Why it takes these two to tango

Parks ‘need PSOs, CCTV’

“Once you dive in you just want to keep going deeper and deeper,” says Newtown’s Pam Javis of tango. And Pam would know - she and husband Richard have dived so deep into the steamy dance that they’ve spent almost three decades travelling to its birthplace, Argentina, for a full understanding of tango technique and culture. By Luke Voogt Commuters want improved security at local train stations after police identified North Geelong Station as Victoria’s second worst for crimes against parked cars. Angry train users called for more PSO patrols, additional security cameras and a tougher legal system as police conducted information caravans at North Geelong Station. “Put some PSOs out there and maybe more cameras,” Belinda Lyons demanded under a police social media post on station car park crime .

“If the judges weren’t so lenient to let them off the first time then maybe we wouldn’t have such a big problem.” Other commenters said locking vehicles and hiding valuables inside was failing to prevent criminals stealing number plates or vandalising cars. “The problem being is that the crooks will still smash windows to see what they can find, as they know it will be hidden in glove boxes or under seats,” Stuart Trevena posted.

Cats coach Chris Scott has returned to the helm after the club granted him compassionate leave following the death of younger brother Ben in November. The 37-year-old died on 23 November from anaphylactic shock due to an unusual nut allergy. Cats midfielder Scott Selwood said everyone at the club was thrilled with their coach’s return after a month away. “It just shows the class of the footy club when you give people like that the time off that they need,” Selwood said. “Scotty’s been brilliant since he’s been back, he’s been really lively and he’s coaching really well.” Powerful forward Tom Hawkins was also back in training on Tuesday for the first time since undergoing off-season knee surgery. Hawkins went under the knife in October to have a piece of his meniscus trimmed after suffering a small tear during the 2016 season. “Tom’s going well and he joined back in with the group this week, so he’s pretty much in full training now,” Selwood said. Hawkins trained lightly at Simonds Stadium as the Cats players honed their skills in front of fans at an open training session. The one-hour session focused on giving players the chance to work on areas of their game they needed to improve. The Cats face Hawthorn at University of Tasmania Stadium in Launceston in their opening JLT Community Series clash on 17 February. Selwood was enjoying his first proper preseason at Geelong after being limited by an ankle injury last year. “We had a team meeting yesterday and we talked about there being only 30 days to go before we get our first real hit-out,” Selwood said. “We’ve worked since the start of December on a lot of things but we won’t know how we’re going until we get into the games.”

As usual, a council campaign will be at community cost and, in the case of Surf Coast residents, possibly comfort as well. Surf Coast Shire this week forewarned of a tougher future for householders under its 25 per cent by 2020 Renewable Energy Taskforce. A media statement on the taskforce suggested that the shire’s target of a 25 per cent cut in energy consumption wouldn’t be limited to council activities. Not by a long shot. The statement said domestic consumers accounted for 57 per cent of Surf Coast energy use. No prizes for guessing, then, who the shire thinks should make the biggest cuts in usage. This was reinforced in the statement’s concluding recommendation that local homes stay either side of traditional room temperature, with thermostats set at 18C to 20C in winter and 24C to 26C in summer. So just a little colder in winter, and a little hotter in summer. Just like the thermostats are set in the shire’s ‘Taj Mahal’ office headquarters - not! Arsonists are usually underground types for fear of apprehension but apparently local firebugs take the description literally. Well, that’s according to a coastal paper that recently rehashed a Crime Stoppers press release under the headline, ‘Authorities need help to dowse arson’. Of course to ‘dowse’ is to search for something underground, usually water with the help of a divining instrument. In the case of subterranean arson, perhaps a thermometer would be the tool of choice! Then again, the authorities could simply ‘douse’ illegal fires in the traditional sense with lots of water.

PIZZA THE ACTION: Half-eaten evidence in Double Take’s comment-for-capricciosa scandal.

Double Take has managed to subvert the concept of cash-for-comment - with delicious results! Following last week’s reference to Pizzas With Attitude winning Menulog’s Best Pizza in Geelong Summer 2016, Indy staff members were delighted when four boxes of the aforementioned product arrived steaming hot at lunchtime on Tuesday. All staff except Double Take, that is, who had taken the day off on annual leave. To paraphrase Homer Simpson: pizza dough! Anyway, the office freeloaders gave greasy thumbs up to the much-fancied freebies. Well worth the column centimetres, apparently. So much for cash-for-comment - Double Take’s invented comment-for-capricciosa! But why stop at pizza? Or takeaway even? If a small reference in Geelong’s highest circulating newspaper brings forth a plunder of

pizza, maybe some of the city’s finest restaurateurs might respond in kind. Mmmm, comment-for-a-la-carte. So, now that we all know the rules, Double Take will set the meatball rolling: Le Parisien. Table for 10, thanks Jean Paul. And three cheers for the people of northern Geelong, whose sense of community was again on display in last week’s Indy. The front-page lead told of donations pouring in to support a young family after they lost everything in a Norlane house fire. A Facebook link to the story drew plenty of interest, and some insightful response. “And to the ones that bag Norlane and Corio,” commented Margaret Farrell under the link, “this is what most of Norlane and Corio are like”. Too true, Margaret, too true. Now over to you, Newtown and Highton!

Geelong MP Christine Couzens said the complaints reaffirmed the importance of the Government’s overhaul.

“It was agreed the animal would live outside in a large cage and not be allowed free range inside the house.” But the tenant broke the deal, the landlord claimed. “Some months later I discovered the tenants were keeping six ferrets, eight cats and two dogs inside the house. “VCAT (Victorian Civil Administrative Tribunal) rules prevented me from evicting the tenant when they refused my request to remove the animals.” The landlord had to wait until the lease expired to remove the tenant. “I discovered the entire carpeted surfaces were

By Luke Voogt Ferrets trashing a Geelong rental property was among 131 local tenancy complaints lodged with Consumer Affairs Victoria in 2016, according to new data. State Government shared examples of complaints with the Indy this week as it planned to overhaul the Residential Tenancies Act. In one anonymous complaint a landlord said their tenant’s horde of pets destroyed a previously immaculate property. The complainant, who described themself as an “animal lover”, said they had allowed the tenant to keep a ferret as a pet.

“We need to make sure that we’re striking a fair balance between the rights of landlords and the rights of renters.” The Government was seeking feedback from the public on options including restricting rental increases to once per year and banning “unreasonable” no pet clauses in tenancy agreements. Ms Couzens said that as renter numbers continued to grow it was vital that the community had a say in shaping the new laws. “If they have an experience to share, I’d encourage local renters and landlords to be a part of the conversation.”

Jan Juc man dies in car tree smash

MONKEY BUSINESS: Dhyey Sheh's stunning picture of a monkey in the forest is among numerous striking images featuring in Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2016, an international exhibition at Geelong's National Wool Museum from Sunday to 14 May.

A 60-year-old Jan Juc man has died after his car crashed into a tree at Bellbrae. Police believed that he was in a sedan travelling south on Vickerys Rd just after 1.40pm Tuesday before it left the road and struck a tree. The driver was the only occupant of the vehicle. He died at the scene, police said. Geelong Highway Patrol Sergeant Darren Murphy said police had identified the cause of the Bellbrae crash. Suspicious circumstances were not involved, he said. The death brought Victoria’s road toll to 10, up on eight at the same time in 2016. Two people have already died on local roads this year. On 11 January a 26-year-old Whittington died when his vehicle crashed into a tree beside Bacchus Marsh Road at Anakie. Police suspected fatigue was involved because the man crashed on his way to work about 4am.

Illuminated sculptures capturing “the character and spirit of rural people will welcome travellers to Winchelsea, Surf Coast Shire has announced. The Dusk and Dawn artworks of Benjamin Storch and Matthew Harding would be installed at Winchelsea’s east and west entries, the shire said. A Winchelsea entrance sculpture steering committee chose Dawn and Dusk from a shortlist of three submissions for the installation. “After visiting the area and speaking with community members, the artists were inspired by our natural landscape, particularly the Barwon River corridor and wildlife, committee chair and councillor Heather Wellington said. “They describe their artwork as representing

a connection between the natural environment and the nature of community. It’s a perfect fit for Winchelsea. Cr Carol McGregor, who was also on the steering committee, said the sculptures would be lit at night. “It adds another element to the works, she said. The shire said an artist concept statement described the installation as “large-scale and dynamic, capturing “the character and spirit of people who live and work in rural communities. A display of the three short-listed entries attracted comments from “more than 50 people, Cr McGregor said. “We had some fantastic feedback.

“One member of the public described Dusk and Dawn as graceful and elegant, while another person believes that it looks to the future and is inspiring.â€? Also on the steering committee were “local artists, a sculptor, VicRoads representatives and ‌ council officersâ€?, the shire said. “The panel has come to an excellent decision that I believe, the community of Winchelsea will be happy with for generations to come,â€? said committee member and Lorne Sculpture Biennale founder Graeme Wilkie. Work on the sculptures would begin after an artist was appointed to build them, the shire said.

There’s more in store for Geelong.

Learning to break cycle By Luke Voogt

1232141-ACM25-16

Nothing is more important for Norlane’s David Irvine than giving his four children the best future he can. “I want them to have an equal education to everyone else,” the full-time dad told the Indy this week. “It’s what drives my day-to-day life.” His family is one of 340 in Geelong which The Smith Family sponsors through its Learning for Life program. David has been a single dad since 2013 and said he didn’t want his children to grow up disadvantaged like he did. “(The Smith Family) are trying to break the cycle,” he said. The 33-year-old said he would struggle to buy his eldest daughter Kimberley’s uniform and textbooks without the charity’s support. According Smith Family figures it costs more than $2400 a year for school essentials, and that’s just for a primary school student. “It’s getting more expensive - especially now that the government has dropped the school kid bonus,” David said. “It’s quite hard for me as a single dad to get a job during school hours as it’s not the social norm.” But David said raising his four children was no challenge, despite the financial pressure. “They’re such bright kids and they’re wellbehaved.” His children were brimming with excitement as they spoke to the Indy about returning to school while at the park with their dad. “I just can’t until I start grade five,” Katelyn (10) said. Gordon (11) and Laura (8) were keen to get stuck into reading and writing, while Kimberley couldn’t wait to learn German. CADEL EVANS GREAT OCEAN ROAD RACE SATURDAY 28 AND SUNDAY 29 JANUARY 2017 The City of Greater Geelong is proudly hosting the 2017 Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.

Please be aware that there may be some tail riders still on the road.

GENERAL EVENT TRAFFIC ADVICE Latrobe Terrace (Princes Hwy) in Geelong and the Geelong Ring Road will remain open at all times during the weekend to ensure north/south traffic movements though the City of Greater Geelong are maintained. Rolling Road Closures will be used to stage the Elite Races. If you are travelling along or across the course as a rolling road closure comes through: • You will be stopped by the lead police vehicle and asked to park in a safe area on the side of the road. You will have to wait for the race to pass through; once the race has passed the police tail car will inform you that it is safe to move on.

• It is estimated that you will have to wait for no longer than 15-20 minutes. The rolling road closure will be supported by some fixed road closures to assist in keeping the course roads free of traffic when the race is coming through. Temporary Road Closures All major intersections remain open, other than when the race passes by. For a full listing of traffic alterations go to www.cadelevansgreatoceanroadrace.com.au or visit www.eventsgeelong.com.au and search for Cadel. Alternatively download the Geelong City App and look under road closures.

FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Parking along the courses will be restricted in many areas to ensure the roads are clear for the races. Parking restrictions will come into effect earlier on race days than the stated race times, so please look for any advisory signage prior to parking.

Residents and Businesses located on the course roads have been sent detailed advice regarding access arrangements during the event. If you are located on the course roads and have not received that advice, please call the event traffic help line on 0497 816 467.

Emergency access is a priority and will always take precedence over the event.

Public transport bus timetables have been altered across the weekend to avoid the course roads. Revised public transport timetables are available from www.ptv.vic.gov.au/events

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times during the events via existing footpaths. Where roads are closed for short periods, access across roads will be via marshalled course crossing points. Due to the large volume of cyclists on the roads during the event you should take extra care when crossing the course roads.

They’re deep in love with tango By Luke Voogt Pam and Richard Jarvis’s passionate love affair with tango has seen the couple dance the steamy milongas of downtown Buenos Aires for almost three decades. “Once you dive in you just want to keep going deeper and deeper,” Pam said. The Newtown couple fell in love with the dance in 1989 thanks Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla, who revolutionised the tango movement in the late ’80s. “It was his music that brought a whole generation of young people back to tango,” Pam said. “It was gritty, amazing music - full of jazz and street noise.” The music inspired them to travel to raucous upstairs dance halls, known as milongas, in the poorer suburbs of the Argentine capital with just a Spanish phrasebook to guide them. “As you climb up the music gets louder,” Pam said. “You walk into this room and there are 100 people dancing, it’s quite amazing.” Eye contact and a simple nod across the room would see her in the arms of a local. “That will tell the guy yes I’m interested in dancing,” the 66-year-old said. “Then we go into the embrace - up until that point we haven’t spoken a word. At the first break you have a chance to have a chat with someone you’ve danced quite intimately with.” “It’s like a physical dialogue but very respectful.” She and her 72-year-old husband return regularly to Argentina to mix it with the locals. Pam’s favourite milonga, which bordered a local swimming pool, has since shut down. “The locals tore up the floorboards and took

them home as souvenirs,” Pam said. When the couple moved to Geelong in 2009, they decided “it was time to get something started”. “I was involved in serving the meals at Christ Church,” Pam said. At the time Australia’s tango scene was mostly competitive, she added. “We had an opportunity to reinvent the wheel a bit and establish a lovely community based group.” The couple have been running weekly classes at the church since. “Something happens to people when they tango - they go into a different state,” she said. “People take it and each time they create something different.” Pam survived cancer in 2008 after six weeks of chemotherapy and two surgeries but it’s done little to stop her dancing. And law consultant Richard is still light on his feet despite rupturing three disks in his spine eight years ago. “If you can walk you can dance,” Pam said. “All you need is a wooden floor, a hall and a chance to play music.” The couple ran a trial project with Alzheimer’s Australia (Geelong) last year and plan a similar trial next year. “Every time people dance they remember something beautiful in their past,” Pam said. “We were extremely pleased with how much people remembered and what they were able to do physically.” Pam said most in her group were older than 60. “In Buenos Aires they have teenagers and 80-year-olds who dance at the same place. Here it’s a bit more difficult to get younger people involved.” 9 GEELONG INDY Friday, 20 January, 2017

Landlord won’t confirm he’s pulling rug on city store

Trader: I’m closing - again By Luke Voogt Central Geelong’s colourful Rug Clearance Centre could actually close after years of liquidation and closing-down promotions, according to its operator. “I’m hanging in by a thread. I’m in arreas with my rent,” George Emtsis said from behind a desk littered with unpaid bills. “If I’m going I don’t want to leave it in a mess.” Mr Emtsis said he had missed two months’ rent. “The sales are slow because of online shopping and the parking in the city makes it very hard for people to pick up rugs. The store’s future was up to the landlord who so far had been “great”, Mr Emtsis said. But the landlord failed to comment when the Indy contacted his office this week. Mr Emtsis vowed to battle until the end and called on shoppers to support his business. “It’s up to the public - if they help me out I’m happy to continue. I like people and I like putting a smile on their faces.” Mr Emtsis said people ridiculing his latest closing-down sale on Facebook were confusing his store with another, now-closed CBD shop. “That mob used to give me a bad reputation. Year after year at winter time they put ads in all the papers of Geelong saying, ‘Last weekend’.” But Mr Emtsis admitted to throwing previous own closing-down sales since opening in 1999. “I did it a couple times when they were beautifying Ryrie and Moorabool Sts about five years ago.” Some residents have described the store, on the corner of Ryrie and Moorabool Sts, as an eyesore that “must hold a record” for the longest closing-down sale. Others questioned whether it was actually closing, or expressed sympathy for “a decent bloke just trying to earn a living and keep his business afloat”.

Call to scrap day, MP backs values

HANGING BY A THREAD: It may be the final closing down sale for George Emtsis. 164022

Australia Day should be scrapped in Geelong for offending indigenous people, according to a regular political candidate. “Celebrating the arrival of the First Fleet” was an “offence to aboriginal people”, said Socialist Alliance’s Sue Bull. “We see the so-called Australia Day as Invasion Day and believe it upsets a number of aboriginal people. “It’s not that you want to deny your history but I think there’s a difference between celebration and acceptance.” Ms Bull praised Fremantle City Council for moving its Australia Day to 28 January this year. “They’ve gotten rid of their fireworks and that type of thing because it offends the indigenous community.” Ms Bull said her party members would attend Australia Day rallies in Melbourne. “They’re all run by the aboriginal community.” Labor Corio MP Richard Marles defended Australia Day as about “the values that make us the country we are”. “I’ll spend the day with my family and some friends. I don’t think it’s a day for scoring political points.” Local indigenous woman Anette Xiberras said Australia Day was like Anzac Day for aborigines. It was a day to remember indigenous people who fought for their freedom, she said. But Ms Xiberras said she was not offended that people celebrated Australia Day.

Cost denies sick child vital drugs By Luke Voogt Government haggling over a new wonder drug is putting Ocean Grove youngster Brody McPherson at risk of irreversible lung damage, according his mother Kate. The three-year-old has been on 40 tablets a day since being diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) at four weeks of age. He is one of 30 children in Australia under six years old with a rare form of the disease. “We can’t have a day without thinking about CF,” Kate said. “It’s just a constant battle - you don’t get a moment off.” The “brave, cheeky” three-year-old endures three nebuliser treatments a day and has been hospitalised for weeks at a time, Kate said. But a new wonder drug - Kalydeco - could add decades to Brody’s life and prevent irreversible lung damage. “It would change our lives completely,” Kate said. “It would just give him a chance at being a normal kid.” The drug works by treating certain mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene, which account for 5 per cent of CF cases. “It’s absolutely amazing,” Kate said. “All the drugs he’s on now just treat the symptoms of the disease. This drug actually treats the cause.” “Forty tablets a day is a lot for a three-yearold to be taking, when it could all come down to Kalydeco morning and night.” The only problem: the Federal Government and Vertex Pharmaceuticals, the company which produces the drug, are still haggling over the price. “It’s been proven to be safe and effective,” Kate said. “It’s literally down to dollars and cents.” The Government recently approved the drug for children over the age of six via the Pharma-

Hooked up on monogamy Geelong males are among Australia’s most-faithful to their partners, according to a dating website. The local men ranked ninth on a national survey of male attitudes toward monogamy, EliteSingles said. Geelong also rated number one in Victoria, ahead of Melbourne in 10th. But New South Wales out-rated Victoria as the state with the most-monogamous male populations, the website said. “Our research team wanted to find out if Aussie men still believe in monogamy - the answer is a resounding, ‘Yes’,” said the site’s Alex Rennie.

“We collated anonymous data from 13,000 male users and looked at how strongly they agreed with the statement: I believe monogamy is essential in a relationship. “We then pinpointed the top 10 cities based on where these men live. It turns out that Geelong’s menfolk are among Australia’s most monogamous.” The website’s resident psychologist, Salama Marine, said the results should encourage Geelong women’s “faith in love”. “Unfortunately, many women have been cheated on in the past which has made them doubt the existence of men who believe in monogamy. “Being cheated on is horrible,” Ms Marine said.

“Unsurprisingly, it makes many people question the fidelity of men in general. “But they shouldn’t allow it to let them lose faith in love. “While many women have been unlucky enough to have been cheated on by someone they trusted, there are actually still plenty of men out there who do value monogamy and want to build a lasting and loving relationship. This study demonstrates that.” The top 10 cities in descending order for male attitudes in support of monogamy were: Dubbo, Bunbury, Cairns, Coffs Harbour, Albury, Orange, Port Macquarie, Surfers Paradise, Geelong; and Melbourne.

Bringing up Great Kids

12337205-ACM03-17

An airborne car ploughed into three houses in Clifton Springs during a single-car crash on Saturday morning. Police believe the car was travelling along Bay Shore Road when it lost control and struck a house about 7.35am. The car hit the neighbouring house before coming to rest in the front of a third. The crash trapped the male driver and single occupant of the car for some time. Emergency services freed the man and treated him on the scene before flying him to The Alfred with serious injuries where he was kept in a critical but stable condition. The crash caused minor damage to the first house and extensively damaged the front of the second house. No-one was home at any of the houses when the incident occurred. Geelong Highway Patrol investigated the crash to determine the “exact circumstances surrounding” it. Letters Andrews surrending $5b opportunity The Andrews Government must do everything in its power to stop Geelong losing the $5 billion dollar Land 400 combat vehicle project to South Australia. Dan Andrews has been asleep at the wheel while the Weatherill Government has pledged tens of millions of dollars of taxpayer assistance to secure the lucrative contract to build 225 nextgeneration armed combat vehicles. While Mr Andrews has been busy fighting our CFA volunteers, South Australia has cleverly put together an attractive investment defence sector package, leaving Geelong likely to miss out altogether. Victoria recently lost several significant Federal Government infrastructure projects to other states, so it would be a real slap in the face for the Geelong community if South Australia, already successful with a $50 billion submarine contract, secured this one, too. Geelong has the skilled workforce at the ready and a manufacturing industry with a proven track record but unfortunately the Andrews Government is too lazy, too disinterested or too unprepared to compete with South Australia on this important project. The coalition’s federal and state MPs are fighting hard with city leaders to help Geelong win the contract but unfortunately a late scramble by Dan Andrews might be all too late. Having only just staffed the much-heralded procurement office in Geelong, we are way behind the eight ball. I urge the Andrews Government to do everything in its power to secure the project for Geelong, which would be a huge economic and strategic boost. Simon Ramsay MP Member for Western Victoria

Studies a tour de force of rorting During the forthcoming investigation into the rorting of public monies by politicians, I hope the publicly financed overseas study tours of cheese, wines, solar panels etcetera that they take with partners, mainly during the European summer, are also examined for their huge expense. What is their benefit? Albert Dennis Herne Hill

Bushfires CO2-neutral Alan Barron (Letters, 13 January) wrote wondering how much CO2 a recent hay bale fire generated. But instead of answering it he leapt straight to how futile CO2 mitigation is because there are lots of fires, so obviously it must dwarf anthropogenic sources. One can drive from one end of the country to the other and not come across a bushfire but they will see lots of cars, towns and cities all dissipating the energy from coal and oil. And they do it day in day out, year after year, with ever-increasing demand, so much so that total CO2 emissions from fossil fuels is now about 30 times greater than from bushfires. Not only that, bushfires are considered carbon-neutral since the vegetation regenerates, reusing the CO2, so they don’t add anything significant to greenhouse gases for the future.

Buckets & Bouquets Bouquets to the lovely customers of The Shop, which my three children set up for an afternoon during school holidays. You all helped make fun memories that will last a long time. Whether you just had a look or purchased their wares, it was very much appreciated. School Holiday Fun, East Geelong Bouquets to ITZ Computers & iPhone Repairs’ Andrews for fixing my son’s computer at short notice. Thanks for being so kind - you saved the day. Jo, Belmont Bouquets to a lovely lady who handed in my purse at ALDI recently. It contained all the usual: driving licence, cash, credit cards et cetera. It was a huge relief to get it back. I wish you a wonderful, healthy and happy 2017. Very Grateful, Highton Bouquets to a pair of families who found and comforted our dog after fireworks led him to push past me at the front door and flee. We were so relieved to find him safely with you all. He’s receiving a new identity tag after losing the last one. Owners, Torquay

That was just lazy, thought bubble rubbish from Mr Barron. Oh well, the more things change the more they stay the same. Welcome to 2017. Jukka Tuisku Barwon Heads

Winters of discontent Let me begin by admitting that I have poor circulation. But the last two winters in this city were still been the coldest I had ever experienced. I freely admit, too, that I am no longer in the bloom of my youth but were this reality and circulatory problems the primary causes of the great, numbing, coldness I felt over the past winter and spring? I suspect that bitterly cold winds, and their consequent wind-chill factor might have had something to do with the discomfort that I and many others experienced this year and last year. I would be interested in both professional and personal comment. Michael J Gamble Belmont

Arise, Australian monarch Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull spoke again last month of another republic referendum. If the presidency of Barack Obama is anything to go on, then a president is the last thing Australia needs. He seems hell-bent on ruining America rather than elevating its fortunes. Australian politicians of all persuasions continuously pass the buck, playing the blame game relentlessly while accusing the other side of playing politics. What else would politicians do?

Bouquets to St Jude. Thank you so much. Grateful, Belmont Buckets to a selfish loser who created a long traffic jam of motorists waiting for him and his family to take a beach car park at Torquay. He ignored the honks while waiting for people in wetsuits to change, store their boards and leave in their vehicle, which took ages. Next Car In Line, Newtown Buckets to Geelong waterfront revellers for their cigarette butt decorations over summer, especially during the festive season. The council staff does a good job cleaning it up but the butts shouldn’t be litter in the first place. Butt out in a bin or ashtray, not on our footpaths and lawns. Ruin Our Walks, Geelong

What Australia needs is not a president but a monarch of great character and good heart, which are so lacking in many of our elected numbskulls; a person who is happy to have the buck stop with them. We need one person to adjudicate matters of national importance as our font of justice. Our courts are abysmal. True justice is rare as hens' teeth and financially beyond the means of most ordinary people. Let’s have a referendum instead to ask the people whether they want a king or queen. I would much prefer the right person in that role rather than someone like Malcolm Turnbull or Bill Shorten as prime ministers. Gary Oraniuk Geelong West

The costs of our ‘assault budget’ It must be blatantly obvious that the Middle East crisis leaves behind oppression and no winners. We should not even be fighting someone else’s war in a foreign land. We entered a treaty 70 years ago, so we lost our freedom to say, ‘No, the US has changed over the years’. We have not even cleaned up the mess left after the last big war. The Iron Curtain is as strong as it was under Stalin, even though a third of Russia is in Europe. All our wars in the past 60 years were for no win-win results. We were aggressors by hostile means. The costs are unbelievable. One year’s war expense would put a smile on the Treasurer's face, secure our triple A rating and a $100m surplus without fiddling around with superannuation. Instead, for the past 15 years we have kept 100,000 people in work in the US building our

But when an MP comments that we couldn’t build a canoe, I have no doubt our parliament has an acute shortage of intellect. Then there’s the “level playing field”, which doesn’t hold water. Our fruit canneries had to go to make room for fruit from California. We should send trade missions abroad to make friends and bring the army back to fight on the home front against drugs, bushfires and water shortages. We don’t have a defence budget, we have an assault budget. Egbert Ruseler South Geelong

Welfare needs integrity, not rorters It is disappointing that some people abuse the welfare system for payments to which they are not entitled. Others inadvertently report improperly to Centrelink, consequently also receiving overpayments. The Federal Government is doing everything it can to ensure integrity in the welfare system. Our main method for doing this is to compare incomes self-reported to Centrelink with incomes determined by the tax office. We ask recipients to explain any discrepancies. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been recouped for the taxpayer through this process. Recent media stories have told of people who say they were unfairly targeted. No-one receives an initial request-for-information letter unless a discrepancy has been detected. We daily identify cases of people failing to declare they had a job or under-reporting their earnings from the job, and consequently receiving thousands of dollars more welfare than to which they are entitled, but Labor is calling for us to stop asking these people to explain. We will continue refining the system but ensuring integrity in welfare payments. Alan Tudge MP Federal Minister for Human Services

Different but the same Each year on Australia Day we come together to celebrate living and being part of this multicultural nation, expanding and thriving on accepting people of all different races, cultures and backgrounds. However, this year I ask readers to look at multiculturalism from a different angle. While multiculturalism describes the values and beliefs we hold close, the term can be divisive in nature. Multiculturalism recognises the differences in background, skin colour and lifestyle and asks us to accept them. Instead of multiculturalism, a term which focuses on the differences of our country and our people, I implore readers to focus more on common humanity. We all have it but no one celebrates what we have in common, instead focussing on our differences. The key to acceptance and harmony is both finding similarities and accepting differences. Neither is more important and having one without the other creates imbalances that grow into feelings of being disconnected, unwelcome and isolated. FINALLY FRIDAY

Walter’s power to perform Local music stalwart Denis Walter is showing no signs of slowing down after 46 years of performing. “In my industry, you’ll be retired against your will,” he said. The 62-year-old will return to Geelong RSL for a two-part performance on Saturday night. “Last time I was there, it was just a fantastic night,” he said. “It was a sell-out which was great. For a show like Saturday night, it’s really good fun.” Walter will perform the power ballets which have become his repertoire for the first part of the show. For the second half, Walter will delve into “Songs of the Southern Land”, including some Aussie tracks which “didn’t get the recognition they deserve”. He will belt out songs like Brain Cadd’s Ginger Man, Richard Clapton’s Girls on the Avenue and Cold Chisel’s Forever Now. “They’re just great Australian hits,” he said. “People expect the big ballets, but there’s a lot more to the show than that. They’ll see a different side of me.” Walter said Geelong gigs used to be much more nerve-racking than playing for larger crowds in Melbourne and Sydney. “I would look out and see familiar faces which was an odd sensation,” he said. But after nearly half a century in the music business, it is something he has long learnt to deal with. The Geelong grandfather said he hoped to perform as much music as possible this year while working as an afternoon talkback host in Melbourne. “If I get time, I’ll be doing more of that. I’m doing quite a few shows around at different spots throughout the year.”

Rib-tickling film Aussie cult comedy classic Malcolm will be onscreen at Little Creatures’ first ever outdoor cinema night this month. Promoter Baden Parker-Brown said the night was “all about bringing people together to share a story over a cold beer”. “What better way to enjoy the end of summer, than watching some classic Aussie films under the stars.” The 1986 film tells the story of socially-awkward tram driver Malcolm, whose modest innercity cottage is fitted with a variety of remarkable gadgets. Malcolm’s boss (Bud Tingwell) sacks him when he discovers he has built a cut-down tram during work time using work materials. With Malcolm’s mother dead and no other income, a local shop-owner advises him to take in a boarder, Frank (John Hargreaves) who brings his girlfriend Judith (Lindy Davies). Later revealed as petty criminals, Frank and Jude team up with the technical genius Malcolm to stage a robbery. Malcolm builds a getaway car which splits into two independently powered halves, which they use to elude police after Frank steals some cash from a bank customer. The trio embark on high-tech, high-speed robberies turning the city of Melbourne on its head. Doors to the cinema open at 7.30pm and screenings start after sunset around 8.30pm. Further details and the full schedule can be viewed via: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/furphy-outdoor-cinema-tickets-30447378930

LOCAL ICON: Denis Walter will perform at Geelong RSL Saturday Walter said he loved the immediacy of talkback radio, where he could go from interviewing an international artist to a breaking news story in minutes. He has released 16 albums in his widely varied career and worked as a news presenter in re-

gional Victoria for 16 years. Walter is a patron for Cystic Fibrosis Australia, and an ambassador for the Austin Hospital and Make A Wish Foundation. “I’ve been able to all the things I’ve set out to do,” he said.

CALAMITY: Malcolm’s getaway car splits in two.

Mister Maker gets crafty By Luke Voogt British children’s performer Mister Maker will bring his crafty ways to Geelong when he performs at Costa Hall next Saturday. The performance will be the first time in the city for Mister Maker, also known as Phil Galagher, as he tours Australia for the fourth time. “It’s really exciting,” he told the Indy from Brisbane this week. “We’re getting to go to some new places like Frankston and Geelong.” Galagher has travelled the world following the show’s UK success, filming in locations like South Africa and Brazil. “I can feel like I live mostly out of a suitcase,” he said. “I feel lucky to be able to travel so much with my job.” Twenty years ago the then 19-year-old started as a sport reporter for his local BBC radio station after finishing university. His desire to break into television saw him land an internship at England’s Disney Channel, running errands like picking up coffee for presenters. “I was able to work on their preschool channel and really see what I wanted to do,” the 39-yearold said. “I started having little cameo roles bringing the post to presenters and doing some puppeteering.” About 10 years ago, the BBC commissioned Mister Maker: a colourful art and craft enthusiast. “When the casting call went out, I looked at the brief and thought this really sounds like me,” he said. “The character hadn’t really been fully developed, so I was really able to put my own spin on things.” The show took off, with Gallagher receiving a

It’s ‘much ado’ about the Bard Shakespeare will return at sunset to the Bellarine next month with Essential Theatre staging one of the Bard’s most loved works, Much Ado About Nothing. The play is a witty, romantic and timeless tale of two pairs of lovers and the people who try to rip them apart. “Under the setting sun, Leura Park Estate provides a stunning backdrop for this colourful and charming comedy,” said estate’s Lyndsay Sharp. Ms Sharp said historically tickets for the event sold out fast for the Shakespeare in the Vines series. Much Ado About Nothing at Leura Park Estate will run for two performances on 10 and 11 February. The show starts at 7pm, with gates opening at 5pm. After the show, patrons will be able to meet the cast and enjoy live music until late. Limited tickets cost $45 per person and are available via GPAC at www.gpac.org.au or 5225 1200.

CREATIVITY: British children’s performer “Mister Maker” in action. BAFTA Children’s Award nomination and landing several stage gigs. The most rewarding part of the show was receiving letters from parents who enjoyed it as “family time”, Gallagher said. “We really feel proud that the show has fans in so many different age groups. As soon as the show is finished you can still be creative and go off and make things.”

“We want to do it in a way where the kids don’t realise they are having so much fun because they are learning something.” Gallagher said Australian crowds were among his favourite to perform for live. “They’re so loud and so receptive to what we do. We’ve been lucky to have such a great reaction.”

SATURDAY EXTREME GOLFING: Aaron Cox and Matt Silk take on the Hundred Hole Hike.

Big hitters take to Hundred Hole “Extreme golf ” returns to the Bellarine today (Friday) to raise money for people with an acquired brain injury (ABI). For the past four years the Karingal Hundred Hole Hike has raised money for the organisation’s ABI Clubhouse. In 2017, another group of determined, dedicated hikers will take on the extreme golfing challenge to play 100 holes in one day, all on foot. “The Karingal Hundred Hole Hike brings together a group of ordinary golfers, who hit the course at sunrise, to undertake an extraordinary task for a great cause,” Karingal Chief Executive Officer, Mike McKinstry, said. Local bands will welcome the hikers back after their mammoth day in the event’s concert: Music to a Tee.

Rockwiz’s Brian Nankervis will host this year’s line-up, which includes Heartache State, featuring Surf Coast favourite Nick Barker, young Geelong group Hey Mammoth and The Carers Choir. “The Hundred Hole Hike has become a great event for golfers and music lovers,” Mr McKinstry said. “Come along, show your support and have a great night out.” Promoters promised fabulous raffle and auction prizes on offer for the day. The public can donate at www.karingal.org.au/ foundation. Music to a Tee begins at 5pm tonight at 13th Beach Golf Links with tickets available at the door.

EVEN the spices are homemade at Tandoori Cuisine and Bar Indian Restaurant. It’s all part of business owner Sandeep ’Sandy’ Kaushal’s dream to have “the best restaurant in Geelong”. Modern with an Indian touch, Sandy has adorned the walls with Indian wooden delights and a large handcrafted mirror. He previously ran a successful Indian restaurant in Ocean Grove but decided to launch Tandoori Cuisine and Bar Indian Restaurant to give more people an opportunity to try the cuisine. “My head chef, Ayub Khokhar, has 20 years’ experience and has even worked overseas – he’s very popular and has a great reputation. “He won the 2015 Geelong Father of the Year award too.”

And within just one month, Sandy has already reached the same level his previous business had. “Everybody is coming here saying they have never tasted such good food,” Sandy says. “Our prices are very competitive; the menu ranges from $2 to $25.” Sandy recommends trying the Tandoori Platter, Butter Chicken and Chicken Tikka Masala. Tandoori Cuisine and Bar Indian Restaurant seats up to 90, offers pick up options and delivers free for orders within a 10 kilometre radius. Sandy recommends booking a reservation if planning to dine in over the weekends. Tandoori Cuisine and Bar Indian Restaurant is open from noon-10pm, seven days a week at 17 Pakington Street, Geelong West, phone 5229 0077.

AUSTRALIA DAY

BACK TO SCHOOL

Classes keep the brain stimulated As old age approaches nothing is more important than keeping the “neurons firing” according to University of the Third Age (U3A) lecturer Di Cray. “As you get older people assume you’re happy to sit down and not do anything,” she says. “But you have to keep your brain active.” Di’s classes delve into the lives of Australia’s historic women, from convicts to suffragettes. “It’s just the pleasure of imparting knowledge to people,” she says. “There really are some amazing women in Australia’s history and they don’t get the credit they deserve.” One of her favourites is Mary Reiby: “the Lady on the $20 note”. Reiby received a death sentence for stealing a horse in England as a 12-year-old orphan, but was instead transported to Australia. She went from disguising herself as a boy while imprisoned in a barge on the Thames, to become one of Australia’s greatest single-mother entrepreneurs. Di is one of 15 volunteers who teach at U3A Corio Bay, which will move to Bell Post Hill on 31 January. The organisation has educated Geelong residents over 55 for four years. “We have about 100 members predominantly from north of Barwon River,” Di says. “We would very much like to increase that.” The former nurse and CEO of a spinal injury care provider has taken a number of U3A courses herself. “I’ve done philosophy, economics and I’ve brushed up my computers,” she says.

MERRY-GO-ROUND: Kids have a ball of a time on Australia Day. 163967

Park has free fun and entertainment Learning maintains vital connections. And it’s not just academics at U3A. “If you’re not into economics or philosophy, come along and learn how to play Mahjong or learn quilting,” Di says. U3A’s members, the eldest of which is 92, prove it’s never too late to learn, says Di. “The thing that puts people off is they think it’s like going back to school but it’s not. We have lots of fun and there’s a real camaraderie which is great.” The organisation’s courses can even help stave off conditions like Alzheimer’s, Di says. “This will at least keep that at bay.” See advertisement for more information.

Celebrate Australia Day at Rippleside Park with over 30 free activities and community displays for families and children to enjoy. For over 55 years this event has been brought to you by the Geelong Australia Day Committee with the support of community groups and volunteers. The free activities will include: amusement rides, train rides, jumping castles, face painting, animal nursery and much more. Stage entertainment includes Geelong’s own Dazzling Dan The Magic Man along with the

Scottish dancers and Geelong Memorial Brass Band and much more. Community displays will include: police vehicles, Girl Guide and Scout display and activities, CFA vehicles, Geelong Military Re-enactment Group Display and Vintage cars, just to name a few. To make the day more friendly and easy for families, there is adequate free parking provided on the site. DANCE MUSIC DRAMA

SWEET SOUNDS: Bay City Strings brings the passion. 163988

Inspiring young musicians Bay City Strings was formed in 1989 by passionate local music teachers who felt that Geelong was in great need of a community youth orchestra. The organisation was developed to give young people an opportunity to experience the joy of playing music together in a fun environment. In addition, Bay City Strings sought to foster ensemble skills, and to nurture and inspire young musicians to achieve performance excellence. From its inception to the present day, Bay City Strings gives all young strings players equal access to orchestral performance opportunities. Bay City Strings fills the gap where a school-based string program does not exist. It also complements the existing music programs of other schools. Bay City Strings remains strong and continues to grow, drawing young musicians from all over

the Geelong region. Many students go on to become professional musicians leading successful music careers. Bay City Strings is a not-for-profit, community-run youth music organisation that provides an opportunity for local string students aged between 5-18 years to play in an orchestra. The organisation currently comprises three ensembles: Aurora Strings (Beginner Level), Bossa Nova (Intermediate Level), and Chamber Strings (Advanced Level). Rehearsals are held every Friday during the school term from 4.30-6pm at St Joseph’s College, Newtown. We hold a concert each term and also perform at various festivals and community events. New members are always welcome to join at any stage during the year.

Build life skills There is no denying that drama classes are HEAPS of fun but they also allow students to build vital skills that will last them a lifetime. “The most rewarding thing about running Mooregrace Acting Studios is watching our students develop and grow,” said studio director Sarah Grace. “It’s so great to hear feedback from parents about improvements in their schooling, whether it be their reading, public speaking, social or leadership skills. We get a real kick out of it.” The two hour weekly classes at Mooregrace Acting Studios are divided into two parts. In the improvisation hour, students participate in fun, fast paced activities that challenge them to think on their feet, solve problems, work as a team and get creative. During the second hour, it is lights, camera, action, as students learn and perform scenes in front of the camera. “It really is a fabulous way for kids and teens to express themselves, develop strong friendships and most importantly have fun,” Sarah said. Sarah has had her fair share of experience in the entertainment industry. Most recently she played the role of ‘Bridget’ in Channel 7’s hit drama ‘Winners and Losers’. “Working in film and TV helps us to guide young actors at our studio,” Sarah said. “We can give them advice on agents and cast-

Westcoast Calisthenics continues to go from strength to strength as a family-oriented club that fosters a love of performing in all of its students. Each class covers a variety of styles of dance, gymnastics and singing all while teaching students teamwork, deportment, flexibility and strength. “Calisthenics is a great sport to become involved with as classes are so varied there is something for every student and wonderful friendships are made with teammates,” Erin Hollands, coach of Tinies and Seniors sections, said. Westcoast continues to focus on offering opportunities to its students to improve their calisthenics skills and develop coaching skills in the older sections. Over the last few years they have introduced a Mini Solo program to allow one on one coaching for younger students and encourage them to develop their skills, as well as offering flex and strength classes at the beginning of the year. They recently had 16 students pass their pupil skills exams with great results - including a top score of 98.5 out of 100. This year, Westcoast have two students who have been selected to represent Victoria at the National Calisthenics Championships in Sydney in July and they are welcoming some additional coaches to their team to support their growth in numbers of their younger sections. George passes on his passion to keep Volvos keeping on A lifetime of Volvo knowledge is being passed along to the new breed of automotive technician at Geelong West Automotive. Low-impact collisions typical in shopping centre car parks are annoying to say the least. Add to this the fact that people rarely own up to damaging other people’s cars. It has been noticed that drivers are often scared to back-up any further due to very limited vision. These are the occasions where reverse sensors are very welcome. Bumper Master fits reversing sensors to help customers overcome fears of backing into objects or even pedestrians. Reversing sensors help prevent damage to owners’ cars as well as the vehicles of neighbours and other motorists. They can also help when backing out of tight garages and past narrow gateposts. Bumper Master can also help owners improve the appearance of bumpers when selling vehicles. Bumpers are the first part of any car to incur damage – and first impressions are important when trying to sell. All Bumper Master repairs come with a no-questions-asked warranty to give customers peace of mind. Best of all, most bumper repairs are done for less than the cost of insurance excesses. Located behind VicRoads at 3 Dowsett St, South Geelong, Bumper Master has proven experience in providing an alternative repair service to the bumper regions of any car. Owners wanting to improve the resale value of their cars should phone Bumper Master on 5221 0138.

Star-studded cyclists at race Locals are set for a cycling spectacle this month with world-class riders confirming for the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race. Two-time Paris-Nice winner and Australia’s leading Grand Tour contender Richie Porte will spearhead Evans’ former team, BMC Racing. Porte, who rode in the inaugural addition of the race, was excited to make his return after missing out last year. “The Great Ocean Road presents challenges and a unique style of racing, which will make this competition exciting for both the riders and fans,” Porte said. Porte will ride in the same field as Swiss star Danilo Wyss and newly crowned Australian national champion Miles Scotson. All eyes will be on Scotson after he won the recent Cycling Australia Road National Championships in just the first week of his professional career. The 174km UCI Elite WorldTour race will be a fierce contest when Team Sky (GBR) sets out to defend the title claimed by Peter Kennaugh in 2016. Classics specialists Ian Stannard and Luke Rowe will add firepower for a strong team which boasts three-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome. Big names lining up from Orica-Scott including Lombardia winner, Esteban Chaves, Caleb Ewen and Australia’s leading one-day rider and dual national champion Simon Gerrans. Gerran hopes to continue his strong start to the 2017 season, after he broke a collar bone in last year’s Tour de France. “It’s not often I get the chance to race a one-day race in Australia, so I’m looking forward to that,” he said. “I also like the circuit of the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, it’s one that can suit a rider like myself, so it should be a great race.” Defending champion Amada Spratt and Katrin Garfoot for Orica-Scott will set out to reclaim the Deakin University elite women’s team

WORLD CLASS: Riders take on the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race in 2016. classifcation, while German rider Lisa Brennauer (Canyon-Sram) will be one to watch. Riders will follow one of the most spectacular courses in international cycling, starting at Gee-

long’s waterfront, passing through Evans’ home town Barwon Heads, Bells Beach and Moriac. The closing stages can expect to see riders hit almost 85km/h as the peloton reaches Queens

Park during the last weekend of January. For the Elite Men, three testing laps of the city will sap the legs before the waterfront finish line beckons.

SPORT Captain’s knock for Cats LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club is staring down the barrel of yet another defeat when it resumes against Dandenong tomorrow. The Cats batted first last week, and were brilliantly led by skipper Eammon Vines at the top of the order, the ever improving youngster making a belligerent 100 from 218 balls. As has been the case all season though, too much was left to too few, with five of the top seven batsmen falling for six runs or less. Brenton McDonald was the only other batsman to offer support, with a well-made 64, including a dozen boundaries. Despite a handy 22 not out from Nathan Alexander at number 10, the side could only manage 242. That left 18 overs for Geelong to bowl on day one, but any hopes of a wicket or two to help them get back into it went unrealised, as Dandenong cruised to stumps at 0/64. It’s hard to see a class outfit like Dandenong

letting this one slip, meaning Vines and his charges could be in for a long day chasing leather. In the Geelong Cricket Association, a number of games were affected by the inclement weather that rolled through the region on Friday, with covers blowing off and rain drenching some of the wickets. One of those wickets was at Queens Park where the match of the round between Newtown and Chilwell and Grovedale was scheduled. With the wicket deemed unplayable at the scheduled start time, the players waited around, before the umpires agreed that the game would begin at 3pm. Curiously, Newtown and Chilwell won the toss and chose to bat on a wicket that was clearly going to favour the bowling side, and, as expected, they paid the price, battling to survive and eventually going to stumps at 9/104. For Grovedale, Glen Talarico cashed in on the bowler friendly conditions, taking 5/11 from eight overs, while Gareth Yelland continued his good form with two wickets. While the Two Blues will still be able to bat on tomorrow, the damage has been done, and Grove-

dale look set to consolidate top spot on the ladder, and consign Newtown and Chilwell to their third loss in four games. In the division two match of the round involving Thomson and Marshall at Godfrey Street oval, rain again played a big part, with play completely abandoned for the day without a ball being bowled. With the game reverting to a one dayer tomorrow, Thomson will benefit from the return of Jayden Hicks who was unavailable last Saturday, a fact that didn’t go unnoticed by Marshall as they pushed for a start last week. For Marshall, Kal Dubbledam will take over as captain for the remainder of the season, following the shock announcement that Ben Spencer has stood down from the role, with the all-rounder citing work load and a desire to concentrate on his own form as the catalyst for the decision. With most of the other sides around them on the ladder well placed in their games, both sides will need to be at the absolute best tomorrow if they want to avoid a very untimely slip up in their run in to the finals.

Robinson waves goodbye to American in world qualifier Jan Juc’s India Robinson opened her 2017 World Surf League Australasian Junior Qualifying Series (JQS) campaign with a win at Bells Beach on Sunday. Robinson surfed four-foot waves to victory over San Diego’s Alyssa Spencer. “Winning at home means heaps to me,” Robinson said. “Getting chaired up the beach at Bells Beach by my brother and Dad was one of the highlights of my career so far.” Robinson used her local knowledge to beat the American in the final, which went right down to the wire. She took the lead on the siren with her last wave to lock in a heat total of 11.10 points, ahead of Spencer’s 10.75. “It was cool to have Alyssa in the final coming from the USA,” Robinson said. “She rips and is fun to surf against.” “Being able to have heats at Bells is really special and allows me to get heaps of experience out here for future events.” Spencer had the highest single wave of the final, an 8.00 point ride, but could not find a big enough back up to take the win.

KING KONG: Michael Moore with his monster kingfish.

Moore snares his king trophy ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Anglers made the most of ideal summer conditions over the past week to discover a wide mix of species on offer. Kingfish were high on the agenda for most anglers, with The Rip holding specimens to 12kg. Trolling, jigging or using freshly caught squid worked well. Plenty of small-model kingies to 65cm were taken just off Point Lonsdale by anglers trolling occy skirts with a squid strip attached or casting lures around schools of surface-feeding fish. Trellys Geelong’s Michael Moore made an early start Tuesday morning out from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads where he began fishing a slimy mackerel of about 1kg as a live bait. Michael’s rod soon started peeling line, leading to a 40-minute fight that ended with Michael boating a trophy kingfish of 21.8kg - one of the region’s best in a long time. Back inside Port Philip Bay, whiting schooled in good numbers from the Queenscliff grass beds right though to St Leonards. The most productive depth was 5m to 6m, with tenderised squid or pippie the best baits. Drifting in the Point Lonsdale Bight proved worthwhile for some impressively sized squid. Queenscliff Harbour was exceptional for large silver trevally to 45cm on soft plastics cast around slack tide. Clifton Springs was the go-to location for a mixed bag. Snapper kept anglers busy at the channel, with the average size around 5kg. The nearby spoil grounds held good numbers of pinkies, flathead and pike to almost 1m. Casting soft plastics was the most effective tactic, with three-inch plastics working well. Flathead were a common capture in Corio Bay, with some large models to 50cm taken on lure and bait. Land-based anglers banked nice-sized pinkie snapper right from Limeburner’s boat ramp to St Helens. Anglers casting metal lures from local beaches landed Australian salmon to 2.5kg. The western district continued producing kingfish and southern bluefin tuna in close. Daniel Baden and I fished off Portland on Sunday morning where we caught an 18kg tuna while casing Sea Iron Pelacus lures in 10m to 15m. Freshwater fishos continued enjoying the region’s newest hot spot, Stony Creek Reservoir. Both species of trout were taken again, along with reasonably sized redfin. Casting lures with enough weight to cover a lengthy distance was ideal, along with baits such as Powerbait and mudeye. The Barwon River gave up good numbers of redfin for anglers casting lures while walking the bank around Queen’s Park. The average size was a little small but the reddies sure made up for with their numbers. Outside the region, Lake Eildon was worth the drive, with Murray cod taking lures on the cast or troll along. Yellowbelly were also taken. 31 GEELONG INDY Friday, 20 January, 2017
