Models of hope MOUNT Evelyn RSL is working hard to ensure all local children enjoy a merry Christmas in 2016, recently purchasing 50 model cars from a member, which will be given as presents. The model cars are all classic saloon cars, made in England and all brand-new in boxes. The RSL is donating them all to the Holy Fools and Mount Evelyn Christian Reformed Church. Kyoshi remembered A CROWD of about 300 people gathered at Edge Martial Arts in Mt Evelyn to say their final goodbyes to Kyoshi Andrew Roberts on Thursday 1 December. Mr Roberts, 53, passed away in his Lilydale home on Tuesday 22 November after a year-long battle with brain cancer. Hereford Road was temporarily closed as the Mt Evelyn community stopped in honour of the influential man. At the Edge, commonly known as
‘the dojo’, community members paid their respects and said goodbye to the man they admired. A service was held at 10am at the Lilydale Memorial Park, where family members and friends shared memories of the time they got to spend with Mr Roberts. His large smile and sense of humour was repeatedly acknowledged. One of Mr Roberts’ jobs was as a trolley collector for Coles in Boronia, but he did not believe in this title - instead, he liked to be referred to as a ‘trolley-ologist’.
Mr Roberts, his wife of 16 years Heather and their children Katherine, Jennifer, Amy, Corey and Samantha were a close family. They went on many family holidays, including their annual Beechworth Christmas holiday. He was said to be “clean-freak” who constantly cleaned the family cars and always had spray and paper towel close to him. In a touching tribute, Mrs Roberts had written and read out a poem for Mr Roberts.

ill adults, he was given the opportunity to attend the AFL Grand Final on Saturday 1 October where his beloved Bulldogs won. Friend Paul Veldman said Mr Roberts was a warrior through and through. In 2015, he was awarded an Australia Day award for his service to the community. On Sunday 23 October, Mr Roberts was graded to the rank of Rokuban, otherwise known as the Sixth Dan, which recognised years of commitment to the art.

His daughter Amy Gardam shared his passion and together they taught martial arts to people of all ages. Gave all for the call By Kath Gannaway IN 2015 Lilydale and District Historical Society embarked on what they recognised themselves was an ‘ambitious’ project to commemorate the centenary of World War I. ‘They Answered the Call’ was officially launched by Casey MP Tony Smith on Saturday, 26 November, with descendants of a number of the featured WWI soldiers joining society members and invited guests, including Yarra Ranges Council Mayor Noel Cliff. Society president Sue Thompson said the project aim was to compile a list of all the men and women who served in WWI from the society’s collections area of Lilydale, Coldstream, Gruyere, Killara, Seville, Silvan, Montrose and Kilsyth, and make them available digitally and in hard copy. Three members of Lilydale’s Goodall family were among the ‘locals’ who answered the call. Joseph Francis Goodall used the alias Cyril Fish when he enlisted at 17 years of age in 1917. He was fol-
lowing in the footsteps of his cousins Thomas Henry Goodall, 25, William Henry Goodall, 28, who had enlisted in 1915. Joseph’s alias didn’t hold up, and he was returned to Australia in 1918, William also returned home in 1918 having served in Egypt and France before being repatriated to England with gunshot wounds. Sadly, Thomas was killed in action in Belgium, having served in Egypt and France. It is just one story of 350 that are part of the ‘They Answered the Call’ display and on the website. Society president Sue Thompson said the story was ongoing. “We encourage any descendants to contact us if they have any images or information we could add to the website,” she said following the launch. A book on the 15 people featured in the display is available from the Old Lilydale Court House for $5. For more information, visit lilydalehistorical.com.au or phone Ms Thompson on 0475 219 884.
NEARLY three decades of commitment to documenting the region’s history has been recognised, with a historical society president receiving a state-wide honour for her service. At a meeting on 5 November, Lilydale and District Historical Society president Sue Thompson received an award from the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, “in recognition of distinguished service to history in Victoria”. Ms Thompson said the Award of Merit, handed over by RSHV president Don Garden, came on her 29th year in the society, after joining up in 1987. “It’s recognition of my contribution, not only locally, but to history in general,” she said. “And I think it’s a credit to all the people ... my family, in particular, because my husband, Wally, has put up with a lot over the years - and my two boys. “Over the years, mum’s been off doing this, that, or the other, or writing books or on deadline ... so they’ve been terrific, too.” Ms Thompson’s start at the society came when she
Lilydale and District Historical Society's Sue Thompson Picture: JESSE GRAHAM with her award. 162682 was a journalist at the Lilydale Express, working on an edition for the centenary of the paper and gathering stories from the past. “I contacted the Historical Society and met with the then-president Leigh Blackburn and Sandy Ross, who was the archivist at the time - he had photographs, so we got our heads together and selected a whole bunch of photos from the society’s collection to go with the stories in the 100-page newspaper edition we were putting out,” she said. “That linked my great interests in family history and journalism and local history.
“They convinced me to join the society and I joined and I’ve been there ever since.” She said the society had been a welcoming group, and that members are able to follow their own passions when it comes to history, whether it be research, writing or another avenue. “I think the society has been fantastic, because they’ve allowed everyone to develop and grow their own interests in the society - my forte was writing books, so they’d write the stories and I’d knock them into shape,” Ms Thompson said.
She said some of her favourite work at the society was in promoting Dame Nellie Melba’s life, as well as times when the council and land owners have sought help to find the history of old houses in the area. Though so much information is posted online every day, Ms Thompson said historical societies were still important to help document how areas, such as the Yarra Valley, became the way they are. “What you have today was created by people and events that happened in the past - the fact that Healesville is where it is ... Healesville was there because it was at the foot of the mountain, it was the last post before you climbed up over the range,” she said. “But things evolve from events and circumstance and geographic locations and we have to keep that alive, so people know that what they’ve got today, they have to treasure as well, because that’s for future generations as well.” Ms Thompson said the society will be working on a fourth volume of As it Happened, documenting Coldstream’s history, to release next year - her 30th year with the group.
‘Hulk’ named top athlete Hot on Santa’s trail MOUNT Evelyn Paralympian Todd Hodgetts has added another achievement to his already impressive resume, being named Victoria University’s ‘Male Athlete of the Year’. Hodgetts, 28, who is nicknamed ‘The Hulk’ and who lives with autism, is a seasoned shot-put champion. He was first drawn to the sport after his brother brought home a shot-put from school. His Paralympic dreams, though, were put on hold when athletes with an intellectual disability were not allowed to compete at the Sydney 2000 Games. This was, however, revised for the 2012 London Games. He then set a new F20 shotput world record of 16.09m at the Australian championships, before breaking his own record to win gold at London. He went on to win the 2015 World Championships in Doha and plans to defend his title next year in London. Hodgetts is completing a Di-

THERE’LL be no shortage of activities in Mount Evelyn this December, with ‘Santa’s Trail’ and the local CFA’s ‘Santa Run’ enlivening the town. On Saturday, 17 December, the Mount Evelyn Christmas Committee has organised ‘Santa’s Trail’, which will involve a collection of ‘words’ from participating businesses within Mount Evelyn, which can be used to complete a Christmas story. Participants will begin at Baby let’s Cruz, where they will be given a list of businesses and their addresses, as well as a story in which they need to ‘fill in the gaps’. Once all of the words have been collected, they will head back to ‘baby lets Cruz’ to collect their showbag. Santa’s Trail will take place between 10am to 2pm, with the first 100 participating children to receive a showbag. Register on the day. Baby let’s Cruz is located on the corner of Birmingham Road and Snowball Avenue, Mount Evelyn. Meanwhile, the Mount Evelyn Fire Brigade’s ‘Santa Street Run’ for 2016 is ready to fire up.

DON’T MISS OUT...
Secretary of the Mount Evelyn Fire Brigade, Judith Coles, encouraged local children to keep an eye-out for the ‘jolly fellow’. “This is a great community event that the members do over four evenings leading up to Christmas,” she said. “Santa will be on the back of the tanker and will be giving out bags of lollies to all the children.” The Street run will take place from 20 to 23 December (times may vary slightly; allow five-minutes before or after schedule. Run will not proceed if there is a fire call) Tuesday, 20 December: Including Buckmaster Drive (5.40pm-5.50pm) and Stringybark Boulevard (7.10pm); Wednesday, 21 December: Including Currajong Avenue (5pm), York on Lilydale (5.40pm) and The Wridgeway (7pm); Thursday, 22 December: Including Wedderburn Crescent (5.10pm) and George Street playground (5.30pm); Friday, 23 December: Including Mount Evelyn Primary School (5.10pm), Birmingham Road playground (5.30pm) and Wray Crescent walk-through and IGA (7pm).

No to complacency WE must not grow complacent in the lead-up to this fire season, despite Daniel Andrews’ attacks on our volunteer firefighters and his insincere concern for regional Victorians. The Andrews Government has worked hand-in-glove with the union to bully senior CFA and MFB management into signing an enterprise bargaining agreement that diminishes the role of volunteers. This has resulted in the resignations and sackings of some of the state’s most senior emergency service personnel. Heading into a dangerous bushfire season, over 330 years of combined emergency services staff experience has been lost. Now we have learnt that our Premier has paid the United Fire-

fighters Union (UFU) nearly half a million dollars of taxpayers’ money for their legal fees, while attempting to stop our volunteers from raising their own money via the community. With the current seasonal outlook for 2016-’17 forecasting another dangerous fire season, there must be no place for the toxicity that Daniel Andrews is ever so happy to force upon our fire services. The Andrews Government ought

to come clean and fix the mess they have created. Daniel Andrews needs to reassure the community that there, too, is no complacency on his behalf and no reduction in fire service resources to prepare and assist the community this summer. I have spoken with fire-fighters across the entire state. Many tell they fear the Andrews Government places huge uncertainty on the future of the CFA as one of the world’s largest and most effective emergency services. Perhaps Daniel Andrews forgets that, by nature, firefighters remain strong in the face of adversity and will not back down from his petulant pandering to the union. Volunteer firefighters have assured me that they are working
diligently to ensure they are bestprepared given the current circumstances. I have witnessed this preparedness first-hand when attending the Olinda and Sassafras-Ferny Creek ‘Be Fire Ready Ridge Top’ Community Safety Event, meeting with the Emerald SES and the Upper Beaconsfield CFA Open Day recently. To ensure our local fire services are best prepared to reduce the risk of fire, and response to emergencies in the community, I encourage all those who are unsure about their fire plan to contact their local brigade for some practical advice so that all can remain safe this fire season. I wish everyone a merry Christmas, happy 2017 and a safe fire season.

BUSINESSMAN James Robinson has been appointed as Chair of Yarra Ranges Tourism (YRT) for a three-year term. This follows Yarra Ranges Council’s endorsement at last week’s public council meeting. Mr Robinson’s appointment follows the resignation of former chair Mark Lucas, who was appointed as YRT Chair in 2013. Yarra Ranges Mayor Noel Cliff said Mr Robinson brought a wealth of knowledge and leadership experience to the role, thanks to his background as a chief executive officer of Mars New Zealand and his role in the development of YRT’s recent strategic direction and plan. “The role of YRT Chair is to ensure strong leadership of the Board of Yarra Ranges Tourism, and to lead the co-ordination of regional marketing initiatives that increase our region’s profile as a premier eco-tourism destination,” Cr Cliff said. Mr Robinson’s appointment begins on 1 January next year.

Jack's a triple-zero hero By Jodie Symonds A 10-YEAR-OLD Kallista boy has been deemed a community hero by Ambulance Victoria after he saved his mother’s life in August. Ambulance Victoria congratulated Jack Downard-Pengilly at Parliament House in Melbourne on Thursday 1 December. Jack was home from school on Wednesday 31 August, while his mother Jane Downard was outside cutting tree branches. While Ms Downard was cutting trees, a few gusts of wind caused another branch to fall, knocking another on the way and hitting her ankles; causing her to lose balance and smash her head on a rock beneath. Jack panicked at first, but gathered himself to call out to a neighbour to call triple-zero. He then came to his mother’s aid with a first aid kit and tended to her head wound until an ambulance arrived. Ms Downard was taken to the Angliss Hospital, and was treated for severe concussion, haematomas and two bleeds on her brain. Doctors had to staple her head back together, and she was kept in hospital for a week. “Jack’s actions showed great maturity beyond his 10 years of age and allowed Jane to get immediate help and aid in her recovery,” an Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said. Ms Downard said she was very proud of her son. “He is one of the most awesome 10-year-olds I know,” she said. “He didn’t realise that he would get recognition for it, but both of the paramedics that attended nominated him. “He found out later just how close

also congratulated for saving the life of Rowville man Angelko Juresko on Monday 2 May in Kallista. Mont Albert’s Ross Hamilton and his partner Claire Porter noticed a car slowing down and swerving unusually on the road. Ambulance Victoria said Mr Juresko was slumped behind the wheel of
the car while it was still moving. Mr Hamilton opened the door and leaned over to pull the handbrake to stop the car, and with the help of motorist Michael Slade, they began cardiopulmonary resuscitation while Ms Porter dialled triple-zero. When paramedics arrived they defi-
brillated Mr Juresko and got his heart started again. Ambulance Victoria CEO Tony Walker said this case in particular proved how vital CPR was to help save lives. “A medical emergency can occur anywhere and often when we least expect it,” Mr Walker said.

‘Christmas in the Hills’ Appeal Christmas is a wonderful opportunity to re-connect with those close to us, share with our children the magic of Christmas and enjoy the Australian summer. I feel very blessed that I am able to spend this special time with my family and friends. Unfortunately there are too many people within our community who at this time, rather than feeling joy, will experience loneliness, financial hardship and personal difficulties. With this in mind, I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know about Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service which is once again running the “Christmas in the Hills” appeal. Donations of non-perishable food items and gifts can be made at Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service, 1632 Burwood Hwy, Belgrave. Items will need to be delivered by Tuesday 20th December (Monday to Friday 9:00am—12:30pm). For further information please visit www.drers.org.au or phone 9754 7777. Help army of giving THE Salvation Army is urging the Yarra Ranges to support its critical Christmas Appeal, saying donations are desperately sought as the festive season approaches. Lieutenant Angela Locke from the Ferntree Gully Corps of the Salvation Army says they are seeking donations to be used as gifts they can give to children this Christmas. Lt Locke said there was a real need for presents for teenagers in the region, though they sought donations for ages from newborn to 18 years old. Meanwhile, Major Paul Hateley said: “The fact is the festive season can be a very difficult time for people who are facing a tough time, struggling financially or are alone.” To arrange a drop-off time for donations, please contact Lt Locke on 0402 464 206.

Letters He’s out of touch LAST year the electors of La Trobe received a fridge magnet ‘To Do list’ from our Federal Member of Parliament at considerable cost to the taxpayer. This year, in a climate of even greater budgetary restraint, we receive a most lavish calendar with Mr Jason Wood’s photo on every page. The cost of this is estimated to be between $100,000 and $200,000. Even if it is only $50,000, that is money that would be far better spent on schools, hospitals etc, etc. Mr Wood is completely out of touch with the realities of the citizens of La Trobe. Geoff Champion, Mt Dandenong.

Car carve-up continues MONBULK Fire Brigade has announced A.A. Recycling of the Yarra Ranges will continue its role as a major sponsor of the brigade. Under the arrangement, an estimated 100 vehicles have been supplied to the brigade, for training purposes, at no cost over the past four years. The ongoing sponsorship represents a coup for the brigade, with the relationship critical to not only rescue training, but for reduction in loss of life on our roads. The brigade attends about 40 road-rescues annually. They also recently handed over a certificate of appreciation to A.A. Recycling. Pictured are Monbulk members participating in rescue training. 162668
THE month of November was dedicated to ending violence towards women. Perhaps the month of December should be dedicated to ending violence to animals, because this is the time of the year when more innocent and inoffensive animals are violently killed than at any other time of the year. Each year, in December, our slaughterhouses are redder than old Santa’s coat as blood gushes from the throats of the millions of turkeys, piglets and other assorted animals mercilessly killed to celebrate the birth of the ‘Prince of Peace’. Isn’t it time we opened our eyes to the absurdity of celebrating a time of ‘peace on Earth’ by slaughtering millions of gentle and peaceful animals? Isn’t it time to recognise that violence to all beings is wrong? As a long-time vegan, I can assure you that no animal needs to die in order for us to be healthy and happy. Jenny Moxham, Monbulk.

IT’S time to write to Santa! SANTA receives thousands of letters from children all over Australia with requests for all sorts of things, including toys, pets and even world peace. Australia Post works with Santa, and his elves, at Christmas to make sure you receive a reply to your letter (you must live in Australia though). How do I write my letter? There are three ways you can write your letter to Santa: You can use the ‘Let’s write a letter to Santa!’ online interactive, found in the multimedia fun section of the Australia Post website. This is a fun way to write
your letter. There are instructions and a sample letter to help you. Or, write your letter on one of the decorative letter writing templates on the website, which can be printed out. Use your favourite pencil or pen and notepaper and just start writing. If you need some ideas for your letter, you can click on the sample letter. You can also tell your teacher about Santa Mail and maybe your whole class could write letters together. How do I address the envelope? Follow these simple steps to
address the envelope: Write Santa’s address clearly on the front of your envelope so your letter can be delivered to the right place. Santa’s special address is: Santa North Pole 9999 Place a 65c stamp on the front of your envelope. Turn the envelope over and write your name and address on the back of the envelope, so Santa knows where to send a reply. Post the letter in a street posting box or at an Australia Post retail outlet. For more details, visit www. auspost.com.au.

They’re a true family business AFTER 51 years as a family business, Ronald King’s in Lilydale and Croydon know a lot about service to achieve the best for their customers. In 1965, Mr Ronald King started his humble little Menswear Store in Main Street, Lilydale. Over the years, the company has built up a solid reputation for quality, style and variety. Ronald King’s stands for value and service for everyday clothes; for everyday people for all occasions. In the ‘70s and ‘80s, as sons David and Andrew influenced the fashion direction of their stories, the stores increased in
size and Matches Surfwear was developed. Both Ronald King Mensland and Matches Surfwear became iconic destinations in Croydon and Lilydale for menswear and youth fashion, for all ages. It has been 21 years since Andrew has headed up the business, introducing ladieswear at their large Croydon department store. When asked how the business had survived this long, Andrew said: “We are a team; we work together to help the customer.” “Over the many years, all our staff have been terrific and held up the values of family,” he said.
“We know our customers and they know us, and without our loyal customers we would be nothing. “Not forgetting that it is by the grace of God that we are all here.” Ron, at 88, still comes in most mornings and does deliveries. Along with Andrew and the team, including Jacob and Lauri from third generation, this is truly a family business. Ronald King Menswear is located at 121 Main Street, Croydon. For more information, contact (03) 9723 3673. Alternatively, 233-235 Main Street, Lilydale Contact (03) 9735 1639.

Two of the best go up By Steve Brown LYSTERFIELD’S Nathan Walsh and The Basin’s number three batsman Jake Best have been selected to represent the Victorian Country Cricket League in the Australian Country Cricket Championships held in Wollongong NSW on 2-11 January. Forty regional cricketers from all over Victoria attended trials at the MCG, Endeavour Hills and Bendigo, before 14 were selected in the final squad. The championships will comprise of five one-day games and five Twenty20 matches against WA, SA, NSW, QLD and East Asia Pacific. Walsh was the standout player in last year’s carnival in Mt Gambier SA, winning the Don Bradman trophy for the most runs in the competition and has been elevated to vice-captain. The 26-year-old Best will become the first Basin player to represent a Victorian Country X1 after a career with Premier club Casey South Melbourne which included 74 matches and two seasons as skipper. Last season he was selected to lead the South East Country Region Team of the Year after scoring almost 600 runs. Knoxfield’s Tom Boxell has been named as an emergency. Aboriginal art, culture traced By Peter Douglas BURRINJA Cultural Centre has something special in store for guests from Saturday 10 December to 12 February. Wominjeka: a New Beginning traces cultural communities and explores new modes of creative practice in South Eastern Aboriginal art and cultures. Featuring a diverse array of materials and techniques including painting, animal skin cloaks and textiles, bark and feather flowers, clay shields and digital prints - this landmark exhibition brings together specially commissioned work by five cross-generational early career artists; Georgia MacGuire, Aunty Marlene Gilson, Mitch Mahoney, Josh Muir and Raymond Young. As part of this project, each participating artist has been mentored by a senior artist including Maree Clarke, Lee Darroch, Ray Thomas and Peter Waples-Crow to explore the Koorie Heritage Trust’s significant Collections and to develop new work in dialogue with the past. Wominjeka: A New Beginning was originally produced to mark the 30th Anniversary of the Koorie Heritage Trust and to launch the Trust’s new high-profile premises at Federation Square in Melbourne. Exhibitions co-ordinator Angie Taylor said people should take the time to view this exhibition. “The exhibition is an opportunity to view some of the Koorie Heritage Trust’s precious collection items together with artwork by contempo-

Wominjeka around Victoria, and we are really delighted to be able to display the exhibition at Burrinja.” The exhibition will tour to four venues around Victoria in 2016. A range of public programs, an education resource and an exhibi-
tion catalogue will accompany the exhibition tour. Burrinja Cultural Centre is located at 351 Glenfern Road, Upwey. For more information, visit netsvictoria.org.au or www.burrinja.org. au.
THE Founder is a truly excellent biopic about the creator of an American institution - and the people he exploited in the process. In 1954, restless travelling salesman Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton) discovers a small but revolutionary burger joint run by the McDonald brothers (John Carroll Lynch and Nick Offerman). Kroc quickly turns this restaurant into a global phenomenon. The Founder stands among Steve Jobs, Lincoln and There Will Be Blood as one of the best, most thematically rich historical character studies in recent years. Through sumptuous cinematography and bright music, the film does, to an extent, glamorise McDonalds and its almost mythic significance in American culture, but at the same time never shies away from how borderline-sociopathic Croc could be in building his empire. This is a success story with victims - and not just America’s waistlines. Keaton is enthralling as Kroc, playing him with arrogant charisma and industrious cunning. Kroc is passionate about ambition and business, but also adept at manipulating or steamrolling people into submission to get his way. It’s great to see such an idea-driven mainstream film; the plot delves deep into the management and legal issues in fast food, but never feels dry. The pacing is near-perfect, progressing with a steady chain of challenges to overcome. The Founder is a compelling, energetic and gratifyingly honest retelling of McDonald's early history. - Seth Lukas Hynes

Pool fun in the sun THE weather was fine and the water cool as many in the community flocked to the opening of the Olinda Pool for summer 2016. There was plenty of entertain-
ment, fun and fine social opportunities for those who attended. ‘Mail’ photographer Greg Carrick was on the ground to capture the action.
Matt and Karina of Mount Dandenong, with daughter Jana, scored some snags for lunch. 162823
Olinda Community Pool volunteers Sacha Sullivan, John Abrahamsen and Duncan Brown kept things going. 162823

Knights in good position By Steve Brown FTGDCA LADDER-LEADERS Knoxfield travelled up the hill to take on Monbulk and their batsmen made it hard going for the Hawks’ bowlers. Jack Taylor top scored for the Knights with 101 not out, while Adith Sundaresh (95) and skipper Tom Boxell (65) both fell with the score on 199 having scored a 141-run partnership. Matt Train (50no) then paired with Taylor to put on an unbroken 157 runs. With only four wickets to fall for the day, Beau Newman stood tall for the Hawks, taking 3/57. The Hawks have found some form with the bat, although this will be an uphill battle against The Knights. Cody Morris hit his second century for the season as Eildon Park lost only six wickets in the day against Belgrave. The Panthers completed their 80 overs posting 6/284 with Ryan Hicks (43), George Harrison (37) and Shane Cosstick (30) all among the runs. Bowling spoils for Belgrave were light-on and the Magpies will be looking to their elder statesmen to lead the way in the run chase. Upper Ferntree Gully hosted Ferntree Gully in their local derby and the home team finished the day on 8/276. Paul Henry (81) and Shane Luck (59) were the best performed for the Kings with the bat while the wickets for the Blues were shared around. Upwey batted first in their game against The Basin for a total of 243. Steve Gannell (65no), Damian Berenato (51) and Darren Spence (31) kept the Tigers on track despite an amazing five run-outs for the innings.
The Bears will be hoping that next week their batsmen are as on fire as their fielders were this week. In a total contrast, both Mountain Gate and Knox Gardens have been dismissed on day one in their clash at Argylle Way. The Gators were dismissed for 81 in 33 overs with Adam Wild taking 6/44 and Zac Flintoff 3/16 for the Falcons while John Rozakis managed 30 with the bat. Knox Gardens were then in trouble at 8/54 before Matt Young 36 and Adam Wild 35 got them to 128 and a first inning lead of 47. Josh Lindner took five wickets for Mountain Gate. In DeCoite Shield, Steven (114) and Andrew (113) Devenish launched Johnson Park to 5/316 against South Belgrave, Knoxfield made 8/311 against Olinda and St Johns Tecoma hit 242 off Lysterfield’s attack. In the final game, Rowville were dismissed for 163 including 3 run outs against FTG Footballers. Go Lateisha! By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS YARRA Ranges Athletics had four athletes competing for Victoria at this weekend’s Australian All Schools Championships. An event that is easily the biggest single event on the Australian sporting calendar, it brings together the best secondary school athletes from around Australia. The championships are also widely regarded as a stepping stone to further athletics honours, including Commonwealth and Olympic Games. Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes Lateisha Willis, Tayleb Willis and Georgia Laven competed on the Saturday, day two of the championships, Georgia and Sam Norton also compete on day three. Lateisha stole the show with a dominant win in her 100m hurdles final, retaining the title she has held for the past two years. Brother Tayleb was not to be outdone with a hard-fought bronze medal in his 90m hurdles. Lateisha finished an excellent fifth in her 100m behind sprint sensation Riley Day and Georgia Laven finished tenth in a tough 1500m final. The weekend before, the club had two athletes, Kiara Flavel and Maddie laven, competing at the Australian Primary School
Ella Strudley during her 4x400m relay. 162808
Championships in Sydney. Both Kiara and Maddie ran personal bests in their 800m heats to qualify for the final. Kiara ran a brave race to finish second and Maddie not far behind in eighth place. An awesome effort from two talented athletes. The club hosted another round of the AV Shield at Morrison Reserve on Saturday afternoon. Sensational weather, warm and calm, provided perfect conditions for some excellent perfomances from athletes visiting fromthroughout the eastern suburbs of Mebourne. Full results will be available at athsvic.org.au early in the week. The little athletes enjoyed great morning conditions for their round of athletics.
Finn in full flight during his 200m race. 162808 Awards were handed out to athletes who had recorded four or more PBs in the previous round. Congratulations to those athletes and the many more who recorded one or more PBs of the past few weeks. Great to see all our athletes improving week to week. There are only two more rounds of Little Athletics before Christmas. Next week is Saturday morning followed by the final round the following Friday night.
Mixed bag for Monbulk bowlers MONBULK BOWLS TUESDAY MONBULK'S pennant teams had mixed results. Division 1 had a lot of trouble against a strong Croydon team; they are hoping to turn it around this week with a home game against bottom placed Boronia. Division 3 and 4 had huge wins; well done guys! Next match for Division 3 is against second-placed Bayswater at home and Division 4 has Ferntree Gully at home, both sides have a big chance of upsetting higher placed teams. Division 1: Monbulk v Croydon at Croydon - lost 7937; Max Cobb lost 7-31, Peter Koomen lost 11-28, Jenny Holmes lost 19-20. Division 3: Monbulk v Mooroolbark at Monbulk - won 82-38; Jan Moore won 33-8, Alan Clerke lost 18-23, Dave Moore won 31-7. Division 4: Monbulk v Don-
vale at Monbulk - won 88-36; Lorraine McLaren won 28-14, Maria Baas won 26-9, Eric Furby won 34-12. SATURDAY Division 2 had a solid but not outstanding win against lowly placed Eltham at home. Eltham adapted to the green well and, at the end, there were only 11 shots between the two teams. The win elevated them to third - great effort, guys! Division 2 will play bottomplaced Donvale at Donvale this week. This is a big chance to consolidate their position in the four. Division 4 had a close game against Lilydale, going down in the end by only two shots. This was a great effort, playing away from home. Next game is at home against Warburton. This week’s performance
shows they should be competitive and hopefully get over the top of Warburton. Division 4 will no doubt bounce back from their top of the table defeat. Playing at Box Hill this team cannot wait for the return leg to have a bit of revenge. Playing at home against lowly Ashburton, they should be able to bounce with a victory. Division 2: Monbulk v Eltham at Monbulk - won 8574: Eric Markham won 20-17, Andrew Bell lost 17-19, Bruce Cameron won 30-18, Brian Smith lost 18-20. Division 4: Monbulk v Lilydale at Lilydale - lost 82-80, Chris Titcumb lost 18-23, Peter Francis lost 14-28, Lorraine McLaren won 29-14, Shorty Hick won 19-17. Division 8: Monbulk v Box Hill RSL at Box Hill RSL - lost 47-31; Alan Hamilton lost 1032, Doug Elliot won 21-15.
Last Chance Saloon at Emerald By Dennis Fuller EMERALD GOLF WITH ‘Big Yella’ shining beautifully in the sky at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday it was the ‘Last Chance Saloon’ for members to win a monthly medal on the Emerald course. Some really good scores came in early as the course looked a picture and played beautifully.
When all looked settled, and a smug look or two could be seen, Ian Scott (27) rolled in with the usual boast of good score. But this time he was not speaking with a forked tongue. His nett 64 eclipsed the scores of all others and the medal was his. The ever consistent Peter Glasscock (13) was the next in with 65 which was good
enough for bragging rights in A Grade while Scott ruled the roost in B Grade. The best of the great unwashed were Mark Starick (13) on 67, Ross Martin (13) 68, Ken Hill (17) and Leigh Morison (17) 69; while Dean Shannon (13), John Keys (17) and Philip Crossley (21) all played to their handicaps for 70. Starick was nearest the pin on the fourth, Hill the seventh.

Motoring Hovering on law’s edge THE RACV is calling for an overhaul of the legislation covering motorised and non-motorised recreational devices, such as hover boards and unicycles, labelling the current rules confusing and potentially unsafe. A report by the RACV has found a string of inconsistencies in Victorian regulations covering Segways, hover boards, motorised unicycles, electric roller skates and skateboards, motorised eskies and chilldren’s toys and golf carts. RACV Manager Roads and Traffic, Dave Jones, said the current regulations were flawed to the point they could compromise safety. “Aside from the confusing component of the law, we also found that with some of the devices, weight limits were often not specified, age restrictions were rarely given and most devices did not provide safety information or even mention the safety gear required or recommended. “Currently, most motorised recreational devices are defined as vehicles; however, they can’t be fitted with a number plate or registered. “This means it is illegal for them to be used on public roads, nature strips, parks and footpaths.”
Mr Jones said the evidence was that motorised recreational devices were growing in popularity. “With Christmas just around the corner, many of these devices will again be seen as the must-have item under the tree this year. “Therefore, it is pressing that we have clear guidance and regulations that ensure the safety of the user and other road users sooner rather than later. “We must also consider that these emerging transport devices could one day provide an alternative to short car trips, so it is imperative the legislation is rock solid.” Mr Jones said a fall or impact with a car while on a recreational device could be as serious as one from a bicycle. “Anyone who uses these recreational devices should not underestimate the safety issues,” he said. “If parents are buying them for their kids, we recommend they buy the safety equipment at the same time. “Always purchase approved helmet, knee and elbow pads, and a good tip is to store the safety equipment with the device to make it easy for children to

Satnav a special addition to this special edition twin exhaust system and a unique exterior design treatment. The dual exhaust lifts the 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine’s outputs to 135kW of power (+2kW) and 235Nm of torque (+4Nm), while maintaining Euro 5 emissions compliance and 7.9-litres/100km fuel economy. On the outside, the sports-mesh radiator grille, halogen headlamp inserts, exterior mirror casings, boot-lip spoiler and rear-bumper diffuser are finished in gloss-black to match the sports alloy rims. Front and rear corner parking sensors are also standard, while specific RZ decals on the lower rear door and boot lid enhance the car’s sporty personality.

TOYOTA has launched an upgraded Camry RZ Special Edition, with satellite navigation now added to the standard equipment list. Last offered in the middle of this year, the Camry RZ was an almost immediate sell-out, with all 1100 examples finding homes within weeks of the limited-build model going on sale. The new Camry RZ Special Edition is restricted to just 700 units, this time featuring satellite navigation with SUNA real time traffic updates, a seven-inch touch-screen interface, six-speaker Digital Audio (DAB+) and voice recognition. These upgrades come on top of the extra equipment already added to the Camry RZ, representing total additional value approaching $5000, while this Special Edition model is priced just $2700 above the Camry Altise on which it is based. Those additional features include 18-inch gloss-black alloy wheels shod with high-performance low-profile tyres, a sports suspension package,
