Young Rays snapped up in the AFL draft
■ Salesman claimed this was self-defence…
Justice denied It just doesn’t seem right, said bashed Endeavour Hills 73-year-old grandfather Robert Ikin. On 15 November police dropped charges against a much younger man who Mr Ikin said repeatedly punched him in the face outside his home and walked away. The bloodied and bruised Mr Ikin was hospitalised that night of 17 August. “(The accused) claimed that every time I got up, he felt I was going to attack him,” Mr Ikin said. “He told police I was hanging on to his clothes, and I was sitting on his laptop (sic).” “If he calls it self-defence, how come I’ve got all the damage?” According to Mr Ikin’s statement to police, he had earlier ordered a then-19-year-old electricity salesman to get off his front step and off his property. The dispute escalated after the man later returned to the nature strip and called out to Mr Ikin. Mr Ikin walked out and told the man he’d ring the police. “Why? Do you want to make something of it?” the salesman allegedly said. Mr Ikin said that he approached the man and was struck twice in the face. He fell and hit the back of his head on the nature strip. When he got up, he was hit twice more and fell back on his head again, he said. Mr Ikin walked towards the man’s tablet computer on the ground, saying he was going to find out who the man worked for. “I think that cost me another hit,” Mr Ikin said. “He has hit me a couple more times and I’ve gone back down again and I hit my head once again.” The only known witnesses to the assault were Mr Ikin and the salesman.
Mr Ikin’s wife, Jeanette, who was upstairs watching TV at the time, was thankful that Mr Ikin, who had recently had a heart bypass, didn’t have a heart attack. “How can a 19-year-old boy think an old man like this can possibly hurt him and feel threatened?” Mr Ikin isn’t sure if he’ll now receive victimsof-crime compensation that will fund home security measures and his ongoing counselling and physiotherapy. Treating psychologist Joseph Poznanski said Mr Ikin has since been blighted by chronic posttraumatic stress, insomnia, flashbacks and agitation. Once a keen morning walker, Mr Ikin now shuns public places and feels unsafe in his home, Dr Poznanski said. “Justice needs to be achieved in order to feel healed.” In August, in a wave of publicity, police called for information about the incident and the accused, an electricity door-to-door salesman, who police said was accused of repeatedly punching Mr Ikin in the face outside his home before he fled. A police officer told media at the time that it was “outrageous” how the incident had escalated. In a statement on Wednesday 23 November, Victoria Police stated there was insufficient evidence to proceed with the charges. The youth is believed to have been set to plead not guilty on the grounds of self-defence. Victims of Crime advocate Noel McNamara said the dropping of the charges was “unbelievable”. Mr McNamara said it reminded him of men using defensive homicide to mitigate them killing their wives. “I haven’t heard self-defence being used in this way,” he said.

‘Catastrophe’ on the road to ruin By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Mayor Sam Aziz has said it is time for the State Government to take heed of a looming “catastrophe” after residents nominated traffic and public transport inertia as their pet hate in Casey council’s latest survey. In the November Casey NEXT report, 32 per cent of surveyed residents nominated the issue as their top area for improvement. Community safety was the second most popular concern at 15 per cent. Cr Aziz said the result was unsurprising given the sluggish travel times for people going to work, dropping off kids and even doing their Saturday shopping. The State Government recently allocated a “completely disproportionate” $1.8 billion for arterial roads - all in Melbourne’s western suburbs, despite the south-east’s infrastructure gap, he said.
The council claims there is a $1 billion backlog in arterial road projects in Casey. “We are growing faster than the west. Looking at that alone, we should be getting 1.5 times the funds,” Cr Aziz said. “The Government take for granted that they hold three seats in the south-east and those seats haven’t changed in recent elections. “It’s a shame the confidence of the voters hasn’t been looked after with this particular funding.” The situation was headed for a “catastrophe” which would be made worse by rate-capping. Cr Aziz said a new round of advocacy early in 2017 would make it “imperative for Casey and Cardinia to be looked after”. “People need to start paying attention so that the government receives the message loud and clear and won’t tolerate being neglected.” The council’s long wish-list includes an extension of Cranbourne railway line, upgrading Narre Warren railway station, extending O’Shea Road
to the Beaconsfield interchange and duplicating Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road from Thompsons Road to South Gippsland Highway. It is also lobbying for a $140 million extension of Thompsons Road into the Cardinia Employment precinct - which would ease the congestion of city-bound workers on the Monash Freeway. Readers told Star News of traffic jams at Thompsons Road-Western Port Highway roundabout, Clyde Road-Greaves Road intersection and Soldiers Road. Clyde Road and the Monash Freeway were popular frustrations. Recently, the State Government began work on widening the Monash Freeway between Clyde Road and EastLink and announced an upgrade of Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road and a fully funded duplication of Thompsons Road and the removal of Merinda Park level crossing. The skyrail and Metro Rail Tunnel projects are said to create capacity for more frequent rail
services on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines. Roads Minister and Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said further road upgrades in the south-east were being considered. “Since coming to government, we haven’t wasted a minute in delivering projects the southeast desperately needs to cut travel times, reduce traffic and improve safety for local residents. “Ryan Smith and his previous Liberal Government colleagues sat on their hands for four years as our roads grew busier and more congested,” he said. Opposition roads spokesman Ryan Smith had criticised Mr Donnellan over the western suburbs roads announcement. “Commuters in the south-east have a daily battle on the Monash Freeway as growth continues to soar in Casey and Cardinia. “If Luke Donnellan lived in his electorate he might understand the congestion his constituents face.”

Projects get cash boost, and onto the front burner By Cam Lucadou-Wells Autumn Place Family and Community Centre, once on the backburner, is back on track after a $3.6 million grant from the State Government. The centre, when built, will be a one-stop shop of a kindergarten, maternal and child health services, community spaces, kitchen, courtyard and outdoor park. The State Government also announced $2.3 million towards a district-level AFL and cricket oval and pavilion at The Hunt Club in Cranbourne East. Both projects had been shelved by Casey Council after its application for a variation to rate capping was knocked back by the Essential Services Commission this year. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said the state funding “validates” the council’s application for a rate-cap variation. “As the application was rejected by the State
Government the projects could not be funded. “While the funding announcement is welcomed, such funding will not bridge the cumulative effect of rate capping in future years, and many future projects are still at risk. “This funding is a start to addressing our infrastructure backlog and, hopefully, is the beginning of further significant investment into the Casey area, particularly into our road and transport network.” The Autumn Place centre will be jointly funded by Casey council, which contributes $1.075 million. Casey council will also provide $50,000 with $2 million from developer contributions to the Hunt Club project. Sean Balfour, chairman of the Doveton Eumemmerring Township Association, said the Autumn Place centre would replace “ageing” and “disjointed” infrastructure. Currently the library and community spaces in
the place are separated by car parks. “There’s a younger population and a different population moving in,” Mr Balfour said. “A centralised community space will help us greatly.” Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams, who was at the funding announcement on 21 November, said the Growing Suburbs Fund grant showed the Government was “putting people first”. Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins said: “The Liberals ignored their needs for four years.” “In contrast, we’re supporting these growing communities (in outer suburbs) with parks, playgrounds, sporting facilities and community centres.” In 2015, Casey received more than $5 million from the Growing Suburbs Fund for three projects - the Bridgewater Family Community Centre redevelopment, the Casey Cycling Precinct and the Selandra Integrated Community Centre.
Thunderstorm asthma caused emergency patient numbers to double at Dandenong Hospital and landed three people in intensive care. Demand peaked between 6pm on Monday 21 November and 6am on Tuesday 22 November, as it did at hospitals across Melbourne. Included in those who presented to the Dandenong Hospital Emergency Room were three patents who remain in the intensive care unit with serious respiratory conditions caused by the freak weather event. Monash Health head of allergy, Dr Sarah Barnes, said the thunderstorm asthma phenomenon occurred about once every five years. “It’s a phenomenon whereby grass pollens release a number of their allergic particles in the rain or the humidity, which are then able to get into the lungs,” she said. “Generally speaking, most of people affected by thunderstorm asthma have a history of hay fever, but many have not necessarily experienced asthma.” A Monash Health spokeswoman said that 179 patients presented to the Dandenong Hospital emergency department during the 12- hour period, with 148 patients presenting to the Casey Hospital. More than half presented due to thunderstorm asthma and respiratory problems. In a similar weeknight timeframe, she said, the figures would be 95 patients at Dandenong and 78 at Casey. Ambulance Victoria emergency operations executive director Mick Stephenson said “we essentially had a day’s workload within five hours”. “In the 15 minutes from 7pm when we would expect about 30 triple-zero calls for ambulance, there were 200 calls - that’s a call every 4.5 seconds,” he said.

100 years ago 30 November 1916 An improvement In front of the railway station at Dandenong, the department have just erected a length of railing to attach horses to. This will greatly be appreciated by all who require it, and will now save them having to ask people to hold their horses whilst transacting business at the station.
50 years ago 24 November 1966 ‘Go home and write to the papers’ The mother of a secondary school student who this week complained about lack of discipline and order at the school was advised: “Go home and write to the papers.” This was no defiant reply to her complaints. It was a plea by the principal for support to the teachers’ campaign for high-
er standards of tuition, higher qualification for teachers, better discipline and adequate pay. One reason for the parental complaint came from her son, who told his mother on reaching home that his day had been wasted. “The kids have been playing up all day,” he said. Mother found that in her son’s form, the teacher was giving a roundup of what might be expected in the examination papers. Pupils who wanted to have his advice were prevented from doing so by the continual clamour at the back. This mother contacted the Journal and repeated what she had been told. Many teachers are not qualified to control children nor pass on knowledge. The outlook for next year is that more unqualified teachers will have to be engaged, lacking in methods, lacking in training. The secretary of the Victorian Secondary Teachers Association, Mr Brian Conway, told
the Journal that another difficulty involved with temporary teachers was that some of them, since the introduction of new award inducements, were now able to be paid more than a trained teacher. In some cases a temporary teacher was paid in excess of $4000 a year.

Steam monsters rolled into town The Gippsland railway line was completed early in 1879 and was a changing station for the South Gippsland line and at this time all trains were pulled by large steam locomotives. The first primary school, erected in 1874 on the corner of Robinson Street, was directly opposite the Dandenong railway station and was relocated because children would run across from the school to the station to watch the arrival of the steam trains. BACK JACK JOHNSON opened in 1881 in Foster Street on the New Street corner replaced the former school. As youngsters we also loved to walk down to the railway station and stand on the old wooden bridge and watch the plush-carriaged Gippslander train steam beneath our feet. That bridge spanned the rail lines and gave access from platform one to the second and third platforms and the goods sheds.
Before the subway was built we watched those huge steam engines when they were being serviced on the large turntable that sat behind and below a low picket fence just down the footpath from one of our favourite lolly shops on the Foster Street corner next to the two-storey private boarding house, Dandenong House. A row of tall cypress trees ran behind Dandenong House to the top side of the turntable. This turntable was huge and operated by hand. As well as being used to service the engines it was also used to turn the engines around for the return trip to Melbourne and to access the engine sheds that were over towards the back of Godfrey’s paddock adjoining the railway line. She said he always kept bags of humbug lollies in a glove-box type compartment in the engine. When they lived at Ormond Street, Kensington, he drove the Geelong Flyer. It was then one of the fastest steam trains in Victoria. The railway land where the turntable was became the site of the Southern Aurora Hotel. The hotel has now gone and the land has been asphalted to provide better traffic access to the new two-storey steel and glass railway station with lifts and an overhead bridge. The drive-in bottle shop belonging to the hotel still exists in Foster Street and is mentioned in heritage listings.

‘No terror attacks here’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells An Islamic group’s south-east based leader has claimed “no terror attacks have occurred in Australia” in the wake of a man recently allegedly setting alight a Springvale bank in front of terrified staff and customers. Kuranda Seyit, executive director of Forum on Australia’s Islamic Relations (FAIR), also labelled two high-profile examples of plotted attacks on police in the area as “misguided youth” rather than terrorists under the conventional definition. Notable examples are Numan Haider - who allegedly attacked police with a knife and was shot in Endeavour Hills in 2014 - and the alleged plotters of a thwarted attack on an Anzac Day service in Dandenong in 2015. “They were criminal acts, violent in a way, planned to a certain degree, but carried out by young people who had no idea what they were doing. “They didn’t have a political agenda. One was mentally unstable and the other was manipulated by older people.” Mr Seyit said the latter youths - including Sevdet Besim of Hallam who pleaded guilty to plotting an act of terrorism - were “silly and naive”, though arguably “radicalised”. “Someone put some ideas in their head. They have said that they totally regret doing something silly and they’ve paid a heavy price for that. “They were only kids.” The 18-year-old Haider was afflicted with serious emotional issues, home pressures and the close gaze of counter-terrorist police, Mr Seyit said. “The (ongoing coronial) inquest shows the actions of police aggravated the situation.” In a statement, Mr Seyit said the traditional definition of terrorism was a violent criminal act carried out by a group to invoke fear. It had morphed in the public’s thinking to any violent acts carried out by a Muslim in public to instill fear. “The problem is that even if a Muslim sneezes in the wrong direction it can be made to look like an act of terror.”
Man’s threats to kill parents By Cam Lucadou-Wells
The Numan Haider incident at Endeavour Hills police station was not a terrorist act, a Muslim leader says 127959 Picture: GARY SISSONS Under the conventional definition, there had been no terrorist attacks in Australia, Mr Seyit said. “While we believe that terrorist organisations like Al-Qaeda and IS do have some influence in Australia, there are no known cells or operatives in Australia. “There is no evidence to support a presence of Al-Qaeda or IS in Australia.” He made the comments out of concern that some media coverage of the Springvale fire on 18 September focused on the alleged perpetrator’s Muslim faith. Twenty-seven people were injured in the blaze,

some critically - including the man allegedly responsible for it. “These crimes are nothing new - like the Port Arthur massacre. They’re usually people with a mental disability or mental health issue who take a different pathway.” Mr Seyit said there needed to be a public debate on terrorism, and a re-think on the approach towards “random acts of violence“ by individuals, whether Muslim or not. “It is time that we take a responsible approach to the issue and reduce the risk of feeding into the right-wing and racist elements in society, which has seen a sudden increase in supporters in the past two years in Australia.“
An Endeavour Hills man has pleaded guilty to threatening to strangle his mother and shoot and punch his father. The 34-year-old man had entered the parents’ home in breach of an intervention order before unleashing his threats, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard on 21 November. The man threatened to strangle his mother with his bare hands and with her headscarf if she didn’t provide him with cash He grabbed his father’s wrist and told him that he would shoot the parents. The accused told his father he could kill him with one punch. His parents fled their home in fear, police alleged. The accused had been convicted at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court in September 2015 for assault, threats to kill and recklessly causing injury to his parents. A defence lawyer told the court that a CREDIT bail program or similar supports would be beneficial for the accused, whose behaviour was exacerbated by drug use. A recent CREDIT bail report suggested the man may have an undiagnosed intellectual disability, the lawyer said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said he would defer sentence and put the accused on a justice plan to allow him to engage in drug and other treatments. A two-year full intervention order was issued to protect the accused’s father and a limited-contact order to protect the mother. The man was put on CREDIT bail to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 21 December.

17-year-old girl mercilessly hit By Cam Lucadou-Wells An 18-year-old man's sentence has been deferred after pleading guilty to punching, strangling and hitting a school girl to the head with a hammer while she was trapped in his Hampton Park family's backyard shed. The man, who had spent most of the previous 49 days in adult custody, was freed on bail by Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 21 November - partly to treat his anger issues. The man had claimed he had blacked out through anger during the assault. One of the victim's dozen supporters directed retributive words to the man's family and friends who waited several minutes later before leaving the courtroom. The 17-year-old victim, who watched on from the gallery, called out during the deferral of sentence: "Because he's allowed to be angry." In a previous hearing, she'd stated the accused had taken everything from her; had made her feel worthless, unable to sleep and afraid to love again. The man had pleaded guilty to intentionally and recklessly causing injury as well as false imprisonment of the victim on 2 and 3 October. During the incident, he struck her to the head three times with a hammer. He told her if she called police, he'll kill her or himself. Angered by a video found on the girl's phone, the man choked her twice until she was unconscious. He later told police that he had got so angry that he had blacked out himself. He had choked her to scare her and stop her yelling, he allegedly told police. As he held a sharp tool near her eye, he told her again that he would kill her. The ordeal ended when his mother rang the
victim's family. The man's lawyer told the court that the accused's anger issues needed to be addressed. What was of most concern is there is no real indicator that drugs and alcohol are over-riding drivers of his behaviour. The court had been told in a previous hearing that the man was not violent with his relatives at home and had no criminal history. He had been recently sent away by his mother to a Brisbane relative and headspace mental health agency to solve his anger problems. His family were determined to ensure the man didn't reconcile with the victim, the lawyer said. A psychiatric report concluded there was no psychiatric illness but references to the man's immaturity, to the anger and the jealousy towards the complainant, the lawyer said. It suggested alcohol issues needed to be addressed but poly-substance abuse didn't seem to impact the man's behaviour. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the deferred sentence gave him the chance to see if the man could comply with bail and Youth Justice directions. He warned that an adult custodial sentence could be still on the cards. "The whole focus on this is for you to get treatment and that this doesn't happen again. "You have got to engage in your rehabilitation. These problems will only manifest and get worse if you don't," Mr Vandersteen said. The man was bailed on a night curfew and that he didn't take drugs or alcohol and complied with a Youth Justice program. He is also subject to a full and indefinite intervention order protecting the victim. He is set to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court for sentencing on 13 December.

Multi-faith gets wise to Christmas By Cam Lucadou-Wells The Christmas story has value to all faiths, says an organiser of a multi-faith backed nativity event in Berwick. The 3 December event features a one-act play The Other Wise Man, a nativity tableau by children, Christmas carols and charity group stalls. It is organised by a regional branch of the Sathya Sai International Organisation - which follows the teachings of guru Sai Baba - and supported by Casey Multi-Faith Network. Organiser Gary Torpy says the event aims to deliver a message of the “true joy” of Christmas the values of oneness and compassion. “People can relate to those values. You don’t have to come from a particular belief or faith
to do that. “That we need each other and reach out with compassion to others in need. “That we are one humanity and one people.” Mr Torpy said the Christmas story - the birth of Jesus - had a deeper joy, aside from the “fun and frivolity” of the season. The Other Wise Man is based on a story by Arthur Van Dyke about a fourth wise man who is side-tracked helping two people in distress and misses the Bethlehem birth of Christ. It demonstrates the parable of ‘what you do for the least of our brothers you do it for (God)’, Mr Torpy says. The event is at Nossal High School auditorium, 100 Clyde Road, Berwick on 3 December, 5-8pm. Free admission.

Hall hits 125 years Through 125 years, the Narre Warren Mechanics Institute Hall has stood strong. In a grand dress-up celebration on 20 November, families of the district’s pioneers and history buffs once again trod the hall’s boards. The event included a fashion parade of 1900’s period costumes, the cutting of a celebration cake and festooning of red, white and blue ribbons. Hall historian, Judy Owen, spoke in depth about the European settlers in Narre Warren such as Sidney John Webb who donated land for Narre Warren Railway Station School and the site of the mechanics hall. She described Mr Webb as an inno-
vator of farming methods in the district. There are seven oak trees, planted at the time of the hall’s opening, that still stand next to the hall. They were linked to the avenue of trees still growing on the north side of Princes Highway, Ms Owen said. The trees on the southern side had been removed for road widening. The 70-strong crowd at the celebration included third generation descendants of the Webb family, as well as other early settler families. Members of the National Trust, Narre Warren & District Family History Group, Berwick Mechanics Institute, Berwick Pakenham Historical Society and other history groups also attended.

NEW HOMES & LAND
Representatives of community and sporting groups received $1000 and $10,000 donations from Brown Property Group at Saturday's Highgrove family day.
GIVING A SENSE OF COMMUNITY
“At this time of year we run a back to school support fund. It’s a hidden issue, but there are lots of families in our area who struggle with the costs of education. “This money will assist with items like uniforms, text books, fees even right down to basics like backpacks, lunchboxes, shoes and even undies if they’re needed.” Casey Cardinia Foundation executive officer Therese Howell was similarly grateful for her organisation’s $10,000 donation. “It’s a great initiative by Brown Property Group to be thinking philanthropically about the region and giving back into the region that they are gaining from,” she said. Other clubs to receive a donation were Berwick Netball Club, Narre Warren Football Club, Skye United Soccer Club, Heinz South Dandenong Cricket Club, Narre South Cricket Club and Casey
Comets Football Club. Marketing manager Graham Nolan said the family day was a way for Brown Property Group to showcase the community to potential new residents while also rewarding those who had already decided to call it home. The day also was a great was to showcase the new display village. “Some of our builders have been open for a while, but today is the first day we’ve had all our builders open,” Mr Nolan explained. “We also have a number of residents now in Highgrove, the community is growing, so we wanted to put a day on for them with lots of fun family entertainment and free food. We want to get them to meet each other and enjoy a fun day out.” Among those at the open day were Kath and Greg Neilson, who are building their new home with Romeo Homes.
The couple said they wanted to show their support for Romeo Homes, one of the builders on show in the new display village. “We liked Romeo’s flexibility, their design,” Kath said. “We like heritage but the space and functionality of the modern. They have allowed us to combine both.” Mr Nolan said when finished, Highgrove would be home to over 950 households. He said buyers were being drawn to Highgrove by its extensive network of parks and open space and the quiet ambience of the community. COMMUNITY groups and sporting clubs gratefully collected cheques worth tens of thousands of dollars at the Highgrove family day on Saturday 19 November, thanks to a unique three-way partnership. Hundreds of people flocked to the Clyde North community drawn by the brilliant sunshine, free food, kids activities and the chance to meet players from the Carlton Football Club. The family day also marked the opening of the Highgrove display village, which has 27 stunning homes by 12 of Melbourne’s best builders. On hand to present the cheques was Brown Property Group director and former Carlton player Fraser Brown. The donations were a result of a fundraising collaboration between Highgrove, Orbit Homes and the Carlton Football Club. The trio built and sold a house within the Highgrove community, with some of the proceeds of the sale going to some local community groups. Renee Purton from the Berwick Springs Junior Football Club welcomed the $1000 donation to her club. “Any donation we get to the club is wonderful. Brown Property Group have made a very generous donation. It’s going to help with new sports equipment and with our facilities. We are a nonprofit organisation so we do rely on the generosity of the community. This is just fantastic.” Cranbourne Information and Support Service CEO Leanne Petrides said the group's $10,000 donation would help get local children get ready for school. “The Information and Support Service will use the money for our education assistance program,” Ms Petrides said.

Gleneagles Secondary College students’ latest soaring achievements could be said to be all in the mind. First, there’s Canis Nugroho who has been selected in University of Melbourne’s young scholars program. The Year 10 student has the chance to meet 699 like-minded chosen peers with leadership qualities and academic smarts during the program - named after the university’s former ViceChancellor Professor Kwong Lee Dow. Canis is no stranger to success. He was one of 10 students to win a place on a recent student tour to Vietnam to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. Media student Sarah Said’s sassy three-minute film Internal Monologue has been shortlisted for Top Screen 2017. Beautifully shot and full of wry humour and dry observations, the film features an opening quote from Frida Kahlo: “I am my own muse. I am the subject I know best. The subject I want to know better.” In the self-written, directed, edited and performed film, Sarah chats to her slightly older self and finds out the “heartbreaking” news that there will be no more Instagram in 2019 - and realises she has a big forehead. Year 12 art students Naomi Blakeley and Jimmy Nguyen, meanwhile, have been shortlisted for Top Arts 2017. Naomi’s translucently turquoise work Gibigianna - The Play of Light is product of more than 50 individual resin forms. The would-be interior designer experimented meticulously before mass-producing the works. Jimmy’s illustration The Galactic Adventures of Spaceman is an intensely rendered maze of lines made with black fineliners. It took many hours of detailed work, the promising illustrator said. Both artworks face a final selection process for the Top Arts exhibition at Federation Square next year.

Bombardier is next stop for the visitors More than 800 people took a look at what’s being made in Dandenong and raised cash for charity. Bombardier Transportation hosted an open day for staff and families, suppliers, customers and industry partners on Sunday 20 November. Jumping castles, mini Jeeps, train rides, face painting, a balloon artist and an animal petting zoo kept kids entertained. There were food stalls and trucks, Melbourne SKA band Shanty Town, tours of a new VLocity train and the space where it’s made, and 85 per cent of the suppliers used for the open day were from Melbourne’s south-east. A raffle raised $1150 for the TrackSafe Foundation which was established by the Australian rail industry to reduce near collisions, injuries and fatalities on the rail network resulting from suicide and reckless behaviour. Bombardier Transportation Australia managing director Andrew Dudgeon told staff it was “important for your sons, daughters, wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, all of your loved ones, to get to see where you come to work every day and what you do, to see how we build the
Ella Doerfuss in the driver's seat of a Bombardier-built train. trains and trams that make up a vital part services our state needs and deserves.” Bombardier Transportation has been of Victorian, and Australian, infrastrucin Dandenong for more than 60 years ture”. “This open day has been a way for and from that site designed, engineered, us to thank our customers and industry built and delivered more than 2000 train partners who have worked with us over and tram carriages. The company has more than 700 many years to deliver some of Victoria’s most reliable and iconic trains and trams employees across Victoria, and 1000 across Australia, which produce trains into passenger service,” he said. “With their support we look forward and trams from design and engineering to strengthening our ongoing partner- through to testing, delivery, maintenance ships and delivering the products and and signalling.
Waves of asbestos roll in Although the use of all forms of asbestos has been banned in Australia since 2003, the risk of exposure continues to raise its head. “Most Australians have been exposed to asbestos at some stage in their life,” said Seamus Herrick, a lawyer at Adviceline Injury Lawyers. “It is really important that people understand the risks associated with exposure. “The most devastating consequence of asbestos exposure is the development of mesothelioma, an aggressive form of cancer that almost always results in a terminal diagnosis,” Mr Herrick said. “Sadly, the average survival time after diagnosis is between 10 and 12 months.” However, not all exposure to asbestos results in an asbestos-related injury or illness. It depends on the frequency and intensity of exposure to asbestos dust and fibres. Importantly, it can take between 10 to 40 years or more before an injury or illness is diagnosed. People seeking legal advice following diagnosis of an asbestosrelated disease will most likely fall within one of three broad categories, called “waves”. Those who worked with the big asbestos manufacturers like James Hardie and others were among the first sufferers of asbestos diseases
and are called the “first wave”. Next, tradesmen and workers who used the products were the “second wave”. This includes partners that came into contact with asbestos domestically, such as when washing work clothes. In recent times, the focus has been on the “third wave” - home renovators who are uncovering asbestos used in homes built between the 1950s and 1970s. “DIY television has prompted many to do renovation work themselves in an effort to save time and costs associated with professionals,” Mr Herrick said. “However, spending the extra money to have asbestos sheeting removed professionally reduces the risk of exposure to this deadly dust.” But now a number of news stories have created concern about a “fourth wave” of potential sufferers those who are exposed to new products coming into Australia without knowing they contain asbestos. “At Adviceline, we have a dedicated team handling our asbestos matters to ensure our clients receive the highest standard of support and advice,” Mr Herrick said. Adviceline acts in asbestos disease cases on a no-win, no-fee basis. It is important that anyone who has been exposed to asbestos gets early advice.

Wave of asbestos exposure still rolling through our communities Although the use of all forms of asbestos has been banned in Australia since 2003, the risk of exposure continues to raise its head. “Sadly, the average survival time after diagnosis is between 10 and 12 months.” However, not all exposure to asbestos results

sufferers - those who are exposed to new products coming into Australia without knowing they contain asbestos. “At Adviceline, we have a dedicated team handling our asbestos matters to ensure our clients receive the highest standard of support and advice throughout the process,” Mr Herrick said. “We acknowledge litigation is inherently stressful so we make ourselves readily accessible to put our clients at ease when questions arise.” Adviceline acts in asbestos disease cases on a no-win, no-fee basis. It is important that anyone who has been exposed to asbestos gets early advice from their GP and a legal professional.

“However, spending the extra money to have asbestos sheeting removed professionally reduces the risk of exposure to this deadly dust.” But now a number of news stories have created concern about a “fourth wave” of potential
in an asbestos-related injury or illness. It depends on the frequency and intensity of exposure to asbestos dust and fibres. Importantly, it can take between 10 to 40 years or more before an injury or illness is diagnosed. People seeking legal advice following diagnosis of an asbestos-related disease will most likely fall within one of three broad categories, called “waves”. Those who worked with the big asbestos manufacturers like James Hardie and others were among the first sufferers of asbestos diseases and are called the “first wave”. Next, tradesmen and workers who used the products were the “second wave”.

SPORT Heat is on for Skipper on a run By Nicholas Creely With Dandenong starting the season like a house on fire, one man in particular continues to steer clear from the limelight but accumulate runs at a rapid rate. Panthers skipper Tom Donnell, 30, continues to be one of Premier Cricket’s most consistent and exciting batsmen and is now getting closer and closer to edging his way into the all-time run-scorers in the competition’s illustrious history. A lot of wonderful cricketers have graced the field in Victoria’s strongest club competition, but few have flown under the radar quite like Donnell. In terms of Dandenong, the skipper currently sits as the leading run-scorer in the club’s history, surpassing Tim Hooper’s record of 5580 in November 2015. But in the overall spectrum, Donnell is now one of only 100 CV Premier players of all time to surpass the 6000 runs mark. And he makes runs even at higher levels, having represented Victoria’s Second XI and performing consistently, and he also played the touring West Indian team last summer, making 34 at the top of the order. Some legends of club cricket, such as Warren Ayres, Darren Dempsey, David Robinson and Matt Chasemore have all played cricket with the Panthers, but Donnell’s loyalty to the club will see him go down as the greatest player to ever don the whites at Shepley. His statistics are mind-blowing - 6559 runs at an average of 35.45, a highest score of 139*, 10 centuries at First XI level - and all batting in the hardest position of them all, opening. With only a decade into his premier cricket career, the possibilities for further records to be broken are endless, but Donnell remains team orientated and focused on leading the Panthers to the
Panthers skipper Tom Donnell is leading his team into a new era. 148087 ultimate prize this season. “We are going well, but it’s only early on in the season, and it’s a long season, so we know we need to play our best each week to keep winning,” he said.
“The ladder is so tight and it’s so important we keep on winning and not drop off at all. “We will just keep trying to play good positive cricket.” But despite the mountains of runs made over
Basketball on stream as social media reaches out By Nicholas Creely It is truly becoming the generation of social media - and if the WNBL’s highly successful Facebook live steaming is anything to go by, there could be a new and exciting way to watch sports that previously have struggled to make it to television. In Sunday 20 November’s Melbourne derby between the Jayco Dandenong Rangers and Melbourne Boomers, a staggering 394,000 Facebook users were reached, making it the most watched video ever produced by the WNBL. Although the Rangers eventually got the chocolates 78-69, there was a significant amount of interest for both sides, not only at the game, but on social media. It has always been a highly intriguing rivalry between the two Melbourne-based franchises, but the problem of finding a way to reach the game to a wider audience has been a lingering issue for the league. It is anticipates that the number will continue to rise as replays of the games are made available on the WNBL’s Facebook page. The WNBL will also live stream other games this season in a bid to appeal to broadcasters. In conjunction with these promising statistics, the stream received more than 600 engagements, which includes comments and shares, with a total of 9300 total views and over 8200 unique views. Head of WNBL Sally Phillips was ecstatic at the numbers, indicating is a step forward for the competition in an overall sense. “These numbers are extremely positive for the WNBL moving forward as we aim to engage new corporate partners for the league,” Phillips said. “I want to thank Sportscast Australia for their help in setting up what was an excellent stream, Michele Timms and Steven King for their expert commentary and for all the WNBL fans that tuned in. “We will continue to work quickly and diligently in our goal to bring consistently produced live streams for the rest of the season, while not losing sight of the ultimate goal to return the WNBL to TV.” The Rangers currently sit second on the WNBL tables after an impressive first third of the season. 34 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 28 November, 2016

a long period of time, Donnell isn’t overly happy about his personal start to the season. “It’s been average really - I had one decent knock which was nice, but I need to get a little more consistent and help the team out a bit more,” he said. And what a knock it was. It was perhaps even a masterpiece from Donnell. The skipper destroyed Melbourne University in Round 3 of this season, blasting 114 off just 60 balls. Along the grape-vine of Premier Cricket’s avid followers, it has been remarked as a knock that defied belief and was almost too good to be true. In the days following the whirlwind knock, Donnell remarked that it was a “blur” and that he was just “happy the team got over the line”. But over the journey, Donnell has feasted on the bowlers. In fact, he hasn’t missed out on making a century in six years - highlighting his immense consistency at a high level. And despite shouldering a heavy load, as the Panthers have gone through a tough transitional phase and not making finals for three years, it seems the skipper is now reaping the benefits of his loyalty to the club. Throughout this testing period, Donnell has shone, leading the club’s run tally in three of the last six seasons. But now the Panthers are ready to repay the faith, and are setting themselves up for a tilt at the flag, and in the process, even more runs are coming for the modest left-hander. The club will also be running a past players and family fun day on Sunday 4 December. Those interested can contact Liz Williamson on 0409 184 277 or lizwilliamson@hotmail.com.

The battle begins for new saint By Nicholas Creely DANDENONG Stingray’s key-forward Josh Battle has been selected by the St Kilda Football Club with its second selection in Friday night’s AFL draft in Sydney. Battle, 18, is regarded as one of, if not the best, key forward in this year’s rich draft pool. The youngster, who models his game on Hawk’s superstar Jack Gunston, kicked the most goals of any division one player at the under-18 championships earlier this season, kicking 11 majors in just four games for Vic Country. Playing his junior football with Doveton, Battle also was prolific in front of goal at TAC Cup level, kicking 24.13 across eight games. His impressive season also saw him blitz the national combine, demonstrating elite endurance in the 3km time-trial and also in the Beep Test. Initially, Battle was told by AFL recruiters that he wasn’t fit enough or versatile enough to play at the elite level, but went away for the 2016 pre-season with a renewed mindset to work on the areas that hindered him. In what was probably quite a surprise, Battle slipped all the way to pick 39, despite being touted to go in the late teens. The Saints are well renowned for being a successful breeding ground for Dandenong Stingrays youngsters, after last year drafting in Brandon White and Bailey Rice. Also, due to Mitch McCarthy being overlooked in the draft, he is a strong chance to end up at the Saints as a category B rookie. Saints recruiting manager Tony Elshaug told the club’s website that Battle would take time to cement his place in the saint’s line-up, but believes he was too good to pass up. “You don’t want to put a ceiling on them but clearly he’s 18 and Paddy McCartin is 20, Tim Membrey’s 22 and Josh Bruce is 24, so we think we’ve got a good mix there,” Elsahug said. “Over a period of time, they’re not all going to play every week for obvious reasons - it’s a pretty

Runs are very hard to come by By Nicholas Creely DDCA ROUND 5 - DAY ONE REVIEW WITH a top-four spot on the line, it was inevitable that runs would be hard to come by - and Hallam-Kalora Park’s (8/176) first day grind may prove crucial. In what was an overcast afternoon, with just a hint of wind, it was the kind of day tailor made for a swing bowler. After the Cobras won the toss at home and elected to bowl, they got off to the perfect start, snaring the crucial scalp of dangerous Hawks opener Leigh Booth (8). But vital and long stretched partnerships between Ben Hillard (46), Jagveer Hayer (24) and Corey Booth (49no) helped lift the score to a decent platform of 4/128. The Cobras then ran through the Hawks, bowling with immense pressure and accuracy, to bog down a strong Hawks batting line-up. Their bowling is starting to become a force to be reckoned with, and the impressive display against a competition favorite is sure to lift the confidence of the group. Booth was particularly impressive, and despite some shaky moments throughout his knock, guided the Hawks through the tail to reach a respectable and easily defendable total. Cobras champion Michael Davies (3/44 off 23 overs) was simply outstanding, causing headaches all day for the Hawks batsman. What was even more impressive was his ability to apply pressure with constant dot balls. He was ably backed up fellow seamer Chadwick Van Estrop (1/31), who is starting to get going after a slow start to the season, Kaushalya Weeraratne (2/47), who is a constant threat, and Shehan Bandaranayake (2/22), who removed the dangerous late-order duo of Steve Gilmour (1) and Ryan Hillard (10). In what was a tense battle, the Cobras complied an impressive 25 maiden overs, highlighting just how disciplined and difficult scoring was.

But next week provides another challenge for both teams. The Hawks are an ominous bowling group, led by skipper Steve Gilmour and young star Jordan Hammond, while the Cobras have plenty of firepower with the bat. If runs are this hard to come by next week, the game will come down to the wire, in what is perhaps an entre to an even bigger spectacle in this year’s final series.

THE Jayco Dandenong Rangers now have the competition chasing their tail, rising to the top of the ladder, after knocking off the still winless Adelaide Lightning at Dandenong Stadium on Saturday night. It was destined to be a tricky challenge for the Rangers, as history suggests that in sport, the lower ranked sides can be the most difficult to knock off at the best of times. After a slow start in front of a packed crowd of green, the Rangers eventually got the game going, after having a slight deficit at quarter-time. The Lightning came out like a team desperate to get their first points of the year, and were in a good position, leading the game 14-16 at one point, before the Rangers began to bring their stylish play to the court, and wrestled back control by half-time. Despite the Rangers eventual victory, it was a spirited display from the Lightning, who are itching closer to their first victory.
Lauren Scherf was immense for the Rangers. 162370 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Lauren Scherf was immense, scoring a game high 21-points, 12 rebounds and an assist, and was duly awarded the game’s MVP. Sara Blicavs continued her consistent 2016/17 campaign, and was particularly instrumental on the boards with a whopping 16 rebounds. In what was another important result in the
overall outlook of the WNBL ladder, it was also co-captain Aimee Clydesdale and rising star Rosie Fadljevic’s 100th game. Fadljevic was just happy to get the win, but conceded she didn’t know of the milestone until minutes before the game. “I was honestly really shocked, and I think Aimee was as well, and when they started the announcements we didn’t think it was us,” she said. “But it was good to get the win, but it was just really ugly - but I think that puts us to the top.” The Rangers face off with the Sydney Uni Flames on Saturday 3 December at Dandenong Stadium, tip-off 6.30pm.
