Equal view of life By Jodie Symonds MOUNT Evelyn Primary School’s Grade 5 and 6 students are sending an important message about stigmatisation and people with disabilities. View every person as an equal. After the completion of the One Community project, students Zac and Mackenzie said it had taught them a lot about equality. “I didn’t know much about disabilities, but after this I learned that everybody needs to be treated the same,” MacKenzie said. “It’s been good to understand how different their lives are to ours and what they do everyday. “...and it made me realise how people treat others when they look or act different on the outside - but they really aren’t that different.” The school worked with Yarra Ranges Council and Melba Support Services, who care and support for those with disabilities, to help the fight against stigmatisation. One Community aims at teaching primary school-aged students that everybody is equal, and to help decrease the social stigmatisation some people associate with those who have disabilities. In a school assembly held at Mount Evelyn Primary School on Friday 9 December, organiser of the project, Sarina Bunnett from Melba Support Services, said
since she had injured her back and used a wheel chair, she was instantly treated differently when she was seen in public. “Since using it (the wheelchair) people treat me different I’m no different, I’m better,” Ms Bunnett said. “They would stare at me, make comments. I stopped dying my hair and now it’s a nice shade of grey ... so then I was looked at as the old lady in a wheelchair. “It does hurt me.” Throughout the project, students hand-painted reusable bags that were given to people with disabilities through Melba. In the assembly, the bags were given back to students to raise awareness. “We want the bags to be seen all over Mount Evelyn,” Ms Bunnett said. The project was aimed to be a fun and informative way to teach the students. Two representatives from each Grade 5/6 class received the bags for their class in the presentation. Last year, the One Community project together with Mount Evelyn Primary School students created a canvas artwork that is now on display at Melba Support Service’s Lilydale campus. Your helpers in a storm By Jodie Symonds A NEW storm recovery clean-up campaign has been launched by council following the devastating storms that ripped through the state and left thousands of homes without power in October. Between 5-18 December, volunteers will be on hand to support residents unable to relocate storm debris from their properties. The Storm Clean Up campaign aims to encourage residents to help one another to remove storm debris and utilise the debris pick-up service. It follows the storm that broke on Sunday 9 October where winds of up to 120km/h lashed the state and destroyed more than 36 homes. The storm caused widespread damage to houses and powerlines, leaving thousands of homes without power. The initiative, supported by SES, Victoria Police, CFA and council is not only focused on residents cleaning up their properties in storm debris, but also checking in with neighbours to ensure those that need support are connected with a helping hand. When cleaning up, the campaign asks community members to take care when using chainsaws or other equipment and to make sure the appropriate protective wear is worn. Property owners involved in the clean-up program are required to place debris in neat piles on the nature strip. This is a separate campaign to the annual bundled collection pick up and the campaign asks owners to limit materials only to stormrelated tree debris. Residents who are elderly, have a disability or consider themselves to have exceptional circumstances are urged to call the Storm Clean Up team on 9294 6363 between 9am-5pm. For more information on the State Government funded initiative, visit www.stormcleanup.com.au

THAT Christmas can be a stressful time is common knowledge. But what you might not know is there are many ways to gain relief. One of the more novel ways could be attending the Buddhist Centre in Upwey, which, over the Christmas period is offering free courses on mindfulness and meditation. Frank Carter from the centre said: “Mindfulness and meditation have become subjects of interest to many people due to our often busy and stressful lifestyles. Our course is offered at no charge to the public, and is scheduled during a period when people are most likely to have some free time to participate.”

Make it, bake it and help mums out too By Jodie Symonds A MAKE it bake it market in Montrose raised more than $1100 on Friday 9 December to help support disadvantaged mums. Women and their bubs from all over the Yarra Ranges got together to talk all things motherhood, and raise money for The Babes Project. The project aims to support women in the perinatal stage and help them overcome their crisis pregnancy. Organisers of the Make it Bake It market, Amy Sheridan and Emma Benninga said the market was a great success. “We had 16 stalls, and they were all local businesses by women in the Yarra Valley,” Ms Sheridan said.
“We really wanted the whole thing to be local, and for everyone to have a chat and really be a support network for these women. The event had a variety of guest speakers including new-mum Belinda Carusi, owner of the Belinda Carusi Fitness Hub. “We just want this to be a place where everybody can talk about what they’re going through - and it’s going to a great cause as well.” The 16 stalls included baby products, baked goods, jewellery, candles and more. A photographer took Christmas photos of the children and live music entertained the crowd of mums. For more information on The Babes Project, or to donate, visit www.thebabesproject.com.au

Big retail theft WITNESSES are being sought by police, after a retail premises in Lilydale was broken into last week, with more than $1200 in cash and products stolen. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Adrian Berardi said at 2am on Friday, 9 December, a front door to a business on Maroondah Highway in Lilydale, near Cyril Street, was smashed open. Thieves then made off with $250 in cash and $1000 in products from the business. Det Sgt Berardi said police were following up on CCTV footage, but asked anyone with information about the theft to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential crime report to www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Briefly
DETECTIVES are calling on residents to keep an eye out for thousands of dollars’ worth of stolen tools and machinery, after a burglary in Seville last week. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Adrian Berardi told the Mail that between 8.30pm on Wednesday, 7 December and 9.20am the next morning, thieves forced open a gate to a property in Ducks Lane in Seville. The thieves then entered a garage and stole a John Deere ride-on lawnmower, an air compressor, three chainsaws, a post-hole digger and other tools, valued at a total of $10,600. Det Sgt Berardi said the thieves would have needed a ute and trailer or a truck to transport all of the machinery. He said more machinery was stolen in a separate theft, at an industrial premises in Glasgow Road in Kilsyth between 4pm on 2 December and 7pm on 7 December. In that burglary, thieves entered through a gate and stole an excavator. Det Sgt Berardi said these thieves would have also needed a truck or a large trailer to make their escape, and urged anyone who may have information about either theft to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential crime report to www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Pitch perfect Rangers THE first gold sponsors of the new multimillion dollar Monbulk Rangers Soccer Club headquarters were thrilled to see the newly laid synthetic pitch this week, with the grounds on target for the start of the 2017 season. The club is offering gold, silver and bronze sponsorships to maximise the exposure of local businesses to the large crowds expected at the new centre, which will have two synthetic pitches and a state of the art club headquarters including a fully equipped canteen, change rooms and reception venue. Club president, Lisa Doolan, said more than 30,000 people a year from across the metropolitan area are expected to attend the new venue, with the Club’s 700 members making it one of the largest in the state. Gold sponsor, Richard Licciardi from MRE Property Marketing, said he was very impressed with the clubrooms and entire facility. “As parents, Michael and I are keen to sup-
port all community projects that encourage our kids to exercise and stay healthy,” he said. Neighbours Andrew and Kath Price of PLM Financial, whose head office is in Monbulk, and Anton and Anna Kirchmair of Yarra Ranges Estate winery in nearby Coulson Road, were quick to take up the offer of gold sponsorship. The Kirchmair’s son James played for Monbulk Rangers and they said they ‘had a lot to give back’ to the club, while the Price’s three sons are current junior players. Mr Price said the new ground was a ‘fantastic development’ and he paid tribute to the initiative of the Yarra Ranges Council in helping to fund it. Monbulk and District Community Bank Branch, also a gold sponsor, has been a long time supporter of the club and manager, Aimee Te Boekhorst said it had been amazing to watch the progress of the new grounds, which she said would be an ‘absolute asset’ to the community.

School is up there By Peter Douglas THE Lilydale Flying School said their recent announcement as winner of the Flying Training Organisation of the Year is recognition of decades of fine work. Awarded through the Australian Division of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and ‘Australian Flying’, the award recognises the school’s work playing a positive, active role in the careers of pilots who have come through the school. The school regularly holds navigation challenges and free seminars, making instructors available to students for extensive pre and postflight briefings. The award was announced on Sunday, 27 November, at the Lilydale Air Show, with many dignitaries present, including Yarra Ranges councillors Mike Clarke and Tony Stevenson, as well as Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe. Chief Executive Officer Roger Merridew said the award was a welcome reward. “The award is a prestigious testa-
ment to the hard work and continuous improvement philosophy of past and present management and staff over the past four decades,” he said. “We have an enviable safety record and are extremely proud of the achievements of our many graduate pilots.” The airport is family owned and has been for the past four decades. The school teaches both general aviation and recreational, and, in 2015 alone, issued over 100 certificates and licences. As well as pilot training, YV offers a wide range of commercial services including charter and adventure flights. The airport is also home to: SkyDive Australia, Jamco Helicopters, Vintage Airways and Yering District Archers. Lilydale Flying School conducts an annual event where pilots are presented with their ‘wings’ awards. This is normally held at the end of November and includes a flying displaying, conducted by many of the flying instructors and past students.

Wood for the trees By Peter Douglas LATROBE MP Jason Wood says he’s prepared to speak out against his Liberal Party’s decision to cut the Green Army program. Through recruiting unemployed people to conduct weed-eradication programs, the program has been enormously successful in the Dandenong Ranges since the Abbott Government introduced the initiative in 2013. Now the Green Army is set for the scrapheap after the Expenditure Review Committee decided to abolish the signature environmental policy, which will save the federal budget more than $350 million. However, Mr Wood has urged a rethink on the decision. “It’ll be very sad to see this go ... I’ll be sending out an SOS to see what we
can do to stop this from happening,” he said. “I’ll be speaking to Canberra on this matter; this is a great initiative that gives great support to our local Landcare groups. “But failing that, I’ll be looking to support biological controls, as well as employment pathway programs which can help fill the void.” Although not in agreement with the cut, Mr Wood said he could understand the need to keep the federal budget in check. “The budget is in a bad state of affairs and we do need to get debt under control,” he said. “This may be the time for the states to stand up and show their support.” Mr Wood assured the ‘Mail’ all presently funded Green Army programs in the Dandenong Ranges, many of which
were a 2016 election commitment, would be completed. In relation to the region, he said he would like to see further funds directed towards biological controls that concentrate on the eradication of ivy, sycamore and onion weeds. Initially, nationwide, the Green Army project aimed to engage about 15,000 unemployed people - aged between 17 and 24 - to work on local conservation projects. The success of the program in the Dandenong Ranges was on display in October late last year, where groups worked on environmental management programs along the Puffing Billy corridor. Of those who participated, one third of the volunteers moved on to employment, while others moved on to study.

Letters Tragedy averted
Futsal nationals
A NEAR-MISS occurred when on a recent wet afternoon my 24-year-old son and three passengers were waiting to turn right into Edward Road. He had three things going for him: enough distance to the car in front of him, a habit of checking the rear-vision mirror and a short reaction time. A car was sliding sideways out of control, coming down the Maroondah Highway hill straight towards my son’s car. By quickly driving onto the median strip, he avoided serious injury or worse as the car slid past, making his car and the one in front sway in its wake. After swerving out of control through the intersection, the driver managed to regain control and pull over. Hoons give young drivers a bad name. There are some good young drivers out there. I would like people to know this happened, because otherwise it would go unrecorded as most other near-misses do. Geoff Hatten, Mount Evelyn.
FIVE exceptionally talented young indoor soccer players, from the Monbulk All Stars, have been selected to play in the Futsal Oz National Tournament. The fiveday tournament will be played in Thomastown in early January, where they will take on Australia’s best young talent in the Under 10 age group. The group also play outdoor soccer together and have developed a close bond, also playing at Mount Evelyn’s Futsal centre on Friday nights. Co-coach Gary Bowering said it was a great opportunity for them to play against the best. Pictured from back left are Indie Bowering, Luke Baker and Rick Dallioglio. Bye-bye Turnbull SO ANOTHER political year has gone by and what has been achieved? Well, Malcolm - who we all thought to be ‘Mr Wonderful’ when he deposed Tony Abbott hasn’t come out of this year very well; calling an election that lasted eight weeks. I was losing the will to live by the end of it. And now we have a rag-tag senate on whom he has to rely to get his Bills through. He is still a prisoner of the right and, of course, he has Mr Abbott snapping at his heels. So I will make the prediction that I think he will be gone by Easter - lucky to have got this far! Val Butler, Cockatoo.
Drive safe AS THE festive season kicks off, and our social calendars begin to fill up, it’s timely to remind everyone to take extra care on the roads. Many of us will travel long distances in the coming weeks for Christmas get-togethers and we know the roads become increasingly busy during this time of year.
It’s critical that everyone plans their journeys, makes good decisions and looks out for each other on the roads to ensure we’re all present for our loved ones this Christmas. In the excitement of festivities, it can be difficult to keep track of how many alcoholic drinks we have consumed and we know consuming as little as one drink impairs your judgement. If you’re planning on drinking any alcohol, our advice is to plan a way home that doesn’t involve driving. Some of us will travel on unfamiliar roads

Yellingbo Conservation Area by sequestering and revegetating the riparian environment along parts of the Yarra River, Don River, Little Yarra River, Hoddles Creek and Britannia Creek. One has only to look at the mess resulting from Melbourne Water’s efforts to revegetate the banks of the Yarra in Warburton to realise that although a great deal of money may be spent on the initial planting, often with the assistance of enthusiastic volunteers, there is ‘no follow-up weeding’. As a result, the weeds eventually take over again. I venture to suggest that this type of environment - grossly infested with blackberries, tradescantia etc - is hardly one in which a helmeted honeyeater would thrive. If the government, with or without the help of volunteers, cannot maintain the Warburton riverbank, how could it maintain a very much larger area? At present, owners of the properties affected by the proposal have a vested interest in keeping the abutting riparian areas clean, accessible and free of weeds. I am certain that they would do a better job than the government. Once this land is unavailable to them, I believe it will suffer the same fate as the riverbanks in Warburton. If this misguided and costly plan goes ahead despite widespread concern, I suggest that the revegetation areas remain accessible to the adjacent landowners. Also, that more effort be put into getting their co-operation, taking into account not only the potential for greater weed infestation; but also the possibility of increased fire risk through the introduction of dense, flammable vegetation so close to houses. Janet Sowden, Wesburn.

Always helping others By Jesse Graham YARRA Ranges Council has paid tribute to its volunteers, awarding long-time workers in an event in Dixons Creek on Monday 5 December. The council held their event on International Volunteer Day, holding an event at Dixons Creek’s Immerse Winery to celebrate the contributions of its volunteers. About 120 volunteers attended the lunch, with 30 people receiving awards for milestone years of service. Wandin’s Finy Prudon received a 20 Year Award, for her work with Meals on Wheels. After starting at the Lilydale centre, Ms Prudon swapped to the Yarra Valley team when she moved into Wandin. “She is always ready to deliver with a smile on her face - rain, hail or shine,” her award citation read. Frank and Elly Dubbeld, meanwhile, received 10 Year Awards, for their work with Lilydale Meals on Wheels. The couple also spend their time volunteering with Benwarrin, a retreat for at-risk women and children in Yarra Junction, where Elly cooks meals and Frank does handyman work, and at the church-run soup kitchen, King’s Kitchen, on Thursday nights. Deputy mayor Len Cox said he was excited to celebrate the work of volunteers who give their time to their communities and to council.
“Volunteers don’t ask for thanks and give their time out of selfless service to the community,” Cr Cox said. “Thank you to all the volunteers for the countless hours you put in, your contribution to our community is vital.” For more information about volunteering in the Yarra Ranges, visit www. yarraranges.vic.gov.au
Sport grants time MONBULK MP James Merlino is encouraging applications from local clubs in the Monbulk electorate for the third round of the $4.6 million Sporting Club Grants Program. The initiative aims to make sport more accessible and inclusive, increase local participation, stimulate local economies, and build sustainable sport and recreation, and volunteer opportunities. The program provides grants of up to $1000 to clubs across Victoria to buy new team uniforms or equipment. Grants of up to $2000 are also available to expand the skills of coaches and officials, while clubs can receive up to $5000 for initiatives that strengthen their operations and sustainability. Mr Merlino encouraged clubs to make the most of this support. “Giving club administrators and volunteers opportunities to improve their skills will make sure clubs are sustainable,” he said. Applications for the next funding round opened on 7 December and will close on 15 February. For more information, or to apply online, visit www. sport.vic.gov.au.

DON’T MISS OUT...
As we head towards Christmas and are celebrating the festive season, don’t forget that some things are toxic or dangerous for our pets to eat. Vets treat many digestive problems over the summer and there are some foods we love, that definitely shouldn’t be shared with our dogs and cats. *Grapes, Raisins and Sultanas. (No Christmas cake or pudding for our dogs!) Ingestion can result in kidney failure. *Rich or fatty foods including pork crackling, ham, sausages and turkey/chicken skin. Pancreatitis and gastrointestinal upsets can result. *Nutmeg is one of the lesser known poisonous foods and cause neurological symptoms including seizures. Fatalities can occur. Please refer to our facebook page for an extensive list of Christmas foods to avoid giving to our furry family members. On behalf of the Dandenong Ranges Veterinary Centre, we wish everyone a happy and safe Christmas and great New Year.

Mr Ron King is proud of his achievement of being a successful retailer in both Lilydale and Croydon, which has progressed from humble beginnings to the well-established icon in the menswear trade. Over the years, the Ronald King stores have developed various avenues along with surfwear and ladies’ fashions at Croydon. It has been at least 15 years since Ron retired, but he regularly helps out with deliveries between Croydon and Lilydale. Andrew King, Ron’s son, is now in charge of running the business and is based in the Croydon store. Jacob King, Andrew’s son, manages the Lilydale store.
There are more than 115 years of menswear experience behind the passion of helping customers to choose what is ‘the right style’ for them. Ron is very pleased to be able to see the generations follow in his footsteps. This makes Father’s Day special. Asked, ‘What gives the longevity and success of a family business?’ Andrew says: “Strong family values, a loyal team and staff who share those values and honest dealings with our loyal customers. Also, offering value, style, quality and service at the right price”. The King family has seen many changes in retail habits, but has maintained a “steady as she goes” attitude, that their customers always know, ‘that

beentertained dining, arts, music and more… The Jets, from left: Mickl Sayers, Dave 'Gleeso' Gleeson, Scott Kingman, Jimi Hocking and Paul Woseen.
Screaming in for one show By Peter Douglas THE Screaming Jets are set to thrust local audiences into the musical stratosphere, with the renowned hard-rockers to touch down at York on
Lilydale on 10 February. Fresh from releasing their eighth studio album, ‘Chrome’, the band is hitting the road again with their third run of dates since the May 2016 release.
The latest offering has received a typically warm reception for the Jets, peaking at number 30 on the ARIA Mainstream Charts, an incredible effort considering the band first burst onto the music scene in the early 1990s. After 27 years of touring and making records, the band knows how to rock Aussie audiences and with tracks such as ‘Better’, ‘Helping Hand’, ‘Needle’ and ‘Come On’, mixing with new tracks such as ‘Automatic Cowboy’ and ‘Cash in your Ticket’, their live shows never disappoint. Front-man Dave Gleeson, now 48, told the ‘Mail’ their ongoing success was a result of their traditional rock values. “We’re still there to bring the fire to our stage shows,” he said. “We’ve got those eight or nine songs everyone wants to hear and we’ll hit them with that straight away. “We’ll then back off and I’ll talk with the crowd ... let a few things out ... then we’ll smash home the show. “As far as hard rock ‘n’ roll fans go, they want to see people on stage playing their instruments. “They want to see Jimi and Scott ripping out, and they want to see Paul stomping around the stage owning it, and Mickl banging away ... and me throwing myself to the floor.” Gleeson said the album has gained significant momentum, which he is proud to say is of not a result of social media. “I don’t do Facebook - if I want to say some-
thing, I just let loose and say it on the stage,” he said. “If I say it on the stage, then I don’t get upset about anything at home - except for losing a game of pool. “You look at someone like Selena Gomez with millions of Twitter followers ... a third of them are just there to spread hate.” Throughout the 1990s, the Screaming Jets became a household name after a string of successful songs and albums. The band also became widely known for their intense live shows. Though, the rock star lifestyle never seemed to claim the band, only pushing them further creatively, with ‘Chrome’ the perfect testament to the love of their craft. Today, the Screaming Jets are Dave Gleeson (vocals), Paul Woseen (bass), Scott Kingman (guitars), Jimi Hocking (guitars) and Mickl Sayers (drums). “Our present line-up is eight years in and we’re all about having fun,” Gleeson said. “We went to Byron Bay to record and had a blast. “We’re still in a great place and having as much fun as ever.” The Screaming Jets will perform at the York on Lilydale on Friday 10 February. The top 10 worst films of 2016 By Seth Lukas Hynes
12334514-KC50-16
PRESIDENT Trump and the death of Leonard Cohen formed a depressing conclusion to a pretty dismal year. On the movie front, I was fortunate to have missed many of the biggest reputed stinkers, but several of this year’s worst films were hotly-anticipated franchise tent-poles. Here are my picks for the top 10 worst films of 2016. 10. Batman: The Killing Joke. A mediocre animated comic book movie made terrible by stiff animation and a degrading prologue. 9. Hail, Caesar! The Coen Brothers’ most forgettable movie, Hail, Caesar! is gener-
ally amusing and has great '50s style, but is let down by a poorly-structured dud of a narrative. 8. The Huntsman: Winter’s War. Well-choreographed action and fun heroes can’t hold up a weak, silly plot. 7. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Ben Affleck is a great Batman and the action is incredible, but the overall film is convoluted and dreary. 6. Independence Day: Resurgence. Lacking any of the first film’s humour, well-handled pathos or tension, Resurgence is the worst possible sequel we could have gotten. 5. Inferno. This is nothing more than a hyperactive, contrived journey from set-piece to set-piece, culminating in a point-
less, nonsensical plot-twist. 4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. More competently written than the first, but that’s not saying much - it’s still just as obnoxious. 3. Allegiant. At this point in the series, the world’s logic no longer makes any sense and the villains have no time to register as threatening, not to mention how flat the protagonists are. 2. Gods of Egypt. This bizarre fantasy epic is filled with corny, one-note characters and has a terribly-explained plot and awful CGI. 1. Yoga Hosers. Witless, staggeringly inept rubbish from Kevin Smith, a once talented filmmaker.

Tigers snare a win By Steve Brown FTGDCA LAST season’s finalist, The Basin, has lost another close tussle this time against the new look UpweyTecoma outfit to complete Round 6 of the Norm Reeves Shield competition. In a great battle - both sides batted for 80 overs, both scored over 240 runs - but it was the Tigers victorious in the end by just three runs. On day two, the Bears were chasing a target of 243 and were well in the game until opener Chris Wilson was dismissed for 94 with the score on 197. Josh Lee gave good support with 42 but they ran out of time with three wickets left in the shed. The innings of Upwey’s Steve Gannell (65) the previous week proved to be the difference in the result. The consistent Ben Wood took 3/39 for the winners. The ball won over the bat at Knox Gardens where the home side was 47 runs in front of Mt Gate on the first day. The Falcons thought they were in with a hint of maximum points early in the day before things settled down with the Gators 9/148 at stumps. For Knox Gardens, Matt Young claimed 6/36 in the second innings whilst Adam Wild finished with match figures of 9/93. Monbulk was never in the hunt chasing 381 against ladder leaders Knoxfield and could only muster 167 in reply.
Jason Fraser was determined not to surrender his wicket with 68 not out while solid performances with the ball came from Trent Evans and Michael Casement, both taking 4/41 ending the game just after the tea break. In the local derby, Upper Ferntree Gully had a point to prove against neighbours Ferntree Gully winning by 31 runs. Gully’s Josh Henry was dismissed for 73 along-sides Harry Brown and Jayden Bradbury who got starts but it was Upper’s Sean Langenberg who had the last laugh with 3/45 after being promoted from the second X1. Eildon Park Panthers successfully defended 284 against Belgrave. Johnathan Levell’s 63 was not enough as the Magpies were toppled to the tune of 52 runs. Shane Cosstick’s 4/67 and Steve Pimm 3/39 did the damage with the ball, as Belgrave has lost a little momentum. Cody Morris is heading for 400 runs before Christmas and when he’s on fire the Panthers are hard to stop. Young guns fire on national stage By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS A FANTASTIC day of athletics in the Yarra Valley on Saturday to culminate a very busy week of athletics. After the success of the athletes at Australian All Schools, the club had two athletes competing at the Zatopek: 10 meeting held at Lakeside Stadium on Thursday evening. Georgia Laven showed her improving tactical nous to comfortably win the Jamieson Under 15s Girls 1500m. Sam Norton competed in the Hilliard Under 15 Boys 1500m, running a brave race finishing in 10th place. Great to see the club’s talented younger athletes competing on a national stage. Saturday morning was a belter at Morrison reserve where the club again recognised those athletes who recorded four or more PBs in the previous week. Well done to everyone who has recorded PBs this season. It was the penultimate round of the year, with many outstanding perfomances and lots of smiles. Next week, Friday night, will produce many more smiles. The senior athletes compet-
ed in Round 8 of the AV Shield at Nunawading. A busy day with teams from Blue zone competing, too, which saw lots of heats and full fields in jumps and throws events. Yarra Ranges athletes all performed well, none more so than the over-achieiving women’s 40-plus 4 x 100 relay team. Maybe we will see them on Friday night, too. The final round of AV Shield for the year is on Thursday night from 5pm. After that, no athletics until Saturday, 7 January. The little athletics year finishes on Friday night with a modified program and an expected visitor. Get there early to help set up so we can start on time. Good luck too all teams competing at the Victoian Little Athletics Relay Championships next weekend. Have fun, run hard. For information on how to join or trial, photos, results and updated news, visit the all new and improved website at yarrarangesathletics.org.au or check out the Facebook page. Run, jump, throw ... too easy!
Ross Martin up By Dennis Fuller WHEN the members and concerned locals were asking questions, and being worried about the course’s closure, members rolled up in numbers at Emerald Golf Club for one of the final few rounds before the curtains are drawn and the welcome mat pulled in from the front door. The game was South African Stableford where players in pairs play stableford and multiply their scores on each hole. Exceptional levels of team banter emanated from this format because if one of the pairs failed and the other starred, the failure exercised multiplying power. Simply put, 0 multiplied by anything tends to equal 0. Out of the blue thundered Ross Martin (13), whose golf of late has been on the shaded side of average. But, on the day, his four birdies and four bogeys and a heap of pars meant that he parred the course. With the numbers at the club, and maybe player quality restraints, this means this is an isolated shower. He paired with the excessively consistent Peter Glasscock (12) to record a winning score of 93 points. Next cab off the rank, and only one good shot behind, were Philip Crossley and John Keys when their 92 points were meritorious but only good enough for second place.
Big games here MONBULK BOWLS TUESDAY DIVISION 1 - Monbulk v Boronia at Boronia lost 53-78. Division 3 - Monbulk v Bayswater at Monbulk - won 76-35. Division 4 - Monbulk v Ferntree Gully at Monbulk - lost 55-66. SATURDAY Division 2 had a tough game away at Donvale. It was a close contest all day and on a very slow green Monbulk stuck to their task well. Two rinks and two rinks down they finally got up to win by nine shots. Great effort but an even bigger challenge this week playing away to Bayswater. This will be a huge game in the context of the season; a must win with games against firstplaced and second-placed teams coming up straight after the Christmas break. Division 4 had their first win for the year ‘well done’ guys, super effort. Against a higher fancied team from Warburton, but playing with plenty of enthusiasm, Monbulk finally got up 84-70 to keep hopes of avoiding relegation alive; well done everyone.

UPWEY-TECOMA BOWLS MIDWEEK and Division 6 enjoyed great wins while Division 1 suffered a huge loss away to Ringwood and Division 3 went down by 16 shots at home to Chirnside Park. Division 1 The team was looking to get on the winners’ list and went into the game fairly confident, but unfortunately weren’t consistent enough against a very strong Ringwood side which handled their green much better and ran away with a very convincing win. Ringwood (1) 111/18 d Upwey Tecoma (1) 46/0 Division 3 Only just went down to a side in the top four, but should get a lot of confidence knowing they can match it with anyone in the division and will look to bounce back next week. Upwey Tecoma (2) 64/2 def by Chirnside Park (1) 80/16 Division 6 Had a great away win and puts them in the mix for a mid to high table finish and with a home game next week will look to consolidate their division.
