Yarra Glen footballer Jason Ball with his 2017 Victorian Young Australian of the Year award. Pictures: CONTRIBUTED Though the Pride Cup message had reached a national level, with St Kilda hosting a Pride Match as part of the 2016 AFL season, Mr Ball said more could be done. “We need to get to a place where if an AFL player were to come out, it wouldn’t be a news story - it would just be part-and-parcel of the game,” he said.

Worawa Aboriginal College executive director Lois Peeler AM with her 2017 Victorian Senior Australian of the Year Award.

“That’s the end goal - we need to get to a place in schools where every student who is same-sex attracted or gender diverse doesn’t feel the torment of having to hide who they are, or be marginalised or isolated as a result.” Mr Ball said his advice for young LGBTIQA people was to not be afraid of coming out or being proud of their identity, and that people would accept

them for who they are. “Being gay doesn’t define me, but it is part of who I am, and I am proud to be myself and my message for them would be: don’t be afraid,” he said. “If it can be OK in country football, it can be OK anywhere.” Ms Peeler’s award, meanwhile, was presented for her work as chair of the Eastern Regional Aboriginal Justice

TWO Yarra Valley icons will be representing Victoria at next year’s Australian of the Year Awards, winning state-wide accolades on Wednesday 16 November. On Wednesday night, Yarra Glen footballer Jason Ball and Worawa Aboriginal College executive director Lois Peeler were announced as the 2017 Victorian Young Australian of the Year and Victorian Senior Australian of the Year by Governor Linda Dessau and Anthony Howard QC at Melbourne’s Government House. Mr Ball, 28, received his award for his work in promoting LGBTIQA inclusion and diversity in sport and schools, after being the first footballer to come out as gay at any level of the sport. Yarra Glen Football Club, where Mr Ball plays, rallied behind him and the Pride Cup was started in 2014 to address homophobia in the sport, drawing large crowds and celebrity speakers each year. Speaking to the Mail on Thursday morning, Mr Ball said the news was “still sinking in”, and that he was “very proud and very honoured” to be representing his state with the award. He said that he felt the award was an acknowledgement of his work in promoting inclusion for same-sex attracted and gender-diverse people, but was also timely with the ongoing debate around marriage equality and the Safe Schools program. “We need people to be visible and proud and be the change they want to see in the world, when it comes to fighting for our rights,” Mr Ball said. “As a former ambassador for the (Safe Schools) program, I’ve seen the great work it’s done. “I’m just as passionate about that setting in terms of school as I am for sport - in terms of members of our community ... if they don’t feel safe and included and welcome, it has a terrible flow-on effect for their lives.”

Advisory Committee, executive director at Worawa Aboriginal College and former member of pop group The Sapphires. She said she was part of the “founding family” for the college, with her late sister, Hyllus Maris, founding the school. “My work is to build on the vision of Hyllus and those who worked to establish Victoria’s first Aboriginal school,” she said. “Today, Worawa aims to provide preferred futures for our young Aboriginal women through a holistic education program based on an integrated academic, wellbeing and culture program.” Worawa is a boarding school for Aboriginal women for high school Years 7 to 10, and Ms Peeler said the school addresses the “intellectual, social, physical, emotional and cultural wellbeing of each student”, through mainstream education and Aboriginal pedagogy. Her work as chair of the ERAJAC involved liaising with government agencies, community organisations and elders to address issues in the Aboriginal community - a focus of this work was engaging youth with “education, sport and cultural strengthening”, aimed at diverting young people away from the justice system. She said her work over the years had been driven by “a passion to make a difference” in the experiences of Aboriginal people. “Many of my family members were at the forefront of bringing change to improve the conditions for our Aboriginal communities,” she said. “I walk in their footsteps - it’s in my DNA.” Both Ms Peeler and Mr Ball will represent the state at the annual Australian of the Year Awards on 26 January, 2017 in Canberra, where both will run against other state representatives for the national award.

Helping to raise money for these projects, SHIP will be holding a car boot sale this Saturday, where there will be a range of paraphernalia available at bargain prices. Helen Campbell-Drury founder of SHIP says that it’s important to support the local pool as it’s the only indoor pool Healesville has. “We all use the pool and so we all need to do our bit to ensure that it remains open and functioning properly,” she said. Helen invites everyone to come down on Saturday to take a look at the many items that will be for sale and suggests that people can also set up their own car boot sales with a $10 donation to SHIP. “The more the merrier, everyone can come down and grab a bargain or they can give a 10 dollar donation to us and set up their own car boot sale,” she said. The car boot sale will be held at Healesville High school on Saturday 26 November from 7am until noon.

THE Support Healesville Indoor Pool (SHIP) group will be holding a car boot sale on Saturday 26 November at Healesville High School to raise funds for the Jack Hort Memorial Indoor Pool. The pool which has been struggling financially in recent years was closed over the October school holidays for wellneeded maintenance work, requiring the replacement of pool tiles. So far this year, the Jack Hort Memorial Indoor Pool has undergone a range of maintenance works, which were badly needed, according to manager Ross Ilsley. “We’ve installed shower cubicles and changing cubicles in the ladies change-room, we have upgraded the hot water systems in both showers and very excitedly put a gas heater in the males change room; we also put a silicone coating over the roof, new signage in front of the building and a new

street sign,” Ross said. All of this he emphasises could not have been done without the help of the local community. “It was built by the community and has basically survived because of the involvement from the community,” he said. Along with the maintenance works of replacing many of the tiles in the pool, the swimming pool also received an Xray which scanned the concrete shell of the pool for structural weak points. “We found we had a few cracks in the pool which were then repaired while the pool was still drained, so structurally the pool has a very clean bill of health,” he said. Although the recent maintenance is finished, Ross says there is still a long list of projects which need to be completed. “We’re hoping to replace the roof as it occasionally leaks, the pool concourse also needs to be repainted, and we need to upgrade the pool filters.”

Yarra Glen Pre-school students Alice, Taylor, Leorah, Flynn, Isabella, Ruby and Kayla with Yarra Glen Grand Hotel's Craig Barnett and Picture: Jesse Graham teacher Belinda Hudson. 162009

Pub’s cheers to all By Jesse Graham YARRA Glen’s kindergarten will be one step closer to renovating its entrance, following a $1000 donation from the town’s pub. On Tuesday, 15 November, Yarra Glen Grand Hotel owner Craig Barnett visited the Yarra Glen PreSchool to present a $1000 cheque to teacher Belinda Hudson. The donation came as a result of the pub’s weekly Friday night raffle, where profits are saved up until a $1000 cheque can be given to an or-

ganisation or group in town. Ms Hudson said the money would go towards renovating the foyer of the pre-school, allowing for easier access for visitors. “We’ve got the vision of putting an extra three metres on, making it more accessible to families who are coming in with prams, and the disabled,” she said. “We do have parents’ days and grandparents' days and those sorts of things, (but) we don’t actually have disability access, really.

“It’s something that the kinder’s looking at, because we haven’t done any renovations in that respect for over 16 years.” Ms Hudson said the pre-school was “absolutely rapt” with the donation, which they said came out of the blue. Mr Barnett said there had been plenty of “community involvement” in the raffles, where tickets are purchased for $2 and a meat tray, venue voucher and six pack of beer are on offer. A local’s draw is also held on the

Breakfast is making waves By Jesse Graham A BREAKFAST for a good cause will be held this Friday 25 November, with groups coming together to help change the story of violence against women. Healesville Change the Story will host a community breakfast from 6.30am to 10.30am on Friday morning in the area between the Memo Hall and the Healesville Community Link, to mark White Ribbon Day. Member Joel Hawting said Change the Story was made up of representatives from groups all over the valley, including Healesville Interchurch Community Care Incorporated (HICCI), Eastern Health, Yarra Ranges Council, Eastern Legal Community Legal Centre, Healesville Fitness Centre, Liberty Family Church and the Rotary Club of Healesville. The goal of the group is to pro-

mote healthy family relationships, with the aim of preventing family violence and violence against women. “It’s all about seeing individuals and families be as healthy as they can be, recognising that family violence is an issue that is impacting our local community, like many communities,” Mr Hawting said. “We are a group of organisations and individuals who are united around the cause of seeing people flourish in life - so whether that’s young people growing to be the best they can be, free of hindrances in growing up, or whether that’s men learning how to be the best fathers and best blokes they can be, or women being free to flourish in whatever roles they fulfil ... that’s why we exist. “We really believe that we can change the story around family violence - that Healesville doesn’t

have to be just another one of those statistics of towns where the issue is rife - we can actually see instances of domestic violence rapidly decrease, and instead, see healthy families and healthy individuals.” The breakfast will be the group’s official launch, and promotional materials will be available on the day, with members present to chat to residents over a barbecue breakfast. Mr Hawting said the group would not duplicate services already offered by groups or organisations, but would be able to share information about programs and services, using a Facebook page as a base. He said Healesville Coles was donating all the food supplies for the event, out of support for the cause. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/healesvillechangethestory

night, which jackpots if the recipient is not present - he said the jackpot was now up to $1200. “The locals are supporting the hotel, and in turn, I support local communities,” Mr Barnett said. The Yarra Glen Primary School, RSL, CFA, Men’s Shed and tennis club are among the recipients of donations thus far. For more information, visit www.yarravalleygrand.com.au between 6-7pm on Fridays, or call 9730 1230.

Tune in to a local channel A YOUTUBE channel documenting the stories of Coldstream residents will be launched on Friday afternoon at the Coldstream Community Centre. Coldstream Stories, a YouTube channel with videos about Coldstream residents, will be launched from 3.15pm to 7pm on Friday 25 November, at the Community Centre at 12 Kelso Street. The event will co-incide with consultation for Coldstream Voice’s Melba Pathway - a path to connect the town and the Melba estate, with resting places, called “pearls”, dotted along the path. Melba Group president Louissa Tickner said that listening to people’s stories, through the Coldstream Stories channel, is helping to inspire ideas for artworks, infrastructure and sculptures for the pearls. A presentation on the pathway will be held at 6pm. For more information, email Yolande Pickett at yolande@cumulusrising.com

A DELACOMBE man has been remanded to face a string of serious charges in court, after crashing into cars and leading police on a pursuit on Sunday afternoon. Police said a car driven by a 35-year-old Delacombe man was involved in a hit-and-run crash in a residential street in Healesville, about 3.15pm on Sunday 20 November. The car, which was bearing stolen plates, was then involved in a second hit-and-run on the Maroondah Highway in Healesville, before being involved in a short pursuit with police officers. Police terminated the pursuit, before spotting the car a short time later in another residential street - the man then allegedly rammed Healesville police’s patrol car with his car, before driving up a driveway and down a footpath and flight of stairs, crashing into the footpath at the corner of the Maroondah Highway and Badger Creek Road. Police located and chased the man, with help from members of the public - the man then entered the Watts River, followed by police officers who then capsicum sprayed the man. He was arrested and remanded in custody, to face Ringwood Magistrates’ Court. He is expected to face numerous charges, including evading police, reckless conduct endangering life and theft of number plates, among others.

Tractors taken POLICE are searching for information after thieves made off with a truck and tractors worth $200,000 from a Coldstream property over the weekend. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant, Adrian Berardi, said that between 5pm on Friday 18 and 6am on Monday 21 November, thieves rammed a fence at a storage yard on Coldstream West Road. Det Sgt Berardi said the thieves then stole an Isuzu truck, which had two Kubota tractors on the back. Each of the tractors was fitted with slashers, and the estimated value of the three stolen vehicles is $200,000. Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to file a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Backing bingle A CASTELLA man will face court after crashing into a parked car in Yarra Glen and fleeing the scene on Thursday 17 November. Yarra Glen police Sergeant Richard Coulson said the 38-year-old man reversed out of a parking bay and into another car, pushing the car into a garden bed. He then drove away, before being located by police in Castella. Sgt Coulson said the man will be charged on summons for failing to report a collision, driving while disqualified and failing to accompany police for a breath test.

Break-in attempt POLICE are appealing for witnesses to come forward, after an attempted burglary at a Healesville pavilion last week. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Adrian Berardi said that between 9pm on Thursday 10 November and 7.30pm on Thursday 17 November, would-be thieves attempted to force open a roller door at a community pavilion on Maroondah Highway in Healesville. Though the door was damaged, the unknown persons were not able to break in. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to file a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au

Holistic medicine for wellbeing COMPLEMENTARY Medicine (CM) can be defined as a complete or holistic system of medicine that utilises the scientific study or practice of diagnosing, treating and preventing disease or disorders of the body or mind. CM recognises that chronic illness often affects multiple body systems and that treatment should aim to restore balance to the whole person while providing therapeutic relief. Examples of CM include herbal medicine, nutritional medicine and body work therapies. CM has a long history of use. About 2500 years ago, diet therapy was being used in China, and the ancient Greeks are the first documented

practitioners of Western herbal medicine. Modern pharmaceutical drugs such as Aspirin and ephedrine were developed from plants. Currently, two out of three Australians use CM on a daily basis. This number rises to 87 per cent in patient groups who actively seek help

with serious chronic illness. CM has a growing body of evidence supporting its use, while its growing popularity is, in part, related to its individualised patient care model. Using CM requires patient input such as dietary change and lifestyle tweaks, and many people feel a great sense of satisfaction that they are taking control of their wellbeing. It can greatly benefit those struggling to resolve long-standing health issues or feel like an alternative perspective may help. So which conditions get the best outcomes? Call goes out for toys By Jesse Graham YARRA Valley residents are being called on to lend a hand and help to brighten up a family’s Christmas, with a Healesville charity trying to gather $6000 worth of toys. Healesville Interchurch Community Care (HICCI) is gathering donations of new toys ahead of Christmas, after its annual donation of $6000 worth of toys from a not-for-profit organisation fell through. The donated toys are used for HICCI’s annual Christmas shop, where families who are experiencing financial difficulties can come and choose toys for Christmas. HICCI executive officer Alison Gommers said that without the regular toy donation, it would be harder to get toys together for those families. “When the people come in, they choose what their child might like,” she said. “For some, that is their gifts.” “Some families were also looking for their grandchildren, but we’re going to be so reduced this year that’s just not going to happen - it’s not going to be what it was in the past.” Ms Gommers urged anyone going Christmas shopping to spare a few dollars and buy a new toy - such as arts and crafts items, Lego, books and board games - to donate to the appeal. “Just anything, because we’re stuck,” she said. “These are difficult times for everyone, anyway, finding extra money. “It’d make the difference to a child’s Christmas.” She said HICCI had 4600 occurrences in the 2015-'16 financial year where they helped individuals and families, with food hampers making up 1839 of those incidents.

Healesville Community Link's Karen Roberts, HICCI's Alison Gommers and Sheree Laumen, and Healesville Community Bank's Cheryl McGeorge are calling for toy donations for Christmas. 161999 Picture: ROB CAREW HICCI clients will also receive a Christmas hamper with donated cakes from the Lions Club of Healesville, ham and plum pudding - Ms Gommers said the hampers would be handed out as normal. A decade of green action A PROJECT that aims to improve the quality of land, water and natural habitat in the Yarra Valley, has celebrated its 10th birthday. Yarra4Life celebrated a decade of environmental achievement across the Yarra Valley with an event at ‘Tibooburra’ in the Upper Yarra, a property whose owners, the Kerr family, are heavily involved in conservation and sustainable land management. Yarra4Life is a collaborative project that has been able to bring together a range of individuals, groups and organisations to deliver projects that make tangible environmental improvements and encourage and educate individuals and businesses about the need to invest in improving the Yarra environment. This includes the protection and enhancement of priority native vegetation, which will also assist in the preservation of the Helmeted Honeyeater and Leadbeater’s Possum. Tibooburra has about 10 per cent of its 500 hectare grazing and viticulture property dedicated to nature conservation. Both the Port Phillip and Westernport CMA and Melbourne Water have supported a range of environmental projects on the property, including revegetation works to connect remnant vegetation and stream front works. Port Phillip and Westernport CMA’s chief executive officer, David Buntine, said Yarra4Life had grown into a fantastic collaborative project. “I am very proud of the achievements that have been made by our partners and property owners involved in the project, such as the Kerr family, and I look forward to another 10 years of action across the Yarra Valley,” Mr Buntine said. Letters I’VE learnt that the Yarra Ranges Council has supported a proposal to have 30 metres either side of the Yarra River fenced off. This makes a 60-metre swath of grazing land put out of use. Many unanswered questions remain. First, it will create a fire hazard through the Yarra Valley. The shire has indicated they will not maintain the vegetation and trees in the zone. Subsequently the fire can destroy the vegetation, trees and animals which the fenced off zone is designed to protect. Furthermore, cattle will be standing in 40-degree heat without shade. Newly planted trees take some 20 years before they can provide adequate shade for cattle. Non-domesticated animals will not be able to access water, such as deer and kangaroos, in non-farm areas. Kangaroos can become entangled in wires if they jump. In time the vegetation not maintained will become so thick it will be almost impenetrable to walkers and fishermen due to blackberry bushes, thus having the opposite effect to that which is intended. Farmers will not be able to take refuge in the river in the event of fire due to the 30 metres of scrub which will thicken over time. Ken Ismail, Yarra Junction.

Slow as a wet week IN REGARDS to the story ‘NBN fury voiced’ (‘Mail’, 8 November, 2016), I recently connected to the NBN and have been bitterly disappointed. It took seven days for my email to become active and this was followed by a four-day complete outage with no phone, internet or email. NBN people were very pleasant

to speak to when you finally got onto somebody. However, they could give no explanations as to why the service was out or why the email would take up to eight days to connect. I use my email for family contact; therefore, I do not send or receive a lot of emails. Since connecting to NBN when I hit send/receive, I get two error messages and then on the third attempt my mail arrives. However, I could go and make a cup of tea while I wait for two or more emails to come into my inbox. The other aspect I have discovered is that if we have a power failure (and living in Warburton that is expected on a regular basis), then you don’t have a phone. The phone now works through the new modem: no power equals no modem, which equals no phone. I have a medical alarm that requires a phone line to operate. So, I am hopeful on one of those days when we have no power that I will at least have mobile coverage to ring for an ambulance. Not impressed at all. Marion Drake, Warburton.

Stop the talk THIS madness about the refugees on Manus and Nauru simply has to stop. It has consumed our politicians for far too long. At this stage, we have no option other than to bring them here and provide rehabilitation for all the damage we have done. No doubt a few aggressive and misguided politicians will lose face if we do this. However, so long as we do ‘not’ do this, we all lose face. Our country has already been humiliated, shamed and diminished internationally because of our attitude to this global problem. Few things are more destructive

than the fear generated by ignorance. Leo M. Kennedy, Wesburn.

Missed the point JOHN Whiteoak’s letter ‘Just whingers’ (‘Mail’, 8 November) totally misses the point. It was his choice to settle in the forest at the side of Mount Ben Cairn. If he wants to live in a high-risk environment, then that was his choice. The residents of the Upper Yarra Valley who purchased their properties along the floodplain of the Yarra and its tributaries did not purchase properties with forest up to their back doors. When purchasing our properties, we took into consideration the bushfire risk of the area, never thinking that forests were to be planted up to our back doors. We believed that government departments responsible for fire management would work to reduce and mitigate the potential for bushfires, not actively set out to increase that risk, as they publicly acknowledge they are doing in conjunction with Melbourne Water. Most people who live in the Upper Yarra keep their properties fire safe not just to protect our families and our pets, but also to ensure the safety of the abundant wildlife which inhabit the area. The floodplain has always been the safest part of the region; the reason most of the townships are located on the sides of the valley. We all enjoy the landscape where we can actually see our rivers. The realisation that most of the waterways in the area will be hidden behind dense bushland is not acceptable; it also conflicts with most of the tourism planning policies of the region. Rick Houlihan, Chairman, Yarra Waterways Group, Don Valley.

The ceremony was performed by the shire president Mowle on Wednesday afternoon in the best possible place Queens Park in fact ‘right on the spot’. A party of six visitor representatives of the Victorian Lawn Tennis Association were present and played exhibition matches to the edification of onlookers. They were Messrs J. M. Healesville Guardian 14 November 1936 Road Concerns REPAIRS are almost constantly being done to the lower end of St Leonard’s Road, but it is still in a shocking state because the work is not done in a proper manner. While this money is being wasted, residents in St Leonard’s Road and Fernshaw Road have to walk in thick mud or on rough stones. The paths that were evenly graded a few years ago are now a succession of hillocks, hollows and watercourses. Councillors do not seem to have any idea what is going on.

Expansion fallout meeting By Kath Gannaway KELLY Crosthwaite, Port Phillip Regional director of the Department of Water, Land and Planning (DEWLP) will address a public meeting on the

expansion of the Yellingbo Conservation Area on Wednesday, 23 November. Convened by the Yarra Waterways Group (YWG), the meeting will provide information on developments

arising from a public meeting in June attended by 120 people, and the increase in bushfire risk in the Upper Yarra Valley. The YWG was set up earlier this year in response to concerns that land-

owners with stream-side access affected by the expansion of the Yellingbo Conservation Area were unaware of the potential effect on them and their use of crown and privately owned land. Other speakers include Maureen

Halit representing the Millgrove Residents’ Action Group in relation to the potential impact of river walks in Millgrove. The meeting is at the Yarra Junction Primary School at 7pm.

Youth group winds up By Jesse Graham YARRA Glen’s [Glen.] Youth Group has held its final meeting, winding up after 10 years of parties, events and gatherings in town. [Glen.] was started by Heartland Church in Yarra Glen in 2006, by Sally and Andrew Marshall, when the church was set up in town. Sally told the Mail on Friday, 18 November, before the final meeting of the group, that she felt like she needed to start up the group in town, and turned to God for answers. “As I was driving into Yarra Glen ... I was having all of these emotions and feelings about it - it felt like there hadn’t been a youth group in Yarra Glen for 10 years,” she said. “When I was in the car, I said, ‘Well, God, if this is it, if this is what you want me to do, let me know today’. “That afternoon, I went back to Lilydale for a training session and our youth pastor came up to me and said, ‘I’ve been praying for you today - God says yes, what are we talking about?’.” Though the group had a slow start after its first party, as more and more events went by, regular attendees started to gather at the Gary Cooper Pavilion each Friday for the youth group. Andrew said that by the time the group finished up, there were about 250 regular attendees - along with

people who attended the larger events. “It’d be a cold winter’s night and 100 kids coming into a shed that’s got no heating,” Sally said. Sally said the group gave children in town a place to go on Friday nights that was easy to get to, with sporadic public transport making it hard for to visit friends in other towns. “I know, from my experience of growing up here and going to school in Lilydale, I just made friends down there, and that’s where my social life was and it was an effort to get down there,” she said. “With a youth group in town, you can say, ‘I can’t get to my friend’s house, at least I can get down to the shed’, and hang out with us.” Ten years on from the beginning of the group and two daughters later, Sally and Andrew said the time was right to wind up the group, and hope someone comes in to start up their own in its wake. “It was very emotional at the start, because we’ve invested so much into running youth group and we really want to see change and improvement and help kids know who they are meant to be, rather than running around and going by instinct,” Sally said. “It was a huge shock, detaching ourselves from these kids - we’ve had an emotional year separating- but now,

Sally and Andrew Marshall at their Yarra Glen home. 162184 it feels right. “Today’s the last day and it’s like, yep, it’s okay.” When asked if they had advice for

someone else coming into the space to start up a youth group, Andrew said it came down to faith. “If they’re coming from a perspec-

The closing ceremony of the event, which ran from 6-20 November, was held on Sunday, with 15 artists presenting sculptures they had erected in the Toolangi State Forest, near the Forest Discovery Centre. Using various mediums and inspirations, the sculptures were made to mark the 20th anniversary of the international sculpture event, held in the same area in 1996. Mail photographer Greg Carrick went out on the day to capture the action and the artworks. For more photos, visit mailcommunity.com.au.

Hall’s legend lives By Kath Gannaway WARBURTON filmmaker Matthew Holmes has realised his dream with the release of the full-length feature film ‘The Legend of Ben Hall’. The film put the Australian bushranger’s life on the big screen for the first time when it premiered in Forbes. Holmes is bringing the film back to Warburton for a special screening by the Yarra Ranges Film Society on Friday, 9 December. The screening which includes a live Q&A with Holmes, is recognition of the role the film society played in his journey so far. Holmes founded Two Tone Pictures in 2005 and in 2014 won the Technical Excellence Award for ‘The Artifice’ as part of the Warburton Film Festival. He pitched a new 30-minute film to the audience and launched a kickstarter campaign which raised almost twice as much as the $75,000 he was aiming for. His company joined forces with several other film companies who came together to produce the epic life story of Hall who died at the hands of police in 1865. Shot predominantly in the Macedon ranges, it is the previously untold story of the most prolific bushranger in Australian colonial history. His tale of betrayal, revenge, romance and crime has fascinated generations and become part of Australian folklore. Holmes said the story was a very human story. “It’s an extremely emotional story, a very dramatic film and one that touches on themes that everybody would understand,” he said.

“It’s a fantastic ride with a lot of action, romance and betrayal ... a big, old-fashioned epic film.” The Warburton screening is a way of saying ‘thank you’ to those who backed the kickstarter, including the YRFS. “Anyone who contributed money not only trusted me with their money and believed in my film and my skill,” he said. “It’s great to be able to finish it. It took longer, but it grew much bigger. “I’m very pleased with the finished film, it turned out to be an epic

New service is helping women By Kath Gannaway A NEW family violence program launched on 16 November aims to help those women who fall through the cracks of current services. The SAGE (Support, Advice, Guidance, Empowerment) program was launched at the Eastern Community Legal Centre’s (ECLC) AGM by Attorney-General George Brandis. ECLC provides services to Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, including their office in Healesville and outreach to Yarra Junction. ECLC CEO Michael Smith said the program, which integrates with other service providers across Melbourne’s east, seeks to engage women most in need of assistance. He said SAGE provided a unique ‘wraparound’ service for women experiencing or at risk of family violence, including legal, social and other support. “The demand for family violence support has surged in recent years but many women still face barriers to accessing help. The SAGE program takes a partnership approach that’s more likely to reach women who fall through the cracks of mainstream and standalone services,” Mr Smith said. Women from especially vulnerable population groups, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, women from migrant and CaLD (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) backgrounds and women with mental health issues or a disability, will have priority access to the SAGE program. “With the SAGE program launched, we have greater capacity to provide a culturally safe service that responds to the whole-of-life issues that can arise with family violence,” Mr Smith said. Statistics provided by ECLC state that in the 2015/16 year, the service assisted a record number of clients with 38 per cent of the centre’s work related to family violence matters and another 22 per cent related to family law. ECLC assisted 945 clients at the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court as part of its family violence Intervention Order Support Service, up 20 per cent from the previous year. ECLC was one of 12 legal assistance providers nominated by the Federal Government in 2015 to develop a specialist family violence service under the Women’s Safety Package.

Gifted Agent equals great results for all concerned..... “I met Sandy Hall in my search for a property in the Warburton area and had arranged to meet her at a prospective property. The house was lovely, but it didn’t tick all of the boxes for me. Sandy asked me to describe what I wanted in a home and I outlined a few of my ‘must haves’. Subsequently, Sandy was able to show me the perfect Home and I immediately knew it was the right one and I was successful in purchasing it. Over the years, I have dealt with many Agents, and find that “listening skills” are often not practised. Sandy is able to really listen to your needs and one of her gifts is to match you to your perfect home. By Kath Gannaway PULLING rabbits out of hats is nothing new for the Wandin Rotary Club when it comes to raising funds for worthy causes, but their latest effort was especially magical! The club raised $18,000 with ‘A Night of Magic’ at Lilydale on Saturday, 12 November, pushing the club over their three-year target of $50,000 raised for the Rotary Interplast program in the Philippines. Interplast sends teams of surgeons to repair and rebuild lives in the Asia Pacific region, responding to a range of injuries and birth deformities.

More than 230 people were entertained by New Zealand Rotarian and internationally acclaimed magician, Jonathan Usher, and spent generously on the silent auction and raffles - both well supported by local businesses. “This was the major push to get us over the line and we have enough money now, not only for the reconstructive surgery, but for training,” said Wandin Rotary president, Alan Henderson. Mr Henderson said local surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses would gain important knowledge and skills related to plastic

and reconstructive surgery from the Australian Interplast surgical team. “It is expected that about 60 patients will be involved and will benefit from life-changing surgical treatment,” he said. The night also served to raise awareness of Interplast with Di Gillies, co-ordinator for Australia and New Zealand, doing a presentation on the work of the organisation. Wandin Rotary is accepting further donations which are tax deductible and can be made by contacting the club’s treasurer, John Sanders at treasurer@ wandinrotary.org.

RASIGs Association’s Victorian president Gavin Lee said the event was a success, with soldiers from Western Australia and Queensland coming down for the first reunion in three years. He said the group met up at Healesville RSL on the Wednesday, with raffles and a meet-and-greet, before winery tours, visits to the sanctuary and to the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Phillip Island, a trip to the Simpson Barracks, a dinner at the MCG and a march through Healesville’s main street. Mr Lee said Healesville was

chosen as the reunion spot because it was close to the city, but also had plenty of accommodation for the many visiting soldiers. “I must admit, from day one, everyone’s coming up and saying ‘This is one of the best spots in Victoria’, and I said ‘Well, yeah, I agree with you because I’ve only been out here twice, myself’,” Mr Lee said. After speeches at Healesville RSL’s cenotaph on Sunday, a roast lunch, more raffles and a last formal goodbye, the former soldiers made their way home on Monday 14 and Tuesday 15 November.

IT’S time to write to Santa! Santa receives thousands of letters from children all over Australia with requests for all sorts of things, including toys, pets and even world peace. Australia Post works with Santa, and his elves, at Christmas to make sure you receive a reply to your letter (you must live in Australia though). How do I write my letter? There are three ways you can write your letter to Santa: You can use the ‘Let’s write a letter to Santa!’ online interactive, found in the multimedia fun section of the Australia Post website. This is a fun way to write your letter. There are instructions and a sample letter to help you. Or, write your letter on one of the decorative letter writing templates on the website, which can be printed out. Use your favourite pencil or pen and notepaper and just start writing. If you need some ideas for your letter, you can click on the sample letter.

Santa Claus is waiting patiently for his Christmas letters. You can also tell your teacher about Santa Mail and maybe your whole class could write letters together. How do I address the envelope? Follow these simple steps to address the envelope: Write Santa’s address clearly on the front of your envelope so your letter can be delivered to the right place. Santa’s special address is:

·

Santa North Pole 9999 Place a 65c stamp on the front of your envelope. Turn the envelope over and write your name and address on the back of the envelope, so Santa knows where to send a reply. Post the letter in a street posting box or at an Australia Post retail outlet. For more details, visit www. auspost.com.au

Oscar’s is a place of peace OSCAR’S on the Yarra is another local treasure that they’d love to introduce. They are a restaurant and accommodation venue with 350 metres of direct river frontage. They have a large deck from which you can hear the river flow by, the kookaburras laugh and the breeze blow through the 100-year-old oak tree that shades the deck. They are new to Warburton but not the valley and not good old-fashioned hospitality. They are very excited about all that this part of the world has to offer and would love to introduce themselves and show you around their beautiful 22-room accommodation property. The restaurant is open to the pubic Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, Friday, Saturday and Sunday for lunch and at all other times for group reservations and functions. They also welcome people to pop in for a coffee or tea or a glass of local wine and a cheeseboard whenever the inclination strikes. This Christmas, the restaurant has available a wonderful group menu, including a range of mains and desserts. Just some of the dishes include Atlantic salmon fillet, or crispy pork roulade. For dessert, there are individual Christmas puddings with ‘bloody shiraz gin’ ice cream. Also available is a Christmas barbecue menu, which includes a large range of mains and salads. On offer are teriyaki chicken kebabs, sticky pork ribs and much more. For dessert, why not try a summer berry and rhubarb crumble, or orange almond cake with whipped ricotta. Oscar’s on the Yarra is located at 3185, Warburton Highway, Warburton. For more information, contact (03) 5966 9166 or visit www.oscarsontheyarra.com.au.

Gaal capturing the ‘soul’ By Jesse Graham AN EXHIBITION of photographs from filmmaker and photographer Ivan Gaal’s 40-year career will hang on the walls of Warburton’s Arts Centre until next year, after opening earlier this month. People, Stories and Dance features 47 works from Mr Gaal’s career as a filmmaker and photographer, based in Melbourne and in the Upper Yarra area. The exhibition officially opened on Saturday, 12 November, and will run until Tuesday, 31 January, 2017. Mr Gaal said some of his photographic subjects attended the opening, and some of them gave speeches about his work. “People wrote stories into the (visitor) book, and everybody was happy, because they know me, they knew me, and they just spoke beautifully, eloquently, about the work that I’ve done,” he said. The photographs in the exhibition range from black and white film photos taken on a Mamiyaflex camera, through to digital prints taken of the late Ron Howard, one of which was a finalist in the National Photo-

Photographer and filmmaker Ivan Gaal at his exhibition in Warburton. 162159 Pictures: JESSE GRAHAM graphic Portrait Prize. When asked what makes a good portrait, Mr Gaal said it was about seeing the subject and capturing “a moment that can express their soul”.

“I’m looking for the soul of a person, you know? I can’t make people look beautiful; I like to get the truth, capture them as they are, get the reality of it all,” he said.

“When you look at the actual purity of some photographers, they just put a person in front of a coloured board. I don’t know. It’s not really my style.” Pointing out a photograph of his

wife, he said the photo wasn’t his best of her, aesthetically, but captured one of those moments. “She said, ‘You took so many good photos of me’, and I said, ‘Yeah, but the soul wasn’t there - that’s the best photo, because you really look relaxed and you’re enjoying yourself’,” he said. Along with taking photos, Mr Gaal has produced many films during his career, and cites Zen and the Art of Photography - quotes from which he pinned up around the exhibition - as an inspiration. “I didn’t know what I was doing it, but I was doing it well - not for money, but for my own satisfaction, and for art,” he said. “Now, you get older and you become more conscious - the book says that. “You’ve got to keep that natural instinct that you’re working and taking the photos with, but you’ve also got to be aware of it.” Entry to the exhibition, at the Upper Yarra Arts Centre, 3409 Warburton Highway, Warburton, is free. For more information, visit www. culturetracks.info.

Oliver sculptures come alive in copper wire By Jesse Graham INTRICATE sculptures woven from copper wire have been gathered from around the country and brought to TarraWarra Museum of Art for the first major posthumous exhibition of the work of sculptor, Bronwyn Oliver. The Sculpture of Bronwyn Oliver officially opened on Sunday, 21 November, and will run until 4 February, 2017, featuring more than 50 works from the New South Wales artist. Curator Julie Ewignton said the exhibition was the first “major survey exhibition” of the sculptor’s work since her death in 2006, with pieces gathered from around the country. “It has over 50 works, which cover the career from 1984 right through to 2006,” Ms Ewington said. “A great deal of it is copper wire; she started originally working in different materials - you’ll see paper with cane, fibreglass, very early on. “There’s even something that looks like flywire - a very fine copper wire but, gradually, she settles in to working

with various forms of copper wire.” The result is intricate sculptures that appear to be almost woven out of the study wire, with lighting installed in the gallery to complement the pieces and throw shadows across the walls and floors. “From very early on, I think from 1988, she worked out that the lighting should be considered as part of the work, and very often there are quite specific instructions, saying only light from one source - so it gets a particular shadow, and that shadow, behind the form itself, is considered part of the work,” Ms Ewington said. “With sculpture, you have to always consider not only the positive form, but also the negative space around it - while she is someone who focused on closed objects, sometimes, with others, she’s very aware of the negative space, she’s very aware of what happens as you move around it.” The space at TWMA shifts and changes with each exhibition, with rooms constructed for video and interac-

tive areas created as exhibitions change - for this exhibition, the main hall of the gallery has been emptied of extra walls, leaving vast spaces around the sculptures. Ms Ewington said Ms Oliver’s works were best viewed from all angles, as they could change appearance from different sides and under different light. “You’ve got to circumnavigate the works,” she said. “You can’t touch, but you’ve got to circumnavigate, and the great pleasure is just seeing them from different angles and seeing the way the light falls through them. “You just go around them and they start to move and change.” TarraWarra Museum of Art is located at 311 Healesville-Yarra Glen Road, Healesville, and is open from 11am-5pm Tuesday-Sunday. Entry is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $8 for pensioners and students and children under 12 receive free entry. For more information, call 5957 3100.

BASED on Ted Chiang’s short story Story of your Life, Arrival is a poignant, visionary work of hearty sci-fi. When 12 mysterious alien vessels appear across the world, top-class linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) is enlisted to communicate with them. Intellectual yet highly accessible, Arrival is a riveting and deeply insightful film.

Much of Arrival’s aesthetics, from its stark cinematography to its atonal soundtrack and the unearthly 'heptapod’ visitors, are appropriately alienating. However, the film is as much a commentary on humanity as an alien visitation movie. Leading a phenomenal cast, Adams delivers a compelling performance of quiet melancholy and clever conviction, as Louise studies the heptapod language, pleads her case to her government superiors and comes to terms with strange visions. Arrival’s tone is pitch-perfect, superbly capturing the fear and paranoia that would

inevitably sweep the world in the event of first contact, and derives tremendous tension from both the joy of discovery and the peril of human instinct. This film may be the best example since Shaun of the Dead of internal and external conflicts maintaining and building upon each other. As China and allied nations threaten war against the heptapods, the goal of decoding their language and purpose becomes ever more urgent. Arrival is 2016’s best science fiction film, bar none.

 Connecting people with local sport…

Big scores in ideal world By Chris Anderson YVCA CLASSIC cricket conditions greeted cricketers around the Yarra Valley for day one of Round 6 action. The action on the field certainly matched the conditions, as right across the grades the battle between bat and ball was intense. It was no more evident than in the competition’s premier grade, DJ Strachan Shield. The fixture for this round’s games was neatly packaged, as all three games matched evenly placed teams. Day one action didn’t disappoint, as all three games saw some see-sawing action between both combatants, and all games are intriguingly placed. Mount Evelyn hosted defending champs Woori Yallock in a game that pitted two undefeated teams against each other. Woori Yallock has been humming along again this season. Despite the loss of some key departures over the winter, they haven’t missed a beat. After being asked to field, they once again flexed their muscles behind the masterful duo of Simon Young and Jackson Wright. After a quick start to the home team, they were quickly put in their box by a rampant Tigers attack that quickly reduced them to 6/56. Despite some free-scoring, this innings looked destined for an early closure against a ruthless attack. The one saviour was that rising star Gareth Fraser was still at the wicket, with his bright, assured, start to his innings leaving the door open. Initially, support was given by Chad Witherdin (26), while the pair briskly put together a 49-run partnership that at least had the Rovers avoiding the embarrassment of being bowled out for under three figures. But, as is always the case when you’ve lost the top order cheaply, you’re only a wicket away from a small total with an exposed tail. Hayden Lane (31) joined Fraser at the wicket and offered some dogged, if unconventional, support to his teammate. The pair not only managed to see off the threat of Young and Wright, but began to frustrate the visitors who were confident some valuable time at the crease before the close of play. Fraser and Lane prospered over the last period before tea, and pressed the score to 7/160 in good time. Despite still being in a precarious position in batsmen-friendly conditions, the Rovers had their sights on a score beyond 200, and some muchneeded belief. The resistance continued after the break as the home team managed to push the score beyond 200 before Lane fell. Fraser, teetering on 98, avoided

some nervous moments with a booming maximum to bring up a memorable century. With his team in dire straits, his innings not only rescued his team, but eventually put them in a commanding position. He was able to cash in with the tail at the crease. When he was eventually dismissed for a brilliant 136, his team had managed to post a challenging 271. Young (5/83) finished with a much deserved five-wicket haul after an extended effort, while, as always, Wright’s speed enabled him to pick up key early wickets to finish with 3/68. Woori Yallock will have full use of a quick scoring ground next week. But they will have to do it without captain Ryan Smith, as he and Cal Ferguson fell victim to a brace from Kane Jones to leave the visitors wobbling at 2/31 when stumps were pulled. No one would ever write off a team like Woori Yallock, which boasts a long batting line-up with some explosive bats. Day two is set for great challenge for the champs. Healesville is hosting Yarra Junction in a game that some would say would be the most important of the DJ Strachan Shield season thus far. Both teams possess genuine matchwinners and quality young stars. But neither team have managed to find a consistent winning formula to threaten the top few teams. Even at this early stage of the season, a win could prove vital in the race for finals positions. Healesville won the toss and didn’t hesitate to have a crack at setting a total. Despite their struggles, the one thing you can count on from Yarra Junction is a disciplined, tight, approach to their bowling. This game was no exception as Nick Bark and Quinton Hodgkinson turned the screws on a vulnerable Bloods’ top order. Although not instantly successful, the Eagles won the war of attrition. With a couple of wickets to Terry Ottrey (2/25) complementing his openers, the Bloods’ top-order had once again faltered to be decimated at 4/8. Mark Minney joined captain Ash Hamer at the wicket. With some decent recent form, the pair started another rescue mission for the home team. Determined not to get stuck behind some tight bowling, the pair immediately added some scoring grunt to their resistance, which put some pressure back on the bowling attack who were previously able to stick to their plans without much challenge. The biggest task for the batting pair was to safely navigate their team to the tea break with their wickets in hand and some useful runs on the board. This they were able to do reaching 4/92 at the main break. This left the innings evenly poised,

and well placed for either team. The 10 overs after tea proved fruitful for the Bloods as Hamer and Minney were able to add another 50 runs to the score in good time as the visitors were almost broken. After a free-scoring innings, Hamer was the first to fall, 14 runs shy of a deserved century. When Minney soon departed for an even 50, the Eagles muscled their way back into the contest with the score on 6/154. The visitors could sniff an early kill. But despite the best efforts of Cam Spaulding (3/75) and Lachlan Dempster (2/22), their regular wickets were matched by regular runs. The Bloods’ tail was able to add some useful runs to the total in quick time as they all contributed. The pick of the bunch was a breezy 32 not out from Dylan Moore. In the end, the Bloods flow ended on 232, a useful total considering their early predicament. However, with overs still in the bank, a missed opportunity to bat the Eagles out of the contest. In the final game of the round, Seville travelled to Yarra Glen in a battle in which the victors reward would be to break their winless streak. Despite their lowly positions on the ladder, both teams wouldn’t be totally disappointed with the season thus far as the emerging youngsters from both teams have provided opposition with headaches. But both teams have lacked the consistency, and pressure, across a full game to eek out a win. With Yarra Glen opening the contest with the bat, Seville’s opening combination of Matt Hadlum and Mark Sandfort were going to be key players on day one. Hadlum (4/39) proved as much as his speed troubled the young Yarra Glen outfit. Yarra Glen opener David Brambilla (34) proved his worth to his team once again with a disciplined display at the top of the order. But with regular wickets at the other end, and himself not being able to kick on when set, the innings failed to gain any useful momentum early. Despite this, the home team proved its resolve, and, despite their meek collapse last week against Mount Evelyn, they were to have none of this as they pressed on against a disciplined bowling display from the Blues. After an interrupted season last summer, Brayden Caldwell (3/28) proved what a pivotal role he plays in this young side with his probing spin. His three wickets kept the pressure on the batsmen and tabs on the scoring rate. Richard Ellisdon’s (47) experience again proved useful to the young batsmen, while his innings added some much-needed polish and resolve that allowed it to extend late into day one. Eventually, the home team was

bowled out for 165. A useful score, albeit short of a dominant one. This game is well poised going into day two. Seville’s top five combined for a dismal 17 last week, while their tail almost led them to a remarkable victory. If the Blues can get themselves into the innings early, then they would be confident of chasing the total. But, as Mount Evelyn found last week, Yarra Glen’s slow bowling brigade will ensure the batsmen will have to work hard for each of their runs and regular wickets could see them secure their first win in the top grade after nearly two decades of lower grade cricket. Kerry and Paul take out Garside Challenge WARBURTON GOLF WEDNESDAY TWO-PERSON Ambrose: The muchanticipated Garside Annual Challenge was won by Kerry Slater and Paul Mason. They had a stunning nett 57 to win the day by a clear margin. SATURDAY Stroke and final round of the club

championships: Daily results - A Grade winner was Mitch Hatt with a superb nett 66. Matching that score, but in B Grade, was Eric Slater. The ball-count went to 72. The NTPs were won by Butch Hollis (3rd), Allan Hubbard (9th), Clint Smallman (12th) and Ian Kempton (15th). Club Championship: The Open

Championship was always a two-horse race. Paul Mason opened the fourround event with a slashing 68; a gross score that was not bettered by anyone throughout the event. This set up Paul with a 10-stroke lead. His main threat, current club president, Andrew Williams, outscored Paul over the last three rounds, but Paul prevailed by a clear

seven shots. This gives him a stunning eight championship open titles. This is the most by any member over the last 70 years. Williams finished eight shots ahead of Jason Kennedy in third place. Well done to all members who persevered for the four rounds. In B Grade, Dave Wappet won on an action-packed last day. He won

his first title from last year’s winner, Steuart Hawke, by just one shot. Ken White came in third, just in front of ‘Young Kempo’. The Women’s title went to the very popular Meredith Nursey. With scores of 86, 83 and 84 ‘off the stick’, Meredith proved to be a most worthy winner.

Motoring Rotar y’s revving it up By Kath Gannaway WANDIN Rotary Club has stepped up to keep the motor revving on the Wandin Custom Car and Bike Show. The show has grown from a modest gathering of custom cars and bikes at the Wandin town centre seven years ago, to an extravaganza of hundreds of vehicles and community groups at the Wandin East Recreation Reserve. The event was the brainchild of Sindy Redden-Vitale who, with the help of husband Tony and friends, raised more than $250,000 for the Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal and local organisations such as the Wandin CFA and local primary schools and kindergartens. The show is held on the third Wednesday of each month from October through to March and has not only become a huge local event in terms of car and bike owners, but a regular catch-up for local families and car enthusiasts. “We felt that for the event to continue as a charity, we would offer it to the Wandin Rotary Club, and we hope they can be as successful as we were,” Sindy said having passed the baton at the end of last season. Rotary president, Alan Henderson, said they were up to the challenge. “It’s not only a proven project, it is a great cause that is well supported,” Mr Henderson said. He said a lot of the people involved, from community groups and sponsors to car clubs, had stayed on. “Most of the money goes to the Royal Children’s Hospital and some to community groups, so we certainly see it as a good thing to keep going.” Mr Henderson congratulated Sindy and her team, saying they were passionate about the concept from the start and had built it into a very successful event. The next Wandin Custom Car and Bike Show is on Wednesday, 21 December, at the Wandin East Recreation Reserve, corner of Old Baker Road and Monbulk Seville Road, from 6pm to 9pm. Phone 5964 7366 for more information.

Makeover for LandCruiser TOYOTA has significantly re-engineered its top-selling LandCruiser 70 Series single cab-chassis to achieve the maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating as part of a comprehensive acrossthe-range upgrade. Single cab-chassis variants benefit from a frame that is larger and stiffer, additional airbags, revised body panels, new front seats and a raft of other changes that improve its safety performance. All 70 Series variants receive a full electronic safety package of vehicle stability control (VSC), active traction control (A-TRC), hill-start assist control (HAC), brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution in addition to the existing anti-skid brakes. Other major improvements to the LandCruiser 70 Series include engine upgrades that have reduced fuel consumption by up to 10.1 per cent while resulting in improved responsiveness, more relaxed driving and lower emissions. The high-torque 4.5-litre turbodiesel V8 engine has gained a diesel particulate filter and piezo-electric injectors while the five-speed manual transmission’s gearing is taller in second and fifth gears. Cruise control is new to the standard equipment list. Additional upgrades to the WorkMate grade include replacing split-rim steel wheels with a wider single-piece 16-inch design, matched for the first time to tubeless tyres. Toyota’s Australian engineers, supported by colleagues from Toyota in Japan, conducted extensive local development and evaluation over the past five years, including recalibrating the

LandCruiser 70 Series was subjected to more than 100,000km of extreme local testing, 70 per cent of which was conducted off-road, including in some of the harshest conditions in the country. The sweeping engineering and manufacturing advances for LandCruiser 70 Series have resulted in modest price rises.

Single cab-chassis variants, which receive the most widespread updates, have had their listed retail prices rise by $5500 while the price rise for the double cab-chassis, wagon and troop carrier has been limited to $3000, or 4.5 to 5.2 per cent. Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the comprehensive updates were specifically designed and engineered

to meet the varied demands of business and private buyers. “These extensive engineering and specification updates guarantee the future for the LandCruiser 70 Series and its unrivalled combination of reliability, towing, payload and off-road ability," Mr Cramb said. “For more than 30 years, miners, farmers, governments and many other users have turned to the go-anywhere
