Tim on mission By Jesse Graham MONDAY, 31 October was a huge day for Billanook Ward councillor Tim Heenan, marking his official return to the council chambers after four years. After being defeated by Maria McCarthy in 2012, 5179 votes to 3878, Cr Heenan clinched victory in this year’s election with a margin of 742 votes, with both he and Ms McCarthy receiving over 5000 votes after preferences. Speaking to the Mail on Friday, 4 November, Cr Heenan said he was “now trying to pick up the pieces” and take stock of where the council had headed in the four years he was absent. “Four years is a long time, and a lot changed,” he said. “I’m trying to understand where my priorities need to lie, first, for the ratepayers.” He said he and his fellow councillors, including returned Chirnside councillor Richard Higgins and new Chandler councillor Tony Stevenson, would be working with “gusto”, with two council meetings to run before the end of the year. Though he said it was a hard campaign to return - particularly in reaching out to new areas affected by boundary redistribution - Cr Heenan said he was now able to “step out of the bubble” of being a councillor after his time out of council. “One of the main things I would have done last time here is try to step out of the bubble and see it from the perspective of ratepayers, which I thought I was doing, but sometimes, you can take your foot off the ball and things are happening on the inside and you can get caught up in it all,” he said. “The bureaucracy that exists in every level of government in Australia is stifling to some people - and it doesn’t need to be - we’re here for them. “I’ve been elected to represent the ratepayers for four years - I am now public property for four years.” Cr Heenan said his “first cab off the rank” would be advocating to finish the Yarra Ranges Regional Athletics Facility in Morrisons Reserve, Mount Evelyn - sealing the car park, addressing drainage and seeking funding for a larger pavilion.
Billanook Ward Councillor Tim Heenan making a speech at the council election declaration on 31 October. 161295 “It might not be pretty, sealing a car park ... but it’s part of the commitment that council made to the Yarra Ranges Athletics people all those years ago,” he said. “I’m going to bloody keep the commitment we made to them, that’s first cab off the rank.” He said he and the new councillors would be receiving advice about the redevelopment of council’s Anderson
Street office, with the former council endorsing the first stages of the $28 million project. The Mail reported in May that other options - such as a $22.5 million and $18 million redevelopment, or $6.5 million in works to get the building up to code - were on the table, but not endorsed by councillors. Cr Heenan said he would not support the $28 million option, and would
try to oppose the “gold-plated option”. “I believe there’s still an opportunity,” he said. “I know that we will be brought up to speed on all the details of the build - I believe that something’s coming back to councillors before the end of the year.” Having served two years as mayor and a year as deputy mayor in his previous seven-year council stint, Cr

Heenan said he would not run for mayor this year. One thing he made very clear, though, was that it was good to be back. “It’s an honour, again,” he said. “I’m so grateful that the people have given me another chance to represent them, and I’m going to make sure that I remember that every day I’m in the job.”

Burnham learnin’ By Peter Douglas THE Burnham Beeches Preservation Group is encouraging residents to learn more about the historic site’s redevelopment at a public meeting on Thursday, 10 November. Due to be held at 7.30pm at the Ferny Creek Recreation Reserve, the meeting aims to educate citizens concerned over the revised planning permit, which celebrity chef Shannon Bennett and development partner Adam Garrison have put forward. Presently, Yarra Ranges Shire ratepayers have the chance to provide feedback on planning scheme amendment C143, and a concurrent planning permit, which will enable the development of a hotel and resort at the site. The Burnham Beeches Preservation Group was set up after the initial plan called for the construction of dozens of villas on-site. Though a revised permit has now been submitted, group member Rick Wall said there still were concerns over increased usage. “While the amended plan has dropped the villas, there are still concerns about traffic flows with the new facility expected to attract hundreds of vehicles,” he said. “The timing of the mansion works and other issues, such as the impact of a private development on the Alfred Nicholas Gardens, (are a concern).” In October last year, a negotiated licence between Parks Victoria and the owners of Burnham Beeches angered a

The licence agreement will allow Burnham Beeches patrons use of the main entrance of the Alfred Nicholas Gardens, which Parks Victoria says is safer than the existing access point into the historic property. However, Parks Victoria Acting District Manager, Matthew Hoogland, played down concerns over increased traffic, as a result of any future development at the site. Mr Wall said the group was not completely against the redevelopment, but just wanted the community to be educated and able to provide appropriate feedback. “(We’re) not attempting to block the redevelopment but want to ensure local concerns are taken into account,” he said. “Their Piggery Cafe is already operating on the site
which, if the plans go ahead, will also boast a brewery, restaurant, provedore and an area for music concerts and markets. “The ‘jewel in the crown’ is the complete refurbishment of the historic Burnham Beeches mansion which will become a six-star hotel.” Residents with planning queries are urged to submit them via the Burnham Beeches Preservation Group website at www.burnhambeechespreservationgroup.wordpress.com. The questions will then be forwarded to Yarra Ranges Shire, with the answers to be discussed in detail at the community meeting. Meanwhile, submissions for the amendment to Yarra Ranges Shire close at 5pm on Tuesday, 22 November. The application is now on public exhibition. More details at www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au.

In solemn remembrance By Peter Douglas DANDENONG Ranges’ RSL sub-branches and communities are preparing to remember Australia’s Diggers who died while serving their country. On Friday, 11 November, services will be held throughout the region, including at the Emerald Cenotaph in Main Street at 10.45am. Afterwards, those present will be encouraged to participate in the Anzac Walk, which celebrates 32 young men from the township who lost their lives in World War I. To complement this year’s
services, 12 students from Emerald Secondary College will present a talk that showcases their experiences while tackling the Kokoda Track. The students will address the community and RSL members at the Emerald RSL at 6pm on Thursday, 10 November. The students completed the track in September last year, thanks to their own fund-raising activities and assistance from the Emerald RSL. Vice-principal at Emerald Secondary College, Mike Jaremczuk, said the Emer-
ald RSL and president Peter Maloney were instrumental in helping the students to achieve their goal. Meanwhile, Dandenong Ranges RSL will be conducting a service at 10.40am at the Village Green (corner of Mountain Highway and Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, Sassafras). Sassafras Primary School students will be in attendance, with a guest speaker from HMAS Cerberus. Later that evening, the sub-branch will host an event to celebrate the renovations of its premises.

School makes a fine drop MOUNT Lilydale Mercy College is proud to have launched the release of its 2015 Mount Lilydale Mercy College McAuley Park Cabernet. To help mark the occasion, Secretary for Tourism, Major Events and Regional Victoria, Danielle Green, visited the school to celebrate the launch on 14 October. In 2000, eight rows of Cabernet Sauvignon were planted, with as many as 300 bottles being produced each year. In 2015, the first wine, the 2014 vintage, was sold to the public at a successful launch. This was held in conjunc-
tion with Tourism Network Yarra Valley, who sponsored a scholarship at the school. The 2014 win won bronze at the Eltham Amateur Wine Show, with the school involvement in the project continuing gto grow. This year, 40 Year 10 and 11 students have been involved in the growing, harvesting and production of the wine. Tourism Network Yarra Valley again has sponsored this event and Secretary Mary Wiking presented the school with a $1000 cheque, which will assist one or more students to achieve their goals in tourism.

By Victoria Stone-Meadows MOUNT Evelyn chainsaw carving artist Brandon Kroon has transformed an old cypress tree on the Tooradin foreshore. The City of Casey last year ruled the tree dangerous after it dropped limbs near the car park and picnic area over the past few years. The Tooradin Foreshore Committee decided that the tree stump shouldn’t go to waste and contracted a chainsaw artist to turn the leftover stump into something special. Mr Kroon was contracted to do the work. Both the artist and the foreshore committee worked on a design to reflect the history of the area. “The foreshore committee wanted something that reflected the strong fishing tradition of Tooradin,” Mr Kroon said. “After a bit of back and forth, we decided on a design that shows an old-style fisherman battling with a snapper and a pelican among the waves.” Mr Kroon spent just seven days working on the sculpture, which was completely weather-sealed last month.

Police nab drug drivers, some twice THREE drivers will be fronting court after being caught under the influence of drugs by Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol police on Wednesday 2 November. One driver, who decided to push his luck, was caught twice in less than three hours. At 2.45pm a 39-year-old Ringwood man was intercepted by police and tested positive to methamphetamines/MDMA in his system.
At 3.29pm a 23-year-old Croydon man tested positive to the same drugs, and was found to not be displaying P-plates, did not have his licence on him and did not have an interlock fitted to his car as legally required. At 6.33pm a 54-year-old Croydon man was intercepted after disobeying a red arrow and tested positive to the same drugs.
The Croydon man was spotted again at 8.56pm speeding in Chirnside Park when police realised it was the same driver. He underwent a second drug test which also returned positive. All the drivers will be charged on summons with traffic offences with the Croydon man to be charged with disobeying a lawful direction by a police officer.

Prepare for heat IT’S a timely reminder that the hot weather and the fire season are just around the corner; and not to be fooled by the recent unseasonal rain and mild conditions. Like humans, pets can suffer from a range of problems after exposure to the sun or high temperatures. Dehydration can result from prolonged exposure to the sun, especially if access to water is limited. In extreme heat, animals can also suffer from heat stress; while for fairer pets, sunburn can also be a painful aftermath of too much sun. Older pets fare better, for the change in temperature as the colder months can be tough on those with arthritis or aching joints. However, as the barometer climbs, we must plan for the hotter months ahead. Pets are very prone to heat stress. Unlike humans, dogs and cats sweat

aid Mark Menze Animal Aid CEO
very little. This means the way in which they can lose excess heat from their body is limited. They rely instead on panting to help them cool down, but this isn’t a particularly effective method. The most common cause of heat stress in dogs is being shut in cars. Even when the windows are open slightly, on a mild day, temperatures inside a car can rise rapidly.
On hot days, temperatures can reach dangerous levels within minutes, and many dogs have died from being shut in hot cars even for short periods of time. Other contributing factors of heat stress on hot days occur, where an animal has limited or no access to shade and water. Excessive exercise on hot days can also contribute to heat stress. Early signs of heat stress include anxiety, panting, and excessive salivation. As the problem worsens, the animal may become disorientated, and vomiting can occur. Severe heat stress can cause seizures, collapse, and death. Finally, remember to include your pets as part of your bushfire plan. For further details on preparing your pets this summer, visit animalaid.org.au or call the Animal Aid Veterinary Clinic on (03) 9739 0500.

Cars keep dropping in By Peter Douglas BELGRAVE resident Lola Diaz is fearful a car may ‘missile’ into her kitchen after three near misses in recent times. In a third incident, and the second in just over a year, a car has slipped over an embankment along the Belgrave-Hallam Road in wet conditions and tumbled with great force down Ms Diaz’s front garden. Thankfully, tree stumps stopped the momentum and no-one was seriously injured. However, the frequency of these incidents has left Ms Diaz extremely fearful and anxious, which has previously prompted her to call on VicRoads to install barriers along that particular stretch of road. But no action has been taken. “I would normally be gardening out the front on that day, but I’m glad that I didn’t,” she said. “If that stump hadn’t have stopped the car, it would’ve come through like a missile into our house. “When I saw the car, it was absolutely terrifying - I didn’t know whether the driver was in the car or even alive.” The road in question is a section of Belgrave-Hallam Road, just up from Kaola Street heading towards Belgrave South. The road runs above her property, which is situated in a gully with a steep incline that leads into her house. The incline is effectively her front garden and she enjoys maintaining the area. Although there have been barriers installed along a nearby sharp bend, there is nothing along the stretch that runs above several properties. Ms Diaz said she was not alone in expressing fears over the dangerous roads
Workers retrieve a trailer after the crash 161464 in the area. She feels she has a duty of care to both her neighbours and drivers on the road, because she believes one day they won’t be so lucky. “VicRoads has told me there have not been any deaths on that road and they won’t be installing barriers,” she said. “But, I’m wondering what it will take for them to take notice. “It’s a dangerous road, particularly in the wet. “We need to consider the benefits for the drivers, if there were barriers. “They wouldn’t plunge with huge force over an embankment, then encounter barriers such as trees before landing.” The 'Mail’ has sought comment from VicRoads and will endeavour to publish a response.

MELBOURNE’S fitness fanatics are set for a shock as the ever-popular 1000 Steps gets set to close in the next few weeks. The Ferntree Gully Kokoda Track Memorial Walk is to close for upgrading and maintenance works for three weeks from Monday 14 November, though some access will be available. Walkers will still be able to access the summit of One Tree Hill from the Ferntree Gully picnic ground via Lyrebird Track and return to the picnic ground via Link Track, Belview Terrace and School Track. Parks Victoria Area Chief Ranges Matt Hoogland said the works will improve the condition of the walk. “(This will) ensure the 1000 Steps ... continues to be safe and accessible for the half a million plus visitors who tackle the track each year,” he said. “The temporary closure of the 1000 Steps track provides a great opportunity for walkers to try something new and explore the many other walking tracks in the Dandenong Ranges National Park and other parks they may not be aware of.” Mr Hoogland said some of the great parks include the National Rhododendron Gardens, Silvan Reservoir, George Tindale Gardens, RJ Hamer Arboretum and the Pirianda Gardens. “These parks not only offer a change of scenery but they are also quite spectacular at this time of year, as the gardens transition into their spring colours,” he said. The works are expected to be completed by Friday 2 December, pending favourable conditions. For more information on alternate walking tracks and the Dandenong Ranges National Park, contact Parks Victoria on 13 1963 or visit www. parks.vic.gov.au.

Doctor Strange (M) Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelsen
By Kath Gannaway FANS of The Sunny Cowgirls can expect some classic ‘Cowgirls’, and more, when the popular duo make their way back to the York on Lilydale on 3 December. Sisters, Sophie and Celeste Clabburn, are mainstays of the Australian country music scene having released their eighth studio album “Here We Go”, in September. The album kicked off another Australian tour and Sophie told the Mail they couldn’t wait to get back to the Yarra Valley. “Every time we’ve played The York it’s been a crazy night,” Sophie said. “We’ve played there three or four times and we just love it. “We’re looking forward to it.” Sophie said growing up on the farm in Dunkeld in Western Victoria was where it all began, influenced by their guitar-playing dad who wrote his own songs about working on the farm and the different characters he met. The girls, eight-time Golden Guitar nominees, followed suit immortalising their experiences working as roustabouts and farmhands, in their debut album ‘Little Bit Rusty’. While the new album takes them back to their roots in terms of music, Sophie says it also reflects their ‘growing up’. “Our songs are drawn from real life experience ... just from growing up and different life experiences,” she said. “Celeste did a stint in the Territory and has done a few songs out of that, and I’m recently married, so there are a couple of songs out of that. “Life is always changing, always growing, so there are always new songs on the horizon.” Country music new-comer, Jemma Beech will open the show who, like the Cowgirls, sings about country people, the land and the lifestyle. Be warned, the girls are travelling with a full band and Sophie says they will be expecting their audience to do more than just a bit of foot-tapping. “We’ll be expecting everyone to get up, have a dance, enjoy the music and just have a fun night out,” she said. The Sunny Cowgirls will be at The York on Lilydale, Swansea Road, Mount Evelyn, on Saturday, 3 December. Tickets available at www.yorkonlilydale.com.au/shows.

THE Marvel Cinematic Universe goes full fantasy in Doctor Strange. Talented neurosurgeon Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) loses the use of his hands in a car accident, and begins studying magic at a Nepalese academy. Meanwhile, a corrupted master threatens to bring an ancient evil to Earth. Doctor Strange is the best Marvel film since the first Avengers movie. Though the second act feels somewhat rushed, Doctor Strange does an outstanding job of balancing Strange’s personal journey, in which he sets aside his ego to embrace a greater cause, with the looming mystical threat. As such, the film is consistently compelling, but also has witty humour, excellent character development all around and a refreshing note of moral ambiguity. The MCU has long been derided for its weak villains – with the exception of Loki – and veteran Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen is now a new exception as Caecilius. This wayward student of the mystical arts is sinister and gleefully cruel yet soft-spoken, dignified and charismatic. The action is dazzlingly vibrant and energetic, warping both space and time in beautiful ways, and the climax contains a brilliant act of temporal trickery that must be seen to be believed. Taking a tried-andtrue formula and infusing it with endless visual imagination and fantastic character writing, Doctor Strange is another triumph for the MCU. – Seth Lukas Hynes

HISTORY AND CHARM
KALLISTA
WELCOME to “Grantulla” one of the oldest homesteads in Kallista filled with history, magical charm and character. “Grantulla” was built in 1895 and has been updated with great care to retain its original features such as high ceilings, beautiful wood panelling, leadlighting, double hung windows and hardwood floors, and sits on four acres of flat, stunning Edna Walling style gardens. Originally used as a guest house then as a children’s summer camp, it makes the perfect home for young families as there are slides, a swimming pool, trampolines and a mini-golf course. On the other hand the property could be used for a myriad of business ventures, perhaps a wedding venue or B&B, subject to approvals. It has two main living areas, seven bedrooms and three bathrooms. The main kitchen is gorgeous with pressed metal adorning the walls, plus a wood stove and rustic timber cupboards as well as a modern free-standing oven with gas cook top and stainless-steel dishwasher. The large family and dining areas are kept warm in the cooler months with your choice of a mains gas log fire or wood heater, and the formal lounge is complemented by an open fireplace.

Online abuse is slammed By Peter Douglas

worrying trend,” he said. “People with fake accounts can remain anonymous and it’s a very real problem.” Unlike many others, Mr Battin and his staff actively engage with his online management. “You try to not let it get to you, but sometimes it’s difficult to switch off,” he said. “There are times when I go home and speak to my wife about what’s been written online.

Big bucks for SES truck
Opposition emergency services spokesman and MP for Gembrook Brad Battin says online abuse is a growing social problem. 157590
By Jodie Symonds
“I encourage our office to speak openly about online comments.” One of his staff said she had once spent half a day cleaning up comments on the MP’s Facebook page and that it was not unusual for her to sit up at night and monitor posts. Mr Battin said the negative comments have little real effect on decision-making, suggesting detailed communications and advocacy are much better options.
IN RECOGNITION of the hard work the Emerald SES does for the community, the Emerald Lions Club presented a $20,000 cheque to go toward a new truck. The cheque was given to Emerald SES at the Grow It Bake It Make It community market in Emerald on Sunday 6 November. Emerald Lions Club Membership chairman Ray Spencer said the SES was chosen to be
the recipient of the cheque in recognition of their hard and constant work throughout the Dandenong Ranges. “They’re really instrumental to our community with the work they do,” Mr Spencer said. “Fallen trees, road rescues, and trauma - they really see it all. “They’re also a really lovely bunch of people.” The $20,000 came from a trust the Emerald Lions Club had, which mainly goes toward youth rescue.

“We would love to do more for the SES, but it’s hard to raise the money,” Mr Spencer said. “It’s really a pleasure to be working with people like those in the SES.” Mr Spencer said the Grow It Bake It Make It market had a great turnout, and Emerald SES sold a record number of sausages at their sausage sizzle. “They were flat out,” he said. The market is run by the Emerald Lions Club, and is held on the first Sunday of every month, except January.

GEMBROOK MP Brad Battin has said that online abuse in a political environment is becoming a major problem in the community, with its effects increasingly impacting on his office over the past two years. Mr Battin’s comments come after a series of incidents during which posters targeted politicians and businesses to further their own agenda. Last month South Belgrave Home and Hardware and an Upwey hair salon were targeted through a Facebook page that encouraged supporters to boycott their business because they supported CFA volunteers over the ongoing enterprise bargaining dispute. Yarra Ranges Council election candidate Chelsea McNab was also targeted in two vicious comments on an anti-Greens page saying she should be kicked, sent to the Middle East and decapitated. Ms McNab’s O’Shannassy Ward rival at the time, Jim Child, described the attack as “absolutely outrageous”, and also said that he had been the victim of comments. Mr Battin said while mostly he ignored the comments, some could be upsetting. “Social media has become a bullying mechanism and it’s a

Tigers salute in full By Steve Brown FTGDCA THE Belgrave and Upwey-Tecoma cricket clubs paid tribute to the significance of Armistice Day when they clashed in Round 4 of the Reeves Shield at the weekend. The brainchild of both clubs, in conjunction with the Upwey/Belgrave RSL, a traditional ceremony was held and commemorative stumps were used and will be presented to the RSL upon completion of the game. A nice touch was the red poppy worn by both teams on specially made uniforms. Belgrave President, Johnathon Levell, said it was a fantastic initiative. “Both clubs decided that we would honour Remembrance Day and requested an annual fixture between the clubs during that particular weekend,” he said. “The clubs assembled last Thursday at the RSL where we announced the teams and we have invited RSL members to an afternoon tea during the game next week, with a special dinner at Upwey following the match. “This is more than just a game of cricket.” The Upwey Tigers batted first and lost a wicket second ball of the day before in-form batsman Chris Jewell (87) and Quentin Wells combined for a 139-run partnership. Wells was extremely brutal on anything pitched short and on one occasion blasted a ball onto the roof of the Upwey Bowling Club. The former Lysterfield batsman
was dismissed in the first over after the tea break for 53. Darren Spence also contributed 64 as the Tigers pushed on to 9/299 at stumps in what should be a winning score. Off-spinner Ben Carnell had the ball coming out nicely to take 3/40 for the Magpies. Ferntree Gully got off to a flyer against Eildon Park with openers Mark Teofilo (74) and Josh Henry giving the Panthers’ bowlers a touch-up. After Jayden Bradbury contributed 87, the Blues were on track for a sub300 total but, to the Panther’s credit, they fought back taking the last wicket in the final over of the day and will be chasing 290. Last season’s grand final replay between Knoxfield and The Basin is evenly poised with Knoxfield posting 201. Opener Adith Sundaresh, having his best season, top scored with 52 and received support from the experienced Tom Boxell (48) and Jack Taylor 31. Scott Vozzo was the pick of the bowlers with 3/22. At stumps, the Huntsmen were 1/24 with Ronnie Heskes back in the pavilion. Knox Gardens playing Upper Gully at Kings Park were rescued by skipper Jarrod Butcher as the top order failed against the Kings attack. Butcher was dismissed for a fine 80; however, at 6/177 the Falcons looked a little unsteady. Matt Young replaced Butcher and played a top hand down the order with
some smart hitting and his 67 not out was vital in reaching 9/281 at the close of play, giving the Kings some work to do next week. Monbulk should open their account after registering 8/260 at home to Mt Gate. Muhammad Shinwari with 46, and a half century to Azir Alam, has placed the Hawks in a winning position. Healesville to host first greyhound day THE wider Victorian community of greyhound owners and their pets are invited to Healesville on Saturday, 12 November, for the first ever Greyhound Family Fun Day. The day will celebrate all things greyhound with dog-friendly activities including dog washing, vet checks and educational talks as well as a walk around the stunning Healesville Greyhound Racing Track property.
Families are also catered for with a free barbecue, ice-creams, giveaways and an endless amount of activities for the kids. The Greyhound Family Fun Day isn’t just for Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) pets, as all breeds are welcome. Non-green collar greyhounds are required to be muzzled and all dogs are to be kept on the lead. Fee tickets are
strictly limited and can be booked by going to gap.grv.org.au. In 2015-’16, a record 895 greyhound adoptions were made through Greyhound Racing Victoria’s GAP. With more and more people choosing to take on greyhounds as pets, a burgeoning community has evolved. GAP Manager Larissa Darragh said there was little wonder greyhounds were becoming increasingly popular
as pets. “They really are friendly, affectionate and lazy dogs who don’t require a lot of exercise,” Ms Darragh said. “We love the fact that people are taking them on as pets and we believe putting on a fun day like this is the perfect way for these beautiful re-homed greyhounds and their owners to come together and enjoy each other’s company.”

By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS YARRA Ranges Athletics' attention was split this weekend with many of the athletes competing at the Victoria All Schools Championships held at a cold, wind-swept, Lakeside Stadium. After day two of the three-day championship club members had won 11 medals including two gold to Lateisha Willis and Georgia Laven. The windy conditions meant sprinters and jumpers recorded personal bests, however, the middle distance events were very tactical races with fast times hard to come by. Results for club members after two days: Under 18 Girls 5000m Walk Final - Emily Noonan second 30.15.55; Under 18 Girls 5000m Walk Final - Lee Taylor fifth 36.53.99; Under 15 Girls 100m Heat - Chelsea Thompson third 12.64; Under 16 Boys 100m Heat - Patrick Keating sixth 12.43; Under 15 Girls 1500m Heat - Georgia Laven first 5.18.44; Under 16 Girls 1500m Final - Lily Peacock third 5.04.52; Under 14 Boys 1500m Heat - Samuel Norton second 4.53.25; Under 14 Boys 1500m Heat - Zachariah Clarke fourteenth 5.32.36; Under 16 Boys 1500m Final - Harry Norman ninth 4.33.36; Under 14 Girls 400m Heat - Olivia De Vincentis fifth 65.55; Under 16 Boys Javelin Final - Cameron Brown fourth 28.30m - Under 14 Boys Triple Jump Final Tayleb Willis third 11.53m; Under 14 Boys 200m Hurdles Heat - Tayleb Willis first 29.98; Under 17 Girls 100m Heat - Lateisha Willis first 12.18. By Dennis Fuller EMERALD GOLF ALL members who have won a Monthly Medal at Emerald Golf Club turned up to vie for the title of ‘Medallist of Medallists’. A fine array of golfers fronted with expectations, and abilities not always in accord. When all the cards came in, there was a good amount of scratching and rumination with countbacks and forward somersaults all taken into account. These activities decided that it was Mark Starick (13) who was the winner and walked away with that coveted title. This also means that he will represent the club when he takes on all other winners of the same gong in early December. The November VGL medal was also there for the taking. There were four players who all managed a nett score of 67. After the slide rule had
Georgia Laven, centre, has taken home two gold at the championships. 155151 up to help with the many tasks that need to be done so our little athletes can enjoy a morning of athletics fun. The cool, windy conditions did not deter the sea of smiling faces from running, jumping and throwing. The club looks forward to seeing everyone - athletes and parents - all back again next Saturday. It will be a big day for the club next weekend as it hosts a round of AV Shield immediately after the conclusion of the Saturday morning athletics. The club will be grateful for any members and parents who can help with set up
and pack up during the day, anytime from 8am for littlies set-up to 6pm for pack up and all times in between. Thankfully, everyone will get to relax afterwards as Sophie and the events team hold the trivia and karaoke night from 7.30pm. If you have not booked a table yet, get your friends and neighbours together for a fun social night out and support the club's major fundraising event of the year. There will also be plenty of seats at tables if you are flying solo. For information, visit yarrarangesathletics.org.au or check out the Facebook page.
been waved over the cards, it emerged that Peter Jones (23) is now the proud owner of the November medal on a countback from Starick, Ben Balfour (22) and Ross Martin (14). Ian Cranston came in with a nett 68 while Ian Scott and Phillip Crossley both bettered their handicaps with 69. Broc Reynolds was nearest the pin on the 4th, Peter Glasscock the 7th, Mark Starick the 12th, and Ken Hill on the 13th and the pro pin 18th. Glasscock played a beautiful drive down the 9th to win the longest drive. The ladies’ Medallist of Medallists was won by a triumphant Kendra Sumsion from a disappointed Brianna McCoy. Wednesday’s Onerously Foppish Golf (OFG) was a stroke event which suited Moss Fuller down to earth as he won in a canter with a nett score of 67 with his nearest rival Seppy Krummenacher three strokes back on 70.

Holden celebrates the first Astra off the line. 161477
High-tech at a low price first all-new Holden Astra built and ready to ship - it’s a stunning car, packed with state-of-the-art technology, and another great example of the exciting future vehicles we will be introducing over the next couple of years. Holden has committed to replacing or refreshing every single model in our line-up as part of our plan to launch 24 new models by the end of 2020,” Mr Keley said. “Astra’s premium European design oozes quality and style, and with Australian input and extensive global testing, you can be sure it will deliver the performance and refinement Holden has built its reputation on. “Standout features including Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Alert and Active Lane Keep Assist, ensure the all-new Astra brings premium tech and polish to the segment. “Astra’s combination of state-of-theart technology, style and performance, coupled with very attractive pricing, will shake-up the small-car segment and re-
Holden celebrates the first Astra off the line. 161477 define what a Holden small car can be.” While the Astra name is long serving in Australia, the incoming Astra is all-new. Developed from a clean-sheet design under the watchful eye of Opel/Vauxhall’s Vice President - Design, Mark Adams, Astra exhibits the same sleek, ‘Sculptural Artistry meets German Preci-
sion’ design philosophy first introduced on the stunning Monza concept in 2013. Focused on blending style and efficiency, Astra is built off a new vehicle architecture that facilitates up to 130 kilograms in weight reduction while allowing the introduction of distinct styling cues. A rear floating roof design comple-
mented by a sports front fascia and grille that extends seamlessly into the front LED headlamp design, give Astra a strong and unmistakable road presence. For more details on the new Holden Astra, visit Heritage Holden at 457 Maroondah Highway, Lilydale. Phone 9735 5566.

HOLDEN has announced the high-tech, all-new Astra will soon arrive in Australia with customers able to get their hands on the 2016 European Car of the Year for as little as $25,312 drive away. Customers are urged to register their interest early by visiting Holden’s ‘Astra: Coming Soon’ webpage or by contacting their local Holden dealer. Rolling off Opel’s Gliwice production line for the first time, the all-new Holden Astra comes to Australia after receiving multiple awards and accolades in Europe thanks to its impressive blend of premium European styling, world-class driving experience and an array of hightech features. Holden Executive Director of Sales, Peter Keley, said the all-new Astra would be the next vehicle to be launched in Holden’s huge new product onslaught and offered the perfect combination of leading design, performance and technology with exceptional customer value. “It’s incredibly exciting to see the
