EMOTIONS ran high at the Cooroy Hall community meeting on Saturday (26 November), with council told to “get off their arses” and fix the hall. Council called the meeting to discuss what will happen to the Cooroy Memorial Hall, which the Cooroy RSL closed a year ago due to safety concerns. Council is currently in the process of taking on the trusteeship of the

hall from the Cooroy RSL and despite council not yet having official responsibility of the hall, it was clear some residents wanted answers and action right now. Angry residents slammed council for an apparent lack of action, accused them of fearmongering and scoffed when Mayor Tony Wellington said there were no pre-determined plans to tear down the memorial building. Community member Fred Broomhall said council needed to take the issue “by the horns, do the

right thing, open the hall, and stop all this waffling”. “Shame on you, Noosa Council,” he said. Community services director Alan “Fox” Rogers chaired the meeting and copped the brunt of the criticism but said council wanted to find out from the community what they wanted to happen with the hall. In his presentation, Mr Rogers said the repair bill for the hall could be $1 million and listed asbestos removal, termite damage and an unsafe roof as some of the major safety and repair

concerns for the historic building. Mayor Tony Wellington responded to the angry residents’ calls for action from council. “We can’t allocate ratepayer money for a building over which we have no control,” he said. “We simply do not have the authority to do that. Up until now, the authority and control of the building has been with the (Cooroy) RSL and we have been working both the RSL and the State Government to try and get to this point. “It has been a struggle. But staff

have been working hard over the past 12 months to get to this point.” Councillor Wellington said council had not been “sitting on their hands” and had been working with the RSL who had “changed their position a number of times throughout the process”. “Council has now finally reached the point where we have an agreement with the RSL that both of us can live with which means that now, we can move forward and council is doing its best to work with you all,” he said. No Poona bus for nude crew By Jolene Ogle THERE will be no bus to Poona for nudists after activist Robin Bristow left empty-handed from Member for Noosa Glen Elmes’ office on Monday (28 November). Mr Bristow and two supporters went to Mr Elmes’ office to see if he would fund a bus to Poona for nudists, but as it was a parliamentary sitting week, Mr Elmes was in Brisbane. In media reports last week, Mr Elmes said he would happily send nudists to Poona on a bus in response to claims nudists were being unfairly targeted by police at A-Bay. Mr Bristow wanted to “hold Mr Elmes to his word” and asked if he would fund the bus trip up to Poona for nudists. A spokesperson for Mr Elmes said anyone who had read his comments about a bus to Poona would know that it was made tongue in cheek. “Mr Bristow has once again misquoted Mr Elmes and that is why he stands by his decision to not engage with him,” the spokesperson said.

Zonta walking the talk By Jolene Ogle THE Zonta Club of Noosa held its annual walk along the Noosa Main Beach boardwalk on Sunday (27 November) to raise awareness of violence against women. The group was joined by locals who say no to violence and wanted to show their support for those who are living in or have survived domestic and family violence situations. Zonta Noosa service committee member Amy Ryan said days like Sunday served as a reminder that, while not every person expe-

rienced domestic violence first-hand, “every like-minded and responsible member of our community has the power to unite and say no to violence against women”. “Hopefully those who are suffering know that when they build the courage to speak up, they will be supported by their community and they won’t be alone,” she said. Amy was joined by police Inspector Jon Lewis of Noosa, Noosa councillor Ingrid Jackson, former councillor Sandy Bolton, and chairman of the board of the local branches of the Bendigo Community Bank Rick Cooper and members of the Zonta Club of Maroochy.

In April, council plans to call for further community input in response to the options paper and will hold another community meeting and in May, council staff expect to present to councillors a report on community feedback and a recommendation to council. Cr Jackson said the cost to repair the building range from $400,000 up to $1 million and said annual operations and maintenance would add to the cost, with building insurance alone being $20,000 a year. “This is a lot of money and we need creative solutions to save the hall, including taking a flexible approach to current restrictions on its use,” she said. Cr Jackson said both the State Government trust deed governing the hall and the current Noosa Plan significantly restricted its potential commercial uses. “There are severe limita-

tions. Ironically, the same laws that aim to protect the hall could end up causing its demise. We need to explore possibilities for achieving a flexible solution to both maintain the hall’s heritage value while allowing commercial endeavour to generate funds,” she said. “This will require changes to the trust deed.” Cr Jackson said the goal must be to ensure heritage value and community use while making the repair and operations of the hall financially viable. “I believe the council can play an important role in seeking to facilitate this,” she said.

Graffiti scum at work By Jolene Ogle THE entrance to the Noosa Waters estate has been defaced with big red letters reading “feminist scum”. The message of the graffiti or who it might be aimed at is unclear but passers-by can’t miss the large letters on the signage at the corner of Reef Street and Bluefin Circuit in Noosaville that appeared sometime over the weekend. Noosa Waters Resident Association vice-president Grant Holloway said he wasn’t aware of the graffiti, but said the information would be passed onto the landscaping co-coordinator for the estate. Mr Holloway said this wasn’t the first time the estate had been defaced, with residents having to remove graffiti from their fences earlier this year.

IN AN effort to raise awareness of the impact a humble daily takeaway coffee can have on the environment, Noosa Civic Shopping Centre is partnering with local environmental organisation Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA) to encourage the use of reusable coffee cups. Noosa Civic Centre manager Brian Turner said the team was excited to be continuing its successful #KeepNoosaBeautiful campaign, which started in December 2015 with the aim of reminding residents and visitors about the importance of reducing waste and making environmentally sustainable product choices. “With thousands of shoppers set to visit the centre during the busy Christmas period, we’re taking the opportunity to draw attention to this very important issue while also raising funds for NICA’s tireless work

within the local area,” Mr Turner said. “During December, we’re offering shoppers the chance to purchase a reusable #KeepNoosaBeautiful KeepCup for their daily coffee for just $5, with all funds raised through the initiative being directed to NICA.” “The Australian-designed and made KeepCups generally retail for around $27 so shoppers have the opportunity to secure a stylish and practical reusable coffee cup at a greatly reduced price, while also raising money for a very worthy local not-for-profit organisation.” “Community members and tourists are also invited to share photos of Noosa’s beautiful environment with the hashtag #KeepNoosaBeautiful, and Noosa Civic will again donate one dollar to NICA for every photo shared during December using this hashtag.” NICA Chair Tony Haslam said it was a common misconception that

most disposable coffee cups were recyclable and he was delighted to be involved in raising awareness among consumers. “Many people don’t realise that most disposable cups are lined with a plastic known as polyethylene, which means they cannot be recycled,” Mr Haslam said. “They are a major source of pollution and are of particular concern when they end up in landfill or in our waterways where they can easily get inside the stomachs of marine creatures. “Even compostable cups require commercial composting to biodegrade, so it’s critical that we all take a closer look at our everyday habits and purchase decisions and take action to support our environment.” The #KeepNoosaBeautiful campaign will commence at Noosa Civic shopping centre 1 December until sold out, with 100 per cent of funds raised being allocated to NICA programs such as the ‘Wallum Festival’.

Thursday’s girls are full of hope By Hollie Harris THE Thursday Girls held their final function for 2016 last Thursday at The Waterfront Restaurant on Gympie Terrace. The fund-raiser was held to raise money for children in our local region who are financially struggling to pay for their education expenses. There are many families who cannot afford to pay for the extra things many other children are lucky to have access to for their education. School excursions, sports and special school equipment are just a few things that many of our schoolkids are unable to afford and these fundraisers help allow these kids to have access to a better future. Financial sneak peek NOOSA councillors have had a sneak peek of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) annual financial report during a special presentation from the board on Thursday 24 November. NBRF chairman Campbell Corfe said the board took the opportunity to update the council on Biosphere Reserve activities since operations started in July 2015, providing financial information, an outline of the current strategic thinking, and an overview of programs that were underway and in the pipeline. Mr Corfe said the NBRF will

provide a similar presentation to NBRF members at an annual general meeting which is scheduled for 9 December and a report will be released online following the AGM. “The presentations are an overview of an annual report which we will formally release to council following our AGM, together with audited financial statements for the year ended 30 June 2016. “They will be posted to our website after the meeting,” he said. Mr Corfe said the key messages in the report included thank-

ing the council for its support and explaining that $600,000 has been committed to five programs. “We have under-spent on our operational budget for our 18 months of operations to December 2016 and we have laid good foundations for extending our efforts during the 2017 financial year and will, making reference to our DGR status, include seeking other funding external to council,” Mr Corfe said. “We recognise the enormous contribution to the Noosa Biosphere Reserve concept from a large number of people since our

original application to the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere program in 2007 - our story today is their story as well.” Mr Corfe said the foundation acknowledged it could do more to communicate to the community and expected to release an explanatory video in conjunction with the Noosa Community Biosphere Association. “We also committed to a deeper review of some aspects of our governance early next year,” he said.

They are inviting all painters and would-be painters interested in joining an art group next year to an information morning on next Thursday 8 December from 10am - 12 noon at Tinbeerwah Hall. THIS healthy male koala dropped in for a few days in Tewantin bushland beside Peter Whittington’s property. The visitor slept it off during the day but became a bit more animated at dusk and climbed to higher branches to have a feed. Mr Whittington sent the information through to Koala Watch which informed him that the koala was new to the area. Koala Watch said Mr Whittington and his family could name the koala if they wished and with the help of his grandchildren it was decided to name the visitor Eucy - short for eucalyptus. A sniffer dog named Baxter and his handler Daniel from Sunshine Coast University came out to the site and collected fresh scat for analysis.

Bruce was one of the best Ron Lane’s

people THE lead swimmers had turned the last can and were heading for the beach. Behind them were some forty plus clubmates - spread out over the course of 1.2 kilometres. Some were cruising, some were finding it tough, but among them were a group who had two things in common. First they were determined to put up a good show and second they were there because of one man, Bruce Warren: and the occasion was the Annual Shirley Strachan Memorial Swim. Starting on the sands of Noosa's Little Cove and finishing on Main Beach, the event was under the sponsorship of McDermott Aviation. John McDermott had been a good mate of Shirley Strachan and as such wanted to do something fitting in memory of his mate. As both John and Bruce were of a swimming background John decided to approach with an idea and get Bruce's opinion and suggestions. The result was the annual memorial swim. “I sat with Bruce and we talked. Because of our similar background he understood where I was coming from. That was some twelve years ago and now it is the most important swim on the Noosa Club's swim calendar. Bruce's wife Sandy stepped in to help and we haven’t looked back,” said John.

The swim was for Noosa members only and the age was from 11 to 60. Bruce Warren, who hailed from Sydney, joined the Noosa Club in 1998. He was a former endurance swimmer and had been a qualified swim coach since 1969; this plus his twenty-five years of pool management in NSW ensured that he came to us with great credentials. He obtained his bronze and went on to the patrol roster and also became a member of the masters swim team. In the seasons ahead he went on to hold the positions of swim captain, team manager and bronze swim coach. It was during my time as club President of Noosa that I and other club presidents were called upon to be aware of the increasing workload being performed by our mobile rescue craft. “Gentleman don’t ever forget that our basic requirement for patrolmen is still swimming and always will be, so make sure that you maintain a high standard of swimming in your clubs.” This was taken on board-and we all agreed. So what to do at Noosa? The next day I found the solution. Standing in the breezeway reading the notice board was the answer to my problem. It was our old club mate Bruce Warren. Taking a deep breath (because we had had our ups and downs) I approached him and said, “Bruce I have a job for you.’’ “Yeah what’s that?”

Bruce Warren. “I want you to raise the standard of swimming in the club, right across the board.” I then went on to explain the reason and to my relief he totally agreed. "Too many of our kids are depending on the IRB’s and other craft. They forget that if something goes wrong out there,” he said pointing to the ocean, “they might have to swim for it. I’ll do it for you.” And he did exactly that. End result: another quiet achiever whose contribution to beach safety in our community has so far gone unnoticed.

He started as swim coach of the bronze squads and in the months ahead many gave him credit for raising their fitness level as well as their ability. He reintroduced the 10am Sunday swim and best of all, along with wife Sandy and John McDermott, and they, as a team, established the Memorial swim. I will never forget the first ever swim. It was Australia Day and the entries for the swim were in the high thirties. The smiles on the faces in particular those of the young, said it all. They took part and they achieved.

But most pleasing was the number of young ones who walked over and said thanks to Bruce (forever supported by Sandy) and his team. The success of that first swim ensured that the Shirley Strachan Memorial Swim was here to stay. Away from the world of family and lifesaving, Bruce's other big love affair was Rugby Union; a game he played as a young man. His support for the NSW Waratahs was set in concrete. His verbal exchanges in the men’s locker room with club President Ross Fisher (a kiwi and All Black supporter) were somewhat legendary; in particular when the All Black name of Ritchie McCaw was mentioned. In the world of surf lifesaving, respect is not given it is earned; and Bruce’s many contributions paved the way for our respect. Sadly last week following a short illness, Bruce passed away, leaving wife Sandy and club mates devastated. Club President Ross Fisher spoke for us all when he said, “He will be missed throughout the club. Young director UNITED Synergies are Noosa’s not-for-profit organisation working with young people facing a range of issues and, following their AGM last week, are proud to announce Hayden Ford as their first ever Young Director Intern. United Synergies chairman Ian Montague said the Young Director Internship is about recognising the importance of promoting leadership and participation with young people on boards. “At a leadership level, for both the not-for-profit sector and for our organisation, we want to provide an opportunity for a young director to participate on our board,” he said. “The aim is to encourage leadership in young people and to give them an insight as to how boards function, as well as the opportunity to learn new skills from our current board of directors. “All too often, this opportunity is not given to young people - with the majority of board directors in Australia above the age of 35.” Mr Montague said the Young Director Internship not only recognised the importance of hearing directly from young people and promoting youth leadership, it also builds the community’s pool of future board members. Herod in voice THE traditional Christmas story might seem like a sentimental tale, but to British writer Dorothy L. Sayers it was anything but. Sayers’ radio play, “The Man Born to Be King” - first produced for the British Broadcasting Corporation in 1942 - explores the birth of Christ from the power-hungry perspective of King Herod. This unique production will be performed live on Saturday 3 December at 7.30pm at the Anglican Church of Noosa, 17 William Street, Tewantin. All are welcome and admission is just a food donation for Samaritan Care Christmas food hampers. All 18 members of the cast for The Man Born to Be King belong to the Anglican Church of Noosa, several with professional acting experience.

King Herod is played by Ian Williams, a Tewantin-based public relations professional who has performed in the UK, Canada, the US and Australia and Joanna MooreSmith, once a cast member on The Young Doctors television series as well as many Sydney theatre productions, plays the innkeeper’s wife who hosts Mary and Joseph. Show director Jo Kadlecek-Gilbert said the BBC commissioned Sayers to write these radio plays on the life of Christ at the same time Nazis were invading Europe, as a way of reconnecting with the country’s Christian roots and hope. “In many ways, the play’s retelling of Christ’s birth offers an amazingly relevant perspective for us to hear,” she said. “We wanted to give the Noosa community a new way to listen to

the Christmas story through a quality production and for a good cause - food donations for our neighbours in need.” Audience members will enjoy the re-recreation of the 1940s radio studio as actors deliver their lines into shared microphones complete with sound effects. The production is performed with permission from David Higham Literary Associates, London, England, and is one of many Christmas events the Anglican Church of Noosa will be hosting. Desert-dueller made in a day By Hollie Harris THROUGHOUT the month of October, Royal Enfield Australia and New Zealand held a bike build-off competition for all Royal Enfield dealerships across Australia and New Zealand to take part in. Scott Macken at Scooter Style / Noosa Motorcycles in Noosa said he thought it would be a great opportunity to think outside the square. The team decided to really challenge themselves and attempt to complete their custom bike build in just one day. On 31 October, Scott gathered his Scooter Style team Ben and Chris, together with some guest assistants in Doug, Kratzy, Mal and Brian and began their incredible bike transformation. They created a plan to transform a Royal Enfield Classic 500 in Battle Green into a desert-crossing, do-anything bike that would just keep going and going. Adding some super lighting for the darkest desert nights and a can of spare fuel ensured the bike would be able to do just that. With chunky monkey Pirelli Scor-

Team work NOOSA Heads officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight has praised local officers and security for their team work in catching three would-be thieves. On Saturday 19 November, a guard from a local security firm disturbed three youths trying to break into the Noosa Golf Club in Tewantin. One alleged offender lost their shoe as the security guard gave chase after calling the police. One youth was caught by the security guard and the other two were caught when the Dog Squad arrived to track them down. The three youths were officially cautioned and Sen Sgt McReight said their arrests were a good example of team work.

Foot traffic for bridge MUNNA Point Bridge is being given a facelift with a new footpath. Works began today and will take two weeks to complete, weather permitting. Except for next Friday night 9 December, the bridge will remain open to traffic. Traffic headed for Hastings Street on that night will be diverted through Noosa Drive. Short delays are expected during peak periods throughout the fortnight, as only one lane on Noosa Parade at the bridge will be open while work is underway.

Amy’s star rises THE fourth star on the Ri-con Christmas tree is for life-time community volunteer Amy Payne and is sponsored by her sister Jean Evans and beloved friends. Amy Winnifred Wilcken was born in Gympie on 17 April 1917. She started school at Eumundi and finished her education at Eerwah Vale. Amy helped her parents on their dairy and banana farm until her marriage in 1937 to Les ‘Tiger’ Payne. Amy moved to Cooroy and she and Les bought and sold farms, all the while also growing beans, until 1956 when they moved to Emerald Street and Amy’s community service began. She served on the Queensland Red Cross for more than 50 years helping Dr Luck with the blood bank, was a member for the Cooroy CWA for 64, was on the steering committee to raise funds to build Kabara Care in Cooroy where she held the position of treasurer for 18 years until computers took over (and Amy being in her late 80s decided to let them take over), and delivered for Meals on Wheels until she broke her shoulder at 88 years. Amy received many community awards including the 1982 Sunshine Coast Radio Station 4NA, 1995 Sunshine Coast 50 Years Anniversary World War II, 1998 Cooroy

Tourism operators go global Amy Payne will be honoured with a star on the Ri-con Christmas tree in Cooroy. Rotary Club, 1998 Premier of Queensland Award, 2001 Commonwealth Seniors, 2001 Queensland Year of Volunteers, 2006 Australian Red Cross 50 Years’ Service, and 2006 Reg Bryant’s Cooroy Rotary Award. Amy was also a keen bowler and life member of Cooroy Bowls Club where she held many positions over the decades, including president and treasurer many times. Amy also conducted Cards for Seniors for more than 35 years. Amy was very humble about her service, preferring the joy of

giving to that of receiving. She was a resident of Kabara Care Cooroy for four years and passed away at Nambour Hospital on 4 May 2016. She and Les did not have children. Les passed away 37 years ago. Amy was laid to rest with Les in the Cooroy Cemetery. She is survived by her sister Jean Evans and family of “Aveo” Albany Creek. Amy is remembered as a uniquely kind and generous soul who gave freely of herself

NEARLY 30 Tourism Noosa operators attended an information session this week hosted by Tourism Noosa to discover how they could benefit from completing the Global Ready Industry Program (GRIP) mentoring program and become ‘international ready’. Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said the Global Ready Industry Program has been designed to provide four suitable members with tools, knowledge and expertise to develop and market their business internationally. “The information session was an opportunity for members to discover what the oneon-one mentoring program involves, giving operators an overview of the international market and distribution channels, hearing from key trade

partners and also to discover how the GRIP program works,” he said. “The program will be delivered by qualified and experienced industry specialists from DR Tourism and will include one-on-one mentoring sessions including a review of their business and setting it to work in the international markets. “International markets are important to Noosa as typically international visitors stay longer than the domestic market and, on average, spend more than the domestic traveller. “International guests also tend to travel at different times of the year which can help even out seasonality in business.” The program will feature

five key sessions from understanding a business, discovering why to work with trade, reviewing and positioning price structure, being trade ready and finally, the sales pitch and getting ready with sales tools for contacting potential trade partners. Hayley Gee from Kanu Kapers attended the information session. “The afternoon was really informative and gave me a good insight into the potential that the international market can bring to my business and also how different marketing internationally is to reaching the domestic market,” she said. The program will commence in late January and finish in early May 2017.

Service on wheels THE Federal Government’s newest mobile service centre ‘Desert Rose’ will visit Pomona in the coming weeks, giving locals easy and convenient access to essential government payments and services. The mobile service centre has the same technology on board as any bricks and mortar service centre, and provides access to other services, such as free hearing checks. A staff member from the Australian Taxation Office will also be available to assist individual and small business taxpayers, to provide advice and information about tax and superannuation. Staff will also be able to help people register for myGov, a fast, simple way to access ATO and other government services online. Desert Rose will be in Pomona on Thursday 15 December at the Pomona Community House, from 9.30am to 2.30pm. Federal Wide Bay MP Llew O’Brien said the Desert Rose vehicle demonstrated the government’s ongoing commitment to improving access to govern-

ment services for all Australians, no matter where they lived. During the past financial year the government’s current fleet visited 381 towns and helped over 8900 people with Centrelink, Medicare and other critical services. “Desert Rose will help to connect people who live in regional and rural communities to government services and staff,” he said. The mobile service centre has been custom built - it is designed for use on roads that other larger mobile service centres were not able to travel on before, increasing the reach of government services to more communities. “I encourage local residents to come along and visit when it stops in their town,” Mr O’Brien said. POMONA Men’s Shed members have been hard at work building nesting boxes for Unitywater’s Cooroy Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). The 10 wildlife nesting boxes were crafted as part of a partnership which saw Unitywater assist the Men’s Shed with water and sewerage connections earlier this year. Unitywater environmental affairs manager Kylie Crouch said the nesting boxes have allowed Men’s Shed members to participate in a worthwhile project to enhance the environment, providing shelter and nesting sites for birds and wildlife. “There is reasonably mature regrowth vegetation around the STP that provides a great food source for native wildlife but most of the trees aren’t old enough to have developed many hollows which a range of birds and animals need for resting and breeding,” Ms Crouch said. “So nesting boxes provide a worthwhile alternative until tree hollows are formed naturally.” Ms Crouch said the Men’s Shed had built a variety of nesting boxes for animals of different sizes. “Some are larger with larger holes for bigger birds and possums and the smaller ones have been designed for smaller birds like rosellas and mammals like sugar and squirrel gliders,” she said. species that may use the nesting boxes. “We have an ecologist who has installed motion sensor cameras to try and take photos of any critters using the boxes. He will also do six-monthly monitoring of each box to visually check if wildlife are using the boxes and if so, which species they are,” she said. “This will help us understand how effective the nesting boxes are for local wildlife.” Men’s Shed treasurer Brian Lawson said the members enjoyed

making the nesting boxes. “We are happy with how they turned out and that birds and wildlife will have somewhere to call home,” Mr Lawson said. “We got the design from an ecologist - it fascinates me that birds can get in and out of the box with such a small hole.” The Men’s Shed will host a stall with plants from their greenhouse at the Pomona Markets on 10 December and hope to purchase some new tools for further projects. Warming to argument PHILLIP Rutherford presents a gold mine of opportunities. He would like to think that he has had the last word on climate change but, wait! He offers four “thoughts” about climate change that want addressing. It seems that Al Gore’s “hockey stick”, referring to the shape of a graph of temperature changes over the past 1000 years, is almost exactly correct, but only according to the USA National Center for Atmospheric Research and the Australian Academy of Science, and we know how sus these organisations can be. Ian Plimer, the geologist who said volcanoes produce more CO2 than humans and that breathing contributes extra CO2 to the atmosphere, produced a “book” for students that encourages students to ask “hard” questions of their activist teachers. My students didn’t uncover this wonderful resource, probably because they were only interested in scientific articles. However, The Australian Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, before it was eliminated by the Abbott Government, produced a comprehensive rebuttal to the untruths and misleading verbiage of the book. Probably why they got the sack. Even Rutherford would know that scientists don’t deal in facts or truths. They deal in probabilities and likelihoods and predictability. There are no facts about the future, so saying so is not an advance of anyone’s position. Modelling is a common feature of economics, science, engineering and construction, medicine, business and education, and, in fact, almost every endeavour of life. To fault it for climate science and not everything else is hypocritical. Are you really going to stop giving us more opportunity to discredit the deniers, Mr Rutherford? A stitch in time THE recent media talk about nudism prompted our family to spend the day at A-Bay. It was one of the most enjoyable and memorable days. Not easy being green WHAT a waste of a ratepayers’ money. I live in Riverstone Court which ends in a cul-desac. Yesterday without notice two trucks arrived and parked on the green. There were four council “workers” inside the vehicles. They were there to erect a fence at ratepayers’ expense and without consent. The green area was at one stage designated as a road, but it was subsequently changed to a reserve because it was no longer wide enough for a road. The green stretches for eight kilometres, passing the library, meals on wheels, bridge club, Wallace House, and many other council premises. At one end there is a car park for the bridge club, all fenced, and library parking along Wallace Drive. This fence is not needed; the grass space is used by multitudes of people, dog walkers, bird watchers, walkers, runners, football players, golfers, cricket players, rock balancers and so on. A fence in this beautiful spot is not needed. Occasionally the space behind Riverstone Villas may have the odd vehicle parked but this is not often and certainly not for long. The requisite key to open the gate and held by council officers is ludicrous. It certainly did not work with the bridge club, and now the gate into the closed-off bridge parking space is left open, mainly because council was not available to open or close the gate, so it was determined to forget about the shut gate. I can guarantee that the same thing is going to happen with the Riverstone Court gate when erected. What a waste of ratepayers’ monies. Kay Fielden, Tewantin.

Park pristine ON SUNDAY 20 November at 6am at Chaplin Park in Noosaville, several dog walkers and outrigger people were attempting to clear the park of half a bin of bottles, cans and other rubbish, including a plastic bottle with a short piece of hose inserted in the side. The table was smeared with graffiti - painted, felt pen and scratched into the surface of the table, seats, barbecue and gazebo. The floor and ground around the gazebo was littered with fine shards of clear glass that was difficult to pick up. Thankyou to all who helped return the park to its usual safe state. Plain offensive REALITY check. I am offended by the idiotic ideology of some people. In regards to Matthew Bourke’s letter (Noosa Today 24 November), why would any responsible parent take their children to Alexandria Bay? Most kids would never walk that far and if you have ever walked there yourself, then

you’d probably never do it again unless you were looking for solitude with nude bathers, like myself and many others. It’s not a safe beach. The so-called walking track is certainly not for the faint-hearted with roots and rocks, it’s dangerous in wet weather and the last kilometre of the coastal track is no better. Then you have to go down some 50m to an east facing beach that cops wind all day long and waves over one metre plus, no shade until late afternoon. With no flags, no ice-creams or drinks, it’s not a place for children. That’s why it’s always been a free beach. I’ve been visiting “free beaches” all my life and commend anyone who goes out of their way to find solitude, walking miles to find a beach like A-Bay where I/we would not wish to offend anyone. Noosa is an international destination and it seems everyone who visits Noosa, especially backpackers that I’ve met, know of the free beach. Everyone is born with genitalia, Matthew, and surely your “majority” of people wouldn’t deprive a few nudists from using a remote beach that’s been used for this purpose for decades as a free beach, in a free country, with freedom of speech. Aren’t we losing enough of our freedoms already? So lighten up, Matt! And open up a kiosk on A-Bay selling fig leaves, but you might need a tape measure or get out your budgie smugglers and join the Aussies who ask “How’s it hanging”, “She’ll be right, mate”, “Have another beer”. Woe on parking I WOULD like to comment about your story “Council too tight for scooters” (24 November). As a motorcycle/ scooter rider who rides to the Noosa Main beach most mornings, John O’Grady’s complaint about his parking ticket for parking on a reservation and having to park in a full car park is unfounded. If he brought himself up to speed with the Queensland Road Laws he would know that unlike Victoria where a motorcycle can park on a footpath if it doesn’t cause an obstruction, there is no such law in Queensland. Your reporter Jolene Ogle would do well to familiarise herself with the parking availability in The Hastings Street, Noosa Heads area. At the surf club there are six motorcycle parks, Hastings Street has 45 with an additional five that could be bicycle or motorcycle. Park Road has three and at the middle groin there is an area with room for another four motorcycles. Instead of complaining about motorcycle parking in Noosa Heads area, she would do well to explore how the council parking officers appear to refuse to enforce parking offences where business people are concerned. The people at U Boat Hire have a signed utility advertising the business, and an unroadworthy motorcycle usually parked on a reservation outside the business. They use this motorcycle to occupy the end parking bay while their ute is out of it. Also if she takes a drive up to Diamond Street, Cooroy, she will almost always see a number of illegally rear angle parked vehicles across both lined and unlined parallel parking area in Diamond Street, outside the RACQ and produce stores. Last week there was even an unregistered vehicle advertised for sale there. After a local told me that I had to rear angle park there, when I was the only legally parked vehicle by being parallel I first reported this to council in November 2015 and several times since then. History’s sting in the tales By Suzanne King STORYTELLERS in every culture have their folktales. Many such stories in the English language have their antecedents in French and German tales for children. These stories were told with the idea of teaching lessons to youngsters but in truth today’s fairytales have developed from quite gruesome stories. Best-selling author Kate Forsyth is researching a doctorate in the retelling of fairytales and much of her work has evolved into a fairy story of her own: her historical novel, The Wild Girl. Set during the Napoleonic wars, Bonaparte, known as “the Ogre”, is sweeping through Europe and overpowering Austria’s ancient kingdoms. In the wake of his army come unwelcome changes. French fashion and language is being adopted, the old traditions are scorned, and as the customs fade Austrian families are left in despair of their history and culture. The Wild child of the title is Dortchen, youngest daughter of the town apothecary who is so fascinated by ancient stories that she can recount them word by word. The beauty and wisdom in the old tales are qualities Dortchen articulates well and this love of storytelling leads

her to an enchantment, but not by a handsome prince but for her impoverished neighbour; a man without wealth or power but whose name will live on through the tales he preserves:

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to think smart By Hollie Harris OUR population is getting older, but a study has found the percentage of seniors with dementia is actually declining. In the study, the researchers analysed information from a nationally representative sample of about 21,000 US adults aged 65 and older who were tested for dementia from 2000 to 2012. In 2000, 11.6 percent of older adults had dementia, but that number dropped to 8.8 per cent by 2012. Although some previous US studies had suggested the prevalence of dementia was declining in recent years, those studies were not representative of the entire US population. The study's lead author Dr Kenneth Langa said the new findings added to a growing body of evidence that this decline in dementia risk was a real phenomenon. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The expected future growth in the burden of dementia may not be as extensive as once thought," Dr Kenneth Langa said. According to the National Institutes of Health, dementia is not a specific disease, but rather a group of symptoms, which can include problems with thinking and solving problems, as well as personality changes. The risk of developing these symptoms has also been linked to other factors, like education, the new study suggested. Researchers found that the people in the study who had more years of education had

a lower risk of dementia. Those with 16 years or more of education were about 70 per cent less likely to have dementia, compared with those who had less than 12 years of education. During the study period, the average number of years of education among participants increased from 12 to 13 years. More years of education may help protect against dementia in a number of ways, the researchers said. Spending more years in school may help the brainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;cognitive reserve", meaning the brain may be better able to compensate for abnormalities that occur in older age. Having more years of education can also allow people to obtain more cognitively challenging jobs, which could also help protect the brain, the researchers said. And people who have more years of education may also be more likely to exercise and eat healthy, and less likely to smoke, which are all behaviours that are linked with better brain health. Interestingly, the researchers noted that the drop in dementia prevalence occurred despite increases in the rates of certain conditions that can increase the risk of dementia: diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. The researchers said they suspect that better treatment of cardiovascular disease and diabetes may have also contributed to the decline in dementia.

EVERYTHING comes to those who wait ... even those who wait for a swell in Noosa in springtime. And so it came to pass last week, when the points fired up for the best few days since midwinter. Having spent most of the past three months elsewhere, I couldn’t claim to be as surf-starved as many, but considering the size of the crowd on Biggish Wednesday, I thought it was relatively mellow where I surfed. Photographer Ian Borland counted more than 80 people at First Point that morning, but the sweetener was that the ferocious sweep kept most of them off the take-off most of the time, leaving the way clear to sneak a few. But oh boy, I can tell you that some of us old fellers had spaghetti arms for the rest of the week! Anyway, the first good swell of the season gave us another thing to be thankful for on Thanksgiving last Thursday evening. May there be many more. Stompin’ at Freshie tonight! Tonight I’ll be celebrating the

first day of summer in Sydney with family and the crew from Panga Productions for the launch of our documentary film Men of Wood and Foam, which premieres on Foxtel’s History Channel on 14 December. The Band of Frequencies will be playing all the songs they wrote for the film’s soundtrack, and Little Pattie Amphlett will be dropping in from the 1960s to perform a guest spot of stompie-wompie tunes. Oh yeah, big night all round at the historic Freshwater Surf Club. I just wish that more of the Brookvale Six, about whom the film was made, were able to attend, but jumping on a plane is a bit beyond Billy Wallace, who is recovering from a broken hip. Joey Larkin doesn’t leave the Tweed Coast much these days, Gordon Woods is hard to get out of his harbourside penthouse, and Scotty Dillon is in lockdown in his nursing home at Coffs Harbour. And Midget Farrelly, of course, is sadly no longer with us. But Barry Bennett and Denny Keogh will be there tonight, representing the pioneers of the surfboard industry. With most of the originals now in their eighties and nineties, I’m just so glad we got the film made while they were able to contribute, and to see the end result.

Back to the Band of Freq’s, tonight will be their first live performance of a suite of songs they wrote for the film, covering musical styles that range from 1950s modern jazz through surf to acid rock and beyond. It’s a real tribute to the diversity of one of the Sunny Coast’s greatest musical assets. You can catch up with the theme song, Days of Wood and Foam, on Youtube either directly or via Facebook pages for the Band of Frequencies and the Noosa Festival of Surfing. Panga’s Shaun Cairns filmed the boys recording the song at the Tanuki Sound Lounge in Brisbane a few months back. The Freqs will be touring with the film later in the summer. Stay tuned for local dates, including a special appearance at the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing. Barbarian wins again Just when you thought William Finnegan’s Pulitzer Prize-winning surf memoir, Barbarian Days couldn’t get any more successful, it wins one of the richest awards in British publishing, the William Hill Sports Book of the Year. “That was a nice kick in the arse,” Bill emailed me from London last weekend, having just picked up a fat cheque for 28,000 pounds (I presume

WELL it was that Friday night of the year again, when a lot of our families got their first real taste of Christmas. About 6pm, hundreds of family people gathered at the Hastings Street roundabout to witness the turning on of the lights which hang from the Hastings Street Christmas tree. What followed was an hour of fun with everyone joining in. This tree ceremony was the brainchild of the then happy yank Jim Berado, and proud to say that for its entire 12-year span, the Noosa Surf Club has been one of its major sponsors. Talking of happy occasions, the management and members of the Sunshine Beach Surf Club wish to

thank all those people who supported their Ten Grand in The Hand fundraiser. The drawing of this raffle is really (dare I say it) a reason for a good old-fashioned supporter club beach party, and as usual this gesture of thanks, was really well supported. This year the happy winner was Robbie White, a Life Member of Sunshine. This was a great result as Robbie has done his bit for the club, both on the building committee and also in the area of fundraising. While on the matter of Sunshine, well done to their Under 13 to15s team which contested the recent A Mart carnival at Maroochydore, finishing in third place overall. Big carnival, tough competition; well done to all. Last weekend, the Sunshine Coast Under 13 Inter Branch representative team contested the Queensland Inter Branch Championship at Coolangat-

ta. On Friday, the pool rescue events were held, and on Saturday the surf and beach. For the ninth year in a row, the carnival was won by the Sunshine Coast team, in which both Noosa and Sunshine were well represented. The timing could not be better. On Sunday morning, Chris Grandemange and Trevor King of the Noosa Heads IRB section assessed and passed another six members for their crewies certificates. “This is good having another six members; we are in for a big Christmas and there will be a heavy workload. This weekend we will be testing another six, so an increase of 12 all up, couldn’t have come at a better time.” Noosa, Sunshine and Peregian all reported good crowds and safe surfing. While training and patrols were

underway, our competitors were very busy proudly wearing their club colours and competing at various beaches. Five Noosa boat crews travelled south to take part in the Annual Coffs Harbour Craft Carnival, and in the words of coach and sweep Davie Tomba, “It was challenging surf with plenty of good racing. We had two masters’ crews, the Emus and the Condors competing and happy to say the Emus won the final. "The Under 23 men’s finished third in their final. This was really good as the competition in this division was made up of all the crews who contested the major races in last year’s Nationals.” "A big morale booster for the newly-formed ladies Under 19 crew; racing in their maiden carnival, they won their division. Great sign for things to come.” With crews from all over Queensland and NSW, the com-

petition could not have been better; and it was right across the board,” Tomba said. Sunday morning at a Noosa Club Council meeting, following a presentation from Supporter Club Chairman, Ian Young O.A.M. Life Member, and finance officer Wally Schaller Life Member, the members voted unanimously to proceed with an internal refurbishment of the Supporters Club. During the presentation, the chairman called upon club architect Peter Conley to table drawings and information regarding the project. “By doing this, we can continue to give our members and visitors a nice and relaxing environment in which they can enjoy our Noosa hospitality. This, plus our ongoing commitment to be ever involved within the community, will enable us to give our people a club to be proud of,” the chairman said.

Plenty of fish are in the river - and into the pan THE frying pan has been firing with some good whiting over the last week, most fish have been taken on live yabbies and live worms. Flathead are thick around the entrance to Weyba Creek, and the lower parts of the system, trolling hard body lures close to the bottom has been working well, the Zerek Tango Shad is one such lure with pink and red very productive colour, also soft plastics like the Squidgie Whip Baits have done the job. Trevally and tailor are also on the bite with the higher tides in the morning the best time to make your attack, golden, big eye, and giant trevally have all been taken over the weekend. There are a few jewies starting to show up around the entrance to the lakes, Paddle vibe style profile soft plastics are working well, these lures put out plenty of vibration that the fish picks up and identifies as a bait fish in trouble.

Upriver the jacks have been firing with the best results coming from between the lakes, suspending lures and slow hopped soft plastics have produced some sensational results. If you are thinking of putting the crab pots in, we are finding the better crabs have been upriver with some nice bucks coming from around Makepeace Island. Fresh bait is the key and make sure you leave them in for at least one tide cycle. On the offshore scene, Jew have been in good numbers around the wider reefs like Chardons and North Reef. Snapper and sweetlip are in good numbers also around North and Chardons. Places like Sunshine Reef have been holding good numbers of coral trout. Live baits fished hard on the bottom is by far the best method. Getting them up before the sharks get hold of them is also a great challenge. Yellowfin, long tail and mac tuna

schools are starting to show up and have been spotted in the bay and on North Reef. Plenty of fun to be had with them on small slugs like the River2sea Sea Rocks slugs with the 14gr size working well. The reefs offshore from Double Island Point have been fishing well for cod, squire, pearl perch and red emperor. The southern beaches have again been fishing well, Sunshine Beach and Castaway Beach have fished well for whiting, bream, and dart with live worms doing the job. The odd jew has also been on the menu at night time on larger baits like mullet and tailor fillet. Whiting, dart, tailor and flathead have come from the gutters along the Noosa Northshore. Live worms are the best bait for the whiting and bream. Flathead and tailor are worth targeting using frogmouth pilchards. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures!

Surf’s up after longest wait By Hollie Harris IT may not mean a lot to the happy beach goers who swoon over Laguna Bay being a shimmering lagoon for quite some time, but those whose passion and sport is surfing, the long wait for waves is agonising. Noosa surfers have been patiently waiting and religiously checking surf cameras for anything board-worthy for the last few months. That wait was finally over last Monday when the E/NE swell from a Coral Sea trough

created a swell event which really brought Noosa back to the iconic and world famous surfing destination once again. There were lines across the bay for three days straight with solid sets remaining consistent from dawn ’til dusk. The points were packed, but there were waves for everyone as they just kept coming and coming and coming. First Point remained a fairly solid three foot from Monday to Wednesday, and gave the usual busy crowd of locals and school kids a few days of fun.

The fetch responsible for the swell event began to subside on Thursday and continued to drop off leaving the region seasonally small once again. Although the parking was a sport in itself, Noosa really felt alive last week with surfers in all directions, boards piled up around the trees, huge smiles and glowing cheeks, spectators all along the rocks and exhausted bodies coming out of the water only to run around the point for one more wave ... just in case it’s all gone tomorrow.

SWIMMING carnivals are the highlight of many children’s school years and it was no different recently when Sunshine Beach State School held their annual swim carnivals. Students competed in both the traditional stroke events and also took part in some wonderful novelty events. Swimming carnivals are a great way to witness a student’s physical and mental motivation and to encourage children to identify a challenge and try their best to achieve. Carnivals allow many students who have spent many very early mornings involved in local swim squads to showcase their talents. They also provide an avenue for all children to take part in a challenging activity. In addition it is an exciting culmination for school swimming lessons undertaken by many classes. One surfer nailed those old school S-turns, turning his waves into works of art. Some of the young kids were making mince-meat of their waves and it was interesting to see so many regulars out in the water with brand new boards. Johnsons was absolutely packed, and with good reason; Nationals was rideable all the way into the beach on a few occasions. Up and coming 18-year-old local, Connor Lyons, who is about to join the pro rankings, was getting some big airs.
