Visiting GPs ‘set to slash service’ The loss of the Medicare rebate for in-home doctors could leave about 15,000 people in the Geelong region worse off, according to a national provider. National Home Doctor Service chief medical officer, Doctor Umberto Russo, said potential cuts would affect the elderly and children most severely. “Doctor home visits are an essential Medicare service vital for the most vulnerable people in our community.” In the last financial year 15,226 people used the service in the electorates of Corio (9419) and Corangamite (5807). One third of these were under 15 years old, while almost another third of these were over 65. “In the federal electorate of Corangamite, one in four home visit patients were children under 15, and almost half of patients were adults aged over 64 years,” Dr Russo said. “Children and elderly family members can fall sick at any time of the day or night - not just in business hours when GP clinics are open.”
A decade ago then Prime Minister John Howard introduced afterhours doctor home visits to Medicare. But according Dr Russo, the service has come under threat with calls for the Medicare rebate to be removed in the government’s Medicare Benefit Schedule (MBS) review. “If home visits weren’t available more families would go to emergency departments for health problems that are not emergencies but cannot wait for treatment until business hours,” he said. “For regional communities ... getting health services when you need it is hard enough, but any cuts to this service will make things even harder.“ Dr Russo said an average home visit cost the government $128. He compared this to $368 on average for an emergency department visit. A report by Deloitte Access Economics found a lack access to after-hours doctor home would cost the health system $724m over four years, he said. Continued page 5

State unveils $53 million Great Ocean Road fix-up The State Government has announced $53 million for the Great Ocean Road, after landslides plagued the route over the past few months. Premier Daniel Andrews and Roads Minister Luke Donnellan made the announcement at Wye River almost a year after fires devastated the area during Christmas. “It’s just not good enough to lock out tourists and locals every time there’s an extreme weather event,” Mr Andrews said. “We’re doing the work to make sure this beautiful part of our state is always open for business.” The announcement comes after heavy rain caused hundreds of landslides on the road during September, forcing closures up until this week. Federal Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson has called on the state to match a Commonwealth investment of $25m since August. The Commonwealth investment was on top of a joint $50m investment from the federal and state governments, which began in 2012. On 18 November Mr Donnellan’s office told the Indy that the State Government would match the new funding, and this latest amount was further funding, his office confirmed. The investment will fund urgent repairs on the iconic 240km road, including new rock fall netting,
retaining walls and armour stone to prevent wave erosion. Mr Donnellan said the funding would safeguard the national heritage-listed icon and residents and business owners who depend on the road for their livelihoods. “It will also ensure communities along the Great Ocean Road remain connected during an emergency such as a bushfire or flood,” he said. He said the investment would improve the surface of the road and reduce the risk it would be closed in the future due to landslides. The government will also install traffic management technology - including electronic signs, CCTV monitoring devices and real-time traffic counters to help tourists and residents in an emergency. This week work concluded on the State Government’s $2m concrete wall to stabilise the embankment between Wye River and Separation Creek. The project will allow VicRoads two open lanes to be opened to traffic today after three months of closure, Mr Donnellan said. “We’ve been working hard to keep it open and accessible to tourists and the local community.“ “We will keep working to support local residents, communities and businesses right along the Great Ocean Road as they continue the recovery process.”

NEWS
Fresh from last week’s research linking booze with family violence (surprise, surprise), Deakin University was at it again this week with more helpful insights. Except Dr Paige van der Plight’s recommendations for Christmas lunch were actually useful too, with good ideas for watching the waistline while enjoying the festivities. The good doctor offered all sorts of ideas, like baking vegies with olive oil rather than butter, preparing desserts with plenty of fresh fruit, and mixing spirits with mineral water instead of soft drinks. But Dr van der Plight lost Double Take at suggestion number eight: “Going easy on the pork crackling”. “It might taste great,” she advised, “but it’s essentially just fat.” What? No crackling at Christmas? Outrageous! All we can say, doctor, is fat chance! Pork-fat chance, that is. The Indy’s noted this before but it has to be asked again: does Geelong have the dumbest crooks? Judging by the fact they can’t help themselves even in front of security cameras, the answer just has to be yes. More evidence was supplied this week on Gee-
long police’s Facebook page, with yet another haul of alleged offenders caught on candid camera. This week’s suspects were allegedly bagging booze - again - and groceries, stupidly right under the gaze of in-store surveillance. Police posted images of people carefully described as individuals who would have “important information” on the related alleged thefts. Retailers must be asking themselves what more they can do to prevent thefts - ask for in-theft selfies? State Member for Lara John Eren was a welcome picture of good health last Friday as he mingled with family among a throng of pre-Christmas revellers at City Quarter, atop Cunningham Pier. Mr Eren had only recently returned from work after a near-fatal heart attack some months earlier. Luckily, timely treatment and the application of a stent eventually put our man safely back on his feet. Mr Eren, and quite clearly his family present, were understandably relieved he was given the chance to end another year with loved ones. Which made Double Take think: for Christmas we like presents, but what really matters is presence.

Two men kicked down the front door of a Norlane home in a violent home invasion Sunday, putting a 50-year-old woman in hospital. Detective Senior Sergeant Glenn Schumann said the woman was asleep at 2.20am Sunday when the men broke into the Alkira Avenue house and assaulted her. The attack left her with a laceration to the head and bruising and swelling to the face, he said. Det Sen Sgt Schumann said the men appeared to have made no attempt to conceal their identity.
“It doesn’t appear they had any disguises.” He said the pair ransacked the house after the attack and that the woman may know one of the attackers. He said detectives were investigating a number of possible motivations behind the assault. The woman received treatment for her injuries at Geelong Hospital. Police urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.

New app’s ‘for the birds’
Visiting GPs ‘set to slash service’
By Luke Voogt
“Home visits help families when they need it most and keep emergency departments for emergencies, saving the health system money.” But Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson said medical experts involved in the Federal Government review were concerned some doctors might be billing routine home visits as urgent to get a higher fee. Statistics showed the number of after-hours services (home visits) had more than doubled in the past five years, she said. Medical experts have been assessing all 5700 MBS items, including after-hours services and guidelines on what constitutes an urgent home call-out. “It is entirely appropriate that medical experts are making medical decisions and not politicians,” Ms Henderson said. Ms Henderson said the Federal Government had invested a record $7.1 billion to help Australians with the cost of seeing their GP last year. “No government has invested more in supporting GPs and their patients through Medicare.” “GP bulk billing rates are at a record high under the Coalition,” Ms Henderson said.
Geelong’s tourism board hopes to reach millions of potential Chinese visitors with new app Birds of the Bay. Tourism Greater Geelong and the Bellarine executive director Roger Grant was at the launch of the app on Geelong’s waterfront yesterday. He said the app would encourage Chinese tourists to spend more time in the region, and therefore more money. “What we’re trying to do here is get people to slow down. The Chinese provide us with a great opportunity because they have a great interest in nature.” Mr Grant said the Chinese were captivated by our open skies, sunsets and birdlife like egrets, eagles and even seagulls. “We might take these things for granted. But internationals go ‘Wow, what is that bird?’ “Chinese who don’t have access to those aspects of nature find them fascinating.” The volume of visitors in Geelong and the Bellarine was not always translating into tourism profit, Mr Grant said. A recent Victorian Government study showed the average spend by tourists at the Twelve Apostles was 14 cents. “They’re not spending time or spending dollars,” Mr Grant said. Mr Grant said the app would give tourists more “reason to stop, stay and spend” rather than “skim” travel. “What we want to avoid is profitless volume.” Mr Grant said there had been a significant rise in Chinese tourists hiring motor homes and cars with “an appetite for discovery”. “There are still many who use group tours but we’ve started to see a great increase in what we call the independent traveller. “You will see them in small convoys of two or three motor homes.” The app will link to Tourism Greater Geelong and the Bellarine’s website, which lists their member cafes, caravan parks and tourism operators.

FEATHERED FRIENDS: Ron Smith, Bob Winters and Dora Chiu launch the new app on Geelong's waterfront. (Lindsay Kelley) “What we’re really trying to do is add depth to the experience,” Mr Grant said. The app features the work of Australian environmental educator Bob Winters and will be
available in English and Chinese. International visitors spent 790,700 nights in Geelong and the Bellarine in the past financial year, spending $83 million.
Geelong’s final five Talkin’ Turkey winners are preparing for a tasty Christmas lunch courtesy of the Indy. The winners in the fifth and final week of Geelong’s favourite Christmas game were Lillanna and Laura Mahoney, Bruce Parsons, Alison Tsao, Mary-Ann Worrall and Sue Puche. They each found the Indy’s five hidden turkeys in last week’s ads for Norlane Dental Surgery, Cellarbrations, Affordable Tyres, 1 Fish 2 Fish and Thai House Restaurant. The Indy thanks everyone who played this year as part of the paper’s Five Weeks of Christmas promotion.

Shell purchase fuels Viva Viva Energy will purchase Shell’s aviation business for US$250 million to help secure 700 Geelong jobs, the company’s boss has said. “Jet fuel represents about 10 per cent of Geelong’s production,” said Viva chief executive officer Scott Wyatt. “Securing supply to Melbourne’s airports through this acquisition is very important to the future of our refining business and for the 700plus jobs at Geelong.” The company announced on Monday it had signed an agreement to buy Shell Aviation Australia Pty Ltd (SAA). “We have been the exclusive supplier of jet fuel to Shell Aviation Australia over the past two years. “This purchase enables us to expand into the airports and provide direct supply to customers, which is very exciting for us.” Mr Wyatt said Viva’s Geelong refinery supplied more than half of Tullamarine Airport’s fuel and all Avalon Airport’s. The refinery is one of two in the Southern Hemisphere that makes Avgas for smaller propeller planes, which service many of the regional centres, he said. “We already see a lot of opportunities to grow the aviation business by expanding supply chain capacity to major airports and increasing our presence in the smaller airfields. “This acquisition will see Viva Energy supply more than 50 airports around the country. The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals. Viva expects to complete the acquisition by mid-2017 if the processes proceed on time. Employees of Shell Aviation Australia will remain employed by the company as it transfers to new ownership. “We’ve worked with many Shell Aviation employees for a number of years,” Mr Wyatt said. “We will work closely with Shell to help make the transition to Viva Energy a smooth and welcoming experience for employees and customers alike.”

Murderer at large A murderer could be wandering Geelong after breaching parole, police have warned. Fugitive Taskforce detectives urged anyone who encountered John Douglas Hartwick to stay away from him. The 65-year-old was released from prison in November but his parole was cancelled last week after he breached conditions, police said. Officers began John Douglas Hartwick searching for Hartwick after failing to find him at his Norlane property late last week. Hartwick had a “history of violent offending”, with convictions for murder, armed robbery, assault and drug and firearm offences, police said. He might still be “in the region”. Police described Hartwick has 175cm tall with a thin build, grey hair and tattoos. He was relying on a moon boot “to get around” after breaking his right ankle on 28 November, police said. Anyone who saw Hartwick should phone triple-zero “immediately”.

REFUELED: Scott Wyatt says his company's planned acquisition of an aviation fuel business will secure jobs
Almost a quarter of a million dollars’ worth of flashing signs will tell motorists to slow down around 10 local schools next year, state MPs have announced. The $235,000 investment would ensure the 18 new 40km/h signs were in place before the start of the 2017 school year, the three MPs said. The time-based signs would “help make drivers more aware of children crossing the roads during the morning and afternoon school dropoff periods”. Community feedback, school-hours crash histories and traffic volumes helped determine the sites, the MPs said.

In the frontline of cancer fight By Luke Voogt
HOPE: New McGrath Foundation nurse Michelle Edwards (right) with Andrew Love patient Barbara Mitchell. 12335337-EPJ51-16
Michelle Edwards may be Geelong’s newest McGrath Foundation nurse but her dedication to local women with breast cancer spans more than two decades. “I don’t know much else,” Michelle said. “The role is just an extension of what I’ve done.” The mother of two started at the Andrew Love Cancer Centre to two months ago, after 16 years in a previous role there. “I finished up on the Friday and started on the Monday,” she said. “It’s a privilege to be in this role. We work alongside some amazing surgical, radiation and medical consultants.” The 48-year-old moved from Melbourne to Geelong to be an oncology nurse in 1995. She now lives in Highton with her husband and 14 and 12-year-old daughters. “We love it here,” she said. Michelle became Andrew Love’s second McGrath nurse due the volume of patients the centre treated, she said. “The role came up and I thought with all the things I’ve dealt with over the years it would great to give it a go. It’s fantastic - I just love it.” The position allowed the centre to employ another oncology nurse in her previous position. Each day Michelle helps outpatients get the treatment and knowledge they require, along with psychologists or social workers. “It’s all very daunting to take on board they have been diagnosed with a potential cancer,” she said. “There are so many women out there who are my age or young or older, and their life suddenly comes to a stop.” For Michelle the job is all about giving her patients hope. “If by the end of it they’re walking out of Andrew Love or the surgical clinic with a bit of hope about what they’ve gone through, then we’ve done our job.”

Letters Denied access to star chamber I see that Liam Rodgers (Indy, 16 December) thinks there was an “option“ for myself and shadow local government minister David Davis to “come and observe the whole process“ of the farcical Citizens Jury inquiry into a new mayoral system for Geelong. I’m not sure what planet Mr Rodgers inhabits but the only option I had was to make a 200word submission to this Andrews Governmentappointed kangaroo court. Just 200 words. And my attempts to attend the jury process were rejected. I would have thought a mayor who’d been intimately acquainted with the mayoral system and its pros and cons might be granted the benefit of his experience. But no. And I can’t say I’m surprised. The entire dismissal of the council and mayor of the City of Greater Geelong was a star chamber witch-hunt motivated by base political interests. Fact is, I wanted to make a presentation to the jury. I tried my best to attend and speak specifically to the jury process but basically I was rejected, they could not give me any time. Mr Rodgers says that if myself and David Davis are “calling it a sham it’s interesting to see that neither of them showed up or submitted written evidence“. Well, now Mr Rodgers knows why I didn’t attend and why I didn’t make a submission. As for shams, I think Mr Rodgers’ attempt to paint me black is a sham. Nice try but no cigar, mate. Giddyup, Geelong. Darryn Lyons Geelong
Adventure of the Salmons Last Friday a cursory glance revealed probably upward of 40 coaches parked at Adventure Park. Now a quality regional attraction managed by a second generation, the park’s genesis has come about via vision, determination and what must have been a power of work. I remember in the mid-'90s ringing Ron Salm-
surely to save a lonesome, pathetic gum tree. Road maintenance is horrendous at the corner Barwon Heads and Crows roads, Belmont. Huge potholes are filled and compacted with gravel a couple of times per year, including last week, with seven persons in attendance. No rain of significance has fallen since. When it does, the potholes will return, causing wheel rim damage. Surely bituminising this small area is the answer. A few metres away is a new footpath to Marshall’s minimally used recreation reserve, which was an unnecessary waste of money compared to pothole repair. M O’Beirne Marshall
Buckets & Bouquets Bouquets to Heather for offering me assistance at the front of Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre. She pushed my daughter in the pram as I struggled to hold my toddler as she had a massive tantrum. Heather’s kindness made my day after a long time at work. Grateful Busy Working Mum, Manifold Heights Bouquets to former mayor Darryn Lyons for his comments on graffiti. He is right calling it illegal, wanton vandalism. Over now to law enforcement and the courts to bring these sickening individuals to book with proper penalties. Why do we tolerate this destruction? It wouldn’t be tolerated in Singapore. Sick Of The Sight, Geelong West
on to negotiate an end-of-year excursion for 50 Grade 3/4 North Shore Primary School pupils. Ron and his wife had come from a Cobden dairy farm. Accompanied by their children, they brought hope, a windmill and a commercial oven of sorts. We had some supplementary grants funding to subsidise the day and Ron, a school councillor whose children attended the local primary, was also familiar with excursion costs, so he offered for a very reasonable admission price, a homemade pie, a can of drink, access to the park’s canoes, paddle-ohs and archery, and the promise each pupil would take home their catch of a rainbow trout from his pond. The Salmons, with minimal staff and a North Shore PS stalwart parent, David Quin, worked their behinds off to provide a memorable experience to children from, in many instances, at-bestchallenging home fronts. Upon departure, Ron presented each with a cleaned trout in an ice-filled bag to add a muchneeded smidgen of festive cheer and hence, perhaps a quarter century down the track, the opportunity to touch on an element of the Salmons’ Adventure Park backstory.

Punishing the jobless
May the coach and car parks remain packed throughout the season. Richard Worland Manifold Heights
Opportunities lost, money wasted City of Greater Geelong’s planning department missed out on the Mercer Street silos when they sold at auction for $350,000 despite a valuation over $1 million. The silos had 25 car spaces that would have received a net return of a least $50,000 per annum, which would have been a good return on investment. The silos also had a neatly fitted-out ground floor. An external elevator could have made access to future unit levels, which surely could be designed by a good architect. Bringing back the floating Christmas tree will cost thousands of dollars more than what the silos sold for. They would have been perfect for low-cost housing for young people trying to break into home ownership. The EPA was AWOL on the toxic pine issue in Balcombe Road, Newtown, but did it influence the disgraceful narrowing of the roadway at the Grovedale corner of Barwarre and Grove Road,
A politician’s suggestion to tackle ballooning welfare costs demonstrated the wealthy mentality toward the poor. Under the politician’s plan, anyone under 45 could only be on Newstart for six months before they were cut off, regardless of whether they gained employment. This politician seemed to think that imposing a time limit would somehow create thousands of new jobs so people would go off Newstart. Lack of motivation is not the problem. The unemployed are portrayed as lazy dole bludgers who apparently choose to live below the poverty line, go without food and, in worst-case scenarios, end up homeless. I envy the blissful ignorance of anyone who can honestly say there are plenty of jobs out there and that people just aren’t looking hard enough. Cutting people off is not the solution. More funding must be put into more-affordable education, training and employment-related services. The unemployed deserve empathy and assistance, not to be treated as social pariahs. Who will end up broke and homeless if this scheme is approved, all because their government failed them in their time of need? S Bridson Herne Hill
Plan and prepare THE REASONS ARE BLACK AND WHITE
If you live in a suburb near grasslands, you’re at risk of ire. If you live directly next to parks or paddocks and a grassire starts, walk at least two streets back. If you live two or more streets away, stay where you are, ire is unlikely to spread into built up areas. Stay alert and monitor conditions. Don’t drive, visibility may be poor, accidents are likely, and you could block emergency services.

Women of power take the stage History’s powerful women will grace the stage at the Potato Shed next year in plays celebrating their achievements and non-conformity. First-up Michaela Burger and Greg Wain will share the story of legendary French performer, Edith Piaf, in Exposing Edith. Burger will belt out Edith’s songs as she recounts the tragic life of arguably France’s greatest singer. The taste of French-inspired vignettes will continue when songstress Anya Anastasia performs her seductive and darkly humorous take on Marie Antoinette. Anastasia’s modern cabaret Torte e Mort follows the life of the hedonistic French monarch doomed by revolution three centuries ago. Modern classic Shirley Valentine will follow a middle-aged woman’s journey to rekindle childhood dreams, while Australian playwright Hannie Rayson will share her story in Hello Beautiful. And finally, Finucane and Smith will return to the Potato Shed with the story of one of the world’s most adventurous women in The Exotic Lives of Lola Montez. The Shed’s 2017 season will be a captivating mix of cabaret, circus, ballet, family entertainment and songs, promoters said. The iconic Mark Holden will journey into his family’s past with the The History of the Holden Bros Circus. The former Idol judge play tells the story of his family’s St Leonards circus, founded by onelegged trapeze artist Adolphus Holden, which travelled the Bellarine from 1890 onwards. “(The Peninsula is) sort of ground zero for this story,” Holden told The Indy last week.
EXOTIC: Lola Montez will be just one of history's powerful women on stage at the Potato Shed in 2017. “It’s a lifetime of work, in a way. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for 25 years and I’ve put a lot of effort into it.” Families will adore the Roald Dahl’s classic Witches and Melbourne City Ballet Company’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream will delight dance fans, promoters said. Birdcage Thursdays would take theatrical look at hoarders and the logic behind their habit. The play tells of an ageing mother who resists her daughter’s efforts to clean for an important inspection, as her house fills to the brim with belongings. The Shed’s eclectic season program will excite, entice and educate audiences, promoters said.

DECEMBER 21ST CHRISTMAS SING A LONG LUNCH
Beautiful noise for pub Veteran Geelong cover band Test Pilot Molly will rock the Elephant Castle into the New Year in an energetic, fun-filled show next Saturday. The band is no stranger to the big night, having headlined NYE gigs around the city for years. But this Saturday will be the band’s first time hailing it in at their new home pub, said lead singer Matt Baird. “We’re pumped about the night. We’ll be sure to give them an awesome night of entertainment.” The band has played for huge acts like Evermore, Thirsty Merc, Something For Kate, The Living End and Eskimo Joe. “To open for those acts was absolutely fantastic,” Baird said. But nothing beats taking centre-stage in front of a Geelong pub crowd, he said. “They rock pretty hard for those big anthems. It’s a live music town, rather than a DJ town.” Test Pilot Molly has a core list of 15 or 20 songs that have been popular since day one, Baird said. The band members met through mutual friends and have stayed together for the love of music. Baird admits “I’m a bit balder now than I used

but we still love playing together.” Baird said he is living the dream playing everything from '60s hits to modern rock anthems. “Getting paid to do what we love in life is a beautiful thing. I can’t see anything changing in the foreseeable future.”

They're retro rock 'n' rollers all the way Rock-and-rollers will converge on Geelong early next month for three days of retro festivities. Geelong Jukebox Rockers said its Summer Rock Festival would lure patrons from “all over Victoria”. The festival would begin with “one of Victoria’s top rock and roll band, Fender Benders” on the night of 6 January, the club said. Adelaide’s The Lincoln would play the following night before the rocking concluded with an “outdoor family festival” on 8 January.
Both bands from the previous nights would play again on the final day, alongside band Jump and Jive and a DJ, the club said. Elvis impersonator Chad Gates would attend as dancers took to a pair of two outdoor dance floors. The festival “feel” would continue with ‘50s clothing, memorabilia, food, vinyl records, a rock-and-roll competition, free children’s entertainment, classic cars, hot rods and a show-andshine, the club said.
“At the end of the day someone will be taking home a 1.2 metre jukebox, which is the main prize of the festival raffle.” Breakwater’s White Eagle House would host all the activities, the club said. The first two nights required phone bookings on 0432 503 997 but the final day was “open to all”. “Bring your own chair and shade for a day on the lawn. Sorry, no dogs and no alcohol,” the club said.

TELEVISION GUIDE
SUMMER HOLIDAY GUIDE Tourists drawn to the light Travellers from Europe once drew inspiration on sighting the Cape Otway lighthouse - now as one of the leading Great Ocean Road attractions visitors are inspired by the stunning views from the lighthouse balcony 90 metres above the ocean. Built in 1848, after a series of shipwrecks cost hundreds of lives, the lighthouse still stands in defiance of the elements perched on cliffs, and offers a great day out for all ages. Having recently taken out a Bronze Victorian Tourism Award at the State awards in November the team of staff and knowledgeable guides and story tellers continue to grow and enrich the experiences for visitors at Cape Otway. The daily history and bush tucker talks receive great feedback and these school holidays there are an abundance of extra activities of offer including; Horrible Histories, evening Ghost Tours with Twisted History and a spooky outdoor film night planned for Friday 13 January! Horrible Histories Shows in the Cape Otway Lightstation Workshop, 10am–4pm in December/January 2017: Although somewhat gruesome kids love it as Mary Anne she describes her dreadful sea voyage to Australia in 1841 from 10am to 12noon or from 2pm–4pm they can join Sarah and learn of her 13 ways to die. These sessions are available 10–4pm on 27, 28, 29 Dec 2016 or 3, 4 and 5 January 2017. Ghost Tours hosted by Twisted History are on offer at 8pm Wednesday to Sundays from 8pm from 26 December and all of January. For ghost tours book directly online www.twistedhistory. net.au Light station manager Tricia Goodlet said there was an ongoing fascination with the beacon and its surrounds, with attractions and new activities geared to suit families. The Aboriginal Talking Hut on the grounds takes visitors beyond the history of the lighthouse with guides explaining the finer points of bush medicine and tucker.
Take on the tales Horrible Histories - Pirates! 19 November 2016 – 17 April 2017 Do you have what it takes to be a pirate? This blockbuster family exhibition will sure to be a hit! Interactive and hands-on, it is based on the best-selling Horrible Histories® series. The exhibition comprises a harbour brought to life, with quayside piratey shops and a tavern, plus four vessels in the bay, with a distant desert island. Learn about the ships they sailed on, the punishments they suffered and the rules they lived by. Full of lively illustrations, foul facts and gruesome games, the exhibition is a rollicking ride back in time to the days when putrid pirates ruled the water and gave merchant sailors jelly-legs! The National Wool Museum is the first venue to host this travelling exhibition outside of its Sydney home, the National Maritime Museum of Australia. Tales of woe find an audience at the lighthouse. “You really can take a step back into yesteryear, with our knowledgeable guides sharing stories that bring our history alive,” she said. The fresh air, roaming the historical precinct and the amazing views are certain to rev up an appetite and the lightkeeper’s kitchen stays with tradition, specialising in fine local produce from around the Otways. Ms Goodlet said it was also a great spot for families to enjoy a picnic on the grounds and enjoy taking in the sights, which also include an historic telegraph station and WWII radar bunker.

RAAF Base Williams Point Cook Road Point Cook Ph: 8348 6040 www.airforce.gov.au/raafmuseum www.facebook.com/RAAF.Museum Email: RAAF.MuseumInfo@defence.gov.au BON VOYAGE: Charles Neal’s Corio Princess will offer a whole new experience for people with a disability this summer. 163341
12335928-EPJ51-16
Corio Princess is the only vessel of its type in Australia. The fishing charter will transport up to 49 passengers around the bay this summer, including the disabled. Newcomb designer Charles Neal noticed “there was no way of getting disabled people on board of fishing charters”. “So I decided I would design a boat for disabled people - now a whole family can come on board,” the 75-year-old says. The shipwright grew up wanting to be a carpenter and has built boats since he was 16. “I just loved messing around with boats. I was going to be in the navy.” Corio Princess is quickly gaining interest from retirement villages, Probus, nursing homes and other clubs for its accessibility. “We all know a person in a wheelchair,” Mr Neal says. Disabled friend Brian Kiley has given Mr Neal support and encouragement throughout the building process. He said his friend will be “absolutely thrilled” to be on board to fish this summer. “He’ll be my guest of honour. I have already employed one disabled person and I want to employ more. “The galley has been designed so that someone can cook from a wheelchair.”

SUMMER HOLIDAY GUIDE
The RAAF Museum is filled with over 30 display aircraft and a magnitude of memorabilia tracing the history of the RAAF, and fascinating tales of heroic deeds.
Other disabity-friendly features include a handicapped toilet, a “flat deck with no bumps” and drop-down white seats, allowing easy access for people to fish off the boat in a wheelchair. “I’m also supplying a defibrillator on board and one of the bench seats can turn into a bed.” But the challenge is not over for Mr Neal. “There are more exciting things coming in 2017. I’m just looking forward to making people happy.”

Easy, efficient and expert at parts, repairs for all vehicles Car services, brake checks, fixing clutches – getting these jobs done quickly, efficiently and easily requires a solid handful of essentials. One is location, or being able to get to and from the mechanic shop readily. Another is quick access by the mechanic shop to spare parts, which can readily trim a day off the wait for a car’s return. A third consideration is quality work, the fourth is friendly extra care and the fifth is courtesy pick-up and drop-off. Geelong Brake and Clutch’s Denis and Lesley Williams have made meeting each of these points articles of faith at their South Geelong business. Their clients don’t have to fight city traffic to get to them. Expert advice and product knowledge for all makes and models of vehicles – including offroad and heavy duty vehicles – makes GBC an easy choice. Superior customer service and care is the icing on the cake. GBC offers: brake rotors and pads plus rotor machining; drum brake kits and machining; clutch replacement kits and flywheel machining; and an extensive range of suspension parts; driveshaft replacement kits; and a brake and clutch hose fabrication service, all covering most vehicle makes and models including commercial vehicles and 4WDs. “We have a large range of brake and clutch parts usually on hand, making us quicker, easier to access and we take extra care of our customers,” Lesley says. “We go the extra mile to make people realise that they are important to us. And safety is the key issue too, as we all use the road”. “We‘re also happy to do no-obligation quotes.” Geelong Brake and Clutch is at 8 Dowsett St, phone 5222 7411.

Whether it’s for business or pleasure, Truck Car Rentals has transport requirements covered. Truck Car Rentals has an extensive range of vehicles to suit a variety of requirements, owner Graeme says. “Being a small local operation, our prices are more competitive than bigger companies. “Plus, we can offer a high level of customer service because we know the local needs.” Truck Car Rentals recently expanded its fleet to include 46 seater buses, adding to its 12 and 22 seaters. “A lot of schools around Geelong use our services when they need extra buses,” Graeme says. “We have a lot of local clubs and groups hire the smaller buses as well as families for get-togethers or outings.” Truck Car Rentals has several enclosed trucks suitable for do-it-yourself removals, requiring only a car licence. A range of light commercials and vans, tray trucks, cars and single-axle trailers for the weekend handyman are also available. “Our rates are lower during the week so that adds flexibility to small business vehicle requirements,” Graeme says. Truck Car Rentals also has everything up to prime movers and trailers, great for logistics businesses trying to cope with extra demand. “If your vehicle is in for a service or repairs, Truck Car Rentals has the answer. “Whatever your needs, we can assist in finding the right vehicle for the job.” Truck Car Rentals is at 215 Station St, Corio, phone 5275 8288 or visit truckcarrentals.com.au.

Tucson joins the wheely big show By Derek Ogden Is it I wonder, an attempt at quirky Korean humour that the new Hyundai Tucson, celebrating 30 years in Australia, requires turning the ignition key to start the engine (no push-button fire-up) and eschews satellite navigation.
It certainly takes me back more than a quarter of a century to the times when Hyundai was a funny little cheap-and-cheerful car. How things change. Hyundai is now consistently in the top three sellers in Australia with 10 or more per cent of total sales and has a huge range of quality vehicles. Seriously, the limited edition 30th anniversary medium-size Hyundai SUV stands shoulder to shoulder with a special edition of its cousin, the Santa Fe large SUV as a reminder of the South Korean marque’s success down-under with advanced levels of performance, special features and value for money. Only 300 examples of each vehicle are bound for Australia. At $37,750 the Tucson ‘30’ Special Edition, plus on-road costs, sits in the centre of the Tucson range and is covered by the Hyundai iCare program and includes Lifetime Service Plan, fiveyear unlimited kilometre warranty, satellite navigation updates, complimentary roadside assist for 12 months on new vehicles, complimentary first service, a Customer Care Centre and myHyundai owner website. In styling terms the Tucson ‘30’ Special Edition is no throw-back, exhibiting all the physical features of the modern mid-size SUV. Based on the Hyundai ActiveX model, the Tucson ‘30’ Special Edition adds a combination of matte-grey side steps and matte-black 19-inch RAYS alloy wheels. At the rear, the limited edition also sports a new twin-outlet muffler integrated into the rear bumper, which also incorporates a rear diffuser. The Ash Blue exterior paint is exclusive to the Tucson ‘30’ Special Edition together with unique ‘30’ badging. Projector beam headlights with escort and welcome functions, automatic dusk-sensing headlights, front fog lights are backed up by LED
daytime running Lights, an LED high-mount stop light and LED front positioning lights. Hyundai Tucson ‘30’ has an interior is spacious with surfaces and controls of soft-touch materials and finishes. Leather appointed seats include two-way electric driver’s lumbar support and 60/40 split folding rear seats with multi-stage backrest angles. The load area incorporates a cargo cover and net. There’s a premium feel steering wheel and gear knob, plus electric folding and heated side mirrors and one-touch window operation with antipinch safety switch. The link to information and entertainment is via a 7.0-inch touchscreen and six speakers. At hand is MP3 capability, Apple CarPlay, Aux and USB audio input with digital iPod compatibility. Bluetooth connectivity includes hands-free phone and audio streaming, while steering wheelmounted audio controls are at the driver’s fingertips. Newly introduced Apple CarPlay is advanced smartphone technology providing access to Apple Maps navigation, Siri command functions - including hands-free phone calls, messaging and dictation, music, calendar entries, apps and more.. Commands also can be entered via the touchscreen. Existing owners of Apple CarPlay can be connected free of charge via a software upgrade, taking just 15 minutes at Hyundai dealership service departments. With most people ‘packing’ a mobile phone or tablet these days with access to satellite facilities, the absence of a navigation system is no great hardship. The Tucson ‘30’ engine is a detuned version of the direct-injection turbo-petrol unit that powers the Veloster SR Turbo. It has peak power of 130 kW at 5500 rpm and maximum torque of 265 Nm between 1500 and 4500 revs. The 1.6-litre motor is matched with Hyundai’s in-house developed seven-speed dual clutch transmission and Hyundai’s Active On-Demand AWD system with front and rear lock mode.

SPORT Our Guthrie will be a star
A mixed bag ON THE BITE
been behind the ball and all of a sudden he comes through and intercepts and takes the game on." The Cats have described the younger Guthrie as a “dashing defender”. He finished runner-up in the Calder Cannons’ best and fairest after an “impressive season” in the TAC Cup, the club said. Guthrie had set his sights on becoming an even better player than his brother, according to recent quotes published in a News Corp paper. “I will take advice from him but I want to be my own sort of player,” he said. Guthrie planned to spend next season living
with his brother at Newtown, 500m from Simonds Stadium. “It’s just awesome that we are team-mates now," the older brother said on the Cats’ website. “Six years is a big age gap, so we didn’t play footy together in juniors. I used to beat Zach up a bit, but now he’s taller than me. “If he can catch me weight-wise he will be a force to deal with.” A third Guthrie brother, Josh, would also spend time at the Cattery as he tried out for Geelong’s VFL squad, the club said.
BIG WHEELS: Cycling champions Steele von Hoff and Ruby Roseman-Gannon draw media attention to Geelong’s waterfront for the launch of next week’s criterium series (Kate Arnott).
Cyclists’ need for speed will be fueled on the track The “world’s fastest criterium series” will kick off in Geelong next week, organisers have announced. Competitors in the 2017 Mitchelton Bay Cycling Classic will have to forgo New Year’s Eve celebreations as they prepare for racing to begin in Geelong on 1 January. The organisers and officials officially launched the 2017 series on Geelong’s waterfront last Friday, promising three days of spectacular racing. Geelong will host the first stage before the event travels to Portarlington on 2 January and finishes on its traditionally Williamstown circuit the following day. The series featured “some of Victoria’s most
spectacular coastal scenery as its backdrop”, the organisers said. Race director John Trevorrow was looking forward to a successful series. “Spectators can expect a fantastic event, which has become infamous among the cycling community as the lead into the Summer of Cycling," Trevorrow said. Two-time national criterium champion Steele von Hoff confirmed he would line-up in Geelong. “I can’t wait to mix it with the internationals and ride with my mates,” von Hoff said. “We’re all friends until we pin the race numbers on and then it’s take no prisoners.” Junior World Madison Champion Ruby Rose-
man-Gannon said she would compete in her second MBCC after recently completing VCE. “It’s amazing because you’re riding with your idols, you’re riding with people who are racing where you want to be,” the youngster said. “It’s a pretty incredible experience to ride and look over your shoulder and see Gracie Elvin or one of the GreenEDGE girls next to you.” Organsiers expected holidays crowds “to flock” to the event as local superstars like Caleb Ewan and Chloe Hosking chased another title against internationals such as UK three-time Olympic gold medallist Ed Clancy.
Chris Pitman Mixed catches attracted many anglers to St Leonards over the past week. Tackleworld Geelong’s Peri Stavropoulos, farther Michael and Damien Raven ventured out early last Friday in search of whiting and squid. They got stuck into whiting in 5m south of St Leonard’s Yacht Club. Shifting into the Swan Bay channel the trio then started casting soft plastics for a catch of silver trevally and Australian salmon. Then they moved around to the Point Lonsdale Bight, where Damien boated an excellent squid on an artificial jig. Clifton Springs remained busy with whiting and squid. The Curlewis Bank was hot for both species, with squid devouring size three jigs while the whiting took pippies. Snapper anglers boated fish to 6kg on the edge of Point Richard Channel with silver whiting baits. Michael Moore had a few quick casts at Queenscliff Harbour on Sunday afternoon, taking a 40cm trevally on soft plastic. The catch surprised Michael because the tide was roaring out at a high rate of knots. Other anglers took pinkie snapper at the harbour entrance. Corio Bay produced well-conditioned flathead on plastics cast over the spoil grounds. Gulp Turtleback Worms in Pumpkinseed and rigged on 1/8oz jibs were a standout. Anglers fishing along the Great Ocean Road rock platforms landed salmon to 2kg. Metal lures around 25g to 40g worked best. Anglers fishing baits landed gummy sharks on the beaches at night. Freshwater anglers found newly opened Stony Creek Reservoir productive for brown and Rainbow trout along with the odd redfin. Lures, bait and fly all worked a treat. The Barwon River around Breakwater through to Queen’s Park was outstanding for carp. Corn kernels on lightly weighted running sinker rigs caught fish to 6kg, although a few were taken off soft plastics. Jef Klasevski had a fast-paced session at Wurdee Boluc Reservoie, banking a brown trout of 65cm and 3.3kg on a mudeye suspended under a float. Jef was kept so busy he could only fish one rod at a time. Lake Bullen Merri fished well for Chinook salmon averaging just over 1kg along with the odd Rainbow trout. The holiday period should produce good fishing for whiting and squid along the Curlewis Bank off Clifton Springs, while snapper anglers should target the spoil grounds with soft plastics at night.

The younger brother of Cameron Guthrie looks likely to follow in his footsteps to become a star at the Cats, according to a team-mate. Zach Guthrie was already showing similarities with his older brother after Geelong chose him with pick 33 in the rookie draft, Jackson Thurlow told PodCats. The 18-year-old was making an impression at training despite his slight frame, Thurlow said. “He can really move, and reads the play similar to the way Cam does. I think there’s a lot of similarities between them. “A few times (in match-practice at training) he’s
