Men to bear silent witness at women’s violence ceremony By Luke Voogt Men will pay their respects in silence at tonight’s (Friday) launch of a first-time exhibition for Reclaim the Night Geelong. Men could attend the Wathaurong ceremony launching the exhibition but must remain silent in line with cultural protocol, organisers said. Reclaim the Night’s Nancy Donkers called the exhibition an artistic journey from inequality to equality. “The exhibition is about the prevention of violence against women and challenging the attitudes and values that support it,” she said. Simply Hear Me will launch at community service agency Karingal’s Eastern Hub with about 40 artworks depicting the efforts of women to gain equality over a number of decades. The exhibition will be part of Reclaim the Night’s month of action on violence against women. “It’s such a big issue and it’s become more recently known in the community,” Ms Donkers said. Reclaim the Night Geelong will exhibit the works at Eastern Hub and Geelong Performing Arts Centre during November.

Elderly trio escape blaze By Luke Voogt Three elderly women have narrowly escaped injury after their car burst into flames on Geelongs’ ring road at Lovely Banks. The blaze caused traffic to bank up for more than a kilometre on Tuesday afternoon as social media posts confused the incident with a police chase near Lara around the same time. The women had just filled up at a nearby service station when they noticed something wrong, said Corio CFA senior station officer Ross Crompton.
“They were just driving down the road when their vehicle started to run rough.” The women pulled over into the emergency lane to check the engine of their Subaru Forrester, Mr Crompton said. “That’s when they noticed it was on fire.” The engine was ablaze initially but the flames soon engulfed the car, Mr Crompton said. Three Corio firetrucks and one from Geelong struggled to reach the blaze due to the traffic backing up along the ring road, he said. The firefighters brought the blaze under control in 10 minutes after eventually reaching the scene, he said.
“When police turned up traffic was backed up all the way to Anakie Road.” Mr Crompton said the fire left nothing but a charred ruin of the car. He said he believed that the cause was probably a mechanical fault. “Certainly, there were no suspicious circumstances.” A friend took the three women home to Melbourne, Mr Crompton said. The police chase around the same time ended with the arrest of two teenagers and a hunt for the driver after a suspected stolen car was dumped at Bell Post Hill.

Fencing shirked Geelong ratepayers will cover the full cost for fences bordering council-owned parks and reserves after City Hall decided to stop contributing half the money. City Hall said other Victorian municipalities were considering a “similar revision” of their half-cost fencing policies but were awaiting the outcome of the change in Geelong.

TAC, VicRoads target danger sites for safety upgrades By Luke Voogt VicRoads has earmarked four of the most dangerous roads around Geelong for safety upgrades with funding from the Transport Accident Commission (TAC). The authority has planned improvements for Geelong-Bacchus Marsh, Geelong ring and Anglesea roads and on the Princess Highway between Corio and Little River. VicRoads will spend $25.9 million to build flexible barriers and a median strip on GeelongBacchus Marsh Road late next year to prevent head-on crashes. The road recorded 19 accidents, including seven fatalities, in 12km near Balliang between 2008
and 2013, said VicRoads’ Mark Koliba. “Four times as many people die on regional roads than metropolitan roads,” he said. “Almost one quarter of serious injuries occur on high speed rural roads, mainly due to drivers running off the road or crossing the centre line and hitting other vehicles head-on.” The TAC has committed $1 billion over 10 years to its Safe System Roads Infrastructure Program (SSRIP) to help reverse the rising road toll. SSRIP projects had reduced intersection crashes by 35 per cent and run-off ’ crashes by 26 per cent, Mr Koliba said. “Our highest risk roads are being transformed
into some of the state’s safest.” SSRIP had already made Geelong roads safer and more reliable, Mr Koliba said. The program funded a raised safety platform at an intersection on the Surf Coast Highway and new roundabout at Gheringhap. Between 2008 and 2012 the highway had numerous crashes at its intersection with Kidman Avenue, including a number involving rightturning traffic. Safe Roads is one of the four pillars supporting the TAC’s Towards Zero vision. The other pillars are Safe Vehicles, Safe Speeds and Safe People. The TAC hopes to reduce serious injuries by 15 per cent and the Victorian road toll to less than 200 by 2020.
A “world-class” centre for research and development of high-tech fibres for manufacturing has opened at Waurn Ponds, Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson has announced. The Australian Research Council “hub” would provide vital work for Australian businesses to commercialise latest innovations in fibre materials, she said.
Ammos guaranteed City Hall will provide Geelong Amateur Football and Netball Club with a loan guarantee to complete a change-room upgrade worth almost $1 million. The City told the club to find finance for its share of project funding but that the council would have to act as guarantor so Ammos could secure pre-approval of the loan for its $162,000 contribution.

‘Politics’ hampering GOR By Luke Voogt The State Government is playing politics with Great Ocean Road repairs, according to an opposition MP. “What the Andrews Government needs to realise is this iconic road brings hundreds of millions of dollars into the Victoria’s tourism industry,” South Barwon MP Andrew Katos said. “You can’t close it every time we have heavy rain because Daniel Andrews and (Transport Minister) Luke Donnelan are refusing to spend money on it.” The road runs through Mr Katos’s seat and Polwarth, which are both Liberal electorates. “If you’re a Liberal held seat you get nothing,”
Mr Katos said. “If the Government can fund $10m to upgrade Trades Hall in Carlton why can’t they fund Australia’s most iconic road?” Mr Donnellan blasted Mr Katos’s comments, saying the Government had made a number of additional commitments to the road. “This is not the time for petty political games, not when people’s safety and livelihoods are on the line,” Mr Donnellan said. “Crews have been working day and night for the last few months to ensure safe access for residents and tourists on the Great Ocean Road.” Mr Donellan said the Andrews Government had spent millions of dollars on recent projects along the road, with more in the pipeline.
State coalition MPs have criticised the Andrews Government following federal Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson’s calls for extra funding. Ms Henderson called on the Victoria to match Canberra’s $25 million commitment to the road. The funding was in addition to a joint $50 million state and federal commitment in 2014, which was intended to last until 2018. VicRoads regional director Mark Koliba said the authority had spent more than $30 million of the funding on the ocean road, including $8 million from each government in the last financial year.
Wicked pair sold on city centre sidewalks’ biggest day Melbourne might host the race that stops the nation but central Geelong will also be a winner next Tuesday. Organisers expect tens of thousands of shoppers to descend on the city after 200-plus traders signed up for this year’s Central Geelong Sidewalk Sales. “This is central Geelong’s biggest shopping day of the year,” a spokesperson for the sales said. “It’s the day of the year people flock to central Geelong for a fantastic day out, to snap up a bargain, to enjoy a long lunch and to be entertained.” Last year’s sidewalk sales attracted more than 30,000 shoppers, with Central Geelong Marketing expecting a larger turnout this year. Central Geelong Marketing has added an extra dash of glamour to this year’s sales, appointing local stage performers Sophie Collins and Josh McGuane as ambassadors. The pair has been talking up the event as they prepare for leading roles in Footlight Productions’ latest show, Wicked. Central Geelong Marketing said a sidewalk sales “form guide” was available at centralgeelong. com.au/sidewalksales.

Double Take ‘Keep off the grass’ might be a cliched exhortation but in Geelong it’s a case of ‘Can’t keep up with the grass’. A combination of rising temperatures and soaked soil has the council’s mowing team struggling to match its workload. Some sites were too boggy to access with council mowers, explained City Hall’s Vicki Shelton (pictured), while in other places the grass was growing back faster than it could be cut. “We’re throwing all our resources at keeping the mowing on schedule,” Vicki said before warning of “heavy grass growth wellbeyond Christmas”. Sounds like Mother Nature’s winning the arm-wrestle in Geelong at least. Newspaper columnists sometimes cop flak for bungling facts but at least here in Geelong they’ve devised a simple solution. Rather than wade in with nuanced opinions or sharp observations on events and issues, they’re sticking to what they know best - themselves - as a round-up of this week’s contributions demonstrates. Monday’s scribe: “I’ve never been very flexible.” Tuesday’s: “I am the undisputed king of karaoke.” Wednesday’s: “Sometimes I eat lunch at 11.30am, other times not until 2pm.” And - get this - Thursday’s: “I need to be more positive.” How interesting! How very insightful! An awed Double Take would like to audition: “I play tuba in the nude.”

Geelong is staying put. And so is its reÄnery.
Its reÄnery supplies more than 50% of Victoria’s fuel while injecting about $200 million in wages and services into the local economy.
That’s what we’re like in Geelong. And that’s why Viva Energy is proud to be part of this town.

COLD COMFORT: Eddy Kontej in warmer days.
Travel cold feet? Not for our Eddy By Elissa Friday Former Geelong councillor Eddy Kontelj is bracing for six weeks operating heavy machinery in Antarctica for his employer. “This is an experience I have dreamt about for decades,” said Mr Kontelj, managing director of Caterpillar dealer William Adams. “The fact it’s now coming true gives me a feeling of extreme excitement, appreciation, privilege, exhilaration and also anxious nervousness. “The opportunity came about where they offered me a chance to get a better understanding of the environment that the equipment and people work in.” Mr Kontelj would represent William Adams in 10-member team from 12 November to late December, he said.

He would operate a Challenger MT865 tractor to shift large sleds loaded with supplies including fuel, equipment and essential supplies to France and Italy’s joint Concordia Research Station. “This experience will certainly provide me the opportunity to better understand and appreciate the environment and conditions and customers, products and people work in, including their challenges and requirements.” Mr Kontelj completed a diesel mechanic apprenticeship before working for 15 years in the mining industry which included three in Chile’s Andes Mountains where he battled thin oxygen and temperatures down to minus 40C. Mr Kontelj, who has set world records for staticcycling marathons on exercise bikes, said he underwent extensive physical and medical examinations to determine his suitability for the Antarctica job.

AGREED: Geelong council administrators Laurinda Gardner, Kathy Alexander and Peter Dorling. “It’s now time to implement all of these great initiatives.” Premier Daniel Andrews unveiled the Geelong Authority in August 2015 as an advisory committee to “break the deadlock” on major projects in Geelong. The authority would advise Planning Minister Richard Wynne to deliver “real action” for Geelong, Mr Andrews said. But 10 months later local Liberal MPs began criticising the authority for failing to deliver any projects despite $3.5 million in funding. South Barwon MP Andrew Katos called the committee a “token board” established to “deceive Geelong residents into thinking the government’s taking action”. Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson said the “powerless” authority should be disbanded if it was incapable of “doing the job”. Soon after the State Government gave the authority part credit for approving an $80 million Brougham Street building, naming the committee among several governmental bodies that “supported” the project.

A State Government committee that was branded as an “abject failure” at delivering major projects for Geelong is now responsible for helping revitalise the city’s heart. Geelong’s council administrators this week “agreed to work in partnership” with the Government’s Geelong Authority on projects to spruce up the city. The authority will take over from the Central Geelong Task Force, which included former mayor Darryn Lyons and deputy Michelle Heagney who were both sacked by the Andrews government along with the rest of Geelong’s council in April. The task force was “now no longer needed”, said administrators chair Kathy Alexander. She and fellow administrators Laurinda Gardner and Peter Dorling, formerly the authority’s chair until his council appointment, supported disbanding the task force at a meeting this week. Some former task force volunteers were now members of the authority, Dr Alexander said. She “looked forward” to working with them on a new Revitalising Central Geelong partnership with the authority. “Since its first meeting in July 2014 the task force has overseen a number of important improvements and enterprises in central Geelong,” Dr Alexander said. “These included the Malop Street Green Spine concept development and initial designs, the Little Malop streetscape, pedestrian bridge design and laneways concept development, the delivery of the Malop Street lab and community engagement for the CBD 40km/h speed zone. “The new Revitalising Central Geelong action plan builds on these key initiatives and will guide the future work to be undertaken through the State Government and council partnership.

Call to save last car factory jobs Funding programs for retrenched auto workers should focus on saving “strategically important jobs” in cities like Geelong rather than just creating new employment, according to a new study. Parliamentary Library Fellow Dr Tom Barnes recommended redesigning packages such as Geelong Region Innovation and Investment Fund (GRIIF), noting that Australia would join Saudi Arabia next year as the only G20s countries without vehicle manufacturing industries. Dr Barnes’ report was released in the wake of Ford closing its Geelong factory earlier this month, costing another 500 jobs in the city’s manufacturing industry. His study labelled the demise of Australian car manufacturing “a highly significant moment in the country’s economic and social history”. Dr Barnes, a Victorian Parliamentary Library Fellow, found that the likely national cost was 40,000 to 50,000 lost jobs but possibly more, with around half coming from Victoria. Geelong and parts of Melbourne would bear the brunt of the Victorian losses, he wrote. “Some of the affected regions are already rela-

tively disadvantaged in socio-economic terms, with higher-than-average levels of unemployment and lower-than-average levels of household income.” Dr Barnes noted that community groups, businesses and government were trying to “offset the negative impacts” but suggested changes to funding programs such as the GRIIF. “The design of regional adjustment funds should be reconsidered so the retention of strategically important jobs, particularly in the manufacturing sector, can be supported as well as the current stated policy goal of creating new and sustainable jobs. “Policymakers should carefully consider the effectiveness of measures in place to support the ongoing role of manufacturing, especially in regions affected by the auto industry transition.” Dr Barnes said possible industry assistance program changes included a sharper focus on “job-matching” retrenched workers’ skills with demand among non-automotive manufacturers and encouraging young people into manufacturing careers.
THE LANEWAYS PROJECT CREATING A VIBRANT NETWORK OF SPACES TO DISCOVER Building on the recent investment of the businesses in James Street and Little Malop Street between Moorabool and Gheringhap Street, the project will deliver streetscape upgrades to these streets and adjoining lanes. More opportunities for additional alfresco dining will be created. Enhancements include additional street trees and planting, public art, street furniture and improved lighting. The importance of this project is recognised by State and Local Government. Construction is anticipated to commence in early 2017 with completion prior to the Christmas period.

ANZAC SPIRIT: Corio MP Richard Marles congratulates Maggie Evans and Finn Dripps. 161011
(Louisa Jones)
Keeping Anzac spirit alive and well St Joseph’s and Clonard colleges won national recognition on Monday for their joint Anzac Day service earlier this year. St Joseph’s teacher and event organiser Annalee McKew said the spirit of Anzac was “certainly alive” at the colleges. “They’ve really embraced Anzac and they really understand it.” For Anzac Day this year the colleges partnered with the Geelong and District Vietnam Veteran’s Association, focussing on the Battle of Long Tan’s 50th anniversary. “They’re fantastic those guys,” Ms McKew said. The students explored Australia’s war history by visiting the RAAF museum, listening to veterans’ tales, simulating a Kokoda trek and making Anzac biscuits, among other activities. The day concluded with students commemo-
rating the lives of ANZACs through poetry, dance and letter reading - directed by former Clonard student and actor Amanda LaBonte. Federal Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan congratulated the colleges on winning the $3000 Anzac Day Schools’ Award out of 68 schools. The colleges won $2000 in 2015 as the best Victorian school in the awards, for their Centenary of Anzac commemorations, which they invested in this year’s activities. Ms McKew said they would again invest their prize money in Anzac Day, to make it even better next year. “I felt incredibly proud of the students and the staff who worked very hard to provide opportunities for young people to embrace the spirit of Anzac.”
City’s ‘wishlist’ holds what you need From page 1 But Bellarine MP and state minister Lisa Neville said she was focussed on election commitments like a Drysdale bypass and extension of Geelong’s bypass to the Bellarine Peninsula. The State Government had committed to infrastructure including Simonds Stadium’s redevelopment and various school and sport upgrades, she said. “Our first regional assembly next week will also enable the community to have a say in what they see as future priorities for Geelong and the Bellarine.”
South Barwon MP Andrew Katos said the opposition would consider the recommendations before the 2018 election. Some had merit but Torquay’s population had yet to warrant a railway line, he said. “That’s something I’m fully intending to consult the local community about.” Mr Katos was also wary of future governments closing local police stations to create the supersites. “The local community would not support that.” Infrastructure Victoria has called for public input on the draft. 9 GEELONG INDY Friday, 28 October, 2016

Home's history comes back to life By Luke Voogt
1215130-DJ05-16
Newtown’s Mary-Jane Walker was getting her hands dirty this week as she prepared to open her heritage garden to the public for the first time. “It’s been a good incentive to get the garden up to scratch,” she said. “You work really hard in the months beforehand to get it really beautiful.” The garden surrounds her historic Newtown home, which was likely to be 168 years old, MaryJane said. The exact age of the house is unknown but in the 1940s its owners found an 1848 coin among the foundations while renovating, she said. A number of Geelong’s historic figures have called the early-Victorian residence home, such as William Pye and Joseph Shaw. Pye would become one of the first instructors of what is now Gordon Tafe, while Shaw built many of city’s old churches. Mary-Jane became the property’s newest owner seven years ago and wanted her garden - which was in a sorry state - to honour the history of the house. Enter garden designer Stephen Read - who worked for the then Historic House Trust in Sydney - to bring it “back to life”. “He has a tremendous knowledge of plants and what works in different environments,” MaryJane said. “I’m happy to showcase this design because I believe in his ideas.” One of the first tasks was restoring three heritage-listed Norfolk pines which were probably as old as the house. “When we got there they were in a very bad state,” Mary-Jane said. The trees were now the favourite part of her garden. “We’ve worked very hard and they are looking incredibly healthy,” she said. Next was ripping up the property’s 1940s tennis court to create a large edible garden.

HERITAGE: Stephen Read's historic garden design will be on display this month. 161137 It garden has scores of vegetables and fruits, from guavas to pumpkins, and is home to MaryJane’s chickens and bees. “We’re eating things everyday out of the garden,” she said. “It’s like a farm in the middle of town.” A practicing artist with a PhD in molecular genetics, Mary-Jane has combined her love of art and science in her garden. “You’ve got to allow time for a garden to grow and develop,” she said. Stephen was at the property this week to help
Mary-Jane prepare the garden for the public. He designed it with its historical roots in mind. “It would have had its own orchard and kitchen garden,” he said, “there were no supermarkets back then.” Stephen chose plants which would grow with limited irrigation, like the homes of colonial Victoria. “Most of the plants that grow well in a heritage gardens tend to be drought-tolerant.” One of the garden’s newer and more unique features is its heritage pear tree walk.
Stephen sourced the pear trees from a nursery in Shepparton, which he said would have been commonplace in gardens in the 18th and 19th centuries. “We thought they might have been varieties that were planted around this house. I think it’s going to look amazing.” Mary-Jane’s garden will be one of three in the region open on 19 and 20 November for Rotary Victoria’s Garden Designfest. A culture of care Ocean Grove's Woodlands Preschool celebrated its 40 anniverary with an open day last Sunday. Guests enjoyed activities including a jumping castle, facepainting, magician Dazzling Dan, a sausage sizzle and much more. Preschool committee president Danielle Wilks says Woodlands is a traditional kinder offering children a hands-on and community-based learning experience. “Woodlands Preschool has a real family spirit about it,” Danielle says. “Always allowing and encouraging parents/ carers and extended family to be involved in the education of their little ones. “We're focussed on recognising the uniqueness of each child and family and to help them gain an understanding and respect for themselves and others.” Woodlands Preschool is at 15 Wyatt Street, Ocean Grove, phone 5255 2349. The four-years program operates 8.30am to 1.30pm Monday to Friday, with children attending three mornings a week. The three-years program runs 2pm to 4.15pm Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Letters Mentally ill good neighbours I agree whole-heartedly with Kath Welch’s (Letters, 21 October) regarding community unhappiness around having a supported accommodation for people with mental illnesses in their neighbourhood. Ms Welch’s beautifully articulated letter said it all. I worked with mentally ill people for six years and a nicer bunch of people you couldn’t hope to find. They were suffering a debilitating illness, they were not psychopaths, but such is the level of stigma they have to live with. I would personally be perfectly happy to have such a facility in my local neighbourhood. Sandra Gangemi Bell Park
Bulk benefits for elderly The outlook of Michael J Gamble (Letters, 14 October) amazed me. His thoughts certainly did not sympathise with those who might benefit from bulk billing. He should research people who, from lack of available finances, do not visit non-bulk billing clinics until their underlying need demands they attend an overworked hospital emergency department, perhaps requiring an emergency vehicle trip to hospital. Mr Gamble might do a costing of these scenarios, too, and document their frailties. Perhaps he might do a survey around his home on the true cost of repairs offered by tradies. I attend one of those bulk billing clinics and thank those within for keeping my wife and I comfortable while coping with a variety of issues as we both head into our ninth decade. Andrews, Neville soft on crime
Ocean Grove's Woodlands Preschool.
More than a year ago Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville announced 150 more police officers for the City of Greater Geelong. She has since again boasted about that number in response to latest statistics on rising crime.
Buckets & Bouquets Buckets to Daniel Andrews for lecturing us on the need to take steps in preparation for a predicted dangerous fire season (Geelong Indy, 21 October). This after removing Ballarat’s major fire-fighting tool, a 7500-litre helicopter. What is he snaffling from Geelong to make us less safe? Terrified, St Albans Park Buckets to Great Ocean Road Coast Committee for allowing stormwater to create a virtual creek across the bottom of Torquay’s public boat ramp. Sand build-up makes the ramp hard enough to negotiate at the best of times, let alone with this new obstacle. Find a solution. Failure To Launch, Torquay Bouquets to a young couple when I slipped on wet grass while walking Yogi on Geelong’s waterfront. I’ve recovered physically but the embarrassment might take a little longer. Thank you for your concern and compassion. Sore And Wet Backside, Geelong
However, only eight additional first-response officers have been added to Geelong since 2014. The police association has now identified an immediate need for at least 63 more frontline officers in the Geelong region. Police association secretary Ron Iddles says officers are struggling with Geelong’s increasing demands and are strained to cover the region’s resource gaps, posing risks to them and community safety. Since June last year Geelong crime has risen 21 per cent, including a jump of almost 40 per cent in thefts. In the Bellarine electorate thefts have risen 31 per cent in a year and burglaries 20 per cent. Theft is up 72 per cent at Drysdale and Clifton Springs and burglaries have risen 121 per cent at

They reflect a trend under the Andrews Government. I shudder to think about next year’s numbers. For Labor to promise 400 officers in a term of government is just not enough to keep up with the state’s population growth of 100,000 people a year, let alone the increasing rate of offences under the Andrews Government’s soft approach to crime. Simon Ramsay MP Member for Western Victoria
World, ideas always changing Scientists observe, measure, hypothesise and draw conclusions. Homeostasis is a mechanism by which systems can be kept in a state of balance, such as the feedback mechanisms in living organisms. Earth itself, geared to sustain life, has means by which its functions can be brought back into harmony. The use of hydrocarbons has only been extensive since the beginning of the industrial revolution. Global warming and cooling have been happening for millennia. Humans, the most adaptive of all life, cannot live in harmony with the planet. For example, we have created a sea of synthetic rubbish in the ocean and we exploit and ruin the land for our greed and insatiable desires. Yes, we do need to question our human ideas and activities. Without debate and intelligent thinking there will be inertia and regression. Our sciences are imperfect. We still have much to learn. Unbiased discussion is a fundamental freedom that must be claimed and celebrated. It was hardwon - look at recent history. To be offended by free thought is arrogant in the extreme; a reaction that springs from ignorance and intolerance but which remains prevalent so it seems. If there are ideas to help the common good then let’s hear them - they are long overdue. J Jones Ocean Grove

Abba magic well covered When Michael Ingvarson finished university in 1994 he never thought he’d spend the next 22 years in an ABBA cover band. Ingvarson has played in BABBA as “Benny” for most of his adult life, belting out the hits of the Swedish pop icons. “And we’re not sick of playing them,” he said. The band started not long after Ingvarson finished studying music at the University of Melbourne. “I got a call from a girl I went to uni with,” he said. They and three others got together for a Battle of the Bands competition at the Royal Derby Hotel in Fitzroy. “There were 450 people at our first gig,” he said. “It got a pretty good response - we thought well ... we’ll do this for a while.” Two decades later - twice as long as the originals - BABBA is still going with numerous Australian and international tours under its belt. “At our peak we were doing 180 shows a year,” Ingvarson said. The band was a regular fixture in Geelong in its early days, he said. “At one stage we’d play down there every Friday.” Often the gigs wouldn’t finish until 3am and the band wouldn’t get back to Melbourne until 5am, he said. BABBA mimics the originals down to their Swedish stage-accents, Ingvarson said. “We feel like we do justice to their songs by playing them correctly with the right harmonies in the right places.” For Ingvarson, one of BABBA’s biggest accolades was Molly Meldrum’s description of the band as “dare I say it, as good as Abba”. “He played such a huge role in getting ABBA
Chopin for the classics lovers One of Australia’s most internationally acclaimed pianists, Piers Lane, will perform in Geelong next Saturday, as part of his latest tour. The London-based virtuoso will play the music of great Polish composer Chopin, in what promoters described as a treat for local music lovers. Lane has performed in the great concert halls of Europe and the world, and is the artistic director of the Australian Festival of Chamber Music and the Sydney International Piano competitions. His concerto repertoire exceeds 90 works and he has played with many of the world’s great ensembles including London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Lane has more than 50 CDs to his name including recordings of rare romantic piano concertos. Lane will perform Chopin by Candlelight at Geelong Performing Arts Centre at 8pm, 5 November. For piano lovers, the concert will feature works like Fantasie in F minor Op. 49, Bacarolle Op. 60, and Polonaise in F sharp minor.
MAMMA MIA: Tribute act BABBA will be back in Geelong next weekend. known in Australia,” he said. Ingvarson would go on to marry BABBA’s original Frida, who played with the band for 13 years.
Unlike the real Frida and Benny they’re still together with three children. The current line-up features its original Bjorn (James McDonald) and drummer (Paul Edsall).

If the reviews on social media are anything to go by, Sakuratei Japanese Cuisine in Manifold Heights is a gem. The addition to Geelong West’s culinary culture has been reviewed as one of the best Japanese restaurants outside Japan. And that’s from well-travelled tourists as well as locals who have discovered the authentic delicacies served with a minimum of fuss. The real strength of Sakuratei is the extensive menu, with everything from soups and entrees, main courses of ramen, udon, bento boxes and curries to desserts. The teriyaki chicken and beef have proved popular, along with the dumplings and hot-plate meals. Owner Flora says although some meals are not necessarily on the menu, the kitchen is happy to entertain special orders. A range of specials is available at the sushi bar along with a takeaway service – and all at very affordable prices. Not only are the various dishes freshly cooked, they’re served by friendly and knowledgeable staff. After four years in busy Shannon Ave, Sakuratei has developed a loyal band of regular customers, Flora says. Sakuratei also has a customer car park for eatin patrons. The restaurant is open 10am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 5pm to 10pm Sundays. Sakuratei is at 161 Shannon Ave, Manifold Heights, phone 5222 6668.

The 70’s & 80’s were a golden era of original music & fashion for the baby boomer & X generations. You may well cringe at old photo’s of perms & mullets, flares & flouro colored nylons, but odds are that anyone that spent there teenage or twenty’s years through this time will have fond memories when you hear the music of ABBA, The Sweet, Devo, Brian Ferry, the Village People, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Buggles & even Rocky Horror or any of the one hit wonder bands that dominated these eras.

For Melbourne-based singer Bloom, Amanda Canzurlo is just a mask for the world. “She’s a singing teacher, she’s wedding singer, she’s just an ordinary person,” she told the Indy. “But when I’m on stage I’m someone else Bloom is me.” Like Pink or Beyonce, her stage name defines her, she said. The 30-year-old singer will bring her latest “sell-out show” - The Adele and Amy Songbook - to Geelong next month. SOMEONE LIKE YOU: While there were Amanda Canzurlo AKA many Adele and Amy Bloom. Winehouse tribute acts, few combined the two artists, who were more closely connected than some might think, Bloom said. “It was actually one of Amy’s songs that inspired Adele to pick up the guitar and start writing.” The show was not an imitation of two modern greats, Bloom said. “It’s more just to celebrate their music. I didn’t actually realise how talented they were as songwriters until I sat down and did the show.” Bloom recently moved to Melbourne from Perth and released her first EP last year. “I came here for the first time when I was 18 and loved the vibe,” she said. “I felt I had grown as much as I could in Perth.” Bloom will perform for the first time in Geelong on 11 November at the Gateway Hotel.

Singer-songwriter Leah Flanagan will bring her smokey voice to Torquay for the first time next month for NaranaFest. The Darwin-born artist is touring the country promoting her new independent album Saudades. The album has a much more electric sound than her previous work, she said. “But the songwriting is still at the core of the record.” Flanagan spoke to the Indy after her third live performance in Brisbane since releasing the album in September. She said she loves playing around with songs she knows well on stage. “You give people a taste of what the album sounds like but with a bit more grunt.” “The songs have a different life when they are being played live - they kind of take on their own personalities.” Flanagan brings a little of her Italian, Irish and Aboriginal heritages to her music. “They’re all quite passionate cultures,” she said. A highlight of her career was singing a tribute to her grandmother - who was part of the Stolen Generation - at Melbourne Festival. Another has been collaborating with music legends like Sinead O’Connor and Paul Kelly. But Flanagan’s favourite duet so far has been with indigenous singer Ursula Yovich. “Everything about her voice is just stunning,” she said. “When you get to sing with someone like her it’s a luxury.” Flanagan was looking forward to playing at Narana alongside friends and peers. She said she keeps a close eye on the indigenous music scene for emerging artists. “It’s all a very close-knit community. There are

Labels promote better food choices Christine Couzens MP member for Geelong Unfortunately people have such busy lives these days that they do rely on fast food for themselves and often for their families. It is not the ideal food for their children, but having been a parent of four young kids at one time, I understand the difficulties that young families face. The State Government has brought in laws for a kilojoule labelling scheme which requires large fast food chains and supermarkets to display the kilojoule content of standard ready-to-eat food and non-alcoholic drinks on menus, along with the advice: The average daily adult energy intake is 8700 kilojoules. According to Diabetes Victoria, one person in four will develop diabetes, and that is often linked to the way we live today. The lifestyle factors that can increase the risk of developing type two diabetes include not being active enough and whether you are overweight. Kilojoule labelling is a highly cost-effective health and consumer information initiative, and it also creates awareness for consumers and creates an opportunity for them to think about their health and well-being. Numerous Australian and overseas studies link kilojoule labelling to a reduction in kilojoules purchased or consumed. Evidence suggests kilojoule labelling also encourages chain food businesses to offer healthier alternatives to energy-dense meals. We know that eight out of 10 Australian consumers favour fastfood outlets displaying calorie counts on menus. Obesity is a growing issue, with nearly half the population self-reporting being overweight or obese. Obesity and being overweight pose a major risk for chronic disease, including type two dia-
Christine does the math before placing an order. 161121 betes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke and some forms of cancer. The key causes are increased consumption of energy-dense foods that are high in saturated fats and sugars, and reduced physical activity. According to VicHealth, being obese and overweight has been shown to have a significant
effect on a person’s mental and social health and can also make them subject to discrimination and negative attitudes. We know of course that a lot of children are bullied at school because they are overweight, and obesity can cause lots of other issues. The psychological damage that is done to kids
through bullying at school can have a major impact, so it is not just the obesity in itself but lots of other issues that can flow from that. I have met with many constituents who fully support these laws which provide important education and awareness to the broader community.

The helpful fruit of their research
Professor Michael Berk is committed to finding a suitable treatment for schizophrenia.
Deakin University wants people from Pakington St to help with a study that could be potentially vital to the advancement of mental health. Tropical fruit mangosteen pericarp could be an effective treatment for schizophrenia, according to research. Director of the Centre for Innovation in Mental and Physical Health and Clinical Treatment (IMPACT) Professor Michael Berk says Deakin University’s School of Medicine has partnered with Barwon Health to conduct a trial on the effectiveness of the fruit in reducing symptoms of schizophrenia. “We are trying to see whether this plant-based extract would help people with schizophrenia if you take it together with standard medication,“ he says. The study stems from research which has found evidence to suggest the rind of the fruit from the mangosteen tree contains bioactive compounds that may be beneficial in reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, which may in turn reduce the symptoms of schizophrenia. “We wanted to do a definitive study to prove this.” Director of the Queensland Centre for Mental Health John McGrath is also recruiting in Queensland for the study. The researchers hope to recruit people from the community who have diagnoses of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder to take part in the trial. “We would like 150 people to participate and ideally, an even balance of females and males, al-
though schizophrenia is more common in males than females.” Professor Berk says the mangosteen pericarp fruit is “quite tasty – it tastes like a cross between a lychee and a banana.” The notion that the fruit rind could be an effective treatment for schizophrenia comes as no surprise to the professor. “When you think about it, historically, most of the medicines we have are plant derived. “Many anti-cancer drugs also come from plant-based sources and aspirin comes from willow bark. There is a very rich tradition of plant-based materials having positive effects on health.” Professor Berk says the treatment will involve participants taking either a fruit extract capsule or a placebo in addition to their existing treatment. “There will be no disruption to their existing treatment; hopefully there will be an additional benefit.” “We really just want to get across a message of hope. “There are people committed to developing new treatments and there is hope that people with these conditions could be assisted by a program that aims to develop these treatments.” VitalXan is supplying the extract. Those who are 18 years or older and who would like to take part in the trial can contact Bianca Kavanagh for more information by phoning 4215 3301 or emailing bkavanagh@barwonhealth.org.au

Together creating a suicide safer community
12328374-ACM43-16
Lifeline Geelong is very proud to be part of the Australia-wide network which receives over a million calls per year from people in crisis. Our contribution is thanks to the wonderful volunteers we have at our centre who commit their time to be there for their community. Lifeline Geelong is also committed to increasing the capacity of the community to respond to those who need support. One of the ways we do this is through the provision of training such as suicide intervention, mental health first aid and domestic and family violence response. A significant project for us over the coming year is to provide a suicide alertness program called safeTALK. With an estimated five per cent of the population having thoughts of suicide in any two weeks, people trained to be suicide-alert can greatly reduce the risk of someone acting on those thoughts. SafeTALK is a half-day program which helps participants recognise when someone is at risk of suicide, engage with the person and connect them with resources that can help them choose to live. Anyone aged 15 or older, who wants to make a difference, can learn the safeTALK steps. Recent funding from Give Where You Live has enabled Lifeline Geelong to offer this fullyfunded three-hour workshop for not-for-profit organisations in the Barwon Region. Lifeline Geelong recognises that people who work or volunteer for these organisations are often interacting with people who are vulnerable

Geelong Cemeteries Trust Darryl Thomas, Lynden Smith, Frank de Groot and Trevor Colbert with the award.
Geelong Cemeteries Trust’s Moonah Memorial Walk at Queenscliff Cemetery.
Cemetery rests on its green laurels Stan Krpan congratulated Geelong Cemeteries Trust and other Premier’s Award winners. “Each year we continue to discover the passion Victorians have for protecting their environment and thinking creatively about new sustainable practices,“ Mr Krpan said. “Our state has an excellent track record of delivering innovative projects that benefit our environment and the community through efficient waste management, resource recovery, and new technologies for clean energy.” “Congratulations to all of this year’s winners. Your contributions will have positive long-term effects on our society and our way of life.“ Geelong Cemeteries Trust also acknowledged Environmental Protection category co-finalists Armstrong Creek Development Corporation and
GbLA Landscape Architects for a joint project at southern Geelong’s Warralily estate, and Moonee Valley City Council for its Afton Street wetland and stormwater harvesting scheme. The trust said its Moonah Memorial Walk drew on “extensive community consultation, botanical assessment and careful, thoughtful environmental planning”. “The walk was a great challenge and we are proud to have been a part of this extensive project saving the endangered woodland and restoring it back to its former beauty,” trust chairman Lynden Smith said. “We are so happy that we can offer the walk as a treasured place for the community to visit for years to come.” “This project has gained interest within the
cemetery industry, both nationally and internationally, and is a first for working with existing original vegetation and creating a true natural burial setting.” “My fellow trust members and I would like to publicly thank our wonderful staff for their creativity and hard work in completing the project and also thank the Borough of Queenscliffe council and the communities of Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale for their support and enthusiasm”. The trust encourages the community to visit the memorial walk. Further information on the purchase of limited burial and cremation memorials is available by phoning the trust’s administration office on 5249 3939 for an appointment with a staff member.

Geelong Cemeteries Trust has been successful in winning the Environmental Protection category at this year’s Premier’s Sustainability Awards. The trust was recognised for retaining the existing protected Coastal Moonah Woodland and developing a natural reserve offering unique burial and cremation memorials at Queenscliff Cemetery. The site, Moonah Memorial Walk, is a habitat for endangered woodland and species at the cemetery. Augmented with the addition of over 1500 additional trees, shrubs and understory plants, the walk is also home to a variety of fauna and other flora in a beautiful natural setting for burial and cremation memorials. Family baker founder Victor Routley.
True taste of Geelong in the baking A local family has made Routley’s Bakery synonymous with the Geelong region for more than 60 years. With a well-deserved reputation among other local families for beautifully baked goods, Vic and Verna Routley first started baking in 1947. The couple grew up in Geelong but the original Routley’s store was in Nelson Place, Williamstown. After World War II, the couple moved to Williamstown where Vic worked as a baker. He and Verna decided to buy the shop where he had been working and began operating it together. The couple’s working days began at midnight when they stoked up their big brick-lined Scotch
oven, fired with wood or briquettes. They would put the pies in first when the oven was hottest, followed by cakes and then the delicate sponges. In 1971 Vic and Verna handed on the baton to their son Lawrie and wife Anne. The couple expanded the business to its present state with the help of their five children: Simon, Penny, Michael, Kate and Sam. The Routley family now also includes 10 great-grandchildren, with the eldest, Michael, also now working for the business. Routleys has a firm reputation as one of Geelong’s best bakeries but stands apart from the field for the quality of its pies in particular.
The big variety covers ingredients ranging from prime beef, veal and chicken through to tuna and vegetarian options. Wholemeal options are available, along with poplar Cornish pasties, sausage rolls, bread, sandwiches and much more. Routley’s operates nine outlets, including shops at Lara, Torquay, Colac and around Geelong. A catering service is also available, offering an ideal option for corporate events, family gatherings and club functions. Routley’s flagship North Geelong shop is open 6.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday, 7am to 4pm Saturdays and 9am to 4pm Sundays at 322
Melbourne Road. The North Geelong bakery offers daily specials, such as $5 packs of pies and cakes, $2 loaves of bread and $2 bags of rolls. Customers are invited to speak with staff about Routley’s delicious range of special-occasions cakes. The bakers can even make exotic chocolate croquembouches. More information about the company and its products is available at routleysbakery.com.au. Routley’s also invites customers to like its Facebook page to keep abreast of the latest specials.

Affordable servicing still satisfies Affordable Tyres is more than its name suggests. “We do just about everything,” said store manager Steve Green. The Geelong-owned store offers servicing, mechanical repairs and, of course, affordable tyres, Steve said. With 30 years in the business, the Lara local has the expert knowledge to fulfil each customer’s tyre needs. “We deliver all the information required to make an informed choice on the best suited tyres for your vehicle,” he said. Affordable Tyre’s VACC accreditation means customers can service their new car without voiding the warranty. “You don’t have to take it back to the dealer,” Steve said. Steve and his staff are enjoying their new modern workshop in Fyans Street, South Geelong, after moving there 14 weeks ago. “It’s all neat, clean and tidy, and it’s all modern gear and technology,” Steve said. With tyre fitters, mechanical staff and an electronics specialist onsite, Affordable Tyres can handle anything from a routine service to air conditioning and suspension kits, Steve said. “We have a wide variety of lift kits available and all the accessories and tyres to go with them. Come in and talk to us about your 4x4 requirements.” The store’s mechanics can check brakes, complete wheel alignments and much more. They can also take care of trucks, tractors or forklifts with industrial tyre fittings. Affordable tyre has a courtesy car available by appointment and is a licensed roadworthy tester. To book a car in call 5221 6599. Affordable Tyres sponsors the St Albans Football Club.

Equity option makes housing easy Looking to downsize? An innovative finance solution could save you up to $100,000, says Pelican Shores manager Sue Swingler. The main reason homes are more affordable in lifestyle villages, such as Pelican Shores, is that ownership of the land and home are separate, Sue says. “Although you will own your home, you rent rather than buy the land. Also, there is no stamp duty, expensive legal fees or ongoing council rates to pay and some pensioners are eligible for government funded rent assistance.” “If you are still concerned about having sufficient funds to enjoy a comfortable retirement and to tick off some of the things on your ‘bucket list,’ you can take advantage of Pelican Shores’ unique shared equity facility.” Rather than paying the full price on settlement, you need only pay 65 per cent - 99.99 per cent of the purchase price in return for the same percentage ownership, she explains.
“Using shared equity enables you to secure your home, and the lifestyle you have been dreaming about, without having to break the bank.” “It also frees up capital that would otherwise be tied up in your home, allowing you to spend it or invest it as you choose.” Although ownership of the home is shared between you and Pelican Shores, naturally you have exclusive use of the home and the right to sell your home when you wish. Pelican Shores residents Norma and John bought their home using shared equity. “Pelican Shores Estate not only allowed us to free up extra cash but it is just such a beautiful place to live," Norma said. “Leaving for holidays is a breeze because there is nothing to worry about knowing your home is safe. “We have stunning views and can walk our dogs in some of Victoria’s best surrounding countryside. The staff are friendly and helpful, just a great place to call home.”

Real Flame Geelong and its owners, Stuart Glover and Eddie Dorris, offer a one-stop shop for local heating and oven requirements.
Flaming passion to heat the home With more than 25 years of experience between them, Real Flame Geelong’s Stuart Glover and Eddie Dorris are industry leaders when it comes to heating and cookers. They pride themselves on being able to stand out from the competition by providing exceptional customer service, quality products and a full installation service. When clients come to them with an idea of what they want to achieve in their home, whether it’s a fireplace, a cooker or hydronic heating, Stuart and Eddie get involved in the full
design process. Their dedication to the highest level of customer service makes Real Flame Geelong a complete one-stop shop for their clients. Stuart and Eddie are hands-on during the whole process, from the initial showroom inquiry to signing off the installation with the client. They also work closely with builders on fireplace and hydronic design and installation. “Our builders really appreciate the prompt technical and installation support we provide them,” Stuart said.
Since taking over the business earlier this year, Stuart and Eddie have doubled the size of their showroom to extend the range from gas fireplaces to include AGA, Rayburn and Stanley cookers, hydronic heating and their newest product, Aranbe Heat Wood Heaters. “We’re very excited to be able to bring Aranbe heaters to Real Flame Geelong. It’s exactly what our clients have been asking for,” Eddie said. Aranbe Heat has set a new benchmark with its range of wood heaters that merge high per-
formance with intelligent engineering and stylish design. Aranbe heaters are designed and manufactured in Melbourne to meet the needs of Australian-built homes in maximising heat efficiency while lowering emission levels. Real Flame’s showroom is at shop 2a Gordon Avenue, Geelong West. Phone 5229 0844. More information about Real Flame, including a product catalogue, is available online at realflamegeelong.com.au.

Car services, brake checks, fixing clutches – getting these jobs done quickly, efficiently and easily requires a solid handful of essentials. One is location, or being able to get to and from the mechanic shop readily. Another is quick access by the mechanic shop to spare parts, which can readily trim a day off the wait for a car’s return. A third consideration is quality work, the fourth is friendly extra care and the fifth is courtesy pick-up and drop-off. Geelong Brake and Clutch’s Denis and Lesley Williams have made meeting each of these points articles of faith at their South Geelong business. Their clients don’t have to fight city traffic to get to them. Expert advice and product knowledge for all makes and models of vehicles – including offroad and heavy duty vehicles – makes GBC an easy choice. Superior customer service and care is the icing on the cake. GBC offers: brake rotors and pads plus rotor machining; drum brake kits and machining; clutch replacement kits and flywheel machining; and an extensive range of suspension parts; driveshaft replacement kits; and a brake and clutch hose fabrication service, all covering most vehicle makes and models including commercial vehicles and 4WDs. “We have a large range of brake and clutch parts usually on hand, making us quicker, easier to access and we take extra care of our customers,” Lesley says. “We go the extra mile to make people realise that they are important to us. And safety is the key issue too, as we all use the road”. “We‘re also happy to do no-obligation quotes.” Geelong Brake and Clutch is at 8 Dowsett St, phone 5222 7411.

Services include log book servicing, fleet servicing, maintenance and management, mechanical repairs, 4WD and light commercial vehicle servicing and repairs, pre-purchase car inspections, roadworthy certificates, steering and suspension repairs and brake and clutch repairs. “To ensure BJT Automotive’s mechanical services in Geelong are cutting edge and up to date we are constantly refreshing and improving our mechanics’ skills and knowledge,” Brett adds. “If you are about to buy or sell a car, talk to us first. 05 TOYOTA COROLLA ASCENT HATCH Honda Civic sedan has a bolder and sleeker look that should appeal to hatch buyers.
Bold new Honda Civic looks good By Alistair Kennedy HONDA has unveiled its tenth generation Civic hatchback at the recent Paris Motor Show. It won’t arrive in Australia until next year but it does give us a good segue into our recent test of the gen-10 Civic four-door sedan that went on sale here a few months back. Civic has been a staple of the Honda range since it made its debut in 1973 Civic. Not only is it the Japanese carmaker’s all-time biggest seller, it also sits fifth on the list of the world’s all-time biggest selling passenger cars. Given this pedigree it has been sad to see Civic sales slump so dramatically over the past couple of years. Circumstances beyond Honda’s control contributed significantly to this decline including the GFC, Thai floods and Japanese tsunami. Nor has it been helped by competing against three of Australia’s biggest sellers, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3 and Hyundai i30. While the arrival of the new Civic sedan has certainly re-kindled interest hatches are far more popular in the small car segment and Honda dealers will be counting the days until the arrival of the new fivedoor model sometime during the first half of 2017. Unlike the previous model all Gen 10 Civics, both sedan and hatch, now come from a new Honda factory in Thailand, with the same design and specifications. Like many in its class the Civic sedan has a coupe-like profile, clearly aimed at attracting younger and less conservative buyers than before. Having said that there’s nothing there that’s likely to really turn heads. The price-leading Civic VTi gets 16-inch steel wheels. All others step up to alloys, 16-inch in the VTi-S, 17s in the others. The Civic RS comes with an integrated body kit, including a gloss black grille, rear spoiler, sunroof and sportier wheels. The interior has been redesigned and has a more elegant look and feel than before with a level of comfort that’s rare in cars of this size. Civic sedan is also more spacious due to a combination of clever design work and an extra 45 mm in the external width to the car. It’s particularly noticeable in the rear seats which could easily pass for a car in the next size up. The boot is large (around 518 litres) with a flat floor and low loading height. All models have space-saver spare wheels. The dashboard is logically designed with a large touchscreen and a digital instrument panel. There are plenty of clever storage ideas. Five versions of the Civic hatch are on offer. The VT-i and VTi-S, are powered by the previous 1.8-litre naturally-aspirated 104 kW / 174 Nm petrol engine. The VTi-L, RS and VTi-LX get an

all-new 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol unit with 127 kW and 220 Nm. For the first time in a Civic there is no manual gearbox with all models getting a CVT in place of the old five-speed conventional automatic. The turbo engines 1.5-litre variants also gets paddle shifters. The dashboard display is a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen in all models. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto provide smartphone interface. However, they connect via USB cable rather than being wireless. Voice commands operate through either Siri Eyes Free or Google Voice. Bluetooth phone and audio streaming are also standard. The premium VTi-LX gets dedicated satellite navigation, all other models rely on smartphone links. DAB+ radio is standard on VTi-L, RS and VTi-LX. In addition to the standard list of safety equipment (airbags, enhanced brakes and stability/ traction control) all Civic variants get a reversing camera, emergency stop signal, tyre pressure warning and hill start assist. All models above the entry-level VTi also get front and rear parking sensors as well as LaneWatch which uses a camera mounted at the rear of the left-hand mirror to provide an 80-degree view of the left lane whenever the left indicator is activated. The top spec Civic VTi-LX takes safety to a higher level with the Honda Sensing package that includes Collision Mitigation Braking System; Road Departure Mitigation System; Forward Collision Warning; Lane Departure Warning; Lane Keeping Assist System; and Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow. The new turbo-petrol engine should be a major selling point. It’s quiet and refined with plenty of torque and low fuel consumption.

SPORT McGlinchey out for count
Snapping up some snapper
LOCAL CRICKET
ON THE BITE

Geelong Cricket Club moves into the two-day section of the Premier Cricket fixture tomorrow rattled by the news that star fast bowler Dom McGlinchey will miss the remainder of the season with a serious injury. Unfortunately, McGlinchey has suffered a reoccurrence of the foot problem that saw him miss the second half of last season. While the loss will hopefully be balanced out by the imminent return of Jake Reed from a side strain, it is still a bitter blow and will test the already stretched depth of the club’s bowling stocks. Last week’s one day game against Kingston Hawthorn was washed out, meaning after five rounds, the Cats have just one win to their name from three completed games. Tomorrow they travel to Toorak Park to play Prahran, who have had a similar start to their season with just one win, meaning this is a very important game for both sides if they want to stay in touch with the top eight. While the loss of McGlinchey is huge, the door opens for someone else to step in and make their mark. With the club crying out for new talent, the door is ajar for the next star bowler to make their name.
Dedicated anglers overcame blustery conditions again over the past week to bank some impressive snapper. Anglers casting whole pilchards on paternoster rigs caught snapper to 6kg at St Helens, with pinkies and flathead taken as by-catch. Soft plastic anglers fishing Corio Bay spoil grounds boated pinkies to 45cm along with the odd pike and flathead. Clifton Springs attracted plenty of snapper anglers, with those able to head out boating fish to 7kg and numerous gummy sharks to 6kg. St Leonards remained the whiting capital of the Bellarine Peninsula, with the Bourke St area producing fish over 40cm. Anglers targeting squid battled poor water clarity but managed reasonable captures while drifting in close. The channel entrance to Swan Bay was worthwhile on Monday afternoon by casting soft plastics at the start of the run-in tide for Australian salmon of 2.5kg, then later pinkies, snapper, whiting and smaller salmon around 1kg were caught. Queenscliff Harbour produced silver trevally and pinkies, particularly aound the entrance. Bait anglers had success with pilchard fillets and pippies, while soft plastic anglers caught fish with 1/4oz jig heads and Gulp turtleback worms. Surf anglers caught salmon to 2kg on the run-in tides at 13th and Bancoora beaches and from the rock platforms further toward Lorne. The crater lakes continued giving up large brown trout over 4kg for anglers slowtrolling hard-body lures along the margins. The odd Chinook salmon was also taken but with lightly weighted baits suspended just above the bottom. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir remained frustration but still produced redfin to 40cm and rainbow trout of 1kg on lures. Next week should provide opportunities to fish St Leonards for whiting and squid, while the Swan Bay channel’s salmon should also be on the chew. Freshwater anglers should persist with Wurdee Boluc’s big redfin. This Friday Night, 28th of October at 6.30pm is Trellys Tackle Spectacular will be at Geelong Showgrounds Hall of Agriculture from 6.30pm tonight, with guest speakers, discounted gear and a fish simulator.
In the Geelong Cricket Association, round three will revert to a one day round after last Saturday was washed out. While the match of the round is clearly between two undefeated sides in Newtown & Chilwell and St Josephs, there are a number of other matches that will be critical to the final standings at the end of the season. With the GCA looking to reduce the number of teams in division one from 12 to 10 next season, two clubs will be relegated, meaning based on the two year rolling average, a number of clubs are already in the firing line. Newtown & Chilwell are one of those sides after a number of poor seasons, but their solid start to the year will give them hope that they can stay in the top flight. Bell Post Hill narrowly avoided relegation themselves over the winter, they will need to take some big scalps this year if they want to stay up, and there would be no bigger scalp than reigning premier Grovedale who they play tomorrow. The Tigers were thrashed in round one before taking the points against North Geelong, but still haven’t hit their straps and could still be vulnerable early. The other game with ramifications for the relegation battle will be the one between Leopold and St Peters. While newly relegated St Peters can be forgiven for taking a little time to find their feet back in division one, Leopold have disappointed for a number of years now, and really need to
make a stand if they want to keep their proud record in the top division intact. The prospect of two sides going down at the end of this season certainly adds an extra layer of intrigue into what is already a hard season to gauge. As a result of these changes, division two clubs know that even a good showing this season will count for little as no one will be going up this year. Having said that, it will be in all clubs interest to put as many points in the bank as possible if they want to go up in 18 months time. The likes of Highton and Marshall have been the clubs that have shown consistent depth and performance in recent seasons, not only their First XI but also through their grades. Marshall in particular have picked up a few lower grade premierships, and have made no secret of their desire to go up and have a crack against the big boys in division one. With a youthful squad, and improving facilities, the Bears will see tomorrows game against Geelong West as a chance to continue to put the building blocks in place. While most eyes will be on the race for the premiership cups in all grades and divisions this season, an interesting subplot of promotion and relegation will continue to bubble away below the surface.

Injury-plagued forward Mitch Clark has left Geelong Football Club after playing nine games in two seasons. The former star with Melbourne and Brisbane was unable to reach similar heights with the Cats despite kicking three goals on debut for Geelong in round one 2015. Clark battled injuries and a public battle with depression during his time with the Cats. He also caused controversy with distasteful on-field remarks about an opponent’s girlfriend, who was also the sister of Geelong midfielder Mitch Duncan.
The Cats delisted 29-year-old Clark this week. “Unfortunately, Mitch suffered a number of injuries during his two years at Geelong and as a result, wasn’t able to perform to his true capability,” said Cats football general manager Steve Hocking. “We thank Mitch for his time at the club and wish him and his family all the best for their future.” Geelong also this week delisted Michael Luxford after three years at the club. Luxford was regarded as an elite junior basketballer before joined the Cats as a rookie
in late 2013. He debuted at AFL level in round 10 and played two games in 2015 before the Cats upgraded him to the senior list at the end of the year. He failed to play a senior game in 2016 but managed 46 VFL matches in the blue and white hoops. “Michael is an impressive sporting talent who worked diligently on his game to transition from basketball to football. He was popular amongst his teammates and we wish him all the best in his future sporting endeavours,” Hocking said.
