Rocks in their head By Jolene Ogle RESIDENTS have been left shocked after vandals defaced the rocks at the popular Fairy Pools in Noosa National Park. Local Pat Isaacs wrote to Noosa Today sharing her outrage at the graffiti on the rocks that includes statements such as “skinny dipping allowed” plus other illegible words. “I’m absolutely outraged this has happened,” she said. “Is this what we want here and how do we stop it?” Ms Isaacs said the graffiti had been on the rocks for up to three weeks and has called on the community to stop any further damage to the rocks through vandalism. “It is heart-breaking to see the abominable way this pristine pool is being abused,” she said. Ms Isaacs also raised concerns over a growing trend of rock stacking at Tea Tree Bay, saying people shouldn’t disturb the natural landscape. “Many piles of precariously stacked rocks were evident (at Tea Tree Bay) and a child narrowly missed being injured when unstable rock towers tumbled,” she said. “The possibility of litigation cannot be ignored were such an injury to occur. The stacking also damages the rocks themselves. Last week two concerned locals removed the stacked rocks and returned them to their natural place. It will be interesting to see if the stacking occurs again.” Continued on page 2

Gentle title hat-trick

NOOSA Triathlon’s darling Ashleigh Gentle has claimed a hat-trick of Noosa titles, taking out her fourth win at the weekend to make it three in a row. The Rio Olympian soothed the sting of a disappointing Olympic campaign with her fourth Noosa title, while Dan Wilson, who was twice the bridesmaid in Noosa, finally added Australia’s most coveted title to his trophy cabinet. Wilson, who is based in Brisbane, said it meant a lot to finally snag the top spot. “To finally win, after not only being so close before, but also to join the honour roll of Noosa winners means a lot,” Wilson said. “Especially given I live just two hours down the road in Brisbane.” Gentle, who was 1.06 down after the 40km bike leg, joins Australian triathlon royalty Emma Frodeno (nee Snowsill), as the only Australian to claim four Noosa Tri titles. “At times in that race, I had to dig deep and think about what the Noosa title means,” Gentle said. Turn to pages 6 and 7 for all the Noosa Tri action from the weekend.

Residents have also raised concerns about the stacking of rocks, saying the towers could fall and injure someone.

Rocks in their head From page 1 Ms Isaacs said locals and visitors needed to be reminded to respect the natural beauty of Noosa, saying heavy fines should be imposed on anyone who vandalised the landscape. “It is so sad to think the beauty of our home is being disrespected so flagrantly, she said. Noosa Council declined to comment on the issue of vandalism, saying the solution lies with the Department of National Parks, but Mayor Tony Wellington said the Noosa National Park volunteers at the park entrance kept an eye on the park and phoned through to the ranger when they spotted an issue. The NPA was unavailable for comment prior to going to print, but Mayor Wellington said the NPA volunteers should be praised for their hard work keeping the park safe and clean for all users. The Department of Parks was contacted for comment but did not reply.

‘Big picture’ ideas for Noosa RESIDENTS are being urged to have their say on a new Noosa Plan as council starts work on the document that will shape Noosa’s look and feel for the next decade and beyond. To help the community get involved, residents will be able to comment on a discussion paper either online or at one of 11 upcoming consultation sessions. Mayor Tony Wellington said the Noosa Plan was a critical document that controlled land use and development throughout the shire. “Over the next three years council will work with the community to develop the new Noosa Plan. This will be the blueprint to shape Noosa for the next decade,” he said. The current Noosa Plan, developed in 2006, is 10 years old and due for review with councillor Wellington calling for ‘big picture’ ideas. “At this early stage in the planning process, we really want to hear residents’ ‘big picture’ ideas and how

they feel about Noosa. What is it you cherish most about Noosa, or what would you like to see change?” he said. Council has released a discussion paper to get the conversation started. It outlines broad subject areas the Noosa Plan will cover and is now live on council’s YourSay Noosa website at yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au. The paper calls for input on topics such as community, economy, housing, transport, environment and natural hazards. There is also focus on our distinct towns and local communities. The initial consultation phase will run until 12 December 2016. Council is urging the community to have a say on what Noosa should look like into the future and is holding consultation stands and sessions at the following locations: Kin Kin General Store on Thursday 3 November from 2-6pm. Pomona (main street) on Wednesday 9 November from 2-6pm.

Have your say on the new Noosa Plan, which will shape Noosa’s look and feel for the next decade and beyond. Noosaville (near the library) on Thursday 10 November from 2-6pm. Cooran General Store on Tuesday 15 November from 9am-noon. Boreen Point (opposite general store) on Wednesday 16 November

from 2-6pm. Noosa Junction (Arcadia Way) on Thursday 17 November from 9.30am-12.30pm. Cooroy (near CWA Hall) on Tuesday 22 November from 2-6pm.

Noosa Farmers’ Markets on Sunday 27 November from 7-10am. Noosa Heads Surf Club (lawn area) on Sunday 4 December form 7.30-9.30am. Other ways to have a say include visiting Noosa Council at 9 Pelican Street, Tewantin, Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 5pm, or visit yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au to comment online. Comment can be sent in the mail to PO Box 141, Tewantin, Qld 4565. Council will consider the community’s input to the discussion paper and start drafting the new Noosa Plan in 2017 with a draft version of the new planning scheme expected to be available for community review and feedback in 2018. Moving towards zero waste

A nurse aid post that John Hilton will help to build in Sambora on Vella la Villa Island.

Hilton happy to help out INSTEAD of relaxing and enjoying his retirement in Noosa, Rotary Noosa Daybreak member John Hilton prefers to travel to the Solomon Islands and build homes for local communities. Mr Hilton is on his way to the Solomons this week along with a team of Rotary members to carry on works improving support facilities for remote islands. This will be Mr Hilton’s second visit to the islands, with the team last year building a toilet block and health clinic, installing water tanks at a school and connecting solar power to three health clinics. “Our trip this time is to build a nurse aid post at Sambora on Vella la Villa Island from scratch,” he said. “This project will be built by Rotarians from Mooloolaba, Noosa, Gympie and Sydney Cove.

a month now,” he said. “It’s a massive reduction in waste going to landfill - I challenge any other market to beat us,” Mr Stanley said. Council’s waste education officer Emma Menzies says patrons and stallholders are doing a great job of segregating their waste before they bin it. Council is working with other local event organisers to help them repeat the market’s success. Council requires all major events held on council land to provide recycling bins for patrons. Council will supply the lids and covers free of charge. “Event organisers are really happy to have the recycling bins as well as trial the new bin covers. Because they are so bright and distinctive the covers have helped reduce contamination of the recycle bins with food and other rubbish,” Ms Menzies said.

NOOSA Farmers Market has halved the amount of rubbish it sends to landfill each week, with a little help from council. The market has joined council’s Towards Zero Waste campaign with such success organiser Shane Stanley has challenged other local events to follow the market’s lead. Council supplies 20 brightly-coloured covers for the market’s bins, to distinguish the yellow recycling bins from the red general rubbish bins. Mr Stanley has also introduced a cardboard recycling bin, while local farmers are recycling the market’s green waste. “Our patrons have really got behind the cause. The rubbish bins used to be so full that our contractor had to empty our dumpster once a week. But with so many patrons using the recycling bins, we only empty it once

Two of these nurse aid posts have been built previously by Rotary teams.” Mr Hilton said he would travel from Brisbane to Honiara then fly by light plane to Gizo before travelling onwards by long boat to Sambora where he will live without electricity and hot water for two weeks - but you won’t find Mr Hilton complaining. “The reward is quite incredible when you see the gratitude on the smiling faces of these islanders, young and old, for the improvements we make to their living conditions,” he said. “Oh and we are also taking surfboards and footballs across for the kids, which are donated by the Sunshine Coast people. I wouldn’t miss the experience for the world. This is Rotary improving the lives of others once again.”

Tree clearing controls ticked off by the state THE State Government has approved new tree clearing controls among recent amendments to Noosa’s planning scheme. Council’s planning and environment manager Kerri Coyle said for most property owners the changes wouldn’t make a lot of difference. “However, if you wish to lop a tree because you’re worried it is unsafe or too close to your house, you’ll need to lodge an application with council. It is free to apply,” she said. Ms Coyle said council had to amend the current scheme to include tree-clearing because of a Sunshine Coast Council decision prior to deamalgamation. “During the amalgamated years, the council decided not to continue

with the three former shires’ individual sets of local laws which controlled vegetation clearing. Instead they created a temporary planning scheme provision as a short-term way to regulate these matters,” she said. “That provision has lapsed, so these new amendments simply make sure Noosa Council can continue to control tree clearing until our new planning scheme takes effect.” Ms Coyle said tree clearing controls were one of the reasons Noosa was so leafy. Trees in urban areas significantly reduce energy consumption in summer. Studies have noted that the net cooling effect of a young, healthy tree is equivalent to 10 room-sized air-conditioners. And of course trees also prevent erosion. Furthermore, they filter

wind, noise and air pollutants. On top of that they store carbon and produce oxygen. “We’ve hosted an information afternoon for local tree-lopping businesses to explain the changes to them in more detail and answer their questions,” Ms Coyle said. The changes are among various planning scheme amendments council proposed in 2014 to freshen up Noosa’s 10-year-old planning scheme. Those changes have finally been approved by the State Government. All changes will be reassessed as council develops its new planning scheme. The first stage of public consultation on the planning scheme is now beginning. Cash for creek’s heritage By Hollie Harris THE Heritage Park Bushland Care Group has received $15,000 in funding from water and waste management company SUEZ to help contribute to the conservation of Wooroi Creek in Heritage Park. The grant is a part of the SUEZ Community Grants program which awards funding to community organisations and projects across Australia that have a positive impact in their local communities. State Member for Noosa Glen Elmes spoke at the cheque presentation and said this was conservation in practice, exhibited by people who had a real love for the environment. “Joan Heavey, Group Leader of the Heritage Park Bushland Care Group set herself a goal to continue her work in this area until she turns 85 years of age, thankfully we will have her for a few decades yet,” Mr Elmes said.

“To be honest, the community could not afford to pay for the work that Joan and her team do. It is priceless because the tasks are endless as are the hours of work involved. “You simply have to see to believe the significant in-roads Joan and the team have made in the eradication of the invasive Singapore daisy along Wooroi Creek - the difference they have made is nothing short of amazing, and so is the poison free innovation with which they approach the problem. “It is so encouraging to see commercial operations give back to the environment through community groups like this, and I applaud the SUEZ group for their generous grant program,” he said. The funding will be used to support the Heritage Park Creek and Community Alliance with the removal of invasive weeds from Wooroi Creek banks as well as additional planting, signage and educa-

tional material for the community. Noosa-based Plant manager for SUEZ, Michael O’Connell, was delighted to present the cheque to Heritage Park Bushland Care Group Leader Ms Joan Heavey at the cheque ceremony on Wednesday. “It was my pleasure to present the cheque to the Heritage Park Bushland Care Group. Looking after our waterways and parklands is an excellent way to engage the local community,” Mr O’Connell said. “SUEZ is proud to be supporting the conservation of both Heritage Park and Wooroi Creek, which is not only a feeder creek to the Noosa River but home to several threatened species in the area,” he said. The SUEZ Community Grants program is now in its third year and the company has donated more than $400,000 to community organisations across Australia.

The Heritage Park Bushland Care Group received $15,000 to contribute to the conservation of Wooroi Creek.

Jason’s dream come true

Jason Wellington with Dylan from Maroochy River Jet Ski Hire, who helped make Jason’s dream come true. Right: Jason finally got a chance to zip around the water on a jet ski.

FOR many thrill-seekers, zipping around the water on a jet ski is easy going, but for Endeavour Foundation member Jason Wellington it has been a long-term dream. Endeavour Foundation resource and development officer Kellie Glare said many of the people the organisation supports planned goals they wanted to achieve and then aimed to complete their goal with the support of staff at Endeavour. Jason, who attends the Endeavour Foundation Wallace Park Learning and Lifestyle facility, planned to go jet skiing.

“Jason has epilepsy- Lennox Gastaut syndrome which means throughout the day he can frequently suffer uncontrolled seizures,” Kellie said. “But, with a well-organised support network, in a joint venture of both family, friends and staff at Wallace Park and Nambour Learning and Lifestyle and local business, Jason’s dream finally became a reality.” Dylan of Maroochy River Jet Ski Hire supported Jason throughout the jet ski ride and Kellie said he went out of his way to make sure Jason had an experience of indescribable

proportions. Jason said he enjoyed jet skiing and while he hadn’t yet set his next goal he planned to have a good think about it before he did. “It was a good day for it,” he said. “I enjoyed the whole motion of the jet ski.” Kellie said she wanted to thank the people who had made Jason’s big day a reality. “Thank you to all the team at Maroochy Jet Ski Hire for making Jason’s long- time goal an adventure that wants him coming back for more!” she said.

Kids are giving it everything HUNDREDS of mini-athletes converged on Chaplin Park on Saturday to take part in the Coates Hire Noosa Superkidz triathlon and the Tingirana Noosa Special triathlon. The kids’ tri events are perhaps the highlight of the weekend, or certainly a must-see for any spectator, as participants run, cycle and swim their hardest as they complete the course. Parents were seen running alongside their children as they encouraged them to ride as fast as they could, while family and carers supported and encouraged participants in the Tingirana Noosa Special triathlon. The kids’ triathlon events are a heart-warming reminder of good sportsmanship and the importance of giving everything a go. There were no winners at the events, only participants who ran, swam and cycled with everything they had.

Top title for Wilson, Gentle BRISBANITE Dan Wilson has taken out the top title at the Noosa Triathlon on Sunday, after finishing in second place twice before. Wilson, who recently announced his retirement from ITU racing, finished second in 2013 and fell an agonisingly three seconds short of the win in 2014, knew if he finished the bike leg with a lead of over a minute he’d be in good shape for the win. With long course specialist Josh Amberger, the partner of Gentle, they turned a one minute lead out of the water into a 1:30 lead over pre-race favourites Ryan Fisher and Jake Birtwhistle at the end of the bike leg. “I knew if I could get a lead of over a minute off the bike on Jake and Ryan that I’d be in with a shot,” Wilson said. His words proved prophetic as he ran strongly over the final 10km to hold on for a 17-second win. Birtwhistle held on for second with Fisher in third. For the women, Ashleigh Gentle took out first place after she found herself chasing all race, in a carbon copy of the 2015 race the Gold Coast’s Daniella De Francesco lead from the gun, with Sydney’s Natalie Van Coevorden in tow. After the 1500m swim, the pair had a lead of over 1:30 on Gentle, after the bike the gap to De Francesco was 46 seconds, with Van Coevorden a further 20 seconds up the road. Gentle quickly closed the gap to De Francesco and had Van Coevorden in her sights. Van Coevorden was chasing redemption after taking a wrong turn in 2015’s race, cutting the bike course by 13km leading to her disqualification.

“I wanted to be remembered as someone other than the girl who went the wrong way,” she said. By the 5km mark of the run, Gentle had claimed the lead and was on the way to securing her fourth Noosa title. “I knew I had to take my run and do my best, traditionally it’s my strongest leg, so I had to take the positives from that,” she said. “When I could see Natalie, I was pleased to catch her at 5km and the last 5km I just wanted to control it until I got to the finish.” Van Coevorden will now be remembered as the girl who finished second in Noosa, with Melbourne’s Charlotte McShane running strongly to finish in third. Gentle was thrilled to join Frodeno as the only female to win three consecutive titles, and with a total of four titles move within one of the Beijing Olympic Gold Medallists record five Noosa wins. “It’s great, I have said a couple of times I am so privileged to have my name next to hers, she’s achieved so much more than me as an Olympic Gold Medallist and world champion multiple times. She has set the bar so high in Australia for so long now; it’s motivating for us now to keep working and chasing her achievements.” Results: Men 1. Dan Wilson 1:49.41 2. Jacob Birtwhistle 1:49.58 3. Ryan Fisher 1:51.03 Women 1. Ashleigh Gentle 2:02.26 2. Natalie Van Coevorden 2:03.30 3. Charlotte McShane 2:05.03

Hundreds pound the pavement in pink By Jolene Ogle IT was Hastings Street’s turn to become a sea of pink on Friday morning 28 October as hundreds of runners pounded the pavement for the annual Noosa Tri Breakfast Fun Run. Runners donned their best pink gear and gathered at Noosa Woods before running down Hastings Street and back up Noosa Main Beach to complete the 5km Barambah Organics Noosa Breakfast Fun Run. All funds raised on the day go directly to the National Breast Cancer Foundation to help them reach their goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030.

Remarkable ON READING Frank Lewins’ comment (Noosa Today, 27 October) about refusing the release of donated equipment for community use, to say I am dumbfounded would be the understatement of the year. This leads me to question the interest both he and the Sunshine Hospice Board have for the people in need in our community. If they would like to decamp, I’ll gladly pay their one-way fare. Paul Norton, Lake Macdonald.

LENSCAPE

Talk, not petition I WOULD like to reiterate my concern (Noosa Today, 20 October) that three state members including the Minister for Education Kate Jones believe the starting point to negotiate future transport solutions for NDIS recipients is to petition the Federal Government rather than pick up the phone. In my opinion if you want to contribute to a solution you must participate in the process. You do the work, find the answers and report back. What we do know is that the move toward the National Disability Insurance Scheme will benefit the families concerned with individualised funding packages that include funding to cover transport costs. It seems the Minister is concerned more about the bus operators who may need job security post 2019 when the changes come into effect. Why drag the children and their families into this debate when they have enough on their plates already? We have between now and 2019 to ensure the right system is in place for each and every child. Somehow I don’t think a petition will fix it. Glen Elmes, Member for Noosa.

It's illegal? WE WRITE in regard to the dispute between the Sunshine Hospice Ltd board and the recently-formed Katie Rose Cottage Ltd, a new entity created by the large number of dedicated former volunteers, including the original founders. We read Dr Frank Lewins’ statement (Noosa Today, 27 October) that the board of the Sunshine

THIS mesmerising and truly stunning shot was taken by Billy Neaves on a very still morning at Lake Cooroibah last week. Simply magic. If you have a wildlife or landscape image to submit for Lenscape, please email it to newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au Hospice would not “return” the locked-up hospice equipment to the new Katie Rose Cottage because it would be “illegal.” Please explain! What law prevents equipment donated to Katie Rose Cottage in the first place being used for its intended purpose, especially as new premises have now been acquired? Does the Sunshine Hospice board have any plans in the forseeable future to actually use this equipment? It would seem that the board has the impression that it owns this equipment, not that they are merely custodians. There is an immediate use for the

equipment, and it must be released. The “company assets” to which Dr Lewins refers were donated in good faith by the community to the hospice known popularly as “Katie Rose Cottage” and not to some nebulous “Sunshine Hospice,” wherever that is or will (or won’t) be. It would seem that the current board of which Dr Lewins is chairman has totally forgotten the original purpose of the hospice as envisaged by the founders. There have been several promises from the board over the past few months re imminent

possible partnerships and re-opening plans. Not one has actually been announced. Any news about the purpose-built government-funded Sunshine Hospice that will also be a private hospital? Any constructive news at all from Sunshine Hospice Ltd? The new Katie Rose Cottage Committee and the many volunteers are working very hard to bring back the muchneeded hospice with a loving atmosphere to the community of the Sunshine Coast. Helga Thiermann and Dr (PhD) William Barry, Verrierdale.

LETTERS Shocking risk IT HAS been reported that council has agreed to go ahead with an electric bus trial despite a report being presented which reveals that council will have to cough up an additional $142,953 in infrastructure costs which Energex has refused to cover. This is in addition to a similar amount which Translink has agreed to cover. This cost is to pay for infrastructure which the report says may have “no future purpose". In addition, the report indicates that council has not fully costed the future expenses that may arise in this project. In a previous letter to your newspaper, I questioned the costings and whether the appropriate research had been done by council before they approved this project. The following week Noosa Today published a letter from a council representative stating that the appropriate research and expenditure had been investigated, and that ratepayers could be assured they were being looked after. I am not confident that this is the case. Ken Coleman, Tewantin.

Just sad, really SO THIS is really sad in that a small group of disgruntled volunteers along with an overly emotional “co-founder" presume they can just “set up a hospice”. As for the equipment, it was donated to the Sunshine Hospice the care arm of which was strangely allowed to be called a different name. Most of this equipment won’t fit into a private house; Sue Story doesn’t know all the beds are different to the old ones that were there. One is very specialised and staff would need training. Hoists and standing machines etc would be very difficult or impossible to manoeuvre on a set-up like that. This goes back to the fact that they thought they could march into the old place and take it over! Then it was put up for sale. I’m afraid this is being swept along by this co-founder who always wanted to drag it back to this homely cottagy way of delivering care which was proven not to work. Despite what she has said in the press, it wasn’t open and

Post your letters to: 36 Mary St, Noosaville, 4566 or email: newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au

working for several years, in fact it was closed on and off during a period of a couple of years or so. The last incarnation of the place with a change in model of care kept it open for nearly four years until the money ran out. But that’s not an excuse to bring in all the volunteers again using them in inappropriate areas to keep the cost down. This will include letting volunteers have access to medical notes and giving everyone a full handover on the patients’ needs. Something that was rightly stopped but will be restarted again by their general manager who was at the old place first as a volunteer then a volunteer manager, who made his thoughts known very strongly when access to notes was stopped by the RNs due to confidentiality issues. Also palliative care in Queensland is overseen by Queensland Health who I can’t see supporting a private house put on the country run by ladies who ran op shops and an RN in the co-founder who hasn’t practiced for a good while, oh and a general manager who worked in environmental services in WA. The same person who was kept on at the old hospice as the fund-raising manager for a few months after all the clinical staff were made redundant. Then was sacked when he started to get involved with Carol Raye’s group. The truth is death and dying attracts some strange people, who all become experts quickly! If an intensive care unit closed you wouldn’t get volunteers from the general public setting one up. Palliative care is its own speciality and this whole thing is extremely disrespectful to the staff who were successful for nearly four years. In fact, that time has been completely ignored by this so-called committee, who obviously know best. At the end of the day it is the person who is dying we should all be worried about. They deserve professional loving care. Gary Cox (RN), Pelican Waters.

Detestable Liberals THERE is nothing more detestable in life than the mindset of the Liberal voter. Swathed in a fug of their own self-importance these selfish people would have you believe anything other

than the facts of life as evidenced in science. Humans evolved to the point of a planet spanning species through one thing and one thing only - co-operation. Is it possible to defeat a sabretooth cat in one versus one combat? Oh well, that wasn’t necessary because the Earth is only 6000 years old and we were created as the dominant species in situ ... that’s right, huh? No co-operation needed ... you know because God did not need help creating the universe, and we are like Him so we can create our own universe just through self-striving, self-reflection of the Almighty Lord and the will of the individual and all the freedoms that the mighty individual can wield. There is a couple of terms for this style of thinking, self-aggrandising on a scale that would make God quail in fear ... it involves the word “ ... fantasy". I’m sure you know which term I mean. However I’m prepared to take it a lot further. You see in the wonderfully provocative book “A Brave New World" society is biologically socially designed. Alpha and Betas at the top and the Epsilon Plus at the bottom. In our “society" they got it all wrong, its the “Epsilon Plus Semi Morons" who are currently leading the debate.. and where are the Alphas and Betas? Well they are counting their money of course with no concern as to which direction the morons are taking us. Rest assured the evidence of my claims are extremely obvious when you read the contributions, highly-paid contributions, of people who have absolutely no clue about and are completely untrained (in sociology). People whose level of no evidenced ideological drivel takes me back to the Gotterdammerung capitalism of the '80s and '90s. Credlin, Devine, Kelly are on massive incomes to fill your mind with the most putrid demonic sulphur for the brain. Its OK though people are switching off when Liberals in Australia (and world) talk. Though if the people like Credlin keep pushing their disgusting social agenda Australia will be torn apart by community instability. But not before the mindless, power hungry, most putrid humans who have set foot on this Earth (Liberals and capitalists) are torn apart first. Dylan White, Doonan.

Blind faith I HAVE to admire Steve Hall for his blind faith in those purveyors of fiction - the IPCC and its acolytes. How does he explain climategate, glaciergate, amazongate, NASAgate, Pachaurigate and a host of other “gates”. Thousands of independent scientists have issued signed statements that there is no scientific evidence to support the hypothesis that human produced CO2 is causing catastrophic global warming. That aside, let us get a few of the facts straight: The rate of warming in the 20th century of 0.8 to 1.0 degrees C was not catastrophic and well within the average rate of warming/ cooling of +/- 2.5 degrees C per century for the last 10,000 years; Global temperatures have been two to three degrees C higher than today during the Pliocene, Holocene and Minoan warm periods; There is no direct and verifiable empirical evidence that directly relates human produced CO2 with global warming. As Steve Hall points out the hypothesis of catastrophic anthropogenic global warming (CAGW) is based mainly on “modelling and observing the predictions from the models”. The earth’s climate is too complex to model, as freely admitted by the CSIRO; Since 1997 there has not been a significant increase in global temperatures despite a nine per cent increase in CO2; and It is an undeniable fact that if the wind farms had not been built and SA’s power was being delivered by the now mothballed fossil fuel power stations, a state-wide outage would have been avoided. Before investing further in intermittent energy sources such as solar and wind, put the money into energy storage so that cities, industry etc can be powered when the sun doesn’t shine and the wind doesn’t blow. Phillip Rutherford, Cooroibah.

Struggling with weight? Never enough energy? Can’t pinpoint the cause? You may have developed multiple chemical sensitivity. Have you been battling with weight issues and tried every diet and exercise to date? Is constant fatigue getting you down? Are hormones wreaking havoc on your quality of life? Anxiety or depression getting worse not better? Problems with skin, respiratory, joint or digestive issues? Numerous factors can play a role, as to whether an individual develops what is known as multiple chemical sensitivity, a hyper-response to even the lowest levels of both toxic and non-toxic chemical substances. This sensitivity can be inherited, however it may also depend on an individual’s exposure and their environment.

Symptoms can range from rashes, skin irritation, itchy ears, dark circles under the eyes, muscle cramps, headaches, memory impairment, poor concentration, depression, anxiety, coughing, wheezing, joint pain, constipation, diarrhoea, food intolerances, addiction to food, thyroid imbalances or premenstrual symptoms. Occupational, domestic and environmental settings is where exposure is highest. Other risk factors can be a poor diet or nutritional deficiencies, obesity, kidney or liver disorders. Medications we take, personal hygiene items we use on our body, cosmetics, cleaning products and the kinds of plastics we use on a daily basis, can all place a heavier burden on our livers to detoxify us, fast tracking us down the path to chemical sensitivity. We know the liver plays a major role in our toxicity levels, so comprehensive detoxification profiling is imperative, but other contributing elements also need to be identified, such as food intolerances. Your nutritional status is assessed, along with testing for any genetic abnormalities, bacterial or viral infections, along with guidance on how to minimise exposure for the future. Misdiagnosis is common due to the varied and multiple symptoms that are often seen with this type of condition, so ensure you seek advice from one of our trained integrative practitioners who can assess your risk of chemical sensitivity. A good fit for the latter years A NEW Sunshine Coast Council initiative, funded by the Queensland Mental Health Commission, will give over-50s the chance to improve their mental health and wellbeing. Registration is now open for the free Healthy Sunshine Coast Seniors 16-week program which aligns with the Sunshine Coast Social Strategy target of maintaining our region’s status as the healthiest in the state. Community portfolio councillor Jenny McKay said the Sunshine Coast Social Strategy highlighted the importance of ensuring people are safe, healthy, feel valued, embraced and connected. “Last month we launched the Healthy Sunshine Coast health and well-being program which proved extremely popular and now we shine the spotlight on our seniors, Cr McKay said. “Healthy Sunshine Coast Seniors is delivered in partnership with Community Focus and Sunshine 60 and Better. “This program is tailored for the over-50s and is an opportunity for them to acknowledge and reflect upon their mental health and to take action to improve their wellbeing. “It is quite fitting this program will commence during Social Inclusion Week from November 19 to 27 as it encourages seniors to connect, to build networks and address isolation. Cr McKay said Healthy Sunshine Coast Seniors would be delivered in two stages.

.

Keep fit and active after 50 with a free 16-week program run through council. “Stage one runs for six weeks and will assist individuals to set goals to improve their physical health and will be followed by an experiential session connecting them with existing community-based activity programs, Cr McKay said. “The second stage delivered over

10 weeks will see seniors paired with a Peer Support Worker to implement cognitive and physical tools for improvement of mental wellbeing while connecting them with established networks and services in the community. “The program is available for up

to 30 participants across the Sunshine Coast and will include lunch and transport if necessary for residents living in rural and remote areas or where public transport is not an option. “The sessions will be held at Maroochydore Neighbourhood Centre

from 10am to 12.30pm on Wednesdays, commencing on November 21, he said. Bookings for these sessions are essential. Visit council’s website and search Healthy Sunshine Coast to register today.

King Social plays this Friday 4 November at The V Room, Villa Noosa.

live today NOOSA’S LIFESTYLE GUIDE

Something for all tastes SUNSHINE Coast music lovers are set for a treat this week as The V Room plays host to acts from France, North Queensland and out West in their most expansive weekend offering to date. The V Room, the latest Sunshine Coast live music spot operating inside the existing Villa Noosa Hotel, has hosted a wide range of acts since the September opening night including DZ Deathrays, The Backsliders featuring Rob Hirst of Midnight Oil,

Groovin’ the Moo favourites Pandamic and Sydney rock act Lepers and Crooks among many others. This week sees the popular new venue play host to international Dub Reggae DJ Naaman from France on Thursday night 3 November, popular FNQ city meets country band King Social, fresh off a Bigsound slot on Friday night 4 November and a special night of music celebrating the songs of Aussie icon Paul Kelly on Saturday night 5 November. Performing this Friday night, the

unlikely mates at the heart of King Social look like the stragglers at the worst ever UN Convention – there’s an ocker cowboy, a Greek hippy, a rapping Scottish/Aboriginal, a Fijian with an infectious smile, and – when his beard is in full-force – a lead guitarist who could easily be mistaken for Ned Kelly. Performing with gusto and passion, King Social has amassed a cult following in its home stomping ground of North Queensland that is quickly catching across Australia.

Their live shows have been described as “electrifying“ and “completely addictive”; and, like a siren’s song, frequently draw crowds in the thousands to be swept up in the good-time vibes that seep from King Social. From the first song they’ll win you over with a masterful mix of urban rock and hip-hop, while still paying homage to their country roots. Venue booker Christian Tryhorn of Beats Cartel said: “We’re trying to deliver a well-rounded program

of music at The V Room week in week out, something to appeal to all tastes. This weekend is a perfect example of that. Pretty excited for the touring acts“. The variety won’t stop for the rest of the year at the Noosa venue either with shows confirmed with acts such as OKA, Lagerstein, Mosh For Daniel a metal benefit gig for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, Owen Campbell and more. World moves to a Celtic beat THE much loved Barleyshakes return to home ground for a family-friendly concert to be held at Sunspace in Doonan, on Sunday 6 November, from 3pm. After a massive 10-week tour of Europe across seven countries, the Shakes are excited to be back home on the coast. Brewed in Ireland and distilled in Australia the Barleyshakes are a Celtic band with world music influences who combine intense energy, beautiful harmony and driving dance rhythms in their live performances.

Adored throughout Australia and beyond for their “bent” Irish sound, they are winners of the Queensland Music Award for World Music. Bring your dancing shoes as the event will kick off at 3pm with a good old bush dance and as it’s an open air event on the Sunspace outdoor stage, it will be weatherpermitting. Sunspace is the perfect venue for this community event with alfresco dining, beers and wines available and entry only $10 or $25 for a family ticket.

Summer treats by specialists JOIN patissier extraordinaire Adriano Zumbo, Tasmanian born Italian celebrity chef Massimo Mele and Aromas Noosa head chef Jules Santisi for a celebration of summer. Massimo Mele is known for his hearty Italian fare, and is opening a new restaurant in Martin Place, Sydney, in March 2017. Adriano Zumbo is famous for his colourful and elaborate sweet creations, as well as his recent television show Zumbo’s Just Desserts. Both chefs are regulars to the Noosa Food and Wine event, and Aromas Noosa head chef Jules Santisi is excited to share his kitchen with them both for an evening created to showcase the region and all it has to offer. The trio has created a menu that celebrates the abundant produce available on the Sunshine

Coast during summer, with some of the ingredients coming from the Maravista Farm project. Maravista Farm is a stunning 250 hectare working macadamia farm in the Noosa Hinterland and is a source of fresh, organic and locally grown produce for the Ogilvie Group of venues which include Rickys, Wood Fire Grill, Locale Noosa and aromas noosa. This is one of the first events in which aromas can showcase the produce grown on the fertile lands and rolling hills of Maravista Farm. A Taste of Summer will be held on Saturday 26 November from 6.30pm at Aromas Noosa on Hastings Street. Seats are $145 per person and tables are limited, so bookings are essential and can be purchased from www.aromasnoosa.com.au.

PSYCHOLOGIST Dave Clark of Ripple Psychology reflects on the gentle giants of the sea. As the last of our whales leave our warm waters for the cooler Antarctic Ocean to feed their calves, it is apt to reflect on what these peaceful can teach us. Many of us, from boats and kayaks but also from cliffs and headlands, will have seen these playful animals breaching in the waters not far from shore. Although most remain un-

certain as to the exact reason that whales regularly breach the water, a number of theories exist. One is that the resounding splashing sound is a way of communicating, and perhaps even building or strengthening relationships between whales. Another is that it is a navigational aid as the giants plot their way south. A third theory is that the breaching is a ‘tune-up’ - a way of cleaning off barnacles and other parasites. Perhaps, these whales

could inspire people. Whether one chooses to focus on building relationships and working on communication with those around us, or on seeking assistance as our own courses to our preferred futures are chartered, or even deciding to shed old habits as part of our own tune-up - help is at hand. Ripple Psychology is proud to be working with many determined locals to assist them moving towards their preferred futures. Contact us if you’d like to join the migration!

By Jack Mangrove ON THE Noosa River, fishing at night has really been producing the goods. A lot of people don’t realise how good the fishing can be at night, particularly with lures and light gear, stealth is the key with little or no light and all quiet on board the boat, you can really target those larger fish. One such fish that responds well at night time is the Mangrove Jack. Jacks hide in their snags all through the day but come out to feed at night and can be found feeding out on the flats, large paddle tailed soft plastics worked slowly can produce some great jack. For those of you who are not night owls and prefer an early start, fishing the river mouth has also paid off, and bream, trevally and tailor have all been claimed over the last week. Whiting are also in good numbers and freshly pumped yabbies and live worms have been the go to bait. With summer approaching the beaches are the place to be. Being up nice and early and timing it with an incoming tide and you are in good stead, Noosa’s North Shore, Sunshine Beach, Perigian Beach and all the way down to Mudjimba have been the place to be with some excellent catches being reported. Make sure you look for the gutters with the tide moving in, bream, whiting, tailor and plenty of dart are around. A couple of the most favoured baits for the beach is a lightly weighted peeled prawn, small pillies, mullet and bonito fillet. Cast out into a

Dave Tunnington with a 1.2m Cobia. surf gutter and allowed to drift under the foam too where the fish feel safe. The mackerel are starting to show up with schools of both school and spotted mackerel tearing through bait fish schools around Laguna Bay. The good old floater has been working well, for the lure anglers give slugs and stick baits a go. North reef has been good for cobia, moses perch and sweetlip and the last of the bigger snapper. Sunshine Reef has been great for sweetlip pan sized squire and the perfect table fish coral trout. Double Island Reefs have been worth the trip when the weather allows with red emperor, snapper and plenty of mixed reefies. Soft plastics and micro jig are really taking off with the bottom bouncers and in some cases are starting to out fish bait. The great thing about them is that you tend not to get the pickers and catch those quality fish. On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures!

Students step up a notch THE first students of the Karate Budokan International Karate Masters Training Program for people over 50 have officially completed their grading examinations to move up from a white belt to a yellow/white stripe belt. The members of the group range in age from 60 to 80 and have attended class each week with extra one-on-one training when needed. The students were presented their new belts and a certificate at a graduation ceremony and instructor Garry Maher said the atmosphere was nothing short of exhilarating. “Of significance was the fact most of the students

are from professional backgrounds including a medical practitioner, a police officer, geo-physicist, and back manager, radio broadcaster and public servant,” he said. “Each student, to a person, shared their great sense of achievement for a job well done, with each looking forward to continuing their karate journey in the hope that one day, they will achieve their black belt.” Garry said some of the group members have said they have never felt better in their lives. “Indeed, their enthusiasm and motivation are infectious,” he said.

Good nights

A STRONG team performance has seen Sunshine Beach win the inaugural Noosa District Schools Netball competition. The competition was hosted by Coolum State School with eight schools contesting the event. The grand final was played against St Thomas More with Sunshine Beach going to halftime with a five point lead. An enthusiastic but tense team took the court for the second half in front of a crowd who had stayed for the grand final. A series of unanswered goals allowed Sunshine to claim victory with a 16-3 score line. Sunshine Beach State School netball coach, Christine O’Toole, was excited with the success and has hint-

ed that "Sunshine Beach will again be hard to beat in 2017 as we fielded both the successful Year 6 team and a Year 5 development team that played superbly all day against quality opposition". Sunshine Beach State School Health and Physical education teacher Cameron Porter was proud of the students and suggested that "in addition to the event being a great opportunity to showcase skills it is also an opportunity to meet peers from other schools. Participation in sport helps their social skills and develops a sense of achievement, self-worth and confidence". He added that "evidence also suggests a positive correlation between children’s participation in physical activity and academic achievement".

The Sunshine Beach State School Year 6 team are excited by their win. Year 6 student and team spokesperson, Mia, possibly best summarised participation in the netball carnival by saying "Awesome team, supportive coach, fantastic parents, great players and our unbelievable friendships".

Queens Hotel, Kandy.

View from the Kandy to Colombo train.

In the hill country Life of

brine PHIL JARRATT

SITTING in a tea plantation mess hall on a ridge above the high hill station of Ella, Sri Lanka, last week, sipping a weak green tea for which I had paid the equivalent of 10 bucks, or about 20 times its value in the village 100 metres or so below, I was reminded of the words of the travel writer Pico Iyer – this generation’s Paul Theroux – in his excellent essay, “Why We Travel”. He wrote: “We travel, initially, to lose ourselves; and we travel, next, to find ourselves. We travel to open our hearts and eyes and learn more about the world than our newspapers will accommodate. We travel to bring what little we can, in our ignorance and knowledge, to those parts of the globe whose riches are differently dispersed.” These are my go-to words when I find myself sitting in some far-flung joint on a gloomy, sticky, grey kind of day, wondering what the hell I was thinking when I put this one in the travel itinerary. Oh, that’s right: we’re here to lose ourselves, then find ourselves again. But my cynicism is only skin deep, and the Hill Country of Sri Lanka is, in fact, a place whose riches are differently dispersed, and perhaps just that little bit harder to discover in the damp mist of a building monsoon. So Ella was our first stop in the hills, the point where we picked up the train to wend

out west, eventually to Colombo, to finish our journey. It’s a bit like Byron in the ’70s, which is to say a bit rough around the edges but not without its charm. We found only one memorable restaurant, a place where the local food was as good if not better than anything we ate in all our Sri Lankan travels. The only problem with Matey’s Hut is that there are just three dodgy sawcut tables suspended in a tree-house, and the place is hugely popular with young people of the kind who try to bargain down the price of a third class train ticket. But when we did beat the crowd and got settled in a corner, the meal was sensational, the highlight being a mango curry. Matey and his family were delightful hosts, although when I pulled a chilled bottle of Chilean chardonnay out of my backpack and asked for an ice bucket, they gave me the who farted look. I promptly withdrew the bottle and we drank fresh lime with soda instead. Oh, and about the tea plantation tours, which are rife up here. Tea, sure. After I’ve already had three cups of coffee I’ll give it a go, but do I really need to don a face mask and booties to learn the mysteries of tea leaf production. Apparently they pick it, dry it, crush it and package it. Who knew? All of Ella was a construction site, including our humble hotel, where we had to clamber around the workmen’s ladder to get to our room, and where the hammering and drilling was ceaseless from dawn to dusk.

KIDS PLAY FREE SUNDAY AFTERNOONS.

But after a dramatically beautiful ridge-top train ride, we discovered that Nuwara Eliya, or “Little Britain”, was just the same. It seems that since the end of 30 years of civil war, Sri Lanka has awoken to its own tourism possibilities, and maybe just overcooked the goose a little, like so much of the Third World before them. We stayed in the Glendower Hotel at the cheap end of Grand Hotel Drive, the Brit-strip that runs along the edge of the golf course. In the late afternoon we checked on what we might have been missing, first at the Grand, a truly superb example of planter kitsch, and then at the exclusive Hill Club, where a man called Benedict, dressed in a maroon topcoat, first tried to throw me out, then tried to rent me a tux so I could get in for dinner. Another majestic train ride brings us to the royal seat of Kandy, a truly beautiful small city, built around the edges of a man-made lake. We checked into the city’s landmark Queens Hotel, on the edge of the lake and just a couple of hundred metres from the Temple of The Tooth, where the only known relic of the Buddha resides. Our first morning in Kandy we strolled around the lake before breakfast, finishing the walk at the British Garrison Cemetery, just up a steep hill from the cultural centre. It was still early and the gate was locked, but soon enough Assistant Caretaker Harsha Kumara Herath came running up the hill to let us in. He was a smart, talkative young man who explained the colonial gravesites to us while breaking away to whippersnip the weeds.

Author with the Assistant Caretaker of the British Garrison Cemetery. After standing on the grave of John Spottiswood Robertson, the last European to be trampled to death by a wild elephant in Ceylon, and telling us the history, Harsha invited us to view the cemetery museum. Inside the small room he pointed to a photo of HRH Prince Charles at the cemetery, with him in the foreground. “I shook the hand of Prince Charles,” he said proudly. “But he has very big ears.” I shook the hand of the man who had shaken the hand of the Prince of Wales, explained about the degrees of separation, exchanged emails and promised to keep in touch. There is much to love about the people and culture of Sri Lanka, and for me the Assistant Caretaker of the British Garrison Cemetery summarised it all.

Bigger and better for tri Between the

flags RON LANE

IT JUST does not seem possible, but every year the Noosa Tri, Noosa's event of the year, just gets bigger and better. One set of figures being banded around seem right on; 1300 volunteers, 6000 entrants in the Tri and a total of 13,000 entrants recorded for all events on the program. Well done to all concerned. However, as always a major work load fell on the shoulders of the volunteers and again as always they did a magnificent job; our local volunteers working for the Tri and lifesavers from the Noosa, Sunshine, Coolum and Mudjimba clubs working the water safety. Water safety co-ordinator Joe Cirillo of Noosa club said, “All clubs were well represented and during swim events all courses were well covered. The weather was kind to us and this made our job easier. Considering this was the biggest Tri ever things went extremely well.” Leading the team from Sunshine Beach, club captain Scott Summers agreed. “Everything was well organised and when you consider the numbers entered for the swims, it couldn’t have been better,” he said. Once again many thanks to all volunteers; without you it just would not happen. At the recent Coolangatta

Gold marathon event, Bailey Williams of the Noosa club finished 3rd in the Undedr 19 division. This effort was well applauded by his clubmates and rightly so for this event is not for the faint-hearted. Since then many people have asked what exactly is involved and what is the distance of the various disciplines? The race consists of four disciplines; ski paddle, run, swim and board race. The ski course covers 15km followed by a 2.1km run, 2.5 swim, 6.1 board race and another 7.1km run. On this, Bailey's first attempt at the Gold, he finished in a time of 3hrs 17min, which saw him finish in third place. Bailey, whose happy-go-lucky nature hides a deep determination said: “It was tough, at the end I really had nothing left. At the end of the ski leg I was in seventh place, entered the swim in eighth and finished the swim in second. It was the swim section that really lifted me, enabling me to finish the final leg in third place. At the final stage I knew the guys behind me were slowly running me down but I was detirmmed to hang on and that is what I did. No more endurance for me now it’s the short course stuff the Nutri Grain Series. I want to get the points required to take me into the Nutri Grain Series, and I will be happy.” Two of Bailey's clubmates younger brother Cooper, 16, and Lana Rogers, 23, have also made their mark, this time in the Iron Man event. In Round 1 of the Summer

of Surf Series both did well and along with clubmates Rhys Burrows and Jordan Mercer, qualified for the iron man in Round 2 the of the Summer of Surf to be held this weekend. One of the rewards they received for their performance was to be presented with new swim togs with their family name stencilled across the bottom. “Bit embarrassing,” laughed young Cooper, “but it was great.” Despite being what the clubbies term the Short Course events, to reach the top in the Iron Man is also extremely tough. Lana, who qualified in the ladies for Round 2, summed it up beautifully when she said, “It is hard and very, very intense; you have to be very dedicated.” So what again, I have been asked is the training routine that will enable them to achieve their goals? The program covers six days a week with a two hour session per day, and covers all disciplines; swimming, board, ski and running. They swim every day covering 6km; Monday ski paddle 1.5 hours solid, Tuesday/ Thursday 1.5 hours board racing, Wednesday/Saturday full iron person racing, all disciplines (board, swim ski, run.) After training Cooper works part time cooking at Pizza Capers in Peregian Springs and Lana works as a learn to swim instructor at the Good Shepherd College. It is easy to understand why the chosen few who reach the top become Legends of the Surf.

Noosa Pirates in good hands A good shake makes it By Dave Gleeson

By Ron Lane IT HAS often been said that a good, productive and wellattended annual general meeting, gives members a true indication of what lies ahead for the forthcoming season. This being the case, then the Noosa Pirates Rugby League Club, which held its AGM recently, can definitely look forward to a successful and rewarding season. Following his opening address and words of welcome, retiring president Terry Bullen, sincerely thanked all members of his management team, players, coaches, office bearers, supporters and sponsors - for what has been, at times a very difficult year. He also acknowledged the Junior Pirates on yet another successful season and wished them well in the years ahead. One of the highlights of his address was in reference to their major sponsor - the Tewantin-Noosa RSL Club. “These people have been with Pirates for many years and I wish to thank them for their continued support. Their loyalty has been secnoosatoday.com.au

On taking the chair, he immediately acknowledged his predecessor and thanked him for his contribution to the club. Having started his career in the Pirates’ junior ranks, Greg brings with him many years of experience. Add to this the presence of other highly-experienced family members on the committee, and there’s not only vast experience, but

club pride in abundance. These appointments are definitely pointing in a positive direction. In his remarks to the members, Greg expressed his hope that more people will put their hand up for positions. “This will spread the workload and not just leave it to a small group - this will make us a stronger and happy club,” he said. Regarding other key positions the following were elected to office; vice president Ben Christensen, treasurer Gary Christensen, secretary Lexie Mawn and registrar Sue Arnold. During general business

some of the highlights discussed were; advertising of the coaching positions, the annual January fundraising Noosa Pirates Rodeo and the International Legends of League Festivities, which are set down for February. The Legends of League will be several days of functions to not only give people the opportunity to meet the great, but also celebrate what it means to be a member of the Noosa Pirates Rugby League Club. Regarding attendance, seated among the members were ten Life Members and the club’s original coach. This is a good indication that pride and tradition is alive and well within the club. It speaks volumes for the future of this great club.

LAST weekend was a busy one in Noosa - along with dozens of Sunshine Beach SLSC cadets volunteering as water safety patrol for the Noosa Triathlon, it was the annual Surf Lifesaving 'Tin Shake’. Every year clubs from all around the country ask for donations from the public in order to raise additional funds to help purchase much-needed equipment and train future volunteer lifesavers. As part of this initiative, Sunshine Beach’s junior club members (Nippers) hit the local shopping centres at Sunshine Beach and Noosa Junction asking for assistance from the public. A total of more than $2500 was raised for Sunshine Beach SLSC by the Nippers from generous locals who couldn’t resist putting a few coins or notes into the tins which were capably rattled by a large number of Sunshine Beach Surf Lifesaving club volunteers over a two-day period. A big thanks to all club members who volunteered a few hours of their time - this community spirit is what keeps clubs like Sunshine Beach SLSC viable with all lifesaving patrols also being done on a volunteer basis by cadets and active members Sunshine Beach is also accepting donations from any other interested locals or businesses, so
