Abortion threat By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has been remanded in custody after allegedly threatening to kill his mid-pregnant partner and to give her a home abortion with a hook. The man, who was charged by Endeavour Hills police, has denied making the threats at the partner’s address in late August, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard on 15 November. Police prosecutor Senior Constable Tracey Arnold told the court that after several days of the pair arguing, the partner lay next to the accused

in bed about 7am on 21 August and sought to talk about the state of their relationship. The man started verbally abusing her, and the partner declared she wanted to leave him. The man allegedly told the woman she was not allowed to leave. He grabbed her by the hair and dragged her from the front door to the lounge room, Sen Const Arnold told the court. The 20-weeks pregnant woman was allegedly thrown on the couch. Her attacker then locked the front door and drew shut the blinds, the court heard.

Until police arrived, the man made deadly threats, threw and damaged property and told her “I’ll hook you and give you a home abortion”, Sen Const Arnold said. Police found the woman screaming on the floor. She unlocked the front door and ran out to the lawn in “hysterics”, the court heard. The man was found by police on the house’s roof and was arrested. He was also initially charged with possessing six unregistered snakes which were found in fish tanks at the home, including in the part-

ner’s child’s bedroom. Defence barrister Huw Roberts argued that the snakes were owned by the man’s partner. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen advised police that it was best to withdraw the snake-possession charges, declaring them to be a “red herring” to the more serious allegations. Mr Vandersteen warned Mr Roberts not to call the accused’s family as witnesses in order to launch a “collateral attack” on the complainant. The case was adjourned for a contest hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 12 December.

New homes for homeless

In Brief Card thieves get away

By Casey Neill An extra 22 homes will soon be available for people living on Greater Dandenong’s streets. On Monday 14 November, Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced that the State Government would work with 10 organisations to acquire 16 and lease six properties in the municipality. She said the project was part of the Rapid Housing Assistance Program. “We are providing more support to ensure those in need have access to housing and targeted assistance to get back on their feet,” she said. “We moved quickly to work with the housing sector to finalise our rapid housing program - and we will move quickly to get people in to homes. “There are many factors that can drive homelessness - and this funding will ensure people get all the support they need.”

New CEO at Dandenong’s Cornerstone Contact Centre, Stephen Barrington, congratulated the State Government on the 22 new houses for Greater Dandenong, and the $109 million plan to respond to homelessness that the project is part of. “We are dealing with people each day who are experiencing insecure and affordable housing, and these numbers are growing,” he said. “Having access to safe and secure housing is one of the foundation stones that can help people deal with other issues in their lives such as health and relationships.” He thanked the State Government and Ms Williams for “their ongoing commitment to supporting those who are vulnerable within our society and agencies like ourselves that work with them”. Mr Barrington, who joined Cornerstone last month, said there were 100 registered boarding

houses in Dandenong “plus 300 extras”. “There’s more boarding houses here than there are in St Kilda,” he said. “I think in St Kilda they’re slowly getting pushed out because of the pricing. “This is where more and more are being pushed out to. “For a lot of the people living in rooming houses, by the time they pay their board there they’ve got $40 a week to live on.” Cornerstone isn’t just about providing a meal to people in need. “It is a place for people to come and belong,” Mr Barrington said. “People really love and own this place here. Because of that, they protect the space. “Some guests have important roles they take up here. “People aren’t just here as takers, they give back to the community as well.”

Poppy Day monkey bike rider is dobbed into police By Cam Lucadou-Wells A monkey bike rider who was photographed by a Star News photographer as they illegally buzzed past on Heatherton Road and at Endeavour Hills shopping centre has since been identified by a resident. The under-age teenager, whose riding interrupted a Remembrance Day service on 8 November, was described by the resident as a serial pest who rode on footpaths, roads and reserves “most days”. “It drives us nuts,” said the complainant - who asked their name be withheld for fear of retribution. Star News has passed on the rider’s alleged name and address and its photographs to Victoria Police, which is investigating the incident. According to the complainant, the boy has revved and rode a monkey bike around the Mossgiel Park Primary School area for several years. Despite numerous complaints to police, the rider persisted in being a dangerous nuisance, the resident said. “Surely they should just take his bike,” the resident said. The resident claimed on a recent occasion that a driver nearly collided with the rider as he rounded a road corner. “He thinks he’s invincible. The unfortunate thing is he goes into court and he keeps being let off. “To him, it’s like a joke.” Two Victorians have died in monkey-bike incidents in the past 18 months, including a mother-of-two who was struck by a monkey bike in a Carrum Downs shopping centre car park last year. In response, the State Government introduced laws that monkey bikes used on public roads can be seized, and the offender taken to court and fined up to $3109. At the discretion of the court, the bike may be crushed. Bikes found without a rider can be impounded and crushed after three months. Previously, offenders faced no more than a fine for riding an unregistered vehicle - unless they were riding recklessly or speeding. Sergeant John Blackburn of Endeavour Hills

Police are on the lookout for a stolen 2007 black Honda sedan that is connected to credit card fraud offences in Doveton and Endevour Hills. The car was stolen during an aggravated burglary in Berwick about 5.15am on 4 November. Two thieves forced entry into the Hagen Drive home and stole car keys to two vehicles that were parked at the property. Along with the Honda sedan, a white Holden Ute was stolen from the house but later recovered after is was dumped on Telford Drive in Berwick. Along with the cars, the thieves stole credit cards from the house that were used at a McDonald’s and a Safeway in Endevour Hills and Doveton.

Teens face theft charges Eleven youths will answer theft charges after police executed search warrants in Dandenong, Cranbourne, Hampton Park, Doveton and Clayton. Stonnington CIU detectives made several arrests and recovered stolen property at the Thursday 10 and Tuesday 15 November raids. They followed alleged thefts by up to 15 youths at office supplies stores in Chadstone, South Yarra and Carnegie on Saturday 5 November. The charged youths were bailed to attend a children’s court at a later date.

Portable cops revamped Portables are replacing Dandenong Police Station’s service counter during renovations. A Victoria Police spokeswoman said works were being undertaken in the custody and watch house areas at the Langhorne Street site. “The works are expected to take three weeks,” she said. “During this time there is a temporary counter service area for members of the public to attend from 7am to 7pm. “There is temporary signage to direct members of the public at the site.” She said that outside those hours, for nonurgent inquiries, the community could attend the nearby Narre Warren or Springvale police stations. “As always the area has a 24-hour dedicated police response by calling triple zero,” she said.

Hip hop comp fired up A young monkey bike rider interrupts the Endeavour Hills Remembrance Day service. police recently said he was concerned by “numerous” under-age monkey bike riders. Often the riders weren’t licensed and their bikes were unregistered, he said. “We’ve got a lot of elderly people and young kids in the area. “These kids riding have got no idea of safety and the wellbeing of pedestrians in the area. “They don’t know the consequences if they hit someone and the damage they can do to themselves riding these things.” Sgt Blackburn said police sought information on who were the riders and where the bikes were coming from. “Parents should know the riders have the

bikes. They need to take responsibility and prevent the use. “As the weather gets warmer, we normally see them come out more often.” Roads and Roads Safety Minister Luke Donnellan, who is also the MP for Narre Warren North, said monkey bikes were unsafe. “If you’re riding one in public, you’re breaking the law. “Police won’t be granting second chances when it comes to keeping these bikes off our streets, and keeping people safe.” Premier Daniel Andrews said the Government wouldn’t “stand by and watch another person hurt on our roads by these dangerous bikes”.

5 years ago 21 November 2011 Recruits for the war on violence Five men have become the first in the Greater Dandenong Afghan community to join the fight against family violence. They took their message to the streets of Dandenong on Friday for White Ribbon Day, which campaigns to stop violence against women. The men are part of an Afghan advisory group at Foundation House in Dandenong and chose to become ambassadors for White Ribbon Day. They underwent family violence training with Women’s Health in the South East along with about 12 other members of the local Afghan community. The men will now spread the anti-violence message on Afghan community radio and join the community to march on the streets of Dandenong.

Driver brought home the bacon What’s In a Name delves into the fascinating stories and personalities behind some of the city’s bestknown street names. This week the Journal looks at Dandenong North’s Jarvis Crescent, named after a prominent businessman, former mayor and Greater Dandenong Living Treasure. Maurie Jarvis was born almost 100 years ago in Somerville, on 18 January 1917. He was educated in Dandenong until he left school at age 14. At 16, he went to work at the Dandy Ham and Bacon Company as a driver. Studying part-time, he worked his way up to national sales and marketing manager. He retired in 1983 after almost 50 years with the company. Maurie enlisted in the army in 1940 and fought in World War II for four years. He returned home in 1944 and married his

WHAT’S IN A NAME? childhood sweetheart, Gwen - whom he met through church - and they had four daughters. It was at age 14 that Maurie attended his first public meeting in the Dandenong Town Hall in 1931. Establishing a sewerage system was the topic. Maurie went on to become a board member for the Dandenong Sewerage Authority for 35 years, including time as chairman. In 1955, Maurie became a Dandenong City councillor to save the Dandenong Police Paddocks. He served as Police Paddocks committee chairman for 37 years, was a councillor from

1955-1992, and was mayor three times. Maurie built support to establish Wallara, a centre for the intellectually disabled, during his 1959 mayoral year and formed the group in his living room. He was a Wallara board member for 37 years. Maurie was made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1977, was named Dandenong Citizen of the Year in 1982, and was Freeman of the City of Dandenong in 1992. He coached tennis, taught Sunday school at the uniting church for about 60 years, was a Dandenong High School advisory committee member for more than 30 years, was on the board at Scott Street Day Care Centre for the frail and aged for more than 10 years, served with the Combined Charities Committee and the Dandenong Agricultural and Pastoral Society, and opened

his family home to the disadvantaged and lonely people as a refuge. Greater Dandenong Council named Maurie and his wife Gwen Greater Dandenong Living Treasures. Gwen was born at home in Close Avenue, Dandenong, in 1922 and attended Dandenong West Primary School and Dandenong High School. Gwen worked to provide or improve many community facilities including the Truby King Infant Welfare Centre, the Dandenong West kindergarten and primary school and the Girl Guides Association. For 40 years she was a volunteer with Dandenong’s Festival of Music and Art for Youth and helped to establish the YWCA in Dandenong. Call Me Dad’s reputation spreads A family violence documentary that zooms into the inner sanctum of a Narre Warren men’s behaviour group is spreading across the globe. First premiering as a full feature at Hallam Senior College in August, Call Me Dad is set to screen in Sydney on 21 November to coincide with White Ribbon Day. On 19 November it was set to play at Canada’s Marda Loop Justice Film

Women used dramatic make-up and slogan-emblazoned T-shirts to challenge family violence at Chisholm Institute in Dandenong. Their message was that not all violence is visible and was part of a Domestic Violence Awareness Day on Tuesday 25 October. The event also included a clothes line filled with T-shirts to represent the women who’ve been murdered at the hands of their partners this year. Students organised and held a barbecue to raise funds for Share the Dignity, which provides sanitary items to women in need, and a trivia quiz to highlight family violence statistics. The event was an extension of the TAFE’s family violence studies, an elective in the Diploma of Community Services that aims to provide students with the shills to raise community awareness of family violence. Subjects range from recognising and responding to family violence, to trauma-informed care

and child protection. Next year Chisholm will also be offering a Graduate Certificate in Family Violence, with a particular emphasis on violence against women. Chisholm teacher Dr Ilsa Evans said: “Family violence is a hugely impactful issue within Australian society and anything we can do to raise awareness of myths and stereotypes, as well as available resources, is a step in the right direction.” “The objective of the event was to combat myths and stereotypes around family violence while also creating an enhanced understanding of the extent of this issue,” she said. “There remains a culture of secrecy around family violence that often excuses and condones family violence, as well as creating a breeding ground for the actual abuse. “Chisholm believes that raising community awareness not only prepares students for working in the sector but helps to address the issue of family violence itself.”

The City of Casey has some of the highest incidences of family violence in the state according to the Victorian Crime Statistics Agency which uses police data to aggregate crime statistics. The Casey Municipal area had a family violence incident rate of 1,455.8 per 100,000 population in the 2015-16 financial year, an increase of 12.5 per cent over the previous year. The state average for family violence incidents per 100,000 population for 2015-’16 was 1,061.8. Newly-elected returning mayor Sam Aziz said he was unaware of any internal or public event for White Ribbon Day hosted by the council. “I’m not aware we are having an internal event or what that entails,” he said. Cr Aziz did however speak of his support of the goals of the message behind the White Ribbon campaign and other events taking place in the community. “It’s one of our most important events in the year and helps to understand and recognise the problems we go through in terms of domestic violence,” he said. “It also allows us to support and recognition of the victims and it is a critical day we all participate in. “I understand the City of Casey participates in a number events and as mayor I attend an number of events; we certainly participate in a range of events and have a strong policy on combating family violence.”

Festival. The film gives rare access to the stories of three fathers who commit family violence and how their attitudes are challenged in the Heavy METAL men’s behaviour change group. Heavy METAL founder Dave Nugent - who is attending the Sydney event - said he was regularly fielding calls from men and groups from even the most isolated parts of Australia.

Lauren Arena, Sue Scholz and Louise Simcock spread the anti-family violence message.

Casey City Council has gone against the trend of neighbouring councils and opted for a private White Ribbon event rather than a public show of support for the campaign to end family violence. City of Greater Dandenong and Cardinia Shire Council have confirmed they will be holding public events to raise awareness of issues surrounding family violence in support of the White Ribbon Campaign. However, the City of Casey confirmed on 10 November that it will be holding an internal event with its staff members and staff from Multiplex; the company contracted to build Bunjil Place. City of Casey Manager Community Safety Caroline Bell said Casey council is committed to addressing family violence in the municipality. “The City of Casey strongly supports White Ribbon Day as an important day to pause and reflect on the issue of family violence,” she said. “Council focuses every day on ways to prevent violence against women and children, in particular, by addressing the major driver of violence against women, gender inequality.” However, when asked for details of how City of Casey was raising awareness of family violence issues in the community and working towards combating this with support of the White Ribbon Campaign, no answer was forthcoming. “Details of how council will acknowledge White Ribbon Day will be provided next week,” Ms Bell said.

Growing school By Cam Lucadou-Wells At the end of a gravel track, Casey’s newest school, Harkaway Hills College, couldn’t have a humbler setting. Its 13 Prep students share a few demountables and a playground at the school, nestled in a vast paddock in Narre Warren North’s quiet hamlet. Principal Frank Monagle said there’s a strong PARED (Parents for Education) philosophy at the independent school which states that parents are the “primary educators” of their children. “We encourage them to be pro-active parents at home and to be available. “For people working long hours, we’d encourage them to stay in touch with their children, as they can change and grow very quickly.” Home and school life are integrated under the school’s model. Teachers own the academic side of things but each term parents are involved in talks about their students’ overall development with a staff member.

Parents are invited to hang around the school for a cup of coffee in the campus’s parents’ room. “We’re looking for that holistic approach,” Mr Monagle said. “We try to get a community of families.” Its website features parenting tips such as creating an “intense family life” and raising children to solve their own problems. It suggests sharing projects and interests for the family, sharing life’s highs and lows, sharing the housework and doing good deeds together for neighbours. Mr Monagle said the school has a “Catholic spirit” but is open to all faiths. This term, the students moved into the site from temporary digs in Belgrave. It is run by the PARED Foundation, which has four schools in Sydney; this is the first in Victoria. The campus was officially opened by Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan on 5 November.

Defence lawyer is sent packing

12326578-HM41-16

A Dandenong magistrate has laid down the law to an 18-year-old car thief and his lawyer. Adam Scherwinski of Dandenong pleaded guilty to robbery, unlicensed driving and five counts of motor vehicles theft among more than 30 charges at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court hearing on 15 November. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen warned the accused that he was keen to avert a repeat of the fatal car crash in Narre Warren South on 5 November. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted that the “local community” was very concerned about young people stealing and driving stolen cars. “The worst case scenario is you’re involved in a car accident and someone else is killed or seriously hurt. It would be devastating on everyone if that were the case.” As an example, Mr Vandersteen referred to the 5 November fatal crash in which an allegedly stolen car filled with six teens flipped killing a 17 year old Dandenong boy. The 15-year-old driver was charged with offences including theft, burglary and culpable driving. Mr Vandersteen said a Youth Justice supervision order as well as bail conditions - including a night curfew at a Cranbourne North address - had “done nothing” to quell Scherwinski’s offending. “It’s not working. Where is the line for you? At what point will you pull up?” Among Scherwinski’s offences was a robbery in a residential unit in Dandenong on 10 May. A female knocked on the unit’s door about 5.45am and was let in by one of the two refugee occupants.

Scherwinski and an unknown male followed her inside, and demanded the victims’ wallet, phone and car key. They stole the goods after punching the victim, and also stole a laptop from the other victim. Scherwinski was also charged with driving a car stolen from a Berwick home’s driveway on the night of 9 June. It was laden with $1700 of tools, an iPad, CDs and clothing. He also pleaded guilty to multiple shop-stealing and petrol drive-offs in Melbourne’s south east - some after he was bailed on 29 June. Defence lawyer Peter Sublet said the accused’s behaviour stemmed from illicit drug problems, an attachment disorder and a disadvantaged background including education only up to Year 6. The “penny had dropped” and Scherwinski was now willing to go to detox and stay out of trouble, Mr Sublet said. “To sentence my client to further time in prison ... is not the correct way to rehabilitate him.” Mr Vandersteen retorted: “The family he kills in that stolen car won’t give two hoots about what you’ve just said. How do you protect the community when he doesn’t engage himself?” Mr Vandersteen said it was a difficult balance in keeping Scherwinski from the “criminogenic” influence of jail, rehabilitating him and the need to protect the community. In a sentence indication, Mr Vandersteen said the accused was facing six months’ detention with youth parole to start before Christmas. He deferred sentence and bailed Scherwinski “to see how you go” on a night curfew, a ban from driving and associating with co-accused, daily reporting to police and twice-weekly appointments with Youth Justice.

Casey’s 300,000 residents haven’t forked out a cent to support a former cop’s family violence shockad campaign. A paltry $245 has been donated to former constable Damien Howard’s crowdfunding site this month, with no contributions coming from Casey residents. This is despite Casey leading the state for family violence incidents reported to Victoria Police. A “bewildered” Mr Howard said he might have to scale back on his $7000 budget, though fundraising will continue throughout this month. “I wanted to make a really high-quality commercial. “I don’t want it just shown on YouTube, I want it on commercial TV and in cinemas.” Maybe, the lean result shows complacency about the issue, or maybe people are just unable to navigate the Indiegogo crowdfunding website, he said. In recent weeks, Mr Howard - now a film school

student - has thus far fruitlessly approached the State Government, the state opposition, Victoria Police and White Ribbon Foundation. As a cop in Cranbourne and Narre Warren, Mr Howard saw hundreds of households wrecked by abusive husbands and dads in Casey. No other issue took up so much police time, he said. “There are a lot of organisations doing great work for victims but I feel it’s not enough - especially considering the number of people affected. “It’s a wonder the campaign’s not seen everywhere - on bus shelters and in school curriculums.” The crowdfunding campaign ends on 27 November. Every $1 in $10 donated will go to the White Ribbon Foundation. To donate, go to www.indiegogo.com and enter ‘No More Tolerance’ in the search bar, or deposit into bank account name Damien Howard, BSB 063359, account number 10084498.

An intrepid woman from Endeavour Hills has taken on a 30 kilometre track along the Mornington coastline to raise money for the Fred Hollows Foundation. Esther Van Houten is one of about 2000 women participating in the second annual Wild Women on Top Melbourne Coastrek. Before signing up for the trek, Ms Van Houten had been walking with her daughter Rebecca and helping her lose weight while losing weight herself. “I have been grossly overweight for most of my adult life and I have done some incredible things to try and lose it, but it’s never happened,” she said. “When I saw my daughter starting to lose weight I decided to get on board and support her by walking alongside her.”

Over 18 months Esther and Rebecca have lost 72 kilograms between them. “What better way is there to prove to myself that I am a new person capable of doing things that normal people are capable of than doing Melbourne Coastrek?” Ms Van Houten said. “And what better cause is there than The Fred Hollows Foundation,” she said. Before signing up for the event, Ms Van Houten said she hadn’t had much of a connection with the Fred Hollows Foundation but believes it is a worthy charity to support. “We were in NSW and visited Fred Hollows’ resting place, a beautiful grave with a huge rock that’s been carved with his name,” she said. “We also know the work he did and difference he made at such a small cost; $25 can have someone seeing again.” Ms Van Houten had raised more than $1000 for the foundation before the trek and showed no signs of slowing down before the big event.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Estate’s water in works By Cam Lucadou-Wells Every drop of drinking, rain and storm water counts at a cutting-edge housing estate in Lyndhurst. The Aquarevo estate, which was jointly developed by South East Water and Villawood Properties, will boast technology such as an on-site wastewater recycling plant and rainwater tanks that use data from the Bureau of Meteorology. According to the developers, each household on the 460-lot estate on Boland Drive is expected to slash their use of drinking water by 70 per cent and reduce stormwater run-off by 25 per cent. For South East Water, it was a chance to showcase leading home water sustainability technology on a former water purification plant site. It shows there’s a “better way” to use water without sacrificing health and liveability, SEW managing director Kevin Hutchings said. Other saving features are a rain-to-hot water collection system - in which rainwater is stored, screened, filtered, and UV and heat treated before supplying hot water taps for showers, baths and laundries. If the rainwater tank runs dry, drinking water is automatically supplied to the hot water system. The fully-enclosed water recycling plant will treat all wastewater from the estate to produce the highest grade recycled water. The Class A recycled water will be used in toilets, gardens and, as an option, washing machines. South East Water technology called OneBox will be installed on the walls of each home, allowing householders to monitor all energy and water use on an app. It will use Bureau of Meteorology data to decide if rainwater should be released from the tank before forecasted rains. This helps reduce stormwater flooding and keeps the tank water fresh, according to South East Water. The technology also controls the temperature

Each home will be fitted with solar panels and will be set among copious wetlands and open space. Ms Neville and Cranbourne MP Jude Perera opened the estate’s Aquarevo Discovery Centre, with the help of Lyndhurst Primary School students giving a rendition of Singin’ in the Rain, on 16 November.

“We all need to reduce our reliance on drinking water as we deal with the challenges of population growth and climate change,” Ms Neville said. Villawood Properties director Rory Costello said it was a “standout example” of collaboration between the government and private sectors. “This will be a high quality residential community where families can positively impact the environment just by moving in.”

Out of the box. Office plan claims to create 600 jobs A $40 million twin office building project in Fountain Gate is expected to create about 600 jobs. CubeOne, which will house 39 office suites for local, small-to-medium enterprises, was officially launched by developer MAB Corporation on 26 October. The buildings are designed by Watson Young, providing flexible layouts, shared meeting facilities and cutting-edge office technology. It is the corporation’s first commercial office project in Melbourne’s south east. MAB commercial projects director Andrew White said “satellite” commercial precincts were growing with the desire for people to work close to home. “MAB saw an opportunity in Casey similar to what we have experienced in the northern regions of Melbourne.” The site was also chosen for its freeway access, public transport links, bike tracks and walkability. At the launch, Casey chief executive Mike Tyler said the development would help bring to life the Fountain Gate - Narre Warren precinct as a “premier CBD for Melbourne’s south-east”. It was a “vitally important” project to improve local employment and liveability in Casey’s rapidly expanding population and economy, Mr Tyler said. “With more than 70 per cent of City of Casey and Shire of Cardinia residents commuting outside of the municipality to work each day, more opportunities to work locally are vitally important to our residents.”

He is also a renowned strategist and global emerging trend spotter for businesses and leaders in today’s digitally disrupted world. Mr Riddell has worked for some of the largest

and most successful companies and brands in the world. Having lived and worked in the UK, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Kuwait, China, New Zealand and Australia, his understanding of the world is compelling and thought provoking, to say the least. Mr Riddell was the first-ever Chief Digital Officer (CDO) for MARS Incorporated in Australia and New Zealand. He developed the corporate digital strategy behind brands such as Whiskas, Pedigree, Wrigley,

Starburst, Masterfoods, Snickers and Maltesers. He is frequently called on as a futurist, speaker and expert commentator to give insights into consumer technology trends within traditional media. He is a regular on Channel 7’s The Morning Show, The Daily Edition prime time shows, and ABC 774 Radio. The breakfast will be held at the Cardinia Cultural Centre. Cost is $60 or $700 for table sponsorship.

A Dandenong business breakfast with a twist featured a “call to arms” to help Doveton’s unemployed. The Rotary Clubs of Dandenong, Dandenong South East, Casey, Endeavour Hills, Berwick and Narre Warren joined forces to host the event at Beletti Restaurant Cafe Bar on Wednesday 16 November. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams was among the morning’s guest speakers and spoke passionately about breaking the entrenched disadvantage and unemployment in Doveton. She said the suburb’s downward spiral followed the exit of major employers General Motors, International Harvester and Heinz which she said served as a lesson given the pending automotive industry exodus. Ms Williams said the south-east was home to more than half the auto supply chain jobs, with 81 of the 137 tier one and tier two suppliers in Victoria located in the region. “Not one single thing can replace auto,” she said. She spoke about State Government measures to assist, including funding projects in industries that could create jobs for auto workers. Ms Williams said the State Government also had a significant role to play in helping Doveton to spring back from 22 per cent unemployment. “Industry is also a huge piece of the puzzle,” she said. Fellow guest speaker James Sturgess from law firm Macpherson Kelley said finding the people in Doveton who wanted jobs was hard and there was a disconnect between employment networks. He’s fielding job offers from employers and contacting Doveton College for candidates. “M and K have employed three people from Doveton, through Doveton College,” he said. Mr Sturgess said the school was engaging with parents as well as students to make a change. He said Macpherson Kelley was always open to opportunities to put back into the community. “We want to be part of the community,” he said. “We are privileged to be in business in this region.” And it’s been a fixture of the community since 4 October 1905. “There’s not a lot of businesses in Australia that have a heritage of more than 100 years,” he said. Mr Sturgess has been with the firm for 30 years next month and said it had changed dramatically in the past 15 years in particular. It’s now a commercial law firm with a focus on substantial businesses, and has grown from a $15 million turnover and 90 staff 12 years ago to $60 million and close to 300 people today. “It’s a really successful business that has grown up in this community,” he said. Mr Sturgess spoke about manufacturing as “a critical part of this region”. He said the sector had grown by a few hundred jobs in the region in the past 10 years against a downward trend more widely. Rotary Club of Dandenong South East’s Phil Thurgood said every dollar donated to Rotary “gets to the cause” unlike many charities. He spoke about the work the club had been doing, including supporting Disaster Aid Australia and Romac, and funding pizza nights and swags for Cornerstone Contact Centre. Greater Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti said more than 50 per cent of council rates came from businesses, and that the council and Rotary shared a common goal to see the municipality grow and prosper. 29 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 21 November, 2016

Anne Preston and Helen Hart can’t understand what all the fuss is about when it comes to Benga House. Greater Dandenong Council bought the historic home and surrounds on McCrae Street, Dandenong, in the 1980s to preserve it, including the neighbouring Laurel Lodge. The Heritage Hill property, as it’s now known, hosts exhibitions, workshops and music events. On display until early next year are enlarged photos of Anne - nee Hart - and her brother, Peter, during their childhood at Benga. The panels hang in Anne’s old bedroom. “It is a very strange feeling,” Anne said, sitting in the Benga House garden on an overcast but warm morning, pondering community interest in the property and her ancestors. Peter’s widow, Helen, agreed. “We can’t understand it, really, can we?” she said. “It’s a lovely family but nothing out of the ordinary. “I’m just so impressed with how they’re looking after the gardens, they’re just beautiful.” Doctor Ian Hart and his wife Dorothy built Benga the year Anne was born. “I swear I can remember seeing it half-built but that would be impossible because they moved in when I was a few months old,” she said. “I must have seen a photograph or something. “Even then it was a bit like an oasis. “It was a jungle that Peter and I played in, but it wasn’t a jungle because it was a beautifully-laid out garden. “My mum designed the garden and that was her main love. “She could always be found in the garden doing something.” Shortly after Dr Hart died, Dorothy moved out of Benga and next door to Helen and Peter in Mont Albert. “That’s when the council bought it,” Anne said. “It was an interesting concept - it was my house, what on earth did the council want with it?” Helen lived in the home for six weeks after her first baby was born, and visited regularly over the years. “They were the most wonderful people, they really were,” she said of Dr and Mrs Hart. “I married Peter when I was 24. I came from England. “Immediately I felt as if I were a daughter of the family.” She was nursing at the same hospital as Peter was completing surgical rounds. “I knew him for five years,” she said. “It took him all that time to persuade me that I needed to marry him!” There were two years, nine months and four days between the siblings. “Of all the people ever, I was the closest to understanding where he came from,” Anne said. “I did spend my entire life shocking him, and the family.” Helen explained: “He was very, very conventional.” “I don’t think you shocked the man, I think it was just that you knew what you wanted. “My youngest daughter, Amy, looks like Anne and acts like Anne.” Anne ended her full-time residency at the home when she was just seven years old to attend school.

A photo from the exhibition in the position where it was taken. 160725 “I was a boarder until I went to university. Then I lived in the women’s college,” she said. “Every girl needs an education.” That education led her to a career as an architect, which she continues full-time at age 80. She spent 10 years living in London, on and off, and drove across the country to Sydney on her return. There she met her second husband and made a home. Helen calls Berwick home. “When I first came to Australia we used to drive up here,” she said. “Anne’s uncle had a farm in Pakenham. “I can remember thinking ‘one of these days I’m going to live in Berwick’. “It was so pretty.” Anne’s parents had strong roots in Dandenong when they decided to build Benga House. “My grandparents had a house called Roseneath - that’s now where the catholic school is there - a beautiful old place that was built by the first Lord Mayor of Melbourne when it was a day’s horse and buggy ride from the city,” she said. “Mum and dad used to live at Roseneath with Peter. “When I was 15 they were painting it, they used to burn the paint off the eaves and it was a hot north-wind day. “My grandmother called them in for a cup of tea. “It must have been smouldering. It was a slate roof. The roof collapsed.” Anne recalled walking to market with her mother every Tuesday, and said her father also had a very set routine. “He had bacon and eggs for breakfast every day of his life,” she laughed. “Then he’d go to the surgery, and then he’d go

“For years I thought he was listening to the tennis! It was a program called Singers of Renown.” Helen said Mrs Hart didn’t do paid work but was a very active volunteer. “She worked at the hospital on the kiosk for how many years?” she said. Anne answered: “My entire life, that I can remember.” “She worked at the charity shop for children with special needs,” Helen continued. “Another thing she was really passionate about was International House where students from outside Australia came to study at Melbourne University. “They were marvellous people.” Heritage Hill Museum and Historic Gardens is at 66 McCrae Street, Dandenong, and is open to the public from 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Friday.

The Crowley's house located at 30-32 Brookvale Close, Beaconsfield, is a huge attraction come Christmas time.

Holiday homes Here’s one big reason to get into the Christmas spirit this season. Those with the best decorated home in the Cardinia-Casey region will get an extra special Christmas gift this year - a trip to the Gold Coast. Better still, those who do their Christmas shopping in Berwick can win a hamper and $250 voucher to Sandrose Restaurant in Berwick. Star News Group, in conjunction with participating Berwick businesses, is spreading joy across the region with the two big competitions as part of the Light Up Berwick Christmas promotion. Those with the best lit house will enjoy a fournight stay at a Gold Coast resort and fly there with a $400 travel voucher. The Crowley family in Brookevale Close, Beaconsfield, has one of the best installations in Australia. “About five years ago we decided that it was time to move away from the traditional plug and play fairy lights that we had used for years that

had been purchased from the usual stores and move to the next level, initially modifying the fairy lights to run on electronics boards and sequenced to music,” said dad Michael Crowley. The family home is now lit up with more than 60,000 channels of custom made digital lights, each individually controlled by purposebuilt electronics boards sequenced with a mix of Christmas songs. “The display is probably one of the largest in the country,” he said. Residents who want to enter their house in the competition can visit http://starcommunity.com. au/competitions/, upload photos of their home, to a maximum of one per entry, with their name and address. The competition closes on 20 December at 5pm. The judges will choose the best lit home from the photographs supplied.

Dr Danh Lam, an experienced local GP who also trains GP registrars and medical students, has joined forces with Dr Tanya Lee, an experienced and popular local dentist, to create Broad Oak Medical Dental in Broad Oak Drive in Cranbourne East. “Our passion is to provide high quality, innovative, total care all in one place, and working in close collaboration with other health professionals at our practice to maximize patient wellbeing and health outcomes,” Dr Lam said. “We also provide ongoing personal development and educational opportunities among all our doctors, dentists and staff, to ensure we are all constantly up to date with best practice. “We thrive on creativity and will be involved with the local schools and community to promote good health.

SPORT Nerves creep in at AFL prospect By Nicholas Creely Myles Poholke is the kind of footballer that all teams love to have and all opposition clubs despise playing against. And the 18-year-old Sorrento product, in just a week, will be beginning his new life as an AFL footballer, and couldn’t be more excited. But, at the same time, he is anxious about where the road may lead. “The nerves are starting to creep in - my brother, who is my boss, always jokes that in a couple of weeks I’ll be on the other side of Australia,” he said. “I think about moving interstate a little bit, my mates constantly bring it up, and they say they want me to go to St Kilda because it’s the closest club, but I sort of look forward to the fresh start of moving away and getting to know some new people, and I think if I was to go interstate, I wouldn’t have any dramas.” Poholke enjoyed a standout season, representing not just the Dandenong Stingrays, where he won the Best and Fairest award, but he also represented Vic Country and the AFL Academy. “Personally, my first half of the year wasn’t that great. “The stats were there but the impact wasn’t, and I was really keen to get into the national champs and pick up my form, which I was able to do,” he said. “I think anytime you get to pull on the big V it’s really humbling. “Obviously getting the opportunity last year

Myles Poholke is set to be picked up in the mid-rounds of the AFL's national draft. was great - this year was really good to sort of be one of the more experienced players and sort of take charge of the blokes who hadn’t been there before. “The results weren’t great, but I enjoyed pulling on the jumper. “It was a massive surprise, to be honest. A few people actually joked about it early on, but I

thought it was pretty farfetched to play all this rep footy. “There was players like Will Brodie and whatnot, but I definitely saw it as a massive step up for me and an eye-opener into how high I could make it and how highly rated I actually was at that time.” Poholke prides himself on loyalty which is an attribute he believes was shaped back in his junior

Hammond looks to lead Dandenong to the shield By Nicholas Creely The Neil Wright Shield is back - and the Dandenong District Cricket Association is looking to continue its on-going dominance. The DDCA has enjoyed stunning success in one of the largest turf representative competitions in Victoria, winning the last three titles. Many of the DDCA cricketers that have come through this pathway have gone on to play in Victorian Premier Cricket teams. The squad will be once again led by star Hawks all-rounder Jordan Hammond who, in Round 3 in Turf 1, cracked a stunning century against Berwick. The skipper is a match-winner with both bat and ball and looms as the biggest drawcard for interested on-lookers. Only two of last year’s members, Travis D’Souza and Hammond, are still in the squad. Other Turf 1 regulars include the Narre Warren quartet of Imran Laghmani, who is enjoying his first season at the top-level as a spinner, Rehan Majoka, who is being groomed at the top of the order for the Magpies, and opening batsman Mitchell Shirt and Zach Allen. Others who have had a taste of Turf 1 action this season are Parkfield batting all-rounder Travis D’Souza, who continues to impress and Jack Jessiman from Hallam-Kalora Park. days, but also paid tribute to his brother Leigh, who has been a magnificent influence on his life. “I played my entire junior footy down at Sorrento football club, which I’ve loved,” he said. “My brother has been my main influence. I lost contact with my dad some years ago and my brother sort of took on that father figure role and I still remember him teaching me how to kick. He coached me at junior level and we won a flag together. “I owe a lot to him.” With football in hand, Poholke plays with intensity and believes he can influence through the midfield at any AFL club. “I see myself at AFL level as playing a midfieldforward role but, obviously, in the first couple of years, if I’m lucky enough to get a game, I’ll play wherever I’m instructed to,” he said. “But, eventually, I’d love to become more of a midfielder who floats forward. “I sort of model my game a little bit on Luke Parker, and just how he goes inside and out, hits the scoreboard and has elite overhead marking. I like to think we have similar strengths.” But a knock on his game has always been his fitness, something Poholke believes he has overcome, and in a way, turned into one of his greatest strengths. “My first interview was actually up on the Gold Coast and I got a bit of a clip on not working hard enough and that my fitness was poor,” he said. “Mostly clubs pointed out my fitness, but I tested well at the combine, and I now feel I’ve got that out of their minds.”

Stingrays buddy up at Frankston By Nicholas Creely

round-robin match against Box Hill on 4 December which, year after year, produces quality young cricketers.

With the rejection of a 2017 VFL licence, the Frankston Dolphins Football Club has happily agreed for the Dandenong Southern Stingrays to make Frankston Park their home base of the 2016/17 summer preseason. Throughout their long and successful partnership, current AFL stars, such as Michael Hibberd, Nic Newman and Matthew Boyd, have graduated from the Stingrays ranks and played with Frankston in the VFL. Dolphins steering group spokesman Peter Geedes believes the move will go a long way in re-establishing the club in the VFL come the 2018 season. “The Frankston Football Club is the next step in the pathway for Stingrays players who don’t initially get drafted, and the 2017 group of Stingrays will play a key role for our club’s aspiration to return to the VFL in 2018,” he said. “We are also intending to broaden community use of the facilities at Frankston Park in 2017 and beyond. “This is a good first step and we hope to make some other exciting announcements in the near future.” In what has been a constant issue over a number of years, the Stingrays currently share their Shepley Oval home base with Dandenong in the Victorian Premier Cricket over summer, meaning the Rays are without an elite training venue for preseason. Dandenong Southern Stingrays Talent Manager Mark Wheeler said the club is looking forward to relishing the opportunity to have full access to the venue. “To have the ability to train at a venue three days a week with full access to showers, whiteboards, gym and oval without a cricket pitch and the beach across the road for rehab is something the club hasn’t had in a pre-season for over 20 years.”

Sun shines as the stars come out for Twenty20 By Nick Creely DDCA Twenty20 - RD 3 REVIEW Finally, there was a night that was perfect for cricket. With the season so interrupted through the unpredictable Melbourne weather, it was a refreshing sight on Wednesday 16 November, as the sun shone, and with it came some of the best Twenty20 action in Victoria. The barbecues and the beers were popular and out in full swing as the DDCA padded up for its third round of action and Cranbourne continued its ongoing dominance around the competition. There was some upsets, most notably St Mary’s, which stunned competition favourites Hallam-Kalora Park while sides continued to prove their wares while others floundered. Dingley continue to surprise everyone this season, once again annihilating its opposition. There were big hits, stunning catches and some brilliant individual performances. CRANBOURNE DEF NARRE WARREN For over a decade Matthew Chasemore has been one of the most revered cricketers in Victorian club cricket. And on Wednesday evening ‘Cheeks’ was at his devastating best, thumping an electrifying 87 off just 49 deliveries as the Eagles thumped the Magpies by 37 runs. The knock, which included six sixes, lifted the Eagles to an imposing yet not colossal total of 5/156. When Eagles champ Steven Spoljaric (4) was bundled out by Magpies seamer Matin Sultani, the Eagles re-constructed the innings through opening batsman Lucas Ligt (41) and Chasemore, who put on 133 runs. But some late wickets lifted the strong Magpies home crowd who managed to keep the score below 160, when at one stage it seemed the Eagles were going to make a score of more than 200. Magpies opening bowler Matin Sultani (2/26) was impressive while spinner Imran Laghamani (0/15 off three overs) bowled accurately. As the Magpies openers walked out too bat, there was a sense of optimism and energy, knowing that the total was gettable with the home crowd encouraging them along. But constant wickets halted the Magpies, as the Eagles immensely talented bowling unit took complete control. Apart from marquee player Simon Parrott (41), who was aggressive despite the dominos falling around him, the Magpies batting side collectively failed around him. Steven Spoljaric (2/13 off four) was once again enormous with the new ball, combining brilliantly with Cameron Kelly (2/27) to squeeze the life out of the Magpies. Cameron Dinger (1/10), who was the Turf 1 last year in the grand final, bowled with excellent control, subtlety and accuracy, bogging the Magpies down.

Matthew Chasemore was at his brutal best for the Eagles. 161940 Eventually the Magpies lost the game, batting out their overs to finish on 7/119 off their 20 overs. Soccer push for licence By Nick Creely With so much talk and speculation surrounding a third Victorian based A-League side, the Casey-Dandenong region is reportedly set to push for a licence to compete in the biggest soccer tournament in Australia. Both the Casey and Greater Dandenong regions could endorse a south-east bid, with Casey Fields and the Dandenong Showgrounds seen as appropriate venues. The south-east is one of the booming areas in the state and could accommodate a national football club if the push was successful. With teams such as Springvale White Eagles, Dandenong Thunder, Dandenong City, Berwick City and Casey Comets all semi-professional clubs in the region, it seems that an A-League team is not out of the question. All these teams are behind the idea and would like to see it go ahead. Greater Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti told News Corp that the community is ready to rally for an A-League licence. “I’ve spoken to a lot of people in the community and there’s a real hunger for soccer. It’s taking off in the south-east and there’s no AFL here,” he said. “We’ve got the right spot for it - the Showgrounds, which is only 500 metres from Dandenong Station. It’s a big parcel of land, 40 acres, perfect for a boutique stadium.” The expansion of the A-League is one of the hottest topics of discussion in sporting circles. The A-League currently has 10 teams, five based in New South Wales, one is South Australia, one in Queensland, two in Victoria and one in New Zealand. There is speculation that the Gold Coast franchise may be reunited, but there is talk of a Northern Queensland side, another side based in Sydney and a secondary Adelaide side. But the south-east region at this stage is AFL free, paving the way for a legitimate bid at one of the two spots set to be filled by the A-League in the next few years. Geelong is also mooted as another possible destination, but it seems likelier that the south-east would be better placed and attract more support. There is a vast network of talented young footballers in the region and the placement of a side will do wonders in the continuing development of the game in Victoria. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz is also behind the idea, with Casey Fields seen as the perfect base.

Ando’s Mac claims the worlds richest race New South Wales-trained greyhound Ando’s Mac caused a major upset by claiming the $600,000 TAB Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park on Friday night. And the win left trainer Jason Mackay almost speechless. “Just to make this final is something else,” said Mackay following the cup triumph. “Look at the crowd, the atmosphere is just sensational. I keep pinching myself - I know it happened - but did it really happen? I still can’t believe it.” Ando’s Mac ($12.90) began fairly but was afforded early room which allowed him to accelerate quickly and lead through the first turn. He opened a two length margin over Barton Bale down the back straight before withstanding a late charge by the well supported Jesaulenko ($5.10) to claim the cup in 29.48. Despite drawing box five, Mackay was quietly confident his first TAB Melbourne Cup finalist was a winning chance in the sport’s showcase

event. “I had a real gut feeling with this dog,” he said. “He was so terrible out of the boxes on prelude night and came out second last in the heats. But I just had an inkling that if he got the start right like he has done back home, then he can run some serious first sections and he showed that tonight.” Mackay is no stranger to group 1 success, having trained several winners at the highest level of the sport. However to win a TAB Melbourne Cup was the fulfilment of a live long dream. “All trainers aspire to win this race, it’s the greatest race on the calendar,” he explained. “I don’t think deep down that you ever think you can do it. I’ve had some really good dogs over the years - greyhounds of the year and track record holders - and they’ve not stacked up because the competition is way superior here than to anywhere else. “But Ando’s Mac is a wonderful dog. He

doesn’t give 80 or 90 percent, he’ll bust 100 percent every time. He’s not the fastest dog around but you wouldn’t swap him for anything, he’s full of heart.” The win was Ando Mac’s 16th from 29 starts and his second at group 1 level - with the $420,000 first prize elevating his career prize money beyond $555,000. During his entertaining acceptance speech, Mackay was full of praise for fellow trainer Anthony Azzopardi (trainer of the beaten favourite Zambora Brockie) for looking after Ando’s Mac during his Victorian campaign. Earlier in the night, Wayne Vassallo trained his second group 1 Bold Trease winner when It’s A Bird prevailed in the $145,000 feature staying race named after a former champion of the sport. Bold Trease beacame famous for his withering finishing bursts over the gut-busting staying trip at Sandown Park.

Rare day as records tumble By Nicholas Creely DDCA ROUND 4 - DAY TWO REVIEW There is only really one essential rule when playing cricket - always take your chances. On Saturday, certain teams found out that if you don’t take your chances, the end result can be utterly catastrophic. Look no further than Casey Fields on Saturday, as North Dandenong had the chance to run Steven Spoljaric out early in the day. The rest is history... CRANBOURNE 4/336 DEF NORTH DANDENONG 101 THEY just make batting look so simple. Give them a baggy green. There is no better duo in club cricket history. These are just some of the remarks bandied around the traps of Casey Fields on Saturday as Steven Spoljaric and Matthew Chasemore put on a display of batting as remarkable as it sounds. The Eagles champions, who came in at 4/28 late last week, plundered a mind-blowing, and unbeaten, 308-run partnership, giving the Eagles a colossal six-wicket victory against a shellshocked North. Spoljaric (158no), the three-time Alan Wookey medalist, is now averaging 311 in Turf 1 this season, and has now scored two consecutive centuries. His devastating cover-drive was in full force, as he toyed with an opposition that could only stand and watch. He particular enjoyed the off-spinner Michael De Kauwe (0-81 off 11 overs), who overpitched to him regularly, resulting in some spectacular straight sixes. Last year’s Wookey winner, Chasemore (148no), was simply majestical with his forceful square of the wicket shots. Despite having an unconventional style of batting, ‘Cheeks’ just keeps churning out big scores. It is now the highest partnership for the fifth wicket in Eagles history.

VIC PREMIER RD 7 - DAY TWO REVIEW Dandenong (280) is now well and truly the team to beat this season - and in the process inflicted further pain on Prahran (130 and 4/170) in day two of their clash at Shepley Oval. With last week’s dominating display headlined by the return to the bowling crease of James Pattinson, there was a different outlook as the Panthers set about cementing their place atop the Premier ladder. After banking the vital first innings points last week, the Panthers resumed their batting innings with further fire in the belly, belting another 130 runs, to give them a lead of 150 with 49 overs left in the day’s play. James Nanopoulos (83) continued his fine start to the season for the Panthers with both bat and ball, while Cameron Forsyth (61) combined brilliantly with Nanopoulos for a 107-run partnership that steered them to a commanding lead. Blues leg-spinner Nathan McNally (5/59) was

The Panthers continued their dominance with a thumping win over the Blues. 161782 Picture: ROB CAREW a constant threat to the Panthers, but there were few winners for the travelling losers. With the prospect of double-points on the agenda, the Panthers were attacking, daring and aggressive with the ball, and looked on track when both openers were back in the sheds in the first period of the innings before drinks, courtesy

of two ripping deliveries by Justin Butterfield and Pattinson. Once again, Pattinson bowled with great pace, and showed even more signs that a return to the state set-up is not far away. But the Blues dug deep, and despite constant pressure and plenty of chatter, salvaged something from the wreckage. They ended the day on 4/170, with Pattinson (1/10), Butterfield (1/42), Nanopoulos (1/36) and Peter Cassidy (1/17) taking the wickets. Meanwhile, Casey-South Melbourne have endured a tough day at the office against Geelong. After the Swans posted 244 last week, the Cats were irresistible with the blade, amassing a whopping 5/397 as they climbed themselves off the bottom of the ladder. Leg-spinner Cameron Dinger (3/86) was a rare bright spot in a tough match from the improved Swans outfit. This weekend will feature double-header Twenty20’s, with Casey battling Dandenong at Casey Fields on Saturday.

MOTORING Check out Holden's bright Spark By Ewan Kennedy Holden Spark replaces the company’s previous Barina Spark - and is significantly better thanks to having a considerable amount of Australian input. Engine size has increased from 1.2 to 1.4 litres; an efficient CVT automatic sits beside it, though there’s also a manual should you want one. Holden Spark comes in two equipment levels, the base model LS which is priced at $13,990 with a five-speed manual gearbox or $15,690 with a CVT automatic. The higher-specced, CVT-only, LT has a recommended retail price of $18,990. Holden Spark has a sleeker, more stylish appearance than the superseded Barina Spark. There’s a bold front grille and relatively narrow A-pillars. The Spark has ‘hidden’ door handles at the top of the rear doors in an attempt to give the appearance of a three-door hatch. There’s a luggage volume of 185 litres in the Spark, but it can expand to 985 litres with the 60/40 rear seatbacks folded. A large central display unit with a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen dominates the centre of the dashboard. It uses Holden’s MyLink system and is compatible with both the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto systems. These link through a USB cable, to project smartphone displays, including satellite navigation, onto the Spark’s touchscreen. Siri Eyes Free and voice recognition software and steering wheel audio controls reduce but don’t eliminate driver inattention. The entry-level Spark LS gets six airbags, an electronic stability program, ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, traction con-

Cute styling of the new Holden Spark isn’t the only thing you notice - it’s a surprisingly competent machine. trol, hill-start assist and two IsoFix child seat anchor points. Spark LT adds a reversing camera and rear parking sensors. The Spark gripped the wet road securely, was well-balanced through the corners and generally showed a surprising level of refinement for such a small car.

Around town its size and good visibility make it a breeze to drive and park. It’s no hot hatch but it feels good and sends its messages through the steering and the seat of your pants. On country roads Spark cruises with little trouble and even at 120 km/h on the M1 it was nowhere near breathing hard.

Fuel consumption was in the five to six litres per 100 kilometres range on motorways in our CVT equipped Spark, rising to a still very reasonable eight to nine litres in town traffic. This is now a very good city car that can confidently be taken out onto the open road and cope with more demanding conditions than its predecessor.
