Melba merger on MELBA Support Services and Ballarat-based Karden Disability Support Foundation are set to join forces, with a merger expected to become official before July next year. In an effort to strengthen long-term sustainability, the merger aims to help both not-for-profit organisations to expand their services and better meet the needs of individuals under the incoming National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). As part of the merger, some Karden Board members will join the Melba Board, while a dedicated Ballarat advisory committee will be established. Incumbent Melba Chief Executive Officer, Glenn Foard, will head the merged organisation, with counterpart CEO Rachael Jones to take on a role as senior manager. Mr Foard assured the community all present services and staff would be retained. “We’ve always admired Karden because we share many of the same values,” Mr Foard said. “We’re taking the best of what we both have to offer, this is about sitting down and working out the best way to offer these services. “This will be a great advantage to us as the NDIS comes into effect, early in the year in Ballarat, then later in the Yarra Ranges.” Mr Foard says he expects the NDIS will result in a more competitive environment, where more choice for services will become available. He believes the merger will leave both organisations better placed to transition to the environment the NDIS is expected to bring. Melba Support Services provides services throughout eastern and southern Melbourne, while Karden provides services throughout the Central Highlands region. Melba Chair Dr John Annison said the merger would allow the organisations to better the needs of individuals under NDIS. “The care and well-being of the individuals supported by both organisations are our priority,” he said. “It has been critical to ensure there

won’t be any change to the services they receive; nor the high-quality service we provide.” Meanwhile, Box Hill Institute will be widening its course and offering and buying specialist equipment for classes after receiving more than $10 million from the Victorian Government. Training and Skills Minister Gayle Tierney visited BHI’s Lilydale Lakeside campus on Tuesday 13 December with Education Minister James Merlino and BHI CEO Norman Gray AM for a tour of the campus. After visiting several classrooms, Ms Tierney announced $750,000 for the education provider under its Specialised Teaching Equipment Initiative.
Ms Tierney then announced a further $9.3 million in funding to prepare the campus for the beginning of its Skills First program, beginning next year. “What happens next is Skills First and the intent of that is to create a new training system that puts governmentfunded TAFE at the centre of it,” she said. “It’s not down there, through the floor, which is the policy of the previous government, it is making sure that we have a sustainable and systemic TAFE system in this state, and that people identify with TAFE, but they identify with their local TAFE.” Yarra Ranges Council CEO Glenn Patterson and councillors Jim Child

and Tony Stevenson were present for the announcement, along with BHI chairman Jack Diamond, staff and a student. Ms Tierney said the $750,000 would purchase equipment needed for courses that were “directly connected to industry and jobs”. “I know that is desperately needed here and will be put to enormous use,” she said. BHI will purchase a full-motion flight simulator, which will allow for more enrolments in flight courses. The $9.3 million, meanwhile, was dubbed ‘TAFE Boost Funding’ ahead of the Skills First program beginning, which Ms Tierney said would help to

Farewell Mel a familiar voice FAMILY, friends and community members said goodbye to Melvyn (Mel) Gowing on Wednesday, 14 December, at the Lilydale Memorial Park. The Yarra Valley FM radio stalwart and long-time Upper Yarra SES member passed away on Thursday, 8 December, 2016. Mel enjoyed a rich, fulfilling life within the community he loved, after the adventurous soul moved to Australia in his youth. On 23 June 1937, Mel was born in Middlesex in the UK, but he was keen to have the Australian sun on his back. So he boarded a ship to Australia, then leaving behind his mother, Gwen, and sister, Jean. He loved the adventure and soon settled with an Australian wife of 18 years, Gloria, and they had three very individual daughters. Mel’s career mostly included his work as an insurance claims officer in South Melbourne and in Doncaster. He established some of his longest friendships through his involvement with the Parra Park Cooperative Game Reserve in Gippsland, where he contributed more than 40 years to the game reserve. On 28 January, 1991, Mel, among others, took the Oath of Allegiance in the naturalisation ceremony in the Healesville Sanctuary. Being community minded, Mel went on to give 10 years to the SES in the Valley, including bringing better telecommunications to the region. Keeping it local, he succeeded in lobbying for the much-needed After Hours clinic, which was approved by then federal health minister, Tony Abbott. Mel has also been one of the voices of the Yarra Valley for YVFM and be-

The much-loved family man and community-minded radio veteran. 163337 came a life member, after training up his share of students. Mel enjoyed interviewing the likes of Denise Drysdale and Becky Cole. He was very much involved in politics, too, and interviewed his share of politicians such as Fran Bailey, Bronwyn Bishop and Mr Abbott. Mel enjoyed many years of Australian Outback trips with his long-time mates, where annually they would hire a small plane and travel to remote Australian sites like the Kimberly’s, Arn-

hem Land and Thursday Island. He loved the King Island produce with his ‘Gamy meats’ such as kangaroo, wild duck and Barramundi. Mel always appreciated the finest wines and dining, which he and his sweetheart wife, Val, along with friends, regularly enjoying the beautiful wineries and restaurants in the Valley. Every Sunday, he would tune into Macca’s Australia All Over and reminisce while the calls came in from near and far.
Daughter Julie paid tribute to Dad, praising his sense of humour. “Mel has been the fairest most honest role model I know, and always made sure we had a good belly laugh before ending any conversation,” she said. “We all know what a fine example his presence has made to the family and community. “To me, his daughter, he was and always will be the benchmark for integrity.”

CONGRATULATIONS to everyone involved in the community-led storm clean-up campaign this month. It was wonderful to see the community spirit as residents and community groups banded together to assist those in our community who were affected by the October storm. Residents were able to access a free pick up service up until Sunday 18 December, thanks to funding from the State Government. This community initiative was supported by Yarra Ranges Council, Knox City Council, Cardinia Council, SES, CFA, Victoria Police and the State Government. Thank you to our volunteers from Millgrove Residents Actions Group, the Lilydale Branch - Rotary Service Club and Volunteering Victoria HELPout. The clean up would not have been possible without the input
of people living in the Yarra Ranges who were keen to offer a helping hand to their neighbours including the elderly, those living with a disability or people who were unable to remove the tree debris on their property. While the campaign has come to an end, we are anticipating that the CFA will declare the Fire Danger Period shortly. During this period, open air burning cannot go ahead without a permit. It’s important that residents use the coming weeks to burn off before the CFA’s announcement. Please be aware that open air burning restrictions may vary based on your property zoning. Please visit the My Neighbourhood section on the Yarra Ranges Council website - yarraranges.vic.gov.au/myneighbourhood, which allows you to enter your home address to access information about burning off, including what restrictions may apply and times when burning can occur. For residents with green waste, please visit My Neighbourhood to check your upcoming regular fortnightly collection dates. For those of you that aren’t
aware, the old Fire Ready App has been upgraded to the all hazards VicEmergency app. Make sure you receive up to date incident information by downloading the VicEmergency app to your smart phone to access timely emergency information and warnings. To download the app, visit emergency.vic.gov.au To find out more about fire restrictions, visit the CFA’s website at cfa.vic.gov.au. Summer is a beautiful time of year in the Yarra Ranges but with the sunshine comes high temperatures. Please check on your neighbours over the Christmas period and coming summer months. Drink plenty of water even if you don’t feel thirsty. Please provide your pets and farm animals with plenty of water. Stay in the shade, in airconditioned buildings and keep out of the sun for long periods of time. There is also plenty to do during the school holiday period. There are various activities taking place throughout January around the Yarra Ranges. To find out what is on, please visit yarraranges.vic.gov.au/youth or follow YarraRangesYouth on Facebook.

Mr Fuller hoped the site would be maintained in some form moving forward, but had no idea what Mr Wee has planned for the future. He also feared for the security at the site, with the club enduring issues with motorbikes illegally accessing the area and doing “circle work” on the greens. Meanwhile, long-time member and nearby resident, Dennis Fuller, said the course would be sorely missed. “We’re just a group of blokes who like to come here, get together and have a hit,” he said. But Mr Fuller acknowledged there was a deeply historic aspect to playing the course and being around the impressive old clubroom, too. Not to forget a heritage-listed Japanese japonica tree on the site, which is much-loved and important to the members. “It’s a special place and the building should be preserved, it’s great up there with the big fireplaces and the dancefloor ... we’ve had some great times here,” he said. “People who don’t even play golf are upset about this, they like it to be here ...

AS THE sun sets on 88 years of local history this month, Emerald Golf Club members are making the most of their last chance to play the beloved course. Most importantly, lapping up the chance to play the game they love with their mates. The scenic course, which is home to the Emerald and Olinda golf clubs, will close after Malaysian businessman Alex Wee and BSF Golf Management couldn’t reach an agreement over maintenance of the course. Members of the Wednesday team – also known as Old Farts Golf (OFG) – took time to speak with the ‘Mail’ to celebrate their involvement in the club’s long history. The club has operated since 1928 – and through World War II – with the only break happening from 1993 to the early 2000s, owing to a disagreement between club members and Mr Wee. OFG member Mike Litchfield said the club owed a great debt to both founding and prominent members. “Many of the early members were military serving personnel,” he said. “Among our life members include Maurie Murphy and Sam Ritchie, who played a huge role in making the club what it is today. “One of our most prestigious prizes is the Servicemen’s Trophy, which is made from artillery shells and is very heavy.” The Servicemen’s Trophy has been vied for among civilians and ex-servicemen, and is generally one of the more highly-sought trophies on offer. Mick Petrie reminded that although small in number, the club remained highly competitive to this day. “Both pennant teams won the pennant competition this year – the senior

Sweet bell rings on By Peter Douglas A “SWEET little tune” straight from the creative minds of local primary students will soon ring out from Melbourne’s famed Federation Bells at Birrarung Marr. Though, this is just the beginning for the students’ song ‘Bells of Peace’, which will be developed further and delivered to a wider audience, thanks to $45,000 in Victorian Government funding. Minister for Creative Industries, Martin Foley, and Minister for Education, James Merlino, on Wednesday 14 December gathered at the Upwey High School to announce the Dandenong Ranges Music Council (DRMC) had been granted funds to further develop the song, as part of celebrations in 2018 to mark 100 years since the end of World War I. Project co-ordinator Christine Wallace said the song originated during the Anzac Centenary commemorations last year, with the DRMC working with local primary schools. “The original grant enabled us to do a community project to commemorate the Anzac Centenary,” she said. “The song was our unique way of paying tribute to the original Anzacs, which was written during workshops with the students. “It’s a sweet little song, very simple ... about peace. “The inspiration came after children learned that at the Declaration of Peace, Dame Nellie Melba - who lived in Lilydale - rang the Lilydale CFA bells to announce the world was at peace in 1918.” Initially, ‘Bells of Peace’ was composed for handbells, with the

This will involve more than 600 children and community members. Mr Foley said music was a great way to teach children about our past. “From professional artists to schoolchildren, and everyone in
between, music has the power to inspire and connect us,” he said. “This project is a great example of what Dandenong Ranges Music Council does so well.” Meanwhile, Mr Merlino also used the visit to announce that Victoria will be the first jurisdiction to set an excellence target for student achievement in the arts.
Achievement in the arts will be measured by a proportion of students achieving the highest standard in the arts across five areas: music, visual art, dance, drama and media arts. “We know that exposure in school to an arts education can help lift student engagement and attendance and boost results,” he said.
Letters No happy ending I AM retired; I worked my whole life and paid taxes. I am single and own a modest old home in the Dandenong Ranges. I have basic superannuation as I wanted to be responsible and not be on a government pension. However, the Global Financial Crisis halved the amount I expected upon retirement. I now receive a small monthly amount to live on from my fund. I have been receiving a part government pension that has allowed me to maintain my old car and my home. Malcolm Turnbull has seen fit to remove most of that pension as of January 2017. Luckily, I will still have a healthcare card and a whole $71 per fortnight to help me live in a world of rapidly rising prices. That makes my weekly income barely more than the aged pension. So what was the point of going without to have a superannuation fund? It may have been better to have put all my salary into holidays, going out, expensive furniture and a million-dollar home. How is anyone meant to keep a house and car going as well as health insurance and rates etc.? I thought I may be rewarded for being thrifty and having some super. If I had my time over, I would not have put any money into super. This is a warning for those of you who are single and thinking you may be able to retire and live an easy life and go on holidays. Unless you can amass a fortune, there is no point. I am looking to spending all my super now as it costs a large amount to own a home; my other alternative is to sell-up. This government has forever let Australian elders down; I wonder if they care when they go home to their million-dollar homes and live off their lucrative pensions they get from us who worked and paid taxes? Shakti McLaren, Belgrave.
Here’s what you need to know during ring the level crossing removal works.. Upcoming changes to the Belgrave and Lilydale line. ‘Tsunami’ of crime hits our local shires By Jodie Symonds CRIME involving theft in Cardinia and the Yarra Ranges local government areas has increased significantly since September 2015, latest figures show. Crime Statistics Agency statistics for the Yarra Ranges show an increase of 1424 recorded offences, in addition to an increase of 639 offences in Cardinia. In total, there were 7543 offences in Cardinia, up from 6904 in the past 12 months. The Yarra Ranges notched 8862 offences in September this year, up from 7438 in September 2015. Member for Gembrook and Shadow Minister for Emergency Services Brad Battin said as the fire season approached it was clear figures showed Cardinia as more prone to arson offences.
Ed O'Donohue says the community is now less safe. 147395
They’re ever Ready2Go EMERALD-BASED Echo Youth and Family Services’ Ready2Go program has been recognised for its work in helping vulnerable and isolated people during high-heat days. At the Victorian Fire Awareness Awards on 1 December, the organisation won the Access and Inclusion category, as well as received the RACV Insurance Award for Excellence for best community project, which included a $10,000 grant. The program is designed to fill an important gap in social services, with trained volunteers visiting participants leading up to hot days and forecast dangerous bushfire conditions. The volunteers ensure the par-
ticipants are safe, hydrated and can assist them and their pets to leave early, through partner support organisations. Presently in the hands of a steering committee, including community organisations within Cardinia Shire, the Ready2Go program operates in Cockatoo. However, plans are in place to expand the program to cover Emerald in 2016-'17, in partnership with the Emerald RSL and Emerald Rotary. If you are interested in learning more this program, contact Echo Youth and Family Services on 5968 4460, or visit www.echo.org.au.
Fire restrictions in place AS the region enters an increased period of fire risk, Cardinia Shire has declared a Fire Danger Period, which will bring restrictions around burning off. While Yarra Ranges Shire is yet to follow suit, residents within Cardinia Shire should take particular note of the restrictions that are now in place. During the Fire Danger Period,
there are a host of restrictions which cover not only burn-offs, but barbecues, wildlife scaring guns, vehicle access, welding and use of farm machinery. It is the responsibility of every individual using fire to ensure they comply with fire-restriction laws. For more details, visit www.cardinia.vic.gov.au, www.cfa.vic.gov.au or www.delwp.vic.gov.au.
“These statistics confirm what every resident fears - crime is plaguing the area, and we have a premier soft on crime,” Mr Battin said. Minister for Police Edward O’Donohue said the statistics showed that the community had become less safe. “This isn’t a crime wave, this is a crime tsunami,” he said. Victoria’s latest crime statistics showed 54,219 burglaries and break and enters in the past 12 months, 186,636 thefts, 23,768 offences of drug use and possession and 23,114 motor vehicle thefts. Some of the key statistics include theft in Lilydale recording an increase of 76 offences; drug use and possession increased by 65 offences; the use of weapons and explosives increased by 33 offences and breaches of orders in-
creased by 87. Theft in Ferntree Gully had increased by 33 offences and arson crimes decreased by three offences. In Monbulk, theft offences increased by 41 offences, and in Cardinia, theft increased by seven offences. Robbery in Cardinia had increased by 17 offences - stalking, dangerous and negligent acts endangering people increased by 25, arson increased by 42 offences and burglary and break and enters increased by 270 offences. Sexual offences also increased by 24 in the past 12 months. Property and deception offences in Kalorama had increased by nine offences since 2015. Gembrook crimes including theft increased by four offences to 19 up from 15.
Activity tracking for benefits By Kath Gannaway BREAST-CANCER survivors across Yarra Ranges are being asked to consider taking part in a Cancer Council Victoria trial aimed at tracking activity benefits post treatment. The ACTIVATE trial is a 12-week study aimed at analysing the physical activity of breast cancer survivors. CCV spokesperson Joseph Regan said although increasing physical activity after a breast cancer diagnosis had been shown to improve survival and other health outcomes, new Australian research shows that 84 per cent of women who have had breast cancer did not meet physical activity guidelines. The study, planned for the three months from January to March 2017, will focus on women aged over 50 diagnosed with stage I-III breast cancer. Volunteers eligible for the trial must be post-menopausal at the time of diagnosis, have completed primary
treatment at least six months ago and be doing less than the 75 minutes of moderate physical activity each week.
Mr Regan said all participants would be given a Garmin vivofit 2 fitness tracking watch as part of the study

which aims to test whether using wearable technology can increase physical activity and reduce sitting time among women who have undergone treatment for breast cancer. Judy Sturt, Convenor of Yarra Valley Ladies in Pink Family Cancer Support Group, said the group’s aim was specifically to help people in their day to day struggle with the disease, but that research was important for the long term. “People live with the disease daily, but research has an important role to play,” Ms Sturt said. “We would encourage people to have a look at this trial and see if it is something that suits them and their situation,” Ms Sturt said. Mr Regan said CCV would like to have people signed up for the trail before Christmas. For further information or to sign up: www.cancervic. org.au/activate.

Watch out for grinches By Peter Douglas MOUNT Evelyn Neighbourhood Watch is reminding the community the Christmas period can bring increased risk of theft from either your home or vehicle. Particularly as many residents head off on holidays during the festive season, incidence of such crime can rise substantially in many areas. So, car and home-owners are being urged to do their due diligence and
ensure they do everything possible to avoid being a target this Christmas period. Anne Welsh, from the Mount Evelyn Neighbourhood Watch, said local police and the group had been co-ordinating a program locally that tried to prevent thefts from a motor vehicle. Ms Welsh said crime prevention officers had been highly active in the region, handing out brochures, particularly to ‘tradies’.
The information offers simple advice such as not leaving wallets or mobile phones within clear view of any would-be thief. “Tradies can be vulnerable as their vehicles can be exposed for long periods of time, and they also often carry expensive tools,” she said. “We’ve had great support from the police on this program, which has hopefully helped.” The brochures encourage tradespeople to ‘secure your tools’, saying
‘police have recently identified a significant rise in the number of incidents involving tools being stolen from utilities, vans and trailers belonging to tradesmen’. However, Ms Welsh said homeowners needed to be as equally vigilant. The message includes, ‘car thieves may be either opportunistic or professional ... most car thefts occur in or around private residences, so it is important to take steps to protect your car, even when it is parked in a garage,
driveway or residential street’. Recent crime statistics within the Yarra Ranges, compiled through the Crime Statistics Agency, showed a rise in thefts in the region. In the 2016 financial year, there were 2504 reported incidents of theft within the Local Government Area. This figure was an increase from the 1984 incidents reports in the previous financial year, which represents a rise of 26.2 per cent.

Upwey band By Peter Douglas UPWEY Primary School celebrated its incredible efforts in the Elastic Band Challenge on Friday, 16 December, winning the overall prize locally after collecting more than 6000 bands. Elastic bands pose a serious threat to platypus populations, as well as other animals, because they can get tangled around their necks and bodies, which can lead to cuts, infec-
tions and - sometimes - strangulation. To combat this danger, the Platypus Education Group, which is funded through Yarra Ranges Council, ran programs in Dandenong Ranges primary schools and set the challenge. In total, the 14 schools involved collected 17,166 bands, of those Upwey Primary School collected 6391. Yarra Ranges Mayor Noel Cliff presented the school with
a certificate and a beautiful Platypus mosaic, which was created by local artist, Sioux Dollman. Upwey Primary School has also become the Official Protectors of Wild Bill - the world’s oldest platypus who lives in Monbulk Creek. Posters will be placed in both Birdsland and Belgrave Lake Park to commemorate their fantastic achievement, as well as that of all the students involved.
Mater Christi’s VCE results in spotlight MATER Christi College is again celebrating as its VCE students achieved some excellent results. Saran Kim was the top student and college dux after attaining at ATAR of 99.8. Meanwhile, 21 girls achieved an ATAR above 90, with 50 per cent of students achieving an ATAR above 70. Principal Mary Fitz-Gerald said she was delighted with the results. “The diversity of directions - from VCE, VCAL, VET and some students involved individually in Distance Ed programs - attests to the comprehensive nature of our school. The class of 2016 has indeed created many exciting opportunities for their future pathways.” Pictured are some of the pleased VCE students. Culture explosion at Burrinja By Peter Douglas BURRINJA Cultural Centre officially unveiled its jam-packed 2017 performance season on Thursday, 8 December. With divine ballet and gorgeous classics, sultry cabaret, drama to enrapture and fabulous family shows, 2017 at Burrinja offers something for everyone, right at home in the Dandenong Ranges. Just some of the highlights next year will include performances from the Nicholas Chamber Orchestra in March, as well as Kate Ceberano and Paul Grabowski who will hit the stage for ‘An evening with Australia’s music icons’. Meanwhile, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow will hit town, as well as a performance of Roald
Dahl’s beloved classic, ‘The Witches’. For family audiences, in October will be ‘Grug and the Rainbow’, with the iconic book character to come to life on stage. Meanwhile, at Burrinja until 12 February, guests can catch Wominjeka: A New Beginning, which traces cultural communities and explores new modes of creative practice in South Eastern Aboriginal art and cultures. Featuring a diverse array of materials and techniques - including painting, animal skin cloaks and textiles, bark and feather flowers, clay shields and digital prints - this landmark exhibition brings together specially commissioned work by five cross-generational early career artists; Georgia MacGuire, Aunty Mar-
lene Gilson, Mitch Mahoney, Josh Muir and Raymond Young. Exhibitions co-ordinator Angie Taylor said people should take the time to view this exhibition. “The exhibition is an opportunity to view some of the Koorie Heritage Trust’s precious collection items together with artwork by contemporary Indigenous artists,” she said. “The contemporary Indigenous artists have created artworks in response to items from the Koorie Heritage Trust collection.” Burrinja Cultural Centre is located at 351 Glenfern Road, Upwey. For more information on the program, visit www.burrinja.org.au.
Top 10 best films of 2016 By Seth Lukas Hynes 2016 was a somewhat mediocre year for movies, with the usual glut of sequels, remakes and other franchise extenders. As ever, the independent and foreign circles (which are predominantly represented here) were the best sources of originality and artistic vision, but films like Deadpool, Zootopia, Dr Strange and 10 Cloverfield Lane demonstrated that there is still creativity and risk-taking in the Hollywood machine. Here are my picks for the top 10 best films of 2016. 10. The Nice Guys. This hilarious ’70s crime noir features Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe as a delightfully dysfunctional double-act and a screenplay full of wit and energy. 9. Midnight Special. A subtle subversion of the current superhero boom, Midnight Special is a contemplative sci-fi road-trip movie about a family banding together to protect their gifted son from the government. 8. Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Another brilliant offbeat comedy by Kiwi director Taika Waititi, Hunt for the Wilderpeople skilfully balances quirky humour with a poignant father-son dynamic. 7. The Founder. A stylish, outstanding character study that pulls no punches in its portrayal of the McDonald’s franchise’s early days. Star Michael Keaton will almost certainly be nominated for Best Actor at next year’s Oscars. 6. Green Room. A taut, unrelentingly grim thriller, Green Room is an ultra-violent masterpiece
of tension, and features Patrick Stewart as a sinister skinhead leader. 5. Girl Asleep. The other Top 10 film with a ’70s setting, Girl Asleep is a surreal, wonderfully stylish and touching film about the topsy-turvy emotions and social hardships of adolescence. 4. The Witch. Like Green Room, The Witch is a riveting work of sustained psychological suspense, maintaining both supernatural mystery and a vivid descent into madness, as paranoia and superstition cause a banished pilgrim family to turn on themselves. This film also sets a new standard for historical accuracy. 3. Arrival. Using alien visitation as commentary on human nature and the joys of knowledge, Arrival is deeply insightful and mind-altering, but built from a sturdy foundation of intimate emotion. 2. The Daughter. Based on the Henrik Ibsen play The Wild Duck, The Daughter is a superbly-acted, profoundly moving drama about the crushing secrets hidden within so many happy families. The Daughter attains a rare level of tonal perfection, in that it’s melancholic and often heartwrenching while never once feeling overblown or manipulative. 1. Shin Godzilla. This may be a self-indulgent choice for number one, given my lifelong love of Godzilla movies, but Shin Godzilla really is a fantastic film with engaging characters, awesome action, compelling themes and clever humour.

It’s the end EMERALD GOLF WITH the curtains drawing ever closer at Emerald Golf Club, members rolled in for a little slice of stableford in warmly, pleasant conditions with the course looking a picture. Ian Cranston (23) played a blinder to come in with a whopping 44 points to dominate the leaders’ board for an overall win and in B Grade. In A Grade, the major judge, with one leg raised and eyes crossed, was faced with a count back and it ended
with Mike Litchfield (13) pipping Ken Hill (17) at the post when they both carded 39. Of those who won nothing but the warm, fuzzy buzz of satisfaction, Ian Scott (27) had 42, Philip Crossley (21) 41, Allan Ecclestone (24) 38 and Broc Reynolds (13) managed 37. Ecclestone was nearest the pin on the 4th, Scott on the 7th, Peter Clowes the 2th, Litchfield the 13th and Reynolds captured the pro pin cash on the 18th and Ross Martin out-drove the crew with a slashing drive on the 9th.
Once again, the ladies comp was a very close affair with Petunia Jones just heading Leanne Morison and Joanne Keys on the very last hole. On Wednesday, when the Obviously Faded Golfers limped in it emerged that a stableford event was on the table. Mick Petrie slayed the field with a great round and 44 points with Leigh Morison next on 43. Bobby Kennedy and Seppy Krummenacher were next on 42, while Dennis Fuller cobbled together 41.

raved mid-competition added to the fun of the evening. Thanks to all the parents and athletes who helped to set up and pack up. Next round is Saturday, 14 January. The senior team competed in Round 9 of the AV Shield on Thursday night at a cold, windy Nunawading track. A small team competed hard with some very good results, contributing towards team wins for the Open Men and Open Women, while the Women Under 16s and Under 14s teams finished close seconds. The next round is on Saturday, 7 January, at Nunawading. That is it for 2016. The club looks forward to seeing you all back again in 2017. All-round Wheeler job By Steve Brown CAMERON Wheeler’s all-round efforts - taking 5/30 and making 42 - ensured Upwey-Tecoma took the points over Eildon Park. Quentin Wells top scored with 53 for Upwey while Eildon Park skipper Monto Perera took three wickets as the Tigers posted 9/193 in their allotted overs. In response, George Harrison (55) took the Panthers to 155 runs. The win sees Upwey move into second spot while Eildon Park holds onto fourth by percentage. The Basin won their second game of the season with Jake Best (114) and Scot Vozzo (73*) leading the way. The Bears lost three wickets setting a target of 230 for Mountain Gate. The Gators were well served by Clint Buckland (55) and Luke Bowyer (42) although they ended their chase at 8/201. The Basin will be looking to string some games together after being inconsistent in the first half of the season. Ferntree Gully fell short in a close game against Knox Gardens going down by 11 runs. The Falcons set the pace making 6/178 thanks to Jarrod Butcher (48) and Niraj DeSilva (38)with Peter Mannaert taking three wickets. Jayden Bradbury (72) did everything within his power to get the Blues over the line. Going into the last over, the Blues required 14 runs with two wickets in hand but two run-outs ended the game. Adam Wild’s three wickets has him as leading wicket taker with 20 scalps. Knoxfield’s top order again stood tall
as they chased down Belgrave’s 166. The Magpies’ Jake Balfour made 50, while Adith Sundaresh took three wickets in their innings before Trentin Scholfield (66) and Tom Boxell (63*) saw the Knights home. A game clear on top, the Knights are well on their way to a repeat of last year’s efforts. Upper Gully’s 7/198 was too taller a target for Monbulk as they were bundled out for 113. Luck (53), Henry (47), and Dowling (33) did the job with the bat for the Kings. Todd Burley’s 3/14 made sure Daniel Clark (57) was the sole performer for the Hawks. Upper Gully move into third position and are well placed to feature in finals. In DeCoite Shield, Footballers moved to the top of the table after beating Olinda, while the Griffens have Johnson Park to thank as the Sharks took the points over Lysterfield. Rowville celebrated their first win of the season against Knoxfield while South Belgrave was too good for St Johns Tecoma. Cricket returns on 7 January in a Twenty/20 format round. Good luck to the juniors representing FTGDCA in their VMCU games. Norm Reeves Shield Knoxfield 3/167 (Scholfield 66, Boxell 63*) d Belgrave 166 (Balfour 50, Sundaresh 3/44); Upwey Tecoma 9/183 (Q. Motoring Keeping young drivers safe YOUNG Victorian drivers are being kept safe, with the Victorian Government playing a role in two key projects boosting young driver safety. As part of the P Drivers Project, a young Victorian will be driving home in a brand-new Toyota Yaris five-door ZR Hatch today, thanks to her participation. Member for Eastern Metropolitan Shaun Leane on Friday, 9 December, announced the end of the research project and congratulated Erin Mutton from Lilydale, who was the major prize winner after completing all of its modules. Erin was one of more than 5000 young Victorians who completed all modules of the project, where participation extended over a 15-month period. The P Drivers project involved the development and trialling of a behavioural change program that aims to reduce the number and severity of crashes involving young, newly licensed drivers. It included facilitated group sessions, on-road coaching, self-assessments and numerous surveys for young drivers who had recently obtained their probationary licence. Focusing on reducing high-risk behaviours, the project targeted issues such as speed, gap selection and the
detection and avoidance of hazards. Member for Eastern Metropolitan Shaun Leane said this was an important project. “Young and inexperienced drivers face some of the greatest risk on our roads, and that’s why we’re doing everything we can to keep them safe,” he said. “We can reduce road trauma among young people by rewarding Victoria’s most responsible young drivers. “We want to make sure our young people are coming home to their families safely and we’re doing everything we can to make sure that happens.” Participants were able to reflect on and share their experiences about the challenges they faced as new solo drivers. The P Drivers Project is a joint partnership of the Victorian Government, Australian Government, VicRoads, TAC, Transport for NSW, Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, RACV, and Insurance Australia Group Limited. Findings from the P Drivers Project will be released early next year. In a further boost for young driver safety, Karrikins Group Community Pty Ltd has been appointed to develop the curriculum for the Practical Safe Driving Program in-class and in-car components. The Practical Safe Driving Program
Pictured from left are Robert Huang, manager of Yarra Valley Toyota, winner Erin Mutton and Shaun Leane MP. 163344 will be delivered across the state to provide beginner drivers and supervising drivers with the capabilities to lay the foundations for safe driving, help-
ing to support and enhance Victoria’s Graduated Licensing System. It forms part of the $146 million Young Driver Safety Package - a suite
of five road safety initiatives, designed to improve the safety of these vulnerable road users - that is being funded by the TAC.
Race to number one on road dealers were holding ample stock of both vehicles, leading to intense albeit friendly rivalry between the Corolla and HiLux sales teams. “Australian motorists will determine the eventual winner in a tight contest that looks certain to go down to the wire between these two great vehicles," Mr Cramb said. “Either vehicle will make a worthy victor as they represent impressive capability and value for money in their vastly different segments - just as they have done for decades in Australia and around the world. “The latest HiLux and Corolla designs and engineering add driving pleasure to Toyota’s legendary quality, durability and reliability - and these vehicles continue to represent impressive value for money." HiLux sales last month of 3839 vehicles lifted its 2016 tally to an industry-leading total of 38,018 deliveries
while Corolla is breathing down its neck with 37,403 sales. No other vehicle has reached 35,000 sales. A full-year victory for HiLux will make history as it would be the first time a utility has become Australia’s bestselling car. It would mean snatching the title from its stablemate Corolla which has held the accolade for each of the past three years. Significant milestones will add to any sales celebrations as Corolla is marking 50 years of sales while HiLux has been sold in Australia for 45 years. Toyota’s other sales highlights last month include HiLux being Australia’s best-selling 4x4, setting a November record of 2905 sales. Toyota’s RAV4 also set a November record with 1593 sales. HiAce van achieved its best November result since 2009.

THE race to decide Australia’s best-selling car for 2016 is too close to call with two Toyota vehicles, HiLux and Corolla, separated by a razor-thin margin at the head of the field. With one month to go, the popular HiLux workhorse has built a narrow lead of just 615 sales after it topped the national sales charts last month. As well as being in the box seat for the number one car, Toyota is also guaranteed to be the top-selling automotive brand in Australia for the 14th year in a row and the 20th time overall. Toyota posted a strong November with a market-leading total of 18,162 sales, which was more than the combined totals of the two closest rivals. As a result, Toyota dealers have sold almost 190,000 vehicles so far this year - a margin of more than 80,000 over the nearest competitor. Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said
