Monkey business By Cam Lucadou-Wells
A monkey bike rider buzzes past the Endeavour Hills memorial during a Remembrance Day service on 8 November. 161650 Two Victorians have died in monkey-bike incidents the past 18 months, including a mother-of-two struck by a monkey bike in a Carrum Downs shopping centre car park last year. In laws introduced in State Parliament in October, monkey bikes used on public roads can be seized, and the offender taken to court and fined up to $3109. At the discretion of the court, the bike may be crushed. Bikes found without a rider can be impounded and crushed after three months. Previously, offenders faced no more than a fine for riding an unregistered vehicle - unless they were riding recklessly or speeding. Roads and Roads Safety Minister Luke Donnellan, also the MP for Narre Warren North, said monkey bikes were unsafe.

“If you’re riding one in public, you’re breaking the law. “Police won’t be granting second chances when it comes to keeping these bikes off our streets, and
keeping people safe.” Premier Daniel Andrews said the government wouldn’t “stand by and watch another person hurt on our roads by these dangerous bikes”. 12325111-40-16
A monkey bike rider who interrupted a Remembrance Day service in Endeavour Hills has been slammed for his lack of respect as well as his recklessness. Under new State laws, riders of monkey bikes in public will no longer be just slapped with fines but can have their bikes impounded and crushed. Star News photographer Stewart Chambers captured a young male rider without a helmet or number plates riding past the Remembrance Day gathering at Endeavour Hills memorial on 8 November. The nonchalent rider then squeezed his bike between a car and a garbage truck at traffic lights at Heatherton Road. Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL president John Wells, who paused his address during the interjection, later said it was symbolic of a growing lack of respect and courtesy. “In the old days, the traffic and people would stop during the service as a mark of respect. “He wouldn’t have even understood he did anything wrong. “It’s a shame we haven’t taught these children about showing respect. We have children who genuinely can’t think beyond themselves.” Sergeant John Blackburn, of Endeavour Hills police, also observed the rider at the service. He said police were concerned by “numerous” under-age riders imperilling pedestrians on local footpaths, reserves, car parks, roads and the Endeavour Hills shopping centre. “We’ve got a lot of elderly people and young kids in the area. “These kids riding have got no idea of safety and the well-being of pedestrians in the area. “They don’t know the consequences if they hit someone and the damage they can do to themselves riding these things.” Sgt Blackburn said police sought information on who were the riders and where the bikes were coming from. Often the riders weren’t licenced and their bikes were unregistered, he said. “Parents should know the riders have the bikes. They need to take responsibility and prevent the use. “As the weather gets warmer, we normally see them come out more often.”

Police clean up drug lab By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren man who claimed a collection of solvents, burners, heat plates, filtration systems and scientific glassware in his home was used to make cleaning fluid has been jailed for drug trafficking. Zoran Dukic, 51, had previously worked in his son’s pizza shop and denied to police that he was cooking drugs in his unit. The 140 exhibits seized during a police raid on 25 February 2015 included two pre-cursors for manufacturing ice and a dieting agent also used as a ‘cutting’ agent for illicit drugs. It was a set-up that exasperated his then-girlfriend who complained of the “stinky chemicals”. More than four kilograms of 1, 4-butynediol double the commercial trafficable amount - was found as a green solution in a white plastic tub on the dining room floor. Judge Frances Hogan, in her sentencing remarks at the County Court of Victoria on 10 November, described 1, 4-butynediol as an industrial solvent that may be used as a cleaning agent. When used as an illicit drug, so-called One
Four Bee creates a similar biological effect to GHB. Six portions of the drug ice - adding up to 58 grams - were found with varying purities throughout the house. It was more than 19 times more than the legally defined trafficable quantity. Judge Hogan said prosecutors were unable to disprove Dukic’s claims that the items were used to make cleaners to clean grills and filters from his son’s pizza shop. On the other hand, Judge Hogan noted Dukic didn’t provide evidence of sales or witnesses to corroborate his alleged cleaner product enterprise. Nor did the then-unemployed accused explain how he paid rent and for his girlfriend’s son’s trip to Singapore. “You may have been making some cleaning fluid but I’m not satisfied, on the balance of probabilities, that was your sole occupation or means of earning money,” Judge Hogan said. The Crown was also unable to prove that Dukic knew he was trafficking a commercial quantity.
In Brief Bashed during carjacking
Instead Dukic pleaded guilty to lesser offences of simply trafficking ice and 1, 4-butynediol. Dukic also pleaded guilty to being equipped for trafficking a drug of dependence, possessing a Taser as well as 12-gauge shotgun and 1.38-calibre rimless handgun ammunition. Judge Hogan didn’t accept claims that the accused had a gram-a-day ice addiction and that he was selling drugs solely to support his drug use. She noted Dukic had been given previous opportunities to rehabilitate from drug addiction during a criminal record including trafficking heroin in the 1990s. He had also been jailed in 2010 for stalking, recklessly causing injury, common law assault and breaching an intervention order, suspended sentence and a community corrections order. “I have no reason to assume your prospects for rehabilitation are good,” Judge Hogan said. She jailed Dukic for three years, with a twoyear non-parole period. The term included 624 days of pre-sentence detention.

Copper pipe paddock fire POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a fire in Hallam in which arsonists set alight a large amount of insulated copper piping. Emergency services were called to a paddock on Centre Road shortly after 6.30am on Saturday 5 November where the fire had been lit. Upon investigation, police discovered $10,000 worth of copper that was stolen during the burglary of an industrial supply store on Melverton Drive overnight. Police said the thieves were trying to burn off the insulation material so the piping could then be sold on. Police urged any witnesses to the incident or anyone who is aware of those involved to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 000 333.

Newly re-elected Casey mayor Sam Aziz. 161794 tures. We’re an example of great harmony.” The council will zero in on creating 3000 jobs from defence industries, including foreign investment from allies Canada, New Zealand, the US and the UK, Cr Aziz said. Casey would also look at economically-strategic sister city relations in China and “further afield”. At the meeting, Cr Aziz told his electoral opponents - in a reference to newly elected colleagues Rex Flannery and Tim Jackson - he bore
Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS no grudges. He would seek to work together “no matter what differences challenge us”. The three of them were later appointed on the council’s audit and ethics committee. The return of seven of 11 councillors in the recent council election - the highest in the past three polls - was interpreted by Cr Aziz as an endorsement by the community. Crs Damien Rosario and Susan Serey, both Liberal members, were elected as deputy mayors.
Car meets are causing heated confrontations in Dandenong South. Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Scott Roberts is warning the “motoring enthusiasts” involved that if they didn’t start respecting other road users, his team would start issuing fines. “We’re getting a lot of congregation in the Dandenong South area,” he said. “They’re blocking roads and access into service stations, more specifically. “This is causing a lot of angst among truck drivers and other drivers with a genuine need to use these facilities.” Sen Sgt Roberts said there was a confrontation between two motorists in recent weeks. “It’s the actions of these people who are coming down and congregating,” he said. “They’re creating these confrontations with other motorists who are just trying to use the roads lawfully.” He said police had powers under Greater Dandenong bylaws to fine those involved in the gatherings. “If they continue to do it they will be fined and I think it’s about $250 a pop,” he said.

Outspoken Casey councillor Sam Aziz has been elected as mayor a record third time - the first in Casey to serve back-to-back. At a special council meeting on 10 November, Cr Aziz was elected unopposed to “continue what we started last term”. “I believe tonight we’re not at a crossroads but part-way up a very steep hill.” The nominated challenges included Casey’s population growth, rate capping and job creation. Economic development, digitising Casey, community safety and cultural harmony were among Cr Aziz’s declared objectives for his 201617 term. After the meeting he announced two new portfolios for councillors - families, and community harmony. Cr Wayne Smith would take the reins of the new arts, culture and community harmony portfolio. Cr Smith would work closely with the three councillors assigned to community safety, Cr Aziz said. In a pointed rebuff to Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley’s slogan for Casey to embrace diversity, Cr Aziz said: “We don’t like the word diversity because we believe we all part of the human race.” The mayor said there was “a community that has a problem with its young people” and it would be supported by the council. Though an enforcement arm was important, the council wanted to also help engage disaffected youth in programs to connect them with the community, he said. Cr Aziz dismissed Multicultural Affairs Minister Robin Scott’s invitation to work hand-in-hand with the State Government on the issue. “The State Government has accused us of being racist. That’s why they made the initiative.” Cr Aziz said Casey was a model of harmony, comprising 152 different cultures, 110 religions and more than 100 languages. “Some countries go to war with just two cul-
A YOUNG man was assaulted during a carjacking in the car park of the Prince Mark Hotel in Doveton on the night of Saturday 5 November. Police were told that just before 1am, a 21-yearold man from Pakenham was getting out of his car at the pub when he was approached by another man. The young man was then hit in the face with a baseball bat or similar object. The man’s attacker then called over two more offenders who proceeded to steal personal items from the victim, and then got into his 2007 black Holden Commodore ute. The three men, described by the victim as southern European in appearance and aged in their twenties, then left the victim in the carpark after stealing his car. The ute has since been recovered, found dumped on Monday 7 November in Aylesbury Court in Hampton Park.

Looking Back 100 years ago 16 November 1916 Proposed military camp at Cranbourne At a meeting of the Cranbourne Shire Council on Saturday, a deputation consisting of Messrs Shaw, Kilroy and Dickson advocated the establishment of a military training camp at Cranbourne. Mr Shaw pointed out that whatever the state of parliamentary affairs might be, military training would be carried out, and for the convenience of local recruits, it would be advisable to suggest the local racecourse be utilised for the purpose. On the motion for Crs Wilson and McGregor, it was decided to direct the secretary to communicate with the defence authorities in order to endeavour to give effect to the
Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society proposition.
50 years ago 10 November 1966 Last show at old market setting The Dandenong Agricultural and Pastoral society’s 95th annual show will be held for the last time in the old market setting on Saturday. As befitting such an historical occasion, the committee reports record entries of 4060 as compared with 3868 in 1965. The show hopes to move to a new venue at Greaves Reserve next November. Not the least of the many attractions is the Miss Show Girl competitions, entries totalling 55, and the ‘fashions on the field’ promise to be the Melbourne Cup of Dandenong.

24-hour victim Declining trade and the threat of 24-hour shopping have claimed one of Lonsdale Street’s longest-standing businesses - Drayton Jewellers. The store established 64 years ago will close in February. One of Drayton’s proprietors, Mrs Judy Sung, said she felt the store has no option but to close. She predicted an exodus of shops from Lonsdale Street as the impact of 24-hour trading was felt. Dandenong traders should find a niche market to compete with ‘the big guns’ when 24-hour trading starts next month. The legislation can only be overturned by a council if the majority of residents oppose it.
But to hold a poll, the council must receive a petition signed by 10 per cent of the community. Greater Dandenong has received a petition signed by 160 traders.

Not forgotten in rough night out
12328552-PB44-16
Exercise Stone Pillow is an initiative of the ‘young veterans’, which in very broad terms means those who have served in Australia’s defence since the Vietnam War. The idea is that participants sleep out or sleep rough for a night and pay for the privilege. I slept only a half-hour from my perfectly good, warm bed, and I paid for the privilege, but not once did I begrudge it because the money being raised was for the support of younger veterans who were sleeping rough on that night. There are many of them. Picture the large asphalted carpark at the Dandenong RSL, on Stud Road. Normally there might be 50 or 60 cars here but tonight there are few, and the gates are closed. The three camouflaged Army Landrovers of the Young Veterans Rally ‘hold ground’ for us. It is going on sunset and the windows of the club are all brightly lit. The people inside are eating, drinking, talking. There is the sound of music, the sound of talk. We hear laughter. There are perhaps 40 people standing about in
COMMUNITY

the twilight, talking quietly. Some of them remember other sounds, the sounds of danger in faraway places. Some try to forget those sounds, and some are determined never to forget. In some ways the sounds are the one changing but somehow constant part of the night that is falling. The RSL’s evening stand-to ceremony leaves only the sounds of the traffic, but then a young man steps from the growing shadows and calls for our attention. He fought in Afghanistan and was badly hurt when his armoured vehicle struck a mine. He is slowly but surely learning to move on, and he has worked hard to make Stone Pillow a
reality in Dandenong. He calls for quiet and the conversations fall away. A young man steps forward, raises a bugle, and the haunting sounds of the Last Post flow clear and sure through the night air. There is a silence and I know what some of those young men are remembering. I know whom I remember. Even the sound of the traffic seems to die away. The silence is broken by Ian Arell’s pipes and now the sound is the haunting melody of Flowers of the Forest, a tune that could only be played on the pipes. We go inside the RSL for an auction of donated goods, and in the light and the noise of the auction the sound of talk and laughter rises and again dominates. Much money is raised for the cause of those who need a hand. Much of the bidding is really about donating. Much of the donating is about caring, and sharing, and looking after our mates. We go outside again to where two fires have been lit in oil-drums and we stand around, talk-
ing, laughing again, telling old jokes and trying to come up with new ones. The soldiers are telling ‘warries’ and explaining how their part of the army was the only part that mattered. We are not all ex-service people, either. There are wives and girlfriends, brothers, mates. By midnight there are about 20 of us still sitting by the fires, talking more quietly now. The club is silent and the lights have gone. People are sleeping all around us, between our cars, in our cars, on airbeds and in swags. We are not all comfortable, but we know there are others doing it harder, and we are doing it by choice. They are not. We sleep and the fires die away. We rise to a new day and a simple breakfast. We pack up and move back to our normal lives. We have all taken part in something special and something meaningful. And a few young ex-service men and women who need help will get it, and will know that this help came from mates they’ve never met but who are, just the same, mates.

Family's grief-stricken appeal By Cam Lucadou-Wells Please think of the consequences. That’s the heart-wrenching advice to young drivers and passengers from a distraught family member mourning Dru Peterson, 17, who was fatally injured in a horrific crash on Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road, Narre Warren South, on 5 November. “Definitely think through the consequences - before you act, not after,” Dru’s aunt Heidi Samason said. About 7.30pm, the allegedly stolen silver Kia packed with six teenagers allegedly ran two red lights, clipped another vehicle, hit a power pole, flipped and skidded 100 metres down the road. The car was allegedly stolen during a burglary on 1 November in the south-eastern suburbs. Police believe the same car was involved in theft of alcohol from a shop on the night of the crash. The Narre Warren South 15-year-old boy driving the car has since been charged with 13 offences including theft, burglary and culpable driving. A 15-year-old Hampton Park girl and a 19-year-old man have been released pending summons for motor vehicle theft. Dru’s older brother Josiah said his bereaved Dandenong family had been further hurt by “judging” comments on social media. Some of the unsympathetic comments highlighted the dangers of such joy-riding to other motorists and had no sympathy for Dru nor family members. The family has denied Dru was part of the Apex Gang, and had made the costly mistake of getting into the car “at the wrong place, at the wrong time”. Victoria Police has reportedly stated that some of the car’s occupants were known to police and part of the gang. Josiah had known the driver. “I didn’t know (Dru) even knew him. They were never friends,” Josiah said. Josiah said Dru was a fun-loving teen who simply liked to hang with his friends. He hoped that an 18-year-old Dandenong

Inspector John Cormack, of Victoria Police, said: “This crash involves many factors including youth, inexperience, and speed, and it has to stop. “This didn’t need to happen and risks to communities, themselves and other road users, and it’s hurting our kids.”

Life Member Graeme Kershaw was recognised for his 50 years at the Dandenong Show.
Even after 145 years, the Dandenong Show still delights and excites. The weekend’s two-day show brought Greaves Reserve to life with show jumping, carnival rides, trade stands and competition sheds full of baking, craft, sheep, goats and chickens. Show president Sue Glenn said the event was a family institution that could be enjoyed by all generations. “It brings the community together,” Ms Glenn said. “It provides an opportunity for city children to touch and feel animals. Country shows are still affordable and easy to get to. People meet and catch up at their local show.” Ms Glenn’s thoughts were echoed by the Holt family from Mulgrave. Annick and Allan Holt and their two daughters enjoyed a day out at the show on Saturday. “It’s close by and convenient,” said Annick. “We like the fireworks and the kids like the rides.” “And it gets the girls out of the house,“ added Allan. In the craft pavilion, volunteers from the Dandenong Historical Society were selling copies of the 1971 Dandenong Journal which commemorated the show’s 100th anniversary. Show stalwart Graeme Kershaw was recognised for his magnificent effort over 50 years.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Doveton serial drink-driver and disqualified driver is appealing his resultant jail term, arguing he needs to keep in touch with his estranged kids. Corey Anthony Van Loo, 33, pleaded with Dandenong Magistrates’ Court to be spared jail on 7 November - several hours after he was arrested in an unregistered car in Keysborough for his fifth charge of driving unlicensed since March. Van Loo argued that a further jail term would jeopardise relations with his children who are living interstate with his ex-partner. His lawyer told the court that Van Loo had an alcohol and drug issue, but was at a point in his life that he was “trying to pull his head in”. The court heard Van Loo required a licence to carry out his work as a plasterer. Over the past year, Van Loo had decreased his alcohol consumption, the lawyer argued. This was shown by the accused’s illegal reading of 0.047 in Safety Beach in August following a 0.157 blood-alcohol reading for a drink-driving charge in Doveton in March, the lawyer said. “He hasn’t had a drink for a number of weeks.” Since March, Van Loo was charged with three
counts of driving an unregistered car as well as two counts of driving with false plates and two counts of exceeding the legal blood-alcohol limit of 0.00. He was charged with drug-driving with ‘ice’ and cannabis in his system in Dandenong in September. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell noted Van Loo had been jailed for three months for traffic offences including drink-driving and disqualified driving in 2013. The accused had not heeded the potential “wake-up” call of being caught by police for unlicensed driving earlier this year, but continued his offending, Ms O’Donnell said. “A period of imprisonment is without question going to happen today,” she said. “He’s a man who’s got a short and significant history of driving offences.” Van Loo was jailed for five months followed by a 12-month therapeutic corrections order. He was disqualified from driving for 30 months. His lawyer indicated Van Loo would seek bail to appeal against the sentence to the County Court the next day.

Woman scares off female robbers Police are trying to contact an unknown Indian woman who spooked a couple of female thugs and stopped them robbing two 14-year-old girls on 31 October. The two young women were walking along Magid Drive at 3pm after leaving the Fountain Gate Shopping Centre when they were approached from behind by a silver BMW. Two girls described to be about 17 years of age got out of the car and demanded the younger girls hand over their mobile phones while two males waited in the car. When they refused, the two older girls assault-

Before the older girls could further assault the younger ones and take their possessions by force, they were scared back into the car by a nearby witness. An Indian woman was walking through the nearby carpark of the Narre Warren Bowls Club when she was spotted by the older girls and they left the scene. The two younger girls spoke with the woman but as she could not speak fluent English and did not have a mobile phone, she could not provide the immediate help they needed.

7 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 14 November, 2016
It’s none of our business but… Soccer player and social advocate Nelly Yoa is sure living in the fast lane. The Dandenong man is fresh from signing with the A-League club Melbourne City, he’s been the subject of the film Offside, and has scored a TV cameo in Neighbours. This month he partied for more than a week with friend Usain Bolt during the worldchampion sprinter’s visit for the Melbourne Cup. To top it off, Yoa has become a father to a beautiful daughter. He and Bolt raced from Melbourne to be there for the birth but weren’t fast enough. Young Amaya beat them by 20 minutes. A defiant accused man told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that he couldn’t bring himself “in good conscience” to apologise to police. The man had been so irritated that he had been booked riding his bike on a footpath while supervising his young daughter on her bike that he shunned the police’s offer of a diversion order. Rather than accept diversion - which would clear him of a criminal record - the man initially told the court he was “not guilty” and couldn’t bring himself to write a letter of gratitude to the officer. Faced then with a contested trial, the man back-tracked hours later and apologised for wasting the court’s time. The judge accepted the accused’s change of heart. “All you needed to write was ‘thank you for recommending me and I promise not to do it again’,” the judge said. “I could have written the letter for you.” A man pleading guilty to two $10-petrol drive offs told a Dandenong magistrate that he intended to “make it sweet”. The man told the judge that he’d been low on cash and fuel on both occasions. “At the time I was in a real bad place.” The judge warned the man - with a lengthy but recently quiet criminal record - not to front the courts again any time soon. The man was convicted and fined $200
and ordered to pay $20 restitution to the petrol stations. Just to “make it sweet”. Sister Margaret Noone, patron of Very Special Kids, wrote to the News to congratulate the “incredible contribution” of the Eden Rise Village Commonwealth Bank to the Very Special Kids Piggy Bank Appeal. Eden Rise Village Commonwealth Bank raised $1174 for the appeal, a part of the $1,043,697 total raised by the Victorian community to help families caring for children with life-threatening conditions. Strong winds over recent weeks have played havoc with the sale of poppies in the lead up to Remembrance Day. Two of Berwick RSL’s best poppy sellers, Jacqui and Garry Manning, had their stock of badges and a $20 note blown away when they were selling outside Woolworths in Beaconsfield recently. They later found the $20 in their car boot which had been open at the time!

Lest we forget By Cam Lucadou-Wells
Scam alert - the Greater Dandenong Neighbourhood Watch president says people are doorknocking in Dandenong North requesting money to cover medical expenses. “A number of elderly people have handed over money,” Dawn Vernon said. “Technically this is not a crime as the householders are handing money to these individuals. “Police have asked if someone comes to the door, please do not give them money and if safe to do so take a photo of the individuals to provide to police.” Springvale’s Hung Pham will represent Australia on reality TV show Fashion Hero. The show’s aim is to break down unrealistic beauty standards. “Being a fashion model has always been a dream of mine,” Hung said. “However the industry simply does not allow someone who is short and not buff enough to undertake the role.”
Remembrance Day was observed early at Endeavour Hills war memorial on 8 November. Students, police officers and veterans observed an 11am minute’s silence and laid wreaths and poppies to pay respects to those who have died or suffered in armed conflicts. The service held by Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL sub branch was kept deliberately brief, featuring the traditional elements - the bugled Last Post, Reveille, the Ode, prayer, the national anthem and the God Save the Queen. The stand-to address was delivered by RSL sub-branch president John Wells. Students from James Cook and Thomas Mitchell primary schools attended. Berwick RSL held a Remembrance Day service at the High Street memorial in Berwick from 10.40am on 11 November and Major Guy Warnock delivered the address. There was also a Remembrance Day services from 10.50am at the Cranbourne cenotaph, west side of High Street and at the Pillars of Freedom, Clow Street, Dandenong.

Program reaches to the regions By Victoria Stone-Meadows A HALLAM based youth outreach worker and gym owner is seeking sponsorship so he can take his program of helping young people get off drugs to regional areas. Glenn Munso from Cranbourne established the Youth YOU Program after recovering from his own struggles with drug addiction. He believes that his history in the illicit drug world as well as his qualifications in life coaching give him the best insight and ability to help young people in need. After successfully running the program from his gym in Hallam for about two years, Glenn wants to be able to give his program away for free in areas with high drug use rates among youth. His book Drugs Do Not Discriminate will tell his story of addiction and recovery as well as include tools, lessons and activities for others to implement the program. “I have just finished writing a book based on my life experiences and the Youth YOU program that has heaps of lessons and activates to help young people overcome addiction,” Mr Munso said. “In order to help more people, I want to raise enough funds so I can tour and go to country communities, Aboriginal communities, schools, and prisons and target people suffering from the ice epidemic and give the program to them for free in book form.” “I want to be able to do talks and give out the program to kids struggling with drug addictions for free through business sponsorships.” The Youth YOU program is aimed at people aged 18 to 27 and uses a non-clinic approach to supporting young people with addictions and violent histories to change their ways. Mr Munso is seeking sponsorship from businesses so he can share his program with those who most need it at no cost to the user. “I am looking out for sponsorship and for people to get on board to sponsor the campaign and help with the book so I can then help schools and communities with what they are going through.” While Mr Munso has done some fundraising

Glenn Munso, owner and operator of the Youth YOU Program. 156507 through hosting a trivia night and sausage sizzles, he said sponsorship is the most realistic way he can deliver his program for free to communities in need. “At the moment we have done a trivia night to raise funds and sausage sizzle but the rest has been through people who sponsor kids through
the program,” he said. “To really make this work I need the support of people and businesses in the community.” Mr Munso’s book is due to be release in January and he plans to begin touring and giving the program away as soon as he can after the book release.
Members of the community can also help Mr Munso help others by donating to his gofundme campaign by searching for ‘Glenn Munso’ on gofundme.com. Businesses or organisations interesting in sponsoring Mr Munso’s program can visit youthyouprogram.com for more information.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Bakery rises, why not? By Casey Neill Persistence is paying off for Dandenong Market stallholder Rhonda Tannous. The Why Not? bakery was bustling with customers when the Journal stopped by to learn about traditional Lebanese breads and pastries. Flat bread, freshly-baked pizzas and money are flying across the stall but Ms Tannous keeps a board smile on her face and has a friendly word for every customer. “You’ve got to love what you do. People need to see that you love what you do,” she said. She worked at A1 Bakery in Lonsdale Street, Dandenong, for about 10 years before opening her own business in Hampton Park, serving up charcoal chicken, kebabs and fish and chips. Chemist Warehouse bought the store so Ms Tannous returned to A1 before applying for a space in the market. She got knocked back - “a few times, actually”. “Then they finally accepted me,” she said, a wry smile creeping across her face, eyes glinting. “I’m very determined. If I put my mind to something... “I wanted a new challenge, something for me, something for our family. “I wanted people to get to know our culture, our food.” With her husband Kamil she opened Why Not? on 23 August 2011. “When we first opened, all the stuff that was coming out of the oven, I cut it up into small pieces, put it on trays and carried it around to introduce people to the products,” she said. The self-confessed chatterbox wasn’t afraid to raise her voice to attract customers. “Usually you’ll hear me before you see me,” she said. The store is open every market day. Ms Tannous and several family members bake traditional thin-based Lebanese pizzas and pastries
Rhonda Tannous at Why Not bakery with halloumi-filled bread. around the clock. Alongside the Middle Eastern flavours infused into the likes of lamb, spinach, lemon, onion, sumac and zaatar, are the Aussie-inspired pesto chicken and spinach and feta pastries. “I might add felafel, made the traditional way, and maybe a few more traditional Lebanese sweets,” she said. A favourite is a semi-circle shaped bread baked with halloumi cheese inside.
“We just give it time to rise properly,” she said. “We work with the dough, not the dough works with us. “We’ve got to wait for the dough, otherwise it won’t come out right.” The baker rolls out the dough into a circle shape, fills it with halloumi, folds it over and crimps the edges together. “It’s easy, it’s not hard, it’s just a lot of work,” Ms Tannous said.
Thyssenkrupp is set to sizzle An egg and bacon breakfast launched Thyssenkrupp Materials Australia’s arrival in Dandenong. The aluminium wholesaler officially opened its doors on Monday 7 November at its first foray into Victoria. “It’s a pretty important area for us,” general manager Brad Foster said. “It’s heavily involved in the manufacturing sector that we target. “You’ve got your engineering and hightech industries that make finished components with our aluminium products. “We’re a wholesaler that stocks certified aluminium rolling and extruded products. “We’ll go out and source the material from the best mills in the world, we’ll bring that in and then we have plant machinery on-site which we can value-add to our product range.” The company’s customers come from the general engineering, high-tech, defence, aerospace, motor sport, mining, and hydraulic industries. “If you’re an engineering customer and you call and say you want 50 millimetre thick aluminium plates in the 5000 series and you need them to be cut to 250mm by 250mm and need 100 pieces, we’ll cut it to size,” he said. Mr Foster said the site was about 1200 square metres, housed state-of-the art equipment including a CNC plate and band saw, and had five staff. “We wanted to support our loyal customer base in Victoria,” he said. “We want to offer them better lead times and the ability to come and pick up from the site."

FRONTING THE MOUSTACHE MOVEMENT Get ready, the Mega Mo’s (and a lot of small ones) are coming. Movember is back and hairier than ever with Mo Bros and Mo Sistas worldwide joining the Movember Foundation’s movement for men’s health, pledging to champion the Mo in 2016 to stop men dying too young. Hairiness aside, the money raised will be used to fund social and health initiatives that aim to reduce the number of men affected by testicular cancer, prostate cancer and mental health issues. Enormous Mega Mo’s - hairy, and metres wide - will be hung in more than 120 locations nationwide to draw attention to the Movember movement, acting as a conversation starter for men’s health issues - thanks to the support of G. J. Gardner Homes. Movember Foundation director for Australia and New Zealand Charlotte Webb said
men’s health was in crisis with an alarming number of men dying at a young age. “The rate of men diagnosed with testicular cancer has doubled in the last 50 years. 18,138 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed this year and on average five men a day take their life through suicide we can’t afford to stay silent,” Ms Webb said. “By 2030 we want half as many men dying from prostate and testicular cancer and a quarter fewer men dying from suicide." G.J. Gardner Homes (G.J. Gardner) is proud to represent the construction industry to join the Mo-vement, cementing its support for Movember and launching an ongoing commitment to a healthier, happier staff. Darren Wallis, G.J. Gardner Homes CEO, said the organisation was excited to proactively help its hundreds of staff - the majority of whom are men, and also women who have men in their lives.

How rare it is to find a home that retains its historical charm & architecture, whilst fusing the modern styles of our contemporary lifestyles. Circa 1912, this unique Federation home sits amongst majestic gardens on a private 1799m2 lot close to town. 11ft ceilings, open fires, Baltic timber floors, boxed-bay & casement windows pay tribute to an era past, but possibly the home’s greatest achievement is its palatial bathroom and kitchen. Seamless transition from indoor to outdoor living takes full advantage of the entertaining areas & private plunge pool. Practicality is not lost with 3 bedrooms all with WIRs, study & 3 living areas. Opportunities like this are indeed rare, so we welcome you to one of Warragul’s most unique homes!

NEW HOMES & LAND
DOWNSIZING IS THE NEW WAY AT OFFICER As the number of Australians aged over 65 continues to climb, so too does demand for affordable and lowmaintenance housing, particularly among an emerging market of ‘active downsizers’. Defined as people aged over 50, active downsizers are cashing in on equity from their often large suburban house to move into a low-maintenance yet sophisticated home in a secure environment. With the freed-up money, they’re able to make the most of their time once their children have moved out. Developer Lifestyle Communities is at the forefront of providing homes and ready-
made communities for over-50s and is giving south-east Melbourne residents who are thinking about making the move the chance to learn more at its Downsizing Expo and Open Day at Lifestyle Officer. To be held from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 26 November, the event includes information sessions from financial planners, real estate agents, decluttering experts and removalist specialists, while a selection of homes will be open for inspection. Lifestyle Communities’ managing director James Kelly said the expo and open day was a perfect opportunity for south-east Melbourne residents to get helpful
downsizing tips from a range of experts and experience the resort facilities at Lifestyle Officer. Every Lifestyle Communities development has five-star communal features including a multi-million dollar clubhouse and recreation facilities such as an indoor swimming pool, gym, cinema and bowling green. The central element of Lifestyle Communities’ developments is its land lease model which allows customers to buy their home and enter into a 90-year secure lease for the land on which it sits. It provides savings to the homeowner as there is no stamp duty payable on the
purchase, no council rates and no body corporate. And, importantly, you still own your own home. “We’re providing homes with all the facilities of a five-star resort,” Mr Kelly said. “It’s a compelling offer for anyone thinking about downsizing to a bigger life.” The Lifestyle Officer Downsizing Expo will be held at Lifestyle Officer, 114 Rix Road, Officer, from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 26 November. For more information, visit www. lifestyleofficer.com.au or call 1300 505 560.

MEDICALLY SPEAKING
Warning signs shouldn’t be ignored Welcoming a child into the world changes lives. The perinatal period from pregnancy through to the child’s first birthday will bring smiles, cuddles and fun, but also tears, lost sleep and stress. Even the healthiest person will take time to adjust, and some women will have more difficulty adjusting than others. Perinatal Mental Health Awareness Week is 13-19 November and St John of God Berwick Raphael Services is working hard to raise awareness of the illness and of the service it offers. Staffed by a multidisciplinary team of mental health clinicians, Raphael Services provides specialised perinatal mental health including psychiatric care to mothers, fathers and families in the perinatal and infancy stages. This includes assessments, individual therapy and group therapy. Raphael Services is available to all members of the community and is free of charge or at minimal cost as part of St John of God Healthcare’s commitment to social outreach. The services can be accessed from conception until the child is four years of age. A GP or other medical referral is required. Prof Marie-Paule Austin is head of perinatal psychiatry at the University of New South Wales and the Director of the Mother and Baby unit at St John of God Burwood Hospital. She shares why she thinks women don’t seek help when they struggle with their emotional health. 1. They think depression only occurs postnatally Many health care professionals don’t use the term ‘post-natal depression’ anymore and instead use ‘perinatal depression.’ This is because women may experience issues with their emotional health well before the baby is born. “The term ‘postnatal depression’ implied that a woman’s emotional health was fine in pregnancy and then suddenly everything went wrong when
the baby was born, which is not the case,” said Prof Austin. “In many cases a woman will start to become unwell in pregnancy and feel worse when the baby comes with the added sleep deprivation and the challenges of caring for a newborn.” 2. They feel they can’t cope on their own The perinatal period can be stressful and many women feel anxious at this time. Any woman who is struggling emotionally should not tough it out on their own. Sharing the burden with family, friends or a trusted health care professional is just as important as going for pregnancy checks. 3. They think they are OK because no one else is concerned A woman may feel that a confidant does not take their concerns seriously. “Don’t give up, trust your gut feeling,” said Prof Austin. “Follow it up by speaking to a trusted health care professional. This could be your GP, midwife, nurse or obstetrician.” 4. They fear that talking about their struggles may lead them to being labelled There are many barriers that can discourage women from seeking help, and one of the most significant barriers is stigma. Prof Austin said that many women think that if they tell anyone about how they are feeling then they are owning up to ‘being a failure’ or may be labelled as ‘mad’. Others fear they will be asked to take medication. However, medication is only one option and most women will benefit from seeing a psychologist or participating in a support group. Anyone who feels they are not coping or who are concerned for a loved one is urged to contact St John of God Berwick Raphael Services on 9707 3988 or see their GP. In a crisis situation they should call triple zero.

Festive season scam warning By Casey Neill A Dandenong woman who dodged a scammer is warning others to be wary. “I’ve just got over breast cancer. I thought I was going to take a bad turn,” Phyllis Harrison said. “The shock of it was unbelievable. “I need to tell people ‘please be aware’. “Protect yourself. Don’t be ignorant.” The 74-year-old received an email from someone claiming to be from Telstra on Wednesday 2 November, claiming she would be without broadband for six days while the company fixed an issue. “I should have had alarm bells ringing,” she said. The email was addressed to her partner, Damian, even though the account was in her name. “On Thursday afternoon, I got this phone call,” she said. Damian was on the phone with the phony Telstra technician from about 3.45pm to 6pm. “They were getting Damian to give them information and little codes,” Ms Harrison said. “They were asking him ‘what are you seeing now in the picture?’. “He kept saying ‘your computer is very, very slow’.” The scammer was remotely accessing their computer. Thankfully, they had no passwords saved on the device.
“They took his licence number and then they asked for his bank details,” Ms Harrison said. “They were so convincing. “They’re very clever people. “They prey on you.” She clued onto the con and immediately called her bank. “We’re getting new cards. The bank was wonderful. They put me through to their scam department,” she said. “We’ve been to Telstra, we’ve been to the police. “It’s costing us $240 for a technician to come out and strip our whole internet. “We’ve got to start from scratch. “They said ‘they’re waiting in the background now for you to get on your banking’.” “We had the most horrible two days. “We both felt sick. “It needs to be highlighted. “If you’re in doubt, question them.” Ms Harrison said that the police, bank and Telstra said the period leading up to the festive season was a key target for scammers. “People out there between now and Christmas need a helping hand,” she said. “We nearly got ripped off.” Consumer Affairs Victoria offers advice for avoiding scammers and for reporting scams. Visit www.consumer.vic.gov.au or call 1300 55 81 81 for more information.
Problem passenger kicks driver out An “erratic” woman jumped into a car in Dandenong and forced the driver to take her to Noble Park. Police said she got into the passenger seat of the silver Honda Civic near Dandenong Railway Station, about 5am on Wednesday 2 November. Once the 58-year-old man behind the wheel had met her demand she kicked him out and drove the vehicle to Bunnings on Gladstone Road.
There she allegedly rammed two parked cars before leaving the scene. Greater Dandenong CIU Senior Constable Riley Wesley said police recovered the car in Pakenham but were still searching for the woman. She was described as Caucasian and aged in her thirties with brown hair. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information.

SPORT Morrish is a bargain on the table By Nicholas Creely After toiling away at his south-eastern football club Beaconsfield, Bailey Morrish was finally given the chance to prove his worth at the Stingrays’ pre-season training in late 2015. The left-footed defender hasn’t gone through the conventional pathway of state representation but a stunning rise late in 2016 has seen him become one of the most tantalising bargains for any AFL club. “It’s been a bit of a mixture of hard work and realising my potential and what I can do - I was pretty unlucky to not get the Vic Country invite but all you can do is go to TAC level and work as hard as you possibly can,” Morrish said. The 18-year-old Beaconsfield product was an enticing prospect for a club that was looking for a player with genuine leadership, athleticism and an ability to intercept the ball. He said a certain dashing Hawk was someone he had followed closely across the journey. “I love to run and carry, take intercept marks and use my trusty left foot,” he said. “Isaac Smith is certainly a player I’ve watched a lot - it’s just his run and carry, his skill and I’d like to take a few things from his game into mine. Morrish had a consistent and exciting season for the Stingrays in 2016, showcasing his impressive distribution of the ball and ability to read the play. He said the TAC Cup was an experience he will always remember. “It was my first full pre-season last year and this was my first year at TAC and I’ve loved every
Beaconsfield product Bailey Morrish has come from the clouds this season. 157392 minute of it,” he said. “It was a great experience, I’ve made new lifelong friends and learnt new things and it’s just been awesome.” This impressive season culminated in another surprise call-up, this time in the Under 18s AllStars game, in which he impressed with his elite foot skills.
Picture: ROB CAREW
But something Morrish loves even more and will treasure for the rest of his life is the prized memories of his junior days, something that reminds him of where he has come from. “On my wall there are three premiership flags for Beaconsfield - Under 14s, 15s and 17s - that’s been some of my biggest highlights so far in the journey,” he said.
Going back to his roots. Gwilt signs on with the Bulls By Nicholas Creely One of Noble Park’s favourite sons will return next year, with former AFL star James Gwilt signing on for the 2017 season. Gwilt is well known as the best-on-ground in the Eastern Football League grand final in 2004 and was subsequently taken by St Kilda in the 2004 National Draft. He went on to play 126 AFL games with St Kilda, including two AFL grand finals across a career at the Saints spanning nine years. However at the end of 2014, Gwilt was delisted by the Saints, despite enjoying a productive 2013 season. He was then taken by Essendon as a delisted free-agent and played a further two years at the Bombers, playing 26 matches and providing a youthful side with some much needed experience. Gwilt will now return to his roots at Noble Park in what is set to be the biggest signing in the EDFL off-season. New Bulls president Grant Connolly was ecstatic at the signing of the veteran, and said it was a win-win for both parties. “It was always on his agenda that once he finished his AFL career, he’d come back to his club of origin and play with his mates,” he said. “We’ve been talking to James for a while, not constantly, but certainly it was always on the back of both our minds, and now the time has come. “It obviously got more serious when he was delisted, though.” After the Bulls fell short in their quest for a senior premiership last season, the signing of Gwilt was sure to have them as a contender when the 2017 season kicked off. “His ability is obviously a great inclusion for the club, and what it does is it allows other players around him to step up, and give them confidence to see someone like Jimmy playing alongside them,” Connolly said. “He has experience at the top-level and, in particular, with a lot of our kids coming through, he’s going to be a wonderful role model for our group. “Our supporters are excited, as are we.” In what has already been a highly productive off-season for the Bulls, they have also signed former Frankston Dolphin Hudson Thomas, who kicked 27 goals in the VFL development league this season, as well as re-signing reigning club champion Kyle Martin, Trent Robertson and Shayne Allan. 36 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 14 November, 2016
“They are days I will never get back and I’m really thankful for everyone for their ongoing support.” With the National Draft ticking closer and closer, Morrish is going in with no expectations, knowing all too-well that anything can happen. “All you can do, really, is just wait and hope for the best, really,” he said. “It’s hard to never really know whether you will get drafted - you look at Tommy Glen last year and he spoke to a lot of AFL clubs, at least a dozen and he had a great year - you just have to hope for the best.” But despite the unknown, Morrish insists he is determined to create his own destiny, no matter where the road leads. “I think I’m 100 per cent ready to go anywhere, I’m pretty independent and I’d love to go on my own path and if I go interstate, I’m happy,” he said. “I’m confident that if I am lucky enough to get an AFL game, I will know I have given it my all.” But there are people in the young man’s life that he owes a lot to, in particular his parents and the Dandenong Stingrays. “Nick Cox, the defensive coach at the Stingrays, has done a hell of a lot for me this year in developing me as both a person and a player,” he said. “I’d also like to thank Mark Wheeler for helping me and giving me a second chance at my dream. “But Mum and Dad have been enormous for me and a great support base. “They supported me and gave me the confidence to get the best out of myself.”
Thunder coach brings pedigree to new role By Nicholas Creely It’s been well over a month since former Dandenong Thunder coach Huss Skenderovic departed the club to join Adelaide United. Now the Thunder has finally announced its new senior coach after keeping its cards close to its chest for quite a while now, with former Serie A Italian Giuseppe Anastasi set to take over the reins at George Andrews Reserve. The 43-year old is a major coup for the Thunder which is looking at joining the top-tier of Victorian Football in 2018. Anastasi, who hails from Catania, Italy, comes to the club with a wealth of professional experience, specifically with clubs such as Lecce and Hellas Verona in the elite Serie A competition. He has an extensive collection of awards in his fruitful playing career but now possesses a UEFA A Licence (Professional Coach 2 Category). This will be the first Australian based soccer club that Anastasi will take over after plying his coaching trade in Italy for more than a decade. Thunder President Ferman Zekiri believes the signing of Anastasi will further propel the club to great heights after an impressive off-season of recruiting and signings to date. “This is a win for Australian football and not just for our club,” he said. “Anyone who has watched the Italian league knows it’s no nonsense football over there. “It is an art form, a way of life, its passion ... and we hope Giuseppe will bring some of that into our game.” It has already been an exciting off-season for the Thunder, with star players Simon Colismio and Brandon Barnes putting pen to paper for another season.
James Gwilt will return to the Bulls after his AFL career came to an end.

Star sprinter Zambora Brockie looks to have the $600,000 TAB Melbourne Cup at his mercy after a magnificent heat win at Sandown Park on Friday. Zambora Brockie stole the show by leading all the way to win his heat by nine lengths in a dominant 29.055 seconds. It was the eighth fastest time ever run at the View Road circuit and the fastest time recorded since Unlawful Entry set the track record in March. “When he jumped out in front it was all over really,” said elated trainer Anthony Azzopardi of his first TAB Melbourne Cup finalist. “Words can’t explain how I feel about this dog. It’s a privilege to have him in my kennel. He’s such a great dog and a true champion.” It was Zambora Brockie’s fourth win at Sandown Park - all in the fastest time of the night and will now line up in his 10th group race final. A win would be his sixth at group level and catapult his career prize money beyond $850,000. However Zambora Brockie, who has drawn box three for the final, will have to be at the top of his game to claim the prize. Seven other greyhounds will also be pressing their claims in the world’s richest greyhound race. The night’s first heat was won by Ando’s Mac, trained by leading NSW mentor Jason Mackay, in 29.69. Star South Australian and reigning National Sprint Champion Worm Burner followed with his first win away from his home track at Angle Park in 29.30. The final two heats were claimed by Queenslanders. Shootout runner up Outside Pass was never headed in his her heat scoring in a brilliant 29.13, and was followed by 20 minutes later fellow Queenslander Tripum. The Lismore Cup winner was well supported in the all-in betting market and he didn’t disappoint those who took the $71 on offer, jumping well from box 7 to lead all of the way in 29.52. Wes Nicholas was in great touch with the ball, taking two wickets for Buckley Ridges against Hallam Kalora Park on Saturday. 161783 every single delivery he bowled. From there, the Bucks managed to stop the bleeding despite some near chances, batting out the remaining 35 balls, walking off Park Oval at 1/10, still 188 runs shy of victory. Pattinson back bowling and breathing his usual fire By Nicholas Creely VIC PREMIER RD 7 - DAY ONE REVIW SATURDAY’s performance by Dandenong was exciting for many reasons, as the Panthers truly arrived on the Premier stage in a spectacular way at Shepley Oval. It has been a stunning rise by the Panthers this season, who came into the game atop the Premier ladder and with supreme confidence they could end the doubters and extractors, who believed they had not beaten any side of note. Prahran elected to bat in blustery conditions, and were ready for another monumental score as they nudged their way to 0/35 early in the day. But that’s when the Panthers breathed fire, as the returning James Pattinson bowled with immense pace and took out the stumps of Blues opener Arjun Dhull (11). It’s been a long time between drinks for one of Australia’s finest talents, but he truly looked ominous as the spectators expected a wicket every time the ball left his hand.
Callum Parkinson made a timely half-century on Saturday. 161782 Picture: ROB CAREW The Blues then capitulated, losing their last nine wickets for just 95 runs to be bowled out for a lowly 130, as the Panthers stunned a side that only just last week made an astonishing 6/489. The Panthers bowlers were tremendous, as Adam McMaster (2/48), James Nanopoulos (2/20), Callum Parkinson (2/7), Justin Butterfield
(1/29) and the returning James Pattinson (2/14) put in as complete a bowling performance as seen in the season so far. But with 46 overs left in the day’s play, the Panthers start resembled a horror movie, as star openers Brett Forysth (1) and Tom Donnell (0) fell in the first four overs to the bowling of Adam Hutton (3/32), leaving them at a shaky 2/1. Enter the Panthers overseas import, Callum Parkinson, who remained calm despite the barrage from the Blues bowlers, guiding his side to first innings points with a classy 50. James Pattinson (44) and James Nanopoulos (35) also made strong contributions as the Panthers ended the day’s play at 5/160. With a lead of 30 runs, the Panthers can eye an outright victory next week, but more importantly, they are now surely this year’s premiership favorite. Meanwhile, Casey-South Melbourne made 244 against Geelong, who in reply are currently 0/85, with Aaron Finch looking in menacing touch on 39 not-out.

DDCA ROUND 4 - DAY ONE REVIEW THERE is a sense within the DDCA Turf 1 competition that Hallam Kalora Park (197) and Buckley Ridges (1/10) are going to be two sides that will still be around at the pointy end of this season. And based on Saturday’s tense affair, both teams are well placed to argue that they are one of the heavy favorites for this year’s premiership. At Park Oval, Hawks skipper Steve Gilmour did not hesitate in electing to bat, as although the win swirled and the rain was a constant threat, it is the type of ground that has produced consistent runs for a long time. Luckily for both sides, the rain kept its distance and the Hawks were able to score 197, competitive, but perhaps 30 or 40 runs short. It was a solid start for the Hawks, who looked to be cruising at 0/46, as gun openers Ben Hillard (17) and Leigh Booth (28) started to score quite easily. But when Hillard fell the Bucks were able to lift their intensity, and produced a wonderful 10 overs, leaving the Hawks at a precarious 4/59, and in need of a solid partnership. The Hawks then dug deep, and through skipper Steve Gilmour (50) and Corey Booth (22), were able to re-construct a total that is easily defendable. Bucks skipper Steven Mullaney (3/21) continued his electric start to the season, while Matthew Goodwright (2/12) and Wes Nicholas (2/36) were amongst the wickets and heaped pressure on the Hawks batsmen. When the Hawks were eventually bowed out after 73.3 overs, it left the Bucks with a tricky and nerve-racking six overs to dig out. In what is every cricketer’s worst nightmare, opening batsman Troy Aust fell on the first ball of the innings, to the bowling of Jordan Hammond. The Hawks opener was virtually unplayable in his short spell, and looked like getting a wicket with
