In a pre-Christmas blow, about 50 City of Casey workers’ positions have been made redundant. As part of a re-structure across the council, the “redeployed” workers - believed to be mainly managers, co-ordinators, team leaders and supervisors - have been invited to re-apply for 90 vacant positions by 2 December. The council says it’s “committed” to finding each of the employees a new role among the apparent surplus of vacancies. But according to Australian Services Union organiser Ty Lockwood, there is no guarantee they’ll all have a job beyond Christmas. The workers were given vague descriptions of the vacancies, were unsure where they fit into the re-organised workforce and whether they’d land an equivalent position, he said. “People are losing their jobs through no fault of their own and may be forced to take a job they don’t like. “They’re expected to choose a job and they don’t have the information to make a decision. They don’t know what’s exactly involved in the role. “This is the hard line Casey is taking at the moment.” The workers felt deceived by the lack of consultation and updates since a re-structure was announced early this year, Mr Lockwood said. “Some organisations do their restructures well, Casey is doing this really badly. “It seems the employees are the last to find out, while the CEO and directors all locked in their positions mid-year.” The employees are expected to hear their fate by 22 December. “They’ve splashed out $130 million for a new civic centre and it’s all coming at a human cost – and it’s their own employees,” Mr Lockwood said. “There’s never a good time for this but especially at Christmas time. Have a bit of compassion!” Casey acting chief executive Sally Curtain said the council was “committed to finding a role for every redeployee”. “Following a recruitment freeze over the past six months there are many more vacant roles than redeployees.” Ms Curtain said Casey had embarked on a significant organisational change to ensure the “most effective and efficient” frontline services to the community.

Oasis faces bulldozers

In Brief Hunt for bumbling raid pair

It’s taken more than three decades to create but now the council wants to destroy this nature sanctuary. CAM LUCADOU-WELLS reports. John Foy isn’t going to stand by and watch

Casey council dispossess and bulldoze his 34-acre patch of paradise in Narre Warren North. The 78-year-old has spent 35 years transforming paddocks and a small billabong into a home with a luscious habitat garden with hundreds of plantings and a nesting pond for varieties of waterbirds. “It feels like 300 kilometres from Melbourne,” he said as he surveys a mother Pacific black duck and eight ducklings swimming across the lake. On 1 December, Mr Foy and neighbour Marlene Kane addressed a Planning Panels Victoria hearing to object to Casey compulsorily acquiring his land at 191-195 Belgrave-Hallam Road. He sees it as a David and Goliath battle against the Planning Minister - who gave permission for the acquisition overlay’s exhibition - and Casey council. Mr Foy said he was disgusted when he saw the council’s illustrated plans for his land for the first time last week. His house would make way for a road leading to sports fields. The duck lake will be partly filled and covered by the main soccer pitch. The northern sheep pastures would be home

John Foy has turned paddocks into idyllic garden. 162598 to two soccer fields, car parking and a pavilion as part of an extension of next door’s Narre Warren North Recreation Reserve. Casey moved to publicly acquire Mr Foy’s property after lengthy negotiations broke down. One of the sticking points for Mr Foy was he couldn’t get a guarantee from Casey to not disturb an embankment burial site of six family dogs. “I was going to put in a covenant but I was told I was wasting my time. The council has powers to withdraw it.” Four supportive submissions and three opposing submissions were lodged after the council’s advertised public acquisition overlay was exhibited in July and August.

Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS Ms Kane believes more neighbours would have objected had they had more details about the council’s plans. She said residents believed the council had only wanted to build a section of a 2.5-kilometre trail link in the site’s far northern corner. The link is between Frog Hollow Reserve and Lysterfield Park, following the meanderings of Eumemmerring Creek. In September, Casey council requested a state planning panel to consider Amendment C223 for the overlay. The council report states the development would help address a shortfall of at least three soccer pitches in Casey’s north.

Sanctuary’s destruction a ‘disbenefit’, says lawyer John Foy may be inconvenienced but the community gets a “clear net” benefit from acquiring the 78-year-old property owner’s land in Narre Warren North, Casey council argues. “Mr Foy will see it as a disbenefit to him,” Casey’s lawyer John Rantino told a Planning Panels Victoria hearing on 1 December. “We accept that ... but ultimately that’s what the compensation provisions are there for.” He said taking all of Mr Foy’s 34-acre property at 191-195 Belgrave-Hallam Road was “no more in size and location than is reasonably required” for the council’s purposes. “This is not some premature, ill-considered application of a public acquisition overlay,” Mr Rantino said. The public acquisition overlay was also backed by “strategic justification”, the hearing at Casey Civic Centre heard. Casey’s plans for the site are three soccer fields with 190 parking spaces, a pavilion and ecologically-beneficial wetlands. It also includes building the “missing link” in a trail between Frog Hollow Reserve and Lysterfield Lake. The path would follow Eumemmerring Creek, which bisects the property. Mr Rantino said that Casey was acting to alleviate the shortage of soccer fields in Casey’s north. By the council’s formula, the region is 4.5 pitches short and most of its existing venues weren’t of District-level standard. There was also the opportunity to expand and provide overflow parking for the next-door Narre

Police have described two men as “bumbling” through two armed robberies at milk bars in Hallam and Cranbourne West. The men armed with fishing knives were captured on CCTV as they entered a milk bar on George Chudleigh Avenue in Hallam about 10.30am on 23 November. Without a staff member present, the pair paced to and fro and rummaged behind the counter but settled for stealing a box of lighters. They fled in a waiting vehicle driven by a third male south along Nettle Drive. Two hours earlier, the same pair armed with fishing knives are believed to have demanded money from a milk bar attendant on the corner of David Avenue and Camms Road, Cranbourne West. They were scared off empty handed by the staff member and fled in a waiting car north along David Avenue. The first male was wearing a black hooded CAT jumper with ‘Caterpillar’ written down the right sleeve, a white T-shirt, a pink/red belt, dark pants, grey runners and a stocking or mask over his face, The second male was wearing a black PSC hooded jumper, white T-shirt, blue track pants with two white stripes on the legs, white runners and a stocking or mask over his face, The car is described as a silver BA Ford Falcon sedan.

Police cars damaged in pursuit A Narre Warren teenage girl involved in an erratic police pursuit throughout the south-eastern suburbs which damaged two police cars was assisting police last week but her male accomplice was still on the run. Multiple police cars and the Air Wing began chasing a reportedly stolen white Hilux after it was detected driving erratically on the Princes Freeway in Berwick at 10.10am on 29 November. The pursuit began in Narre Warren and travelled through Pakenham, Berwick and Cranbourne where the pursuit was called off at 11.05am. Police said a 19-year-old female got out of the car in Pakenham. Afghan fare’s nod to the West By Cam Lucadou-Wells What would you choose - the chicken parma or the traditional Afghan lamb shank qabuli? Such is the bold menu that confronts diners at Samadi’z in Noble Park with traditional Afghan kebabs served with chips and green salad. Or pits diametrically-opposed options such as mantu dumplings or bruchetta. Interestingly, Assma Samadi says it’s the traditional food cooked by her father - known simply as ‘Mr Samadi’ - which is getting the most takers. She says a lot of diners from the non-Afghan community are giving Mr Samadi’s offerings a go because it’s served in such a Western manner. For 20 years, Mr Samadi has gathered a lofty reputation, catering for weddings and celebrations of up to 1000 people. The recently-opened cafe-restaurant is the first time he shares with the masses his exquisite skills such as his beautifully crafted dumplings sauced

EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL with tomato, corn, yoghurt and mint. A must-try is the qabuli - a meltingly-soft lamb shank astride a Basmati rice mountain, sultanas and strips of carrot, or the lightly-spiced mince kebabs. There’s a varied breakfast menu including haleem porridge and a spread of scrambled or fried egg dishes - served with salmon and hollandaise, bruchetta and avocado, or a ‘big breakfast’ version with ciabatta, sausage and mushrooms. Assma creates the more Western fare such as thickly-layered chicken parma coated in a thick crust of melted cheese and Napoli sauce.

Looking Back 100 years ago 7 December 1916 Madame Ashley’s student concert On Thursday 30 November, an enthusiastic audience assembled in the Dandenong Town Hall. The entertainment passed off successfully and the frequency of encores testified that the teacher’s efforts in the past have been such as to gain hearty and welcome merited applause. Madame Ashley played the whole of the accompaniment during the lengthy programme. Excellent solos were rendered by Miss Bonnie Dawson, Miss Ivy Orgill, Miss Emily Brierly, Mr Lindsay Keys, and Mr Jack Keys. Gipsy dances were by Miss Hudson’s pupils, Misses Lillian Hope and Violet Harrison. 50 years ago 1 December 1966 At the wheel with Helen Doolan

Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society I have always been impressed with the effectiveness of this overhead lane indicator system, the lanes of course being controlled according to the flow of traffic. This method seemed to radiate a sense of team spirit, or accomplishment - a king of honour system, giving one satisfaction having negotiated a busy intersection. The yellow cones method makes me feel rather an idiot being herded into a certain lane, and embarrassment if you accidentally knock one over. I do wish they would revise the method of gauging traffic flow, whatever method is in force. 20 years ago 9 December 1996 Doff to a toff The Dandy Bacon pig sign is back, bigger and better than ever before and there’s no-one happier than Mr Maurie Jarvis and Mr Ian Cathie.

A third reincarnation of the famous sign, which dominated Dandenong’s skyline and greeted visitors to the town from Gippsland for 50 years, was officially unveiled at the Dandenong Market on Friday. The neon sign was restored to Dandenong because of community demand. “The sign carries great historic significance being one of the first animated advertising signs in Victoria,” Mr Cathie said. “But it also reflected much more than this. It symbolised a time of growth, of a company that helped keep Dandenong together during difficult times.” Present at the unveiling were three-times mayor of Dandenong Mr Maurie Jarvis, who worked at the Gippsland Bacon Curing Company, official name of Dandy Bacon for 49 years. The first sign was erected before WWII. It was replaced with the animated version which became so popular in the 1950s. Mr Jarvis said the original sign had be-

come part of Dandenong and had helped promote the city. Mr Cathie thanked former councillor Mr Ian McDonald for his campaigning work in having the sign returned to Dandenong. 5 years ago 5 December 2011 Sporty hope for African youth A South Sudanese migrant believes sport could be a panacea for some of the African community’s anti-social ills. By Cam Lucadou-Wells An Endeavour Hills woman has been refused bail in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court after being charged over an elaborate shop-stealing mission in a Costco store. Lucy Morgan and two accomplices were accused of taking a ceramic toilet out of its box and hiding more than $4400 of goods in the container in the Moorabbin store on 25 August. They then allegedly used sticky-tape from the store to securely close the box, the court was told on 28 November. Among the hidden items were a computer, a security camera system, a vacuum cleaner, two mini portable docks and a DVD recorder.

One of the co-accused used their Costco membership to buy the ‘toilet’, a Tonka truck and a $144 floor lamp, the court heard. Nominal informant Acting Sergeant Michael Silva told the court Kingston CIU detectives found the stolen security cameras installed at the front door and inside the co-accused’s house. The co-accused made full admissions to stealing the security system as well as the DVD recorder found in her home, Sgt Silva said. Morgan was also accused of being an accomplice to a male stealing a bottle of Wild Turkey inside his pants at Dan Murphy’s, Endeavour Hills. Sgt Silva said Morgan was un-cooperative during her record of interview, denying involvement in the thefts. She told police that the Wild Turkey “didn’t

taste very good”, the court heard. Sgt Silva said Morgan had several times failed to appear on bail for family violence and other theft matters. “She says she forgets when she has court because of an acquired brain injury. “It’s obvious to police that she’s avoiding prosecution with these matters and continues to commit indictable offences.” Morgan, who told the court she was withdrawing from alcohol, ice, cigarettes and Valium, said she wanted to go home to her family. “My mental health is not very good. It’s my mother who is keeping me on track. “I promise I won’t forget these court dates.” Morgan was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 2 December.

Mayor flags bid at second attempt to break rates cap By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Mayor Sam Aziz says the council is “most likely” to again apply for an exemption to the rates cap in its 2017/18 budget. Cr Aziz said the council “can’t afford not to” apply for a rates cap variation again. He said the “phenomenal” growth of 150 people moving into Casey each week caused great demand for infrastructure. “If we don’t have the rates variation, we’re facing a $200 million black hole over the next decade.” “We’re only talking about a marginal variation to rates for every household but it adds up to a lot - that’s the economy of scale.” Cr Aziz said the council was working on a four-year-plan to create Australia’s most liveable city with more local jobs, more “beautiful masterplanned suburbs” and “first-class” infrastructure. “It’s a vision worthy of the largest city (in Australia) by population.” The council had its application for a 3.47 per cent rates rise in 2016.17 - a 0.97 per cent variation to the 2.5 per cent rates cap - rejected by the Essential Services Commission in May. The council is expected to decide on making

Cr Aziz said the State Government’s recentlyannounced Growing Better Suburbs funding didn’t counterbalance the impact of rate capping. At the funding announcement, Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley said the Strathaird project would expand the centre’s kindergarten and maternal and child health services.

It will include an internet cafe, a multi-purpose community room with modern technology, kitchen and courtyard, public art and improved parking. It will create 45 extra four-year-old kindergarten places, and host more services such as a parents group and a sleep settling group. Construction of the Strathaird project starts late 2017.

Residents are not on the ball A new report released by Victoria University shows sport participation in Casey is well below the state average. The report was compiled by Associate Professor Rochelle Eime who analysed 2015 registration data from sports such as Australian football, basketball, bowls, cricket, golf, gymnastics, hockey, netball, football (soccer), sailing and tennis. The results from the analysis showed that in Casey only 12.73 per cent of children and young adults in the region participated in a community sport group or club. In more established rural areas of the state, the participation in sport rate is nearly 45 per cent for people in the same age bracket. Ms Eime said there was a lack of sporting facilities in newly established and high population growth area that had contributed to this decline in sport participation. “There are two main things that stop people in these areas from participating in sports,” she said. “In newly-built areas, everyone is new and the shared history and formation of the community is absent. “Secondly, we need people to build the facilities for them because clubs are built by volunteers and people need to be connected.” Ms Eime said her research reflected the disconnected nature of rapidly growing suburbs and the need for infrastructure like sporting grounds to help bring communities together. “If you are just buying or building a house, you aren’t connected yet and that takes time,” she says. “The provision of facilities is really important when planning the new buildings because once developers buy land and subdivide for housing, it’s very expensive to buy it back.” 12333206-KK49-16

Theft is a heartbreak By Cam Lucadou-Wells CHARITY meals-provider Gina Poulos has received a “heart-breaking” blow ahead of Christmas. Her Theodora House vehicle full of food parcels, cookbooks and her glasses was stolen from her Langwarrin home driveway on Halloween, 1 November. The 2007 Ford Falcon was her and husband Peter’s only car. “It was obvious we were a charity. The car had our Theodora House signs on it,” Ms Poulos said. “It breaks my heart.” Several times a week, Ms Poulos - travelling in a hire car - continues to deliver and serve her home-cooked hot soups and roast dinners at Wilson Street or Dan Murphy’s car park, Berwick. Each week she provides 200 food parcels and 900 meals, while looking for another car. “It’s very disappointing that you help so many people here in Berwick, Hallam and Narre Warren and this happens. “But for every person that’s bad, there’s 20 who are good.” Ms Poulos said the car keys had been stolen three weeks earlier from her kitchen table. It’s the second time one of her cars were stolen. In 2010, she didn’t have time to insure her $22,000 van before it was nicked. Her charity started 51 years ago just after donating left-over food from her 21st birthday party, but her family had always been “givers”, she said. “It was easy for us to give, to help someone in need.” Ms Poulos said there’s plenty of poverty in the Berwick area, including people who are mentally ill. “Once they pay for the rent, medication, cigarettes and beer, they have nothing left. “They can’t help themselves. It’s a wonderful feeling to help them - they feel really important and they deserve it. “You talk to them and you love them. “It’s a privilege.”

Court order for raping teen girl By Cam Lucadou-Wells

A 20-year-old man has accepted a community corrections order after pleading guilty to raping a teenage girl in a Cranbourne North park. Dale Mawer, who was 18 at the time, and his then 16-year-old victim had been walking together in the park near a party on the night of 7 February, 2015. In sentencing, Judge Mark Dean of the Victorian County Court said both had drank “substantial quantities” at the party and were “heavily intoxicated”. The girl’s friends discovered the pair in the park after hearing the girl crying out, Judge Dean said. Mawer dressed and left the scene, the court heard. Judge Dean said he accepted the traumatic impact on the girl and her mother, as well as the distress to Mawer’s family. “This is a tragic case,” he told Mawer. “Much harm has been caused to the victim and to her family, and to those close to you and your family. “Alcohol abuse and the objectification of women played an all too common role in these events.” Mawer was to be punished, though also considered as a young first offender, the judge said. “Rape is an extremely serious offence. “Vulnerable young women must be protected from this kind of offending by the courts.” The court heard that Mawer was a talented sportsman, a former TAC Cup footballer for Sandringham Dragons, and a graduate of the Hallam Sports Academy with good character references. He had no psychological illness but required treatment for alcohol abuse. Judge Dean accepted Mawer was “deeply remorseful” and had good prospects for rehabilitation.

Nathan Iuoras, with his latest award, lives a musically charmed life. 162389 it with aplomb. At eight, he entered his first composition, Russian Puppets, which was runner-up for original composition at the 2009 Dandenong Festival of Music and Arts. From then, there have been a stream of com-

Four people accused over the alleged throwing of a Molotov cocktail at police in Cranbourne North are facing a new charge that puts them in front of the Victorian County Court. Matthew Butler, 29; John Vave, 29; Angie Christdou, 26; and Kylie Blythman, 20, appeared briefly in separate video-link hearings at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 29 November. The co-accused now face an additional serious indictable charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice by attempting to destroy a stolen Audi Q3 “by way of arson” on 11 November, the court heard. According to the charge, police were in the process of seizing the vehicle as evidence. The charge laid on 28 November took the hearing out of Dandenong Magistrates’ Court into the County Court jurisdiction, the court heard. On 11 November, the four co-accused were allegedly involved in a high-speed police pursuit in Melbourne’s south-east after the unignited Molotov cocktail was hurled. They were arrested when the vehicle allegedly hit a garden bed in Hampton Park. Butler and Christdou were charged with recklessly endangering life by driving a vehicle at high speeds and changing drivers while driving in Hallam on the same day. Other charges include recklessly endangering life and attempted arson by throwing a Molotov cocktail - a 750ml vodka bottle of petrol - at a police officer next to a police vehicle. The four were also charged with receiving two stolen number plates and stealing a $40,000 Nissan Navara. All were remanded for a filing hearing at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 5 December.

position awards and he has flourished under piano teacher Grace Pinkowski and Nossal High School teacher James Mustafa. Two of Nathan’s latest works will be performed by Accelerando musicians at the program’s private end-of-year concert.

Quran exhibition gives an inside look into Islam THE Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Berwick Chapter held an exhibition on Saturday 26 November at the Hampton Park Library showcasing the Quran. The exhibition not only displayed the holy book but also calligraphy and verses and question sessions for people to learn more about the Ahmadi teaching of the Islam faith. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has held a number of such exhibitions in the southeast suburbs to dispel the myths surrounding the Muslim faith.

All members of the community were invited to the exhibition and given a chance to learn about the teachings of the Muslim faith and gain a better understanding of Islam. Mubashar Khalid, president of the Berwick Ahmadiyya community group, said the group want to bridge the divide between Muslims and other faiths. “Our objective to hold this Quran exhibition is to engage with the wider community and build bridges on common grounds and to spread Islam’s beautiful and peaceful teachings through these outlets of information and discussions.

“I see it as a very successful event as we had visits from a lot of keen members of the community who wanted to know about the true picture of Islam as firsthand knowledge.” This particular branch of Islam was founded in 1889 and is a modern revival of the faith that upholds tenets such as separation of mosque and state and rejection of extremism. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Association in Australia was officially formed in 1987 and has been working to bring communities together through peaceful teachings.

It’s slow, languid and sweet like the most glorious of mornings. Sixteen-year-old Narre Warren North composer and sublime talent Nathan Iuoras’s 1940sstyle jazz ballad Morning Song won the Monash University Emerging Jazz Composer Prize 2016. The deeply-layered work harmonises soft strings, an angelic voice, muted horns and sax with a lilting percussion. “It’s a standard orchestration for a ballad,” Nathan said. “I was going for a laid-back type of sound.” It was created while Nathan studied in this year’s Accelerando musical incubator program run by the Melbourne Recital Centre. Nathan was the first and only composer accepted into the accelerated learning program, which took in just five musicians in this year’s intake. The program has matured his compositions, he said. His talented classmates inspired him with ideas and influences, while industry professionals have shared advice and insight. Asked for a music preference, Nathan leans to Romantic classical and Latin jazz. “I love far too much music, nearly every single genre. I can get something out of all of them.” Since he was a precocious five, Nathan nagged his parents to start piano lessons. He then took to

Politicians let their boots do the talking as they took on Doveton Special Soccer School players in a friendly fixture on 26 November. In what’s now becoming a convivial tradition, nine Victorian ALP pollies - including Deputy Premier James Merlino, Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams, state Upper House MP Adem Somyurek and former Bruce MP Alan Griffin - put on a spirited display at Waratah Reserve but were pipped 3-0. It was a stark improvement on last year’s 10-1 drubbing won by the DSSS. After the game, players on both sides enjoyed banter at a barbecue - even Mr Merlino who hobbled off late in the game with a pulled hammy. The game was organised by Ms Williams and DSSS founder Juan Carlos Loyola to raise awareness about the soccer school’s program. The DSSS has been run by Mr Loyola for 24 years to give players of all ages with intellectual disabilities a chance to play and train. Ms Williams said the soccer school was integral to the community. “It enables people of all abilities to have the opportunity to participate in physical activity and reap the social, physical and mental health benefits of playing team sport. “We love our sport in Dandenong and this annual soccer match is a fantastic demonstration of how sport brings people and communities together.” Other MPs who took the field included Frankston MP Paul Edbrooke and Eastern Metro Region MP Shaun Leane. Melton MP Don Nardella warmed the bench.

Kaduna Park Estate is a major new community development located on Cardinia Road in the suburb of Officer South. It is the first ED certified development in the area. The estate will provide extensive residential living opportunities in a variety of formats, from larger traditional house blocks, to medium density and mixed use opportunities near parks and the proposed Neighbourhood Activity Centre. The site itself contains nearly 50 hectares of staged development, which will be completed over a number of years, and is located 48 kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD. A focal point of the project is the heritage homestead which is of historic significance to the area. As such, the building will be restored and become part of the community centre and gardens. Wonderful landscaping and frog ponds will be incorporated into the design to ensure the existing fauna and flora will be protected.

NEW HOMES & LAND

RESIDENTS SEARCHING FOR ANOTHER SLICE THREE years ago Virginie and Fabrice Jacquin and their two daughters Angelina and Tiffany became some of the first residents of Berwick Waters, a development by Frasers Property Australia and Mondous Property Australia. They were the first to move into their street in the first stage of the development and since then more than 400 homes have been built and more than 1000 lots sold. “We were only the second house on the estate so we pretty much saw it grow,” Virginie said. The family moved from Narre Warren North when they built their three-bedroom Henley home but are now ready to move to something bigger, as long as it’s still within Berwick Waters. “We’ve outgrown our home so we’re trying to find a waterfront lot,” Virginie said. “We’re looking to building something double storey with four or five bedrooms. “We love it here. It’s got beautiful surroundings and it’s where we want our kids to grow up. “It’s very family-oriented here - there’s a lot of children and most of our children’s friends live here in the estate.” Frasers Property Development director Jill Lim said it was gratifying to see residents choose to remain within Berwick Waters when they decided to look for a new home. “It’s testament to the quality of what’s been delivered so far, and we’re proud of that,” she said. The Jacquin family make full use of the recreational opportunities within Berwick Waters. “We love that there’s a park for the kids to play. “We go for strolls every weekend, we go

VIRGINIE AND FABRICE JACQUIN AND THEIR KIDS ANGELINA AND TIFFANY ARE KEEN TO UPSIZE. for picnics and ride our bikes,” Virginie said. “We wanted the kids to grow up somewhere a bit more secluded where there was not so much traffic and where they could ride their bikes.” There’s also free weekday fitness classes at Berwick Waters. The classes, run by

Live Life Get Active and sponsored by Frasers Property, include yoga, boxing and cross training and take place at 9.30am at Waterfront Park, Riverstone Boulevard. Location was another important factor for the Jacquin family. Virginie runs her own hair and beauty salon business in Clyde North while Fabrice commutes an hour by

train to work in the Melbourne CBD. Public transport and nearby schools were on the list of requirements for the family when they moved and Berwick Waters ticked those boxes. The Berwick Waters sales office is at 5 Riverstone Boulevard, Clyde North, and is open daily from 11am to 6pm.

Movie shows the many faiths A new short film captures Greater Dandenong’s many faiths. People with refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds contributed to The Welcome Tours during four Greater Dandenong Interfaith Network bus tours last year. The network launched the film at Walker Street Gallery in Dandenong on Thursday 17 November. The Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship (OMAC) and Greater Dandenong Council funded the trips. The network regularly runs similar tours for the general public, Interfaith Network development officer Helen Heath explained. “One of the initial aims of the interfaith tours program was to train asylum seekers or refugees as volunteer tour guides, providing an opportunity to be positively engaged in social activities while learning about different faiths and in turn teaching others about their own,” she said. “However, this proved a challenging task in just encouraging participants to join these tours. “So the focus shifted to conducting tours and trying to encourage diverse groups of participants to join in.” Part of the funding included filmmaker Richard Leigh attending the tours to share stories from the places visited and from participants. “The aim of the film primarily is to educate the community about the challenge of being a new arrival, particularly as an asylum seeker or refugee in the local Dandenong area, and for participants to feel free and able to tell their stories,” Ms Heath said. “The times that people had come to Australia varied from three days to nine years so there was a wide range of experience. “Everyone seemed to enjoy the time and by the end of the tour had met and engaged with new people - both each other on the bus and the communities that welcomed them - and had learnt something of the different faiths, food and cul-

35 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 5 December, 2016

It’s none of our business but… A Dandenong man has claimed he was drinkdriving to escape racist abuse during a night out in Geelong. The man, who blew 0.167 and had never held a driving licence, claimed his passenger was more drunk than him and unable to drive, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard. After pulling the man’s car over, police observed the accused climbing out of the drivers’ seat into the back of the vehicle - however the passenger stayed in their seat. The man had been disqualified from driving after a high-reading drink-driving conviction in 2015. The judge noted the man’s excuses would be no comfort if he had killed someone while driving while he was so drunk. The man was put on a six-month commu-

nity corrections order including 50 hours of unpaid work and alcohol counselling, as well as a road trauma awareness program. He was disqualified from driving for 32 months. A woman has failed in her bid for a personal safety order against a Victoria Police officer who had evicted her from her home under a Sheriff’s warrant. The woman argued at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that she had never seen the warrant and was now unable to get in her house due to police changing the locks without her permission. In seeking to institute proceedings against the arresting officer, she accused him of acting out a “home invasion”. The magistrate noted a trust - of which the

woman was a beneficiary - was the home’s true owner. “In my view your application is vexatious, without substance, made in bad faith, without reasonable prospects of success and on the face of it, an abuse of process.” A man has been freed from jail after languishing there for five and a half months for defaulting on tollway fine payments. The man was arrested by Sheriff officers and jailed when he got behind on his $1000-a-month payment plan, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told. His lawyer said it was a concerning case, given the man had sat in jail for 155 days without appearing in court. “I don’t know how he went through (such a long time in jail) without getting any legal

advice,” his lawyer said. “I believe there have been legislative changes so the Sheriffs now bring them out to a court first.” The judge expressed surprise the man spent so long in jail on “these type of matters”. He discharged the man from two-thirds of more than $60,000 owed to tollway companies. The man was also fully cleared of more than $30,000 in fines owed to Civic Compliance Victoria. “If there’s a (financial) crisis again you can always approach the court and vary the amount you can pay (on the payment plan),” the judge told him.

SPORT Dream no longer Pie in the sky By Nicholas Creely After being overlooked in Friday 25 November’s AFL draft, Dandenong Stingrays utility Mitch McCarthy has been taken by Collingwood in the rookie draft held on 28 November. It was initially speculated that the youngster would have been taken in the third-round of the draft but due to the depth of the draftees was unable to gain a senior spot. The former 19-year-old basketballer, who is a late bloomer to football, was taken with pick seven after an injury riddled but promising season at TAC Cup level. McCarthy only returned to Australia at Christmas 2015 and was invited to attend the Dandenong Stingrays program. The Mt Eliza product was nominated by St Kilda as a Category B rookie if overlooked, but will now head over to the Holden Centre to begin his journey as a Pie. After injury plagued him in his comeback year to the game, AFL recruiters saw enough attributes they liked. In his 2016 season, McCarthy represented Vic Country and the Dandenong Stingrays, showcasing athleticism and genuine upside. He is expected to be developed in his first couple of seasons at AFL level, and from there is seen as an exciting prospect ready to explode in the ruck. Collingwood recruiter Dominic Milesi explained the selection of the Stingray to fans on the club’s website. “Mitch is a 195cm, 19-year-old who missed the second half of the year through injury,” he said. “He’s a very versatile player who was used in the ruck, but we believe he has scope to play as a key defender or key forward going forward.

Mitch McCarthy is now officially a pie. 152161 “We’re really excited to bring Mitch in.” In an even bigger surprise, three Casey Scorpions were selected by AFL clubs, with Oscar McInerney (Brisbane), Tim Smith (Melbourne) and Declan Keilty (Melbourne) all selected. The trio had impressive seasons at VFL level,

with Smith and Keilty being named in the VFL Team of the Year. Melbourne recruiter Jason Taylor said the Casey duo will add vital depth to the Demons list. “Tim Smith obviously played at Casey - we think he is going to give us real strength in the

Young golfer driven to get to the top of his game By Nicholas Creely It’s not surprising that 12-year-old Ayden Johnston idolises Australian golfing legend Jason Day. In fact, the two have quite a few similarities - they both started playing golf at the same age, and they are both driven athletes determined to get to the top of the golfing world. And for Ayden, just three weeks ago, on Sunday 13 November, his golfing star shone once again. Not only did the Rowville student head across to South Australia for the School Sport Victoria Gold 12 years and under state championships, but he was also part of a successful team that on the Craig Parry Shield for two years running. Over Ayden’s four day championship he finished with an impressive nett total of 150. Ayden, who lives in Mitcham with his family, began his golfing journey at around the age of six and loved the putting side of the game before getting into mainstream golf. He said the influence of Day and his family has been a driving factor. “I like golf because there is always a new challenge or problem that you are being faced with or put yourself into or find yourself in, and you need to find the best or easiest way out with the reward a low cost of shots if it doesn’t work,” Ayden said. “I like Jason Day because he is Australian and he only started play golf at a young age and he is one of the best golfers in the world at the moment and I started earlier than him and if I do what he did, who knows how good I could be. “My Dad and family supported me and would drive me to training, to the golf courses, to gym before school and after. “In the long run, if I become a pro I will remember what they did for me and thank them and give them some of my winnings and get them each one thing they have always wanted.”

Rising golf star Ayden Johnston had a successful state campaign.

forward half, and also give us some aerial presence,” Taylor said. “It was very fulfilling giving Tim an opportunity. “Declan gives us some coverage in key stocks, he’s also shown an ability to play forward and ruck, so it rounds out our depth. “We’re really pleased with the result.” They will both now join the club that is aligned to Casey, after the Demons closely monitored the pair throughout the VFL season. It is expected that the duo will push their way onto the senior list at some stage in 2017. McInerney was one of few VFL players invited to the combine, where clubs were drawn to his impressive natural athleticism. He has only been playing VFL for a short amount of time, after missing out on his draft year, went to play local football before being taken by the Scorpions. Smith, 25, is a particularly heart-warming story. Despite being overlooked time and time again, the man nicknamed ‘The Bull’, for his strong character and competitiveness, kept pushing himself, and has finally got some reward for years of great form. It’s no rest for the wicked for these young men, who will be thrown straight into the deep end, ready to begin fulfilling their lifelong dreams. It comes after other Stingrays pair Josh Battle (St Kilda) and Myles Poholke (Adelaide) were picked up in the draft three days prior. Unfortunately for the Stingrays, a raft of youngsters, including Bailey Morrish, Sam Fowler and Mason De Witt, were unable to secure a spot at an AFL club. It is expected that the trio will transition into VFL football next season, in a bid to keep their name in the spotlight for AFL clubs.

Elliott striking up for change The Melbourne Renegades have lost the services of Dandenong legend Sarah Elliott who has signed with the Adelaide Strikers in the second season of the WBBL. The 34-year-old former international, who plays her cricket with Dandenong in the Women’s Premier competition, is set to add vital experience to the Strikers’ line-up, with her off-spin and aggressive batting strongly suited to Twenty20 cricket. She captained the Melbourne Renegades in the inaugural season of the WBBL last year, but the club and Elliot were unable to reach terms, allowing the Strikers to swoop on the valuable veteran. Elliot has had a strong start to the season for the Vic Spirit this season, making a fantastic century against ACT not long ago. Andrea McCauley, the Adelaide Strikers’ coach, said the signing of Elliott was about depth, and is pleased about what she can add to the exciting squad they have compiled. “Sarah is a talented all-rounder who has been a consistent performer for a long period of time. “She joins us after another strong WNCL season with the bat and will add to our spin bowling stocks,” she said. The WBBL opening weekend takes place on 9 and 10 December at North Sydney Oval in a carnival-style format, in which all eight WBBL teams will be present. The Adelaide Strikers’ first game will be against the Melbourne Renegades at 1.45pm at North Sydney Oval 1 on Saturday 10 December. The match will be broadcast live on Ten, while every WBBL match will be live streamed on cricket.com.au and Facebook. 37 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 5 December, 2016

No beauty pageant but Bears bank the points By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW It’s beginning to enter that period before Christmas, where wins are pivotal, and losses......well they are really costly. Day two of the round’s Turf 1 action was thrilling, as reigning premiers Cranbourne continue to assert their dominance once again. The Eagles are flying, and their outright victory was simply brutal. Narre Warren’s horrendous season continues, while North Dandenong have hit back, after a sparkling century from Caleb Millman, who played his first match in Turf 1 this season. And then there is Springvale South, who continue to win and put pressure on the top. It’s beginning to shape as anyone’s flag for the taking, in what is one of the most hotly contested Turf 1 seasons in memory. BERWICK v DINGLEY It wasn’t pretty, and sometimes it doesn’t need to be, but Berwick (181) finally toppled Dingley (163 and 0/16) on day two of their clash at Arch Brown Reserve. After the Dingoes set the Bears 164 to win, they resumed the day’s play precariously three wickets down with over 90 runs to win. And the contest was hard fought, as Jasenthuliyana Chathuranga (6/44) threatened to tear the game apart with a brutal and unflinching spell of bowling. Chathuranga claimed vital wickets throughout, including reigning club champion Ryan Crawford, who was starting to get going after a slow and steady 20. In what was a glorious introduction to summer, the Bears struggled scoring in general, and with each passing over it seemed that a stunning upset was on the cards. And that’s just exactly what the Dingoes have been able to do in Turf 1 this season - squeezing the life out of batting sides and being competitive and spirited. The Dingoes have been a surprise packet this season, after coming up through the Turf 2 ranks, with their grit and endeavor noticeable in every performance this season. But the Bears late-order quartet of Crawford (20), Ryan Williamson (15), Jarrod Goodes (27) and James Wilcock (14) slowly but surely saw them home in what could be pivotal come the pointy end of the season. At one point in the run-chase, the Bears sat uncomfortably at 6/101, with Nathan Pilon (0), Adam Watson (28) and century machine Jarrod Armitage (5) back in the sheds. Opening batsman Darren de Souza (38) was impressive once again and played with composure beyond his years, while skipper Goodes followed on from his explosive half-century the week previous to guide his side home. Goodes is once again enjoying a productive season, and his batting has been a real feature of the Bears new-look side. Apart from Chathuranga, the Dingoes bowl-

Dingoes bowler Calvin Barlow was impressive once again. 162712 ers, Andrew Dalby, Calvin Barlow and Matthew Hague were all solid despite the loss and can take much confidence in pushing a premiership fancy. In what is going to be a closely fought out top four on the Turf 1 ladder, the Bears simply lifted when it mattered, and will take great confidence in knowing that when their stars fail to cash in, there are others waiting in the wings. Forty gives bang for Buck The Jason Thompson-trained Buck Forty delivered one of his more impressive performances when taking out his heat of the Sir John Dillon Memorial at Sandown Park on Thursday night. Whelped in January 2014, the black dog out of Buck Fever-Fancy Jaffa was slow to begin then motored through the field and took control approaching the home turn, before accelerating away to win by an increasing eight lengths in 34.08 - the fastest heat win of the night. Handler on the night, and wife of Thompson, Seona, was ecstatic with the run. “I was worried after he was slow to begin but in hindsight it was probably the best thing for him as he was able to drop to the fence,” Seona said. “To power to the line the way he did and to run that time coming from last was unbelievable. Honestly, we think that was one of the best win he’s ever had.” If Buck Forty is to win next week’s Sir John Dillon Memorial final, he will reach $370,000 in prize money - a substantial amount with only two group race wins next to his name. “He’s worked hard to earn the prize money he has - he hasn’t won a heap of big races, he’s raced so consistently for a long time. We’re super proud of him,” Seona said. The kennel will also have Aeroplane Tommy engaged in Thursday night’s final after running third in his heat behind two of the outsiders of the field in Dash of Rose ($18.50) and Mepunga Rosie ($19.20). “Tommy does need things to go his way but I thought he was a bit stiff on Thursday night,” Seona said. “He doesn’t have the same traits as Buck Forty but it was still a super run and he has earned his spot in the final.” Aeroplane Tommy and Buck Forty have drawn well in next Thursday’s final in boxes two and three respectively. “We’re happy with where they’re drawn - all the speed is on their outside so they should be able to find the rail,” she said. “We couldn’t be happier, though you can’t go into group races with too much confidence -you always need a bit of luck.” SIR JOHN DILLON MEMORIAL FINAL(595m). Rangers rebound to eventually snuff out the Flames By Nick Creely The Dandenong Jayco Rangers are well and truly secure at the top of the WNBL ladder after securing a tense and dramatic victory over Sydney Uni Flames at Dandenong Stadium on Saturday night. It was a horrific start for the Rangers, who were down by as much as 13 points in the first half, before the crowd lifted and their fluent game style began to creep back in. The Rangers were down 11-22 after just five minutes of court action, but eventually regained the offensive side of their game, wrestling back control to narrow down the deficit by the last quarter. Despite the Flames coming hard at the Rangers in the last quarter, the home crowd saw them take away the game in one fell swoop. Eventually, the Rangers were able to put together a strong and dominant final term 23-13, to elevate themselves as the competition’s heavyweights. With 7:01 remaining on the clock, star import

Ally Malott rose, and from there, the Rangers never relinquished their lead. It was truly an all-round effort from the Rangers, with four players scoring in double-digits, with Mallott’s 22 points a major highlight. Sara Blicavs, Steph Cumming and Amelia Todhunter were all strong, with the latter pulling down an incredible 11 rebounds in a best on court display, after starting off the bench. For the Flames, Belinda Snell was dominant with 27 points. The Rangers won the rebound battle once again 40-33, and also outscored the Flames on the paint, 38-26. But it was their major boost off the bench that proved the winner, with 23 points coming from the second unit. Todhunter spoke about the challenge of Sydney, but was just happy to get away with the win. “Sydney brought their A game, but we chipped away at it,” she said. Assistant coach John White said that the issue was obvious in the first half, and was impressed with the team’s response to the poor start.

“It was pretty obvious that our defense was probably lacking in the first half, and we challenged them in the half-time break - we changed up a few things and it seemed to work for us I guess,” he said. The impressive win leaves the Rangers with an 8-3 win-loss ledger, and a decent platform to launch into the second half of the season. Sydney have now fallen to 5-4 for the season. Andrew’s love bowled them over By Nicholas Creely

Andrew was a fine gloveman for his beloved Lakers. “prankster” nature, in which he would often take selfies on people’s mobiles, or hide empty cans around someone’s house - but also his incredible passion for music was well-noted. Bishop said that Andrew was one of the first blokes to offer a greeting with a handshake and a “how you going mate?”, but on the field, he was the master of the understated one-liner, but his sledges were often directed at his teammates,

not the opposition. He described Andrew as a loving father to Cam, Tan and Josh and husband to Kim, and this loving nature transgressed through every individual he encountered. So much so, that in the week after Andrew’s passing, all the clubs that played Lynbrook allowed the club to farewell him on the field, prompting DDCA secretary Ray Nicholls to say

New coach is looking to build on Rangers’ success By Nicholas Creely Highly regarded Rangers assistant coach John White has signed on as the 2017 Dandenong Basketball SEABL Women’s Head Coach. White, who is currently entrenched within the Rangers program in the WNBL, under the tutelage of Larissa Anderson, steps up in his bid to further advance the development of some of Dandenong’s most talented female basketballers. White told Dandenong Basketball that he is over the moon and ready to take the opportunity as he looks to lead the Rangers to their sixth championship in eight years. “Dandenong has been renowned for its successful player development pathway from the junior programs through to our WNBL Jayco Rangers and I am grateful to the organisation for allowing me to take on this role to continue to provide opportunities for women’s sport,” he said. “I’d like to thank Larissa Anderson, Trish Fallon and Graeme Allen for their support and I am looking forward to building on the success of past

“it shows that this great game of ours can still bring people together during a time of grieving and the respect shown is gratifying”. Amazingly, his son Cameron is now the captain of the E Grade side, in what is a touching sentiment in his father’s honour. an assistant at the Melbourne Tigers in the NBL, he had a stint at Knox Basketball, was Director of Coaching at the Camberwell Dragons, an assistant coach of the Sandringham Sabres SEABL team, and has also been heavily involved at Vic Metro level with the Under 15 Girls. He has also coached Caulfield Grammar Senior Boys to the Australian Schools National Championships in 2008, 2009 and 2012. Elite Teams Administrator for Dandenong Basketball Trish Fallon is confident White can continue to build success and continue the legacy left by championship winning coach Jeremi Moule, who has stepped aside for work and family reasons. “The DBA are looking forward to having John White on board as our newly appointed SEABL Women’s Head Coach. “John is a well-respected coach who brings an abundance of passion, enthusiasm and knowledge, and we look forward to working with John in continuing a very successful SEABL Women’s program into 2017 and beyond,” Fallon said.

“What happens on the field stays on the field” is a simple yet touching saying. It means to be competitive in the heat of battle - but when the day has ended and the umpires flick off the bails to signal stumps, it is truly about being kind to others and putting life into perspective. In the life of the late Andrew Pellissier, a Lynbrook Cricket Club champion, who passed away on 8 November 2016, at the age of just 47, this saying, truly defines a life that impacted on a lot of people. ‘Pellis’, as he was affectionately known by at his beloved Lakers, joined the club in 2007/08 and immediately became one of the most likeable and respected figures around the traps of the Dandenong District Cricket Association. He went on to play 95 games at the club, captaining numerous sides over the journey, including the club’s E Grade team this season. But there was more to the left-handed batsman and highly regarded wicket-keeper than met the eye. He was apparently a star bowler - but only in his eyes! The four wickets he once claimed in a match truly proved the adage that “cricket is a funny game” because his mates say he “couldn’t bowl”. Sure he made over 1300 runs for the club, and claimed more than 50 dismissals with the gloves, but his teammates spoke about his loyalty, his passion and his general loveable nature. He was described as the kind of bloke that would nurture the young players coming into the club and was quick to give them advice and welcome them. He was often late to training, not because he avoided the cricket, but because he loved nothing more than getting to the rooms to enjoy the banter that cricket clubs are famous for. Lakers club-president Jason Bishop spoke glowingly about his impact on the club, citing his
