Waurn Ponds:
Crimes rise as station closed By Luke Voogt Waurn Ponds crime has surged by 26 per cent in 12 months, according to data released by the state opposition yesterday (Thursday). Three months of reduced counter hours at Waurn Ponds Police Station had contributed to the rise, said South Barwon MP Andrew Katos. A resourcing shortfall was forcing the station to choose between counter services or conducting controls, he said. “It backs up what I’ve been saying about police numbers. Crime has risen because they haven’t got the adequate manpower to man this station.” Offences in the 3216 postcode rose to 3639 between October 2015 and September 2016, up from 2882 during the same time the previous year.
Convincing kids to eat healthy food is more than just lessons in nutrition for Ocean Grove mum Lana Purcell. Now a food coach with a growing business, Lana learnt the secrets of her craft when she took over a closed canteen at her children’s school. “We had to be clever and sneaky about it,” she tells Angie Hilton in Geelong Coast Kids magazine. “We knew we couldn’t go all out with green smoothies and chia pudding. “We had to make versions of what they were familiar with, using more-natural ingredients.” Read all about Lana’s family and coaching business in the latest edition of Geelong Coast Kids, available now to pick up free at hundreds of family and children’s venues around the region.
The station has trialled reducing counter hours in favour of more patrols. Police told the Indy last week that divisional command would decide in coming weeks whether to keep the arrangement indefinitely. But Waurn Ponds Senior Sergeant Angelo Ferrara said the latest crime rise was unrelated to the reduced hours. “The police station has always been and will remain a 24-hour police station,” he said. “We’re only talking about a reduction in hours for customer inquiries. By-in-large those inquiries are not urgent.” Sen Sgt Ferrara said the reduced counter times allowed 200 hours of two-person patrols during the three-month trial. Continued page 13

In Brief Motocross surrender City Hall has given up trying to find land for a new regional motocross track, according to council administrators. The administrators said they would ask councils alliance body G21 to work with the State Government on finding a site to replace Barrabool’s McAdam Park, which closed after a four-year fight with neighbouring residents.
$15,000 leaks A 1.7-million leak into Corio Bay has cost fertiliser manufacturer Incitec Pivot a $15,000 cine, according to the Environment Protection Authority. The company’s North Geelong plant leaked the treated wastewater and untreated stormwater after heavy rains overwhelmed its containment system between July and September, the authority said.
Building works HOME SWEET HOME: Michael McGlashan, centre, and daughter Kiani at their new house with Habitat for Humanity’s Philip Curtis. 163290 (Nathan Clark)
Goodwill builds home for dad who nearly lost it all By Luke Voogt Community goodwill has given single dad Michael McGlashan his own home for the first time since a 2010 work injury cost him almost everything. “This house is a blessing,” he said as picked up the keys on Wednesday. Mr McGlashan bought the house at 95 per cent market value with a no-interest loan from international charity Habitat for Humanity. “It’s a beautiful home,” he said. “It’s just a shame they can’t do this for everyone.” As part of the charity’s model he worked 500 hours of “sweat-equity” on the home, building frames and installing his kitchen. “It’s a really good model because it gets people involved,” he said. “You really feel worthwhile. I’m an ex-plumber
- that’s why I kind of knew what I was doing.” Six years ago Mr McGlashan was married, working full-time and paying off his mortgage. But an injury cost him his business, house and marriage. The 55-year-old went back into the rental market as he juggled part time jobs with raising 12-year-old daughter Kaini alone. “It’s one of the hardest jobs I’ve ever done - and I’ve dug sewers. “Being a single parent, it really opened my eyes to the hard work men and women out there do.” The new Herne Hill resident said securing his daughter’s future had become his life’s focus. “I’m grateful for every moment I have with her.” Mr McGlashan has worked and completed qualifications in disability services while using YouTube to learn everything from braiding hair to sewing for his daughter.
“I had to change careers,” he said. “My body is too damaged to go back to the tools.” Mr McGlashan said he would never have bought another home without Habitat for Humanity and local businesses and groups. “None of the banks would have looked at me. For the last six years I’ve paid rent but that means nothing to them. “It’s just about someone giving you the capability and trust to do it. Habitat for Humanity’s Philip Curtis said the charity’s model provided “hope for disadvantaged families and a pathway out of poverty.” “It is ‘a hand up, not a hand out’,” he said. The charity has built 56 houses for disadvantaged families in Victoria and hopes to build another 44 by 2020, with loan repayments capped at 25 per cent of household income.
Work has begun on a $50 million student accommodation building near Geelong’s waterfront university campus, the State Government has announced. The 11-storey, Ushaped building on Brougham St would be complete in time for the start of the 2018 academic year, the Government said.

Double Take Straight from the ‘Well, derr’ department comes the latest research from the boffins at Deakin University. ‘Study shows alcohol and drugs play significant role in domestic violence’, was the headline on its latest press release. The uni went on to proudly reveal that this stunning revelation required a “three-year research project” with over 5000 survey respondents and analysis of police data from across the country. Needless to say, the results would come as no surprise to anyone with the slightest familiarity of family violence, or any other kind for that matter. Maybe Deakin can turn up the challenge and ask its researchers to study links between violence and the dietary habits of seabirds or something.
consultants running the jury had “tight riding instructions from Labor’s ruling cabal” to kill Geelong’s public mayoral vote. Even as far back as 18 July South Barwon MP Andrew Katos told the Indy he was concerned the jury would be a front to deliver the Government’s preferred council model. Maybe our editorialist follows the declared philosophy of supermodel Elle Macpherson: “I never read anything I haven’t written myself.” Meanwhile, greater insight might be provided by a forthcoming interview with Geelong personality Darryn Lyons. And it looks like his surgically-enhanced sixpack might take the lead, according to a post on his Twitter account this week. “Hoping to interview you for a story I’m writing for @WeAreMel about abdominal etching,” enquired C Brian Smith on the ex-mayor’s account. “Happy to,” replied Lyons. At least he’ll know what he’s talking about, unlike some others.
Double Take was amused to read a “surprised” editorial last week reacting to the state opposition dissing Geelong’s Citizens’ Jury apparently for the first time. “But until today no-one has said outrightly that the process was a sham with a predetermined outcome ... fixed by the state Labor government,” the wide-eyed writer opined. Err, the same coalition MP called the “convoluted” jury process a “wank” in the Indy more than a week earlier. “There was no majority against a directly elected mayor. It was a manufactured majority from high-paid consultants,” said shadow local government minister David Davis (pictured). A couple of weeks earlier he told the Indy
And finally, a pat on the back of State Government and Wintringham Housing for their redevelopment of an historic site in Geelong’s Park St. The pair have joined forces to renovate and upgrade 10 historic units for homeless accommodation. Honouring philanthropist Alexander Miller’s original 1800s purpose for the units, they will again house “vulnerable older residents”. The units had fallen into disrepair but the Government and Wintringham, a registered housing agency for the elderly homeless, will spend millions bringing them back to life. Surely money well spent on a sadly oft-forgotten segment of our community.

HIDDEN: The turkey to find in five ads. BIG BIRD: Melissa and Jay Sieradzki with their turkey and daughters Mia, 2, and Zara. 163251 (Nathan Clark)
Winning family to gobble up turkey Hunting turkeys in the Indy is more than just a family affair for Geelong West’s Melissa Sieradzki. “My husband and I and our two-year-old get right into it - she really loves it,” Melissa explained. “We had friends living with us this time last year when Talkin’ Turkey was on and it was a big challenge for all of us. “We didn’t win a turkey last year but our friends were pumped to hear we won this week.” Melissa was one of five winners in week four of the Indy’s Talkin’ Turkey competition. They all found the five turkeys hidden in separate ads scattered through last week’s edition. The other winners were Emma Musella, Stuart
Evans, Les Hannah and Ann Hutton. Five turkeys are again hidden in the ads of this week’s paper as part of the Indy’s Five Weeks of Christmas promotion. To go into the draw to win one of the five weekly turkeys, entries must name the five businesses and include the entrant’s name and phone number. Entries, closing at 5pm on Monday, can be lodged by emailing indy@geelongindy.com.au, phoning the Talkin’ Turkey hotline on 5249 6721, or presenting in person at the office of the Indy, first floor, 74-78 Moorabool St, Geelong.
A “deceitful” union robocall campaign is targeting Geelong pensioners about their entitlements, according to a local federal MP. The ACTU age pension campaign was “designed to scare older Australians and their families”, said Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson. “Over the past 48 hours the ACTU has hit thousands of homes in Corangamite and across the country with unsolicited robocalls,” she said. “Corangamite pensioners deserve better than union-funded lies from people who don’t have the courage to put their names to these intrusive and alarming phone calls. “Older Australians need to be respected, not made to be fearful.” The robocalls were related to pending Turnbull Government changes to pensions, including tighter assets testing. “Very few” people would lose their pensions under the changes, Ms Henderson said. “The facts are that more than 90 per cent of pensioners will not be affected or will be better off as a result of these changes.” “Some 170,000 Australian pensioners with
modest assets will be better off… and from 1 January 2017 will receive an $30 extra per fortnight. “The family home will continue to be excluded from the pension assets test. There is absolutely no change to this policy.” Under the changes couple pensioners would still receive “some pension” if they had up to $816,000 in assets and owned their homes or if they had up to $1 million in assets but were not home-owners, Ms Henderson said. “Anyone who loses their pension all together, which is very few people, will continue to have access to a health care card.” The robocalls feature a voice identified as ‘Leanne’ saying: “I’m worried about my dad. “He’s just had a letter from the government saying Malcolm Turnbull will be cutting his pension. He’s a retiree on a fixed income and really needs the pension just to get by each week. “Him and mum worked hard their whole lives, so how can the government suddenly make changes now? “And just before Christmas?”
Shots near-miss for women and child Bullets tore through a Lovely Banks unit while two women and a nine-year-old girl were alseep inside early on Thursday morning. Police said the unknown culpit fired two shots through a loungeroom window about 12.15am. Emergency services arrived at the Haugh St home soon after. The 54 and 34-year-old women and the girl
were shaken but uninjured, police said. Geelong Crime Investigation Unit detectives were investigating whether the shooting was a case of mistaken identity. Police urged anyone with information to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to lodge a confidential report at crimestoppersvic. com.au.

Jurors ‘wanted public to choose mayor’ but delivered opposite
Lost vote best of only ‘two evils’ By Luke Voogt Giving Geelong’s mayoral vote back to councillors was a choice between “the lesser of two evils”, according to a Citizens’ Jury member. “We had to choose between two flawed systems,” said Lara grandmother Mary Budd after the 100-member jury narrowly recommended scrapping the public mayoral vote. “That was the biggest problem we had.” The 100-member jury has recommended scrapping Geelong’s public mayoral vote, with the State Government due to announce whether it will implement the verdict early next year. The opposition had warned since the jury was announced that the Labor government would use it to take away the public vote, which the coalition initiated in 2012. Ms Budd said government representatives allowed the jury only two options: keeping the existing direct-election system or returning the vote to councillors. “There was lots of support for a directly elected mayor but we didn’t have a lot of options.” Several jurors suggested new methods of publicly electing the mayor but the representatives ruled them out as “aspirational recommendations”, she said. “There were always at least two people that belonged to Local Government Victoria who said what we could and couldn’t do.” But fellow juror Sarah Gofton of Highton said the jury did have scope to introduce aspects of the Melbourne model, which allows mayoral candidates to stand on a ticket with a deputy for greater support on council. “All who supported the directly-elected mayor said there should be a directly-elected deputy,” Ms Gofton said. But the jury never had a chance to discuss the deputy because the recommendation for a coun-

cillor-chosen mayor made the deputy position redundant, she said, Ms Gofton also preferred a directly elected mayor but the jury wanted “councillors who were happy to be councillors first, rather than just the mayor”. Central Geelong’s Liam Rodgers also voted for a directly elected mayor but considered the final decision “well-constructed” despite axing the public vote. The jury initially voted in favour of the public
but had to reach an 80 per cent “super majority”, which required progression to a scaled voting system that produced the opposite outcome. Mr Rodgers dismissed the claims of former mayor Darryn Lyons and shadow local government minister David Davis that State Government “rigged” the outcome. “There was the option for them to come and observe the whole process. If they’re calling it a sham it’s interesting neither of them showed up or submitted written evidence.”
Balancing “big picture” issues and localised concerns was the rationale for slashing Geelong wards from 12 to four and councillors from 13 to 11, according to Citizens’ Jury members. “We wanted to abolish any fiefdoms that might be behind the underlying problems (but) make sure the diversity of the councillors was maintained,” explained Highton’s Sarah Gofton. The jury has recommended that Geelong Mary Budd should have three councillors representing south, north and Bellarine wards and two covering the central city area. The State Government instructions limited the jury to 12 councillors in the jury’s “practical recommendations”, down from 13 including the mayor under the previous council. Ms Gofton said the jury wanted 11 to prevent the mayor having to use casting votes. Lara’s Mary Budd said the jury should have had scope to introduce more councillors given Geelong had the lowest councillor-resident ratio in Victoria. “We need at least 15. Places like Armstrong Creek and Barwon Heads are growing at massive rates,” she said. The jury also considered bringing council meetings into the “21st Century” with live-stream broadcasts. The jury will discuss the idea along with other “aspirational recommendations” in January. Jurors decided to meet again after running out of time in their scheduled final meeting for the year last month.

‘Fast-track’ for slow-down in CBD City Hall will “fast-track” a slow-down in central Geelong after feedback “largely” backed a 40km/h limit, according to council administrators. The trio voted in favour of implementing the speed cut after trialling the 40km/h zone in collaboration with VicRoads and the Traffic Accident Commission. The new limit would apply between McKillop and Swanston Sts, Latrobe Tce and Geelong’s waterfront, City Hall said. Administrators chair Kathy Alexander wanted
the 40km/h zone rolled out early next year rather than waiting to include it in City Hall’s 2017/2018 budget. The roll-out would cost $25,000, Dr Alexander said. Submissions during the trial period “largely supported the reduced speed limit”, she said. “The City is committed to doing whatever we can to improve cycling, pedestrian and driver safety across the region and in our central business district.
“Reducing the speed limit in central Geelong will ensure our busy CBD streets are safer and more accessible for all road users.” City officers would continue monitoring and reporting on traffic movements in surrounding streets to determine any impact from the new zoning, Dr Alexander said. City Hall earlier this year cited 156 crashes with 52 “serious injuries” in central Geelong over the past five years as justification for the cut But Victoria’s peak motorists’ group has
Victoria's lesson in inclusivity from a thriving worker Victoria Marshall has become the new face of the Surf Coast Shire’s reThink disAbility campaign after “thriving” in her placement at Jan Juc preschool. The 19-year-old always wanted work with children and has loved teaching her pre-schoolers to paint and read. “It makes me smile,” she said. “I love my life." Ms Marshall, who has Down Syndrome, started the placement in term two with a mentor from Volunteering Geelong. She familiarised herself with the role and grew in confidence, earning a one-day placement by herself each week. Jan Juc Kindergarten teacher Sue Gout said Ms Marshall had taught the children and staff a valuable lesson in inclusivity. “It is so lovely to see the children approach Tori to ask for help, to show her something they have made or to ask about something she has made,” she said. “I think this placement shows that inclusion is possible in any workplace. With the right organisation, support and mindset, it shows that great outcomes can happen.” Torquay Ward Councillor Rose Hodge said Victoria’s experience demonstrated that “people of all abilities can achieve their goals”. “For Victoria to blossom in this role... is wonderful.”
slammed the 40km/h limit as ineffective in improving inner-city road safety. RACV’s Dave Jones told the Geelong Indy in August that the cut was a “blunt method” that would make “no difference” to accident rates. He doubted the rationale for the cut, calling on City Hall to release data showing how many accidents in central Geelong were related to speed. The administrators should instead redesign streets to influence driver behaviour and separate pedestrians and traffic, he said.

ALL SMILES: Victoria Marshall at Jan Juc Pre-school with pre-schoolers David and Koa.
Geelong police have charged a 17-year-old boy and a 24-year-old man from Newtown following a series of thefts at Marshall Station over the weekend. Crime Investigation Unit detectives charged the pair with multiple offences including theft of motor vehicle, theft from motor vehicle and criminal damage. The man will appear at Geelong Magistrates’ Court on 20 December while the boy will appear at Childrens’ Court at a later date. Police allege the pair broke into 22 cars at the Marshall, South Geelong and North Geelong Railway between 2.10 and 2.40am on Sunday morning. Officers discovered a number of cars with smashed windows at the station following triple-zero call at 3.10am Sunday morning. Subsequent patrols discovered two more cars with broken windows at South Geelong Station and one at North Geelong Station. Waurn Ponds Sergeant Peter Quick said police were investigating CCTV footage.

Jobs on the way A global tech company will create 50 jobs when it opens a new Asia Pacific headquarters in Geelong. UK-based Tribal Group has announced a $1.17 million investment in the facility, which also has State Government support. The UK-based company creates tools to assess students’ progress and systems for education providers. Tribal Group Asia Pacific managing director Nick Stanley said Geelong was “growing in presence” as an innovative city. “It’s got a great work-life balance,” he said. “People like living here and having families here. Because it’s emerging as a start-up destination we can get the skills we require. “The State Government has made it more appetising but it’s certainly not the only reason (for basing the headquarters) here.” The project would also secure a $25 million
development program to build a new cloud-hosted IT platform in the same precinct, said Geelong MP Christine Couzens. “This investment is another vote of confidence for our growing reputation as a regional tech hub.” The precinct will include Runway Geelong, a local accelerator program for start-ups. State Government is funding Runway Geelong to establish a startup hub with $1.25 million over four years through a $60 million startup initiative. Innovation Minister Philip Dalidakis said 14 projects across Geelong region generated $118.3m worth of investment and 200 full-time jobs in the past financial year. “The government is planning for growth so that Geelong can create new businesses and jobs that will help the region become an even more attractive destination for new residents and investment.”

DUX: Geelong College’s Mark Kovacev kicked goals on field and in the classroom this year.
When St Joseph’s College student David Motorniak first received an ATAR of 99.55 – almost a week early – his mum thought he was joking. “She didn’t want to tell my dad, because she thought it was a prank and she didn’t want to get his hopes up,” David told the Indy on Tuesday. David first saw his score last Thursday when he was holidaying in Port Douglas with his brother. “I was blown away,” he said. He was one of 2000 students around the state to get their results early due to a technical glitch. Happily for David, the official release of VCE results on Monday confirmed his ATAR – the third highest in Geelong. A science and maths enthusiast, he hopes to get into medicine at Monash University. “You’ve only really got one career,” he said. “You want to do something ... you’re passionate about where you can help people. Doctors help people in their lowest moments.” He urged his fellow school leavers not to despair if they didn’t get the ATAR they expected. “There are a lot of people feeling really lonely right now but there is always a way to get into the right course.” Unlike David, Geelong College dux Mark Kovacev had to wait until Monday for his results, along with the majority of Victorian students. The Manifold Heights student achieved an ATAR of 99.70, making his the highest score in the Geelong area (the Indy understands). “It’s a bit surreal,” he said, Mark admits part of his motivation was beating his older brother, who scored 98.8 seven years ago. “I did that and went a bit higher,” he said. Like David, Mark wants to study medicine at Monash. He said his grandparents, who are doctors, inspired him. Mark showed his prowess on the sporting field as well as the classroom, winning the college’s fairest-and-best for soccer.

Saleyards repair costs on the rise
ROLLOVER: Police at the scene of a crash on Saturday. (Skye McCormack)
Woman injured after car overturns By Luke Voogt A 44-year-old Clifton Springs woman has narrowly avoided death after rolling her car on the Portarlington Highway at Moolap. The woman was driving toward Geelong in a white Hyundai Excel when she drove onto the median strip near the Moolap Station Road intersection on Saturday afternoon. A dashcam video posted on social media shows the car slamming into a tree before rolling back onto the highway on its roof. The impact flung the car’s rear door open scattering debris over the road. Earlier witnesses spotted the woman driving erratically on Portarlington Highway at Leopold before the crash, Geelong Highway Patrol’s Senior Constable David Ramm said. Sen Const Ramm said a number of vehicles were driving behind the woman, including on an
off-duty policeman. They followed the woman when they noticed she was unable to stay in her lane, he said. Paramedics treated the woman, who lost consciousness for a short time after the accident. She regained consciousness soon after and was airlifted to The Alfred hospital with serious leg injuries. A hospital spokesperson said the woman was in a stable condition. “She was trapped in the car for 45 minutes before the CFA and SES cut her out,” Sen Const Ramm said. “Her injuries were never life-threatening but once they’re in the car for a certain period of time its protocol to call the helicopter in.” Sen Const Ramm could not say at this stage if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. He said police were investigating the incident and awaiting blood tests from the hospital.
A rising bill to fix Geelong’s historic saleyards could bring forward their demise, council administrators have warned. They voted this week to wait for “further vital information” before deciding the yards’ fate in mid-2017. The administrators last month announced a $400,000 quick-fix to reopen the saleyards in January. But on Wednesday they revealed that an independent report last week identified “a number of urgent repairs” to make the cattle pens safe for use. The cattle facilities “were” expected to cost $320,000 for materials alone on top of $150,000 in works already underway on sheep pens. “Occupational health and safety legislation has caught up with the saleyards,” said administrators chair Dr Kathy Alexander. “The independent OH&S report we received last week on the condition of the cattle pens made

CSA figures showed crime increased 15 per cent in Geelong between October 2015 and September 2016 compared to the same time last year. Police Minister Lisa Neville said local officers were making record arrests for high-volume crime. “A dedicated team of police continue to inves-

tigate recidivist offenders and target known crime hotspots,” she said. “Greater enforcement around high-volume crime and drug investigations is resulting in more arrests than ever.” But local coalition MP Simon Ramsay labelled Geelong’s latest crime rise “disgraceful”. “The judiciary system needs a wake-up call,” the Western Victoria MP said. “They’re simply not listening to the community’s demands for tougher sentencing, and we’ve had a gutful of repeat offenders walking free.” Crime decreased 2 per cent during the latest quarter, from July to September, compared with April to June.

it absolutely clear that this part of the facility is in much worse condition than we anticipated and will require significantly more work and expense to ensure it’s safe for use.” The administrators would await a regional agribusiness strategy to identify “the full costs of cattle pen refurbishments”, Dr Alexander said. City Hall would also establish a saleyards advisory committee to give the administrators guidance on “user issues”, she said. “We’re also committed to working with buyers, sellers, agents and transporter representatives to immediately develop an interim cattle sales arrangement, or support for small lot sales.” The previous council had slated the 150-yearold saleyards for a $5 million sell-off. But City Hall closed the yards earlier this year amid concerns that deteriorating overhead walkways could collapse. The administrators held public consultations after a City Hall report said repairs could cost $1 million.

Letters Model mayor on Melbourne A Citizen’s Jury report was tabled in state parliament last week with recommendations about the future council model for Geelong. The Government will respond early in 2017 but Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins has indicated she will adopt the Citizen’s Jury’s recommendation that a council-elected mayor would serve the greater Geelong community better than the current direct-election model. This conclusion was made through an underwhelming approval rating difference of just 5 per cent (Indy, 2 December), which was a sham of a process on which to decide Geelong’s future. There is little doubt that the Melbourne model is the preference of the Geelong community. The Citizen’s Jury initially voted 57 to 43 in favour of keeping the public mayoral vote, which reflected an online survey of 956 residents run in conjunction with the process and finding that 59 per cent wanted to keep the mayoral vote unchanged. However, the jury required an 80 per cent “super majority” to produce a verdict and the end result flipped around. City of Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle, Committee for Geelong, former Premier Denis Napthine and former mayors Darryn Lyons and Keith Fagg all indicated that Geelong would be better off under the Melbourne model. My view is that a democratic process of choosing a community-elected mayor would better serve the needs of greater Geelong. This view is widely held by Geelong ratepayers. The State Government should give due consideration to other comments and views from people outside its hand-picked Citizen’s Jury. Simon Ramsay MP Member for Western Victoria

They wanted to show there is more to Christmas than Santa, presents, holidays and rich meals. But on the 14th riverbank Christmas the gospels underwent a bit of a rewrite when a star-bearer approached from the north followed by what appeared to be three wise men. But when they arrived at the stable the three wise guys turned out to be shepherds dressed in bed sheets and tea towels. Instead of crooks they carried hoes – a Dutch hoe, a three-pronged hoe and a small rake – all of which would have been suitable for hooking wandering sheep, not to mention a variation of “Hoe, hoe, hoe!”. I’d like to urge readers to stop for a moment and ask: can I help someone who is struggling? I truly believe that we are a nation that stands by those in need. Take care on water I write to ask all readers involved in boating and watercraft activity to take great care this summer on our beautiful rivers, lakes, harbours, bays and beaches. The latest Royal Life Saving Society Australia report reveals some concerning statistics. New data reveals that only 8 per cent of 473 people who drowned in boating/watercraft activities over a 10-year-period were wearing lifejackets. Twenty-six per cent of the cases involved alcohol, with 59 per cent over the legal limit. People should be reminded to avoid alcohol when around water. Alcohol impairs judgement and the ability to swim to safety. It is critical that people wear a lifejacket and it is extraordinary how many people who drown weren’t wearing lifejackets. Our latest report also reveals that 31 per cent of the cases involved drugs. No one should ever take out a boat, canoe or kayak under the influence of drugs. Never go boating, kayaking, or canoeing alone, always check the conditions before heading out onto the water and learn how to save a life. The new study suggests that boating and watercraft drowning deaths are on the rise. We ask readers to take great care so they can have a happy and safe summer. BELL PARK FARM FRESH Fruit & Vegetables
Hughes Street is the six-shop-stop in Bell Park for shoppers’ every Christmas need this festive season. With 40 years in Geelong, Siketas Butcher is no stranger to the Christmas rush. The family-owned shop is stocked up with turkeys, which arrived fresh on Tuesday, and a range of Christmas hams. Owners Bruno Siketas, son Tony and brother Milenko, smoke and cure their delicious smallgoods onsite with prosciutto, pancetta and more to add a Mediterranean touch to festivities. The store is a meat-eater’s heaven with its massive variety and has multiple five-star ratings online for its friendly customer service. Next door, Weiser’s Bakery has all the Christmas treats including German Stollen, ginger bread Santas and Christmas tree cookies. The bakery cooks fresh bread daily and has piping hot pies, pasties and sausage rolls for a big family feast. Bell Park Farm Fresh, in the same block, has all the veggies to go with a Christmas roast or a refreshing salad and colourful flowers for loved ones. And, of course, the store has a large range of fresh fruit for a Christmas platter or pav. Hughes Street newcomer 1 Fish 2 Fish has everything a coastal Christmas celebration needs from prawns for cocktails to fresh mussels and crayfish. With 28 years in the business, store manager Sophocles Mantazaridis knows how to get the freshest seafood. Soph makes his way to Footscray fish markets each week for the best seafood straight from Bass Strait and Australia’s coast. “Everyone knows me in this industry,” he said. “It’s about being there bright and early to get the best fish.” For shoppers who still haven’t found all their festive needs, Newlanders IGA has everything else covered. From practical goods like wrapping paper to continental groceries and something a little fancy from the delicatessen, it’s got it all. And shoppers shouldn’t forget to pick up a slab of cold beer, Champagne or Christmas brandy from the liquor section while there. Once the festivities are done James Ip’s Bell Park Pharmacy has Tony Ferguson weight loss products to help shed the Christmas kilos. The friendly and professional team delivers modern health services with old-fashioned personal care. “Customers love coming in to chat to us about their health concerns and getting good advice,” said store owner James.

FINALLY FRIDAY
Basking in the blues – and talent By Luke Voogt The Bluestone Blues Festival will come of age this year and celebrate its 21st birthday with generations of local and national talent. Geelong blues veteran Sweet Felicia will again take the stage at the two-day festival with her new band, The Tradies. Sweet Felicia has always been in love with music. But it became her calling when her brother’s band mate invited her to play his bass. “Once I played it knew it was what I had to do.” For three decades Felicia has travelled the country with her “jump swing” blues while working as a systems analysts, shoe salesperson and everything in between. Her up-tempo music and smoky voice saw her win the Melbourne Blues Challenge in 2011 and represent Victoria in Memphis the next year where she made the semi-finals. “It was the first time in my life I had been out of Australia,” she said. But nothing tops playing with the late Blues legend B.B. King in Brisbane during the late ’90s. “He was such a gracious and kind man, and it was an honour to meet him,” she said. Felicia moved to Geelong seven years ago when she was working on the Bellarine Blues Train and “Melbourne just got a bit too expensive to live in”. When she’s not playing at Pistol Pete’s or a festival gig, she’s mentoring Geelong’s young blues artists. “I just want to help them navigate the industry,” she said. “It can be very tough out there, especially for women.” The festival is the biggest event of the year for the Sleepy Hollow Blues Club. It will kick off at 6pm on New Year’s Eve with Geelong-based bands Lounge Lizards and Buxom Blues. The Andy Layfield Sound will follow while
UPBEAT: Sweet Felicia will be on stage again for the Bluestone Blues Festival.
Melbourne blues trio HouseWreckers will see in the new year. “Recovery day” proceedings will get underway at 11am when Torquay-based blues quartet Righteous Desmond takes the stage. Australian blues star Chris Wilson will start at 12.30pm filling the air with his penetrating voice and harmonica. Another of the country’s prolific blues artists, Geoff Achison, will follow with his band the Souldiggers.
The Sammy Owen Blues Band will play the final set for the milestone festival. The Bluestone Blues Festival starts at Murgheboluc Reserve at 6pm on 31 December. For more information or tickets visit sleepyhollowblues.club. Don’t forget to pick up a copy of this season’s Geelong Coast Magazine to read Sweet Felicia’s remarkable story of music and triumph.
SOUL DIGGER: Geoff Achison joins a talented line-up at the Bluestone Blues Festival.

FINALLY FRIDAY
ECLECTIC: Some of the works on display in Drysdale next month.
Quirky styles well in the art mix An eclectic handful of artists will display their quirky, whimsical works at Drysdale’s Springvale Community Centre next month. Former interior designer Beryl Stott is one the Eclectics Art Show’s regulars and is back again this year. “It’s a chance to see and be seen,” she said. “Hundreds of people come in from the coffee shop next door.” The Portarlington resident will display a number of vibrant, colourful paintings and sculptures in the exhibition.
What’sat on
She has been painting her whole life but only took up sculpting six years ago. “I was absolutely hooked from day one,” she said. “Now I’ve retired I can concentrate on it fulltime.” For Beryl nothing compares to the joy of creating art from a lump of clay. “They sort of evolve and take on personalities of their own,” she said. “When I sculpt their eyes they sort of whisper their names to me.”
Last year Beryl studied her art in Skopelos, an island in the home of modern sculpture, Greece. Since then she has built a portfolio of works at her home studio. “Artists tend to be pretty solitary people,” she said. “All of a sudden you realise you’ve got a studio full of things to get out there.” This year’s theme for the exhibition, Coasting Along, celebrates the Bellarine’s beaches. “This allows us quite a bit of leeway,” Beryl said.
“I believe there is even a painting of someone on a magic carpet, which would indeed be coasting along.” The exhibition will include a range of different works – even those of a “botanical artist”. It runs from 31 December to 14 January. Entry is a gold coin donation and much of the artwork will be up for sale, too. “Drop in and say hi,” Beryl said. “But be careful, you just may find something you can’t live without – and won’t find anywhere else either.”

Curries for $5 will fly out the door at Tandoori Cuisine and Bar Indian Restaurant on Monday as it celebrates its first birthday in style. Store owner Sandeep ‘Sandy’ Kaushal said the bargain curry day will be a big thank you to his loyal customers. “People on Pako have been absolutely fantastic. They’ve supported us from day one.” Sandy, who has had one day off this year, is busily preparing for the big day. He threw a yearly $5 curry day at his previous restaurant in Ocean Grove and was amazed at its popularity. Local customers stockpiled their freezers with the delicious affordable curries. “We did 600 orders in four hours,” he said. “Not even one order had less than 10 curries,” he said. The restaurant orders the best quality meat from Melbourne and even the spices are homemade, Sandy said.
It’s all part of his dream to have “the best restaurant in Geelong”. “My head chef, Ayub Khokhar, has 20 years’ experience and has even worked overseas - he’s very popular and has a great reputation,” Sandy said. “He won the 2015 Geelong Father of the Year award, too.” During his first year on Pakington Street people flocked to the restaurant to savour Indian cuisine. “Everybody is coming here saying they have never tasted such good food,” Sandy said. “Drinks can be expensive at the bars on Pakington Street but our Coronas are just $6 and our best quality wines are $30 a bottle.” Tandoori Cuisine and Bar Indian Restaurant is open from noon to 10pm, seven days a week at 17 Pakington Street, Geelong West. SHELL ARGH: Kids road test the National Wool Museum’s Pirates exhibiton
’TIS THE SEASON: A Christmas themed artwork from the National Wool Museum’s festive market
Festive season at wool museum The National Wool Museum will transform into a festive wonderland of local art during its 12 Days of Christmas market starting today. The market will have silks, paintings, prints, jewellery and more for those looking for a unique present, with all sale proceeds going direct to local artists. The free market includes artist demonstrations and a space to create Christmas ornaments. Santa’s cousin Captain Santa-Beard will be in town until 22 December and will be calling for pre-schoolers to help him celebrate Christmas. With Santa otherwise occupied his cousin needs some help gathering, wrapping, decorating and delivering Christmas cheer. Mr Beard has plenty of Christmas fun planned with stories, puppets, songs and crafts for Geelong youngsters. He will also take children on a journey back in time though the museum’s Pirates exhibition. Kids can take command of a pirate ship, design their own flag and try out different weapons – from cutlasses to cannons. They will find their fate on the wheel of mis-
fortune, discover the best loot to steal and take a pirate selfie. Along the way they will discover why pirate women were just as wicked as the men and practise talking the patter of a pirate. Visitors will learn about the ships they sailed on, the punishments they suffered and the rules they lived by. The hands-on Australian National Maritime Museum exhibition is based on the bestselling Horrible Histories. It will bring author Terry Deary and illustrator Martin Brown’s unique approach to history to life with foul facts, lively illustrations and gruesome games. Horrible Histories has filled children’s heads with foul facts since 1993. It is the world’s bestselling children’s history series, with more than 60 titles. Horrible Histories is an award-winning TV show in its sixth season and appears on Australian television on ABC3. For more information visit nwm.vic.gov.au.

Touch Up Guys can visit customers at home or the workplace for on-the-spot service and repairs.
Customers rely on the fine-tuned expertise of German Automotive to ensure they are prepared for any lengthy trip. General manager Ben Buckle said German Automotive always tries to improve its service to customers. The German Automotive team has the latest equipment and specialises in European brands, specifically Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, Audi, Skoda and Porsche. “We’re set up to dealer standard for these brands and take great pride in meeting the needs of our customers who have come to rely on us over the years,” Ben said. “We’ve invested heavily in both training and state-of-the-art equipment and two of our staff recently returned from training overseas. “This allows us to work on current models with no effect on manufacturer’s warranty at all.” The team at German Automotive uses genuine parts sourced from European suppliers and seeks customer authorisation before proceeding with any major repairs. Road worthy inspections are available and customers can benefit from the use of courtesy vehicles and a drop off/pick up service around Geelong. The workshop is equipped with dealer-standard diagnostic equipment to quickly track down any vehicle problems. German Automotive is at 8 Autumn Street, Geelong West.

Fiat 500X is a compact SUV with loads of character.
This Fiat’s fit to fight on steroids By Alistair Kennedy ONLY the Italians could get away with a TV commercial that links a performance-enhancing ‘little blue pill’ with the transformer-like conversion of a small hatchback into a muscular SUV. That’s what Fiat has done in a brilliant ad that sees the pill eventually dropping into the fuel tank of a Fiat 500 hatchback and bulk it up into the 500X compact SUV with the closing line – “bigger, more powerful and ready for action”. Check it out on YouTube if you haven’t seen it. Great fun. The 500X was designed alongside the Jeep Renegade following the Italian company’s takeover of the American icon during the GFC which no doubt explains why the TV ad made its debut in the primest of primetime spots, the 2015 NFL Super Bowl match. I’ve always loved the clean, unfussy looks of the new Fiat 500 and they work even better in the 500X. It’s noticeably larger and heavier than the standard 500 on which it’s based. At 4248mm it’s almost 20 per cent longer and, in the optional AWD version, is around 50 per cent heavier. It also comes with rear doors unlike the traditional two-door format of the iconic Cinquecento, and it has a reasonable 350-litre boot. Despite the size difference there’s a clear family resemblance between the two cars both from the front and in various details around the body, as well as the popular pseudo metallic look inside. Younger buyers will be attracted by the various personalisation options including 12 exterior colours with nine different door mirror covers; 15 dress-up decals; five door-sill inserts and five alloy wheel designs. Inside there are fabric and leather options. There are even five different designs for the key fob! Fiat 500X comes in four model variants, two with front-wheel drive and two with AWD. Prices range from $26,000 for the entry level FWD drive Pop with a manual gearbox, through to $38,000 for the AWD automatic Cross Plus. The Pop has the option of six-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch automatic, Pop Star only gets the latter transmission. The two AWD models use a nine-speed automatic. All autos come with paddle shifters. All 500X models come with seven airbags; ABS brakes with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution; Isofix child seat anchoring; electronic stability control with hill start assist and elec-
tronic roll mitigation; tyre pressure monitoring system; and rear parking sensors. Pop Star adds all-speed traction control; blind spot monitoring; rear cross-path detection; and reversing camera. Lounge and Cross Plus both also get emergency automatic braking and lane departure warning. Alloy wheels step up a size through the grades from 16-inch in the Pop, to 17-inch in the Pop Start and 18-inch in the two AWD models. Likewise the higher spec models (Pop Star upwards) have a 6.5-inch touchscreen for the Fiat Uconnect system and satellite navigation. Pop doesn’t have SatNav and uses a five-inch screen. Bluetooth, including voice commands, is standard across the range together with USB and Auxiliary sockets. Lounge and Cross Plus get a higher quality BeatsAudio sound system with eight speakers. Our test car was the AWD Fiat 500X Lounge. Entry and exit is surprisingly easy with large, comfortable and supportive front seats. External vision is excellent. It’s sharp and easy to manoeuvre around the urban jungle especially with the choice of three driving modes (Auto, Sport, and Traction plus) accessed via what Fiat calls a Mood Selector. It cruised relatively smoothly on the motorway with only an occasional use of the paddle shifters on long hilly stretches. Ride comfort was very good with noise and vibration making it one of the quietest cars in the compact SUV class. Handling isn’t exactly Italian sporty, but the 500X is neutral in the way it feels until you’re well above the cornering speeds likely to be attempted by the average owner. Fuel consumption from the 500X Lounge is listed at 6.7 litres per 100 kilometres. We averaged just over eight L/100km. So is that very cheeky TV ad right – is the Fiat 500X indeed “bigger, more powerful and ready for action”? It’s certainly bigger than the standard 500 with space enough for a family of up to twoplus-three, and with almost twice the kilowatts and Newton Metres there’s a fair bit more grunt. By “ready for action” we must assume that they’re talking about off-road ability. We certainly wouldn’t recommend ventured too far off the bitumen but with the added safeguard of AWD we found the Lounge handled some mild gravel without any problems.

SPORT Walker rips through Cats LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club had a horror first day in their clash with Camberwell last weekend, and look like heading into the Christmas break after tomorrow's second day's play with their tail between their legs. Batting first, openers Josh McDonald and Eamonn Vines survived the first half hour without too much trouble, but emerging left arm paceman Will Walker then tore through the top-order with a fine display of swing bowling. Brad Hogg playing his final warm up game before the Big Bash start showed his class with 36 not out batting at number 8, but with no one to help him, the side was bundled out for 130 in just 46 overs. With 47 overs remaining on day one, the Cats actually started well with Hogg claiming two wickets, while Dylan Moroney took one, to have the hosts reeling at 3/36. But a 92-run partnership quickly shut out any hopes of a miraculous victory, with the Magpies cruising to 5/179 at stumps. With victory out of the question tomorrow, the young Geelong side will be looking to show some fight and at least go into the break in a positive frame of mind.
In the Geelong Cricket Association, a round of one day games is scheduled to finalise the first half of the season, and while a lot of interest will be on the games between those teams at the top of the table, equally the division one clash at Memorial Park where Leopold will host Bell Post Hill will hold just as much intrigue. With two teams to be relegated at the end of this season as the GCA continues their restructure, a win here would be like gold for those clubs on the precipice. Both sides have had just one win from their six games, and even then, for both it was over the newly promoted St Peters who have struggled to have any impact in the top flight. On paper, Bell Post Hill look to have the classier line-up, with the likes of Rhys Bourke, Jason Grozdanovski and Lachlan Handley enjoying decent seasons so far, while for Leopold, Tim Marshall and David Ford have shown glimpses of their best cricket. But for both teams, there are too many passengers, and if players on either side want to contest in division one next season, now is the time to step up and show their clubs what it means to them. BELL POST HILL v Leopold, Geelong city v NEWTOWN and CHILWELL, Murgheboluc v SOUTH BARWON, ST JOSEPHS v North Gee-
long, Lara v GROVEDALE, EAST BELMONT v St Peters In division two, there are some cracking games scheduled, with every one of them looking like it could go either way. Manifold Heights will be looking to bounce back against Highton at McDonald Reserve after lowering their colours to Newcomb and District last round. The Sharks sit just inside the top six and won’t want to lose two in a row after some patchy form of late. Coach Chris Bambury has been in reasonable nick, with both the bat and ball, despite battling a nasty hernia complaint, so he will be looking for others to help carry the load. He certainly wouldn’t complain about the efforts of Shaun Fankhauser, who has enjoyed a very productive start to the season with 257 runs thus far. But from there, the runs cupboard looks a bit bare, and he’ll be expecting the likes of Justin Tarr and Frank Mileto to show some improvement with the bat if they are to take the points against an inform Highton line-up. Thomson v BELL PARK, NEWCOMB and DISTRICT v Torquay, HIGHTON v Manifold Heights, MODEWARRE v Guild Saints, EELONG WEST v St Albans Breakwater, Alexander Thomson v MARSHALL
THE FUTURE: Ryan Abbott, centre at back, with fellow draftees Timm House, Tom Stewart, Brandin Parfitt, Esava Ratugolea and Quinton Narkle.
Whiting on the plentiful side ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Whiting was by far the most common local capture during last week’s spell of settled weather. St Leonards hosted exceptional numbers of whiting, with anglers fishing in 5m to 6m toward Swan Bay taking bag-limit captures on the run-in tide. The whiting were mostly an excellent size, averaging 38cm to 40cm. Pippie and tenderised squid worked well when used in conjunction with running sinker rigs. Squid were again in large numbers over the grass beds between St Leonards Yacht Club and the entrance to Swan Bay. Tackleworld Geelong’s Michael Moore again cast soft plastics in the bay’s channel for a catch of pinkie snapper. Clifton Springs went from strength to strength, with whiting, squid, flathead and snapper all captured. Whiting were commonly taken in 5m off Hermsley Road, while the squid held in a little closer. The spoil grounds through to Alcoa Pier produced pinnies to 2.5kg on bait and plastics. Anglers who walked the beach at Clifton Springs while casting soft plastics banked well-conditioned flathead to 50cm. Rigging with a jig head heavy enough to ensure long casts was key to success, along with wading out. Bellarine Light Game and Sportfishing Club hosted Rainbow College and Hopetoun colleges Year 7 and 8 students for a fishing clinic on the banks of the Sheepwash, in the Barwon River estuary. Fishcare representatives Mike Burgess and Phil Belfray provided some useful information before the kids fished the wellburleyed for catches including trevally to 500g and a King George whiting. Anglers drifting in 40m offshore from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads caught good numbers of flathead. This time of year, it’s worth keeping an eye out in the same area for schools of Australian salmon and kingfish feeding on the surface. Down the coast, Tony Hynds and Geoff Vandenbosch encountered some nice bream to 34cm while casting hard-body lures and green Atomic grubs in the Curdies River. Local surf beaches produced salmon to 2.5kg for anglers spinning on the rising tide. Bancoora was reliable, but the fish were bigger further west. Freshwater anglers enjoyed the public opening of Stoney Creek Reservoir to fishing. After a generous stocking of brown and rainbow trout, anglers caught both to 1.5kg or commonly just under 1kg. The distance advantage from casting spoon-style lures worked a treat at the reservoir. Tackleworld Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lugt and Peri Stavropoulos both spent some time casting from the rock wall where they banked both brown and rainbow trout. Lake Bullen Merri gave up Chinook salmon to 2kg, with lightly weighted baits suspended just above the bottom working the best.
The lesson is never, ever give up on draft dreams A late-season match against an AFL ruckman was enough to convince Geelong recruiters to draft Ryan Abbott, according to the Cats. They used their last pick on 200cm Abbot after his performance against Melbourne’s Jake Spencer in a VFL game at the back end of 2016. Twenty-five-year-old Abbott had spent most of the year playing for Grovedale Tigers where he won consecutive best-and-fairest awards after returning to footy from seven years in basketball. He considered his luck with the Cats as encouragement to other players outside the usual career paths to AFL.
“I can’t stress enough to boys who don’t get drafted out of the TAC Cup that your career is not done,” Abbott told the Cats’ website. “You have just got to go back to a lower level and play as well as you can and people will come knocking.” Abbott was among a series of AFL ruck draftees who followed non-traditional routes to their new clubs. Sydney’s Darcy Cameron was selected at pick 48 after missing out in the previous three drafts while Essendon’s Sam Draper was chosen first at the rookie draft despite playing his first Aussie
Rules in February. The selections demonstrated how AFL ruck hopefuls should never give up on their dreams of finding clubs, Abbott said. “I had some really good feedback from the coaches and some of the senior coaches as well were pretty impressed with how my game was coming along. “That’s when I thought I might be able to make something of this. “They were really happy with how I competed against another solid AFL-quality ruckman, just that bigger body.”
