Puck’s a charitable soul By Hollie Harris THIS friendly face is known to many in our community as the face of ‘Puck’. Each year we celebrate a local who has done outstanding work to help make our Noosa community a better place and this year, we have named Glenn ’Puck’ Puckeridge as Noosa Today’s Person of the Year. This quiet, humble man works

tirelessly behind the scenes of many fundraisers throughout the year and dedicated countless hours to those in need. He has been a valued and respected employee with Noosa Golf Club for over 10 years, and during this time Glenn has given a great deal of personal time to contribute to the community. Over the years, Glenn has not only been involved in, but also been

the sole organiser of many fundraising events, in particular the annual Smile for a Child Combined Clubs Charity Golf Day held in September. He is well known by so many members of our community for his outstanding efforts to support other businesses and charities and as a very selfless and giving person. The Smile for a Child Charity Golf Day, an initiative of five clubs in the Noosa area (Sunshine Beach

SLSC, Noosa Heads SLSC, Noosa yacht and Rowing Club, Tewantin Noosa RSL and Noosa Golf Club) was first held in 2007 and has grown to be a successful event. The golf day helps several charities such as the Starlight Foundation, Sunshine Butterflies, Sunny Kids, Hear and Say Centre, KIDS Foundation and The Leukaemia Foundation to name a few. To date, Glenn has helped raise

$323,000 for local children’s charities. It goes without saying that Glenn is a very humble and valued team member of Noosa Golf Club and all staff, members and the community can’t thank him enough for his continued efforts. There isn’t a more deserving person to receive the honour of this award as a small token of appreciation.

2016 – THE YEAR THAT WAS

NEWSMAKERS

What a year it was... FOR Noosa, 2016 is sure to go down as the year of protest and action. The year has seen a demand for better environmental practices, a call for love and acceptance, bare bums on Hastings Street and huge community gatherings to call for the re-opening of a much-loved golf course. The year also saw the election of Noosa’s second council since the successful de-amalgamation, plus plenty of news from hospice protests to calls to save the Cooroy Memorial Hall. Containers for cash ON Sunday 24 January, the Noosa Community Biosphere Association (NCBA) joined fellow environmental groups, Surfrider Association, Boomerang Alliance, Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland and Sunshine Coast Environment Council on Noosa Main beach to highlight the need for both a cash-for-containers scheme and also a ban on plastic bags. Since their protest, community members have sewn Boomerang Bags and installed them in shops throughout the shire to help reduce the use of single-use plastic bags, and both the State Government and Opposition have begun talks to ban plastic bags throughout the state, as well as introduce cashfor- container schemes. Golf course call for action THE closure of the Peregian Springs Golf Course was shocking, leaving many in the community furious and sparking the formation of a residents association. As a united front, the locals took on property developer giant AVEO and called for the much-loved golf course to re-open as soon as possible. Their prayers were answered, and just last month the golf course reopened to the public with plans for the clubhouse to also re-open this year. Golf Management Services have been given a five-year lease for the facility, with many locals returning to the greens.

Close council elections RESIDENTS went to the polls on Saturday 19 March to elect the second Noosa Council since de-amalgamation was won, but the results of the election were long-awaited. Often too close to call, the result was finally called on 30 March with Tony Wellington the new Mayor of Noosa. Former councillor Sandy Bolton was defeated, but previous candidate Jess Glasgow finally found a place on the council, along with Brian Stockwell and first time politician Ingrid Jackson. Frank Pardon, Frank Wilkie and Joe Jurisevic all returned for another term. Rainbow flag flown by council THE Noosa community celebrated International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT) on Tuesday 17 May with a colourful picnic and the raising of a rainbow flag. Councillor Ingrid Jackson took to Facebook with a message of support for the day. “Councillors agreed Noosa is a place where everyone, regardless of ethnic and cultural differences, age, gender, ability or sexuality can feel included and valued,” Cr Jackson said. “Noosa joins Brisbane City Council and places around the world in embracing diversity in this way.” Hospice protest VOLUNTEERS of the Sunshine Hospice walked-out of the Cooroy and Tewantin op-shops in June 2016, protesting a lack of communication from the

board since the Doonan hospice was closed in December 2015. A public meeting was held by the former-volunteers to inform the community on the progress of the protest and an extraordinary meeting was called and held at the Big Pineapple in Nambour. Emotional scenes and accusations of dishonesty marred the meeting with no real outcome achieved. Since then, the volunteers have cut ties with the Sunshine Hospice Board, have found a property and established a new Katie Rose Cottage charity and hospice and opened two op-shops to raise funds for operations. Bums on Hastings A look back at 2016 wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the nude protests on Hastings Street just last month. Local activist Robin Bristow, along with supporters, took to the street to call for leniency when it comes to nudity at A-Bay. The furore started when 11 men were fined or charged with wilful exposure at Noosa’s unofficial nudist beach, A-Bay. Witnesses claimed police were hiding in the bushes before jumping out to confront nudists. The protest was called to demand police offer warnings rather than fines or charges for those who visit A-Bay, as well as call for changes to legislation to allow local councils to designate nudist beaches within their shire. Noosa Council has remained silent on the issue.

2016 – THE YEAR THAT WAS

MAYOR'S MESSAGE

Noosa Shire is sitting pretty AS the CEO said to me the other day, “This council has more projects on the go than almost any other council of comparable size”. One reason for that is our proactive councillors, forever driving the organisation to deliver the best for their community. We are also blessed with many dedicated and hardworking staff. I keep getting wonderful feedback from residents about their interactions with our council workers. Many of the current council projects, like the zero emissions strategy and the new planning scheme, won’t bear fruit for a few years. There’s also the transport strategy, the new corporate plan and work on our overarching environment policy. The long-term capital works program is finally coming to fruition, with staff concluding their detailed assessment of the one billion dollars of public assets council must maintain on behalf of the Noosa community. Noosa Shire is sitting pretty at the end of 2016. Financially, council is on target, with another good assessment from the Queensland Audit Office. The economy is bubbling along, and tourism has hit another high. Figures from Tourism Research Australia show an increased tourism spend in 2015-16 of nearly 25 per cent on the previous financial year, with international visitors spending almost 50 per cent more. Latest official figures also show Noosa Shire’s growth in GDP to be above the state average and unemployment below the state average. So what will 2017 bring? From council’s point of view, a new Noosa River plan, the start of a new waste service, roll out of the electric bus trial, shire-wide signage

audit, Noosaville foreshore master plan, design of an iconic hinterland playground, revamp of the North Shore Beachfront Campground and the Peregian Digital Hub taking shape. Much of this work will require consultation with our community, so expect more forums and more opportunities to contribute through our Your Say Noosa website portal. Our better resourced economic development section will also be consulting with industry sectors and providing a one-stop shop for business advice. At the same time, our arts, culture and heritage plan is being developed. As you can probably guess, there is a wonderful forward momentum in council at the moment. The new corporate plan lays out the many objectives we have set for ourselves, as well as our new vision statement: “Noosa Shire - different by nature”. Those essential differences both attract visitors and make the shire a great place to live. And it’s not just the lack of big city symbols, village atmosphere, protected natural areas and raw beauty of Noosa Shire that delivers its magic, it’s also the community itself. We are blessed to live amongst an active and highly engaged community: one that not only keeps council on its toes, but consistently adds to our social capital. If I am starting to sound smitten, then I make no apology for it. Noosa is one of the best places on this planet, and I am deeply honoured to help bear responsibility to keep it that way. Have a great year everyone. Tony Wellington, Noosa Mayor.

"Noosa is one of the best places on this planet" - Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington. Right: It's been a busy year for Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington but he always takes the time to support local groups such as Noosa Christian College's annual Billy Cart Grand Prix where he raced Peter Wellington MP.

2016 – THE YEAR THAT WAS

MP'S MESSAGE

The pleasure and the pain STATE Noosa MP Glen Elmes has described 2016 as a year of mixed emotion. Mr Elmes has expressed a frustration at a lack of action on major issues from State Government, but praised Noosa Council for its proactive approach to local issues. Mr Elmes said regaining financial subsidies for students who are forced to move to the Pomona campus of Noosa Distrcict State School was among his current fights with the State Government. Mr Elmes said he had sent letters to Transport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe on 13 June, 27 July and 11 August and met with the minister on 31 August, but to no avail. Another letter on 7 November also failed to get a result. He has asked for the minister to look into the Bus Travel Assistance program after several local students lost the financial subsidy when they were forced to move to the Pomona campus. “It’s not their fault the school is too small and they had to move. All I want is for the minister to find a solution for these students,” Mr Elmes said. “This is getting frustrating.” Mr Elmes said he was also losing patience with the State Government’s review into TAFE, saying the campus is sitting idle, wasting away while the Government reviews the TAFE industry. Mr Elmes also wrote to the

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk on 8 December to ask for a meeting to discuss the management of Noosa River. In the letter Mr Elmes writes he is concerned about the future of the river, the unauthorised use of the river foreshore by lease holders, and abandoned vessels and calls for the Government’s urgent attention. On a more positive note, Mr Elmes said some great news for 2016 was the outcome of the council election, with former Councillor Tony Wellington elected as Noosa’s second mayor since the successful de-amalgamation. “The elections saw the retirement of (former Mayor) Noel Playford, who played a very active role in the community ... There were a lot of changes with the new council as they came in with Tony (Wellington) as mayor,” he said. “But one of the highlights has been the friendly, proactive association that has continued on with (Mr Wellington) and (council CEO) Brett de Chastel since the election. "We’ve been able to work very closely together. I know places where that is not the case between the mayor and the state member, where communication breaks down and when that happens the electorate suffers. I’m very pleased with what we’re able to do here.”

Mr Elmes said over $400,000 in state funding for local organisations had been delivered to the region, and policy announcements such as the introduction of a cash for containers scheme, a ban on plastic bags and a 30-year lease for the Noosa Hospital were among the best policy announcements from his party. “The Noosa Hospital policy announcement was very significant because for the first time one of the two major political parties has put their foot on the sticky paper and said on the 30 June 2020 when the lease finishes, here is the way forward,” he said. “The extension of the lease for 30 years means Ramsay Health can plan for the future. Because they have certainty of tenure, they can spend a lot of cash and bring the hospital up to scratch. “They can invest to expand and increase services, which means more people can be looked after at their local hospital. This will also help create at least 100 local jobs.” Mr Elmes also ranked the inaugural Queensland Day celebrations on 6 June among the highlights of the year. He said the best part of the awards was how the nominees were put forward by members of local clubs and associations. “It’s a great way to recognise local heroes,” he said.

2016 – THE YEAR THAT WAS

TOURISM

Kudos for tourism TOURISM is one of Noosa’s major industries, bringing over $800 million into the economy and employing nearly 16,000 locals. Throughout the year, the peak tourism body, Tourism Noosa, works to entice national and international visitors to the region through their annual marketing plan. It’s been a very busy and very successful 2016 for the Tourism Noosa team and the bussiness they support. Throughout 2016, the team included a diverse range of digital, social media, print and video activity in their marketing plan resulting in one of the region’s most successful tourism seasons. One of the organisation’s most successful campaigns was the 2016 Winter Campaign designed to remind Sydney and Melbourne residents that Noosa’s beautiful beaches and national parks are the best place to be throughout winter. The campaign joined with Virgin Australia, and also features a comprehensive print and digital partnership with Australian Traveller, digital ads with Fairfax and Facebook, the Melbourne tram and a Noosa activation in central Sydney, supported by branded buses and a radio campaign with NOVA. To bolster international interest in the region, Tourism Noosa represented Noosa, Sunshine Coast and Gympie Cooloola at the World Youth and Student Travel Conference in Serbia, meeting buyers and presenting as a guest speaker on Noosa Eco Check. The Tourism Noosa staff also enriched relationships with national and international media outlets such as the Great Walks Magazine and Australian Mountain Bike Magazine by hosting their writers, which resulted in a front cover for Noosa, a feature article and an online gallery.

Tourism Noosa also co-hosted four of China’s most influential golf group wholesalers and travel agents and offered co-operative marketing opportunities for members in golfing magazines. They also hosted six senior UK trade partners during Noosa’s first stand-alone trade familiarisation, visiting Australia Zoo, Noosa Everglades, Fraser Island and Lady Elliot Island, with flight support provided by Thai Airways. Through such famils, the team reached over $40 million in media value and hosted over 60 targeted media famils of Queensland, national and international media. Locally, Tourism Noosa supported 18 major and emerging festivals and boosted engagement with events via social media and developed the Sustainable Events Guidelines to help ensure event sustainability. Some of the region’s major events included the Noosa Summer Swim, Noosa Festival of Surfing, the inaugural Noosa Food and Wine Festival, Pomona King of the Mountain, the inaugural Noosa International Film Festival and the Noosa International Rugby Sevens, just to name a few. Tourism Noosa also supports local tourism operators through workshops, training and networking nights and this year membership reached a record 604 businesses. Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said while it had been a great 2016 for local tourism operators and the organisation, it was important to think about the future. “It’s about planning for the future, and we have commenced a detailed refresh of the Noosa Sustainable Destination Action Plan which will chart our activity and strategic priorities through to 2022,” Mr Massingham said.

Today Show host Lisa Wilkinson helped launch the refreshed Holiday Guide earlier this year. Our Visitor Information Centre (VIC) supported State Member for Noosa Glen Elmes’s Noosa Youth Ambassadors program, with Sunshine Beach High School students offering visitors help and directing them to the Visitor Information Centre.

Tourism Noosa hosted a full live outdoor broadcast of The Today Show featuring all the hosts, as well as numerous weather crosses from both 7 and 9 network morning programs throughout the year.

The iconic Noosa tram in Melbourne reminding residents the best place to spend winter is on Noosa's beaches.

Visit Noosa’s Instagram platform reached over 56,000 followers and Facebook has 42,000 followers with each enjoying strong engagement. Social media imagery has regularly been re-shared by Tourism and Events Queensland, Tourism Australia and other high-profile pages.

A TWO metre crocodile has was reportedly seen in Coolum Creek on Monday morning. Alex Ranson saw the croc while paddling a ski along the creek looking for a fishing spot. The 14-year-old said two men in a tinnie coming from the opposite direction shouted out a warning to him about the crocodile as he saw it slip into the water off the creek bank. He paddled flat-out back to the boat ramp, where his father was waiting as he wasn’t sure where the croc was. “At the start, I didn’t really think anything, and when I saw the boat come past and scared it into the water, it kind of followed me. “It was about the same size

as my ski and I was thinking of it knocking me in,” he said. His father, Charles, was surprised to hear of a croc this far south. “The fellows in the tinnie had come in and asked my older son, ’Is that your brother? He shouldn’t be paddling down there. There’s a

croc down there’,“ Mr Ranson said. Some other fishermen evacuated the area, which was a few hundred metres downstream from West Coolum Road boat ramp. The Sunshine Coast Council is looking into the sighting.

Cop injured by getaway cars

12335712-51-16

By Hollie Harris A POLICE officer had his leg crushed between two getaway cars after trying to stop a robbery at the Cooroy Mitre 10 early Monday morning. Sergeant Mal Scott was off-duty when he responded to reports of the 2 January robbery. When he arrived he caught a gang of men, wearing balaclavas and carrying sledgehammers, attempting to flee the scene. Sgt Scott was wrestling one of thieves when he was hit by a vehicle driven by another one of the offenders and pinned against another car. Superintendent Darryl Johnson said the sergeant received non-life-threatening injuries and was rushed to Nambour Hospital for treatment. “He’s in pretty good spirits. He’s sore, being treated in hospital and hopefully he’ll be released later today,“ Supt Johnson said on Tuesday. He said the local officer-in-

charge was a well-known local figure, who was responding to a call to him personally by a member of the public. “The actions of the officer were very courageous," he said. “He was alone, and that’s the nature of country policing on occasion is that you attend these incidents by yourself. “A number of these incidents where vehicles were used, and we’re assuming they were stolen, have been linked to a number of related crimes such as petrol drive-offs and we’ve seen a common thread across the Sunshine Coast and south east Queensland over

recent times,“ Supt Johnson said. The thieves fled the scene in a northerly direction. Police believe the offenders may be responsible for a recent string of robberies at a bottle shop and petrol station in the Pomona region. Police are calling on anyone who saw two white Isuzu utes in the Cooroy township early on Monday morning to come forward. Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Noosa Criminal Investigation Branch on 5440 8167.

LETTERS Moved to sponsor KUDOS to Noosa Today for their uplifting and inspiring front page story ’Moo-d for Justice’. Congratulations and thank you to Anthony Walsgott for establishing the new Cooroy sanctuary. We welcome you to Noosa’s hinterland! We often turn a blind eye to the widespread unethical treatment of livestock in the factory farming industry merely for the cheap consumer costs of a daily meat and dairy diet. Not only is this intense farming practice unethical, it is also unsustainable. We often hear about global warming equating to increased carbon emissions, but we seem to be oblivious to the adverse impact an estimated 70 billion livestock have on our environment. That’s right - 70 billion! A less intense meat and dairy diet by humans would significantly decrease the effects of global warming. Methane gas released into our atmosphere, compacted soils increasing run off and erosion,

ground water contamination and polluted waterways are some of the negative effects factory farming is having on our natural world. Australian farmers should be able to make a decent living without being pressured by the big business agricultural industry to increase production, and at the same time, squeeze farmers out of profits. Thanks to Noosa Today’s story, our family is sponsoring a Save a Cow Foundation cow. The Wood Family, Doonan.

MY faith in humanity has been sorely dashed. I actually thought that after my last letter, Steve Hall would take the hint and stop boring the readers with his verbal diarrhoea on manmade global warming, but, alas, you cannot keep a good propagandist down! Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your outlook) the new year does not look favourable for him and all those other alarmists, and they may as well bend over, put their head between their knees and kiss their derrieres goodbye, because they are about to be trumped. At last, a world leader prepared to call “climate change” for what it is - a scam! Phillip Rutherford, Cooroibah.

which has handed $2.2 billion to the fossil fuel industry. If our governments won’t be accountable on climate, we can force financial institutions to take note. NAB has ruled out funding Adani’s mega coal mine, and Australia’s largest super fund is now offering a fossil-free option. Perhaps it is time for our council to park our money more ethically, and jump on the world wide fossil fuel divestment movement. As this trend accelerates, there is an ever-increasing risk of fossil fuels becoming stranded assets. Bruce Hallett, Tewantin.

Get set to laugh all night long as Strassman and friends some to The J in May.

live today NOOSA’S LIFESTYLE GUIDE

Bare hilarity of Strassman STRASSMAN returns with a brand new show filled with an evening of hilarious comedy and side-splitting antics from Ted E. Bare, Chuck Wood, and their crazy friends. He is coming to The J this May. David Strassman is the darkedged, avant-garde artist who lifted ventriloquism into the 21st century,

acquiring a multitude of fans and critical acclaim along the way. Led by the evil Chuck Wood and delightfully cute Ted E Bare, Strassman’s “renegade band of puppets“ (as The Scotsman called them) create a multi-layered stage performance. Audiences forget that its actually a one-man show!

As a concert act, Strassman tours mostly Australia and New Zealand, filling theatres for weeks at a time. As one of the top theatrical acts, he combines a unique perspective with jaw-achingly funny material. And he’s not only popular in Australia. Strassman’s radically original theatrical productions have played

London’s West End, New York’s Off Broadway and the Edinburgh Fringe. Yet he’s most proud that he gets as many laughs in a theatre in Outback Australia - without all the tech wizardry -- as he does in LA or New York. His latest show is sure to be hilarious, clever and above all, a great

night out. Prices are $79.90 for premium seat, $59.90 for A-Reserve and $49.90 for B-Reserve, so grab your tickets online at www.thej.com.au before they sell out and lock in a night with Strassman on Thursday 18 May at 7pm.

Front up to a killer Queen tribute By Hollie Harris JOHNNY Blunt has the best problem in the world - he’s got the spirit of Freddie Mercury sitting on his shoulder. This has resulted in Killer Queen, Australia’s premier Queen tribute band. Killer Queen was conceived in 2003 by the actor and musician. Already an experienced and versatile performer, Blunt decided to pay homage to the greatest rock act of all time. Add a hot band of Queensland’s noosatoday.com.au

best session musicians, a wardrobe of detailed and exactly replicated costumes, a stage presence second to none and you have The Killer Queen Show. Johnny Blunt’s eerie resemblance to Freddie Mercury is the final icing on an incredible, melodic cake. Layers include an astounding band that uses no backing tracks, a guitarist using a Brian May signature guitar and authentic costumes. The Killer Queen Show starts with the hits of the 1970s - the decade of leather and long hair and goes right through to the 80s and

90s when Queen was the hottest act in music. This show will not disappoint, with such immortal rock hits as Crazy Little Thing Called Love, We Will Rock You, We Are The Champions and of course, Bohemian Rhapsody. Killer Queen has developed its own fan base throughout Australia and overseas as it has toured extensively. The act has been featured on Channel 9, played unplugged sessions on 4KQ and 4BC, featured in a two page spread in Woman’s Day and appeared at the Big Gay

Day and in the third season of Australia’s Got Talent. And they call Queensland home, being the only Queen Tribute show in the Sunshine State. If you’d like to catch this amazing show, tickets are only $20 for non-members and $10 for members for their Friday 6 January show at 8pm in the Diggers Bar of the Tewantin-Noosa RSL. Tickets are available from reception or dial’n’charge on 5447 1766. Make sure you grab your tickets soon as this show will sell out!

FOR fans of Philip Kerr, there is no Bernie Gunther and no famous Nazis in this novel. January Window feels like a different world altogether. Being set in London, with the reader drawn into the life and death business of running a premier soccer club with all its illusions of glamour and corruption, and the overnight fall of star players. I became completely engrossed, despite being so very not interested in football of any kind. It is no surprise to learn that the club is owned by a Ukrainian oligarch, and that the management and players are a mix of different nationalities and temperaments. The January Window is the four week period when the FIFA allows a new player to be registered by a European Club, and during which time players are bought and sold while millions change hands. Scott Manson is team coach for London City club. His job is to keep the training at top level, keep the lads out of trouble, keep the press on his side and smooth over all of the many problems which arise in a business such as this. He is admired and trusted by players, management, and the owner. But now a grave has been discovered dug in the middle of the pristine pitch, and shortly after the body of the much loved Portuguese manager, Joao Zarcois, is found dead and battered at the club’s stadium. This is an apparent murder and Scott is taken aside by his boss, Viktor Sokonikov, and asked to look into the circumstances surrounding the death.

Scott is aware that Viktor’s background is dubious and that he does not wish the police to get too close to his affairs or the source of his wealth, and so amid outpourings of grief, Scott and the police pursue their separate enquiries. The end is unexpected. It is a treat to read an author who unfailingly delivers a story a little out of the ordinary, with believable complex characters, an intriguing mystery, and a background with substance. I very much enjoyed this book from the Noosa Library.

Eclectic mix of music By Hollie Harris WHAT do you call a group of seven singing and strumming ukulele players? That was the question this Sunshine Coast group struggled to answer and pondered for some time. With music ranging from pop classics to calypso to contemporary, a suitable band name evaded them and then at a recent festival gig one of them spotted a drink vendor’s sign advertising Pineapple Crush. It was the perfect name to sum up their own unique look and sound and with the vendor’s blessing they adopted the name and Pineapple Crush (the band) was born.

The band has been busy playing festivals including Hervey Bay, Cooroy Mt. Spring Festival, Cooroy Christmas Festival, Lights On The Lake, Currimundi and Palmwoods Street Party. Now as a special treat to radio listeners, Pineapple Crush is scheduled to play a selection of favourite Christmas songs on Christmas Eve, 24 December at 11am on 101.3 Noosa FM’s ‘Magic Bus’ show. So tune in for a treat for live streaming at noosacommunityradio.org. Pineapple Crush will be bringing their special musical cocktail to the Sunshine Coast Ukulele Festival in Kenilworth, 20-23 April, 2017.

Pineapple Crush; eclectic, fun music to your ears.

Tips to beating the heat By Hollie Harris HOT weather can be dangerous - and seniors are often more prone to its threat. With temperatures creeping up in the last couple of weeks, seniors can feel more vulnerable to the heat than most. This can happen for several reasons. Seniors' ability to notice changes in their body temperature decreases with age. Underlying health conditions can make seniors less able to adapt to heat. Some medicines can also contribute to dehydration. Fortunately, a few simple precautions are all that’s needed to keep well during our hot weather. Drink plenty of liquids Dehydration is the root of many heatrelated health problems. Drink plenty of water or juice, even if you’re not thirsty. But remember to avoid alcoholic or caffeinated drinks, as they can actually contribute to dehydration. Wear appropriate clothes An old Swedish saying says: “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes.“ When it’s hot out, wear light-colored, lightweight, loosefitting clothes and a wide-brimmed hat. Stay indoors midday During periods of extreme heat, the best time to run errands or be outdoors is before 10am or after 6pm, when the temperature tends to be cooler. Take it easy

.

Avoid exercise and strenuous activity, particularly outdoors, when it’s very hot out.

Keep an eye on each other during this hot weather and keep cool.

Watch the heat index When there’s a lot of moisture in their air (high humidity), the body’s ability to cool itself through sweating is impaired. The heat index factors humidity and temperature to approximate how the how the weather really feels. The current heat index can be found on all popular weather websites, and is also usually announced on local TV and radio weather reports during periods of warm weather. Seek air-conditioning Seniors whose houses aren’t airconditioned should consider finding an air-conditioned place to spend time during extreme heat. The shopping centre, library or movie theatre are all popular options. Seniors without convenient access to any air-conditioned place might consider a cool bath or shower and sitting in front of a fan afterwards. Know the warning signs Dizziness, nausea, headache, rapid heartbeat, chest pain, fainting and breathing problems are all warning signs that help should be sought immediately. And if you are lucky enough to live nearby one of our beautiful beaches, have a dip in the ocean early in the day before your temp rises or slip into a pool. If you know an elderly person, make sure they are managing the heat properly this summer.

A NEW study examining the impact of targeted manual treatment in relieving migraine pain has been welcomed by chiropractors. The study by a Western Australian physiotherapist involves targeted pressure being placed on the neck over a series of sessions in order to relieve the root cause of migraine pain. Scientific papers published in prestigious international journals over the past two decades have reported the value of chiropractic health care in treating migraine pain. The Victorian President of the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia, Dr Anthony Coxon, said chiropractors welcomed other professions recognising the effectiveness of chiropractic techniques. “Studies published in international scientific journals over the last two decades have reported on the effectiveness of chiropractic care in alleviating migraine pain and other health issues that arise from neck and back issues, Dr Coxon said. “This new study, highlighted in the media today, is welcome recognition of the value of chiropractic techniques from colleagues in another health profession." A paper published in the European Journal of Neurology in September 2016 was the latest in a series of papers to confirm the effectiveness of chiropractic health care in treating people with migraines. 5455 6946

NOOSA Today has, during the past year, taken the opportunity to meet and introduce many incredible organisations and everyday people. They come from all walks of life and in most cases are content to accept self-satisfaction as their major reward. They seek neither public acclaim, nor limelight; and as a result many have passed our way, relatively unnoticed. In some cases their achievement may not have occurred in the last calendar year, but because of their reserved nature and their contentment to live quietly (with their reward of selfsatisfaction), it was only during this year, that we were able to proudly bring their achievements to your attention. Be they from the world of hospitality, essential services, sport or humanitarian work; let us pause for a moment to acknowledge these organisations and people. In the humanitarian field, along with many others, we acknowledged Peter and Judy McDonald of Noosa for their work amongst the poor of Cambodia; then there were our people who provide Meals on Wheels for the needy, and of course the ever present RSL. Amongst those who work in the field of charity, the little known but highly respected group The Thursday Girls (now in their fifth year) and the Contender of the Codes Charity Boxing Night (eight years) run by Damien “Butch” Smith, have continued to succeed. A new group known as the The Support of the Codes threw the biggest beach party of the year to wrap up the annual Surf Festival. Its aim was to raise funds for sporting clubs and in facilities made available by the Surf Festival, and hosted and organised by the Noosa Surf Club, it was one of the success stories of the year. It is interesting to note that apart from the charity aspect of the two Code organisations, (boxing and beach party) they not only assist with funding, but also create an occasion that brings hundreds of athletes from all sports together. In the words of one young teenager, “These (events) are the only times we get a chance to meet each other and this makes Noosa a better community.” In the world of essential services our three surf clubs, Noosa Heads, Sunshine Beach and Peregian, have continued to maintain their record of no lives lost between the flags, while lifesavers on patrol. In supporting our lifesavers the 24 hour Emergency Response Group has also performed well, as have our lifeguards. Working as a fire officer Noosa's Rob Frey was this year acknowledged by Noosa Today for his outstanding work in support of firemen and women in the USA, as well as Australia. Despite being involved in a series of incidents which started back in 2010 (along with other Aussie fireman) Rob and all our firies have continued to go quietly about their duties. We respect Rob’s privacy but took the opportunity this year to acknowledge his work. Coast Guard Commander Alan Hall and his team were recognised for services rendered, regardless of weather and sea conditions. An interview with Senior Sargent Stephen McReight of the Noosa Police gave us a good opportunity to express our appreciation regarding the life and responsibilities that go with the duty of protecting our community. In the sporting arena of Noosa Shire, once again our athletes and their teams have been very successful. To review them is indeed matter of pride; but to name all, impossibility.

Possibly our top three clubs would have to be Dolphins Rugby Union team; premiers and undefeated for the season; Impact Armature Boxing Academy whose fighters won medals on the international and national level and the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club whose male and female Taplin relay teams, for the first time in its sporting history made the finals at the National Titles; in this the blue ribbon event. In the individual listings it was definitely the year of the ladies; perhaps the most outstanding being Noosa Heads Surf Club's Jordan Mercer. This young lady not only won the Nutri-Grain Ironwoman Series, but also for an incredible sixth time in a row, the International Molokia 2 Oahu Board Paddle in Hawaii. Taylah Robertson of the Impact Armature Boxing Academy won the Australian Golden Gloves, and then topped it by winning the Celtic Championship Belt, at the International Celtic Cup Tournament in Ireland. She then went on to win three gold medals at international tournaments in Poland In Masters International Competition, Julia Emblin put in an incredible performance to win the World Ladies Road Race (Cycling) Championship. To qualify she travelled to Japan to contest the Grand Fondo Classic which she won. Winning both gave Julia two of the biggest titles in World Road Race Cycling. With regard to the man and women on the street we have people such as Stephen Freckelton, paramedic, fire-service and lifesaving, Donald McKill, Rugby Union, lifesaving and charity (K.I.D.S.), Warick Redwood (Sunshine Beach S.L.S.C) Queensland Volunteer Lifesaver of the Year, Desiree Phillips Meals on Wheels, Val Hooper Little Athletics and Olive Donaldson R.S.L. worker. All are our people who have made a difference serving our community; and during the year have been proudly mentioned in the pages of our publication. In 1983 Noosa hosted the first ever NoosaTri. Now in 2016 we can proudly say that this event is the biggest of its kind in the world; starting with 180 competitors it has now topped 9000. Amongst the group of men who started it all were Garth Proud, Dave Power and Joe Gilbert; all our people. So big has it became, that Asics, the second biggest manufacturer of running shoes in the world, has produced a pair known as the Noosa Tri Athletic Shoe. These have been on the market for some 11 years and have sold millions throughout the world. But the point is that this year the event was the biggest ever and along with many others, we at Noosa Today, are proud to have been involved; and do what we could to ensure that it maintains its international reputation. Many of the paramedics, lifesavers, men and women that we have interviewed, played their part in the success of this event, and by doing so, have helped to promote our community to the world at large. To give you some indication as to the importance of this event promoting the Noosa name worldwide, on the walls of a shop in Andorra in the Pyrenees, you will see on display (for sale) the Noosa Tri Athletic Foot-ware. Who could ask for more? To all these people and their organisations, we at Noosa Today say thank you for the year and above all say - well done! noosatoday.com.au

JANUARY FORMER billionaire and alleged politician Clive Palmer announces that he has sold the former Palmer Coolum Resort to a consortium of Chinese companies for more than $100 billion, thereby solving his immediate financial problems. “I’m back,” he declared to a sparsely attended press conference. “Bigger and wider than ever.” Quizzed by Noosa Today’s crime and corruption correspondent as to how he was able to command such an enormous price for a rundown resort with virtually no garden dinosaurs, Mr Palmer said: “Well, of course, I had to throw in a few sweeteners, like Mount Coolum and the airport, but it’s all for the greater good of the Sunshine Coast.” FEBRUARY FOLLOWING more than 400,000 inquiries at the Hastings Street Information Centre over the holiday season about directions to the allegedly nudist beach at Alexandria Bay, Tourism Noosa puts its considerable weight behind the Sex Party and forces Noosa Council to reconsider its position on legalising the kitoptional cove. While Mayor Tony Wellington, who confessed privately to occasionally dropping the kit on a warm day while taking photos at A-Bay, promised to expedite new legislation, the Sex Party’s Robin Bristow said he didn’t wish to be left dangling. MARCH PICKING up on the momentum, Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing adds a nude surfing division for the first time, and is swamped with entries, particularly from the over 60s. “It’s not pretty, but it’s very popular,” says Festival spokesperson E Carrot. Unfortunately, the Nudies Nude Surf-Off has to be abandoned before the final when public outcry results in a police raid. APRIL NOOSA moves one step closer to becoming the motor scooter capital of the world when four-wheeled vehicles are banned from Hastings Street and surroundings. “This is a huge leap forward for a greener, trendier planet,” says scooter booster Cr Brian Stockwell in his farewell speech before resigning from council to open a Vespa dealership in the Junction.

Celebrity guests for the A-Bay opening, Gabby Reece and Laird Hamilton paddle back to Main Beach. MAY WORLD’S richest man Clive Palmer denies reports that parts of Noosa National Park were included in his sale of the Palmer Coolum Resort to Chinese interests. “I have no idea where that nonsensical story came from,” he tells a packed media conference. “Yes, there is a two-kilometre breakwater under construction from the tip of the Boiling Pot, but this is merely to create a safe anchorage for the floating casino in Laguna Bay. In no way will Queensland’s most popular park be affected.” JUNE THE first legally nude beach in Queensland is officially declared open at A-Bay. Chinese construction barges are used to ferry naked officials from a celebratory lunch at Sails out to the ribbon cutting and speech-making at the Bay. “This is an historic day for freedom and for Noosa,” says Sex Party supremo Robin Bristow. “It’s just a pity that the first chilly day of winter, when it’s harder to look your best, was chosen for the celebration.” JULY WITH less than a year to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, it is

As ambulances ferry the bruised and battered to hospital emergency wards, a police spokesperson says: “Apparently a group of Vespa riders walked into a cafe and ordered de-caf lattes, which was a bridge too far for the Honda boys, and who can blame them?” NOVEMBER THE Noosa Triathlon is called off due to lack of interest. “We’ve only received two million entries this year,” says a spokesperson for the

organisers. “We can’t be expected to pull this thing off with less than a billion dollars in the bank, so we’ll just head back to our headquarters in the Cayman Islands and try again next year.” DECEMBER IN a tip of the hat to the new, greener Noosa, the Hastings Street Christmas lights go on powered by pedal. Mayor Wellington takes the first 12-hour shift pedalling the generator set up on the nature strip, and reveals that councillors will each do six shifts a week until the holidays are over.

announced that the Welsh shotput team will do their pre-Games training in Noosa. “In shotputting circles, this will really put Noosa on the map,” a Tourism Noosa spokesperson tells a packed press conference. Pressed for more detail, the spokesperson concedes that Wales, at this point in time, does not have a shotput team, but if it did, Noosa was where it would come. AUGUST AN unseasonal Coral Sea low creates a six-metre swell in Noosa, wiping out stage one of the Wot de Phuq, Inc floating casino and resort in Laguna Bay. There are no reported deaths, but school children are given the day off so that they can retrieve gaming chips as they are washed into the beaches. SEPTEMBER HEARING there is a trip to Noosa in the offing, Welshman Taffy Mainchance forms the Shotputters Association of Wales and announces that a team of 20 finely-tuned athletes and barflies will arrive in Noosa early in 2018 to begin a four-month intensive training regime. The swell gods shine on Noosa By Hollie Harris IT seemed every man and his dog was out for a New Year's Eve surf at Noosa. There were over 100 surfers looking for a wave from Main Beach Noosa to Little Cove. With such a thick crowd in the water there were plenty of collisions and, of course, the usual bevvy of talent. The swell gods shined on the Noosa Points throughout the Christmas period and surfers took on the car park mission day after day. Even at 4.30am the line up and car parks were getting full with many of our locals catching a few before work and others just trying to get in early before the crowds.

Surfers enjoyed a week of south easterlies and some decent swell throughout the week leading up to Christmas. Professional surfers Dimity Stoyle and Georgia Fish were spotted at Main Beach Noosa sharing waves at sunset on Christmas Eve. Thomas ‘Doc’ Bexon and his son Arkie shared some quality father/son time together last week at First Point. Thomas, who owns Thomas Surfboards at Noosa, paddled on to some beauties with Arkie catching a free ride. Although the S’ly change has just hit the coast, there isn’t much to get excited about yet, however, he short range E/SE swell should bring some

two to three foot sets on the exposed beaches and some smaller sets around the points. The Coral Sea ridge is predicted to strengthen over the next few days, which may bring a little more swell for SE Queensland on Saturday and Sunday. The coast is looking like it will peak by Sunday with sets around 4 foot. The mornings will be the go to take advantage of the lighter winds and its looking like a fun weekend of waves. Fingers crossed! May the car parks be a-plenty, the good vibes contagious and 2017 bring consistent swells to Noosa!

Luke Summer with a nice giant trevally.

Jacks and macks aplenty By Jack Mangrove SUMMER is the time for jacks and macks! With the start of the New Year and plenty of holidaymakers enjoying their annual holidays there has never been a better time to fish the beautiful Noosa area. With quality mangrove jack, threadfin and jewfish all present in the Noosa River, anglers are spoilt for choice. Trolling hard body lures is a great way to tangle with a mangrove jack, there are some great lures on the market that will dive to two metres; perfect for trolling over the top of the rock bars from Johns Landing to the mouth of Lake Cootharaba, try casting the new Zman Shrimpz into snags as you work your way up and down the river this has also claimed some trophy fish. From the ski run up to the mouth of lake Cooroibah, soft plastic have been working a treat, good-sized flathead and school jew have been cruising the bottom, so make sure you have a heavy enough jig head to keep you on the bottom, set yourself up on the outgoing tide and start from up near the lake and simply drift your way back on the tide. Also while you are up there, try dropping in a few crab pots, make sure you have your details on your floats and on your pots, if you are tying off to a tree make sure your details are above the water line, remember to only keep the bucks and only four crab pots per person. Woods bays has been a go to area for most anglers early in the morning, with surface poppers

bagging some nice giant trevally and large tailor. The stretch of the river from Gympie Terrace, Munna Point and up into the Frying Pan has been producing good numbers of whiting, live worms pealed prawn and yabbies’ have been a some of the favoured baits. On the beach, we are seeing some nice flathead, fishing the gutters and deeper holes have seen quality-sized dart and whiting using live beach worms. Big strip baits has been working well for jewies, we have seen some sensational fish landed over the past couple of weeks. Fishing around the headlands, you can pretty much expect anything at this time of the year, from jewfish, small squire, sweetlip and maybe the odd spotted mackerel. On the offshore scene; the Pelagics are really starting to fire. These ferocious feeders taking a liking to trolled pilchards, as well as metal slugs and diving lures trolled at speed. Casting into the erupting bait schools is another exciting way to bag a Mackerel or tuna, with wahoo also crashing into lures and baits. Make sure you get out at first light with the action starting as soon as the sun comes up over the horizon. Even though the pelagic are on the chew the bottom is also very rewarding. Trout and nice-sized sweetlip have been on the bit in and around Sunshine reef, while quality cobia seem to be on most of the closer reefs. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! noosatoday.com.au
