Mayor’s cop alibi Casey’s recent mayor has denied the council was consulted prior to Victoria Police going ahead with the weekend-night closure of Endeavour Hills police station on 6 November. The State Government and police had shelved the trial in September after strident criticism from the Police Association and Casey council. In a statement, Victoria Police said the threemonth trial – which includes extra police patrols – was reinstated after holding a “range” of forums. The consultation included “discussion and early notification” to community groups, local media, Casey Council representatives and the Police Association. Re-elected Casey councillor Sam Aziz denied
SKIN CANCER CLINIC
the council was consulted on the trial as well as Police Minister Lisa Neville’s recent claim that she invited Casey to discussions on law-and-order. “Our CEO (Mike Tyler) has written (to the State Government) asking where is the evidence that you have invited us,” Cr Aziz said. “We never had a letter or a phone call.” Cr Aziz said the council would “not relent” lobbying for law-and-order measures to tackle an escalating crime rate in the region “until the Government starts listening”. “I can only imagine the people of Endeavour Hills and surrounding areas will be disappointed by this station closure. “We need more police on the beat as well as at the police station to address issues that can’t be resolved on a triple zero call.

“For victims of family violence, police stations may be the last refuge. “What will they do if the police station doors are shut?” As part of the trial, the once 24-hour police station’s front counter will be closed at 5pm on weekends rather than at 11pm. Casey police Inspector Donald Brown said the move would “maximise the amount of time police are out on patrol and responding to crime”. “We believe that this view is shared by most people in the community.” He said a local management review had found low numbers of people attending or phoning the station, especially on weekends. A spokesman for Police Minister Lisa Neville said the trial’s success will be assessed with local communities and senior police command.
“There will be no changes to counter hours without community consultation and evidence that police responses improve.” Opposition police spokesman Ed O’Donohue said he was concerned that the opening hours cut came during a “frontline police numbers crisis”. “Despite surging crime in Casey, local police stations at Endeavour Hills, Narre Warren and Cranbourne are stretched to the limit with calls for a new police station at Clyde.” Twenty additional frontline police are expected in Casey as part of a 300-officer statewide rollout in April. Police said that the Narre Warren police station counter will remain open for 24 hours a day and that urgent police assistance should be sought by calling triple zero.

In Brief Hit-run woman critical A hit-run in Dandenong left a 37-year-old woman in a critical condition. Detectives appealed for public help following the incident, which occurred at Alsace Street and Alexander Avenue about 10pm on Tuesday 25 October. Police said a white Toyota HiAce van and a Toyota Camry were parked near the intersection at the same time the victim was involved in a disagreement with two men out on the street. The men returned to the van and drove off but hit the woman in the process, police allege, and did not stop. An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said the woman had serious head, chest and pelvic injuries. Paramedics treated the woman and initially took her to Dandenong Hospital. She was later transferred by road to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition.

Freeway traffic changes Traffic on the Monash Freeway is about to get even crazier as temporary lane markers and yellow lines are rolled out to prepare for widening works. Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan made the announcement on Sunday 30 October that there will be traffic changes on the freeway between Eastlink and Clyde Road in both directions. These changes will have lanes realigned and speed limits reduced on the freeway through Dandenong, Doveton, Hallam, Narre Warren and Berwick. “We are alerting drivers to these works so they can consider the impact on their daily commute and plan ahead for the change in traffic conditions,” Mr Donnellan said. “We’re asking motorists to be patient, allow extra travel time and drive safely. “We thank you for your patience while works are underway.” Due to the shoulder strengthening works that have been underway since 18 September, the freeway will continue to have the same number of lanes open during peak-times as construction begins. The upgrading of the Monash Freeway is scheduled to be completed by 2018 and will see about 30kms of extra lanes added to the road.

prised,” Cr Stapledon said. “I had everything against me including a shocking flu, but I am honoured to be part of this community that have placed their trust and faith in me.” The Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate confirmed last week that there was an ongoing investigation regarding ballot papers being stolen from mail boxes in Mayfield Ward. “We’re keeping in touch with the VEC about the possible removal of ballot papers, but it is a very small number of confirmed cases where ballot papers have either been removed or not delivered to certain addresses,” a spokesperson for the Inspectorate said. “And as theft of mail (or incorrect addressing of material) does occur in some areas, we have to take all possibilities into account.” Cr Stapledon had said that while there was an investigation into these allegations, she trusts the VEC and the Inspectorate to deliver accurate election results. “If it has occurred, I think it would be thoroughly investigated before going to count,” she said. “I don’t believe they would have let the count go through without triple checking the ballots. Mayfield incumbent and now former councillor Gary Rowe was the last candidate to have his preferences wdistributed for the ward. Balla Balla Ward incumbent councillor Geoff Ablett was retured to his seat in a landslide victory. The new and returing councillors will be sworn in at a statutory meeting on Thursday 10 November and a new mayor elected.

Voters returned nine serving councillors and elected two new faces in the recent City of Casey election. The new and returning councillors were offically declared winners on Wednedsay 2 November at the declaration of the polls hosted by Casey returning officer Peter Lee.City of Casey Mayor and incumbent councillor for Springfield Ward Sam Aziz was narrowly returned to council. He will have to work with outspoken Casey council critic Rex Flannery, who replaces Louise Berkelmans. “I’m feeling great and I am grateful for people of Springfield for returning me to council,” Cr Aziz said. “I had a fierce campaign run against me with state-wide negative coverage and ridiculous accusations, but the voters paid attention to the scoreboard.” The other Springfield incumbent Louise Berkelmans lost her seat by 2514 woves after preference distribution. “I am disappointed to have lost Louise, and the community will be worse off without her,” Cr Aziz said. “I am happy to work alongside anyone, but people like Mr Flannery will soon find the luxury candidates are afforded during a campaign is very different from managing Victoria’s largest city. “I hope he will approach this with a collaborative mindset and refrain from the sort of behaviour we have seen during the election, and he will act as a leader of the people.” Rise Up Australia Party’s Rosalie Crestani has been voted back in the Four Oaks Ward, but former councillor Rafal Kaplon has lost his seat to
new face Milla Gilich. “It’s great to see the people who have come behind myself and Milla Gilich,” Cr Crestani said. “I will continue to serve Four Oaks and the wider Casey community, and I will continue to be the voice of the people on some of the most controversial issues.” “Safety is a big concern for me; I want to provide a community of peace and safety for all Casey residents, and I want to see that social issues are tackled as much as possible as well.“ River Gum Ward will have no change in representation as both Wayne Smith and Damien Rosario were returned, but Cr Smith says the competition was no less fierce. “Any competition is stiff competition, everyone wanted to win, but I think by our records the community were satisfied,” he said. “We are the only pair that has been returned which is a good thing for River Gum because they will have consistent representation and we have proved to be a good team.” “We have different views, but when it comes to ward decisions we support each other with our ideas and projects and people know they can come to either and we will both support them.” Incumbent Edrington Ward councillor Susan Serey was the first candidate in her ward to reach the necessary quota of votes to be elected with 28 per cent of first preference votes. She was joined by new councillor Timothy Jackson who ousted long-serving councillor Mick Morland. Amanda Stapledon was returned in Mayfield Ward along with Steve Beardon who trailed Cr Stapledon by just 401 votes after preference distribution. “I am so honoured and so grateful and sur12325795-CG40-16

Thirty-six arrests and 17 search warrants - it’s all in a month’s work for the Division Response Unit. Detective Senior Sergeant John Bergin said the search warrants related to drugs and were conducted throughout Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia during October. He said about 18 of the 36 arrests were wanted fugitives. Det Sen Sgt Bergin established the 20-member unit at Dandenong police station in late August to tackle drug crime and fugitives across Southern Metro Region Division Three. He’s pleased with how it’s operated so far. “We’ve had some information coming in from the public as well,” he said.

Church did little to stop abuse By Cam Lucadou-Wells Catholic authorities should have removed Holy Family parish priest Peter Searson more than a decade earlier, counsel assisting a Royal Commission has submitted. The late Father Searson had been accused of a litany of child sexual abuses, assaults and other disturbing behaviour as the Doveton parish priest from 1984. It was not until 13 years later that he was forced into administrative leave by the then-Melbourne Archbishop George Pell. In its written submission released on 31 October, counsel assisting the Royal Commission into institutional responses to child sexual abuse stated there was evidence to oust Searson at least as early as 1986. “Instead, Archbishop (Frank) Little chose to do nothing and in doing so he failed to protect the children of the parish,” counsel Gail Furness SC and Stephen Free wrote. The multiple allegations of Searson’s sexual misconduct were not adequately investigated by the Catholic Archdiocese until 1996, they stated. “There was compelling evidence that Searson had engaged in serious sexual misconduct and was a risk to children, and that the Archbishop must suspend him from parish duties and initiate canonical action to remove him permanently from the priesthood.” The submission lays blame at now-Cardinal Pell and three bishops who personally received complaints but failed to act with “sufficient firmness and frankness” to persuade Archbishop Little to act against Searson. “When asked whether there was any inadequacy in the manner he handled Searson as Auxiliary Bishop, Cardinal Pell said ‘very little - precisely because of my limited knowledge’. “‘In retrospect, I might have been a bit more pushy with all the parties involved’,” he is quoted to have said. In his evidence, Cardinal Pell stated the Catho-
lic Education Office had inadequately briefed him on the list of issues ahead of the meeting with teachers. He said the education office at the time deceived him partly to protect Archbishop Little, who had been inactive on the Searson matter. The Archdiocese had known of an alleged rape of a woman while Searson was chaplain to the Villa Maria Blind Society in 1974, according to the counsel assisting. At Holy Family, complaints were made of Searson brandishing a gun, killing a bird with a screwdriver, holding a knife to a young girl, frequenting boys’ toilets as well as several acts of child sexual abuse. “There was gross and repeated inaction by a number of senior Archdiocesan officials in the face of serious and credible allegations,” the counsel assisting wrote. “It involved conscious inaction by senior Archdiocesan officials over more than a decade.” The inaction had caused “catastrophic human consequences” to an altar boy, identified as BVC, who gave evidence of Searson’s raping him for four years from 1992. “The fact that Searson remained in a position of authority as a parish priest, which he exploited to abuse BVC, is directly attributable to the ongoing failure of the Archdiocese to take available action against Searson.” The Journal reported in late 1986 that Holy Family parishioners and parents had called a public meeting to demand Searson’s axing. Royal Commission evidence revealed that a week after the Journal’s report, Father Searson had requested a transfer from the Doveton parish. Archbishop Little declined the transfer because he deemed there was no suitable parish for Father Searson to go to. Cardinal Pell, as then Archbishop of Melbourne, dismissed Father Searson in 1997 after police laid a charge of assaulting a boy.

Finally, a roof over our heads…almost! The steel for the iconic winged roof of Bunjil Place has arrived on site and is beginning to be installed. This is a very significant milestone for the project and it will be really exciting to watch as the roof takes shape and spreads out over the building. On site, the final pre-cast panels for the theatre auditorium have been put in place, final concrete slabs have all been poured and the services continue to be roughed in (plumbing etc). As we move towards the internal fit out of the building, there are multiple trades on site at any one time. From concrete contractors to steel providers and services contractors, there’s up to 150 tradies at Bunjil Place daily. Behind the scenes, the timber grid shell which will feature in the foyer is starting to come to life. A prototype of the grid has been constructed by German group Hess, and it shows just how big the structure will actually be. We are looking forward to seeing this unique piece come together, adding a real WOW factor to Bunjil Place. Visit www.bunjilplace.com.au to see how the different building features will look once complete!

An 89-year-old woman feared for her life as she was choked “out of the blue“ by a much younger female stranger at Endeavour Hills shopping centre. The victim had been sitting on chairs next to her attacker, believed to be in her 20s, outside Woolworths supermarket about 11am on 23 October. Without provocation, the other woman then allegedly stood up, repeatedly punched the victim to the arm and throttled her. The victim cried out for help, leading to a male by-stander to enquire if the two women knew each other. The victim, who had attended the centre with family members, told him that she’d never seen the other woman before. Another female then walked out of the supermarket. She told off the attacker and left the
scene with her. The attacker was described as medium height and stocky build with short, light-brown hair and wearing a turquoise jumper over a pink top. Senior Constable Marvin Johnson of Endeavour Hills police said the victim stated she was in “fear for her life” during the attack, especially given her pre-existing heart difficulties. Sen Const Johnson said the victim had sought medical assistance the day after the assault. “The victim is understandably distressed. She thought her heart would give out. “It happened pretty quickly. She has no idea who (the attacker) is. “It was just out of the blue.” The victim made her statement to police on 3 November, describing her disappointment in shopping centre security personnel. 1 November 1966 Another title for Pauline Pauline Verey of Dandenong was chosen the winner of the Miss Victoria title in the Miss Australia Quest on Saturday and she will go on to contest the Miss Australia title with other states’ finalists. Pauline is no novice in the beauty strakes. She was Miss Moomba Queen two years ago and she was also a strongly favoured entrant in a Miss Universe quest. Three other girls from the Dandenong district were in the running - Ingrid Poeschmann of Dandenong, Lyn Steel of Springvale, and Ann Unsworth of Frankston.
The Referendum The latest returns in regard to the compulsory service referendum are “No” 1,110,176, “Yes” 1,042,506. “No” majority 67,610. Training Camp at Dandenong At the last meeting of the Dandenong Shire Council it was decided to approach the Defence Department with a view to establishment of a military camp in the Police Paddocks at Dandenong - a site eminently suited for the purpose. In view of the fact that the Warragul camp is now in such a state that the men in training have been despatched to their homes until Thursday, it would be interesting to know how far the negotiations have proceeded in the interest of Dandenong.
20 years ago 4 November 1996 Arts Awakening Plans for a multi-million dollar cultural centre
in Dandenong have raised hopes the heart of the city will be given a new lease of life. The committee for the City of Greater Dandenong has launched a proposal to build major regional performing arts, entertainment and function facility in the central activities district within the next two years. “It would be great,” said the city’s economic, social and cultural planning manager, Mr Graeme Douglas, who estimated the cost of the project at “more than $40 million”. Two architects have submitted designs for the centre. Bill Williams Architect’s bid includes: · A theatre with 800 seats on three levels; · An intimate theatre to accommodate 300; and · A recital hall to cater for 1500 and a jazz bar, cafe/restaurant and other ancillary activities and community storage facilities. Genser and Associates propose a centre with: · Retail area;
· An amphitheatre; · Two theatres with 500 and 1500 seats; and · The existing town hall to be used as a change room area. · The committee estimates 50 per cent of the funding would come from income generated from hall hiring.

The celebration has been organised by a group of parents who had children at Keysborough Primary School before it closed in 1993.
A not so sweet taste of success By Cam Lucadou-Wells There’s a revolution in desserts that is not so sweet. Popping up in Springvale is an exclusively Asian dessert house Dessert Story – which depends less on the heavy dairy and sugar flavours. Look at the menu and you find different types of beans, Hong Kong-inspired herbal jellies, black rice, tofu, taro, sweet potato, green tea and coconut cream. One of its most popular dishes is the Taiwanese snow ice – an imposing tower of frozen coconut milk. It has optional coatings in popping jelly spheres with mango squares, green tea or chocolate. However it is a lighter proposition than its Western dairy ice-cream equivalents such as banana splits. Its flavours are subtle but the coolness is re-

Model aeroplane club’s hard landing Burglars with angle grinders have repeatedly targeted a community aircraft-model flying club in Narre Warren. The Hobbyzone Electric Model Aero Club’s shipping container on Centre and Fullard roads has had its roof whirly-bird ventilator destroyed three times and its thick door locks partially cut repeatedly in the past year. Club president Ian Goh said the not-for-profit club was footing bills of $400 after each attack. A $1800 ride-on lawn mower and a $495 shade cloth have been stolen during the burglaries. Mr Goh said the 70-member club supported homelessness charities and provided its entertainment to people with disabilities, but had tired of being under attack by “thugs” and “idiots”. “With money repeatedly spent on damage repairs, it really hampers our club’s effort to improve its facility. “It is very demoralising for our members.” It started first with graffiti vandals. ceased after HEMAC members started immediately painting over the vandalism within 24 hours. Then the front door locks were attacked by burglars armed with portable angle grinders that couldn’t completely cut through. In September, the club replaced its whirly bird with a metal plate on the roof - which will cause the container to heat up to extreme temperatures in summer. “We rather sacrifice comfort for security,” Mr Goh said. The community club has also installed a simcard based alarm system to deter intruders. “Only after one week of the steel plate installation, the roof alarm was triggered late at night. “There was no incident as we were there promptly with a bright flashlight only to see a person jump off the roof and running away.” In the most recent incident, a burglar had hacked off the roof ’s steel plate at 8.45am on 19 October. In response, the club installed a thicker metal plate.

A proponent of a mosque in Narre Warren North has been given a public rebuff from newly elected Casey councillor Sam Aziz on Facebook. On his own Facebook page, Cr Aziz posted a knock back to a peace offering from Saarban Islamic Trust adviser James Randall, telling him he won’t “engage in discussion with hypocrites”. “Your movement supported candidates that openly pushed a ‘Muslims versus the rest of us’ agenda in the (council election) campaign, where I was the main target,” Cr Aziz posted. Cr Aziz noted Mr Randall’s participation in an Islamophobic Watch video titled Racism and the City of Casey last month. “On the one hand you say that Casey Muslims have no intention of becoming foot-soldiers for the left, and yet you and others participated in a video again falsely claiming that Casey council’s decision on the mosque was racist,” Cr Aziz wrote. “My dialogue will be with the leaders of the Islamic community... who won’t insult my intelligence by mounting vicious attacks against me during an election campaign, then come crawling when they are defeated so comprehensively.” Mr Randall had earlier emailed Cr Aziz an invitation to jointly tackle “divisive hate speech” and “paint a brighter future for our city”. Mr Randall wrote that Saarban wanted to “correct the mistakes that caused such harm to City of Casey”. “This will require both sides to come to the table, especially my own side including members of Casey Against Racism.” After congratulating Cr Aziz on his re-election, Mr Randall wrote that Casey was in need of “helpful dialogue” and “an end to the mudslinging that provoked the negative press”.
The majority of Casey Against Racism members wanted to excise themselves from a “leftist minority” trying to hijack the group, Mr Randall stated. “It led to the cynical conclusion that they had the intention of sabotaging any hope for a mosque, in order to win them a foothold of support in Casey.” In April, the trust’s proposed mosque at 365367 Belgrave-Hallam Road was unanimously rejected by the council, led by then mayor Cr Aziz. The decision was greeted with rancour, especially by Casey Against Racism, which includes Mr Randall as a member. Saarban has recently told Star News that it intends to apply for a scaled-down mosque on the same site after November’s election. Mr Randall told Star News that he would lodge a formal complaint to Casey against Cr Aziz for breaking a pledge of keeping their email correspondence confidential. “I made the mistake of thinking Sam was a mature adult but I was wrong.” Cr Aziz said Mr Randall’s complaint was silly because “email is public and open communication”. “He had asked me for that confidentiality because he was apparently scared or something.” Cr Aziz said that the council wouldn’t “punish people on account of their stupidity”. “We will continue to apply the law equally and fairly to everybody.” Re-elected councillor Rosalie Crestani more than doubled her primary vote on the back of strongly opposing the mosque in her Four Oaks Ward. Cr Crestani agreed with Cr Aziz’s assertion that the community sent a “very strong message”. “My gut feeling is my community is very concerned about having any structure there in that location.”

John Wells, Lynne Bradley, Rob Wilson and Anthony Byrne at the book launch. 161459
Battles of an epic life By Cam Lucadou-Wells Thirty years after his father died, former Casey mayor Rob Wilson decided it was time to immortalise an epic life. In his self-published book To Boort from Lesmahagow, Mr Wilson chronicled his father David’s life growing up on a Scottish dairy farm, serving with the Scottish infantry in World War I and subsequent peace-keeping, and raising a family in trying times in Australia. During the task, the Narre Warren author delved into 150 years of family history. He collected meticulous diary notes of his uncle Jimmy who served in David’s WWI unit, as well as treasured medals, fresh-faced photos and memorabilia from his father’s military service. He said he knew a lot about his vibrant father through an interview in 1976 but felt an urge to write down what was in his head “before it was too late”. This thorough “living history” was complemented by written tributes from David’s other children Val, Rose, Adrian, Ian, Kelvin and Graeme to paint a portrait of a “stranger in a foreign land”. At the book launch on 2 November, Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL president John Wells said biographies like this give people a “sense of who we can be”.
If faced with hardships such as war, drought or a Great Depression, how much courage would be still in this country, Mr Wells pondered. “The answer is there is as much as there ever was.” Holt MP Anthony Byrne said such family histories stood as important records of the past for future generations. “I encourage others to follow your example,” he told Mr Wilson. Mr Wilson made the point that his father perhaps because he was struck by “the rod” as a child and witnessed the so-called Great War’s horrors - never laid a hand on his children. David had enlisted underage, as a 17-yearold, in the Royal Lowland Scottish Infantry and became a Lewis gunner - manning a primitive machine gun. Mr Wilson tells of how the Scottish Highlanders, in their kilts, had their legs badly burnt by the corrosive mustard gas unleashed on the battlefields. Fortunately for David, as a lowlander, he wore pants. From uncle Jimmy’s notes, Mr Wilson lists the exotic towns in Egypt, Palestine, France and Belgium where the two brothers served for four years - including a year of peace-keeping. Rarely did their unit settle in a place for more than a month, often they moved on within a cou-
ple of days. Mr Wilson coloured his book with some wartime memories of his father, such as the all too bitter coffee in France and Belgium, the sweetest oranges in Jaffa or the painful use of pliers to ‘soothe’ a toothache. He also researched the efforts of the 52nd Lowland Division in a successful surprise attack on the Ottoman army in Gaza, Palestine, on 1 November 1917 - attaching a letter by General Edmund Allenby praising his troops weeks later. “By real hard fighting, determination, and Scottish pluck during two months you have won yourselves a great name,” the general wrote. “By drunkenness and insubordination you can lose that fine name in hours!!!” The book then follows David’s hard-working life, raising a family with wife Julie in Boort through the Great Depression and World War II. During that war, David became a virtual Sergeant Major who trained Boort’s civilians to defend their town. The street lights were blacked out and street signs taken down - in case of invasion, Mr Wilson writes. After the war, David and Julie moved to Melbourne’s south east where they remained for the rest of their lives. Copies of the book have been presented to Lynne Bradley on behalf of Narre Warren Family History Group as well as Narre Warren Library.

Firefighter taking steps for a cause By Victoria Stone-Meadows A Narre Warren North fire-fighter will be tackling 88 storeys of stairs in full fire-fighting gear on 13 November when he takes on the Eureka Climb challenge. Andrew Norman, 26, from Endeavour Hills will be raising money and representing the Narre Warren North CFA when he climbs the stairs of Eureka Tower to raise money for charity. Mr Norman will be carrying 23 kilograms of fire-fighting equipment from the base of the tower up 300 metres of vertical staircase to the Eureka Skydeck for the fourth year in a row. The first year I did it, I thought the cause was really good and the two foundations do really great work,” Mr Norman said. “Along the way I’ve found it is still a good thing to do.” Mr Norman said he didn’t just do the stair
climb for himself, but to help other people who were participating as well. “I often help people with self-motivation - if they are struggling up the stairs I encourage them to keep going; I’m there to help others as well.” Participants in the Eureka Climb challenge raise money through sponsorship and entry fees that go towards the charities Interplast and Whitelion. Interplast sends medical teams to developing countries to provide life-saving treatment to some of the world’s most desperate people. Whitelion works with disadvantaged young people to break cycles of physical and drug abuse to improve their futures. Mr Norman will be taking on the challage of a timed climb and is hoping to beat his personal best time of 11.5 minutes and is quietly confident he could be the fastest climber on the day. “I think I’m in with a chance but there are some quick people out there,” he said.

Looking forward A Berwick school has offered visitors the chance to experience blindness at an open school event. Insight Education Centre for the Blind and Vision Impaired invited people to walk from Buchanan Park to the centre with blind students along a dedicated accessibility footpath on 28 October. The participants then wore a blindfold around its sensory garden and playground. Students then rode on the centre’s accessible bike track on scooters and tricycles donated by Bicycle Superstore and City of Casey, and competed against guests in a ‘swish’ table tennis tournament. Insight principal Timothy Hemphill said “sighted visitors” would marvel at the skill of their students. “We believe it’s not about what students can’t do, but what they can, despite challenges and obstacles.”

VIDEO – To watch Take Two go to berwick. starcommunity.com
Film maker Lily Lunder is a fan of dystopian mysterious tales.
By Cam Lucadou-Wells UFO mysteries have captured the imagination of 12-year-old film-maker Lily Lunder. Her creepy film Take Two with her Gleneagles Secondary College Year 7 drama classmates was selected as a finalist in the Australian Centre for the Moving Image’s Screen It awards 2016. It’s the second year in a row that Lily has been nominated for the awards. Her latest work, complete with eerie music, freak-out sound effects and crisp special animation, is inspired by the Westall High School UFO incident and Kelly Cahill incident in Narre Warren. “I find both of these incidents interesting because they are things that can’t be explained and show us that we aren’t alone,” Lily said. “It was really coincidental because I was looking for something that was related to my school, so then I realised that the school was in the mid-
dle of the two sightings.” Without giving anything away, there’s a memorable cameo by a “girl who hits her head” at the end of the four-and-a-half minute flick. Lily was director, cinematographer, producer, storyboard artist and co-writer of the work, managing a 25-member cast including her drama teacher. “It was a good experience even though it was difficult for me to gain the same respect that the teacher does. “I love all the different roles you can take on as a film-maker - you don’t get bored of it that way.” Lily has plans to make many more movies particularly in the “live action” genre. “I like to be able to tell stories with morals through films, so maybe something based around that. “I would also really love to make a film with a dystopian setting.” Lily and her class will attend the gala red carpet awards night at ACMI on 18 November.

Ex-cop pushes to share the shock By Cam Lucadou-Wells Damien Howard has launched his crowd-funding website for his proposed TAC-style “shock” commercial against family violence. The former Narre Warren and Cranbournebased police officer said it will tackle a scourge that’s killing a woman in Australia every week. Mr Howard has seen hundreds of households wrecked by abusive husbands and dads in Casey. He said no other issue took up so much police time. He said one in four children experience family violence and then copy their parents’ tortured dynamics. They copy those “little things” that go under the radar and as a result they are three times more likely to be perpetrators or victims of family violence as adults. In his advertisement Mr Howard intends to show not only the impact on the partner but also the damage to her children.
“It will show there are many victims of domestic violence and how it destroys lives. “It’s designed to educate and shock.” Mr Howard has seen brutal relationships maintained without complaint through 20 years of abuse. It doesn’t need to be physically violent to inflict deep wounds on the victims, he said. Psychological abuse is the most damaging but also, sadly, the most tolerated. Even after her partner has threatened to kill her, sometimes the victim doesn’t think he is doing anything wrong, he said. “She says he’s not a bad guy because he doesn’t hit her.” For his family violence campaign, he is seeking $7000 through a crowd-funding site launched on 29 October. The fund-raising ends on 27 November. Every $1 in $10 raised will go to the White Ribbon Foundation. More information at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/no-moretolerance/x/15272072#/
Jobs booked in Mossgiel Park Primary School students lent a hand in a just-published careers book series for children. Author Julie Dascoli attended the school with two of her interview subjects - hairdresser Lisa Lonsdale and children’s librarian Jessica Broom to present copies of the My Job Rules! book series on 26 October. Students had supplied questions for Ms Dascoli to quiz workers in 10 professions including Ms Lonsdale and Ms Broom. Ms Dascoli said this was designed to ensure students’ queries were addressed in the books, which follow the workers’ journeys to their chosen jobs. The other featured professions were kindergarten teacher, equine service provider, optometrist, architect, bank manager, web designer, zoo keeper and aircraft maintenance engineer. The books of five non-fiction readers are for children between Years 4 and 8.

In order for young people to succeed in an increasingly complex environment, children need a high quality education; to be taught skills to achieve success, and to think critically, enabling them to become good decision-makers, responsible global citizens and lifelong learners.
Lyndhurst Secondary College is a dynamic and diverse learning community that seeks to empower students for learning and life.
Maranatha is a safe Christian learning community in partnership with home and church that helps children find true success in life. Through a model of Christcentred education within a safe environment, we seek to inspire children to think Christianly about the world, and so use their God given gifts and talents for the benefit of others.
We focus on developing core skills of literacy and numeracy in our students. The provision of a dedicated reading space promotes the power of reading for improving literacy and Years 7-9 students receive individualised numeracy instruction through our Student Numeracy Individualised Program (SNIP), where students are placed in Mathematics classes according to their ability.
Life is a journey, but with a great foundation in the partnership that is Maranatha, children can become the fine young men and women God intended them to be.

COVER STORY
LUXURIOUS INCLUSIONS Have you been comparing apples with bananas? Comparing prices with different builders can be difficult and confusing to say the least. While one builder’s price may look a lot cheaper and more appealing than the next builder, customers often then find that the cheaper price doesn’t include many of the items they need or want in their home. By the time they add all of these extra items to what they thought was a cheaper price, the cost of their new home ends up being a lot more expensive than the builders they had previously discarded. With the SJD Homes Aspire collection, astute home buyers will delight in finding a huge range of luxury items that are included at no extra cost. The base price of any Aspire range home includes double glazed windows throughout, stone bench tops to the kitchen and bathrooms, three-coat paint system, cabinetry to the laundry, Colorbond roof, flyscreens and locks to windows, 900mm upright stove and much more. The Aspire range also includes items that give that finishing touch with things we
may not initially think of when building a new home, such as soft closing drawers and doors to the kitchen, tiled shower bases, tri-locking door furniture, and shower rails to both the ensuite and bathroom showers. All of these can add that extra level of detail, value and comfort to your home. The prices, service and quality of build at SJD Homes is reflected in their rave online customer reviews and award-winning homes. Discerning buyers would be hard pressed to find better luxury inclusions in the base price of this standard of home, than the Aspire Range at SJD Homes. Buyers can visit www.sjdhomes.com.au to view the complete Aspire Range of designs, virtual tours and price lists. Alternatively, phone 1300 753 466 to speak to a sales consultant, or visit SJD’s display homes, pick up an Aspire inclusions list and look out for the Aspire range stickers throughout the homes to view first-hand what is included in the base price.

NEW HOMES & LAND
GRAND VIEW FOR NEW HOME Grandvue, one of Officer’s premium estates, sets itself apart from its competitors offering titled lots to buyers with superior views of the surrounding area. The elevated living proposition often creates a far more unique and interesting build outcome. Homes built across split levels allow for an abundant amount of natural light and
separate living areas, often catering to families with children. Buyers can find themselves a builder they can trust to really maximise the attributes of the block. They don’t wait six to 12 months for the construction of roads, services to be connected and titles to be released. Lot sizes range from 774-1775 square
metres and prices start from $261,000. Grandvue is ideally located within easy reach of all life’s necessities. A wide range of primary, secondary schools and colleges are on the doorstep and there is a proposed new shopping centre across the road and the Toomuc recreation reserve is only minutes away. Journey time to Melbourne’s CBD via the
M1 is approximately 45 minutes with train services running directly from the Officer station which is a short three-minute drive from Grandvue. Grandvue Land Sales Office, Grandvue Boulevard, Officer, is open seven days a week from 11am-6pm. For more information visit grandvue.com. au or phone 1300 737 851.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Clover enjoys last meal By Alana Mitchelson Berwick’s iconic fine dining restaurant Clover Cottage will close down early next year after its private sale last week. The existing owner John Chipperfield said that the eight-acre Manuka Road property had been sold to an investment company. “They have no intention to subdivide,” the 72-year-old said. “They haven’t purchased it as a business. Whether it’s leased out as a restaurant or not, I have no clue.” The final restaurant night at Clover Cottage will be on New Year’s Eve, with booked functions continuing through January and early February. “When we bought the property, there was a farm across the road,” Mr Chipperfield said. “It wasn’t a bare block of land. There were gardens but everything as you see it today - the cottage and the garden - we designed ourselves. “I was inspired by my aunt and uncle’s house in Kew as a child and have always loved old English and Victorian-style decoration.” The entrance gates were made in 1840 for Oliver Gilpin, the founder of Melbourne’s first cash and carry grocery, while the fountains were imported from England and France. Clover Cottage opened at its Manuka Road site in 1979, with the Chipperfields living in the original cottage at the back of the restaurant. Their 1860s weatherboard house had been one of two twin cottages that was used as a country retreat by the Armytage family which owned South Yarra’s Como House. From the start, the ambience and abundant smorgasbord ensured full-house bookings. In the restaurant’s first 60 days, 58 were booked out. The Chipperfields have had many loyal staff members over the years, some staying with them for more than 30 years. Mr Chipperfield said he had cooked all but

It’s precious to us. We were so young when we opened
up and we’ve seen lots of generations through the restaurant. “We’ve waited on many celebrities but it hasn’t been the high flyers keeping us alive all these years, it’s been our guests who have saved their hard-earned dollars for a special dinner at the cottage. “It’s been an amazing journey. “But, sadly, it’s time.”
Office workers set for taxing times on Eureka climb By Casey Neill Noble Park’s Martin Kowalczyk and his Australian Tax Office colleagues are gearing up for the climb of their lives. The 34-year-old will take 1642 stairs and his 11 Uncanny Taxmen teammates in this year’s Eureka Climb on Sunday 13 November. It’s the first time Mr Kowalczyk has entered the race to the top of Melbourne’s tallest building. He’ll have to conquer 88 levels and 300 metres of elevation to reach the finish line at the highest observation deck in the Southern Hemisphere. “We’ve all been in training to complete the event to raise funds for Interplast and Whitelion charities, so that they may continue their great work rebuilding young lives,” Mr Kowalczyk said. “Interplast works to improve lives of people in developing countries who are disabled as a result of congenital medical conditions.” The non-profit particularly focuses on cleft lips and palates, burns and scars. “Whitelion works with disadvantaged members of our community who come from abusive families, and are affected by sexual, drug and/or alcohol abuse,” Mr Kowalczyk said. Mr Kowalczyk is running a raffle in his office and seeking sponsorship, with $400 his goal. There will be a timed stairwell for climbers who want to race against the clock and an untimed stairwell for those who’d prefer a more leisurely pace. Last year’s event raised more than $260,000 and this year’s target is even higher. Search for The Uncanny Taxmen at www.eurekaclimb.com.au to support the team.
Uncanny Taxmen team members Martin Kowalczyk, Pravat Ghose, Linton Hutchinson-Kern, Janette Pearson, Shoriful Huq, Amela Ademi, Brian Hamill, Clement Louey, Patrick Cao and Asha Rani Khuttan.
Rotary fundraiser to deliver networking on a plate Rotarians are hosting a business breakfast for networking, information and fund-raising. The Rotary Clubs of Dandenong, Dandenong South East, Casey, Endeavour Hills, Berwick and Narre Warren are joining forces to run their second breakfast in Dandenong on Wednesday 16 November. Dandenong South East president Athol Bailey
said the event had three specific purposes. The clubs want to present quality speakers to keep business owners up-to-date. This time around they’ve arranged Dandenong MP and Parliamentary Secretary for Industry and Employment Gabrielle Williams and Macpherson and Kelley lawyers Victorian managing principal James Sturgess.
The event will be held in the Red Cedar Room at Beletti Restaurant Cafe Bar, 159 Lonsdale Street, Dandenong, at 6.45am for a 7.15am start. Tickets are $50 and available from www.trybooking.com/237926. Call Athol Bailey on 0418 177 947 for more information.
Printing money for equipment A Hallam-based manufacturer has received state funding towards a $1.875 million project for a printer and other new equipment. Printing and design firm Norwood Industries received the grant under the Future Industries Manufacturing Program which offers funding of up to $500,000 to eligible firms. The grant, which has been kept commercial-in-confidence, will go towards buying and installing a large-format printer and associated equipment. It is expected to lead to Norwood doubling its digital production and manufacturing capacity, creating two new full-time jobs and boosting its exports by $100,000. Dandenong MP and Parliamentary Secretary for Industry and Employment Gabrielle Williams announced the grant on a visit to Norwood on 31 October. She said the grants program helped Victoria transition towards an “advanced manufacturing economy”. Norwood is known as a world-leading specialist in printing on plastic and unusual surfaces. It uses sophisticated UV print technology. The manufacturer also provides packaging design and distribution of items such as self-adhesive signage, binders and satchels. The State Government claims 13 recent grants to Victorian-based manufacturers under the program were expected to create 97 new full-time jobs. More information about the Manufacturing Program is available at the Business Victoria website www.business.vic.gov.au/ fimp or by calling 13 22 15.
Unsafe lighters burn importer In one of their biggest ever hauls, product safety inspectors seized 34,000 unsafe cigarette lighters from a Dandenong importer. The Consumer Affairs Victoria team said the lighters did not meet mandatory Australian product safety standards. The 33,767 disposable lighters without safety warnings and 628 banned novelty lighters that young children could mistake for toys had a total retail value of $100,000. Consumer Affairs Victoria director Simon Cohen said the seizure also included 68 pairs of sunglasses that did not have the required safety labelling. Inspectors traced the products to the Dandenong-based importer last month after they were found on sale at a store in Epping. Mr Cohen said potentially dangerous goods were subject to mandatory product safety standards in Australia. Disposable lighters must be permanently marked with the name of the manufacturer or distributor and ‘Keep away from children’ or ‘Keep out of reach of children’. Toy-like novelty lighters are subject to an outright permanent ban. Sunglasses must be clearly marked or labelled with the name of the manufacturer or supplier, the lens category number and a description of the category. Those who supply goods that do not meet mandatory standards or are subject to a permanent ban, including importers, can face fines of up to $1.1 million for body corporates and $220,000 for individuals. “Lighters can be extremely dangerous, especially in the hands of young children,” Mr Cohen said. “Consumer Affairs Victoria takes a zero-tolerance approach when it comes to product safety breaches in order to keep Victorians safe from harm.” 29 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 7 November, 2016
Jack says show is in the blood By Cam Lucadou-Wells ‘Stalwart’ doesn’t do justice to Jack Rae - who has helped organise Dandenong Show for the past 70 years. Mr Rae, 88, joined the agricultural show society’s committee as an 18-year-old following in the footsteps of his father, George. “There’s quite a bit of show blood in us,” Mr Rae said. “I’ve moved around the show world a bit ... it does seem to get in the system.” The Narre Warren North cattle farmer is a former show president and remains the show’s chief steward. He’s on the committee that spends the best part of a year organising each annual show. Remarkably Mr Rae’s involvement still spans less than half of the show’s 145-year history. Mr Rae said the show format has not changed much but there remains no better entertainment for families. “Why do we still run a show now? It’s an opportunity for people to come now and mingle, but there’s also a value in learning how to look after animals. “Without the shows, people wouldn’t have the same access to things like the animal nursery or the children exhibiting their schoolwork or the equestrian riding. “I see it as a community benefit, I might say. That’s the pleasure of being involved.” Mr Rae can remember times when farmers used to herd their cattle and ride their horses from their pastures to the showgrounds. As kids, he and his brother Bert and sister Thelma drove their cows to Berwick Showgrounds. He recalls that 70 years ago, the Dandenong showgrounds were set in the middle of town, at the current Dandenong Market site. The site was home to the stock market and a football ground ringed by a cycle-racing track. During World War II, the show moved to the Berwick showgrounds while the Australian Army camped at the Dandenong site. After “a fair bit of reluctance”, the show made a permanent move to its more spacious 60-acre
Shows are in the blood of Jack Rae, right, with brother Bert and sister Thelma Witham - and a portrait of their father George. 153094 base at Greaves Reserve. Mr Rae said the Greaves family - noted pastoralists in Lang Lang and Dandenong - had donated 22 of those acres to the show society in the 1900s. That land was augmented by a donated parcel from the City of Dandenong to form an offer too good to refuse. The original showgrounds were exchanged to become part of the council’s former Clow Street offices.
Mr Rae marvels at the foresight of councillors and the Greaves. “How well does Greaves Reserve serve the community now!” The future of the show looks assured to Mr Rae, though Dandenong has long since been over-run by suburbia. Small but growing numbers of new communities are coming through the gates, and the show

committee has a healthy injection of young blood. “At every town and city that has an agricultural show, it is recognised as something of value to the community. “There are not many agricultural shows that have had to close. And the shows, in the main, have been going 100-plus years. “It’s about sharing your knowledge - that’s why shows were started.”

Kids playing up The City of Casey has hosted a ‘Spring into Play’ day as part of International Children’s Week at the Old Cheese Factory in Berwick. The free family fun day out saw children of all ages and their parents join in the activities of offer. Children were encouraged to dress up in their favorite clothes/costumes and everyone celebrated the value children add to a community.
There were activities on offer for everyone including face painting, a sausage sizzle, art and craft activities, music and a chance to play and explore the recently-redeveloped playground. International Children’s Week runs from 22 to 30 October each year and is a national program recognising the talents, skills, achievements and rights of young people, supported by all levels of government.

SPORT Draft grilling put Battle straight By Nick Creely Sometimes the tough conversations in life are the ones that truly make a difference. That’s certainly the case for draft prospect Josh Battle who in November 2015 walked into an AFL club for a routine draft interview. The 18-year-old key-forward, who had been a success in the TAC Cup program for the Dandenong Stingrays, was blindsided by a series of stinging hard truths about his game. “It was actually my first ever interview with an AFL club so I didn’t know what to expect. “They asked me “how do you think you’d go at the top level?” and we got into a pretty in-depth conversation and they blatantly just told me that my endurance wasn’t good enough and that I’m only a one position player and almost undraftable,” he said. “Thinking back to that moment, it did hurt but at the end of the day I couldn’t be more grateful to that person for saying that to me. “It was such a driving force for me throughout pre-season and it was always in the back of my mind that I needed to get fitter and work a lot harder. “That same club has spoken to me this year so I’d be grateful if given the chance with them. “I’ve really worked hard on a lot of things; being that third tall forward you have to add a few more strings to your bow and I wasn’t great with my endurance. “I did a lot of extra work and extra sessions and now I strongly believe that is one of my strengths now. “I pride myself on running my opponents ragged and I just try to isolate myself in dangerous positions.” Battle, who will have his name read out at next
Forward Josh Battle could be the first Stingray taken in next month's AFL draft. 152135 month’s AFL National Draft, was also a talented junior cricketer and had to make a tough decision a few years ago on which sport to pursue.
“It was a pretty hard decision, but Dad sort of – after a long day of cricket – noticed it was all too much, and then having footy practice the next
Hu hits his stride after overcoming pits of failure By Nicholas Creely When hopes are high but the dream falls into a heap, the pain can either bring a downfall or turn into a silver lining for change. For Noble Park table-tennis star Heming Hu, who recently represented Australia at the Rio Olympics in 2016, the journey has been agonizing but well worth it. “When I was about 15 or 16, I had my first youth Olympic trials,” he said. “I unfortunately missed out on making the Australian team by just one spot, essentially one point, and I really struggled to deal with that failure. “At the time, I viewed it more as a failure than a potential stepping stone because it was always a childhood dream to play in the Olympics in some form of sport. “I eventually came back when I was around 17, 18 and I just kept going and pushing myself and I was able to represent Australia. “I fell in love with the game because there are so many different elements about it - what made you a good player was through so many different ways,” he said. “The feeling of winning in this sport is very good and much different than any other sport.” But Hu doesn’t plan on stopping and is currently overseas continuing to improve his game and make it professionally. “I am currently here in Germany playing fulltime table tennis for a club called SV Union Velbert,” he said. “I came here straight from the Rio Olympic Games to try and improve my standard. “Here in Germany, it is around four to five hours of training a day, two sessions, on most days.” While Hu concedes that table-tennis in Australia is just a hobby sport and that has made his journey a little bit more difficult, he strongly believes the future is truly bright. “The future in Australia is good - there is a lot of young players coming through which is good but for me it all depends on how much time we can spend overseas because here is where most of the improvement and exposure is,” he said.
day, I was pretty tired and I was too sore for the next game anyway,” he said. “Dad said it just wasn’t possible to play both and it’s up to you – we sat down and had probably a half-hour chat and decided I enjoyed footy more so I chose that.” It’s a decision that has paid off for the young man, who always dreamt about playing AFL football. “As a little kid I always loved footy and being a Hawks fan I loved watching Buddy Franklin play, and I guess it’s something I’ve always aspired to do. “When I go to bed and put my head on the pillow, it’s something I just constantly think about.” But it’s a current Hawk champion that Battle models his game on. “Being a Hawks fan and going to most games, I really love watching Jack Gunston and he is someone I look up to and someone I model my game on,” he said. Looking ahead to next month’s AFL draft, Battle admits it is on his mind a lot, and knows that it’s almost out of his hands where he ends up next. “I guess it’s an exciting time for all draft prospects, but I try not to think about it but it’s always in the back of my mind,” he said. But the National Draft is a lottery, and Battle fully understands the possibility of having to relocate interstate. “It would obviously be hard to move away from home and family,” he said. “I’m really close to my brother Nick and he’s, basically, my best mate but, in saying that, I’ve wanted this for so long and if the opportunity arises, I’d be happy to go anywhere.”
National match pair selected By Nicholas Creely
Noble Park table-tennis star Heming Hu is currently in Germany.
Cricket Victoria has announced its final 13-man squads for both the Country and Metro sides competing at this year’s National Championships in Adelaide. Dandenong duo Ryan Quirk and Edward Newman are part of the squad which will play 5-15 December against some of the best young talent in the country. Those who have been selected will prepare for the carnival throughout November through their regular club cricket fixtures, skills sessions, as well as a three-day camp in Geelong. State Talent Manager Andrew Lynch is pleased with the squad he has assembled and can’t wait to see what the young cricketers can produce. “It was tough to narrow it down to 13 for both Country and Metro, but we’re thrilled with the make-up of the squads this year,” he said. “I know the boys are all excited, too. They’ve been training hard and cannot wait to get on the park in Adelaide.” Quirk, a young all-rounder from Narre Warren South, is developing nicely in Dandenong’s second XI, and recently struck 51 in Dandenong’s match against FitzroyDoncaster. Newman, hailing from Black Rock, is a talented top-order batsman, who has cracked into the Panthers first XI, and made a brilliant 71 not-out in Round 4. In addition to the Under 19 squads, a Cricket Australia Under-17 XI will also compete at the championships. “It’s also great to see four of our younger guys picked to play for the CA Under-17 XI, which is reward for all their hard work and consistent performances,” Lynch said. Coup in the city as Munro signs By Nicholas Creely Dandenong City has secured a major coup signing Stuart Munro as its coach for next season. The NPL2 club is now the third south-east club Munro has coached, having previously had stints as coach of the Dandenong Thunder and Oakleigh Cannons. These two stints were highly successful with Munro leading the Thunder to the 2009 VPL minor premiership and the Cannons to the 2006 VPL minor premiership. The 54-year-old is a former Scottish professional footballer and a highly rated manager. After his stunning career spanning almost two decades, Munro left to live in Australia and has gone down the coaching path ever since. During 2011-13, Munro was an assistant coach at A-League club Perth Glory before he returned to the Thunder as its technical director in the newly formed NPL. Munro then left the Thunder and took on the senior coaching position at newly formed women’s club Southern United. The signing of Munro is going to lift City into a strong position to push for promotion from NPL 2 into the top tier of Victorian football. The club has also announced Tommy Pondeljak as Munro’s right-hand man. Poneljak has played at a very high level, featuring both in the A-League and NSL throughout his playing career. In other NPL 2 news, the Thunder has lost Huss Skendevoric to the A-League club Adelaide United, where he will head up the youth development and women’s football programs. This leaves the Thunder in search of a new senior coach for the 2017 NPL2 season. However, the Thunder continues to bring good news in terms of player signings. Former Socceroo/Bundesliga/English Premier League and A-League veteran Simon Colosimo has put pen to paper for a second season. The 37-year-old defender will continue to add

Thunder Media Director Nait Ragipi told the club’s website that the signing of Colosimo will benefit the club both on and off-field. “Everything he brings to the club is done with the utmost professionalism and sincerity,” he said.
“He is not just a fantastic player with a huge history behind him, he is a true gentleman and a role model to the youth and upcoming talent around the club, who learn from him and try to emulate him both on and off the pitch. “What he brings to a club is more valuable gold, and we are very fortunate in having a living
footballing legend at our club. “We’re both proud and humble Shime feels as passionate about our club as we are about having him.” The re-commitment of Colosimo comes off the other boom signing by the Thunder, when star striker Brandon Barnes decided to stay on at the club last week.

Prowling Panthers pull another rabbit out of the hat By Nick Creely VIC PREMIER - ROUND 6 REVIEW DANDENONG has put last week’s debacle behind it, defeating Kingston Hawthorn by three wickets in a tight clash at Walter Galt Reserve on Saturday. After day one was washed out due to a burst water pipe on a perfect Melbourne day, the Panthers were a team on a mission, knowing all too well the importance of maintaining their momentum in the early parts of the season. As the game was a two-dayer, the Panthers knew they had to pull a rabbit out of the hat to walk away with the points. The Hawks opted to bat in overcast conditions, looking to bat the Panthers out of the game. But despite a sparkling century from Hawks opener Ben Slater (105), the Panthers dominated with the ball, ramping up the pressure in the fiery innings, leaving the Hawks with just 193 in total. Justin Butterfield (4/23) was at his destructive best, removing the top three batsman and bowl-

The spearhead was well backed up by the reliable Peter Cassidy (3/31), James Nanopoulos (1/41) and UK spinner Callum Parkinson (1/42), who all troubled the Hawks in contrasting ways. The Hawks would of have been counting their lucky stars that James Pattinson did not bowl,

with the tall Victorian quick still reduced to being a batsman as he progresses in his return from injury. With only around 45 overs left in the day to chase down 194, the Panthers destructive opening pair of Brett Forsyth (20) and Tom Donnell (32) got them off to a perfect start, reaching 47 quite quickly. But both openers fell 11 runs apart to the bowling of Matt Worsnop, leaving the Panthers in a precarious 2/58. Lincoln Edwards then stepped up for his new club, clipping an elegant and entertaining 83 not out, combining with Nanopolous (16), Pattinson (15) and Parkinson (19) for a series of vital partnerships. This is not the first time Edwards has played a match-winning knock - back in round two the left-handed recruit made 70 not out in the Panthers win over Monash Tigers. The Panthers reached the total seven wickets down and 38.1 overs into their innings, keeping their unbeaten start to the season going.

DDCA ROUND 3 - DAY TWO REVIEW IT was an incredible day of Turf 1 cricket on Saturday, with contenders such as North Dandenong announcing themselves, a thrilling tie between HSD and Buckley Ridges and an inspiring come from behind victory by Dingley just one of many stories to come out of the weekend. North Dandenong skipper Jergen Andersen deserves a special mention for his astonishing 9/79 with the ball, leading his side to a crucial victory over struggling Narre Warren. Cranbourne has followed on from its day one dominance, crushing Dandenong West to the tune of 169 runs in their clash at Greaves Reserve. The reigning premiers were destructive, brutalizing the Bulls with the bat and out-classing them with the ball. After the Eagles posted a whopping 7/343 last week, off the back of a mammoth century by skipper Steven Spoljaric, it was always going to be a tough ask for the Bulls to chase down the total against the champs. However, weather threatened to be the winner early in the contest, after a bout of heavy rain swept the ground only 30 minutes into the first session, forcing the players off the ground before play resumed and the Eagles swooped. And the Bulls never recovered from a shaky first session, languishing at 5/72, a daunting 271 runs shy of victory. But a solid partnership between Adam Mason (47) and Sam Weir (25) ensured the Bulls would reach a respectable 174 at the close of play. Despite the heavy loss, the Bulls had some solid performers, such as skipper Greg Siwes (39) and Ethan French (30), who battled hard at the start of the innings despite wickets tumbling at an alarming rate. The Eagles spread the load with the ball, with Tim Fathers taking three, skipper Spoljaric, Josh Dinger and Nivin Sathyajith taking two and Cameron Kelly taking one.
