World’s Rodeo Queens on tour By Jeremy Sollars WARWICK Rodeo Queen Ashleigh Grant has been joined by her national and international counterparts this week as the Warwick Rodeo kicks into high gear. Miss Rodeo Canada Samantha Stokes, Miss Rodeo America Katherine Merck and Miss Rodeo Australia Katy Scott have enjoyed a week of events and activities, including catching up with Queensland Premier Annastasia Palaszczuk. They arrived last Thursday and spent two days on the Sunshine Coast with Ashleigh before travelling to Proserpine where they cruised the reef and the Whitsundays and had cocktails with the Premier. On Monday they were back to Brisbane where they met up with Ashleigh again and Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk before visiting the Gold Coast ahead of their return to Warwick for the Inductions function on
Wednesday evening. Today, Thursday, they will be having brunch with local councillors after a visit to Gordon Country and then will be at the first round of the National Finals tonight. Immediately after the National Finals, Miss Rodeo Australia Katy Scott and Warwick Rodeo Queen Ashleigh Grant will attend the Miss Rodeo Canada judging and attend the Canadian National Finals Rodeo. Ashleigh will return home and Katy will then travel to America for the Miss Rodeo America judging and attend the National Finals Rodeo in Vegas. As well as saying hello to them at the Showgrounds over the weekend visitors can meet and greet the rodeo queens at Rose City Shoppingworld on Saturday, where they’ll feature in a fashion parade outside Woolworths at 10am and 11am to showcase fashions from retailers in the centre.

Market is alive and strong Casey’s tips
By Jeremy Sollars RODEO street events will be missing from this year’s Warwick Rodeo celebrations but the ever-popular Warwick Potters Country Craft Market is still on in Leslie Park on Saturday. Warwick Potters’ Association president Ray Tainton said the ditching of the street parade and Mardi Gras had only caused a handful of regular stallholders to drop out this year and there would still be plenty to see and buy. “We’re still looking at 150 plus stalls this year,” he said. “Once again this year it will all be good quality merchandise - it’s mostly home-made and hand-made. “There will also be plenty of food options this year as always and we are looking forward to a good day.” Mr Tainton said there would be a few new stall vendors this year including someone from the Gold Coast who specialises in camphor laurel furniture. There are still a few vacant spots left for stallholders from the local area. Inquiries to Ray Tainton on 4661 1211 before the end of Friday. The Warwick Potters Country Craft Market in Leslie Park will run from 8am to 2pm on Saturday 29 October.

Shane’s back in saddle By Jeremy Sollars EMERALD cowboy Shane Kenny is lining up once again at the Warwick Rodeo in 2016, after taking out the all around cowboy title last year along with big wins in the rope and tie, steer wrestling and team roping. Shane has been in Warwick since last Friday getting ready for a big weekend of competition while staying with friends at Greymare. While he didn’t qualify for the steer wrestling in 2016 due to his favoured ride for the event ‘Locket’ - his “valuable partner in crime” - sustaining an injury recently, he’s still pumped for the other events in the Warwick arena. “I’ve had good preparation, I’ve been taking it a bit slower over the last few months, but I’m feeling fairly confident going into it,” Shane said. “We’ve done Mount Isa and the team roping finals at Capella and did reasonably well there so it’s been a good lead-up. “I’ve got my buckskin horse Jellybean who’s helped me win four rope and tie titles - a really seasoned competitor.” Shane’s first crack at competition will be in the rope and tie on Thursday evening at the Showgrounds. He has now won 35 titles in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association (APRA), including 15 all around and 13 in his best event, the rope and tie. He won his first APRA title in the rope and tie in 1991 at the age of 17 and a year later won his first all around title. See campdrafting photos from this week’s competition by TERRY WEST on pages 6 and 7; full rodeo and campdrafting weekend program on page 16.

Capacity crowd for rodeo expected
Weather (or not) for a big weekend
By Jeremy Sollars
RODEO organisers are hopeful predicted wet conditions for this weekend are being over-stated - and a lot can change weatherwise in 48 hours. When the Free Times went to press on Wednesday evening the official Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecast for Warwick and the Southern Downs was for showers and storms across Thursday and Friday and into Saturday. BOM forecaster Chris Joseph said there was a “greater than 50 per cent” chance of rain over the three days, with Sunday expected to be reasonably clear. “There is a series of trough systems which will be traversing southern Queensland and that is what will lead to some unstable conditions,” he said. “These systems will also extend from
the best cattle challenging the top campdrafters in the country in all five of our drafts as well as the top-ranked cowboys and cowgirls pushing their limits to take out the highly sought after gold buckle.” To grab a piece of the action, spectators can purchase tickets online at www.warwickrodeoandcampdraft.com.au or at the gates. Live streaming is also available on the Warwick Show and Rodeo website for those who can’t make it to the grounds this weekend. Updates are also available on the Society’s Facebook pages, ‘Warwick Rodeo and Campdraft’ and ‘Warwick Rodeo Queen’.

All systems are go Casey’s tips
By Jeremy Sollars THE controversial new Bunnings proposal for Warwick was approved at this week’s Southern Downs Regional Council general meeting yesterday, Wednesday 26 October. All councillors voted in favour of the approval with more than 60 conditions, including approval for Bunnings to bring fill onto the floodprone site to accommodate the new building. Councillors Neil Meiklejohn, Rod Kelly and Vic Pennisi abstained from the vote and left the meeting due to declared conflicts of interest.
In a report to councillors attached to the October meeting agenda, the council’s planning and engineering staff stated they had determined the new Bunnings would pose “no significant effect” on flooding in the vicinity. The Bunnings plan attracted nearly 70 objections from the public, including business owners and residents, mostly on the Condamine River floodplain adjacent to the proposed site at the corner of Canning and Condamine streets. Objectors have levelled allegations at the council and Bunnings
that extensive filling of the site required for the new building would increase the potential for damage to surrounding businesses and residents in the event of a major flood. Many argued that the new building should be erected on pylons to allow for better and faster flows of floodwater but this was not considered as filling had already been approved in an earlier, separate plan for the site by a previous owner for a bulky goods retail outlet such as Bunnings or Masters. The council officers have approved the development and filling
on the basis that flooding would not be worsened in a “1 in 100 year” flood scenario, which is the base model used to assess floodplain building across Australia. The most recent floods in Warwick well exceeded the 1 in 100 model, as did the 1976 flood which recorded the highest flood mark in Warwick’s history. Conditions on the development approved by councillors include a requirement for Bunnings to seal Condamine Street and partially seal Canning Street along the frontages of the new store.
In brief Community award KILLARNEY Memorial Aged Care walked away with one of the most prestigious and sought after community awards in the state at a gala event in Brisbane last Friday night, 22 October. The home’s lifestyle co-ordinator Skye Brisotto and manager Anne Hickey accepted Prime Super Employer Excellence in Aged Care Award at the 2016 Regional Achievement and Community Awards. Ms Brisotto was also a finalist in the Queensland Regional Achievement and Community Awards, which was won by Rebecca Heitzman of Goondiwindi. The 2016 awards featured more than 200 nominations received from across regional Queensland.
Australia Day Awards NOMINATIONS for the 2017 Australia Day Awards for the Southern Downs Region are now open and Mayor Tracy Dobie is encouraging people across the region to consider nominating a worthy recipient. “These Awards recognise the outstanding contribution of individuals who through their commitment and effort make our region a better place to live,” Cr Dobie said. “It is a wonderful way to acknowledge and thank the people within our community whose efforts inspire us and are worthy of recognition.” The categories are: Australia Day Citizen Award, Australia Day Junior Citizen Award, Australia Day Cultural Award, Australia Day Junior Cultural Award, Australia Day Sports Award, Australia Day Junior Sports Award, Australia Day Sports Administration Award, and the Australia Day Community Event of the Year. “It’s so important to recognise the contributions made by our outstanding citizens, so please take the time to nominate a worthy recipient,” the mayor added. Nomination forms can be collected from council offices and libraries or may be downloaded from the council’s website at www. sdrc.qld.gov.au. Nominations close on Monday 28 November.

Sidney Hollingsworth came first in the 12-15 years category, as well as the junior Border 1000. Warwick’s Cyril Brown claimed the 16+ open category, as well as the top prize for the Border 1000. See more action shots from Billycarts on the Border on page 12.

IT WAS an old-fashioned stand-off between two rival newspapers at Billycarts on the Border at Wallangarra on Sunday. Free Times photographer Terry West raced off against Stanthorpe Border Post reporter Liana Turner
in a test of wits and driving skills, hurtling down Glenlyon Street past crowds of excited onlookers. Despite his best efforts behind the wheel ‘Tezza’ was pipped at the finishing post and conceded a gracious defeat to his journalistic rival and did not request a re-run or a “best of three”.

ASBESTOS Awareness Week will be held from 19-25 November. Asbestos is estimated to be in about onethird of Australian homes. Homes built before 1990 are likely to have some asbestos present. Southern Downs Regional Council is urging homeowners to find out about asbestos and the likely places it can found be in a home before doing any renovation work, maintenance or high pressure water cleaning to avoid exposing themselves or others to asbestos fibres. The council encourages homeowners to seek professional advice if they need to disturb or remove asbestos or to find out how to work safely around it. They should also encourage any tradies working at their home to do the same. Anyone removing asbestos will also need to seek council advice about where and how they can safely dispose of asbestos waste. Information can be found at www.qld.gov. au/asbestos.

Station’s new voice By Jeremy Sollars NATHANIEL Leigh likes nothing better than to pump out some tunes of a Friday afternoon up at Warwick Rainbow FM 89.3’s studios. The young volunteer announcer recently secured a regular spot from 3pm to 6pm on Fridays at the Willi Street community radio station. Nathaniel said he is enjoying the gig and the buzz of being on air and that it’s done his self-confidence a power of good. “I became interested in community radio when I was on the Gold Coast and I used to listen to 4CRB down there - which is also 89.3FM - and I got to know their manager Steve Stuttle,” he said. “You can actually get Rainbow FM at the coast as well. “When I came to Warwick I met up with Rainbow FM president John Moulder and I just asked if they had any spare spots as I was keen to have a go at presenting.” Nathaniel’s Friday show spotlights ’60s, ’70s and ’80s hits and favou-
rites, along with country music. “I like the Aussies best - Troy Cassar Daley, Slim Dusty, John Williamson, Beccy Cole and, of course, our local favourite Norma O’Hara Murphy,” Nathaniel said. “But you can’t go past some of the American greats as well in Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and Alan Jackson.” Nathaniel takes requests from listeners as well as working his way through the station library. He also presents on a Sunday morning from 6am to 7am as part of the Christian Victory program. Nathaniel’s day job is lawn mowing and yard maintenance in partnership with his father David and their business Darling Downs Lawnmowing. Rainbow FM celebrates its effective coming of age this October - celebrating 21 years of community broadcasting. Management committee vice-president Bryan Pask said Warwick’s only local radio station first hit the airwaves on 23 Octo-
ber 1995. “Since then we’ve grown in reach and presence in the region and the community,” he said. “We’re a not-for-profit organisation and we’re here to provide a local voice for the Warwick and surrounding communities. “We broadcast 24-7 and have more than 120 hours of live and locally presented programs, 82 per cent of which is music. “We also have our own outside broadcast minibus and regularly transmit from local events, most recently the Bony Mountain Music Festival. “Community groups can take advantage of our free community announcements every day on Rainbow FM - just give us a call, we’d love to help promote your group or event.” You can listen to Rainbow FM via livestream by visiting its website and clicking on the Listen Live icon at www.rainbowfm.org. Contact Rainbow FM 89.3 on 4661 8989.
BANKING and insurance giant Suncorp has refused to rule out closing down its Warwick branch on Palmerin Street after confirming the impending closure of its branches in Stanthorpe and Goondiwindi. Suncorp Bank issued a statement about the closures after being slammed by Maranoa MP David Littleproud over the move. Suncorp said the closures, to take effect in January, are occurring because customers prefer to access its services online. Branches in Kingaroy and Miles will also close. Suncorp was unable to provide assurance that the Warwick Branch would not also face the axe. “Suncorp is committed to delivering value to its customers through giving them the flexibility to bank when, where and how they want,” a spokeswoman said. “We will continue to invest in regional communities across our many businesses and we will support customers to access the many options
they have for banking with us.” The spokeswoman would not give specific details about job losses at its Stanthorpe and Goondiwindi branches, saying they were “consulting” and “working closely” with the affected employees. “We have enacted an extensive support program, which includes assistance in securing alternative employment, redeployment in other parts of the business, additional training and access to dedicated recruitment programs,” the spokeswoman said. “It is anticipated the (Stanthorpe and Goondiwindi) stores will close on 20 January, 2017,” she said, “We are commencing discussions with a number of stakeholders including staff, landlords, customers and partners, on this change. “We will continue to keep all our stakeholders updated during this process. “Like all service providers, we regularly review our services, channels and locations and make changes based on customer and community behaviour and demands.
Man cleared of indecent assault A WARWICK District Court jury has found a man charged with indecently touching a 15-year-old girl not guilty. The jury took less than an hour on Tuesday 25 October to decide the fate of the 46-year-old Clifton man who was charged after the girl told police he touched her inappropriately in a shower. The Crown Prosecutor alleged the man sexually interfered with the girl at the time at a residence at Clifton in January 2015. The jury of eight men and four women heard the defendant was alleged to have entered the girl’s home during the morning while her mother was at work after the two exchanged Facebook messages. It was alleged that he indecently interfered with the girl while she was showering and that the girl had repeatedly told him to stop and leave the residence. The court heard that the defendant and the complainant had been known to each other before the alleged incident and that the girl contacted relatives and police on the morning of the incident and made a formal complaint to police that day. The man’s defence counsel questioned the thoroughness of the police investigation including a lack of fingerprinting in the residence. The accused man had pleaded not guilty at the start of the trial.
Nathaniel Leigh is loving his Friday afternoon spot on Rainbow FM.
Axe is still hanging over Suncorp branch By Jeremy Sollars
In brief
Maranoa MP David Littleproud has called for an effective boycott of Suncorp. “Over the last few years we have seen a significant change in the way our customers in Stanthorpe and Goondiwindi, and surrounding regions, engage with us. “Increasingly, customers are choosing to use technology to complete their everyday banking. “The decision to close a physical store is never taken lightly, but we’re
finding that fewer customers choose to do their banking at the store.” David Littleproud has labelled the move a “debacle” and said he is making “urgent representations” to Suncorp to access the data it has used to determine the need for the closures. “I recently met with Suncorp Bank, where I was not only disturbed to learn of its decision to close branches in Kingaroy, Miles, Goondiwindi and Stanthorpe but also frustrated the bank is refusing to release its customer usage rates to justify their decision,” Mr Littleproud said. “The bank needs to come clean about this data to prove why it’s shutting branches because I believe these rural communities are entitled to know the trigger point that kicked off this blanket closure. “Whether you or your business banks with Suncorp, or you’re insured with one of the 10 companies owned by Suncorp, I ask customers to vote with their feet and no longer support a bank that doesn’t support rural communities.” Have your say on our Facebook page.
Hit-run hearing is adjourned THE trial of a man accused of the hit and run death of a cyclist on the Inglewood-Millmerran Road on Anzac Day 2014 has been adjourned until a future sitting of the Warwick District Court, and may not be heard again until 2017. Geoffrey Joseph Sleba is charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and leaving the scene of an accident. Former Tamworth vet Dr Martin Pearson died in the incident. The trial last week in Warwick before Judge Deborah Stevens was adjourned on the second day after Mr Sleba’s defence counsel told Judge Richards that new evidence had been sprung on them by the Crown which could change the course of the trial. A jury was empanelled but was dismissed after lunch on the second day of the trial. The case is due to be reheard in Warwick District Court during the next available sittings, which could be as late as February next year. Mr Sleba is on bail awaiting the next hearing of the case. Dr Pearson’s family and his supporters and Mr Sleba’s supporters were present for both days of the trial.

Quite a show THE 1866 Melbourne Cup won by The Barb is the earliest known Melbourne Cup in its original state. First run in 1861, the Melbourne Cup was a cup in name only, with prizes including a gold watch and cash purse. The first official trophy cup was awarded in 1865. The 1865 trophy was sold by its owner, who reportedly found it unattractive. It was rebranded and presented as the Flemington Hunt Club Cup. The 1866 trophy is therefore the oldest Melbourne Cup in original condition. The National Museum of Australia acquired the 1866 cup in 2012. The Barb, regarded as the first great Australian racehorse was trained by ‘Honest’ John Tait, the ‘Father of the Australian Turf’. The National Museum also holds the 1867 Melbourne Cup won by ‘Sydney’ Tim Whiffler and trained by Tait’s great rival, Etienne de Mestre. Other collection highlights include the 1934 Melbourne Cup won by Peter Pan, and the heart of champion racehorse Phar Lap. When the Melbourne Cup was first run in 1861, there were two organising committees controlling horse racing in Victoria, the Victorian Turf Club (1852) and the Victorian Jockeys Club (1857). The Melbourne Cup was introduced in 1861 by the Victorian Turf Club to trump the success of Victorian Jockey Club races such as the Two Thousand Guineas. As a handicap race, the Melbourne Cup introduced a level

The two competing organisations disbanded in 1864, before merging to form the Victorian Racing Club, which has controlled racing in Victoria and the Melbourne Cup ever since. Although the Melbourne Cup today is well known in Australia for being run on the first Tuesday in November, this hasn’t always been the case. The 1866 Melbourne Cup race was run on a Thursday, and in 1867 the Cup was run in October. It wasn’t until 1875 that the race was run on the first Tuesday of November. Although the three-handled loving cup is widely recognised as the traditional cup design, this has only been the case since 1919. Before then the cups came in a variety of styles, with each year having a completely
original design. Some years no trophy was presented at all. In fact, for the first few decades of the race, it was more common for no trophy to be awarded. The winner of the 1861 Melbourne Cup was awarded a gold watch, and for the next two years a cash purse was the major prize. A trophy was first awarded in 1865. The owner of the winning horse Tory Boy, Mr Marshall, is claimed to have described the English-made trophy as a monstrosity. He immediately sold it to the Flemington Hunt Club, which rebranded it as the trophy for its annual cup. This trophy therefore is now inscribed as the Flemington Hunt Club Cup awarded to the 1873 winner, Babbler. This trophy was sold in the 1970s by Christies and is now owned by wine merchant Wolf Blass.

Local names bridge the recognition gap FOUR newly constructed bridges have been named in honour of local residents following a decision by Southern Downs Regional Council at its general meeting on Wednesday 26 October, following a period of public consultation. Southern Downs mayor Tracy
Dobie said the council was keen to seek the community’s input to determine names for the new bridges. “Naming these new bridges is a visible way of recognising and commemorating those individuals who have contributed to the local area or the broader region,” she said.
Portfolio councillor for transport and infrastructure Cr Marika McNichol said all of the nominated names were recognised for their contribution to the community, whether for civic, voluntary or military services, family reasons or just because of the locality.
The new bridge names are the ‘Charlie Fraser Bridge’, on Lyndhurst Lane; the ‘Bellingham Bridge’, on Bellinghams Road; the ‘Jacob Benz Bridge’, on Sandy Creek Road; and the ‘Tom Dunn Bridge’, on Mullins Road.

With the ‘most famous’ rodeo in town, Warwick’s the place to be By Jeremy Sollars IT WOULDN'T be rodeo weekend in Warwick without the chance of a storm, but it won’t deter the competitors or the crowds from heading to Australia’s ‘most famous’ rodeo. There is a rich history attached
to the Warwick Rodeo and having a win here is a hugely significant notch on the belt, whether you’re a rodeo competitor or a campdrafter. Ours may not be the biggest in the country in terms of venue or numbers but it’s the most coveted rodeo and campdrafting event on the

WOULD the menu differ from Manus Island detention centre to Nauru? Watching the recent ABC account of the tortured children of Nauru, it was not evident in the appearance of the tortured. The Manus menu includes meat and seafood, quiche Lorraine, Chu Chu Ching meat curry, sweet and sour meatballs, Indian-style chicken curry, honey-baked chicken, low-fat chicken spinach, curried shrimp crepes, and Elumas curry (mutton curry). There is a vegetarian list of nine different dishes made from eggs, deep fried potatoes, tomatoes, spinach, jackfruit, tofu with spinach, and eggplant. Rice and breads consist of eight different types including shrimp-fried rice, ghee rice with green peas and milk rice. Miscellaneous includes Irish eggs, cream soup, Per’s pumpkin pickle, mango chutney, prawn and chilli paste and tamarind chutney. Desserts and sweets are easy soda cracker dessert, bread pudding, mango mousse, caramel pudding, carrot cake, Watalappan, papaya and lime jello, and coconut-stuffed pancakes. Drinks and snacks: cheese puffs, cutlets, fish cutlets and Rasma. So it is no wonder the complaining children of Nauru looked so healthy and hearty in their Island paradise! Melba Morris, Allora.
THE main topic of SBS 2’s “The Feed” on Tuesday 18 October was the opposition of a majority in the Maranoa electorate to the idea of 'same-sex marriage’. Many, including myself, are understandably very disappointed that SBS’s pre-arranged interview with me which went for a number of minutes was cut to mere seconds. The amount of time given on the program to those advocating 'same-sex marriage’ was disproportionate, as is often the case, in this vital debate. I was asked whether I believe that gay men are going to hell. The general trend of my reply was that I don’t pretend to be the judge - it is God the Creator who has made the rules and carries out judgment. God says in his Word, the Bible, that those who pursue a number of different lifestyles (including homosexuality) will not go to heaven (1 Corinthians 6 and other Scriptures). God’s word is eternal and doesn’t change despite the world’s ever-changing opinions and values. Marriage as ordained by God between a man and a woman must not be treated as a plaything. Any experiment by those seeking to justify their chosen lifestyle can only detrimentally change our society and undermine the family structure. Peter Wiggins, Warwick.

Full bloom garden city
Casey’s tips
FREE Times Gardening Columnist BEATRICE HAWKINS captured the blooming wonderful scenes at the Warwick Horticultural Society’s Spring Flower Show last week, and shares her latest gardening musings with our readers ... THIS week has proved this title to be true, and judging by the 588 entries in all classes at the annual spring flower show organised by the Warwick Horticultural Society, it is also a city of gardeners. Thank you to all those who participated, without you there would be no show, and congratulations to those that won prizes at what was one of the largest flower show held in Queensland. St Mary’s Hall was filled with a fabulous array of flowers and vegetables and anyone that missed out should put it in the calendar as a must see for this time next year. Everything from beautiful flower arrangements, great vegetables, native flowers, exotic orchids and bromeliads, iris in many forms and just too many varieties of other flowers to mention, were on show. Special mention has to be made of the huge quantity, spectacular colour and quality, of roses that were exhibited. The perfume was beautiful. Earlier in the week I was delighted to be able to see Annette Russell’s beautiful rose garden, situated, aptly, in Rose Street, Killarney. This is a new garden, only three years old, with an amazing 460 plus roses all named and dated. Annette is a devoted gardener, keen to share her years of knowledge and has her garden open to the public until the end of the month. If you get the opportunity, it should not be missed. A flower that has caught my attention again recently is the beautiful deep blue spikes of echium. It seems to thrive in a wide variety of climates and blooms well adding height and definition to a landscape. I’ve seen it thriving deep in the south Island of New Zealand, here in Warwick and further north, from coast to inland. On researching it further, I found out why it is so hardy ... it is a relative of the similarly coloured noxious weed ... Patterson’s curse!!! In fact one of the growing notes I read included that they thrive in nutrition depleted sandy soil with little water!! I do believe they have a place in a garden if you have the space and the dedication to contain them as they seed prolifically and could become a problem as has Patterson’s curse. It was introduced as a garden plant and remember, the definition of a weed is only a plant out of place!! Floral window displays will be in windows over the rodeo weekend. Entries must be in by 5pm Thursday for judging Friday morning. Take time to look and appreciate people’s creativity - and see photos in next week’s Free Times. The next item on the agenda for the Horticultural Society is a bus trip to Stanthorpe on Friday 18 November to take in the delights of the area and all are welcome to come along. Tickets are available as usual from Danny Lyons. Spring Flower Show presentations This is certainly not a complete list of winners but is a record of the trophies awarded. What’s On Heroine’s plan pans out WHAT’S a girl to do when she marries the man she loves only to have him set her an impossible challenge and then march off to fight a foreign war? You’ll soon find out when Stanthorpe Little Theatre presents ‘All’s Well That Ends Well’ by William Shakespeare on 4, 5 and 6 November under the stars at 7pm sharp each night at Bungawarra Wines, Ballandean. You’ll be surprised by Helena, possibly Shakespeare’s most resourceful heroine, who will go to any length to get her man. You will also be surprised by Shakespeare in this rarely performed but astonishingly bold play. Classified as one of his “problem” plays, it is fascinating because it asks difficult, unpleasant questions while offering no easy resolutions. How many marriages are truly equal, happy and without serious compromise? Does the end justify the means? Is it truly all well if it ends well? Co-director Christopher Desgrand said in Shakespeare’s day men played both male and female roles, with

Army helps world By Joyce Marsh, Woodenbong Correspondent OVER the last 12 months the 8th/9th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (8/9 RAR) Brisbane, have deployed over 400 soldiers in four separate operations in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and the last Battalion returned to Australia in July. It came time for extensive exercises and Commanding Officer of 8/9 RAR Lieutenant Colonel James Hammett decided to put his Battalion through it’s paces in the dense country of Unumgar State Forest just ten kilometres southeast of Woodenbong in NSW, where 600 of the Australian Army’s finest infantrymen and women slogged up and down some of the steepest hills and densest jungle that Australia has to offer. The exercise was based from the Woodenbong showgrounds and involved the Battalions Rifle Companies and supporting elements. After several days the activity concluded with the battalion conducting a forced march back to the showgrounds to take part in an Open Day for members of the public and local community. To the amazement of the visitors who attended the Open Day, the Army put on a real show with interactive activities. These included personal contact, the children using metal detectors improvising finding land mines, using night vision goggles, camouflage face painting, rides in the Bushman Tanks, handling a machine gun, give-aways of hats and drink bottles and a commentated mock battle on the hill which included smoke bombs. For this day, the Army Officer of-

The Army put on a real show at the open day at Unumgar State Forest near Woodenbong. fered the Woodenbong community a fundraising opportunity to raise funds for a local cause. The chosen recipients were four of Woodenbong’s talented children who represent our community, school and Australia by their pursuits, three of which in sport and one education. The recipients are: Remy Leonard for Archery representing Australia in Turkey, Ireland, USA and New Zealand; Katelyn Grimmett for Touch Football in New Zealand and in 2017 for Futsal in California; Shallin Fuller for Touch Football in New Zealand; and Isaiah Hickling
who won the Prestigious Arts Scholarship and studies at the Whitehouse Institute of Design in Sydney. All this travelling is expensive and were recognised for their need of assistance. A great effort by generous local volunteers who pulled the opportunity together in short time, and with the soldiers and visitors who supported it, it raised $1800, then Rod Moreton of the Woodenbong Riding Club rallied and added a $200 donation, giving the children $500 each. The presentations to the children were made by WPA President Christine Reid and Jody Dickens at

Kickstarter for businesses QUEENSLAND small businesses keen to fast track growth to create jobs and grow the economy will be supported by the State Government’s new Accelerate Small Business grants program. Small Business Minister Leeanne Enoch launched the grants at DestinationQ in Mackay this week with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and said the program would provide targeted assistance for small businesses to engage high-level
experts to boost business growth. “By accelerating growth, this program will enable small businesses to grow and employ - meaning more jobs for Queenslanders,” Ms Enoch said. “The Accelerate Small Business grants offer up to $10,000 per business, which must be matched by the participant, to either access one-on-one mentoring or put in place an advisory board. “Through our successful Mentoring
for Growth program we have seen evidence of how enabling small business to add these elements to their business toolkit has helped them grow their business and employ. “Businesses mentored in 2014/15, reported that in 2015/16 they had increased employment by 12 per cent, turnover by seven per cent and gross profits by 18 per cent.” Ms Enoch said the Accelerate Small
Business grants will build on the momentum created by the Mentoring for Growth program and help take businesses to the next level. “Accelerate is aimed at businesses that have reached a certain level of maturity and are ready to take the next step,” she said. IT’S time for punters to sharpen their pencils, pins, read their stars, order their once-a-year form guides from newsagents and follow their chosen method of selecting their Melbourne Cup fancy. The Melbourne Spring Carnival has already served up a delightful entree of racing. The sensational win of Jameka in the Caulfield Cup set the stage for another amazing carnival, however it was the sheer brilliance of another wonder mare - Winx - that has stolen the hearts and imagination of seasoned punters and sometime racing enthusiasts with her breathtaking win in last Saturday’s Cox Plate. Unfortunately, unlike a group of local racing enthusiasts who were on track, I had to settle for watching history unfold in the warmth of my lounge room. I have been privileged to be there to watch So You Think win the Cox Plate - one of the jewels in racing’s crown - and saw the mighty Black Caviar in the flesh as she blew fields away on several occasions. I felt privileged to be at Randwick last year when this champion mare put away the Epsom field in style. All of those wins were nothing compared to the stunning win of Winx on Saturday, as she warmed the hearts of frozen race goers on the coldest of days to claim back to back Cox Plate wins. Simply awesome. We will not see the mare again this spring after Chris Waller confirmed she will be spelled and set for more autumn riches and perhaps a tilt at a third Cox Plate. The sensational Cox Plate Day will be a hard act to follow at Flemington on Derby Day, Saturday and the main event Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday. Sacred Elixir heads the Derby betting while history awaits James Cummings if he can salute with either of his hopes - Good Standing and Prized Icon - in a race his grandfather Bart made his own. Look for a good run from Valadero from the all-conquering Waller camp. On Tuesday, Caulfield Cup winner Jameka heads the Cup fancies along with Hartnell, who may have had time to recover from the windburn he received after Winx shot past him in the Cox Plate. I’m leaning towards Exospheric which means you can possibly put a line through it. Good luck with your selections as we saw last year horse racing allows dreams to come true for the true believers and this week we have been left in awe of the pure power and magic of another magnificent animal. - Casey RAIN FAILS TO DAMPEN SPIRITS STANTHORPE Golf Club hosted visitors from Tenterfield, Warwick, Toowoomba and as far north as Maryborough, and many points in between joined a big contingent of local golfers for the Stanthorpe Open weekend. Unfortunately, the wet weather disrupted play in the 4BBB stableford on Saturday but could not dampen player’s spirits. Conditions were much improved on Sunday when the single events were played. A good field braved the conditions early on Saturday morning but as conditions deteriorated and the rain became heavier, many players abandoned ship. There were a few true mud-larkers who persisted. Wes Smith and Hayden Smith proved to be the best navigators returning a score of 45 points taking out their second win in best ball events in just a few weeks. Swimming through the conditions to take second place with a score of 43 points was the team of Rob Reeves and Keith Allen.
Michael and Lilly Simpson accept the Southern Downs Billycarts Inter Town Challenge Cup from SDRC Councillor Yve Stokes on behalf of the Ballandean School and community. Sunday morning the rain abated as the sun peeped through allowing for vastly improved conditions for the single. In the men’s Open stroke event three players returned the lowest score of 76 for the round. James Haining, a visitor from the Gailes Golf Club, had the best of the countback to take the top honour the best score of the Open. A countback was also required to determine the golfer with the best nett on the day. Luke Beilby from Inglewood had an anxious wait before learning he had been awarded the prize for his score of nett 68. In the A Division of the Open, Geoff Hinze (Warwick) collected best gross score and Mark Peters (Goombungee) best nett 69. In B Grade, Alan Kerr with 85 had best gross score while Aaron Simmers collected the nett prize for his score of 68. Nino Capuzzo (Goombungee) recorded lowest gross score of 91 and John McLennan (Laidley) the best nett score (69) in C Grade. The ladies played a single stableford event in a very competitive field. The overall winner with 34 points was Neta Thouard. There were also three divisions decided in the Ladies competition. Rachael Hendry (31), Jennifer Sparkes (33) and Rosemary Fawdon (34) each won their respective divisions. Runners-up in divisions were Kay Webb (27), Madeline Jarman (31) and Lorraine Evans (31). Pro-pins and pin shots and long drives were awarded during the day and mention must be made of the men’s winner, James Haining. Haining generously sponsored the pin shot at three which was won by Ken Hines (Tenterfield). Another noteworthy result was Darryl Boekholt’s win in the accuracy drive. Boekholt not only had the longest drive but also the straightest, finishing right on the line. Overall, despite the weather intervention, the Open weekend was declared a great success. The Stanthorpe club and hardworking and slightly frazzled organisers were extremely grateful to the large number of players who travelled so far to participate. The support of sponsors Maddie’s Gift Gallery, who have been involved in the Open for many years and the City Golf Club who have been sponsoring Open golf days in the region for a number of years contributed greatly to the success of the weekend. The Club would like to thank Jim Grassick for representing the City Golf Club during the presentation. A special thank you to the club members who volunteered their time both before and during the carnival. Greenkeeper Bill once again presented the course in magnificent order and drew plenty of very positive comment.
This weekend it is back to normal golf competition on Saturday with a Two Ball Ambrose sponsored by M & D Auto Parts scheduled. This event has been held for a number of years and is gaining in popularity. Members and visitors are welcome on the day and the event will have a shot gun start at 11.45am with registration by 11.30am. On Sunday, Inglewood Golf Club will host the replay of the Inglewood Open. For those players who have arranged bus travel the departure time from the Stanthorpe Clubhouse is 7.30am. Departure time is a 7.30am from the clubhouse. A reminder to players - don’t be late, it’s a long way to walk. BOWEN AND DUDGEON WINNERS SUNDAY dawned a much better day for shooters on the Inglewood Sporting Shooters range and much better conditions for those competing in the Practical Shooting Comp and Action Pistol. Winner of the Practical Shooting competition was Iain Bowen who outscored placegetters Jason Lewis and Peter Russell. Stephanie Dudgeon took the honours in the Action Pistol competition relegating Jason Lewis into another second place with Glen Small taking third place in the shoot. Sunday the club is holding a working bee which will be followed by pistol shooting once the tough stuff is done. It is that time of the year when thoughts turn to Christmas preparations and our diaries start to fill with Christmas party dates. The club have set down this year’s Christmas party shoot for the weekend of 10-11 December. At this time, it seems likely Open Day will be held on the 11th and all and sundry will be welcome to join members and experience the chance to fire pistols, rifles etc. A word of warning for all moving around the range and elsewhere - snakes are on the move too, so be careful. SPOTLIGHT ON CLIFTON RACING ALL eyes were on the Clifton Racecouse last weekend as the club celebrated the running of the 2016 Clifton Cup. Despite the rain, the track was in good condition for the five race card, and a good crowd supported the annual event. Beaudesert trainer Greg Cornish and jockey Sarah Drake combined to win the Pacific Seeds/Pershouse Rural Clifton Cup with Clangoranda. The six-yearold gelding started at $11 despite a good fourth at his last start in Lismore, and in a tight finish defeated Chilli Beach who backed up after a good second in Stanthorpe the previous weekend and Red Bohemia.
Oakey trainer Patrick Sexton got his day off to a good start winning the first, the Emerald Grains Class B with Kavalong. The four-year-old Raheen Stud bred gelding made light of his 60kg impost beating Man Over Board and Burketown Larrikin by four lengths. It was the first leg of a race to race double for Sexton who won the next race - the PB Agrifood Benchmark 65 with Squeemi. Apprentice Jed Hodge claimed 2kg on the mare who started at $6 and in another tight finish got the nod ahead of Reddamour and Rhiateen Road. The third event, the Ray Bunch QTIS Maiden Plate was won by the lightly raced Penny A Pinch. Having only her third race start, the mare backed up a recent second at Wondai with a solid one length win over equal favourites Sequoia Miss and Sir Bam for her connections trainer Sheree McEwan, owner Mrs J Simpson and apprentice jockey Michael Shrapnel. The final event on the five race program the Clifton Real Estate Felton Produce Maiden over the 1580m journey saw another tight finish. Oakey-trained galloper Sakan snatched a narrow win over more fancied rivals Major Bo and Put the Rope Away bringing the curtain down on another successful country cup meeting in the region. BUSY WEEK FOR MALLET ENTHUSIASTS IN recent Association Croquet games, Pat Schnoor and Heather Widderick teamed up and defeated the pairing of Effey Russell and Val Shephard 26-10. In this game, Schnoor played very well and had two breaks of four. Meanwhile Grace Howard and Val Richards defeated Andrea Denkewitz and Carol Verwey 13-9. Grace Howard led the scoring with a break of five hoops in a row. Several of the Golf Croquet crew were unavailable for games this week. With nine players available, one player was forced to play to balls. In the first round Justin Liddy and Judy Locke scored a 7-5 win against Liz Ellway and Dianne Wren. Justin and Liz both played well and each scored four hoops while the remaining group played Triples. Elaine Brown, Marian Castles and Val Fancourt went down 6-7 in a very close game, defeated by Teresa Pyne and John Castles. In the second round of games Elaine Brown and Judy Locke took on Marian Castles and Liz Ellway in a game that finished in an eight all draw. John Castles, Dianne Wren and Val Fancourt scored 11 hoops against their opponents Justin Liddy and Teresa Pyne six. John Castles was in excellent touch in this game scoring eight hoops in an exceptional effort.

Winner of the Border Open 1000 was Warwick visitor Cyril Brown in the flashy cart 25, who proved red ones do go faster. ALMOST CRICKET STANTHORPE cricketers finally got on the ovals last Saturday after a delayed start to their season, only to have the opening games thwarted by the weather. The game between Valleys and Wanderers looked to be very evenly matched before rain interrupted the game. Wanderers’ batsmen were handling the conditions and the score was 4/106. Adrian Hill had scored 56 runs while Damian Anderson had taken two wickets before play was abandoned. Souths and Tenterfield also opened their season and Souths were confident of a win after bowling their opponents out for 86. A likely win was stymied by the heavy rain. With both games abandoned mid-afternoon all four teams have started their season with two points apiece. COW OF A MYSTERY NOT exactly sport but how many animal lovers around Stanthorpe noticed the disappearance of Camembert Jones, the white cow which used to reside on the lawn outside the Southern Downs Vet premises. The mysterious disappearance of Ms Camembert has been revealed. There has been no sinister kidnap nor has misfortune become the bovine. In fact, I hear she will be back shortly after a cow of a makeover. Keep your eyes open for the transformed bovine who is set to reclaim her position of influence - a cow with a totally moo look. She’s sure to brighten up your day. BILLYCARTS HIT THE BORDER A LARGE crowd of supporters lined Glen Lyon Street in Wallangarra on Sunday as the Border Billycarts hurtled down the course after the events scheduled for Saturday were postponed due to the heavy rain. Plenty of racers graced the starting line in a wide variety of carts some we have seen at previous billycart events in the district and some new interesting and ingenious designs. The celebrity races early in the day set the tone for racing throughout the day with plenty of good fun and close racing. SDRC Councillor Yve Stokes was in sync with her machine outgunning the Tenterfield Deputy Mayor and Member for Southern Downs, Lawrence Springborg, who proved he’s up for any challenge. The Border 1000 Open Challenge was a hotly contested event. After some very solid form in the heats and semi-finals it was Warwick visitor Cyril Brown in the flashy number 25 red cart,

who claimed the major prize. The Wallangarra and Tenterfield Police mounted their own State of Origin challenge and the Border Post and Free Times went head to head in the Media Challenge. The NSW Blues, unlike their football team, were able to nail a win setting up another cross-border rivalry. At the wheel for the Free Times in the Media Challenge was intrepid snapper Terry West, while the Border Post left their chances up to a clearly nervous Liana Turner. After some tips from the experts the pair were loaded away in their respective carts and faced the starter. A little like Lawrence Springborg earlier in the day, our Terry had a few wobbles at the start while the Border Post staffer exploded off the start and was never headed. Despite their early anxiety, the pair were full of smiles after the race, ready to have another go declaring it as much fun as it looks. Winner of the junior Border 1000 as well as the 12-15 Year age group was Sidney Hollingsworth. After results of the recent billycart event held in Warwick were collated, Cr Stokes presented the Southern Downs Billy Cart Inter Town Challenge Cup to Ballandean. The Ballandean State School will display the trophy for the next 12 months. Accepting the trophy on behalf of the Ballandean School and community was Michael Simpson and his cart racing daughter Lily. Lily who has been billycarting for three years is earning a winning reputation - following successes in recent events she won two categories on Sunday - the 5-7 Years and also the 8-11 Years. After the rain interruption on Saturday, event organisers were thrilled with the numbers of cart racers and spectators who supported the event on Sunday. Roll on 2017 - I hear plans are already in place to modify many of the carts while our very own snapper may take that long to come to terms with his defeat and is already talking strategies to avenge his defeat. CONDAMINE NOTCH UP ANOTHER WIN MARYVALE Condamine batsmen and bowlers showed plenty of class in their win over Allora at Slade Park on Sunday. On a pitch slightly affected by Saturday’s rain, captain Andrew Ryan chose to bat first, hoping to get some movement out of the ball on a drying wicket in the latter stages of the game. In a good batting display that extended right down the order, Maryvale set their opponents a 223 run target after openers Dave Walker and Jason Steketee set the platform with an 83-run
partnership. Steketee and Rob Lindsay topped the Maryvale batting both scoring 55 runs. Best with the ball for Allora were Luke Cullen and Sean Bryson - each bagged a pair in tough bowling conditions. Allora started their innings in convincing fashion and at drinks were on target with the score at 2/64. Luke Cullen took 2/33 and Sean Bryson 2/44 for Allora. The fall of the wicket of Cam Masters swung the game in Maryvale’s favour. The handy number four was batting aggressively when he was dismissed. One of the highlights of the game was the impressive catching of Maryvale youngster Will Gordon who is quickly earning a reputation as one of the safest fielders in the Warwick competition. Gordon’s good fielding backed up the efforts of the bowlers. Dave Walker was on the spot with the new ball taking 2/18 in his six overs. Lindsay Gordon and Tom Bourke broke the back of the Allora batting finishing with 3/10 from four overs and 3/12 from five respectively. In the end it was a classy all-round performance by Maryvale dismissing Allora for 111 to win by six wickets. COLTS CONTINUE WINNING FORM IN a rain interrupted game in Allora on Saturday, Warwick Hotel Colts continued their impressive start to the season with their fourth win from as many games defeating Railway Hotel Rascals by 11 runs. Colts set Allora a big run chase as they piled on 260 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their innings. It was a good performance from the Colts batsmen headed by Fraser McVeigh, who finished the innings 52 not out. He was well supported by good performances from Kev Poole (50), Nick Inmon (47), Geoff Thorley (35) and Taegan Inmon 21 not out. Cameron Peterson caught the attention of the fielding side smashing the first four deliveries he faced to the boundary on his way to an entertaining 18. When rain forced play to be abandoned in the 22nd over, good bowling performances from Colts had Rascals struggling at 8/142. Best bowling figures came from Sean McKendry and Cam Peterson who each claimed three wickets. With totals revised, Colts hung on for a welldeserved 11 run win.

Member for Southern Downs, Lawrence Springborg, got a little sideways in the starting gates at the Border Billycart Bash. Fortunately there were plenty of constituents on hand to straighten things out for the popular local member. RAIN CAUSES CONFUSION WHEN rain forced play to be abandoned in the game between Redbacks and Sovereign Animals on Saturday, there was some confusion over who had won the game. Sovereign Animals were chasing the Redbacks’ score of 155 after Morgan Gilchrist top-scored with 44 on the Queens Park synthetic. Best of the bowlers in Sovereign’s innings in the field was Scott McCulloch who bagged five wickets in an eight over spell. In reply, Sovereign Animals batsman Glen Doyle was on 21 with the score at 7/95 when rain forced play to be abandoned. Star Redbacks footballer Tyhe Clarkson showed he’s not too dusty with another type of ball taking four wickets for 29 runs helping Redbacks restrict their opponents score. Sam Waterford also bowled well taking three wickets for 29. Players left the field after 21 overs and initially the game was awarded to Animals, however a review of the association rules determined Redbacks had claimed their first win in the competition with more runs on the board in the 21st over than their opposition. All Warwick cricketers now have a weekend off to enjoy all the highlights of Warwick Rodeo weekend. HARD WORK BRINGS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP ARCHERY is one of those sports which many of us push to the back of the queue, unless it is Olympic competition with gold medals on the line. However, a young Stanthorpe sharp-shooter, Nysha Willaton, has given us all a good reason to show more interest in the sport after she won a world championship in her age group at the recent Wold Championships held in Wagga Wagga. Over 550 competitors from England, Wales, Scotland, Estonia, Germany, Hungry, India, South Africa, Namidia, USA, New Zealand and Australia converged on Wagga Wagga for the 2016 World Field Archery Championships. The competitors ranged across junior and senior ranks competing in a variety of disciplines. After her impressive performance, 16-year-old Nysha now has her sights set on the 2018 World Championships in Johannesburg and is hoping her hard work in her chosen sport will allow her to travel the world competing. In the meantime, she is the star member of the Granite Belt Bowmen Club.
