Rangers ready to unite

Castle attacked By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Council is a step closer to compulsorily acquiring a 78-year-old man’s 34-acre home in Narre Warren North after its proposal was backed by a Planning Panels Victoria report. Panel chairman Con Tsotsoros stated that Casey’s proposed public acquisition of John Foy’s house, heavily vegetated lake, gardens and paddocks was “appropriate and justified” in light of the need for four soccer pitches and a pavilion at 191-195 Belgrave-Hallam Road. A disappointed Mr Foy, backed by several neighbours, said he would lobby for Planning Minister Richard Wynne to intervene. “I thought Con seemed pretty reasonable but when I read his report, I thought: ‘You a***hole’. “The report is just turned around all in the council’s favour. “They’re trying to make me look like an environmental vandal and the council is the environmental expert.” Mr Foy said the council’s plans would flatten trees and wreck the habitat-rich wetland and garden he created over the past 30 years. He would refuse to deal with Casey because of the “way they’ve dealt with me” - including being surprised by the council’s plans to take his entire property days before Mr Tsotsoros’s hearing. He had thought Casey only wanted to purchase a section of land along Eumemmerring Creek for the Lysterfield Lake-Frog Hollow Reserve missing link, he said. “They just want to come in and railroad me off the land with no questions asked.” In his report, Mr Tsotsoros commended the council for its “robust” leisure-fields strategies that showed a shortage of soccer fields at the appropriate standard in Casey.

“The net community benefit achieved from applying the public acquisition overlay would far outweigh any disbenefit to the subject site owner. “Council does not seek to acquire more land than reasonably required.” Mr Tsotsoros said he was “empathetic” to Mr Foy’s request for his pet dogs’ cemetery not to be disturbed but it could not be enabled in a public acquisition overlay. He said traffic, parking and amenity-related issues would be considered during any planning process for the proposed sports facility, which would extend the existing Narre Warren North Reserve. Casey councillors, on the back of the panel’s recommendation, are expected to vote on the public acquisition overlay on 7 February. Councillor Rosalie Crestani said she, as Mr Foy’s ward representative, would like to bring the parties together in a “compromise”. She said she would push to at least retain some of the site’s natural heritage as well as the dog cemetery. “This has been a hard one but we have to decide in light of what’s best for the community. “Residents don’t want their rates to keep being put up but they want sports facilities to be provided, so we have to introduce them in the most cost-effective way possible. “I don’t think council wants to be seen looking as a big bad bully riding roughshod over anybody.” Councillor Rex Flannery declined to comment on how he’d vote but said he’d “hate to see anybody lose his property”. “He should have the right to live there as long as he likes.” Casey Council has declared it would compensate Mr Foy in line with the state’s Land Acquisition Act.

It was a breakfast of champions A free breaky kicked off Australia Day celebrations in Hampton Park. The Hampton Park Networking Group event at Arthur Wren Hall on Thursday 26 January also included an animal farm, face painting, jumping castles, market stalls and more. Holt MP Anthony Byrne handed out Australia Day awards to 28 individuals and seven organisations at the Day of the Nations celebration. “Australia Day is a wonderful day when we can recognise those people who contribute to the community and make our community a better place,” he said. Leonard O’Brien was among the winners. He joined Narre Warren Bowls Club on 9 September 1999 after deteriorating eyesight forced him into retirement. Len soon became one of the club’s most active volunteers. Mr Byrne said that Len always set up the greens on bowls days, putting out the mats, jacks, rakes, scoreboards, flags, umpires’ kit and other equipment that everyone else tended to forget about for the day’s play. Len then fills the urn, sets up tables and chairs, and makes sure the toilets are clean. Mr Byrne said Len considered it one of his many duties to walk from home to the club - a considerable distance - to make sure the rubbish bins were put out for council collection. Len joined Blind Bowls Victoria in 2000 and in his first year represented the state in the Aus-

tralian Blind Bowls Championships. He’s followed suit every year since. The Cranbourne Library was another award winner. With Casey Cardinia Library Corporation it last year launched a Forgiving Tree initiative that delivered much-needed resources for local charities in the lead up to Christmas. The library directed book fines and other fees to the tree, raising more than $15,000 for the Cranbourne Information and Support Service (CISS). The initiative prompted people to return almost $18,000 worth of lost items. Cranbourne Library staff Wendy Morrison and Sue Sleet and Casey Cardinia Library Corporation CEO Chris Buckingham were instrumental in making the Forgiving Tree a success. Another award recipient, Narre Warren 16-year-old Destanee Aiava, captured imaginations across the country playing in this year’s Australian Open. As a junior, she was involved in the Serious Tennis program run by Justin Yeo in Doveton. In 2012 at age 12, Destanee became an international star by winning the Longines Future Tennis Aces Tournament at Roland Garros in Paris, France. Her prize was an opportunity to hit with 22time Grand Slam winner Steffi Graf. This year she broke onto the world stage and broke a record, becoming the first player born in

Up to 100 disadvantaged young people will be targeted as part of a $550,000 Empower Youth program to counter youth crime in Greater Dandenong and Casey. YSAS (Youth Support Advocacy Service) won the State Government grant to employ further youth workers in the region. The workers will support at-risk and vulnerable young people with their health and wellbeing, community involvement, career pathways and education and training. Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley said young people in need of help and guidance “deserve to have every chance to succeed and excel”. “And through this program, we will ensure they do just that.” Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said the program would improve social, community and economic opportunities for young people. Casey and Greater Dandenong were identified as a priority area for the $4 million statewide program due to high levels of socio-economic disadvantage and crime. The program was the first state grant specifically for funding youth workers in the past six years, according to the State Government.

Casey City Council’s non-resident of the year award was presented to David Nugent, who runs a men’s health and wellbeing program out of Hallam Senior College. Mr Nugent who lives in Bunyip was awarded the Australia Day honour at a special presentation in the Casey Council chambers on the evening of Thursday 26 January. Mr Nugent is the founder of Heavy METAL (Men’s Education Towards Anger and Life), which offers behaviour change programs and counselling support to men, women and children affected by family violence. While he was proud enough to be nominated for the award, Mr Nugent was even more surprised to find out he had actually won it. “I felt like it was a very special honour and I felt quite proud being selected and being part of it,” he said. “I was proud of being accepted just as a nominee and I think the biggest reward for me is sitting back and reflecting on the work I have done in the last 15 years and the privilege I have had to work with men, women, and teens looking for help to live life without family violence.” He also said having formal recognition for the work he has been doing was a nice surprise and he couldn’t be happier. “I’ve been running Heavy METAL for 15 years and have been quietly working away with my team and helping men and women around FV issues,” he said. “I’ve been working in schools with teens for 10 years so the recognition of that work makes me feel quite privileged.” Despite not living within the city of Casey, he

Police probing Hallam drive-by

ENTERTAINMENT FRIDAY 03rd February

Bikie taskforce detectives are appealing for public help to solve a Hallam drive-by shooting. Echo Taskforce police believe the incident on Saturday 24 January last year has outlaw motorcycle gang (OMCG) links. They’ve been told that those responsible attended a Belgrave-Hallam Road home about 4am and fired a number of shots into a bedroom window. A 27-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman were sleeping inside, but were not injured.

Gun used in barbecue carjacking

Memberships are now available

By Victoria Stone-Meadows An Endeavour Hills man was held at gunpoint while thieves ransacked his car on Amalfi Drive, just after 6pm on Sunday 22 January. Police said the 25-year-old had left a barbecue at his home and was on his way to the nearby service station when he was confronted by a white sedan travelling on the wrong side of the road towards him. The victim stopped his car and put his keys in his pocket when two men, one of Caucasian and one of Islander appearance, got out of the white car and approached the victim’s car. The victim got out of his car and it was then 12337757-HM05-17

the man of Islander appearance produced a black handgun and aimed it at the victim demanding he hand over his car keys. The victim refused to comply and scuffle broke out between the two men and ended with the Caucasian man kicking the victim numerous times. The two men managed to steal various items from the victim’s car before returning to their white car and fleeing the scene. The car was described as a white sedan, possibly a Toyota or a Honda, and police ask anyone who may have seen the incident or a similar car in the area at the time to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

An Endeavour Hills student is starting high school with a creative edge. Mohamed Haggag won a creative pen and touch tablet valued at $270 through a Greater Dandenong Libraries character design competition. The competition helped the 12-year-old to realise his talent for drawing and he hopes the tablet will help him to develop his budding creative skills.

Chisholm Institute provided the tablet for the council’s art series, which fosters the talents of local young people. Chisholm’s bachelor of graphic and games design degree course leader Nicholas Lee said Mohamed had a good sense of colour and character and showed promise as a designer. “The tablet is a great tool to help Mohamed develop his skills digitally,” he said.

A long jail term is nothing petty By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man accused of threats to kill, robbery and trying to stab a stranger with a broken beer bottle while on bail has protested to a magistrate that he was facing only “petty charges”. Ardem Aldobasic, 22, of Springvale, had been told by judge Pauline Spencer in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 23 January that he was facing a lengthy jail term after pleading guilty to a recent two-month crime spree. “These are petty charges. You seen my priors?” the previously jailed Aldobasic said. Ms Spencer told Aldobasic that the charges were not a joke. “That’s part of your issue. You’re not understanding how serious this is.” Among the offences was crashing a stolen car at high-speed soon after swiping a slab of Bundy from a Fountain Gate bottle shop drive through about 1.20pm on 27 October. Aldobasic stole the car from a Springvale home the day before and drove it in a petrol drive-off in Hampton Park and the bottle-shop heist. After taking the Bundy slab, Aldobasic drove through the Fountain Gate precinct at a “fast rate of speed” and tyres screeching without slowing down for two speed humps, the court was told. Seconds later, the car crashed into a light pole on Cranbourne-Narre Warren Road. Aldobasic was treated in hospital for a cut to his face from the crash. He recorded a 0.037 blood-alcohol reading as well as levels of cannabis in his blood. At the time, Aldobasic was a disqualified driver and was failing to comply with his communitywork corrections order. He was bailed and then a month later, threatened to stab and kill a stranger in Douglas Street,

Allied Dental Care

Noble Park. He pulled out a beer bottle, smashed it on the pavement and tried to stab the victim in the stomach with the broken top-half of the bottle. On 13 November, he threatened to kill a female relative as he broke into her house to search for his alcohol “stash”. As he left the aggravated burglary, he picked up her small dog and threw it over her neighbour’s fence. Police also seized an imitation sawn-off .22 rifle in Aldobasic’s boarding-house bedroom, and charged him over the attack and robbery of a man on a Springvale street in December. During the attack, Aldobasic demanded the man’s cigarette, pushed him backwards over a metre-high fence and tried to strike him to the face. Aldobasic told the court it was a “joke” he was charged with robbery for stealing tissues from the man’s jeans pocket. Defence lawyer Arend Slink told the court his client had alcohol and cannabis issues, but didn’t concede a mental health link to his offending. Aldobasic was “simply not able to come up with any explanation for his behaviour”, Mr Slink said. The court was told Aldobasic had been admitted for cannabis and ice-induced psychoses twice since 2015. Prior to sentencing, Ms Spencer ordered a Forensicare psychiatric assessment of Aldobasic to understand his offending, noting he was alcoholaffected for several offences. She said his jail term would top the 42 days in pre-sentence detention, and would likely be followed by a community corrections order.

In defence of Bail Justices

EXPERIENCE DIFFERENT

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey councillor Wayne Smith has defended the under-fire Bail Justice system in the wake of a man being charged with murdering five people in Bourke Street, Melbourne while on bail. Cr Smith, a Bail Justice who has presided over 995 cases in the past 11 years, called for peak body Royal Victorian Association of Honarary Justices to break its silence and back the volunteer Bail Justices. “There’s been concern that bail justices aren’t getting support in this instance.” Bail Justices - though not as steeped in the law as magistrates - were highly trained in applying the state’s Bail Act, Cr Smith said. He said that as part of his training, he attended Melbourne Magistrates’ Court for a week, sat an exam and practical assessments. As the Bail Act has changed, BJs received updated training including online tests to ensure they could apply the act. “I’d like to think all of my decisions are fairly well considered. “I’m far from a hanging judge but I’d think I’ve only bailed people 20-30 times.” A BJ is typically called into police stations after-hours to decide on serious offenders. For less serious charges, police can often release a person on bail or summons. “When you’re called up, the chances of them being released is usually pretty slim. “It’s not a personal decision and I’m not being nasty. I’m just applying the Bail Act. “I can say I’ve never left the police station and had any doubt I’ve made the right decision.” After recent public outcry, the State Government moved to replace BJs with magistrates sitting in a night court - a proposal that would require extreme resources, Cr Smith said. Cr Smith is one of up to seven BJs in the Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong region. He

Your pathway to a brighter future. NO MINIMUM ATAR Wayne Smith has come out to bat for the embattled Bail Justice system. alone can hear up to six cases on a weekend. He hoped the system wouldn’t be scrapped, describing it as a “good tradition” to have an “ordinary person in the community” involved. Cr Smith said BJs based their decision on the applicant’s criminal history, risk to public safety and whether they had suitable accommodation. The prime issues were whether the applicant was likely to re-offend and likely to abscond from court. He felt sympathy for the unnamed Bail Justice who had released Dimitrious Gargasoulas less than a week before he allegedly drove his car into pedestrians on 20 January. “There are people on social media saying name them and shame them. “(The BJ) was just doing their job. “We are volunteers but we are very highly trained - that’s what hurt me the most.”

DECADES OF EXPERIENCE Ian McCoy, licensed estate agent, had run his own real estate businesses before joining KR Peters, bringing 40 years of experience to the team. Ian has knowledge in all facets of the industry and has dealt with many investors, retirees, developers, first home buyers and baby boomers achieving their real estate dreams. The enthusiasm Ian has for the industry, assisting vendors achieve premium prices for their property is what real estate is all about. “I am looking forward to the future with KR Peters as the Officer-Pakenham area grows rapidly and more people are seeking 2 DANDENONG JOURNAL Monday, 30 January, 2017

to settle in the district.” The managing director of KR Peters Wantirna South, Peter Nicolls has had a long association in the Officer-Pakenham area selling land estates such as Arden, Blue Horizons and just recently Savannah. As Officer didn’t have a local office in the town, Peter decided it was time to broaden the service by opening an office to provide professional service in marketing established homes and townhouses and offering professional property management services. In doing so, Ian McCoy was invited to join the family-run business and assist in

growing the brand in the Officer Pakenham areas. The office will be well staffed to cater for the high demand from buyers flocking to the area so all we need is local support and we will continue to offer the unique service which has been provided to many suburbs over the last 35 years. Ian and Peter invite one and all to call in to the office and say hello, and are offering fantastic introductory deals for those thinking of selling or having their investment property professionally managed. NEW HOMES & LAND

OPEN SPACES AND FREEWAY ACCESS A DRAWCARD FOR YOUNG COUPLE Buying an established home was only briefly an option for Kristy Lewis and Jay Stacey. The couple were renting in Chadstone and ready to buy their own house, but it quickly became apparent that building represented better value. “We had a look at established houses but we didn’t want go through an auction, where you don’t know if you’re going to get it, and also you don’t know what you’re getting, so we decided to build, where it’s pretty much a fixed price,” Kirsty said. “It’s just more affordable to build. When you buy established you get something smaller for your money and you have the cost of maintenance.” The pair built a four-bedroom, two-living area home in Berwick Waters, a development by Frasers Property Australia and Mondous Property Australia. They were the first family to move into their street two-and-a-half years ago, but are now surrounded by neighbours, parks and wetlands. “There’s lots of space and it’s a lovely neighbourhood because everybody here is like-minded,” Kristy said. “The wetlands were a huge drawcard for us, as well as it being more secluded and private than other estates. Some of the estates we looked at were on a main road.” Since moving into Berwick Waters the couple have had their first child, Jack, who turned one in July. The family are regular visitors to Berwick Waters’ expansive wetlands with its walking paths and bridges, and are particular fans of the area’s playgrounds. “We have a very good park within walking distance with lots of open space,” Kristy said. “There are built-in trampolines for the little

KRISTY LEWIS AND JAY STACEY OF BERWICK. kids, a flying fox, sandpit and the usual swings and slides.” Kristy works as Registered Nurse in Doveton, less than 20-minutes drive from Berwick Waters, while Jay commutes to

Moorabbin for work. The pair are among many residents who live and work in the area, as opposed to commuting to the Melbourne CBD. The last census (2011) revealed almost

60 per cent of people who worked within the City of Casey also lived there. The Berwick Waters sales office is at 5 Riverstone Boulevard, Clyde North, with display homes on Flowerbloom Crescent.

Rangers united to take on youth homelessness By Nicholas Creely In Australia, youth homelessness is at an all-time high with a vast population of youth aged between 12 and 25 battling to find a place to sleep. And on 4 February the Dandenong Rangers will look to tackle the issue head-on in a match dedicated to the Unite Project, an organisation committed to getting youth off the streets. The Unite Project, partnered with Nu Pure Beverages, a 100 per cent Australian owned company, provides Australians with spring water sourced from specially selected pristine Australian springs. Currently The Unite Project has 576 stockists Australia wide with more than 280,000 bottles of water sold and $158,000 raised to assist youth. Unite Project ambassador Dandenong Ranger Sara Blicavs said that the epidemic Australia currently faces needs more awareness and that she is

doing all she can to help out. “I came on to the project through my brother (Mark) as it started really through the Geelong Football Club - it’s a branch of Cotton On - and it, basically, is those fluro coloured water bottles that you would see around cafes, and it tackles youth homelessness,” she said. “There are 26,000 young Aussie people between the ages of 12-25 in a homeless shelter or couch surfing and what they do (Unite Project) is they will give to organisations and charities that will help clean up the youth and get them off the street. “I remember last year the Rangers girls did the Big Umbrella, seeing the homeless on Flinders Street, and that was such an amazing experience, and so eye-opening, and I think ever since then this whole project has been perfect for me. “I want to clean up and, especially with a lot of things happening with the homeless now, I really

want to help.” Other high-profile ambassadors include Sara’s brother Mark, an AFL player with Geelong, other Cats players Lincoln McCarthy and Jed Bews, as well as AFL legend Brad Johnson. The match will be played at Dandenong Stadium against the Townsville Fire, with tip-off at 6.30pm, and Blicavs urges Rangers fans to come out and join in the night and the festivities. “It’s all about awareness that night, the whole game is, basically, dedicated to the Unite Project - $3.50 for each ticket entry will go to the Unite Project and you will also be given a bottle of water - it’s about awareness and trying to get cafes or businesses to buy a fridge and store our water,” she said. “I’m looking for a big crowd to come and join and make it a big night so it should be great.” For more information, visit www.theuniteproject.org.

Stunning performance powers Bucks into finals By Nicholas Creely DDCA T20 Semi Final Review Buckley Ridges and Cranbourne have both powered their way to a DDCA Twenty20 final by putting up dominant performances in the semi-finals on 25 January. Down at Park Oval, the Bucks faced off with a star-studded Berwick line-up, electing to bat on one of the smallest grounds in the competition. But what happened next needed to be seen to be believed - Daniel Watson (119 not out) crunched a wonderful century, flaying the Bears bowlers all over the park. The whirlwind knock included a whopping eight maximums and a dozen boundaries, all in the space of just 66 balls, lifting the Bucks to an ominous 7/175. It’s not the first time Watson has stolen the show in this tournament with the blade either - in the 2008/09 final against Springvale South he made a record 193 not out, a knock which included 14 sixes. Star Bears captain Jarrod Goodes (4/36) could hold his head high once again while James Wilcock (2/27) performed well. In reply, the Bears were in serious strife early,

losing Nathan Pilon and marquee Michael Wallace early before Jarrod Armitage (35) and Ryan Crawford (47) battled it out to finish all-out on 147. Hussain Ali was extraordinary with the ball in the middle-period of the run-chase, taking 5/16 off his four overs, including the key scalps of Wallace, Josh Holden and Goodes. Lukas Hoogenboom (3/30) was also pivotal but went at over 10 an over. Meanwhile at Casey Fields, The Eagles destroyed Parkfield in a completely one-sided affair. It seemed like the Eagles were hell-bent on revenge after the Parkers upset them just a week prior in Turf 1 and were at their dominant best right from the outset. Winning the toss and electing to bat, the Parkers were bundled out for just 72 off 18.5 overs with the Eagles taking advantage throughout the middle-stages of the innings. Jakeb McVicar (3/10) and Cameron Dinger (3/10) worked in tandem excellently while Matt Chasemore (2/29), Cameron Kelly (1/13) and Steven Spoljaric (1/7) were all on song with their seam bowling. And Spoljaric (41) wasted little time knocking over the meagre total as the Eagles reached the target in just 11.5 overs and one wicket down. Lucas Ligt (30 not out) continued his rich vein

An injury-depleted Melbourne Boomers have fallen, but not without a fight, as the Dandenong Rangers continued their dominant season over their cross-town rivals on Wednesday 25 January at the State Basketball Centre. After coming out on top on the previous three occasions against the Boomers, the Rangers completed a clean-sweep and further enhanced their chances of finishing in the top-two at the end of the home-andaway season. In fact, the Rangers are almost a certainty to play finals now. The finishing score-line 78-66 was a true indicator of the Rangers dominance and after a slow-going start to the 2017 year have found their niche once again, punishing the Boomers for multiple errors around the court. In recent weeks coach Larissa Anderson has spoken about the need to cut out the silly errors and the Rangers showed the way against their opposition. In one of the best individual games of the season, Sara Blicavs (25 points) was spectacular and combined with Steph Cumming (16) to dominate all-corners. Blicavs, who has been named in the WNBL Team of the Week twice already, looks certain for another reward this week as she continues to build on her already impressive career. But the star was just happy to get away with the win against their biggest rivals and said the team is looking to build upon its strong from leading into the finals. “I’m just so happy that we have played Melbourne four times and played well and we now can move on to play other teams,” she chuckled. “We’re just aiming on getting into finals and trying to hold on to top-spot now - we can then build on our game and work on things right in time for finals.” Other Rangers to play impressive games were the consistent Aimie Clydesdale, star import Ally Mallott and the stable veteran Jacinta Kennedy. It was a game riddled with errors, mostly by the Boomers, as the Rangers led virtually from the outset despite a plucky start from the Boomers, and continued on their dominance as the opposition began to get sloppy. In a great sign for the WNBL in what was the Australia Day Eve game, a healthy crowd of 2638 supporters attended, a record for the State Basketball Centre.

Bears back but Bloods down for the count By Nicholas Creely DDCA TURF 1 Review - Round 8 (Day 2) Mordialloc v Berwick The Bears remain well and truly in the race for the Turf 1 flag, knocking off Mordialloc at Ben Kavanagh Reserve. Chasing 102 from last week, the Bears were in trouble with four early wickets, before Jarrod Armitage (43) and Adam Watson (40) steered the ship and managed to help them pass the total. The Bears were eventually bowled out for 181, with Stuart Squires (4/40) toiling hard as he always does. With the prospect of outright highly unlikely, but not impossible, the Bloodhounds went in to face the music once again for 30 overs. And the mindset of the batsman was clear from the outset, with the Bloodhounds opting to stone-wall the innings and prevent any further damage. Eventually the game ended with the Bloodhounds on 1/38 off 30.1 overs, with some extraordinary figures seen. None more than Bloodhounds opener Tim Richardson, who made 11 not out off a whopping 112 balls. Springvale South v Buckley Ridges This one could really hurt the Bloods. With the top-four race so tight, any wins or losses can be disastrous, and despite it being just a blip on the radar, Springvale South would be disappointed to have not chased down a manageable total against the Bucks. After the Bucks gave the Bloods 192 for victory, it seemed the home side would have no trouble reaching the total with plenty of overs to spare, reaching 3/115 at one point. But a stunning middle-order collapse, mostly at the hands of Luke Fletcher (4/28), who was the star throughout, saw the Bloods all-out for 176. Omar Baker top-scored for the Bloods with a well-made 52. Dandenong West v Parkfield Two of the bottom-three sides desperate for a win and bragging rights - that’s what cricket is about. And the clash between the Bulls and Parkers was a fantastic contest, with the men from the West claiming the chocolates. Chasing 124, the Westers pushed it until the very end, despite a stellar spell from Matthew Aslett (5/35), and eventually got there before being bowled out for 126. Exciting youngster Ethan French (27) topscored in the thriller. Cranbourne v Heinz-Southern Districts Apart from the first thirty-minutes of day-one, Cranbourne was completely dominant, outplaying the Cobras in a critical top-four clash at Casey Fields. After the Eagles posted 220 last week, the Cobras always had a huge task ahead of them. And the Eagles are the premiers for a reason, and the trio of Steven Spoljaric, Cameron Kelly

The Hawks ground out an important win against the Magpies. 164233 and Matt Chasemore ensured the Cobras were rattled. The Cobras were trundled out for 114 off just 65.1 overs, with Spoljaric taking two, Chasemore picking up a couple, Kelly taking two and Tim Fathers grabbing a few himself. Narre Warren v Hallam-Kalora Park The Hawks have flexed their very strong muscles, dominating proceedings against an improved Narre Warren outfit at Sweeney Reserve. Chasing 214, the Hawks got their three wickets down in the 79th over, and despite the Magpies showing plenty of spirit, class over-shone. Ben Hillard (72), Corey Booth (53 not out) and Leigh Booth (42) combined brilliantly, using class instead of power to graft away at the total.

Janaka Liyanabadalge (1/57 off 27 overs) was a constant force, and continues his stellar season. North Dandenong v Dingley Dingley’s charge towards a shock finals appearance remains alive for yet another week after knocking off a plucky Maroons outfit. Already well ahead in the game in the pursuit of 161, the Dingoes quickly knocked off the runs in no time, and declared on 6/163. Jurgen Andersen (4/59) continues to be a beacon for the Maroons, bowling virtually all of the first session. The Maroons then batted out the entire day, finishing on 6/107, and virtually closing the curtain on playing finals this season.

Surging victory for Big Flood Big Flood sent an ominous warning to his fellow top line competitors with a dominant win in Thursday night’s Australian Sprint at Sandown Park. Sent to the boxes as the $1.80 favourite, Big Flood began fairly as his obvious challenger Dundee Osprey completely blew the start. Early splits of 5.03 and 18.58 had Big Flood leading clearly, a strong run home secured victory in a flying 29.18. Prior to the race Big Flood looked hard to beat from box one however trainer Jason Thompson had concerns. “I was a bit worried about the draw. He’s had the red once before at Sale and blew the start, even though he began well here last week I still had that in the back of mind. “He didn’t begin brilliantly but came out with them and was able to push through at the turn. “We couldn’t have asked for much more from him,” said Thompson. The win was Big Flood’s eighth from nine career starts and boosted his prize money tally to $42,104. “I really think the track at Sandown suits him. “With Derby and Futurity heats at Wentworth Park, Perth Cup heats and Warragul Cup on it probably took a little bit out of the race. “It was a race at the right time for him, a good test this early on in his career.” Big Flood is owned by the Unique Lolly Syndicate headed by his breeder Des Douch. “Apprentice jockey Brandon Stockdale is in the syndicate, his dad Frank and a mate of mine Des Douch. “Big Flood comes from the first litter they’ve ever bred - they bred him, reared him and have obviously done a really good job.” Earlier in the night Lithgow Panther took out the Maidment Memorial. After settling last early on he navigated his way to third down the back straight before he took the lead turning for home. He held off the fast finishing Zipping Zeus in the closing stages to win by 3/4 of a length in 34.30. Britton kennel representative and handler on the night Jason Ireland was in awe of Lithgow Panther, or Toby as he’s known to connections. “He’s a true 600m dog and he proved that tonight against a really good field - he picked them up with ease. “It’s been a while since I’ve had the privilege to handle in a feature race like this so it’s a great thrill,” said Ireland. The action wasn’t confined to the track, with Australian rock legend Angry Anderson performing for the big crowd.

Pattinson century puts the Panthers in the box seat By Nicholas Creely VIC PREMIER CRICKET Review - Round 15 (Day 1) Throughout the soul-searching and testing times in James Pattinson’s career, it seems that the prodigious talent has gone away and added another string to his bow. It’s been a long time coming for one of the quickest bowlers in the country, if not the planet, but throughout a gruelling two years, he has come back a better rounded and more impactful cricketer. Although Patto has always handled the blade with confidence, as the public has seen throughout his test appearances with Australia, this season the Aussie quick is becoming a bona-fide allrounder. And at Shepley Oval on Saturday, against a strong Melbourne bowling outfit, Pattinson played one of the knocks of the season, scoring his second century of the year, this time making 131 off 200 balls. 26 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 30 January, 2017

His 137 in the Twenty20 against Ringwood was something extraodinary, but this innings was different in so many ways. It wasn’t just the manner in which he seamlessly caressed the ball to all parts, but it was his ability to steady the ship and weather the storm. The Dandenong Cricket Club were able to capture the moment he made his century on social media, in what was truly a fine performance. He came in at 3/41, with stars Brett Forsyth (16) and skipper Tom Donnell (0) back in the sheds, and set about resurrecting the innings. Teaming up with the consistent Lincoln Edwards (78), the pair showed why the Panthers are truly the team to beat, notching up a 144-run partnership, and the home side never looked back, racking up 8/361 by stumps. Other strong contributors were Cameron Forsyth (70), who continued his impressive form, and Jacques Augustin (20), who chimed in late with some nice stroke-play. But the real story of the day was Pattinson, who has now made 502 runs at 62.8 this season,

with two centuries and two fifties to his name. Look out Melbourne, because he is still yet to bowl in this match! Meanwhile, Casey-South Melbourne have pulled a rabbit out of the bag, claiming first-innings points in another stunning result against Greenvale. With the home side electing to send the Swans in, wickets fell swiftly, with the Swans falling all the way to 8/81. But Leigh Diston (28) wagged late in the innings, sending the Swans up to a competitive but under-par 121. And despite a stunning start to the secondinnings, in which the Kangaroos fell to 6/49, a plucky partnership from Nathan Massey (44) and Kyle Adams (31) got them to 7/112. But Brendan Rose (5/40), the hero last week, stood up again, storming through the tail, bowling out the Roos for 120.

Behind the scenes heroes deserve their accolades By Nicholas Creely Within the Greater Dandenong community, there are countless people who work hard and contribute behind-the-scenes, and often don’t get the recognition they deserve. In sport, administrators are the building block for a successful sporting club or competition. And on Australia Day, Ross Hepburn was inducted into the Greater Dandenong Sports Hall of Fame, after a glittering career as President of both the Dandenong Cricket Club and the Dandenong District Cricket Association. Throughout his long stint within the sporting ranks of Greater Dandenong, Hepburn had a major influence on sport in the south-east area, and has been a mentor to Michael Findlay, the current Dandenong President and recipient of the award last year. In fact, he is only the second recipient of the award since it was introduced by the council. At the award ceremony at Dandenong Park, an emotional Hepburn was proud of his achieve-

sport at the junior levels more than almost any other. The sport’s in great shape and the city’s in great shape.“ Sophie Molineux was the other recipient of an award, taking out the Sports Person of the Year. The 19-year-old athlete is regarded as one of the most promising women’s cricketers in Victoria, and excelled throughout 2016 wherever she played. Sophie currently plays her club cricket for Dandenong, while also juggling her commitments with both the Melbourne Renegades in the WBBL and with Vic Spirit, Victoria’s team. Since debuting for Dandenong in the 2013/14 season as a 15-year-old, Molineux has excelled at the Lions, and made a spectacular 112 against Box Hill at the beginning of the 2015/16 season. Sophie’s grandmother Val accepted the award on her behalf because she was away playing cricket. It is expected that she will be a house-hold name for many years to come.

The Williams sisters may have stolen the spotlight at the Australian Open but it’s a husband and wife team from Dandenong that are the family to focus on in the world of lawn bowls. When Prem and Seetha Hettiarachchi moved to Australia 20 years ago they had never seen a lawn bowls green -but have taken to the sport with gusto. Their love for bowls reached a grand crescendo late last year when both were crowned singles champions of the Dandenong RSL Rec Bowls Club. They have both won championships before -Seetha was the back-to-back champion at Burden Park before the Hettiarachchi’s made the move to Dandenong - but never before have they held singles championships at the same time. Until now, with Prem scoring a 25-17 win in the men’s final and Seetha winning a 25-23 thriller in the women’s. “I’m very happy, it’s out first time together and to be singles champions at the same time is a very special feeling, it’s like a dream come true,” Prem told the Journal. Prem and Seetha wasted no time in getting involved in the Australian way of life when they made the move from Sri Lanka in the 90s. “When we came to Australia we fell in love with the people and thought we need to do something sporty to join in the culture,” Prem said. “A friend took me to the rink and laid down a mat, he asked me to bowl and was impressed so I became a member and Seetha followed. We’ve loved every minute of bowls and the people involved ever since.” Prem, who has played plenty of snooker and cricket in his life, said the challenge of lawn bowls was never ending. “It’s a tough game and there is a lot of practice that goes into getting your bowl close to the kitty,“ he said. “It’s a lot of practice, but you can’t buy for a
