can be enjoyed at all levels. This exciting innovative study is in conjunction with Rowing Australia, La Trobe University and three other facilities throughout Australia including Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club. At the completion of this study, a working model will be introduced throughout Australia under the Sporting Schools funding. Organisers of the program see a very exciting future for the youth of the Noosa region, and are looking out for proactive young people wishing to immerse themselves into rowing with the aim of becoming

youth coaches, such as university students studying sport for instance. The aim is to create a model for a sustainable rowing program in a regional area. Luke makes the Patriots squad By Richard Murrihy NOOSA SOFTBALL THE Noosa Softball club would like to congratulate Luke Thomas on making the Queensland Patriots squad, capping off a great year for him after representing Australia in the Under 19s. It was great to see future stars like Luke out on the diamond on Saturday, and it was the Under 15s who set the tone for the day with a great game between Dodgers and Redsox. There were many big hits

in the game with Jed and Callum driving out big ones while there were many others who hit well. The fielding was excellent, topped off by Chloe Murray's two great efforts in the outfield while filling in for the Redsox. The 13s had two good hit outs with the main one being Slammers v Slammers. Sandy and Simmo had the T-ballers at full flight down on diamond two with their skills workout, and then a game between them all, the future looks bright with these up

and coming kids. The seniors had two games in the afternoon, and after three weeks, a bit more competitive nature came out in a few players as it’s hard to tone down sometimes but as usual it was a fun afternoon. Games start at 8.30am for juniors and 1pm for seniors, with training on Monday to Thursday at the sports complex. If you are interested, come along and join a team and enjoy yourselves in a wonderful environment.

Lyn’s ahead of the field at Cooroy COOROY GOLF WOMEN ON Thursday 20 October, the women at Cooroy Golf Club played a Bisque Bogey vs Par. In this game, the player chooses how much handicap she will use on each hole after she has played it. This can cause a bit of tension and those who are willing to take the plunge and use their handicaps early on are the smart ones. Those who didn’t ended up with unused handicap at the end of the round. This happened to a few women including the winner and the runner-up. Thanks to Jan Galvin for donating the trophy. Winner: Lyn Blackmore (+7 c/b); Runner-up: Assunta Easton (+7 c/b); Rundown: Wendy O’Hare (+7), Colleen Sykes (+7), Maz Gray (+7), Carmel Clark (+6), Lynne Dawson (+6), Wendy Morse (+6), Lavinia Hill (+6), Chris Michael (+6), Aileen Morton (+5), Terri Cairns (+4 c/b); Approaches: Lyn Blackmore, Fiona Buchanan, Chris Michael; Longest Putt: Patsy Fayne. Are you thinking of joining a friendly Golf Club? Cooroy Golf Club is inviting women of all abilities to join their 9-hole competition on Tuesday mornings. The Tuesday Club is designed for beginners to come along and join in. There are golfers of all levels

playing together who are most willing to help. If you have never played golf and would like to try, but have been unsure of where to begin, this could be for you. You do not need a handicap and you can play for three weeks before you are obliged to become a member of the club. The club has golf clubs for hire if required. A big week at Carnage Cove Life of

brine PHIL JARRATT

WHEN you’re travelling, sometimes wonderful first impressions should be left at that. Closer examination often reveals there is no gloss beneath the gloss. Such was the case at the historic Closenberg Hotel in Galle, Sri Lanka, last week. Our tiny, musty room offered a view out over the bay of Megalle, but the first heavy rains of the monsoon had cast a grey pall over the abandoned hotel construction sites in the distance, and directly below the water was dark and scummy from the village drainage outlets pouring into it. I passed on a surf. Instead we called a tuk tuk and bumped and honked our way along the south coast road to the Horseshoe Bay House above Hiriketiya where host Marty Madell had reserved us the middle floor. This turned out to be a blessing since the sideways rain of a couple of nights earlier had ripped right through the penthouse, where we had

stayed the previous week. This space – where we’ve been a week now and find it hard to leave – still has a magnificent ocean view from the balcony but it offers a little more protection from the elements. The squirrels and the monkeys generally stick to the surrounding treetops, but we were invaded first night by flying termites who can’t fly with wet wings and apparently make for any open window when the monsoon starts. Quite a sight to come home to after dinner with thousands of the little buggers dead or dying and completely covering our cement floor. The surf here has also been a little different to our first experience, with the swell picking up to almost unmanageable proportions and the little bay offering only partial protection from the savage trade winds. Most days this week I’ve chosen to take a tuk tuk 15 minutes down the road to the more organised righthander I’ve named Fisho’s Point because I can’t remember it’s Sinhalese moniker. This means I’ve got to be on my toes so I can tell the driver to take the

second right after the “Surfboard For Hire” sign. But here at Hiri, Point Perfect has become Carnage Cove. About 90 per cent of the tourist population (which isn’t that many) are German backpackers who are here to learn to surf come what may. Every morning hordes of kamikaze pilots jump on their rented NSP epoxies and flap-paddle out into the bay without even looking at the churning rips that suck back every five minutes to unleash a double overhead, sucking, heaving, length of beach closeout. Heilige Scheiss! And there they go, abandoning ship, going over the falls on top of one another, all day, every day. One girl, who we’ve befriended, is a doctor, but even she doesn’t seem to comprehend the dangers of an ugly chunk of moving water. “Oh god, this is so much fun,” she told us while taking a break between sessions of getting relentlessly clobbered on the head. Miraculously, no-one seems to have been seriously hurt so far – at least nothing a massage and a few

KIDS PLAY FREE SUNDAY AFTERNOONS.

beers won’t fix – and the swell has finally calmed down. Yesterday I was enjoying a session on my rented Bonga Perkins Southpoint with just a few kamikazes and a good young Aussie shortboarder when he suddenly pointed to a fast-spreading black patch of water just inside us. As the patch spread closer the stench arrived with it. I realised immediately what had happened. The first big rains had flooded a homestay behind the beach and they had dug a channel to release the foul waters of a lagoon. Deep scheiss! Even the kamikazes realised that this was not good. The water was cleared immediately. But today it was like nothing had happened. The bay was clear and clean again, with shoulder-high peaks out in front of restaurant row and a few overhead sets on the point. A good coffee at the Beach House, then a surf before an egg hopper breakfast next door at Henry’s Blue Beach. Then ... well maybe fit in another quick one before the kamikazes get too thick. And then, find a recliner under the

palms and watch the carnage until beer o’clock. It’s not perfect here at Hiri, but I like it. John John set for a title IT’S not quite a done deal as I write, but if he doesn’t pick up his first world title in Portugal this week, there’s nothing surer than that John John Florence will clinch the deal at Pipeline in December. And well done, him! Like others before him, John has had to wear the expectation of greatness from a very early age. Now that monkey is off his back, who knows how many titles he can win? Meanwhile, our own Julian Wilson went into the Peniche event a long outside chance to take the title, but saw that evaporate as John progressed. For my money, however, he produced some of the real highlights of the comp, as this Poullenot pic attests. Can backhand surfing be any more perfect?

Unsung heroes rescue kite surfer Between the

flags RON LANE

THERE are many people walking around this great state of ours, who no doubt owe their lives to the unsung heroes of the silent service of the surf lifesaving movement: the Emergency Response Group. This team that work on a 24/7 call out roster, have added another incident to their diary of rescues. Last week right on dusk, Noosa members of the team responded to a call that a kite surfer was seen in big trouble in the mouth of the Noosa Bar. With the IRB being launched in the river mouth and the ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) on standby at the coast guard tower, the search patterns were quickly implemented and happy to relate the kite surfer was found alive some 800 metres from the river mouth on North Shore. “Our patient was a male aged about 25 years and as darkness had set in he was very happy to see us,” said a team representative. “He had first got into trouble when he landed in the river mouth and had a tangle of ropes all over the place. This time he was lucky, next time who knows.” This is yet another good ex-

ample of the great team work that exists between lifesavers and local police in times of emergencies. ‘ "When we launched our patrol boat the police vehicle was parked close to the water's edge and with headlights turned on high beam, facing the river mouth, the lights were a major help,” said a crewman. For Sunshine Beach and Noosa it was a very busy weekend in competition. Sunshine once again showed that their future regarding competition looks very promising with a really outstanding result at the Caloundra carnival. This time it was the young boys in the Under 14s who really made people stop and look. At day's end their results were; first in the Cameron relay, first and third in the board rescue, second in the surf swim and second in the board relay. Club spokesman Dave Gleeson said, “It was a good effort and to see the boys do so well indeed looks good for the season ahead.” In the first round of the Summer of Surf Series held at Alexandra Headlands, Noosa head coach Darren Mercer said, "We are very happy with the team's overall performance. Our Under 17 boys did well in both team and individual events. Results in the opens in both men and womens were also very good.

We had four making the finals of the Iron Persons events; two in the women's and two in the men's. The girls really had a great day with Lana Rogers, Jordan Mercer and Grace Kaihau winning the Female Taplin. Add to this in the men's open board relay, Rhys Burrows, Lachie Lansdown and Connor Burrows also had a win. "Rhys also won the open board. These were just a few of the many who performed well.” For the clubs this weekend, the weekend of the Noosa Tri will indeed be very busy. In keeping with the proud tradition of supporting major sporting events, local lifesaving clubs Noosa, Sunshine Beach, Coolum and Mudjimba will once again supply water safety. Their commitment will have started early Wednesday by Noosa covering the Endura Run-SwimRun, with a starting time of 6.30am. This will be followed by Friday's Arena Noosa 1000 Ocean Swim starting time 4.15pm. Then all clubs named will work together to cover the Noosa Tri with a race starting time of 6.15am. With the success of last year's Tri swim being shifted to Main Beach, it is good to see this move continued and we wish all involved calm seas and good luck.

Rhys Burrows, Lana Rogers, Jordie Mercer and Cooper Williams.

Young guns of the ring By Ron Lane IT'S that time of the year again when members of the amateur boxing fraternity will travel from as far away as New Zealand, South Australia and New South Wales and congregate in Noosa District. Reason: They will be here to take part in the now annual Young Guns Boxing Tournament to be held in Cooroy. The event will be staged on 5 November and will be held in the great hall of the Noosa District State High School. Starting at 3pm, it will provide a program of boxing second to none. A major factor in its success is the ongoing support of the High School, a support which is now in its eight year. Under the control and organisation of the Impact Boxing Academy Cooroy, this tournament was first run back in 2009; but the name Young Guns didn’t come into being until 2011.’ "We started using the name and it attracted attention so we have stuck with it,’’ said the owner and coach of the Impact Club Mark Evans. A major factor in promoting the night has been the amazing success of the Impact Club fighters at both state and national level. Add to this the success at the recent international tournament - the Celtic Cup which is held in Ireland - saw two Impact members, Taylah Robinson and Tyler Blizzard, come home with not only gold medals, but also the coveted Celtic Championship Belts and you have the perfect promotion. noosatoday.com.au

Sunshine Beach Nippers are winners

Mark Evans (coach), Tyler Blizzard and Steve Blizzard. With fighters such as these, plus some others of whom are now also Australian Golden Glove Champions from our local Impact and Noosa Box Office Gyms, you are assured of a great night of boxing. With the Commonwealth Games just a short time away, all fighters are out to win and impress the national selectors. At present, Israel Kani intends to have a team of six from the Noosa Box Office and Evans from Impact a team of nine to fight on the program. Following his success in Ireland, Tyler Blizzard (and Coach Mark) was invited home to fight in the Silver Dome Arena Launceston Tasmania, on the under card of the world championship title fight featuring Australian Danial Gael. Blizzard, who was matched to fight NSW best Brad Collins, sent the local supporters’ bananas when he won a unanimous points decision. "The reception that our young Tyler got in Launceston was remarkable,’’ said Mark. And he added with a laugh, “It was crazy; he was treated like a rock star.”

Lachie Proctor is someone to watch out for. If first fights can be used as a gauge, remember the name Lockie Proctor from the Impact Club. At a recent tournament in Caboolture, this young fighter - boxing with a style beyond his years - caused a sensation when he stopped his opponent in the second round. He's someone to watch.

LAST weekend the Sunshine Beach Nippers aged from Under 11s to Under 15s travelled to Metropolitan Caloundra Surf Club for the first Sunshine Coast teams carnival of the year. Teams carnivals include events where all Nippers need to work together to achieve results and the Sunshine Beach Nippers again dominated on the beach and in the water. Saturday was the younger kids (Under 11s and Under 13s) turn to shine whereas the older kids (Under 14s and Under 15s) were in action on the Sunday. Each day started with the beach relays and then onto the water events which included board rescue (one swimmer and one board paddler who 'rescues’ the swimmer and brings them back to shore), surf teams (team of four swimmers with combined results counting towards team points), board relay (three board paddlers each who complete a leg of the relay) and also the cameron relay

teams (two runners, one board paddler and one swimmer competing a relay course). There was a great display of athleticism from all Sunshine Beach competitors with winners across all age groups in many events. Along with the great challenge these youngsters get from competing against other Sunshine Coast clubs, most importantly these team events are helping to train our kids to become future lifesavers and teaching the young Nippers future lifesaving skills and conditioning them to reach and rescue a swimmer in distress if needed. Along with the great racing, these carnivals are great social events for the Nippers who learn how to work together with their mates, form great strong friendships and bonds for life. Nippers registrations are open until late November, so to inquire about joining Sunshine Beach Nippers (open for children aged 6 to 14), contact Terri Atkin at 5447 5491 or lifesaving@sunshinebeachslsc.com.au.

Dive, pedal and sprint – give it a tri! PROFESSIONAL athletes from across the nation are once again lacing up ready for the 2016 Noosa Triathlon, Australia’s highest profile triathlon event. Competitors will converge on Noosa Main Beach on Sunday 30 October to dive, pedal and sprint across the largest Olympic distance triathlon. Many of whom will be also fundraising to support charities close to their hearts.

Organisations set to benefit from the Tri include Choice Passion Life, the fundraising arm of the Cerebral Palsy League. Marathon enthusiast and top-ten fundraiser, Sean Peckover, is fundraising through the Cerebral Palsy League for CPL’s clients and can’t wait to put his athletic ability to the test. “The Noosa Triathlon is recognised as the best multi-sport event in Australia, and as a keen recreational

endurance athlete I needed to experience it for myself,” he said. “One of my colleagues has a son who receives services from CPL on a regular basis – without CPL she wouldn’t be able to work and her son would require full time care. For anyone looking to try something new you still have enough time to register to be part of our team for the Noosa Tri.”

ployment support. They also provide families with the necessary equipment and technology that you might expect with growing children with disabilities.” Peter said every charity has something to offer. “Don’t let excuses get in the road and your busy schedules get in the way. So what are you waiting for? Nothing is more rewarding,” Peter said.

Peter Cortis-Jones, who has competed five times already, said the experience was challenging but rewarding, and urged the community to rally behind the cause. “This was one of the most humbling experiences in my life and one that I truly cherished,” he said. “It made the donations real and every effort that I had made in fundraising feel very worthwhile.” CPL works with families who require disability, therapy and em-
