HEALESVILLE teenager Tristan Tweedie has kicked his way down the line, for a solid shot at his ultimate dream job. The Category B rookie was signed by the Western Bulldogs on Monday night and says his introduction to the Footscray-based club this week could not have been more friendly and welcoming. Tristan, 18, started in the under-9s, playing most of his junior career with Coldstream and Lilydale football clubs in the EFL before moving up to play with Eastern Ranges. His inclusion in Hawthorn’s multicultural and Indigenous Next Generation Academy gave the Hawks signing rights in the recent AFL draft, but when they dropped the ball, the Bulldogs wasted no time in putting the 190cm goalkicker in the blue, red and white. Tristan caught the eye of scouts playing for two consecutive years for Eastern Ranges in the TAC Cup competition, and kicking six goals in round one of this year’s competition. A foot injury sidelined him after just two games this year, but he says he’s confident he’s on solid ground as he takes on the next challenge. “I feel like I’m at the back end of it now and looking to get past it in the next month or two,” he said before heading back to the club from Healesville, on Wednesday 7 December. On the move to a full-time commitment to the Bulldogs, Tristan said AFL football was something he had dreamed of since he was a junior, but had focused on since being picked up with Eastern Ranges. “It’s a bit surreal for that (elite football) to be your primary career, but it’s the best job in the world from my point of view, and getting paid to do what you love, it’s a great opportunity,” he said. He is staying with a Bulldogs player and says he will live with a host family postChristmas. It’s a big change for any 18-year-old, but he says he won’t be taking his eye of the ball in adopting a level-headed approach to the challenges ahead. “To be successful, I think you have to be really modest and take everything as it comes. “Take it day by day, week by week; think in the here and now and look to go from there.” He said his aim in his first year is to build a good foundation and build from there.

Scholar handpicked By Jesse Graham HEALESVILLE Primary School student Chloe Lorgelly received a helping hand with her transition to high school on Monday, 5 December, winning the school’s scholarship for one of its top students. Chloe, a Grade 6 student, received the Tricia O’Reilly Scholarship on Monday, in front of parents, teachers and the entire school in an assembly. The scholarship was created in memory of Tricia, herself a Grade 6 student who was killed on her way home from school in 2001. Chloe was presented with a plaque from principal Cameron Heath, with representatives from Healesville police, Healesville High School and the O’Reilly family watching on. Former recipients, Marc Jones and Jacinta Scragg, spoke to the students before the presentation about how receiving the scholarship had helped their schooling life, before Chloe was announced as winner. Mr Heath said the scholarship was awarded to a Healesville Primary School student who was going to Healesville High School, and who exhibited qualities like Tricia did when she was at the school. “The student exemplifies Tricia in that they are accomplished, interested in being involved in all aspects of school activity, well organised, conscientious in all things that they do and they are also the sort of person who is sporty, cheerful, fun, loving and respectful,” Mr Heath said. “This person has shown all of those things this year, and not only this year, but in the whole of her ... schooling life.” Thanking Tricia’s father, Peter O’Reilly, for attending the presentation, Mr Heath said that announcing the scholarship was a “sad occasion”.

Chloe told the Mail after the presentation that she was “excited” about getting the scholarship, which includes money to assist with school costs, a plaque and her name on shields at both schools. “I wasn’t expecting it at all, really,” she said.
Kieran managed to complete the backstroke in 1:40:91, smashing Patrick Connell’s record of 1:43:96, set in 2003. He swam the freestyle in 3:19:57, beating Ashley Frenken’s 1999 record of 3:23:36. Ms Wilson said Kieran’s results were “very exciting” for the club. “It’s really good to see they’re progressing through the ranks and breaking those long-term records,” she said. She said the club was seeking new members for 2017, and urged anyone interested in signing up to visit Facebook.com/healesvilleswimmingclub.

HEALESVILLE’S swimming club has a new record holder, after young swimmer, Kieran Marshall, smashed two long-held records earlier this month. On Friday, 2 December, the swimming club held its annual internal long-distance championship, which saw about 15 swimmers take each other on in friendly competition. Club member, Naomi Wilson, said that swimmer Kieran Marshall broke two of the club’s long-held records on the night, for the Boys' 10-year-old 100 metres backstroke and 200 metres freestyle.
Gits of Love Give a Spa Git Voucher this Christmas 36 Old Fernshaw Rd, Healesville
By Jesse Graham A HEALESVILLE woman who was placed into a medically-induced coma after her car plunged into a dam on 26 November has died in hospital. Dr Kerry Arrow, 36, was critically-injured when the car she was a passenger in left a dirt driveway on a Margaret Road property in Healesville and veered into a dam. The driver, Dr Arrow’s 32-year-old husband, was able to get out of the car and pull her to safety - she was then flown to hospital in a critical condition and placed in a medically-induced coma. Victoria Police announced that Dr Arrow died in hospital on Tuesday 6 December. Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives attended the scene of the crash to investigate, and a Victoria Police spokesperson said police would prepare a report for the Coroner, and continue their investigation.
She said that she had been looking forward to high school “for a long time”, and that she would be starting her orientation on Tuesday, 6 December. As for her plans after high school, Chloe said she was keeping her options open. “I’m not sure,” she said. “I have a couple things in mind - I want to be a teacher, but I also want to be an actor or something like that.” Teacher Marlene Williams told
students at the assembly to take note of their behaviour, with teachers looking for award-winning students for “a couple of years” before their graduation. “We look for a couple of years beforehand, and we’re looking, looking, looking, taking notes, discussing it as the years go on,” she said. The scholarship is funded by bitumen and transport company Gornroamin Pty Ltd, through the Yarra Valley’s Picone family.

A MONTH ago, I was pleased to host my annual Casey Apprentice/Trainee of the Year Awards, with over 100 guests at Chateau Yering in Coldstream. In 2009, I initiated these awards to recognise and reward excellence and achievement and to encourage careers in local trades and small business. Our panel of judges, made up of four prominent local business leaders - chaired by Phil Munday of Phil Munday’s Panel Works, Clive Larkman from Larkman Nurseries, Sue O’Brien from Chateau Yering and Nick Fraraccio of Steven’s Glass - had the very difficult task of deciding the finalists and, ultimately, the winners. I would like to thank them for their ongoing commitment to these awards. Congratulations to Mount Evelyn’s Kate Taylor of Shear Obsession hairdressing, who received the Young Apprentice/ Trainee of the Year Award, and Gemma Rowles of Humphris Nursery in Mooroolbark who won the Adult Apprentice/Trainee of the Year Award. Both Kate and Gemma were chosen for their leadership qualities, strong work ethic and dedication to their chosen career. I would also like to congratulate the runners-up in our Young and Adult categories: Georgia Siggs, a second-year patis-
serie chef apprentice at OTree in Lilydale; and Nathan Smith, a fourth-year electrical apprentice at Laser Electrical Mount Evelyn. Due to the high number of applicants this year, the panel also decided to present an Encouragement Award in both categories. Well done to Alexandra Woods, a firstyear trainee at AFL Yarra Ranges, and Caitlyn Jackson, who is in her final year at Beimond Nurseries for being awarded the Encouragement Award in the Young and Adult categories respectively. It was great to see the winners and finalists receive some well-deserved recognition, in front of their family, friends and employers, on the night. I firmly believe that we should always encourage and value hard work and dedication in our apprentices and trainees as they help form the backbone of our small business community and local economy, now and into the future. There are hundreds more apprentices and trainees gaining crucial work experience, across the Casey electorate, in a broad range of areas such as hospitality, horticulture, personal services, building and construction, automotive, manufacturing, and agriculture. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate this year’s winners, runnersup, finalists, and entrants once again. I would also like to thank their nominators and employers, because without them these awards would not be possible. I’d like to wish you all a merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.

Water works By Jesse Graham MELBOURNE Water crews will be working for the next nine months to complete a new pipeline, replacing a stretch of the 120-year-old Maroondah Aqueduct in Dixons Creek. Crews have been working since September on a project to replace a 5.7 kilometre stretch of the Maroondah Aqueduct, which transports water from Maroondah Reservoir in Healesville to Sugarloaf Reservoir. The works, which are taking place near Bleases Lane in Dixons Creek, are expected to run until August 2017, and are part of a 20-year plan to replace the entire 27km aqueduct, according to a Melbourne Water spokesperson. Responding to questions from the Mail, the spokesperson said the aqueduct was originally built in the 1890s and extended in the 1920s, and is made up of open channels, tunnels and siphons. “Inspections have revealed that the aqueduct is starting to show signs of deterioration and will need to be progressively replaced, the spokesperson said. “In the short term, the underground pipeline will replace the ageing aqueduct - over the next 20 years, all 27km of aqueduct will be replaced by buried pipeline. “This will improve water security, reduce operation and maintenance costs associated with managing the open aqueduct and enable greater transfer capacity within this system.

Young leaders to the rescue By Kath Gannaway BUDGETING is another strength demonstrated by Upper Yarra Secondary College students involved in the ROAR Youth Leadership Program. The group had $1000 to design and developed a mural with a strong environmental theme under the program delivered by Yarra Ranges Council which aims to build leadership in Year 10 students. They not only delivered a magnificent mural but came in under budget by $250 which, on Thursday 1 December, they handed over to the Upper Yarra

Pages from the past Healesville Guardian 12 December 1936 In Case You Didn’t Know A new school has been opened at Rowe and Anderson’s sawmill on Wilk’s Creek, Narbethong. Thirteen children are being taught there. The induction of the Rev R.D. Lloyd late of Emerald as Vicar of St. John’s Church of England was held last Friday. The ceremony was carried out in conformity with ancient tradition in the presence of a large and representative congregation. On Wednesday 14 December at 1.30pm the estate of the late John Thomas Clarke will offer for sale 106 head of cattle. The sale will be held on the property ‘Glenwood’ Long Gully Road Healesville. Cr Mowle advises that the council has set aside an amount of money for the construction of a new pipe and chain wire fence around the Queens Park Sports oval. The amount will only be sufficient to do a portion of the work. Now, local bodies together with help from generous and progressive citizens, the money they have donated has enabled him to do almost twice as much as he originally anticipated.
Upper Yarra Mail 15 December 1994 Democratically Elected Councillors Exit Upper Yarra HISTORY was made on Tuesday 13 December, when the Shire of Upper Yarra conducted its last meeting of elected councillors for the foreseeable future, ending over 100 years of democratically elected government in the shire. E.J. Buller was the first president of the shire from 1888 to 1891. It seems appropriate that at the last council meeting Cr Gordon Buller was one of the councillors who took their civic duties seriously until the end of Tuesday’s meeting. It seems certain that the new Shire of Yarra Ranges will be created on Thursday and that Christine Fyffe of Yarra Burn Winery will be appointed as one of the commissioners. - contributed by Ellena Biggs

THE Andrews Government proposes to increase the numbers of helmeted honeyeaters in the Yellingbo Conservation Area by sequestering and revegetating the riparian environment along parts of the Yarra River, Don River, Little Yarra River, Hoddles Creek and Britannia Creek. One has only to look at the mess resulting from Melbourne Water’s efforts to revegetate the banks of the Yarra in Warburton to realise that although a great deal of money may be spent on the initial planting, often with the assistance of enthusiastic volunteers, there is ‘no follow-up weeding’. I venture to suggest that this type of environment - grossly infested with blackberries, tradescantia etc - is hardly one in which a helmeted honeyeater would thrive. If the government, with or without the help of volunteers, cannot maintain the Warburton riverbank, how could it maintain a very much larger area? At present, owners of the properties affected by the proposal have a vested interest in keeping the abutting riparian areas clean, accessible and free of weeds. Janet Sowden, Wesburn.

Ambos urge horse care By Kath Gannaway AMBULANCE Victoria has warned horse-riders and those working around horses to take care after 13 people were hospitalised over the weekend of 3 and 4 December, in accidents involving horses. Three of the incidents occurred in the Yarra Valley on Sunday, one involving a women in her fifties and the others involving primary school-aged girls. The woman, from Seville, fell from her horse injuring her shoulder and back;
a girl from Yarra Junction also fell from her horse injuring her arm and a second girl from Coldstream was injured when a horse was spooked and reared resulting in back injuries. All three were taken to Maroondah Hospital in a stable condition. An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said Sunday was particularly busy with nine incidents including the most seriously injured, a South Gippsland girl who was hurt when a horse kicked over a gate which landed on her.
She was flown by air ambulance helicopter to the Royal Children’s Hospital with serious head injuries. Paramedics are urging people as the warmer weather and school holidays approach to take care around horses and ensure they have a helmet, safety equipment and a mobile phone. Anyone riding or working with horses in an unfamiliar area is advised to download the Emergency + app to get an exact location to make it easier for emergency services to reach injured people.

CHRISTMAS time is a time for giving, for catching up with loved ones and for taking time off to enjoy the holidays. But between last-minute shopping and financial pressures and organising the holidays with family and friends, it can be a stressful and overwhelming time for some. Eastern Health counsellors are asking residents to look out for their friends, family and neighbours who might be doing it tough over the holidays, to keep track of mental health and to reach out when things get tough. Healesville counsellor Alan Honeycombe said the counselling service at Yarra Valley Community Health generally has more referrals during the December holiday period. “November was pretty quiet, but as Christmas approaches, the referrals rack up a bit,” he said. “Like anything else, Christmas sort-of exacerbates existing problems; if things are going well, it exacerbates
the fun and the togetherness - if things are not going well, it brings out the stresses. “Then, there’s people who’ve broken up, and how do you deal with the kids in that situation? It exacerbates a lot of existing problems for some people.” Mr Honeycombe said that even though Christmas card giving may be slowing down, in favour of holiday emails and text messages, it’s important to check in with people, particularly those who may be having a hard time over the holidays. “We used to send a lot of Christmas cards, just to let people know that you’re still around and you’re still thinking about them - now it’s a lot of emails that go around and a lot of text messages, and that’s fine,” he said. “I think it’s really important - it’s a good opportunity to spread the love and catch up ... and find out, make sure people are in a good place.” If things are getting too tough or lonely over the holidays, Mr Honeycombe recommended people reach out
to help, whether that be to friends or to a professional. “I think, try to keep things in perspective,” he said. “Things tend to blow out, but it’s really a matter of dealing with one thing at a time - issues are usually not as big as they seem. “You need to try and think, ‘What’s the big thing here? What’s the main, overriding issue?’, and these other little things that are bubbling away underneath can often be dealt with, if you take it slowly.” Counselling through Yarra Valley Community Health is free, though Mr Honeycombe said residents should book in advance, as there can often be a wait of “a few weeks”. Eastern Health Mental Health Dual Diagnosis Service Manager Gavin Foster said residents should not turn to alcohol and drugs as a “coping mechanism” for loneliness. “This can make difficult times in our life worse. So, make sure you eat healthy, drink plenty of water and stay active to ensure you are both mentally

Christmas Day - anyone interested can call Reverend Jennie Gordon on 0416 152 051. To book a session through the counselling service, call 1300 342 255 and select option 7.

Here’s cheers to the festival By Jesse Graham A NEW food and wine festival will premiere in April next year at Coldstream’s Rochford Wines, after being launched by the government on 8 December. Tourism and Major Events Minister, John Eren, and Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes joined organisers to launch the Yarra Valley Wine and Food Festival at Victoria’s Parliament House, on Thursday 8 December. The festival, which will be held at Rochford on 1 and 2 April next year, will feature the valley’s food and wine and is expected to attract up to 6000 visitors. “There’s no place quite like the Yarra Valley for the fine food and wine so many of us enjoy,” Mr Eren said. “This is a great opportunity for the region to showcase its wonderful strengths.” The Wine and Food Festival will run from 11am-5pm on both days, with DeBortoli Wines, Hanrahan Vineyard, Balgownie Estate, Yering Farm Wines, Oakridge Wines, Punt Road Wines, Coombe Farm Wines, Helen and Joey Estate, Boat O’Craigo, Tokar Estate, Squitchy Lane, Bulong Estate, Sutherland Estate and Rochford Wines among the 50 wineries showcasing their produce. A Festival Common will be set up on the lawn at the winery, with “wine laneways” set up for visitors to try different drops, in places such as Pinot Noir Lane. Visitors will receive a commemorative wine glass on entry, and can purchase wine tasting cards for $20, good for 10 wine tastings. Locally-made beer and cider will also be served at the festival, and a Masterclass Program will be run through the weekend, running visitors through winemaking. Meanwhile, artists will take part in the Wine Barrel Art

Children will be catered for at the event, with cooking demonstrations, entertainment and face-painting on the Sunday. WINERY visitors will be able to enjoy live music as part of their dining experience, with a new space opening at Coldstream’s Rochford Wines. The Deck at Rochford Wines, a new outdoor space overhanging the winery’s lake, opened on Saturday, 3 December. The space features a bar to showcase the venue’s wines, accompanied with a dining menu and live entertainment in an outdoor setting.
The deck also has a coldsmoker installed and will serve Southern-style barbecue food, and the space can be hired out for private functions. Rochford owner, Helmut Konecsny said The Deck would allow visitors to enjoy the valley’s scenery while having a glass of wine. “It is a great new addition to the range of entertainment attractions for visitors to explore in the Yarra Valley,” he said. During the venue’s A Day on the Green concerts, the deck will be used as a VIP space for
platinum ticket holders, with a view adjacent to the stage. To celebrate the opening of The Deck, Rochford Wines and the Mail are giving away a dinner at Rochford wines for one reader and their three friends. The giveaway includes a meal, glass of wine and wine tasting for the attendees. To be in the running, email your name and contact details to win@mailnewsgroup.com. au. The lucky winner will be announced on Friday, 16 December.
The top 10 worst films of 2016
Movies at Healesville and Warburton The Memo, Healesville
By Jesse Graham
PRESIDENT Trump and the death of Leonard Cohen formed a depressing conclusion to a pretty dismal year. On the movie front, I was fortunate to have missed many of the biggest reputed stinkers, but several of this year’s worst films were hotly-anticipated franchise tent-poles. Here are my picks for the top 10 worst films of 2016. 10. Batman: The Killing Joke. A mediocre animated comic book movie made terrible by stiff animation and a degrading prologue. 9. Hail, Caesar! The Coen Brothers’ most forgettable movie, Hail, Caesar! is gener-
ally amusing and has great '50s style, but is let down by a poorly-structured dud of a narrative. 8. The Huntsman: Winter’s War. Well-choreographed action and fun heroes can’t hold up a weak, silly plot. 7. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Ben Affleck is a great Batman and the action is incredible, but the overall film is convoluted and dreary. 6. Independence Day: Resurgence. Lacking any of the first film’s humour, well-handled pathos or tension, Resurgence is the worst possible sequel we could have gotten. 5. Inferno. This is nothing more than a hyperactive, contrived journey from set-piece to set-piece, culminating in
a pointless, nonsensical plottwist. 4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. More competently written than the first, but that’s not saying much - it’s still just as obnoxious. 3. Allegiant. At this point in the series, the world’s logic no longer makes any sense and the villains have no time to register as threatening, not to mention how flat the protagonists are. 2. Gods of Egypt. This bizarre fantasy epic is filled with corny, one-note characters and has a terribly-explained plot and awful CGI. 1. Yoga Hosers. Witless, staggeringly inept rubbish from Kevin Smith, a once talented filmmaker.

Bowls business challenge By Kath Gannaway BOWLING’S not only good for your health, it’s can be good for business according to the winner of the spring season Healesville Bowling Club Corporate Challenge. Andy MacDonald of MacDonald Maintenance and teammates Raymond and Hilda Gurney took out the championship on Tuesday 29 November, with Stevenson Builders coming in second place followed by Healesville Hospital in third place in the 22-team competition. The club started the challenge to raise funds for their new synthetic green inviting local businesses to team up and get to know each other over a six-week evening competition. It has become an eagerly anticipated Wednesday get-together for many businesses. “As soon as you step on to the green people naturally ask you what you do and I’ve definitely got work from being part of it ... it’s brilliant,” Mr MacDonald said. “Just look around, everyone is loving it; it’s good for the club and it’s good for local businesses. Speaking on behalf of the bowling club’s Corporate Challenge team, Len Cosson agreed, it has been a win/win initiative.

He said the competition had proved a successful way to fund new greens and replacement greens in the future, but that it was also planting the seeds for future membership. “A lot of the players are im-

Warburton’s rising stars By Kath Gannaway WARBURTON JUNIOR GOLF WARBURTON’S junior golfers are proving a driving force for the club which started a junior program six years ago under member Des Ray. Taking the MyGolf program out to local schools proved successful in introducing kids to what is still far from a mainstream sport for young people. The program is endorsed by Golf Australia and the PGA of Australia as a 10-week introduction to the sport, and it’s reaping rewards in lifting the profile of the sport with new generations. According to coach Tony Bickley, who runs the MyGolf program, it wasn’t long before the social enjoyment developed into a keenness to get involved in competition. Mr Bickley said juniors were soon competing in primary school events and club competitions against adult players with handicaps evening out the playing field for the young beginners. Mr Bickley said he has been astounded at the talent and the quick progression some of the players have shown in establishing themselves as highly competitive golfers. Django Ward, who has since moved to Queensland, led the way winning a club competition, followed by Tom Jolly, 12, who won against the seniors after playing in just four competitions. Django was 11 when he finished in the top 20 best juniors in the Victorian School Boys Championships last year and Harrison Baxter, at the same age, came 11th out of more than 80 young golfers hitting off in the 2016 championships last week. Harrison, a student at St Brigid’s Primary School in Healesville, won two competitions in September, including the Farrier Plate, a highlyprized annual trophy competition.
Tom Jolly and Harrison Baxter are rising stars of Warburton Golf Club. 162797 Angus Smith who is in Year 7 at Upper Yarra Secondary College is an all-round sportsman fitting his golf in a busy schedule that includes playing cricket for Seville and football for Woori Yallock. He has also claimed a competition win in the senior competitions. Mr Bickley said the return of Tom Jolly after a winter break gave the club the numbers to hold a junior club championship for the first time in the club’s history with Tom, Angus and Harrison making the cut. All three then qualified for the Easthills Trophy competition with Tom taking the trophy with a nett score of 201, the first time a junior has won the competition. He also set a club precedent as a junior winning the C-Grade on Saturday, B-Grade on Sunday, achieving a record stableford score of 27 points on the Thursday and finishing off with a win in the B-Grade making four wins in a row against adult players.
New generation golfers with coach Tony Bickley, (from left) Gabrielle Keymer, Skye Spenceley, Lily Seppings, Monty Jeffermans-Goodluck, Harrison Baxter, Angus Smith, Tom Jolly and Seth Spenceley. 162797 Pictures: KATH GANNAWAY Harrison is also making his presence felt winning the first junior club championships with a gross score that would put him in fifth place in the C Grade men’s. Mr Bickley said it’s an exciting time for the club and for the young players, some of whom have their eyes set on a pro career.
The club is offering clinics three days a week with a school holiday program starting during the Christmas holidays and on Sunday afternoons. Visit mygolf.org.au and search the Warburton postcode - 3799 - for more information on the program being run at Warburton.

Sport
Point of no return By Chris Anderson YVCA THE halfway point of the 2016-17 season has been reached. In the Yarra Valley’s top grade, DJ Strachan Shield, there are two distinct battles being fought for two separate prizes. Warburton-Millgrove, Woori Yallock and Mount Evelyn seem destined to fight it out for home finals and bragging rights, as the trio of teams are only separated by percentage at the top of the ladder after trading wins against each other. The other battle is being fought for the final position in the top four. Yarra Junction own the position, courtesy of result going their way this round while the sat out with the bye. While Seville and Healesville could easily press claims for the spot with a consistent run of wins. Yarra Glen posted their first win of the season on Saturday, and they, too, can’t be discounted from finals action. Warburton-Millgrove were the big winners of the round, making the previously undefeated Mount Evelyn look meek on their way to a comprehensive victory. The Burras posted an impressive 255 on day one. But, on a high-scoring ground, and with an in-form batting lineup, Mount Evelyn would’ve backed their chances to chase the score. Unfortunately, that is where the optimism ended, as they were totally outclassed by a disciplined, and well organised, Warburton-Millgrove attack. The Rovers were up for the fight early, as the absorbed a tight opening spell from the Burras, and it looked as if they were going to fight this one out. Daniel Giblin (23) made a bright enough start to kick the scoring off, but the innings failed to deliver enough resistance. David Lever’s excellent bowling was rewarded with the wickets of Jon Williams and Gareth Fraser, and from there the home side failed to make an impact. Captain Kane Jones and Daniel Fraser fought on, but the normally free scoring duo couldn’t make an impact on the scoreboard - and the pressure of a sizable total became too much. Mick Walker’s entry into the bowling attack signalled the start of the end for the Rovers. Struggling for wickets this season, the Burras’ champ seized the opportunity granted to him by his teammates. After removing the dangerous Jones for 22, Walker cut a swathe through the middle and lower-order to hand his team a comprehensive 162-run victory. His control, accuracy and wellset fields made scoring nigh on impossible, testing the patience of his eventual victims who couldn’t muster enough resistance. His figures of 6/31 were exemplary, with David Lever his main accomplice taking the top three wickets in figures of 3/34. Daniel Fraser (23) tried his best to resist the trend, but his efforts were fruitless. Mount Evelyn now need to bounce back as the size, and nature, of the loss not only ended their winning streak, but would’ve also put a dent in their standing among those top three teams. They face Yarra Junction in a crucial one day match at home with plenty riding on it. Yarra Junction will be keen to improve their season, and a win would start to lock in their top four spot, while boost confidence that they can match it with the big boys. Warburton-Millgrove on the other hand host Healesville and will be keen to see off 2016 with a win,
enhancing their reputation as the inform team, and the ones to chase, at the main break of the season. Yarra Glen secured their first win of the season against Healesville, and would’ve celebrated long and hard after being rewarded for their efforts to this point in the season. In most games, they have showed enough talent with both bat and ball to match it with the rest of the competition, but their depth, and their ability to compete for the entire two days, have been questioned. Not so this game, as it was Yarra Glen who outlasted an inconsistent and disappointed Healesville outfit. Yarra Glen posted a tidy total of 213 on day one, but deep down they would’ve been disappointed that that wasn’t greater after their imposing start on the day. With this being said, a score beyond 200 is a score that needs some effort to chase down, so they would’ve entered day two with much enthusiasm. This was certainly the case with the visitors again exposing a faltering Bloods top order. Josh and Mark Clare quickly had the home team on the ropes, as for the third game in a row Healesville’s first four wickets fell cheaply, this time for a meagre 17. The big difference about this collapse was the fourth wicket was that of damaging, and in-form, captain Ash Hamer, who has proved to be the Bloods’ saviour when the previous collapses occurred. His wicket brought Mark Minney to the crease. Minney has been an excellent addition to the Bloods line-up, and his lower-order combination with Hamer has been vital in keeping Healesville alive this season. The rescue mission began with tidy partnerships with Scott Hamer, and Brenton Damrow, ensuring that the innings would extend beyond tea, and with wickets still in the shed, and opportunity to get within reach of the chase if good enough. Both Hamer and Damrow fell when set, and the match winning partnerships failed to materialise. Josh Clare’s reintroduction to the bowling signalled another change in fortunes, and when Fry fell cheaply, the score was on 7/96, and the winning post was in sight for a desperate Yarra Glen. Unperturbed, Minney continued on. He found some valuable support, initially from Harrison Keeling, then from the inform Dylan Moore. Moore will be asking for a move up the order, as his valuable contributions over recent games, along with those of Ash Hamer and Minney, have saved the red faces of his more accomplished teammates. As Minney’s innings approached match-winning status, and a much deserved century, Mark Clare was able to break the resistance removing Minney for a classy 82. Moore fought on, but the cause became too great, and eventually Yarra Glen wrapped up a memorable 29-run victory. Fittingly, Josh Clare finished the game with his fifth wicket. His match-winning haul of 5/32 was well supported by Mark Clare’s 3/25, and the work of the team’s spinners. Buoyed by their victory, Yarra Glen must find another gear as they face Woori Yallock, but this season has been about continual improvement, so they will be keen on another competitive showing. Healesville, on the other hand, keep gifting their challengers and opportunity to take their position in the top four. Last season they scored two
memorable late season victories against Warburton-Millgrove to secure a place in last season’s grand final, so they won’t fear the trip to Warburton. Another memorable victory could kick start their faltering season. After securing their first win of the season last round, Seville showed their improvements with a dogged, albeit losing, performance against reigning champions, Woori Yallock. After battling away for most of the first day compiling a decent total of 169, they returned on day two to make a fair fist of defending it. Most observers expected that Woori Yallock’s batting strength would have little trouble passing the total against the Blues, and that they did, but they had to break through some tough resistance from the home team. As they have done so often over the past two seasons, Tiger’s captain Ryan Smith and his opening partner, Mick Dwyer, ensured they would see off the new ball and eliminate any early jitters. But when Dwyer fell with the score on 27, the home team willed their way into the contest courtesy of an inspired spell of bowling from Ron Sandfort. Sandfort dismantled the Tigers top order to reduce the visitors to 4/54, as Seville found themselves up to their eyeballs in this contest. Smith stood firm at the top of the order, and he provided a valuable foil to the explosive talent that is Simon Young. For the second game in a row, Young’s carefree strokeplay put the pressure, and the onus, fair and squarely back on the opposition bowlers, and captain, to stem the flow of runs. In quick time, the game was snatched from the Blues as they struggled for answers. Young owned the stage, and there was little that Seville could do to upstaging him. Sometimes you just have to bide your time, and stick to your plans, and with the reintroduction of Ron Sandfort to the attack, the game changed again as Young (57) was dismissed just after posting consecutive half centuries. With Sandfort removing Hayden Smith, securing a five-wicket haul, the Blues gave themselves a chance of victory with the score on 6/131. Unfortunately for Seville, their total always looked a little light on, and Ryan Smith well compiled innings flourished as he sensed the Blues closing in, and his unbeaten 74 proved to be the difference between the two teams, as he assuredly led his team to a four wicket victory. Ron Sandfort’s 5/45 was a highlight for the Blues, as he challenged the Tigers to fight for their victory. Seville’s midseason break starts a week early courtesy of the bye, and they will be buoyed by their recent form and will eagerly await the restart of the season, as a few more wins in the back half of the season could ignite a dash towards the finals. Woori Yallock on the other hand have only slipped up once in their quest for a hat-trick of premierships, and a commanding performance against Yarra Glen will do nothing but enhance their path towards their target. A nail-biter HEALESVILLE BOWLS SATURDAY PENNANT HEALESVILLE’S Number 1 side travelled to play Boronia which were in fourth place overall and one place ahead of Healesville on the ladder. In a close game, with Healesville just a few shots in front all day, it all came down to a nailbiting finish and the last couple of bowls with Healesville prevailing by two shots. Healesville 1 14/68 d Boronia 2 4/66; T. Langdon 13/18 - C. Lowe 26/9 - T. Pye 19/13 - R. Young 10/26. The Number 2 side played at home and had a huge win with all four rinks winning handsomely; undoubtedly, the highlight of the side was the performance by 95-year-old skipper Alan Devlin, whose rink won by 31 shots, 35 shots to 4. Healesville 2 18/127 d Ringwood 6 0/39; L. Stewart 30/11 - C. McLaine 37/11 - A. Devlin 35/4 - J. Butler 25/13.

John Hall hitting some peak form WARBURTON GOLF WEDNESDAY THE daily winner, with 38 points was John Hall, who is clearly the ‘form-player’ in the club leading up to Christmas. John won on a countback from his good friend, Ken Barratt. The ball rundown got to 34. The NTPs were won by Mario De Vincentis (3rd), with Trisha Eldridge winning both the 10th and 12th. Well done, Trish. Twilight is counting down to the festive season, and the Dicksons are feeling ‘very’ festive! Malcolm beat his wife, Lynda, on a countback as both had 21 impressive points. Their usual playing partner, Ossie McClay, was runner-up with 20 points. The balls went to 18. NTP winners were Jarrod Rickard (guest) on both the 10th and the 12th, and to Dave Wappett (15th). SATURDAY Stableford: Continuing from where he left off on Wednesday, John Hall won A Grade with 37 points. But, all players were ‘overshadowed’ on the day by junior tyro, Harrison Baxter, who accumulated 43 points, continuing his great form from the Club Championships. He won B Grade, clearly. Ralph Logan was runner-up to Harrison, with 39 points. Balls extended to 34. The NTPs were taken out by Michael Hibbert (3rd), ‘Happy Gilmore’ (5th and 15th), Barry Maltman (9th) and to Jye Furness (12th). Following on from the Club Championships, the Match-play titles (the Dick Leith trophies) were won by Andrew Williams, who beat Paul Mason on the 18th for the Open title; B Grade went to Steuart Hawke, beating Ian Kempton 5 and 4; and to Sam Dennis who won 3/2 against the wily Kevin Kane. All winners will be presented with their trophies next week at the Presentation Day.

Motoring Early revhead Christmas By Kath Gannaway FANS of motor racing will have an early Christmas present when three legends of Australian motor racing attend the Wandin Custom Car and Bike Show on Wednesday, 21 December. Rotary Club of Wandin members are revved up at the prospect of having Dick Johnson, his son, Steven Johnson and John Bowe as special guests for the final show for the 2016-'17 season. Dick Johnson was successful at the top echelons of Australian Touring Car Championships for three decades as part of Bryan Byrt Racing and Dick Johnson Racing teams. He is part-owner of the V8Supercar team DJR Team Penski and was fivetime Australian Touring Car Champion and three-time winner of the Bathhurst 1000. Johnson was inducted into the V8 Supercars Hall of Fame in 2001. Bowe is a multiple Australian Champion having twice won the Australian Drivers’ Championship during the Formula Mondial era and the Australian Sports Car Championship before winning the Australian Touring Car Championship in 1995. He shared the Bathurst 1000 touring car endurance race podium twice in ’89 and ’94 as co-driver with Dick Johnson driving for the Ford team Dick Johnson Racing. Steven Johnson races with DJR
