LIGHT UP GEELONG Geelong’s Floating Christmas Tree will return on Friday 11 November when the City of Greater Geelong hosts Light Up Geelong, our biggest night of Christmas celebrations. Light Up Geelong will feature an impressive line-up of entertainment from 7.30pm, followed by the lighting of Geelong’s Floating Christmas Tree, a short fireworks show, and projections on City Hall. Talented Geelong artists Sophia Katos and Imogen Brough will headline Light Up Geelong, performing popular Christmas carols from 8.30pm before the Christmas tree lights up at 9.00pm. Artists performing at Light Up Geelong include the Rachel Brennan Duo, Uptown Brown and Steve Thew.

Kids will love the face painting, balloon artist, stilt walkers and of course Santa.

Geelong’s Floating Christmas Tree will light up daily from 8.30pm to midnight.

Get into Central Geelong early to enjoy shopping and dinner before the festive entertainment begins.

The light shows will run for approximately six minutes with a nine minute break.

Watching Geelong’s Floating Christmas Tree light up in November has become a tradition for many local families. Now in it’s third year there will be new music and lighting shows to look forward as the crowd counts down for the Christmas tree reveal.

Geelong’s Floating Christmas Tree will be in place for Orthodox Christmas, with disassembly on 7 January. Light Up Geelong is proudly delivered by the City of Greater Geelong with support from GeelongPort.

Bethany will also be collecting gifts for their Bay 93.9 Giving Tree Appeal at Light Up Geelong. Geelong’s Floating Christmas tree this year includes an interactive element for the first time, giving people control of the floating Christmas tree’s lights, between 3 and 25 December.

LOCALS BRING TREE TO LIFE A number of Geelong companies played a role in bringing the 2016 Geelong Floating Christmas Tree to life. GeelongPort, Hanlon Industries, Elstone Diving Services Pty Ltd and Total Events all had a hand in the tree’s storage, build, transport and lighting. City of Greater Geelong General Manager of Investment and Attraction Brett Luxford said the GeelongPort provided a professional logistics plan for the storage of the Christmas tree. “The City is thankful for the support GeelongPort provides in storage, security and access,” Mr Luxford said.

“Hanlon Industries provide an outstanding service managing the build of Geelong’s Floating Christmas tree ensuring the assembly runs smoothly. “Hanlon Industries took on the task when the Christmas tree was first introduced and we look forward to working with the team again. Mr Luxford said Elstone Diving Services Pty Ltd assisted the City in the supply, hire and transport of the Christmas tree. “Elstone’s perform the crucial task of tugging Geelong’s Floating Christmas Tree from GeelongPort to Corio Bay,” Mr Luxford said the spectacular lighting and music shows have been created by Total Events.

“We utilised the GeelongPort services at Corio Quay and Lascelles Wharf and appreciate the ongoing assistance.

“The 2016 Christmas tree features new lighting sequences and patterns as well as three diferent music shows,” Mr Luxford said.

Another Geelong company Hanlon Industries worked closely with the City to assemble the Christmas tree.

“Total Events also created an interactive element which will allow the public to take control of the lights operational from 3 December until 25 December.”

Geelong’s Christmas program features a giant star. The Christmas star is an added feature in Central Geelong’s Catenary lighting located corner of Moorabool and Malop Streets. The Catenary star colours will change according to the Christmas lighting sequence from dusk each night until 7 January 2016. This new element will become part of Geelong’s annual Christmas program brought to you by the City. Watch it light up for the first time during the twilight Gala Parade on 12 November from 7.30pm.

MYER CHRISTMAS WINDOWS Children – young and old – will be delighted by the Myer Geelong Christmas Windows to be revealed on Saturday 12 November at 3.30pm in Malop Street. This year’s windows feature the popular children’s Christmas story ‘Santa Claus and the Three Bears by Mario Modugno and illustrated by Jane and Brooke Dyer. The Geelong windows are a retrospective of the 2014 Myer Melbourne windows and will be revealed as part of the Gala Celebrations in Malop Street. With Santa and three gorgeous polar bears as the main characters, the windows will be on display until Christmas Day and are a key point on the Central Geelong Christmas Trail.

ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE 6.00pm-10.00pm Bay FM live broadcast (adjacent to The Carousel). 7.30pm Face painting, Santa, and roving entertainment along Geelong’s Waterfront.

Talented Geelong performers Imogen Brough and Sophia Katos will each perform some of their favourite Christmas carols at Light Up Geelong on Friday 11 November. Imogen said she is looking forward to being part of Geelong’s Christmas celebration. “I am really looking forward to performing at Light Up Geelong,” said Ms Brough. “It is always an honour to represent and support the Geelong community, especially with my singing!” Sophia said Christmas is her favourite time of year spent with family in Geelong. “Singing Christmas carols on the waterfront in my hometown, it doesn’t get much better than that in my book,” said Ms Katos. “Geelong shines as a city. I think Geelong’s Floating Christmas Tree is a symbol of that. We’re a small city but we shine bright and pack a punch.” Catch Imogen and Sophia from 8.30pm Friday 11 November.

8.30pm Christmas carols on main stage by Imogen Brough and Sophia Katos. 8.50pm Santa makes announcement of colouring competition winner. 9.00pm Geelong’s Floating Christmas Tree lights up and short fireworks show. 9.45pm Christmas projections on City Hall.

Award-winning Australian projection artists The Electric Canvas are behind this year’s Christmas projections which will beam onto City Hall on Friday 11 November. The Electric Canvas produced projections for White Night Melbourne, Sovereign Hill’s Christmas in July: Winter Wonderlights in Ballarat, and Vivid Sydney. City of Greater Geelong General Manager of Investment & Attraction, Brett Luxford, said the Geelong Christmas projections will have a story line based around a family preparing for Christmas. “Nothing beats the excitement of a visit from Santa plus a summer holiday. That is what our Christmas projections will show and people are going to love it,” Mr Luxford said. “The story follows a family decorating a Christmas tree, walking through the neighbourhood to see Christmas lights and then opening presents before hitting the road to go on a summer holiday adventure.” “The cartoon format will be a hit with children, and we are sure it will engage people of all ages. It’s definitely worth a trip into Central Geelong to see City Hall transformed into another animated projection canvas.”

CITY HALL PROJECTIONS

Peter Milne, Managing Director of The Electric Canvas, comments, “We are honoured and excited to be designing this year’s Christmas projections onto Geelong City Hall. This is the first time we’re presenting our work in Geelong and we hope that the public will enjoy the show as much as we’ve enjoyed creating it.” Christmas projections on City Hall will operate from 8.30pm to midnight in November and 9.00pm to midnight in December to January. The projection sequence will run for approximately eight minutes on a constant loop.

‘More blankets’ solution to 25% price hike

Power shock for local pensioners By Luke Voogt Geelong pensioners will bear the brunt of electricity price rises when one Victoria’s largest power plants closes next year, according to senior citizens branches. Australian consulting firm Frontier Economics forecast a 25 per cent price increase after Hazelwood closes in March.

Pensioners living week-to-week would be among the hardest hit, said local senior citizen club presidents. Norlane president Jennifer KirbyForte said about 90 per cent of her members would struggle. “Any closure of any place that produces power is going to be bad for people on a limited income,” she said. Many elderly residents already had big power bills because they spent a

large amount of time at home, Ms Kirby-Forte said. “For those people life will become more difficult.” Whittington branch president Graeme Stephen’s said his latest bill was particularly high thanks to “a cold, rotten winter”. “We have a lot of people who just pile on the blankets and deal with the cold because they can’t afford it,” he said.

“They live from day to day and 25 per cent is not peanuts.” Mr Stephens said the price rises could vary based on postcode. “I’m not sure if they’ll actually go up here. We’ll have to see what eventuates.” Energy company ENGIE, which owns the plant, announced it would close in March 2017 after becoming economically unviable. Continued page 5

In Brief Light control Spectators will control the lights on Geelong’s Christmas tree with touch-pads at the waterfront’s nearby Carousel, City Hall has announced. The “interactive element” would be available from 3 December after City Hall lit up the tree again next Friday night, said investment and attraction general manager Brett Luxford.

Heart app An app partly developed in Geelong lets medical students manipulate three-dimensional hearts on their phones, Deakin University has announced. The students performed and interpreted electrocardiograms with the technology for a “far-deeper understanding” of how the procedure correlated with heart function, said Deakin Medical School’s Dr Karen D’Souza.

‘Thief’ snapped A security camera has captured an image of a man wanted for questioning over the theft of a car and contents inside at Torquay on 19 October, according to police. Investigators released the image this week, appealing for anyone with information about the alleged suspect (pictured) to contact Torquay Police Station or Crime Stoppers. CONSEQUENCES: Fiona Reidy wants young drivers to reflect on their actions after she lost her son in a car accident. 132625

Son's death prompts call for Safer People on road By Luke Voogt Every day Fiona Reidy thinks of son Rory who died in a crash days before his 17th birthday. “It’s an event that completely turned our lives upside down,” she told the Indy this week, close to five years since the tragedy. Dr Reidy went from planning Rory’s birthday on New Year’s Eve to arranging his funeral, after a friend invited him out on a late-night ride. The 17-year-old friend had taken a car without his parents’ permission. “Rory was the least likely person to be in that position, but he was,” Dr Reidy said. “Something happens when young people get in groups.” The driver was travelling over 200km/h on Swan Bay Road when he hit gravel, lost control and smashed into a tree.

With young people over-represented in Victoria’s road toll, Dr Reidy stressed that death was just one consequence of reckless driving. Young people could end up disabled for life or responsible for a friend’s death, she said. “It’s really like a stone in a pond. It ripples on and on.” Time in youth detention for culpable driving was probably the least of the consequences for the driver, Dr Reidy said. “I can’t imagine what it would’ve been like to turn around and see a friend lifeless.” “To have that memory for the rest of your life is a high price to pay for a spontaneous decision.” Dr Reidy urged young drivers to think of impact their death would have on their families and friends “They’ve just got to take a breadth and think before they act.”

Safer Drivers is one of the four pillars of the Safe System underpinning the TAC’s Towards Zero vision. The Safer Drivers pillar is particularly relevant to younger motorists, with drivers aged to 25 comprising a quarter of Victorian road deaths despite holding 14 per cent of licences. TAC spokesperson Hamish Heard encouraged parents to discuss strategies for avoiding risky situations, especially with the end of school in sight. “If your kids are going away it’s great if parents can lend them the safest car in the family,” he said. “The safety features can be the difference between a fatal and a near miss.” The Indy is promoting the TAC's four road safety pillars with a series of stories that in the previous two weeks covered Safer Vehicles and Safer Roads. Next week's edition will promote the remaining pillar, Safer Speeds.

Rabbit attack A new virus to control rabbits is under trail at numerous sites across the Geelong region, a federal MP has announced. Residents had helped identify sites for the trail of RHDV1 K5 as rabbit populations resumed rising after the last mass-eradication attempt in 1995, said Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson.

Super event Avalon Raceway will host the only Victorian round of the Australian Supercross Championship on Saturday, the event’s promoter has announced. The Avalon round would feature a “worldclass track” for competitors including some of Australia’s and America’s best supercross riders, Rusty Bell said.

Star light City Hall has spent $55,000 on a catenary star over the intersection of Moorabool and Malop streets. The aluminium star would “light up” on 12 November as an annual twilight Gala Day parade passed underneath, City Hall said.

North Geelong’s Natalie Ceccucci will trek 60km in one day this month to help end avoidable blindness in developing nations. The 47-year-old intensive care nurse will join three long-time friends in the St Vincent’s Wild Women team for the challenging, all-terrain Coastrek. “We love spending time together,” Natalie said. “All of us wanted to have a challenge and improve our fitness – and it’s for a good cause.” The group has so far raised about $2500 for the Fred Hollows Foundation. Natalie volunteered in Papua New Guinea in 2001 for Operation Open Heart, assisting with cardiac surgery on locals. “We’re very lucky compared to other countries,” she said. She said that the Hollows foundation’s work

was vital for “people who don’t have the access to good health care like we do.” “Some of the procedures are really simple but they’re life-changing,” Natalie said. Ocean Grove’s Kate Hughes will also take on the trek, walking 30km with the Bellarine Belles. She recently saw the foundation’s work firsthand with husband Daniel and son William at Nepal’s Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology. “I didn’t know what to expect and was completely blown away,” she told the Ocean Grove Voice recently. “We only spent an hour there but we could have spent all day. The doctors see 700 to 1000 patients a day and some walk for days to get there – it was incredible.” Kate and Natalie will join more than 500 teams at this year’s Melbourne Coastrek. Organisers of the 18 November event hope to raise $1.2 million for the Hollows foundation.

Geelong ambulance response times for lifethreatening emergencies have improved almost half a minute in the past 12 months, according to the State Government. The improved response times defied “record demand“ for ambulances around Victoria, said Geelong MP Christine Couzens. “Geelong patients experiencing life-threatening conditions can have every confidence they will receive faster responses from paramedics today than they did under the crisis-ridden Liberals,” Ms Couzens said. Ambulances responded to Code One (lights and sirens) emergencies in an average 12.44 minutes in the September quarter, compared to 13.10 the Christine Couzens same time last year. Labor attacked the previous Coalition government’s record on ambulances, highlighting that in the last quarter of its final term Geelong ambulances attended 65.81 per cent of calls in the benchmark 15 minutes with an average response time of 14.40 minutes. But opposition MP Simon Ramsay pointed out that local Code Ones were down 517 in the September quarter compared to last year’s 3815. “Christine Couzens refers to growing demand and record demand but today’s figures show a substantial decrease in the number of people getting a Code One response when they ring for an ambulance in greater Geelong,” the Member for Western Victoria said. Mr Ramsay accused the Andrews Government of failing to deliver major improvements to ambulance times in the past two years. “What Daniel Andrews won’t tell you is that ambulance response times are actually worse in 30 LGAs across the state, leaving many regional Victorians waiting longer for ambulances.”

Call to speed up fast rail By Luke Voogt An opposition MP has called on the State Government to provide a strategic works plan for a proposed 35-minute fast rail link between Geelong and Melbourne. Simon Ramsay urged Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan to investigate a recent Rail Futures Institute report detailing a 200km/h service. “All V/Line customers want is WiFi on the train, where they can do their business, and a 35-minute trip from Geelong to Melbourne in a sitting position,” the Western Victoria MP said.

“Commuters are still unhappy with the slow and outdated service, which takes no less than 56 minutes on a good day to Melbourne, even with the introduction of the regional rail link.” But Ms Allan said Mr Ramsay needed to read the report properly. She pointed out the 35-minute service between Melbourne and Geelong was part of phase two, scheduled for completion in 2040. “It’s astounding that Simon Ramsey would call on us to develop a works plan without any investigation of the report or detailed planning.” The institute premised the report on a “huge

amount of investment“ in a new rail tunnel or tracks from Southern Cross Station through Melbourne’s west to enable the high-speed service, she said. “Now they (the opposition) have latched on to a report they haven’t read properly and (called for a) works plan for a project that hasn’t been investigated which the report says isn’t needed until 2040. “People in Geelong don’t need Mr Ramsay’s sporadic interest in public transport - they need new trains, more services and a properly planned rail system they can rely on.“

Charity helps with brave boy’s long journey to health By Luke Voogt The operator of Geelong’s oil refinery is on track to raise $120,000 for a charity which helps children with life-threatening conditions. Some of Viva Energy’s money for Very Special Kids will help Lara’s Harry Booth and his family with his treatment for renal failure. Harry, who is turning four this month, and mum Eileen returned home from Melbourne on Thursday morning exhausted after his latest 10day stint in hospital. “We had someone (from Very Special Kids) come in pretty much every day which was great,” Eileen said. “They’re the best, they come in and they’ve got toys. He loves it.” Harry has been on dialysis since he was six months old. “I don’t think he would remember not being on it,” Eileen said. “It’s been a rough ride.” The family will stay at the charity’s temporary accommodation for Harry’s surgery when they finally find a matching donated kidney. “It’s good to know we’ve got somewhere to stay as a family so we don’t have to burn a hole in the highway driving up and back again,” Eileen said.

Woman ‘attacks man with bottle’ By Luke Voogt Police have arrested a 41-year-old woman after an alleged bottle attack in the Geelong's Lt Malop St mall. Officers swooped on the woman in Corio St shortly after the incident, about 3.15pm on Wednesday. Geelong Sergeant Ron Gray said the woman reportedly threw a bottle at the man. Witnesses later reported her brandishing a knife and screaming wildly at a man as she followed him north then south on Moorabool St. It was unknown if the man and the woman were known to each other. Police were trying to track down the alleged victim for his version of events shortly after arresting the woman. The mall was a known trouble spot for police in Geelong, Sgt Gray said. Sgt Gray encouraged witnesses or anyone with information about Wednesday's incident to phone Geelong Police Station on 5225 3100 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

From page 1 Frontier Economics’ study indicated a subsequent 25 per cent increase and smaller ongoing annual hikes. But State Government-commissioned modelling indicated lower increases of 4 to 8 per cent. World Wildlife Foundation Australia listed Hazelwood power station as the least carbon-efficient in the OECD and one of the most polluting in the world. Environment Victoria hailed the decision as a landmark moment for Australia’s transition away from fossil-fuel power, saying it would make room for billions of dollars of “clean” energy.

A silver-haired man has tried to abduct a 12-yearold girl after kissing her at Corio, according to Victoria Police. He pounced as the girl walked her dog easterly on Purnell Rd about 1.30pm Monday, police alleged. Geelong Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives appealed for witnesses after releasing a computer-generated image of the suspect. Police said the girl told investigators she first noticed the man walking toward her near the intersection of Cheshire Street. “The victim moved out of the man’s way. However, he stopped next to her and patted her dog before placing his hand on her shoulder and kissing her on the cheek. “While still holding onto the victim the man tried to make her walk with him, saying, ‘Come with me’. “The victim struggled free from her assailant and ran to a nearby school where she sought assistance from a staff member.” Police said the man was perceived to be aged between 50 and 70 years old, with tanned skin,

‘Knackered’ punter wakes up to win A Geelong West man who was too “knackered” to stay up for Monday night’s lottery draw woke up the next morning to discover he won $1 million. “I haven’t told anyone yet!” the winning man told Tatts. “These days I hate waiting up late to check the results and I was knackered yesterday, so I went to bed at about 9pm, none-the-wiser I’d won. “But I had the ticket sitting in front of my com-

puter screen and I turned it on and checked it against the winning numbers early this morning and I thought, ‘No, no! It can’t be!’ “I’m on the verge of getting my dream house built, but I was worried about getting myself into more debt. Now I can buy the house and a shed and be care-free!” Tatts said the man bought his ticket from Woolworths Petrol, on Shannon Avenue, Geelong West.

Double Take State Government MPs led the latest talkfest on “the region’s top priorities” at a swanky venue overlooking Torquay’s Fisherman’s Beach this week. The event was the state’s first “Regional Assembly”, a series of which is planned for various locations around Victoria. The assembly, according to the Government, was an opportunity to “flesh out ideas about what the region needs most” - and all from one of the most desirable positions in one of the region’s least-needy localities, of course! Lest sceptics suggest the event was just another well-catered yakathon in a resort for the well-heeled, co-opted Geelong Chamber of Commerce boss Kylie Warne (pictured) provided a reassuring explanation. “The Regional Assembly continues the process of reaffirming priorities for the Barwon region to inform government and deliver clear social, economic and environmental outcomes for the area.” Well, that’s a relief - we’d never get anywhere without continuing the process of reaffirming priorities. So what were the priorities for Geelong - and affluent Torquay - discussed at the assembly? More jobs? Extra police? Better roads? According to the Government’s pre-assembly online poll, the big issues were “enabling young people”, “ensuring a fair, safe and healthy community” and “transforming” for the future. Sounds like the poll respondents would have been right at home continuing processes of reaffirming priorities at the assembly!

Healthy dose of music for the mind “She sang along with us and knew every word, despite it being her second language,” Ross said. The elderly harmony group featured noteworthy singers like 90-year-old Reg O’Neil and former Victorian MP Rod Mackenzie. “But we don’t hold that against him,” Ross said. The young-at-heart Reg performed in Tasmanian theatre and locally in a career spanning 66 years. “It’s wonderful watching the reaction of the people we’re singing to and seeing them come alive,” he said. But Ross insisted the men sang mainly for the love of music. “We’re just a group of blokes who are past the mainstream music,” he said. “When we’re on song we’re loud enough that the deaf can hear us,” added fellow member Max Abery. A number of studies have identified music as a method of combating Alzheimer’s. ABC’s Catalyst aired an episode exploring the method earlier this year.

The spritely Belmont Rhythmic Singers have toured the city and its surrounds bringing the elderly “back to life,” said group co-ordinator Ross Robinson. The spritely Belmont Rhythmic Singers have toured the city and its surrounds bringing the elderly “back to life,” said group co-ordinator Ross Robinson. “As soon as we sing these old ever-green songs they start to remember. They’ll be up doing a foxtrot with their walkers.” Ross described the reaction of a woman in a Whittington nursing home who had had dementia for four years and spoke little English.

Residents will help guide the battle against rising crime in a series of local forums this month, police have announced. The iniative follows Indy reports of a 20 per cent crime surge in 12 months and 37 per cent increases in theft and burglary in September. Geelong Police Superintendent Craig Gillard said open forums were a great opportunity for residents and business owners to raise their concerns. “We look forward to hearing from our local communities as we really value what they have to say. “We’re always looking at ways to strengthen relationships and further our engagement with the community.” Local Area Commanders would chair the meetings where specialist police would address concerns specific to their expertise, Supt Gillard said. “Representatives from local organisations are also encouraged to attend as they form a vital part of our broader communities. “Through combining the efforts of the police and the people of Geelong, Bellarine and Surf Coast areas, we give ourselves the best chance of keeping our community safe.” Geelong Inspector Graham Banks chaired a forum in Barwon Heads recently and another at Corio on Wedensday night. “One of the key things for (the Barwon Heads community) was people breaking in while residents are home to steal cars,” Insp Banks said. The forums were an excellent source of intelligence for local areas, especially with yet-to-bereported crime, he said. “They give us a better idea of what the priorities are.” The forums also provided police a chance to

Art holds more than meets the eye A decade worth of mind-breaking art will be on display this summer in Geelong Gallery’s exhibition – Tricking the Eye. Gallery curator Lisa Sullivan put the “Geelong-only” exhibition together by searching the catalogues of contemporary Australian art for works of deception. “My interest is chiefly in the illusionistic aspects,” she said ahead of the exhibition, which starts 26 November. “The idea of something not being quite what we expect it to be.” The exhibition showcases 11 Australian artists whose paintings, sculptures, photographs and moving images play with perspective and warp reality. Tricking the eye – trompe l’oeil – draws on centuries of tradition of brain-bending illusions.

Ms Sullivan had noticed various modern artists who incorporate that rich history into their works. “Aspects of this genre have also transitioned (or been adopted) into ‘everyday’ scenarios such as restaurant and courtyard murals, chalk art and even advertising.” The exhibition features artists including Daniel Crooks, Tully Moore, Colleen Ahern, Gregory Hodge, Stephen Bowers, Chris Bond, John Neeson, Ricky Swallow, Jess Johnson, Anne Zahalka and Georgina Cue. Ms Sullivan drew inspiration for the collection from 2006 exhibition by Melbourne-based artist Jan Murray, whose work will also be on show in the exhibition. “This is an idea that has been sitting with me for a while but this is the first time I’ve had an opportunity to do it.”

October wet but fraction warmer UNDER THE WEATHER Lindsay Smail Despite the general consensus among chilly locals, October 2016 in Geelong was only fractionally colder than average for the month. Nights were 0.2C warmer than the 30-year average of 8.4C but the days were 0.6C cooler, leaving October with a mean temperature 0.2C above the monthly average. The result would come as a surprise to many residents who speculated that the weather was significantly colder than usual. However, their observations were understandable on the final day of the month when snow was reported at Beech Forest, in the Otways, after a strong cold front traversed the state. Back in Geelong, the month’s coldest night was 3.4C on 14 October, while the coolest day was on 22 October when the mercury rose to only 13.7C. The warmest night recorded 15.3C on 16 October, with the warmest day hitting 26.6C on 25 October. In contrast to the temperatures, the rain total was significantly different to the average.

Fifteen rain days for the month gave the official weather station at Breakwater a figure of 62mm for October and 68mm in urban Geelong compared to the 30-year mean of 52.3mm. After a sixth consecutive above-average rainfall month, Geelong now has an accumulated 570mm for 2016 with two months to go until the end of the year compared to the annual average of 520 mm. The October rain further boosted the region’s water storages, which were 85 per cent of capacity this week. The month also had nine very windy days with gusts above 60km/h. One severe wind storm damaged roofs and trees on 9 October when gusts reached 106km/h at Avalon, 95km/h at Queen’s Park and 90km/h at Breakwater. Hail squalls hit the region on 5, 10 and18 October, with minor flooding of the Barwon River on 23 October. *Lindsay Smail operates Geelong Weather Services.

Man faces charges over fatal hit-run A 45-year-old woman has died in Corio after an alleged overnight hit and run. Police said a dark sedan was travelling south along the Princes Highway about 10pm on Monday, when it struck the woman. The driver, a 23-year-old man, allegedly drove away leaving the woman to die at the scene, police said. Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives later identified the driver. They charged him with failure to stop at the scene of a collision and

failure to render assistance. The Truganina man was bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday. Police said the woman was at a nearby roadside diner with a shirtless man prior to the collision. They urged the yet-to-be-identified shirtless man to contact them. Police urged anyone who saw the crash or the pair beforehand to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

Letters Labor sexualising children Everyone agrees bullying has no place in schools but the Andrews Government’s Safe Schools program has obvious ulterior motives. Outspoken Marxist Roz Ward founded and designed the program in a vacuum that assumes bullying does not extend beyond LGBTI youth. Safe Schools gives little credence to other children who face bullying, including those singled out for their ethnicity, body image, socio-economic status or disability. Safe Schools goes far beyond teaching children to treat others as they want to be treated. Instead, it has a clear sexual agenda that makes parents and teachers extremely uncomfortable. The Andrews Government’s social engineering in schools is now extending to the new Respectful Relationships curriculum, which has somehow evolved into a radical gender studies course that could be found in universities. As early as Grade 1, six and seven-year-olds will learn about mature concepts including genderbased violence and gender norms. It is bizarre the Andrews Government thinks terms such as transphobia, homophobic bullying, gender nonconforming, and heteronormativity need to become part of the curriculum for six-yearolds. Schools should not attempt to shape the beliefs and identities of young students. The system should be designed to shape their learning habits, build their knowledge and foster their ability to become leaders in whatever field they choose. A Liberal-National government would remove Daniel Andrews’ and Roz Ward’s politicised program and replace it with an initiative that sends a strong message of mutual respect and anti-bullying. Under a different mindset, the Coalition Government has also enacted legislation that allows extremely wealthy migrants to settle here. The source of their wealth is not investigated, so for all we know they could be from mafia organisations. We only discriminate against those without money to buy plane tickets. The government’s justification for excluding boat arrivals and holding genuine refugees indefinitely on Nauru is that Australia must keep strong border security and prevent deaths at sea. However, John Howard quietly removed refugees from Nauru without a resurgence of boat arrivals. It is ironic the government has allowed Australian land to be sold to undemocratic, repressive countries and to corporations under such regimes’ influence while, under the guise of border security, our government confines harmless refugees in expensive, hot, hellholes like Nauru. A real potential threat to Australian sovereignty is a slow take-over by repressive governments that kill or imprison their own minority groups. On behalf of the Leukaemia Foundation and Victorian families affected by blood cancer, I would like to thank the local team behind Geelong’s amazing Light the Night event held on 7 October. Light the Night is the Leukaemia Foundation’s annual fund-raising walk and the money raised gives families the emotional and practical support they need and funds research to help more Australians beat blood cancer. In 2016, 142 walks were organised across Australia and more Australians than ever were involved. Geelong’s event raised vital funds for the foundation thanks to the hard work and enthusiasm of community supporters who volunteered their time and efforts to make the night shine. I thank participants for carrying lanterns and giving generously to the cause. Their support makes the Leukaemia Foundation’s crucial work possible. Anyone who was unable to attend can still support the cause by donating so it can help fund research and assist families affected by blood cancer. Every day another 35 people are diagnosed with blood cancer. Although research is improving the survival rate, sadly one Australian loses their life to blood cancer every two hours. Geelong’s Light the Night continues accepting donations at lightthenight.org.au <http://lightthenight.org.au/> and from calls to 1800 500 088. Without ongoing government funding, the foundation truly appreciates any support that allows it to continue its important work. Meaghan Bush Leukaemia Foundation Victoria acting general manager

FINALLY FRIDAY

Classics hits are on song

‘Phantom’ singer back in Geelong

Musical theatre cult-classics will get the GSODA treatment in a new variety showcase about to hit the Geelong stage. About 60 of the region’s most talented young performers will pay homage to their favourite musical moments in This is Our Story, said GSODA’s Jenny Cogan. Newtown’s Giulia Monea will join the cast after two years with the theatre company. “I get to try being a different person,” she said. “I like that I can showcase my talent but not have the responsibilities of it being a job.” The 14-year-old will play Crystal in the Little Shop of Horrors – the story of a flesh-eating plant bent on world-domination. The comedy is just one of 30 musical numbers in the jam-packed show – a perfect fit for Giulia, who studies singing outside of school. “It’s lots of fun,” she said. Audiences will “travel” to skid row, the Sahara Desert, Miami dance floors and high school hallways through a collection of songs celebrating modern musical theatre. The showcase will feature numbers from Shrek and Disney’s Aladdin, along with hits like Dolly Parton’s Nine to Five and Gloria Estefan’s On Your Feet. The young cast will also perform songs from rarely-seen adaptations of films like Bring it On and School of Rock. Giulia was thrilled to relive childhood classics like Shrek. But her favourite part of the show was a song by the group’s eldest actresses. “It’s quite beautiful and it’s got so many harmonies,” she said. The actresses – who are leaving this year due to their age – will perform the song as a tribute to their time in the company, Giulia said. “They’re really good role models.” Hannah Petrie-Allbutt, a former GSODA ac-

Theatre veteran Donald Cant – one of Australia’s best known Phantoms of the Opera – will make his “overdue return to Geelong” next week. The Melbourne-based Baritone last performed in the city during a reopening of Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) a few years ago, he said. “It’s good that they welcomed me back." Cant will retrace his theatre career in his new concert My Journey, My Song through his repertoire of classic theatre songs. “I’m going to do some things I haven’t done for a long time,” he said. Cant played the Phantom more than 500 times, from 1990 to 1997, in Victoria’s longest running OPERA VETERAN: Donald Cant will show of all time. He played beside the return to Geelong likes of renowned Austra- next week. lian actors Marina Prior and Anthony Warlow in the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic. “In terms of total performance, I probably did more than 1000,” he said. Cant will celebrate that stretch of his career with songs made famous by the play, like Music of the Night. “I’d be hung, drawn and quartered if I didn’t,” he said. Canadian expat Cant followed in his father’s footsteps as a singer and actor in his home city of Vancouver. He migrated in 1984 and worked as a bartender at Collingwood Football Club, before earning his way back to full time theatre. Gant will perform at the GPAC on 9 and 10 November. For more information or to book phone GPAC on 5225 1200 or visit www.gpac.org.au to book.

SHOP OF HORRORS: Giulia Monea, right, will join Evette Jamal, Ruby Buchanon and Georgia Potter in This is Our Story. tress, will return to make her directorial debut with the company. Petrie-Allbutt will join vocal director Rebecca Newman and a team of choreographers for the show.

This is Our Story will play for four shows at Geelong Performing Arts Centre’s Drama Theatre from 10-12 November. Tickets available at www.gpac.org.au

STRESS LESS: Bonsai enthusiast Paul Buttigieg with a favourite juniper

Bonsai care cuts down the stress By Luke Voogt The city’s best-trimmed will be on display in Geelong Bonsai Club’s annual exhibition next weekend. Club president Paul Buttigieg will join 75 miniature-tree enthusiasts – aged 15 to 90 – from Geelong, Bellarine and the Surf Coast putting their masterwork on display. “It’s a very friendly group,” he said. The 70-year-old Batesford salesman got hooked on the art of pruning in 2009 when his four children bought him a bonsai course for Father’s Day. “Apparently as they were growing up I said to them I’d like to do a bonsai course,” he said. It was there Paul acquired his first juniper, which he has lovingly tended since. “I can proudly say it is still alive and thriving,” he said. “Often people lose their first tree.” Paul’s collection has bloomed in the following years and provided him a welcome meditative escape. “Anytime I come home from work and I’ve had a really stressful day, I’ll go out after dinner and spend an hour looking after the trees,” he said. “When you’re working on one tree at a time, all you think about is that tree. You forget everything else – I almost go into a state of trance.”

“By the time I’ve finished all the stress is gone.” The art may have even lowered his age several years, along with never touching cigarettes, Paul said wryly. “No one believes me when I tell them I’m 70.” Despite his hundred or so plants, Paul said he was not the greenest thumb in the club, which had been going since 1986. “A few eat and breathe bonsai. For some people in the bonsai world, it’s an absolute obsession.” The idea that bonsais are difficult to maintain is a myth, Paul said. During two days the club will demonstrate methods of potting, training and styling bonsai, to show just how easy it is, he said. “We’re more than happy to help people start from scratch.” The show will include a number of bonsai and related equipment for sale, competitions and raffles. Geelong Bonsai Club Annual Exhibition starts 13 November at the Geelong Masonic Centre in Belmont. For information on show times and tickets, visit geelongbonsai.com. In a unique giveaway, the club is offering Indy readers the chance to win their very own miniature tree. The first five people to bring this article to show will get free bonsai complete with a training pot, Paul said.

Humble Boy leaves them in stitches Torquay Theatre Troupe will take on Charlotte Jones’ Hamlet-inspired modern play, Humble Boy, in a series of shows starting next week. Troupe president Fred Preston described the comedy about a dysfunctional family as sidesplittingly funny. “We crack up each time we deliver the lines in rehearsal,” he said. The play follows Jones’s hero Felix Humble, a Cambridge Fellow who has returned to his family home in countryside England after the death of his father. He finds his mother, having discarding his father’s beehives and belongings, contemplating marriage to her lover. The jittery Felix reunites his discarded girlfriend Rosie – the daughter of his mother’s lover – who has an enormous surprise for him. Felix desperately searches for a way of resolving the tension between Einstein’s theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. At the same time, the astrophysicist struggles to find scientific “theory of everything” for his own life.

DYSFUNCTIONAL: Lisa Berry (Rosie Pye), Barry Eeles (James Humble) and Michael Baker (Felix Humble) rehearse for Torquay Theatre Troupe’s production of Humble Boy Bees, spirits and physics combine as the depressed and stuttering modern-day Hamlet tries to heal the rifts in his family. Torquay Theatre Troupe will perform Humble Boy, directed by Gay Bell, starting 7 November.

Three-in-one act Eddie Daniels has spent a lifetime bringing Gene Pitney, Roy Orbison and The King back from the dead on stage. “You can’t fake experience,” he said ahead of his latest Geelong show. “You need it to do what I do.” Eddie and wife Suzie Lee performed up and down the east coast cruising in their motorhome – ‘The Bus That Rocks’ – for the last seven years. “We get good crowds everywhere we go – we just love it,” Eddie said. “We have fun and then we have some more fun.” Suzie plays keyboard at Eddie’s shows, while the couple’s friend Pete Mullen plays guitar. “His amazing stage presence captures his audience as soon as he walks on stage,” she said. The couple are living the grey-nomad dream – except they are far from retired, Eddie said. “I certainly don’t look 70 or act 70,” the “48-year-old” said. “If I had my life to do over, I would do exactly the same thing. And we don’t plan on quitting anytime soon.” While Elvis acts are commonplace, Eddie said he was Australia’s only Gene Pitney tribute. He was also the country’s first Roy Orbison impersonator in the 1980s. Eddie migrated to Australia in the early 1970s, and has worked as variety entertainer since. His three-octave singing range set him apart from other performers, he said. “Most singers are lucky if they’ve got one.” He tries to make his three hour show – League of Legends – as authentic as possible. “When you grow up with these people, they’re second nature to you,” he said. “It’s true authentic ’60s sound. Dental match-up rests on implant Dental implants are an effective way to replace missing teeth. When teeth are lost because of disease or an accident, dental implants may be a good option. People may want to choose dental implants if they hide their smile because they have missing teeth, wear dentures that are uncomfortable, are dissatisfied with their removable partial dentures or want to keep their other teeth intact. Many people choose implants to replace a

single tooth or several teeth, or to support a full set of dentures. Implants are posts that are surgically placed into the upper or lower jawbone and replace the root of one or more missing teeth. This may be a good option for those who are in good general health and whose jaw can support an implant. Book an appointment at Norlane Dental Surgery to discuss options by calling 1800 246 247 or for more information visit www.NorlaneDental.com.au.

Funeral savings From 1 January 2017, new rules will apply for the Centrelink Age Pension Assets test that will affect thousands of current pension holders. For people eligible for a part pension, the pension rate currently reduces by $1.50 per fortnight for every $1000 of assets owned over the full pension limit. From 1 January 2017, the pension will be reduced by $3 per fortnight for every $1000 of assets over the limit. One strategy to reduce your assets is to invest in a funeral bond or a fixed price funeral plan, which can both be organised by Kings Funerals with all funds invested with a friendly society. Currently, you can invest up to $12,500 in a funer-

al bond and this investment is not deemed to be part of your assets. With a fixed price funeral plan there is no limit on the amount you can invest. This ability to reduce your assets by investing in a funeral bond or a fixed price funeral plan is a benefit that is not available with funeral insurance products. Your accountant or financial advisor will be able to provide information about options that will best suit your individual needs. Call Julie Spriggs, pre-planning consultant at Kings Funerals on 5248 3444 to discuss funeral planning options.

Touch Up Guys can visit customers at home or the workplace for on-the-spot service and repairs.

Customers rely on the fine-tuned expertise of German Automotive to ensure they are prepared for any lengthy trip. General manager Ben Buckle said German Automotive always tries to improve its service to customers. The German Automotive team has the latest equipment and specialises in European brands, specifically Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, Audi, Skoda and Porsche. “We’re set up to dealer standard for these brands and take great pride in meeting the needs of our customers who have come to rely on us over the years,” Ben said. “We’ve invested heavily in both training and state-of-the-art equipment and two of our staff recently returned from training overseas. “This allows us to work on current models with no effect on manufacturer’s warranty at all.” The team at German Automotive uses genuine parts sourced from European suppliers and seeks customer authorisation before proceeding with any major repairs. Road worthy inspections are available and customers can benefit from the use of courtesy vehicles and a drop off/pick up service around Geelong. The workshop is equipped with dealer-standard diagnostic equipment to quickly track down any vehicle problems. German Automotive is at 8 Autumn Street, Geelong West.

LIKE the Queensland State of Origin rugby league team, the Mazda3 has continued to feed off a winning formula for more than a decade. Regarded by the Japanese auto maker as ‘The Mazda’, the small car has become the brand’s most popular model around the world. The current Mazda3 arrived in Australia at the start of 2014 as the third model to join Mazda’s new-generation product line-up. Now the new version has gained the latest in small-car styling, plus a raft of innovations, including G-Vectoring control, Mazda’s new-generation vehicle dynamics technology, and price cuts that can only add to its appeal to buyers. Available as a sedan or hatch in Neo, Maxx, Touring, SP25, SP25 GT and Astina grades, the entry-level Neo price stays at $20,490, plus onroad costs, with other models taking cuts of between $1000 and $1500 from the previous model. With the choice of two engines, the 2.0-litre petrol, with 114 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque, is available on Neo, Maxx and Touring grades. The more powerful 2.5-litre petrol engine, with 138 kW and 250 Nm, comes standard on SP25, GT and Astina variants. The 2.2 litre turbo-diesel engine has been deleted due to lack of buyer interest in Australia. Mazda3 is available with a choice of either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. On test was the Mazda3 SP25 GT with auto, selling for $31,990. The new Mazda3 carries through the company’s Kodo design theme, now a constant across the auto maker’s complete range of vehicles. A mildly reworked front end, Mazda says, is designed to give the Mazda3 a wider look, thus a sense of stability and confidence in the car for driver and passengers alike. There’s a new deeper front grille and LED headlamps and foglights bringing the latest in technology to bear. The SP25 GT takes on electric folding mirrors and its own design alloy wheels. An updated cabin interior includes a simplified instrument design and a new steering wheel. USB inputs have been moved to the centre console and an electric parking brake is now standard. The instrument panel now has a three-dimen-

Exterior mirrors provide slightly better visibility around them for the driver. The all-colour head-up Active Driving Display displays vehicle speed, information from the navigation system and other important information on a clear plastic panel above the instruments. It’s rather basic and not as easy to see as conventional displays that reflect from the windscreen. Mazda’s MZD Connect uses smartphones to receive radio and play music from mobile audio players, and allows access to Aha, Pandora and Stitcher. A Bose premium audio system with Centerpoint 2 virtual surround sound playback technology is featured on the SP25 GT. The system can read email and short messages aloud while the vehicle is in motion using text-tovoice technology. When a smartphone is connected, it can read aloud the latest Twitter tweets and Facebook news, and also posts audio messages using the Shout function. All of which is potentially dangerous when used by drivers while on the move. As the suffix suggests, the SP25 GT is fitted with the bigger of the two engines on offer for the Mazda3. With 138 kW and 250 Nm, the 2.5-litre four-cylinder makes use of Mazda’s Skyactiv-G and i-stop engine stop / start technology.

SPORT Tough run-chase for Cats LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club will head in to day two of its clash with Prahran tomorrow staring down the barrel of a massive defeat after a horrid first day’s play last Saturday. Prahran won the toss and elected to bat first, and didn’t have it all their own way early, Jake Reed snaring an early wicket in his return from injury, while Brenton McDonald removed the other opener to have the game evenly posed at 2/87. But from there, the Cats were put to the sword as Shaun Miller knocked up 202 from just 211 balls, while Evan Gulbis smashed 136 from only 106. A 207-run partnership was finally ended when McDonald broke through, but the pain wasn’t over yet as Prahran cruised to 489 before declaring just six wickets down. That meant Geelong had to face nine overs before stumps, and disastrously lost three wickets to go to the close of play at 3/42. It would take a miracle for the Cats to win this, but their immediate focus will be to simply occupy the crease for as long as possible in the hope of avoiding an outright defeat. In the Geelong Cricket Association, the Division One ladder is already taking shape after three rounds, with the top sides starting to put some points on the board, while those expected to struggle are already battling to stay in finals contention. South Barwon leapt out of the blocks with a dominant display in round one, thrashing reign-

ing premier Grovedale, but since then have struggled to replicate that form, losing two on the trot to find themselves in seventh position on the ladder. This round they take on eighth placed Bell Post Hill, and while there is clearly still plenty of time left in the season, this is an extremely important game for both sides’ finals aspirations, as all clubs know the value of getting wins in the bank before Christmas. For the Swans, recruit Anthony Quarrell is showing his class, racking up 133 runs already at the top of the order, while young gun Luke Ford has racked up two classy half centuries thus far. But it would appear too much is being left to too few, meaning skipper Brad Hauenstein will be looking to the rest of his side to start to carry some of the load, a problem the Swans have suffered from for a few years now. For Bell Post Hill, the season hasn’t started as they would have hoped, with just the one win over newly promoted St Peter’s so far. The Panthers do have a decent side on paper, with the likes of Jason Grozdanovski who made a fine 81 last week, and Rhys Burke back in the side, but for some reason they have struggled to put it together. They won’t want to wait too much longer to find their best form, as a loss here will see them lose touch with the top six, and make a finals berth just that little bit harder. EAST BELMONT v Lara, NEWTOWN and CHILWELL v Murgheboluc, NORTH GEELONG v Geelong City, St Peter’s v ST JOSEPH’S, SOUTH BARWON v Bell Post Hill, GROVEDALE v Leopold

In Division Two, the match of the round will take place at Hamlyn Reserve when Bell Park hosts Highton in a game that will be a battle of two teams that will be there at the pointy end of the season. Bell Park have won three from three, and are flying early, with some gun recruits, and a new found vibrancy making for a potent mix. The key to their early success has been the even spread of contributors, with the likes of John Simpson who has three decent scores with the bat before chipping in with three wickets last week, while Ash Carter has already passed 150 runs. Skipper Michael Lymer will be rapt with how things have gone so far. Highton also have been in good form, and while their two wins so far have been against a couple of the lower ranked teams in the division, they will relish the opportunity to test exactly where they’re at this round. After a number of off season departures, the Heat has regrouped nicely with Joel Hogan stepping up to take the new ball, rewarded with a fivewicket haul last week, while Luke Buckland has slotted into the middle order nicely, top scoring with 42 not out last week. While the Heat will be going in with winning form, Bell Parks scalps have been a little more impressive and could be too strong here. ALEXANDER THOMSON v Modewarre, BELL PARK v Highton, Torquay v THOMSON, Marshall v NEWCOMB and DISTRICT, MANIFOLD HEIGHTS v St Albans Breakwater, Guild Saints v GEELONG WEST.

Cats of quality given extra year on football contracts The Cats have given one-year contract extensions to veteran defender Tom Lonergan and injuryplagued midfielder Josh Cowan. The new deal will send 32-year-old Lonergan into his 15th season with the Cats after 186 games since the club drafted him in 2002. Lonergan famously lost a kidney 10 years ago after an on-field collision in just his seventh AFL game, returning two years later to eventually become a premiership player in 2011. He played 22 games in 2016, finishing ninth in the Cats best-and-fairest. Cowan, 25, played nine consecutive AFL games in 2016, bringing his career tally to 14 over seven seasons. He has battled hamstring and Achilles injuries since the Cats drafted him with pick 59. Cats football general manager Steve Hocking said the club was pleased to secured both players for 2017. “We’re really pleased to have both Tom and Josh on board for another year. Their football talent, character and the way in which they live our values is an asset to the club,” Hocking said. “Tom’s football is still of the highest quality and we are confident he will continue to be a leader and mentor to our young defenders in 2017. “Josh is a young man with resilience and his work ethic and attitude towards his football is why he is so respected within the club. When things haven’t fallen his way, Josh’s character has never wavered and we look forward to seeing Josh enjoy continuity in his football.” The Cats also this week promoted defender Tom Ruggles to the primary list, retained rookie James Parsons and signed 19-year-old Irishman Mark O’Connor as a category B rookie. O’Connor impressed at the recent AFL draft combine as a two-time All-Ireland minor medallist. “I feel privileged and honoured to join such a great club as Geelong,” he said. “From the moment I walked into the club I felt comfortable and thought this would be the best place for me to pursue my AFL career. I’m looking forward to working hard with the coaches and players to improve my game and become a better player.” Cats recruiting manager Cats Wells said O’Connor was impressive at the combine and on “a personal level”. 32 GEELONG INDY Friday, 4 November, 2016

Patience gets them hooked ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Clifton Springs was the pick of locations for anglers seeking snapper last week. Patient anglers boated snapper to 7kg at the start of the Pt Richards channel using lightly weighted baits on a tide change. The edge of the channel produced excellent numbers of silver whiting, which made for some of the best snapper bait available. When the wind increased, the Curlewis Bank provided some shelter for tangling with impressive King George whiting and squid. Swan Bay’s channel showed no signs of slowing. Sam Pitman spent a few hours casting soft plastics along the channel edges where he had little difficulty boating salmon to 2kg. When the water cleared out the front of Swan Bay squid were taken in bag-limit captures. Trelly’s Tackleworld Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lugt and Peri Stravropoulos braved almost gale force winds at Queenscliff Harbour for catches of silver trevally to 40cm on four-inch Gulp Nemies, although small Australian salmon plagued their soft plastics. Jason Flynn and Daniel Quince launched out of Ocean Grove boat ramp early Saturday but had no luck offshore in 23m. They moved out to 40m and begun berleying, catching three snapper to 78cm and a 5kg gummy shark in the next half hour. The Barwon River estuary hosted anglers chasing bream, with the run-in tide producing fish to 40cm on live bait. Small salmon kept anglers busy near the entrance of the system, with pippies devoured in quick time. Surf anglers again enjoyed success on salmon, while fishing into the night with bait accounted for gummy sharks to 10kg. Estuary systems along the coast started to produce excellent numbers of bream and estuary perch on lures cast around the lower reaches. Freshwater fishos crossed paths some well-conditioned wild brown trout fishing in the Otways while casting small, shallowdiving, hard-body lures like Cranka Minnows. The Barwon River in Geelong gave up large carp to 6kg for keen anglers fishing corn on running sinker rigs. The best section of river was from Breakwater through to the Moorabool Street bridge. Lake Eildon was a go-to location for Murray cod and yellowbelly. Trolling and casting lures along steep, rocky points worked well, with brown trout over 2kg a welcome by-catch. Next week anglers should consider Queenscliff Harbour for trevally and pinkies, while the spoil grounds in Corio Bay’s inner and outer harbours could be worthwhile for snapper. Offshore from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads should also be worth fishing snapper and gummies as well, with anglers advised to watch for any bust-ups of salmon and kingfish.

ONE MORE YEAR: Josh Cowan has secured a contract extension after 14 games in seven seasons at Geelong. “The transition from Gaelic football to our game is never easy but we know that Mark will do everything he can to make that switch a success.

He has a great work ethic and a commitment to come to Geelong and do all the work necessary to become an AFL player.”
