Amping up girl tradies Geelong apprentice Hannah Terry hopes her success as an electrician provides the spark for more girls to enter the traditionally male-dominated trade. Hannah won a gold medal at this month’s national WorldSkills competition, alongside fellow Gordontrained apprentice Luke Scott. “To other females considering an apprenticeship like mine, I’d say, ‘Go for it’,” Hannah said. “You can achieve anything with the right attitude, passion and a willingness to learn and try your best.“ Hannah’s success as part of mechatronics category team have put her in line to join Australia’s Skillaroo team at an international WorldSkills in Abu Dhabi next year. Hannah began her apprenticeship at Alcoa before moving to Viva’s Corio refinery. “With the right apprenticeship I knew I could really make something of it and the possibilities would be unlimited,” she said.

Hands off mayor voting, jury told By Luke Voogt Geelong residents should keep their mayoral vote, according to an online survey for a Citizens’ Jury deciding the city’s next council structure. Fifty-nine per cent of 956 respondents in the Democracy in Geelong survey wanted to retain the directlyelected mayor. The jury of 100 residents will

deliver its recommendations to the Andrews government on Saturday, including councillor and ward numbers and how the mayor should be elected. Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins described the jury as money well spent. “We want to hear from Geelong residents about how they think their council should work,” she said.

was blank. Several had one or two line answers or failed to address one or more questions. Submitter Stephen Hogg wanted the vote scrapped to prevent “wellknown, well-funded individuals” continuing to have a “greater (say) over the core matters of our local government”.

“The Citizens’ Jury was a great way for this to happen.” However the jury’s written submissions defied the survey result. The jury received 28 submissions, with 13 wanting the mayoral election scrapped, 10 wanting it retained, and the rest blank or unrelated to the mayor vote. Two submissions were anonymous, one had no surname, and one

Barwon Water in viability test for new Otways dam By Luke Voogt Barwon Water will investigate “viability” of a new dam in the Otway Ranges. The water authority confirmed the investigation to the Indy this week, saying it had suspended plans announced last month to sell Dewing Creek land which was previously earmarked for a dam. Barwon Water’s Carl Bicknell said in October that catchment modelling showed insufficient water was available for a large dam. “Any substantial increase in water harvesting for drinking water use would impact on other water users, such as agricultural diverters, and the environment,” he said in October. Mr Bicknell said Geelong’s supply system was

secure and did not need for further investment in water sources for at least the next two decades. But this week Barwon Water announced it would delay the sale until next year. “A decision on the future of the land currently held on Dewing Creek will be made after completion of the urban water strategy,” Mr Bicknell said. The strategy’s development would examine long-term sources for the region, including a storage on Dewing Creek, he said. Polwarth MP Richard Polwarth welcomed Barwon Water’s decision to delay the sale. “Barwon Water has made a responsible decision to take another look at the Dewing Creek site,” Mr Riordan said. Community forums at Winchelsea during October expressed “loud and clear” concerns at the sale, he said.

“There were fears that this prize asset was going to be sold off.” Mr Riordan was pleased Barwon Water had reconsidered its position following his representations to parliament. He said a secure, reliable, long-term water supply in times of “climatic uncertainty“ was a “strong community desire”. “We welcome the re-consideration of the Dewing Creek site and trust the urban water strategy will be in line with local community expectations.” Barwon Water purchased the former farmland at Dewing Creek in the 1990s as a potential dam site. The previous Brumby Labor State Government commissioned a weir on the site despite Labor’s then no-new-dams policy.

Cats pick women The Cats have named 42 players for its first VFL Women’s team after 160 turned up to compete for places on the list. VFL Women’s coach Paul Hood said the selection was tough at the club’s inaugural Talent ID Day. “It’s been a difficult exercise cutting the squad down to just 42 but we’re really pleased with the calibre of athletes we have selected.” The pre-season squad includes women from the Geelong as well as Bacchus Marsh, Kew, Sunbury and Lake Wendouree. The coaching panel took a youthful approach to selection, with most of the team aged under 25. The list included 17 former Geelong Magpies players and 10 women from other sports, including three-time GFL netball star Renee Garing and Geelong Supercats captain Anna Teague. Baseballer Leslie Anglin, Australian gymnastics champion Emily Ramsay, steeplechaser Isabelle Gerardi, futsal representative Carla D’Alessandro and ultimate Frisbee representative Hannah Mangan will also line up for the Cats. Eliza Shannon, a promising talent and member of the Geelong Falcons Youth Girls Academy Eliza Shannon earned a place after playing in under-16 and under-18 All-Australian football teams in 2015. Pre-season training begins Tuesday night. Other squad members are Emma Allen, Temikka Beeston, Abbey Bertram, Cassie Blakeway, Maddie Boyd, Hannah Burchell, Simone Craig, Emily Crawford, Marianna Anthony, Cheryl de Groot, Lucy de Groot, Emma Delaney, Michelle Fedele, Demi Grant, Alisha Habib, Michaela Harding, Cassandra Hynes, Jordan Ivey, Maddison Janssen, Millie Klingbeil, Madisen Maguire, Lily Mithen, Shae-Lee Murphy-Burke, Brodie Pedretti, Riley Shapter, Katrina Simmons, Jess Smith, Brooke Surgeon, Laura Taylor, Teresa Telford, Lara Williams, Krista Woodroffe, Jaime Woollett and Tayla Zammit.

In Brief Record run Run Geelong has raised more than $320,000 to refurbish Geelong’s public hospital maternity ward, organisers have announced. A record 12,813 registrations helped deliver the cash windfall at the eighth annual run, the organisers said.

Storm ‘epidemic’ A fatal thunderstorm epidemic has strained Geelong’s hospital emergency departments and ambulance service. Hundreds of people sought treatment for breathing difficulties after a sudden weather change brought on Monday’s incident, which led to the deaths of four people in Melbourne.

Board returned Geelong’s board of electors has returned unopposed, the Cats have announced. Alistair Hamblin had retired but Colin Carter, Bob Gartland, Justin Andrews, Craig Drummond, Hugh Seward, Kate Spargo and Diana Taylor will oversee the club again in 2015, the Cats said.

Koala’s ‘managed’ Cape Otway’s “overabundant” koala population is undergoing a new management program, according to the State Government. The program involved fertility controls and “small-scale translocation” to prevent “over-browsing” of the koala’s preferred local tree species, the government said.

Bob’s back Former Cricket Australia chairman Bob Merriman has regained his place on Queenscliff’s council after the resignation of Helene Cameron. Victorian Electoral Commission said Mr Merriman won a countback to fill the “extraordinary vacancy” soon after last month’s council elections.

‘Charming’ towns Airey’s Inlet and Lorne are among Australia’s 10 “most-charming beach towns”, according to a survey of travel writers. Fifty writers responded to the TravelMag survey, praising both towns in a list also including national tourism icons such as Broome, Byron Bay and Port Douglas.

On board

ALL SMILES: Netballer Renee Garing at the Geelong Cats talent ID day, where she was one of 42 women to make the team.

The State Government has appointed the chief of a Geelong lobby group to the board of Urban Renewal Authority Victoria. Major Projects Minister Jacinta Allan said Committee for Geelong’s Rebecca Casson would be a “great asset”.

More than one sausage sizzle might be underway at readers’ local Bunnings this weekend, according to a private investigations company. The hardware chains’ car parks were hot spots for love rats to conduct affairs, Heartbreakers research revealed. “In one particular case we caught the culprit in the act during the day in 30C heat,” the company said. No word on whether the incident included sauce and onion, though. The company also identified bushland, public toilets and roadsides as popular cheating sites. Classy! And watch out reaching for popcorn at the movies - cinemas were also on the list. The results reflected a “massive trend increase toward infidelity in weird and public places”, said investigator Luke Athens. And bad tidings indeed for the cheap motel sector. Surf Coast residents might have to reverse a common practice in northern Australia and learn Aboriginal as a second language given their shire’s rollout of indigenous facility names. The shire this week unveiled Kurrambee Myaring Community Centre as the latest addition, explaining that the first two words meant ‘merry laugh, here is the place’.

Connecting people to jobs

Other indigenously-named new facilities include Banyul Warri (‘hills’ and ‘sea’) Fields, Parwan (‘magpie’) Soccer Pitch, and Narrodya (‘female meeting ground’) Netball Courts. And then there’s Djilla Tjarri Park, which has nifty playground and skating spaces. The name sure must challenge little tackers: “Mum, please take me to diller tally…err…didja tiejar… ahh…jickily jarrickers…umm...the bloody skate park!” And pity the poor traders down the Great Ocean Road who can’t take a trick with road closures. After months of lost business following landslides and flooding damage in September, the road will now partially close again this weekend and next for bike rides. “This on its own may not sound catastrophic,” local MP Richard Riordan said on Thursday. However, it comes on top of a summer ruined by fires, school holidays ruined by floods and landslides and another two days closed for public events.” And right at the start of summer, too. Support local business - plan a daytrip down the coast for lunch and a little shopping sometime soon.

AAMI ‘resolving’ burnt client claims By Luke Voogt Insurance giant AAMI has resolved four of the seven remaining claims for houses lost in Wye River’s Christmas bushfire. The resolutions follow Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson's accusations earlier this month that AAMI was “trying to screw” victims with coverage shortfalls of up to $250,000. “Of the three remaining AAMI claims, we are working very closely with our customers to finalise a settlement,” an AAMI spokeperson said

‘Forensic audit’ for missing funds By Luke Voogt The State Government will conduct a “forensic audit” of Bellarine Community Health (BCH) following alleged misuse of funds, Bellarine MP Lisa Neville has announced. The audit would examine all transactions related to a BCH employee’s alleged dental service fraud, Ms Neville said. The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) will conduct the audit, including an examination of BCH’s financial controls and its response

to the alleged fraud. BCH’s annual general meeting identified “significant” concerns with its ability to meet community needs, Ms Neville said. “We will continue to press Bellarine Community Health to make the changes needed to rebuild confidence in the community. We also need to consider whether other organisations are better placed to deliver the services our local residents need.” BCH board chair Hazel Ingram said the health provider would co-operate with DHHS. An external auditor audited BCH each year and found its financial statements in order for the past

financial year, Ms Ingram said. The previous state-commissioned review found that BCH’s governance, financial and risk management processes were sound, she said. Ms Ingram disputed Ms Neville’s criticisms of BCH’s ability to provide services to the Bellarine. “Feedback from clients and partner organisations about service delivery and service delivery by staff was overwhelmingly positive.” A small “group of the community”, Bellarine Aged Care Association (BACA), had run “a sustained campaign” against BCH, Ms Ingram said.

BACA president Tim Walsh said BCH had sold two community aged care facilities in 2014 without adequate consultation. “Our campaign has simply been to bring back transparency to BCH,” he said. BCH - which is largely state-funded - is not the first local health service the government has targeted this year. Last month Health Minister Jill Hennessy appointed a delegate to Geelong Hospital’s board and ordered a review of its finances, after it recorded a $13m deficit.

The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) has released a provocative advertisement depicting an horrific crash between a car and young boy to encourage people to rethink their speed. It features stills of a car crashing into a boy on a bike at seven different speeds, in a car park shaped like a speed dial. “Speed doesn’t always cause crashes but it always determines the level of injuries sustained,” said TAC chief executive officer Joe Calafiore. “The speed you are travelling can be the difference between a fright and a fatality.” At the slowest speed, the boy avoids the crash. At the fastest speed the car punches into a light post, sending pieces of the bicycle flying. The ad is part of TAC’s recent Rethink Speed campaign - encourage “safer speeds” in its push Towards Zero. “This campaign has a message for all of us,” Mr Calafiore said. “We need to be mindful of our surroundings and the conditions when choosing our travel speeds. “As drivers and riders we can’t control every-

thing on our roads and we can’t stop the unexpected but we can control the speeds we travel at. That can be enough to prevent serious injury or death.” Rather than focussing on speeding Rethink Speed encourages Victorians to choose to travel at speeds that are safe, legal and appropriate for the conditions. “Speed limits don’t determine the speed we should be travelling at,” Mr Calafiore said. “They set the maximum speed we are allowed to travel at and in reality it won’t be safe at all times and in all conditions.” The campaign will appear on television screens, roadside billboards, websites, radio and social media in the coming weeks. “We want everyone to rethink the speeds they travel at and choose a speed that is not only legal, but is safe for the conditions,” Mr Calafiore said. “In any crash involving a car or motorbike, speed determines the level of injury. Increase your speed and increase the likelihood of severe injury or death in the event of a crash.”

Give Geelong ‘a team’, says Jeff By Luke Voogt Geelong should adopt Melbourne’s model of electing a mayor and deputy with their own team, former Premier Jeff Kennett has told the Indy. The system increased the likelihood of residents electing a team that could work together under the mayor, he said. “I’d very much like to see a situation where the (Geelong) mayor and the deputy are popularly elected together.” Jeff Kennett Geelong’s previous council elections system “left the popularly-elected mayor without a strong base from which he or she could implement their policies”, Mr Kennett said. City of Melbourne elects its mayor and deputy on the same ticket and allows them to nominate a council team. The elected councillors also represent the city as a whole rather than wards. Mr Kennett said directly-elected Geelong mayor Keith Fagg, who quit after 10 months and “colourful and flamboyant” successor Darryn Lyons lacked civic experience and council support. “(Lyons) had great ideas but no experience in managing a team. That lack of experience came to the fore as he tried to drive his programs through.” Mr Kennett, who once labelled himself ‘Minister for Geelong’, said the city was an “unpolished diamond” where council discord distracted from tackling youth unemployment and infrastructure demands. “Geelong has great potential but that potential hasn’t been reached.”

Call to scrap vote From page 1 The Citizens’ Jury was “no replacement for local democracy”, said shadow local government minister David Davis. He described it as a “snappy forum” run by “expensive consultants”. “The whole process has been a farce, spending almost $250,000. The money could instead have been spent on a range of worthy projects.” Mr Davis had “no doubt” the Government intended on using the jury to take away residents’ mayoral vote. Geelong polls over a decade have found overwhelming support for residents choosing the mayor. The support reached 78.5 per cent, state parliament heard in 2011 before introducing the vote in 2012. The government appointed NewDemocracy Foundation to run the jury. Director Iain Walker said the jurors considered Geelong’s local governance issues “expansively”. “We’ve definitely seen that people are very capable of thinking beyond the next how-to-vote card,” he said. Mr Kennett was among six of eight invited speakers who declined to address Geelong Citizens’ Jury as it developed a recommendation for the city’s next council structure. Former Labor Lara MP Peter Loney recommended adopting a model similar to English councils, with an executive team of the mayor, a deputy and one other. Under Mr Loney’s model, 12 councillors would represent a ward each and scrutinise the actions of the executive team.

VINTAGE: Rose Steele at last year’s Geelong Revival.

Uphill battle for Revival supremacy Vintage cars, bikes and frocks will crowd the waterfront this weekend for Geelong Revival Motor Festival. Eastern Park will transform into a course for more than 80 classic cars as the Victorian Hillclimb Championships come to Geelong for the first time. The festival will host round one of championships with competitors racing against the clock in the challenging 900-metre course. “We have had an astounding amount of interest in the new hill climb this year,” organiser Scott Pigdon said. The event team worked for months with State Government, Geelong council, Confederate of Australian Motorsport (CAMS) and emergency services to plan the course. “It paves the way for Geelong to host the National Hillclimb Championship in future years,“ event director Nicholas Heath said. Hillclimbs are one of the oldest forms of motorsport, where drivers test their skills on a wind-

ing, uphill course. The first known hillclimb took place at La Turbie near the French Riviera in 1897, while the first Australian version was on 13 June, 1938, at Rob Roy, Victoria. The Revival Hillclimb will run during Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 3pm, and competitors will get two runs each day. The festival will also celebrate the 60th anniversary of its historic quarter-mile sprints, featuring some of the original cars which raced in 1956. The sprints have brought some of the world’s best drivers to Geelong over the years including Sir Jack Brabham, Stirling Moss, Dick Johnson, Jim Richards and Alan Jones. Tourism Minister John Eren said the festival had been flagship on “Geelong’s world-class calendar of events for many decades”. Event organisers expect 60,000 visitors across the weekend, with over 1000 cars and bikes on display and 300 vehicles competing.

The critical opportunity that presents itself in the first few years of a child’s life to shape development, to ensure that children become healthy, positive young people into adulthood, who achieve their full potential, is now recognised as an important underpinning of social planning and community responsibility. The City of Greater Geelong is seeking the services of suitably qualified and experienced consultant/s to prepare a new Municipal Early Years Plan to provide a future vision and strategic action plan for the municipality in response the development and delivery of early childhood services, including support for young children and families for the period 2018 to 2022. This project builds the foundations of two previous Municipal Early Years Plans that have been developed by the City of Greater Geelong and a range of related social planning frameworks. It is also expected that the development of a new Municipal Early Years Plan would draw from and address key issues and learning which has been identified as a result of evaluation of previous plans.

Banned trawler’s fishing elsewhere

IT'S BACK: The Portarlington Ferry will continue for the next three years

Three-year deal for ferry By Luke Voogt

with Port Phillip Ferries operations director Murray Rance. “Everything she talked to us about she’s delivered on, which has been just fabulous,” Mr Rae said. Ms Neville said the State Government was working to raise speed limits on the Yarra - which could slash the ferry’s journey by 15 minutes. “During the busy summer months when tourism swells across the Bellarine, this will be a great way to commute to the city,” she said. Port Phillip Ferries owner Paul Little said the service would open the bay to Bellarine commuters, and tourists from Melbourne and abroad. “We hope to extend the service to other regions of our bay once services for Portarlington are established.” The government expects to complete its $15 million Portarlington Safe Harbour in early 2017.

The Portarlington Ferry will continue for at least three years after a deal between the State Government and Port Phillip Ferries. Bellarine Ferry Group’s John Rae was thrilled following Monday morning’s announcement the ferry would run every day for the next three years. “We’re just over the moon,” he said. “It’s an exciting day for Portarlington.” The service resumed Tuesday with a 5.15am ferry from Docklands to Portarlington, followed by a 7am return trip. Port Phillip Ferries will run three services each day, with two during peak-hour times on weekdays. More than 400 people lined the docks at Portarlington for 20 minute celebratory cruise around the Port Phillip Bay Monday morning. “We had too many to take today when the

ferry came in and had about 100 sitting on the docks,” Mr Rae said. The longtime campaigner described the announcement as a win for public transport on the Bellarine. “This is the only direct form of transport that is available for the Bellarine to Melbourne’s CBD,” he said. Mr Rae said the announcement had come at the perfect time: at the start of the tourism season. “This town’s population swells by 22,000 over the holiday season. From the other end of town the operation will focus on tourism and bringing people to Bellarine.” The ferry could cause an “explosion” of new tourism businesses on the Bellarine, Mr Rae said. “I’ve already had one inquiry from a gentleman who wants to operate the blue pedal bikes they have in Melbourne - except motorised.” Bellarine MP Lisa Neville attended the event

Controversial fishing trawler Geelong Star has left Australian waters, with the Dutch owners reflagging and renaming the ship. Parlevliet and Van der Plas BV said on its website that the Geelong Star would no longer fish in Australia. Recreational fishers and environmental groups have long campaigned against the super trawler. Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson was one of a chorus of voices campaigning against the ship. “There’s no doubt the campaign against this vessel helped to drive it from Australian waters,” she said. “It was an embarrassment that this vessel was named after our great city. The Geelong Star was no star of the sea and certainly no star of Geelong.” The company stated it could not reach a commercial agreement with the local partners in Australia. Earlier this week Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) located the trawler off the coast of South Africa. The ship was flying the Dutch flag and sailing to the Dutch port city of IJmuiden. The company has reinstated its original name, KW 172 Dirk Dirk. During transit and after leaving Australian waters, AFMA removed the vessel’s Australian Shipping Register and as a non-Australian flagged vessel it could no longer operate in compliance with the Fisheries Management Act 1991. AMFA imposed a fishing ban on the ship in January after reports of albatross deaths. Ms Henderson called on the Prime Minister to banish the vessel during a Torquay rally in October 2015, “The protected marine mammal deaths caused by the Geelong Star were completely unacceptable,” she said. The previous operators of the trawler, SeaFish Tasmania, told a late-2015 Senate committee that the vessel had killed nine dolphins and 12 seals that year.

NEWS

Letters The heard had spoken The power of the people has spoken again in Geelong and it is pleasing to see that the council administrators listened on Geelong Saleyards (Indy, 18 November). The yards’ closure left hundreds of farmers with little option to access a livestock exchange. City Hall’s backflip on the closure should be seen as a positive; a willingness to listen. The administrators worked with a community that has a proud history of breeding and growing livestock and using the saleyards to trade and mix socially with like-minded people. Yardings reduced over the years as the saleyards’ condition deteriorated, due mainly to previous councils’ unwillingness to undertake significant maintenance and upgrades. The saleyards sit in the middle of residential and industrial developments, so its tenure is limited given the restrictions that will be imposed on managing the site in the future. The administrators made the right decision to reopen the facility with maintenance to meet OH&S standards, which will allow small coastal farmers to access the yards at a competitive cost. It will also allow the administrators to develop an agribusiness strategy including a livestock exchange and, potentially, a farmers’ market. People with inspirational ideas should engage with the city and G21 to explore the opportunities for a new exchange to replace the grand old lady that has served the region for almost 150 years. Simon Ramsay MP Member for Western Victoria

Bad sign for dog owners I couldn’t believe a new bylaw sign, which I was fortunate to notice, stating: “From the 1st December to the 18th December dogs must be on a leash at all times, and from the 18th December to the 31st January dogs are not allowed in the park, period, at both Rippleside Park and St Helens Beach”. I appreciate these are peak-usage times for both residents and visitors to both areas and that

ing every aspect of global warming science and/or its consequences as wrong and depicting any attempt to fix them as folly that will cost the Earth. But look closer and you’ll see that their arguments always need to allege or imply hidden agendas, cover-ups and conspiracies. That is the trademark of a denier website. Mr Saclier also uses emotional language as in “delight of environmental activists” versus “detriment of unemployed, pensioners”. It’s meant to set people against each other. In politics, people are sick of it. Conspiracy theories are like that and have no place in a proper, working society trying to work out the best way to deal with major challenges. Let’s move past them and get on with it. Jukka Tuisku Barwon Heads

their enjoyment could be spoiled by dogs running around but to put a blanket ban on dogs and their owners is ludicrous. Surely it would be of benefit to all to allow dogs off-leash before 9am and after 6pm. I don’t know whether this bylaw is in place for the council area of the beach. I’m also unaware of any public discussion regarding this matter, which is disturbing, especially if caught with a fine. Denis Wetherall Rippleside

Pad up for the CBD With the Andrews Government pseudo-governance trio of part-time council administrator appointees, two of whom, despite generous salary packages choose not to live locally, it’s not unreasonable to hope for a collective, independent local voice or two to fill the grassroots representation void and get on with the provision of pertinent input. Why, then, aren’t the Geelong Chamber Of Commerce and Committee for Geelong standing up for their members and broader community on the following issues that the administrators will otherwise continue to pad away like Boycott: an 11am-11pm curfew on trucks in the CBD, other than for essential deliveries; ridding the CBD of parking meters; a campaign with inducements to attract investors and tenants into the by-andlarge ghetto precinct south of Malop Street; and a return of the efficient Malop Street runabout distributor? They should also show the gumption to get a celebration of music and the arts as an annual component of a summer and autumn agenda for Simonds Stadium. Richard Worland Manifold Heights

Conspiracy theories denied Tim Saclier said he was one of those watching “green plans to destroy our society” (Letters, 11 November). Wow. His claim was no surprise to anybody who has looked at the deniers, though. There is now a whole alternative reality on the internet that is far beyond any semblance of genuine scientific scepticism. Geelong Refinery update Message from Thys Heyns

General Manager Refining

2016 has been another big year for Viva Energy and our Geelong refinery. Apart from operating safely and reliably, our key priorities have been our investment program and our business improvement plan, both of which are designed to support Viva Energy’s commitment to keep manufacturing in Geelong. A hive of activity at the refinery has seen over $150M being invested into the facility. 120 people have been building the new crude tank, and work continues to increase the pipeline capacity between Geelong and Newport. Our largest investment has been the second of our major maintenance projects known as “turnarounds”. This one, which was valued at $100M and involved a workforce of more than 1000 people, was successfully completed in early November. This investment will ensure that our refinery continues to operate as safely and reliably as possible over the next four years. What’s more, together

with the contractors involved in the turnaround, and in recognition of meeting our safety targets for the project, we raised over $120,000 for our community partner, Very Special Kids (VSK). This significant donation, made to VSK on 22 November, will support 82 families of children with a progressive life-threatening condition living in our region. While the turnaround itself was completed successfully, the industrial action that disrupted the project and caused significant losses to our business was very disappointing. Incorrectly portrayed as a protest about safety, the action reflected opposition to changes associated with our business improvement plan. The continued success of the Geelong refinery is good for the economy, and good for jobs in Geelong. So, we are more resolved than ever to accelerate the changes necessary to support the long-term success of the facility. In 2017, we will focus on improving performance, increasing production,

and driving productivity to secure the viability of the refinery. Success will require support from employees, stakeholders and unions to preserve the more than 700 jobs at the refinery for the long-term. It will also mean the community contribution made by Viva Energy each year can continue. In March, Viva Energy launched its new national community program called Jigsaw. At a local level, we have embraced the program and are working closely with our Geelong-based community partners Headspace, and Northern Futures. We have also raised important funds for local organisations including Give Where You Live, Salvation Army, Movember, and the Australian Cancer Council. I thank you for your support in 2016, and for the opportunity to engage with you on our transformation journey. I look forward to working with you all in 2017, and wish you and your families a very safe and Happy Christmas.

REFINERY NEWS

New Crude tank Construction on our new $50 million, 100 million litre crude oil tank is continuing to progress, with half the tank wall now up. Designed as a floating roof, this is being constructed inside the tank. The roof will float up when crude oil is placed in the tank, and while in operation will rise and fall depending on crude oil levels. The tank will increase the refinery’s storage capacity by 40%, and is expected to be operational by mid-2017.

Turnaround

Did you know? The Geelong Refinery is the only manufacturer in Australia of avgas, solvents and bitumen. Bitumen made at the refinery is being used on an important infrastructure project in Victoria – the widening of the Tullamarine Freeway! So next time you drive to Melbourne airport – think about Viva Energy’s Geelong Refinery.

14 GEELONG INDY Friday, 25 November, 2016

The Geelong Refinery accounts for more than 50% of The Port of Geelong’s trade, equalling 6.3M tonnes per annum.

In November we successfully completed our $100 million maintenance project, by far our largest investment for 2016. This massive investment of time and money - known as a turnaround - occurs every four to six years. During this incredibly busy time more than 1,000 people worked onsite to totally overhaul major sections of the refinery. We wish to thank our many employees

and contractors for their tireless work, as well as the community for understanding the increased levels of activity coming and going from the refinery during this period. Now that the work is done, it is very satisfying to see the safe and successful completion of over 18 months of planning, and to know that the result will ensure the refinery continues to run safely and efficiently for years to come.

COMMUNITY WRAP UP

Our Community Very Special Cause Safety is always our number one priority. Together with our contracting partners, and to help keep a focus on safety top of mind during our recent turnaround event, we committed to donating to Very Special Kids (VSK) a minimum of $2,000 for every day that our safety targets were met. The partnership with VSK meant giant pink pigs made frequent appearances around the refinery, reminding us every day of our commitment to both working safely, and raising as much money as possible for this important charity.

We were incredibly proud on 22 November to present a cheque to VSK’s CEO Michael Wasley for $120,000. This represented one of VSK’s largest donations for the year, and will help them continue the incredible work they do within our community. VSK helps more than 900 families across Victoria (82 in our own region) who have a child coping with a lifethreatening condition.

Apprenticeship Gold for Hannah WorldSkills is considered the Olympics of trade skills, and our very own Hannah Terry has brought home the gold medal in the mechatronics category. Coming to us from Alcoa, Hannah credits her pre-apprenticeship at The Gordon - and the wealth of knowledge and skills learnt in her role at the Geelong Refinery - for sparking her love of the electrical trade.

Jigsaw is our new national community program, investing

When asked for what advice she had for young people like herself considering apprenticeships, Hannah said, “The key to a successful apprenticeship is having the right attitude, a passion and willingness to learn and trying your best.”

Helping Role Models in the Local Community

In the Community Earlier this year we introduced Jigsaw, and we’re pleased to report that the pieces are all continuing to come together.

“With the right apprenticeship I knew I could really make something of it, and the possibilities would be unlimited”, said Hannah.

Congratulations to MI Recovery, Camp Liocla, and Arrdoch Youth Foundation, three local not-for profit organisations that collectively have been awarded over $13,000 as part of the Viva Energy Role Model Grants. These were the inaugural rounds of Viva Energy’s Role Model Grants, awarded to organisations that address issues of mental health, substance abuse and addressing poverty through education.

$3 million over the next three years to support mental health and substance abuse issues both nationally and locally, and especially within Geelong communities.

Round The Bay headspace

Over 65 Viva Energy bike riders tackled strong winds, dust and rain, riding 210kms to raise money for one of our community partners - The Smith Family. The riders raised over $17,000, which was then matched by Viva Energy. As a result the team raised over $35,000, coming second

out of 99 registered corporate teams an impressive effort! This money will help disadvantaged kids get the support and resources they desperately need, to keep up in the classroom and make the most of their education.

The Geelong community helped tear down the “Big Stigma” as part of headspace’s Mental Health celebrations. Stigma plays a major role in preventing people from seeking help for mental health issues. So on 10-11 October, members of the community were invited to the Geelong Performing Arts Centre to tear down a piece of a wall, representing the stigma associated with mental health. Over 100 people attended. This project was organised by Geelong’s headspace’s youth advisory group known as the Youth Future Crew, and supported by Viva Energy.

With the hottest November day in years on Monday it’s looking like a scorching summer ahead. For those who are looking to escape the heat with cricket on the TV or a cold drink on the couch, Mist Heating and Cooling has them covered. Mist is Geelong’s newest and premier domestic air-conditioning installation company which has the expertise to keep homes home frosty when it’s blistering hot outside. According to its website, its customer service and cost are the best in the market. Mist’s vast industry connections mean not only a competitive price but they can take care of service needs for the home or office. With a seven-year guarantee on workmanship, customers will never be left out in the cold – or the heat. The company stocks brands such as Mitsubishi and Bonaire as well as top Australian brands Braemer and Brivis, which employs hundreds of Victorians. And the company offers a free quote to find out what system works best. Mist has a large range of split-system air conditioners available in either ‘cooling only’ or reverse cycle for when winter returns. For those who are after a heating and cooling for a single room, the split system is the ideal product. Using advanced technology, the system has become much more efficient. The company also offers ducted split systems, which can heat and cool an entire home. They work similar to split system, just on a larger scale. The unit is connected to a series of outlets which will be strategically positioned around the home to ensure consistency throughout. FINALLY FRIDAY

Things will go wild for The Troggs By Luke Voogt Legendary UK band The Troggs will make Geelong’s heart sing next weekend in a one-off performance 50 years in the making. The gig would be the band’s first ever in the city, original lead guitarist Chris Britton told the Indy from Sydney. “We had to get there eventually didn’t we?” he said. “I know we’ve been to Melbourne a few years ago. We’ll look forward to that one then.” The band shot to stardom in 1966 with the now iconic hit Wild Thing, followed by other chart-toppers With a Girl Like You and Love Is All Around. “It was just a matter of being in the right place at the right time,” Britton said. “We got the demo of Wild Thing from Larry Page and we loved it. Within six months it all happened and we got exposure all around the world.” Fifty years later the band’s success still hasn’t sunk in for Britton. “We thought it would probably hang about for a couple of years at most,” he said. “We’re as bemused as everybody by the fact it’s still going on.” “It’s such a simple easy song to play and learn. It’s the first thing kids learn to play. “It’s had some incredible covers. Everyone’s had a go at it – from the Muppets to Hendricks.” Britton’s path to stardom began coveting a Spanish guitar in the window of a ‘High Street’ store at the age of nine. “That was before rock and roll was invented,” he said. “It was on sale for nine guineas. I managed to save up five quid over my birthdays and Christmas – my Dad and my uncle paid for the rest.” Britton would go from performing at pubs, weddings and birthdays, to playing in front of

WILD THING: Chris Britton, right, with The Troggs. tens of thousands with The Troggs. “The strangest one was when we did Times Square on NYE in 2000 – we had pole-dancing girls in bikinis,” Britton said. The 72-year-old is still going strong and playing with the same energy. “Well ... at least I like to think I am,” he said. “I’m old enough to know better but not wise enough.

“I’m looking forward to carrying on until 2051 because that’s the next festival of Britain - I’ll be 107 by then.” The band is travelling Australia for the 50th anniversary tour for Wild Thing. “It’s a magic great big county – you’re so lucky,” he said. Despite the fame, Britton still prefers a raucous pub to a packed concert hall or stadium. “You don’t get the same buzz as smaller shows,

you really don’t make contact with them really,” he said. “It’s like going back to your origins.” Britton said he was more-than-happy for the Geelong crowd to drown out the band by singing along. “That would be fantastic. As long as they’re enthusiastic I don’t mind!” The Troggs will perform at Barwon Club on 3 December.

FINALLY FRIDAY

Classic aura of Morgan’s organ Barry Morgan will roll into Geelong next week, his favourite organ hanging from the roof of his 1985 Toyota Crown Royal Saloon. “The Hammond Aurora Classic - she’s a beauty,” he said, “I just strap her on with those occy straps and off I go.“ “These days Adelaide looks perfect in the rear vision mirror.” Barry spoke to the Indy this week as he attempted to pry 20 cents loose from a shopping trolley in the City of Churches. The iconic salesman rose to fame on ABC’s Spicks and Specks and has played on TV and at gigs around the world. But no gig can top the highlight of his career to date. “It’s coming to the realisation that Kylie Minogue and I are the same size in hot pants.” Barry was brimming with excitement as he prepared to show locals the magic of the electric organ. “I can’t wait to get out there and touch you all,” he said. “It will be very much like a Tupperware party except less plastic and more organs.” “It’s all my different songs. The funny thing is all the things sound the same on the home organ.” Barry urged Geelong residents to whip out their safari suits and get along to his latest show. He had just pressed his freshly bought number from Martin’s Menswear in Adelaide’s Sunny Side mall. “I’ve brought my mine out of the closet,” he said,

What’sat on

“I’m the Patron Saint of Safari suits.” Barry wants to take audiences to where no organ has gone before with his latest offering Spaced Out. He will play all the great cosmic hits from Star Wars to Space Invaders and beyond for space travellers and organ lovers alike. “There’ll be Rocket Man and, of course, I’ll have to do a tribute to Bowie’s Space Odyssey,” he said. The Indy also spoke to the comedic genius behind Barry - Melbourne’s Stephen Teakle. “He’s just trying to take some money off a busker,” Barry said, as he passed the phone to his creator. Barry spawned from Teakle’s tribute to the dynamic and effeminate 1970s organ salesman. “They were a lot of fun but quite tragic, really,” he said. “It’s just a celebration of the common man from the second hand car salesman to the real estate agent.” A talented organ player, Teakle forsook his gigs as a keyboards player and music teacher to concentrate on the cheesy Barry. “It really worked out being cheaper than going to therapy,” he said. But he was a bit worried about the “40-something” Barry, who, like his mother, has taken a liking to Bex powder. “She liked the white power,” Teakle said. “I keep ensuring him that it causes internal bleeding but he finds it quite refreshing.” Barry Morgan will perform at Geelong Performing Arts Centre next Friday. GEELONG WATER SAFETY AQUATIC CENTRE

No accidents aim

Geelong’s No.1 Swim School Swimming Lessons - An Integral part of every child’s educational journey.

Peak learn-to-swim authority the Australian Swim Schools Association (ASSA) has announced its inaugural national No-Drown-Town campaign, set for 28 November to 4 December. Nationally, ASSA member swim schools and their swimming families - including Geelong Aquatic Centre - will actively participate in educational aquatic activities, as well as learn and live ASSA’S Safer Layers of Protection philosophy: Swimming skills Adult supervision Fences and gates Emergency plan Reduce the risk ... for safer swimming. “The No-Drown-Town week encourages safer swimming, safer decisions, safer communities, and safer Australians, and we congratulate Debbie Gill and the Geelong Aquatic Centre for taking the plunge, promoting and participating in this milestone event,” ASSA president David Urquhart said. ASSA says the week-long water safety initiative is a reminder to take care of those nearest and dearest, especially in and around water, and is reflected in the No-Drown-Town mandate, which is: 1. If you Act Personally, 2. You’ll Influence Locally, and 3. Affect Nationally. These three No-Drown-Town ideals, are represented within the logo, and it’s interconnecting, colourful links.

Take care of your nearest and dearest. “The first link is vital to safer swimming and learning to swim, and is highlighted in red; this focuses on taking responsibility of your immediate family and is seen as the highest priority,” said ASSA CEO Ross Gage. “The next link is coloured blue to reflect how water flows through communities. It also shows how our personal decisions can ultimately impact upon our local community, the neighbourhood, schools and even councils. “Finally, the green link resembles the growth, strength and wellbeing of our country, standing unified to create a national, No-Drown-Town,” concluded Mr Gage. The ability to swim well is an asset for life and one that can give safety, pleasure and potentially, health and fitness benefits for the whole family throughout their lives. H2O Swimming Works recently commenced operating from the new Goodfellow Aquatic Centre at Kardinia International College, Bell Post Hill. They cater for all levels of Learn to Swim, and squad training from ages 2.5 years onward, right through to those wanting to race or those simply wanting to swim for fitness. There is no-one more qualified to teach swimming in Geelong than the owner, Anita Killmier. Anita was a National Gold medallist swimmer and water polo player with a background in primary teaching. She has five generations of swimmers and coaches in her family and still swims for fitness and the occasional Masters competition. Group and private lessons are available along with holiday intensives. Holiday intensives are a proven way to fast track progress and with summer coming and plenty of fun in and around water to be had, this is an ideal time to get swimming. Swimming as a fitness sport is known as one of the best forms of exercise as you age, and increasingly on the ‘bucket list’ of many. Adults are well catered for at H2O with lessons for the most fearful beginner to fitness squads

You’re never too young (or old!) to learn how to swim. 162310

that cater for all abilities and interests. Those swimmers both young and old wanting to train for competition have pathways in place to reach State and National levels via the MH2O Swimming Club. Program details and inquiry/booking form can be found at http://www.h2oswimming.com. au

“The dealer alternative”

For North Geelong mechanic Andrew McKee it’s the ‘one percenters’ that make the difference. “We care a lot about our customers,” he says, He and his employees at Drive Safe Service Centre “go above and beyond to help” their customers. Showing customers before and after photos, removed parts and even videos of their work- it’s all just part of the service Drew says. “It’s about taking the time to explain it to the customer.” The small things count, he says, like driving customers home if they live nearby or toys to keep the kids happy. “I’ve got a family myself. If they’re playing while mum or dad is fixing up the bill everyone’s happy.” And he must be onto something, as he’s getting plenty of referrals. “We’re flat out, which is always a good problem,” he says. Drew has been a mechanic for 16 years, but he had to fight to get there. “Things weren’t good for me when I was a teenager; I was out of home early,” he said. He completed an introductory automotive course for disadvantaged youths when he was a teenager. “I was top of the class and I got an apprenticeship out of that,” he says. Drew opened Drive Safe Service Centre in August 2015. When asked to describe his business in a word it was diverse - as a VACC member his business can handle anything mechanical and electrical, from handbook servicing to LPG repairs. “We work on old to new including light trucks and tracks, vans and buses,” he says. He and his staff are always taking courses to refresh and expand their knowledge. “For our business to thrive we have to continue adapting - so we never stop learning,” he says. And he tells his customers to always Drive Safe ...

Whether it’s for business or pleasure, Truck Car Rentals has transport requirements covered. Truck Car Rentals has an extensive range of vehicles to suit a variety of requirements, owner Graeme says. “Being a small local operation, our prices are more competitive than bigger companies. “Plus, we can offer a high level of customer service because we know the local needs.” Truck Car Rentals recently expanded its fleet to include 46 seater buses, adding to its 12 and 22 seaters. “A lot of schools around Geelong use our services when they need extra buses,” Graeme says. “We have a lot of local clubs and groups hire the smaller buses as well as families for get-togethers or outings.” Truck Car Rentals has several enclosed trucks suitable for do-it-yourself removals, requiring only a car licence. A range of light commercials and vans, tray trucks, cars and single-axle trailers for the weekend handyman are also available. “Our rates are lower during the week so that adds flexibility to small business vehicle requirements,” Graeme says. Truck Car Rentals also has everything up to prime movers and trailers, great for logistics businesses trying to cope with extra demand. “If your vehicle is in for a service or repairs, Truck Car Rentals has the answer. “Whatever your needs, we can assist in finding the right vehicle for the job.” Truck Car Rentals is at 215 Station St, Corio, phone 5275 8288 or visit truckcarrentals.com.au.

Machined alloy wheels add a touch of spice to the Hyundai i30 Series II SR.

It’s number one, with upgrades By Derek Ogden Model range Be afraid, be very afraid: that seems to be the message Hyundai is sending out to rivals of its bestselling i30 after the hatchback became Australia’s favourite vehicle for the first half of the year. Almost straight away the South Korean car maker fired a further shot across the small-car market bow by adding upgrades to the sporty Series II SR and SR Premium variants. Now it has taken the wraps off the next generation i30, to hit the streets early next year, which it says digs deep into the Hyundai DNA and is touted as a car for everyone. In the meantime, leading off the latest makeover of the current i30 are a new design of 17inch, grey-metallic machined-face alloy wheels and red-on-black interior with leather-appointed sports bucket seats, while SR variants with Hyundai’s six-speed automatic transmission now come standard with steering wheel-mounted paddleshifts. Slotting in the Series II range mid-market the i30 2.0 SR petrol manual sells for $26,550 ($28,850 automatic) and the i30 2.0 SR Premium petrol manual for $31,250 ($33,550); plus on-road costs in both cases. The SR six-speed automatic was the test vehicle. Styling is straight off the Hyundai playlist with the i30 Series II featuring a deep front grille that closely aligns it with its upmarket, Fluidic Sculpture 2.0-designed Sonata and Genesis stablemates. Hyundai’s panoramic glass sunroof is now available as an option on i30 SR, remaining standard on the SR Premium. The i30 Series II SR range now features an upgraded sports interior, with black leather upholstery, red inserts on seat bolsters, and red stitching on the seats, steering wheel, and front door armrests. Front sports bucket seats with extended bolsters not only add to the visual impact, but also provide more lateral support for the driver and front passenger during enthusiastic driving. Dark grey-metallic interior trim highlights replace the previous silver trim highlights in all variants, and the headlining is now black (previously grey). A striking red push-button start surround

Hyundai i30 Series II 1.8 Active petrol $21,450 Hyundai i30 Series II 1.8 Active X petrol $22,590 Hyundai i30 Series II 2.0 SR petrol $26,550 Hyundai i30 Series II 2.0 SR Premium petrol $31,250 Hyundai i30 Series II 1.6 Active CRDi $24,050 Hyundai i30 Series II 1.6 Active X CRDi $25,190 Hyundai i30 Series II 1.6 Premium CRDi $35,190

trim replaces the previous silver trim surround. SR, SR Premium variants retain Hyundai’s 7.0inch touchscreen satellite-navigation system with CD-player. Hyundai i30 Series II’s petrol engine line-up is Euro 5 compliant. Both the 2.0 GDi (SR and SR Premium) petrol engines are available with either six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions. Electronic stability control, traction control, anti-lock braking, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, vehicle stability management, along with a full suite of airbags have earned the 130 Series II a five-star ANCAP safety rating Keyless entry and push-button engine start make for a welcome more normally found in vehicles of pedigree beyond the small passenger variety. The tried and tested free-revving 2.0-litre direct-injection petrol engine had the Series II SR in full flight on the open road with fuel consumption of 5.4 litres per 100 kilometres on a motorway run. Around town it gulped almost twice as much (9.4 litres). The sports seats look good and held occupants comfortably yet firmly during ride and handling expected of a vehicle whose suspension was given a thorough workout by Aussie engineers. A generous cargo area offers ample space for shopping or luggage and loading is made easy by a high-lift tailgate and low lip. The Hyundai i30 Series II continues to make its mark on the Australian small-car market, made even more appealing to European-style sporty hatchbacks. The next generation, just unveiled, appears set to continue the trend.

SPORT LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club has got it’s mojo back after a fantastic win against Casey-South Melbourne last weekend. Resuming at 0/85 in pursuit of 244, Aaron Finch was unavailable due to higher duties, a fact that might previously have proved disastrous. However, this young group is starting to build it’s own character, and so it proved as they simply got on with the job. Luke Inglis came up from the seconds and made a nice 41 to support opener Josh McDonald who got 43 of his own. Skipper Eamonn Vines got back to some of his best form with a typically patient 73. He found great support from Tyler Larkin, who had been failing to capitalise on good starts recently, the young middle order player enjoying one of his best days for the club, knocking up an excellent 99 before falling agonisingly short of what would have been a well deserved century. To cap off the day's play nicely, Brenton McDonald capped off his six wicket haul in the first innings, scoring 46 not out as the Cats finished on 5/397 to claim a dominant win. So after what can only be described as a hor-

rible start to the season, things look like they’re turning around, and a win this game against Ringwood would see the side on the outskirts of the top eight, and with aspirations of seeing how far they can push not only the competition, but themselves. In the Geelong Cricket Association, the match that looked like holding the most intrigue has turned into a white-wash, with Newtown & Chilwell destroying Lara to take first innings points after just one days play. Lara won the toss and elected to bat first on their home track, and despite losing two early wickets, had things back on even terms when they reached 2/45. But from there, everything went pear-shaped as Jordan Clark and Jackson Davis destroyed the middle and lower orders to see the Cats dismissed for a woeful 107 in just 41 overs. Clark continued his great form taking 5/34 while Davis chipped in with 3/15. With 40 overs still to play, Lara needed early wickets, but George Chisolm and Will Simson ensured there was no nervous moments, seeing off the new ball before flourishing late in the day. Chisolm raced to 88 not out, while Simson played the anchor role with 25 not out from 114 balls, as the Two Blues finished day one on 0/126. The only question remaining now is whether

or not Newtown & Chilwell can claim outright points, a feat that isn’t outside the realms of possibility. In Division 2, St Albans Breakwater aren’t without a chance to break their duck for the season, although they would prefer they hadn’t lost three late wickets to finish off a much improved first day performance. Bowling first, the Saints struck early through Sean Bogan and Jason Murray, before a series of Torquay partnerships saw them slowly build towards a decent total, eventually all out for 217 from 61 overs. For the Tigers, Sam Giblett was the star with a well-crafted 75, while Bogan with 3/55 and youngster Jonah Graham with 4/20 did the damage with the ball. There was 17 overs to be played to complete the days play, and both sides would have hoped for a positive result, but it was Torquay who gained the ascendency, taking three wickets to see the host fall to 3/22 at stumps, Clinton Place the key man with 2/10 from six overs. The first hour will be the key tomorrow. If St Albans Breakwater can survive that, their confidence will grow and they will be a chance, but if the Tigers can find a couple of early wickets, it will be a long way back.

HOT WHEELS: Cyclist Amanda Spratt with Tracey Gaudrey, Christine Couzens, John Eren, Cadel Evans and Natalie Saunders.

Elite women’s cycling live race to be a television first By Luke Voogt Geelong’s premier women’s cycling race will appear live on television for the first time next year. Victorian Minister for Tourism, John Eren, made the announcement on Tuesday, making Deakin University Elite Women’s Race the first women’s ride live on Australian TV since 2010. “This is another win for gender equality in sport,” Mr Eren said. “The star-studded line-up for the race is simply outstanding. We knew the Elite Women’s Race would attract some of the world’s best cyclists.“ Fourteen teams will compete in the race, in its second year on the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) calendar.

Cadel Evans – Australia’s only Tour de France winner – was thrilled the event had attracted some of the world’s top female teams and riders. “To have (the race) broadcast live places us on par with other big women’s races such as La Course,” Evans said at the announcement. “(I) can’t wait to watch the race.” Australia’s own UCI Women’s Team, ORICA-AIS, will return with defending champion, Amanda Spratt set to defend her 2016 title. “It’s great to see so many strong teams confirmed for 2017,” Spratt said. “This will definitely lift the standard of racing but we’ll be working hard to continue our winning streak. The race itself is one of the best organised in the world.

“The atmosphere coming up the straight being cheered on by an energetic Aussie crowd is amazing.” Starting at the Geelong Waterfront at 11.45am, the 113km Deakin University Elite Women’s Race follows the majority of the men’s course. It will travel through Cadel Evans’s home town Barwon Heads, Torquay and along Great Ocean Road, before heading back to the Geelong finish line. The ride is part of the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, which also features a 65km and 111km course where participants can ride with Evans. Channel Seven will broadcast the race live on 28 January.

Anglers in for a mixed bag ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Clifton Springs was busy over the past week, with anglers boating whiting, squid, flathead, gummy shark and, of course snapper. Whiting schooled in large numbers over the Curlewis Bank just out from Hermlesy Road, some nudging 40cm. The nearby weed beds provided fresh squid for bait for anglers using 2.5-sized jigs. Gummies were often a by-catch for snapper anglers such as Danny Sparks and Kevin Hunter. Danny was fishing a squid strip out wide off Point Richards on Sunday only to catch a gummy shark of 7.45kg. Snapper anglers were successful around Wilson Spit area and toward Alcoa Pier. Swan Bay’s main channel continued fishing well for impressive sized salmon on bait and lure. The incoming tide was best for keeping lures free of weed. Queenscliff is a hot spot for big squid, with the grass beds to the east of the harbour holding good numbers. Point Lonsdale Bight produced whiting and respectable-sized pinkie snapper. James Gillians casting 3.5-inch Z-Man grubs in Queenscliff Harbour for a baglimit capture of salmon to 35cm. Tackleworld Geelong’s Michael Moore enjoyed some land-based squid action at Queenscliff during the week, noting that casting right out was essential to success. The Barwon River estuary fished well for King George whiting from the entrance through to the Barwon Head’s boat ramp. Anglers with live bass yabbies also banked bream. Surf beaches still had plenty of salmon available for lure anglers on the run-in tides. Fish of 2kg were reported, although they were finicky at times. Adam Van Der Lugt and I ventured over to Mallacoota for dusky flathead. We caught one of 67cm on a Z-Man Trick Swim in the top lake, with numerous bream to just over 40cm as a by-catch. Tony Hynds and Robert Nguyen travelled up to Lake Eildon. Robert landed a 5.7kg yellow belly on a grey and black vibe lure, one of eight big yellows taken for the trip. The Barwon River was a hot spot for carp, which, while not the most glamorous fish, certainly put up an outstanding fight. Over the next week, Clifton Springs will be hard option to pass up, with a mixed bag on offer.
