Geelong residents are likely to lose their mayoral vote, Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins has confirmed to the Indy. An “independent” Citizens’ Jury that recommended scrapping the vote had cost too much in “time, effort and money” to be ignored, she said. Gaol back in limbo after heritage rules stop sale By Luke Voogt Geelong Gaol’s future is back in doubt after Barwon Health abaondoned plans to buy the site. “The site is heritage listed and with this listing comes inherent issues for future development,” Barwon Health’s Kate Bibby told the Indy. “We currently have no need for this site beyond our current tenancy which is for car parking.” In July City Hall published a statement saying it had entered into an agreement to sell the gaol to Barwon Health. The sale failure leaves City Hall without a solution to what council administrator Kathy Alexander described in July as a “financial burden”.
“Reports commissioned by the City indicate a maintenance backlog will cost more than $1.5m and potentially up to $3m,” she said. Dr Alexander said considering gross income of the site in 2015 was $159,000, development costs would provide a significant risk for the City. The Indy asked City Hall about the gaol’s maintenance backlog, potential alternative uses and financial future in light of Barwon Health’s decision. Strategy and performance general managed William Tieppo declined to comment, other than to say the gaol was “currently in the commercialin-confidence stage”. Hanny, 76, inked for first time in honour of ‘soul mate’ Good things come to those that wait, like North Geelong’s Hanny Hoekstra who underwent her first tattoo on Thursday, aged 76. “I’ve always wanted a tattoo and now’s as good a time as any to get one,” she said. Multicultural Aged Care Service (MACS) gifted Hanny the tattoo as part of its Wishing Tree program to grant residents’ and their families’ Christmas wishes. “Bring it on,” Hanny said after learning her wish would be granted. “I came to MACS in February after having a severe stroke. I told my husband, Jim, to go and find himself another lady but he wasn’t interested. “He told me we were soul mates.” Hanny decided a tattoo with the word 'Forever’ would be a fitting celebration of their 58th anniversary on 20 December. “When I told my son, Mark, I was getting a tattoo he was shocked but just laughed and said, ‘I can’t say no because I’m not your parent’,’” Hanny said. MACS chief Joy Leggo, said Hanny deserved granting of her wish. “On admission, Hanny was quite debilitated,” Ms Leggo said. “She’s made steady progress and is now doing her make-up again or, as she would say, ‘putting her face on’, and has taken up painting as a pastime.” Jim visits every day and her two children, Debbie and Mark, are also there often to support her. The aged care centre also cared for both Hanny and Jim’s parents.

Waterfront attractions An outdoor “pop-up cinema” and a fleet of food vans will add new attractions to Geelong’s waterfront this summer, City Hall has announced. The cinema would operate at Steampacket Gardens tonight (Friday) and the following two Fridays, while the vans would be at Eastern Beach on weekends until the end of March, the City said. A $74 million construction project has continued at Simonds Stadium amid fears industrial action could halt work. Project builder Kane Constructions met CFMEU representatives at the site on Thursday morning. The union this week launched a number of industrial actions against Kane Constructions sites coinciding with the Turnbull Government’s impending reintroduction of an Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC). The Government passed the legislation through the senate on Wednesday after negotiating with crossbenchers. Federal Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson condemned the CFMEU’s “targeting” of Kane Constructions. “This sort of conduct cannot continue,” Ms Henderson said. The Indy was unable to obtain comment from the CFMEU before going to press.

And it’s all about the biff, explained their guest speaker and former umpie Frank Vergona. Frank recounted how the live telecasts of Geelong West’s matches attracted a big audience each Sunday. The VFA had a good idea why it was so popular, too, Frank said. “It was a pretty rugged competition,” he reminisced. “But I really think the association just let it go because the VFA was a ratings winner for the TV station.” Might be something for the AFL to consider as it continues sanitising its own competition.

Staying alive's number one for TAC at Carols by the Bay A Transport Accident Commission’s (TAC) Be Present road show will remind Geelong carollers this Saturday of the most important gift they can give - staying alive. The TAC will join local icon Denis Walter at Carols by the Bay, urging revellers to plan their travels with loved ones in mind. “This Christmas, let’s all look out for our friends and family and share the responsibility for keeping each other safe,” said TAC’s Samantha Cockfield. The roadshow will also give carollers an opportunity to create personalised Christmas road
safety messages on cards with photographs for family and friends. Ms Cockfield said the TAC was reaching out to all Victorians during the roadshow’s tour of Victorian carols-by-candlelight. Fatal accidents over Christmas tended to involve rural locations, high-speed zones and single-vehicle crashes, she said. Australian Transport Safety Bureau research has found that more passengers, women and children under-15 die on roads during the festive season. “It’s a busy time on our roads and there are a
lot of people travelling longer distances than they may be used to and often on unfamiliar roads,” Ms Cockfield said. She urged travellers to plan rest stops and adequate sleep. Ms Cockfield said December also meant lots of work break-ups, Christmas parties and other functions often involving alcohol. “It can often be difficult to keep track of how much alcohol you’ve consumed, so the only safe option is to totally separate drinking from driving. “If you know you’re going to be consuming any alcohol, you need to plan a safe way home.” 12331467-46-16

Now the dust has settled on Geelong’s Citizens’ Jury, other municipalities might like to consider pulling the welcome mat if the convener’s ever sent to their town. After all, NewDemocracy Foundation, an “independent, non-partisan research and development organisation” that the Andrews government appointed to conduct the jury, has left Geelong with the threat of reduced democratic representation rather than increasing it. And that’s despite some pretty pre-jury window-dressing. “We innovate in how we do democracy,” the foundation declares on its website, asking: “Can democracy be done better?” Well, according to the foundation’s Geelong jury verdict, democracy is “done better” with fewer councillors (from 13 to 11), fewer wards (12 to four), and the loss of the public mayoral vote. So less democracy is better democracy? Double Take would call a vote on that but, these days, it could probably be “done better”.

Colder temps as cool spring ends Under the Weather, by Lindsay Smail Geelong has defied official predictions to record a colder-than-average spring. November finished .7C below the 30-year average to deliver a spring result .4C colder. The figures contradict Bureau of Meteorology predictions in August of higher temperatures for spring in Geelong. November’s daily minimums were .6C colder and maximums were .8C below the 30-year averages. Only two November days exceeded 30C, with the highest, 36.2C, recorded on the 21st. The lowest overnight temperature was 6C on 19 November. November was drier than normal but failed to prevent spring surging way over the average for rain in Geelong. The region recorded around 30 per cent of its
average rain for November, with only 16mm in urban Geelong. However, spring overall was 130 per cent above the average with a total of 205mm compared to the seasonal average of 154mm. Despite the rain drying up in November, the region’s water storages hovered 85 per cent of capacity for most of the month after the downpours of September and October. November also had three days with very strong wind gusts, recording gusts to 78km/h on the 21st during a thunderstorm. A furious squall about 5pm the same day caused limited damage around Geelong but the consequences were much more serious for other parts of the state. An outbreak of ‘thunderstorm asthma’, a medical condition caused by strong downbursts and explosive pollen, contributed to nine deaths to 30 November due to breathing difficulties.

A Leopold man and a Torquay woman who saved a hockey player’s life in May have received recognition for their actions at Parliament House. Leanne Basham and Andrew Crowley leaped into action when a player collapsed during a game at Stead Park, Corio. The pair were filling in at the last minute, with Ms Basham umpiring and Mr Crowley stepping in to play. Ms Basham ran to 38-year-old Simon Millar after he collapsed. She realised he had stopped breather and asked for someone to call triple zero. Mr Crowley began CPR alongside Ms BAsham, who sent an onlooker to get a defibrillator.
Ms Basham defibrillated Mr Millar three times before his pulse returned. A few months later he discovered he was about to become a father for the first time. Ms Basham and Mr Crowley were among 16 Victorians to recieve medals from Ambulance Services Minister Jill Hennessy at the Victoria Community Hero Awards. “For a colleague, family member or complete stranger to step up in the most challenging and extraordinary of circumstances and sometimes risk their own lives, this makes them a hero in the community’s eyes," Ms Hennessy said.

Former mayor Darryn Lyons has slammed a Citizens’ Jury recommendation to scrap Geelong’s mayoral election. The result would make him Geelong’s last directly-elected mayor if Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins adopts the recommendation. “This is completely and utterly rigged,“ Mr Lyons said. “It beggars belief – the people sang out wholeheartedly that they want the directly elected mayor.” The jury of 100 residents, which consultants arranged on behalf of the government, recommended taking away residents’ mayoral vote despite surveys indicating that up to 78.5 per cent wanted direct elections. The jury recommended handing the mayoral decision back to councillors, who lost control of the decision when the previous coalition State Government gave residents the vote in 2012. An enraged Mr Lyons described the Andrews government as “incompetent megalomaniac mo-
rons” and urged residents to voice their outrage. “I call on the people of Geelong to barrage Natalie Hutchins’ email and Twitter feed to let her know what they think of taking away the direct mayor. “I’ve had heaps of text messages – I couldn’t even repeat what’s in them.” Mr Lyons accused the Government of “putting the pillow over Geelong’s head”. “They think the people of Geelong are stupid – we’re not stupid and we won’t forget. “It’s criminal what they are doing.” A Democracy in Geelong survey run in conjunction with the jury found 60 per cent support for retaining the direct mayoral election. The jury received 28 submissions of which 13 wanted the mayoral election scrapped, 10 wanted it retained and the rest left their submissions blank or unrelated to the mayor vote. Shadow local government minister David Davis called the jury process a farce. “There’s no doubt Labor is desperate to avoid a return to local democracy with a directly elected mayor,” he told the Indy last week.

Residents set to lose mayor vote By Luke Voogt The State Government is set to strip Geelong of its mayoral vote on the recommendation of a Citizens’ Jury. Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins indicated to the Indy that she intended to adopt the recommendation. “We put a lot of time, effort and money in setting up this jury to make sure it would be as independent as it could be,” she said. “Any MP to ignore a report like would do so at (their) own peril. “It was quite clear the system that had been put in place was not working.” The Government commissioned the newDemocracy Foundation to arrange the 100-member jury, which recommended scrapping the mayoral election in a close call. The jury favoured returning to the previous system of councillors choosing the mayor. Ms Hutchins said she would take the jury’s recommendation to cabinet for a decision early next year. Scrapping the vote would require a parliamentary amendment to the City of Greater Act 1993. An online Democracy in Geelong survey in conjunction with the jury found that 59 per cent of 956 respondents wanted to keep their mayoral vote. “I wouldn’t say that a 900-plus survey is representative of the communities of Geelong,” Ms Hutchins said. Last week she said the survey attracted a “huge number” of responses. A number public of figures have slammed the jury process, including former mayor Darryn Lyons and shadow local government minister David Davis who last week described it as a farce. “I think the opposition’s spokesperson for local government should have had the guts to turn

The jury progressed to another voting format to reach a super-majority, ranking each option against a five-point scale: love it, like it, live with it, lament it or loathe it. Eighty-four per cent voted in the top three categories - live with it or above - for a councillorchosen mayor. Seventy-nine per cent voted the same way for a direct election. The whole “convoluted” process was a “wank”, said shadow local government minister David Davis. “There was no majority against a directly elected mayor. It was a manufactured majority from high-paid consultants.” But Mr Walker said the process was transparent and critics had been welcome to attend. “The door was always open.” The jury also recommended a council structure of 11 councillors in four wards, with two in a central city ward and three each in the others.

Geelong’s next crop of aspiring filmmakers will premiere their creative talents at Odyssey Film Festival on Saturday night. Lara’s Griffin Jennings will join 17 media students from across the region showcasing their short films. “It’s always good to get publicity and get your film out there,” he said. “There are some really talented filmmakers across Geelong just starting their careers. If you want to see them in their early days, this is the place to be.” Griffin’s film - The Clade - begins with teenager Marcus, played by Jarred Pedersen, who discovers his dreams can predict the future. The ability makes him the target of mysterious masked cultists, who pursue him ruthlessly throughout the film. “They want to capture him and use him for their own ends,” Griffin said. “The story is essentially about him evading them.” “I like the vigilante and fugitive feel of it.”
Griffin just finished year 12 at Lara Secondary College and has applied for a Bachelor of Audio at a media institute in Melbourne. “I love music and (film) editing,” he said. “Those are the bits where I think I really excel creatively.” The 18-year-old has studied media at school for three years. He and friends recently started a Youtube channel, Not a Fanime Productions,- to promote their work. “I’ve made a fair few films,” Griffin said. “I’d love to do it as a career. If it takes off, that would be wonderful.” But Griffin was keen to avoid a gig casting actors, which, he said had been the most challenging aspect of his latest film. “Everyone’s schedules are so hectic. Put safe cars first for kids As young car buyers scour the state for their first set of wheels, it’s timely to remind them to put safety at the top of their shopping lists. Many first-car buyers and their parents would be surprised to find that dozens of used car models with potentially life-saving features like side curtain airbags and electronic stability control are available for less than $3000 (Geelong Indy, 21 November). Gone are the days when the only cars firsttime buyers could afford were old clunkers with little in the way of safety features. More jails, greater safety
Alarmists ignore our battlers
Parole should never be granted in the case of defined serious crimes. You do the crime, you do the time – all the time. No early release, no prospect, generally, of parole. This very clear message needs to be sent to such offenders. Public safety and community harmony would be greatly enhanced. State farm could grow jobs What is Victoria doing to stimulate jobs? Why are we importing fresh food when we have some of the cleanest produce worldwide? I propose that the Victorian Government set up vast fresh produce factories for world export, using solar and wind power and the desalination plant’s water to employ thousands in Geelong, Wonthaggi and other regional areas. The produce could be flown from Avalon Airport. We have all the infrastructure in place, all we need is some creative thinking. I also propose that the Government owns this asset, much as it once owned the SEC. It must not be sold off to multinationals. The profits must be used to generate revenue, provide regional jobs and generate tax credits. Workers could be trained in horticulture, permaculture and hydroponics, which would generate teaching jobs. The workforce at Hazelwood could be redeployed to this venture, stimulating the economy. The Geelong region is rapidly growing, taking the pressure off Melbourne, but jobs must be available. My concept could solve many problems and make regional Victoria productive and viable. If we don’t start using our clean resources other interests will move in, which is already happening. The time for complacency is over. We must start developing new jobs and get people employed. GEELONG Geelong’s Floating Christmas Tree will return on Friday 11 November when the City of Greater Geelong hosts Light Up Geelong, our biggest night of Christmas celebrations. Light Up Geelong will feature an impressive line-up of entertainment from 7.30pm, followed by the lighting of Geelong’s Floating Christmas Tree, a short fireworks show, and projections on City Hall. Talented Geelong artists Sophia Katos and Imogen Brough will headline Light Up Geelong, performing popular Christmas carols from 8.30pm before the Christmas tree lights up at 9.00pm. Artists performing at Light Up Geelong include the Rachel Brennan Duo, Uptown Brown and Steve Thew.
Kids will love the face painting, balloon artist, stilt walkers and of course Santa. Get into Central Geelong early to enjoy shopping and dinner before the festive entertainment begins.
Geelong’s Floating Christma s Tree will light up daily from 8.30pm to midnight. The light shows will run for approxim ately six minutes with a nine minute break.

Theatre season will be a boomer By Luke Voogt Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) has unveiled its 2017 theatre season, featuring some of our most loved performers alongside international artists. GPAC launched the Deakin University Theatre Season on Thursday with hundreds of theatre lovers gathering for a look at the 2017 line-up. Actor-comedian Colin Lane - who recently starred in the Hannie Rayson play Extinction at GPAC - returned to Geelong to host the launch. Next year GPAC will present a nine-show season featuring some unique Australian stories - some from major companies, others from small, independent producers. The season will begin with iconic Australian company Bangarra Dance Theatre’s spectacular Terrain, transporting viewers to Lake Eyre and connecting them with the country. Another Australian production, Coranderrk, tells a story from our neglected Indigenous history. The play, staring Trevor Jamieson, depicts the struggles of an Aboriginal community in their fight for self-determination in the 1880s. Melbourne Theatre Company will return with two absolute must-see works, say promoters. Theatre veteran Nancy Hayes plays one of two fiercely competitive bridge-playing grandmothers in Lally Katz’s hilarious play Minnie and Liraz. The company’s other play, What Rhymes with Cars and Girls, will bring the music of Tim Rogers to life. Hello, Goodbye and Happy Birthday, a “ground-breaking” story about two birthdays -

THE REAL THING: iconic Australian singer-songwriter Russell Morris will come to Geelong on Saturday.
Legend is The Real Thing, all right Russell Morris fans can come and see the real thing as the iconic singer-songwriter comes to the Sphinx Saturday. Morris topped the charts with The Real Thing in 1969 and had several Australian top 10 tracks in the '60s and '70s. The 68-year-old has been touring the country with his latest album, Red Dirt - Red Heart. He released the album in October 2015 and it reached 22 in the charts, showing he still had the gift of musical storytelling. Morris wrote it as a tribute to Australia’s interior, its colourful characters and its indigenous heroes. The album was the latest of three blues and roots records celebrating Australia’s history. The first album, Sharkmouth, released in October 2012, explored urban blocks and their inhabitants during the Depression years. It was the highest-selling Australian record of 2013 and picked up an ARIA award for best blues and roots album.
It reached number one in the blues charts and sixth overall, surpassing even the success of his early albums. Morris’s 2014 album, Van Diemen’s Land, went two spots better on the charts, becoming the highest charting album of Morris’s 50-year career. The album told tales of Australia’s first prison ships and union strikes, World War I and II and paddle steamers along the Murray River. Morris’ career started in September 1966, when he was 18 years old, with the formation of Melbourne group Somebody’s Image. Somebody’s Image quickly developed a strong following at Melbourne’s premier venues and then Go-Set staff writer Ian “Molly” Meldrum noticed the band. Here We Go with Sunny Cowgirls The Sunny Cowgirls – Sophie and Celeste Clabburn – will rock their way to Geelong as part of their national tour for their latest album. “We’re always looking forward to getting down that way,” said elder sister Sophie. “It’s always a really good vibe and a great crowd down there.” The Cowgirls released eighth album Here We Go in September, which Sophie described as “uptempo, toe-tapping classic Sunny Girls”. “We really wanted to get back to where we came from,” she said. Sophie first picked up the guitar at age 10, learning her first song at 11. “Basically I roped my little sister into it,” she said. “I said ‘Listen to me, we’re going to be a duo and play as the Sunny Cowgirls’.” “Celeste picked up the bass guitar and sort of taught herself.” The Sunny Cowgirls take their name from family farm Sunninghill at Dunkeld, near the Grampians. The sisters grew up in in both WA and regional Victoria, cutting their teeth performing at rodeos and shows across WA. They were in their teens when they released their debut album in 2005, after catching the eye of producers at Tamworth’s Academy of Country Music. The album Little Bit Rusty peaked at number three on the ARIA Country Charts. The two have played with numerous Aussie country greats, as well as opening for Taylor Swift in the Snowy Mountains eight years ago. “Work hard, play hard is our ethic!” Sophie said. The sisters live apart: Celeste lives in WA while Sophie lives in the small NSW town of Gunnedah. “I met my man over here at an agriculture show,” she said.
COUNTRY FUN: The Sunny Cowgirls will be back in Geelong next weekend. The arrangement works perfectly for the sisters – despite the airfares – as they prefer to write music separately. “Half the songs are hers and half are mine,” Sophie said. “Being sisters we can be a little too honest with each other."
It’s been a few years since the eight-time Golden Guitar nominated duo have been out on the road. “We’re looking forward to bringing our new show to a heap of small towns across Australia.” Up and coming country musician, Jemma
Beech, has been opening for the Cowgirls on their latest tour. She will join them again when they play at the Gateway Hotel tonight. “She’s doing a great job – country crowds just love her,” Sophie said.

Buzz from song tradition The chorale will perform Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols, a collection of songs in old English. It will then perform the “uniquely Australian” Southern Star, a musical rendition of iconic cartoonist Michael Leunig’s poems. Christopher Willcock, who created the music for the piece, will be in the audience, Jane said. “No pressure - I hope that we will do it justice because it’s a very lovely piece of music. Geelong Chorale will burst into song this Saturday in the 50-year tradition of its yearly Christmas concert. “It’s probably been going for as long as the chorale has,” said singer Jane Bashiruddin. About 35 voices will fill the halls of Wesley Uniting Church during the concert, for the love of music, Jane said. “Most of us like to share whatever gifts we have." The chorale creates its own sound, accompanied only by a single harpist - Jacinta Dennett. “It’s very uplifting,” Jane said. “Most people get a real buzz out of it.”

SPORT Mixed bag of results for Cats in Twenty20 games LOCAL CRICKET by Jim Timberlake With Premier cricket moving into its Twenty20 phase last weekend, the Geelong Cricket Club had a mixed set of results, defeating Ringwood on Saturday, before going down to Northcote on Sunday. With Aaron Finch called into the state side, the Cats at least had Big Bash star Jake Reed at their disposal. He opened the bowling and went for just 12 runs from his 4 overs, picking up a wicket along the way. Matthew Gunther returned the best figures, claiming 2/18 as they held their hosts to just 5/107 from their 20 overs. In reply, the run chase started disastrously, as the top order crashed to 3/25 and then 5/47. However, a mature knock of 35 not out from Luke Inglis saw Geelong cruise to a six wicket win. Returning to Kardinia Park on Sunday, Geelong won the toss and batted first, but Eamonn Vines was the only batsman that looked capable of a decent store, the skipper continued his good recent form with 51 in his side's total of 124. Early wickets were the key, and when Jake Reed claimed the first with just six runs on the board, the boys were up and about. But from there, it was one way traffic as Northcote enjoyed a 102-run partnership to run out dominant winners. This weekend sees another double header, firstly against Essendon at Windy Hill tomorrow, before backing up on Sunday at home against Carlton. The team will be looking to win both and
continue their recent improvements. In the Geelong Cricket Association, a tantalising top of the table clash is scheduled at Queens Park as the undefeated Newtown & Chilwell host East Belmont in a two day clash. Newtown & Chilwell have been in magnificent form, smashing Lara last game, and although they couldn’t quite achieve an outright result in the second innings, they did enough to show they are a genuine chance for this season's flag. Englishman Jordan Clark has been the star so far, but the form of emerging gun George Chisolm has been equally as impressive. But it’s the new-found depth that has also stood out, with players such as Jackson Davis and Shane Franklin also enjoying career best seasons. East Belmont though are always hard to beat, they enjoy an arsenal of batsmen, as well as the premier bowler in the competition in Dave Lineen, who took seven wickets last game to make it 17 from the last three. The Lions would have considered themselves fortunate to get the points against Geelong City last week, the Sharks had looked gone for all money at 9/107 in pursuit of 203, but a magnificent innings by veteran Adam Marsland saw them fall just two runs shorts. With Becker Nguyen due back from work commitments, and coach Chris Williams nearly back to full fitness after a nasty broken leg a year ago, the Lions will be looking to assert themselves on the contest from ball one. But while in the previous few seasons, the Two Blues would have been daunted by the prospect, this new group will be
chomping at the bit to prove their doubters wrong and claim another big scalp. The Dragons haven’t missed a beat so far, and will deservedly start favourites, but if they don’t bring their A-game here, they could be a big chance to lose their first game of the season. Cats more than keen to sign up versatile young guns Geelong Football Club has recruited rookies Jack Henry, Zach Guthrie, Jamaine Jones and Sam Simpson to round out the Cats’ 2017 list. “These four players performed well through the year and now have an opportunity to step up to the rookie list,” said recruiting manager Stephen Wells. Henry, a 191cm midfielder, kicked 21 goals for the Geelong Falcons and made the Victoria Country squad for the under-18 national championships. Defender Zach Guthrie will join brother Cameron at the Cats after finishing runner-up in the Calder Cannons best and fairest. Jones played with the North Ballarat Rebels in the TAC Cup and senior football in the Hamden league, where he earned inter-league selection. Rangy winger Simpson is the son of former Cat Sean Simpson. He impressed with the Geelong Falcons late in the TAC Cup season. Geelong also added six players to its 2017 playing list at the AFL’s national draft last week: Brandan Parfitt, Tom Stewart, Esava Ratugolea, Quinton Narkle, Timm House and Ryan Abbott. “We selected a good mix of players who play a variety of positions, which we think is important for our list,“ Wells said. Small forward and midfielder Parfitt played for North Adelaide’s reserves and Under 18 teams, averaging 25 possessions and four tackles a game. He represented Northern Territory in the Under 18 championships and won All Australian honours in 2015. Stewart, a 190cm defender, impressed at VFL level for Geelong, finishing second in the best and fairest and earning selection in the VFL team of the year. He played under assistant coach and former star defender Matthew Scarlett at South Barwon, where he picked up two premiership medals. Greater variety of fish on offer ON THE BITE by Chris Pitman Clifton Springs has quickly become a hot spot for anglers chasing a huge variety of species in the one outing. Anglers drifting slowly in 3m to 4m off Hermsley Road had little difficulty bagging squid over the past week. Whiting were on the chew a few hundred metres further out, responding well to fresh squid or pippie baits. Tackleworld Geelong’s Michael Moore launched from Clifton Springs on Monday morning for a nice mixed bag of pinkies, squid and flathead caught near the spoil ground off Sands Caravan Park. ANSA hosted a competition for the whole of Port Phillip Bay last weekend, with a wide mix of species weighed in. Competitors caught flathead to 2.138kg, snapper to 5.794kg and other species including trevally, gummy shark and Australian salmon. Barry Wood made another trip to Indented Head where drifting in the deeper water produced several flathead to 44cm. Corio Bay gave soft plastic anglers the chance to bank pinkies to 50cm along with the odd flathead. Focussing on areas with have heavy structure in at least a few metres of water worked best. Queenscliff hosted some excellent fishing for silver trevally, although Adam Van Der Lugt encountered a hot bite of salmon instead when he spent a few hours casing soft plastics in the harbour entrance on Sunday. Anglers who spun from the rock platforms along the Surf Coast also had little difficulty landing salmon. The average size was down but the numbers of fish still made for fast-paced sessions. Freshwater anglers had a ball at the crater lakes west of Geelong. Bradley Cox arrived at Lake Bullen Merri early Saturday morning to walk the margins while casting lures. He landed a Chinook salmon of 65cm and 2.28kg that put up an outstanding fight. Bradley also went on to land some smaller salmon that also took his hardbody lures. Of note were the boils on the surface where salmon were chasing up schools of minnow. Lake Purrumbete still produced the odd large brown trout for anglers slow-trolling Daiwa Double Clutch lures along the east bank at first and last light. Lake Elingamite fished well for rainbow trout for anglers trolling shallow-diving hard-body lures like Tassie devils. Michael Evans put in a few hours casting lures at Wurdee Boluc Reservoir, banking a well-conditioned brown trout of 50cm on an Ecogear Powershad. Michael also managed to land a 42cm redfin on a Norries Wasaby Spoon. Next week should produce good fishing at Clifton Springs again, while freshwater fishos could do well at Wurdee Boluc and Lake Bullen Merri.
