■ Ex-cop is set to focus on family violence…

Camera copped Damien Howard has swapped his police badge for the camera lens as he seeks to make a TAC-style “shock” commercial against family violence. He covered the Casey beat for seven years as a cop and said more needs to be done to stop the scourge. “There are a lot of organisations doing great work for victims but I feel it’s not enough - especially considering the number of people affected. “It’s a wonder the campaign’s not seen everywhere - on bus shelters and in school curriculums.” Shockingly, a woman is killed every week in Australia at the hands of her partner or former partner. Mr Howard has seen hundreds of households wrecked by abusive husbands and dads in Casey. He said no other issue took up so much police time. “It’s always the stuff to do with kids that gets to me,” Mr Howard said. “It’s also when you see a dog neglected. It’s more the innocent victims that shakes me up.” He said one in four children experience family violence and then copy their parents’ tortured dynamics. They copy those “little things” that go under the radar and as a result they are three times more likely to be perpetrators or victims of family violence as adults. In his advertisement Mr Howard intends to show not only the impact on the partner but also the damage to her children. “It will show there are many victims of domestic violence and how it destroys lives. “It’s designed to educate and shock.” Mr Howard has seen brutal relationships maintained without complaint through 20 years of abuse. It doesn’t need to be physically violent to inflict deep wounds on the victims, he said. Psychological abuse is the most damaging but also, sadly, the most tolerated. Even after her partner has threatened to kill her, sometimes the victim doesn’t think he is doing anything wrong, he said. “She says he’s not a bad guy because he doesn’t hit her. “There’s even a tolerance for it. It becomes the

She has no job, no confidence but is just marooned at home isolated and with “nothing to do”. “It’s shocking. They look like they’re completely broken and don’t know a way out. “We nearly have to force their hand for them to walk out.” Mr Howard had given himself a 10-year limit on his time on the police force. He had enjoyed the job, its variety and working in the community. It was busy and it got busier as Casey’s population exponentially grew. He then walked out to pursue his long-held

when he watched Steven Spielberg’s works such as ET as a child. “I have vivid memories of these films. They’re timeless. “I watch them with my own kids and I can see myself watching them with my grandkids.” His long-held goal was to work in the US as a director. When he won a scholarship to LA, it further whetted his appetite. It opened his eyes to the creative deluge of film and TV produced in Hollywood where film students inspired him with their proactivity, passion and hard work.

“In any job, I thought I’d retire at 60. But I don’t think I’ll retire as a film-maker.

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS “It’s not about the money. It’s about when you go to a movie and you feel moved - that feels amazing.” Mr Howard’s works don’t shy from difficult subjects. He has produced works on depression and on cage-fighting’s positive influence on disaffected youth. For his family violence campaign, he is seeking $7000 through a crowd-funding site launched on 29 October. The fund-raising ends on 27 November. Every $1 in $10 raised will go to the White Ribbon Foundation. 12325111-40-16

Waiting for poll results The large number of late voters who returned their ballot papers close to the deadline pushed the Casey election count into the weekend. As preliminary results began to roll in for the 2016 Victorian local government election at the end of last week, most of the wards in Casey had not been able to show any results by Friday. The VEC released preliminary results for Balla Balla Ward which is the only ward on Casey that uses preferential rather than proportional voting. Results released on the VEC website on Thursday 27 October places sitting councillor Geoff Ablett with 55.61 per cent of first preference votes with 37.75 per cent of the votes left to count for Balla Balla Ward. Cr Ablett said he is happy with the results so far but isn’t officially claiming victory just yet. “It’s terrific news and I’m very pleased with re-

sults so far,” he said. The official results of the election won’t be known until between Friday 28 October and Monday 31 October but initial results are expected to be known by 5pm Saturday 29 October. About 250 complaints have been received by the Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate from across the state during the 2016 election. These complaints include six submissions from the Casey area though the Inspectorate would not comment on the details of the complaints at this stage of its examinations. “We’ve identified two complaints from River Gum and none from Four Oaks,” a statement from the Inspectorate said. “Many additional issues arise post-election or are referred by the Victorian Electoral Commission and will continue to be received and processed in the coming months.” Meanwhile in nearby Mayfield Ward, an inves-

tigation is underway following claims that Cranbourne residents had voting ballots stolen from their mailboxes. A spokesperson for the Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate confirmed that officers were investigating the claims. “The Inspectorate has investigated a report that residents in an area of Cranbourne may have had postal ballot papers for the 2016 Casey City Council elections removed from their letter boxes,” a statement said. “Inspectorate staff completed a door knock of the area and a small number of properties confirmed they did not receive ballot papers. “This matter is the subject of an ongoing investigation.” It is unclear at this stage if the complaints that have originated from the River Gum Ward will develop into an investigation.

Hit-run woman critical A hit-run in Dandenong left a 37-year-old woman in a critical condition. Detectives appealed for public help following the incident, which occurred at Alsace Street and Alexander Avenue about 10pm on Tuesday 25 October. Police said a white Toyota HiAce van and a Toyota Camry were parked near the intersection at the same time the victim was involved in a disagreement with two men out on the street. The men returned to the van and drove off but hit the woman in the process, police allege, and did not stop. An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said the woman had serious head, chest and pelvic injuries. Paramedics treated the woman and initially took her to Dandenong Hospital. She taken to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition.

VCAT refuses bid to block townhouses on heritage site Casey council’s objections to a multi-townhouse development in front of a heritage house in Narre Warren has been overruled by the state’s planning tribunal. Simon House, otherwise known as Yarrimbah, was built about 1970 for Berwick’s first mayor Barry Simon and designed by renowned Australian architect Robin Boyd. According to a state heritage report, the Lshaped house at 368 Narre Warren North Road has Japanese character with elements of the “peristyle and atrium” of Rome and Greece. Uniquely, its large internal open-plan spaces intersect at different levels. At the time, Boyd described the modern cottage set among a spacious backdrop of rolling farmland as reminiscent of a Greek village. The courthouse style building has since been nearly engulfed by suburbia including 10 townhouses built by the developer on the eastern and southern sides of the 8178-square metre site in 2013. In the latest case, Morgan Development Groups sought a permit from the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) to build six further townhouses on the site’s tree reserve frontage between the road and the house. Casey council had failed to grant a permit within the required time period. It argued at VCAT in August that it would have rejected the application due to adverse impact on the house’s high local heritage significance. It also opposed the developer’s plan to remove most of the vegetation, some of which was originally designed and planted by Mr Simon. A heritage overlay applies to the site, including the 3500-square metre tree reserve. The council argued the plan was an overdevelopment of the site, and that the vegetation’s retention was a key factor for the earlier townhouses’ approval. VCAT Senior Member Laurie Hewat, in his 19 October finding, had sympathy for the latter argument but noted the landscaping had already been “significantly debased” and was not in keeping with Mr Simon’s design. Much of the vegetation earmarked for removal was of low retention value, Mr Hewat stated.

A man has been assaulted during a car-jacking in Endeavour Hills on 18 October that left him minor injuries and without his car. The 23-year-old man had just parked his car on Scotsburn Way in Endeavour Hills when he noticed a silver Audi 4WD had parked directly behind him. Three car-jackers, two armed with baseball bats, approached the victim and forced him out of his car and drove off with both vehicles. Police are now on the lookout for the silver Audi and the stolen 1998 model blue VT Commodore. Any witnesses or anyone who may information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 000 333 or make a report directly to Detective Senior Constable Johnson at the Dandenong Major Crimes Unit.

Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society Ten finalists put on their most modern dress creations, wriggled, shook and swirled to gain popularity votes from crowded lounges. Petite Julie Johnson was voted to the top in the dress section. Her dress had a yellow “poor-boy” top, lime and yellow striped miniskirt, golf belt and mesh stockings. Eighteen-year-old blonde Julie lives in McLeod Street, Carrum, attended Bonbeach High School and is now a secretary for Balm Paints Fitzroy. She would like to do part-time modelling, loves go-go dancing and in her spare time goes swimming and riding.

1998 if recommendations before tonight’s City of Greater Dandenong Council meeting are adopted. Council will vote on a recommendation that the Stock Agents Association, Victorian Farmers Federation and other interested people in the livestock industry be given two years to prepare for the closure of the saleyards, which have been operating for 130 years. Greater Dandenong facility management officer Mr David Graffen says in this report that the closure of the sale yards will mean “overwhelming benefits” for the City of Greater Dandenong. Closure of the saleyards will result in a loss to council in the operating profit generated annually by the saleyards. “However it will enable council to avoid considerable cost associated with capital improvements which would be required if it continued to operate,” he wrote. He said it is believed new technology will reduce the need for the saleyards.

5 years ago 31 October 2011 Street honours nun’s legacy A catholic nun who worked to improve opportunities for refugee women in Dandenong will be memorialised in the city with a street name. Sister Ann Halpin, who died in late 2009, was named Greater Dandenong Citizen of the Year earlier that year in recognition of her more than 30 years of contribution to the area. She worked tirelessly to improve opportunities for refugee and migrant women and founded the Wellsprings for Women drop-in centre in 1994. Greater Dandenong Council has now decided to name the new street immediately north of 139-157 Thomas Street after Sister Ann. The street, which runs east west between Thomas and Rudduck streets, will be called Halpin Way.

BACK JACK JOHNSON the back of the taper holder and pole. As a small altar boy that same long pole caused me much stress. I was nervous as I tried to manoeuvre it amongst those topheavy vases of long-stemmed gladioli to light or extinguish the tall altar candles or the candles in the brass candelabras. I was always scared of knocking something over, especially as I had seen it happen before when I was first serving on the altar with one of the big kids. He was forced to be an altar boy by his parents, who I think had

ideas of him becoming a priest. But I am sure he had no such ambitions. His biggest worry was that some of his state school mates would come by the church and see him dressed in his surplice and soutane and wearing altar slippers, all of which he referred to as ‘bloody sheila’s clothes”. He didn’t give a jot about being an altar boy and one day he knocked a vase with the pole and started a domino effect that almost cleared the whole altar. Another day while I was busy filling the cruets with water and wine he shocked the hell out of me when he grabbed the bottle of wine and started to guzzle it down. I also had trouble when the table that contained the cruets, jug and dish for the hand washing was placed in the right hand corned of the sanctuary behind the statue of St Bernadette. When Nipper and I were altar boys for Father Little, we were often sent from the sacristy across that path to the mystic and aweinspiring atmosphere of the presbytery living room, which was also his office, to get something from this classic Australian cedar architect’s desk that sat beside the velvet-draped bay window. The window looked out across the castiron posted, tessellated tile verandah into the bushy front garden and beyond into the gardens of Laurel Lodge next door. Most of the furniture in the presbytery had probably been given to or acquired by previous parish priests who had served during the church’s first half-century.

The late Jack Johnson was the author of When The Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city’s pipes and drains as a plumber, and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street. When the four of us kids walked down the gravel path from the stables and yard to the path beside St Mary’s Church, we walked on a thick carpet of fragrant rose petals in the early morning dew. Even though we were only young kids and not yet of an age to stop and smell the roses, it was memorable. Seventy-five years later when I experience the scent of a rose garden I am taken back to that beautiful old church and rose garden of our childhood. I recalled the smell of incense at benediction and burning candles just extinguished by the little witches’ hat-shaped brass cone on

Tools valued at more than a million dollars were stolen from utes, work sites and properties in Cardinia Shire, Casey and Greater Dandenong over 12 months. Darren Pollard, 49, from Berwick, knows half a dozen tradies who have been targeted by tool raiders in the past few weeks, and he himself has been a victim. All it took was 15 minutes for thieves to pinch thousands of dollars’ worth of tools from the back of his work truck. “I went to do a quote in Jayco Drive, Dandenong, about six weeks ago. I was inside the factory on a Monday morning from 7.20am for about 15 minutes. When I came out there were two blokes stealing tools from my work truck,” he said. “They got away with a demo saw and power tools. They cost me about $3500.” The thieves took off in a white ute, and that was the last the sole trader and father of six saw of his tools. “I have to source new tools to keep the job going,” he said, explaining his insurance did not cover the theft. Police in the outer south-east region are urging tradies to increase the security of their gear as a result of the $1 million spike in tool thefts between June 2015 and June 2016. Southern Metro Proactive Policing Unit Sergeant Brad Johnstone said tradies were being targeted by opportunistic criminals on the lookout for unsecured tools. “While this isn’t a new problem for us, we have seen a recent spike particularly in the areas of Berwick, Narre Warren and Endeavour Hills,” Sgt Johnstone said. “Most cases involve thieves who roam residential streets overnight searching for easy targets like an unsecured trailer. “Unfortunately, tools are easy to steal and can

be sold for cash, often to other tradies.” Sgt Johnstone said police would be speaking to tradespeople about the best ways to keep their tools nailed down. “The inconvenience for an individual when the tools vital to their trade are stolen is huge,” Sgt Johnstone said. “The reality is that a number of these crimes can be reduced by some simple preventative measures.” Mr Pollard said he personally knew six tradies who had had their tools stolen in the past few weeks, including a plumbing apprentice who had his van pinched. These tools are often traded in at pawn shops for cash. Police issued tips to prevent tool theft: Tips to prevent tool theft: · When leaving tools in your vehicle overnight, park it in a garage where possible. Avoid dark, unlit or isolated areas; Lock your vehicle when it is unattended, even at work sites. Wherever possible, keep tools out of sight so that thieves are not tempted; · Secure any tools left inside the vehicle with visible locks. Use hardened steel padlocks, shackle protectors and chains. Large, visible locks on toolboxes can be a deterrent; · If you drive a ute, consider investing in a sturdy, lockable ute toolbox and bolt it to the vehicle’s tray; · Alarm your tool box and vehicle; · Keep an inventory of all of your tools. Photograph and/or record model and serial numbers; · Engrave or mark your tools for easy identification - the letter V followed by your Victorian licence number is recommended; · Report any suspicious behaviour to police. If you see people loitering on site or around vehicles and believe they are stealing or up to no good, ring triple-zero or Crime Stoppers1800 333 000.

It was a case of so close yet so far for Gleneagles Secondary College runners who were gallantly attempting a world record on 14 October. With Guinness Book of Records stewards on hand, 628 students tried to break the record for the most runners in a beep test. The record required 593 students to complete level five of the test - a shuttle run that requires students to complete 20-metre sections in an ever-decreasing time limit. Agonisingly, 578 made the mark. Two students, James Harry and Kyle Contencin, excelled. James completed the test up to level 14.4 and Kyle reached level 14 - both feats of elite speed and endurance. Teacher Roxanne Bell said there was great disappointment but students resolved to break the world record next year. “Students really appreciated the event. The vibe down there on the day was more electrifying than many anticipated. “We’re striving to smash the record next year.”

In Brief Man shot by police

By Casey Neill Stress sent Kathryne Toner’s heart into cardiac arrest. Her partner’s CPR training saved her life. “I had a lot of stress, a lot of financial problems and family problems,” the Doveton 45-year-old said. “I thought I could sort everything out, I thought I could fix everything. “My heart was exhausted. “I had a stress-induced cardio myopathy.” Ms Toner’s “hero” Simon Wells said there was a Japanese word for the condition that translated as broken heart syndrome. “She basically worried herself into a cardiac arrest,” he said. Her eyes were open, her pupils were fixed and dilated and she was gasping for breath. He called an ambulance and turned to his CPR training. “The first compression I heard a huge crack, and I thought ‘oh my goodness’,” he said. Ms Toner said: “I’d rather have a crack in my chest than be dead.” Mr Wells continued the chest compressions and breaths for 10 to 15 minutes, until four ambulances, a fire engine and an intensive care paramedic arrived. “They watched me for a few minutes while they were setting their gear up and assessing the situation,” he said. “They tapped me on the shoulder and said ’you’re right mate’ and they took me off and took over. “It took them another 15 minutes to revive her, just to get a heartbeat. “It was very loud, the defibrillator. I could hear it working and she wasn’t responding to it. “They shocked her five or six times. “She was in that bad of a position that they had to intubate her and put her in an induced coma here.” They transported her to Monash Medical Centre, where she was placed in the intensive care unit (ICU). Mr Wells said doctors put Ms Toner into hypo-

She spent three weeks in hospital and is making a steady recovery from the late August-incident. “It’s made me have a really good look at life. It’s turned my life around, basically,” she said. “I’ve been a long-time sufferer of depression. “I always thought there was someone worse off than me. “My aim is to let people know that if you’re highly stressed and got a lot on your plate to seek help. “I’m getting the help I need.” Ms Toner couldn’t speak highly enough of Mr Wells’ actions, and was thankful he was home.

“Normally, he would have been at work, I would have been home alone,” she said. “If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be sitting here today. “He’s a hero in my eyes.” But Mr Wells shrugged off the label. “Anyone in the same situation would have done the same thing,” he said. He instead directed the praise to his CPR training and defibrillators. “I think it’s hugely important for people to get CPR training,” he said. “If there’s not a defibrillator in your office, there should be one. “They should be everywhere. “All CPR does is supply your brain and your organs with oxygen until you can be revived. “Kathryne went into a fatal heart arrhythmia. “Without a defibrillator she wouldn’t have survived. “CPR would never have revived her.” Call Lifeline on 13 11 14 for 24-hour support.

A man was shot by police in one of two firearms incidents involving police in less than 10 hours that rocked Greater Dandenong on Wednesday 26 October. A man in his 30s was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries after police allegedly shot him. Police intercepted a car on Grace Street about 4pm and a male passenger got out and ran, dashing through several back yards and onto Stud Road where he confronted officers with a firearm and was shot. And a 33-year-old Keysborough woman will answer attempted murder charges after allegedly shooting at police in Keysborough earlier in the day. The officers were executing a search warrant at an Ascot Place home just before 6.30am when she allegedly fired a number of shots at them. No one was injured and police arrested a man and woman at the scene. The woman will also answer charges of reckless conduct endangering life, assaulting police, using a firearm to resist arrest and other related offences. Police charged a 39-year-old man with trafficking and possessing drugs and ammunition.

Engineering services director Julie Reid said more than 30 trees had been illegally chopped down or vandalised across the municipality in the past month. “In every instance, an axe has been used to chop down the trees or vandalise them, and in some cases the trees have been left in quite a dangerous state,” she said. Ms Reid said two trees posed a safety risk to motorists, with branches and limbs left hanging across Cheltenham Road in Keysborough.

Lending a hand Doveton College students’ handiwork has made a profound difference for two landmine victims. The students, teamed with Dandenong South East Rotary Club, to fund-raise and then assemble two prosthetic hands in the college’s workshop on 18 October. Rotarian Don Cantwell said Rotary clubs in the area had now provided 40 hands in the Building Hands for Landmine Victims program, thanks to sponsorship from businesses and community groups. “There are estimated to be 384,000 people who have lost one or both hands to landmines, and these are mostly children,” he said. “There are 120 million landmines still set in the world, mostly in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, and they are being cleared at a rate of only 100,000 per year. “At this rate, it will take 1200 years to clear all the mines!

Starting 30th Oct

“If you lose your hands you lose your independence. “By fitting these hands, although not perfect, we restore some independence and hope.” The hands are supplied in kits of 10 priced at $4000, and it takes two people two hours to put them together. Each hand is sent to its recipient with the name of the people who assembled it and the sponsor. “We are now getting emails from some of the victims who have some of our hands fitted, telling us what a difference it will make to their lives,” Mr Cantwell said. Doveton College teacher David Aird said students had organised two free-dress days to raise funds, which was boosted by a donation from Rotary. The project was part of an extensive student leadership program, he said. Rotary members also volunteer in Doveton College classrooms, including a sewing program and the college’s breakfast club for 80 students.

Hulls' legal reform call By Cam Lucadou-Wells “Lock ‘em up and throw away the key” won’t quell the spate of Apex Gang-style young offenders, former state Attorney-General Rob Hulls has told a south-east Melbourne community legal centre’s audience. Mr Hulls told the Springvale Monash Legal Service AGM on 26 October that education was an “absolute key” to stopping the region’s recidivist car-jackers and home invaders. “Why don’t we think as a community - instead of sending a kid to a youth detention centre for two or three weeks - that we send them to youth detention until they complete year 11 or year 12?” With an audience including two Dandenongbased magistrates, Mr Hulls said a holistic approach was much cheaper in the long-run. Under such a regime, offenders’ underlying problems such as drug and alcohol abuse and skipping school would be treated. This improved the chances of stemming the cycle of re-offending when they were released. Just locking up offenders for longer and building more prisons didn’t make the community safer and was a “nonsense“, Mr Hulls said. He warned that governments were moving down a costly road of spending more on prison beds than hospitals or schools. Aside from some “bad buggers that just need to be locked up”, prisoners commonly grew up in family violence, had mental health or drug issues, or acquired brain injuries. Those issues weren’t being treated within prisons which were the 21st century’s “asylums”, Mr Hulls said. He urged community legal centres to spruik for the long-term savings of a “therapeutic” approach while arming themselves with State Ombudsman Deborah Glass’s 2015 report on the costliness of prisons. “I’d be grabbing that (report) and using it on a daily basis.” Mr Hulls served as state Attorney General in the Bracks and Brumby governments from 19992010. He said it was a fight to maintain legal aid and

Rob Hulls says holistic sentencing of young violent offenders would be more effective. 161170 Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS community legal centre funding at the Cabinet table due to a misperception that it was “money for lawyers”. Now the director at the RMIT Universitybased Centre for Innovative Justice, Mr Hulls said the centre teamed law and social work students with professionals to help Dame Phyllis Frost Centre prisoners. The students followed up with prisoners six months later to clear stressful real-world problems such as family law disputes, housing, and finances that could de-rail them into re-offending. Mr Hulls said the combined social work and legal degree offered by RMIT was “where the future lies” in legal practice. It gave students a practical feel for what the legal process looks like, he said. The centre has called for new models of justice - such as restorative conferencing between

victims and perpetrators - for sexual offences and culpable driving. Mr Hulls stated that just 1 per cent of sexual assault victims reported the crime, were followed up by police, went to trial and secured a conviction against the offender. “Are we saying an adversarial system is all we have to offer to victims of sexual assault?” In culpable driving offences, usually it involves a “mate killing a mate” smashing into a tree. Mr Hulls wondered if jail was the best outcome for the driver who had to live with killing his mate or the victim’s family, who was searching for answers. He noted the UK’s moves towards cyber courts and said Australian courts “designed by lawyers for lawyers” had to be more user-friendly. “We should be putting the user at the centre of designing a legal system.”

Council calls to cut mayor golf Casey council is considering dumping its sponsorship of a charity golf day which is named after its mayor. The council resolved to review its $4000 sponsorship of Narre Warren Rotary Club’s Mayoral Shield Golf Day after Casey officers recommended halving support for the 18 November event. Officers described the sponsorship benefits to Casey as “limited” and that the golf day’s $12,600 “surplus” in 2015 made its sponsorship redundant. “This (halved) funding recognises council’s historical arrangement... and ensures ongoing provision of the planned golf day event,” the report stated. At an 18 October council meeting, councillor Wayne Smith moved for retaining a one-off full sponsorship of next month’s golf day. He argued it was unwise to announce a review and pre-emptively halve the golf day’s funding. “I’d hate to think the club would pick up the paper or read the council agenda, and see we’re halving it.” The officers’ report said the event had limited community appeal. “The Rotary Golf Day meets few of the objectives of the (council’s) event sponsorship program,” the report stated. “Council’s opportunity to promote its services and key messages are limited at this event.” It attracted a “relatively low” 100 participants and not many visitors to Casey, the officers’ report stated. The golf day was smaller than other council-sponsored events such as the Berwick Show and the Tricodes Night at Cranbourne according to the report. Casey had sponsored the annual Rotary fund-raiser for several years. The 18-round golf day funds mainly local Rotary projects as well as some international initiatives.

What is an amelanotic melanoma? Most melanomas are pigmented lesions on the skin. However a small number have little or no pigmentation. These are known as amelanotic melanomas. They present as pink or red lesions on the skin. Their unusual lack of pigment can make it difficult for both patient and doctor to recognise them early leading to delays in diagnosis. The technique of dermoscopy, which is examining the skin under magnification and bright illumination, allows correct diagnosis to be made early. It may be useful to apply the EFG rule to any new lesion that appears on the skin ie report any lesion that is Elevated, Firm and Growing to a doctor for further examination.

Our doctors are fully trained and experienced in the technique of dermoscopy and dermal imaging. If skin cancer is diagnosed our doctors can offer treatment at the clinic in over 90% of cases using surgery under local anaesthetic or prescription anti-cancer creams. Our aim is to diagnose skin cancers early when they are least likely to cause a serious problem. Dr Bansal also offers treatment for cosmetic removal of moles, cysts and lipomas. Consultations are available immediately. NO REFERRAL FROM A GP IS NECESSARY Ph: (03) 9769 3358 to make an appointment

New approach to mental health is easing pressure SOUTH Eastern Private Hospital is helping to take pressure off the public system by opening a new $15 million, 60-bed centre for voluntary adult mental health patients. It will focus on adult mood disorders such as depression and anxiety, and will also include an older persons’ unit. “Australia-wide, mental health is appropriately getting more exposure which, in turn, is helping sufferers and their loved ones feel more comfortable to seek support. “In the south-east corridor there is a real lack of private mental health beds and we identified the need for a modern mental health facility to offer more choice and range of services,” South Eastern Private Hospital chief executive Andrew Blyth said. A new research facility headed by Professor David Barton will also form part of the centre with the first clinical trial to focus on treatment-resistant depression. South Eastern Private Hospital is part of the Healthe Care group.

Berwick Optical Centre stocks a wide range of frames and lenses.

Some of WOH's cast and crew, Rhiannon Williams, Christopher Raymond, Rajiv Mahapatra, Saurab Sharma, Ankush Jindal, Deo Narayan and Kusum Narayan on set.

Endeavour Hills couple Deo and Kusum Narayan have laid it on the line to make their first featurelength Bollywood movie, WOH. Inspired by Deo’s long-held movie-making dream, the pair self-funded the Hindi film’s $120,000 production and marketing budget. With little experience but with a long line of loyal friends and a compelling storyline, they managed a cast of 130 actors shooting in homes and locations in Hallam, Cranbourne, Endeavour Hills and Dandenong. WOH, a Hindi word for ‘that’, is about heartbroken girl Costina who returns from London after the breakdown of her marriage. She then gets involved with a troubled man accused of murdering his mother-in-law and described as “deeper than the ocean”. Deo said the couple tried to highlight the challenges for some migrants settling in Australia. “I personally feel that the most challenging issue people throughout the world are facing is integration.

“Bollywood’s recent trend towards very commercialised films with a limited number of subjects .... had failed to provide much education to the people.” During the film’s making, Melbourne actors of many backgrounds were integrated, resulting in a rewrite of the Hindi language script. Kusum describes the finished product as “beautiful”. “We put our heart and soul into it for the past two years. “It’s our little baby that we have grown and nurtured.” After two years, the couple’s Tri Avatar Productions will launch WOH’s poster, CD soundtrack and trailer with much festivity on 6 November at Nazareth College in Noble Park North. Kusum said the next challenge is to find cinemas to screen their 90-minute film. She said she was surprised by the uphill and so far unsuccessful battle required to win government film funding. “You just have to have faith. Just think positive and it comes”.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

A plumb job for horse trainers “We want to be the number one equine training provider in the world.” Lyle Plumb is on the path to making Nine Dragons in Bangholme just that. Chinese businesspeople bought the site in Riverend Road in December 2012 and established a complete equine training centre. It’s now in Lyle and his wife Janet’s hands. “Since we purchased the property we’ve added a 3500 square metre indoor equestrian centre, which has an international-sized riding arena and teaching areas for our international trainees,” Lyle said. Nine Dragons is a registered training organisation. “The overseas students that come here can participate in an actual horse racing stable and learn everything from the basic riding skills to taking horses to the track and competing on race day,” he said. “Our students are mainly from Asia, with our largest numbers coming from China, Korea, Turkey and Malaysia. “We work closely together with universities and high schools in China and Korea and we assist them in their delivery of equine education to their students before they come to Australia. “This is like a finishing school. “We’re showing them the hands-on how to do it. “While they’re here, we try and assess which direction they’re heading so we can help them with their studies in the future.” More than 350 students are booked to attend this financial year. “We’re receiving a lot of interest not only from Asia but from the Middle East - countries like Qatar and Kuwait have made inquiries about sending people here,“ Lyle said. “We’re on an upward curve and we’re creating local employment, which is important to us.

Lyle Plumb, Korean student Min, Angela Plumb, Korean students Lee and Jun, and Janet Plumb. “We work in with local businesses.” Nine Dragons is part of the River End Road Business Group, which also includes Craft and Co Farm, Cornish College and the under-construction Melbourne Cable Park. “We’re also looking at holding major events here in the near future,” Lyle said. “We’re working together with the Greater Dandenong Council to run a rodeo here on 7 January.”

Nine Dragons will work the Craft and Co on trail riding sessions during the warmer months. “Our trail riding will be unique because we don’t actually go on public roads because it stays within our property boundaries,” Lyle said. “We’ve created riding paths within our 150 acres and then we ride through the winery next door up to the restaurant.” Lyle was a leading apprentice jockey in Queensland.

Two heads are better than one to support members By Casey Neill Two young mums are joining forces to go into bat for Greater Dandenong business. New Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce executive officer Tiffany Murray will work with now-events and marketing officer Amanda Checken on building membership and helping businesses to succeed. Ms Checken had been handling both roles but thought membership needed its own focus. Having two people working two days also means there’s back-up and collaboration. “I see it really as membership services,” Ms Murray said of her new role. “It’s making sure the members that we have are looked after and getting the benefits of their membership, plus recruiting new members.” She said membership was not as high as it should be given the number of businesses in the area. So together they’re working on a strategic document to set out the chamber’s goals and plan of attack. “We need to grow with the times and stay relevant,” Ms Murray said. “Businesses evolve. We need to evolve as well.” A member survey is in the works, but they’ve already received feedback on existing events and services. Among their ideas is an associate membership to make joining the chamber more affordable for smaller businesses. They both want to work more closely with fellow Greater Dandenong business groups South East Business Networks (SEBN) and South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA). “It would make more sense for us to be more collaborative,” Ms Checken said. Women’s events are also on the cards following requests, as are small seminars, and training courses for businesses too small to host their own. “They’re just ideas that we’ve been mulling over,” Ms Murray said. “We can put it out there and try. “You don’t have to be a member to attend our events. “You can try before you buy.” Ms Checken said facilitating business networking was a big focus, and acknowledged par-

“I rode successfully overseas in the 1980s throughout Asia and Europe,” he said. “Then I became a horse trainer. “While I was horse training I first got involved in training Japanese kids who were coming to Australia to learn. “That’s where I got my educator’s certificate. “During the early 2000s I was involved in setting up international equestrian training schools in mainland China.” He moved to China with his family in 2008 and spent four and a half years there. “My daughter, Angela, she’s a registered horse trainer with Racing Victoria,” he said. “She completed an international business degree at a Chinese uni. “She’s fluent in Chinese. “It makes her an important part of the education team.” His son, Ryan, is a jockey with 400 wins under his belt. “They’ll take over the family business in the future,” Lyle said. “Our family has been involved in horse racing for over 80 years in different capacities.” There’ll be 80 to 100 horses at Nine Dragons at any one time. “Some are for teaching the students riding, some are equestrian horses that are here on agistment, others are racing horses,” Lyle said. He has five racing horses. “We’ve only just started, we’re going to build it up next year to 20,” he said. Janet found herself involved in the horse industry “from being married for 30 years” and loves it. “Our granddaughter’s learning to ride - it just becomes part of life,” she said. “Ryan’s partner Jane is one of our coaches here. “It definitely is a family business.”

School-leavers building bridges By Casey Neill

New Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce executive officer Tiffany Murray with events and marketing officer Amanda Checken. ticipants’ aims could vary from furthering their client base to sharing ideas with like-minded businesses. She said the chamber existed to help its members to strive for success. “Everyone has different ideas of what success is,” she said. “We’re here to facilitate the options for them to do that. “At the end of the day it’s up to the businesses to come along and to talk.” Ms Murray said there’d be a focus on finding informative speakers for events, so workers could take something back to the office and implement

it post-breakfast. The 11 nominees for the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards were announced at breakfasts throughout the year. From these businesses, SEBN manager Sandra George will select winners for six awards, and the Chisholm Institute will present a Youth Enterprise Award to one of four nominees. All will be revealed at a cocktail event at Greyhounds Entertainment in Springvale. It will run from 6.30pm to 9.30pm on Wednesday 30 November, and has changed from a sitdown dinner to facilitate more networking.

A $10,000 boost will help The Bridge to build employment pathways for people with disabilities. The Our Neighbourhood Community Grant from Australia Post will buy devices and apps and employ staff for the disability service provider’s Next Step program. The Bridge CEO Phillip Toovey said Next Step was a transition to work program for school-leavers who needed to develop work skills. “Most of the people involved in Next Step have an intellectual disability of some sort,” he said. “Sometimes their literacy skills aren’t as strong. “We need to look at alternative communication modes.” The Look at Me app will help users to learn to read moods, remember faces, and express themselves with facial expressions and poses. Stepping Stone will allow users to quickly create visual guides using their own photos to learn essential life skills and daily routines. Users will be able to create talking picture books with Stories About Me and construct and speak sentences using symbols with Proloquo2Go. Next Step currently runs from The Bridge Works in Cheltenham Road, Dandenong. “We’re doing to be expanding that in to Springvale next year,” Mr Toovey said. “It’s going to run at the same location as our disability employment service. “It’s a very good starting point and it helps people get confidence. “We’re filling a gap, and a very important gap that can lead people to more inclusion in their working lives.” The Bridge was among 72 Our Neighbourhood Community grant recipients this year. The cash is designed to help build a more inclusive, connected society. 29 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 31 October, 2016

New show generation rides in By Casey Neill Alex Morgan has been a Dandenong Show fixture for more than 60 years, and is known to those involved with the annual event as “grandpa”. But his great-grandchildren and a herd of ponies are threatening to steal his limelight. The Journal met his daughter Lisa Wanless, granddaughter Amy Matthey, and six of his greatgrandchildren ahead of this year’s show, on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 November. “My mother (Janice) got her first Shetland, which became my Shetland, when I was two,” Lisa said. “Fifty-one years ago we started breeding and showing Shetlands, which then turned into miniatures as well. “I have 13 grandchildren at the moment, and two on the way. “They all want to be involved.” Lisa’s sister, Jayne Stuchbery, is also part of the pony world. “I think mother and my sister will be judging and stewarding at the show this year,” Lisa said. “It depends on what they need.” Lisa has eight horses on her Pakenham property, a combination of miniatures and Shetlands, and Janice keeps one miniature at her Narre Warren North home. “She’s a life member of the miniature ponies,” Lisa said. “We’d always had ponies and horses as kids growing up. “For some reason she wanted to show for herself but, of course, the Shetlands and the miniatures are small and easy for her to handle. “She’s had a lot of success breeding and showing over the years, winning numerous prizes at the Royal as well as at Dandenong Show.” Asked what made a good show pony, Lisa pointed out one of her Shetlands as “very typical of an English Shetland, where it’s got very heavy legs”. “She’s quite stocky in her build,” she said. “That red and white one, she’s got finer legs more like a pony legs. “I go more for the heavy legs because that’s what a Shetland should be, like what was in the Shetland Isles, whereas the finer ones are more

Swish ball is a light in the dark By Casey Neill A Dandenong gym and social session is offering fitness and fun for the blind and vision-impaired. Dandenong Oasis is hosting a Blind Sports and Recreation Victoria gym and water aerobics program each Monday during school terms from 11am. Margaret Wickham has been attending for three or four years. “I wouldn’t go to gym on my own,” she said. “We alternate between gym and the pool, so it makes it a lot more fun. “Our gym program includes half an hour of boxing as well, which is great fun. We mix it up quite a bit. “Our instructor is very encouraging. “He doesn’t set big goals, he always comments on how good we’re doing. “We just gradually step it up as time progresses.” A BYO lunch and a game of swish follows the session. “We can hear the ball, it has bottle caps in it,” Ms Wickham said. “People can hear the ball. “At least half the ones that play are totally blind. Some of us have some vision. “You have to judge where the ball is to hit it by hearing where it is. “We actually hit the ball under the wall in the middle of the table.” There’s “no aerial stuff ” involved, Ms Wickham laughed. “It just goes along the top of the table,” she said. “The good players are really fast. “You need good reflexes and you really need quite good concentration. “You tire quite quickly just because of the mental concentration needed, I think. “As soon as you start day dreaming you’ve had it!” Doveton’s Karren Martin also took up the program a few years ago. “I actually used to play table tennis when I went to school,” she said. “I thought, because I can’t play normal table

Ms Martin has an eye condition called retinitis pigmentosa. “I can see light and darkness,” she said. “I found out when I was about 17 that I had the eye disease, and in the last seven to eight years it’s got worse. I have to use a cane.” She’s enjoyed getting back in the water.

“I used to swim a lot and I enjoy the water,” she said. “In the water it seems with the exercises they’re a lot more strenuous. “It makes you work a bit harder.” Ms Wickham said about six people attended regularly and that more people were welcome. “Apart from the social contact – we’re like kids, really, it’s great to play together – it’s also good mental stimulation,” she said.

SPORT Hussey draws the Ridges crowd Aust (31) and Suren Ekanayake (31) all played vital knocks and each played some brutal strokes, while crowd drawer Dave Hussey only managed to make 8 before he fell to the groans of the crowd. Huss, as he is called affectionately by the cricketing world, started his innings with a dashing boundary through, before holing to young leftarm spinner Brayden Sharp. In the young spinner’s short career in cricket, this is sure to be his greatest highlight thus far. With 1.5 overs to spare, the Bucks toppled the Bloods. The game was perhaps an entre to what is set to be a mouthwatering main course, with both sides still yet to hit their peak. The champion will have another chance next Wednesday when the Bucks host Lynbrook in a T20 at Park Oval.

By Nick Creely The annual DDCA Twenty20 competition got off to a start on Wednesday 27 October with big hits, spectacular catches, surprising results but some unfortunate weather capping off the first round. Buckley Ridges v Springvale South Buckley Ridges 6-157 (T. Aust 31, S. Ekanayake 31, D. Watson 30, L. Fletcher 30, R. Priyan 2-16, J. Straker 2-44) d Springvale South 8-153 (R. Quirk 81, S. Mullaney 5-22, H. Ali 2-27) Streams of fans flocked to Park Oval to watch former International star David Hussey play for Buckley Ridges, with the champion batsman the headline act of Round 1 action. The current Melbourne Stars captain was just one of many talking points in an electrifying clash between two stellar sides. The Bloods, who have won the last two DDCA T20 titles, were going in as underdogs, something that has worked perfectly to their advantage before. With cars littered across the ground expectant of some fireworks from the T20 pro, the expectations were high in this heavyweight clash. There were stars everywhere but the foray of talent within the Bucks side was something to behold. Featuring not only Hussey, were captain Steven Mullaney and Luke Fletcher, who are both current first-class cricketers. With the Bloods batting first, they posted an ominous 8/153, with gun marquee Ryan Quirk slamming a destructive 81. The innings was brutal with three massive sixes and three fours leaving the lengthy crowd ducking for cover. It was a day to remember for the young star, having been named in the Victorian Metro Under

19 team just hours earlier. Bucks skipper Steven Mullaney bowled an astonishing spell, taking 5-22. Mullaney, 29, is a class above and will be one of the players to watch throughout the entire DDCA season. T20 legend and marquee player Dave Hussey also bowled but was quite expensive, finishing with 0-26 off 3, while Hussain Ali also impressed with 2-27 off his spell. With an imposing total to chase down, the firepower was just too much to handle for the

Bloods. It’s not as if the Bloods aren’t equipped with some great bowlers, it’s just that the Bucks possess one of the most potent batting line-ups ever seen in this competition. Some of the hitting was just too much for the small ground to handle, with one huge six landing in the lake. The ball had to be fished out with long tree branches by a member of the crowd, much to the amusement of both the crowd and players. Daniel Watson (30), Luke Fletcher (30), Troy

Zoom-zoom Zambora shoots well ahead of the pack Zambora Brockie fired the first shot ahead of Friday night’s $50,000 winner-takes-all Shootout with a resounding all-the-way win at Sandown Park on Thursday. After a luckless run in last Saturday’s Topgun, the dual Group One winner was sent to the boxes the $1.40 favourite and didn’t disappoint, jumping straight to the front and winning in 29.40. Zambora Brockie boasts a best time of 29.14 at Sandown Park and trainer Anthony Azzopardi believes there is a lot of improvement to come from his superstar. “I was hoping that he’d race up to the standard he’s been trialling,” said Azzopardi. “He’s clearly run the fastest time of the night and the track wasn’t fast. He’ll be a lot fitter next week.” Billed as the speed championship of Australia, the unique format brings together four of Australia’s fastest chasers as selected by the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club and Greyhound Racing Victoria. To minimise the chances of interference during the race, finalists were drawn at random and connections given the opportunity to choose their box from which they’ll start. Zambora Brockie was the last greyhound drawn but the result didn’t faze Azzopardi. “I think he’s the likely leader - box five isn’t going to worry him,” he said. “In my opinion, Dundee Osprey is the dog to beat but they’re all great dogs and all are capable of winning.” Following the draw, tab.com.au installed Dundee Osprey the $2.50 favourite for the event ahead of Zambora Brockie ($3). Dundee Osprey was the first greyhound drawn for the box draw and trainer Geoff Scott-Smith had no hesitation in selecting box one. Queenslander Outside Pass ($3.50) will jump from box three, while South Australian Worm Burner ($7.50) will exit box seven. Later in the night, Worm Burner closed out his preparations with a dazzling nine length victory at Angle Park, his 33rd win at his home track. The Shootout kicks off the three week Sandown Superdogs carnival on Friday 4 November which culminates in the world’s richest greyhound race, the $600,000 TAB Melbourne Cup, on Friday 18 November. 36 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 31 October, 2016

Caldwell takes Eagles’ helm By Nick Creely

Trainer Anthony Azzopardi has his gun sprinter Zambora Brockie finely tuned for Friday night’s $50,000 Shootout at Sandown Park.

The Doveton Eagles Football Club has announced its new senior coach for the 2017 season and appointed Simon Caldwell to the helm. Caldwell, 36, was selected from a strong pool of prospective candidates for the position with his thoughts on the game and approach to coaching standing out as the right fit for the direction of the club and ambitions for future on-field success. The newly appointed coach brings a vast amount of experience to the role, having previously coached Foster in the Alberton Football League, Kilsyth in the Eastern Football League, and most recently coaching Yarra Junction in the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League. Caldwell replaced veteran Corrie Wilson who has stepped down as the coach after just one season in the role. Doveton Eagles president Shane McGrath said Caldwell’s appointment is set to strengthen the club and help propel the side to build upon its third-place finish in 2016. “The idea of getting Simon down with his experience and his thoughts on the game is to, I guess, make us a more professional outfit. “He comes with a great support staff, he’s very well organised and he’s got a lot of structures and stuff he wants to bring to the club which we think will help us moving forward,” McGrath said. Simon has already begun working with the club on some new development for the coming season as the Eagles look to have on-field success in 2017. It is expected at this stage that the position will not involve a playing capacity, but it could remain a possibility. A date for the ‘meet the coach’ will be set by the club in the coming weeks.

DDCA - ROUND 3 - DAY 1 REVIEW Hallam Kalora Park v Berwick HALLAM Kalora Park is in the box seat for victory next week after dominating Berwick at Hallam Reserve on Saturday. Winning the toss and batting, the Bears were skittled for a disappointing 137 off 55.1 overs, with only Josh Holden (32) and Nick Shirt (24) providing any real resistance. The Hawks were well served by Jordan Hammond, who bowled excellently for his four wickets, while Jagveer Hayer, Steven Gilmour and Ben Hall all chimed in to leave the Bears in a tough spot heading into next week. In reply, the Hawks are currently 2-60 off 24 overs, with skipper Jarrod Goodes and all-rounder Ryan Crawford each with a wicket. Heinz Southern-Districts v Buckley Ridges A dominant five wicket haul from HSD allrounder Kaushual Weeraratne has set up an intriguing and intense contest at Reedy Reserve. Weeraratne took 5-32 off 17 overs as HSD dismissed Buckley Ridges for just 122 off 62.2 overs. The star all-rounder is going to be a major factor with the bat next week as HSD look to take a major scalp in what would be a real confidence booster for the club. Captain Steven Mullaney provided a lone hand for the Bucks, making a splendid 55 when others fell around him at an alarming rate. In response HSD are sitting on 1-18 off 17 overs, with Lukas Hoogenboom taking an early wicket. Bradley Downe (5) and skipper Matthew Cox (3) are set to resume next week, still 105 runs short of victory. North Dandenong v Narre Warren North Dandenong has put together a sizeable total, scoring 9/258 declared against Narre Warren at Lois Twohig Reserve. Both openers made runs for North, with Zafar Sheikh (23) and Shane Clarke (33) setting the tone early in the contest. North keeper Clayton McCartney (63) batted terrifically, and was ably supported by Seyed Mehmood (48), who played an aggressive knock. Magpies opening bowler Mitchell Shirt was brilliant all day, claiming 5-63 off 15 overs, while fellow bowler Matin Sultani (3-31) was also amongst the wickets. In response, the Magpies are currently 0-20 off 6 overs, with Zach Allen (13) and Mitchell Shirt (0) set to resume next week. Springvale South v Mordialloc Springvale South have struck a convincing first innings total at Alex Nelson Reserve. The Bloods, on the back of Tim Ford (51), skipper Craig Slocombe (45) and Dylan Quirk (34), were able to lift to 9-226 at the end of the day’s play. Seamer Stuart Squires was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with 3-60, including the prized wicket of both opening batsman. Parkfield v Dingley Manisha Dabarera has struck his maiden Turf 1 century for Parkfield, lifting his side to 174 at

VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET ROUND 6 - DAY 1 REVIEW SATURDAY was the kind of day tailor made for cricket. Warm sun, blue skies and a still wind brought about some quality cricket in Victoria over the weekend. Or so it seemed. For Dandenong’s players, they had to find something else to pass the time, because for reasons still yet too truly play out, the first day of their clash with Kingston Hawks at Walt Galt Reserve was cancelled. The Panthers would have been relishing the opportunity to further strengthen their hold on the upper echelon of the ladder in picture perfect conditions, but were instead faced with conditions unfit for use. Apparently pipes burst and water went underneath the covers, causing the pitch to have massive wet spots. Although this is yet to be confirmed, it is likely to cause major discussion throughout the week. Adding to this, the edge wickets on the square were too high, which means it is a possible hazard for the players. It is possible that the Panthers will take the matter further, and could ask for points regardless of next week’s result. Meanwhile, another local Premier side, Casey South-Melbourne, faced off with the Camberwell Magpies at Casey Fields. In stark contrast to the conditions at Walt Galt Reserve, the pitch and ground at Casey was something to behold. Skipper Lachlan Sperling won the toss and chose to bat, knowing all too well how perfect the conditions are to bat on. But the Swans started in disappointing fashion, losing openers Michael Wallace (14) and Ashan Wijayakumara (2) in the first ten overs. Sperling and Devin Pollock set about resurrecting the innings, playing patiently and grinding out a testing period before the first drinks break. But not long after drinks, Pollock fell for a well-made 36 and Sperling departed for 31, leaving the Swans at 4-98 with plenty of work to do. An entertaining and counter-attacking innings from Ryan Eaton (30) allowed the Swans back in the contest, before falling off against the bowling of Matt Dwyer. Nathan Lambden, most notably known as a bowler, played as important as a knock as there could be, making 32 not-out off 138 balls, an almost four-hour marathon effort that allowed the other batsman to score heavily around him. Dylan Hadfield scored an impressive 37, showcasing his noticeable improvement in the Premier ranks. The Swans showed true grit, grinding their way to a solid and potentially matchwinning 8-242 at stumps.

Steve Gilmour claimed 1/25 from 12 overs in a dominant day for Hallam Kalora Park against Berwick. 161202 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Parkfield Reserve. The number six played a splendid knock, before finally being dismissed for 101. Quick Andrew Dalby was in top-knick with the ball, picking up 4-29 off 11 overs, while Christo Otto (4-21) did most of his damage in the middle overs. In response, the Dingoes are currently 3-52, with Otto (4) and Brody Balfour (2) set to resume next week. Dandenong West v Cranbourne The Eagles have gone berserk on the back of a mammoth ton by Steven Spoljaric. The skipper blasted 153 as Cranbourne

amassed 7/343 in its match against the Bulls at Greaves Reserve. Spoljaric smashed five sixes in the whirlwind knock, leaving the Bulls with plenty of work to do next Saturday. Last year’s Turf 1 leading run-scorer looks in ominous touch after a simply irresistible innings. The reigning premiers have set themselves up for a dominant win next week, and will be looking at possible bonus points. Matt Chasemore (69) and Brandon Tyzzer (55) also played great knocks for the Eagles, while Bulls bowler Peter Atkinson (2-86) did as he always does, trying his heart out until the bitter end.

Rangers go down fighting against Spirit By Nick Creely THE Jayco Dandenong Rangers have been stung once again by the Bendigo Spirit, going down in a high-scoring encounter 85-94 at Dandenong Stadium on Friday night. The Rangers were once again rocked pregame, with star import Natalie Novosel again ruled out through lingering injury concerns. She is expected to be available for the Rangers next match. Nonetheless, it was a treat to watch for all basketball fans, as both sides shot excellently allnight, but the Rangers were ultimately overcome by the elite three-point shooting of the Spirit. The match was in stark contrast to the low scoring encounter between the two sides in Round 2, where the Rangers also fell short 59-44. The Rangers were once again well led by cocaptain Stephanie Cumming, who led the way with a game-high 23 points, as well as Lauren Scherf and Sara Blicavs, who both contributed strongly around the court.

Cumming now sits in the top four point scorers in the WNBL in 2016, with an impressive 18.4 points on average per game. Rangers star Ally Malott was also dynamic for the Rangers, picking up the MVP for her 16 point, six rebound and three assist performance. Rangers coach Larissa Anderson said despite changing things up, the Spirit were just clinical in their shooting at goal. “Credit to them; they shot the lights out,“ Anderson said. “I felt like they were really hurting us inside so I had to mix that up and I felt that did slow them down, but to their credit they started hitting all their shots. “I’m disappointed that we just didn’t close out hard enough and we didn’t play with the same defensive intensity that we had been previously. There were some really tough shots that they made, but they just killed us on the boards. We knew it was going to be a war tonight and that’s exactly what it was.“ The loss leaves the Rangers with a 3-2 start to

the season and in second place on the WNBL ladder. The Rangers will now need to regroup and focus on Monday’s big clash with the Melbourne Boomers, tip-off at 7.30pm. Keys stats Scores Jayco Rangers 85 (Stephanie Cumming 24, Lauren Scherf 17, Sara Blicavs 17, Ally Malott 16) v Bendigo Spirit 94 (Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe 19, Kelsey Griffin 16, Kerryn Harrington 15, Ashleigh Karaitiana, Nadeen Payne 14, Gabrielle Richards 10). Impressive Rays win joint award By Nick Creely Thomas Glen and Myles Poholke have capped off stellar seasons for the Dandenong Stingrays, with both players joint winners of the Best and Fairest award on Friday 21 October. The event, which was held at Dingley International Hotel, was a great celebration of the club’s achievements in the TAC Cup in 2016, as well as recognition of those who have performed at a high level on an individual note. Glen, 19, had a consistent season in the midfield for the Rays, averaging 20 disposals a game and showcasing his impressive ability to use the ball by foot. The young gun was unlucky not too be picked in the 2015 AFL Draft, but has given himself another chance to be on an AFL list next season. One game in particular stands out for the midfielder. In Round Five, Glen amassed 41 disposals in windy conditions, helping his side get over the line by 54 points against the Murray Bushrangers. Poholke, 18, had a brilliant season for the Rays as an inside midfielder, averaging 22 disposals, while he represented Vic Country and the AFL Academy throughout the season. What was also impressive for the young bull, was his ability to move forward and kick important goals this season. At the Draft Combine, Poholke also impressed and was a strong chance of having his name read out at the National Draft next month. In the National Carnival, Poholke also showcased his notable talent as an inside midfield, averaging 14 disposals for Vic Country. Other big names to win awards was the highly-touted key-forward Josh Battle, small forward Sam Fowler and a draft bolter in Bailey Morrish. All three players are set to be transitioned into life as an AFL footballer later next month. In terms of football, the Rays had a mixed

Star striker Brandon Barnes has officially re-committed to the Dandenong Thunder S.C, signing on for another season down at George Andrews Reserve. Barnes, 23, knocked back several lucrative offers to stay loyal to the club after a stunning season with the Thunder this year. There was on-going speculation that Barnes may head to the A-League eventually, notably with one of the big Melbourne clubs, and another season like this one will certainly ramp up those rumours once again. Only just over a month ago, the star striker took out the PlayStation 4 NPL 2 Victoria Best and Fairest at the Gold Medal Night at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre with an impressive 40 votes. The Englishman scored 41 goals in 25 matches last season, which included an eight goal effort against Nunawading City FC in May of this year. The haul, which was talked about all over Vic-

Brandon Barnes will bring his skills to George Andrews Reserve once again. 154841 toria, is the most goals scored by an individual in the top two tiers of Victorian Football since the

inception of the NPL. Dandenong Thunder Media Director Nait Ragipi told the club’s website that Barnes is a loyal person and a true clubman. “Loyalty is a word which we seldom hear when it comes to players and clubs in our modern game of football, so when we hear news of 2016’s most prolific striker rejecting multiple big money offers to put pen to paper for the same club, it comes as a shock to others. “It shows that there are still people, players in the game, that are true club-men, part of our family, part of the furniture, and Brandon is one of them,” Ragipi said. It seemed as if Barnes was never going to leave the Thunder, making his intentions clear back at the NPL Best and Fairest in early September when he talked about getting the club back to the division it was relegated from in 2015. Barnes seems to have unfinished business at the Thunder and will continue to be a nightmare proposition for NPL2 goalkeepers next season.

MOTORING Cars set to show their shine By Cam Lucadou-Wells NOTHING drops the jaw like an immaculate vintage car. Akoonah Park Men’s Shed members are rallying to a prostate cancer fundraiser, bringing some of their rare, preened vehicles out for show on 30 October. There’s the bold swagger to Maurice Hall’s 1965 Mustang coupe with red leather cabin and seats, and Nicholas Bolis’s short-deck-tailed 1961 Cadillac de Ville - both befitting the confident Sixties. That’s not to dismiss the charm of Eric Chaplin’s topless 1935 Chevrolet saloon, one of the few left in the world and with leather seats like a wellworn briefcase. For their owners, there’s well-deserved pride in these exhibits. Often there’s also a joke about the back-seat romance that have gone down as part of each car’s folklore. Mr Hall said his Mustang was a “one-off ” that he bought in 2000. His mate stripped it down to a shell and brought it back to immaculate life. “It drives beautifully. If I had it as a young boy, imagine the girls I would have had,” Mr Hall said. These days, he uses it as a run-around. Roger Young has owned his 1965 original HR Holden for close to 50 years. The vehicle, which has 500,000 kilometres on the clock, was first owned by famous car dealer Reg Hunt and was sold to Mr Young in 1967. It still gleams in its original paint and chromework, and is taken out on the road every week including for a recent 600-kilometre Sunday outing. Mr Young describes it as a “charming” drive. “I love it because it’s tactile. There’s no power

You know it after you’ve been driving it.” Mr Chaplin says his 81-year-old Master Tourer Chevrolet was just one of 199 built in the world. He knew of perhaps one other still in Australia, he said. This grand specimen was featured in the US mini-series The Pacific - about the Pacific Theatre of World War II. That job prompted Mr Chaplin to get a new fold-down sun-top for the car. it when out on a plumbing job and found out it was for sale. He said it drives like its vintage, and is slow to pull up on the mechanical brakes. “It’s a lot of fun, but.” Mr Bolis bought his bold Cadillac from the original owner in California three years ago. Though less luxurious than the Cadillac El Dorado, the car would have originally sold for close to the cost of a house. Its extravagance was emblematic of the postWorld War II boom and became a status symbol. Its awkwardly large turning circle and immense length makes it difficult for suburban outings but it still handles the corners during a Dan-
