An enriched Casey future depends on preserving its treasures of the past, says Berwick’s heritage stalwart Ruth Crofts. Ms Crofts, who has been announced as a recipient of an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) on Australia Day, has been part of the state’s National Trust for nearly 40 years. The founder of the trust’s energetic Casey-Cardinia branch more than a decade ago says that new generations get pride in their suburbs from a properly interpreted history. “If you look around us, there’s a really rich history around us. “There’s a fabric that remains, that helps give people a sense of place and a sense of belonging somewhere.” Keeping history alive - whether it’s a building, tree or landscape - is about getting on the front foot, Ms Crofts says. “If I see something I don’t like, I’ll do something about it. “It’s better to have tried and failed rather than do nothing at all.” Of her fights, Ms Crofts has won plenty. Among the important campaigns are halting the sell-off of the former Berwick Primary School and instead establishing Pioneers Park behind the old school house. She was also part of the steering committee for a Lord Casey statue in Berwick. It fills her with pride to see the numerous Victorian sites saved by National Trust. “I’m not against development per se, but it needs to be sensitively done and with consideration of what’s there before.” Ms Crofts has kept a keen interest in her family’s history, since her Bell family forefathers arrived from Scotland in 1859.

We are also on the edge of our seats, awaiting the arrival of the timber grid shell which will feature in the foyer! The first shipment will be hitting customs in the coming fortnight and once delivered to site this remarkable timber piece will be quickly put in place.
Disabled for competition By Victoria Stone-Meadows Cranbourne Little Athletics is the first club in the state to offer competition to athletes with a disability. The multiclass group of athletes had their first chance to compete at the club’s meteorite gift held on Saturday 14 January. Head coach of Cranbourne Little Athletics Mark Jouvelet said the kids in the group put on a great performance in their first ever outing. “It’s the first time that category been recognised by Little Athletics Victoria,” he said. “Saturday night they got a chance to complete for medals and when they ran out there was not a dry eye in the house; one of the best community things we’ve seen for a long time.” The multiclass group of little athletes has roughly 10 participants with a range of differently abled impairments from mental

Arts get creative boost Performing arts has received $100,000 from Creative Victoria to assist in delivering a range of innovative programs at Bunjil Place. Through a series of collaborative residencies, performances and workshops, the community will have the opportunity to engage with some of Victoria’s key arts organisations such as Circus Oz, Australian Ballet, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the Melbourne Theatre Company. Programs like this will connect local and professional organisations together with the community to create engaging and meaningful, arts, cultural and entertainment experiences that will be available to more of our residents.
gram developed and the first meeting in October. The club is hoping that with a successful program catering for kids with a disability they can encourage other clubs to do the same and help more differently abled children get into sports. Ms O’Day, who has become the co-ordinator of the program, said the chance afforded to the kids has made a big difference in their lives. “It has made a huge difference in terms of their skills and confidence and going out and giving it a go,” she said. “Some have been told they cannot do certain things and they have done those things and they celebrate everything.” “They celebrate each other’s achievements and its beautiful and lovely to see unfold, parents are happy to see their kids do things outside of what they thought was ever possible.”

disabilities to blindness. The club, with the help of volunteer Nina O’Day, has designed an athletics program for the group that allows them to participate in events that ablebodied kids do as well. “Little Athletics Victoria gave permission for the format and in particular gave licence to change the offering to be more inclusive,” Mr Jouvelet said. “We also asked parents what they wanted and incorporated that into it and went on the front foot rather than let the state body design a program that was too small.” “We wanted to make sure the kids enjoy it and it is an incredible development but just in its infancy and numbers are quite small.” While the club have been working on getting this program running for a few years, from June 2016 they got the concept off the ground, the pro-
UP to 100 disadvantaged young people will be targeted as part of a $550,000 Empower Youth program to counter youth crime in Greater Dandenong and Casey. YSAS (Youth Support Advocacy Service) won the State Government grant to employ further youth workers in the region. The workers will support atrisk and vulnerable young peo-
ple with their health and wellbeing, community involvement, career pathways and education and training. Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley said young people in need of help and guidance “deserve to have every chance to succeed and excel”. “And through this program, we will ensure they do just that.” Narre Warren North MP
Luke Donnellan said the program would improve social, community and economic opportunities for young people. Casey and Greater Dandenong were identified as a priority area for the $4 million statewide program due to high levels of socio-economic disadvantage and crime. The program was the first state grant specifically for funding youth workers in the past six years, according to the State Government.

Medal for motivation By Victoria Stone-Meadows
A Beaconsfield man has had his long years of environmental work with the Cranbourne Botanic Gardens and other groups recognised with a Medal of the Order of Australia. Alex Smart has been involved with preservation of the Australian environment for most of his life and said it is a great honour to receive this award on Australia Day. “I was a bit stunned and when the letter came from the Governor General but it certainly was a very pleasant surprise,” he said. “I was thrilled to bits to think I am getting recognised for my work on the environment and natural history on Australia Day because that’s really what motivates me; I am passionate about natural heritage, plants, animals, and the environment.” Mr Smart, now 78 years old, first became involved with environmental volunteer work when he was a teenager and would regularly visit the Grampians from his home in Yarraville. “I got involved with some friends who were interested in the Grampians and walking and looking at the plants and the animals,” he said. “That was what initiated my interest and my friends would point things out and ask how things work.” Since that time, Mr Smart has been involved as a volunteer with many environmental groups across Melbourne but was most heavily involved with the Royal Botanic Gardens at Cranbourne. “The Australian Plants Society and my friends from there were involved with the Royal Botanic Garden in Cranbourne and it is an absolute gem,” he said. Mr Smart first became a committee member for the Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne in 1994 and has held many volunteer roles with the gardens since.
Alex Smart has been honoured on Australia Day 2017 with a Medal of the Order of Australia for his work on environmental preservation. 164152 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS “I have been involved with that for over 20 years now, the collection of Australian plants there has won many awards and it is just wonderful to go there and help people see things and have a look. “It’s more than just the Australian Garden, though, there is a wonderful indigenous section and rare and threatened plants - it is just a thrill to see them and photograph them.” Through his involvement in the gardens and his tireless volunteer efforts,
Mr Smart received the honour of having one of the plant growing houses named after him; the building is now known as Alex’s Shed. Mr Smart said he was unaware his friends had nominated him for the award but is grateful they did. “My friends nominated me and the bastards didn’t tell me,” he said. “I don’t know who all the nominations were from but it is good and I am lucky to have friends I have worked
with over the years who have probably embellished what I have done.” Although stepping back from his official duties at the Cranbourne Botanical Gardens due to his age, Mr Smart’s passion for environmental preservation shows no signs of slowing. “Even in my local environment here at Beaconsfield I have things going like an attempt to reintroduce the Helmeted Honeyeater along the creek,” he said.
“We are at a stage where the federal Helmeted Honeyeater Recovery Committee has agreed the Helmeted Honeyeater should be introduced to the Upper Beaconsfield area.” Mr Smart received a Medal of the Order of Australia for service to conservation and the environment and will join other awards he has won such as a Centenary Medal in 2001 and becoming an Honorary Fellow of the Metrology Society of Australia in 2003.
Bail Justice controversy: Smith speaks for the defence Casey councillor Wayne Smith has defended the under-fire Bail Justice system in the wake of a man being charged with murdering five people in Bourke Street, Melbourne while on bail. Cr Smith, a Bail Justice who has presided over 995 cases in the past 11 years, called for peak body Royal Victorian Association of Honarary Justices to break its silence and back the volunteer Bail Justices. “There’s been concern that bail justices aren’t getting support in this instance.” Bail Justices - though not as steeped in the law as magistrates were highly trained in applying the state’s Bail Act, Cr Smith said.
He said that as part of his training, he attended Melbourne Magistrates’ Court for a week, sat an exam and practical assessments. As the Bail Act has changed, BJs received updated training including online tests to ensure they could apply the act. “I’d like to think all of my decisions are fairly well considered. “I’m far from a hanging judge but I’d think I’ve only bailed people 20-30 times.” A BJ is typically called into police stations after-hours to decide on serious offenders. For less serious charges, police can often release a person on bail or summons. “When you’re called up, the chances of them being released is usually pretty slim.
CHEAPEST FLOORING/DECKING
“It’s not a personal decision and I’m not being nasty. I’m just applying the Bail Act. “I can say I’ve never left the police station and had any doubt I’ve made the right decision.” After recent public outcry, the State Government moved to replace BJs with magistrates sitting in a night court - a proposal that would require extreme resources, Cr Smith said. Cr Smith is one of up to seven BJs in the Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong region. He alone can hear up to six cases on a weekend. He hoped the system wouldn’t be scrapped, describing it as a “good tradition” to have an “ordinary person in the community” involved.

Cr Smith said BJs based their decision on the applicant’s criminal history, risk to public safety and whether they had suitable accommodation. The prime issues were whether the applicant was likely to re-offend and likely to abscond from court. He felt sympathy for the unnamed bail justice who had released Dimitrious Gargasoulas less than a week before he allegedly drove his car into pedestrians on 20 January. “There are people on social media saying name them and shame them. “(The BJ) was just doing their job. “We are volunteers but we are very highly trained - that’s what hurt me the most.”

Advice across generations Grandparents without grandchildren and children without grandparents have had a chance to connect and share knowledge thanks to a new program organised by the City of Casey. The intergenerational Bridging the Gap program brings young and old together to share stories, knowledge and experiences for those that may not have the opportunity to do so. Casey Council’s Home and Community Care clients had the chance to connect with students from Fleetwood Kindergarten for the program. The program was deemed so successful by parents, council and teachers that it has been extended beyond a pilot program and will be a permanent fixture for community connections within Casey. Cranbourne Library has been chosen as an exhibition building to display artworks and photographs created by the children and seniors during the program. The exhibition opened on 20 December 2016 and will run until Saturday 28 January 2017.

Grab for land By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey council is a step closer to compulsorily acquiring a 78-year-old man’s 34-acre home in Narre Warren North after its proposal was backed by a Planning Panels Victoria report. Panel chairman Con Tsotsoros stated that Casey’s proposed public acquisition of John Foy’s house, heavily vegetated lake, gardens and paddocks was “appropriate and justified” in light of the need for four soccer pitches and a pavilion at 191195 Belgrave-Hallam Road. Casey councillors, on the back of the panel’s recommendation, are expected to vote on the public acquisition overlay on 7 February. A disappointed Mr Foy, backed by several neighbours, said he would lobby for Planning Minister Richard Wynne to intervene. “I thought Con seemed pretty reasonable but when I read his report, I thought: ‘You a***hole’. “The report is just turned around all in the council’s favour. “They’re trying to make me look like an environmental vandal and the council is the environmental experts.” Mr Foy said the council’s plans would flatten trees and wreck the habitat-rich wetland and garden he created over the past 30 years. He would refuse to deal with Casey because of the “way they’ve dealt with me” - including being surprised by the council’s plans to take his entire
John Foy, front right, with supporters opposed to Casey's planned acquisition of his home. 163732 Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS property days before Mr Tsotsoros’s hearing. He had thought Casey only wanted to purchase a section of land along Eumemmerring Creek for the Lysterfield LakeFrog Hollow Reserve missing link, he said. “They just want to come in and railroad me off the land with no questions asked.” In his report, Mr Tsotsoros commended the council for its “robust” leisure-fields strategies that showed a shortage of soccer fields at the appropriate standard in Casey. “The net community benefit achieved from applying the public acquisition overlay would far outweigh any disbenefit to the subject site owner. “Council does not seek to acquire more land than reasonably required.” Mr Tsotsoros said he was
“empathetic” to Mr Foy’s request for his pet dogs’ cemetery not to be disturbed but it could not be enabled in a public acquisition overlay. He said traffic, parking and amenity-related issues would be considered during any planning process for the proposed sports facility, which would extend the existing Narre Warren North Reserve. Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani said she had an open mind on the public acquisition ahead of meeting with Mr Foy on 25 January. “This has been a hard one but we have to decide in light of what’s best for the community. “Residents don’t want their rates to keep being put up but they want sports facilities to be provided, so we have to introduce them in the most costeffective way possible.”

The leniency of the lower levels of justice; the affiliates; namely the “bail justices system” ought the be reviewed, with a series of conditions, under which “bail” will not be granted. Miscreants and terrorists have slipped through and caused wanton damage to property and life. Analysis, and cumulation, of numerous crimes, some ending in death, or injury, of innocent bystanders, or persons in the wrong place, at the wrong time, further proves that bail ought to be withheld. The CBD rampage is an act of “terror” as is evident from the ranting and raving on Facebook of the perpetrator of this dastardly act inflicted at the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, the pulsation of “our Melbourne”. Little children in the safety of prams, people happily enjoying the ambience of a stroll - the whole of Melbourne and Victoria is livid with rage and shocked beyond belief. This I believe is an aberration of the law and that the law is flawed, not ensuring the ordinary citizens the right to safety of life and property. Any violation which is an affront to the rule of law, is intrinsically a violation. I recommend zero tolerance. A) Singapore has the death sentence for violations associated with drugs. B) Proven miscreants of the law ought not to be freed on bail by bail justices. C) Proven violators whose previous, violations have been the consequence of mental illness should not be released to the community by bail justices. D) Bail Justices should agree, and uphold the recommendations, of the police authorities; because by their cumulated experience, know that the potential for repeat violations by criminals is likely. E) The rampant disrespect of the law by marauders, who barge into homes and steal. F) The recent wave of break-ins into jewellery stores and homes, points to perhaps a schemed and planned effort to inflict an atmosphere of terror which tantamounts to“ treason” and calls for firmer action. G) Even graffitti scrawlers should be penalised with long, extended hours of clean up rather than being wastefully incarcerated. Penalties for graffitti ought to be reviewed. Leniency has been abused as is evident by the spate of unsightly graffitti. Thus far it has not taken racist overtones, this will come if not stopped, or abated. Let the home owner, or shop keeper, have the right to take appropriate action, in the name of self-defence, even to the point of using a gun, or cudgel, and that death, or maiming, of the criminal be judged as self-defence, not punishable by law. A clear message should be sent out to all that the law is not an ass, to be sneered at, that the law has teeth, and politicians are no more effete, and helpless. Terror is a result of weakness of the rule of law. Milroy Martyn, Endeavour Hills.
Don’t sacrifice us An open letter to Casy Council from the residents of Berwick Springs Estate: Dear Casey Council, You know that we found out by accident that our beautiful tree-lined bluestone entrance, our walking paths, and mature trees at Berwick Springs would be sacrificed due to Alira’s developer wanting access to Greaves Road and this required a massive new roundabout. This was terribly underhanded. When you discussed this intersection with the developer and the Victorian Planning Authority (VPA) you did not think that Berwick Springs residents would mind having 50-60 metres of their estate taken without consultation or community discussion, while the developer was allowed to not have to forgo one centimetre of their land. You were awfully wrong and seriously out of touch with community sentiment. When you created amendment C188 to the planning scheme you did not think to include the new proposed roundabout because the amendment, by law, had to be advertised and take community submissions. This was a careless mistake. When you and the VPA designed this intersection you thought Berwick Springs residents would not notice that the 10-metre roundabout would now become a multi-lane 50-metre roundabout and you failed to com-
Lenscape
One of the resident koalas at Moonlit Sanctuary known as “Little Mate”. 162167 Picture: VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS municate this plan to residents. This is sheer lack of transparency. When Berwick Springs residents asked for information, documentation, and evidence that you had consulted the community, as it is your legal obligation, you did not think it was a problem to refer us to the Berwick Springs Wetland Plan that has nothing to do with the proposed roundabout and you still you cannot provide evidence of consultation. Intentionally sending us on wild goose chase for every skerrick of information. Your persistent misdirection is deplorable. You remain insistent that this is the responsibility of the VPA and you have misdirected us to Melbourne Water and to VicRoads, continuing to claim that this issue is the responsibility of those authorities/agencies, not your own. All three authorities/agencies have confirmed this to be a matter for council. You are so obviously wrong and in an utter state of denial. You did not foresee that existing residents, who dutifully pay their council rates, would be annoyed, upset and most disappointed that you would side with and support Alira’s developer, instead of standing up for our rights and for the protection of our current amenity. This was cold-hearted and completely out of touch. Even now, you do not seem to think that there is an issue in having Alira’s developer, who has a clear economic self-interest, create a new proposal for the intersection, after Judith Graley MP and Luke Donnellan MP had to intervene due to the failures in the
Ray’s
say
process. You also do not seem to think that there is an issue in tabling the revised proposal to council in February 2017, without prior community consultation. This is not in line with your own community consultation charter. You are a repeat offender and a bad learner. You have become very defensive and at times aggressive when residents ask pertinent questions that seek to establis h the sequence of events, whether due process was followed, and who is accountable. You have been hostile and sunk to personal attacks on residents’ representatives. This attitude is unwarranted and highly unprofessional. To correct these wrongs: * You must listen to the residents; * You must inform the developer, as it is right to do, to take responsibility for the full costs of their development by putting the new roundabout on their land as part of their new estate; * You must leave our 20-year-old established estate entrance untouched; * You must consult the community prior to making any changes and take the community feedback fully and wholeheartedly; * You must take responsibility for your past actions and admit your mistakes so that we can move on; * You must stop pointing the finger at others and turn it around and point it at yourself, and; * You must stop the hostility and personal attacks to our representatives. Then you will be right! Berwick Springs Residents 2016.

Police fear drunk might kill family By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man described by police as having a high risk of killing or seriously injuring his Narre Warren South sister and elderly parents has been refused bail at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. While on bail in January, the 27-year-old had been a persistent threat to his family soon after serving four months’ jail for threatening his sister with a knife and contravening an intervention order, the court heard. Police informant Acting Sergeant Peter Brereton said the man’s “rampant alcoholism”, propensity for violence and disregard for bail conditions and a full intervention order put the three family members at great risk. When police asked about the intervention order, the man told them “that’s bulls***”, Sgt Brereton said. “Since he was arrested, he continuously questioned police as to who informed them he was in the (family’s) house.
“Police fear that he will cause harm to that person.” On 6 January, the sister arrived home, only to be greeted by the intoxicated man inside the front door - in defiance of the order. Speaking to someone on his phone, the man said: “Watch what I’m going to do to her.” The sister fled out of fear for what the man had done to her in the past. The next day, police arrested the man inside the house. He failed to appear in court while on bail on 16 January, but later on the same day visited the home and the three protected family members. Again he was arrested and bailed to appear in court on 25 January. In the meantime, the man returned to the house while drunk and violently threatened his parents until they fled. He was found by police asleep on the couch. Sgt Brereton said the man had been found

guilty of serious crimes including assaulting police, recklessly causing injury and assisting an offender charged with attempted murder. The man, who represented himself, said he had visited the family home after he was assaulted at his Cranbourne boarding house accommodation. Since fleeing the boarding house, he’d “stayed under the trees when I can” but “I had nowhere else to go”. He said he was seeking rehabilitation for his alcoholism but was not on any medication. Magistrate Lance Martin said there was a real risk that the man would re-offend and he hadn’t shown cause for bail. Mr Martin noted the serious charges, prior family violence, lack of employment, alcohol abuse and that the man had “really no address to go to”. The matter was adjourned for a CREDIT bail assessment, including treatment and housing support, on 25 January.
Broken arm was pasta point of no return By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren mother of five has broken her daughter’s arm after hurling a bowl of spaghetti across a room, a court was told. The mother had been sitting on a couch eating spaghetti as the pair argued over the daughter not receiving any birthday presents. The flung bowl shattered on a door frame next to where the 20-year-old victim stood, with a fragment hitting her arm, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard on 23 January.
The daughter’s arm required surgery at Casey Hospital. The mother was charged with discharging a missile and served with an intervention order after the 5 January incident. Her daughter had since moved out to live with a relative, the court was told. A defence lawyer said the mother reacted poorly to a verbal barb from the daughter, but had not intended to hit the victim. The pair had since “completely reconciled”,
the lawyer said. Describing the incident as an “abnormality”, the lawyer said “she has never had an issue with her kids”. Magistrate Clive Alsop said he would not convict the mother since it was her first violent offence. He was concerned that something could be done to “keep the family constellation together”. The mother was given a 12-month good behaviour bond.

Prolific singer-songwriter Kerrigan La-Brooy is offering his expertise to students for - what you could call - a song. The Berwick father of six says he is launching his non-profit Triple Treat Talent Academy to offer affordable and non-exploitative tuition for budding actors, singers and dancers. “I’m aware there are many children out there with unrecognised abilities due to the fact that parents can’t afford to harness and enhance their talent. The academy’s students will stage an endof-year production, with them and their families sharing the profits, Mr La-Brooy said. “I strongly believe that children should be remunerated for their talent and their efforts - and families too, for the time they invest in their children’s welfare. Mr La-Brooy said the academy was a natu-
ral step after putting his successful international career on hold for several years to tend for his children. He plans to complete an album, including gospels, involving his children. “Now that my youngest is three (years old) and they’re old enough to join me, I’m picking up where I left off. The Sri Lankan-born entertainer has a long list of chart-topping country and rock n’roll tracks in mainstream worldwide, European and Australian markets. Recently he opened Casey’s Christmas Eve carols, and has been booked a year in advance for this year’s concert. “Fans can rest assured that when Kerrigan preaches the Word of God, it will be with a song in his heart, he said. The academy will be launched at 10 Blake Street, Berwick, at 1pm on 28 January. Details: Kerrigan, 0404 875 647.

Drugs danger documented
EXPERIENCE DIFFERENT
By Victoria Stone-Meadows Over 200 people packed into Timbarra Community Hall in Berwick on Saturday 21 January for the launch of a book by local drug rehabilitation coach and mentor Glenn Munso. The book, titled ‘Drugs do not discriminate’ not only tells Mr Munso’s story of drug addiction but provides the tools for readers and groups to help themselves or the people around them end their drug dependency. Mr Munso has been helping young people in the Casey and surrounding areas kick their drug habits through a specially tailored mentor program for almost three years. The ‘YouthYou Program’ is run from Mr Munso’s Gym in Hallam and helps young people with a drug addiction turn their lives around. Mr Munso said he was absolutely astounded by the number of people who attended his book launch in Berwick and could not thank the community enough for their support. “It was really good,” he said. “We had people drive from two hours away from places like Melton, Essendon and even further; it was a really successful night.” Mr Munso said launching his book was just the first step to expanding his program fur-

Glenn Munso cuts the ribbon at his book launch in Berwick to celebrate the release of his newly released book. Picture: CONTRIBUTED ther afield to help more people in rural communities with their drug issues. “The next step is doing the book tours and I’ve got a few lined up from Shepparton, Horsham, Gippsland and all through rural Victoria,” he said. “Then we are going to launch an online program that correlates with the book and includes a 30-day detox online program, we have talks organised as well.” Mr Munso sold about 200 books at the launch and has another 192 on his pre-order log but said donating books where they were needed most is an important part of the program.
UNIVERSITY PATHWAYS AVAILABLE
“We donated some books to organisations that were represented at the launch like churches and mental illness centres,” he said. Mr Munso hopes that with the tools in the books and an expansion of the program into regional areas, he can help young people from across the state to kick their drug habits and live better lives. “The support and the awareness from the community was an eye-opener,” he said. “What we did Saturday night we want to do in other cities; we want to go out and help more people who are suffering and need the help.”

Aziz attacks By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey mayor Sam Aziz has launched an extraordinary salvo against Berwick residents campaigning to preserve their premium estate’s bluestone gateway. The residents, originally outraged by a proposal for the Berwick Springs landscaped wall feature being shifted for a wider roundabout, have since returned fire in an open letter to Casey Council. The spat started with Cr Aziz’s stinging rebuke on the residents’ ‘Berwick Springs Estate’ Facebook page on 14 January. “Unfortunately, you have all been taken for a ride by (residents' organiser) Michael Ball,” the post begins. Cr Aziz accused Mr Ball of manipulating residents as part of a “malicious self-promotion
political campaign”. “Given his appalling conduct and his deliberate manipulation for his own ego at the expense of the interests of our residents, I will no longer deal with him ... neither will our officers.” Cr Aziz said he would instead listen to the executive of Berwick Residents and Ratepayers Association. In the post, Cr Aziz denied the council was to blame for the lack of community consultation for the gateway changes at the corner of Greaves Road and Berwick Springs Promenade. Cr Aziz said the Metropolitan Planning Authority, an arm of the State Government, was responsible. Meanwhile, the residents’ open letter accused Casey of being “underhanded”, “seriously out-of-touch” and exhibiting a “sheer lack of transparency”.

berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
Its Facebook page has posted for Cr Aziz to “stop bullying and attacking the messenger”. Mr Ball responded on Facebook that Cr Aziz should have taken it on himself to inform residents of the proposal. “I would not report in the Berwick News that this is a non issue or that we are jumping at shadows. “It also disappoints me that Cr Aziz thinks he can shift the responsibility and blame from his council and start personal and vindictive attacks upon myself.” Mr Ball stated Cr Aziz had not replied to several requests to meet with residents. Another resident Georgia Mandarino posted in reply to Cr Aziz: “The very things that you say about Michael Ball are the things the community feels about you.”

Residents challenge fishy affair A developer may use the alleged existence of an endangered fish and frog to justify a controversial roundabout at the entrance of Berwick Springs estate. However, opponents are skeptical and have demanded proof of Moremac Property Group’s claims. Moremac principal Bryce Moore said his company had no intention of changing the roundabout’s site despite opposition
from enraged Berwick Springs residents whose estate’s landscaped bluestone wall entrance would be bulldozed to make way for the project. Moremac’s proposed works are about 30 metres south of the existing roundabout on Greaves Road and Berwick Springs Promenade. The developer has promised to restore the gateway feature further south. Mr Moore said the chief factor for not building north of the current roundabout on Morem-
ac’s Alira estate was to protect the dwarf galaxias fish as well as the growling grass frog in Hallam Valley Contour Drain. Berwick Springs resident Georgia Mandarino challenged Moremac to produce an environmental effects survey. Ms Mandarino said the dwarf galaxias was likely to be extinct in the region, according to a Federal Government report. She added that the drain was not a Category 1 habitat for the growling grass frog.

The much anticipated redeveloped St John of God Berwick Hospital is set to open its doors in October. The seven story building of two level underground carpark and five level hospital services is located on Kangan Drive, Berwick, and is highly visible from many vantage points around the Casey region. St John of God CEO Lisa Norman said this visibility had led to many inquiries and questions from the community about the hospital. She said the new hospital would offer all the services currently at the Gibb Street hospital, as well as new services. These would include 202 beds, an intensive care unit, eight operating theatres, a cardiac and vascular catheter laboratory, cardiac unit, six birthing suites, a six cot special care nursery and 350 basement car parks.
Ms Norman said the current Gibb Street hospital would operate as usual during construction. “We will relocate all services currently located at Gibb Street to the new hospital in Kangan Drive,” she said. “The Gibb Street facility will temporarily close whilst it undergoes a redevelopment of its own. “The facility will be transformed into a rehabilitation hospital that will open in mid2018. “Our consulting suites and pathology laboratory will be relocated to the new hospital. “This creates an opportunity for new services in this facility.” According to Ms Norman, parking prices would be similar to Casey Hospital’s car parking fees and there would be no emergency department at the new hospital when it opened.
“Future planning has considered the addition of an ED at the Kangan Drive Hospital,” she said. Ms Norman said there would be plenty of opportunities for employment at St John of God with a recruitment campaign beginning in mid-2017. Interested parties are able to register on the hospital website by visiting www.sjog.org. au/berwickcareers. Registering will allow people to receive updates and notifications of roles as they are advertised. For further information on the redevelopment of the St John of God Berwick Hospital, visit www.sjog.org.au/berwickredevelopment, email info.berwick@sjog.org.au or follow St John of God Berwick Hospital on Facebook and Instagram for the latest news, developments and photos from the site.
Invisible braces, total care Each patient is given personalised care from Dr Andy Ong at Elite Orthodontics at Narre Warren South. The focus of the clinic is to bring the latest and best advances in clinical orthodontics including braces to the CaseyCardinia community. Staff aim to provide caring and experienced treatment by a registered Australasian Orthodontic Board-certified specialist orthodontist. The practice encourages parents to be chair-side during visits to allow treatment progress to be discussed in detail. Operating for the past six years in the Casey-Cardinia area, the practice offers a mini-
mal waiting list and a scheduling policy which allows patients to start treatment when they want to. And patients only see one orthodontist with Dr Ong there from start to finish. Traditional metal braces, clear braces and even invisible lingual braces that are fitted onto the inner surfaces of the teeth are available at the clinic. Staff also use Invisalign - clear, plastic, custom-fitted splints that fit over the teeth and help straighten them without the need for braces. But the main strength of the clinic is the use of state-of-theart technology such as comput-
er-aided visualisation software to demonstrate various treatments and their effects allowing patients to gain an in-depth understanding of the proposed treatment. There is also a flexible, nofuss payment plan and costs of treatment and expected duration of treatment are always discussed beforehand, so there are no surprises. No referral is needed and before and after school appointments are available. The clinic at 236 Ormond Road, Narre Warren South, is open four days a week from Monday to Thursday. Phone 8790 6288.

And so Christmas has come and gone! The tree has been taken down and boxed up! The lights and decorations are in a tangled mess waiting to be unravelled again, and the midnight fireworks that brought in the new year - a distant memory. Where does the time go? It’s a worry! And so, as the month of January comes to a close, it’s time to iron those uniforms and pack those lunchboxes again. It’s time to go back to school! For most of the readership, that’s good news but for some it can be a time of anxiety and nervousness. For parents who are sending their children to school for the first time, it can be a very worrying and emotionally taxing experience. While it is natural for parents to feel this way - and important for them to show their children that they care for them and their wellbeing - they must remember to demonstrate confidence in their child’s ability to succeed at school. The early years of school are designed to establish the fundamentals of learning, therefore encouraging children to try new things, to ask lots of questions and to make new friends at school are vital ingredients to long-term educational success. Apart from anxious parents who are sending their children to school for the first time, there are also nervous parents who are send-
ing their children to a new school for the first time. Whether they’re in primary school transitioning to secondary school or moving to a new school from a different region, state or even country, sending children to a new school - for whatever reason - can be a challenging emotional experience. Understandably, it is a time of worry and apprehension for children and parents. Questions about whether it was the ‘right’ decision to make or whether they’ll ‘fit’ in can plague waking thought. But like starting a new job, it takes time to settle-in and integrate into a new learning environment. Parents who encourage their children to embrace change by promoting resilience, persistence and good organisational skills will help ease their child’s educational transition. Constant positive reinforcement, though support and encouragement, will do wonders for a child’s self-esteem and self-assurance. And then, before you know it, the Christmas tree is up again! The lights and decorations are being untangled and a new year looms on the horizon. All the anxiety and worry of the past gone! But don’t worry, it’s nearly time to iron those uniforms and pack those lunchboxes again. Where does the time go? That’s the real worry! Rob Kelly is a teacher and multimedia co-ordinator at Berwick Lodge Primary School. He will write about education matters for Star News Group throughout 2017. If you have any topics you would like Rob to address please email dailyeditor@starnewsgroup.com.au.

All changes set for reserve Female-friendly change rooms will be installed at Sweeney Reserve, Narre Warren South, as part of a $100,000 State Government grant. The funds will go towards a City of Casey project which is expected to cater for 50 extra young female footballers and two new female cricket teams.
The pavilion’s change rooms can’t currently be used by male and female players at the same time. Four female-friendly change rooms and a first aid room are part of the project. Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley said that
it was unacceptable that often female change rooms were rundown or non-existent, forcing women to use male change rooms and toilets - or their cars. “They deserve to have the same opportunities to play and compete in the sports they love,” she said.

Three times the effort By David Nagel The pieces of the puzzle are all coming together for Berwick youngster Rebecca Henderson - a splashing, pedalling and running machine. Already a member of the Triathlon Victoria Development Program which provides athletes with an avenue to state and national representation, the 15-year-old could quite easily have spent the summer resting on her laurels. But that’s not the way this young lady thinks. Instead she has spent the summer racking up podium finishes in open water swims, winning the 10km Victorian State Championship at Williamstown in December and qualifying for this weekend’s Australian Championships in Adelaide. Henderson will compete in both the 7.5km and 5km races at Adelaide’s Brighton Beach from 27 to 28 January.
And the Casey TigerSharks member will head into the championships in red-hot form. She has competed in open water swims around the bay and along the coast with stunning results coming her way. She won both the Mentone Open Water Swim and the Danger 1000 at Torquay, finished second in the Point Leo Swim Classic and the Rip View Swim Classic at Point Lonsdale, and finished third in the Rock 2 Ramp at Anglesea. She was also the overall winner of the Surf ‘n’ Turf category at Anglesea for the combined run and swim. And, swimming aside, it really has been a case of learning how to walk before she could run. As a 13-year-old she won gold medals in the walk at the Australian Junior and Victorian Little Athletics Championships before turning those small steps
into big ones. Running soon became a passion, then the swimming, with cycling the final frontier for a girl who has her sights set on the stars. Her talent was spotted quickly - with Triathlon Victoria selecting her for a development program and in only her fifth race, Henderson booked her place on the School Sports Victoria triathlon team. “We’d done a few triathlons before but it was just for fun and then we started taking it seriously,” Henderson said. “Someone told us about the trials for the development squad then we went and I got in. “I like that there’s swimming and running together and I like the bike, it’s pretty good now ... it’s great that there’s the three (sports) and not just one.” The pieces of the puzzle are all coming together for the Berwick College student.
Rebecca Henderson, also a star runner and cyclist, is off to Adelaide this week to compete in the Australian Open Water Swim Championships.
Lives spent in service By Garry Howe
The Sidwells toast Garry’s honour. Back from left, Tammy, Brent, David and Garry. Front are Billy, Brooke, Robyn and Mark.
Members of the Whiffen clan were on hand to celebrate Geoff’s life membership. Back from left, Malcolm McQualter, Lisa and Cindy Bourke and Lyn Whiffen. Middle: Joan McQualter, Robert Whiffen and Paul Whiffen. Front: Geoff Whiffen, Nolene Whiffen and Jessica Whiffen.
Cranbourne Turf Club recognised half a century of service, not only to racing locally but to the community as a whole, with the presentation of life memberships to long-serving committee members Geoff Whiffen and Garry Sidwell at last Friday night’s race meeting. Whiffen, the current chairman, has served on the committee for 30 years and Sidwell had a considerable stint as vicechairman during his 20-year tenure. Chief executive Neil Bainbridge led a chorus of praise for the two men, pointing out that they had not only taken a keen interest in the racing club, but the recreation reserve precinct as well. He said they were both heavily involved in moulding a master plan for the racing precinct. They join a select group of life members of the turf club, two of whom - long-time secretary-manager Yvonne Blackwood and chairman Robin Daley joined the celebration. The only two other living life members - John Finning and Dr Sam Birman - were apologies. Whiffen joined the turf club committee on 27 October 1987 and was immediately appointed to the Racecourse Development Sub-committee. He was already on the recreation reserve committee of management and has been chairman for the past 20 years. Whiffen has been a director of Trios since 2008 and is the
current chairman of that facility - a joint venture of the turf, harness and greyhound boards. “Geoff has hardly missed a meeting in his 30 years and in October 2012 the committee saw fit to appoint him as chairman of the club,” Bainbridge said. “People wouldn’t realise the number of hours he puts in to this place. He has a passion for this precinct and for Cranbourne in general.” Garry Sidwell joined the committee on 26 June 1996, replacing the former chairman John Finning. On the agenda that day was the construction of a ladies jockeys room and Wendy Kelly, the Group 1 winning trainer of Bon Hoffa, applied to train on the track. At that same meeting, the turf club moved to approach the other two codes about the prospect of a joint gaming venue. “Garry is always here first for meetings,” Bainbridge said. “Along with Geoff, he has played a big part in moulding the master plan for the racing complex.” Daley said the club had come a long way in the past 30 years. “Back then we had a gravel road to the course, you would come in from the highway and we parked the cars in the centre of the track.” Sidwell said it had been a privilege to work with such a diverse committee. “That’s why we are success-
ful, because we are diverse.” He paid tribute to “the love of my life, Robyn, who has been understanding and supportive for 46 years and many more to come”. Whiffen described his association with the club as a labour of love. “It’s been a big part of our family life,” he explained. “(Wife) Noelene’s mum has attended 50 Cranbourne Cups and (son) Paul could read a racebook before any other book. We love the club. “It’s been a pleasure to have met so many great people.” He mentioned Elaine Robinson and her late husband Dennis, also a life member, and their long association with the Williams family. Fittingly, champion jockey Craig Williams won the race named in Whiffen’s honour on the impressive Godolphin first starter Raptor. Williams made sure he popped up to the committee room to wish the two new life members well. “Cranbourne is very close to my heart,” he said. “I won a cup here on Dad’s horse as an apprentice, so my family liked me… at least for two nights,” he smiled. “Racing has taken me all over the world and to win a race named after Geoff Whiffen is a great privilege. It’s special every time I get to come home. “Cranbourne is a very progressive club.”

Swans storm up the ladder By Nick Creely VIC PREMIER REVIEW - ROUND 14 (DAY 2) In the space of just five matches, Casey-South Melbourne has lifted itself from cellar-dweller to a legitimate finals' threat, and on Saturday, the inspiring performance against powerhouse Fitzroy-Doncaster at Casey Fields was yet another thrilling chapter to a remarkable resurrection. First it was Luke Manders, who struck a wonderfully compiled maiden century last week, but now, Brendan Rose has taken his game to another level, taking 5/75 as the Lions were bowled out for 284, still 22-runs shy of victory. It was the perfect start for the Swans, as speedster Nathan Lambden (1/41) and Rose broke through early, but a series of slow and grinding partnerships ensured the Lions would allow themselves a chance to advance later in the day. With perennial run-machines Peter Dickson (67) and Lloyd Mash (87) putting on over 140 runs, all-rounder Dylan Hadfield (1/38) provided the moment of magic, dismissing the dangerous Dickson, before only a few overs later, Rose cracked the game open by removing Mash. It was then that the Swans found their killer instinct, and when Leigh Diston took a wonderful catch to end the game and Trent Lawford’s (40) resistance, the Swans erupted with joy, knowing that yet another scalp has been taken. And exciting quick Jackson Fry (2/17), who played a vital role with his line, length and aggression, said the win was huge for the club, its finals
Jackson Fry reacts to the key-scalp of Matthew Frith. 164039 hopes, but also praised the club for its stunning turnaround. “It was a massive win - it was a tight one and our fifth in a row and it gives us massive confidence going into the last three games, and really push into the finals,” he said. “We are in at the moment (topeight) and we have three winnable games so we would be disappointed if we didn’t make it - we are just going week-by-week and we will see what happens. “The win against St Kilda off the last ball got us going and was a turning point for us - if we had of lost that game who knows? “I played in the seconds against Frankston earlier in the year, and apparently Brian had a stern talk to the
boys after that loss, and we haven’t lost a game since. “We were going for a bottom-four finish at one stage - after that Frankston game we were second from the bottom - and now we are seventh in the matter of five games - We gave Fitzroy a rude shock.” But Fry heaped praise on two individuals, Brendan Rose, and the unsung hero Devin Pollock, who claimed six dismissals behind the stumps. “Brendan has bowled really well for over a year now - he has bowled without much luck this year and rapt to see him get five wickets,” he said. “Brian put it on us bowlers this game to step up - he was really pushing us and Rosey did that. “It was a great game for Devin also
Brendan Rose took his first five-wicket haul in the firsts. 164039 Pictures: STEWART CHAMBERS taking six catches- he has made more runs than any keeper in the comp and he’s a gun - he can play higher level cricket to be honest, the sky is the limit for him.” Looking ahead to another crunch clash against the lowly Greenvale Kan-
garoos, Fry said the confidence is skyhigh. “We are confident with bat and ball, but we know it will be tough away from home, and they will play with a point to prove, but we need to keep doing what we are doing.”
Matt and Steve to the rescue DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 8 (Day 1) Twin fifties to Matt Chasemore (55) and Steven Spoljaric (51) have rescued Cranbourne from a horror start to Heinz-Southern Districts. Winning the toss and batting, the Eagles couldn’t have scripted a more disastrous start, with Lucas Ligt (0) brilliantly caught in slips by Kaushalya Weeraratne and Brandon Tyzzer (3) run out in brilliant fashion by Lee Brown. To rub salt into the wounds, Jordan Cleland (5) was then caught behind off the bowling of Weeraratne (1/42), to leave the Eagles hanging by a thread at 3/14. But the dynamic legends Cheeks and Spoljaric battled it out, putting on an 89-run stand to keep the Cobras at bay. When Chasemore was eventually dismissed at 4/141, Luke Kerford, playing his first Turf 1 match this season, struck an impressive 39 to lift the Eagles to 220 by stumps. Lee Brown (2/47) was important with his tweakers, while Weeraratne and Michael Davies (1/40) were electric with the new ball. Rajith Jayathunga has crunched an attacking 83 to lift Buckley Ridges to a competitive 191 against powerhouse Springvale South. In a potentially season-defining clash for the Bucks, in which their finals hopes may hang on the balance against
a highly powered opposition, they dug deep and found a way to keep the Bloods sweating. The Bloods were led well by Rajith Priyan (3/32), Tim Ford (2/35) and Craig Slocombe (3/19) with the ball, who all bowled tidily. Slocombe in particular has been extraordinary since his five-wicket-haul in Round 5 against Dandy West, bowling his tweakers to great effect once again, bowling 13 overs in another wonderful display by the DDCA legend Narre Warren have set themselves up for one serious tilt at a major scalp, having their finest day of the season against the ladder-leaders Hallam-Kalora Park. Winless and languishing bottom of the table, Janaka Liyanabadalge (62) once again stood tall for the Magpies with the bat, as the Hawks struggled for the most part with the ball, and the Magpies compiled 213 off 70.2 overs, their highest score of the season. There has been very little to cheer about, with outright losses plaguing a season full of departures and uncompetitive performances for the Magpies. In reply, the Hawks are 0/18, still 195 runs shy of avoiding the season’s biggest shock. It’s been an impressive turnaround for Dingley, who are in the box seat to secure a secondconsecutive victory, after a solid day of work against North Dandenong at Lois Twohig. With both sides still well
and truly in the Turf 1 race, the Dingoes elected to bowl in the critical contest. With Jurgen Andersen and his chargers looking to post a hefty total, the Dingoes bowled with great discipline, bowling the Maroons out for 160 despite another solid knock to opening bat Nasrat Malikzada (44). And the Dingoes have started brightly with the blade, with star opener Matthew Hague (30 not out) and Ryan McLean (32) leaving them at 1/63 at stumps, eyeing off another impressive win. Fourteen wickets have tumbled as Mordialloc and Berwick battle out a tough clash at Ben Kavanagh Reserve. In what is likely to be one of the most vital matches of the season, the Bloodhounds were rolled for 101, with James Wilcock (5/32) starring with the ball once again and Jarrod Armitage (2/25) providing great support. In reply, the Bears are 4/59 after batting a couple of hours late in the day. In another-wicket frenzy, cellar-dweller sides Parkfield and Dandenong West are locked in a close battle at Greaves Reserve. Sent into bat, the Parkers were rolled for 123, with Jamie Brown (4/28) doing the damage and veteran Peter Atkinson (3/37) also continuing his fine season. In reply, the Bulls are 4/40 off 32 overs, with Matthew Aslett (2/21) doing a fine job early.

Giving it their best By David Nagel Just one hour a week can change lives. It would seem a very small price to pay for men across the south-east who can make a real difference in helping young people help break the cycle of disadvantage. TRY Mentoring has been helping the young people of Melbourne for more than 130 years and is looking for male volunteers to help it with the great work it does in the community. And blokes out there - it’s as simple as being yourself. In fact, if you can be a friend, you can be a great mentor. Former AFL star and current Narre Warren Football Club coach Heath Black will be the guest speaker at an information session held by TRY Mentoring at 7pm on Thursday 9 February at Holm Park Reserve in Beaconsfield. TRY Mentoring co-ordinator Netty Bailey said that small investment of time can make a huge difference to a young person in need. “For a young person from a disadvantaged background, a positive mentor can change their life,” Bailey said. “All our research says they will be less likely to use drugs or alcohol, or
find themselves in trouble with the police. “And they will be more likely to go to school and develop good relationships with their family and friends. “Just as prevention is much more effective than a cure, mentoring a young person is a proven early intervention that will help them create a positive life trajectory.” Approximately 71 per cent of boys who need help come from the growth corridor in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne. The ages range from seven to 25 with most sitting in the 10 to 16 age bracket. “There are some amazing men out there who can make a real difference,” Bailey said. “Particularly from sporting clubs because men in that environment already nurture and mentor young men. “But really we’re looking for anyone with the heart to help.” TRY currently runs two kinds of mentoring programs across the Melbourne metropolitan area. In the One-to-One Program, mentors and mentees have contact three to four times a month, usually for an

TRY will assess the volunteer and then give all the necessary training and support - volunteers won’t be thrown in the deep end. MiTH (Mentoring in the Hood) is a group program where young people and mentors come together in an activ-

Carnival unlocks greyhound line-up By Bridget Scott The Warragul Greyhound Racing Club (WGRC) will host its night of nights this week, with a magnificent line-up of greyhounds set to compete for The Endeavour Locksmiths Group 2 Warragul Cup (460m). A high-class field of sprinters from right across the country will compete for the $47,000 first prize on Saturday 28 January and aim to chase down a share of more than $800,000 in prize money being distributed throughout the Gippsland Carnival. The Gippsland Carnival is a new initiative incorporating the Sale, Warragul, Cranbourne and Traralgon greyhound clubs, linking together their four cups, with a Gippsland Champion Sprinter and Gippsland Champion Stayer crowned at the end of the carnival. The stayers will show their strength over Warragul’s 680m course on cup night as they vie for points to earn the title of the carnival’s top stayer. Warragul-born Western Bulldogs captain Bob Murphy was announced as the ambassador for the carnival and attended the launch in the Gippsland coastal town of Seaspray.
The rich Gippsland Carnival, launched on the beach at Seaspray late last year, comes to Warragul on Saturday night for the big cup meeting. “The carnival brings the region together for the first time with all the races linked and shines a light on Gippsland,” Murphy said. “Coming from Warragul, I’ve been to the track many times and would encourage anyone in the area on 28 January to get along to the cup meeting because it will be a fantastic night of greyhound racing with plenty of entertainment off the track.”
Warragul’s feature night will be held as a twilight meeting followed by Cranbourne taking centre stage on 11 February and Traralgon wrapping up the carnival with a grand finale on 25 March. If the entertainment on the track isn’t enough to keep visitors occupied, there will be plenty more happening which will cater for all members of the family.
An alcohol-free area will feature Greyhound Adoption Program volunteers with their dogs to meet and pat, a special kids’ zone with Turbo the mascot, live entertainment, local food trucks and Greyhound Racing Victoria’s own spin on the Fashions on the Field. With an underlying theme of ‘flying colours’, Colours on Course will give everyone a chance to win a prize for best dressed, with judges looking for the most stylish representation of the colours and patterns of all eight greyhounds. Families can also go in the draw to win a trip to Disneyland by getting their ‘passport’ stamped at two of the four cups. Full details on all packages at gippslandcarnival.com.au. Greyhound racing generates about $40 million for the Gippsland economy and employs hundreds of local people from the area. Across Victoria, greyhound racing makes a substantial contribution of more than $300 million to the economy, employing more than 3000 people and generating $1.8 billion in wagering.
Arch-rivals come together By David Nagel They’re arch-enemies on the court, but when it comes to a good cause, the Berwick Netball Club is more than happy to help out its cross-creek rival Beaconsfield. The Wickers combined the opening of their 2017 season with a fundraising effort to support Beaconsfield player Ciara Nelson, a 17-year-old who after a recent fall discovered a tumour in her brain stem. The treatment options for Ciara include a range of extremely costly procedures, including gamma knife surgery in Sydney, Cyberknife treatment in Perth, or even proton therapy in the United States. Saturday’s fundraising effort raised about $3000 which will go directly to Ciara and her family.

months but I couldn’t be prouder of the endless amount of work the committee put in and how everyone dug deep to support Ciara and her family. I actually had a tear in my when I was
addressing the group ... it was very moving to be a part of.” Ciara has a GoFundMe page set up to try to raise as much money as possible towards her treatment.
Good results for ladder leaders BERWICK BOWLS SATURDAY PENNANT Saturday greeted bowlers with very pleasant conditions and greens running well at the Berwick Bowls Club. Berwick hosted teams from MCC, Pakenham, Clayton and Bennetswood with some very close matches on the day. Berwick's three sides - who have been top of the ladder - should all maintain their positions after posting great wins. The third and fourth sides had convincing wins while the sixth side fought out a close encounter with a strong Bennetswood side. The number one side fought out a great battle with a formidable team from MCC going down by just a small margin. Berwick 1 (75-5) defeated by MCC (79-13) Berwick 2 (64-4) defeated by Moorabbin (78-14) Berwick 3 (86-16) defeated Pakenham (68-2) Berwick 4 (81-15) defeated Clayton (61-3) Berwick 5 (54-0) defeated by Hampton Park (93-18) Berwick 6 (78-16) defeated Bennetswood (73-2) Berwick 7 (77-2) defeated by Heathmont (91-16) MIDWEEK PENNANT - Round 13 Tuesday presented very hot and oppressive conditions for all of the Midweek teams and the Berwick sides could only manage to notch up one win for the week. The next round will offer an opportunity to build and all sides are up for the challenge. Berwick 1 (39-2) defeated by Glen Waverley (68-16) Berwick 2 (41-0) defeated by Vermont South (73-16) Berwick 3 (58-2) defeated by Pakenham (71-14) Berwick 4 (43-2) defeated by Glen Eira McKinnon (60-14) Berwick 5 (64-14) defeated Noble Park (51-2) Berwick 6 - bye WEDNESDAY Triples Social Bowls - 1st: K Crook, D McWatters and B Saunders; 2nd: B Gladman, F Di Castella and R Lake; 3rd: J Heggart, J Smyth and N Byrd; 4th: K Lapinskas, J Kershaw and B McIntyre.
Players ready to dart off The best dart players from around the region will need to build up their brownie points over the next few weeks with a Valentine’s Day start to the 2017 season. Eight teams will compete in the South West Gippsland Dart League, stretching far and wide from the Longwarry Hotel to the Gembrook RSL. Those two teams will be joined by sides from Castello’s Hotel Pakenham, the Pakenham Hotel, the Beaconsfield Central Hotel, the Pine Grove Hotel, Kooweerup Hotel and the Nar Nar Goon Hotel for the Tuesday night competition. After 16 rounds, two semi-finals and a preliminary final will be played before the grand final shootout on 16 June. Round one match-ups include Gembrook v Longwarry, Paky One (Castello’s) v New Railway (Pakenham Hotel), Beacy Red (Central) v Mudderz (Pine Grove) and Kooweerup v The Bullets from Nar Nar Goon. Scores and ladders will be included weekly throughout the season in the Pakenham Gazette.

Matt's major milestone By David Nagel Kooweerup champion Matt Davey will celebrate a remarkable milestone on Australia Day today when the Demons take on Pakenham in a WGCA blockbuster at Denhams Road. The legendary all-rounder will celebrate 25 years of senior cricket -and about 400 games- when the top-two teams collide in a game that will have a huge bearing on the destination of this year’s flag. It’s rather ironic really, with Davey having a huge influence on the destiny of many premierships in the past. Uncompromising, ruthless, but very fair, Davey has played a key role in eight premierships with the Demons since his under-12 debut as a seven year-old almost 30 years ago. He took 5/7 in just his second game ... and has been influencing cricket matches ever since. This game, which will be completed on Saturday 4 February, coincides with another great contest between third and fourth on the ladder when Tooradin makes the trip to Cardinia. Round 12, the return of 80-over two-day cricket, the top-four do battle, the celebration of a club icon - homeand-away cricket just doesn’t get any
better than this! The run home to this year’s premiership -it begins now. The Lions ended Kooweerup’s dream of going back-to-back-to-back last year in a grand final classic, as expected played in great spirit and going all the way down to the wire. The Lions are the heir apparent to the Demons’ dynasty, just last weekend adding the WGCA Twenty20 crown to its Premier Division success in March. Captain of that T20-winning team, Jack Anning, says the Lions are excited to be part of Davey’s and Kooweerup’s big day. “I’m not even 25 years old, so for him to be playing for that long and still be one of the best players in the competition is remarkable to me,” Anning said. “To have a grand final record like his, how he stands up under pressure, it’s something we can all aspire to. We’re excited to be playing in a game that honours him; hopefully we can pick him up cheaply and then have a beer after the game and celebrate what has been a magnificent career.” The Lions will go in chock-full of confidence after skipper Dom Paynter (3/20) claimed a career-first hat-trick in the Lions three-wicket win over Up-
per Beaconsfield. Paynter capitalised on some late-order urgency from the Maroons, knocking over the stumps of Scott Pitcher (8), catching the edge of Kyle Gibbs (0) before cart-wheeling the stumps of an over-zealous Tiron Fernando (0) to chalk up cricket’s version of a hole-inone. Fernando took an almighty swing at the ball, and missed, sending a large crowd, which included the Lions life members and sponsors into raptures. Kooweerup’s classy top three of Mark Cooper (44 not out), Chris O’Hara (26) and Ben Spicer (29) made light work of Merinda Park’s (116) modest total at Donnelly Reserve, while former Tooradin skipper Aaron Avery (71) returned to form in the Seagulls 69-run victory over Pakenham Upper/Toomuc. It was his first half-century in the Premier Division in exactly two years and exactly what the doctor ordered as a potent list heads for the promised land. And the Cardinia quartet of Travis Wheller (3/18), Dwayne Doig (3/26), Neil Barfuss (42) and Ricky Campbell (38) proved too hot for Emerald to handle at Chandler Reserve. It’s now full steam ahead for the

Warriors ready for battle royal By David Nagel The West Gippsland Warriors will take a team chock full of all-round talent to this year’s Country Week, which begins on Monday 30 January. Country Week is a carnival where the very best country cricketers from around the state converge on metropolitan Melbourne to put their skills to the ultimate test. The Warriors have not tasted success since 2009, when Kooweerup all-rounder Shane ‘The Great Man’ Dole led the WGCA to the Division 3 title. But that could all be about to change with the Warriors picking a versatile and experienced line up. Of the 14 players selected, only Kooweerup batsman Ben Spicer has been selected for a specific purpose - to make runs, and make plenty. The side includes 11 true allrounders and two keeper-batsmen with Rob Elston and Chris Bright both more than proficient in both aspects of the game. Despite some key absences, Warriors manager Phil Anning is looking forward to a competitive performance from the cream of the competition. “I love Country Week, it’s been a tradition for our association for many years and I think we’ve picked a side that can perform well,” Anning said. “We’ve picked the best team available, and while it won’t be easy I’m pretty confident that these are the boys that can get us back to division two.” Anning said the players will enjoy the experience. “It’s more than the cricket experience at Country Week, it’s about getting to know your peers and I can’t wait to spend a week away with a quality bunch of young men,” he said. The Warriors came close to success last year with two early wins
Dom Paynter - Pakenham (Captain) followed by two narrow losses. Emerald star AJ Walker led the run-scoring last year and will be keen to do so again, while Devon Meadows lefty Matt Hutchinson -the reigning Glasscock Medallist will lead the bowling attack. Pakenham skipper Dom Paynter will lead the Warriors into battle with Walker his deputy. The Warriors have a bye on Monday before beginning their campaign with a long drive to Melton to take on Seymour.
