Time to light Christmas in Geelong P11
Elaine better than Average
It’s Kiss and makeup at Sphinx P19 MP slams insurance giant in federal parliament Elaine Valentine gets into character as ‘Edna Average’ for her annual appearance at Geelong’s Gala Day tomorrow. FULL STORY PAGE 7 Picture: Luke Voogt
Fire victims ‘screwed’ An insurance giant is “trying to screw” clients who lost homes in Wye River’s Christmas Day bushfire, federal parliament has heard. AAMI Insurance was refusing to cover full rebuilding costs for “a number” of policy-holders who should have total coverage, said Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson. The shortfall could reach $250,000 for some AAMI clients, she told parliament. Ms Henderson read out promotional material for AAMI’s complete replacement cover.
“If your home is damaged or destroyed by an insured event, we’ll repair or build it no matter the cost to us,” she quoted. The insurer’s failure to keep its end of the deal was “disgraceful”, she said. “The problem is AAMI will not rebuild the home itself – the policy does offer this discretion – and it is refusing to provide sufficient money to cover the cost of the rebuild. “In at least six cases AAMI is underquoting the cost of the rebuild by between an estimated
$100,000 and $250,000. “In a number of cases, AAMI will only reveal the lowest quote to rebuild and refuses to release any funds so policyholders can get architect plans drawn up, which is required for an independent costing.” AAMI was also using companies without enough local knowledge to satisfy bushfire attack level requirements, Ms Henderson said. “These companies also carry none of the risk of rebuilding, meaning there are no consequences
for them for underquoting or not providing sufficient contingency.” The insurance stand-off, almost a year after the fire, was forcing owners with mortgages on destroyed homes “to the wall”, Ms Henderson said. She accused AAMI of “frankly, trying to screw them”. AAMI was “committed to resolving these claims as a priority”, the company told the Indy. Continued page 3

Melbourne mayor ‘snubs jury for date with Santa’ By Luke Voogt Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle will miss the Geelong Citizens Jury this weekend - thanks to a date with Santa. The City of Melbourne confirmed Cr Doyle’s appointment with the jolly red man at a Melbourne Christmas ceremony tomorrow (Saturday). He joins a number of public figures who are unable to attend including Geelong council CEO Kelvin Spiller and former premier Jeff Kennett. Mr Kennett had the second-most votes on the jurors’ wish list of speakers but had already agreed to speak at a Remembrance Day ceremony in Canberra. He hoped to speak at the jury’s final meeting on 26 November to address “failures” in Geelong’s local government.
“If the organisers come back with an invitation I’d be very happy to come,” he said. “I’ve had a great interest in Geelong for many years.” The group behind the jury, the newDemocracy Foundation, invited Mr Kennett to make a video or written submission. But he said the issues at hand were “far too important for just a few glib lines”. “At this stage I would like to give the jury the benefit of my experience directly.” The avowed ‘Minister for Geelong’ declined to discuss his potential submission to the jury. But he said he would discuss his views with the Indy if he was unable to attend the final meeting. NewDemocracy executive director Iain Walker said the jurors would decide if Mr Kennett would speak at the final meeting and stressed
there would be limited time for him to present. “We’d love Jeff Kennett to turn up on Saturday morning but even without him we’ve got a group of people hearing from a wide array of speakers,” he said. “They are certainly going to be better informed than somebody filling in a government survey on the waterfront.” Last month the Andrews government appointed the newDemocracy Foundation to establish a jury of 100 residents to reshape Geelong’s local government. Six of the eight people the jury shortlisted to speak at the event will not attend but newDemocracy has arranged a number of replacements. Walkley Award winning journalist and former councillor Stephen Mayne will fly in from Los Angeles for the event.

A single centralised authority should replace the “patchwork” of bodies which are trying to manage the Great Ocean Road, according to Polwarth MP Richard Riordan. The authority could provide “clear, strong, overarching strategic management” to replace the “endless bureaucracy” which was now afflicting the tourism icon, he said.

“Only seven claims” of 63 filed with AAMI were still in negotiation, the company said. “The majority of AAMI customers at Wye River had purchased the optional Complete Replacement Cover (which) provides full insurance cover, meaning customers cannot be underinsured. “However, claims under these policies can take slightly longer to settle as there is more work re-
quired to ensure the customer’s settlement is the correct amount.” AAMI also sourced multiple quotes from independent builders to determine replacement and repair costs, the company said. “We consult closely with our customers throughout this process and negotiate where there are different cost estimates presented.”

Clean up or stay away, Trump told By Luke Voogt Geelong MP Christine Couzens says US Presidentelect Donald Trump would have to clean up his act before she would welcome him to the city. Devastated at the election result, Ms Couzens said Trump’s racist and sexist attitudes would make it very difficult for her to welcome him to Geelong or, indeed, Australia. “We saw during the election campaign his distaste for women and his sexism and racism. I would hate to see that reflected anywhere in Australia.” Trump’s election gave the American people the feeling it “was right to be racist or sexist”, Ms
Labor MP’s invitation conditions Couzens said. “I would hate to see anything like that happen in Australia.” Ms Couzens said she would watch Trump’s presidential term with interest to see if it matched his campaign rhetoric. “If there was a change in his attitude and he did govern for all Americans, as he said in his acceptance speech, I would welcome him to Geelong.” Ms Couzens said Mr Trump represented a trend of populist celebrity politicians. She cited billionaire turned Federal MP Clive
Palmer, who gained infamy for falling asleep in parliament, as an Australian example. “If we look at what has happened in the past they don’t come up with the goods,” she said. “He wasn’t able to deliver and his demise was quite rapid.” She said former Geelong mayor Darryn Lyons “could be an interpretation” of this trend locally. South Barwon MP Andrew Katos said the “US people had spoken” and any US President would be welcome in Geelong. Mr Katos said Mr Trump had offered “the olive
branch to all Americans” in his acceptance speech, despite his controversial campaign rhetoric. “Even he’s said himself that some of the comments he made in the past were wrong.” Lara MP John Eren, who is due to return to work today (Friday) after a near-fatal cardiac arrest, congratulated Mr Trump on his election. He said he would welcome the President-elect out of respect for his office but that he would not condone some of his more controversial remarks. “I hope he rethinks some of his rhetoric.” The cardiac arrest left Mr Eren clinically dead for three minutes on Father’s Day (4 September).

MEDITATIVE: Falun Gong practitioners on Geelong’s waterfront protesting against Chinese Government forced organ harvesting. 161738
Spiritual gathering on waterfront condemns forced harvesting of organs Asian spiritualists have used Geelong’s waterfront to protest against the Chinese Government harvesting their practitioners’ organs. The Falun Gong protest was part of 100-city SOS car tour across Australia. Speaker Yuan An said officials force-fed and blood-tested her in 2004 after she was summarily jailed in China for handing out Falun Gong flyers. The first publicity of harvesting in 2006 left her
believing the officials wanted to steal her organs. “There were hidden secrets of unconscionable evil,” she said. Doctor Lucy Zhao, president of a body representing Falun Gong practitioners, hoped the tour would raise awareness about the movement’s 17 years of persecution. “We realise that most Australians know little about Falun Gong and the tragic situation in China,”
Dr Zhao said. “We hope that the car tour will help fellow-Australians know more about what is going on in China today.” Fellow practitioner Lucy Liu encouraged Geelong residents to contact their local MPs to support a private members’ bill this month condemning the alleged harvesting. The protesters alleged organs were taken from hundreds of thousands of Falun Gong practitioners
in China. Harvesting claims received worldwide media attention when independent investigators reported that “non-consenting prisoners of conscience” were the primary source of “unethical organ procurement”. The investigators suggested the government had killed and forcibly removed the organs of a millions of prisoners, with Falun Gong practitioners the main target.

Double Take Local divers might have thought they were in for an unusual treat when the Australian RSL revealed the venue for next month’s national centenary concert. The RSL announced that Aussies stars including Kasey Chambers and Archie Roach would perform at next month’s fully-catered concert - on the deck of HMAS Canberra. Wait, what? The scuttled HMAS Canberra? Now a dive site in 28 metres of water off Ocean Grove? Fortunately for the short of breath, the concert will actually be in Sydney on the deck of the new HMAS Canberra, which replaced its sunken predecessor. Leave your scuba gear at the door!

Common wisdom has it that the Cats rule Geelong. But events this week revealed that a somewhat more shadowy hand may grasp the City by the Bay – and with links to the footy club as well.
As Freemasons celebrated former member and early Cats skipper Chas Brownlow this week, the slightly secretive society’s connections to council emerged. While discussing Brownlow’s local contributions, the Freemasons also noted their municipal involvement through members who were mayors of Geelong. Which is all fine and dandy, of course; Freemasons seem mostly community-minded blokes with some handy practical skills to boot. But more intriguing was the lodge’s crest – identical to City Hall’s previous design, from colouration and motto right down to winged sea creatures and red-headed cow/deer thingy. The lodge and council shared the design (pictured) from 1960 until City Hall devised a new
crest in 2014. According to Freemasons Victoria, the lodge was “authorised to use” the city’s design. Hmmm. So Freemason mayors and a shared crest until just recently. Geelong or Freelong? Double Take isn’t saying it’s a conspiracy … but it’s a conspiracy! Today’s Indy elsewhere reports interesting local research to examine the benefits of playing Aussie Rules for kids with “developmental challenges” such as intellectual disability. Well, the observations of a certain team’s followers could possibly save the boffins a little time. Comparing line-ups between the ’80s and present day, the answer could only be, yes, AFL is correlated with intellectual gains. But that’s between, rather than within, generations of players.

Dog grooming mum hoses down wash trailer thieves By Luke Voogt Lara mother and dog-groomer Deb Goldsmith was ecstatic after police recovered her stolen dog wash trailer on Wednesday morning. “I’m just so happy - I have my livelihood back,” she said. Police received several sightings of the van through social media throughout the week and located the trailer about 6.30am. Ms Goldsmith posted photos of the recovered trailer and thanked police for their efforts. She was furious to discover the trailer missing at 9am Sunday when she was celebrating her daugh-
ter’s 10th birthday. “You don’t want to know what I said,” she said. “Expletives, lots of them.” The unusual theft went viral after her friend posted it on social media and groomers across Australia responded with hundreds of offers of support. Local business loaned her a trailer and gear to continue working on Tuesday, while clients offered to stop by her house. “I cannot thank them enough,” she said. “The grooming community is like a big family.” In Ms Goldsmith’s post the thieves appeared to have scratched the lettering of the logo on the dogwash.
She was still perplexed as to why they would steal the clearly-marked trailer or how they planned to get away with it. “I’ve got no idea why they would steal a dog wash trailer,” she said. “Clearly they wanted to wash their dogs.” But she had a clear message for anyone stealing property. “I’d like them to go and get real job and earn money like I do,” she said. Ms Goldsmith couldn’t wait to return full-time to cleaning canine clients. “I love my job. Dogs show you so much affection,” she said.

Average Elaine’s ‘debt to hospital’ By Luke Voogt
HELLO POSSUMS: Dame Edna 'Average' models her outfit for the centenary of Gala Day on Malop Street
Elaine Valentine reckons she owes her life to Geelong’s public hospital. “I am only alive because of the Geelong Hospital staff and their good care,” she said. The woman, better known Dame Edna Average, was showing off her new outfit ahead of the centenary of Gala Day this Saturday. “I’ve done 16 Gala Days as Dame Edna Average,” she told the Indy. Elaine has long been a fan of Barry Humphries and alter-ego Dame Edna Everage. She has seen the Australian domestic goddess live in several shows. “She can get away with anything,” Elaine said. Elaine first donned the lilac locks for Geelong’s bicentennial parade in 1988. In 1990 she entered her “average” impersonation in the Gala Day Parade, bagging the best novelty act a year later. “Gala needs good characters. Back when I first started we had Charlie Chaplin - there were a lot of us.” The 73-year-old’s love of Gala Day extends all the way back to 1951. She still remembers Side Show Alley and marching in the parade as an eight-year-old from Tate Street Primary School. “Children of my generation have fond memories of Gala Day,” she said. But the parade took on a different meaning for Elaine after an horrific car crash on Sydney Parade in 1969. “A naughty boy came out on the left and hit my car,” she said. “He came into the side of us doing 85 miles per hour.”
The crash left Elaine with severe feet, head and internal injuries. “I looked like a panda bear gone wrong with my black eyes,” she said. Elaine spent four years at the hospital recovering and often fell ill. “There were times they didn’t think I was going to live,” she said. She spent decades visiting the hospital’s outpatients section as a result of the accident. “If you run your fingers across my forehead you’ll feel the bumps of all the roads in Geelong,” she said. But Elaine had mostly recovered by the 1990s and has paraded as Edna Average ever since. “It’s my way of giving back,” she said. This Saturday will mark 100 years since first Gala Day float rolled down Ryrie Street to the bells and voice of the town crier. Gala Day was arguably the biggest event on the Geelong Calender from the 1940s through to the 1970s. From 1927 through to very recent years Gala Day raised money for the Geelong Hospital Appeal. A decade long tradition nurses with bedpans will follow the parade route collecting donations for the hospital. This year’s parade on Malop Street will include colourful floats, music, sporting heroes, familiar celebrities, Santa and Mrs Claus and movie characters, promoters said. For timings and locations for this year’s parade, visit galaday.com.au This year Gala Day is fundraising for Project Love - the redevelopment of the Andrew Love Cancer Centre Chemotherapy Day Ward and Oncology Pharmacy.

Stickers, posts ‘lure gun thieves’ By Luke Voogt Geelong shooters are inadvertently advertising their gun ownership to thieves, a veteran instructor has warned. Lara’s Rob Loricco said licensed owners showing their love of shooting through social media or bumper stickers were putting themselves at risk. “Don’t put Winchester stickers on your vehicles because undesirables who see them are going to follow you to your home,” he said. Mr Loricco also cautioned owners against posting hunting photos and gun photos online. “It doesn’t even have to be you taking the photo and putting it up,” he said. “You might not even have a Facebook account but people can still identify you.” The lifelong shooter has trained more than 150 people prior to them applying for their gun licence as a firearms safety officer for Victoria Police. But Victoria’s firearms safety course lacked any social media training for new shooters, Mr Loricco said. “The presentation which we’re using at the moment has been in existence for a number of years.” Mr Loricco instead instructed new owners “verbally” from his own notes on the dangers of advertising their weapons. But his system was set to change after he joined a team including Victoria Police District Firearms Officers (DFO) rewriting the course, Mr Loricco said. Social media awareness would become an important part of the new course, he said. Mr Loricco’s warning followed a 35 per cent rise in Geelong firearms offences in the past year. Earlier this year police reported increases in prohibited persons carrying firearms, often stolen and exchanged for drugs. Geelong DFO Senior Constable John Dunstan said police had noted a recent “lull” in thefts of firearms but that gun-related offences were always a concern in Geelong. Sen Const Dunstan urged licensed owners to be responsible and prevent their weapons from falling into the wrong hands. “You wouldn’t advertise you’ve got $10,000 under your bed in a shoebox, would you?”
HAVING A BLAST: Rob Loricco instructs a shooter at Little River’s run range. Picture: TATJANA PLITT
Volunteer Rob stays on target despite setbacks in life By Luke Voogt A serious work accident, a stroke and blindess have failed to stop Rob Loricco shooting. Right-handed Rob learned to shoot 52 years ago, aged 14, despite a childhood accident blinding his right eye. “I learnt to shoot a rifle left-handed,” he said. “I’ll never be up there with the best marksman
but that doesn’t stop me from doing what I love.” When Rob retired about three years ago he decided to give back to the sport. He has volunteered at Eagle Park Shooting Range in Little River since. Rob’s patience with his shooting helped make him popular among new experienced shooters, fellow instructors said. “If I’m spending two hours at the range and I hit the bullseye I’m stoked,” he said.
“I just want everyone to enjoy their time as much as I do.” Rob monitors shooters’ scores on weekends. “We show them the safest way to use that firearm,” he said. Rob fought his way back from a stroke in 1994 and a work accident in 1979. After three back operations doctors told him he would never work or play sport again. “I proved them all wrong,” he said.

‘Stupid’ stars of bottleshop CCTV “Stupid” thieves continue stealing booze despite security cameras now monitoring most Geelong bottleshops. Police posted on social media more images of suspects this week after publicising a series of similar incidents in recent months. The proliferation of security cameras has exposed the prevalence of alcohol theft in Geelong, with offenders of both sexes and various ages captured in the act. This week’s images, on a Geelong police Facebook page, included five males pictured at Waurn Ponds. An in-store camera captured the group in Coles Liquorland on Tuesday afternoon. Police posted that the five would be able to “assist with this investigation”. Comments on the Facebook post highlighted the youthful appearance of the “little skunks”. “Stupid kids - they will now have a record,” Sandra Kelly commented. Police also this week posted an image from 27 September of another apparently youthful male wanted for questioning over an alleged bottleshop theft. The image was from East Geelong’s Pre Mix King, police said. “He looks 12,” posted Kezz Forrest. Police asked anyone with information about either alleged theft to phone Senior Constable Sean Coffey at Geelong Police Station on 5225 3100 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 The Indy has reported numerous Geelong bottleshop thefts in the past year, with images of

The thefts have covered anywhere from a single product to a slab of beers or two dozen bottles of bourbon. In August 2015 Geelong police’s Liquor Licensing Unit launched Relapse Strategy to curtail recidivist alcohol thieves. The strategy allowed police to target and ban the thieves from entering liquor stores for up to 12 months. Sixty liquor outlets signed up to the strategy, police said. Police told the Indy that the strategy attracted interest from stations across the state.

Geelong's iconic Floating Christmas Tree returned to the city's waterfront on Tuesday ahead of tonight's Light Up Geelong celebrations. Sophia Katos and Imogen Brough will headline the event, performing popular carols until the tree lights up at 9pm. The launch will include the Rachel Brennan Duo, Uptown Brown, Steve Thew, children’s entertainment and, of course, Santa himself. From 3 December residents will get to create their own colourful displays, controlling the tree from a touchpad at the Carousel. City Hall investment and attraction general
manager Brett Luxford said Light Up Geelong would kick-start the festive season. “The City is proud to deliver such a fun community event that has created memories and new traditions for families and visitors.” “Come into central Geelong early, take advantage of free parking specials and enjoy dinner and some shopping before getting to the waterfront.” Mr Luxford encouraged locals to give presents and donations to the Bethany Giving Tree Appeal at the launch. A full schedule for the events is available at the council’s website. 11 GEELONG INDY Friday, 11 November, 2016

Drove far too fast Police nabbed a 20-year-old Inverleigh man driving almost 50km/h over the limit while on a VicRoads-imposed good behaviour bond in Moriac on Wednesday. Geelong Highway Patrol officers detected a car allegedly travelling 144km/h in a 100km/h zone on Princes Highway at 3.15pm. Police suspended the man’s licence, issued him with a $661 on-the-spot fine and added six demerit points to his licence. The man was driving under a demerit point good behaviour bond, where even one demerit point would mean the suspension of his licence for six months from VicRoads. The VicRoads bond plus the six-month suspension he earned on the Princes Freeway will mean he will effectively lose his licence for 12 months. The man stated he was driving fast to meet up with his boss who was on his way out for the day, police said. Police reminded motorists to plan journeys and leave early heading into a busy summer for the Bellarine and Surf Coast. GET SET: Maddi Robinson, Joel Selwood and Nadia Bartel prepare for Run Geelong.
On the run for ward cash High-profile ambassadors of Geelong’s biggest charity run have called for more entries to help refurbish children’s and maternity wards at the city’s public hospital. Cats skipper Joel Selwood, teammate’s wife Nadia Bartel and local netball star Madi Robinson have thrown their weight behind Run Geelong on 20 November. The event has raised more than $2.3 million for Barwon Health Foundation since the first run in 2009. Organisers said 100 per cent of proceeds went to the ward upgrades at University Hospital Geelong. This year’s event will include runs and walks over various distances to cater for adults and children. “There are so many reasons to get involved,” Selwood said ahead of his seventh appearance in
the fundraiser. “Firstly, because I love the event we put on as a community and, secondly, to see the impact of the funds raised and how they can make a difference to the hospital. “Don’t miss out on an opportunity to make a difference and get joy out of playing a part in making our community a better place. Selwood said he would participate in the event’s 6km walk, giving him time to mingle with fans. “I like participating in this one as it allows me to talk, have photos with as many people as I can and I also get to see everyone smiling.” Robinson said she was keen to support the hospital again in her fifth event as a Run Geelong ambassador. “Run Geelong is very close to my heart. Ob-
viously, growing up here you understand how important it is for our families and kids to have access to good hospitals and healthcare. “I’ve met so many beautiful families over the years that have been directly affected by the causes we have raised money for, so it really becomes a reality and you see why these services are so vital to our community.” Bartel encouraged new participants to enter this year’s event. “Just give it a go,” she said. “Especially this year there’s something for everyone, as you can get the family together and do the 6k walk or there is even a 3k walk option.” Run Geelong registration and more information is available at runaustralia.com.au/run-geelong.
Mayors move in Former mayors have taken the reins again at Surf Coast and Golden Plains shires. Policeman Brian McKiterick was elected unopposed for his second stint as mayor despite colleague Rose Hodge expressing interesting in securing the top job for a fourth time in 12 years on the council. Both were re-elected as councillors at statewide municipal elections last month. Cr McKiterick, entering his third term on council, nominated pending residential development of Spring Creek Valley and “the instability” of the Great Ocean Road as challenges for the new council. Golden Plains councillors voted Des Phelan as their mayor, which he called “a real honour”. “I will remain a strong advocate for supporting young families and providing opportunities for those at risk of isolation to remain connected,” he said. “As mayor I am committed to supporting both the council and the organisation to make good decisions for the benefit of our community.”

True taste of Geelong in the baking A local family has made Routley’s Bakery synonymous with the Geelong region for more than 60 years. With a well-deserved reputation among other local families for beautifully baked goods, Vic and Verna Routley first started baking in 1947. The couple grew up in Geelong but the original Routley’s store was in Nelson Place, Williamstown. After World War II, the couple moved to Williamstown where Vic worked as a baker. He and Verna decided to buy the shop where he had been working and began operating it together. The couple’s working days began at midnight
when they stoked up their big brick-lined Scotch oven, fired with wood or briquettes. They would put the pies in first when the oven was hottest, followed by cakes and then the delicate sponges. In 1971 Vic and Verna handed on the baton to their son Lawrie and wife Anne. The couple expanded the business to its present state with the help of their five children: Simon, Penny, Michael, Kate and Sam. The Routley family now also includes 10 great-grandchildren, with the eldest, Michael, also now working for the business. Routleys has a firm reputation as one of Geelong’s best bakeries but stands apart from the
field for the quality of its pies in particular. The big variety covers ingredients ranging from prime beef, veal and chicken through to tuna and vegetarian options. Wholemeal options are available, along with poplar Cornish pasties, sausage rolls, bread, sandwiches and much more. Routley’s operates nine outlets, including shops at Lara, Torquay, Colac and around Geelong. A catering service is also available, offering an ideal option for corporate events, family gatherings and club functions. Routley’s flagship North Geelong shop is open 6.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday, 7am to
4pm Saturdays and 9am to 4pm Sundays at 322 Melbourne Road. The North Geelong bakery offers daily specials, such as $5 packs of pies and cakes, $2 loaves of bread and $2 bags of rolls. Customers are invited to speak with staff about Routley’s delicious range of special-occasions cakes. The bakers can even make exotic chocolate croquembouches. More information about the company and its products is available at routleysbakery.com.au. Routley’s also invites customers to like its Facebook page to keep abreast of the latest specials.

Disabled kids in ‘first’ AFL study World-first Geelong research will investigate whether playing footy can help children overcome “developmental challenges”, Deakin University has announced. The university said Moose Toys had donated $1 million for the study that would “break down the barriers” preventing children with conditions such as autism, ADHD and intellectual disabilities from playing sport. The AFL would help conduct the research under Deakin Child Study Centre director Professor Nicole Rinehart, Deakin said. “It is well-documented that team sports and physical activity are protective factors for children and have long-lasting benefits to health, yet access to sport is not a level playing field in Australia,” Prof Rinehart said. “Parents of children with disabilities are still receiving advice along the lines of ‘your child will never be able to play team sports, perhaps pick a solitary sport’.” The study would have “an enormous impact on our community where disability is associated with disadvantage, low expectations, exclusions, obesity, poor school attendance and poor mental health”, Prof Rinehart said. “With the evidence we gather it is possible that in the near future clinicians will prescribe team sports as a key intervention for children diagnosed with a developmental challenge. “This will be a real game changer for Australian sport.” Deakin said the ALLPlay study program will “kick off ” next month with a national survey. “The survey will capture the voice and lived experience of children, parents, and coaches from around Australia and set the scene for the co-design of the ALLPlay toolkit that will provide resources for all children, coaches and parents for

Fresh seafood a very welcome catch With 28 years in the business 1 Fish 2 Fish manager Sophocles Mantazaridis has the know-how to get the freshest seafood on his customers’ plates. ‘Soph’ has been putting that knowledge to work at the Bell Park seafood shop, which has been operating for four months. “Everyone knows me in this industry,” he said. “I do the buying; we cut out the middleman and pass the savings onto the customer.” Already the store is getting rave reviews, Soph said. “I always knew there was a need for another shop in Geelong,” he said. “People have come in for the first time, they’re trying the product and coming back to give us very good feedback. “I know where to get the best. There’s plenty of experience in terms of sourcing. You pick and choose the best quality with local fishermen.” Soph makes his way to the Footscray fish markets each week for the freshest seafood straight from Bass Strait and Australia’s other top fishing spots. “It’s about being there bright and early to get the best fish,” he said. “The relationship I’ve got with the wholesalers there - they know that I’m after good quality all the time.” Soph guarantees the quality of everything in the shop’s window. “That’s where we distinguish ourselves - on quality, affordability and the freshness,” he said. “We’re something new and exciting. Come in, give us a go.” 1 Fish 2 Fish owner Michael Batarilo has farmed and smoked fish for seven years, supplying retailers Australia-wide. The store sources fish from his family’s trout farm in Gippsland, which is one of the largest in Australia. 1 Fish 2 Fish at 35 Hughes Street, Bell Park, is open from 8am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, and 8am to 12.30pm Saturday.

Jayson’s taking stroke in stride
KEEP WALKING: Jayson Killick raring to go with dogs Teddy and Buddy. 161654
Belmont’s Jayson Killick is living proof a stroke can happen to anyone. The then-Portland resident was 36 when he suffered a near-deadly stroke behind the wheel six years ago. “I thought I was young and fit, even though I was a heavy smoker,” he said, “a stroke was last thing on my mind.” Jayson was working as cab driver when he noticed an “off feeling”. He dropped his passenger off before driving home. “Last thing I remember is having blurred vision,” he said, “then I was waking up in Warrnambool ICU.” The incident left Jayson with fatigue, shortterm memory loss and restricted speech and movement. But thanks a good rehabilitation (and giving up smoking) he emerged relatively unscathed. Stroke doesn’t discriminate on age, gender or race, Jayson said. “A lot of people still think that it only happens to older people. I’ve even met some stroke survivors who were three years old. “It can strike at any time.” However, exercise can help prevent stroke which is why Jayson is taking part in this year’s Stride4Stroke. He will join hundreds of people from around the state who are walking to raise money for stroke research and survivors this month. “I’m just doing half an hour a day and counting my steps walking around work,” he said. “Last year I had something like 25km to do but I did that quite easily - as I did a half marathon. It ended up being 37km.” “This year it’s unlimited.” Jayson hopes to raise awareness of the signs of stroke, as well as staying fit.
He has trekked through in the You Yangs and around his suburb, working towards his target of $1000 in his third of Stride4Stroke. “I’ve done around 9.7km which is quite small compared to what I usually do.” His training partners, pet dogs Teddy and Buddy, are all too keen to help him get out of the house. “They go berserk - they nearly rip the lead out of my hands,” he said. “They love their walks.” Stroke Foundation’s Toni Aslet said almost half of all Victorians were not getting enough exercise, putting them at serious risk of stroke. Ms Aslett said the Stride4stroke challenge was a great way to get fit while raising funds and awareness to combat stroke. “There are more than 110,000 stroke survivors living in Victoria and every dollar raised makes a difference in how we can support them.” Ms Aslett recommended the F.A.S.T. test as an easy way to remember the most common signs of stroke. Using the F.A.S.T. test involves asking these simple questions: Face – Check their face. Has their mouth drooped? Arms – Can they lift both arms? Speech – Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you? Time – Is critical. If you see any of these signs call 000 straight away. Leading expert and Stroke Foundation Clinical Council member Professor Tammy Hoffmann said even a small increase in physical activity could have a big impact on a person’s health. “You don’t have to run a marathon. Just 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week can help to reduce your risk of stroke,” Professor Hoffman said.

Letters Dark future of green power The Geelong Indy’s lead story last week, headlined ‘Power shock for local pensioners’, was bad news but no shock for those of us who have been watching the green plans to destroy our society. As South Australia has demonstrated, the more that highly subsidised renewable fuels are used to generate electricity relative to cheap and reliable fossil fuels, especially coal, the more the consumer is hit by extortionate cost and the prospect of Stygian darkness. With Hazelwood power station closing, the Victorian Government can emulate South Australia by leaving its coal in the ground and paving the state with windmills, to the delight of the environmental activists and the detriment of the unemployed, pensioners and industry. All talk, no action What are the net benefits of the current rate and taxpayer-funded pseudo governance at City of Greater Geelong? While streamlining governance by temporarily eliminating third-tier taxpayer representation could theoretically be of benefit, what progress has been made in turning around the middlemanagement bullying culture, which in tandem brought about the council’s demise? Do part-time Andrews Government administrators, knee deep in yet more vision statement compilations, surveys and anonymous citizenship input, see these vague forms of advocacy stumping up anything close to a real return on public purse outlay? The return of a fundamentally irreverent and tasteless floating tin decoration and an additional without-public-input, $50,000-plus bauble might provide distractions in some quarters but neither signify in spades the reason for the season. And why, given that the administrators salaries top the PM’s for only part-time commissions, hasn’t the CBD’s 11am to 11pm trucks curfew been advanced? Where’s the desire to have G21 not usurped and further homogenised by stumping up a Regional Assembly’s stocks (Double Take, 4 November) and by meekly falling into line with its watering down of regional clout, which can’t help Avalon Airport’s underperforming subsidised status nor realistic funding levels for the Great Ocean Road? Rise up, ratepayers Geelong ratepayers lack a representative body such as a residents and ratepayers association, a progress association or a Rise Up group. The unelected Committee for Geelong was formed around 2000, with Peter Dorling as executive director. The City of Greater Geelong spent $20,000 on an annual committee membership until a couple of years ago. Mr Dorling is now the only local resident of three administrators at the City, where CEO Kelvin Spiller recently said it was his decision alone for council to spend ratepayers’ money on rejoining the committee. Mr Spiller said shortly after becoming CEO that he would curtail staff expenses by cutting back on excess usage of credit cards, phones, cars etcetera. Recently it was revealed that 39 City bu-

reaucrats were on salaries of $130,000 or more but did this include motor vehicles, mobile phones and credit cards? It seemed a beat-up when a property owner was recently $30,000 for failing to comply with some sort of historical restriction on an old weatherboard house in Geelong West. Does the City’s planning department now allow what it calls a renovation that demolishes a building apart from one wall left standing? Geelong people have no-one to whom they can turn to stop council’s inefficient duty of care for ratepayers. Ratepayers should stand up for themselves and voice their opinions or complaints on any local issues. M O’Beirne Marshall
Unhappy new year On 1 January many people of pension age will awake to the stark reality of a pension reduction. People with any debt and little liquidity will struggle to meet living costs if their funds are locked up in shares or other instruments they cannot access without penalty. The outcome could be dire. Historically low interest rates coupled with steeply rising living costs will hit the neediest the hardest. Reducing the capacity to consume will flow-on to business losses and higher unemployment rates. Many will say, ‘Well, let the pensioners downsize and release the equity in the family home’. But finding a suitable smaller dwelling can be difficult, especially when it would disrupt family or social contacts. Many frail, ill or elderly have little or no family support and finding upfront funds to cover the fees necessary will be impossible. When these changes are drafted, do the designers really think through the impacts and distress they will cause? Many older people support grandchildren and other family members. Welfare agencies, already overburdened, will
Minister off track on rail The Minister for Public Transport’s response to my call for a fast rail service between Geelong and Melbourne (Geelong Indy, 4 November) was completely disingenuous. Jacinta Allan stated that the proposed 35-minute fast rail service was a phase-two upgrade for completion in 2040. Her failure to acknowledge the importance and need for the service completely ignored her own party’s promises under Steve Bracks in 1999 as well as recent priority recommendations from G21 and the Committee for Geelong. The minister should consult colleagues before suggesting that the existing hour-long journey between Geelong and Melbourne is both acceptable and reminiscent of promises by Victorian Labor for almost two decades. Labor’s Regional Fast Rail project, which launched 10 years ago at an overblown cost, was meant to reduce the Geelong-Melbourne journey to 45 minutes. A decade later we’re still stuck with a commute that typically takes more than an hour. Geelong residents are crying out for this service. To have implied this wasn’t true and that I had a sporadic interest in public transport was outrageous. My track record of advocating for regional transport issues in parliament and through the media is obvious. As usual, Jacinta Allan tried to deflect her own department’s failures to shy away from the chaos and disaster of public transport in regional Victoria. Simon Ramsay MP Member for Western Victoria

be swamped with people seeking help. Far too many able-bodied people refuse to work and pay taxes. In many other cases work is unavailable. Many also do not pay the taxes they should, reducing the credits for social welfare. This is a disgrace in a first-world country. Many older Aussies have contributed all their lives and still volunteer their services in essential areas. They deserve respect and, at the very least, a fair go. J Jones Ocean Grove
Pub’s generous patrons It is with congratulations and gratitude I write to acknowledge the incredible contribution of Corio’s Gateway Hotel to the Very Special Kids Piggy Bank Appeal. The hotel raised $11,429 toward the $1,043,697 total raised by the Victorian community to help families caring for children with life-threatening conditions. The funding will help Very Special Kids support 98 of families in the Barwon/south west region. Sister Margaret Noone Very Special Kids patron
The unforgotten At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 the Armistice ending World War II came into effect and fighting on the Western Front stopped. Almost 300,000 Australians served on the front, where more than 45,000 lost their lives. More than a third of them have no known grave. Born during World War II was the Anzac legend, which helped define the character of our young nation. Sadly, it was not the last time Australians were called to fight, and die, for the values and freedoms that also define our national character. More than 102,000 Australians have died serving our country in all wars and conflicts. On Remembrance Day we honour each and every one of them. At 11am we fall silent, not to glorify war but to honour the bravery and sacrifice of the men and women who serve in defence of our country. Lest we forget. Dan Tehan MP Minister for Veterans Affairs and Defence Personnel
Molestor mate maintained It has been reported that Cardinal George Pell was allegedly involved with the movement of paedophile priests and Christian brothers when he was at Ballarat. In 2000 Monsignor James Murray, of St Mary’s Catholic Church, Geelong, and then aged 76, was convicted and fined $500 after pleading guilty to indecently assaulting a 25-year-old woman in 1973. Judge Katharine Williams said she recorded a conviction in the belief that Murray would have to leave the ministry. But two days later then-Archbishop Pell allowed Murray, a friend, to keep his position in Geelong.

FINALLY FRIDAY
Rocking out with a KISS By Luke Voogt When mild-mannered businessmen Andrew and Steve Kyriacou hit the stage they turn into rock gods – or perhaps the next best thing. “When you put the make up on you actually feel like you become somebody else,” said Andrew, or ‘Ace’ in tribute band KISSTROYER. The brothers have been donning black and white for 15 years since their first rehearsal in a “rodent-infested” hall in Brunswick. Since then they have toured Asia and the UAE, appeared on 60 Minutes and mini-series Molly, and even played for the original KISS. “I think we’ve well exceeded what we thought we would do,” Andrew said. The then 27-year-old co-founded KISSTROYER after he and his brother returned from lengthy trip in Europe in 2000. “KISS was doing a reunion tour,” he said. “We got back and we’re basically a bit bored. We loved them as kids and thought it would be a bit of fun.” By chance they found fellow co-founder Danny Slaviero who was to become the band’s ‘Gene Simons’. “We found Danny on the street,” Andrew said. “He had a sign on the back of car his saying ‘Drummer wanted for Kiss show’.” When Andrew found out Danny already had a lead guitarist, he said something like: “Listen pal, it’s going to work like this – we’re brothers we’re sticking together – you come and work with us.” The band would go on to perform around Australia and meet all of KISS. “They seem larger than life when you meet them,” Andrew said. “They were used to people being at their beck and call.” They even played live for Paul Stanley in Melbourne.
Arrh me hearties! A gruesome band of horrible pirates will take over the National Wool Museum this November when it presents Pirates: the Exhibition Families will discover if they have what it takes to be horrible pirates as they sail back to when the seafaring miscreants ruled the seas. Visitors can take command of a pirate ship, design their own flag and try out different weapons - from cutlasses to cannons. They will find their fate on the wheel of misfortune, discover the best loot to steal and take a pirate selfie. Along the way they will discover why pirate women were just as wicked as the men and practise talking the patter of a pirate. Visitors will learn about the ships they sailed on, the punishments they suffered and the rules they lived by. The hands-on Australian National Maritime Museum exhibition is based on the bestselling Horrible Histories. It will bring author Terry Deary and illustrator Martin Brown’s unique approach to history to life with foul facts, lively illustrations and gruesome games. Horrible Histories is an award-winning TV show in its sixth season and appears on Australian television on ABC3. Pirates: the Exhibition will open at 10am on 19 November at the National Wool Museum.
ALL NIGHT: KISSTROYER in action. “It’s not every day you get to play for the guy who originally did it,” Andrew said. “He thought we did a pretty good job. He was a real gentleman.” KISSTROYER has played in Geelong several times at events such as the Motor City Music Festival.
“Geelong is always fantastic, they’re a real rock crowd and they know their stuff,” he said. “We just feel very humble and grateful that we’ve been able to do this for 15 years.” KISSTROYER will play at the Sphinx on 19 November. For more information visit sphinxhotel.com.au

MELODY: Indie group Holy Holy will play in Geelong this weekend. The music would form the basis for their debut EP and first album When The Storms Would Come. “When we got back to Australia we decided to get into a proper studio and record,” Carroll said. The band now has five members and gets regular airtime on Triple J. “It never gets old hearing your songs on the
radio,” Carroll said. The band is touring with its new single Darwinism which Carroll described as an “evolution” from a simple guitar rift and into “a big symphonic mess”. Holy Holy will be in Geelong on Saturday night at the Workers Club with support acts I Know Leopard and Alex L’Estrange.

Holy Holy has come a long way since its first gig at a tiny upstairs venue in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley in 2012. Singer Tim Carroll and guitarist Oscar Dawson have since performed in Barcelona, the Sydney Opera House and in front of thousands at Splendour in the Grass. “We brought along our own smoke machine that Oscar was operating with his foot in between songs,” Carroll said describing the debut gig. “It was a bit tragic in retrospect... funny, and tragic.” Carroll and Dawson met 10 years before forming the band, despite living on different ends of Australia’s east coast. The budding musicians, one from Brisbane and the other from Melbourne, signed up as volunteers to teach English in Thailand after finishing school. “We wanted to see the world but not just do a Contiki tour and drink piss all the time,” Carroll said. In their downtime the two rode borrowed mopeds through village rice paddies and discovered their respective musical talents. “We would sit around in these wooden cabins and play guitar and drink Thai rum,” Carroll said, “It was a really exciting time in our lives.” The two kept in touch, with Carroll completing a degree in social work and Dawson joining Melbourne band the Dukes of Windsor. A decade later Carroll fell in love with a Swedish girl and moved to Stockholm. The Dukes were based in Germany and one night Dawson needed a couch to crash in Stockholm. Sure, Carroll said, so long as Dawson helped mix and produce a song he had been working on. “I was kind of ready to move away from the folk singer-songwriter,” Carroll said.

IT’S THE value for money that keeps diners returning to Oppy’s Bistro at the Norlane Hotel. The bistro’s fantastic “all-day” menu from midday to 5pm offers tummy-filling goodies starting at just $11, making Oppy’s a great spot for a quick and hearty lunch. Add fast and friendly service and pleasant surroundings and it’s no wonder Oppy’s Bistro has a stream of regulars enjoying the venue. But the value doesn’t end there. Public bar meals are available for lunch and dinner from $8 to $14.50, plus blackboard specials with a variety of meals are served Thursday to Sunday nights. The Oppy’s Bistro classic menu offers a great range of casual and seasonal dishes for both lunch and dinner, including steaks, seafood, pastas, risottos and stir fries.
A lovely display of sweets is in the dessert case for patrons who still have a bit of room left. Plenty of good-value meal-deals include seniors two-course meals from just $16.90 for lunch. Oppy’s Bistro features speciality nights with pasta from $10 on Mondays, schnitzels from $12 and parmis from $14 on Tuesdays, and steak from $14 on Wednesdays. COURSES & CAREERS
Classes that offer food for thought Many see philosophy as the academic battleground of white-bearded scholars. But at the Geelong School of Philosophy it’s just the opposite, said tutor Doctor Stephen McKenzie. “It’s practical philosophy,” he said. “It’s about how can this help me to live my life better.” The school is open to anyone who is hoping to find meaning in their lives and requires no prior learning. “They’re courses that anyone can do,” said Dr McKenzie. “We have young people, old people, senior of-
ficers for the council, retirees, students – people from everywhere.” Dr McKenzie, who has a PhD in psychology, joined the school in 1998 as a student. He has tutored there for 15 years as well as lecturing psychology students at Monash University. The school combines Eastern and Western traditions of philosophy into courses that are designed to help people live more productively and happily. “We look at what these different traditions are saying or helping us to do in our everyday lives,” Dr McKenzie said. “I find it very rewarding. For me it feels like
I’m doing something useful.” The school started in London in 1937. It opened in Melbourne in 1996 and in Geelong in 1998. “The idea was to help people be healthier and deal with life difficulties,” Dr McKenzie said. “It’s about being better able to enjoy life and know what’s important and what’s not. It’s something really worth doing.” The school runs three 10 week courses examining questions such as ‘Who am I?’, ‘How do I best interact with other people?’ Its latest course will conclude on 4 December while its next course starts on 30 January.
The school is open to anyone who is looking for meaning in their lives. Picture: Jurgis Maleckas

George passes on his passion to keep Volvos keeping on A lifetime of Volvo knowledge is being passed along to the new breed of automotive technician at Geelong West Automotive. Lifelong Volvo fan and unabashed admirer, George Bellingham, is passing along his love of the Swedish marque to leading technician Joe Atkinson. Joe is already well versed in the working of top German automakers Volkswagen, Audi and Mercedes Benz. With George’s tutelage, Joe is expanding his repertoire to becoming a Volvo specialist. George worked with former well-known Volvo dealer Trevor Stanley and the Peck and Stokes dealership before opening his own workshop in Belmont. Now it’s time to pass along his store of knowledge after specialising in Volvos for more than 40 years. “What George doesn’t know about Volvos isn’t worth knowing,” agrees Joe. “He has taken the slogan of Volvo for Life literally and he lives and breathes them.” Along with his vast knowledge, George has also brought his dealership level computer equipment, including the Volvo Vida offering full guided diagnosis, spare parts and technical training. Geelong West Automotive uses only quality or genuine parts, following manufacturer guidelines. The specialised Volvo workshop offers choice of where to service and repair Volvos with peace of mind, while maintaining the manufacturer’s warranty. Geelong West Automotive is at 10 Autumn Street, Geelong West, phone 5221 5522, email service@geelongwestautomotive.com.au or visit the website at geelongwestautomotive.com.au to make an online service booking.

Do not wait until they hit and run Geelong Safe and Secure’s Nigel Henning said by the time most people contact him, it’s too late. “Ninety per cent of the calls I get in Geelong are after they’ve been robbed. The burglary rate is going up monstrously.” “And it’s not area conscious. I get more calls from people in Highton then I ever have in Corio.” The single worst thing that can happen to a home-owner is identity fraud through the theft of personal documents, Nigel said. “It’s really scary, you don’t know where it’s gone and you don’t know where it’s going.” Clients often call him to their house after forensic police have finished scouring the area. He has seen the look on people’s faces nearly every day after a burglar has stolen a relative’s priceless jewellery. “Identity theft is worse,” he said. The best option for homeowners is a 140kg safe bolted to their slab, Nigel said. Geelong Safe and Secure is offering one-time special of $1649 ($200 off) on the safes until the end of November. With almost two decades in the job Nigel understands the “smash and grab” tactics of burglars. While the industry vastly improved the quality and price of CCTV cameras and alarms, Nigel said they are only part of the solution. “Prices have come right down so CCTV is now a winner - but only in some circumstances. “It’s fantastic right up until the junkie robbing you is wearing a hoodie and baseball cap.” And alarm systems are no longer the deterrent they once were, he said. “Someone knocks on your door and asks ‘Hi is

SPORT Bats get a move on but Cats still struggle to win LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Despite a gallant performance with the bat last Saturday against Prahran, the Geelong Cricket Clubs season has continued to spiral downwards. To their credit, the side showed great application in the face of diversity, making 383 in reply to 6/489. Tom Treble set the tone early, compiling a patient 61, but when he fell at 6/189 it looked like another collapse was on the cards. However, Brenton McDonald and Liam Buchanan combined for a gutsy rear-guard action putting on 165 for the seventh wicket. Buchanan was desperately unlucky not to be rewarded with a century, being adjudged LBW for 99 off just 101 balls. McDonald was also outstanding, making 75 from 115 balls. But when the pair of them fell, so too did the tail, the team all out 106 runs short of their target. On Sunday, the Cats had another chance to get some points on the board in a one-day game against Monash, but again, gave up too many runs, being belted to the tune of 293 from the 50 overs.
In reply, again too much was left to too few, and despite a breezy 43 to Tyler Larkins at the top of the order, they could manage a measly 138. While coach Andre Borovec may not have the cattle he would like at his disposal, he would be loathe to make excuses or shy away from the challenge, and he will make sure the team regroups for tomorrow’s first day’s play at home against CaseySouth Melbourne. In the Geelong Cricket Association, the match of the round between South Barwon and Bell Post Hill looks to be slightly tilted in the Swans’ favour after they made 245 last week. Luke Ford continued his excellent start to the season, making 80 at number three, while Phil Lang with 37 and David Linke made 34, his highest first XI score in many years. For Bell Post Hill, Jason Grozdanovski returned the best figures, taking 3/37 from 26 economical overs, while Dylan Stojanovski took 2/73. While the Swans will be confident with 243 on the board, they won’t have it all their own way tomorrow, as the Panthers possess some serious batting depth with the likes of Grozdanovski, Rhys Burke and wily veteran Tim Sells in the line up. One would think the first hour will be crucial,
and if the Swans don’t take some early poles, it will be game on, on a deck that will harden up as they afternoon wears on. In division two, Bell Park look like continuing their undefeated start to the season after knocking up 254 last Saturday, with the added bonus of a late Highton wicket to finish off a good day’s work. Earlier, Highton won the toss and elected to bowl first, and when the Dragons fell to 2/33, it probably felt like they’d made the right call. But from there, the middle work got to work, Shane Lymer top scoring with 89, while Mitch Trask made 34. At 8/214, honours for the day were fairly even, but Shane Bremner batting at number 10 made an invaluable 23 to see his side to a much more competitive total. With eight overs to bowl, Jarrod Andrews removed opener Harry Purcell for a duck, before the heat regrouped to bat the day out, erasing 22 runs from the deficit along the way. Highton certainly have enough talent in the batting line-up to ensure Bell Park won’t be counting their chickens just yet. But it’s rare sides successfully chase 250-plus, and the points look like heading to Hamlyn Park in this one.

Out of the wind for fine pinkies ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Corio Bay offered shelter from strong winds last week to target pinkies, salmon and flathead. Tackleworld Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lugt fished soft plastics for pinkies on Monday afternoon, boating fish to 50cm on everreliable Gulp turtleback worms. Western Beach’s moorings hosted the odd school of Australian salmon, also taken on soft plastic. The outer-harbour from Indented Heads through to St Leonards produced whiting and squid, the latter caught over reefs in 4m on size 3 jigs. Successful anglers said water clarity was essential to solid catch rates on the squid, which reached 1kg. Whiting were also caught off St Leonards yacht club, including bag-limit results. Mixed in with the whiting were some impressively sized flathead. Swan Bay’s channel continued hosting large schools of salmon. Drifting slowly with the tide and casting soft plastics on 1/4oz jig heads worked well, although anglers fishing pilchard fillets also boated plenty of fish. A few gummy sharks were caught from the channel during the evenings as well. Queenscliff Harbour produced some impressively sized silver trevally and pinkies. The entrance gave up both species, commonly around 40cm and especially on the run-in tide for bait and lure anglers. Tackleworld Geelong’s Michael Moore spent a few hours fishing Queenscliff early on Tuesday morning, boating to over 50cm along with some chunky whiting. Anglers who picked breaks in the weather caught snapper and gummy sharks in 30m to 4om off Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. Estuaries down the western district continued fishing well for black bream to 45cm. Recent rains appear to have given most systems much-needed flushes. Lake Bullen Merri served up some football-shaped rainbow trout for anglers casting from the bank or trolling deep-diving hardbody lures. The odd Chinook salmon was also caught while at times pushing schools of baitfish to the surface. Travis Inness and daughter Alana spotted a boil-up of minnows from the floating pontoon at Lake Bullen Merri. Casting an OSP bent minnow lure, they hooked a wellconditioned Chinook from among the surface action. Lake Purrumbete still holds the odd trophy brown trout on the chew for anglers casting or trolling Daiwa Double Clutch lures along the weed beds of the east bank at first or last light. New-release brook trout also made an appearance. Justin Burns and Simon Williams recently fished Lake Eildon where they had no trouble boating yellowbelly and Murry cod all on lures. Next week might be worth fishing off Clifton Springs for snapper on the spoil grounds, while offshore form Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads should also produce snapper along with gummy but any surface action might signal salmon or even kingfish holding bellow.
At home, Olympian talks the talk and walks the walk By Justin Flynn Ocean Grove Olympian Chris Erickson believes the key to getting kids to be more active starts at home. Thirty-four-year-old Erickson, who finished 10th in the 50km walk at the Rio Olympics, his third consecutive Games, recently visited his home town’s primary school to promote walking among the students. Erickson’s father, Tim, was also an Olympic racewalker.
“I’m a product of my upbringing and it’s something I try to pass on to my kids,” Erickson said. “It’s great to see in a community when you see kids walk to school. I think Geelong has had one of the biggest uptakes for Walk to School. “It’s obviously such a great way to get kids more active.” Erickson moved to Ocean Grove two years ago. He trains at Bellarine Rail Trail, Kingston Estate and along the Barwon River.
His earned 10thplace at Rio in a time of 3.48.40. “My aim was to finish in the top 10 and I achieved that.“ Erickson said children should be more active. “There’s an obesity epidemic,” he said. “The target is to get kids to do 60 minutes of rigorous activity a day. If you turn up to a school at 9am, there’s a hundred cars. “They don’t have to walk all the way. Just stopping a few streets early and then walking the rest of the way makes a difference.”
