Mount Evelyn Tennis Club thought it had aced an Australian Open promotional campaign, when drawing World No.1 Andy Murray as its representative in a competition to win $5000 for the club. However, the excitement turned to heartbreak as the crowd favourite lost his match in four sets to Germany’s Mischa Zverev on Sunday 22 January. Incredibly, Zverev was ranked 50 places below the superstar Murray in the world rankings. If Murray had trumped the Australian Open, the local club would have been awarded the funds to go towards improving club facilities and tennis courts. Last year, tennis clubs nationwide offered to host a Free Tennis Day, which earned them elegibility to enter into a ballot and secure a top player to represent them during the Grand Slam event. The Mount Evelyn Tennis Club gained the honour after organising a free open day for this Sunday 29 January, the last day of the Australian Open. After Novak Djokovic lost to Denis Istomin in the second round, Murray had been a hot favourite to win his first Australian Open. Murray Smith, committee member of the Mount Evelyn Tennis Club, said after finding out that Murray was representing them, the whole clubhouse erupted with excitement. “Everyone was pretty pumped about it - we have a lot of young keen tennis players and when we heard that Andy was representing us we were pretty excited,“ he said. “I mean it doesn’t get any better than the world’s best." Despite Murray’s loss, the club is still encouraging the public to turn out to the upcoming Open Day. The event aims to encourage more people to get involved in their local clubs and the sport. Mr Smith said the event would be fun for the whole family. “We want to encourage people to come along to have a look at the local club and what we’ve got on offer,” Murray said.

Yellow arrows plague bush By Peter Douglas A mystery group with an interest in orienteering has “defiled” a popular walking trail in the Birdsland bushland area of Belgrave South. Although a clean-up operation has now begun, frustrations exist within the community after hundreds of yellow arrows were spray-painted throughout the scenic landscape. This included on trees, rocks and fences. The brightly coloured arrows have proved difficult to remove, with attempts made to restore the natural setting through painting over the arrows with grey paint. Long-time walker in the area, and nearby resident, Glenda Wise, said there was no need for such senseless destruction. “This is of concern to huge numbers of people who enjoy the natural bush solitude - only to have had it marred by someone with no care for the mess they’ve left behind,” she said. “There is one old tree I’ve been

watching ... which I have photographed many times over the years, of its degradation in various lights ... and it has been ruined with yellow painted arrows. “Whoever is responsible should be made to go back and remove it.” Ms Wise said permits should be required for orienteering groups to use the space. She said tags, or simply garden stakes, would be a better alternative, if people wanted to use the area for orienteering. The Birdsland area is a bushland reserve with a long and rich history. The land was once a farming property. The Bird family donated the land to the public to try to preserve the area and protect it from urban development. At the time of print, ‘The Mail’ believes Melbourne Water is responsible for management of the land. A media request has been sent to Melbourne Water to uncover if any action will be taken, though no response had been received at deadline.

AUSTRALIA DAY WEEKEND PLANT

In brief More sport on the way PLANS for a new ball game and skate area at Kalorama Reserve are underway, as part of the second stage of a playground renewal project. According to Yarra Ranges Council, strong community support was expressed for an older children’s play area with a place to learn to skate and play ball games. Community members also expressed a desire for a place where local families can meet and socialise. The area will feature basketball and soccer markings and include a tennis ‘hit up’ wall. Street skate elements including a grind edge, hand rail, ramp and down ledge will form part of the court upgrade. Construction is due to start mid next year. The tennis court was flagged for multi-purpose use in Yarra Ranges Council’s Tennis Strategy and in the Kalorama Memorial Reserve Master Plan. Civic chat call COMMUNITY members are invited to share their feedback on the design of the new public space, as part of Yarra Ranges Shire’s Civic Centre redevelopment. The shire’s community engagement team will run a series of ‘pop-up’ engagement sessions throughout the Yarra Ranges from 2 February to 11 March. Also, a survey will be available, in print and online, through the ‘Have Your Say’ section of www.yarraranges. vic.gov.au, where residents can provide feedback on what they would like to see as part of the new civic space. A full list of ‘pop-up’ engagement sessions is available at www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au, as well as Council’s community links. Yarra Ranges Mayor Noel Cliff said the pop-up engagement sessions would also provide an opportunity for the com-

munity to view concept plans for the Civic Centre redevelopment. “Please come along to one of the sessions to be heard - I’m keen to hear your ideas on how you might use the public space, and you can also have a look at what’s being planned for the office redevelopment overall,” Cr Cliff said. Chief executive officer, Glenn Patterson, said this project supported council’s commitment to delivering quality services for residents. “Over the last few years, we have been improving processes and achieving significant efficiencies across the organisation,” Mr Patterson said. “We are embracing new ways of working that equip us to adapt to a rapidly changing world and enable us to deliver effective, functional and responsive customer service.

“The redevelopment and refurbishment of council’s civic centre will play an important role in this work, and is well overdue.” ‘Pop-up’ community engagement sessions for next month include: Thursday 2 February, 10am-4pm, at Lilydale Marketplace; Saturday, 4 February, at Kallista Market; Sunday 12 February, Big Dreams Market, Belgrave; Wednesday 15 February, 10am to 2pm, Mount Evelyn Library; Thursday 16 February, from 2pm to 6pm, at Lilydale shopping precinct (Market Place); Saturday 18 February, Montrose Craft Market.

Grand ‘Elder’ Don farewelled DON Bigham was farewelled on Thursday 19 January, as an elder statesman of the CFA and his beloved Gruyere community. Draped in the CFA flag, his coffin was carried on the shoulders of his friends and Gruyere Brigade colleagues to a shiny red fire engine and was both applauded and saluted as he passed by an outstanding guard of honour. Don died on 10 January 2017, as a result of a sudden heart attack. At 71, he had earned the ‘elder’ status, but as more than 1500 people farewelled the much-loved family man, CFA stalwart, ground-breaking farmer and friend, with laughter, tears and deep sadness, there was an overwhelming sense that he had been taken way before his time. His lifelong friend Kevin Spence said on behalf of many - “It’s been a great trip with Don all the way.” Sharing laugh-out-loud stories of their exploits growing up and living their entire lives in Gruyere he added, “It shouldn’t be Don ... he is still ‘Young Donny Bigham’.” Don’s wife of 49 years, Pat, daughters Andrea and Kerri sat at the front of the Heritage Chapel in Woori Yallock, surrounded by family and friends among a sea of CFA and other emergency services uniforms. Leading the service, CFA chaplain and family friend, Harley Kitchen, gave an overview of Don’s life. Born Donald David Bigham on 24 March, 1945, to Jim and Lill Bigham, he had a happy childhood growing up with two brothers, Ken and Alan, and a sister, Eunice, on the family farm at Gruyere. They epitomised the Aussie battler family. Don’s sense of community and strong work ethic were ingrained from

an early age. The family was active in the Gruyere community with his father among the founding members of the Gruyere Fire Brigade. “Larger than life”, heard often on the day, encapsulated the qualities of a man who lived life to the full from care-free days shooting rabbits, playing football for Coldstream and driving to his first fire at 16 years old, to leading the way in the establishment of free-range poultry farming, serving as president of Lilydale High School Council and making an unparalleled contribution as a volunteer firefighter over 55 years. Kevin Spence gave an insight into what it was like being always a couple of years younger than ‘young Donny’ as part of a tribute that was a mix of hilarious roast and gratitude for the fortunate lives they shared. He said Don was a league best and fairest and talented athlete who represented the CFA in competitions. “If you were playing in the same side he was looking after you,” he said. “It was the same at school and throughout our long history. He always had your back.” Gruyere CFA Captain Matt Sartori took over from Don when he retired from the captaincy 13 years ago after 18 years at the helm. Captain Sartori said CFA was his passion and his life and shared anecdotes of what was sometimes seen as Don’s unorthodox approach to CFA. He said Don led by example and always had the team’s safety and welfare as his top priority. He described Don as an exceptional driver educator who taught many CFA members driver skills, especially the off-road skills he was renowned for. And, he was a generous mentor. “If you had the time, he had the coffee and would make himself available. CFA was his passion and his life,” Captain Sartori said.

Don (left) learnt early to fight for his rights. Pictured with Hillcrest Captain Fiona Burns and Gruyere Captain Matt Sartori. 164118 CFA District 13 Operations manager David Renkin spoke on behalf of the CFA, giving a summary of his CFA service which, on paper, started in 1961. He served as captain of Gruyere Fire Brigade for 18 years, was Deputy Group Officer and Group Officer over a number of years and was Gruyere representative on the Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria at the time of his death. “Don has been an integral part of our training for many years. With his knowledge, experience and passion he would just ooze it at recruits training,” he said. “He wanted to make sure those people would come home safely. He said Don attended many of the major fires including 1962, ’68 and ’69 fires in the Dandenongs and Ash Wednesday in 1983, which he said had a huge impact on him. He went to the Sydney fires in 1994 and the Dandenongs fires in 1997, the Alpine area in 2003, was active in the

Black Saturday fires of 2009, and went up north to the floods in 2010. “Everywhere Don went he made friends. He was always the first to put his hand up to help,” OM Renkin said. Don’s contribution to CFA was recognised with a 55-year service award, life membership of Gruyere Fire Brigade and the CFA and received the National Medal with three bars. There were moving tributes from Don’s great-nieces Tegan and Hannah who were a big part of his life. “Uncle Don was the best man in my life,” Tegan wrote. Hannah recalled how Don would always greet them singing. “You would make a cup of tea and he would go out for a five-minute job,” she said. “By the time his so-called five minute job was finished, it would be cold because we didn’t factor in that it was Gruyere time, not our time.” Kerri spoke of a man, husband and father who measured up to the highest standards. “The ultimate measure of a man is not in the way he stands in times of comfort and convenience, but the way he stands in times of challenge and inconvenience,” she said. She spoke of his love of the CFA and community saying he was sensitive, passionate and proud of the fam-

ily he had raised and the many kids he had helped over the years. She spoke of his ‘beloved Gruyere’ and his connection with place and land. “But his most admiration, love and pride was for Mum” Kerri said. She said it was a relationship of friendship, respect, love, support and perseverance. “Dad was like a ship without a compass when Mum was not at home,” she said. “Our parents were those who would kiss and cuddle in the kitchen ... spontaneously dance around the kitchen.” Kerri said her dad was generous in giving of his spirit, time, knowledge and love and said the ultimate expression of his giving was his donation of a kidney to Andrea 10 years ago, giving her the opportunity to live a quality life. On his final resting place Don had made his intentions very clear. He wanted to be buried at Lilydale Memorial Park looking back over the Warramate Hills and keeping an eye on Gruyere. Which he was. And he had strong views on cremation. “He always said he had not fought the red bastard all his life to give in to it at the end,” Kerri said. RIP Don Bigham.

Dangerous corner

Change on the way for YCA

By Peter Douglas

THE Victorian Government has announced changes to the implementation of the extended Yellingbo Conservation Area. The decision comes in response to community concerns over the revegetation and bushfire risk in the north east corner of the area, which includes Launching Place, Yarra Junction, Don Valley, Millgrove and Wesburn. In November last year, the Yarra Waterways Group released a report outlining their concerns. These included the potential bushfire risk from revegetation along the Yarra River. Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio, said the changes would give greater surety to landholders. “We’ve carefully considered the concerns of landholders and are confident that by limiting the width of revegetation, we can better manage bushfire risk,” she said. “The changes have included the revegetation of a maximum of 10m on each side of a waterway and the prioritising of onground works to support bushfire and pest management. “The immediate funding of a priority pests and weeds program means we can tackle key areas of concern, while longerterm management of pest species in the area is determined through the planning process.“Among the changes, revegetation will not occur within the north-east corner of the conservation area until the bushfire planning process is complete." The management of riparian licences will be issued on an individual basis for a maximum of 10 years to replace grazing licences. In coming months, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning will seek to partner with local landholders and interest groups, such as Landcare, to deliver the new program effectively.

BELGRAVE resident Lola Diaz says her concerns over a dangerous Belgrave corner have been again justified. She said the stretch of road, down from Kaola Street, Belgrave, claimed another victim about 8.30pm on Thursday 12 January. According to Ms Diaz, the driver lost control when his vehicle slid across the other side when he applied his brakes, before crashing into an oncoming vehicle that had been towing a caravan. Among the passengers inside the vehicle with the caravan were three children. Ms Diaz said it was fortunate that no-one was injured. “I heard the sound of the crash from inside my home,” she said. “It appears there are similar circumstances to the situation (to other incidents), with the vehicle and trailer ending up on my property. “Both drivers lost control as they approached the corner.” This month’s incident is now the fourth in more than one year on that stretch of road. In November last year, Ms Diaz told the ‘Mail’ she feared a car may one day “missile” into her kitchen after numerous near misses. In the third incident, to which Ms Diaz referred above, a car slipped over an embankment along the Belgrave-Hallam Road in wet conditions, before tumbling down with great force into Ms Diaz’ front garden. Tree stumps stopped the vehicle’s momentum and no-one was seriously injured. The road in question is a section

A family with three children escaped unharmed in the crash. 164112 of the Belgrave-Hallam Road, just up from Kaola Street heading towards Belgrave South. The road runs above her property, which is situated in a gully with a steep incline that leads into her house. She feels she has a duty of care to both her neighbours and drivers on the road, because she believes one day they won’t be so lucky. “VicRoads has told me there have not been any deaths on that road and they won’t be installing barriers,” she said. “But, I’m wondering what it will take for them to take notice.”

New location and new life By Peter Douglas THE Fernlea Op Shop in Emerald is hoping a location change will breathe new life into the popular community destination. After seizing on a vacancy at 15 Kilvington Drive, just a stone’s throw from their original location at Shop 11, 5-7 Kilvington Drive, the store is ready to further establish itself at the town’s old police station. The move represents a chance to develop further engagement between the op shop and the community. Shop manager Catherine Kenney said they couldn’t wait to see some of their big plans come to fruition. “We just want to grow bigger and give the place a more community feel,” she said. “The old holding cell will be the storeroom and there’s a big space out the back we’re hoping to renovate and turn into a hub. “We’ll be doing some planting and creating a garden. “It’s a beautiful old building and we saw the opportunity it could bring for us.” Given the close proximity, the move has been swift, with removal trucks coming in on Thursday 12 January and the opening taking place on Monday 16 January. Ms Kenney said they presently had access to between 15 to 20 volunteers on their roster, but she believed they would need more in order to achieve the desired growth. The Fernlea Op Shop helps to support Fernlea House Respite Services, which operates through parts of eastern and south east Melbourne. The op shop helps to maintain the house’s programs and to keep fees down.

Fernlea House Chief Executive Officer, Sue McIvor, said they had simply outgrown the original premises. “We want to re-introduce community engagement, the big room will allow people to browse through books while having a coffee,” she said. “The town has been very supportive of the shop; it’s more than just an op shop.” If you would like to discuss volunteering at the Emerald shop, contact the friendly staff or visit www.fernlea. com.au.

BERNARDO’S Cafe Restaurant is enjoying a new lease on life, after impressive renovations and a rejuvenation of the menu. A long-time local favourite, previously known as the ‘Mountain Grande’, the dining destination has been enlivened inside and out. Though its traditional and endearing traits remain, with the cafe restaurant continuing to be a great social drawcard for locals and tourists. Bernardo’s owner Brendan Hoefs said recreating the cafe restaurant was a labour of love. “This iconic, heritage-listed building was crying out for a cuddle,” he said. “This has been a project for myself to turn this Monbulk icon into something spectacular.” Mr Hoefs said his aim was to create an inviting, welcoming space in which tourists and locals can enjoy a catch-up and great meal. Mr Hoefs said diners could be assured of a fantastic dining experience. “I have 35 years of experience as a chef, with 12 of those learning my trade in the navy,” he said. “My head chef, Chris King, has 17 years of experience as a chef in the local area.” He encouraged all locals to check out the rejuvenated cafe restaurant and enjoy the warm, comfortable environment. Among the many specials include: Tuesday nights they offer a roast night, with between three to four different meals for $14. Guests can add a dessert or soup for $2.50 each, while you can choose three courses for under $20. Bernardo’s - which has been a cafe since mid-August and a restaurant since midDecember - has alfresco dining and is fully licensed. Bernardo’s is located at 109 Main Road, Monbulk. Worries on home school By Kath Gannaway Yarra Ranges home schooling parents have railed against proposed changes to regulations they say will result in less time teaching their children and may require children to stay in unsafe environments in mainstream schooling. The Victorian Government released Draft Education Regulations just days before Christmas which include changes that the Home Education network says have the potential to affect parents and their children and has accused the government of legislation by stealth. A spokesman for the Education Department has dismissed the claims saying the changes were being made as part of the Education and Training Reform Regulations, which were made in 2007 and which need to be reviewed after 10 years. Home educator Shona Archer said the timeframe allowed little time for concerned parents to contact their local members of parliament, or for media discussion over summer holidays. She said the draft was due to be ratified when parliament returned on 7 February. Some of the proposed changes include all new home educators to submit a plan for approval, children to remain in school until approval has been given to home school and all home educators to be reviewed on a random basis. Ms Archer voiced concern that the assessments would be done by the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority staff, who she claims are inexperienced and not supportive of home education. Susan Wight, co-ordinator of the Home Education Network (HEN) which represents many home educators said there were a number of problems with the proposed regulations but said the timing of releasing the 66-page document was a gross injustice to all Victorian parents. Ms Wight said in relation to the requirement for approval before a child could be removed from school, the ability to withdraw a child from a negative situation as a matter of urgency was every parent’s right. “Requiring prior approval from bureaucrats with a vested interest in keeping children in school would allow the Education Department to quietly limit home education unless it replicated its own model, which is just not plausible,” she said. The department spokesman said while most home school families did a good job, and the regulations had been working well, the aim should always be for improvement. “Requiring a learning plan from home schooling families and giving the VRQA powers to review a family’s arrangements for home schooling are sensible steps forward,” he said. “It ensures young people get the education they deserve while still leaving home schooling families with considerable freedom.

Home School educators Shona Archer and Shona Armstrong with their students Heath, PICTURES: JODIE SYMONDS Jonathan, Drew, Esther and Martyn.164081 “There will be no requirement to provide home schooling in accordance with a specified curriculum, no mandatory home visits and registration will be ongoing rather than having to be renewed regularly as in some other states. Assessment will be done by education experts who have experience in different learning styles, including home schooling.” “In terms of timing - a detailed consultation

paper was launched in December last year to allow enough time for an extended consultation period of 60 days - compared to the required 28. “This will enable the development of the final policy in time for the sunset date of June 2017,” he said. Ms Wight urged home school parents and parents of children in mainstream schooling to contact their local member of parliament to push for an extension of time.

Shona Armstrong has concerns about changes to home school regulations. 164081

Torchlight parade a spectacle By Peter Douglas Ferntree Gully CFA will play host to brigades from the Dandenong Ranges and beyond at the upcoming Knox Fire Brigades Group Torchlight Parade. The hugely popular event will be of particular importance to the Ferntree Gully Brigade which, along with the Boronia brigade, this year celebrates 75 years of service to the community. Many local brigades including from Olinda, Macclesfield, Selby, Sassafras and Ferny Creek have put up their hand to attend the march on Saturday 4 March. Around 30 brigades from throughout Victoria and interstate will turn out.

The event will feature three of Victoria’s best pipe bands for the march. The route will begin at Ferntree Gully football ground (where the festival is held) and traditionally gains great support from the community. The event is a great way for fellow firefighters from around Victoria to meet up and enjoy a meal together. The torchlight parade is part of the Knox Festival and, on conclusion of the march, there will be a spectacular fireworks display. The march will kick off at 8.30pm. For further information, or to register a brigade, contact Graham Crichton on 0429 060 944 or graham.crichton@bigpond.com.

The march is a great way for members to show their passion. 163924

Land-Ho for La-La Land La-La Land (M) Starring: Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling La-La Land has been taking the awards season by storm, and for good reason. Directed and written by Whiplash’s Damien Chazelle, La-La Land follows aspiring actress Mia (Emma Stone) and jazz pianist Seb (Ryan Gosling) as they fall in love and pursue their dreams. La-La Land is a charming tribute to the golden age of Hollywood, but is careful to avoid a rose-tinted view of moviemaking (or anything else). Mia and Seb both struggle to advance in their fields and have their talents recognised, and must weather hardships and compromise. While their process of coming together feels somewhat rushed, Stone and Gosling have fantastic chemistry, and the film wisely depicts the inherent messiness of so

many relationships. People can be insecure, selfish and capricious sometimes, and LaLa Land never shies away from this, finally culminating in a gratifyingly mature, non-fairytale ending. The cinematography is vibrant and richly coloured, and the art direction has a magical, timeless quality to it. I don’t like jazz, but I still appreciated the film’s evident passion for the genre. The only weak link is the musical numbers. While the songs are lively and sweet, the lyrics are rather inane, and the dance choreography is stilted and lacking in energy. Ironically, La-La Land falls short in the musical department, but overall it’s a poignant and delightful experience. - Seth Lukas Hynes

Gut-brain-immune issue THE human microbiome is a combination of micro-organisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa etc.) that exist in and on the surfaces of the human body. The majority of these organisms reside within the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and weigh up to 2kg of the GIT mass alone. You can imagine that your microbiome is like a complex eco-system made up of many different species both symbiotic and pathogenic, many of which will be unique to you and your social group. Alterations in the gut microbiota in emerging evidence has been linked to brain and neurological function, psychiatric symptoms, obesity, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome and altered

and healthy brain chemical signalling and around 85 per cent of your immune function, just to name a few. Because the human microbiome plays a significant role in whole health, more attention should be directed towards it beyond simply re-inoculating the gut during and after antibiotic use. A good way to get started on this is to establish what shape your GIT is in. Tests nowadays, and there are numerous types from stool analysis, food intolerance testing and patient questionnaires can determine population numbers of good, bad and opportunistic gut flora, gut germ overgrowth, infectious pathogens, excess fermentation to name just a few.

immune function, to list a few. This is referred as the gut-brainimmune axis. Your GIT is responsible for a diverse and well-orchestrated complex of functions such as nutrient absorption, production of vitamins and enzymes, neurotransmitter production

This approach would play a central role in determining what your body needs as opposed to the one-size-fitsall approach. Diet certainly plays a significant role also. Refined foods such as sugar, caffeine and alcohol can have adverse effects on your gut microbiome, and will tend to feed the pathogenic species, so limit their consumption and keep your diet rich in whole foods, organic seasonal produce to reduce residues of pesticides and antibiotics and regular consumption of fermented foods will support your precious microbiome to thrive. Similarly, using natural-based household and body cleansers can help

Letters

avoid unnecessary collateral damage caused by harmful chemical cleaning agents. It may be worth noting that the FDA recently banned the use of antibacterial hand sanitisers due to health concerns and the evidence that most anti-bacterial chemicals are no better at cleaning hands than regular soap. If you’re suffering physical, mental/ emotional, immunological or metabolic health concerns, taking an individual approach to rebalancing your gut microbiome may yield great rewards. Consider it as a complementary and integrative approach to your whole health that will serve you well and enhance your overall wellbeing.

Champion of the union I would like to comment on Jodie Symonds’ article regarding the CFA EBA dispute (‘Mail’, 10 January, page 1). Ms Symonds states as facts matters that are just not true. Having read the EBA in detail, I cannot find any clauses that affect the power balance between the UFU and the CFA. (Former Victorian Emergency Services Minister) Ms (Jane) Garrett resigned from her position of minister as a result of her machinations within the ALP, not because of the CFA matter. She, however, used it as a justification. Basically, the dispute is a beat-up by the Liberals to damage the ALP. The dispute dragged on for years under the previous Liberal Government because it suited their position in the electorate. They also tried it with the ambulance EBA, with less success.

The hierarchy of the VFBC is extremely right wing and will strenuously oppose anything to do with unions and the ALP. The former CFA board was of a similar mould. The UFU, under Peter Marshall, has also been extremely bloody-minded in its handling of the matter. The Andrews Government, I believe, has purely attempted to resolve a longrunning dispute with fairness to all sides. (New Emergency Services Minister) Mr (James) Merlino lives in an area served by volunteer fire brigades and, I know, holds volunteers in the highest regard. Ms Symonds claims that seven paid firefighters must be dispatched “before work could begin”. This does not mean that work will only begin when they arrive. If there are sufficient resources on-site (paid and/or volunteer) to safely begin work, they will. Unnecessary resources will be cancelled and will return to station.

The Federal Government bought into the matter with scare tactics which possibly saved their government at the recent election. It is extremely disappointing that the Liberal Party can whip up a storm that has potential to affect the roles of paid and unpaid fire fighters for purely political purposes. Geoff Champion, Mount Dandenong.

*Editor’s note: The article appeared on page 1, underneath a masthead clearly stating ‘Year in Review’. The ‘Mail’ deemed the EBA dispute to be the most important issue in the Dandenong Ranges during 2016. The review intended only to briefly highlight the major issues discussed between the various groups involved in the dispute.

Wheeler stars for the Tigers By Steve Brown FTGDCA Upwey-Tecoma fast bowler Cameron ‘Hot Wheels’ Wheeler dominated Round 9 of Reeves Shield when he helped the Tigers book a finals appearance after taking 7/55 against Knox Gardens. Upwey set the Falcons 240 thanks to a rear guard action by Steve Gannell (50) and Steve Strahan (30) on day one and held on to win by 24 runs with Wheeler the destroyer taking his tally to 27 wickets at the healthy average of 11. Knox Gardens has dropped their last two matches in tight finishes. Former Sub District star Monto Perera showed his class when he orchestrated Knoxfield’s first loss of the season as the Eildon Park Panthers won by 33 runs, enhancing their finals prospects. The Knights were in a winning position at 4/166 chasing 259 before off-spinner Perera weaved his magic, taking 7/50 as the Knoxfield tail failed to wag losing their last six wickets for just 23 runs. Belgrave, in pursuit of The Basin’s 197, were in the box seat at 4/118, only to be bundled out for a disappointing 141 as the bowling partnership of Josh Lee 2/29 and Matt Heskes 2/30 from a

combined 44 overs, applied the screws on the Belgrave batting line-up with the exception of Jon Levell with 56. The Basin Bears are still in touch with the top four with four rounds to play. Ferntree Gully 4/271 finally secured a win against Monbulk (261) who cannot buy a wicket. Bryce Galvin smashed an unbeaten century for the Gully combining with Jayden Bradbury (64) and man of the match Ryan Handley (51) to add to his 5 wickets last week. Upper Gully’s 289 was out of reach of Mt Gate, dismissed for just 146. Kings leg spinner Robbie Birnie picked up 3/21 whilst Travis Clarke top scored for the Gators with 41. By Jamie Strudley

UPWEY-TECOMA BOWLS U p w e y - Te c o m a ’ s Midweek pennant team go from strength to strength and sit comfortably on top of the ladder. Unfortunately, the three Saturday pennant teams all suffered big losses and sit at the bottom of the table in each of their respective divisions; but with six weeks to go and some winnable games ahead, all three teams can climb off the bottom and turn the season around. Jack Attack starts on 30 Monday January; so if you’re keen to put a team together and play for some great prizes in this exciting format, then contact the club and book in your spot.
