Pakenham Central www.caseycardiniakids.com.au
By Leah Henzen, Lakeside Psychology Psychologist (specialising In Body Image Difficulties and Eating Disorders) Very young children have an innocent love for their bodies. You see it in their fascination upon discovering their tiny fingers and toes. You see it when they first recognise their reflection and beam back at it. You see their body love through their enormous grins when they realise they have managed to coordinate, balance and move all at the same time to take their first steps. Over the next few years a child’s love for their body grows. It can be seen through their joyful movements: handstands, cartwheels, skipping, hopping, running, running and running! Through creative dressing and facepainting. Through curious touching and poking. Very little kids love their bodies and it is so beautiful to see in a world where body hatred and shame is rife. Unfortunately, this body love is short lived for most of our children. Recent research shows that over 50 per cent of girls aged between 5 and 12 years want to lose weight, and over 70 per cent of adolescents are unhappy with their body shapes. So what happens in such a short space of time to cause this dramatic shift in young people’s experience of their bodies? What can we as parents, carers, teachers, aunts, uncles and friends do to help children capture their natural body love and never let it go?
Capturing the love The world in which we are currently raising our children in is more obsessed with appearance than ever before. But on top of that most parents and most grandparents were also raised in a society that emphasised appearance above most things. This multigenerational effect can make it difficult to step back and observe factors that may be contributing to our children developing poor body image, but to do that is the first step in helping prevent it. Here are some things to consider.
How we talk about our bodies and the bodies of those around us: If we are to help our children hold onto their love for their body we need to demonstrate to them an acceptance and non-judgemental view of all body shapes and sizes – and this of course starts with our own body. We all have days (unfortunately for some this is more like weeks, months or years) where we feel down about our appearance. But it is times like these
that our children are most vulnerable to developing ideas that our worth is dependent on how we look. So it is so important that even if we feel uncomfortable with our own body or body shape we don’t allow our children to see or hear this. This includes never allowing your children to hear you criticising your appearance or speaking about dieting or feelings of guilt or shame for eating certain foods, never connecting exercise with attempts to change appearance and never talking about other people’s weight, weight loss or weight gain within their earshot. Instead try to only let your children hear you talking positively about your own and others bodies. Positive talk about our bodies may be easiest in the form of appreciating the things our bodies allow us to do and nurturing our bodies as a way of thanking or looking after them. For example it’s a great message for your child to hear something like “I’m going to have a long bath tonight to give my legs a big rest; they worked so hard for me today walking all the way around the lake”. Similarly, by talking to your children about all the wonderful things their body allows them to do you begin to build in them an appreciation for the function of their body and not just for the way it looks. For example if your child loves to jump on a trampoline you could talk with them as they jump about “gosh your legs are strong, look how high they are jumping, your arms are doing a great job knowing where to put themselves to help you stay balanced, and I love watching your cheeks working so hard to keep that big smile on your face!” Follow this up at times such as getting dressed or taking a bath by helping your child think about things they may wish to thank their body for that day (e.g. thank you hands for holding my spoon so I could eat my ice-cream, and thank you tongue for licking it up!”). If we can spend more time talking to our children about the wonderful things their body can do, and less time commenting on how “cute”, “pretty”, “spunky” they look, we help them keep a love for their bodies natural abilities.
Acknowledge and celebrate difference in appearances: As well as being body loving, young children are curious and notice things around them that we as adults often overlook. For this reason you can be sure that they will notice differences in the way people look and more often than not they will point these out at some of the most uncomfortable times for us as adults.
The key to managing this is to openly allow this curiosity. Children are normally only making observations and not attaching cruelty or judgement the way an adult might. For example a child who says to his mum “Look at that fat man over there,” is simply noticing a bigger man than he is used to seeing, just as he might say “Mum look at that huge mountain” on a drive through the country. How we respond to these comments tells our children a lot about what it means to look a certain way. If we were to say “shhh don’t say things like that, that’s nasty”, the child learns there is something to be ashamed of or embarrassed about if you are fat. But if we respond with “yeah he is fat isn’t he and it looks like he likes riding his bike like you do, too, doesn’t it?”, we simply acknowledge the observation while also connecting our child with the person in a way they may relate to them. We can also be pro-active about this, knowing that to our children our opinions and beliefs are the most important in the world. So why not when we’re out and about make comments like “I love how every person grows so differently. Can you see some really tall people, some really short people, some skinny people and some big people? And then there are people in between. We are lucky to have so many different shaped people in our world.” This could be followed with talking about all the different strengths and abilities different body shapes allow.
Provide a balanced diet of a wide variety of foods and don’t label them as good or bad. In order to allow a child to hold onto body love it is essential to show them that you are comfortable to let their body grow in the way that is right for them – without fear of it growing “too big” or not growing big enough. To allow this to happen provide your child with three meals and two or three snacks composed of a variety of different food groups per day and prevent grazing between each meal and snack. Present the food you choose for them matter-of-factly, without any discussion around what they “should” eat or what would be “good” for them and allow them to eat as much or as little of this food as they choose. Sometimes you may feel shocked by how much your child has eaten, but at other times be surprised to see they have eaten hardly anything at all. Don’t worry about this, if children are given regular opportunity’s to eat a wide variety of foods, without being pressured the amount they eat will
balance out across a few days or a week to be the right amount for what their body needs, to grow into the shape it is meant to be.
Reduce access to harmful television, media and toys and teach about unrealistic images. Media, television shows and even many toys and games can make it really difficult for children to hold onto body love and not feel that their worth is somehow dependent on their body shape and appearance. Many main stream television shows, music videos and even advertisements and toys themselves perpetuate the idea that a particular body shape (thin, for girls and lean and muscular for boys) is ideal and leads to feelings of happiness, success and popularity. If parents can be on the lookout for these messages and prevent their children from being exposed to this too often it is helpful in preventing them from also developing these beliefs. It is impossible however to shield our children from all of these messages that are constantly on television and radio, so it’s important as our children get older to help them understand the unrealistic nature of the messages and the techniques used to make models, actresses and dancers appear to look a certain way. We can teach our children about photo-shopping, airbrushing, the use of camera angles and lighting and extensive make-up artistry by showing them clips such as the Dove Evolution Body Clip on You Tube and helping them to consider how many people in their life look like the people they see on television etcetera. We can help them understand that this image is not a realistic one and that in the “real world” we come in all different shapes and sizes and can all be very happy in whatever body we live in. As summer approaches body image dissatisfaction is often amplified for adults who fear wearing less clothing and allowing more of their body to be seen. But for the sake of our children and their chance of holding onto or reclaiming body love if they’ve began to lose it, maybe we can make a big effort this year, to try to enjoy all our body allows us to do in the warmer months. Let’s swim with our children and be thankful our body allows us to, let’s stroll along the beach in our shorts and T-shirt while eating ice-cream and holding our little ones hand, let’s lay in the sun and enjoy the feeling of it on our skin knowing we too can work on loving our bodies and by doing so forge a path for our children and their children to capture body love for the rest of their lives.

SUMMER 2016 5
Bedding down those By Jade Glen DECIDING to transition your child from their cot to a toddler’s or single bed can be a huge decision for parents. You may have a good sleep routine and be (hopefully) enjoying a solid night’s sleep. What if taking away the familiar cot and introducing a new bed upsets the apple cart? You may be concerned that your child will climb out of bed and refuse to go to sleep, or that they will sleep but roll and fall out of bed in the middle of the night. Packing away the cot is also a very sure sign that your little one is not so little any more. Casey’s expert maternal child health nurse (MCHN) team recommend parents transition their child between two to three years of age. “Exactly when, depends on a parent’s preference, cultural practices, safety concerns and available resources. “Safety is the main reason; when a child is old enough to climb out of a cot they are at increased risk of injury from falling.” To make the transition as smooth as possible, Casey’s MCHN team recommend that parents ensure their child’s bedtime routine stays the same. “Place a familiar comfort toy or item
sweet dreams
in the bed and encourage your child to be involved in choosing appropriate bedding. “Parents may choose to take extra precautions to enhance safety such as positioning the bed onto a wall at one side and using an appropriate toddler bed rail on the exposed side. Having a soft floor covering in place (in case the child rolls out) is also a sensible option.” If your child does climb out of their bed or come out of their bedroom when they should be going to sleep, the best response is to quietly take the child back to their bed and resettle them. If they are scared and need some reassurance, some comfort and a night light may help. If you are after some extra guidance to help make the transition from the cot, the City of Casey offers free monthly Early Years Information sessions at various sites across the city. These sessions run for 90 minutes and are facilitated by council staff in the Early Years program. Topics include ‘Toddlers and Sleep’, ‘Fussy Eating’, ‘Toddler Behaviour’ and ‘Toilet Training’. Children are welcome to attend. Families can ring the City of Casey maternal and child health central booking number 9705 5590 to book into any of these sessions or speak to their maternal and child health nurse at their next appointment.

Make
'listening games' an early choice
“Huh?” “What mum?” “Did you say something?” Sometimes it can be hard to tell if your child has selective hearing, or if there really is a problem that needs to be addressed. The solution is simple: book a hearing test. Casey Hearing audiologist and Dangerous Decibels educator Khatija Halabi said parents should get their children tested as soon as they are concerned about their hearing or speech and language development. Children who have middle ear effusion or ear infections should also get their hearing checked for monitoring purposes. Khatija also recommended that children be tested before they go to school. A doctor’s referral is not needed. “Hearing loss can affect children’s speech, language and academic
development. Difficulty with hearing can impact on their communication, socialisation, and extra-curricular activities such as playing sport or music,” Khatija said. “The first test should occur when the child is between nine and 18 months, as this is the age that spoken language is acquired. This test will confirm that children have adequate hearing for speech and language development. The next test should be done at the age of three years or before children begin kindergarten. At this age children usually tolerate headphones so tests can obtain ear specific information. At the age of five or six years (before starting school) a test will ensure children have adequate hearing for educational purposes.” Casey Hearing tests kids as young as seven months, and Khatija – who has nearly 20 years working with children – makes the experience fun.
DID YOU KNOW 1IN 6 AUSSIE KIDS HAVE EXPERIENCED EYE PROBLEMS?*
“When testing young children, I don’t say they have come for a hearing test, rather they have come to ‘play listening games.’ My testing style depends on the personality of the child, their anxiety levels and attention span. I also need to take into account other difficulties that they may be presenting with. I make my ‘listening games’ fun,” Khatija said.
management, and Dangerous Decibels.
Khatija tests toddlers up to two years of age by presenting sound through speakers and reinforcing their response with a puppet. Children older than two participate in play audiometry which means once they have heard the sound they need to do something, such as put a peg in a board or build a tower.
“Dangerous Decibels builds on students’ knowledge, and an important outcome is it allows them to make informed decisions about hearing safety and to share that information with those around them.”
For older children, Khatija also includes speech discrimination testing. Besides hearing tests, Casey Hearing also provides Auditory Processing Assessments, fitting of swim plugs, either pre-fit or custom made, wax-
“Dangerous Decibels is a hearing conservation education program, directed to schools. This program has been very well received as it fits in with the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) curriculum for science. The sessions are interactive and engaging,” Khatija said.
Khatija said good hearing was extremely important in children’s development and urged parents wanting more information to phone Casey Hearing on 9037 7010 or email at caseyhearing1@gmail.com. Casey Hearing is also on Facebook at www. facebook.com/caseyhearing1/ 12324465-Ld49-16

Help for mums to
Straight shooting on a better
bite
Having straight teeth is not just about having a great smile. Crooked teeth can actually lead to several problems. Specialist Orthodontist Dr Ed Karim from Straight Smiles in Pakenham explains. Why should teeth be straight? No doubt that people are more attracted to straight, uncrowded, brighter and wider smiles but there is actually more to it than just good looking teeth. While better looking teeth and smiles are also part of the self-image that can affect self-esteem and quality of life, when teeth are overcrowded, there might be inaccessible areas for optimal cleaning which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. These teeth will suffer discolourations and quick calculus
(tartar) build ups that can re-appear so soon after the dentist’s professional cleaning and scaling. In these situations, there is a risk that the bone level supporting the teeth can recede permanently leaving what is called ‘black triangles’. Crowded teeth mostly sit in an unprotected bite causing a big problem called “Tooth wear”. Tooth wear is slow but irreversible process that makes the teeth sensitive, break easier and teeth will look like they are chipped or look shorter. One of the early problems that I see daily is the deep bite which one of its extreme types is the traumatic bite. A traumatic bite can affect the longevity of the teeth and some may lose their front teeth if untreated (I spoke to a woman recently who was concerned that her daughter would lose her front teeth and end up with false teeth like her mother). Early detection of orthodontic needs can help in avoiding extended time and complexity for future treatment like removal of adult teeth or in extreme cases corrective jaw surgery. Kids are much more adaptable and accepting to orthodontic treatment when compared to adults allowing early intervention with all the benefits that comes with it. For more information or to book a free consultation session/assessment call Straight Smiles in Pakenham on 5941 5188.
keep on smiling By Dr Jade Sun, Of Sun Dental As many of my patients know I’m expecting my first child in December. Having experienced the highs and lows of pregnancy recently, I thought now is an excellent time to discuss dental health for expectant mums. Every pregnancy is different, and there are many things to be considered in looking after yourself and your child. Ideally you should look to ensure that you are in good dental health prior to becoming pregnant, however sometimes our little bundles of joy aren’t planned. There is no need to avoid dental treatment while pregnant, while we look to minimise exposure to X-rays, you can be reassured that a single dental X-ray involves less radiation exposure than a flight from Melbourne to Sydney. Unless there are other complications it is better to address your immediate dental needs than to wait until after pregnancy. We don’t want to be leaving you in pain or with an active infection while you are pregnant. Your dentist will speak to your GP or obstetrician if there are any concerns. If you are suffering from prolonged bouts of nausea and vomiting this can weaken the enamel of your teeth. Rinsing your mouth with water, or
mouth wash if you prefer, immediately after will minimise damage. It’s important that you don’t immediately brush your teeth after vomiting, as this will further damage the enamel. Wait at least half an hour after a bout of nausea to brush your teeth. This will allow sufficient time for your saliva to neutralise the acids in your mouth and avoid abrasion damage to your teeth. You may want to use a product such as Tooth Mousse to help strengthen and protect your teeth. Some mothers will experience pregnancy gingivitis, the most noticeable symptom being bleeding or inflamed gums. It is important you maintain excellent oral hygiene if this occurs, continue brushing around your gums, and flossing. Maintain your six monthly or otherwise recommended visits to your dentist. Most importantly if you are concerned about anything, call your dentist or speak to your obstetrician. As I’ve come to realise, pregnancy has it’s own unique set of challenges and hiccups that don’t need to be complicated by dental health issues. I look forward to returning to see my patients in February, for all the expectant mums out there I wish you the best of luck. To book an appointment call Sun Dental in Pakenham on 5940 4988.

y p a r e h t Salt relief By Lia Spencer
Hay fever and allergies are common this time of year, but other pesky conditions such as colds, flus, eczema and asthma can still effect people of all ages whether its rain or shine outside. Salt therapy can help. The natural and non-invasive therapy helps to relieve the symptoms of a wide range of respiratory and skin conditions. It is a natural anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antihistamine and is designed to relieve the symptoms of a condition and work in conjunction with existing medication, resulting in even greater relief. Salts of the Earth franchise owner Andrew Davey said salt therapy could help everyone from newborns to the elderly, and no referral was needed. “Basically people come in and we have a consultation with them. They know what conditions they have, we don’t diagnose them, we help with symptom relief,” he said. “We do over 300 bookings a week, and we see a lot of kids. The youngest child we have seen was two days old
and they were congested after birth.” Pharmaceutical grade salts are ground into minute particles that become airborne when dispersed into the salt room, relieving inflammation and loosening congestion to allow easier and improved breathing. The salt particles also help to open up the airways, increase oxygen intake and cleanse the airways of smoke, dust, pollutants and other allergens. When the salt lands on the skin it also helps to relieve sore, flakey, red and irritated skin caused by skin conditions. The kids’ room is designed to be relaxing, yet entertaining. The ground is covered in salt for the kids to play in like a sand pit. The lights are dimmed and the salt lights offer a subtle, calming glow. There is also a television and books to keep the kids amused. Mr Davey said that consistency was important when it came to salt therapy. “It’s not a case of coming to Salts of the Earth once and being cured. We recommend management plans to help with symptom relief,” he said. To book a consultation or to learn more about award-winning Salts of the Earth, visit www.saltsoftheearth.com.au

But if you do experience sunburn, or have a mole or pigmented lesion on your skin that looks different to others, it’s best to get your skin checked. If a pigmented lesion on skin looks different to all the others and just doesn’t seem to fit in it is called an ‘ugly duckling’. It may be a melanoma so anyone who finds one is urged to get it checked as soon as possible. Even if it has been there for years, it could still be a melanoma. Some melanomas grow very slowly. They change slowly over many years, so that the patient does not recognise them as unusual. Neither does the patient’s friends or relatives or regular health professionals. Sometimes, a fresh pair of eyes is required to spot them. Sometimes, looking back at old photos will reveal a definite change in a skin lesion. And as always, remember to slip, slop slap and don a hat. For further information contact Sun Patrol Clinic, 48 Van Der Haar Avenue, Berwick. Phone 9769 3358.

with you MANY mums often neglect their own needs to take care of their children’s. But getting in some ‘me-time’ is important. And the rest of the family may agree. Have you heard of the sayings ‘Happy wife means happy life’ or ‘Happy mum means happy bub?’ If you want to relax, feel good and look great stop in at Australian Skin Clinics at Fountain Gate who specialise in a range of skin treatment services. Even expectant mothers and new mothers can benefit, as many often suffer skin breakouts due to hormonal changes. The clinic can help battle this skin problem with its famous nine-step microdermabrasion on an ongoing basis without an active peel. Australian Skin Clinics also offer other services including laser hair removal, anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers and a range of high performing active skin care products that are designed to provide clients visible results. However, they do not provide laser treatments, Fractional RF, cosmetic injectables and mediaesthetic peels to those expecting or breastfeeding as client’s safety is their highest priority. Play day i s a By Jade Glen My toddler and I attend a local playgroup once a week and I don’t know what I would do without it. It’s a chance for my little one to play with some new toys and for us to get out of the house and interact with other local parents and children. It’s a social outlet for both of us – I can have a coffee and exchange stories from the trenches with other mums, while my daughter can socialise with kids her age. Through the playgroup we have learnt new songs, tried out new activities and my daughter has been able to try her tiny hand at some more messy craft activities that I probably would never have thought to set up at home. With each weekly session costing just a few gold coins and a piece of fruit, I think it is worth its weight in gold. And, according to Playgroups Victoria, attending a regular playgroup has long-term benefits for children and parents. A 2016 Telethon Kids Institute study found that children who attend playgroups prior to school are half as likely to have developmental vulnerabilities when they start primary school.
getaway
Playgroup Victoria CEO Danny Schwarz said more than 30,000 families attended about 1500 registered playgroups across the state. “Parents benefit significantly through their participation and involvement in playgroup, particularly in building social and community connections,” he said. “This strengthens the integration of communities’ early years services, enabling a smooth transition along the continuum from first-time parent groups to playgroup, kinder and school.” Mr Schwarz said every playgroup was unique with activities ranging from storytime, singing, craft, drawing, active play, sensory play, music and dancing. To find a nearby playgroup visit www.playgroup.org.au/ findaplaygroup and enter a suburb or postcode. Playgroup Victoria recommends that parents and their children try out two or three groups before deciding which playgroup is best. If there are no relevant playgroups in the area parents can start their own. All they need are a few interested families, a place to meet, and some toys and equipment. For more information and assistance starting and letting other people know about a new playgroup, call Playgroup Victoria on 1800 171 882.
The importance of play ' for a child s development is well established, indeed, play is considered so important for childhood development that it has been recognised by the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights as a basic right of every child.

A DEVESTATING 280 people drowned in Australia last year, according to a 2016 report released by the Royal Lifesaving Society, and that does not included those who were left permanently disabled or injured from a near drowning. A child is 88 per cent less likely to drown if they have received some sort of formal swimming lessons. Paul Sadler Swimland teaches important skills to help prevent these tragedies. “In the summer months, children are naturally exposed to the water more regularly. Parents often believe their children have a level of competency but, like everything else, their skills may have deteriorated if they have not had regular practice,” said Andrew Jeffrey, manager of Paul Sadler Swimland, Narre Warren. “We teach children life saving skills such as treading water, safety circles and deep water recovery.” Though Paul Sadler Swimland begins teaching kids swimming
lessons at four months of age, but it is never too late to learn. “The earlier a child has lessons, the earlier they learn life saving skills and a respect for the water, but it’s never too late,” Mr Jeffrey said. “Everyone living in Australia should learn to swim, as we are surrounded by water. We offer lessons at all levels from beginners thorough to advanced squad and groups and private classes.”

SO you’re pregnant. Congratulations! You now share your body with a little growing human and have to give up a few of your favourite things – like those beloved soft cheeses and glasses of bubbly.
“Yoga teaches us about ourselves and our bodies and encourages us to trust the natural processes of the body. Yoga can help us feel strong both mentally and physically and help build endurance.”
But that doesn’t mean you have to forfeit exercise.

Pre-natal yoga is the perfect solution for women who want to stay fit, healthy and prepare for the birth of their baby.
life
Whilst pre-natal yoga does not guarantee a short or easy labour, the breathing techniques, various poses and mindfulness practices have helped many women during birth, recovery and with motherhood.
DOES running in the heat sound like your cup of tea? What about hiking with a baby strapped to your back? Do your kids squirm every time you tell them to get outside and play?
Rachel Foster, senior yoga teacher, lecturer and mentor at Glow Clinic, in Berwick, said pre-natal yoga had a heap of benefits for mums-to-be ... it improves fitness and stamina, promotes emotional-well-being, and improves balance and co-ordination. It is also a useful technique to help with pain management, allowing the woman to focus and relax during labour.
It can be difficult to get – and stay – motivated when it’s hot outside, but it’s important to mental and physical health to stay active at all stages at life.
Rachel said women didn’t need to have any prior yoga experience before participating, but they were advised to wait until the 12 to 14 week stage of pregnancy and have the green light from their doctor or obstetrician. “We have students come from different backgrounds, some experienced yogis and some who have never done yoga before in their lives and we are able to cater to both groups. A lot of woman experience yoga for the first time pre-natally as many medical professionals are recognising the benefits and recommend women attend at this time,” Rachel said.
If your kids are more interested in their Xbox than the sandpit, or you’re feeling time poor or unmotivated yourself, we have the perfect solution. Check out the following ways to be fit and have fun at all stages of life.
Once the mum welcomes her bub, and is given approval from their doctor or obstetrician, they can continue at Glow Clinic with post-natal Mum and Mums and Bubs Classes, aimed at incorporating practices aimed at baby, then practices for mum and then a coming together of both. “We are qualified to work with women with health conditions and complaints and women often experience a lot of relief with regular practice.” At the classes, women will learn different breathing (pranayama) techniques, relaxation and mindfulness practices as well as poses to help with strength, both physically and mentally. “We also teach women that this is a time to start to ‘let go’ of expectations about themselves and to begin to welcome the changes that birth and

“Our post-natal classes are quite gentle to begin and we gradually rebuild strength as the body begins to heal. It’s about gently rehabilitating the body and building the relationship between mother and baby,” Rachel said. “Babies respond really well to the massage techniques we share and they love hearing their mums sing. It’s a great opportunity for mums and babies to spend some time together with no distractions and to develop the bond between mother and child.”

As mums we constantly put everyone else ' s needs ahead of our own . . .
e sss oonn fif itt nnes
By Lia Spencer Kids aren’t the only ones who may need encouragement to get active. Do you have a new bub or small child and feel time poor or just unmotivated to get or stay fit? Then personal training may be the perfect option. Rachel Thorne, director of Pakenhambased Keegan Thornhill Personal Training (KTPC), is here to help. The transformation coach is a mother of two who herself lost 40 kilos. She urges mums to make themselves, their goals and their needs a priority and said that a happy mum means happy kids. “As mums we constantly put everyone else’s needs ahead of our own, forgetting that before children we used to be an individual with needs and dreams.” “The biggest excuse I hear is that mums are too busy with kids, work, etc. As a mum of two under five who runs her own business, my response is that there is always time.”
Rachel Thorne and client Steph Schultz.
Rach offers her clients a weekly one-on-one personal training session, monthly food guide and training program along with a monthly body fat test and weekly weigh in. A huge playroom caters to those who want to bring their children along to their weekly check in and sessions.
Programs can either be tailored to the gym or home and can be done in as little as 30 to 45 minutes, three days a week to allow for mums who are busy. Plenty of women have had weightloss success thanks to Rach, including Cat, a mum of two under four-years-old who lost eight kilos in 12 weeks by changing her food habits and going to the gym three days per week. Steph Schultz lost four kilos in four weeks. Steph had lap band surgery so is eating smaller meal portions, exercising and having daily check ins to keep stay on track. Rach said beginning a weightloss journey could be scary and daunting, but is extremely empowering. “It’s not easy, it takes hard work and dedication. But as a coach I do everything I can to help these women achieve their inner dreams and offer a level of understanding most other trainers can’t as they have never been through this type of journey themselves,” she said. “My best piece of advice to mums wanting to start a transformation journey is to just do it and do it now. When you are feeling the urge to start you have to embrace that motivation and get going – motivation flees, so when it comes you have to ride the wave. Rach has offered an eight-week online coaching package, normally worth $199.99, for the special price of $149.95 to Casey Cardinia Kids readers. ' Age n cy s fo cu s o n
local talent
By Lia Spencer
Sprouting up to almost six foot tall at the age of 12, with more legs than body and a mane of natural golden hair, Spunkz Management director Tanya Djukic spent most of her life being told she should be a model. Instead of pursuing a life in modelling she decided to follow in her family’s careerorientated footsteps to study a marketing and media degree. But at the age of 18, Tanya was signed by Melbourne high-fashion Agent ‘Giant Management’ who provided work across the globe with an impressive list of sports superstars and Hollywood celebrities including Liam Hemsworth, Nicholas Cage, Rose Byrne, Asha Keddie, Buddy Franklin, Mark Philippoussis, Erika Heynatz and Michael Schumacher. The depth of experience set the foundation for Tanya’s future as a talent agent for people of all ages. Cranbourne boy Dominic was discovered by Spunkz.
“Having worked with Victoria Police for 11 years, security and privacy are also high priorities of mine – my ethical and media qualifications, combined with my maternal instincts and life experience in front and behind the camera meant starting my own Children’s Agency was a no-brainer.” Tanya said that moving to Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs 13 years ago made her realise how much potential the growth corridor had. “My goal was to create a cost-effective agency that would open opportunities to genuine, honest, reliable, talented and diverse people who are excited and grateful to be involved in this industry. Spunkz is not just about a look, but having charisma. Spunkz strive to represent a true depiction of Australia’s diverse ethnicities, sizes, talents and skills.” Within the first six months of Spunkz Management, the clients were so excited by the quality of talent Tanya represented that they urged her to find adults to represent as well.

“After having two beautiful children of my own, I started regularly being cast in mother roles. I think I have been ‘pseudo’ mother for dozens of different children over the years. Some of my regular clients would start inviting me to help them cast my ‘fake’ children, which made me realise there was
a need for an agent who had extensive on-set experience working with kids and knew how to pick appropriate children. Someone the industry could trust with their judgement and someone parents could also feel comfortable around, knowing that their agent had their child’s best interests at heart,” Tanya said.

“Our expansion to represent real families and adults meant Spunkz are one of the rare agencies in Melbourne who represent talent of all ages, all abilities, from newborn babies to highly qualified actors, and a wide variety of opportunities.” Due to her reputable experience in the industry, Tanya was able to open doors for Spunkz talent to audition for professional feature films such as Pirates of the Caribbean, The Dressmaker, The Light Between Oceans and Spin Out.
Tanya Djukic
She has secured her talent modelling gigs for labels such as Target, Bardot, Mooks, Bonds and many other brands. She’s found talent for professional theatre productions such as The Sound of Music, Madame Butterfly, Matilda as well as countless television series including lead roles and regular extras roles in Neighbours, Offspring, House Husbands, Little Lunch, The Wrong Girl, and dozens of TV commercials for brands including Jeep, NAB AFL, Coles, Kmart, HBA, iSelect. Spunkz Talent have even had the opportunity to work on cruise ships and theme parks internationally. Spunkz currently represents one lucky spunk who is working in a lead role at MOTIONPARK Dubai. Tanya said that clients are constantly looking for new faces, so Spunkz offers new intakes every four to six weeks. “Clients might be looking for a stocky child who can skateboard, a teenage girl with braces, children with disabilities, twins, adults who can juggle, grandparents who can rockclimb,” she said.
Clients might be looking for a stocky child who can skateboard, a teenage girl with braces, children with disabilities, twins, adults who can juggle, grandparents who can rockclimb... interact with photographers and what field they are best suited to. Some talent may even be encouraged to pursue acting classes. The ultimate decision about who is booked for a job is up to the client and Tanya acts as a medium between the two. “Once clients select which talent they think might be suitable for their specific job, they will usually ask them to come in and audition. This is often just a 10-minute chat to a video camera, potentially some improvisational acting, clothing fittings or if for a lead role you might need to learn a script. Then we all play the waiting game, until the clients make their ultimate decision.” Tanya said that continuous work was not always promised in the industry, but any experience was a great way to earn money, enhance on hobbies or skills and build confidence.
Once talent has been offered representation by Spunkz, there is a process they must go through to gauge how well they

Scholarships are open to students who are considering enrolment at the school as well as those who are already enrolled. The school offers academic scholarships that are available to students who perform most highly in the external Edutest Scholarship examinations and who then successfully undertake an interview with the principal.

Dignitaries and dancing as schools By Victoria Stone-Meadows RANGEBANK Primary School in Cranbourne has been playing host to Indian students from Bluebells School International in New Delhi and ha a visit from the Indian Consul-General. Indian Consul-General Manika Jain, who visited the school recently, met students from both schools and was an honoured guest at a special assembly. Students from Rangebank and Bluebells shared their experiences of having a delegation of Indian students at the school for two weeks. There were also traditional Hindi dances performed by two Bluebells students and gifts exchanged between staff members of the two schools. Ms Jain spoke about the exchange program and how these experiences created friendships and understandings
between cultures that could last a lifetime. “It is so wonderful to see so many cultures under one roof,” she said. “It is a great thing to have students and schools sharing experiences and learning so much about one another in our multi-cultural society.” The celebration of cultures also touched on the Diwali Festival, which starts on the 15th day of the dark fortnight of the Hindu month of Ashwin, (October/November) every year. Other special guests included Casey councillor Amanda Stapledon and members of the local Hindi community. Rangebank Primary School principal Colin Avery said the exchange program had been very enriching for the students at Rangebank. “We’ve had a fantastic time, and there has been a tremendous sharing
share cultures of information about different approaches in Education between Bluebells and ourselves,” he said.
“Bluebells do seven exchanges a year and the wealth of information they are gaining clearly place them in a very good position across the world. “For us to be part of that exchange, we are sharing their knowledge and experience along the way which we are very grateful for.” Mr Avery also said the visit from the Consul-General was something very special and he was very grateful for her enthusiasm about their programs. “We were really honoured that the Consul-General was able to visit us,” he said. “For her to be able to come and get an appreciation of our school and emphasis we have on multiculturalism is extremely worthwhile.”

Just after Christmas 2015 I had this sudden urge to take a pregnancy test. I knew there was one test in the bathroom cupboard, left over from when we were trying to fall pregnant with our first daughter. I took the test and nearly fell over in shock when it was positive. I had some bleeding early in the pregnancy and went to hospital at one stage, on the advice of nurse on call. An ultrasound showed I had a large clot in my uterus, which was causing the bleeds, but that the baby was well. I started showing really early and there was no hiding the fact I was pregnant. Luckily after the early bleeding I had an uneventful pregnancy and felt well. I decided to attempt a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Caesarean) hoping for a better post-birth recovery so I could still pick up my toddler.
At about 34 weeks it was noted that baby was breech. My doctor mentioned that she would probably turn herself, but that if she remained breech I could choose to have an ECV (External Cephalic Version), where an obstetrician manually turns the baby, or elect to have a caesarean. I thought I’d give the ECV a try. At my 37 week appointment baby was still breech so I booked in to have the ECV. This procedure was done at the hospital; I was given a drug to relax my uterus and a specialist obstetrician manipulated my abdomen to turn the baby. It didn’t work the first time, but the obstetrician asked if he could try again and then it worked. It was uncomfortable having a nearly full-term baby flipped around but I was glad I had tried it because I was now back on track for a natural birth. On a Friday night a few days before my due date I started getting regular cramps, about 15 minutes apart. This continued overnight and the cramps were painful
Come & Try Calisthenics
My doctor came in and checked my dilation and broke the waters to help move things along. I laboured for a few hours using the gas and tried to concentrate on my breathing. I was hoping to be a lot closer to the pushing stage by the time I got checked again at 8pm. By the time 8pm rolled around, I hadn’t progressed much at all. After 24-hours of contractions I was disappointed with the slow progress and was fed up with the pain, so I asked for an epidural. Unfortunately, the epidural wasn’t complete and I could still feel a lot of pain with every contraction.

Somewhere around this time the head obstetrician accidentally pressed the emergency button and about 10 nurses came bursting in to the room at full speed. It was a funny moment in an otherwise painful afternoon. The hospital cafeteria was closed and my husband Jamie had not eaten all day, so the midwife told him to go in to town to get something to eat. While he was gone the baby started to show signs of distress. Two obstetricians and the midwife were watching the monitor as her heart rate decelerated with every
contraction with no recovery in between. As her condition worsened, my doctor called the operating theatre to prepare for a caesarean. Jamie returned just in time, with some McDonald’s chips in hand, and had to immediately throw them in the bin. I was given a drug to stop the uterus contracting and allow the baby to rest. As I was prepped for surgery I was watching the clock – it was close to midnight so I wasn’t sure what day she would be born. Maeve was born at 15 seconds past midnight on Sunday 7 August, 2016, weighing 7lb 1oz. After a long labour, she was covered in meconium and required some tactile stimulation. Luckily she cried almost straight away and her oxygen levels were fine. After some time in recovery we were taken to our room on the maternity ward and tried to get some sleep. I recovered well from the caesarean and was up and about later that afternoon. Despite not having the birth I planned for, I was grateful that myself and my baby were happy and healthy thanks to the doctors and amazing midwives.

family’s joy By Lia Spencer FINDING out they were pregnant on New Year’s wasn’t much of a surprise for Claire and Ty Osborne, who were planning on adding to their family of four. But finding out they were pregnant – with twins – was! Although the Pakenham couple were thrilled, they decided it would be double the fun to deliver the news to much of their family and friends only after they delivered the bubs. Claire, 28, said she and her husband both wanted a large family, and had a inkling she was pregnant with twins the third time around. Though her nausea wasn’t any worse than it was when she was pregnant with her daughter Sophie and her son Lucas, Claire was extra tired. “I had a gut feeling from the
Isobel was born six minutess later at 1.12pm, 6lb 15oz. Her first name was after Claire’s grandmother who passed away last year from cancer. Isobel’s middle name, Joyce, is after Ty’s nanna. After the arrival came the long awaited big reveal.
The Osborne twins were a big surprise to family and friends. beginning that it was a multiple pregnancy and Ty kept saying ‘stop saying that, you’re going to get your hopes up and be disappointed’. So when the sonographer showed us at the six-week scan the two sacs and heartbeats, I just laughed. Ty wasn’t there as he had work commitments, but when I showed him the scan photos he was shocked and let slip a swear word or two!” Claire’s mum was at the scan, and Ty told his dad that evening, but the couple decided to keep the surprise from one parent each, as well as most of their siblings, relatives and friends. “We thought it would be fun, but it was extremely difficult,” Claire said. “We wanted to tell many people all the time but knew it would be so amazing keeping the secret.” The couple was able to keep it under wraps as they already had several
baby items in storage but had to buy another cot, car seat and a new car to fit the growing family. Claire also told the suspicious that she was having a big baby boy, who was sitting up high and surrounded in fluid. In the final weeks, Claire’s growing belly added extra strain on her lower back and she was in a lot of pain and discomfort, making daily tasks very difficult. Claire was due on 13 September, but induced on 29 August at Warragul Hospital and had a intense, but extremely quick labour. “It was just over two hours of active labour until the twins arrived. The contractions were one after another and I didn’t get much of a break between each one. I didn’t have any pain relief. I just used a TENS machine on my back,” Claire said. “Both babies were
“When everyone came to visit us either in hospital or once we got home, they were surprised when they walked in to see the two babies,” Claire said. “We videoed most of the reactions, which was all of shock and disbelief at first, then excitement. We video called family that live too far away to visit.” Claire has since joined the Casey and District Multiple Birth Association and a few Facebook groups for mums of twins and said the support from her family has been invaluable. Life is quite busy in the Osborne house these days, with lots of noise, heaps of washing, little sleep but lots of love. Though the days are a bit more hectic, Claire hasn’t ruled out going back for more. “Straight after birth I said to Ty, ‘I’m done, no more!’ But you know what? I think I’ll change my mind,” she said. “Having children and being a stay home mum is what I’ve always wanted to do growing up, so I’m pretty much living my dream. The thought of the possibility of having twins again though is daunting.”

Here’s my excellent plan to make DogZombies the BEST band in the whole wide world! How hard can it be? (Very.) Right now I’m going to: 1. Write more songs. (Not about teachers.) 2. Make a spectacular music video. (Easy.) 3. Get some sleep. (Tricky when you’re being kept awake by loud noises.) 4. Annoy Delia. (Nothing to do with Dog Zombies but always fun.)
