Mr Fraser told the committee that throughput at a new and bigger saleyards could be 2500 head of cattle and sheep a week, as well as goats, which are a growing domestic and overseas market. Cr Kelly and Mr Williams are recorded in the minutes as expressing support for a new saleyards, while Cr McNally said any new saleyards should remain “a core business of the council”. Mr Kirkland supported the project but said the existing saleyards should be retained and not demolished. Continued on page 3

to cope with a forecast increase in livestock sales in Warwick. The minutes then detail that council chief executive officer David Keenan asked Mr Fraser about the “proposed location of the new facility”, to which Mr Fraser replied there was “a suitable parcel of land adjacent to Frasers Transport Depot”. It is understood Mr Fraser is referring here to the 80-acre former Warwick Enterprise Park on the Old Stanthorpe Road which Frasers Livestock Transport purchased earlier this year for an undisclosed sum from BWC Developments.

A PUSH has emerged to build a new livestock saleyards in Warwick estimated to cost $15 million - along with a suggestion the existing saleyards be demolished. The inaugural meeting of the newly-formed Southern Downs Regional Council Saleyards Advisory Committee held in early December discussed the plan, with the committee in agreement that the current facility at the corner of McEvoy Street and Bracker Road is not large enough. The Saleyards Advisory Committee - which replaces the former
Saleyards Management Committee - is made up of deputy mayor Jo McNally, Cr Rod Kelly, Les Fraser of Frasers Livestock Transport, management committee chair Graham Kirkland, Andrew Williams of Elders and David McIvor of McDougall and Sons. The minutes of the meeting reveal Mr Fraser proposed to the committee “the demolition of the current facilities and rebuilding of the site as per the Forbes and Parkes saleyards (in NSW)”. Mr Fraser told the meeting there would be enough business in the area to support such a move and that the current saleyards are inadequate

Fiona’s world of artwork Casey’s tips
Fiona Hayes
Arts Scene with Sue Keong
Sue Keong interviews artist Fiona Hayes about her progress in the art world. When did you become interested in art? IT started in March 2015 when I stepped inside Art on King shop where Jill and Sue had their studio. They were offering art classes and I was interested in watercolour classes having never done art at all in my life but I had been making things (craft) all my life but art was a new beginning for me. It started there with Jill and Sue. I took a watercolour class because that was the medium I wanted to learn and I am interested in pen and ink, sketching, pen and wash. Did you have an interest in art as a child? NO, perhaps a little but it wasn’t something I was drawn too. (Laughter) No pun intended. After devoting my life and loving working with my husband, raising and supporting my two children chase their dreams. I feel I have been leading to this artistic time in my life. I found time for myself. Who or what influences are you watching in art? I follow different artists on Instagram and I read a lot of library books finding different styles that interest me and put my own slant on them. I chop and change a lot, I am bursting with ideas that I want to try and do in my own way. What are you currently doing in art? AT present it is my version of botanical art. Botanical art has many rules and regulations but I am enjoying my take on my interpretations by
drawing and painting seed pods, leaves, flowers from my garden. Recently I have been collecting and painting in watercolour and pen flowering Protea, Banksia Bottlebrush. I have completed a series of leaves, trees and flowers but I change when I have exhausted that idea I try other themes and I need to practice so I am always looking for the new and challenging. I am interested in buildings and I would like to conquer perspective. Rendering architecture artistically I feel needs to be just so whereas leaves, flowers trees you can be loose in your interpretation. With buildings I think it needs to be right. How do you get your art out there? I do put my art on Instagram and I have put together books, cards and drawings and watercolours and display them locally. I have done a few commissions which at first I was nervous about but I only hand it over if I am happy with the result and they have been too.
Where do you see yourself in a year? I still want to keep doing art that it is enjoyable not too seriously - as a business. I am feeling my way, exploring different areas and developing my style. I find I work best on my own if I am in a group situation all I do is talk, laugh and have a wonderful time but I don’t achieve much. I don’t want to be a hermit but I am most productive at home during the daylight hours and with the TV on in the background. I want to continue to push myself and I do enjoy entering my art in local shows and competitions. I have had some success with that so far, and it is a really nice accolade to either win a prize or sell my art to the public. I am very much encouraged and appreciate all those who give me compliments. I am, of course, always learning and open to helpful artistic criticism! I wish to continue with my Urban Sketching too (sketching on location), as this is something that needs to be worked on constantly to conquer the art of quick sketching of buildings and people.
An ‘in the moment’ chat with Clare Cotton savouring the atmosphere at the Seasonal Feast Southern Downs Market in Warwick Art Gallery courtyard. Clare reflected on the season, “It is more about contentment and gratitude in the moment”. As people rush by with bags of seasonal feast delicacies heading off to their next commitment we sit and take in the music, the light through the trees, good conversation and company. Christmas can mean the joy of sharing with family and friends ... but for many it is a quiet time of reflection - even solitude. The pressures build insidiously and the true spirit of Christmas is lost. Peace, Joy and Love, mused Clare.

Poll wild card push By Jeremy Sollars A MYSTERY independent candidate for Southern Downs at the next state election could see a potentially explosive result in the until now safe LNP seat. The Free Times has learned a local person of significant profile is considering running as an independent in the state poll and would allocate their preferences to One Nation. If true - and depending on the overall election result - the development could see Southern Downs go from being one of the safest LNP state electorates in Queensland to being considered marginal and therefore more likely to receive a greater share of State Government funding than has been the case in the past. Veteran Southern Downs MP Lawrence Springborg announced in early December he would not stand again in the seat and is tipped to have a run at the senate at the next federal election due in July 2019. As reported online this week in the Free Times, One Nation had expected to announce their candidate for Southern Downs last weekend, along with more than 30 others to contest mainly regional and rural seats for the party at the next state election. But their endorsed candidate - who a One Nation spokesman declined to name - withdrew at the last minute. The One Nation spokesman said the candidate had decided “now wasn’t the right time” and hinted whoever it was was more interested in running for the council in the future. He said One Nation expected to announce their new candidate “by the end of January”.

Pauline Hanson has tipped a February state election, but will her team be ready? Pauline Hanson has already lost one of her Queensland candidates announced last weekend, with Andy Semple, who was to stand for the Gold Coast seat of Currumbin, pulling out on Tuesday due to controversial comments on Twitter. The next state election is due in January 2018 but many are tipping an early poll, possibly as early as February next year, with both the LNP State Opposition and the minority Palaszczuk ALP government spooked over One Nation’s surge in popularity. Local political sources have told the Free Times the independent candidate is a strong possibility to run but would not divulge their identity at this stage. One Nation is expected to perform well in regional seats including long-term LNP strongholds like Southern Downs - and a strong vote here coupled with a flow of preferences from an independent could throw the
whole result locally right out into the open. One Nation leader Pauline Hanson predicted on ABC Radio this week Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk could call an election as early as February out of fear for her party’s growing support. “I think they’ll (Labor) be panicking about the support that One Nation is getting around the state,“ Ms Hanson told ABC radio on Monday when asked to explain her prediction of a February election announcement. The LNP has opened nominations for their Southern Downs candidate, which close on January 16. Sitting Southern Downs councillor Cameron Gow has been a strong tip, along with Goondiwindi councillor Rob McKenzie, with both current LNP members. The ALP and the Greens have said they will announce their candidates early in 2017. Our Say - Page 10
Bartley laughs off rumours RUMOURS have also been circulating ahead of the next state election that former Southern Downs Deputy Mayor Ross Bartley could be a contender, which he laughed off heartily when asked by the Free Times this week if he was keen for a tilt. The former long-standing local councillor runs a family property at Junabee east of Warwick and says he’s more than happy being back on the land full-time and had no interest in another political career. Mr Bartley - who turns 60 next year - said politics was “a young person’s game” and he was perfectly content these days to be back farming and pursuing his passion for clay target shooting. “Why would I do that?” he said when asked if he would run for state politics. “I am happy to be out of politics - it consumes your life. “Life isn’t a dress rehearsal - these days I get my work done through the week and go shooting on a Sunday, it’s perfect. “I’m shooting better scores than I ever have.”
mayor Tracy Dobie, an observer at the meeting, also said public-private partnerships needed to be considered. The minutes record that the EOI is to be further discussed at the next meeting of the Saleyards Advisory Committee to be held in late January or early February 2017. David McIvor was elected as chairperson of the committee in his absence from the December meeting, with Cr McNally as acting chairperson. The committee’s December discussions follow comments by Mr Keenan to the Free Times in October which hinted at “alternative management arrangements” for the
Warwick Saleyards. The Free Times asked Mr Keenan at that time if the council had any plans to privatise the saleyards, to which he replied that it was “unlikely that council would be able to sell the saleyards”. “Rather, the opportunity would be based around the medium-term management of the facility,” Mr Keenan said in October. “Consideration may be given to alternative management arrangements, but this would need to be endorsed by council and the incoming Saleyards Advisory Committee.” The current Warwick Saleyards only received national accreditation in May of this year, with in-
ternational accreditation still being sought. The Central West Livestock Exchange on the Newell Highway just outside Forbes in NSW - seen nationally as state of the art - opened in 2006 when a brand new $10.4m cattle auction facility was completed. A $15m sheep auction facility was opened in late 2010 and $1.2m pig auction facility completed the project in April 2012. Features include soft flooring, an automated drafting system, covered sales areas, feeding facilities in holding yards for special livestock sales, 24-hour surveillance, truck driver amenities and a six-bay high pressure truck wash.

NEWS Corporation has been given the green light to acquire Australian Regional Media (ARM) from APN News and Media following a review by Australia’s competition watchdog. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) launched its review in August, and shortly after published a ’statement of issues’ in October 2016 to gauge public response to the proposed acquisition. Earlier this month the ACCC announced it saw no major competition or media overlap issues with the planned $36.6 million sale of Australian Regional Media to Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation. ARM owns regional titles in Queensland including the Warwick Daily News, the Stanthorpe Border Post and the Toowoomba Chronicle. The final hurdle to the sale proceeding is a required approval by the Foreign Investment Review Board, which has declined to comment on the timeframe around its review of the sale, but it is understood it could make a decision by the end of this year or early in 2017. The ACCC’s approval follows News Corp’s purchase in mid-December of the Australian News Channel, which produces Sky News in Australia and New Zealand. It also comes as News Corp revealed plans last week to save $40 million in editorial costs by making more than 40 journalists, photographers and artists, redundant.

FED-UP Stanthorpe police have slammed the behaviour of individuals who vandalised the town’s council Christmas decorations over the weekend. Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland said that “again this year, a small group of mindless, intoxicated idiots, after leaving a nearby hotel, decided to destroy council Christmas decorations in the Stanthorpe CBD, the property no doubt funded by local taxpayers”. “The damage was observed by police in the early hours of Sunday morning, the fourmetre decorated Christmas tree near the Post Office in Maryland Street being totally destroyed. “Police perused CCTV footage that revealed two main offenders, a male and a female, climbing and destroying the tree while a group of four or five others, clearly visible and identifiable, were content to look on and not intervene, one of the males present taking pleasure capturing the event on his mobile phone. “Due to the tenacity and many hours of investigation by Stanthorpe Police, one male offender 19 years of age, was charged with wilful damage. “The female, 24, is expected to be charged by police and it is anticipated that others will also face the court once identified.” Sen Sgt Ireland said it had since come to the attention of police that the offender published an apology on social media, nominating intoxication as a contributing factor, only after exhaustive efforts by police in locating and charging him. “By law, voluntary intoxication is no excuse for any offence,” Sen Sgt Ireland said. “One has to wonder if any such apology would have been forthcoming if this person had not been located and charged.”

Saleyards committee says knock it down From front page IT is understood from the minutes that the council had already been considering calling for expressions of interest (EOI) from the private sector to take over management of the Warwick Saleyards, with the new ‘greenfield’ site proposed by Mr Fraser to now be included in the EOI. The minutes record that Mr Keenan told the committee “various companies had expressed interest in operations” prior to the inaugural committee meeting. Mr Keenan also advised that the Federal Government would be ‘the most likely source of possible funding” for a new saleyards but

State subsidy approved for council projects
Mayor Tracy Dobie, left, and Deputy Mayor Jo McNally. 163524
Pay rise for council By Jeremy Sollars SOUTHERN Downs Regional councillors last week voted in favour of accepting a two per cent pay rise at their December meeting in Warwick. The vote was taken during a confidential session of the meeting on Friday, 16 December, at which me-
dia were unable to be present. The pay rise was put forward for councillors across the State by the Queensland Government’s Local Government Remuneration and Discipline Tribunal. Councillors had the option of voting in favour of the increase - to take effect from 1 July 2017 -
or foregoing it and redirecting the funds elsewhere in the next council budget. Mayor Tracy Dobie said in a statement released after the meeting that council had accepted the tribunal’s decision, “but stressed that the two per cent remuneration increase is more than offset by council’s de-
cision not to claim travel expenses”. New pay scales for councillors from 1 July 2017: Mayor Tracy Dobie - $125,084 (up from $122,631). Deputy mayor Jo McNally $78,177 (up from $76,664). Councillors - $66,450 (up from $65,147).

TWO major council projects have been approved for State Government subsidies, according to a December council meeting announcement. An upgrade of Kenilworth Street in the Warwick industrial area costing $2.1m will receive a state subsidy of 40 per cent or $840,000. Along with private landowner contributions of $1m, the total cost to the council will be $260,000. A council spokeswoman said an “infrastructure agreement” was in place with the previous owners of the Axis Industrial Estate, with the estate including Grove Juice and APN Print. “Included in the infrastructure agreement was a contribution and commitment to the upgrading of Kenilworth Street to a standard that would accommodate road trains and b-doubles,” the spokeswoman said. “This obligation has passed on to the new owners of the Axis Industrial estate. “The contribution and commitment, along with council funds, have been fortunate enough to have attracted State Government grant funding which will facilitate employment and investment, around this upgrading of important infrastructure.” The Rogers Street car park in Stanthorpe will also get a $600,000 upgrade, with the state subsidising 60 per cent or $360,000. The council’s December minutes note that because the state subsidies for the two projects are conditional on the work being completed within 12 months of their approval - dated 28 November this year - other projects in the current council budget will need to be scrapped until a later budget. These cancelled projects include Reconstruction of Sycamore Street at Killarney Rehabilitation of Jack Smith Gully Road at Swan Creek Intersection improvements at Rangers Road/ Oxenham Street in Warwick Stormwater extension at Aldred/Miller streets in Warwick

Cut to lawyers By Jeremy Sollars
Politically correct for Christmas
The Year in Review function will be held tomorrow afternoon at the council’s Yangan Road Depot.
THE long-running controversy over the mowing of Stanthorpe’s McGlew Street sporting complex has boiled over into the legal arena, with the Stanthorpe Sports Association (SSA) engaging local solicitor Vince Catanzaro to take on the Southern Downs Regional Council. In what appears likely to be the first real test of the current councillors’ resolve, the SSA has threatened the council with court action if they refuse to carry out all the mowing at the McGlew Street complex, citing obligations under their council lease. The council has previously held firm to their current open space maintenance policy, which they say only requires them to mow council-owned lands “within 10 days of the grass reaching 100mm, 80 per cent of the time. But the SSA, through Mr Catanzaro, claims the most recent lease signed with the council - on 26 July this year - contains a clause requiring the council to undertake 100 per cent of the mowing and makes no mention of the open space policy, which has been in existence since 2012. The SSA further claims that the council wrote to them on 28 July - two days after both parties executed the new lease advising they would be reducing the council’s mowing activities in accordance with the open space policy. The SSA claims the lease condition overrides that later advice. A letter served on the council on 14 December by Mr Catanzaro states that commercial leases carry “an added responsibility on the Lessor (ie the council) to ensure the necessary terms are properly detailed prior to its execution and further must always be interpreted so as to avoid the Lease making ‘commercial nonsense’ or becoming a ‘commercial inconvenience”. The letter goes on to say that their cli-
THE Southern Downs Regional Council may be following the lead of many government bodies around the country by scrapping references to Christmas for its festive season events. A council spokeswoman confirmed council staff would not be treated to a Christmas party this year, but rather a 2016 ‘Year in Review’ function, to be held tomorrow, Friday 23 December. Government departments, schools and other public institutions around Australia have come under fire for deleting references to Christmas, opting for non-religious titles for end of year celebrations to avoid causing offence to nonChristians. One Brisbane primary school even changed the words to the carol ‘We wish you a merry Christmas’ to ‘We wish you a happy holiday’, part of what many see as political correctness taken to the extreme. While the council spokeswoman would not comment on the council’s policy on the religious significance of Christmas, she did say that “council’s staff Christmas party has been called the ‘Year in Review’ since 2015”. “It is a time for staff to get together to reflect on and celebrate both their and the organisation’s achievements over the year,” she said. “Council also conducts Recognition of Service Awards for staff as part of this celebration.”

Amanda Harrold and Colin Brittain of the Stanthorpe Sports Association. of its second-hand Hustler diesel mowers - which it says was worth $4500 - and use of labour from the Women In Custody program, both of which the SSA refused. The council likewise refused a demand from the SSA for $25,000 to purchase their own mowing equipment. In a statement released this week a spokeswoman said the council was “disappointed with the receipt of the legal correspondence, especially given the offers and options that have been provided to the Association”. “As a result of the legal correspondence received from the Association, council will have no alternative option but to engage legal representation at ratepayers’ expense. “Council is disappointed that what appeared to be negotiations being undertaken in good faith has progressed into a legal matter.” Have your say on the Free Times Facebook page ...

The issue has been controversial in both Stanthorpe and in Warwick, as Warwick’s sporting clubs undertake their own mowing at their own cost and with their own resources, more often than not using their own volunteer labour. The SSA have previously stated that prior to the amalgamation of the Warwick and Stanthorpe councils the former Stanthorpe shire had maintained the McGlew Street fields for some 60 years. Council has previously stated their view is that the lease conditions did not state any “specific level of maintenance” but has not clarified to the Free Times why the most recent lease was not altered in line with the open space policy. In recent months since the saga unfolded the council has offered the SSA one
THE council will consider funding in next year’s budget to upgrade the gravel section of Junabee Road east of Warwick to bitumen, a project which has been called for many times over the past decade. Councillors at the December meeting received joint letters from around 50 residents and road-users asking for an “urgent upgrade” of the gravel section - which runs from Pettigrews Crossing Road through to the Yangan-Killarney Road in the current financial year. The residents, mainly from the Junabee, Tannymorel, Danderoo and Emu Vale districts raised their concerns about “the state and level of degradation of more than two kilometres of the existing gravel and dirt section of Junabee Road”. The concerns include erosion, driver safety “due to increase in corrugation and slippery condition caused by rain” and the gravel road base either side of the Luck’s crossing culvert having washed away. Councillors were advised by council officers that the upgrade had previously been investigated and resolved to consider the funding next financial year, in the 2017-2018 budget, saying it was one of a number of competing priorities in the capital works area.

THE Southern Downs Rifle Club operates from its range in Connolly Dam Road, Risdon. The range was built in 1942 by American troops stationed in the district and used as a training ground and until recently the original target hoists were still in use. On Sunday 18 December, before the regular shoot, a special vote of thanks was given to David Norman, the current president, who has worked tirelessly to give the club five new target hoists and frames. In a tremendous endeavour he designed the hoists, arranged and collected all the materials required, manufactured and installed the five target hoists and frames with minimal outside assistance. He has done all of this gaining no recompense for his labours and contributing many of the incidental costs. The club had applied for a grant but was unsuccessful and under the circumstances - Dave is 85 years old - they decided to go ahead anyway. A sign was made up by Signs R Us, who incidentally donated it free of charge, acknowledging the work and it will be permanently fixed at the butts as a constant reminder of what the club owes Dave. Afterwards, the shoot pro-

Big thumbs down
A wonderful world
AS a long-time volunteer for the Christmas gift wrapping service that Blue Care provides in the Rose City Centre each year, I would like to give a great big thumbs down to the position that centre management have given them this year. I realise space in the centre is limited due to renovations but the position at the base of the escalators is nothing short of disastrous. This is a local charity and service provider, with 100 per cent of funds raised used to provide services in the local Warwick community. Centre management ... where is your community spirit? Beatrice Hawkins, Warwick.
THOSE of us who wonder what the world is coming to might like to share a story of the season of Christmas. Recently Allora had a hailstorm of wonder. Our Christmas looked to have come early as it was as white as snow out there. Two petunia plants were stripped bare and a more forlorn sight one would scarcely see. Weeks on and wonder of wonders repairs are complete, and two petunia plants are fully repaired and again in full bloom. To the readers and staff of the Southern Free Times, this writer wishes the joy of Christmas to be in full bloom for all. It is a wonderful world if one takes the time to see the real story of Christmas as this writer does. Melba Morris, Allora.

Passion for One Nation, full of fear printed word By Jeremy Sollars
By Jeremy Sollars THE Free Times was pleased to welcome Warwick’s Jazmine Dillon for work experience during November and December. Jazmine has a passion for the printed word and her placement with the Free Times was negotiated with Grace Smith of the Southern Downs Industry Education Association (SDIEA). Jazmine has spent the last four Fridays with us assisting with a variety of tasks and generally gaining some insight into
/mth
how a local newspaper is put together, from both an editorial and an advertising perspective. In 2017 Jazmine will undertake TAFE study but says she hasn’t quite decided which course path to take. “I have a few options with IT and trades - but what I’d really like to do is work in a library,” she said. “Work experience is just a really good thing to be able to put on your resume.” Our thanks to Jazmine and
the SDIEA for their interest and we wish Jazmine all the best for the future. Employers seeking to take on a young person can take advantage of new State Government funding under the Back To Work package for Queensland’s regions, which includes a ‘Youth Boost Payment’ of up to $20,000 for employees aged between 15 and 24. For more information visit www.backtowork.initiatives. qld.gov.au
ONE Nation has the major parties well and truly spooked in Queensland - and federally and it’s no surprise why. People are sick of career politicians and clearly want different voting options. One thing you have to acknowledge about Pauline Hanson is her consistency - in politics they would say she “stays on message”. That said, if One Nation repeats its Queensland election performance from 1998 - where they ended up with 11 MPs and 22 per cent of the vote - or betters it, the question will be can they avoid the dreadful infighting that followed back then and led to the party’s self-implosion
in the Sunny State. You would hope Pauline Hanson and her advisers have vetted One Nation’s candidates better this time around, but the recent episode with Senator Rod Culleton quitting the party doesn’t fill me with confidence. From a media perspective I’ve found it quite difficult over the past couple of weeks to pin them down as to what is being announced and when with respect to their Southern Downs candidate, who ended up withdrawing at the last minute anyway. I was directed between Hanson’s chief of staff and her media adviser and ultimately the Queensland state director, none of whom seemed to have much
of an idea when anything was being announced. One Nation media events elsewhere have seen times changed with little warning, which makes for very cranky reporters. As well as the need to pick the right candidates, you get the sense that while Hanson’s appeal is that she’s an ‘anti-politician’, her party - while probably happy to be seen as a bit rough around the edges - as an outfit needs to lift its level of professionalism. Otherwise many, including myself, will be forced to question the quality of Hanson’s overall judgement. The choices she’s made in the past over who to surround herself with haven’t always been good ones.

CHRISTMAS is blooming and Free Times gardening columnist BEATRICE HAWKINS has captured the colours of the season... CHRISTMAS is coming ... three more sleeps after you have read this. I trust that you all enjoy a safe, happy and blessed Christmas holiday period. If you have any last-minute presents to be wrapped be sure to remember the “Blue Care” wrapping service located this year a little out of the way at the bottom of the escalators in the Rose City Centre. This is their major fund-raiser for the year and we all appreciate the wonderful service they provide. Another beautiful flower at this time of year is the “Star of Bethlehem” agapanthus lily, a real star of the season growing almost anywhere except where the weather is extremely hot or cold. Surviving on very little water when established they are a truly versatile plant and look wonderful in massed plantings. They are used to good effect in roundabouts in many areas and always look great planted down country driveways. In some areas they are classed as an environmental weed as they spread by seed and grow so easily while in other areas they are used as a fire retardant plant because of their fleshy green leaves and also for holding banks and stopping
Many of the new varieties, such as the deep purple “Black Pantha”, have sterile seed and can only be propagated by division so cause no weed problems. They are available in a large range of sizes from dainty little miniatures suitable for garden edges to two-metre high giants to put at the back of borders and in a range of colours from the usual bright blue to white, bi-colours and now in deep purple/black and mauve pinks. While they seem to thrive on neglect, a feed of organic fertiliser in early spring will help the developing flowers and dividing the clumps every four or five years will keep the plants healthy and producing a wonderful display. I have some of the common blue and white plants growing but aspire to obtain some “Black Pantha” for inclusion in my garden next year. These great plants are native to South Africa but have been successfully introduced to many countries and absolutely thrive in Australia. Some more garden trivia for this week’s column. There are over 20,000 species of edible plants in the world but 90 per cent of human food is supplied by only 20 species. Peaches, pears, apricots, quinces, strawberries and apples are all members of the rose family. From a botanical standpoint pumpkins and tomatoes, cucumbers and zuchinni are fruits not vegetables while rhubarb is a vegetable. Tomatoes are the world’s most popular fruit with over 60,000,000 tonnes grown each year. There are at least 10,000 varieties of tomatoes. Bananas are the second most popular fruit in the world. Pineapples are the only edible member of the Bromeliad family and are actually a berry. A herb is made from the leaf of a plant while a spice is from the seed, bark, root, berry or bulb. Vanilla “beans” are actually the pod of an orchid, Vanilla planifollia, and are more closely related to corn than to green beans. Don’t neglect to water your plants over the holiday period. A good thorough deep soaking will allow you a respite for a few days and a good layer of mulch is also a good investment.

erosion with their large and tangled root system. Most of the environmental problems with feral plants have developed from illegal and careless dumping by irresponsible people. If you have any garden debris to be disposed of, please be sure to take it to the local tip and don’t just leave it in the bush or by the roadside.

Casey’s tips
The year that was in pictures ANOTHER year’s over, so join with us as we take a look back at the highlights, through the lens of our photographer Terry West who spent a lot of time out and about capturing the people and events that happened across the Southern Downs.

April saw our new mayor, Tracy Dobie being sworn in.
In August the mayor became one of the fastest mayors in Australia, jumping on board a superbike behind former champion Troy Bayliss.
Cracker night in June and the skies lit up in Tenterfield.
March had Apple and Grape with Mayor Peter Blundell, Channel 7’s Liz Cantor and Livio Regano and Rebel FM’s Jake Chapman.
July and it was Jumpers and Jazz in July in Warwick with Tony and Halina Green and Barry and Susan from the Gold Coast having fun at the Gallery Markets.
Christmas weather TERRY WEST gives us his predictions for Christmas Day weather. A HIGH off the Northern NSW Coast and an upper low in the Southern Coral Sea are likely to for a strong ridge along the South-east Qld coast and push a strong flow of moisture into the Southern Downs and Granite belt. This is likely to generate showers from early morning and may result in a traditional Christmas afternoon storm. Showers are likely to be patchy and should not interrupt any festivities until late afternoon. Winds should be moderate from the east throughout the day with some stronger gusts expected. It looks to be a reasonable temperature over Christmas with an overnight low of around 13c followed by a high of 28 during the day. It should be partly cloudy from early morning and may become overcast during the afternoon. Summary Patchy showers until mid-afternoon with a storm developing. Winds moderate but may gust at times. Some cloud during the morning, becoming overcast by evening. Temperatures 13 to 28 degrees.
May saw cyclists and many other types of vintage vehicles at Allora for Heritage Week.
September Queens Park, Park Road Weir closed to traffic during minor flooding.
October saw the New Rodeo Queen with 2016 runner-up Nichole Evens, 2016 Queen Ashleigh Grant and 2015 Queen Georgie Stower with Lawrence Springborg.
In January the Keogh Family were proud to receive their Citizenship papers at Warwick on Australia Day.

Concrete bridge for safety LOCALS, tourists and emergency services now have safer access on a vital road following the completion of works on a new bridge over Bookookoorara Creek. Deputy Prime Minister and Federal Member for New England Barnaby Joyce on Monday, 18 December, officially opened the $1 million bridge, about 34 kilometres north of Tenterfield. Mr Joyce said the new two-lane, concrete bridge replaced a single-lane timber bridge built more than 70 years ago. “It’s part of the upgrade of the Legume-Woodenbong section of the Mount Lindesay road, one of the most contentious roads in Australia, that we promised to fix and are now fixing," Mr Joyce said. “It’s a strategic transport link of the Darling Downs. This bridge is an important milestone in fixing this road, which had previously been a State Highway, and presented serious safety concerns to the many vehicles which use the route each day including school buses and semi-trailers which must divert onto the unsealed shoulders of the road when passing each other with little room to spare. “Built higher over the creek than the original bridge, the new structure
represents a major improvement on Mt Lindesay Road, particularly for emergency services vehicles trying to access the area during bushfires and other natural disasters.
“The project employed local contractors and suppliers where possible. It is important to ensure that local businesses benefit from projects like this one both financially and as a way of
developing skills and expertise.” New South Wales Member for Lismore Thomas George said the bridge was built under the New South Wales
Government’s Country Bridge Solutions programme, which delivers cost savings by using standardised prefabricated bridge components and existing council resources to replace bridges.

Local Sport Casey’s tips
Connecting people with the sport they love.
Bolt steals 2016 show The
spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com
I IMAGINE that most households are now on serious Santa countdown with only a few more sleeps until that man in the red suit swings by with a sack full of surprises and as this is the final Spin for the Year, it is time to take a glance back at the year that was. The highs the lows and the sheer surprises. And to be fair there have been plenty of those. In fact 2016 will go down as the year of the drought breaking underdog - the year of the left field surprise. Before taking a look back at some of the special 2016 moments, it is time to say thank you to our readers and to those people who regularly contribute information about their chosen sport each week. A special thank you to Tania and our editorial staff who are so accommodating of last minute changes given the strict deadlines. Terry who you can count on to get that special sporting shot when you need it and of course thanks to my partner in Spin. I hope everyone has a happy and safe Christmas, and I am sure you will all be making an appearance on Santa’s “nice list” and find there is a special something under the Christmas tree for you. Of course in a traditional Boxing Day style, I will be front and centre relaxing after the excesses and stresses of Christmas Day with cold ale in hand and taking in all of the action of the Boxing Day Test. Whatever you have planned enjoy. - Casey 2016 - The Year in Review LOOKING back on 2016 one of my biggest highlights of the year does not fall into the category of surprises. It was the sensational performance of Usain Bolt at the Rio Olympics. As I watched the breathtaking performances of this stunning athlete, I got a sense that I was witnessing a very special moment in sport something akin to a Mohammed Ali moment, a Bradmanesque-like performance or a Black Caviar record, and I doubt I will have the privilege of seeing such a dominant performance by an athlete again. Of course, the win of Leicester in the premier league set the ball rolling in the upset stakes. Who wouldn’t have loved a piece of those &5000/1 odds. But then who will forget the amazing performance of the Western Bulldogs to come from an improbable seventh position on the ladder to take the AFL flag. Not to be outdone, the Sharks turned the porch lights off in the shire when they snagged their maiden NRL premiership. On the world stage, one of the most memorable moments must surely have been the efforts of the Icelandic football team, who against the odds, made it to the Euro 2016 finals and gave sports lovers all over the world not just a David and Goliath moment but the Viking clap which has surely taken over from the Mexican Wave which is now “so yesterday”. As is often the way we sadly said goodbye to some of the true greats of our time. Mohammed Ali - the man who floated like a butterfly and stung like a bee. Mr Golf himself Arnold Palmer and closer to home “Ave a good weekend Mr Walker” - Max “Tangles” Walker. JANUARY THE year opened in a relatively ho-hum fashion. There was of course plenty of hype around the Australian Tennis Open as Lleyton Hewitt called time on a great career and the infamous “ComeOn” cry was mothballed. Unfortunately, there was no fairy-tale exit for Hewitt. Hewitt took on the role of Australian Davis Cup captain - “Good luck with that” was what most of us were thinking as Tomic and Kyrios became Hewitt’s problem children. On the local scene Australia Day events took centre stage as Warwick hosted the ever popular Australia Day cricket carnival. Stunned Mullets
Two hundred riders converged on Warwick as stage two of the Brisbane Camperland Queensland Road Team Series (QRTS) rolled into town giving Warwick a little taste of their own Tour de France. took the prize as the overall carnival winners while Lachlan Gross was named Player of the Carnival. Stan Gilchrist, father of Aussie wicket keeping legend Adam Gilchrist was the special guest at the Woodenbong Australia Day cricket festivities - another financial success for local charities. In Stanthorpe the annual Super 8’s competition was hailed much fun and a success by organisers and over 100 competitors lined up in the Stanthorpe Australia Day Triathlon. FEBRUARY ALMOST like clockwork with the impending Rugby League season looming large came another instance of bad behaviour from an NRL player, and while fans were left to wonder “why” Mitchell Pearce was left to suffer the significant consequences of his own stupidity. Rugby League got through the Auckland Nines without any major behaviour issues. The NRL used the series as an opportunity to trial a few left field rule changes that had some players, commentators and certainly spectators a tad confused. Gloveman extraordinaire Wally Grout and the one and only Thommo were inducted into Cricket’s Hall of Fame. It will be some time before there is an acceptance speech as honest, hilarious and politically incorrect as Thommo’s. Allman Park kicked off their 2016 racing season. Local trainer Mick Hemmings got 2016 off to a winning start for local connections. On the cricket scene, both Stanthorpe and Warwick were battling testing weather conditions. Maryvale Condamine and Stanthorpe RSL both looked grand final bound as the close of the local cricket seasons drew closer. A group of emerging Origin players blotted their copy book - “too cool for school and rules”. Their behavior breaking a curfew coach Kev Walters set for an emerging Origin players camp cost them any chance of playing Origin in 2016 as the coach reminded everyone who was in charge. On a sad note, Tenterfield Tigers players, officials and supporters farewelled club patron 95-year-old Aub Gillespie a champion of the club and a champion bloke. In a contentious move, the Poms got their man, naming Wayne Bennett their new international coach. The appointment raised plenty of eyebrows. MARCH THERE were upsets in the finals of the Stanthorpe and Warwick cricket fixtures with the favoured sides in both centres beaten. Wheatvale defeated Maryvale Condamine in Warwick, and in Stanthorpe, Valleys toppled RSL. Colts were the Warwick Reserve Grade premiers. Jordan Lanza was the big winner at the Stanthorpe Cricket Association presentation evening after a stellar season and was named Junior (Colt) Player of the Year and also Stanthorpe Player of the Year. In Warwick, Lachlan Cross was named Player of the Final
Casey has his hat signed by two legends, West Indian great Sir Garfield Sobers one of the all time great test cricketers and Alan Davidson, great Australian all rounder.
Casey catches up with cricketing greats.
The BRL football season was on the horizon, and after a stellar season in 2015 the Stanthorpe Gremlins were faced with the reality that they would not be able to field a stand-alone A Grade side in 2016. Work began in earnest to broker a deal with Texas to field a combined Stanthorpe Texas side. The TRL season kicked off with Warwick showing good early signs. As the NRL season got underway, Melbourne Storm’s Billy Slater succumbed to his recurring shoulder injury and his season was over almost before it started. March also saw the Queensland Rugby Union sack coach Richard Graham after the Reds disappointing season. APRIL WARWICK stamped its place as the hub for equine events. A successful Polocrosse carnival was followed by a weekend of eventing. More than 200 riders and their horses flocked to Morgan Park for the Inglewood Quarries One Day event. The first in a series of events held by the Warwick Horse Trials club throughout the year. The experienced Matt Gaske who along with his brother Ross have a big team in work at Kalbar came to Warwick with a team of three horses and was successful with Kolora Stud Triple 8. The Warwick Cowboys were making opponents sit up and taking notice with some impressive early season performances. The Border Bushrangers A grade rep side travelled to Miles for the annual South West Country trials. Coach Matt Gainey was disappointed when only 15 players made the trip. Jarrod McIntosh earned himself a spot in the South West Country side, and was joined by Stanthorpe players Gary Skimmings and Nathan Brannigan who earned a run in the South West under-20s side after a strong performance. The Border Bushrangers under-18 side took their place in the TRL competition, but was finding the going tough. The Stanthorpe Mallet players held a successful come and try game and attracted a number of
new players to their sport. Peter Moody called time on his training career after his long battle with the VR Integrity Unit over the Cobalt fiasco. A road trip north saw him turn up on the front lawn at Raheen Stud wrapped up like a large chrysalis in his swag. It surprised the Nolan clan and proves you can take the boy out of the bush but not the bush out of the boy. MAY NRL tipsters were doing it tough as upsets continued in the National league. Many tipsters this early in the season were resorting to a blind fold and pin. As the focus of League lovers began to turn to State of Origin, the Kangaroos and Kiwis played an uninspiring Test. The NSW City Country Origin trial again had many questioning the merit of this game, but the rep round with Pacific Island countries and PNG playing was certainly more entertaining. The combined Stanthorpe Texas side recorded their first win in the BRL competition. Racing throws up some diamonds and some bricks and while Michelle Payne’s win in the 2015 Melbourne Cup was certainly a diamond a seemingly innocuous fall at Mildura threw what turned out to be a brick at the feisty jockey. Payne was airlifted to Melbourne with a very serious tear to her spleen. The injury had many doubting if she would return to the saddle and saw her sidelined until late October. At attempt number three, Toowoomba teenager Alyssa Azar realised her dream and became the youngest Australian to scale Mt Everest. In Wallangarra members of the Hodgson family travelled from as far as Orange, NSW, Gladstone, the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane to play in the single stableford competition for the unique but much sought after Frank Hodgson Memorial Trophy. Blues supporters finally had something to cheer about after taking out the opening State of Origin game. Underway to host the Queensland State under 10-12 year Football/ Soccer Championships.

Over 200 cyclists converged on Warwick last week as stage two of the Brisbane Camperland Queensland Road Team Series (QRTS) rolled into town, giving Warwick a little taste of their own Tour de France. Promising young Stanthorpe golfer Hannah Reeves scored a rare albatross on the par five ninth hole in Stanthorpe during a Saturday competition and backed up to win the popular Sunday Sporters competition. A young lady who looks to have a big future in the game. Mid way through the TRL season and the message was pretty clear from the Warwick Cowboys “We are gunning for the 2016 premiership” AUGUST AFTER all of the negative publicity, Rio and the Olympics grabbed our attention. Allora’s Michel Denny took his place in the Australian track and field competition competing in the discus event. As the youngest competitor in the field he should be justifiably proud of his efforts. While the medals did not flow as anticipated in the pool, Charlotte Caslick became a household name as she and the Pearls won the first gold medal in Women’s 7s Rugby Union. While the efforts of Chloe Esposito gave us all a lesson in the sport of modern pentathlon. Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps and Anna Meares all stole our hearts for one reason or another. On a personal level, I completed yet another Wanderers tour and while umpiring all games got to see some of the cricketing talent in the country areas. Warwick’s Carter Bilbrough and Dave Walker were also tourists or terrorists depending on your point of view and impressed. SEPTEMBER SEPTEMBER tis the season of footy finals. The Inglewood Roosters wrapped up a successful return to the BRL when they scored an overwhelming win in the 2016 premiership match against Tenterfield. Tenterfield had more success in the Ladies League tag competition where the Tigerettes took out their third consecutive grand final win - again going through the season undefeated. The Inglewood Sporting Shooters Association successfully hosted the Queensland State Lever Action Championships giving everyone a taste of excellent country hospitality. The Stanthorpe Football Association grand finals could not have been played in worse conditions, but it did not deter a big crowd from attending. Honours went to Ballandean who took out the Men’s and Ladies Titles. Also had a win while City won the Junior Colts while Inter won the Fillies and Senior Colts. In a thrilling TRL grand final, the Warwick Cowboys were edged out by the Pittsworth Danes and while they did not take home the main prize the Warwick players and supporters should be congratulated on a great effort. On the NRL scene things were getting to the interesting stage and the Cowboys and Broncos met a replay of the 2015 Grand final. There was to be no sweet revenge for the Broncos as the

Providing the green will be ready the next Turkey Triples will be on 11 January. A huge thank you to everyone who have helped out with the green renovations and also to those who have prepared inside the club house for the new carpet. I would also like to thank the Free Times for the opportunity to have our bowls notes printed every week which is a great service to the sporting public. To sign off for the year, I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year. See you on the green in 2017.
Cowboys and JT asserted their authority. Meanwhile, the Sharks and Melbourne Storm were well on their way to a GF appearance. OCTOBER THE Western Bulldogs proved fairy tales do come true when they overcame the more- fancied Sydney Swans at the MCG to win the 2016 flag a mere 62 years after winning their first and only premiership. The MCG cauldron was a Dogs paradise and no place for a feint hearted Swan. Dogs coach Luke Beveridge had everyone grabbing for a tissue when he presented his winning medallion to the club’s inspirational captain Bob Murphy. Beveridge provided the Cinderella glass slipper moment in this fairy-tale when he called Murphy to the podium and handed over his medallion. The AFL GF set the stage for the footy gods to deliver another magic moment in the NRL grand final and for once they obliged. Porch lights across the shire have finally been extinguished after the Sharks claimed their first premiership in the club’s 50-year history. (No word yet on any sightings of Harold Holt however). The win had fans, club legends and players including their skipper in tears while Storm skipper and Australian captain Cam Smith reinforced his position as one of the nicest in the game almost stealing the show with an outstanding show of sportsmanship in his postgame speech. No ugly stepsister on display here more Prince Charming. Unsung hero Luke Lewis was a popular winner of the Clive Churchill medal. As the book closed on the football seasons, even Tania and resident Sharks fans had plenty to smile about, thanks to a small wager on her beloved Sharks at the start of the season. A total of 700 orienteering enthusiasts from across Australia and other well credentialed internationals from China the UK the Czech Republic and Denmark took over the forests on the outskirts of Stanthorpe for the Australian National Orienteering titles. The tricky course provided plenty of challenges for the competitors who were full of praise for the courses and the location. Warwick and Stanthorpe both held successful annual racing carnivals showcasing the best of country racing. As October drew to a close it was time for punters to sharpen their pencils and pins, The Melbourne Spring Carnival served up a delightful entre to the Melbourne Cup with the sensational win of Jameka in the Caulfield Cup. Winx meanwhile blitzed the Cox Plate field and
stole the hearts and imagination of seasoned punters and sometime racing enthusiasts NOVEMBER THE Melbourne Cup is front and centre of most people’s minds and imaginations on that famous first Tuesday in November. Another chapter was written into the Aussie Melbourne Cup folklore. Lloyd Williams resplendent in top hat picked up a record fifth win in the Cup with Almandin, becoming the most successful owner in the history of the great race. The cricket season in both Stanthorpe and Warwick got underway. A dispute between the SDRC and Stanthorpe Cricket Association threatened to derail the season in Stanthorpe but players eventually got on the pitches. Stanthorpe golfers played for the sought after Medal of Medallists and the Roy Carnell Memorial trophy. Graham Tonkin continued his red hot form ensuring his name is added to the Shield. In a close contest was Fiona Kelly who won the Ladies event. Rose City Boxing Club’s Jacko McMahon and Jake Wyllie capped off an outstanding year by winning two State titles in a performance their head trainer Damien Lawler described as “awesome“. In a disappointing performance, the Aussie cricketers suffered sensational defeats at the hands of the South African side. The losses ultimately led to chairman of selectors Rod Marsh standing down from his position and one of the biggest shake-ups in the Aussie cricket side for years. The day night Test in Adelaide proved a winner in more ways than one as the new look side grabbed a win against the South Africans and won back the hearts of the Australian fans. DECEMBER THE day night Tests caught the imagination of the public and proved to be a bonanza for Cricket Australia and the public at the Gabba. It was one of the highlights of my year. This past week I have had the privilege of meeting two of my cricketing heroes Allan Davidson and the charismatic Sir Garfield Sobers. To add to my excitement I spent almost an hour before play last Saturday chewing the fat on all things cricket with the indomitable Kerry O’Keefe. And, of course, the cricket hasn’t been half bad either. Santa definitely came early for me. And so that is a wrap for Spin in 2016. I hope you, our readers have a wonderful Christmas and that the New Year brings health and happiness. Casey

JUNE STANTHORPE Gremlins under-16 player Matt Murphy was selected in the Central Crows side to play in the Queensland under-16 trials in Toowoomba on 30 June. The Stanthorpe Gateballers hosted a group from the Toowoomba Mallet Sports Club last Friday. The Toowoomba club has been playing gateball for many years and the visit boosting playing numbers as they competed in a successful round robin competition. The Border Bushrangers under-18 side notched up a win over Highfields and in the BRL the Tenterfield Tigers and Inglewood Roosters were sitting at the top of the table. Basil Nolan’s Raheen stud was one of the top purchasers at a mammoth nine days of selling at the Magic Millions National Sales. On the opening day of the sale, Nolan purchased a filly by Snitzel for $220,000 after it initially was passed in at $210,000. The filly was the top-priced yearling on the first day of the sale. The passes were flatter the tries more spectacular and the tackles tougher or so they said when players from Toowoomba, Ipswich and Brisbane came together last weekend to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the 1966 Bulimba Cup competition. Among those celebrating was Stanthorpe’s John Scott. Top BRL referee Bernie Pramberg once again had the whistle acting as MC for the event. Peter Betros, QRL chairman and himself a former first class referee made presentations to the players. Much to the horror of Maroons supporters, the Blues landed a killer blow winning Origin Two. After a series of thrilling games at the Outback Rugby League Carnival in Miles last weekend, South-West Country claimed the Outback crown for the further year in succession. South West had wins over Central West and Mt Isa and impressed the selectors who were on hand to choose the Outback Queensland Team. JULY THE arrival of July heralded only one thing and that was Wimbledon and tennis tragics spent the next few weeks sleep deprived. Andy Murray went on to win the Men’s Singles and Serena Williams added another Wimbledon Singles and doubles title to her impressive record. In the NRL, the marriage between Keiran Foran and the Eels went into melt down as things went from bad to worse for the embattled Eels. An expensive exercise that did not work for either party. In an Australian first, the Clifton Jockey club hosted Australia’s inaugural standalone Arabian horse race meeting. The event was a combination of colour and excitement with impressive horses, a market day, a Middle Eastern theme and some serious gallopers. The Queenslanders bounced back in the State of Origin denying Gallen’s men a clean sweep and restoring some Maroon pride. Gallen won no friends when he and his players snubbed a very gracious Cameron Smith during the presentations.
Warwick Cricketer Lachlan Gross had a successful season and was named Player of the Final in Wheatvale’s win over Maryvale Condamine.
