Men take a stand EVERY day Noosa police are called to at least one domestic violence incident throughout the region. In the past seven days there were nine call-outs for help from police; call-outs to local homes where family members are feeling threatened, neighbours are worried and the potential for devastating violence is real. Noosa Heads officer in charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight says the statistics are shocking and are only expected to rise as summer and the holiday season edge closer. And while both men and women can commit domestic

violence, men are often the perpetrator. Tomorrow’s White Ribbon Day is a chance for men to stand up and say no to violence against women and join in discussions about why domestic violence is so prevalent in our community. To end men’s violence against women the community as a whole must stand up, speak out and act as silence and inaction will only let the violence continue. Member for Noosa Glen Elmes, Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington, Senior Sergeant Steve McReight, Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham and Noosa

Today’s advertising sales manager Phill Le Petit are just four community members who have stood together to say no to violence against women. The five men are taking this chance to do what they can to stop domestic and family violence in our community by saying they stand up and speak out to prevent men’s violence against women. Snr Sgt Steve McReight said the police are at the coal-face, doing everything they can to help keep families safe and prevent domestic violence incidents. “Anything we can do to assist, we do,” he said. “We’re averaging

more than one call-out a day and we haven’t even hit the peak season yet.” White Ribbon Day acknowledges there is a range of domestic and family violence, but focuses on men’s violence against women and calls on men and boys to take the oath to never commit domestic violence and to always stand up and speak out for victims. Turn to page 10 and 11 for more on how you can stand up and speak out and to also read about Noosa Police’s new program working to reduce violence in our community.

Council too tight for scooters By Jolene Ogle COUNCILLOR Brian Stockwell last week said council’s transport policy could see Noosa become the scooter capital of Queensland, but local riders are saying council needs to “relax” before that could happen. Noosa Waters resident John O’Grady loves to ride his scooter throughout the shire but said “overzealous” parking inspectors were taking the shine off the environmentally-friendly transport option. Mr O’Grady said he used to try and park “out of the way” when visiting busy centres such as Hasting Street and the river foreshore, but since he and a friend were fined $88 for parking near a bicycle stand he has been forced to take up an entire car park. “Over-zealous parking officers fining scooter riders for parking in anything other than a ‘designated spot’ now sees many of us taking up a whole car space to save being fined,” he said. “It’s just crazy and unpractical for the sake of simply parking on the grass, out of the way of anything and leaving roadside parking for cars.” Mr O’Grady said taking car park spaces to create more scooter parking wasn’t the solution. “Council needs to relax,” he said. “It is blatant and unpractical revenue raising ... other places like even the City of Melbourne allow motorcycles to park on the nature strip or grassed areas to leave room

for car parking on the roadways,” he said. “The upshot of Noosa Council’s silly scooter-fining policy will only see less practical car loads of people being able to find a park and more annoyed and frustrated motorists looking at scooters taking up a whole car space.” Noosa Heads officer in charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said police could also fine motorists for parking outside of designated parking spot but the fine is $48 compared to council’s $88. Sen Sgt McReight said the police often left parking fines to council. A Noosa Council spokesperson has said Council provided additional motorcycle parking at Sunshine Beach and Peregian Beach in response to calls from the community. “Last year, in consultation with the Hastings Street Association, council provided some extra motorcycle spaces on Hastings Street. “If there is no designated motorcycle parking available, riders are welcome to park in a standard vehicle space. A standard vehicle space can accommodate more than one motorcycle,“ the spokesperson said. When considering requests for additional motorcycle parking, council said staff would take into account the location, the space available and demand for parking. Council fines for parking outside of a marked space is $60. Parking on a nature strip attracts a $91 fine, while parking in a park may cost the driver/rider up to $243.

John O'Grady of Noosa Waters says he now parks in a whole car park because he was fined for parking his scooter "out of the way".

Stormy weather on way

Tim Steele from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services at the annual disaster management conference at The J last week.

WE ARE in for another hot summer and the beginning of storm season has already kicked off here on the coast. The annual disaster preparedness seminar where Queensland Fire and Emergency Services meets with the Bureau of Meteorology, local council and police took place at The J last week. The aim is to discuss the storm season ahead and any potential issues needing tackling before the weather brings flash floods, bushfires or big winds. The prediction is that this summer will be dry and very hot, with temperatures above average and 15 or more days of heatwaves expected for this region. The seminar addressed the risk of

fire danger and the effect hot temperatures can have on have on elderly and visitors to the region, as well as the best strategies to deal with these issues. As the Sunshine Coast has so many tourists who are not used to such high temperatures, a common issue emergency services treat through the summer is heat stress. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Sunshine Coast zone commander Mark Stuart said that the most important thing they wanted to convey to the public was awareness. “We are asking the public to be storm ready. This is the most effective way of getting through a storm season without problems. That can mean cutting trees back, keeping emergency numbers close at hand and remembering to check on neighbours,” he said. “Keeping pets cool, being aware of

water over roads. Always remember that if it’s flooded, forget it,” Mr Stuart said. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services emergency management cocoordinator, Tim Steele says keeping in the loop to reduce the effects of a storm or flooding is the best thing we can do to look after ourselves through the storm season. “Take those steps to prepare. Clean out your gutters, avoid floods, listen out for warnings, follow council on Facebook or Twitter, get onto the Bureau of Meteorology’s website, know to call 132 500 for SES and have alternative routes planned to get around travel. “Talk to your family, friends and neighbours about how you are preparing to help each other with new ideas. Community awareness really is the best form of defence,’ he said.

No party for plastics NOOSA MP Glen Elmes has said an LNP government would phase out single-use plastic bags throughout the state in a bold environmental move. Speaking at the new Peregian Beach IGA, Mr Elmes said a future LNP government would lead the way in cutting plastic waste, reducing landfill and providing a safe environment for wildlife and families. “By phasing out single-use plastic bags from our local supermarkets we are making an important investment in our future,” he said. Mr Elmes said the LNP’s commitment to phase-out the bags is endorsed by Clean Up Australia, Wildlife Australia and the Boomerang Alliance, which represents 45 environmental groups, and the LNP will join with NSW and Victoria to develop a nationally-consistent approach. In 2005, all Australian state governments agreed to phase-out plastic bags by 2008 but Queensland is lagging with only South Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and the ACT fulfilling the promise. Mr Elmes’ policy announcement will only come about the LNP wins the next election but Mr Elmes said local families and business can make changes now. “There are plenty of alternatives to the single-use plastic bag. By making a simple lifestyle change, local families can make a huge difference,” Mr Elmes said. “Green or bring-your-own bags, heavy retail bags, paper bags and barrier bags for fruit and vegetables and meat will not be banned.”

INBRIEF Show Day announced

Above: Glen Elmes donates $500 to Boomerang Bags with Roz White, Desiree Gralton and Sandra from Boomerang Bags.

NOOSA Council has announced Friday 15 September as the date for next year’s Noosa Country Show public holiday. The Noosa Country Show will be held on 15 and 16 September in 2017. The show is traditionally held on the second Friday and Saturday in September however this year the Noosa Show Society has advised it will be held on the third weekend of September. The council has received formal notification from the Queensland Government that this date has been declared as the 2017 public holiday for the Noosa Shire.

Right: IGA Peregian Beach owner Roz White is keen to work with Boomerang Bags co-coordinator Desiree Gralton to get shoppers using the borrow and bring back scheme.

Apply now for arts grants

Mr Elmes said the LNP has also introduced a container deposit scheme that would give consumers, businesses and charities a 10 cent refund for aluminium, glass and plastic drink containers returned for recycling. “These are the two most important policies we’ve ever put out,” he said. Environment minister Steven Miles has welcomed LNP’s announcement but said Labor had already been working on banning plastic bags. “Since May last year we’ve been investigating a ban on use of singleuse plastic shopping bags and it looks

like the LNP have finally caught up,” he said. “We’ve been investigating options to restrict the use of single-use plastic bags both across QLD and Australia. “We’re already working closely with NSW and Victoria to reach an agreement on a possible east coast approach to reducing the supply of single-use bags.” Dr Miles said the possible east coast plastic bag ban would be discussed at the Commonwealth and State Meeting of Environment Ministers this Friday, 25 November, and he looks forward to “meeting with my interstate counterparts ... to progress these plans”.

How we use plastic bags: Plastic bags have an average lifespan of 12 minutes Each bag takes 1000 years to fully decompose Queenslanders use around 1 billion plastic bags a year Each family collects more than 60 bags per week.

THE council is now accepting applications for the latest round of Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grants. Artists, art groups and other not-for-profit organisations have until 21 December to submit a brief pitch, the initial step in the application process. RADF provides one-off financial assistance to eligible groups and individuals for a wide range of arts and cultural projects. For more information about RADF grants, visit www.noosa. qld.gov.au/radf, contact Noosa Council’s RADF Liaison Officer on 5329 6558 or email queries to grants@noosa.qld.gov.au.

School supplies flood in By Hollie Harris CHRISTMAS has arrived early in East Timor in the form of 1600 shoe boxes collected from Tewantin, Cooroy, Coolum and Pacific Paradise State Schools which left here in June and arrived in Timor Leste. The shoe boxes full of educational items arrived at Sao Miguel at Raikotu, a school about 30 minutes west of Dili, a few weeks ago and thousands of students were excitedly waiting to receive one. Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank in Cooroy, Marcoola and Tewantin and the Rotary Clubs of Noosa and Cooroy partnered together to support a cause that would instil a sense of responsibility into each student who compiled these special gifts. Attending a school which receives no help from the ministry of education in Timor, Sao Miguel students are in desperate need of the simple educational items that many children here take for granted. Each parcel took the form of a decorated shoe box filled with exercise books, rulers, erasers, pens and pencils and a personal item from each student from the three state schools to the child opening it at the other end. Tewantin State School principal Corrie Connors says learning of the arrival of the shoe boxes has brought an emotional reaction from his

Drop Bear wins Community is the word that says it all at Tewantin State School. students with the spirit of the project really hitting home in anticipation of seeing the presentation of the shoe boxes arriving. “The students and our school all have a real connection to this project. They had a ball putting the care parcels together, and it’s great to see the collective efforts of the kids, their families and the teams at Bendigo Bank put those shoe boxes into the hands of the kids who need them most,’’ Mrs. Connors said. “It’s great to see their thoughtfulness come full circle, and we’re excited and proud to have been part of it all again this year. Every shoe box was personally decorated and had educational items to further the education of a child less fortunate than themselves. Each student also enclosed something small of

theirs such as a soft toy or tennis ball. It added something simple but personal to each box,” she said. Tewantin Community Bank branch manager, Wayne Hoens agreed and said he felt the project continued to build on something special. “Our Community Banks are all about giving back, and in this case the community recipients have been international ones. This project is about community partnership and feels as relevant now as when we started in 2008. We’re delighted to continue our collaboration with Rotary, and I’m looking forward to watching some of the kids recognise their shoe box in the photos. We all love this project and are committed to doing it all again in 2017,” he said.

Students were so grateful to receive the boxes.

EACH year the youth travel industry in Australia holds an event called the Golden Backpack Awards. This year, about 240 people attended the awards which were held at the Skypoint Observation Deck on the Gold Coast. For the fourth year, local tour company Drop Bear has brought home the award for the Best Tour Activity in Queensland. It is an fantastic achievement for this small tour operator which competes with the likes of AJ Hacket and Australia Skydive for a top position. The team is extremely proud and hopes that this inspires other small tour operators to be more involved with industry events and to reach for the stars. Drop Bear is locally owned by Noosa locals Mark and Hana. They are passionate about what they do and have a small team of dedicated Drop Bears who absolutely love Fraser Island. They offer a truly memorable eco island adventure and with more than 30 years’ experience of living and visiting Fraser Island between them. They have plenty of knowledge and skills to make a camping or glamping trip truly amazing. Four years of being the best in Queensland has made this one very proud and impressive little Noosa success story.

Service to show off their skills PEOPLE living with a disability will now have the chance to shine through their skills thanks to a new social enterprise program at Sunshine Butterflies. The new initiative will trial a social innovation approach to product and job creation with participants given the opportunity to share their skills, passions and creativity with their community through creative and sustainable products and services. Sunshine Butterflies founder and CEO Leanne Walsh said the new initiative will provide employment pathways and purpose for members who may feel excluded from the workforce. “With the help of our support staff, individuals will now have the chance to put their skills into practice and produce innovative and creative products and services for positive social change in a supportive and educational environment,” she said. “We will create a range of unique and bespoke Noosa products to fulfil the diverse needs and interests that already exist within our region, giving further opportunity for us to eventually develop and mentor individual start-up businesses through our partnerships that will provide further opportunities and outcomes.” Former Noosa councillor Sandy Bolton said Sunshine Butterflies is consistently leading the way in innovative approaches to sustainability and said it has been a wonderful journey working alongside their dynamic team.

Noosa MP Glen Elmes, pictured with charity founder Lorraine Kenway, last week donated $500 to Santa's Class Helpers which will this year help more than 800 local children have a brighter Christmas.

Pitch in to help out Santa

It's all about social enterprise: Sunshine Butterflies CEO Leanne Walsh with Felicity Hannam, Nathan Phipps and Sandy Bolton. “The social innovation process has been both invigorating and educational, capturing both the passion and perception of people with differing interests and abilities,” she said. “Demonstrating how we can enrich quality of life and environmental outcomes through economic models is very much part of all our futures.”

All proceeds from the social enterprise products will go directly back to Sunshine Butterflies programs and initiatives to benefit members living with a disability, providing choice, skills, education, opportunity and inclusion. The Sunshine Butterflies social enterprise will showcase its products at the Christmas in Cooroy event on Saturday 3 December.

EACH year Santa’s Classy helpers spend 11 months collecting toys, food and special items for local families who are doing it tough, but this year the charity needs a helping hand. All items collected throughout the year are then set-up at The J like a big supermarket where families under the care of local organisations such as The Salvation Army can come and shop for items to help make their Christmas a little brighter. Santa’s Classy Helpers founder Lorraine Kenway said the service expects to help at least 285 families this year, which will be more than 800 children, and with the special shopping day almost here there is a way to go to ensure there is plenty on offer for local families. “We need new toys for newborns to teenagers and presents for

mums and dads. “There are a lot of single dads looking after the kids and they seem to be forgotten when it comes to presents,” she said. “We need a lot more items for our special shopping day. We need everything from food to toys. Many of these people live with second-hand things so we ask all donations to be brand new.” Strong men and women are also needed on the day to help carry heavy bags and boxes out to cars. Anyone who would like to volunteer can phone Lorraine on 5449 7599. Anyone who would like to donate long-life food items, personal hygiene items, new toys, linen, bath towels and other items can drop into one of the two Classy Lady boutiques at Gympie Terrace or Gibson Road, Noosaville.

WHITERIBBON Zonta members will walk the walk this Sunday (27 November) to say no to violence against women.

Helplines are not only for women. There are a range of helplines for men with free counselling services available.

Zonta walks for women THE Zonta Club of Noosa will this weekend take to the Noosa boardwalk to call for an end to violence against women. The Walk with Zonta is an annual event with group members donning their orange shirts and

walking along boardwalk from Noosa Woods to Noosa Main Beach. The aim of the walk is to help raise awareness of violence against women and is part of the United Nations Elimination of

Violence Against Women day, as well as the final day for the 2016 White Ribbon Day campaign. Community members are encouraged to join the walk and say no to violence against women in the Noosa community and

throughout the world. The Zonta Club of Noosa will meet at the Noosa Woods on Sunday 27 November at 10.30am and anyone is welcome to join them as they walk to Noosa Main Beach.

Knowing what to say, and when WHITE Ribbon Day calls on men and boys to stand up and speak out, but sometimes it is hard to know what to say when someone makes an inappropriate statement about women or behaves inappropriately towards a woman. White Ribbon Australia has shared a number of tactics to help friends, colleagues and family members speak out: If you are with friends and someone says something that makes you uncomfortable or that you feel is wrong, you can say: “I’m not sure what you mean. What did you say?”

Sometimes people forget they are talking about a real person. To remind them and change the conversation, you can say: “What if this was your sister/daughter/ son?” Give your opinion to show your disapproval: “I believe abusing a woman is wrong.” If you are with a group of people, you’re probably not the only one feeling uncomfortable. Let others know they are not alone and encourage them to speak up by asking: “Am I the only one uncomfortable with this?” The White Ribbon Day cam-

paign also asks men and boys to safely intervene when they see violence happening and recommend focusing on what you can do while always keeping yourself and others safe. Always call triple-zero in an emergency but you can also help by being a witness. To do this, stand somewhere close but safe so the violent person knows they are being watched. You can also ask for help from people near you. White Ribbon Australia also recommends, if a woman has told you about violence against her always check with her first before

saying anything to her partner. Her partner could become more violent if he thinks she has told someone about the abuse. But, if you find out about violence you can talk to the woman and let her know you are willing to help her - find out what help is available to her and offer to help her access support, or talk to a group of the perpetrator’s friends and/or a group of the victim’s friends and develop a group response. For more information on how you can step up and speak out, visit www.whiteribbon.org.au.

WHITERIBBON The Noosa Vulnerable Persons Unit is working to help stop domestic violence before it starts.

Stopping it before it starts By Jolene Ogle NOOSA police are attending, on average, one domestic violence call-out per day, with those numbers expected to double over the Christmas period. Add to that a 40 per cent increase in domestic violence incidents throughout Queensland and it was clear something needed to be done to better protect families. In a press conference earlier this year, District Officer Superintendent Darryl Johnson said the Sunshine Coast “had a problem” with domestic violence and vowed to take a zero tolerance approach to violence in the home. Supt Johnson said the majority of cases involved men and said there needed to be more education of young men in the community enforcing that violence would not be tolerated. In response to the growing epidemic of family and domestic violence, the Noosa Shire, along with the Sunshine Coast region, now have new-look Vulnerable Person Units (VPU) that are working hard to help prevent violence before it happens. Senior Constable Mark Jones is based at Noosa Heads Police Station and is part of a two-man team head-

ing the VPU response throughout Noosa. “Superintendent Darryl Johnson has formulated a plan to take domestic violence response in a different direction,” he said. “Our key is to speak to respondents and see if we can change their behaviour and offer help and support.” Sen Const Jones said many of the breaches of domestic violence orders are due to a misunderstanding or ignorance of process. “When police attend (a domestic violence incident) everybody’s emotions and stress are hyped up and they can’t comprehend what’s happening,” he said. “So, we go in two days afterwards when the dust has settled and we sit there and explain what’s going on. “We speak to them to find out what the underlying issues and causes there are and then we try and link them with agencies to assist such as Centracare, Scope and DV Connect, plus the Salvation Army when there are financial issues and psychologists. “We want to help people and the idea is to try and prevent anything happening into the future. That’s our key goal, reduce DV, because it is a very high crime stat in our region.”

The Sunshine Coast/Noosa VPU is made up of seven special officers with two stationed in Noosa, three in Maroochydore and two in Caloundra with the role of attending low to medium risk cases to help prevent violence. “Our role is to come in and review and evaluate all domestic violence occurrences. Any deemed very high risk are dealt with by the Domestic Family Violence co-ordinator,” he said. “We manage the medium-risk clients; it’s usually their first approach with no previous domestic violence incidents. We want to get in there to see what the problems are before they explode. We’re all about early intervention.” This modern, humanistic approach from the police is a new way of dealing with domestic violence, with Noosa and the Sunshine Coast being the first to trial this 12-month program. “This is the first time in the state that we’re tacking domestic violence in this way,” Sen Const Jones said. “At just two months in, we don’t know what the changes or the results will be yet but we have had quite a bit of positive feedback from families.” Sen Const Jones said he had found

alleged perpetrators didn’t expect police to offered help in this way, with officers also attending court days to help alleged perpetrators understand court orders and paperwork. “They are often shocked we’re willing to offer help and sit and chat with them to discuss issues,” he said. “We’re always willing to be on the phone with them if they feel things are going to blow-up. Rather than having an incident and us being called to deal with that incident, they can talk with us first. “They can have a chat with us and we’re more than happy to do that. We don’t know the outcome yet, but we hope we’re diffusing situations. We’re hoping we’re making a change. We want to change what’s going on and reduce domestic violence.” Sen Const Jones said the key to reducing the amount of DV in the community was helping people deal with problems that can lead to violence. “We understand there are issues as to why domestic violence takes place. We want to ask and question people about what is going on and why are these things happening,” he said. Sen Const Jones gave an example

of one local family that had been visited by the police on three occasions because of domestic violence and after connecting with VPU, they were able to determine financial stress and alcohol dependency were major factors in the incidents. “I got there on the fourth time and I was able to contact the Salvation Army who set-up a case worker to help the family,” he said. “We haven’t heard anything since from this family and that’s what we’re hoping we can do.” Sen Const Jones says he understands there are some families the special unit won’t be able to help, “that’s the real world” he said, but “if we can help some then it’s rewarding what we do”. Sen Const Jones said he hoped the new way of working with alleged perpetrators was the start of great change and a reduction of violence in the community and in family homes. “Anything to change the behaviour of respondents and reduce domestic violence is a positive step forward,” he said. “But, there’s a lot of change that still needs to be done but we’re working towards that. We have to take small steps at the start to make sure we’re doing the right thing.”

White Ribbon criticised, but the need remains By Jolene Ogle OVER the weekend, media reports have surfaced criticising White Ribbon Australia’s governance and operations, saying the organisation is focusing on business and celebrity at the expense of its cause. In a report printed in The Saturday noosatoday.com.au

Paper, senior staffers accused leadership of being competitive with other domestic violence support groups instead of working collaboratively and being more “focused on branding than meaningful cultural change”. The report also said there was a “perceived failure” to adequately address a series of embarrassing mi-

sogynistic incidents involving highprofile White Ribbon ambassadors. White Ribbon’s chief executive Libby Davies has vigorously rejected the claims as “fallacious, malicious accusations with no basis” and said White Ribbon Australia remained committed to the cause of domestic violence prevention.

Despite the criticism of White Ribbon Australia, Noosa Today has decided to continue to support the cause as a way of drawing attention to the high rates of violence in our community. White Ribbon Australia is clear in stating most domestic violence incidents are at the hands of men, but not

all men are violent and it’s time for men within the community to stand up and say enough is enough. Our feature in this week’s paper hopes to highlight the prevalence of domestic violence throughout the Noosa region and ask all in the community to say no to violence against women, children and men.

Noosa River is A grade NOOSA River has received an A- score in this year’s Healthy Waterways Report Card, but council say there is room for improvement. The results were released this week and while Noosa Council has welcomed the news of the river’s top marks for its combined estuarine and freshwater health for the second year running, Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington said there was still work to do. “A recent study by Dr Ruth Thurstan of the University of Queensland showed biodiversity in the Noosa River has been significantly depleted in the past 100 years or more,” Councillor Wellington said. “Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation, in collaboration with various community groups and tertiary institutions, is engaging in a series of projects to help improve that biodiversity. “One such project is called ‘Keep it in Kin Kin’. This effort aims to reduce sediment entering the river from the Kin Kin catchment. The project ties in perfectly with one of the key recommendations in the Healthy Waterways Report to reduce pollutant loads in Kin Kin Creek.” Cr Wellington said it was with thanks to efforts by University of Sunshine Coast scientists and others, that the Noosa River and es-

tuary will soon be one of the best understood waterways in the country. “I hope the restoration work happening in the river will provide insights to assist the remediation of other river systems,” he said. “This work has already found that the Noosa River is home to a number of endangered species.” The Noosa River catchment also scored four out of five stars in the report’s scoring system reflecting social and economic indicators. Healthy Waterways and Catchments CEO Julie McLellan said Noosa retained the highest proportion of both freshwater and estuarine habitats in South East Queensland, “which help support very high social and economic benefits”. “The community therefore value their waterways very highly, and the economic value generated through local community waterway recreation is also very high,” she said. “In order to protect the social and economic benefits from the pressures of urban development, it is critical to incorporate stormwater management infrastructure in new developments, and implement erosion and sediment control on construction sites.”

Research dog on koala scent BAXTER the border collie will have a new home and role in life, thanks to an innovative koala research programme funded by the Australian and Queensland governments. Baxter will help the research team gather important information about koalas that can be used to help develop land offsets for infrastructure projects throughout Queensland, but will first start work on the Cooroy to Curra road development. Federal Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Darren Chester said Baxter was part of a research team based at the University of the Sunshine Coast that would help shape the future design of environmental land offsets to counterbalance impacts of development on koala populations. “His world class nose is going to be put to good use, sniffing out koala scat to help complete research into selecting land offsets as part of the Section C project (Cooroy to Curra),” he said. Queensland Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said the State Government would use the research to improve the design of land offsets for future infrastructure projects. “Transport and Main Roads has several research projects underway or recently completed in South East Queensland that focus on vulnerable species such as the koala,” Mr Bailey said. “Findings will help design underpasses and barriers, to help prevent animal death and injury by vehicle strikes.” Federal Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien welcomed the four-year old

Baxter the koala sniffing dog will be put to work on the Cooroy to Curra road development. border collie to the team. “The research into koala populations is being conducted by a local team at USC and will be a valuable part of learning more about the species, their diet and habitat. The work being done here will be put to use on other large infrastructure projects for years to come,” Mr O’Brien said. “The findings will also be published more broadly, so anyone can use the research to help with their conservation efforts or mitigate impacts to koalas and other wildlife including developers who can use it to design more successful offsets.” Geneticist and head of the Detection Dogs for Conservation team at USC Dr Celine Frere said dogs find koala scats more easily than humans and a lot of interesting information could be derived from them. “In particular, we can determine the genetic fingerprint of koalas. This opens many doors in our understanding of koalas such as their health,

the connectivity or fragmentation of the population and even their social structure,” Dr Frere said. Ecologist and dog handler at USC Dr Romane Cristescu has been training with Baxter for several months. “The dogs that can graduate as conservation dogs are one in a million. We need dogs that are totally obsessed by their toy - usually a tennis ball - that want to play all day, have very high energy and drive, but at the same time have a soft character and are 100 per cent safe around other animals. This is a very rare combination,” Dr Cristescu said. The Australian Government has committed up to $307.4 million towards the $384.2 million Section C project, with the Queensland Government providing $76.8 million. The project is expected to be completed in mid-2018, weather permitting and more information about the research program is available at www.tmr.qld.gov.au/cooroytocurra.

Above: The new Cooroy-Noosa Clubhouse - Palm Lakes Resort will change the way you look at lifestyle resorts. Right: Don't miss the grand opening event of the new clubhouse and wellness facilities at Palm Lakes Resort this Saturday.

Hall workshop DIARISE the date and come armed with ideas. That’s the council’s message to the Cooroy community ahead of a 26 November public workshop to discuss Cooroy Memorial Hall’s future. The council’s Acting Community Services Director Kerri Contini has urged all residents with an interest in the hall to come along and have a say. Ms Contini said a community consultation process had helped decide Cooroy Butter Factory’s future and that the council was hoping for a similar success this time. “We are also interested in hearing from people who might like to play a role in the future of the facility,” Ms Contini said. Last month the council took over as trustee of the memorial hall, which has been closed due to safety concerns since November last year. A recent building inspection showed that the hall needs at least $400,000 worth of work to fix various safety issues. To restore it properly will cost between $800,000 and $1million. Councillors and council staff will be on hand at the workshop to discuss residents’ ideas. The public workshop on Saturday 26 November will start at 9.30am and will be held in the Cooroy State School Hall, 59 Elm Street, Cooroy.

Final exhibition ENVIRONMENTALLY inspired artists will feature in Noosa Regional Gallery’s end of year exhibition that will run from 25 November to 22 January. There will be three exhibitions highlighting conservation issues and the delicacy of botanical art. The exhibition’s opening night is Friday 25 November at 6pm. This is a free event with a cash bar. CAITLIN Track works at Noosa National Park were to get underway from Monday 21 November.

New works to divert visitors AN eight-month, $800,000 upgrade of National Park walking tracks started Monday 21 November, with diversions in place for walkers. The upgrade project starts at the main entry of the park and ends at Hell’s Gates, and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) senior ranger Omar Bakhach said works would continue in staged sections until June next year. “The track will remain open, with detours in place during the works,” he said. The joint State-Federally funded project will remove and replace older, degraded sections of track, provide extra seating along the track for walkers to rest and enjoy the views, improve access for those with disabilities, develop a viewing area with seating at Dolphin Point, revegetate worn areas and update signage about the park’s features. “The first detour would be around the section of track from the main carpark dayuse area to Boiling Pot, and will be from Monday 21 November until Friday 16 December,” Mr Bakhach said. “During that period, visitors will still be able to walk to Boiling Pot lookout. However, those wanting to take the coastal track beyond Boiling Pot will need to walk back towards the carpark, and detour signage will redirect them to the vehicle service track behind the park information centre. noosatoday.com.au

“From there they will follow detour signs for about 350 metres. They’ll then re-join the coastal track at The Grove area just before Tea Tree Bay. The diversion will be well signposted. The detour won’t be suitable for wheelchairs or prams as it’s a rough gravel surface.” Works will stop over the Christmas/New Year period then restart mid-January with the project planned for completion by July next year. “For their own safety, visitors must not enter closed areas during the works and must observe signage,” Mr Bakhach said. “We apologise for the inconvenience, especially to those who use the walking track regularly, but it’s muchneeded work on a vital Sunshine Coast tourism asset. “We applied for funding on the basis that the Headland section of Noosa National Park is a major economic and tourism drawcard. It’s one of the most visited natural areas in Australia - more than 1.4 million visitors use the coastal walking track each year. “The work is a joint initiative between the Queensland Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing (NPSR) and the Australian Government.” Mr Bakhach said NPSR had successfully applied for $400,000 from the Tourism Demand Driver Infrastructure Program administered by the Queensland

Government’s Department of Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games (DTESB). “The funds will allow us to undertake improvements to sections of track along the coastal walk that missed out on upgrades during previous projects, and bring the track to a world-class standard. We also plan to enhance the lawn areas at the main entrance as part of the project.” Mr Bakhach said NPSR had invested heavily in the park’s Headland section in recent years, completing upgrades of focal points such as the Boiling Pot and Hells Gates viewing areas. “We also redeveloped the car park and day-use area in 1999, did a major upgrade of the main entrance’s interpretation displays in 2007, and carried out major track upgrades in 2003 and 2009,” he said. “Previous track work won us a STEPS disability award back in 2004, in recognition of the improved wheelchair access to natural areas. The new works will further improve assisted access to this beautiful park. “The current project will improve the tourism experience. The upgrade will complement the council’s pedestrian boardwalk from the tourism hub of Main Beach and Hastings Street to the national park.” For the latest information about the works, check 'park alerts' at www.npsr.qld.gov.au

Star marks Dawn’s efforts THERE is no doubt Dawn Christine Kelly is deserving of a star on the Ri-Con Cooroy Christmas tree this year. She passed away in June 2015 at 68-years-young but she will be remembered by the many lives that she touched while here on earth. Dawn had a love for animals, in particular boxer dogs, which were her great passion. She developed into an award-winning handler at a young age and this is how she met her husband Ray, who was learning to be a dog show judge at the time. They spent over 50 years together and had three children - Sharon, Nicole and Jason, and three grandchildren - Shauna, Darcy and Martin. When Dawn and Ray moved to Queensland they bought a passionfruit farm at Tinbeerwah and later ran the Traders Hut, Servo and Cara-

caring attitude. When she retired after many years she loved to travel - both caravanning around Australia and a number of oversea trips including Canada, Europe, New Zealand and most recently the Gallipoli Anniversary. Dawn took up pottery and loved her gardening including roses, fruit trees and other plantings. “Dawn, our darling mum, grandma, wife, sister, sister in law, aunty and friend. We will never forget you and we will remember that on some nights a star will shine over Tinbeerwah, which will be you - our shining star forever,” said her husband, Ray Kelly. The Ri-Con Cooroy Christmas tree will officially be lit up at 7pm on Friday 2 December, which will include the star dedications, carols by The Cherry Ripes and expected light snow flurries.

van Park in Hasting Street, where the Sheraton is now. They also opened a sports and bicycle store in Cooroy which they ran for many years. Dawn was instrumental in lobbying the government to start a Special Education unit at the Noosa District High School and also volunteered to help students with reading and other life skills. Dawn was also a well-known face in the food canteen at the Cooroy Pony Club days and special events. She volunteered with the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club to organise hosting for a number of the Chernobyl disaster children and also hosted exchange students. She helped to organise the early Pomona King of the Mountain events and raised funds for our community, collecting money for cancer. Dawn worked in the Cooroy post office for many years and made many friends for her

on the cover

Luxuriant choice ENTER this home and it’s clear to see this Tim Ditchfield design is a master class in luxury. Every detail of this home has been built to an exacting standard and the floorplan has been designed to capitalise on the home’s elevated position to offer stunning ocean views. From the oversized glass entry door to the impeccably-placed picture windows that frame the ocean views, everything is of grand proportion, while the New Guinea teak flooring throughout and stunning bathrooms show no expense has been spared in creating this luxurious beachside property. Living is spread over two levels with the lower-level featuring two bedrooms with walk-through wardrobes and ensuites at the front of the property, plus a guest suite

with views across the pool. This space opens out to a large covered terrace with well-equipped outdoor kitchen and a grassed area complete with a cubby house for the kids, plus the solar-heated pool with water feature. Upstairs, the master suite features an opulent dressing room and ensuite, plus a private balcony. Across the landing is a home office with built-in storage and another bedroom with a built-in wardrobe and views over the pool. The main living spaces are upstairs to make the most of the ocean breezes and views. A walkway leads down to the open-plan living, kitchen and dining where oversized glass stacker doors create a seamless transition from inside/outside living. Exceptional care has gone into

creating this living space as both functional and luxurious. Some of the features include Gaggenau appliances, a fireplace, a large sliding window on the deck to control airflow, a drop-down TV near the outdoor kitchen, and an Emperador light honed marble bench top. Add in the eight-zone Sonos music system and this space is perfect for entertaining. The property features a nine-zone air-conditioning system that allows individual temperature control throughout the residence, but the clever use of oversized stacker doors and banks of louvered windows throughout means plenty of fresh breezes can flow through the home along with plenty of natural light. This property also features a dream garage for five-plus vehicles.

Let’s look at an example of the dramatic effects that extended vacancy has on your rental returns. The property you have is worth $475 per week but you want $500 per week and it takes you four weeks to accept that it is overpriced. You drop the price to $475 and tenants are found quickly but not before you have lost $1900 worth of income chasing a higher rent. If the tenants have only signed a six-month lease then the effective rental return for that lease period has dropped dramatically to only $402 per week. Setting the correct rental price for your property is essential if you wish to find tenants quickly.

These reports are an indepth analysis of your home's worth on the rental market and it compares your property with other similar properties that have recently been rented. Be sure to question an agent that has given you an unusually high rental estimate as they may be using this as a strategy to get you to sign the property management agreement with them. Matching your expectations to reality can sometimes be difficult but it is important to not let your emotions get involved. As the property is an investment ensure you keep your decisions businesslike. Don’t base your rental asking price around your mortgage repayments and remember that the market is most qualified to set the rental price.

LETTERS Too much on show I AM writing in reference to Jolene Ogle’s story titled “Nudes Just Want Solitude“ (Noosa Today, 17 November). Why should anyone wanting to use the Noosa National Park - and specifically Alexandria Bay - be subjected to seeing people wandering around in the nude when they have no desire to and find it highly offensive? Why should people who want to use beautiful Alexandria Bay with their kids not be able to because these people feel the need to show everyone their genitals when it’s the last thing anyone wants to see. These people need to get a reality check - Noosa National Park is there for everyone to use, so long as they do it in a manner that doesn’t adversely impact other people, and this behaviour definitely impacts a lot of people adversely. If you want to get your clothes off, do it at your own home in front of people who want to see it. The debate on this subject needs to be seen from the perspective of the majority of people, not just the minority who want to show off their genitals. Matthew Bourke, Peregian.

Ticket to ride RE: “Could Noosa be the state’s eco scooter capital?” (Noosa Today, 24 November) ... bahahaha. It’s a great idea to be sure. One that most Noosa residents acknowledge but you will have to retrain/get rid of parking officers who delight in booking scooters especially around Sunshine Beach. You can’t have it both ways. Trying to look like we have a relaxed, laid back, open-minded lifestyle and yet booking scooters for parking off the road “freed from car dependency“ and from Officer 22. Delia Thomas, Noosa.

No need for fright WHETHER it is nude beaches or dog beaches, someone will always complain. However, a complaint about a streaker in the national park resulting in police presence and fines at Alexandria Bay defy logic, as the incident did not occur there. In the 16 years that I have lived here, A-

Bay has always been the secluded spot where nudists can skinnydip and sunbake in peace. To the best of my knowledge there have been no criminal incidents there, though, sadly, the same cannot be said for the national park. Call me old-fashioned, but as long as people don’t do it in the street and frighten the horses, I can see no harm in people having just one of our many beautiful beaches on which to go clothing-free. They have never tried to take over other beaches, and do no harm to other people, though melanomas may be an issue for them. A little tolerance goes a long way to making a community harmonious. There are far more important issues for locals to be concerned about, like the threat to the headwaters of the Noosa River, and the aquifers to the south of there, from coal mining in the Toolara Forest; or the question of traffic management, if pressure from the State Government, and the Federal Government’s population measures, force Noosa to blow its population cap. Joy Ringrose, Pomona.

LENSCAPE

The problem with pain I’VE got it and most of my friends have got it and if you are over 50 it is most likely that you’ve got it too, dear reader ... of course I am mean lower back pain. While not life threatening it is extremely debilitating and tiring, back pain must account for countless hours lost in industry and yet there seems to be no cure for it. An injection, if you can get one, may help for a while and rest also helps but that seems to be it. Doctors don’t have the answer and quite honestly they don’t seem to care all that much. Is there any research being carried out into back pain? I can’t say I have heard of any. It would be so interesting if a survey was done to find out just how many people suffer from this. Just a thought. Tony Taylor, Noosaville.

Where’s the care IN regards to David Wilson’s letter (Noosa Today, 17 November), I strongly disagree that Glen Elmes shows care and respect for our

THIS colourful jacaranda was snapped at Noosa Botanic Gardens, Lake Macdonald by Bronwyn Sterry. If you have a wildlife or landscape image you would like to submit for Lenscape, please email newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au children and gay community. He stated that he voted that way because there is a shortage of children available for adoption for heterosexual couples and it is his party’s policy to vote against same-sex marriages. Glen Elmes is a bigot who failed to vote with his heart and didn’t have the guts to admit it. Using a shortage of children is a complete cop out on his part. His party policies are more important to him than moral beliefs in a rapidly changing world. As for speaker Wellington, so he should be speaker. He is an independent who stood for his own policies and would not vote exclusively for the LNP or ALP. If the Libs could have formed government then I am sure they would have, so Labor took over their mess. If David holds true Christian values, then I question them.

Did you ever meet a married nun or priest? Everyone has sexual urges, so is it God’s will they live this way? Or are they gay themselves? And why are we having a Royal Commission into the abuse of children by the once trusted Catholic clergy? The evidence is finally coming out. Four Corners revealed recently how disgusting the way our government treats homeless children and you have the nerve to say two men or women, who love each other, should not marry and provide a loving home in our society today, then sir, you are not a true Christian but a hypocrite and are ignorant of a loving gay society. Roy Vickers, Cooroibah.

LETTERS Equally offended IN response to letters in Noosa Today (17 November), most people would be fine with Brenda Robinson holding discriminatory opinions, but not happy with that she also wants laws to impose her discriminatory opinions on others. She then expects those people affected to be gracious about it. Then on top of it all she gets insulted and offended when those people affected speak out. Really now Brenda - don’t you think you are expecting a bit much? I love the Australian expression “suck it up princess. This would be a perfect time to use it. As for David Wilson’s fantasies of living in a country governed by Christian sharia laws I think most Australians would prefer to live in a democracy - not a theocracy. People with creepy beliefs in the occult and supernatural best keep those to themselves. PS David for your information: Section 18C is designed to protect good folks from racists, not bigots from equality activists. Robin Bristow, Noosaville.

Not so ordinary FOR many years now I have been hearing politicians and others using the term “Ordinary Australians and finally I have decided to express my views on this matter. This expression sits very uncomfortably with me as, in my humble opinion, there is no such thing as an “Ordinary Australian“. We are all Australians irrespective of whatever discriminating label politicians, or anybody else for that matter, want to place upon us. Does this then imply that some of us are either extra ordinary or even less than ordinary Aussies. I simply believe it is demeaning and disrespectful to label any person as ordinary. We are individually blessed to live in such a lucky country and all of us should be justly proud to be called Australians without the ordinary tag.

.

Post your letters to: 36 Mary St, Noosaville, 4566 or email: newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au

And indeed, there is absolutely no need to categorise us because of supposed wealth, where we live, or any other assumed level of our importance. A little pedantic? Perhaps, but just have a look in your dictionary to see what “ordinary really means and then you will know why I feel as I do. And now, I finally have it off my chest! Terry Hayes, Tewatin.

The final word I AGREE with Llew Pointon (Noosa Today, 17 November) that the global warming debate has gone on long enough and the consensus is that both sides agree to disagree. So I will sign off with the following last comments: * How about a simple test - do the alarmists agree that the Mann, Bradley and Hughes Hockey Stick graph used as the centrepiece of Al Gore’s infamous “An Inconvenient Truth was a fabrication based on the fraudulent manipulation of temperature records. Yes or No! * Rather than peddling Al Gore’s inconvenient lie, essential reading for Grade 8 science students should be “How To Get Expelled From School by Australia’s Professor Ian Plimer. See how long it takes for them to Google it and empirically disprove all 101 points (hasn’t been done yet). Hopefully they will start thinking for themselves for a change. * A hypothesis based on computer modelling does not constitute a verifiable fact. Even the CSIRO has a rider on their climate modelling stating that models involve simplifications of real processes that are not fully understood and accordingly CSIRO will not accept any responsibility for the accuracy of the results from their models - QED. * With regard to Josh Frydenberg and the SA power blackout, read the Hansard for question time in the House of Representatives on 10/11/2016. Phillip Rutherford, Cooroibah.

Road to progress

Friends in need

CONGRATULATIONS to Noosa Council for creating an excellent access to Bluefin court from Reef Street when coming from the direction of the Civic. This excellent piece of engineering has taken the stress out of hoping the vehicle behind will see the car turning into Bluefin Court. A job well done. With the council’s ongoing discussions taking place regarding how to improve traffic flow along Noosa Parade into Hastings Street what a great opportunity to be brave and really forward-thinking by creating something special for the decades ahead. Where other countries have embraced bicycles for the obvious reasons of taking vehicles off the road and encouraging more healthy living. My wife and I have been fortunate to travel overseas on bikes for a combined total of 16 months. Where in general bicycles have been accepted and welcomed, a magnificent example of road engineering to encourage bikes was used in some countries by placing the bike path adjacent to the kerb, then a concrete barrier, then vehicle parking with the road for traffic lane to the centre of the road. With the removal of the fairly innocuous grass/tree centre area along Noosa parade there would surely be adequate room for this configuration and allow a stress-free ride into the beach, as a dedicated mountain bike and road biker, I find the act of avoiding the ever increasing number and size of boat trailers which are parked along Noosa parade the most stress full ride of the week. My thanks to Cr Frank Pardon for his interest and obvious enthusiasm to improve the existing fairly outdated situation. Be brave, council. Perhaps the relevant departments might even consider reducing the speed limit along Noosa Parade, which would add to the relaxed holiday feel of Noosa. Tony Mitchelhill, A proud resident of Bluefin Court for the past 20 years.

IT was a wet Thursday morning on 17 November when my husband and I were driving along Eenie Creek Road approaching the Reef Street roundabout. Coming over the hill I was slowing down by changing gears in the left hand lane when I realised there was no response and with the weight of our caravan behind us I tried to guide the vehicle into the right hand lane, where there were no cars, and ended up on the median strip. The right front of the van struck and uprooted the “KEEP LEFT sign and dragged it three metres forward to where we stopped. Thankfully it was before our car entered the oncoming lanes of traffic. Neither of us were injured but we were pretty shaken up. Several people stopped to check if we were okay, including the young lady who was following us in the approaching lane and was on her way to Zumba. Then a very special lady appeared and assessed our situation. She immediately offered and then phoned the police and we were able to also phone the RACQ. She stayed with us right throughout our ordeal. It was a great relief to see the first officer arrive. He was so calm and calculating. He assessed it was due to the road conditions and thought it was possible to drive off the island, which we negotiated after a few attempts. He suggested that we just go home and deal with repairs etc. I drove slowly around the roundabout as the other policeman stopped the traffic and, still shaking, we returned home. Our last sight of the two officers was seeing them struggling to put the “Keep Left sign back into the empty hole. Your handling of our traumatic situation was exemplary. You are a credit to your profession - thank you. To the wonderful Norah, who stayed with us through it all and was such a great help, thank you so very much. We have lived in the Noosa Shire for 24 years and count ourselves extremely lucky, for with people like this, we are surely blessed. Jan and Jim Christian, Peregian Beach.

The OKA boys just keep getting better.

Unmissable experience By Hollie Harris SUNSHINE Coast festival mainstay OKA is back to send the unsuspecting crowd into a hypnotic frenzy at The V Room in early December. OKAs Indigenous connection to place and country to create

their signature feel-good Australian earth sound results in an irresistible blend of influences spanning house, big beat, reggae-dub, roots, jazz and world music. Born from a relaxed street jam over 15 years ago, OKA continues to bring the joy, fluidity and simplicity of their positive music to a

much larger, growing audience on a global stage, independently selling over 160,000 albums. Sharing the stage with inspirational acts such as Arrested Development, Finnley Quay, Xavier Rudd, Kinnie Starr and Digging Roots, OKA has appeared in festival line-ups throughout Austra-

lia, Asia and North America and Canada. Their mix of dance and down tempo electro beats marinated in the mystic spiritual traditions of the Dreamtime has gained them a strong reputation worldwide and a loyal following. Described as a mash up of Bob

Marley, Stevie Wonder and the chemical brothers on acid playing in a steaming rainforest with a didgeridoo, OKA will put on yet another unmissable show on Friday 9 December at The V Room (Villa Noosa) at 8pm. Tickets are $20/25 from www. moshtix.com.au

ABBA can still draw a crowded house ABBA was one of the world’s most influential bands, their music is still played in households across the globe and millions still worship their teen idols. Earlier this year they performed at a private party for the first time in over 30 years and the public’s love affair with this band has reignited. ABBA Live is the best tribute band Australia has ever seen and will take you back 30 years to when you could feel the beat of the tamborine - and you can catch them at the Tewantin Noosa RSL this Saturday night. ABBA Live refuses to be just another ABBA tribute show, each of the team members are specialists in their respective instruments. Lynelle Leighton proudly presents the hauntingly memorable vocals of Agnetha Falkstog, and is the creator of ABBA Live and England born Shelley Davina Burton brings a European flavour to the international cast and noosatoday.com.au

thrives in the role of Anni-frid Lyngstad with her fantastic vocal ability, vibrant personality, and unlimited energy. Scott Macfarlane is perfect for the role of Bjorn with his boyish good looks, outstanding vocal talent and guitar artistry. Dane Leeson plays the role of Benny Andersson with passion and enjoys every opportunity to share the wonderful music with any ABBA lover who dares to cross his path. Performing with a live band, full choreography, spectacular costumes, and brilliant production, it is without a doubt the best ABBA show to emerge from Australia. If you want to see ABBA Live then head over to the Tewantin Noosa RSL on Saturday 26 November, at 8pm. Entry is free but make sure you get in early to grab a spot as this show never fails to draw a crowd. Bookings for dinner or the courtesy bus can be made on 5447 1766 or at reception.

LIVETODAY

Father of Islam By Jenny Carter AN impeccably researched and very readable account of one of the most important historical figures, whose ideas and their various interpretations are affecting world events in our time. Muhammad was born an orphan, and to be born without a father was to be without an inheritance. Mecca in the 6th century was not kind to orphans. The town had become wealthy and the old tribal customs which afforded some protection to widows and orphans were breaking down. He was placed as an infant with a Bedouin family, in whose care he learned to handle the tribe’s camels. Back in Mecca for a couple of years at the age of six, the child Muhammad noted that with wealth came greed, instability and social injustice between rich and poor, and these early impressions were to influence what came later. Back with the Bedouins, Muhammad was employed on the camel caravans where he worked his way up to become an independent agent representing the interests of others. The journeys of the caravans were fascinating. The wealthy could buy a share in them,

just as people today buy into the stock market. Muhammad was comfortably off, happily married to Khadija whose interest in the camel caravan he represented, when he was first drawn to the solitude of Mount Hira and experienced his encounters with the angel Gabriel. Psychologists will say that vigils of solitude and fasting can lead to hallucinations. Think Moses up Mount Sinai. Reflecting on the practices of Christianity and Judaism, Muhammad saw these as incomplete, distorted, and that God was now perfecting His previous revelations to earlier prophets, and appointing him as the prophet of new revelations. He determined to bring this new improved faith to the people, but was faced mainly with derision and rejection. Expelled from Mecca, he retreated with a band of followers to the oasis of Medina, and from there he began a series of raids, wars and political moves compelling all unbelievers to change to the new religion, Islam. The beheadings that so shock civilized society today are reflected in the beheading of a Medina Jewish tribe who refused to convert.

The Sunshine Coast six-piece are renowned for their energetic and passionate live performances, enthralling crowds across Australia and the world and bringing people together since their formation in 2009. Six years on and 2015 was no exception to the rule, with the coastal boys taking their music far and wide, performing over 20 shows in the UK, including huge

HUSBAND and wife team Paolo and Holly bring true Italian character to all their ice-cream, sorbet and frozen yoghurt products at Gelato Classico Noosa. Nestled in the Noosa Fair Shopping Centre next to Coles, these passionate foodies which create everything delicious onsite fresh daily, crafted in the traditional Italian artisanal way using Paolo’s Italian family recipes. They also serve smooth organic coffee, house-made Italian lunch savouries and healthy gluten-free options, and the frozen yoghurt has already gained a following with its enriched probiotics, served alongside fresh seasonal fruit salads.

Pop by and watch them making gelati live through their unique purpose-built viewing window with their beautiful antique Italian ’EFFE’ machine where gelati ice-cream is extracted by hand and paddle as it once was some 50-years ago in Italy. There are no secrets at Gelato Classico, here in Noosa: just fresh, creamy gelato and zinging fruit-filled sorbets produced in small batches. Customers on Facebook have called Gelato Classico out of this world - “Don’t bother with a trip to Gympie Terrace or Hastings Street. The best gelato is in Noosa at Gelato Classico near Coles. The salted caramel is to die for,” they wrote. Others say they “just love this place! You can always rely on Holly and Paolo for

impeccable service and the perfect coffee, every time.” Try their freshly squeezed juices, which highlight Noosa’s wonderful local fruit and veg, along with smoothies and milkshakes. They love to support Queensland and local farmers, so they use Queensland dairy products, and they keep it so local that the passionfruit, lime, lemons, oranges, nuts, strawberries, and mandarins you will find in their products come right from the Noosa hinterland. All the gelati and yoghurt products are gluten free, are low in sugar, use plant-based stabilisers, and all sorbets are dairy free and gluten free. Men's Shed Pomona president Doug Bettens welcomes special guests to the site for an informal chat and tour of the workshops.

Men's Shed Pomona members with special guests State Member for Gympie Tony Perrett, Federal Member for Wide Bay llew O'Brien, Unity Water CEO George Theo and Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington in front of the new mural.

Artist Denis Sussmitch with his mural portraying one man helping another with shed doors that are always open.

Makeover for Men's Shed By Jolene Ogle THE Men’s Shed movement is all about having a yarn and on Saturday 19 November the Men’s Shed Pomona welcomed special guests to their workshop for a chat, some cake and a celebration of two years’ hard work. Dreams for a Men’s Shed in Pomona started in 2002 when a group of locals met at the Pomona Community House for a chat, but two years ago their dream became a reality when they were given a lease for the current site. Unitywater played a big role in helping the group establish their meeting space by organising a lease on the unoccupied shed at the old forestry depot on Reserve Street in Pomona and then helping with water

and sewerage connections. Since then, the original group of six has grown to 20 and together they have restored the 150-year-old shed, built a new shed with a kitchenette and bathroom, and built a shade house for growing plants. Group president Doug Bettens welcomed Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien and his family, along with State Member for Gympie Tony Perrett and his wife Michelle, Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington and Unitywater CEO George Theo to the site on Saturday to unveil a new mural and tour the workshops. Mural artist and Men’s Shed member Denis Sussmitch said he wanted to capture the essence of the Men’s Shed in the painting that now adorns one side of the 150-year-old

woodworking shed. The mural is all about friendship and helping a mate with the work showing two hands helping each other illuminated by a light in front of doors that are always open. Group member Colin Thompson said the Men’s Shed group is about so much more than working with wood and metal, it’s about “talking rubbish and having two hour morning teas”. “Men used to go to the pub to talk, but we don’t do that anymore,” he said. “So we come here now. I don’t know anything about working with wood or metal, but other guys can show me. But that’s not what it’s about. It’s about talking and the comradery.”

Mr Thompson recently suffered his second heart attack and said he owed a large part of his recovery to his time spent at the Men’s Shed Pomona with his fellow group members. “There are others with health issues, so we all know what it’s like,” he said. “We have the comradery here.” Other group members shared the sentiment and said they love being a part of the Men’s Shed because they can make new friends, share issues and enjoy male company without sitting at the pub. Some members said they enjoy passing on “old time” skills to new members such as wood work and welding. The group are now busy preparing for the coming Pomona Markets

Christmas feel in Cooroy goes green IT'S beginning to look a lot like Christmas, thanks to a wonderful group of Christmas elves who have been hard at work for months to put together the magical community celebration that is Christmas in Cooroy. The first sign of all this hard work appeared on Saturday when a record number of elves volunteered to decorate town. Donning their new Christmassy green volunteer shirts sponsored by NoosaCare Inc, these dedicated volunteers put up tinsel, baubles, garland, lights and decorations throughout Cooroy in a whirlwind of activity on Saturday morning. Richie's Bakery and Fox and Hound Espresso rewarded them for their efforts with free coffee, tea and cold drinks which was much appreciated by all. noosatoday.com.au

The next round of excitement will be on Friday 2 December with the official lighting of the Ri-con Cooroy Christmas Tree at 7pm outside the Cooroy RSL. This year the ceremony will be even more special with stars dedicated in memory of Bill Savory, Dawn Kelly, James and Sophie McGrath, William and Jessie Cambage and Amy Payne. There will also be carols by the Cherry Ripes at the tree this year, and there is a 100 per cent likelihood of snow flurries forecast for this year. To top off the evening, there will be a Christmas movie, “Elf” on the library rooftop from 7.30pm. Even more fun can be had on Saturday 3 December from 4pm with the Bendigo Bank Street

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, thanks to this great group of elves. Parade, the Noosa Hinterland Plumbing Great Santa Race, Cooroy Fish n Chips, Santa Sack Races and free rides, face painting and lots more free entertainment at the Christmas in Cooroy festival.

on Saturday 10 December where they will sell the plants they have grown in the shade house to help raise much-needed funds. “We don’t get much money,” Mr Bettens said. “We generally have to do it tough, but I guess we like it that way. It makes us more passionate and resourceful.” The group also have a range of items they are getting ready to selloff to help raise funds for replacing tools and stocking their metal workshop. New members are always welcome at Men’s Shed Pomona and anyone who is interested in learning more about the group can phone Brian Lawson on 5485 2865.

End of school, with feeling By Hollie Harris EMOTIONS were running high at Good Shepherd Lutheran College for both seniors and parents last week as the end of schooling was upon them. Year 12 students took the Walk of Honour through the school through a crowd of students from Prep to Year 11 who lined the pathways clapping and cheering as the seniors soaked up the atmosphere and admiration of their peers. It was a day full of mixed emotions for both students, and onlooking par-

ents, and something that past walkers have described as one of the most moving and proud moments of their final days of school life. After a huge week of events for Good Shepherd seniors, who say they are both excited and sad to be winding up this stage of their lives, the group headed off to schoolies week. Senior Hugo Webster said he had been experiencing a lot of different emotions but was really looking forward to the next challenge. “I’ve actually lined up a few months of work experience at WIN News as a

camera operator next year. It’s going to be awesome. I did some work experience this year through school and I asked if there were any opportunities after I finish, so I’m really excited about that,” Hugo said. A well-deserved schoolies break is the plan for most of Year 12s. “Im off to the Gold Coast next week which should be amazing,” he said. The Walk of Honour has become a tradition at Good Shepherd Lutheran College as a rite of passage for Year 12 students as they say goodbye to their school years.

Parents gathered proudly along the pathways watching on with plenty of emotions as their children walked through the clapping and cheering crowd. Proud parent Kirsten Simmonds said her daughter Jessamy was very excited but saddened at the same time to be leaving all of her freinds and a school she really enjoyed attending. “I’m so pleased for Jessamy, she has done really well. She is having a gap year before going off to Uni and she wants to learn about work in the real world first.

“She is interested in genetics and the schools science program has been just excellent so if you’re science minded, you can do very well here,” Mrs Simmonds said. “For schoolies, she is off to Bali with a group of friends, which will be so amazing for her and then back into real life!” The ‘Walk’ through the campus was accompanied by a collation of the top songs from each year of their school life which began will in the chapel and finished at the HPE Centre where they were all given blessings for their future.

Charging into the ocean MORE than 150 Sunshine Beach State High Year 12 students took to the water on Friday 18 November to celebrate their graduation. In what has become a rite of passage for coast graduates, the students gathered on Noosa Main Beach before charging into the ocean en masse. Family, friends, lifeguards and police watched on as the graduating class cheered and sang songs while jumping waves and splashing each other.

Beachgoers looked on as more than 150 students ran for the water.

Students congratulated each other as they said goodbye to high school. 48 NOOSA TODAY | Thursday, 24 November, 2016

LOCAL lawyer and moustache enthusiast Michael Sobey has once again ditched the razors to raise funds for men’s health. The worldwide Movember campaign encourages men to grow a mo in support of men’s health while raising funds for cancer research and getting men talking about health issues. Michael has taken part in the Movember challenge for a number of years and always holds an annual Movember Charity Lunch, with this year’s lunch planned for Friday 25 November at Gaston Bar and Grill from 12.30pm with proceeds raised donated to Movember. Michael said his motivation for the Movember challenge was close to his heart. “With family members and close friends affected by prostate cancer and depression I believe it’s important that we not only get more discussion about them but try to find cures,” he said. The Movember Foundation is the only global charity solely focused on men’s health and aims to raise funds that deliver innovative, breakthrough research and support

MANY locals may not realise that when it comes to health and well-being, the Noosa Leisure Centre is home to a selection of practitioners and health solutions and this month, men are the focus. November is the month that men grow-a-mo-for-abro as part of a global and local movement to support men’s health with Movember and at Noosa Yoga School, men can try a yoga or meditation class for free until the end of November. Owner/director Marina Noar can’t grow a mo but she knows from first-hand experience what happens when a man is hurt or unhealthy. When her husband broke his neck in 2007 he was left paralysed with a spinal cord injury and a long journey ahead to rehabilitate. Yoga brought relief for pain and restoration and wellbeing for them both and he was eventually able to return to walking.

“The nervous system is a nebulous part of our anatomy,” Marina said. “Practising yoga harnesses the physical, emotional and mental factors affecting the nervous system. It enables people to feel good every day. Yoga is particularly good for men because it is empowering and reduces stress. It increases energy, focus, strength and flexibility,” she said. Situated on the ground floor of Noosa Leisure Centre, Noosa Yoga School provides over 23 weekly classes and this month is perfect for the blokes to get in and try something highly beneficial to mind and body. The Leisure Centre is also home to an upstairs clinic with an experienced naturopath, a myotherapist, massage therapists and a polarity therapist. See www.noosayoga.net or call 0402 341 273 for more information and pop in and try out free Movember yoga or meditation classes this month, guys.

Bowen Therapy is quickly becoming recognised as a valuable tool in the treatment of sports injuries and body maintenance in intense training programmes. Bowen Therapy can be used to treat acute injuries from sprains and concussion shortly after they have occurred because of the gentle nature of Bowen moves as well as expediting healing of more chronic sports injuries such as Plantar Fasciitis. Internationally, many athletes performing at elite levels have found great value in having regular Bowen sessions, not only to treat injuries, but to assist in reducing recovery time as well as preventing future injuries by restoring musculoskeletal function. Treatments release tight muscles, improve circulation and facilitate removal of toxins from the system for optimal muscle function. A Bowen Therapy session can assist with lymphatic drainage, rehydrating fascia, releasing adhesions muscle spasms and cramping. It can relieve swelling of ankles and knees, release hamstring and calf tension improving overall flexibility. A session can relieve neck and shoulder tension, jaw tension and back pain as well as to help the body restore symmetry to hips following groin strain and much more. With over 25 years in the health industry and background as a Registered Nurse, Noosa Bowen Centre’s Bowen Therapist Natalie has a deep understanding of what the body requires to regain balance and form. Her client base includes many local athletes from runners and cyclists, to basketball, tennis, football and golf lovers. All aboard for Bundaberg POMONA BOWLS LAST Saturday 47 bowlers travelled by coach to Bundaberg for the club's annual bowls trip. A fabulous weekend enjoyed by all even though there were two huge storms and Sunday’s heat knocked a couple of bowlers. A big thanks to Burnett and Elliott Heads Bowls Clubs for their hospitality. Wednesday was the club’s annual Cancer Charity Day. Plenty of bowlers supporting this day with proceeds going to Brain Cancer research. Thank you to Jocelyn Rabjohns, who sponsored the day in memory of her sister who died from brain cancer at 10 years old. Winners of the day with the highest margin was Maureen Dodt’s team from Albert and Veronis O’Connor and her team took second place with the lowest winning margin. Thursday evening bowls is growing in number - so come along and have bowl in the cool of the early evening. No green fees to pay until Christmas. Friday Twilight bowls - winners were Col Carruthers and Rick Goulding with +10 with runners-up Denise Debus and Bettina Winkler with +7. Jack-

pot not won and carries over to next week. Saturday final of the Men’s Triples between Rob Roebuck, Rick Goulding and Bill Alford against Mark Edwards, Russell Murray and Charlie Dewhirst. Bill’s team took the lead and were well ahead when Charlie’s team found their ’mojo’ and a royal battle was played down to the last end with Charlie leading 20/19. However, luck on the last end went to Bill and his team, who picked up two shots to win the game 21/20. Congratulations to both teams on a great bowls game. - with Kitty and Jack TEWANTIN NOOSA BOWLS SATURDAY Jackpot Bowls - Winners: Alex Williamson and Ron Evans; Runners-up: Fabio Cantori, Raymond Day and John Morrow. Mixed Pairs Club Championship final - Winners: Kerrie Wilson and Tony McAnelly; Runners-up: Jenny Lonie (substitute for Mary Ross) and Alan Shaw. TUESDAY Three Bowl Triples - Winners: Dot Imber, Jan Zemler and

Jenny Lonie; Runners-up: Judy Ingram and Claire McGrath (Pairs Game). WEDNESDAY Mens Bowls - Winner: Rodney Gunderson and Peter Renwick (2 wins +9); Runners-up: Neil Walsh, Ian Sanday and Cliff Hackett (1win +16). THURSDAY Jackpot Pairs - Winners: Mal Lloyd and Ian Sanday; Runners-up: Dennis Coulter and Neil Walsh. FRIDAY Friendly Friday - Winners: Ann Booth, Denis Robeck and Bryn Whitcombe; Runners-up: Tony Taylor, Irene Land and Ken Johannesen. By Jack Mangrove THE Noosa River has again come up with some great fish. There has been plenty of school jew through the system, the ski run and between the lakes has been holding some good fish, live baits and paddle vibe type soft plastic have been the way to go. There are still good numbers of trevally around in Woods Bays early in the morning, tailor are also amongst them with surface lures like the River2sea Skinny Dogs working well. Mangrove jack are in good numbers in the upper reaches of the river, getting up early and heading up the river pitching hard body lures at the banks is a perfect way to target these fish. Give the Lucky Craft pointers ago, these are perfect on the baitcaster, using a baitcaster outfit will give you the pinpoint accuracy you need to get close to the snags where these red devils love to live. Elsewhere in the river, there has been some good size whiting getting caught in the shallows of the frying pan and Weyba Creek - prawns, worms and yabbies have claimed a good number of the fish. Good flathead have also been inhabiting areas like Weyba Creek and the sandbanks and drop off down towards the river mouth. Brightly coloured soft plastics or diving hard body lures have claimed some great fish. Crabs are also plentiful in the upper reaches of the river, remember you can only take the bucks and they must make size, 15cm across the widest point of its carapace.

Justin Tierney with a 65cm snapper. On the beach, the dart have been everywhere. This is great fun for the kids with a small piece of pilchard or a prawn on a size four bait holder hook cast into the gutters will almost guarantee a fish. The gutter on the Noosa North Shore has also seen some quality tailor, jew, and some bigger sized flathead, as the high tide gets later and the moon-rise is also later the period between sunset and moon-rise is the prime time for jew, big baits of mullet fillet, tailor fillet or even a big clump of worms may see an outstanding result. Fishing Offshore this week was tough with conditions less than perfect for chasing reef fish and pelagics. For those boats that managed to get out, there is still good numbers of fish. Spotted mackerel and the odd Spaniard were showing up on the

closer reefs and in Laguna Bay, with the majority of the action being around bait schools. Trolling hard body lures is a great way to cover ground while you are making your way to your favourite fishing ground. When you pull up, the good old pilchard floater has been working well with most of the pelagics swimming mid water. Another species of fish that is hanging around the bait schools are long tailed tuna. These fish are a great test for anglers and can really stretch the arms. Sunshine Reef is starting to fire with trout and sweetlip. Chardons Reef is also holding good sized snapper, cobia and good sized jew. On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures.

REGARDLESS of what the surfing purists may think and hope, the stand up paddle brigade is here to stay. No clearer evidence was needed than last weekend’s amazing finish to the ISA World SUP Championships in Fiji. After judging the men’s and women’s finals held in powerful double-overhead Cloudbreak, Zippy Pearson, long-time head judge at the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing, said in an email: “Just back to the hotel from an epic day of SUP surfing out at Cloudbreak. It will go down in history as one of the best days ever in ISA competition.” That’s a big call from a guy who is not only one of the world’s most respected surfing judges, but is also a hell of a competitor. I caught a bit of the men’s final on the webcast, and have just been through the vast photo gallery on the ISA site, and it’s hard to disagree with Zip. The sweepers simply shredded a challenging break on a very challenging day. Hawaii’s Zane Schweitzer and Australia’s Shakira Westdorp emerged victorious in the men’s and women’s surfing finals and gave

their teams a major boost in the team rankings, with Team Australia hanging onto its lead from Team France through Sunday’s paddle finals, thanks in large part to Michael Booth taking out the men’s SUP distance race, and Matt Poole and Noosa’s Lachie Lansdown going one and two in the prone paddle. Hawaii’s Schweitzer took the short route to the grand final, never falling from the main event. In the dying minutes, Schweitzer pulled into a gaping barrel, flew out and finished the wave with solid turns all the way to the inside as the crowd on boats in the channel erupted in cheers. The nine-point ride gave him the world title over team-mate Mo Freitas. In an equally exciting women’s final, Gold Coaster Shakira Westdorp, a multiple SUP champion at the Noosa Festival who had to fight through the repecharge round in Fiji, finally claimed gold in her fourth ISA world title final. “It’s a dream come true,” beamed Westdorp. “I’ve won two silver medals and I finally won the gold, so I am so stoked.” Here comes the world! With almost half of the available competitor entries filled three months out, the 2017 Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing looks like being the most international event yet. As per usual, a huge contingent of Californians and Hawaiians has already signed up, but

the big surprise so far is the land of the rising sun. Of 21 competitors signed for the Men’s Open Amateur, nine are from Japan. The Noosa Festival has always had great support from the Japanese surfing community, and their polite, fun-loving representatives have made many friends here, but this year it seems like some one is really beating the drum on Noosa’s behalf. Another interesting early statistic: of 15 entries so far in the Women’s Pro, 10 are internationals, seven of them from Hawaii. Oh, and we have two surfers from mainland China and one from Argentina in the mix. The SUP community has also been stirred into early action by the indefatigable Paul Jones, with an amazing 72 entrants already in the racing divisions. If you want to know more about the festival, visit noosafestivalofsurfing.com or check out the Facebook page. Bring on next March! Thanks For those of you with limited knowledge of American culture, today is Thanksgiving Day, and all over the Disunited States, one in two people will be giving thanks that there are still a few weeks to go before President Trump takes over the White House. The rest, I suppose, will be giving thanks for the wall that will soon prevent their underpaid

gardeners and nannies from going home to see family. We’ll be celebrating tonight with friends who endured 30 years in America before seeing the light and moving to Noosa, and I’m sure it will be a joyous occasion despite the politics, with a traditional feast to die for. And I’m sure we’ll find plenty to be thankful for. We once celebrated Thanksgiving with friends in the California high desert, and I remember being enchanted by the traditional ritual of moving from person to person around the table, before the roast turkey was served, and asking each what they had to be thankful for. Some of the guests actually had to pause for thought, which was odd since no one was ill or penniless. But I worked out that it was because they all had such an embarrassment of riches to choose from. Being bereft of both enormous wealth and inclination toward organised religion, I had no such problem. When it comes to giving thanks, you can’t beat the big three - family, friends and health. That’s what I’ll be silently thankful for tonight, as I salivate over the turkey.

Respect for their service sport flags today

LAST Friday seven members of the Noosa Club - four of whom are Vietnam Veterans - attended a fundraising luncheon at the Alexandra Headland SLSC. The purpose of the fund-raiser was to support the Alexandra Nippers club. On this occasion the guest speakers were two gentlemen who need little or no introduction - Mr Keith Payne and Mr Ben Roberts-Smith, both recipients of the Victoria Cross. On being introduced by Ron Rankin, life-member of Alexandra Headlands, the guests of honour were well received. Ron then went on to explain that since the publication of the book Those Who Served - Surf Lifesavers at War, many clubs were now starting to look at their club's wartime history and publically acknowledge their contribution. Using the book as a reference, it is interesting to note the stats regarding Alexandra, Coolum and Noosa clubs. For Alexandra, 40 members have served in various wars, while Coolum has 60 and Noosa 43. Regarding life saving in general, Sir Adrian Curlewis, who was president of Life Saving Australia from 1934 until 1975, is considered by many to be the father of modern life saving. Sir Adrian's only break occurred when, as a captain in the AIF, he spent four years ('42-'45) as a POW in Changi. To his credit, when he was named as a member of the Major-General Gordon Bennett group to break through enemy lines and escape to Australia, he declined, choosing to stay with his men.

The honour roll of our people who have served should be a thing of pride. After being introduced by Ron, both men spoke on their military service. This was followed by a question and answer time. Among the questions there was one was of particular note. It was regarding their work assisting returned service personnel. Keith pointed out that there were some 55 suicides among this group, and he emphasised that in their opinion this was totally unacceptable. Regarding this, his thoughts were that rather than discharge people on the grounds that they were no longer medically suitable to continue their military service, they be permitted to remain in-house, and while doing so, have available the necessary assistance that would enable them to make a healthy adjustment back into civilian life. This is definitely something to be seriously considered. Who knows how many of our lifesavers have served in Afghanistan and will return home needing a helping hand? At the completion of the lunch and in appreciation of their open and honest discussions our guests, Keith Payne VC and Ben Roberts-Smith VC received a standing ovation - and rightly so.

NOOSA’S BEST SPORTS COVERAGE

Peter McGregor, Keith Payne VC, Ken Edwards, Paul Jenkinson, Peter Williams and Ben Roberts-Smith VC. With that jolly little fat man about to come knocking on doors, our IRB teams in both Noosa and Sunshine Beach are busy with training, assessments and rostered patrols. As we all know, Christmas time is also family walking time, and with walks through the beautiful Noosa National Park, visits to the small unpatrolled beaches, are unfortunately high on the agenda. So the need for our IRB teams, dedicated life savers who are pre-

pared to put in the long hours. Not only that but when big sporting organisations need water safety for their swim events, these teams are the backbone. Noosa's Trevor King is just one example of how much work our dedicated patrolmen take on. Last weekend he performed his duties as a patrol captain and also jet rescue ski driver - this is apart from his duties with the IRB teams helping to prepare trainees for their final as-

sessments. He is not the only one, for over the hill our mates in Sunshine Beach have members performing the same workload - and this is what life saving is all about. In the world of competition keep an eye on Noosa's beach sprinter James Gelling. This young man not only performed well at the Fastest Man on Sand but also backed up to win the under-12 sprint final at the recent Noosa Gift Track and Field Carnival.

Great night for Contenders By Ron Lane TO come up with a new concept for fund-raising that is acceptable within a community is one thing, but to keep it going for several years is another. However this is exactly what Damien “Butch” Smith and his support team of workers have done. The event known as the Contender of the Codes, first made its appearance back in 2009, and except for a brief break has been on our local calendar ever since. On Saturday evening, at the Leisure Centre in Wallace Drive, Noosaville, some three hundred fans turned up for yet another evening of boxing and socialising. Under the banner of the Contender of the Codes, representatives of the various football clubs stepped forward to don the gloves and take part in three, three minute rounds of the noble art of selfdefence. The main benefactors of this evening of hit and miss, were the Sunshine Butterflys and all clubs taking part. The fights - of which there were seven - were very entertaining and all fighters gave their best. Large cards which indicated the round that was about to start, (for example, 3) were carried around the ring by attractive young ladies, suitably dressed for the occasion. Between fights several articles of sporting memorabilia were auctioned and in some cases the bidding was very competitive. It was interesting to see the sporting groups and business houses that had supported the evening by booking ringside tables. A major supporter of the evening was without doubt the Noosa Box Office Gymnasium. Under the control of owner and noosatoday.com.au

Event organiser Damien 'Butch' Smith with the football code contenders. head boxing coach Israel Kani, the NBO's involvement was threefold; with Israel acting as pre-fight coach, match maker, and fight referee. Many of the fighters took the opportunity to prepare themselves by attending training and coaching with Israel, and then on the evening Israel gave further support by performing third man duties as referee. To have someone with Israel's background refereeing, ensures that on this charity evening no one gets hurt. Perhaps the fight of the evening was between Dolphin Rugby Union and Pirates Rugby League representatives. After three rounds of some heavy punching, the Dolphin won on a split decision. Both fighters received a standing ovation for their performance. At the end of the evening the major award (based on a points system), the Mick Hamilton Sporting Community Shield, went to the

Dolphins Rugby Club. Prior to the presentation, Butch called all contestants into the ring and thanked them, the sponsors and all the support team, for “their magnificent input”. In particular, he thanked the crowd for turning up when he said, “Without your attendance this would not be possible. I thank you one and all.” Mingling and speaking with the crowd, one thing was repeated over and over, “we should do this sort of thing more often.” Rob Pervis, president of the local AFL Club, who was there supporting his players, said: “We need to take our clubs more into the community and get together.” A young man in his late teens summed it up beautifully when he said: “A great night with all us blokes from different sports mixing together - socialising. This sort of thing gives us a better community.” Wise words, from someone so young; and all for a good cause.

IT was the seventh year of the Noosa Gift and without a doubt it would could be rated as the ‘’Magnificent Seven.’’ Entries were an all-time record of 60, and with three winners of the Stawell Gift (two past and the present) in attendance, all was set for a great Gift. With perfect weather and a good track, it had the makings of being the best ever and looking at the final stats they had it all; no-one walked away disappointed. In the lead-up to the final, which was sponsored by the Noosa Surf Club, there was a major surprise when current reigning Stawell Gift Champion Isaac Dunmall, failed to make the final eight. In the words of Bruce Duncan, president of Queensland Athletic League, “It is the biggest number of entries ever, but most important, it is all quality fields.” It had a great atmosphere. Noosa officials decked out in bright floral shirts and the track rich green, and firm. Well organised, well run and no upheavals. All that was needed was a great final, and that is exactly what we got. Running off a front mark of 18 metres, 15-year-old Noosa schoolgirl, Samantha Stanley, shocked the meet when she crossed the line in first place; just edging out Jarrod Whittaker 11.26sec and another Noosa member Zane Branco in a time of 11.40sec. Now this bubbly young school girl

has created history; not once but twice. First, by being the first female to win the final, and second by being the youngest. Her time of 11.20sec means that by looking at a breakdown, she has run (at fifteen years of age) 92 metres in 11.20. In the words of chief starter and organiser Ian Smith, “For someone so young this is an incredible result.” With Samantha's club-mate Zane Branco finishing in third place, it was definitely Noosa's night. Well done to the Noosa Elite coach Mick Hooper, who trains both Samantha and Zane. The ladies 110m final was won by Patricia Taea in 12.7sec, second was Toea Wilis 12.76, and third to Larissa Chambers 12.99. Patricia's win makes her the first to win back-to-back ladies' titles. In another major final, the Pacific Ford 70m Dash, Brendan Seibuhr finished first, Joel Peters second and Johal Adamovkis third. In the Under 12 Juniors, first was James Gelling, second Zac Ridgeley and third Luke Vitagliano. James Gelling is another young athlete to watch. Representing the Noosa Heads Surf Club in the major beach sprints Fastest Man on Sand, his performance was again outstanding. Congratulations to all the schools who attended and lifesaver beach teams - it all adds to a great carnival.
