The CFA fired up Shortly after, the CFA board was sacked and quickly replaced. “I do not have confidence in the ability of the board to end a dispute that has gone on for far too long and to deliver the reform that the Country Fire Authority needs to keep our community safe,“ Mr Merlino said in a statement at the Cranbourne CFA in June. Friday 17 June saw hundreds of CFA volunteers, along with Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop and Member for La Trobe Jason Wood march along Burwood Highway to protest outside of Mr Merlino’s office in Belgrave. Criticism was directed at several aspects of the agreement, including a ‘seven on the fire ground’ clause that would require seven paid firefighters to be dispatched to a fire before work could begin. Some news outlets reports Dandenong Ranges CFA members were threatening to resign if the EBA went ahead. Gembrook MP, Brad Battin criticised the Victorian Government, claiming it was part of a payback deal to “the union mates who got him elected in 2014”. “The decision could trigger massive changes in the CFA as we know it, including the resignation of thousands of volunteers,” he said. In October, news outlets reported the VFBV dropping Supreme Court action over the long-running dispute. The VFBC went to court to prevent the CFA from putting the EBA to a union vote, and said the deal would hurt volunteers. But the Federal Government introduced changes to the Fair Work Act, so the agreement cannot interfere with emergency service volunteers. In a visit to Montrose on Thursday, 5 January, Mr Merlino said he was “disappointed“ the dispute had “not been fully resolved“, and said the CFA and MFB’s agreements were before the Fair Work Commission. “I don’t have any timelines for you in terms of when these matters will be resolved."

THE BITTER dispute between the CFA and United Firefighters Union (UFU) dominated Mail news headlines in 2016. Dandenong Ranges firefighters were at risk of becoming disenfranchised over an ongoing industrial dispute. The dispute centred on the enterprise bargaining agreement (EBA), which was being argued by the UFU, the Victorian Government and the CFA. The EBA stipulates a pay deal that would affect the wages of career firefighters, working conditions and safely measures. The UFU demanded clauses that would affect the power balance between the UFU and the CFA, and between career (paid) and volunteer firefighters. Rejecting the UFU’s proposal, the CFA was concerned that the UFU would gain too much power over its operational decision-making processes. In response to the EBA, the Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV) said they did not get a fair say at the Fair Work Commission when it was considering the proposal. In June, Victoria’s Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett resigned from Cabinet while the dispute was in full force. The ‘Mail’ reported on Tuesday 14 June that Olinda CFA Captain Phil Skiller said the resignation of Ms Garrett was a huge blow. “We’re disappointed to hear the Minister has gone, we were very much behind what she believed in and we supported her,” Mr Skiller said. Premier Daniel Andrews said in a statement that Ms Garrett refused to support the Cabinet’s proposal to end the feud. Monbulk MP and Deputy Premier James Merlino was then announced as Ms Garrett’s replacement. Premier Andrews issued an ultimatum for the CFA board to accept the EBA before 5pm on Friday 10 June, but a Supreme Court injunction to postpone the signing was granted until Wednesday 22 June.

Makeover is set for reserve KALORAMA Memorial Reserve is getting a makeover and it’s going to happen mid this year. Plans for a new ball game and skate area are underway, as part of the second stage of a playground renewal project. Yarra Ranges Council said strong community support was expressed for an older children’s play area with a place to learn to skate and play ball games. Members of the community also expressed a desire for a place where local families could meet and socialise. The new and improved reserve will feature basketball and soccer markings and will include a tennis ‘hit up’ wall. The street skate elements will include a grind edge, handrail, ramp and down ledge as part of the new area. On the Yarra Ranges Council website, users commented their concerns regarding the plan. John Cullen said he thinks the reserve would require a small covered area with seating for a place to shelter from sun or rain. “Painting a skating oval on is better than defining basketball ball court markings,” Mr Cullen said.

Plan amended for Anzacs By Kath Gannaway THE Seville Recreation Reserve Master Plan will be amended to provide a space for the planned Seville War Memorial. While the plan by the Seville War Memorial Committee has always been to place the memorial near the water play park at the corner of Warburton Highway and Monbulk-Seville Road, there was no provision for it in the Master Plan approved in 2012. Yarra Ranges Council, at its last meeting for 2016, 13 December, unanimously agreed to amend the Master Plan to accommodate the memorial which will mark the war-time contributions of the people of Seville. The meeting heard that the
project will provide a contemporary interpretation of the town’s military history, featuring four of Seville’s significant former soldiers. It will also include WW1 and WW2 honour rolls and stories that capture the affect both wards had on local families and the town. The memorial is intended to provide an artistic illuminated sculptural installation to both highlight the significance of the town’s war-time efforts and provide a venue for hosting annual remembrance services and events. Previous memorials in Seville, the Seville Memorial Pool and the WW1 Avenue of Honour have been lost to the town over the years.

Briefly Vehicle ploughs into real estate shopfront A VEHICLE ploughed through the window of Emerald’s Bell Real Estate on Thursday 29 December. Emerald Police First Constable Tony Raven said the driver had failed to put the park brake on. Once the driver had left the vehicle and realised the car was rolling, they attempted to chase the car but were unable to stop the car from hitting the shop window. There were no injuries in this incident.

Take it easy on our roads, for safety By Jesse Graham AFTER a safe holiday period on Yarra Ranges roads, police are asking drivers to take it easy and avoid distractions, to help prevent serious crashes. Emerald Police First Constable Tony Raven said that police had been monitoring traffic from 16 December to 8 January as part of Operation Road Wise, keeping an eye out for dangerous driving behaviour, such as speeding and drink driving.
Though he said “a number” of drivers had been issued penalty notices for speeding or exceeding the legal blood alcohol limit, he said that, overall, the behaviour of people on the roads had been “relatively good”. “Fortunately, the conditions for the roads have been dry most of the time, so there haven’t been any fatalities - there’s been a lucky one or two, though,” he said. With the warmer weather, First
Const Raven said many drivers were parking illegally in parkland areas and car parks, sometimes blocking access for others. He warned residents to park in designated areas or risk a parking fine. First Const Raven said that drivers should not get complacent with dry roads and should avoid risk taking behaviour and distractions such as using mobile phones that can take driver’s eyes - and mind - away from driving.
“Just because the roads are relatively light doesn’t mean it’s okay to speed - it only takes a fraction of a second ... to cause a serious injury or a fatality,” he said. “It’s an important message, about the need to not use mobile phones for texting or receiving or making calls - a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction ... you can be looking down at a text for half a second and veer right and have a head-on. “It’s not pleasant.”
TWO men, from Seville and Warburton, will face court after being arrested by detectives for the theft of a ute on Christmas night. Police officers, posting on the Eyewatch - Yarra Ranges Police Service Area Facebook Page, said a 35-year-old Seville man and a 25-year-old Warburton man had been charged in relation to the theft of a LandCruiser dual cab ute, which was stolen from Lilydale on Christmas night. The men were charged after police raided a Seville property on 28 December, after receiving a tip-off from a resident. Stolen tools, drugs and items from the vehicle were discovered at the premises, and the Seville man was remanded in custody, to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on Monday 9 January.
Car burnt out in Lilydale POLICE are searching for information after a stolen car was found burnt out in Lilydale on New Year’s Day. Officers, posting on the Eyewatch - Yarra Ranges Police Service Area Facebook page - said a stolen Toyota Tarago was found burnt out and destroyed in Quarry Road, Lilydale, after 11am on 1 January. “A small black Suzuki sedan was seen following two possible suspects from the scene,” officers wrote. “Police wish to speak to this person.” Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Detective Leading Senior Constable McDonald at Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) on 9739 2401. 12335322-LB02-17

WHAT absolute, daft rubbish from Daniel Andrews! He has told Victorian Government workers to stop using the terms ‘husband’ and ‘wife’ in a new guide to communicating with the LGBTI community. This isn’t just creating unnecessary division, it’s also a frightening waste of taxpayers’ money when respect and commonsense is what’s needed. Victorians are being swamped by a violent crime wave, higher water costs and skyrocketing electricity bills but Daniel Andrews seems more focused on people using heteronormative terms such as ‘husband’ and ‘wife’. And I will be the first to admit when first hearing the word ‘heteronormative’ I had to Google it. I firmly believe people should be respectful to everyone regardless of gender, religion, ethnicity, sexuality and appearance, but once again Daniel Andrews is dividing people with his over the top ideological nonsense. Daniel Andrews should spend less time on his political correctness policing and more time supporting our real police officers tackling crime. Christen Fyffe MP, State Member for Evelyn.

Just no sign of summer in storms SUMMER was nowhere to be found on Thursday 29 December, as heavy downpours flooded parts of the Dandenong Ranges. Belgrave, Upwey and Tecoma were mainly impacted, each receiving about 64mm of rain. Yarra Ranges Council said crews worked over the weekend to unblock drains and clear excess water. Acting Municipal Emergency Manager at Yarra Ranges Council Lisa Keedle said the majority of flash flooding occurred as a result of the intense rainfall in such a short timeframe. “Most waterways and drain-
age infrastructure have difficulty coping with such high volumes of water, which causes flash floods,” she said. “The rain event served as an important reminder for residents to check that their insurance policy covers for extraordinary weather events, including damage from water or fire.” Yarra Ranges Council said they would ensure roads and drains were repaired as quickly as possible, and they had a team of inspectors assessing the damage to prioritise works. For more information, contact Yarra Ranges Council on mail@yarraranges.vic.gov.au or 1300 368 333.
In defence of DELWP THE Powelltown office of DELWP, along with our local CFA, has always been considered the defenders of our community. They must not be confused with the section of DELWP and Parks that is planning to turn Haining Farm into another Yellingbo: a ticking time bomb in the middle of Don Valley. It’s sad that the losers in this are the school children of the Victoria. Haining Farm was bequeathed to the people of Victoria by the visionary Sir John Reid. The purpose was to educate school children about the importance of agriculture. So please do not view our local DELWP as anything other than defenders of our community. Hills schools to be safer By Jodie Symonds YARRA Ranges schools will become bushfire ready this year following a $10 million program announced at Billanook Primary School in Montrose on Thursday 5 January. The program was announced by Monbulk MP James Merlino and Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley. Fire shelter areas at 200 government schools in high-risk areas across Victoria will be upgraded under the program. Twenty-two Yarra Ranges Primary Schools will be upgraded, including: Ferny Creek, Kallista, Noojee, Olinda, Sassafras, Sherbrooke Community School, Toolangi, Warburton, Emerald, Billanook, Wesburn, Yarra Junction, Millwarra-Warburton East Campus, Marysville, Menzies Creek, Mount Dandenong, Tecoma, Selby, Belgrave South, Hoddles Creek, Silvan and Upwey. Four Yarra Ranges Secondary Schools will also be upgraded, including: Upwey, Emerald, Monbulk and Healesville. Upgrades will also include vegetation removal, gutter cleaning, the installation of gutter guards, door and window shutters, water tanks and sprinklers. Fifty-one high-priority schools are currently being upgraded and will be completed by day one of term one. The remaining schools will have works done throughout the year. Mr Merlino said it is important to be vigilant following the devastating Black Saturday bushfires in 2009. “We’re making sure Victorian students living in high bushfire risk areas are safer at school with these vital bushfire safety upgrades,” he said.
Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley, Monbulk MP James Merlino and Billanook Primary School Principal Julie Legione. 163576 Picture: JODIE SYMONDS “Every Victorian government school has a place to shelter from bushfires as a last resort, and this program will make sure the shelters at 200 schools in the highest fire risk areas are even safer.
“You think about when kids return to school, kids will be back at school at the end of January, we’ve had a lot of wet weather over recent months, but that means a lot of growth and it means it’s going to be a long bushfire season.”
Mr Lapsley said it was important to be vigilant. “Obviously we’re in it, we said January/February would be the period, we’ve had an interesting Christmas period where we’ve had extremely
hot weather, we’ve followed it up with storms and flash flooding in the metro area ... however, it tells you we’re in an unstable environment,” Mr Lapsley said. For more information, visit www. schoolbuildings.vic.gov.au

A service was held at the Lilydale Memorial Park, where family members and friends shared memories of the time they got to spend with Mr Roberts. His large smile and sense of humour was repeatedly acknowledged. He had a passion for martial arts, and from the time he began, he knew he wanted to teach others who shared the same love. Hills Hub THE HILLS Hub development sought to unite numerous community services under the one roof, including health and counselling services, an arts space, local tourism promotion and more. It was to be located at the Emerald Library and Mechanics Halls precinct. The exiting hall was to be renovated and a new building constructed in the space occupied by the local Men’s Shed and the University of the Third Age (3UA). Burnham Beeches BURNHAM Beeches developers Shannon Bennett and Adam Garrisson denied the iconic site was in the hands of foreign investors, despite reports of a secret deal. On 12 November, The Age newspaper reported the celebrity chef Bennett had sold a majority stake in his hospitality business to a Singapore family for nearly $15 million, with the deal including a stake in the Burnham Beeches development. The article inspired a flurry of activity through social media channels, including on the Burnham Beeches Development Community Watch’s page on Facebook. The story also prompted a heated online exchange between Mr Bennett and concerned posters. However, Mr Garrisson told the Mail a deal has been struck, but it did not involve the freehold of Burnham Beeches.

Yarra Ranges Council worked together with the local community and other key stakeholders to develop a clear future direction for the former Olinda Golf Course site and its surrounds. Parks Victoria and Yarra Ranges Council invited the public to provide feedback on the final draft of the Olinda Precinct Plan in October last year. Many people have contributed their ideals and local knowledge to develop the draft plan. Following an initial opportunity to provide ideals in March, over 400 responses were received on the initial draft plan presented to the community in July 2016. Puffing Billy THROUGHOUT the federal election, funding promises for Puffing Billy were stronger than ever. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull visited Emerald Lake Park on Wednesday 25 May to announce a $20 million injection to boost tourism in the region. In a move that was designed to capitalise on a predicted Chinese tourist boom, the promise comprised of $10 million to widen the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, $6.5 million to upgrade Puffing Billy, $2.5 million for the Ridge Walk and $1 million to extend the Emerald/Cockatoo trail to Gembrook. The proposal included the restoration of Red Rattler trains, which would transport passengers from Melbourne central business district to the Belgrave start point of Puffing Billy. Kyoshi dies MOUNT Evelyn mourned the death of Kyoshi Andrew Roberts, and gathered at Edge Martial Arts to say their final goodbyes on Thursday 1 December. Mr Roberts, 53, passed away in his Lilydale home on Tuesday 22 November after a year-long battle with brain cancer.

Storms POWERFUL winds of up to 120km/h lashed across the Yarra Ranges on Sunday 9 October, and caused widespread damage to more than 1000 homes and left tens of thousands without electricity. The Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges copped the worst of the storm, according to AusNet Services’ corporate relations representative Hugo Armstrong. Yarra Ranges Shire chief executive officer, Glenn Patterson described the impact as “the largest emergency event our region had experienced since Black Saturday”; while AusNet Services managing director Nino Ficca said it was the region’s “worst storm event in eight years”. Yarra Ranges Councillors STREETON Ward councillor Noel Cliff was elected as Yarra Ranges Council’s mayor, and Walling Ward councillor Len Cox was elected as his deputy in the November election. The pair was elected to the top roles on Tuesday 8 November, one week after the formal announcement of the council election results. Six of last term’s Yarra Ranges councillors were re-elected to their posts and three new faces joined. The three new faces included former councillor and mayor, Tim Heenan unseated Billanook Ward’s Maria McCarthy with a 742 vote margin after preferences. Former councillor Richard Higgins was elected as the new councillor for the Chirnside Ward, beating incumbent Andrew Witlox by 1002, while Tony Stevenson was declared the winner of the Chandler Ward with a lead of more than 3500 votes over the next candidate. Raquel brings art to Emerald RAQUEL Carter lives and breathes art, and it inspired her to create the Hills Art Market in Emerald to showcase local talent. Organiser, creator, and an artist herself, Ms Carter said her background in the industry inspired the birth of the Hills Art Market. It will make its debut on Saturday 11 February and will run every second weekend. Ms Carter said the market
will be a place to be immersed in creative ideas and be inspired by a gathering of local artists. “(It) would be a lovely day out for the family,” Ms Carter said. The market will focus on supporting local visual arts and musicians in the community. “We encourage local musicians of the hills to apply to the Hills Art Market ... ” Ms Carter said. Hills Art Market has been
generously supported by Belgrave’s Puffing Billy Railway, the Eastern Dandenong Ranges Association and Cardinia Shire Council. A team of creative minds of different abilities will showcase their work at the market. There will be activities for kids including magic bubbles, a ‘play and paint’ space and face painting. The big kids won’t be left out either, as there will be live
music and the market will be jam-packed of artwork to view or buy. Ms Carter grew up in an artistic family - her mother was a painter, father a photographer and her grandmother started out as a potter, sculpture artist and illustrator. This led Ms Carter to The
National Art School in Sydney where she completed an Honours Degree in Fine Art. “The Hills Art Market is a space for the artists to commune, form networks and a place to exhibit their work and build on the art and culture of our communities, while also having an awesome day together swimming in beautiful
unique artwork,” Ms Carter said. “As my grandmother always said, ‘everyone’s artwork deserves to be seen and has something to offer the viewer’.” The Hills Art Market will be located on 1 Memorial Drive, Emerald. For more information, email info @ Hillsartmarket.com

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (M) Starring Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Donnie Yen
Looking great at the 2016 Fashions on the Field were Nicole Walter, Nicha Asana, Allissa Heffernan, Pictures: KATH GANNAWAY Liisa Cluning and Brooke Walter. 152370 along with the Melbourne and interstate races. Off the track there will be plenty of free activities for the kids including a jumping castle, an animal farm, pony rides, and Kelly Sports conducting lots of fun and games for the children. As a bonus the first 200 children through the gates will receive a great Country Racing summer kids’ pack with loads of goodies.
The Fashions On The Field competition is scheduled for later in the day with loads of fun to be had and great cash and prizes to be won, including a $500 travel voucher for the winner of the Lady of the Day category. Categories include Lady of the Day, Best Hat, Couple of the Day and a Junior Boys and Girls category. To pre-register check out the
club’s Facebook page or you can register on the day. All contestants who pre-register will receive a double pass to the Healesville Races. Racegoers are invited to pack a picnic or take advantage of the great food and drink available throughout the day. For more information on Healesville Races visit www. healesvilleraces.com.au.
ROGUE One: A Star Wars Story is LucasFilm and Disney’s thrilling (but not entirely successful) first foray into Star Wars spin-offs. The Empire is about to unleash a new superweapon, and a motley team of rebels, led by Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), must fight against the odds to bring the weapon’s plans to the resistance. Unlike The Force Awakens, which was a great film despite being somewhat derivative, Rogue One has more of an identity but also significant problems. The main characters - Jyn and intelligence officer Cassian (Diego Luna) - are flat and undergo very little development. The drama in the first act feels contrived, and the narrative flow clearly suffered in the editing room. Thankfully, the grim atmosphere, stunning production and strong, dedicated performances compensate for the generally shallow writing of the protagonists. Besides, some of the supporting characters steal the show. Alan Tudyk is hilarious as K2SO, a sardonic military droid, and Donnie Yen and Jiang Wen are a compelling duo as a blind Force-sensitive warrior and his stolid bodyguard. Rogue One is the biggest tonal shift in the Star Wars film franchise, styling itself as a serious, gritty war movie, and culminates in a truly spectacular battle sequence. It’s not as good as The Force Awakens, but Rogue One is still a worthy and exciting experiment. - Seth Lukas Hynes

“BARANI” ONCE IN A LIFETIME BUILT in the 1880s, this residence is one of the original miner’s cottages set on the old Emerald goldfields in the foothills of the charming Dandenong Ranges at Monbulk. The current owners of this quite amazing property known as “Barani“ have extensively renovated and extended the home, while faithfully maintaining its period integrity. They scoured the country in search of original materials to use in this transformation. Some of the architectural features include baltic lining and flooring throughout, pressed metal ceilings and dado, original leadlight windows in almost every room, as well as an impressive collection of antique doors, all with their own history and story to tell.
As it stands today the home flows over two storeys, with a stunning new kitchen featuring polished concrete benchtops and high quality stainless steel appliances and accessories. The master bedroom has an ensuite and walk-in robe and opens onto a formal lounge or parents’ retreat. A large open plan living space includes dining/meals area, family room with eight French doors opening on to a massive sun deck and return verandah. There are three generous bedrooms downstairs with a period bathroom complete with clawfoot bath and a spacious hallway connecting the two levels. For those of you who like to entertain, a real highlight of this property is the huge games/pool room featuring an amazing checkerboard painted
floor and wet bar. It has been designed to replicate an 1800s inner city saloon bar - and even has an original leadlight window from one! Other features include natural gas ducted heating, Coonara wood heater, high ceilings, light-filled living areas and a drying room. The surrounding property and garden features five timeless outbuildings including an office/ studio, a 130-year-old tack room/ sleep out, workshops and the most unique chook house in the hills! There are views of the mature cottage garden, massive 100-year-old oaks, flowing lawns, tree ferns and native bush from every window, seamlessly bringing the tranquility, peace and sounds of the outside right into

the home. Imagine waking to the warble of magpies or the chatter of king parrots and rosellas as this rural paradise bursts to life. All of this with a circular drive, space for eight cars and set perfectly on 6.6 acres. Barani offers a unique lifestyle. Close to schools, extensive sporting facilities and only minutes away from the charming Monbulk village, it is an ideal home to raise a family in a safe and caring community environment. As well as this and because of its charm, idyllic surroundings and proximity to the Yarra Valley and the CBD it also offers a host of “work from home“ and many other business opportunities.

Super over top guns By Steve Brown FTGDCA TOP guns the Knoxfield Knights defeated Knox Gardens in Round 8 of the Reeves Shield in a Twenty20 fixture, but not until the scores were deadlocked twice and two super overs were required to separate the teams. Knoxfield batted first, posting 6/146 with the in-form Tom Boxell contributing an unbeaten 57. In reply, Knox Gardens pair Jarrod Butcher (42) and Niraj DeSilva (37) almost got the Falcons over the line, but a run-out on the last ball of the innings tied the game at 146 apiece. A super over was then implemented and the result remained gridlocked until Knoxfield scored 6 runs from a second super over and grabbed the golden wicket to end a thriller. Eildon Park had the game under control against Mt Gate after the Morris brothers dominated with the willow. The association’s leading run-
scorer, Cody Morris, smashed 53 to take his tally to over 400 runs for the season. The Panthers won by 50 runs, despite a fine 48 from Mt Gate’s Sanitha De Mel. The Basin 4/113, without Jake Best due to Victorian Country X1 duties, knocked over second-placed Upper Gully 110 with 19 balls to spare. Danny Rundle top scored for the Bears with 25 but it was Steve Ryan who performed best with 20 and 2/17 for the winners. The Basin is now two wins out of the top four, with four matches to play. Monbulk won their first game of the season in a surprise victory over Belgrave by 54 runs in a match where 20 wickets fell for the day. Monbulk veteran Dave Williams, promoted for the shorter version, plundered 51 while leg-spinner Craig Broekhof took 4/14 in the best performance of the day. Belgrave’s chances of finals action
appear to be all over. Upwey-Tecoma moved to second place on the table after accounting for the luckless Ferntree Gully. Former Lysterfield players Steve Moore and Nick Whitty both scored half centuries for the Upwey Tigers. Bryce Galvin and Ryan Handley led from the front but it was not enough for the Gully who also miss a finals berth. Battle of the round in Decoite Shield saw Footballers too good for Lysterfield as Nick Bogar dominated with 3/17 then followed up with 38 not out with the bat, as his team chased a modest 71. Nothing went right for the Beavers, with the only shining light being the emergence of 14 year old off-spinner Jack Conroy who claimed 3/6. Conroy is an exciting young prospect with outstanding potential. Knoxfield polished off the highly fancied Johnson Park by 21 runs with Josh Hillyer the star with 68.
South Belgrave’s Ash Hart (44) saw his team home by 11 runs against Olinda with Cameron Smith taking 3/30, and Jarrod Parlby and Kyle Chandler helped St Johns Tecoma defeat Rowville in a close one. Reeves Shield Eildon Park 3/148 (B. Morris 38, C. Good knock to Williams in this double-header MONBULK CRICKET CRICKET was back at Monbulk on Saturday with the club’s first and second XIs playing a Twenty20 double-header at Belgrave. The New Year is looking good with both teams winning their first game for the season. This was a great reward for all players for their hard work before Christmas. David Williams made the most of his promotion to the firsts with a half century; while Musa Shirwan notched 38 in the firsts and a great spell by Craig Broekhof, taking 4/14 in the firsts. Seconds skipper Jason Simmonds was a stand-out with his match-winning 79. All five senior teams are back in action next Saturday, 14 January, so ensure all senior players train this week (Tuesday and Thursday) and communicate availabilities with the captains. All Monbulk junior teams start the following weekend (20-21 January) with team mangers to communicate training dates. The club also has a trip to the MCG coming up next week (Tuesday, 17 January) to watch the Melbourne Stars take on Brisbane Heat. This is for the whole club, juniors, seniors and families. Juniors can use their Stars membership for this match. Dress in your Monbulk Cricket Club gear and enjoy a great night. A special mention for Nancy Turpin and Jasmine Woodgate who played in the undefeated FTGDCA Under 12s girls rep team last week, the first girls ever do to so for Monbulk. Good luck to all of the other

JUST over a year after Emerald’s Anzac Walk and Anzac Place was officially unveiled to the town, the site has been recognised with a key award at the town’s PAVE Festival. The site neighbouring the Emerald RSL was officially opened by Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove in March last year and has since gone on to hold a special place in the hearts and minds of those who call the town home. With Anzac Day - one of the most significant days on the nation’s calendar - rapidly approaching, Emerald RSL president Peter Maloney said it was as if the project was “meant to be”. He choked back tears at the unveiling last year, showing just what the sacred place meant to him. And when he looks at it now, it’s clear that it’s become part of the fabric of the community. The RSL was recognised during the PAVE Festival for ‘The Planning and Construction of Anzac Walk and Anzac Place’ and Mr Maloney couldn’t be prouder. “The people of Emerald have recognised it, acknowledged it and said thankyou,” he said. “It’s great. It makes me feel really proud that the little embryo of an idea we once had just grew and took form.” Since becoming Emerald RSL president, it has been Mr Maloney’s goal to increase the profile of the club in the community. It’s now not just a club for returned servicemen and women, but one for the whole community. A Vietnam veteran, Mr Maloney has only been a part of the Emerald RSL for four years. Prior to that he refused to even step foot inside. “I wouldn’t go anywhere near an RSL for so long, but this is different,” he said. “It’s home.” The Emerald RSL will hold its Anzac Day dawn service from 5.30am at Anzac Place this Monday. It’s a day the whole hills community stands together as one. “It’s got a life of its own now, the dawn service,” Mr Maloney said. “It’s so powerful - it’s got a soul and you can feel it when you’re there. It’s just amazing.” Anzac Walk honours the 32 fallen First World War soldiers from the local area, with their names and war histories chronicled along an audio trail that follows the path of the town’s former Heroes Avenue. Mr Maloney said the next step was to do a similar thing in recognising those who fought in World War II and the Vietnam War.

Meanwhile, a parent of three Menzies Creek Primary School students has urged the community to support the storm-damaged school’s Family Festival on Saturday, 22 October. During the storm, a large tree fell and crushed one of the buildings and a playground, causing major damage. Mother Donna Arancibia has three children at the school – Heath, 12, Jocelyn, 10, and Fraser, 8. Incredibly, Ms Arancibia said portable buildings had already arrived at the school and there had been much work behind the scenes to ensure classes could continue. Although she said there were many items that couldn’t be easily replaced. “The sensory garden and totem poles, which the children painted, are now gone,” she said.
MANY Emerald retailers may have seen a fair bit of Tahlia Studham, 13, over recent months, after she bounced into many local shops, seeking assistance for her latest fund-raising project. As result of her persistence, Ms Studham successfully raised about $1200 for the Cancer Council - though it didn’t come without a little nagging Picture: ROB CAREW and a bit of hard work. MORE than 500 homes in Monbulk are still without power, more than one week after the violent storm that saw winds of up to 120km/h lash the region. According to the AusNet Services Outage Tracker, of the 647 homes still without power across Victoria – as of Monday, 17 October – most were in the Dandenong Ranges, with 21 homes still listed as awaiting connection in the Emerald to Cockatoo area. Though it’s a far cry from the tens of thousands of households originally affected, with 2200 customers remaining off-supply in the Yarra Ranges last Thursday, 13 October. Some estimates are that more than 1000 buildings were damaged, while more than 2000 trees were blown down. AusNet Services has apologised to those still without power, but insisted they were working diligently in rectifying the situation, after what they described as the most damaging storm to hit their network in more than eight years. In the wake of the devastation, Minister for Justice, Michael Keenan, and Victorian Minister for Emergency Services, James Merlino, on Sunday, 16 October, announced the activation of additional disaster assistance for Victorians affected by storms in the Yarra Ranges Council area. Minister Keenan said assistance was being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State ‘Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangement’ (NDRRA). Mr Merlino said that emergency reestablishment grants were now being made available to eligible households, in addition to the emergency relief assistance payments which are available to all storm-affected communities. “These grants provide assistance to people whose homes have been damaged so that they can clean-up their properties and replace damaged contents,” Mr Merlino said.

Steaming ahead CATCHING a heritage train from the city to Belgrave could become a reality, if La Trobe MP Jason Wood gets his way. The MP yesterday unveiled a multi-million dollar proposal which centres on transforming Puffing Billy into a ‘mega tourism destination’. Mr Wood visited Steamrail Victoria to discuss the restoration of the old Red Rattler trains with the Clark twins, Tom and Kevin, from the ElecRail Division of Steamrail Victoria on Tuesday 5 May. The proposal comprises four main elements: The restoration of the Red Rattler trains which would transport passengers from Melbourne central business district to the Belgrave start point of Puffing Billy. Building a $9 million Discovery Centre at Emerald Lake to display the rich history of the Puffing Billy and the hills. The creation of the Villages of Mount Dandenong Walk. Opening of the Bullen Bullen Indigenous Tours. Mr Wood said the hills area was already popular among day-trippers but more could be done to increase length of stay. “Combining these four projects will deliver a great benefit to La Trobe and to Victoria,” he said. “When the restoration of the Red Rattlers is complete, they can facilitate a connecting link from the CBD to Belgrave. “Combine this with the $9 million Discovery Centre ... and you have a huge incentive for tourists and Melbournians to come and explore the Dandenong Ranges.” Other media outlets have reported that Public Transport Victoria, Victrack and Metro have been consulted. Kevin Clark, manager at ElecRail Divison of Steamrail Victoria, said ElecRail was working collaboratively. “ElecRail is currently working co-operatively with Metro trains to again enable the preserved red rattler to operate a special excursion,” he said. “While fundamentally in good shape, the train needs a repaint following a vandal attack, and safety enhancements are also required.”

“It has instructions and tells you what to do as you’re helping the victim - whether to step back or do something else. “It’s quite unbelievable.” He said the first thing to do before accessing the defibrillator was to call triple-zero. “Basically any person can use them,” Mr Welsh said. “They may not be confident, but they can use them - it’s very userfriendly.” For more information, visit www. nhw.com.au/Eastern-Region/YarraRanges/Local-Areas
ing day in February, he was told some alarming statistics by the instructor. “The man who conducted the training said without early defibrillation, only about five per cent of people in cardiac arrest will pull through,” Mr Welsh said. “But it rises to 70 per cent with the use of a defibrillator.” If someone is in cardiac arrest, Mr Welsh said a person could simply look at the poster and see they need to go to either the pharmacy or the IGA to access the defibrillators. “From then, they take the defibrillator to the victim,” Mr Welsh said.
other two proposed wards. “If I was to stand again, it wouldn’t make a whole lot of difference for me,” he said. “Those wards together have a common interest and that makes a difference that doesn’t apply to the other new wards. “I think we have the better deal out of the three,” he said. The other Yarra Ranges Councillors including Cr Fiona McAllister, Cr Maria McCarthy and Cr Jason Callanan also said they disagreed with the planned restructure of the wards. The main issues raised between all the councillors we spoke with was the cost of campaigning increasing drastically and the lack of familiarity the councillors have with their new regions. Cr Jim Child was the only member of council we spoke to who had an overall positive outlook on the restructure despite making submissions against the change. “I’ll probably cop criticism from my fellow councillors but believe honestly we can work with both,” he said. The Mail contacted Minister for Local Government Natalie Hutchins’ office about whether the m, and whether she would consider the sentiments of councillors against the change. A spokesperson for the minister said a decision on the matter would be made in the “coming months”.
to the restructure. The main concerns raised by the councillors focused on the cost of campaigning to such large areas and working in communities they don’t that also don’t know them. Current Lyster Ward Councillor Mike Clarke said he would have preferred to continue with a nine-ward structure. “I don’t think it’s an ideal way to operate,” he said of the new system. “One can’t be across all aspects of such a large ward, especially in the new Streeton ward; it just doesn’t make sense.” Cr Clarke raised concerns over politically biased alliances being formed between the councillors in the new wards. “The cost for a candidate to stand will be tripled and that will lead to fewer candidates and parties funding three councillors. “I think at a council level, it’s better to be independent,” he said. Representative of the current Walling Ward Cr Len Cox shared Cr Clarke’s concerns about politically biased teams pushing their agenda at election time. “The difficulties inherent in the preferential system will be further enhanced,” Cr Cox said. Cr Noel Cliff of the current Streeton Ward said he also disagreed with the restructure but had a more positive response to the restructure compared to the

October 2015 on the introduction of two new defibrillators being placed around Seville and Wandin. After hearing about the Wandin defibrillators, Mr Welsh said it made sense to make them available in Mt Evelyn. “It’s really about raising awareness - because if people don’t know where they are they can’t use them,” he said. He said there hadn’t been any specific cases he knew of that made the cardiac arrest awareness closer to home, but said it was good for the community. Mr Welsh said at a defibrillator train-

Pharmacy, and the Mt Evelyn IGA. Chairman of the Mt Evelyn Neighbourhood Watch Committee, Geoff Welsh said putting posters around town was important when someone was in need of help while in cardiac arrest. “If someone needs help, having them (the defibrillators) is one thing, but knowing where to go is another,” Mr Welsh said. “How else would you know where they are otherwise?” Mr Welsh said the committee had been working on the posters for the past six months. YARRA Ranges councillors have expressed their doubts over a pending change of wards for this year’s election, with multicouncillor wards introduced for the first time in the shire. The Victorian Election Commission handed down the final proposal to restructure the wards that make up the Yarra Ranges Council area in November last year. The proposed change will see the current nine-ward structure shrunk to a three-ward structure with three councillors per ward. The planned new ward structure will combine the existing Streeton and Lyster wards with parts of the current Chandler and Walling wards to create a new Streeton Ward that covers the Dandenong Ranges. The proposed restructure to the wards of the Yarra Ranges Council has caused confusion regarding how the new council system will work best for communities. The Mail spoke with seven of the nine councillors last week, asking how they felt about the proposed shake-up to the ward structure and what it would mean or them and their communities. While none of the councillors were entirely in favour of the change, some were more positive than others in their reaction

Border dispute
By KATH GANNAWAY THE spectacular success of the inaugural Benvenuti Festival, held at Seville on Sunday, makes a repeat performance almost unavoidable. The diverse cultural melting pot that has evolved from the earliest days of settlement of the Yarra Valley was celebrated with a world of music, food, wine, poetry, craft and more. Looking out from Killara Estate Winery, against a backdrop of vineyards, orchards and mountains, the scene was set for everything the host group, The Yarra Valley Italian Cultural Group, had planned and hoped for. “Look at who we are. Look at where we come from. Look at what we have achieved together,” was how YVICG member Luigi Fotia spoke of the essence of the festival as the program came together over many months. The festival celebrated diversity of the Yarra Valley from the first Wurundjeri people to the waves of migrants who came to the valley to build new lives. The festival was officially opened by Casey MP Tony Smith with a Welcome to Country by Wurundjeri woman Mandy Nicholson. The Dutch influence was demonstrated with famous chainsaw artist Robby Bast carving out a sculpture of twin owls which was auctioned for the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal, while his parents, Joe and Maria, kept their poffertje skillets churning out hundreds of the tasty, mini-pancakes, on the deck. Australian bush poetry by Valley locals Jim Brown and Ruth Aldridge, the haunting sound of Scotland with Iain Townsley’s bagpipes, and the lively, rich Italian music of Sebastian Monaco on piano accordion, were among the world of music and word presented throughout the day. A cooking masterclass by TV presenter Tonia Todman, demonstrations of craft and an interactive show for the kids with ventriloquist and puppeteer, Lindi Jane, added to the family fun atmosphere. Another highlight was the launch of Mount Evelyn author, Anthony McAleer’s book “The Vagabond in the
