■ And they have another on the way ...
Family’s IVF gift By Cam Lucadou-Wells THERE’S no doubting that chatty 18-month-old Tom looks set to be particularly spoilt this Christmas. After his doting Doveton parents Jo and Ben Coelho tried to start a family for five fretful years, it’s no surprise Tom is going to be showered with gifts. During that uncertain prelude, the mind games were torturous as their friends successfully conceived. Jo and Ben wondered what was “wrong” with them. Why was their much-yearned plan for children so elusive? Now they beam with pride as they speak of their sparky toddler with a love of food, books, the beach, Hey Dougie and the family’s Pug. Ben smilingly speaks of the sleepless nights, teething and the ups and downs of early parenthood.
“It’s all worth it,” he said. Jo adds: “I still can’t believe it.” The Coelho’s saviour was in-vitro fertilisation treatment (IVF), unexpectedly so because they’d assumed it was unaffordably expensive. They warily visited a lowcost, bulk-billing Dandenong IVF clinic, The Fertility Centre. “We heard the ad for it on the radio and it advertised that it was much cheaper,” Ms Coelho said. “But we wondered what’s the quality like?” Upon a visit, they were convinced they were in sure, caring hands and that it was their only chance of becoming parents. Still their estimated odds of success were about one in three. Three of Jo’s eggs were frozen. When they found out the first IVF pregnancy failed, the
couple described it as the worst day of their life. Within three months they tried for a second. During a Bali holiday, Jo felt sick - but it was in fact a good omen. For the first time she was pregnant. The next June, Tom was duly born and welcomed to the world. To the couple’s elation, Jo is now 17 weeks pregnant - due to natural conception. They add that conception was expected to be easier after the first IVF pregnancy. The couple also intend to enact their pledge to use all of their stored eggs, and so fertilise the third egg at some stage. Despite some people “looking down” on IVF babies, Jo says: “It’s just as much a miracle. “It’s the same DNA. It’s that extra help for people to have a family.”
Jo, Ben and Thomas Coelho are set for a big Christmas. 163124 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

HAMPTON Park Library has received a record number of gifts under their Forgiving Tree, where library debts are forgiven in exchange for a gift placed under the tree. The gifts are collected by and distributed to local charities to give those who may have missed out otherwise a bright and cheery Christmas. Each Casey Cardinia library branch has a selected local charity the gifts go towards with Hampton Park Library supporting the Hampton Park Community House (Family Support Division). Libraries in the region will be accepting gifts for their charities until 24 December and all gifts and non-perishable foods will be accepted. Star Photographer Stewart Chambers visited the Hampton Park library to check out the huge pile of presents donated to the Forgiving Tree.

Workers in dust storm By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Glenora Way report regular and severe hay-fever, skin hives, asthma attacks, coughing and sore eyes suffered by children, young and old residents alike. Like the residents, Mr Prvulovic said both the EPA and Casey council had been handballing his complaints in recent weeks. Neither had told him that neighbouring businesses had also complained of the pollution. The EPA issued a Pollution Abatement Notice against Supreme Organic Soils (SOS) in O’Grady Road in July 2015. It revoked the notice several months later after SOS complied with an odour management plan including buying a water tanker. The state pollution authority stated it received 17 pollution reports since 1 January 2014 relating to dust, odour and smoke from residents to the south of O’Grady Road and visitors to the north. “Many of the reports did not identify an alleged source, only that they had experienced amenity impacts.”

MANURE and soil dust as well as sawdust has been “raining on us” for years, say workers just 50 metres north of increasingly notorious soil and mulch yards on O’Grady Road, Hallam. During what could be described as a light shower of dust in Bolt Court, industrial chemist Zebolitar Prvulovic said vehicles needed to be hosed down daily and factory doors firmly shut in response to the invasive dirt that has been falling on workplaces. In a recent heavy-pollution week, Mr Prvulovic coughed for four days straight, and has taken to wearing a charcoal-filtered mask outside. “We can’t take in the bacteria (that’s on the dust). It’s not sterile,” the science graduate said. “That’s why we cough.” Even inside his factory, Mr Prvulovic works within marquees in an effort to keep his intermediate sunscreen chemicals free from dust contaminants. His neat warehouse laboratory barely has a surface spare of the red and dark film. Neighbouring workers Jason and Ethan Walker said in that same week, their yard was “caked” with the pollution. Normally their trucks have to be cleaned of deep build-ups of silt at least twice a day. “It’s too fine to stop it,” Jason said. “You open up the roller door and it goes through the factory.” Meanwhile, Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) confirmed it was investigating several businesses in O’Grady Road - and would consider pollution notices and sanctions against the offenders. EPA southern metro manager Marleen Mathias said EPA officers recently inspected a business in the area to “address community concerns”. Officers then observed several other businesses that may be contributing to the dust issue, Ms Mathias said. “While officers observed some dust plumes at the industrial sites, most of the dust had dissipated before it could impact on nearby properties. “EPA will continue with its inquiries at each of the identified sites to determine if any work being undertaken may be contributing to dust emissions.” The EPA thinks an unsealed local road may contribute to the problem and has advised Casey council of remedies including a reduced speed limit, Ms Matthias said. The council also applied dust suppression to the road in the past week. The wider investigation comes several years since businesses in Bolt Court as well as residents in Hampton Park say they started complaining about the odours and dust. Countdown to decision By Cam Lucadou-Wells COULD there be a Christmas miracle in store for Narre Warren North’s John Foy? In days, Planning Panels Victoria member Con Tsotsoros is expected to rule on whether Casey Council can compulsorily acquire Mr Foy’s 34acre home, garden and habitat lake for a three-pitch soccer reserve. Mr Foy, 78, objects to the proposal - not least the access road that would plough through his house, hundreds of native plantings and the sanctuary for all sorts of wildlife that he’s created over the past 35 years. He wishes that Mr Tsotsoros - who held the one-day hearing at Casey Civic Centre on 1 December - had ventured up the road to see the persuasive splendours of the property first-hand. “How can you make a decision without visiting the property, to see the work that I’ve done? “I think it’s a terrible waste of a good house, for a start.” Besides, he lists several varieties of frogs and water birds, including the scarse freckled duck and the shoveller that have lived here. This spring, Pacific Black ducks raised offspring in nesting boxes on the lake’s island and venture via Mr Foy’s network of frog ponds to Eumemmerring Creek. Scores of ibis at a time, gang gang cockatoos, kangaroos, honey-eaters, robin red-breasts, blue wreens and copperhead snakes have been sighted since Mr Foy transformed bare paddocks and a tiny billabong. Mr Foy is pretty happy with his handiwork, though he wishes he made the lake even larger. “It’s the only thing I wished I had have done.” Casey council has justified the

It also has plans to build the “missing link” in a trail between Frog Hollow Reserve and Lysterfield Lake. The trail section would follow Eumemmerring Creek bisecting the property. Mr Foy said he has had the looming acquisition “hanging over my head” 1213124-EB02-16
for close to a decade. Yet he said he and neighbouring residents were “ill prepared” for the final act due to Casey delaying its release of the full details of its plans. It was not until days before the hearing that Mr Foy learnt of the plotted destruction of the house, garden and lake. Had they known of the scale of the project, more neighbours would have objected, Mr Foy said.
Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS “The council secrecy is the big issue and they’re well known for it. They’re things I should have told the (panel) hearing.” Casey statutory planning manager Duncan Turner said publicly exhibited information had included reference to “the future expansion of district leisure and sporting facilities”, as well as the shared user path link. The owners of the property, owners and occupiers of surrounding land

were notified of the amendment’s exhibition in writing, Mr Turner said. From legal advice, Mr Foy believes there’s no point trying to appeal the panel decision if it goes against him. Appeals rarely win, he was told. He has no plans of where to move instead. Despite the lawful compensation he’d receive, no place would replicate his home. “Besides, I haven’t lost this battle yet.”

Casey crime up By Victoria Stone-Meadows LATEST crime statistics show an overall increase of 17 per cent in the number of offences between September 2015 and 2016 across the Casey municipality. The City of Casey saw the largest increase in abduction and related offences and justice procedures. Abduction and related offences are crimes that include abduction, false imprisonment, slavery and sexual servitude or any crime that hinders a person’s personal movement or freedom. From September 2015 to September 2016, the City of Casey saw a 70 per cent increase in these types of crime per 100,000 of the population. With an offender number of 49 over the 12 month period to September 2016, a person is abducted or held against their will in the City of Casey at a rate of almost one a week. Justice procedures includes crimes that hinder the justice system such as escaping from custody, failing to appear in court and resisting or hindering an officer had a 208 per cent increase across the population. Other types of crime that increased in Casey over 12 months are theft by deception, burglary and break and enter, arson, robbery, and homicide and related offences. Statistics from the Crime Statistics Agency of Victoria show that while the City of Casey has had an increase in crime overall, it is not the most crime-ridden area in the state. The top five local government areas for increases in crime over 12 months are Melbourne, Latrobe, Yarra, Horsham, and Greater Dandenong. However, the crime stats do show some areas of crime across Casey have fallen including government regula-

what it was like to be idolised as national heroes. The players performed soccer tricks, posed for photos and autographs, much to the awe of staff and students, Maranatha principal William Jackson said. “It was definitely a day for all to remember and there were many high fives and laughs among staff, students and players.”
SOME of Brazil’s finest soccer players shared their immense skills and exuberance in a sports clinic at Maranatha Christian School, Doveton. As part of the Tour of Hope, former World Cup members such as Mineiro, Elivelton, Paulo Sergio, Fabio, Felipe, Lamartine and Robert told students

offenders under the age of 18 is quite low; this trend reflects trends reported in the News on 8 December. Crime Statistics Agency Chief Statistician Fiona Dowsley said that the majority of offenders were adults. “In the year to September 2016, only 12 per cent of offenders were aged between 10 and 17, and more than half of all offenders were aged between 18 and 34,” she said. However, Shadow Minister for Police Ed O’Donohue sees the increase in crime in the City of Casey as a direct result of mismanagement by the current premier. “These statistics just confirm what every resident in Casey already knows,” he said. “That our community has become less safe under Daniel Andrews with home invasions, carjackings, drive-by shootings and gangs such as Apex running amok.” Mr O’Donohue called on the Andrews Government to take a tougher stance on crime to prevent the rates climbing any higher. “Under Daniel Andrews the justice system is in crisis due to weak sentencing, watered down bail laws, repeal of move on laws, cuts to frontline police and closure of police stations,” he said. Superintendent Hollowood meanwhile urged people to take care over the Christmas break and warned everyone to ensure their security measures were up to scratch. “The important message is that as we move into the traditional holiday period, unattended houses and businesses can become easy targets for criminals,” he said. “It is important that adequate security precautions are taken if you are away from your vehicle, home or business.”

tory offences falling over 60 per cent across the area. Government regulatory offences include crimes related to betting and gaming, liquor and tobacco licensing, pornography and censorship, intellectual property, and prostitution. Another area where crime has fallen in Casey is the cultivation and manufacture of drugs, with a fall of about 50 per cent from September 2015 to 2016. Victoria Police Superintendent for Southern Metro Region Paul Hollowood said the figures reflected the trend in increased police reporting of various types of crime. “Much of the increased offending centres upon vehicle crime such as theft of and theft from vehicles that are primarily used in respect to the commission of secondary crime including robbery, burglary, theft, and arson,” he said. “Much of the assault, abduction, stalking and harassment relate to family violence incidents.” “We’ve had a zero tolerance approach to family violence which is reflected in the rise in justice procedures and breach of orders offences.” Superintendent Hollowood also said the increase in crime figures could also be attributed to the high number of police and more active duties over the last 12 months in Casey. “The increase in recorded crime is also attributable to increased police activity, particularly by our local Criminal Investigation Unit, Divisional Response Unit and the Southern Metro Region Crime Team who are undertaking a broad range of targeted investigations into criminal groups,” he said. Statistics from across the state show that crime committed by youth

On ya bike, mate LOCALLY owned bike store chain, Bicycle Superstore, is looking back proudly on a year of community engagement and contribution. The retail chain operates eight stores from Geelong to Mornington, including one at Fountain Gate, but hasn’t let this broad vision affect its local community perspective. Bicycle Superstore has a mission to make bike riding accessible to all - because bike riding is fun, it’s healthy and helps to keep us connected to our community. Bicycle Superstore staff believe that everybody can benefit from cycling, no matter their location or circumstances. Many of the stores organise their own group rides in the early morning or in the evening, which are particularly popular during the summer months, giving customers the opportunity to meet like-minded bike riders and to discover new places to safely ride. Bicycle Superstore has also offered skills training sessions on mountain bike trails and also hosted a number of demonstration days, offering free trials on the new season’s mountain bikes at Lysterfield Park and the You Yangs. During the year, Bicycle Superstore partnered with the City of Casey to support programs for local schools, including the Walk2School program, and will be involved again in its school holiday program. It has also

Bicycle Superstore also became involved with Berwick’s Insight School for the Blind and Vision Impaired, conducting an information session for its students and donating a bike and scooter to assist the students in their quest for greater mobility and independence. Bicycle Superstore has long been associated with Bikes for Humanity, a not-for-profit charity which organises the shipment of good quality used bikes to communities in developing countries. When customers decide to buy a new bike this Christmas, Bicycle Superstore also welcomes the donation of
their old bicycles, destined for a second life in Africa where they will allow new business opportunities to be created and countless families be given new mobility. Coming into the holiday season, Bicycle Superstore offers a huge range of kids and family bikes, commuter and classic bikes, a new range or electric bikes, in addition to performance road and mountain bikes - backed up by advice from its experienced staff who will ensure that everybody can be matched with a bike that meets their particular needs. Home treats BERWICK Panthers Basketball Club will receive $2600 for new training equipment, thanks to Holden’s Home Ground Advantage program. The Panthers were founded in 2010 with just three junior basketball teams and a total of 24 players. The club’s aim of encouraging local children to be active and play in a team-based sport has paid off, with 2016 seeing 45 teams of 350 plus junior players registered. In 2013, the club joined the Casey Basketball Association (CBA) so there was a pathway for representative players. Now, 50 plus members compete at representative level with Victorian Junior Basketball League. The club had seven new teams start in the summer season and the grant funding will go towards some much-needed new training equipment. Panthers club president Lana Cairns said, “Providing these items to teams assists every player to get the most out of training and therefore games. And for this our club is incredibly grateful to be a recipient of the grant. Encouraging children to be active in a team sport assists our community by promoting engagement, social

Be Quick Once in a while a property will appear that ticks all your boxes and today you just found it. We have 4 bedrooms to see your child happy regardless if they are 2 years old or 22 years old. This property has enough room inside and out to ensure your family can stay inside on those cold winter days or get out and about in the backyard on the summer days to come. You could also find yourself spending time in the fully enclosed pergola area which is almost more of an extension
on the house. When looking for a place to call home we all know location is extremely important so please feel free to tick another one of those boxes, as this property is set in a fantastic location. A short walk to the child care centre and schools, public transport is literally around the corner and with the upgrade done to Casey Central Shopping Centre there is not much more one could want at their fingertips. Be quick and act now as this property will be gone as quick as it appeared.

In 2015 Backpacks 4 Vic Kids delivered 732 backpacks. Demand has grown dramatically and to date this year the group has delivered 1300 packs to children in need. It operates solely on donations sought through fundraising grants and sponsorship. After hearing this, the team at SJD Homes wanted to help. Staff now bring in items to donate for the backpacks and a live band fundraising night was held which raised more than $9800.

SITUATED at the top end of one of Berwick's best-kept secrets, Vista Court, sits this wonderful home for all seasons. Positioned to take full advantage of views to the west over parkland, the established gardens provide privacy and a peaceful lifestyle. Three separate living areas, four bedrooms, soaring ceilings and an open plan provide light and space. Ducted heating, evaporative cooling and the solar heated pool all add to the amenity this home provides. Two separate timber decked alfrescos and a generous sized allotment complete the package. Whether you want to just sit back and enjoy the sunsets overlooking the pool or take a leisurely stroll to Berwick Village via walking trails, you will not be disappointed.

The focus of the clinic is to bring the latest and best advances in clinical orthodontics including braces to the CaseyCardinia community. Staff aim to provide caring and experienced treatment by a registered Australasian Orthodontic Board-certified specialist orthodontist. Green and gold glory By Nick Creely
Pakenham pitcher Lachlan Madden was part of a successful Australian side in Mexico. Picture: BASEBALL AUSTRALIA
IT’S been just over a month since Lachlan Madden touched down at Melbourne Airport. The 20-year-old baseball star was a part of the Baseball Australia Under 23 world cup team, where the Aussies claimed historic silver in Mexico from late October to early November. Despite going into the tournament as extreme outsiders, the Aussies showed off their trademark grit, grinding out win after win, even with foreign and at times daunting conditions. And Madden told the News that despite it being slightly different from home, he nonetheless enjoyed the experience of wearing the green and gold. “This was my first time in Mexico, but not my first time playing in a Latin country, but the culture is definitely different over there, I still enjoyed the experience and seeing a new country,” he said. “Mexico was definitely an experience, in saying that the tournament itself was run really well and the facilities were for the most part very nice, I really enjoyed the trip to Mexico.” It was a brilliant tournament for the Australian team, stunning the other nations to quality for a do or die clash against top ranked side Japan, where they narrowly went down fighting despite giving the champs a scare. “The team was outstanding, we had an extremely short time to come together and get ready but we all gelled really well,” he said. “The team wasn’t the best team on paper but we all worked together and had the same goals. “We all were extremely proud to wear the Australian uniform.”
On an individual sense, Madden shone bright, and despite limited opportunities, did his job and played a major part of the country’s success. “I feel like I did well, but I didn’t get slot of game time due to my role as a short reliever but I’m very happy with my performance nonetheless,” he said. It’s been an intriguing journey for the talented Berwick Dodger and Cheltenham Rustler, who was signed out of high school a few years back by the Houston Astros, before being cut early in 2016 despite some strong performances. Across the 20-year-old’s 34-game minor league career, he had eight saves and 40 strikeouts from 46.2 innings pitched, numbers that suggest Madden has the talent to make it in the big time. Only a few months ago, Rustlers vicepresident John Ferguson said that the experience of being cut by the Astros, despite the disappointment, probably matured him and made him re-think how he goes about his game. “He’s really reinvented himself as a mature age player, and that takes a bit of doing,” Ferguson said. “After his professional experience, he’s really coming back and making the most of the Australian scene, which is quite a strong scene.” Speaking about the future, Madden does not know where his career will take him, but the taste of international experience this year has him hungry to go one step further with the Aussies. “I’m unsure where my career will go from here, but I do dream of playing in the Olympics in 2020, which baseball has recently been put back into the Olympics but there is a long road to putting the Australian team in the Olympics,” he said.
Dogs ready for Gippsland Sprint TRAINERS from Gippsland and kennel stars from across the state are set to compete for a share of more than $800,000 in prizemoney during the Gippsland Carnival which kicks off at Sale on Boxing Day. The first running of the Gippsland Sprint Series will see Melbourne Cup runner-up Jesaulenko and Pantera Nera represent the Gippsland region in hope of becoming Gippsland Sprint Champion. The Pakenham South-trained Dundee Osprey headlines the $107,250 Group One TRFM Sale Cup field which includes a number of Gippsland stars including Zipping Kane, trained near Sale by Carolyn Jones. Dundee Osprey, trained by Geoff Scott-Smith is one of the fastest greyhounds of the modern era and is likely to start favourite over the testing 650m of the Sale Cup. “It is great to be part of greyhound racing, especially when they are supporting our local Gippsland region,” Scott-Smith said. Hazelwood North-based trainer Gavin Burke has reigning Traralgon Cup winner Pantera Nera targeting the sprint side of the Gippsland Carnival. “It’s a time to celebrate greyhound
racing - GRV are providing our struggling communities not only with funds through local businesses but putting on a carnival where people can enjoy a day out at the greyhounds without breaking the bank,” Burke said. “The Gippsland Carnival can be life changing, especially with more than $800,000 up for grabs. “It’s great to be a part of it and if you can take a small piece of the pie I’m sure it will go a long way to making the New Year even better. “It’s good to have the sprinters and the stayers running in the same atmosphere and the same point system with both type of greyhounds being given a chance to hold the Champion Stayer or Sprinter title.” Western Bulldogs captain Bob Murphy, who was born and bred in Warragul, is the ambassador for the carnival. “The Carnival brings Gippsland together, shines a light on the region and is going to be a good thing for all Gippslanders and visitors," Murphy said. The Gippsland Carnival is a regional Australian-first, connecting four country cups from Sale, through Warragul and Cranbourne to Traralgon. A sprint and distance series will
link all four legs with a Gippsland Champion Sprinter, and Gippsland Champion Stayer, crowned at the end of the carnival. The TRFM Sale Cup will kick off the excitement with its traditional race meeting on Boxing Day, while Traralgon will wrap it up with a grand finale on March 25. Warragul’s feature night will be held January 28 with Cranbourne taking centre stage February 11. Families can also go in the draw to win a trip to Disneyland, by getting their ‘passport’ stamped at two of the four cups. With an underlying theme of ’flying colours’, Colours on Course will give everyone a chance to win a prize for best dressed. Alex Osmond, from Her Wardrobe, was recently announced as fashion partner and has encouraged everyone to get involved. “I am extremely excited to come on board as a fashion partner with Greyhound Racing Victoria, for their inaugural Colours on Course competition,” Ms Osmond said. “I hope to see as many women and men as possible, dressing to the colours and patterns of all eight greyhounds,
Pakenham-South trainer Geoff Scott-Smith will be hoping Dundee Osprey can give him a flying start to the Gippsland Sprint Series in the Sale Cup. Picture: CONTRIBUTED with judges looking for the most styling representation of this.” Greyhound racing generates about $40 million for the Gippsland economy, employing hundreds of local people.
Across Victoria, greyhound racing makes a substantial contribution of more than $300 million to the economy, employing more than 3000 people and generating $1.8 billion in wagering.

Hawks knock Eagles hard By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 & 2 REVIEW - ROUND 6 (Day 2) WITH top-spot on the line, HallamKalora Park were simply inspiring, knocking the reigning champs Cranbourne off its perch, to take top-spot over the Christmas break. Eagles champ Steven Spoljaric elected to bat, where they got off to a solid start, putting on a 50-run partnership for the first wicket before both were dismissed quite quickly. Spoljaric (81 not out) once again dominated the opposition and was just simply too good, and combined with Matt Chasemore (27), put on a valuable 79-run partnership to lift the Eagles to 9/189 off their 40 overs. And it took until the very last over, but the Hawks ran down the hefty total, largely thanks to a terrific knock by Corey Booth (47 not out) and cameos from Jagveer Hayer (34), Jordan Hammond (29) and Leigh Booth (26). Eagles bowlers Steven Spoljaric (1/29), Tim Fathers (1/23) and Cameron Kelly (1/34) all toiled hard in a tough day. Ian Daniel’s special individual performance has seen Narre Warren lose outright for a second consecutive game. After already conceding first-innings points last week, the Magpies resumed the day’s play at 4/29 and with a miracle needed to salvage a positive out of the game. The Magpies eventually succumbed to 166 off 59.2 overs, setting the Bloodhounds just 53 runs for a crucial outright victory. And the Bloodhounds were merci-
less, as Ian Daniel (39 not out) spanked the ball around to reach the total in just nine overs. Special praise needs to go to Daniel, who had a wonderful game, taking 5/18 and 1/24 with the ball, while with the bat made 102 not out and 39 not out. Parkfield have entered the break in disappointing fashion, capitulating to a hungry Heinz-Southern Districts bowling outfit at Parkfield Reserve. With a total of 277 to win, a lot had to go right for the Bears, and it didn’t, with three early wickets halting any chances of pulling off an upset. Lee Brown (4/31) was the pick of the bowlers for the Cobras, while Mark Davies, Chadwick Van Estrop and Paul Stockdale were all major supporting acts. A total of 36 wickets were taken across two days at Greaves Reserve, but Berwick walked off with an empathetic and defining outright victory over Dandenong West. The Bears wasted no time with the blade, swinging hard, as Adam Watson (36), James Wilcock (28), Jarrod Armitage (36) and Jarrod Goodes (30 off 12 balls) all played cameos, before declaring at 6/179 off 33 overs. But a Jarrod Armitage special saw the Westers rolled in just 30 overs and 86 runs on the board - the quick taking 6/27, including a wicket in the first over, to stun the home side. Skipper Jarrod Goodes (2/25) was solid again with the ball, while James Wilcock (1/6) bowled with great pace and aggression. After last week’s washout, a 40 over per side one-dayer was played,
Narre Warren batsman Janaka Liyanabadalge plays a cover drive during the Magpies' heavy loss. 163321 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS with Springvale South taking vital momentum into the break, belting a disappointing North Dandenong outfit. North skipper Jurgen Andersen elected to bat at Lois Twohig Reserve, where they started positively in the first eight overs before the Bloods took
over to roll them for 117 in 39 overs. And the Bloods wasted little time to run down the runs, 23.2 overs in fact, as they secured second spot on the ladder. And Buckley Ridges have narrowly avoided defeat, chasing down 155 against Dingley at Souter Oval after a
slow start with the bat. In Turf 2, Beaconsfield has won outright over Silverton, with Dylan Freitag (4/34 and 7/21) starring with the ball. Cricket will return to the DDCA on 7 January.

CHRISTMAS fireworks of the motoring kind will descend on Nyora Raceway this festive season enticing some of the best competitors to South Gippsland. Nyora will host its last meeting for the year on Thursday 29 December, with events including the Grand in the Hand for Dirt Modifieds, the Speed cars state points feature and the New Year’s Challenge for Open Sedans with competitors expected from Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and throughout Melbourne. In the Dirt Modified’s - the V8 powered beasts that love to hike up on three wheels through the turns - competitors such as Nyora veterans Daryl Hickson and Lloyd Hobson have their sights set on defending home turf whilst Steve Milthorpe from up on the New South Wales side of the Murray River and a host of Bendigo and Echuca based competitors are
keen to hijack the show and run off with the cash. The Speedcars raced recently in Portland with Nyora developed competitor Mitch Whiting coming out on top as the winner. Heading to Nyora where he developed as a Junior racer could well have come at the right moment for Whiting with momentum propelling him to a position of one of the favourites. The likes of Troy Jordan - a veteran of the class with experience against the best in Australia and many years of racing in New South Wales South Gippsland’s own Stuart Ferguson, Ash Booker from North of Melbourne, another Gippslander Paul Farrell, should see a great battle up front for the win. Local heroes will compete in the popular New ’ Challenge for
Open Sedans where V8 power matches up with 6-cylinder consistency. Early nominations include Leigh Bourke, Nick Cockerill and Scott Whittle, all from Geelong, amongst the field with Nyora representation from Donald Young, Joshua Stewart and Troy Glassborrow. Junior Sedans also feature on the program with what is likely to be a dozen car field. Zoe Young will have a number of strong Alexandra club members heading to Nyora to battle her for the top prize. Call Amanda on 0408 076 965 for inquiries. Racing will begin at 5pm Thursday night with entrance prices $20 for an adult, kids 1216 are $10 each, while all other children are free. Pensioners are $10 and a family ticket is $50 for two adults and three 12-16 kids and others less than 12 in age.

Disappointing result
By Russell Bennett
By Nick Creely VIC PREMIER CRICKET REVIEW - ROUND 12 (Day 2) IF there was one team in the competition this season that could defy the odds and chase down 350, it’s Dandenong. Coming into the round as ladderleaders, the confidence out of Shepley Oval was at an all-time high. But now the Panthers must head into the Christmas break sitting in third position, after almost pulling off an unlikely run-chase against Carlton at Princes Park. After Nick Ross plundered a spectacular 130 not out to lift the Blues to 351, the pressure was on as Tom Donnell and Brett Forsyth strode out to the wicket to face the music. The star duo have slaughtered oppositions for many years, and with players having relatively quiet seasons in comparison to their lofty standards, the mood was that they were due for a big score. And despite starting quite slowly, the Panthers looked on track, knocking the ball around with comfort en route to 62. The class of the openers was evident to see, and with the Blues bowlers desperate to claim the first wicket, they were resolute in defense. But then the first domino fell, as Blues quick Scott Woodman (3/80), playing his first game at the top level, got through the gates of star batsman Brett Forsyth (22). It could have been the make or break of the day’s play. With the foundation set, UK import Callum Parkinson, who has complied an impressive season with the blade, kept the momentum flowing, and with some solid stroke-play with Donnell, put on a terrific 90-run partnership that had the Panthers in the box seat. But the triple-strike by leg-spinner Matt Culvenor (3/47) within the space of 30 runs, saw Parkinson (59) and Donnell (80) and Edward Newman (6) walk back to the sheds in disappointment. Some aggressive resistance by Lincoln Edwards (45) and the star allrounder James Nanopoulos (59) saw
Brett Forsyth (keeper) could only watch on as the Panthers just fell short. the score reach 5/279, and with plenty of overs and only 72 runs left to win. It seemed like one of the most impressive wins in a stellar season for the Panthers was truly on the cards. But late strikes, mostly by Ryan Sidebottom (2/64), halted the momentum of the Panthers, as Cameron Forsyth (3) and Tanner Stanton (6) both fell cheaply, and then Adam McMaster (3) fell just before stumps. All-rounder Callum Parkinson said that it was a disappointing result, but was pleased with the fight of the group.
“We are disappointed not to get the target,” he said. “We batted well - Tommy (Tom Donnell) with 80, me and Nano (James Nanopoulos) 59 apiece and LJ (Lincoln Edwards) 45, but noone went on to get the 120 or 130 we needed to get us in a position to get over the line. “They were defensive very early on, ring fields and Sidebottom bowled very well. “Also Ryan Quirk showed good bottle at the end to get us a draw in a game- I don’t think we deserved to lose.
Picture: CONTRIBUTED “But throwing away starts is very frustrating.” The game was eventually drawn, as the Panthers survived until stumps at 9/320, still 31 runs short of victory in a brave effort. But the consequence in such a tight season will have the Panthers finally chasing some tail after failing to secure any points, after both Camberwell and Fitzroy-Doncaster enjoyed crushing wins, and as a result, now occupy the first two spots heading into the break.
Charli leaves others in her wake on the board By Russell Bennett WHAT Kooweerup starlet Charli Russell has achieved so far in her burgeoning wakeboarding career would barely cause a ripple compared to the waves she’s set to make in the years, or even decades to come. Better known as ‘Charch’, her reputation already precedes her and she’s making some of the sport’s biggest superstars stand up and take notice. In fact, some of them have even been in the boat watching on as she’s performed her array of jaw-dropping manoeuvres. In the space of the past 12 months, Charch finished seventh in her age group at the Australian nationals, second in the Victorian state titles, and won Rising Star and Rookie of the Year awards. On her way to winning Rookie of the Year, she won four of the five competitions - finishing with the highest points tally. Charch was set to ride in one of Australian wakeboarding’s own ‘State of Origin’ events - Victoria versus South Australia - back in November but the event had to be cancelled due to flood waters in Mildura. She’s had hardly any training so far
T20 fixture raises queries
Kooweerup's Charli 'Charch' Russell has the wakeboarding world at her feet. this season, but just a couple of weeks ago she came second in the New South Wales/ACT State of Origin in Canberra. The following day she backed that brilliant performance up with third in the first leg of the Australian Open, with the second set to be held in South Australia at the end of January. Charch also walked away from her weekend in Canberra with the judges award, and just happens to be the youngest rider to ever win Wakeboard Victoria’s coveted Rising Star award. Her ride on the Sunday was the high-
est scoring ride in her division across the weekend, and in a sport where riders have to be noticed to be properly recognised, she’s making a huge name for herself. The quality of young female riders rising through the sport currently is incredibly high, and it was Charch who stood out above the pack. Now, she’s performing all her tricks from wake-to-wake, meaning she jumps over the wake, rather than into the middle of it. She’s got a full range of 180s, and
now she’s working on 360s and rolls. Charch has to keep a particularly strong mindset and stay supremely physical fit over the coming years, but her dedication - heightened by the encouragement of her family - knows no bounds. It’s clear to see that the sky is the limit for this young pocket rocket. Charch has received invaluable support from the likes of Elevated Clothing Australia and Ski Force Melbourne throughout her journey so far.
QUESTIONS continue to be raised about the fixturing of the West Gippsland Cricket Association’s (WGCA) Twenty20 Kookaburra Cup competition after arguably its strongest four sides were drawn to face each other in two second round games. Some circles are calling for a seeded draw in the future in order to avoid a repeat of Kooweerup taking on Cardinia and Pakenham hosting Tooradin in Round 2, instead of - potentially - the semifinal stage. Round 2 of the competition so far has been particularly actionpacked, with the Demons proving far too strong for the Bulls last week despite reaching just 9/137 from their 20 overs. Batting first at Denhams Road, Kooweerup champion Chris O’Hara (57) led from the front with an enterprising half-century but young Cody Miller (24) was the only other Demons batsman to pass 20 as the slower bowling of Travis Wheller (1/32), Ben Maroney (2/24), Kim Bentick (1/26), and Dwayne Doig (1/16) combined for five of the nine wickets to fall. But the Bulls’ reply got off to a horrendous start - losing a string of early wickets - which they couldn’t recover from. Kooweerup marquee player, and former club junior Adam McMaster, was bowling with some serious venom and finished with 1/8 while Jess Mathers starred with 3/11. Matt Bright was the other multiple wicket-taker with 2/23. Brad Reiner (25) and Ricky Campbell (11) were the only two Bulls batsmen to reach double figures as their side was skittled for just 78. Elsewhere across Round 2, Upper Beaconsfield (9/130) outlasted Officer (7/124) at home; Pakenham Upper/Toomuc (9/201) destroyed Aura Vale (7/98) off the back of 62 from Casey Thomsen and 4/11 from Nick Kyval; Carlisle Park (7/113) - led by Jason Hameeteman’s 57 - was too strong for Lang Lang (108); skipper John Simpson (68) and Kiefer Peries (74 not out) guided Clyde (5/210) to a dominant win over Cranbourne Meadows (6/157); and some big hitting from Brad Miles (72) and skipper Ash Adams (44 not out), and a brilliant 5/11 from Matt Hutchinson guided Devon Meadows (4/178) home against Merinda Park (143). At the time of going to print, the two games to come in Round 2 of the Kookaburra Cup were Gembrook’s clash at home with closest neighbours Emerald, and Pakenham’s battle with Tooradin - the third time in less than two weeks they’ve faced off in all formats. In other Twenty20 news, Tooradin went down gallantly to South Caulfield in the Cricket Victoria Regional Big Bash. After winning the Region 8 competition, the Gulls headed to enemy territory in Princes Park in Caulfield to face the home side. After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Gulls were dismissed for 128 in the 19th over. The home side looked to be doing it comfortably in their reply, until Jarred Thompson produced one of the great spells - finishing with 6/11 from his four overs - to bring the Gulls right back into it. Ultimately though, it wasn’t enough as South Caulfield reached the total in the 18th over.

By Nick Creely WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION - REVIEW ROUND 8 (One-Day) KOOWEERUP proved a class above in the Premier division, easily brushing aside Upper Beaconsfield in their clash at Upper Beaconsfield Reserve. The home side elected to bat, and despite a terrific half-century to keeper Julian Bayard (57), the Maroons were kept to just 156 off 37 overs. Demons skipper Mark Cooper (4/35) continues to get the job done, while Cal O’Hara (2/35) and Jack Bacon (2/13) continue to impress. And the Demons chased down the total with relative ease, as Jess Mathers (52 not out), Ben Spicer (44 not out), Mark Cooper (30) and Matthew Davey (23) got the job done. The Demons now sit four points ahead on top of the ladder heading into the Christmas break. A spectacular hat-trick from Tooradin paceman Russ Lehman was not enough to see his side home, as Pakenham registered a crucial victory right on the break. The Gulls won the toss and sent the Lions in to bat, and despite a slow start and several stars back in the sheds, the middle-order, led by Rob Elston (39) and Dom Paynter (24) set a decent platform for later in the innings. And that momentum carried through, as Jason Williams (36) and Sean Gramc (40) provided some late fireworks to lift the Lions to 9/192. But the story was Russ Lehman, who took a memorable hat-trick - his first wicket being Jack Anning (0), second being Gramc, caught by Andrew Proctor, and then the third was a stumping by Tom Hussey to remove Williams. But the Gulls got off to the perfect start, as Dom Paynter picked up Daniel Hunt (0) first ball of the innings. Resistance came from skipper Tom Hussey (53), who played a terrific counter-attacking knock, but once he was stumped off the bowling of Sean Gramc (4/32) it was game over. The Gulls ended on 160 off 35.1 overs. Emerald has shocked Merinda Park, defeating them by five wickets at Donnelly Reserve. The Cobras were sent in, as Manu Goraya (64) lifted them to an imposing 8/187 off 40 overs. Ian Litterbach (3/35) was the pick of the bowlers for the Bombers. In reply, the Bombers, particularly Jason Burns (82), were sensational, reaching the total with 2.4 overs left and five wickets in hand. And another century by Neil Barfuss (100) has seen Cardinia dismantle Pakenham-Upper Toomuc in a one-sided affair. The Bulls made 7/280 off 39 overs, with Bradley Reiner (57) also amongst the runs. Then Dwayne Doig (5/17) stole the show with the ball, helping his side clean up the Yabbies for just 128 off 24.2 overs. Meanwhile, in the District Division, Kalgidhar have remained in the strong-hold of second posi-
Vikings batsman Ammar Bajwa shows off his expansive stroke-play. 163322 tion, after brushing aside Cranbourne Meadows with relative ease at Lakeside Oval. The Rebels elected to bat, knocking around 150 off 37.5 overs before being bowled out. Kalgidhar bowlers Gagan Singla (3/25), Sunny Paul (2/22) and Simran Mann (2/23) were all outstanding. In response, the competition’s surprise packets were merciless, belting the ball to all parts and overtaking the Rebels within 22 overs. Devon Meadows were a class above, dismantling Tooradin by over 100 runs. A brutal half-century by Matthew Hutchinson (55 off 38 balls) lifted the Panthers to 9/204 off 40 overs. Chris Brennan (4/39) found some form with the ball, while Tim Lenders (2/33) was consistent as always. And despite a sparkling half-century to Kane Latham (53 off 34 balls), the Gulls were rolled for just 91 in a disappointing batting display. Officer has just fallen short of a thrilling victory, narrowly going down to Clyde at Lineham Oval. Constant wickets halted their momentum in the middle overs, with Anthony Marsden (2/12) particular effective.
But a late flourish by Cougars trio Nick Miles (14), James Abou-Jaber (10) and Nick Sadler (16 not out) lifted them to 9/186. And the Bullants just fell short by just four runs in a terrific effort with the bat. Braydon McHugh (39) and Ash Smith (30) threatened to take the game away from the Cougars, but late wickets ensured they would fall just short. Cougars opening bowler Nick Sadler (3/25) was the difference, while Nick Miles (2/25) bowled accurately and took vital wickets. And finally, a defiant and unbeaten century by Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll skipper Daniel Glen was not enough to register their first win of the season over Carlisle Park Vikings. After the Vikings amassed a brutal 3/248 off their 40 overs, Glen (115 not out) stood tall in one of the performances of the year, as the Marygoons fell for just 166 in 39.3 overs. And in the Sub-District Division, Aura Vale has comfortably knocked off Clyde by four wickets at Narre Warren East Reserve. Some cameos from Dean Williams (22) and Zac Davis (19) lifted them to 143 off 34.4 overs. The Lakers were relatively untroubled in pursuit of the total, reaching it with five overs and four wickets to spare. Paul Hoenderdaal (25), fresh off his century last week, was top-scorer again. Nyora has crushed a disappointing Pakenham by eight wickets in a one-sided affair at Nyora Recreation Reserve. After the Lions won the toss and elected to bat, it all went into disarray, losing three quick wickets before being stunned for just 72 off 31.2 overs. Dylan Ford (3/5) destroyed the tail, while Gavin Hackett (2/11) and Peter Gillian (3/21) were impassable. The Maroons wasted little time with the bat, as Jake Hackett (39 not out) guided them home in just 20.1 overs. Gembrook made it difficult, but Catani has overcome some shaky moments to register a crucial victory at Catani Reserve. The Brookers elected to bat, and they lost an early wicket, and were never really able to recover despite a cameo from skipper Cam Williams (30 not out) - they finished all-out for just 112 off 29 overs. And the Cats eventually found the runs in the 35th over, with Brad McDonald (38) top-scoring. And finally, Cardinia has just fallen short to Lang Lang, in the game of the round at E Gunton Oval. The Swamp Tigers elected to bat, with Owen Milton (70 not out) playing a terrific knock to guide them into a strong position of 5/197 off their 40 overs. And the Bulls very nearly pulled the chase off, with skipper Brad Remy (90) playing a stellar knock. Cricket will return in the WGCA on 7 January, in what will be a round of one-dayers.
