Drunk driver explains flight from Geelong:

Racists scared me out of town By Cam Lucadou-Wells Racists forced an unlicensed Dandenong man to drink-drive his way out of Geelong, a court has heard. Eric Kanyi fled a night out in the city after other revellers “hated me because of my (dark) colour”, he told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. “They did a lot of stuff,“ Kanyi said. “I don’t know the streets of Geelong. I don’t know anyone and my friend was too dizzy (to drive).” Kanyi’s night ended when police saw him climbing out of the driver’s seat and into the back of the car after after pulling him over on 5 August, the court head. Kanyi, who had never held a licence, blew .167.

He claimed his passenger was too sick to drive. Police told the court the Dandenong man had been drinking with a friend since morning before consuming up to five stubbies at a Geelong nightclub that night. Kanyi had been disqualified from driving in 2015 for a high-reading drink-driving conviction. He told the court he drank only occasionally since recently becoming a father and never drove. The Geelong weekend was the exception, Kanyi said. Magistrate Pauline Spencer told him his excuses would be no comfort if he killed someone while drink-driving. “You’re a father now and you’re still driving at .167,“ she said. Continued page 6

$3m heritage headache after sale failure
Sell gaol for $1, City told By Luke Voogt City Hall should sell Geelong Gaol for $1 after Barwon Health abandoned plans to buy the site, according to ex-mayor Darryn Lyons. The token value could at least help the council rid itself of the gaol’s ongoing maintenance costs, Mr Lyons said. “I’d sell it for a dollar to someone who could come up with a great idea - it bleeds the purse.” In July City Hall entered negotiations with Barwon Health to buy the gaol amid a maintenance backlog reaching $3 million. But the Indy revealed last week that Barwon Health had backed out, citing heritage constraints on the site. Mr Lyons said some of the gaol had fallen into “disrepair”. “If you went in to some parts you’d be taking
your life into your own hands.” Mr Lyons said easing heritage laws for the “21st century” could help find a new life for the gaol. “It’s an amazing building that could be turned into money.” Mr Lyons cited Bendigo Gaol, now a 1000-seat theatre, as a successful repurposing of a similar heritage building. Geelong Gaol could house anything from “another Little Creatures” to restaurants, he said. “I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on it myself - I have one of the biggest private (photography) collections in the country.” Mr Lyons said the previous council received a number of proposals for the gaol when he was mayor. “There was everything from foundations to recording studios. They were batted away time and
time again by officers really not willing to do the work. “In this city there aren’t many people who think outside the box and are willing to work with local entrepreneurs.” Mr Lyons said the gaol would deteriorate further without a public-private partnership. “Unless you can make it efficient it becomes a relic of the past. Unfortunately, I think we’ll still be talking about it in 10 years’ time.” Mr Lyons said allowing the Rotary Club of Geelong to continue using the gaol as a “cash cow” for fundraisers while paying “peppercorn rent” was unviable. “As much as I admire what Rotary do, they’ve never been able to come up with any sustainable plans. “The city is not getting a great deal.”

Fire warning Hoses could run dry or merely trickle during local bushfire emergencies this summer, Barwon Water has warned. Managing director Joe Adamski said the authority was unable to guarantee supplies during fires, so it was “timely” as summer began to remind residents they should consider an independent supply as part of their fire plans.
Sweets ‘swiped’ Police are hunting a sweet-toothed woman who allegedly stole confectionery from a central Geelong store. 3:46.63, its best time of the season. They placed third but were disqualified before successfully appealing the decision and finishing second. Moore tagged outside of the transition zone but officials later found an American racer sitting in her lane had blocked her path. Moore experienced “a clash of emotions” as she took the podium for her second silver medal. “I was happy and excited but it was sort of overshadowed by all the drama in the relay.”
A spinal virus left Moore a paraplegic at the age of six. After regaining some leg strength she was diagnosed with incomplete paraplegia. Moore began athletics as a teenager in 2007 at the suggestion of the mother of Australian Paralympic gold-medallist Richard Colman. A year later she won the Victoria State Championships’ 100-metre race. Moore debuted at the Paralympics in Beijing aged 16, winning silver in the 4x100m relay with the same team as in Rio.
Crash cash The “poor crash history” of a notorious stretch of road west of Geelong has forced the State Government to build a $2.5 million roundabout, according to Western Victoria Region MP Gayle Tierney. Ms Tierney announced the completion of construction this week to improve safety at the intersection of Midland Highway and Fyansford-Gheringhap Road, which records 14,000 vehicle movements daily.

Waurn Ponds’ cut hours ‘work for police patrols’
By Luke Voogt
By Luke Voogt Waurn Ponds residents have likely failed to secure extended counter hours at their police station following a public forum on Wednesday night. “It’s our intention to continue with the opening hours as they are,” Geelong Acting Inspector Michael Cruse told the Indy on Thursday. The reduced Waurn Ponds station times allowed 200 extra patrol hours during a threemonth trial period, he said. The extra hours equalled 25 two-police patrol shifts, Act Insp Cruse told the forum. “Initially there were some concerns around the opening hours but once we were able to explain the extra patrols they could see the rationale for our decision.” Act Insp Cruse said police would continue to deploy from the station while the counter was closed. Other Geelong stations would answer all calls to Waurn Ponds and direct police on patrols in the area where they were needed, he said. “But if you need police at your location call triple zero - it’s the way we dispatch all calls.” Act Insp Cruse said Victoria Police Western Regional Command would make a decision on the station hours in coming weeks. Waurn Ponds Senior Sergeant Angelo Ferrara said the station’s strategy was paying dividends. “For the size our station our members are really doing well.” Waurn Ponds was seventh in the state for producing briefs of evidence for court, Sen Sgt Ferrara said. “To be ranked seventh in the state out of all the 24-hour police stations is quite significant. We catch crooks by being out on the road not sitting behind a desk.”
ON THE ROAD: Senior Sergeant Angelo Ferrara says Waurn Pond’s patrol strategy is working. But South Barwon MP Andrew Katos said local police should not have to choose. “I understand the police’s position but they are under-resourced. “They should be able to do those patrol hours and offer counter service.” Mr Katos said the station should remain open

The dispute between Kane Constructions and the CMFEU is unlikely to affect Geelong’s first home game, according to Cats chief executive officer Brian Cook. Mr Cook was confident Kane could finish stage four of Simonds Stadium prior to the Cats facing the Bulldogs on 19 May. “I’m naturally an optimist,” he said, “so it’s my best guess.” The Cats’ website said the company expects to complete the $74 million grandstand shortly before the Cats face the reigning premiers in May. Work resumed Tuesday after 150 workers walked off the job last Friday and had a scheduled day off on Monday. The workers joined a number of CFMEU strikes at Kane sites across the site last week. Mr Cook said he and Geelong’s 52,000 members hoped both parties could settle their differences. “We’re kind of the meat in the sandwich. We just need to be patient and tolerant and let the parties work through the issues.” A CFMEU spokesperson said Kane workers were lawfully engaged in a protected industrial action in line with the Fair Work Act The union called on Kane to sign its new enterprise bargaining agreement. “It’s been signed by the overwhelming majority of the industry with a few companies holding out,” the spokesperson said. “The workers there just want to get on with the job.” Western Victoria MP Simon Ramsay called on the State Government to help negotiate the dispute. “Last Friday’s full day of industrial action and the further delays have cast a shadow over the Geelong Football Club’s first home game,” he said. “They’ve also put 150 workers’ jobs at risk.”

And who’s the self-important lady about town who tried jumping a queue at Ocean Grove’s post office? She might hold a high opinion of herself but it certainly wasn’t shared by the lesser mortals waiting patiently and politely in line. Our queue-jumper exposed her towering selfregard when she burst into the post office and rushed straight to the counter. “It’s raining outside and I’m a very important person,” she declared for all to hear. Clearly, the lady behind the counter held a very different opinion. “You’ll have to move to the back of the queue,” she responded flatly. Our chastened interloper begrudgingly complied, much to the satisfaction of the queue members. And full marks to the postal staffer. News Corp papers have maintained their rage against Victoria’s “Minister for Freebies”, AKA Lara MP John Eren (pictured). His admittedly long, long and growing list of gifts from numerous sources was back in the spotlight this week, barely a fortnight after his return to work from a near-fatal heart attack. Mr Eren said all the goodies were properly documented on the parliamentary register, of
course, just as he did with a previous round of freebies coverage earlier this year. But anyone glumly awaiting another paltry haul of Christmas jocks and socks, like Double Take, would be forgiven a pang of jealously at their MP’s overstuffed stocking. The items included everything from a $2000 mountain bike to a Mt Buller ski package and rock concert tickets. On and on the list went to finally arrive at a total of 110 gifts. And it’s not even Christmas yet! Clearly, our Minister for Sport and Tourism must be considered not naughty but nice. And just like certain sections of the media, the state opposition also tried wringing maximum value from Mr Eren’s freebies. Liberal MP Simon Ramsay must have almost burst a lung this week when he read to the Upper House a 143-word sentence documenting most of the gifts. After a very deep breath, Mr Ramsay arrived at his point. “My question is: are there any other gifts received that have not been put on the members register?” “Order,” fired back the president of the house. “I strike that one out. It is not a constituency question.” So where did the gifts come from if not Mr Eren’s many electoral and ministerial constituents? Santa? Mars? The only one out of order here seems to be the president.

Take on lobbies, residents urged By Luke Voogt
GOBBLE GOBBLE: Yvonne Moore with her "wonderful" prize and, in the inset, the turkey to find in five of today's ads. (Lindsay Kelley)
Turkey message bowls over Yvonne A mysterious phone message blinked at Bell Post Hill’s Yvonne Moore when she arrived home on Tuesday afternoon. “I’d just walked in from a hard day at bowls, the 81-year-old window said. “I looked down, saw I had a message and thought I’d better find out what it was about. Yvonne pressed ‘messages’. A voice told her to phone the Geelong Indy. Yvonne dialled the number, waiting for her mystery caller to respond. “Gobble gobble! the voice on the end of the line finally shouted. “You’ve won Talkin’ Turkey. Yvonne was stunned. “That’s a thrill, it’s wonderful news, she cried. “Golly, I can’t believe it. I love turkey, it will be wonderful. Yvonne was one of five winners in week three
of Geelong’s favourite Christmas game. Talkin’ Turkey features five turkeys hidden in separate ads over five weeks. Entrants name the businesses to go into the draw for one of five succulent turkeys from A Cut Above Family Butcher. Yvonne was glad she took up the Talkin’ Turkey challenge. “It’s a good competition, she said. “The turkeys take a bit of finding but I thought, ‘blow it, I’ll have a go at this’. Talkin’ Turkey is in the Indy again today as part of the paper’s Five Weeks of Christmas promotion. Entries, including the entrant’s name and phone number, can be emailed to indy@geelongindy.com.au, left in a mesage on Talkin’ Turkey hotline number 5249 6725 or lodged in person at the Indy on the first floor of 74-78 Moorabool St, Geelong.
Geelong needs a ratepayers’ association to counter the growing power of “self-interest groups, according to former MP Peter Loney. “The voices of business and lobby groups in Geelong have become too strong, Mr Loney said. “The overwhelming majority of ratepayers do not have a voice and I think this is a huge gap. The former Lara MP said residents had lost their voice to groups like the Committee for Geelong. “(The committee) lobbies on behalf of property developers and businesses. It doesn’t lobby for ordinary ratepayers. “We know the council falls over itself to talk to the Committee for Geelong. They’re not so prepared to talk to the ordinary ratepayer in the street. “Every time a minister, state or federal, comes to Geelong they meet the Committee for Geelong. We have a powerful elite who have immediate access to government while ordinary people in this community find it very difficult to talk to council. In 2012 Geelong lawyer Andrew Senia and others formed Geelong Ratepayers and Residents Association. The association “dissipated a few years later when Mr Senia retired to concentrate on his legal business, he said. “We felt there was a need for it then and we still feel there is a need for it now but somebody needs to take the reins. Mr Senia agreed with Mr Loney that Geelong had too many lobby groups. “I don’t know of any strong voice for the in-

dividual ratepayers - they’ve become the silent majority. The call for residents to have a greater say in Geelong follows a State Government-commissioned Citizens’ Jury recommending reduced democratic representation at City Hall. The 100-member group recommended scrapping the public mayoral vote, reducing the number of councillors from 13 to 11 and cutting the number of wards from 12 to four. Mr Loney said he was disappointed with the recommendation, saying the jury should have “been empowered“ to recommend increasing councillor numbers beyond 12. “We have one of the poorest council-to-citizen representation ratios in Australia. “The big squabble should not be about the model of council that we have but that the ordinary citizens get a reasonable say in their affairs.

The next meeting of Council will be held on Tuesday 13 December 2016 at 5.30pm at the Council Conference and Reception Centre, City Hall, Geelong. Enter through the Little Malop Street entrance. This meeting is open to the public.
CENTRAL GEELONG MARKETING COMMITTEE MEETING
Leigh has worked for the City for 30 years and has extensive experience and knowledge of operating plant and machinery in the maintenance of our parks and gardens. Leigh works in the East Zone of our city, an area that encompasses Leopold, Drysdale, Clifton Springs, Indented Head, St Leonards, Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads.
JOHNSTONE PARK CONCEPT PLAN AND RAIN GARDEN PROJECT
Our Parks and Gardens team look after green spaces across our municipality; planting, slashing, mowing and irrigating are just some of the key tasks carried out by our people. Leigh enjoys working outdoors, operating plant and machinery such as tractors and working with his colleagues who have become close friends. His typical day involves working alone or in a small group usually in a large reserve or at a roadside slashing grass. Some days he can be found using a loader to move soil, mulch or fallen trees.
The City of Greater Geelong and Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning are working together as the Revitalising Central Geelong Partnership to plan and deliver improvements to Johnstone Park that will support central Geelong’s growing residential and working population.
Leigh shares his favourite green space: “Harvey Park in St Leonards has big shaded trees and a safe swimming beach, is close to cafes and a beach front hotel, and is a good fishing spot.”
The Johnstone Park Concept Plan has been prepared to guide future improvements within and surrounding the park.

Homeless recovering alcoholic and drug addict Stu wants a hand up, not a hand out. The 43-year-old is one of many homeless people who are struggling to overcome their addiction due to a lack of long-term rehabilitation programs in Geelong. “It kind of gets to a point where I lose all hope,” said Stu, who wanted his surname withheld. “I’ve pretty much been through all the homeless shelters - they’re an absolute cesspool. It’s easier to get drugs in those places than out on the street.” Stu said his situation was his own fault but he was working hard to get his life back on track. “I’ve made mistakes but that doesn’t mean I’m any less of a human than the next person.” “Being an alcoholic is like being a Catholic you never stop being one, just sometimes you’re not practising.” When the Indy first spoke to Stu in September he had completed stage one of the Salvation Army’s rehabilitation program - six-nights of withdrawal. A combination of renovations, bed shortages and an administrative bungle meant he missed out the following 21-day stage two of the program. “There were two beds available and I was the third person,” he said. Three months later and Stu is still waiting for a spot in the program. “Basically, I’ve got to go through the whole process again,” he said. He has managed to stay off drugs but has lapsed with his drinking. “It’s kind of a day-by-day situation,” he said. Salvation Army drug specialist Neil Loxston said the service has three government-funded rehabilitation centres in Corio for each stage of its program. Patients often take addiction medication during stage one, leaving them listless, Mr Loxston said. “They’ve got to be as clean as a whistle before they go in to stage two. It’s too dangerous to do cold-turkey.” The Salvos’ facilities for stage one and two have six beds but because stage one is 15 days shorter it
has a higher turnover rate. This meant vulnerable patients would often be back on the streets without the chance to complete stage two, Mr Loxston said. “We often get people who are very motivated but there are not enough beds, which increases their risk of relapsing.” The salvos’ 12-week stage three program has three beds, while the only other local long-term facility is the Christian-based rehabilitation centre Foundation 61 in Mt Duneed. “They receive no government funding for what they do,” Mr Loxston said. Foundation 61 has 15 beds but could only house 12 people due to a lack of funding. It has long been operating at full capacity. To access long-term government-funded services the homeless have to travel to centres in Melbourne, which have very long waiting lists, Mr Loxston said. “They don’t want to leave their families long.” Mr Loxston said people like Stu need longterm services in Geelong. “He’s put his hand up and acknowledged he’s got himself into the situation he’s in. To not give him all the help we can is very disappointing.” Stu has been an alcoholic for 30 years and a drug addict for 20 after an abusive childhood. The father of two and grandfather once had a house in west Melbourne and high-paying job at a bank. But his life went off the rails when his partner kicked him out about five years ago. “I can’t believe the mum of my kids put up with me for so long,” he said. With the lack of support services in Geelong, Stu said homeless addicts were more likely to commit crimes than attempt to beat their addiction. “If they get caught least they’ll get three square meals a day. They’ll get fit and a roof over their head.” Stu said funding a rehabilitation service in Geelong could save the Government’s money down the track. “We all know how much it costs the taxpayer to incarcerate someone. It’s not sustainable and it’s only going to get worse. “There needs to be a change in thinking.”
More speak out on family violence Reported family violence incidents in Geelong have increased by more than half in the last five years, according to the latest data from Crime Statistics Agency CSA. Incidents rose from 862 per 100,000 people in 2011-2012 to 1384 in 2015-2016. But CSA researcher Paul Sutherland said awareness of the issue and media campaigns could have increased reporting rates. “There are a whole range of factors that could have affected that result.” Geelong’s figures were 7 per cent worse than the state average, which had a similar increase during the five-year period. One in five family violence incidents throughout the state involved alcohol, while this number was slightly lower in Geelong, according to data
prepared for the Indy. CSA’s chief statistician Fiona Dowsley said alcohol increased the likelihood of a severe incident. “Where perpetrator alcohol use was recorded, police were more likely to record that the perpetrator had choked the victim or made threats to kill the victim.” Recently City Hall and a number of partners launched a strategic plan to address violence against women and children. City General Manager Community Life Linda Quinn said the plan would target family violence through prevention, intervention and response. “The impact of violence can be devastating for women and families and for the whole community,” she said. 9 GEELONG INDY Friday, 9 December, 2016

FUTURE: Concept designs for the Geelong NDIA Headquarters
Geelong firm wins big on NDIA job By Luke Voogt Geelong development company Techne Group has secured the tender for the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) headquarters at the Carlton Hotel. Company chairman Michael Vickers-Willis described winning the right to build the headquarters as a privilege. “It’s been a long journey but we’re pleased to have this positive outcome in the end,” he said. Mr Vickers-Willis said the development would help make Geelong an international centre for excellence in the insurance and administrative industries. “We’re in an outstanding location positioned between TAC and Worksafe.” The hotel had long been rumoured to be the site of the headquarters, but a Federal Government statement made it official last week. The statement said about 85 per cent of the
headquarter’s construction workforce would come from Geelong. “The project is structured so there is maximum positive economic benefit for Geelong,” Mr Vickers-Willis said. The accessible and energy-efficient building will be the workplace of 450 NDIA employees and the home of the Federal Department of Human Services, Mr Vicker-Willis said. “In total there will be in excess of 800 permanent long-term positions.” The nine-level development incorporates the heritage-listed Carlton Hotel, and will retain and renovate features of its facade. The government will invest $120m in the headquarters, after selecting Techne Group’s proposal in an open public tender. The Victorian Government contributed $25 million to assist in the relocation of the NDIA head office from Canberra to Geelong.
At least 100 new cops will arrive in Geelong during the next four years following a state-wide recruiting push, Police Minister Lisa Neville has promised. “The Chief Commissioner has made it clear that Geelong is under pressure,” said Ms Neville, who is also the Bellarine MP. “Geelong will get additional frontline police as determined by the new staff allocation model.” A Government source this week confirmed Geelong would have 100 frontline officers and “probably more” from 3135 new Victorian police. The source said the number took likely attrition figures into account. The boost follows the Indy last month reporting a drop in Geelong police numbers during the past year despite a 20 per cent crime surge across the city. Geelong lost one equivalent-full-time officer between September 2015 and 2016 despite the Andrews Government announcing an increase of 155 across the state. The Government funded 17 extra police custody officers for Geelong during the same time. Last week the Andrews Government announced an additional 2729 frontline officers over four years, also allowing for attrition. “Combined with the 406 additional police fast-tracked from this year’s budget, we will have 3135 recruits in the pipeline over the next four years,” Ms Neville said. The Police Minister declined to announce the exact number of police Geelong would receive. “This will be a matter for Victoria Police,” she said. But coalition MP Simon Ramsay said the boost would come too late.
BOOST: Police Minister Lisa Neville “Victoria’s population has grown by over 200,000 people since Daniel Andrews took over,” said the Western Victoria MP. “We’ve spent more than a year calling for additional police numbers that reflect this growth.” Mr Ramsay said the boost was only part of the solution to “the crime wave hitting Geelong and the Bellarine”. He repeated calls for harsher penalties for youth offenders. On Tuesday morning the State Government announced it would introduce a number of new laws targeting youth offenders. The laws would include strict curfews, supervision requirements and increased maximum sentencing in youth detention.

Letters No vote, better future Darryn Lyons wants us to return to a directly elected mayoral process (Geelong Indy, 2 December). He seems to have forgotten the findings of the independent commission of inquiry while he was mayor - findings such as a deep-seated culture of bullying, poor governance and a deep malaise affecting council’s capacities to plan and deliver high quality services to the community. I certainly want something better in the future. Helen James Geelong West
Gordon liquidity inflated Gayle Tierney used her first round of announcements to continue in the incompetent footsteps of her predecessor. The Training and Skills Minister poured $14.6 million into The Gordon (Geelong Indy, 2 December), claiming it would mean the provider could “hit the ground running”. This is the second year in a row the Andrews Labor Government has artificially inflated TAFE’s bottom line in time for the end-of-year AuditorGeneral’s annual audit. In December last year the government handed out $160 million in cash grants to TAFEs to improve their short-term liquidity in time for the review. Deceiving Victorians on the true financial state of the TAFE system by artificially inflating The Gordon’s bottom line is not the solution to two years of falling revenue from declining enrolments. Youth unemployment is as high as 18 per cent in some areas but Daniel Andrews and Gayle Tierney have no interest in making sure young people can get the skills they need to get a job. This latest round of cash is being handed out with no expectation that students will receive anything in return. Meanwhile, Labor refuses to release reports detailing the extent of declining enrolments. It doesn’t come close to passing the pub test and does nothing to secure the long-term viability of TAFE to ensure we are helping people get the skills they need to find employment and help industry flourish. Steph Ryan MP Shadow minister for training, skills and apprenticeships
Men trump women Yet again Pastor Frank Lowry hit the nail on the head with his interpretation of the US election result (Geelong Indy, 18 November). How could a morally bankrupt female such as Hillary Clinton, with her views that women should control their own fertility, hope to beat an upstanding member of society such as Donald Trump, a man whose past life can only be described as bordering on the saintly. Indeed, many Americans believe that the sooner he is put on the first step to beatification the better. It is a true reflection on not just American society but also our own that anyone can say and do anything they want and that as long as they say sorry afterward they can get away with it again and again. As long as they are male, of course! Russell Greenwood East Geelong

drews government’s part-time council administration is content confining its role to seeking soft vision-statement options and yet more erstwhile community conversations, aside from day-to-day compulsory operational obligations. Also below acceptable accountability levels are a genteel G21, Committee for Geelong’s life-ofRiley travel reports and the CBD’s list of indictments, for which the underwhelming Geelong Chamber of Commerce must take a fair share of ownership. Given current local governance big-ticket selectivity, the aforementioned advocacy groups should rigorously put the case for: • a CBD 11am to 11pm non-essential heavy vehicle curfew; • resuscitating CBD ghetto strips; • viable free parking; • a 24/7 privately funded Yarra Street Pier and convention centre and marina; • a full-time nine-member board publicly elected to a four-year term to replace council; • equal billing at Simonds Stadium for soccer, cricket, music and arts; • completion of GPAC’s redevelopment; • international accreditation for Avalon Airport and;
Youth crime coalition’s fault The papers say Labor was warned about youth crime years ago, implying that Labor can be largely blamed for tensions in the youth justice system. An Ombudsman’s report on this matter came only one month before Labor lost the election to the Baillieu Government. Why didn’t the Coalition Government act on the report? This, coupled with the Coalition’s destruction of the TAFE system via massive funding cuts, could go a long way to explain the problems affecting the disaffected youth of today. Bruce Holmes Portarlington
Season for safety As the festive season kicks off and our social calendars begin to fill up, it’s timely to remind everyone to take extra care on the roads. Many of us will travel long distances in the coming weeks for Christmas get-togethers and we know the roads become increasingly busy during this time of year. It’s critical that everyone plans their journeys, makes good decisions and looks out for each other on the roads to ensure we’re all present for our loved ones this Christmas. In the excitement of festivities it can be difficult to keep track of how many alcoholic drinks are consumed but as little as one drink impairs judgement. Anyone planning on drinking any alcohol should plan a way home that doesn’t involve driving. Some of us will travel on unfamiliar roads this summer so it’s important we all slow down, take regular breaks and drive to the weather and road conditions. Let’s all work together to keep each other safe so we can all enjoy Christmas with our families and friends. Joe Calafiore TAC chief executive officer

FINALLY FRIDAY
Greatest Show rolls on into town By Luke Voogt Drysdale had an exclusive sneak peek at the iconic Mark Holden’s new concert, The Greatest Show on Earth, on Wednesday. “As they ought to,” Holden told the Indy this week. “It’s sort of ground zero for this story.” The former Australian Idol was on the Bellarine Peninsula this week crafting the storytelling play about his family’s St Leonards circus which travelled the area from 1890 onwards. “This is before there was even radio,” he said, “back in the days of horse and wagon. “The thing that I love about them was that they were all musicians and I’ve inherited that. It’s something that has lasted in our family for as long as there have been people in Victoria.” The play features characters like one-legged trapeze artist and circus founder Adolphus Holden. “He lost his leg in a railroad accident as a teenager,” Holden said. Adolphus had a daughter and 11 sons who all played in the circus band and travelled Victoria in a horse-drawn “bandwagon”. Holden made his name in the mid-1970s as the good-looking, carnation-carrying pop star with hits like Never Gonna Fall in Love Again and Last Romance. He would later gain fame - and notoriety - as a judge on Australian Idol and a contestant on Dancing with the Stars. Holden said his new concert was a first for him. “It’s a lifetime of work, in a way. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for 25 years and I’ve put a lot of effort into it.” The 62-year-old performed 20 minutes of the concert at the launch the Potato Shed’s 2017 season, and even had some spare carnations for a few lucky ladies. He will return later this year with the full
Holden's a classic. show, which includes snippets of his career - like his time with David Hasselhoff and the infamous Bobo the Clown incident. Award-winning playwright Hannie Rayson joined Holden for the season launch, previewing her one-woman show. Fellow playwright Sandra Long previewed
her new play Birdcage about the complexities of hoarding and guitarist and singer Wayne Jury performed a few songs. A nationally acclaimed blues artists, Jury’s music initiation began in Geelong supporting Australia’s finest touring bands like AC/DC, The Little River Band, Cold Chisel and Dragon.
Holden said the shed’s 2017 line-up was impressive, but stopped short of giving it his trademark “Touchdown!” “I’d have to see all the shows myself first,” Holden said wryly, “the touchdown is still a previous thing for me. It’s only something I give out if it’s earnt - or for charity.”

FINALLY FRIDAY
Voices soar high as the steeple Victoria’s heavenly voices will come to Geelong for the Windfire Choir and Musical Ensemble’s Christmas concert next Friday. Opera artists Lee Abrahmsen, Belinda Paterson, Michael Petruccelli and Nicholas Dinopoulos will join the choir singing the songs of the season. Geelong-based award-winning aria Abrahmsen will fill St Mary’s Basilica with the soaring sounds which have won her operatic glory. The 36-year-old has been a regular at the church’s concerts since moving back to her childhood home of Geelong five years ago. “It’s beautiful,” she told the Indy. “The acoustics are like a bathroom, really. They make everything sound wonderful.” Abrahmsen has won a number of Music and Opera Singing Trust awards and other singing accolades. She was a finalist in the Covent Garden National Studio Scholarship, the German Operatic Award and the Australian Youth Aria. Abrahmsen performs regularly with the Victorian Opera and Melbourne Opera, and has toured the UK, Western Europe, Japan and China. She sang a recital to a packed house at St Martin-in-the-Fields in London’s Trafalgar Square in 2013, winning standing ovation during her encore. “I was told it was rare for English audiences to stand up for artists, so that was pretty special,” she said. Melbourne-based mezzo Belinda Paterson has performed regularly with the Opera Australia Melbourne Chorus since 2000. She has performed with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl and toured with Opera Australia. Up-and-coming tenor Michael Petruccelli and bass-baritone Nicholas Dinopoulos have been establishing themselves on Melbourne’s operatic scene.
LOCAL DIVA: Lee Abrahmsen performs in Melbourne earlier this year The University of Melbourne graduates have played a number of roles for the Victorian Opera and have performed live on radio. Young New Zealand violinist Hilary Hayes will join the operatic quartet performing Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending. The Windfire Choir has been performing since 2013 and features talented singers and musicians from Geelong, the Bellarine, Surf Coast and Colac. The choir provides scholarships for aspiring
young singers. Its three current scholars, aged 16 to 20, will sing a carol in French during the concert. Abrahmsen teaches one of the scholars and was a member of the Ormond Choir as a teenager. “There’s not much available like that in Geelong,” she said. “I think every young singer should be in a choir or a chorus just to learn the basic skills.” For more information, visit musicatthebasilica.org.au.

SOULFUL: The Badloves in action Consi joined original guitarist and singer Michael Spiby and bass player Stephen O’Prey, along with the Badlove’s newest addition, keyboard player Adam Rigley. Next weekend will be his first gig in Geelong
with the Badloves, although he has played in the city with other bands. “It’s always been great there,” he said. “I haven’t actually played at Sphinx, though, so that should be interesting.”

The ‘Green Limousine’ will roll into Geelong next Saturday when veteran Aussie soul band the Badloves plays the Sphinx Hotel. The band’s line up had changed slightly since their 1993 hit single but they’ve still got the same soulful sound, said new drummer Jeff Consi. “They make beautifully crafted songs,” he told the Indy this week. “It’s a lot easier to play when you love the music.” Consi has played for 18 months with the Aria award winning Badloves who have been busy recording their first original album in a decade. “I’m quite excited about it,” he said. “I think the songs are fantastic and we can’t wait to put them out.” Consi hinted the band might even perform a new song or two at the Sphinx. “But don’t hold me to that,” he said. Consi first came to Australia in 1999 as the drummer for legendary guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, who was then married to the Baby Animals’ Australian lead singer Suze DeMarchi. The New Yorker fell in love with Australia in more ways than one, moving here permanently in 2002. “At the time I was married to an Australia woman,” he said. “There are so many beautiful things to see and places to go. I love the coffee and it’s a beautiful lifestyle - it took me a couple of years to slow down.” Consi has since had three Australian children and played in Brian Maddox’s band Absolutely 80z. He would go on to perform with original Badloves keyboard player Tony Featherstone, who introduced him to the band. “They were putting the band together and getting back on the road,” he said. “Tony thought I’d be a really good fit.”

Big menu has taste of Japan If the reviews on social media are anything to go by, Sakuratei Japanese Cuisine in Manifold Heights is a gem. The addition to Geelong West’s culinary culture has been reviewed as one of the best Japanese restaurants outside Japan. And that’s from well-travelled tourists as well as locals who have discovered the authentic delicacies served with a minimum of fuss. The real strength of Sakuratei is the extensive menu, with everything from soups and entrees, main courses of ramen, udon, bento boxes and curries to desserts. The teriyaki chicken and beef have proved popular, along with the dumplings and hot-plate meals. Owner Flora says although some meals are not necessarily on the menu, the kitchen is happy to entertain special orders. A range of specials is available at the sushi bar along with a takeaway service – and all at very affordable prices. Not only are the various dishes freshly cooked, they’re served by friendly and knowledgeable staff. After four years in busy Shannon Ave, Sakuratei has developed a loyal band of regular customers, Flora says. Sakuratei also has a customer car park for eatin patrons. The restaurant is open 10am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 5pm to 10pm Sundays. Sakuratei is at 161 Shannon Ave, Manifold Heights, phone 5222 6668.

Act early to avoid last-minute flap Geelong Indy’s Talkin’ Turkey competition has had entrants hanging by their phones in hope of a winning call. And it’s no wonder - getting Christmas meats sorted early can help take the stress out of festive prepping. But even if they’re not winners, they can still order a delicious turkey from Corio’s A Cut Above to beat the Christmas rush. The butcher supplies the turkeys for the competition that’s got readers in a flap each year and last year’s winners eagerly devoured their prize turkeys. The store has award-winning local ham, lamb and chicken to fill the Christmas table, and value packs to get families the best deals. A Cut Above is open seven days a week, giving shoppers plenty of time to get in early for their Christmas meats. And Routleys bakeries around Geelong have locals’ Christmas deserts covered with the always popular mince pies. Shoppers can pick Christmas puddings, rum balls, gingerbread trees, shortbread stars and more to deck the table in sweet festive glory. In a special deal this week Indy readers can buy nine Christmas cupcakes for just $10, see advertisement. The bakery is celebrating 12 Days of Christmas on Facebook with a new treat each day, like festive bar cakes and gingerbread Christmas trees. And, of course, Routleys bakes all the savoury pastry favourites such as pies, sausages rolls and pasties for those who are catering for a full-day family feast.
WINNERS ARE GRINNERS: Who wouldn’t be left smiling after the Indy’s turkey treat.

Car services, brake checks, fixing clutches – getting these jobs done quickly, efficiently and easily requires a solid handful of essentials. One is location, or being able to get to and from the mechanic shop readily. Another is quick access by the mechanic shop to spare parts, which can readily trim a day off the wait for a car’s return. A third consideration is quality work, the fourth is friendly extra care and the fifth is courtesy pick-up and drop-off. Geelong Brake and Clutch’s Denis and Lesley Williams have made meeting each of these points articles of faith at their South Geelong business. Their clients don’t have to fight city traffic to get to them. Expert advice and product knowledge for all makes and models of vehicles – including offroad and heavy duty vehicles – makes GBC an easy choice. Superior customer service and care is the icing on the cake. GBC offers: brake rotors and pads plus rotor machining; drum brake kits and machining; clutch replacement kits and flywheel machining; and an extensive range of suspension parts; driveshaft replacement kits; and a brake and clutch hose fabrication service, all covering most vehicle makes and models including commercial vehicles and 4WDs. “We have a large range of brake and clutch parts usually on hand, making us quicker, easier to access and we take extra care of our customers,” Lesley says. “We go the extra mile to make people realise that they are important to us. And safety is the key issue too, as we all use the road”. “We‘re also happy to do no-obligation quotes.” Geelong Brake and Clutch is at 8 Dowsett St, phone 5222 7411.
Brett Turley and his team understand that cars and their owners are individual with varying requirements. “We genuinely care about you and your vehicle,” Brett said. “We offer a comprehensive range of motor mechanic services in our bright Geelong workshop and pride ourselves on our personalised service. “We take the time and effort to get to know you, our customer, as well as your car. “We are renowned for our fussiness and attention to detail, and that’s exactly how we like it.” BJT Automotive is a dealership alternative offering a high level of service at a competitive price, using only quality parts and maintaining new car warranties. Services include log book servicing, fleet servicing, maintenance and management, mechanical repairs, 4WD and light commercial vehicle servicing and repairs, pre-purchase car inspections, roadworthy certificates, steering and suspension repairs and brake and clutch repairs. “To ensure BJT Automotive’s mechanical services in Geelong are cutting edge and up to date we are constantly refreshing and improving our mechanics’ skills and knowledge,” Brett adds. “If you are about to buy or sell a car, talk to us first. We are VicRoads roadworthy testers, able to issue roadworthy certificates and offer comprehensive pre-purchase car inspections.” BJT Automotive services Holden, Toyota, Ford, Mazda, Subaru, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Honda, Hyundai, Kia and Suzuki vehicles. BJT Automotive operates from 8am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday at 8 Maxwell Avenue, Belmont. For more information phone 5244 3337.

MAZDA has been enjoying steady growth over the past decade on the Australian new vehicle market overtaking both Holden and Ford on its way to currently sitting second in the overall sales hierarchy behind Toyota. The star performer throughout this period has been the Mazda3 small hatch and sedan which has been having a ding-gong battle with Toyota Corolla for top spot, initially in its category but in the past few years as Australia’s overall biggestseller. Now into its third generation, launched here in January 2014, the Mazda3 first went on sale in Australia in April 2004, replacing the popular Mazda 323. In a very clever marketing move this new simplified naming format ensures that the word ‘Mazda’ is effectively used in every reference to the car. Mazda3 was given a refresher in July 2016 including a mild facelift together with changes to the steering and suspension systems and additional safety equipment. The exterior changes include a re-designed grille and wing with slimmer headlights that are either halogen or LED headlamps depending on the model. LED foglamps are standard on all models above the entry level Neo. Inside, there are changes to the decorative areas of the trim while the side ‘wings’ on the touchscreen display panel are a larger and easier to read. There’s good interior space front and rear. Boot capacity is 408 litres. There are six Mazda3 variants, each available in either five-door hatchback or four-door sedan bodies. In ascending price order they are Neo, Maxx, Touring, SP25; SP25 GT and SP25 Astina. Prices start at $20,490 for a manual Neo and run through to $35,490 for a SP25 Astina automatic. There is no price differential between hatch and sedan. There are two engine options. Neo, Maxx and Touring grades are powered by a 2.0-litre petrol with 114 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque; the sportier SP25, SP25 GT and SP25 use a 2.5-litre petrol engine with 138kW and 250Nm. Lack of demand saw the previous 2.2-litre turbo-diesel dropped from the range in January 2014. All models offer the choice of six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Mazda3 has a long list of standard safety equipment. In addition to the usual multiple airbags, enhanced ABS braking and stability/ traction control all models have rear parking sensors; whiplash-minimising front seats; hill start assist; and IsoFix child seat anchor points. Also standard in all models are G-Vectoring Control (GVC) and Smart City Brake SupportForward (SCBS).
The G-Vectoring Control system improves chassis balance by sensing movements of the steering wheel and modifying the amount of torque to each of the front wheels and changing the amount of grip that’s required. Systems that uses sensors and/or cameras to either prevent or reduce the impact of forward collisions are becoming more common. Each car company uses a different name and Mazda has chosen Smart City Brake SupportForward (SCBS-F) for its camera-based system. Fortunately the generic name of automatic emergency braking is now gaining popularity. All Mazda3 variants above the base Neo also get a similar system that acts in the same way to reduce damage while reversing (SCBS-R), as well as a reversing camera. These models also get the very useful Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) that identifies approaching cars when reversing out of parking spots and Blind Spot Monitoring. The highest-spec models also add features such as Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR); Smart Brake Support (SBS); Lane-Keep Assist (LAS); Driver Attention Alert (DAA); adaptive headlights; and radar cruise control. Our Mazda3 test car was the manual midspec Maxx. Despite its sleek styling entry and exit doesn’t require too much bending and scraping. The front seats are firm but comfortable with good lateral support. Although most commuters will no doubt opt for the convenience of an automatic transmission we enjoyed the extra control of the car’s six-speed manual. It has a nice short shift pattern and the clutch is light enough for the numerous changes required around the urban jungle. The car cruised smoothly and comfortably on the motorway segment of our test. On the rural back roads we had great fun moving through the gears over some undulating and winding terrain. The steering is well-weighted and responsive. The extra stability from the new G-Vectoring Control system means that there’s less movement of the steering wheel needed to turn-in. Fuel consumption from the manual hatch is listed at 5.9 litres on the combined urban/highway cycle. We averaged in the low sevens during our week-long test. Mazda3 combines great looks both inside and out with capable performance, comfort and very good value for money. Add a large array of safety equipment and it’s no surprise that it has been selling its socks off for more than a decade.

SPORT Hogg joins the local bash LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake In a repeat of the previous weekend's Twenty20 double header, the Geelong Cricket Club claimed the points on Saturday before lowering their colours on Sunday. The Cats travelled to Windy Hill on Saturday, with all the excitement centred around the fact that Australian and Big Bash star Brad Hogg was joining the side in an effort to gain some match practice prior to the Big Bash starting in a few weeks. He had to wait to show his wares though, after Eamonn Vines won the toss and batted, with Liam Buchanan opening up and smashing a quick-fire 55, before Tyler Larkins (21) and Brenton McDonald (16) saw a competitive score of 7/151 posted. In reply, Essendon were never in the hunt, as the class of Jake Reed and Hogg shone through, the pair taking 2/20 and 2/21 respectively, a 37run win the final result. On Sunday, a big crowd turned up to Kardinia Park to see Hogg in action, this time against Carlton. This time though none of the bowlers were allowed to settle in, as the Blues cruised to 6/145 from their 20 overs.
Buchanan once again top scored at the top of the order with 38, but a lack of significant partnerships saw the Cats struggle to keep up with the run rate, eventually finishing on 9/119. With two weeks to go until the Christmas break, Premier Cricket returns to its longest form, with a two day game scheduled over both Saturdays. Geelong will travel to Camberwell and will be desperate to go into the summer break with a win under their belts. In the Geelong Cricket Association, the top of the table match of the round between Newtown & Chilwell and East Belmont is evenly poised after the first days play, although East Belmont may feel they are slightly ahead with 272 on the board on a wicket that looked at times to have quite a bit of variable bounce. Mark Hanley got a dose of the runs for the Lions, making a patient 97 before falling LBW just shy of his century. He received good support from Hayden McMahon who made 41, while Becker Nguyen, Dylan McMahon and Dean Riches all contributed scores in the twenties to help their side to a solid 272. For the Two Blues, Nick McGuane picked up 3/50, and Jackson Davis took 3/73, to be the pick of the bowlers.
This will be a great test to see where Newtown & Chilwell are really at, and the fact that Lions star bowler Dave Lineen isn’t playing due to the birth of his first child last week, means they won’t get a better chance to run down a big total and send a message that they are the real deal this season. In division two, Alexander Thomson held high hopes of mixing it with the pace setters of the competition Bell Park, but were brought back down to Earth rather quickly as the Dragons flexed their muscles to show why they are premiership favourites. Winning the toss and batting, the Vikings started brightly moving to 1/48 in the early stages of day one, Nathan Saunders making a steady 23 at the top of the order. But from there, things went downhill as Kell Craven took two top order wickets, while Mitch Trask returned figures of 3/28, as both the middle and lower order failed to have any impact in a disappointing score of 135. With 17 overs remaining to complete day one, Luke Turner opened up for the Dragons and showed positive intent from the start, moving to 41 not out in his side's total of 1/72 at stumps. The Vikings will need a miracle to win this, and as it stands, they may well end up spending the afternoon session battling to avoid an outright defeat.
Pacing Cup party time at Geelong A $30,000 feature race will highlight a Christmas party-like atmosphere at Geelong Harness Racing Club on Saturday night. The club had been “bombarded with bookings” for the Geelong Pacing Cup, said manager Paul Prout. Cup nominations included speedy Tee Cee Bee Macray and much-loved Messini, he said. Prout welcomed the attention as recognition of its hard work to secure this Saturday night on the trots calendar. “It’s been wellreceived, with more than 500 dining packages booked,” he said. “I can’t wait. I’ve organised and reorganised and now want to see it happen. “We’ve had great media support and the trots have become part of the city’s conversation.” Many of Saturday night’s patrons would be FROFFIES: Trots ambassador at their first live Billy Brownless. trots, Prout said. “I wanted to try and get people who have never been to the trots before and that part has worked because there are 410 people who have booked who will be here for the first time.” “So as well as showing good racing that our track naturally does, it also shows the sport to people who have never experienced it up close.” Prout said the club had also put together a schedule of off-track entertainment including 2012 The Voice contestant Anthony Dellamarta alongside various marquees, food trucks, Flying Brick Cider bars and children’s activities. The unofficial King of Geelong and Trots Country Cups Carnival ambassador would also attend. “Billy Brownless will be there to give away signed footys and will be available for photos and signatures.” The cup is part of the club’s Summer Trots Carnival, with further racing on 22 December and 5 January. Prout said a $500 bonus for any trainer with three winners on either night would “ensure great fields for the locals”.

Sharks biting ON THE BITE Chris Pitman The arrival of summer has turned local anglers’ attention to one of the region’s classic sport fish options, sharks. Patrick Eastman and a few mates tried offshore from Queenscliff on Saturday, with a blue shark eventually appearing in their burley trail. The blue gave an excellent account of itself, with the team managing to boat it in - a great effort for their first shark trip. Swan Bay’s channel produced Australian salmon to 2kg on soft plastics cast along the edges. Anglers fishing baits also caught salmon, along with whiting, flathead and pinkies. Tackleworld Geelong’s Michael Moore made an early start Sunday morning to boat a nice bag of pinkies and quality trevally in the Swan Bay channel before moving out to the entrance for a catch of squid. Clifton Springs continued receiving serious attention, including from Paul Foot in a kayak. Paul anchored over sand patches to fish weed bed edges for a catch of 13 whiting to 40cm on an Instinct rig and squid baits. The spoil grounds out from the Sands Caravan Park came alive with pike to almost 1m and dense schools of pinkies, all of which responded well to soft plastics. The Barwon River estuary’s banks and jetties produce whiting, silver trevally and mullet. The fishing from Barwon Heads Bridge to the end of Sheepwash Rd was excellent, especially toward the end of the run-in tide with lightly weighted rigs. Surf beaches provided anglers with plenty of action on salmon, with metal lures working well. Freshwater anglers had plenty of options, including large number of small redfin in the Barwon River. Small hard-body lures were a standout. Carp to 6kg continued giving anglers fishing corn kernels a run for their money. Peri Stravropoulos banked a 5kg specimen with corn kernels on a jig head. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir’s main rock wall produced rainbow trout to 1kg on lure or mudeyes suspended under floats. Lake Bullen Merri remained solid for Chinook salmon and rainbow trout. Trolling lures around the surface commotion worked best, with both species nudging 1.5kg. Ross Virst travelled up to some isolated water around New South Wales’ Batlow region for last weekend’s Murray cod opening. Ross landed a 90cm cod using Koas Cods, along with numerous other fish averaging 50cm to 60cm. Back in Victoria, the Ovens River gave up cod averaging 70cm. The Broken and Murray rivers also hosted plenty of action, with anglers successful on hard-body lures such as Old Mates. Next week should provide good fishing at Clifton Springs, while offshore anglers could try bottom bashing for flathead and snapper in 40m offshore Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. Freshwater fishos should try the Barwon River around Queen’s Park for redfin.
