A year-long investigation has confirmed four bullying incidents at City of Greater Geelong in “at least a decade”. “Several” staff were sacked or resigned over the incidents, City Hall confirmed to the Indy this week. Former mayor Darryn Lyons said the findings exposed the justification for sacking Geelong’s council last April as “absolute b......t”, especially since the review covered the City’s 20year history. “It beggars belief, this,” he said. Hands off Australia Day, city revellers tell critics By Luke Voogt Geelong revellers have told activists to keep their hands off Australia Day after calls for a new date. Locals expressed their support for the national day as thousands flocked to Rippleside Park and the waterfront to celebrate yesterday. Max Ginley, whose wife Emma became a citizen in 2009, called on federal politicians to protect the date. “There’s too much of this now,” he said. “What’s Australia coming to? When are the politicians going to stand up for it?” Marrianne Carrodus said Australia Day was about bringing people together. Her friend, Elle Cahill, was “getting sick” of calls to change the date.
Chantel King acknowledged that some Indigenous people considered 26 January “Invasion Day” but was happy for the national celebration’s date to remain unchanged “It’s more about celebrating the good things about Australia today,” she said. Ms King described an online campaign to change Australia Day to May 8 - because it sounds like ‘mate’ - as “pretty cool”. Local Indigenous woman Anette Xiberras said many Aboriginals used Australia Day to think of others who fought for their freedom. “It wasn’t until 1967 we were actually recognised as Australian citizens,” she told the Indy last week. “Today we’re still fighting to bridge the gap.
“When Australia Day first started Indigenous people used to throw wreaths in the bay to represent all the Indigenous people killed by European settlers.” But Ms Xiberras did not consider Australia Day celebrations offensive. “Two wrongs don’t make a right and let’s face it we all love a holiday but I’d rather see Australia Day celebrated during NAIDOC week.” Geelong council administrator Peter Dorling acknowledged the Indigenous community at the council’s citizenship ceremony. “We ... empathise with their feelings about celebrating the beginning of Australia on a date that marks the colonisation of what was originally their land by another country.”
PROUD: Rubab and Gulfam Ramzan hold their new Australian certificates with immediate family Ahmad, Mohammad and Qadri. 164225
An arts project enlivening disused North Geelong factories will expand with more works depicting “the rich history of the area”, the State Government has announced. The government said a $35,000 grant for #VacantGeelong would put more artists on site to work in collaboration with ex-workers, residents and university students.
Shooting suspects Two men who rode in a black hatchback sedan could hold important clues to a double shooting at Norlane last month, according to police. The sedan was at the scene when two other men, aged 58 and 30, suffered serious gunshot injuries on 30 December, police said.
Improvements ‘needed’ An independent review has “identified areas for improvement” in a tender process that controversially removed Anglesea Caravan Park’s family management, according to Victoria’s Environment Minister. Lily D’Ambrosio (pictured) said she now wanted an “urgent meeting” with the chair of Surf Coast’s foreshore body “to make it clear what the expectations are for committees of management”.
Fault fire An air-conditioner malfunction caused a fire that gutted Torquay’s Peaches fruit and vegetable shop on Monday night, according to police. Fund-raisers began seeking donations to assist the store’s family owners after police estimated the damage cost at more than $1 million.
Foot screwed Pain from a screw surgically inserted into a foot fracture has further set back the return of young Cat Cory Gregson, the club has revealed. The club expected Gregson to resume “light training” in 10 weeks after surgery to remove the screw, football manager Steve Hocking said.
Our imam welcomes wife, daughter as official citizens By Luke Voogt The wife and daughter of Geelong’s imam were among 28 new citizens officially sworn in during a Geelong Australia Day ceremony yesterday. Gulfam Ramzan and husband Mohammad migrated from Lahore, Pakistan, to England when daughter Rubab was a month old before arriving in Australia in 2012. Rubab, known by mates as Ruby, said she and her mother were proud to officially become citizens. “It’s a diverse culture here and it’s really great to be a part of that.” Ruby described Australia as “more chilled” than England, apart from the weather.
“There everyone’s busy all the time,” the 19-year-old said, “It’s a lot warmer here and the people are very friendly. You have more time to spend with your family.” Ruby had come to love Australia’s clean, bluewater beaches during her family’s travels around the country. “It’s a really beautiful country,” she said. Ruby said the Geelong community welcomed her family and was especially supportive when the city’s mosque burned down last year. “I feel like Australia Day is a day everyone can get together and we can all just live in harmony. It’s what makes Australia what it is.” Gulfam was proud to be “officially adopted” by Australia.
“I’m very happy here. It’s mostly untouched and close to nature. “Because of less population there is less trouble and havoc.” But with her new citizenship came responsibility, Gulfam said. “It is very peaceful here unlike many places in world. We want to help make Australia greater and an even nicer place to live.” Mohammad Ramzan and his 14-year-old and 16-year-old sons became Australian citizens in October but his wife and daughter had to wait because they were not dependents. “To me Australia Day means multiculturalism, tolerance and mateship,” he said. “Australia is a beautiful country and full of opportunities for myself and my children.”
Mould repairs Work is under way to reopen Barwon Heads Senior Citizens’ building after a mould outbreak, City Hall has announced. Some ceiling areas would be replaced but soft furnishings were cleared of contamination following a “surface mould assessment”, City Hall’s Linda Quinn said.
Young futures A new support program will help up to 100 vulnerable young people in Geelong “reach their potential”, according to Geelong MP Christine Couzens. The first State funding in six years specifically for youth workers would give the youths “the support they need”, Ms Couzens said.

Tuning in to Kids A program for parents of children aged 2 to 8 years Tuning in to Kids is a six session parenting program designed to foster children’s emotional development by building their emotional intelligence and resilience. Children develop greater emotional awareness and ability to regulate their own emotions and solve problems as they arise. The program provides an opportunity for parents to enhance the quality of their relationships with their children while providing ongoing guidance of children’s behaviour by setting appropriate limits.

Sydney has its opera house, Melbourne its casino and Adelaide is the city of churches. And now there’s Geelong, home of the ovoid sewer aqueduct. Yes, the State Government might have a hard sell on its hands with its plans for the city’s newest attraction - a vast, undeveloped parkland at Breakwater with a disused sewage pipe as its centrepiece. According to the Government, the proposed 66-hectare parkland will be equipped with “viewing platforms, signage and seating”, presumably for users to admire the decommissioned fudge funnel that is, of course, heritage listed. Water Minister and Bellarine MP Lisa Neville called the park “an exciting proposal for the Geelong community”. And possibly even more exciting for local tourism boss Roger Grant (pictured) as he considers how to weave a sewer park into regional marketing material. Meanwhile, the Geelong region seems to be
providing inspiration for creative types, namely young musicians. Hard rock band Ocean Grove has been shaking alternative charts for the past year, even though the band hails from Melbourne. And now solo act Lost Animal, also from Melbourne, is on tour to support his latest album, You Yang. But our localities still have much more to offer in the naming stakes. Breakwater: it just sounds like a folk band, or perhaps the name for a quick roadside stop on the way to see one. Indented Head: heavy metal, for sure, or perhaps a punk group. Lovely Banks: a middled-aged a cappella outfit. Drumcondra: perfect for those roaming hippies with tribal drums at community markets. And finally, Queenscliff: a tribute to the music of Queen and Cliff Richard. Readers are invited to make further suggestions - anyone for Moolap?
Gremlins must have infested last week’s Indy, or was it next November’s Indy? After all, the dateline on the front page was ‘Friday 20 November 2017’. Readers must have been intrigued by the local news of the future - and dismayed at the absence of November’s Tatts numbers or results from Flemington! Then a story in Finally Friday revealed that local crooner Denis Walter would perform “power ballet” in a show at Geelong RSL. Hopefully he’ll wear reinforced tights on the night - wouldn’t want to risk a power failure during the splits in front of an RSL crowd! Perhaps Denis should stick to his usual power ballads instead. And the gaffes didn’t stop there, with a headline on the letters page inventing the word ‘surrending’. It should have been ‘surrendering’. Sheesh. What a week. Publish and be damned? More like damned publishing!
Council review finds ‘four bullying incidents in 10 years’ From page 1 “It should have never resulted in the sacking. “Four cases over 20 years to me seems quite bizarre.” A City Hall spokesperson confirmed the bullying incidents “date back at least a decade”. City Hall released a statement earlier this week saying the review had resolved 38 cases and was still investigating seven complaints. But following Indy inquiries the City confirmed that “four (of the 38) resulted in substantiated bullying and harassment”. “Several“ staff left following related disciplinary actions, the City further clarified. The City declined to put a precise number how
many staff were sacked or resigned over the four confirmed incidents but ’several’ is generally defined as “more than two but not many”. The City has around 2700 staff. Mr Lyons said the four bullying incidents did not involve councillors. “People (councillors) raised their voice behind closed doors but at the end of the day that’s passion about their beliefs and what’s right for the city.” Melbourne HR specialist David Simpson described any amount of bullying as unacceptable. But the four confirmed incidents in Geelong were “not high if they occured over a decade”, Mr Simpson said. “Bullying is quite a serious charge in the workplace (but) you would find other councils with
similar numbers and facing similar cultural issues.” The State Government sacked Geelong’s council in April, citing an alleged “culture of bullying” described in an independent 2015 report on City Hall’s workplace culture. The ongoing ratepayer-funded investigation continues to pour over claims in the Halliday report, including the seven bullying complaints yet to be verified. City Hall declined to disclose the cost of the investigation so far but the spokesperson described it “as a very necessary investment”. “Delicate processes such as these are very time-consuming and require expert resourcing,” the spokesperson said. © Sam Hobson (UK) Nosy Neighbour

Project officer Janelle Hearn said the Equip Program was about the teens getting vital work experience within their new community. “There’s nothing more Aussie than being a surf lifesaver.” “We know how hard it is for young people to get a job now so you can imagine how hard it would be for people from a refugee background.” Ms Hearn thanked the TSLSC and the club’s captain Tony White welcoming “these young people with open arms”.

Confirmation of Melbourne as the State Government’s proposed home for a $5 billion army project has ignited a war of words in Geelong. The government this week identified Fisherman’s Bend as the host of Land 400 if Victoria beat South Australia’s bid to build the combat vehicles. The Turnbull Government effectively rubbed Geelong out of the running in July when it cut the local Team Sentinel from a shortlist of bidders. Reports last year suggested city leaders might try to lure one of the remaining bidders to Geelong but the Andrews Government confirmed on Wednesday that any Victorian work would be in Melbourne. “This is frankly a disgrace”, said Federal Liberal MP Sarah Henderson, who lobbied for Geelong. “Prior to the 2014 election, Premier Andrews promised that Geelong would be the preferred home of Land 400. This represents a rolled-gold broken election commitment. “Daniel Andrews and (Industry Minister) Wade Noonan need to explain why they did nothing to convince these defence companies to set up operations in Geelong.” Mr Noonan accused Ms Henderson of “confusing matters” when she publicly urged the government to locate Victoria’s bid in Geelong despite the Team Sentinel failure. He urged her to work with the State on securing the contract for Victoria. Labor’s Federal Corio MP Richard Marles said Ms Henderson was trying to shift blame for her party scotching Geelong’s bid. “Last time I checked Sarah Henderson was a member of the government making this decision. She should start delivering by advocating inside her own party instead of passing the buck to the State Government.”

Six dedicated refugee teens are diving headfirst into the culture of their new country at Torquay Surf Life Saving Club (TSLSC). Say K Pu Dreamer is one of the group getting involved in the iconic Aussie pastime through Diversitat’s Equip Program. “I was really scared of water,” the 17-year-old said. “But when we went to play on the beach I felt much more comfortable. We’re all like family.” Say grew up in Thai refugee camp after her family fled persecution in Myanmar decades ago, living off monthly rations of mostly rice and fish paste. “It’s really hard to go outside - you don’t have any normal freedom,” she said. “I have a lot of friends who still live there.” She now lives in Corio with her family after migrating three years ago, and is in her final year of VCE while working part time. “My mum’s cousin was already living in Australia - he helped us to come here,” she said. Say was looking forward to Australia Day this week, which for her has a special significance: “One of my close friends (from the refugee camp) came over on Australia Day so I’ll probably hang out with her.” Say dreams of becoming a police officer and hopes volunteering in Torquay will increase her prospects. “I would like to do a job where I can help the community,“ she said. Tamil asylum seeker Sathees Santhrakumar said the Equip Program had taught him the “life skill” of swimming. “If I know how to swim I can protect myself and I can protect other people,” he said. “When I came to Australia I had people looking after me so I want to give back.” The 18-year-old Sri Lankan came to Australia alone by boat at the age of 14. He spoke no English at the time. “My parents were planning to come them-

‘Climate, pricing’ water boss focus
By Luke Voogt
Barwon Water will have a “stronger focus on climate change” while maintaining affordability and service as “priorities” under its new boss, according to chair Jo Plummer. Tracey Slatter also had workplace diversity on her stronger-focus list after taking over from exmanaging director Joe Adamski this week, Ms Plummer said. Ms Slatter brought to Barwon Water “skills and experience” from her previous job as City of Port Phillip’s chief executive officer. “This is a crucial role in guiding and leading the corporation through what is expected to be a challenging but exciting period,” Ms Plummer TAKEOVER: New Barwon said. Water boss Tracey Slatter. “While customer affordability and customer service will remain priorities, there will be a stronger focus on climate change, further regional growth, liveability, environmental stewardship, community engagement and diversity in the workplace,” she said. Ms Slatter took over from water industry veteran Mr Adamski on Monday after the government appointed her to the role in October. Barwon Water said she had “more than 20 years of experience in local government and the Victorian public service”. Ms Slatter said she was delighted to return to the Geelong region after previous roles as Colac Otway Shire chief and TAC’s head of claims. Key projects under way, including Barwon Water’s $29 million headquarters redevelopment, made now a “particularly exciting time” to join the organisation, she said. “One of the highlights of my first few days was touring the head office redevelopment in Ryrie Street. It will be a flexible, modern workplace, accommodate all of Barwon Water’s Geelong-based employees under one roof, drive efficiencies and improve environmental performance.

Geelong police are hunting for arsonists after a deliberately lit fire destroyed one classroom and damaged others at Newcomb Park Primary School on Tuesday night. Principal Julie Warren described the damaged building, which housed students from Prep to Grade 3, as the “hub of the school”. “Look it now,” said an emotional Ms Warren as she walked through the charred and melted ruins on Wednesday. “This was just such a really safe place for these kids. It was our favourite building and (the fire) has taken that away from us.” The multi-classroom hub was the home of assemblies, concerts, graduations and other wholeschool activities, Ms Warren said. “It’s devastating to our school community. But the people who support (the students) are still here and we’ll take our strength from each other.” She said the school would involve its students in the eventual redesign and rebuilding of the hub. “Our kids are at the centre of everything we do,” she said. The schools’ teachers, students and parents past and present - were at the school on Wednesday to help clean up. “I emailed all the staff at 2am knowing they would see it on social media the next day,” Ms Warren said. “The response of staff and parents has been outstanding. It’s really good to see how people support each other - it’s what brings us together.” The hub’s four resident lizards and tortoise survived the blaze. “That was our priority today - to get them out and make sure they were safe,” Ms Warren said. The same can’t be said for the school’s stationary supplies and personal belongings which were destroyed by the fire. “There’ll be lots of things we won’t be able to replace,” Ms Warren said. Earlier on Wednesday arson detectives inves-

GLENYS SMITH SCHOOL CROSSING SUPERVISOR
CITY NEWS
43 years of helping kids to cross safely. If you live in the Highton area, you’re sure to recognise this friendly face. Glenys Smith has been supervising the South Valley Road school crossing since the Victorian-wide program began back in 1974. What started out as convenient way to earn some money while her children were young turned into a lifelong career - and passion - for Glenys. The best part of the job? “All the children and people; chatting to them all. I’m known for it!” laughs Glenys. “I’ve formed so many friendships over the years - not only with the ones that cross the road, but the ones who walk up and down South Valley Road as well as those who live nearby.” Glenys said a highlight of the job is seeing second generations come through her crossing. “You help kids across and then years later you get to help their kids cross. It’s lovely to see.” Glenys has no plans of slowing down. “I don’t know how long I’ll do it for, but year after year I keep fronting up.” She hopes the new flashing signs and additional road markings at the South Valley Road crossing will encourage drivers to slow down. Keep an eye out for Glenys and our other crossing supervisors who help ensure kids’ safety at 176 school crossings around the region. Make sure you slow down to 40km/h during the signed times.

GENERAL EVENT TRAFFIC ADVICE Latrobe Terrace (Princes Highway) in Geelong and the Geelong Ring Road will remain open at all times during the weekend to ensure north/south traffic through the City of Greater Geelong is maintained. Rolling road closures will be utilised to stage the Elite Races. If you are travelling along or across the course as a rolling road closure comes through: • You will be stopped by the lead police vehicle and asked to park in a safe area on the side of the road. You will have to wait for the race to pass through; once the race has passed the police tail car will inform you that it is safe to move on. Please be aware that there may be some tail riders still on the road. • It is estimated that you will have to wait for no longer than 15-20 minutes.
The rolling road closure will be supported by some fixed road closures to assist in keeping the course roads free of traffic when the race is coming through. Temporary road closures will be in Geelong, Barwon Heads and Torquay. All major intersections remain open, other than when the race passes by. For a full listing of road closures refer to the table above or visit www.cadelevansgreatoceanroadrace.com.au or www.eventsgeelong.com.au and search for Cadel. Alternatively download the Geelong City App and search for road closures. Parking along the courses will be restricted in many areas to ensure the roads are clear for the races. Parking restrictions will come into effect earlier on race days than the stated race times, so please look for any advisory signage prior to parking.
12337734-MD4-17
Emergency access is a priority and will always take precedence over the event. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times during the events via existing footpaths. Where roads are closed for short periods, access across roads will be via marshalled course crossing points. Due to the large volume of cyclists on the roads during the event you should take extra care when crossing the course roads. Residents and businesses located on the course roads have been sent detailed advice regarding local access arrangements during the event. If you are located on the course roads and have not received that advice, please call the event traffic help line on 0497 816 467.
FOOD TRUCK FRIDAY IS BACK 3 FEBRUARY
Public transport bus timetables have been altered across the weekend to avoid the course roads. Revised public transport timetables are available from www.ptv.vic.gov.au/events
Make your way to Little Malop Central (Little Malop Street, between Moorabool and Yarra streets) to enjoy some yummy lunch between 11.30am and 2.30pm. The line up of gourmet food trucks changes each month, meaning new and exciting options and flavours are available every Food Truck Friday (first Friday of each month). You'll also enjoy live entertainment and outdoor seating.
Questions relating to the traffic conditions and information? Please contact the event organiser at traffic@cadelevansgreatoceanroadrace.com.au or call the event traffic help line on 0497 816 467. For general information about the event please visit www.cadelevansgreatoceanroadrace.com.au

Geelong mayor vote ‘our goal’ By Luke Voogt
SAVED: Barwon Water could redevelop land around Breakwater's disused aqueduct for parkland.
State reveals aqueduct 'park' plans
1232141-ACM25-16
State Government unveiled plans Wednesday to develop 66 hectares of public parkland around Barwon Water’s heritage-listed ovoid sewer aqueduct at Breakwater. Water Minister Lisa Neville said the proposal would help share the “significant heritage and biodiversity values of the area”. “It would boost recreational use of the Barwon River by reopening a section that has been closed to the public for more than 20 years.” Parliamentary Secretary for Water Anthony Carbines visited the site to make the announcement. “We’ll continue to work with our water industry to unlock the recreational benefits of our waterways,” he said. The announcement comes after the Indy last September revealed Barwon Water’s plans to build parklands at the site. Barwon Water managing director Tracey Slatter said the authority had been investigating options for improving public access to the riverside
land for years. “Public safety has to be front of mind, and we look forward to hearing from the community through our engagement process.” The 756-metre aqueduct allowed Geelong’s first main outfall sewer pipe to cross over the Barwon River from 1916 to 1992. Authorities prohibited access under the structure - both on land and water -since 1995 due to the risk of falling concrete. Barwon Water’s plan involves removing some aqueduct spans, subject to Heritage Victoria approval, to allow safe access to the river and bank. The authority plans to retain the majority of the historic structure. The parkland proposal also provides for walking tracks, viewing platforms, signage and seating on the north side of the river. Barwon Water has worked closely with the Barwon River Parklands Steering Committee, Heritage Victoria and other agencies, and is seeking feedback from the broader community.
The door is still open for Geelong’s residents to elect their mayor following the final meeting of a ‘citizens’ jury’ Saturday. An election process for the mayoral vote was one of Geelong Citizens’ Jury’s 11 “aspirational recommendations”. “I’m quite proud of it really,” Highton ‘juror’ Sarah Gofton said. “I feel much happier now seeing that we’ve got a model for a directly-elected mayor.” The conditions required the mayoral candidate to be a councillor and to have served at least one term in council before running. The jury also proposed a cap on advertising spending for the mayoral campaign. “It’s just so we’re not disadvantaging someone with small pockets,” Ms Gofton said. But Geelong residents will still likely miss out on the vote next election, scheduled for October, after the jury controversially recommended scrapping it. The jury made the “practical recommendation” for councillors to elect the mayor after a narrow vote in November. Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins last year foreshadowed that the State Government would act on the recommendation. Only 41 of the original 100 jurors attended Saturday’s additional meeting and handed their final report to Ms Hutchins. Ms Gofton said the turnout was “disappointing” but pointed out jurors were not paid for the additional meeting and many had summer commitments. “I also think some were disillusioned because of some of the negative press it got,” she said. “But we still had all the diverse arguments and conversations.”
The jury’s aspiration recommendations included mandatory questionnaires for council candidates, forcing candidates to declare campaign donations and forbidding developers from donating. Ms Gofton said prohibiting developer contributions to campaigns would bring Geelong’s council “in line with the rest of Australia”. The jury also proposed a junior council, broadcasting council meetings and an online portal based on the White House’s “We The People” program, which allows US citizens to petition the President. The jury recommended raising the limit of councillors per council in Victoria to 15, so Geelong could meet the needs of its growing population. NewDemocracy founder Iain Walker had expected at least 65 jurors at the final meeting, despite it being voluntary. But some of the jurors were “struggling” with State Opposition MPs attacking the jury’s processes, he said. “People were a bit put-off and hurt. I think that is something to lay at the feet of elected politicians.” Darryn Lyons and Shadow Local Government Minister David Davis have criticised the jury since the State Government commissioned it mid last year. More recently, they labelled the voting process by which the jury recommended scrapping the mayoral vote a sham. The jury did not recommend the mayor and deputy running on the same ticket in its conditions for the mayoral vote. “The jury decided which issues they wanted to talk about,” Mr Walker said. “(The deputy mayor) wasn’t what the group wanted to discuss.“

Letters Out of housing, into sharing It was difficult not to feel sorry for the anonymous landlord whose property was trashed by scumbag tenants (Geelong Indy, 20 January). If only the Government could provide adequate social housing so he was not forced to be a landlord. Oh, wait - he isn’t! Some free advice: stick your dough in bluechips - you will always do better over time. You can even negatively gear. And best of all, no tenants! Kevin V Russell Geelong
No power to the people Jukka Tuisku (Letters, 20 January) failed to mention that going green has had a profound negative impact on jurisdictions heavily into renewable power, like South Australia. South Australian recently had its third major blackout when 60,000 homes were left without power for a considerable length of time. When I lived in South Australia for seven years during the 1980 it was dependent on fossil fuel power. We didn’t have one blackout. Adding insult to injury, South Australians pay more for electricity than residents of any other state. Its electricity is among the most expensive in the world. This is the brave new world for which Mr Tuisku yearns. I also note with concern that not only is Hazelwood power station set to close but its French owner, Engie, has also put You Yang B on the market, presumably because neither station is viable due to preferential treatment and subsidies for renewable energy. If both stations are replaced with renewable energy then not only Victoria better get used to power blackouts but South Australia and Tasmania as well because they draw power from Victoria when their renewables fail to meet peak demand. Renewable energy will take us backward to higher prices and disruption to base-load power supplies if the likes of Mr Tuisku get their way.

Jury members shirk duty I congratulate the work of the Citizens’ Jury, tasked with recommending a local government councillor model to best serve City of Greater Geelong residents. I was pleased to attend as an observer on the final day when I heard a reasoned discussion. I congratulate the facilitators responsible for achieving a reasonable consensus. I understand that in previous meetings the jury was split in reaching a consensus within the Andrews Government’s rigid terms of reference. However, Saturday’s branded Aspirational Day offered more scope to look at other models, such as Melbourne’s, which would provide greater experience and support to the mayor and councillors. My disappointment, like others, was that only 85 of the 100 jury members registered to attend the final day and only 31 were present, which

failed to provide a broad representation of views from across the region. Forbidden fruits For as long as I can remember my late husband and I enjoyed the treat of glazed fruit on Christmas Eve. The shiny pineapple rings with a cherry in the centre or peaches, pears et cetera were so delicious cut into pieces or given as gifts. But there has been no sign of them the past few years, which is so disappointing. I went to Safeway again for dried fruit to nibble in the evenings. Wherever possible we have always bought Australian-grown. But guess what? I could only buy prunes, which I am unable to eat. I bought Buderim ginger and Mildura Sunbeam sultanas. Everything else, such as apricots,
Former mayor Darryn Lyons hit the nail on the head with his business acumen in recently acknowledging that Avalon Airport is the goose that could deliver the golden egg. From a non-negotiable regional big-picture platform going forward, Mr Lyons is spot on. Given its potential regional jobs game-changer capacity and status as a subsidisation non-entity compared to Townsville and Cairns, Avalon requires all the attention and support that it can get. Agreed, the Andrews government has attained some plaudits via the provision of a short-term subsidy and can, for the moment, rightfully say, as Lara MP and Tourism Minister John Eren has stated on at least one occasion, that it has “saved Avalon”. Of course, intermittent humps have to be traversed and dots joined before fresh-food exports to Asia and commensurate inbound tourism markets can become a reality. Local federal MPs for one reason or another continue to offer zilch so far as advancing Avalon’s international accreditation and infrastructure requirements. However, a baby step that would resonate through state and federal corridors of power would be for Geelong’s council administrators to make a captain’s call and reverse a 2014 decision to cut in half Avalon’s proposed 22-hectare factory outlet precinct. Silver Glitter ganging up for show By Luke Voogt Iconic Geelong cover band Glitter Gang will celebrate its 25th birthday with a 10-man extravaganza next Saturday. Grovedale singer Grant Whiteside, who recently celebrated his 50th birthday, is the only member to play at every show. “(Original guitarist) Anthony Roberts has been with us since the beginning but has missed shows,” Whiteside said. “Anthony and I grew up together with all the seventies glam rock.” The band played its first official gig at the Barwon Club on Australia Day 1992. “But it sort of goes back to October 1990,” recalled Whiteside. At the time the then 25-year-old had been playing for two years with local band the Finkers, which had released an EP. Then the band belted out a few 70s hits on a whim. “Someone suggested ’how about you guys get dressed up and play a whole set of 70s rock?’” Whiteside said. “We just did that as a joke in October 1990 at the Eureka in front of a punk crowd. It was fantastic - the Eureka was a pretty pumping live venue in those days.” The city’s music venues dried up in the early 90s when “Victoria got hit with the pokies curse”, Whiteside said. The Finkers died out but Glitter Gang continued to score gigs. “As we got a name and a reputation, we started doing football club balls and functions,” he said. The current line-up is an eclectic mix of blokes not often found in a rock band. Roberts has a science doctorate while Whiteside worked in IT for 25 years. “We all work outside the band,” Whiteside
GLAMOROUS: Micky Blitz (Dahl Murphy), Stevie Knievel (Jon Gilchrist), Barry Glitter (Grant Whiteside), Bobby Dazzler (Dave West) and Marsha Brady (Anthony Roberts) said. “We’ve always tried to keep it something fun and resisted the urge to turn it into a job. “We’ve always strived to be as good as we can without taking ourselves too seriously.” The Glitter Gang made the finals of ABC’s national Exhumed competition at Sydney’s Rooty Hill RSL, for “never-were bands” regarded as “local legends”. “Anthony always said ‘we know we’ve made it if we played at the Rooty Hill RSL’,” Whiteside said.
But for the long-time singer nothing beats playing at home. “Personally, I just love playing at the Barwon Club - it’s like playing in your lounge room,” he said. “We do the odd road trip but the number one priority is having fun rather than following dollars or fame.” Whiteside Geelong was undergoing live-music “resurgence”. “People are committing and putting together
venues for live music.” “I think Geelong crowds have always loved live music even with the venues drying up. We’re playing to an older crowd that have grown up with a fantastic vibrant live music scene.” Glitter Gang’s past and present members will be decked out in their signature glam rock gear as they reunite at the Barwon club on 4 February. “We play some ridiculous number of songs now,” Whiteside said.

Manpower bowling maidens over By Luke Voogt Colac male dancer Beau Comelli can’t wait to get in front of a “rowdy” crowd as Manpower returns to Geelong next weekend. “It’s always a full house,” he said ahead of their performance at the Gateway Hotel on 4 February. “Last year, I was playing the SWAT officer and this year I’ll be doing the GI routine.” The former flight attendant has been with the Las Vegas-based Australian group for more than a year. Performing by its American name, Thunder Down Under toured Mexico, Canada, Hong Kong and Guam in 2016 and recently returned from a tour of the Netherlands. “It was fantastic,” Comelli said, “when I was with Emirates, I only got to go to Amsterdam once.” They performed in 10 different cities for hundreds of women travelling the “beautiful" Dutch countryside. “They’re very proper over there - the women are more of a ‘watching crowd’,” Comelli said. The 28-year-old came across the group in Las Vegas between jobs. “I decided to go over to Vegas for a bit of a vacation with my friend Steve Morris, while he was learning the ropes.” Morris, who had just joined Manpower, invited Comelli to a show. Later, the group’s promoter asked him to get on board. “I think Steve and Kurt might have hinted to him I had a bit of breakdancing background,” he said. Before he knew it, he is getting his gear off across the US. “There are some pretty dedicated fans,” he said. “We have some girls some tattooing the guys’ names on their bodies or throwing knickers on stage.”
What’sat on
THUNDER DOWN UNDER: Manpower's Beau Comelli will be in Geelong next weekend.
He and the group performed for his parents when he returned to Australia, which was less daunting than he expected. “They absolutely loved it,” he said. Soon after, at his first Geelong gig, about 20 of his family and friends showed up. “It was hilarious,” he said. “My cousin’s about the same age as me.” “I got ‘Fireman Edward’ to pull his girlfriend up on stage as a bit of a joke." Comelli wouldn’t trade his job for any other. “It’s great, we’re all close mates having a good time and getting to see beautiful parts of the world,” he said. “You get paid to stay in shape. I didn’t realise how much of a travel bug I still had until I left Emirates.” Former Gold Coast radio presenter Kurt Joseph will host the Manpower’s return to Geelong. “It was really energetic last year,” he said. “We feed off the crowd’s energy - if they’re a bit quiet it’s harder to get in the mood for dancing.” Thunder from Down Under has won the Best
MANPOWER: The world's top male revue act will strut their stuff in Geelong next weekend.
Male Revue in the Best of Las Vegas, making it the best in the world, Joseph said. The group features men from diverse back-

BRICK MAN: Lego maestro Ryan McNaught is in Geelong this weekend with his brick-built masterpieces.

Geelong Lego enthusiasts will have one final chance to see Ryan McNaught’s brick-built extravaganza this weekend. The Lego maestro has been in Geelong with his exhibition the Brickman Experience for the last couple of weeks. “This exhibition is very special to me,” he said. “It’s the original collection of my individual works, brought together in one space, for everyone to enjoy.” Ryan ‘Brickman’ McNaught is the only Lego Certified Professional in the Southern Hemisphere and one of 14 in the world. “Lego brings people together,” he said, “every-
one loves it - kids, parents, grandparents, everyone has a memory of playing with Lego.” The interactive exhibition, made entirely from Lego, is the largest touring show of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. He made his remarkable collection from more than 5 million bricks. It includes a Star Wars exhibit, an Airbus A380, a Ferrari and the world’s largest Lego flower. “We’ve had huge success with the exhibition across Australia and New Zealand so it was only a matter of time before we brought the exhibition to Geelong,” McNaught said. “I’ve also got a few exciting things for the kids
- and big kids - to participate in, so everyone can enjoy creating brick masterpieces, as well as enjoying the exhibition.” McNaught “used to be a slave to the corporate world” but in 2010 he took his love for Lego to a new level, trading the boardroom for a workshop. Traditionally his internationally-awarded works appear in the toy section of department stores but the Brickman Experience brings them all together in the one place. The Brickman Experience concludes this Sunday at the Geelong Arena.
Australian tenor Roy Best will bring legendary singer Mario Lanza back to life as Musical Mornings returns to Geelong next month. Lanza Sings Again will play twice at the Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) on 8 and 9 February, kicking off its season of Musical Mornings. The season will continue in March with Silvie Paladino returning to The Playhouse stage. In April, it’s Magical Moments will be the Music of Burt Bacharach with 22 songs from the composer’s massive swag of hits. NOT HAPPY JEAN: Bryan Eaton plays Reginald Paget, while Claudia Clarke plays his once-unfaithful ex-wife Jean Horton in Quartet
Quartet’s sordid past for our Rep Geelong Repertory Theatre’s first production for 2017, Quartet, will open in the city’s west next Friday for a three-week run. The play tells of four retired opera singers who band together to save their retirement home with song. The group collaborates to sing one their greatest successes from decades ago, the quartet from Act 3 Scene 1 of Guiseppe Verdi’s classic opera, Rigoletto. But their collaboration forces them to relive a sordid past of broken relationships. Can they overcome senility and decades of regret - and again find love - to save their home? Majella O’Connor will play the flighty Cissy
Robson and Bryan Eaton is the eccentric Reginald Paget. Tony Wright plays the role of Wilf Bond and Claudia Clake will appear on stage as Jean Horton. Established Geelong Repertory director and performer Geoff Gaskill will direct the play. The play is based on the movie of the same name, which starred Billy Connolly, Maggie Smith, Tom Courtney and Pauline Collins. The play runs from 3 February for three weeks, until 18 February at the Woodbin Theatre. Tickets are available from the Geelong Performing Arts Centre by phoning 5225 1200 or visiting gpac.org.au.

Ditch the role of spectator and become part of the show ... that’s the theme of Afrobeat’s innovative, world-class interactive entertainment, team building, educational workshops, and community classes. Industry leaders for 20 years, Afrobeat was founded in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney and quickly grew momentum offering their unique workshops and interactive shows Australia-wide. Now situated as Geelong’s premier African drumming and dance company, the Afrobeat experience is enjoyed by kids, schools, community, private and corporate events. “We’re in the business of inspiring, uplifting and energising audiences to the beat of the drum,“ says Afrobeat founder Janine Rew (aka Neeni Tuti, an African nickname). “Our unique interactive drumming show invites everyone to take up a drum and join in. It’s fun, engaging, educational, inclusive and entertaining, and allows for all abilities to experience success“. Beating the drum captures the imagination of its audiences. Within minutes, Afrobeat have groups beating out rhythms of unity, dancing, chanting and creating an outstanding theatrical performance while inspiring cultural awareness, diversity, team spirit, and connection. “Afrobeat’s not your average music program to visit a school. It offers so much more,“ says Aine Tyrrell, world music artist and teacher at Point Lonsdale Primary School “Afrobeat brings kids together in rhythm, makes it contagious enough for the teachers to want to play along, and invites the school commu-

Antoinette at Allegro Dance School works hard to provide a fun unique experience for dance in Geelong, having classes in three different locations to publicise and circulate her method of dance for over 11 years. The one-hour funky jazz, street funk and hiphop classes range from ages 3 to adults. Allegro Dance School now competes in Geelong eisteddfods. The school finishes the year with an amazing concert that allows all families to bring along their dinner and drinks and watch the show ’cabaret style’. For the concert, Antoinette provides the full service of hair and make-up completed by a supportive crew for her dancers, and has a professional dressmaker who personally measures every dancer and designs and creates modern style costumes. This allows the families to feel stress free and organised. The dancers perform to only the latest tunes. The wonderful event finishes with awarding each and every dancer with their own trophy.
Janine Rew with nieces Indiana and Charli. nity to come together in a way that’s truly special. “Having travelled in Africa, it’s clear to see that Janine weaves the very best of this cultural community drumming and offers it to Australian school kids in a way that makes sense, excites them and lets them experience African culture and music in their classrooms. “Janine has an amazing energy and this gets the students, parents, and teachers all involved dancing, clapping and drumming. It’s truly an unforgettable experience for students and staff alike and at the heart of it is a driving rhythm that brings the school community together in a magical way,“ Ms Tyrrell says. Voted ’Most Engaging Presentation’ by clients, Afrobeat is also highly regarded by industry peers including South Africa’s Drum Cafe: “Janine’s work and standard of delivery and presentation is exceptional. HEALTHY LIVING It wasn’t hearing loss, it was just earwax! Problems with hearing could mean problems at school, so best to get a specialist on the job early.

The holidays are over, and it’s ear time! OK, school is about to start, and hearing the teacher is a good thing. What’s the latest thing in ear health? There can be lots of reasons why children aren’t hearing well, including middle ear infections that can start with a cold. But sometimes, it is as simple as an ear blocked with wax. Earwax is supposed to come out naturally, but in many families that just doesn’t work. Swimming in summer can make the blockage worse, and before you know it, the child can’t hear the teacher. So how do you fix it? The safest thing is to ask a doctor or ear nurse to look inside the ear, to see what is going on. It is important to make sure the eardrum is intact, without any holes, before putting anything into
children’s ears. Ear nurse clinics are now one alternative for assessing the ear, as well as your GP. Once you know the eardrum is OK, the health practitioner will advise you on the best method to remove the wax. Ear drops from the chemist may help dissolve the wax, but in some cases, this doesn’t work, or the ear quickly blocks again. A dry method to remove earwax, called microsuction, is used by ear nurses in micro-suction ear clinics and also by specialist ear nose and throat (ENT) doctors. Children as well as adults can have micro-suction, but the first step is to get the ears checked out. Learn more: wwwcrystalclearclinic.com.au

While a tsunami of sports utility vehicles is well on its way to swamping passenger car markets around the world, some marques are offering a middle ground vehicle. Versions of the traditional station wagon with higher ground clearance and all-wheel-drive. Frankly these sensible high-riding wagons are not proving popular because buyers prefer the macho image of a 4WD, even if its does have 2WD and compromised ground clearance. The latest version of the A4 comes in Avant (station wagon) style, with the top of the heap being the new second-generation Audi allroad quattro offering the practicalities of a station wagon with off-road ability through the newest generation of the quattro all-wheel-drive system. This A4 wagon is available with the 185 kW 2.0 TFSI engine, the first time a petrol engine has been offered in any allroad quattro model in Australia. An alternative is the 140 kW 2.0 TDI diesel motor from the previous generation. The advantage of the new quattro is that it is lighter than the superseded system by four kilograms and brings significant fuel savings. Needless to say, the latest allroad is well specified, with Audi’s high-tech trademarks in all departments. On test was the allroad quattro 2.0 TFSI S tronic petrol variant, which comes to market at $74,400, plus on road costs. Added to the vehicle was the Technik pack consisting of the Audi virtual cockpit for $2200, load area rails with load securing kit ($350), plus metallic paint finish ($1420), nudging up the price to $79,223. The allroad quattro has its own distinctive styling, from a single-frame radiator grille and flared wheel arches filled with 18-inch alloy wheels to aluminium-look trim elements and roof rails. Despite being a big vehicle, at almost five metres long, exterior lines and proportions are pleasing to the eye, with no bulkiness evident from any angle. In keeping with its go-almost-anywhere character the allroad wagon also bests its Avant stablemate with 34 mm of additional ground clearance. It’s new A4 all round here with quality fit and finish, including leather on the seats, triple-zone
air-con and sunblinds on rear windows. Push button start is backed up by one of the better engine start / stop systems around with little hesitation for the motor to fire up on getting the driver’s go-ahead when stationary. As well as standard Audi Connect with Google Earth sat nav, the A4 allroad quattro is available with the integrated Audi tablet, which allows rear passengers to use the specially developed the Android-compatible device to watch movies or play games. It is also fully integrated into the car’s infotainment system, so it is possible to send navigation destinations to the driver for one-touch approval. The tablets have been developed so as not to injure passengers in the event of an accident, and also with anti-reflective low-glare properties, so they can be used in bright sunlight. A single Audi tablet costs $2000, with a pair priced at $3600. There’s 185 kW on tap from 5000 to 6000 rpm and 370 Nm from 1600 to 4500 rpm from the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. It’s mated with a seven-speed S tronic dualclutch transmission. The maker claims a zeroto-100 km/h time of only 6.1 seconds. When AWD traction is not needed, efficiencies are gained by using only the front axle for propulsion. The two clutches disengage to minimise drivetrain torque losses, which in turn, aids fuel efficiency. The first clutch is at the front of the propeller shaft, the second in the rear differential, which saves the drag of the differential drive gear turning in the oil bath. When torque controls detect wheel slip, up to 100 per cent torque can be sent to either axle. The allroad quattro has earned a five-star ANCAP safety rating thanks to an impressive array of standard safety features. Included are Audi pre-sense city with autonomous emergency braking and pedestrian detection (up to 85 km/h), exit warning, cross traffic assist, Audi side assist blind spot warning, Audi pre-sense basic (belt tensioning, window closing and other preventative measures if an emergency is detected), Audi pre-sense rear (warns following traffic if they are at risk of running into the rear of the car) and parking system plus with rear-view camera.

SPORT Cats devoured by Dandy LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Despite the best efforts of the players and support staff, the Geelong Cricket Club has unfortunately fallen to the bottom of the Premier cricket ladder following a demoralising loss to Dandenong last Saturday. While the Cats were unlikely to win considering they went into the second day's play well behind, the way that Dandenong ground them into the dirt once they got on top was a lesson in how ruthless you need to be at this level. A look at the ladder shows some fascinating figures, with Geelong actually sitting in second place in terms of runs scored, although the fact that they have had to bat a second time in a number of games may have contributed to this. However, it is the wickets taken column that is the most telling, with the bowlers managing just 73 wickets in 14 games, the lowest in the competition by far. A lack of penetration, experience and class with the ball makes it hard to attack games in the field. Having said all that, no one would question the work ethic and commitment of the club. Coach Andre Borovec is the perfect man to see them through this difficult period, as he has never been one to shy away from a challenge.
Tomorrow, the Cats have the chance to move up the ladder, as they take on Frankston Penninsula who sit just one place above them, meaning this could very well be the battle for the wooden spoon. In the Geelong Cricket Association, the makeup of this season's finals is completely unknown, with eight teams still in the hunt with just three rounds remaining. South Barwon kept their faint finals hopes alive with a stirring win over East Belmont, successfully defending just 159 in a 19-run win. They still find themselves in eighth spot though, and take on Newtown and Chilwell this round, who are fast sliding downwards after losing three of their last four games. For the winner, the momentum of a win here could carry them deep into March, while a loss could be disastrous. Geelong City sit in seventh, and had somewhat of a scare against the winless St Peter's, after managing just 146 in the first innings. St Peters complete lack of batting depth showed though as they were bundled out for just 87, before the Sharks had another bat in the hope of an outright win; the Saints managed to surive the day's play with four wickets in hand. Geelong City now take on St Joseph's in a game they simply must win. Add to that the fact that East Belmont, coming
off two disappointing losses in a row, take on a resurgent North Geelong, this round looks like the round that could really shake up the premiership hopes of almost every team. ST JOSEPH'S v Geelong City, Leopold v MURGHEBOLUC, Bell Post Hill v LARA, NORTH GEELONG v East Belmont, South Barwon v NEWTOWN AND CHILWELL, GROVEDALE v St Peter's In division two, Manifold Heights couldn’t have picked a worse time to drop a game against one of the lower teams on the ladder, with their loss to Alexander Thomson last round looking like it could seriously hinder their finals aspirations. Batting first, the Sharks looked well set at 1/56, but a monumental collapse saw them dismissed for just 138. Any hopes of a fightback were dashed as the Vikings never even gave them a chance to get back into, cruising to a six-wicket win. So now sitting in seventh spot, and out of the six by one point, Manifold Heights need to regroup against unbeaten Bell Park if they want to stay in touch. A task that is not beyond them, but on current form, looks unlikely. NEWCOMB AND DISTRICT v Thomson, Geelong West v HIGHTON, ST ALBANS BREAKWATER v Modewarre, TORQUAY v Alexander Thomson, Manifold Heights v BELL PARK, Guild Saints v MARSHALL
DOMINATION: Todd Rosewall held the lead for the entire final round of the Victorian Open Series’ opening event.
Locals poised for early Open lead on clean waves Jan Juc’s Todd Rosewall and Bella Wilson claimed top honours at the opening round of the Victorian Open Series Sunday. The day started with clean two to three foot waves at Gunnamatta which deteriorated as the event continued. A former Australian Junior Champion, Rosewall looked at home in the shifty left handers making the final with powerful carves and turns. “It was epic to get some fun little rip banks at Gunnamatta,” he said. “I’m pretty stoked to come away with the victory. It has been a while between event wins so I’m glad to be back.” In the final Rosewall took a commanding lead on his first two waves and which held until the 28 GEELONG INDY Friday, 27 January, 2017
end, with a heat total of 13.10 points. Mt Eliza’s Caiden Fowler scored 12.50 but could not find a big enough back up to his opening 7.00 point ride. Tim Stevenson (Jan Juc) placed in third on 11.80 with Adam Robertson (Portland) in fourth on 6.40. Rosewell now leads the race to the Open Champion Prize of a seven-day surf trip to the Maldives. “I have never been to the Maldives before so I am hunting that prize at the end,’ he said. “Hopefully I can take it home in the next few rounds.” A wave-starved final in the women’s division saw Bella Wilson jump into first place in the dying seconds with a 7.67 ride.
“I was pretty lucky in the final to get that wave in the last few seconds,” she said. “I am stoked to win though!” Wilson finished on a heat total of 12.17 points ahead of Daisy Corbett (Phillip Island) on 8.87. Lannia Fostin (Phillip Island) finished in third on 8.23 with Rikki Bell-Warren (Bells Beach) in fourth on 6.87. Wilson also leads the charge to the seven-day trip to the Maldives on the women’s side of the draw. “The Maldives trip will be awesome if I can win the state title,” she said. “I have never been on a boat trip before.” The Victorian Open Series heads to Phillip Island on 4 March.
Kingfish action to the forefront ON THE BITE Chris Pitman This past weekend produced some of the region’s best kingfish action ever. The Rip was unquestionably the busiest location in Sunday morning’s calm weather, with anglers boating numerous kings. Knife jigging worked well, along with fresh squid strips fished around 15m down. Kingfish were also taken by anglers driving and jigging over reefs off Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. Simon D’Antino and son Ryder ventured out of Barwon Heads on Monday, with the latter boating a well-conditioned kingfish of 70cm. Another proven tactic that worked last week was trolling hard-body lures in 15m off the back of Point Lonsdale. Plenty of flathead were taken out at the 40m, mostly on squid or pilchard baits. Fantastic numbers of squid were present just out from the mouth of Swan Bay. Anglers drifting with size 3 jigs had no trouble taking their bag-limits. Swan Bay’s channel produced pinkie snapper and whiting. Clifton Springs continued luring snapper with fish to 6kg along the Point Richards channel. The nearby Curlewis Bank fished well for whiting on a light running sinker rigs with pippie baits. Pike to almost 1m were a by-catch for anglers chasing pinkie snapper on the spoil grounds inside Corio Bay. Small three-inch soft plastics resembling pilchards were ideal for both species. The Barwon River estuary continued keeping land-based anglers busy with silver trevally and Australian salmon. The platforms along Sheepwash Road were worth fishing for anglers using small amounts of prawn as bait. Peri and Michael Stravropoulos and myself travelled to Portland In search of bluefin tuna. We found some while trolling Rapala X-Rap 20 lures off Lady Julia Percy Island, then moved to Julia Reef where Peri and I caught tuna to 30kg on lures cast to tuna feeding on the surface. Alex Surdich was also at it again off Portland, boating numerous tuna also to 30kg while trolling or casting lures. Freshwater anglers found solid redfin action in the Barwon River. Casting small, hardbody lures among structure worked well. Carp gave other anglers fishing around Breakwater a run for their money, with fish to 6kg banked. Lake Purrumbete gave up the odd trout for anglers trolling hard-body lures down deep. Brook trout again made an appearance, with anglers remarking on the trout’s significant growth rate. Lake Tooliorook was worth visiting for Ross Mcdonald, who caught a rainbow trout of 1kg. Ross also saw other anglers land fish. Next week’s weather looks ideal at this stage for targeting kingfish off Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads or tuna around Portland. Whiting should also remain a worthwhile option off St Leonards, while freshwater anglers could the Barwon around Queen’s Park or Wurdee Boluc Reservoir for some larger-model redfin.
BLUE DAY: Peri Stravropoulos off Portland with a tuna.
