Christmas cheer here BARRY Plant Emerald has once again teamed up with local community groups to help families in need at Christmas. The drive seems to get more successful each and every year, allowing the event’s co-ordinators to spread the cheer a little further. St Mark’s and St Luke’s churches do a fantastic job, packing the collected food into hampers. As always, the wonderful community comes together to help, with donations from all of the local supermarkets, including Cockatoo IGA, which allows organisers to
have a collection point at the front of the supermarket. Last year, the food drive managed to collect enough food to make up and deliver 61 hampers full of goodies to local families, just in time to make their Christmas a little brighter. This year, they’re hoping to make it even bigger. With your help, they can make that happen! If you have any non-perishable food items, please drop them into Barry Plant Emerald before Tuesday, 13 December.
THE Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service (DRERS) is again holding its annual Christmas Appeal. At the large Christmas tree at Belgrave Library, people can take a tag from the tree and leave an ‘unwrapped’ gift for anyone aged between newborn and 18 years. The concept is well-established in the region and has helped spread Christmas cheer to many children over the past 15 years. DRERS Manager Tania Bevan said it was a simple yet highly effective way to help the community in what could be a stressful time. “It helps put a big smile on the faces of many children in our community,” she said. “Each year, we seek support from the community to help us to make the event a success, and to help those in need at Christmas. “We’d like to thank those who have donated previously and this year.” Ms Bevan said DRERS liked to aim for an equal spread of gifts among the age groups. “Sometimes it’s a little easier to buy for a young child, but harder for a teenager,” she said. “There is an option to leave a gift card, so the teens, in particular, can purchase something they would enjoy.” Members of the community are welcome to leave gifts up until Friday, 16 December. The gifts will be given the next day. Ms Bevan said DRERS also prepared hampers to give away, so donations such as plum puddings were welcome. “Through giving away hampers, it may allow people to perhaps visit, or invite, friends and relatives to share Christmas lunch,” she said. “It’s a great way to help people feel connected.” The Belgrave Library is located at Reynolds Lane, Belgrave. DRERS is located at 1632 Burwood Highway, Belgrave. For more information, phone (03) 9754 7777.

Christmas tree tips from the top A FUN, old-fashioned family Christmas isn’t complete without a real tree. Hundreds of luscious green trees fill the farms waiting to be picked and brought to life with decorations, but how can families possibly decide which tree is right for them? Ports Christmas tree advisor Frank Porto says picking the right Christmas tree is a fun and exciting experience and shouldn’t be a daunting task. “It creates a family atmosphere,” Mr Porto says. “There’s more love and willingness, as opposed to just picking one from a shop or getting one out of a box from last year.” He says that when picking a tree, there are a lot of things to consider. “When families are going to buy a tree, they need to consider where they’re going to put it - if it’s going to be put in a corner, if they want a thin one or a fat one,” Mr Porto says. “Another thing to look out for is on the farm the trees always look smaller than they really are.” When deciding on the perfect tree, Mr Porto says families should always look for a tree that has a nice shape, and to make sure the branches look nice and healthy. “It’s normal for there to be some dead stuff around the bottom, and that’s fine, you can remove that later,” he said. Once the tree has been transported home, it needs to be freshly cut and put in water with a teaspoon of White King, if the family has not bought any

additional preservative when purchasing the tree. He says there are a number of tips families can follow to ensure their beautiful green tree stays in tip-top condition. Firstly, Mr Porto says to keep the
tree hydrated by watering it regularly. “They also need to keep it out of the sun, away from windows that get a lot of sunlight, and away from hot lamps,” he says. “It will also help to hose down the tree and give it a bit of a shake, to get rid

of any dust from the farm, and this will make the tree look brighter as well.” If a tree is properly maintained, Mr Porto says it will last between five to six weeks. If not, the tree will only last a maximum of three weeks.
He recommends families use a stand to keep the tree upright and to make it easier if the tree needs to be relocated. “It makes life so much easier,” Mr Porto says.

Gift tree spreads hope MONBULK’S Cafe Blue Gum is spreading hope this Christmas for those affected by family violence. In conjunction with Safe Steps, a Melbourne-based family violence response centre that helps women and children affected by domestic violence, Cafe Blue Gum is introducing a gift tree. The tree was designed for locals to place an unwrapped gift beneath the tree for those who may be spending Christmas alone.
Cafe Blue Gum owner Leanne Reid said the gift tree was something she was very passionate about. “It’s basically for people to leave a gift like a pamper pack for women, or gift cards -they’re great, or a toy,” Ms Reid said. “For kids, it will be really nice for them to get presents and the mums and other women who receive the gifts will greatly appreciate it. “It’s sad, it’s not their fault.” Donations can be up until
Friday 16 December, and then Cafe Blue Gum will transport the donations to Safe Steps, where the gifts will be distributed to families and individuals in Melbourne. “It’s something we’re very passionate about at Cafe Blue Gum,” Ms Reid said. Cafe Blue Gum is located on 80B Main Road, Monbulk, and can be contacted on 9756 7802. For more information on Safe Steps, visit www.safesteps.org.au At the pharmacy are Gabby, Louise and Belinda. 162444
Gifts galore at this pharmacy LOUISA and staff at Emerald Village Pharmacy welcome you all back to their bigger and brighter pharmacy. service from staff. Emerald Village Pharmacy will be closed on Christmas Day, Sunday, 25 December, but open for trading on Boxing Day, Monday, 26 December, and Christmas Day public holiday on Tuesday, 27 December, from 9am until 2pm. Carols make it festive all over THE festive season in Mount Evelyn will kick off with the Children’s Christmas Carol event at the Wray Crescent rotunda on Saturday, 10 December. In what is the first event in a jam-packed festive program for the township, it will feature free children’s activities, showbags and sausage sizzle, as well as a visit from Captain Koala and KC the Neighbourhood Watch Dog. Of course, not to mention a visit from the big man in the red suit, with Santa Claus arriving at 11am. From the Neighbourhood Watch Caravan, safety identification engraving will be available for cyclists. The young choristers will be combined from the Mount Evelyn and St Mary’s primary schools, with the event’s activities to start at 10am and concluding at 12noon. The Children’s Christmas Carols is being organised through the Mount Evelyn Community House and the Mount Evelyn Neighbourhood Watch. Anne Welsh from Mount Evelyn Neighbourhood House said it was a fantastic opportunity for the townsfolk. “We have a wonderful community partnership with the
Community House, it’s great to see the community come alive and celebrate Christmas together,” Ms Welsh said. “We felt this is really needed in the town and we’ve been pleased with the support we’ve received. “It’s a real focal point of celebrations in Mount Evelyn.” The planned activities don’t stop there. The following Saturday, 17 December, from 10am to 2pm, there will be groups of choristers singing Christmas Carols around the business district of Mount Evelyn. Also included will be a children’s treasure hunt, photo with Santa opportunities and the traders’ novelty Christmas tree competition (judged by Santa). Then, the next day - at 4pm, 6pm and 8pm - the Discovery Church will present its annual Christmas Carols at the church in Monbulk Road, Mount Evelyn. Meanwhile, during December, the Mount Evelyn Chamber of Commerce will have a Giving Tree at the Mount Evelyn Community Bank, while a second will be located at the Mount Evelyn Community House. Both trees give the opportunity to place an ‘unwrapped’ present under the trees for families in need.
The students will be in fine tune for their performance. 162363

Spread the good word for break By Peter Douglas THE Ferntree Gully Salvation Army is encouraging the community to spread the Christmas cheer as far and wide as possible this year. To do their part, the local Salvos branch has numerous initiatives and activities in store to help improve the lives of others in what can be a stressful time for many. Included in this is their annual Christmas Cheer period, which starts in mid-December and during which they give away toys as presents for families. Lt Shana Ainsworth, from the Ferntree Gully Salvation Army, said it was important to ensure all members of the community enjoyed a merry Christmas. “Everybody likes things to be just perfect for Christmas but it’s not always easy, which can make it a tense time for people,” she said. “This time is also a school holiday period, which can place added stress on many families. “Any way in which we, or the community, can help is appreciated by those who need a helping hand.” The Ferntree Gully Salvation Army is also hosting a ‘Messy’
Christmas Carols during the first week of December. This activity aims to bring some festive cheer to those who may be feeling a little lonely during the Christmas break. Lt Ainsworth said the community could help through donating items to their mini-market pantry. Meanwhile, the broader Salvation Army launched its annual Christmas Appeal on Wednesday, 23 November. According to the Salvation Army, new research has revealed more than 8.4 million Australians believe Christmas is a ‘financial nightmare’, with nearly half a million children likely to receive no presents. The research also revealed 852,000 almost always feel lonely at Christmas ... enough people to fill a major sports stadium like the MCG eight times. The Salvation Army expects to help 70,000 families across Australia in the six weeks before Christmas and in the critical month afterwards. To donate to The Salvation Army Christmas Appeal, please visit www.salvationarmy.org.au or call 13 72 58.
The Salvation Army is urging the community to consider others in the lead-up to Christmas. 162287

Gee, it’s gone quickly: mayor By Yarra Ranges Mayor, Noel Cliff ONE thing we tend to all have in common at this time of year is that feeling that the year has flown by quicker than the last. And what a year it has been! There’s no better time than Christmas to wind down, relax and enjoy spending quality time with family and friends. On a personal level, the festive season is a time for me to reflect on the year that was, and to spare a thought for the people in our community less fortunate, who may not have the company of family and friends, or who struggle to put food on the table or gifts under the tree. Christmas is certainly a time for giving - but not necessarily in the commercial sense that we’ve become accustomed to. Gifts don’t need to take the form of boxes wrapped in shiny paper and ribbon. A visit to an old friend or relative, or lending a hand to someone in need, can be just as deserving of the title ‘gift’. Friends of mine working in the Northern Territory - Ian and Judy Grieves - are great examples of the true meaning of giving. They manage a place called the Ali Curung Arlpwe Art and Culture Centre, fixing up an old building to use as a men’s shed for the local indigenous men in an effort to reduce levels of domestic violence. They are also teaching people in that community how to cook healthy meals to help reduce obesity levels and improve their health and well-being. It’s so amazing seeing people like this giving back to the community, and I’m currently supporting their efforts by collecting cooking utensils and send-

Merry Monbulk goes all day THIS will be the ninth year the Monbulk Business Network has promoted the Merry Monbulk event. But this will be the first time the event has been held on a Saturday as an all-day event. Merry Monbulk Christmas provides a great shopping opportunity for buying Christmas presents for family and friends. Many of the retail outlets have special offers and discounts, which are only available on the day. There will be street stalls and an opportunity to vote for the Best Dressed Window in Town, plus free raffle tickets at the outlets for a range of prizes donated by the Main Street shops. There will be lots for the children to do as well - a children’s colouring competition, a jumping castle, face-painting, temporary tattoos, temporary hair-colouring, as well as the popular animal petting zoo. Of course, Santa will be there as well, arriving by firetruck and giving showbags and lollies to the children, while posing for photographs. Live entertainment will be provided, plus an outside Special Event broadcast van which will provide street-wide music and reports of the day’s events and bargains. A roving reporter will interview business owners and attendees. Come and join in for a fun-filled event day, where everyone can shop and enjoy a family fun day out.

Giving as good as they get By Jodie Symonds DANDENONG Ranges primary schools are getting involved in the gift of giving this Christmas. Three Mount Evelyn Primary School students will be co-ordinating a Christmas Giving Tree throughout December. In conjunction with Anglicare Lilydale, Holy Fools and Mount Evelyn Community House - students Matt, Darcy and Liam will be holding a free dress day for students at the school. To participate in the event, each student will need to donate an item of long life food or a brand new toy without wrapping paper, and the boys will collect donations from each classroom. Mt Dandenong Primary School has introduced a wishing tree for its fourth year. The wishing tree is part of the Concern Australia Steps Outreach Service, who provides extensive support for young homeless people in Melbourne. MOUNT Evelyn RSL recently received a welcome surprise when they were awarded the ‘Community Group of the Year’ at the Mount Evelyn Chamber of Commerce awards night. In presenting the award, Chamber president Kathie Freeman highlighted the work the RSL sub-branch has completed for ex-service people and the community, as well as their commitment to the heritage of the area. This work includes their efforts regarding the popular, important Anzac Day Service. RSL president Roger Boness said it was fantastic news for the club.

MOUNT Evelyn’s Jim Humphrey is unable to walk his dog, and is in need of a volunteer. Mr Humphrey has been a member of the Pet Companion, a Bridges Connecting Communities program for many years. The program is aimed at gathering volunteers to help take care of pets for those who struggle to look after them for reasons including disability and age.
Mr Humphrey is in need of help of someone to walk his and his West Highland terrier cross, Mali. “First of all, (having a volunteer) would bring Mali’s weight down, and it would make her a bit more lively,” Mr Humphrey said. “I can’t take her for walks anymore. “It would also give me another person to talk to.” Pet Companion co-ordinator Leonie Boyle said the program currently had 25 volunteers across the Dandenong Ranges

STAND up and speak out against violence against women. That was the focus of a meeting on Friday 25 November, where almost 100 Yarra Ranges Council employees heard speeches from their CEO and a guest speaker about family violence. The event was organised by council under the banner of White Ribbon on the International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women, to launch its 16 Days of Activism in the lead-up to International Human Rights day on 10 December. Council CEO Glenn Patterson spoke at the meeting, at Lillydale Lake, and said the two days “reinforce the concept of a life free of violence, a human right”. He said there were four cases of family violence every day in the Yarra Ranges, and that the topic of violence against women was often “clouded in myth”, with people not aware or misattributing the causes. “It is still maintained by some that women are as violent as men, and it is still commonly misunderstood to be caused by mental health, drugs and alcohol, cultural factors and economic pressures - these may contribute, but they are not the casual factors,” Mr Patterson said. “The common denominator is
gender; the uncomfortable truth is that this is overwhelmingly perpetrated by men, and women and children are overwhelmingly the victims,” he said. “International research shows that violence against women occurs to a greater or lesser extent, depending on a few key factors: rigid adherence to gender stereotypes, the status of women compared to men and our violencetolerant attitudes.” Mr Patterson quoted former-General David Morrison’s speech, where he stated “The standard you walk past is the standard you accept” and said there were “lots of good men” and hoped to eliminate violence against women. “We can stop violence against women and children, but it will take collective action from all of us here - it will take all of us calling out unacceptable behaviour and all of us considering our own words, our own jokes and the language that we use,” he said. Women’s Health East speaker Kalee Henry then spoke about her personal experience with family violence, and being turned away or ignored by the people closest to her. “The friends I confided in didn’t want to get involved,” she said. “When I finally shared what I found horrifying with one par-
ticular work colleague, she said her husband was doing the same thing.” “Hurt and let down is an understatement, but I was just mostly dumbfounded - I was talking about being on the receiving end of mental, physical, emotional, financial, sexual and violently challenging behaviours - I was looking for answers.” She said the key to preventing violence against women was in education, and that educating future generations about healthy relationships now could help to change behaviours and attitudes in future. The staff members then went for a walk around Lillydale Lake, which will have a large white ribbon present on one of its islands for the 16 Days of Activism. Yarra Ranges Council waste trucks and fleet vehicles will also be emblazoned with anti-violence against women messages for the period. Anyone experiencing domestic violence can call the 24-hour National Sexual Assault, Domestic Family Violence Counselling Service on 1800 737 732 (1800 RESPECT) or the Sexual Assault Crisis Line on 1800 806 292. For more information, visit www.secasa.com.au In a violent or intimidating situation where police assistance is needed, always call triple-zero.
Stopping the plantings By Kath Gannaway GLADYSDALE home-owner Jodie Hobbs is one of a number of Upper Yarra residents calling on the State Government to stop the expansion of the Yellingbo Conservation Area (YCA) at Woori Yallock. Ms Hobbs told a meeting, including Department of Land, Waterways and Planning (DELWP) Regional Director, Kelly Crossthwaite, that planting proposed under the planned expansion would come within one metre of her home once an approved extension was completed. Ms Hobbs was among more than 100 people who attended the meeting called by the Yarra Waterways Group on Thursday night, 24 November, as part of an ongoing campaign to pare back the proposed expansion on the basis of increased bushfire risk and concerns weeds and feral animals will go uncontrolled on revegetated riverbanks. The meeting came just a day after Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio an-
nounced a bushfire risk assessment would begin in December for the YCA. Ms D’Ambrosio said in the release that the assessment would be a community-led process that was putting people first as a “first step in implementing an extended Yellingbo Conservation Area”. Ms Crossthwaite had the unenviable task of delivering the minister’s messages that the assessment would consider all risk factors and develop specific bushfire management recommendations and strategies to ensure the risk was managed effectively. Ms Crossthwaite repeated the earlier announcement that the assessment would be led by the local community with support from two independent fire experts, DELWP, Parks Victoria and Melbourne Water. Local brigades and Yarra Ranges Council will also be involved. YWG chair, Rick Houlihan, said the group had put together a community investigation report which would be used when a fire management plan was done for the area. “When we saw the width of a lot of
CO-EDUCATIONAL | ELC TO VCE
the corridors and the impact they could have on fuel, it made us think more seriously that the fire issue was the big issue here,” he said. YWG member, Geoff Cochrane spelled out their policy, saying “We want the Upper Yarra, the town section from Woori Yallock upstream to Millgrove and the Little Yarra from launching Place upstream to Gilderoy taken out of the investigation area, which is about 16 per cent of the whole area,” he said. He said the group was not challenging the Yellingbo concept and were supportive of the work being done to provide habitat for the endangered Helmeted Honeyeater and the Leadbeater’s Possum. “The inclusion of the Upper Yarra area, is just not sensible,” he said. A number of speakers put their personal views as local residents on the impact they believe revegetating the Yarra River and tributaries will have on their properties, and on the broader communities where the revegetation is planned. Ms Crossthwaite said the Bushfire

Asked whether the YCA expansion would be dropped if the assessment resolved that the bushfire risk was too great, Ms Crossthwaite said it was not a decision she could make. “It is loud and clear that you want this area taken out of the whole proj-
ect,” she said. “My job is to present to those who make decisions.” The YWG is set to meet with Minister D’Ambrosio at Woori Yallock on Tuesday, 29 November. Ms Crossthwaite also announced the first community meeting on bushfire risk would address Don Valley, particularly in relation to the rehabilitation of Haining Farm, on Saturday, 10 December at Don Valley Primary School.

Mix of chronic pain and fear FEAR-AVOIDANCE behaviour is a theory that evolved in the 1980s that continues to both gain momentum and create debate about the nature of musculoskeletal pain. We all experience acute pain at some stage or other. Yet, while most will recover from a painful episode once the initial symptoms settle, some will spiral into a chronic pain pattern that negatively influences not just their physical health but also eventually their emotional, psychological and even their economic well-being. The fear-avoidance behaviour model states it is overly fearful people who go on to develop chronic pain.

It is thought that these fears arise from an initial injury or painful episode involving actual soft tissue damage, yet once the injury has healed the person continue to associate those movements with the pain. This can lead to disengagement with a range of meaningful activities -
such as sport, hobbies, social contact and work - leading to disability and depression. And more pain: a vicious cycle, indeed. Opponents of the model have long decried its simplicity, yet new evidence appears to be emerging that places this model in a more modern setting. Professor Lorimer Mosely from the University of South Australia is leading the charge. Most notably he hypothesised recently that those who perceive expected musculoskeletal pain to be uncontrollable are most likely to develop chronic pain, such as people
SES are as busy as it gets By Peter Douglas THE 9 October windstorm in the Yarra Ranges has pushed the Emerald SES Unit to become one of busiest in Victoria. For the unit, last month ended with 581 requests for assistance, with the annual total to October hitting 1274 requests. Just on its own, the windstorm resulted in 402 requests for assistance, after 120km/h hour winds hit the region in one of the largest storm events to hit in decades. Emerald SES Unit Controller, Ben Owen, has paid tribute to all the groups who showed their support, as well as acknowledged the many messages of support. “It really was a combined emergency services effort to clear the hills and get them back to working normally again, he said. “Emerald Emergency Support Group, along with the local unit’s auxiliary members, fed the weary troops over 500 meals during the extended clean-up period.” Mr Owen said the plaudits they received were appreciated by those who assisted, and continue to assist, including the volunteers from Emerald and other units, SES units from Gippsland; as well as CFA, MFB and DELWP. Mr Owen said the lack of facilities at Emerald had proven a challenge during this time. “(We achieved) all of this out of a building that is falling down around our ears,” he said. “Members gave up two days to reconform the truck bay doors so that we could get vehicles out. “The rolling mechanism had worn out and the door needed three people to slide it open. “This, however, has led to gaps in the doors which let in the weather.” Meanwhile, Yarra Ranges Shire has admitted this year’s fire prepa-
with fibromylagia. And those who perceive it to be controllable, yet still avoid the behaviour, are likely to develop avoidance behaviours that are specific to that particular task or movement only. This provides some interesting cues to practitioners on how to both identify at risk people at an early stage of injury and treat those who are suffering from chronic pain. It underlines the need for early intervention for spinal pain and injuries from science-based practitioners, and the restoration and reinforcement of normal movement patterns to avoid the chronic pain spiral.

rations will be a challenge for many residents, but encouraged landowners to try to reduce their bushfire risk. Yarra Ranges Shire Chief Executive Officer, Glenn Patterson, said there were options to assist residents. “The storm destroyed 31 homes, damaged countless more, and also spread piles of green waste and tree debris across the municipality,” he said. “Council’s bundled branch collection, beginning 28 November,
will certainly assist residents to clear small branches and debris, but will not have the capacity to collect larger tree material.” Mr Patterson said council was asking residents who were struggling to clear their properties of tree debris to call the shire on 1300 368 333. And for those already suffering from chronic pain, reducing painful stimulus with hands-on therapy is very important. Yet it must be interlinked with exercise that reinforces normal movement patterns and the awareness of normal movement. Physiotherapists are well placed to deal with these issues, and many utilise Clinical Pilates for this very reason. There are many ways for people to engage in restorative movement and they should seek their health practitioner’s advice on how to go about this, rather than put up with chronic musculoskeletal pain.

Ex-mayor health scare By Jesse Graham IT WAS a symptom that many people would overlook or brush off that caught former mayor Jason Callanan’s attention at the end of August and prompted him to action. Mr Callanan, who is a paramedic, said that he felt chest pain while in his office at the Yarra Ranges Council offices in Lilydale on Tuesday, 30 August, and quickly called an ambulance for himself. “The chest pain was very different to what I’d felt previously and was quite severe, so I thought I should get it checked out,” he said. “I was at the office and I pretty much stepped out, without letting anybody know. “It just happened very suddenly.” Paramedics in the ambulance could not find anything abnormal on the heart monitor, and took him to Box Hill Hospital, meeting up with a MICA (Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance) unit along the way. After arriving, he was told he had an aortic dissection - where a tear in the aorta results in blood flowing between the layers of the aortic wall, forcing them apart. Aortic dissections can cause severe chest or back pain, which was the symptom Mr Callanan noticed,
and can lead to death due to lack of blood flow to the heart or a ruptured aorta. Mr Callanan was then transferred to the Austin Hospital, where he underwent 11 hours of surgery and spent four weeks recovering in intensive care, before being transferred to the Angliss Hospital for rehabilitation. “I needed to learn to walk again,” Mr Callanan said. “I lost over 20 kilograms ... I ended up having to learn how to do a lot of things that we all take for granted.” Speaking to the Mail on Thursday 24 November, Mr Callanan said he had been discharged a week early and was recovering at home with his family and medication for his heart. “I’m on a walker, but I’m going to rehab at the Angliss to work on that, and I also do a cardio rehab as well - just to help me with exercise,” he said. “From family, through to work, especially with the ambulance, as well as council, they’ve all been very, very supportive, and bent over backwards to accommodate anything that I’ve asked for.” Though Mr Callanan had planned to recontest his seat of Chandler for this year’s council elections, his sudden stay in hospital meant he was not able to formally nominate for the election in
person at Healesville. “I was intending to run and ... was getting material ready, but, unfortunately, it just happened,” he said. His four years in council, and recent year in the mayor’s role, was acknowledged by new mayor Noel Cliff in his speech to councillors on 8 November. “It’s something you wouldn’t wish on anyone, and he was doing a hell of a good job,” Cr Cliff said, adding that he and the council wished Mr Callanan a speedy recovery. From here, Mr Callanan has six months of rehabilitation ahead before getting back into his work with Ambulance Victoria. “My recovery is the most important thing,” he said. “Family is something that I want to ... spend more time with, and so they’re the two most important things for me at the moment. “I will keep in touch with council, because I’ve made some good friends there, and also, when I’m more active, I guess I’ll be out in the community a bit more.” Come 2020, Mr Callanan said he would step back into the ring and run for the Chandler Ward, which was won by new councillor Tony Stevenson in this year’s election. “I will be running for council in four years. I will.”

Bring out your best By Jesse Graham THE council is calling on residents to nominate people who have improved their communities for next year’s Australia Day Awards, with nominations set to close on 12 December. The Yarra Ranges Council’s Australia Day Awards nominations are currently open via the council’s website ahead of the awards ceremony on Thursday, 26 January, 2017. Mayor Noel Cliff said the awards were a chance to thank people who
gave to their communities, and encouraged residents to make a nomination before the closing date of Monday 12 December. “We want to honour the commitment of those who work hard to make a difference in our community,” Cr Cliff said. “These are the people who challenge us to make our own contribution greater.” The Citizen of the Year award is open to people above the age of 26 as of Australia Day, while the Young Citizen of the Year and the Ken McIntosh Memorial Award for Young
Environmental Achievers are open for people under the age of 26; other awards include the Environmental Achiever of the Year, Community Group of the Year and the Mayor’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Yarra Junction footballer Brendon Murphy was the 2016 Yarra Ranges Citizen of the Year, for his work in creating a video with members of the AFL Yarra Ranges league that condemned violence against women. Switching from player to player, the men in the video said that every week, a woman was killed by her
partner or ex-partner in Australia “by a man who should know better, with mates who should know better”. “The only number of acceptable deaths from domestic violence is zero,” Mr Murphy said in the video. The video was viewed thousands of times, shared around Facebook by players and residents and featured on television and through media outlets. RESIDENTS will no longer be able to collect firewood from public land, with DELWP’s Spring 2016 Firewood Collection Season closing up on Thursday, 1 December. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP)’s forest and fire operations regional manager Peter Kambouris said that from Thursday, the firewood collection areas would be closed for summer. “It will be illegal for people to collect firewood on public land until the start of the Autumn Firewood Collection Season,” he said. Mr Kambouris noted that some areas may have already closed, due to firewood supplies being exhausted, or rain and flooding making tracks to the areas unsafe. The autumn collection season opens from 1 March, 2017, if conditions allow. Mr Kambouris said that Forest Fire Management Victoria staff would be patrolling parks, forests and reserves to police the closing of the collection areas. On-the-spot fines for collecting firewood illegally can be up to $622, and if charges are pressed through the courts, offenders can be fined $7773, receive one year imprisonment or both. For more information, visit www.delwp.vic. gov.au/firewood or call 136 186.
Opinion Hall is ‘art crappo’ PLEASE do not let the vocal minority ruin the plan that has been voted for by the majority after an extensive community consultation process regarding the Hills Hub. The old hall is the ugliest building in Emerald and has to go. It is not art deco, it is more like ‘art crappo’. We want this new hub and a new hall to service us and our descendants in 50 to 100 years from now. Just get on with it! John King, Emerald.

TECOMA Primary School students are among thousands of Victorian children who have embraced a challenge to read more books. Education Minister James Merlino on Friday, 25 November, visited Tecoma Primary School to celebrate the school’s participation in the 2016 Premier’s Reading Challenge. More than 230,090 participants from 3206 schools, early childhood settings and homes participated in the challenge in 2016, reading nearly four million books. The challenge asks students in Years 3 to 10 to read 15 books or more between 16 March and 9 September. For students in Prep to Year 2, the challenge is to read or “experience” 30 books. Children who have not yet started school are challenged to read or experience 40 books, with the help of their families. A key Education State target is to increase the number of Year 5 and Year 9 students reaching the highest levels of achievement in reading by 25 per cent - and the challenge is helping meet that goal. Students who complete the challenge will receive a signed certificate from Premier Daniel Andrews and former premiers. Mr Merlino said reading was a great way to engage with children. “The Premier’s Reading Challenge encourages students to discover the joys of reading and explore new concepts and ideas,” he said. “It’s great to see that so many keen readers at Tecoma Primary took up the Premier’s Reading Challenge in 2016.”

Good time to go Loonee By Peter Douglas FAVOURITE ska-pop exponents Loonee Tunes are excited to be back on their home turf, right in the middle of a national tour. In what promises to be another high-energy, irresistibly danceable performance, the ‘Loonees’ are bringing out some special guests for their show on Friday, 16, December. Front-man Adam Timms said the Sooki crowd was among their favourites. “We’ve played Sooki a couple of times a year for the past few years and we’re always amazed by the support we get from the audience,” he said. “Most of them are just there to have a good time and we give them that.” Timms said interstate audiences had been responding well to their recent shows, with the band in tip-top shape. “We’re on top of our game right now, with the strongest line-up ever,” he said. “Our horn section is tight and powerful, while the rest of the band are energetic and focused on the show.”
The band formed in 1982 after being drawn to bands such as The Specials, The Selecter and Madness. Their list of achievements is quite impressive, supporting a number of high-profile acts on the ska scene. Their confidence and sound has grown considerably over the years and they have grown a loyal fan base, particularly after their Sooki shows. Timms said like a fine wine, the band was getting better with age and encouraged old fans and new to check out their progress. For those lucky enough to have witnessed a previous Loonee at Sooki outing, you know it is one not to be missed. Either way, there will be a birthday boy in a suit, some very special guests, as well as blasts from the collective Loonee pasts. The group is expecting big things ... the sort that can only happen in Belgrave, the home of Sooki and the Loonees. For more information, visit www.sookilounge.com. au.
Loonee Tunes will bring their unique musical style to local audiences.
The vicar is in for a laugh or two By Peter Douglas THE renowned 1812 Theatre is presently holding its last play for the 2016 season, the stage adaption of the BBC TV comedy series, ‘The Vicar of Dibley’. The stage version of this hilarious, heartwarming BBC TV sitcom features all the eccentric characters many audiences have come to love. These include Alice, the blonde, dippy verger; Owen, the earthy local farmer and the stuttering Jim who prefaces most remarks with “No-no-nono-yes!” Of course, there’s the inimitable vicar herself. Geraldine Granger is a boisterous, fun-loving female minister who serves the community in an eccentric, conservative small village church, bringing mayhem and comedy at every turn. The script is by Richard Curtis and Paul Mayhew Archer, writers of Blackadder and Mr Bean. Don’t miss this unique chance to see three episodes of ‘The Vicar of Dibley’ live on stage in one show. The show is directed by Loretta Bishop. Performance dates will be held until Saturday, 10 December. For more details, visit www.1812theatre.com.au.
Doctor Who meets the Pokemon on big screen Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (M) Starring: Eddie Redmayne and Katherine Waterston
The stage adaption of 'The Vicar of Dibley' is sure to be a winner among local audiences. 162411
FANTASTIC Beasts and Where To Find Them is a dazzling and often heart-warming fantasy film let down by an unfocused narrative and a lack of originality, even setting aside its status as a Harry Potter spin-off. Wizard zoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) travels to 1920s New York with a suitcase full of magical creatures, many of which he must recapture after they escape to run amok in the city. Fantastic Beasts is full of quirky, endearing characters with touching relationships and engaging development. The action set-pieces and visual design are stunningly beautiful, and the film really succeeds in presenting a vibrant living world, capturing the wonder and danger of magic as effectively as the Potter franchise ever has. Unfortunately, the plot can’t quite get its act together. For all its fascinating world-building and intriguing sub-plots, the film is terribly vague about the villain’s plan, why MACUSA (the Magical Congress of the United States) is so distrusting of magical creatures or why Newt has even come to New York in the first place. Redmayne is fun but uninspired as Newt, with his persona almost a carbon copy of the Eleventh Doctor from Doctor Who. The wonderfully expressive, dignified Katherine Waterston, as MACUSA agent Porpentina, holds her own far more as a performer and character. The running goal is also strongly reminiscent of Pokemon. Fantastic Beasts is a delightful film if you ignore the sloppy set-up and serious identity crisis. - Seth Lukas Hynes

Inclusion all year round By Glenn Foard ON 3 December each year, the United Nations recognises the International Day of People with Disability. Some 20 per cent of Australians have some type of disability - either congenital or acquired after birth. Any member of the community, young or old, can have a disability. So while disability is quite common, it is not always well understood. The International Day of People with Disability aims to increase awareness of disability and promote positive attitudes about disability. I recently had the pleasure of speaking to members of the Lilydale Probus Club about our work at Melba Support Services and disability generally. Similarly, on 9 December, individuals we support, Melba staff and students from Mount Evelyn Primary School will get together to celebrate International Day and give students the opportunity of learning more about disability. Our message on such occasions is simple - we are all members of the
one community with very similar aspirations. We can, simultaneously, acknowledge and respect differences while recognising our commonalities. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has brought a greater focus to disability in recent times. Importantly, the NDIS will provide about 460,000 Australians with a permanent and significant disability with the support they need to live an ordinary life. It has been described as the most significant social reform since the establishment of Medicare in the 1970s and, in the great Aussie tradition, it aims to give people with disability ‘a fair go’. It has been widely supported across the community and by all political parties. A three-year trial was completed in June this year and the NDIS is now beginning to roll out across the country in stages. It is scheduled to begin in Melbourne’s Outer Eastern suburbs in November 2017. Just like International Day, the
NDIS will promote greater awareness by highlighting the significant contribution that people with disability make to the nation - socially, culturally and economically. At Melba Support Services, we are determined to contribute to the scheme’s success. We are holding information days, assisting people prepare to enter the NDIS and delivering services as a registered provider. Anyone wanting further information or advice can contact us on 9212 0100 or visit our website at melbasupport.com.au. The theme for International Day in 2016 is about ‘Achieving Goals for the Future We Want’. This aligns strongly with the intent of the NDIS to assist people achieve their goals and aspirations - to work, to live in their own homes, to have friends and relationships, and participate broadly in community life. It is a great thing to celebrate International Day once a year, but it’s even more important to advance its key messages of inclusion and participation every day of the year.

Dunlop puts spine back in By Steve Brown FTGDCA UPPER Gully turned the tables on their recent batting failure when they encountered little resistance in pursuit of 244 set by the Belgrave Magpies to complete round five of the Norm Reeves Shield. Having dropped the last game to Knox Gardens, the Kings rebounded on the back of Peter Dunlop’s brilliant captains knock of 132 not out, winning the match in fine style by eight wickets against a good attack. Talented Daniel Beyer, returning to cricket this season from injury, lent support with 43 while veteran Jay Colee (35no) was at the crease with Dunlop when the game was secured. Upwey-Tecoma tasted defeat for the first time this season when their 272 was not enough to match the reigning premiers Knoxfield. Tom Boxell showed his class with a majestic 85 to steer his side home with four wickets to spare. Regional Under 21 representative keeper/batsman Ben Gerloff chipped in with 51 while Adith Sundaresh made another solid 43 and is in terrific form.
Knox Gardens made it two wins in a row as they downed Monbulk at home by four wickets. Chasing 262 for victory, the Falcons were once again led by Jarrod Butcher with 76 and a half century to young gun Niraj DeSilva. Monbulk are performing well with the bat. However, their bowlers are struggling to get the job done, but a win is not too far away. Eildon Park’s dual Feaver Medallist Shane Cosstick’s unbeaten 73 was enough to inflict another defeat on last season’s finalist The Basin, which were defending 158. Monto Perera has the Panthers in good form while the Bears have won only one match this season and need their bats firing next match. Ferntree Gully opened their account with an 82-run win over Mountain Gate. Gully all-rounder Bryce Galvin hits a long ball, and his 78 combined with 50 from Jake Evans denied Mountain Gate of an upset. In Decoite Shield, Olinda recorded their first win of the season downing Rowville by 25 runs with opening bowler Mitchell Harris the star with

Athletes scoring up By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS THE latest round of Little Athletics at Morrison Reserve had the Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes competing in the multi-event program. A competition where athletes compete in preselected events with their performance generating points, similar to the decathlon competition at Olympics. It is a fun, challenging event that brings out the best in all athletes as they strive to gain the most points they can in each event. Results will be announced at the next round of Little Athletics on Saturay, 3 December. The senior team had the week off apart from our talented Under 16s relay team of Harrison Van Duuren, Cameron Brown, Zane Wheeler and Pat Keating, who competed in teh Victorian Track Relay Championships at Lakeside Stadium. Some fantastic performances resulted in a 13th place in the medley relay and a 12th place in the 4x100m relay. The club had two athletes competing at the Australian Primary Schools Track and Field Championships in Sydney over the weekend. Kiara Flavel and Maddie Laven competed in the Under 11s Girls 800m, the final run on Monday. Check the club website for results. This coming weekend we have two athletes, Georgia Laven and Sam Norton, competing in the Australian All Schools Track and Field Championships in Canberra. Good luck, Georgia and Sam.
The Under 12s Boys enjoy the hurdles event during the multi-event day. 162441 Next week the Little Athletics program is on Saturday morning from 8.30am. Immediatley after the senior team hosts clubs in our zone in the latest round of AV Shield. A fantastic chance to see some of
the best athletes in the eastern suburbs competing at the Mount Evelyn track. Congratulations to past club member, Jordan Gallucci, selected at pick 15 by the Adelaide Football club in last Friday night’s AFL Draft. The club wishes Jordan the best of
