Retreat for help By Jesse Graham WORK on a Healesville retreat for kids with cancer will begin early next year, with almost one million dollars being raised to get the project off the ground. The Mail reported in 2014 that the Nicholas Timms Foundation, set up in memory of a boy who died from cancer at 21 months, had received council’s support in establishing a cancer retreat in Healesville. Michael Timms, Nicholas’ father and co-founder of the foundation with his wife Belinda, told the Mail last week that after “a fair bit of red tape” to change the zoning of the land, the retreat’s permits had been approved. “It’s a green light now,” he said. “We expect to start construction early next year - it won’t be completely finished next year, by the end of 2018 it should be all up and running.” In late October, volunteers Di Marsh, Ali Payne and Leona McHugh wandered Healesville to hand out pamphlets about the retreat and collecting donations for a cocktail event on Friday, 11 November at Mordialloc’s Woodlands Golf club. The event, the Nicholas Timms Foundation Magic Million Cocktail Gala, runs from 6.30pm-9.30pm and costs $110 per person for entry, or $120 for a bus pick up and return from Ringwood. Ms Marsh, Ms Payne and Ms Hughes were just some of about a dozen people volunteering for the foundation on the day, with other people helping to clear the land ahead of next year’s construction. The trio said some of the businesses they had visited had donated items to be auctioned or raffled off on the night to raise money, and to promote Healesville and the Yarra Valley to visitors. “The local traders have been very receptive and quite interested in what’s happening in their local area,” Ms Marsh said. Mr Timms said the night would be
Di Marsh, John D'Angelo, Leona McHugh and Ali Payne at the site of the retreat in Healesville. 161131 the eighth year a fund-raiser had been held for the foundation, with $928,000 raised so far - this year, and added that they were hoping to break the million dollar mark. He said the volunteers’ visit was some of the first contact between the foundation and the Healesville community, and that he hoped residents would get involved as the project got underway. “I’m hoping when we start construction, we can really get the local
people involved,” Mr Timms said. “Once we get started, we’ll be looking for supplies and tradies and whoever to get involved, so the more, the merrier.” Nicholas Timms was diagnosed with stage four malignant rhabdoid tumour (MRT), a rare childhood cancer, after his first birthday. Though he responded well to his first rounds of treatment, the tumour grew back in size, and the family was told in November 2008 that nothing

more could be done - two weeks later, he passed away. The family then set up the foundation and partnered with the charity Challenge to get the retreat underway. Once completed, the foundation will donate the retreat to the charity. The land for the retreat, at 25 Maroondah Parade, Healesville, was purchased in 2013, but the retreat faced an immediate hurdle of the land being based on Green Wedge land. In 2014, Yarra Ranges council-
lors voted unanimously in support of a planning scheme amendment to change the zoning on that block, to allow a planning application for the retreat to be submitted. Ryrie Ward councillor Fiona McAllister said at the time that the retreat was an “incredibly valuable and wonderful use” for the site, and that the community would support the proposal. For more information about the foundation or the retreat, or to offer support, visit www.teamnick.org.au or email info@teamnick.org.au.

MORE than 100 people celebrated the launch of the 2016 Toolangi Sculpture Trail project and the opening of the Yarra Valley Arts ‘Regeneration Small Sculpture Exhibition’ on Sunday, 6 November. The event heralds an exciting regeneration of community art culture in Toolangi after the closure of the Forest Discovery Centre in 2012, and 20 years after the original sculpture trail was created in 1996. Fourteen artists will be involved in the two-week residency over the next two weeks in a program that involves workshops with local school and youth groups and guided tours of the sculpture trail as a work in progress. ‘Regeneration’ features the works of artists, both local and from further afield, and is staged within the unique architecture of the recently re-opened Forest Discovery Centre. Mounted within a 50x50cm base, the sculptures provide insights into the artists’ concerns for the environment. Among a number of speakers at the opening were Taungurung elder and artist Mick Harding, Yarra Valley Arts president, Marcel Theunissen, artist Ernst Fries who was the originator of the 1996 sculpture trail, Michael Nardella chair of Kinglake Ranges Foundation, and Sharon Plummer, project manager of the Toolangi Sculpture Trail. Ms Plummer said one of the most memorable aspects of the day was having Mr Harding perform the traditional Welcome to Country smoking ceremony. “It was very significant for the project to have that cleansing of the site for everyone who is participating in and visiting the event,” Ms Plummer said. While the artists in residence start in earnest this week, Ms Plummer recommended the second week as the ideal time to walk through the trail, observe the artists at work and take a guided tour. The family day on Saturday,

Mount Eliza artist Marynes Avila with her sculpture, 'Anlagen'. 161555 12 November, includes Gould League workshops for kids, Yarning the Web with traditional weaving workshops, creation of the Community Sculpture and a Spotlight Forest Tour. Yarning the Web continues on the Sunday, along with artists’ talks and demonstrations and the Spotlight Forest Tour. The Closing Ceremony is on Sunday, 20 November with Aunty Lee Healey narrating ‘The First Taungurung Women’ accompanied by Toolangi Pri-
mary School students. The sculptures will be formally gifted to the community and the trail declared open on the day. For a full program of events visit www.toolangisculpture. com. The Regeneration Small Sculpture Exhibition is open daily from 10am to 4pm until 27 November. The Toolangi Forest Discovery Centre is at 1687 Healesville-Kinglake Road, Toolangi.

Wildlife on doorstep By Jesse Graham HEALESVILLE Sanctuary visitors will be able to go bird watching in a newly-refurbished wetlands area, after a mammoth effort to rejuvenate the area. The sanctuary’s wetlands area opened over the September school holidays, after refurbishment works started at the beginning of the year. Featuring a newly-built bird-watching hide, a re-designed wetland area and new boardwalks, the area gives visitors the chance to see birds in their habitat and observe them in a different way to other animal exhibits. Keeper Meagan Lane said the works started in January, and started with a coordinated effort to get every animal - birds and eels alike - safely out of the wetlands and into a specially-made holding area. “It was a pretty long process, it was a well-planned, well-thought-out process,” Ms Lane said. “We fed the birds in there with a funnel-trap system - it was a one-way-trap ... they could walk in, but they couldn’t walk back out.” Ms Lane said the changes to the area not only makes the birds more visible for visitors, with the old areas overgrown before the works, but gives the birds a more comfortable area to live in. “From a welfare point of view, for us as keepers, one of the things was resurfacing the water’s edge - the old exhibit had rough gravel, which we had some issues with bumblefoot in birds,” she said. “So from an animal welfare point, was getting those edges smoothed, more perching and more suitable perching in different spots as well for the same birds.” The boardwalk and bird-hide were created with reclaimed timbers and reusable decking materials, and Ms Lane said the bird-hide was proving popular with bird-

Council probes park nails By Jesse Graham COUNCIL is investigating a report of jagged metal and nails being placed around Queens Park in Healesville, after good Samaritans raised the alarm. Two Healesville residents, who asked not to be named, notified council, the police and the Mail about pieces of jagged metal and nails they spotted around Queens Park on 24 October. The people said they noticed the metal was stuck in places where people or children could have hit them by accident and cut themselves. Yarra Ranges Council’s director of Environment and Engineering Mark Varmalis said the council had been notified, and that council’s Parks and Bushlands team visited the site and removed the “debris”. “The incident is being investi-
gated,” he said. He said the team monitored parks across the Yarra Ranges, inspecting lawn areas and garden beds and collecting litter “one to two times per week”. When items like the nails are found, they are disposed of and any vandalism is reported to police, Mr Varmalis said. “Where possible, council’s litter enforcement officer will investigate who was responsible for dumping rubbish,” he said. “The Parks and Bushlands team appreciates residents contacting council. The community has the right to be safe and enjoy these spaces. “Contact the police if you spot vandalism - If the material is dangerous or sharp, contact the council on 1300 368 333 to have it removed.”
Briefly Nabbed at the wheel THREE drivers will be fronting court after being caught under the influence of drugs by the Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol on Wednesday 2 November. One driver, who decided to push his luck, was caught twice in less than three hours. At 2.45pm, a 39-yearold Ringwood man was intercepted by police and tested positive to methamphetamines/MDMA in his system. At 3.29pm, a 23-yearold Croydon man tested positive to the same drugs, and was found to not be displaying P-plates, did not have his licence on him and did not have an interlock fitted to his car as legally required. At 6.33pm, a 54-yearold Croydon man was intercepted after disobeying a red arrow, and tested positive to the same drugs. The Croydon man was spotted again at 8.56pm, speeding in Chirnside Park - when police realised it was the same driver, he underwent a second drug test, which also returned positive. All the drivers will be charged on summons with traffic offences, with the Croydon man to be charged with disobeying a lawful direction by a police officer.

A WOORI Yallock man will face court after driving his car into a tree last Wednesday and blowing more than three times the legal blood alcohol limit. Police posting on the Eyewatch - Yarra Ranges Police Service Area Facebook page said the 23-year-old Woori Yallock man ran off the road and drove into a tree just before 11pm on Wednesday 2 November. He returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.189 per cent - more than three times the legal limit of 0.05 for fully-licensed drivers. He will be charged on summons to face Ringwood Magistrates’ Court.

Prepare for heat IT’S a timely reminder that the hot weather and the fire season are just around the corner; and not to be fooled by the recent unseasonal rain and mild conditions. Like humans, pets can suffer from a range of problems after exposure to the sun or high temperatures. Dehydration can result from prolonged exposure to the sun, especially if access to water is limited. In extreme heat, animals can also suffer from heat stress; while for fairer pets, sunburn can also be a painful aftermath of too much sun. Older pets fare better, for the change in temperature as the colder months can be tough on those with arthritis or aching joints. However, as the barometer climbs, we must plan for the hotter months ahead. Pets are very prone to heat stress. Unlike humans, dogs and cats sweat very little. This means the way in which they can lose excess heat from their body is limited. They rely instead on panting to help them cool down, but this isn’t a particularly effective method.
Animal
aid Mark Menze Animal Aid CEO
The most common cause of heat stress in dogs is being shut in cars. Even when the windows are open slightly, on a mild day, temperatures inside a car can rise rapidly. On hot days, temperatures can reach dangerous levels within minutes, and many dogs have died from being shut in hot cars even for short periods of time. Other contributing factors of heat stress on hot days occur, where an animal has limited or no access to shade and water. Excessive exercise on hot days can also contribute to heat stress. Early signs of heat stress include anxiety, panting, and excessive salivation. As the problem worsens, the animal may become disorientated, and vomiting can occur. Severe heat stress can cause seizures,
collapse, and death. There are some simple steps that pet owners can take during hot weather to ensure their pets’ safety. Outdoor pets should have shade at all times, and have access to several sources of water, so that they will not run out throughout the day. Apply a pet-safe sunscreen to exposed areas for dogs and cats at risk of sunburn, especially pink noses and ears. Avoid walking or exercising dogs in the heat of the day. Early morning and late evening walks are preferable. If not at home, consider arranging for a friend or family member to check pets during the day. Finally, remember to include your pets as part of your bushfire plan. This includes ensuring that your pets are microchipped and details are current with the relevant agency; registration is up to date and preparing an emergency kit for your pets in case you need to evacuate. For further details on preparing your pets this summer, visit animalaid.org.au or call the Animal Aid Veterinary Clinic on (03) 9739 0500.

‘Stop’ risky revegetation call By Jesse Graham AN ADVOCACY group has called on DELWP to cease its revegetation along the Yarra River, citing bushfire concerns for the valley if the Yellingbo Conservation Area works continue. The Yarra Waterways Group released a report on 26 October, outlining concerns about bushfire risk in the Yellingbo Conservation Area, which stretches across the Yarra Valley. The main concerns arising from the report is the potential bushfire risk from revegetation along the Yarra River, which the group said would pose a risk to nearby residential properties in the event of a bushfire. Citing fires in previous years along riparian corridors, the group calls on the government to “immediately stop” revegetation within 200 metres of the “identified assets” in the report, including residences, until an independent bushfire risk assessment is completed. “A serious conflict exists between conservation values imposed by the Yellingbo Conservation Area and the obligation of the state to give priority to the protection of human life and assets from bushfire risks,” the report reads. Other recommendations include rolling back the boundary of the YCA, installation of access points for the CFA and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) on the Yarra River between Woori Yallock and Millgrove and restricting any future revegetation to outside 200 metres of dwellings, buildings and other public assets. Group member Peter Cochrane said that bushfire risk was a “major concern” for the group. “It doesn’t have to be a bushfire that is like Black Saturday, where you know basically concrete burns - even a
Resat Dajlan, Halit Dajlan, George Key, Jodie Cochrane, Rick Houlihan, Peter Cochrane, Geoff Cochrane with Charlie, Paul Cochrane and Tamara Picture: ROB CAREW Cochrane with Kimberly near the planting zone. 161130 small fire ... has the potential to destroy homes and kill people,” Mr Cochrane said. “It’s pretty evident that this sort of vegetation they want to plant is dangerous around homes. “The rule of thumb by all the experts is that it shouldn’t be within 200 metres - you need that space to defend property.” DELWP’s Port Phillip Regional Director Kelly Crosthwaite said the
department took bushfire risk “very seriously”. “To ensure that bushfire risk in the extended Yellingbo Conservation Area is managed effectively, our first step is to develop a bushfire management plan, that considers all risk factors and recommends mitigating actions,” Ms Crosthwaite said. “The bushfire management plan process will be community led, with involvement from DELWP, CFA,
Parks Victoria and local councils, and supported by an independent facilitator and scientific experts. “DELWP will continue to engage with the Yarra Waterways Group, and their report will be considered as part of this process and the mitigation measures identified in it will be assessed.” Ms Crosthwaite said measures would include buffer zones and access tracks, along with assessing which areas of Crown land would be reveg-
etated, and which would require fuel management works. “DELWP is also working with landholders on an individual basis to determine areas where grazing can be used as a management tool as part of a riparian management licence,” she said. Ms Crosthwaite said Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio had received the report and would be responding to it.

Portraits adorning town’s shopfronts PAINTED portraits from Upper Yarra artists are currently hanging in shopfronts around Warburton as part of a street exhibition running until 23 November. The Face2Face exhibition, organised by the Upper Yarra Community Enterprise (UYCE), features 24 portraits of Upper Yarra residents, painted by Upper Yarra residents, hanging in shopfronts around Warburton. UYCE community development worker Suyin Chan said the inaugural exhibition was inspired by Yarra Ranges Council’s Not the Archies portrait exhibition in Healesville in past years. Artists were able to pay a $5 entry fee and received a canvas, where they painted a portrait of
anyone from the Upper Yarra region. The finished portraits range from friends and family members to iconic residents and the works will hang in town until 23 November. Ms Chan said she was “really proud” of the result, and that artists ranging from primary and high school students, through to submitted works by experienced painters. “I’m just looking forward to people coming and walking the streets and having a look at the paintings,” she said. She said the event would likely be run again next year, with extra time allocated for people to complete their paintings. To see the finished works, simply take a walk through Warburton’s main street.

farming being no longer family run but conglomerates, so I thought it might be a way to work with the community and provide a safe space for reflection and sharing of things, or maybe mourning a loss of landscape,” Ms Nicholson said. From there, a large steel frame was made and each cap was strung up from the frame - it stands in the Yering Station gallery just above head-height, allowing visitors to (carefully) walk under it. From the first idea to finishing the piece, Ms Nicholson said the work took about a year to make. Ms Nicholson said there was
a contrast between the area in Gunnedah where the caps were made and the halls of Yering Station, but that the feelings behind the sculpture were “universal”. “There’s universal emotions, so although I think it’s very much of its place, it’s also talking about something that’s relevant to everybody anyway, and I’m sure this community has faced a lot of the same questions,” she said. As the winner of the awards, Ms Nicholson received a $12,000 cash prize. “It’s beautiful - it’s very helpful, because it’s not easy to make works like this, finan-
cially,” she said. Her advice for young artists was simple - stick to your intuition, and ignore people who say you should make works that fit in the back of your car. “I’ll always remember when I was at art school, one of the tutors or lecturers was saying that you should make things that fit in your car and I was outraged at the time and I still am,” Ms Nicholson said. “You shouldn’t make art for that reason - it should be about the idea, not about how you’re going to manage it.” To see the exhibition, visit Yering Station at 38 Melba Highway, Yering.

AN elaborate artwork featuring dozens of clay mourning caps has won the 16th Yarra Valley Arts and Yering Station Sculpture Awards, with works on display for the next month. The sculpture exhibition and awards opened on 23 October, featuring works by artists from around the valley and further abroad, and will close on 5 December. Abbotsford-based artist Bridget Nicholson was announced as the winner of the awards at the opening with her colossal piece, Hold, which features clay mourning caps inspired by a New South Wales Aboriginal story. She said that she went to Gunnedah in New South Wales, and saw an Aboriginal mourning cap, which were made by women when their husbands died as a part of the mourning process. “At the time, my mother was dying, so I experimented on myself and I just found that the physical sensation was lovely it was sort of grounding and reassuring and quite comforting,” Ms Nicholson said. After meeting with Elders to get their blessing for the project, Ms Nicholson met with Aboriginal women in the area and made the caps over four months, before having them fired in a kiln and marked with the name of its wearer. “A lot of the conversations had been about change in the community, change to the environment, mining coming in,

I AM wondering who, or what organisation, and what motivations, are behind the recent series of letters whinging about extending the Yellingbo Conservation Area. I have lived in an extremely high-risk fire location for nearly 40 years now; one that probably makes these complaints laughable in comparison. But, as a firefighter of 15 years, I quickly worked out that I only had the choice of getting rid of the natural beauty and wildlife that I left Melbourne to enjoy, or else accept the risk and do everything possible to make my family and place safe in a major fire; and, in ways that did not require radical clearing. I now feel that, despite its location, the property is far safer than many residences in the township, and the environment is far more beautiful than it was in 1977 after considerable destruction by selective logging and soil removal. I am not suggesting that those complaining about the extension need to go to the lengths I have gone to for fire protection. I do, however, think they need to consider whether they want to live in a place of natural beauty and wildlife (that will be even more enhanced by the extension)and just accept what might, or might not, be a slightly increased risk; and perhaps work a little more on good non-destructive fire protection. On the other hand, if nature is so abhorrent and deeply fear-provoking to these writers, they might consider shifting to some suburb where there are no trees or other
'unsafe’ natural life. John Whiteoak, Healesville.
Healesville Guardian 7 November 1936 Healesville Curtain Raisers TUNEFUL melodies and bright frocks characterised ‘Why Worry’ a revue staged in the Memorial Hall on Wednesday night by the Healesville Curtain Raisers’ amateur theatrical society. The performance was witnessed by a capacity audience and the stage improvement fund should find itself considerably augmented. The Shire President (Cr Mowle) with Mrs and Miss Mowle and Mr Basil Bayles occupied a ‘box’ and there was an influx of ‘notabilities’ from Woori Yallock and other outside parts. Healesville appreciates comedy and when it finds itself confronted with all the changes and interchanges of a revue this little old town is in its seventh heaven of delight. Feed it with fun and absurd situations, sprinkled with songs and dances and you can be sure of reaching its heart. Healesville loves to laugh, and the simpler the joke the greater its glee. Upper Yarra Mail 10 November 1994 From Upper Yarra to Yarra Ranges - It’s Out of our Hands FINAL date for the lodgement of objections to the Local Government Board’s proposal for a Yarra Ranges Mega Shire was last Monday. The Shire of Upper Yarra had received over 500 letters protesting the decision and last Wednesday approximately 80 people attended the shire offices to voice their opposition to the mega shire proposal. A similar number of people attended a meeting in Healesville on the same night. Over 700 people were out in force in Upwey to voice their opposition to the board’s proposal. No-one at the Yarra Junction meeting supported the Mega Shire proposal. Duck Race Winners THE Great Duck (plastic ducks) was held in good conditions as part of the Five Bridges Festival recently. The winners of the Great Duck Race conducted were 1. Guy Nillson, 2. Lyn McLellan, 3. Turk, 4. Helen Ingram, 5. P, Lucas. – Contributed by Ellena Biggs
Seeing green A FEW short years ago, Warburton to Millgrove had tens of thousands of trees and grasses planted along the river banks. This has also created fuel for fires. In their wisdom, wattles and gums were planted frequently, in numbers of six to eight in a square metre and many in front of seats and under huge existing deciduous trees. Warburton is a tourist town where many people enjoy the river and now many parts have had the view cut off. Who comes up with these ideas and do they understand the implications in the future? I propose that these plantings be moved to all the ‘inner’ city areas of the Yarra? Of course, it may mean the end of all the bike and walking tracks and barbcue facilities and more ... if 100m wide areas are fenced off! Catherine Seegers, East Warburton
The fix is in DANIEL Andrews is blowing his trumpet about Fire Action Week (Mail, 25 October) - 'prepare your properties for fire’. I support Yarra Ranges Council; leave Yellingbo at Yellingbo. I hope the Premier will fix this very serious problem before it’s too late. Bev Griffin, Yarra Junction.

Mo’ mo money By Jesse Graham FOR some people, the start of November is the start of preparation for Christmas. For others, like Healesville’s Joel Hawting, the first of November marks the beginning of a monthlong fund-raiser, with one last shave for a good cause as Movember begins. Mr Hawting is one of the many people taking part in Movember, where participants shave at the beginning of the month and then put down the razor to try and grow facial hair. The event raises money for men’s health projects focusing on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention, with the goal of reducing the rates of premature death in men. Mr Hawting, who is part of a group of nine taking part in Movember, shaved on Tuesday 1 November, and said his team would be growing horseshoe-style moustaches, similar to the one sported by Dennis Lillee. “We’re all going to be Dennis Lillee lookalikes for a month,” he said. “I normally have a bit of threeday stubble or something - so to have it come off and to get a bit of length, it’s going to be interesting.” Mr Hawting said he hoped the event would help to raise awareness of men’s health, and prompt men to take the time to take stock of their health, both physical and mental. “I think men’s health is an area that as blokes, we’re not always good at looking after ourselves in a lot of ways,” he said. “For me, I think it was about a

ing together.” He said this year’s event asked participants to do some form of physical activity each day and record it, as a reminder to stay in good physical health. Though the team - the Horseshoe Crew - does not have a fund-raising goal for the month, Mr Hawting said he was hoping to raise $1000. WESBURN’S Myra Healey has joined the ranks of the Yarra Valley’s centenarians, celebrating her 100th birthday on Thursday 3 November. Ms Healey celebrated the occasion on Sunday in Williamstown with friends and family, on Wednesday 2 November at Yarra Junction’s Upper Yarra RSL with Legacy members and again on Thursday in a small event at Wild Cattle Creek Estate in Wandin North. About 40 friends and Legacy members attended the RSL lunch, with many dressed in nautical uniforms and costumes - a continuation of the first birthday celebration at Williamstown’s Titanic Restaurant. “We’ve had so many parties in my life I’ve had every kind of party you could imagine,” Ms Healey told the Mail. “My daughter said, ‘What do you want to do for your 100th?’ - just for a joke, I said I’ll go down on the Titanic. “Of course, she went straight and booked it and, oh, it was big. It was a good night.” Ms Healey said she and her husband
came to the Yarra Valley about 37 years ago, coming to live with a cousin before settling down in Wesburn and eventually joining Legacy. “When my husband died, they asked me to come join them,” she said. “I didn’t want to, because I didn’t know anything about Legacy - anyway, I did, and I became the oldest, longest-serving president in 90 years, eventually.” “I didn’t know that until they told me.” One of the attendees, Barry Dingle, said Ms Healey had spent her life doing all she could to help other people, and her work with Legacy was an example of that. “If it’s not helping others, she’s not interested in it,” Mr Dingle said. Ms Healey said she had already received letters from politicians to congratulate her on the milestone birthday. “I can’t believe it,” she said. “I can’t believe I’m 100 - when I was 99, everyone was telling me what a good age, I said that was nothing. “One hundred, it suddenly hit me, is a long time.”
Altitude Hair Studio becomes the Yarra Valleys first sustainable salon!
GET A HAIRCUT AND HELP SAVE THE PLANET
You may be surprised to learn that the Australian hairdressing industry sends 1,500 tons of recyclable aluminium back to landfill each year. That’s one and a half million kilos, about 715 cars, or Unfortunately aluminium doesn’t degrade easily, it actually contaminates the soil for 500 years. Add to this the waste of plastics, colour tubes, cut hair and more, and you soon see that beauty at any price is no longer an option. After joining Sustainable Salons Australia (SSA), local salon Altitude Hair Studio is set to change all this. Altitude Hair Studio now recycles 95% of its waste by using the comprehensive resource recovery service offered by Sustainable Salons Australia. “We are committed to sustainable growth that encourages social responsibility and respect for the planet. This simple initiative can make all the difference to what was once landfill waste become a future resource”, says Danielle Cameron, owner of Altitude Hair Studio. Rather than contaminating the waterways, excess shampoo and hair colour waste now go to a chemical recycler. Plastics are also recycled into construction material and gardening equipment. What’s more, Altitude Hair Studio staff love that the proceeds from recycling benefit the community through several programs. Every kilo of recycled aluminium helps Oz Harvest fund four meals for the homeless. Ponytails go to the Variety Charity to provide wigs to children with alopecia, while cut hair is made into booms used to absorb oil spills. As clients become more aware of the impact products have on the environment, they have also welcomed the opportunity to make a difference. “The hairdressing industry needs to take action now, and take care of the environment as much as we take care of clients”, says Paul Frasca, co-founder of SSA. “Danielle Cameron really cares about making their salon as eco-friendly as possible. When they looked at what they could do to become more sustainable both ecologically and economically, Sustainable Salons Australia was the obvious choice. By joining Sustainable Salons Australia, Altiude Hair Studio is happy it can support charities and benefit the community, while also taking care of a huge waste problem.

Gifted Agent equals great results for all concerned..... “I met Sandy Hall in my search for a property in the Warburton area and had arranged to meet her at a prospective property. The house was lovely, but it didn’t tick all of the boxes for me. Sandy asked me to describe what I wanted in a home and I outlined a few of my ‘must haves’. Subsequently, Sandy was able to show me the perfect Home and I immediately knew it was the right one and I was successful in purchasing it. Over the years, I have dealt with many Agents, and find that “listening skills” are often not practised. Sandy is able to really listen to your needs and one of her gifts is to match you to your perfect home. Sandy is professional in her approach, personable and keeps you informed throughout the process and I would recommend Sandy to both Buyers and Sellers. - Jan. Melbourne House selling within 12 hours must make one sit up and take notice. Sandy Hall, of Sandy Hall Real Estate, was the miracle worker. We found her professionalism and absolute dedication to maximising the desired result nothing short of amazing. A whirlwind………….. we would highly recommend the services of Sandy Hall. - Joseph and Joanna Guthrie

For Car accommodation there is a double carport and a large single lock up garage, with another near the front of the property. The distant mountain views and the lovely many rambling paddocks of approx. 20 acres overlooking and surrounding the dam are such an awesome sight and yet also so practical, this property is a sight to behold and will probably sell to the first to see it Don’t hesitate to arrange a personal inspection by phoning Sandy Hall on 0402 260 364 show less

Sweet sound By Jesse Graham AN EVENING of improvisation, music and words will be held on Sunday, 13 November, with two artists teaming up to perform at Warburton’s Projekt 3488. Andrew Darling and Indigo Perry, both Warburton residents, will perform The Forest Within at the converted Masonic Hall on the Sunday evening, with doors opening at 7pm ahead of their 8pm show. Mr Darling, a trumpet player of 34 years, said he and Ms Perry would be completely improvising their performance, with his music matching her words. Ms Perry is a lecturer in creative writing at Deakin University and a published author, and Mr Darling said she would be writing on a laptop, with her words being projected onto the walls of the venue as they were written. “In a performance arena, what we do is a kind of mutual improvisation over about 45 minutes to an hour,” he said. The idea for the performance came about through a discussion about poetry and writing between the two artists, and was formed through practice sessions in the East Warburton Redwood Forest. “We found out very quickly we have a very deeply kind-of
Andrew Darling and Indigo Perry will perform at Projekt 3488 on Sunday, 13 November. 161492 Picture: KATE BAKER shared resonance, in the way we approach creativity,” Mr Darling said. “The first session we had was incredibly powerful.” He said the venue was “an artistic and beautiful experience in itself”, and that although Sunday’s performance would be a one-off, the duo would look at more performances in future. The performance is being
presented by the Yarra Ranges Council and the Yarra Art Rangers Network’s Art Seed Pod Project. Entry is $15 per person, or $10 for concession holders. Projekt 3488 is located at 3488 Warburton Highway, Warburton. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/artrangersnetwork.
The anatomy of an affair By Jesse Graham UPPER Yarra Arts Centre will host a one-woman performance exploring a disappearance, murder and shocking revelations on Saturday, 12 November, with Waking Up Dead opening for one night only. The show, performed by Caroline Lee, follows a woman whose husband disappears and is murdered - with his double life as a swinger revealed in the aftermath, shattering her perception of their relationship. Ms Lee’s character investigates her husband’s secrets using a large white drawing board on the stage, drawing and making notes as she fleshes out the couple’s years together. “I guess what’s going on is her looking back and sort of examining with the use of drawing ... and through drawing things and recalling things and going through significant memories, she goes through how could this happen and who is she, who was she, who was he, how did this happen and then how does she continue on?” she said. “I guess one of the great things about the play is that many of us have had to experience betrayal, and ... she’s working through what that betrayal is and how that makes her feel.” Over the course of the play, the drawing board becomes full of notes, memories and drawings that take on new meanings and flow together to form a picture of the couple’s life together, as well as the life the wife never knew about. Ms Lee said the play also discussed whether or not the husband’s infidelity changed the memories of him as a loving husband and father, and how media attention after a tragedy could affect those involved. The play is a fictionalised account of the death of Herman Rockefeller, who was found to have a

One strange feast of action Doctor Strange (M) Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelsen THE Marvel Cinematic Universe goes full fantasy in Doctor Strange. Talented neurosurgeon Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) loses the use of his hands in a car accident, and begins studying magic at a Nepalese academy. Meanwhile, a corrupted master threatens to bring an ancient evil to Earth. Doctor Strange is the best Marvel film since the first Avengers movie.
Though the second act feels somewhat rushed, Doctor Strange does an outstanding job of balancing Strange’s personal journey, in which he sets aside his ego to embrace a greater cause, with the looming mystical threat. As such, the film is consistently compelling, but also has witty humour, excellent character development all around and a refreshing note of moral ambiguity. The MCU has long been derided for its weak villains - with the exception of Loki and veteran Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen is now a new exception as Caecilius. This wayward
student of the mystical arts is sinister and gleefully cruel yet soft-spoken, dignified and charismatic. The action is dazzlingly vibrant and energetic, warping both space and time in beautiful ways, and the climax contains a brilliant act of temporal trickery that must be seen to be believed. Taking a tried-and-true formula and infusing it with endless visual imagination and fantastic character writing, Doctor Strange is another triumph for the MCU. - Seth Lukas Hynes
Waking Up Dead will be performed at the Upper Yarra Arts Centre on 12 November. 161488 Picture: CONTRIBUTED double life as a swinger after his body was found, and how the details of his life emerged afterwards. “The other strong theme in it is just how things can be sensationalised by the media and how that impacts on the individual,” Ms Lee said. “The media stakes out outside her house and she was just hounded by the media and their whole world was dissected publicly and everyone had an opinion about it. “How does that impact on a human being who’s trying to personally manage that as well?” The show has been performed around Melbourne, and will be performed at the Upper Yarra Arts Centre at 3409 Warburton Highway, Warburton for one night only on 12 November. Doors open at 7.30pm, and tickets are $28, $24 for concession holders or $20 per person for groups of six or more. For more information, call 5966 4500 or visit ach.yarraranges.vic.gov.au.

The site, his machinery, workshop, a mountain of spare parts and running gear excess to new owners requirements. So it’s all going under the hammer, there is a long list of collectable truck and vehicles. Bloods sitting in box seat By Chris Anderson YVCA AFTER a frustrating month of indifferent weather, cricketers around the valley enjoyed the opportunity to expand their skills on day one of two day cricket. In the competition’s premier grade, DJ Strachan Shield, you could’ve been mistaken for thinking a few of the teams were still stuck in one day mode. Healesville and Seville entered their clash desperate for the points, as another loss would see the loser fall further off the pace, while the winner would have the chance to reignite their season. Healesville won the toss, and with the Hamer brothers offering lone hands in recent weeks, the Bloods would’ve been looking for a lift from their entire line up to post a significant total. From the outset, this couldn’t have been any further from what was delivered. After a loose first over, speedster Matt Hadlam combined with the swing of Mark Sandfort to all but blow the innings wide open. With Sandort collecting four wickets, and Hadlam blasting out another, the visitors found themselves on the ropes at 5/44 after 12 overs. As mentioned, with some mediocre returns from the rest of the batting order in recent weeks, the Blues could smell blood. Brent Damrow (24) joined Mark Minney at the crease and the pair calmly put together a game-changing partnership. With tea in sight, and the innings gaining momentum, the introduction of Tom Page to the attack changed the complexion of the innings once again. In the space of his second over, Page was able to end the stoic 76-run partnership by removing Mark Minney for a well-made half century, then capped it off by removing the dangerous Dermott Fry. With the brace of wickets just on the calling of tea, Seville had worked their way back into the contest to have the Bloods wobbling at 7/126. Their case was enhanced after the break as Sandfort was able to remove the patient Damrow to reduce the Bloods innings from one of strength to again be teetering at 8/134 with an
early closure in sight. Unfortunately for the home side, Max Minney (26) and Dylan Moore (32) combined for a cameo partnership that enabled Healesville to reach equal footing, before being bowled out for 192 on the back of a brilliant 58-run, ninth wicket partnership. Sandfort was the pick of the bowlers with much deserved figures of 5/52, while Page nabbed 2/26. Healesville were able to capitalise on the momentum shift. With 13 overs to see out, Seville were rocked from the opening ball. With Dermott Fry (2/8) leading from the front, and Dylan Moore’s (3/1) probing spin, the pair cut a swathe through the Blues’ batting lineup to deliver complete ownership of day one to the Bloods, as Seville found themselves on the brink of disaster at 5/17. Meanwhile, it’s hard to describe Warburton-Millgrove’s dominance on day one of their contest with Yarra Junction. With much to play for, Yarra Junction opened up proceedings with the bat, but they soon found themselves victim to the brilliance that is David Lever. Lever made short work of the Eagles as he expertly dealt with the home team’s top order. His dominance was so profound that at different stages through the innings, Yarra Junction found themselves 6/12 and 8/29. Thankfully, Yarra Junction’s tail wagged and they averted a complete disaster. In the end, the total was extended to 82 and some credibility was regained considering the innings was looking a lot worse for the home team. Lever’s amazing figures of 7/39 shook his former club to the core. Buoyed by the late fight back, and stung by some dismal individual performances, the Yarra Junction bowlers did their best to regain some face. Burras' opener, Ben Lever (42 not out) anchored the visitors’ response. With the fall of only two wickets at the other end, he was able to guide his side to a lead by the close of play. The only game still in the balance is the game between Mount Evelyn and Yarra Glen.
Mount Evelyn won the toss, and didn’t hesitate in electing to bat in excellent conditions. The home team were on the front foot early and despite some early wickets, controlled the contest between bat and ball. Opener Daniel Giblin (38) and the brilliant Kane Jones (32) had the Rovers in control of the contest at 2/79 on the back of a well compiled 52-run partnership. With the innings starting to slip, Yarra Glen captain, Brendan Ricci, looked to take the pace off the ball, and this had immediate results. James Kelly (2/47) is proving himself as a leg-spinner capable in the top grade. He soon removed the impatient Jones, and with the support of John Orren at the other end, the pair wrested control of the game with three quick wickets to have the home side struggling at 5/92. Veteran Chris Anderson joined Jesse Fraser at the wicket, and the pair went about getting things back on track. Despite being challenged, the batsmen were able to navigate through a tough period and managed to guide the Rovers to a position of relative strength at tea, with the score sitting on 5/146. With the pair in complete control, and registering a century partnership, Lusk was able to break the partnership, coaxing a false shot from Fraser to accept a relatively easy caught and bowled chance. Fraser would be disappointed with the dismissal, with his innings on 80, he looked well on track for a muchdeserved century. The innings slipped a little from there on as the batsmen managed to keep the runs flowing, but at the risk of regular wickets. Lusk (4/40) was the main beneficiary of the batsmen’s cavalier approach. The visitors wouldn’t have been disappointed in restricting the total to 266. DJ Strachan Shield HEALESVILLE 192 (M. Healesville to host first big greyhound day out THE wider Victorian community of greyhound owners and their pets are invited to Healesville on Saturday, 12 November, for the first ever Greyhound Family Fun Day. The day will celebrate all things greyhound with dog-friendly activities including dog washing, vet checks and educational talks as well as a walk around the stunning Healesville Greyhound Racing Track property. Families are also catered for with a free barbecue, ice-creams, giveaways and an endless amount of activities for the kids. The Greyhound Family Fun Day isn’t just for Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) pets, as all breeds are welcome. Non-green collar greyhounds are required to be muzzled and all dogs are to be kept on the lead. Fee tickets are strictly
limited and can be booked by going to gap.grv.org.au. In 2015-’16, a record 895 greyhound adoptions were made through Greyhound Racing Victoria’s GAP. With more and more people choosing to take on greyhounds as pets, a burgeoning community has evolved. GAP Manager Larissa Darragh said there was little wonder greyhounds were becoming increasingly popular as pets. “They really are friendly, affectionate and lazy dogs who don’t require a lot of exercise,” Ms Darragh said. “We love the fact that people are taking them on as pets and we believe putting on a fun day like this is the perfect way for these beautiful re-homed greyhounds and their owners to come together and enjoy each other’s company.”

By Russell Colvin THREE Bridges motocross star Daniel ‘Chucky’ Sanders went into the Husqvarna Australia Wildwood Rock Extreme Enduro last Sunday as one of the race favourites after winning last year. This iconic event at Wildwood, now in its seventh year, is nothing like the Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC) that Sanders has been racing in, which saw him take out this year’s overall and E3 category championship with the KTM Australia Off-Road Team. The 12km enduro is made up of massive rocks and hill climbs. Sanders managed to post fifth fastest in the prologue heat with a time of 2:41.006, which saw him starting off on the second row. After nailing a good start for the main event, Sanders led the group that he was in for the first half of the lap. However, on one the first technical hill climbs, he just missed a ‘sneaky’ little line-up on the grass which forced him to take to the real hard rocky stuff. “I just misplaced the wheels, so I just rolled it down the hill a bit and in the process just hurt the body a little bit,” Sanders said. Drama was to strike again, this time on the sixth and final lap when he looped out on one of the hill climbs, which resulted in a broken throttle housing. Sanders showed his determination and finished the race by pulling on the throttle cable.
The rock garden proved to be a challenging part of the 12km track. 161542 Pictures: RUSSELL COLVIN Overall, Sanders came home in 13th place, and in eighth place in the Pro class, with a total time of 3.52:57.051. “It was just one of those days,” Sanders said, who admitted this year’s event was tougher than 2015. Sanders will now turn his attention to the Australian Four Day Enduro (A4DE), which kicks off on 16 November in Mansfield.
After crashing and breaking his throttle housing, Sanders kept going by pulling the throttle cable. 161542

EXHAUST Fix Lilydale has moved to a bigger and better location in Lilydale to accommodate its rapidly growing business and accessibility. Mike Sloane and his team at Exhaust Fix Lilydale provide nothing but the highest quality care for their customers. The business was established 28 years ago, and has become a household name in auto care. Exhaust Fix Lilydale offer standard, custom and performance exhaust systems, brakes, suspension and tow bars. They specialise in stainless-steel and custom exhaust work on all types of cars, some including show cars, hot rods, race cars, drift cars and high-performance street cars. Mr Sloane has 32 years of experience in the industry, and has grown up in the area for most of his life. Another member of his team, Matt Cook, started with Exhaust Fix Lilydale once he completed school and has been with the company for five years. Exhaust Fix Lilydale will always offer friendly service, free inspections and quotes. In every case, customers are guaranteed to know up front how much the service or repair will cost, and in the event the team find an item that requires attention, the customer will be contacted and given the option to repair it while they have the car in the workshop. Exhaust Fix Lilydale has moved from 1 Maroondah Court, Lilydale to a new and bigger factory located at 127 Beresford Road, Lilydale. The fully equipped workshop can handle anything from a simple muffler replacement to road, race and prestige vehicles. For all inquiries, Exhaust Fix Lilydale is open 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 8am to noon on Saturday, or call 9735 5284.
