Inspiring women By Jolene Ogle Noosa’s first ever major International Women’s Day event has just been announced, and the one-day summit is set to be inspiring, thought-provoking and all about community change. Event organiser Jeanette Dal Santo is behind the Ripple Effect Women’s Summit that will be held at The Big House in Pomona on Wednesday 8 March. Ms Dal Santo said she wanted to bring women together to learn from each other and talk openly about what women really want and need within and from the local community. The event will be broken into two segments with a morning session and an afternoon session. The morning session is called Dream It, You Can Achieve It and will feature inspiring guest speakers such as Animal Planet’s Snake Boss, Julia Baker. The Brisbane-based mother-of-two said she can’t wait to present at the Ripple Effect Women’s Summit and said she had a passion for inspiring women. “I love being in a room full of women,” she said. “There is always such a great energy, you never feel judged and there is just something powerful and wonderful about gathering women together.” Julia is now into the second season of Snake Boss, a reality TV show about catching snakes in urban homes, and said many modern women can be too scared to chase their dreams.

“Don’t be scared. Have a go, and if it doesn’t work out, have a good laugh. It doesn’t mean you failed, it just means that wasn’t your thing and you can keep it as a good story for later,” she said. “I used to have a drama teacher who said if you’re going to suck at something, suck with passion. For 40 years I dreamt of being on TV and here I am. I chased that dream and I had a go.” Julia will be joined by community leaders Wendy Wilson of Life Beyond 30 and inspirational masters student, human rights activist and Global Champion for Change, Melanie Bublyk. The afternoon session is called Creating a Thriving and Vibrant Community, and is all about women telling women what they want and is a great chance for local women to meet like-minded people of all ages in a collaborative environment. It will be a fun and inspiring afternoon where participants can share their views on the needs of women in the community to help shape a thriving environment. Tickets for the event are already on sale and are limited to just 50 people per event. The morning session runs from 9-1pm and is $35 plus booking fee. The afternoon session runs from 1.303.30pm and is $10 plus booking fee. Tickets are available online via www.register.canbook.me/windos-event-2017.

Snake Boss Julia Baker is coming to Noosa as part of the region's first ever major event for International Women's Day.

Transport fixes flood in Beating the bottlenecks

A chairlift, more ferries and electric bus lanes are among some of the ideas designed to help relieve traffic congestion in Noosa. Joanna Ferris said the range of ideas submitted cover “just about everything that could be imagined”. “They include small electric buses, park-and-ride services, trams, free bicycles, dedicated electric bike and vehicle lanes, floating boardwalks, more ferries on the river, SUP channels on

the river, boom gates, cordon tolls, paid parking, multilevel parking, underground parking, e-vehicle charge stations, outdoor moving walkways, chairlifts, monorails and even making all of Noosa car-free,” she said. “Some ideas are more practical and feasible than others.” Mayor Tony Wellington

warned this was not the sort of issue where any one individual idea was necessarily correct. “Unfortunately, there is no simple, quick-fix solution to the peak holiday traffic issue. Furthermore, the Transport Strategy needs to consider the whole of the shire, not just Noosa Main Beach,”

Cr Wellington said. “We will be workshopping the best ideas with our traffic experts. When we have more concrete, detailed proposals they will be made available for comment. Eventually we will arrive at a Transport Strategy for adoption by council, ideally around mid-year.”

Noosa Today asked Mayor Tony Wellington about the major congestion at Hastings Street during the holiday period and whether a lack of planning in the past was to blame. Cr Wellington said major traffic was never imagined on the thensleepy, dirt roads of 1970s Hastings Street. “The road network to and from Hastings Street began as dirt tracks, gradually changing to sealed roads as the area developed,” he said. “The canal development known as Noosa Sound - formerly Hays Island - was developed in the 1970s. The Noosa Parade road reserve and its bridges were formalised at that time. In the 1970s there was little understanding of the pressures these roads would face some 40 years later.” Cr Wellington said the solution to Noosa’s traffic woes doesn’t lie in creating better access to Hastings Street. “Even if the access roads to Main Beach and Hastings Street were wider, or could be made wider, they would still be funnelling vehicles into a highly constricted area. This would not solve congestion issues,” he said. “Making it easier for people to drive and park simply encourages more people to attempt to do so. Long-term solutions will need to discourage private cars from key precincts, not encourage more vehicles.”

12331896-52-16

The Noosa Council has received over 750 ideas for managing local traffic woes with ideas such as boom gates, SUP channels and chairlifts all getting a look in. Deputy mayor and Transport Strategy Control Group member Frank Wilkie said simply mentioning the word ‘transport’ was enough to trigger enormous community interest. “Residents and stakeholder groups are very aware that transport management is critical to maintaining Noosa’s liveability. The challenge of ensuring access to the Main Beach precinct, particularly during peak holiday periods, has been a particular focus,” Cr Wilkie said. Residents delivered their ideas through the Your Say Noosa website portal, popup stalls and an online survey. “Collectively, we’ve received over 750 submitted ideas for managing Noosa’s transport issues. Many specific ideas appear repeatedly, but it’s an overwhelming response that shows this community is dedicated to preserving Noosa’s amenity for generations to come.,” Cr Wilkie said. Council’s planning and infrastructure project officers have the task of collating all the concepts offered to the council and project officer

Noosa’s ships of shame Pauline Hanson's One Nation party looks likely to come to Noosa, with plans to run a candidate in every Queensland seat.

One Nation unveils plan By Jolene Ogle

MP Glen Elmes takes a boat ride out to the derelict houseboat on the Noosa River bank. Vika has come in at $16,500. MSQ are calling for quotes to compare. “I want to give full marks to Maritime Safety for working through this whole process, and putting their hat out to the government for money to get this thing off our river. Full marks to them. "This demonstrates that we really do need a better system here. We need as a community to have a better say about the boats that come onto our river, how long they stay, the condition and that the sewage is pumped out regularly. "Noosa has the cleanest waterway in South East Queensland, the busiest waterway in South East Queensland. We want to make it better and we want to make it safer and it can be a real feather in our government's cap to work together with myself and council to set this authority up and roll this out in other areas in Queensland,“ Mr Elmes said.

The quote to remove the hulk has come in at $16,500 of state money. Mr Elmes says we need a better system for our waterways.

One Nation has confirmed it hopes to run a candidate in every seat in Queensland including Noosa if it can find the right candidates. One Nation State and National Secretary and candidate for Lockyer Jim Savage confirmed the party hopes to run a candidate in every Queensland seat but who will run in Noosa is yet to be determined. “We have had a huge number of applications for candidates all over the state,” he said. “I have at least 50 I haven’t even opened yet. We’re just battling our way through them. I haven’t seen this many applications to run as a candidate in a party for at least 20 years.” Mr Savage said the party hopes to run a candidate in every seat but the party wants to make sure they pick the best ones. “Whoever we run will have to be a good candidate,” he said. “We might get 10 applications for the seat but if they don’t cut the mustard, they won’t run. “So far we have had multiple applications for almost every seat.”

Member for Noosa Glen Elmes was again on the Noosa River this week to draw attention to the rotting hulks and took with him a media contingent. It’s an event that may seem familiar to voters. Mr Elmes was last on the Noosa River in the lead-up to the last state elections in January 2015, where he promised $2 million in funding should the LNP take government. The LNP didn’t win government and the hulks remained in Noosa River. This time, Mr Elmes took media out to the Vika, a derelict houseboat that has been sitting rotting in the Noosa River for more than 18 months. The vessel has been well-known to the Noosa River for many years. Originally, in 2007, the Vika was moored at Jetty 17 and was a hire boat for a local business, but when the business closed it was sold. The houseboat was then seemingly abandoned. Mr Elmes said Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) had been trying to track down the owner of the abandoned boat but weren’t able to, so it was now time to remove the unsightly eyesore. Mr Elmes praised the work of the MSQ and police service for their “exhaustive” efforts in trying to locate the owner, and said they did a great job on a very tight budget but the 18-month process demonstrated why Noosa River’s management needed to be kept local. “If Noosa Council has control of the river they would have rangers out here monitoring these types of vessels,” he said. “When things begin to look problematic, the rangers can be on the job.” Mr Elmes said he and Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington were continuing to push for the management of the river to be handed to Noosa Council. The MSQ is now awaiting quotes for the removal of the vessel with the first quote coming in at about $16,500. The removal of the vessel is expected to take place within a few weeks. “It is a lengthy process but worth it in the hope the owner will cough up the removal cost rather than the state. Unfortunatley that has not been possible in this instance," Mr Elmes said. Despite working with the QPS, the owner, believed to be now living in Victoria has never been contactable. His son has been contacted and sadly has no knowledge of his father’s location and has no contact with him. According to MSQ’s ‘Derelict Vessel Policy’, once all efforts to contact the owner have been completely exhausted a notice can be placed on the vessel declaring it derelict. The Vika recieved a derelict notice before Christmas, which has now expired and the MSQ are now free to arrange for the boat's removal and destruction. The first quote to remove the

The event is designed to raise awareness and bring an end to violence against women and children around the world.

Anyone who loves to move, groove or take a stand against domestic violence is invited to join rehearsals for the annual One Billion Rising. Every year a dedicated group of more than 100 dancers practise a choreographed dance to perform for residents with this year’s performance to be held on Friday 17 February. One Billion Rising was started in 2012, and is a global movement to end rape and sexual violence against women. The “billion” refers to the United Nation statistic that one in three women will be raped or beaten in her lifetime, or about one billion. Rehearsals are about to get underway, and anyone who can move at all is welcome to take part and join the global movement designed to stop violence against women. Rehearsals will be held at the Noosa Leisure Centre

A simple truth about Insurance Let’s be honest, insurance is not a purchase anyone is overly excited to make but it is crucial to your business survival. Unfortunately, it is not until a business needs to make a claim or requires assistance that they see the true value of good advice and support on the ground, when you need it. Research has shown that up to 70% (Insurance Council of Australia) of uninsured or under-insured businesses that incur a major insurable loss fail within the following year. Why? With 55 years combined experience in the profession, we know that the answer is far more simple than you might imagine; the right advice. By Jolene Ogle State Election Rumours Only the Greens have endorsed their candidate and we can safely assume current Noosa MP Glen Elmes will run for his seat again, but persistent rumours indicate local activist Robin Bristow will throw his hat into the ring. Mr Bristow has neither denied nor confirmed the rumours. Locals can also be heard whispering the name of Sandy Bolton as a candidate in the State Election, but she laughed when asked to confirm the rumour. Sandy did hint there may be an announcement in the first part of the year, so we will wait with baited breath.

Fire not suspicious The massive Coolum fires are still under investigation, but po-

lice have confirmed they are not considering the blaze as suspicious. A police spokesperson said no-one has been charged in relation to the fires that started on Thursday 19 January and burned more than 900 hectares of bushland, but we heard the fires were started by “someone doing something they shouldn’t have”. A spokesperson for the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) couldn’t confirm this and said the investigations into the fire are still ongoing to determine the cause of the blaze.

Detectives in Noosa Rumours have been swirling throughout the shire that a number of police detectives were in Noosa over the month of December.

Police wouldn’t confirm what or who they were investigating but did confirm the “Queensland Police Service is currently assessing allegations of corruption within the Noosa area” and “the matter remains ongoing”.

Bonsai and Rustica closed Many beer-lovers and foodies have been left devastated by the sudden closure of Pomona’s Bonsai Brewhouse and Rustica restaurant. Bonsai owner Matt said he didn’t want to discuss the reason for the sudden closure but he promised customers he planned to re-establish in either Pomona or Cooran. Council has confirmed they had nothing to do with the closure of the unique Bonsai venue and the much-loved Rustica restaurant. noosatoday.com.au

INBRIEF Well-behaved Aussies Police have reported last Thursday as the quietest Australia Day for arrests for as long as they can remember. Noosa Heads officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said Gympie Terrace was crowded and the river was heavy with traffic but most people were well behaved. Sen Sgt McReight said there was little police activity until after 6pm when a group of youths began misbehaving in Noosa Heads. “It’s a pleasing result for the day, save for one disturbance,” he said.

Caution, zebra crossing Sen Sgt McReight said he has received an influx of phone calls and letters complaining about motorists who almost run over pedestrians on zebra crossings. He said most of the complaints were coming from pedestrians using the crossings on Gibson Road in Noosaville and along Gympie Terrace. “Most people driving along there are too busy looking for a park or a restaurant,” he said. “But you need to be aware of pedestrian crossings.”

Greens standing to deliver By Jolene Ogle More than 50 Greens supporters crowded The J foyer on Wednesday 25 January as Joe Shlegeris was officially endorsed as the Greens candidate for the State Election - which is yet to be called. Greens party deputy leader Senator Larissa Waters travelled to Noosa to officially endorse Mr Shlegeris, who launched his campaign with a promise to use his power to secure better outcomes for Noosa. Mr Shlegeris said it was time to shake things up as Noosa has long been viewed as a “safe seat” and as such it has been ignored. “The worst thing which can ever happen to any electorate is to become a safe seat. For more than a decade now, Noosa has been safe LNP seat. Safe seats are always ignored,” he said. “An LNP state government looks at a safe LNP seat as a given. Such a seat never gets any attention because the government is pretty sure it can win the seat again no matter what.” Among his campaign promises was a pledge to gain maternity services for Noosa. Mr Shlegeris said it was time to “aim high” and an achievable target was a maternity ward at Noosa Hospital. “Many people don’t realise that the original plan for the Noosa Hospital included a complete pavilion for maternity care,” he said. “Somewhere along the way, this plan was simply dropped. Women and young families in Noosa have simply never had access to local maternity care. Until now the nearest facilities have been down in Nambour. Now that Nambour maternity is closing, the nearest facility for Noosa families will be in far-off Birtinya.” Mr Shlegeris said that was unacceptable and simply too far for heavily pregnant women to travel. “I don’t begrudge the residents of the southern Sunshine Coast their fancy new hospital,

Senator Larissa Waters with Greens candidate Joe Shlegeris at his official campaign launch on Wednesday 25 January. Among his policies is a promise to fight for a new maternity wing for Noosa. but decent quality health care is reasonably accessible, and Birtinya is simply too far away,” he said. “The time is right to raise this issue again. Not just because it would be a great thing to have proper maternity care accessible to people in the Noosa electorate, but also because we must aim high. “Public health services here in Noosa have been progressively cut and will continue to shrink unless we take strong steps to reverse the trend. We cannot simply aim to stop the decline in services. It’s too late for that.”

Mr Shlegeris acknowledged it was a “big ask” to demand a maternity service, but he said now is the right time. “It’s the best time we’ve ever seen. The continuing collapse of the exhausted old political parties makes it a near-certainty that neither will win a majority in the next Queensland government and that the next state government will be one which requires compromise and cooperation with the cross bench,” he said. “Noosa will only be relevant to the state government if we make it relevant, and we can only do that by telling the exhausted old parties

they’re through.” Mr Shlegeris has often criticised current Noosa MP Glen Elmes for a lack of action and for ignoring his “power” in Parliament, and as such will run his campaign on the hope he will be able to use his balance of power to gain benefits for the Noosa electorate. “For many months now I have been hammering the same theme: the Member for Noosa has had extraordinary power to use his vote for the good of Noosa, but he has declined to use it,” Mr Shlegeris said. But what will happen if Mr Shlegeris’ doesn’t have the bargaining power he hopes for and if his vote isn’t needed to pass legislation in government. “You still have to use the influence to the best of your ability,” he said. “You still have to raise the questions that affect Noosa and not make it easy.” Senator Waters said the Greens were hopeful Mr Shlegeris would win the election, but said voters could still send a strong message with their votes. “If he does fall short ... then people’s message would still be heard. The fact the seat can no longer be considered a safe seat would mean the voices of Noosa’s residents will be much, much stronger and the next parliament will know they can’t take those people for granted anymore,” she said. “Either way, it’s a powerful vote to back the Greens and to back Joe this time around.” Senator Waters said many voters are disenchanted with the major parties and fell as though they have been forgotten. “People are looking for an alternative where they can feel truly represented,” she said. “I think that’s why you see the vote for the older parties so low at this point in history. But what they see in the Greens is some actual positive solutions that puts people back in the heart of decision making again.”

Smokers to butt out in national parks

The Trashy Artisan Co-operative board members Tracey Upston and Ross Hepworth with founder Lucy Yule, second from left, and Powerhouse Collective founder Aimee Sherriff with baby Brave.

Grant to kick start business initiatives By Jolene Ogle A creative makers’ space and business community hub for working parents are just two of the economic initiatives to share in over $40,000 of council grants. The winners of the maiden Noosa Council Economic Development Grant scheme can now get their business ideas and creative dreams underway. Lucy Yule of The Trashy Artist Co-operative and Aimee Sherriff of the Powerhouse Collective are two of the local entrepreneurs who can now kick start their initiatives. Over 18 months ago, Aimee had a dream to create a community hub where working parents with home-based businesses could come and work with like-minded

people. The difference is, this space would also offer on-site day-care to cater for the hundreds of working parents in the Noosa and Sunshine Coast region. Aimee, who has spent the past 18 months creating a supportive network of over 200 working parents, said the extra financial boost meant she could finally start to make her dream a reality. The funds will be used to fitout an office space in Noosaville where parents can hire a desk, pop their child into the on-site care and get busy growing their business. “It was key to me that I build community first,” she said. “Now, when I go to open within 12 weeks, I will have a community of people with me.” Lucy also has a dream to create

a network of supportive business owners, but within the Noosa artisan scene. The funds Lucy received will be used to hold workshops for anyone wanting to learn a new skill from manual arts to glass blowing, as well as create a makers’ space where artisans can create their works and grow their business. Lucy’s love for art lies in the upcycling of hard waste and she wants to help educate students, artisans and anyone interested in art about how to use waste creatively. “I want to enable people. I want to take lost skills and teach them to others and people can take those skills for self-interest or to build their business,” she said. “The Trashy Artisan Co-operative is about bringing people to-

gether through networking and to encourage small business.” Lucy said upcycling and being environmentally conscious was also important to the group. If you would like to find out more about The Trashy Artisan Co-operative or to keep up to date with developments, like their Facebook page. Anyone interested in The Powerhouse community business hub can follower the Powerhouse Collective’s Facebook page. Both groups will continue to fund-raise, with the Powerhouse Collective holding a fund-raising retreat at Noosa North Shore from 18 to 19 February. More information is available on the group’s Facebook page.

Visitors to Noosa National Park are now breathing easier with smokers needing to move 10 metres away from most visitor facilities when smoking. National Parks Minister Dr Steven Miles said the new restrictions applied to picnic tables and barbecues, toilet blocks, jetties and information shelters, as well as occupied camp sites. “These restrictions will protect the health and well-being of park visitors, and we hope smokers will consider their own health and the health of others and observe the new restrictions,” Dr Miles said. “We want to support people who want to stop smoking, and protect those who choose not to smoke. “While the focus will be on educating visitors about the new rules, rangers do have the power to issue on-the-spot fines of $243. “The restrictions will apply to parts of 272 national parks, including 245 formalised campgrounds and 150 day-use areas, and bush camping sites.” Dr Miles said new no-smoking signage is being installed, with signs striking a balance between informing people and avoiding visual pollution of these natural areas. Visitors will also be reminded of the new restrictions via messages on camping tags and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service web pages. The national park smoking restrictions are part of Queensland Health’s recent changes to the Tobacco and Other Smoking Products Act 1998, to make more public places smoke-free. Dr Miles said the national park restrictions were also expected to help cut down on litter, and reduce the risk of wildfires.

By Jolene Ogle The Noosa Hinterland will star in the popular HGTV show House Hunters International when filming for a Sunshine Coast episode wraps later today. Led by producer, director and Kin Kin resident Anita Poteri, the film crew has followed the house hunting journey of Brisbane-based couple Steve and Fiona Henley as they look for their perfect home. Steve is keen to make a tree-change from the urban environment of the city and build his dream dome home on acreage, but wife Fiona wants a more modern, move-in ready home. Over the four days of filming, Noosa-based real estate expert Bredam Buckenham shows the Henleys through three homes; a Landsborough home, vacant land in Kin Kin and on Monday (30 January) they inspected a dome home in Pomona. The three-bedroom, twobathroom home was built 12 years ago and offers exceptional views, but will it be a good compromise for the couple? Noosa Today was on the scene for a behind the scenes look at filming but wasn’t allowed to know which home the buyers chose. Everyone will have to wait for the show to air on 9Life in six months' time. Anyone interested in featuring on the show can contact Anita Poteri directly on 5485 4226.

chance of survival for anyone who suffers a sudden cardiac arrest. Noosacare CEO Megan D’Elton said the AED will allow trained staff to perform quick defibrillation, meaning an increased survival rate for patients until ambulance officers arrive. The life-saving devices have been received as part of a grant from the Queensland

Government and the Gambling Community Benefit Fund grant, a fund established to assist community groups and organisations such as Noosacare to meet the needs of local communities. “As Noosacare Inc is a community owned not-forprofit organisation, we are really appreciative of all the support we receive to purchase such valuable medical equipment,” she said.

Noosacare staff are now more equipped than ever to save lives after their two sites received defibrillators this week. The defibrillators, also known as Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), will be available for use in the case of emergencies at both the Kabara site in Cooroy and the Carramar site in Tewantin. Taking Noosa to the world By Tourism Noosa Ceo Damien Massingham As we officially say farewell to the summer holidays this weekend, by all accounts from our members it has been a great summer, with many of our operators reporting visitors have booked their next holiday for summer 2017. This is a very encouraging trend and highlights that visitors to Noosa are loving their quintessential Australian holiday experience in Noosa. Thank you to all the operators and the Noosa community for providing such a warm welcome to our visitors. On the back of summer holidays, our marketing activities have already commenced for the year with our marketing manager, Louise Terry, taking Noosa to the world! Com-

mencing with a trade mission in Singapore with other tourism partners before heading to Europe and the UK as part of Tourism and Events Queensland’s (TEQ) Queensland on Tour roadshow. Louise has met with more than 300 product managers from key wholesalers and retail travel agents in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Copenhagen, finishing in London where she also undertook a Noosa Roadshow with our in-market representation company, SLC. This focus on the international market has been guided by Tourism Noosa’s current Global Market Strategy which sets a vision to build a sustainable global market for Noosa, focusing on value over volume through brand profile, beneficial partnerships, trade engagement, product develop-

ment and consumer marketing. The latest international visitor statistics for Noosa highlight not only growth in visitor numbers, but importantly the amount that these visitors are spending while in Noosa is also up with both at unprecedented highs. Noosa’s international visitor spend was up 73 per cent to reach $105.9 million, with annual increases in spend across all of Noosa’s major inbound markets. This increase compares to Queensland’s being up 10.6 per cent and Australia’s up 11.5 per cent for the same period*. (*Source: Tourism Research Australia International Visitor Survey, year ending September 2016). These positive results highlight the need to continue to plan for our future. As such Tourism Noosa will soon be launching our Tourism Strategy for

2017-'22 to ensure Noosa continues to be a key destination for our target markets and, in particular, our international markets. In implementing this strategy, we will be working with all our stakeholders including our members and the Noosa Council to help address a range of matters including transport, to help continue a positive visitor and community experience of Noosa. As we look to the future of tourism in Noosa, it is important to remember that tourism is the largest economic contributor for the Noosa region, injecting $940 million into the Noosa economy over the last year, via visitor expenditure. This has kept over 16,000 local people in employment in Noosa. All the best for 2017.

Life skills: you gotta catch ’em young After more than 20 drownings throughout the holiday season, a Noosa swimming instructor is urging people to learn to swim as soon as possible. Throughout the 2016/’17 holiday season, 22 people drowned Australia-wide, and just this month a girl was

taken to hospital after nearly drowning in a pool at the RACV Resort in Noosa. Noosa Aquatic Centre (NAC) swim program supervisor Rita Montague said she was glad to see an increase in parents teaching their kids to swim from an early age.

“Parents are becoming more educated as we see many more starting lessons with their babies from 6 months of age, which is great,” she said. “However, we also see many children stop swimming too soon to take up another sport. Swimming is a life skill,

not just a sport but a skill that may save their life one day. “Teach a child to swim well when they are young and they have that skill for life.” Ms Montague said it was important to keep up lessons so children can learn to survive in different aquatic environments. “Besides supervision and swimming skills, children also need water safety knowledge. They need to be aware of the dangers and know how to survive in different aquatic environments. I believe that is

why we are seeing so many teens and adults drowning,” she said. “Many children are not given the opportunity (to experience different environments) for whatever reason and some children only get the opportunity of attending school swimming programs. “However, with school curriculums taking precedence, school swimming programs are on the decline. So we have many children finishing primary school who can’t swim 50 metres.”

Looking for a Quality Kindergarten Program?

Adeona Noosaville 3 Anchor Street, Noosaville Learning to swim is fun and can save your life: Giselle, Harper, George, Samantha and Sarah enjoying a lesson in the pool.

Ms Montague said it was never too late to learn to swim. The NAC offers free swimming lessons for babies aged 3 to 6 months to help them become familiar with the water. Term lessons will start soon as school returns, but the centre can cater for all ages and abilities from babies to adults and everyone in between. Phone the NAC on 5448 0288 or email naclts@noosa. qld.gov.au for more information on how to get started with swimming lessons today.

Rolling along together Calling all skaters! The first ever skating day will be held at the Noosa Leisure Centre on Sunday 5 February and all women over 18 are invited. The skating group first started when mother-of-two Tanya Stevens of Tewantin put the call out on Facebook. Within minutes the Tewantin resident was overwhelmed with responses. Since then Tanya has been working closely with the Noosa Leisure Centre which supported her dream to have a large space where keen skaters can safely roll together. “I can’t believe it’s happening,” she said. The first ever roller skating group will be held at the Noosa Leisure Centre this Sunday 5 February from 10am until noon. Skaters need to bring four wheel skates, not inline, and the cost to skate is only $11 per person. Anyone who would like more information can contact Tanya via her group Facebook page, Tewantin/Noosa Rollers.

Event organiser Tanya Stevens is getting her skates ready for the first roller skate day this Sunday at the Noosa Leisure Centre from 10am until noon.

All go for the green bin thing Noosa Council is urging residents to get in early and start using a green bin before the service is rolled out to all urban households in September. Judy Tulloch of Marcus Beach said her garden waste bin saves her countless trips to the tip and is a great way to dispose of backyard lawn and plant clippings. “Garden waste bins are a great idea. It makes it so easy to dispose of plant material,” she said. She and husband Colin Ingram have been using their garden waste bin for their off-cuts, weeds and branches for years. The couple are among 4500 Noosa households already using the service, which will be rolled out to the majority of households in urban areas as a standard service in September. The standard three-bin service is included in the council’s new waste contract to help reduce the amount of organic garden waste entering landfill. Expanding the garden waste bin service will divert an estimated additional 1150 tonnes of organic matter from the landfill every year. The council’s acting waste manager Ian Florence said this is important because garden waste, as it decomposes in landfill, produces methane gas, which contributes significantly to the council’s emissions. The garden waste bin service is a key initiative of the council’s Towards Zero Waste strategy. It responds to the recommendations of the recent community jury which investigated ways to reduce the amount of organic waste ending up in Noosa’s landfill. For those already using them, garden waste bins are a winner. “The green bin is invaluable for

Keep the air fair Why is it that a person can fly from Melbourne to Townsville for $89, yet a person from the Sunshine Coast must first pay more than travel to Brisbane in order to fly to any destination north of the Sunshine Coast? Same goes to fly to our nation’s capital, Canberra - no flights from the Sunshine Coast - must fly from Brisbane to Sydney, then on to Canberra. Another Lobb-yist Good on you Woody (Noosa Today, 26 January). How long have the residents been complaining to the Noosa papers about John Lobb? Do the Noosa papers represent the shire and the residents? Obviously not. They seem to support John Lobb who doesn’t live in the shire and print his rubbish. What’s going on? What’s the big secret as to why you keep supporting him and his views all the time? We have visitors who arrive and always like to read our local news and every time they pick up the paper and read about John Lobb we have to tell them he doesn’t live in the shire and they look at us puzzled as to why a local paper would support his views. Like Woody, I have had enough as well to bin the paper. Pam Swan, Tewantin.

Not pretty I certainly agree with the comments of George Hunt (Noosa Today, 26 January). I believe euthanasia of plans for Noosa Civic development is inspired to encourage shopping at Noosa Junction. The last time I was there (years ago, thank goodness!) some of the off-putting retailers were a $2 shop, T-shirt printer, an adult marital aids shop, and a synthetic cannibas/ drug seller - a real class act! Tewantin TAFE is still in the “too hard” basket and the council is still silent about anything being done by the state to Noosa River, Lake MacDonald, or Cooroy’s dangerous railway bridge intersection. Does anyone do anything in the council offices beside the night cleaner? Mark and Jan Rose, Cooroy.

We built it - and they came Build it and they’ll come. We upgraded the roads and now exasperate ourselves on how to solve the traffic congestion? That’s political thinking. The ‘herd’ snail-drive to work for 11 months bumper to bumper, queue in supermarkets, cafes, then come here to do it all over again. They call it a holiday. Through marketing came the ‘bulldozers.’ They don’t understand the National Park ‘walking’ track. Initially put there to harmonise with the wildlife that have now run away. All I want to ask is: ‘What are they running from?’ The itchy-bums are the pseudo controllers of the roads. I often ponder what their hurry is? Maybe they just can’t sit still - possibly due to worms. The uninvited future eaters arrived like gatecrashers. They don’t get roundabouts, fauna, neighbours or communities. They fly around the world dodging tax, bringing their black money to invest here throw-

Kathy Perry sent in this picture of Lizzie giving her very best Australia Day smile. That paddling pool must be pretty good! If you have a photo of our wildlife, landscape or lifestyle here in Noosa Shire, send it through to Lenscape at newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au ing their scraps to our kids on their way out. Bob the Bodgy Builders arrived wanting to alter our tropical lifestyle. Obviously from cold climates as their air-con reliant houses resemble hot dogboxes. No outdoor living, tiny windows with not a shade tree in sight. The Roger Ramjets don’t respect our environment, obviously, from another planet - Uranus. Their razorhands seem to work in with the Bodgy Bob’s square pants. They hate trees, leaves, bracken and demolish the lot. Who gives a brass razoo if nests are prevalent? To them they are superior to an animal, even the ape. Noosa was once a seaside village for holidaymakers, now it’s a storage house for the pretenders. Jen Oakley, Noosa.

Lobb one out I am in complete agreement with Woody Dass (Noosa Today, 26 January) regarding the drivel written by John Lobb and associates about the Noosa Shire Council. As a suggestion, Noosa Today could make letters to the editor as a liftout and it could then be “lobbed“ straight away into the rubbish bin. Tony Marsh, Tewantin.

Just another summer Severe weather events - what catastrophically severe weather events have we been experiencing? Just another Australian summer, not much different to those we have had off and on since 1788, or maybe it is the record low temperatures being experienced in the northern hemisphere.

16 NOOSA TODAY | Thursday, 2 February, 2017

Margaret Wilkie (Noosa Today, 26 January) must be an adherent of the Mike Mann (hockey stick infamy) school of climate science whose immortal words epitomise what their theory of man-made climate change is all about - “As we all know, this isn’t about truth at all; it’s about plausibly deniable accusations”. Phillip Rutherford, Cooroibah.

What’s in a date? There’s a debate going again regarding the change of Australia Day from 26 January to 9 May. The reason put forward is that the 26 January celebrates the invasion of Australia by the white people. That may be true depending on how it happened. I wasn’t here then but I understand Captain Cook, Christopher Columbus, Abel Tasman and a few other explorers were sent out to discover lands that would in the future sustain their growing populations. (I don’t know what the reactions from the Martians will be in 200 years’ time). Without being disrespectful to the original owners of this land, maybe it was an invasion, but as in today’s world we know invasions are a lot more with a loss of many lives, having survived World War 2. But we do know for a fact the appalling treatment of the natives afterwards and for many years is to be ashamed of and no amount of apologies can ever be enough. But by whom? Reconciliation yes. I and my relatives never got one from the Vikings, Saxon and Romans and luckily we survived a beauty of an attempted one from 1938 to 1945. One thing is certain and there's no question “all" Australians should be celebrating

those they survived. Especially the one on the 19/2/42 as today would have been a lot different for all concerned had that one been lost (with many thanks to our allies.) As the song goes, “What a difference a day makes.“ So we should all be thankful for surviving every one. Ours is 28 November 1968. That 10 pounds by two was worth it (plus two freebies). E. Wright, Sunrise Beach.

High price of entry to housing market Sydney has been named one of the most expensive cities in the world coming second to Hong Kong in the annual Demographia International Housing Affordability Survey. The report studied 87 major metropolitan regions and used data from the third quarter of 2015 to determine which cities were the most expensive. Hong Kong topped the list where the median home costs 19 times the median annual pre-tax household income, but Sydney came a close second with a house price multiple score of 12.2. Demographia considers a house priceto-household income ratio of 5.1 or more is “severely unaffordable”, with 4.1 to 5 “seriously unaffordable”. The study also found all five of Australia’s major metropolitan areas were “severely unaffordable” with a typical house in an Australian city coasting 5.6 times the median household income. Melbourne placed sixth on the list of the 10 least affordable major housing markets coming in with a median multiple of 9.5, Auckland came in fourth with 10.0 and Vancouver was second with 11.8. While the news is shocking to those lucky enough to not deal with the Sydney property market, the report is old news to Sydney locals such as Shannon Jones, who moved from the Sunshine Coast to Sydney to live with her husband, Scott.

Sydney has the second most expensive real estate market in the world, compared to income, according to the latest data. Shannon now pays $550 per week for a one-bedroom apartment in the outer suburbs of Sydney and said the couple deserted any hopes of owning a home when they moved to Sydney. Shannon and Scott earn a decent wage by working in the construction industry, but a crippling median house value of $1 million has priced even them out of the market. “If we were to buy in Sydney, we would

have to buy an investment property because we couldn’t afford the repayments ourselves,” Shannon said. “Also, having to have the 10 per cent deposit is a struggle considering that could be up to $100,000 for a $1 million home. “If I was still living on the Sunshine Coast that $100,000 would be almost a third of the cost of the same type of property I’m living in now.”

Shannon said in her opinion the continued popularity of Sydney’s housing market means there’s no end in sight and no price relief for young couples wanting to buy their first home. “To me, the market will continue to operate as over-priced. People in Sydney will continue to buy and if they are buying then why would the market drop,” she said.

behind the Gavel

Keen buyers driving auction results to incredible levels It might surprise you to know that Queensland has been the country’s biggest hive of auction activity throughout January, hosting an incredible 433 auctions last week alone - more than double Victoria’s 147 and New South Wales’s 144. A big driver behind this has been the high number of visitors to our region from the southern capitals and their keen willingness to buy property via the auction process. Holidaying here every year, many are now planning ahead for their retirement. For sellers, it’s the ideal combination. Auction crowds of up to 100 people have been yielding 15 plus bidders. Another unique factor this holiday season is the high number of properties that are hitting the market for the first time in decades. It’s usually a very emotional process for the vendors and the culmination of many months of debate among family members. With change a part of life, letting go of the past is the natural next step for these families, for any number of reasons.

From my perspective, it’s always humbling to call the auction for a property that’s been tightly held over generations - there’s a rich fabric of history that forms part of the property’s story and I feel it’s important prospective buyers understand that they’re not just looking at bricks and mortar or square metreage. One last piece of market information I’d pass along is that even though most of the holiday makers have now gone home, there are plenty yet to buy who are still ready and willing to act remotely. With current conditions being as close to ideal as you could wish for and looking likely to stay that way for at least the next few months, 2017 should be a good time for anyone who’s been considering a sale to move forward. - Gordon Macdonald, founder of The Auction Group

live today NOOSA’S LIFESTYLE GUIDE

Chris and his pooches will ride waves at First Point Noosa once again this year at the Noosa Festival of Surfing on Sunday 5 March at 4pm.

Pooch paws rule the waves The surfing dogs event has been drawing huge crowds to the Noosa Festival with their antics for several years now, each time adding a little something new to their repertoire. VetShopAustralia.com.au and Chris de Aboitiz promise the bar will be set even higher this year. Chris has had a busy year, travelling to the United States to bring his training techniques to the Californian public, save and train a rescue dog called Hobie and compete in a dog surfing competition. Back in Australia, he has been continuing noosatoday.com.au

his ‘dog whispering’ with his loving sidekicks and planning the year ahead. Chris and his four-legged companions will be hitting the road over the next six weeks, making their way up the East Coast, starting at Sandy Point, Victoria, on a 13-stop tour. At each venue, the SUP Dog OZ team will be presenting demonstrations and workshops for the general public, both in surfing and stand up paddling with canine companions, and in better bonding with their dogs on dry land.

“I’m looking forward to travelling again, meeting new people and teaching people how to have a happy, fun time with their dogs while giving them structure and exercise,” says Chris. “It [SUP dog surfing] is such a fun, simple and easy way to build a better relationship with your dog,” he said. The tour culminates in a Noosa Heads workshop the day prior to the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing, Friday 3 March, open to the public and fun for everyone, on the water and on land.

The official VetShopAustralia.com.au Surfing Dogs Spectacular takes place at 4pm on Sunday 5 March, and Chris has something pretty special up his sleeve. “I’m going to be bringing a big inflatable SUP with me this year,” he says. “It’s 17 feet long and five-feet wide. We’re hoping to get some members of the public on board with their dogs and have a bunch of us surfing at the same time. It’s going to be a great event," he said.

Thrilling, but not too deep The Shallows Rating: PG-13 (for bloody images, intense sequences of peril, and brief strong language) Starring: Blake Lively In the thriller The Shallows, when Nancy (Blake Lively) is surfing on a secluded beach, she finds herself on the feeding ground of a great white shark. Though she is stranded only 200 yards from shore, sur-

vival proves to be the ultimate test of wills, requiring all of Nancy’s ingenuity, resourcefulness and fortitude. The Shallows transcends tired shark-attack tropes with nasty thrills and a powerful performance from Blake Lively. For those who prefer survival dramas to be bare-bones and gritty, like Open Water, The Shallows may come across as the CW version. Its photogenic slickness does

detract from its terror somewhat, but makes the film more marketable to different age groups and translates to a younger age group. There aren’t a lot of gruesome moments in this flick - there are only a couple of shut-your-eyes moments for kids. If you don’t mind yours watching one or two blurred out bloody moments which are over in a flash, then the kiddos will love it. Especially if they are into surfing, there are

Laguna Bistro, 3pm Brad Schultz.

some great surf scenes. It’s a fun flick for the older family and gives a few good jumps. Not a life-changer or a chatabout-it-later flick, but a solid ‘Friday night with popcorn, turn it up and enjoy the ride’ pleaser. Probably not for those under 10, those with a fear of the ocean, or the super squeamish, but lovers of Jaws flicks and tweens will love it.

WHAT’SON

Take the surfing plunge By Hollie Harris Noosa arguably has some of the best surfing points in the world rivalling any of its more well-known Gold Coast point breaks without the high-rises along the foreshore. Blessed with the foresight of the earlier councils, Noosa set aside 4000 hectares to form Noosa National Park. Your morning here in Noosa is often greeted with glassy conditions and the choice of all the glorious points, the Groin between the rock walls, A Bay and the many peaks on our open beaches. Surfing is as synonymous with Noosa as is Hastings Street. Recently named as one of a few carefully selected World Surfing Reserves, most have wondered at one time or another, whether they have what it takes to brave a Noosa wave. Often thought of as a sport for sun bleach haired youngsters, our Noosa waves are kind enough to the most ungraceful and inflexible mature bodies. In the right conditions, the waves here are perfect for taking the plunge to finally cross off ‘learn to surf’ off your bucket list and know whatever age or fitness level you are, as long as you can swim and do a push up, you might just fall in love with the ocean in a whole new way. Noosa residents are blessed to have some fantastic learn to surf programs here in Noosa where you can gain expert advice and tuition from folk who are genuinely passionate about the sport. For as little as around 65 smackers you can treat yourself to lessons which might just see you riding your first wave. Merricks Noosa Learn to Surf pro-

gram offers an array of specifically structured lessons to suit the absolute beginner through to competition surfers and their patented 1-2-3 method actually guarantees you’ll be standing in your first lesson. Go Ride a Wave is another option offering surfing lessons conducted in waist deep water, to keep it safe for beginners and the Surfdancer Academy of Surf is a training centre with a difference. They offer the basics plus an innovative, creative and cutting edge. These guys also hold Surf Groms meets for all levels down at the River Mouth to enhance kids surf skills from beginner to expert on long or short boards. More of a do-it-yourself person? There are options to hire out a board and have a crack at it all on your own. Golden Breed, Noosa Longboards and Underground Boards are all Surf board stores right by the beach where you can select the perfect board for yourself to have a play on for cheap biccies. These guys all offer incredible local knowledge, and will give you a few tips for the current conditions, too. The bonus is, if you pick it up and get the bug, you can gain some insight to what type of board you might like to put on your birthday wish list. You’re never too old, too unfit, too scared to try something you have always wanted to achieve. Living near our beautiful coastline and having access to the fun of the ocean is a pretty good reason to have a try at something new. So, there’s no time like now - go and ride a wave.

Learning to surf is a breeze for some kids but many of us adults think its too late to give it go. Picture: SURFSHOTS

Rockers dig in against quarry

noosatoday.com.au

Join OKA and other bands as they come together to raise funds for a fight against a local quarry this Sunday at the Coolum Civic Centre from 2.30pm. Civic Centre to help raise funds for the fight against the quarry. Doors will open at 2.30pm and event-goers will be treated to the sounds of Euphoria, Eric McKinney, DJ Jason J Sun and much-loved locals Oka. There will also be a sausage sizzle, licensed bar and plenty of entertainment for the kids to make for a great family-friendly event. Tickets are $20 online or $25 at the door (cash only) for adult, juniors under 17 are $10

online and $12 at the door. Kids under 10 are free and an family pass for two adults and two kids is $50 online or $60 at the door. Visit www.trybooking. com/onjr to buy tickets online with all proceeds going directly to the No Blasted Quarry campaign. The group also has a Go Fund Me page for anyone who would like to support the group that way, at https:// www.gofundme.com/yandina-creek-quarry-fight

12338324-LB05-17

Coolum residents are rallying together to reduce the impact of a planned quarry in their hinterland neighbourhood and what better way to fight a noisy quarry than with a community concert. The residents are fighting a proposed rock quarry along North Arm-Yandina Road in Yandina Creek that was refused by the council but then approved by the Planning and Environment Court on the basis the council provides a list of conditions. The community wants to make sure the conditions are as “stringent” as possible to “ensure the safety and amenity of the local residents”. The Yandina Creek Progress Association (YCPA) president Alex Watson said the group held concerns about the impact of heavy vehicles on roads such as Coolum Yandina Road. “We know Coolum Yandina Road has tragically been the location of a number of serious and fatal accidents. The extra 100-plus quarry trucks will increase the risk of accidents and rapidly deteriorate the road surface,” he said. The YCPA plans to return to court to support the Sunshine Coast Council to ensure the stringent conditions are upheld, but the group needs a barrister. Tasty and nutritious fare By Hollie Harris Did you know that only eight per cent of people stick to their New Year resolutions? Generally, people have the tendency to make goals that are unrealistic, and therefore, ultimately unachievable. Making grand declarations and setting unmanageable goals may not be the best way to leap into a fresh new year. While these goals may seem enthusiastic, the inability to stick to these goals can often lead to us feeling a little disheartened. The trick is to set manageable goals changes to your daily lifestyle that are positive, inspiring and achievable. Instead of focusing on the things you may need to cut out of your diet, start looking at things you can add. By incorporating healthier options into your diet, you will find that your desire for the notso-good things tends to fall to the way side. Virtually every health authority recommends that we get six to eight servings of vegetables and fruits per day and very few of us actually get that, so adding juices is an easy way to virtually guarantee that you will reach your daily target for vegetables. Drinking fresh juices on a regular basis helps you absorb all the nutrients from the vegetables. This is important because most of us have impaired digestion as a result of making lessthan-optimal food choices over many years. This limits your body’s ability to absorb all the nutrients from the vegetables. Juicing will help to “pre-digest“ them for you, so you will receive most of the nutrition, rather than having it go down the toilet. Many people eat the same vegetable salads or side dishes every day. This limits the number of different phytochemicals in your diet, as each vegetable will offer unique benefits. Juices can add a wide variety of vegetables that you may not normally enjoy eating whole. In this day and age we are always looking for ways to boost our immune system and increase our energy. We are looking for fast and simple ways to nourish ourselves and families. If you simply don’t have time or can’t get your head around juicing, there are incredible pre-made options to stock up on to keep on hand such as Noosa Cleanse in the Belmondos food market in Rene Street. These guys have created a delicious range of 100 per cent organic cold pressed juices and Juno Kombucha which aim to detoxify your body naturally - offering vibrant nutrients and living enzymes that bring your body into balance. One cold pressed juice or bottle of Juno Kombucha added into your day could make a huge difference to your health and have you feeling and seeing the difference.

Not time to juice at home? Noosa Cleanse offer a huge range of 100 per cent organic cold-pressed juices to add into your daily health routine.

What’s lurking in that lunchbox? By Hollie Harris The Cancer Council will today reveal health shocks found in the average lunchbox, with parents preparing to pack the first of about 200 lunches per child over the year from today. Research shows many lunchboxes contain the recommended serves of fruit but can be alarmingly low on vegetables and high on hidden sugar and salt. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said parents may be packing foods that appear healthy, and would be shocked to discover high levels of saturated fat, sugar and salt. “Balancing the weekday lunchbox is a difficult task - we understand the time, financial, emotional and practical pressures Queensland parents face,” Ms Clift said. “Too often lunchbox snacks are promoted as healthy choices, but contain high levels of saturated fat, sugar and salt, which can negatively impact children’s health and wellbeing. “The majority of lunchbox items should be wholefoods from the five recommended food groups. “Parents should choose fresh, whole foods such as fruit, vegetables, legumes, lean meats, eggs, poultry, legumes and beans, wholegrains high in fibre and low fat dairy products including plain milk, yoghurt and cheese for school lunches. “Processed and packaged foods should be avoided as much as possible.” Cancer Council Queensland has released a go-to guide for parents shopping for school lunches. “When time is a factor and packaged food products need to be used,

Tasty and healthy lunchboxes help kids to have lifelong healthy eating habits. it’s important for parents to read food labels and look for the Health Star Rating on packaged products,” Ms Clift said. “Parents should check the kilojoule content on packaged food products, keeping in mind that one serve of a ‘discretionary food item’ is 600kj. “Using the 100g column on the

nutritional panel is the best way to compare products at the supermarket. “It is also important to read the ingredients list and take note of the sugar, saturated fat and sodium (salt) levels. “Choose breads and cereals with 3g or more fibre per serve, aim for the lowest saturated fat (less than 3g per 100g is best) and generally

choose foods with less than 10g per 100g of fat. “Try to avoid large amounts of added sugars. Aim for less than 15g of sugar per 100g and check that sugar is not listed high on the ingredient list. “A balanced lunchbox should contain one serve of lean protein, wholegrains (such as wholemeal

bread, wraps, rice and muesli), one or two pieces of fruit, vegetables, low-fat dairy and plenty of water to keep kids hydrated.” The Australian Dietary Guidelines recommend four and a half serves of vegetables daily for children aged four to eight, and five serves a day for children aged nine to 11.

A healthy option for the lunchbox Adding some sweet snacks into their lunchbox can be easy and doesn’t have to be a piece of cake, a roll up or a muffin. Vita-wheats are full of goodness and can be slathered with Nutella then topped with your child’s favourite fruit. Those with a sweet tooth will not notice all the nutrition packed into these. Swapping the Nutella for cream cheese can cut the sugars down if you prefer.

Ingredients 1 tablespoon Nutella.

· · 4 Arnott’s Vita-Weat Original crisp breads.

· 1 small banana, thinly sliced. · 4 strawberries, hulled, thinly sliced.

· This can also be a super yummy breakfast topping for multi grain toast too.

Kids will love this one and not even realise its full of goodness.

Fight against cancer call will die from the disease. Mr Dunn said Cancer Council is proud to join with the Union for International Cancer Control as champions of World Cancer Day in Queensland, in solidarity with all those affected. “On a global scale, currently 8.2 million people die from cancer worldwide each year. Of these, about half (four million people) die prematurely (aged 30 to 69 years),” he said. “We can, I can, Queensland can make a difference. You can reduce your individual risk of preventable cancers by simple healthy lifestyle choices, including being active, eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking and limiting alcohol. “Get involved today and help spread the word about World Cancer Day - post, tweet, and share stand with the world in the fight against cancer." This Saturday 4 February marks World Cancer Day a global initiative focusing on the fight against cancer. World Cancer Day aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness and education about the disease, pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action. The theme for 2017 is “We Can, I Can” - demonstrating that everyone has a role to play in cancer control. Throughout this week, Cancer Council Queensland will be highlighting the actions everyone can do to reduce our burden of cancer - both locally and globally. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Professor Jeff Dunn AO is urging everyone to take part in World Cancer Day whether it’s through an event or by joining the conversation online using the hashtags #WorldCancerDay and #WeCanICan. “Your support makes a difference to all Queenslanders, all cancers,” he said. More than 26,000 Queenslanders will be diagnosed with cancer this year alone, and about 8600

Seniors anxious about wealth

Meeting notices

A recent report has dispelled a common belief older people are hoarding their wealth so they can pass it on to their children. The National Seniors’ Australia Social Survey, in conjunction with Challenger, asked seniors about their current financial situations and what they expected in the future. National Seniors’ director of research Professor Philip Taylor said nearly 3000 seniors responded to the survey, with the results contained in the report Over 50s: Still not confident about their retirement income. “Less than half the people surveyed believe their super will last their retirement and nearly three-quarters (74 per cent) say they want to maintain minimum savings levels, Prof Taylor said. “They believe the money should be put aside for unforeseen expenses such as medical costs, home and car repairs, and to pay for aged care - if they need it. The report also highlights how many retirees are not well prepared to manage their finances in retirement. Jeremy Cooper, Challenger’s chairman, Retirement Income, observed that many retirees were not comfortable in managing their finances in retirement. “Unfortunately for many Australian retirees there is a limited availability of suitable tools, help and guidance for them to manage their retirement income. This reduces their peace of mind and we should be able to do better. Only a small minority indicated their money should be handed down to their families. “Only around one in five people said a motive for saving was to make a be-

Try out for the table By Bruce Blakemore The 2017 table tennis season is set to kick off soon with a free try-out day to be held on Wednesday 8 February. All interested competition players should come along to the try-out night that starts at 7pm and check out the facilities and take the opportunity to join the friendly group. All players are graded and receive a handicap to allow an equal chance against the better opponents. Competition seasons run on average 8-10 weeks, usually under a team format, with trophies awarded to winning teams and best performing individuals. The club is now based at the Noosa Leisure Centre at Wallace Park next to the library. Competition is on Wednesday nights from 7pm and social/senior play is held Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 10-noon. Call 5474 5526 for any further information or check out the club on Facebook.

All players had some excellent shots and on the 20th end the team of Sheena Millar, Judy Muir, Daryl Millar and skip Keith Muir were leading Rick Goulding, Bill Alford, Gaye Bible and skip Veronis O’Connor 22-21. However, Veronis rallied her team and they picked up two shots on the last end to give them victory 23-22. Congratulations to all players on an excellent contest. Sydney surf’s up for clubs Between the

flags RON LANE

For many years the Australia Day surf carnivals held in Sydney at Manly and Freshwater have been considered top of the calendar. With such a reputation they are attended by the top competitive clubs, thus ensuring that those who compete will be up against some of Australia’s finest. If our lifesavers are to achieve, then this sort of competition is absolutely essential. With Sunshine Beach and Noosa being aware of this, both clubs this year made the decision to have some representatives competing and looking at the results they definitely made the right decision. There can be no doubt that the names of Sunshine and Noosa will be on the lips of many officials who worked these carnivals in the water and boat sections. What better way to start than to give a big well done to Sunshine’s U15 Ruby Nolan. This young lady stunned not only officials but also her team mates by achieving the following on Thursday at Freshwater - first in the U15 surf swim and first in the iron woman, then as a team member first in the U/15 (female) Cameron. Then at Manly on the weekend she made it a double by again winning the swim and iron woman and the Cameron relay and this was followed by a first in the board relay. Another starting to draw attention was Max Moore who finished third in both the board race and board relay at Freshwater.

Add to this Ruby Nolan’s teammates in the winning relays - Amelia Ross, Charlie McKinlley and Sophie Bolton (Cameron) and Charlie McKinlley and Sophie Bolton in the board. In the men’s relay along with Max Moore, Flynn Ross and Hamish Selby made up the winning team. With other members finishing in the top 10 in their events at both beaches, this must rate as one of Sunshine’s best results ever at a major carnival. It’s no wonder that the results have made Coach Clint Robinson very happy with the progress. Not to be outdone by the senior club the Sunshine Beach nippers for the first time ever, last weekend at Dickeys Beach, won the overall points score at a major carnival. All looks well for the state and nationals. Despite being in what amounts to their first season of serious competition Noosas U/19 girls’ boat crew continues to draw attention. For the Australia Day weekend they also travelled to Sydney where they took part in the three carnivals two being at Manly and one at Freshwater. Rowing at Freshie on Thursday the girls finished third overall and backed up at Manly on both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday at the Manly Open Carnival they finished fourth overall and Sunday, again at Manly, they finish in second place in the Australian Short Course Championships. Boat sweep David Tomba said: “We couldn’t be happier. As new girls they are still learning but with their attitude to training and the results they have achieved we feel con-

U13s at Dicky Beach. fident for the season ahead.” It is interesting to note that the girls, Zali Kerr, Tayla Fox, Sinead Hayes and Zoe McKill, are just 16 years of age and as such still have another three years in their division. As we have said many times before, the family structure has now

become the backbone of the modern day surf clubs with not only the sons and daughters joining but the mums and dads as well. So be it in Noosa. For many seasons the Glassock family, consisting of mum and dad Jenny and David plus siblings Harry,

Maggie and Archie, has made outstanding contributions to both the nipper and the senior clubs. All have at various times been patrolling members with some holding the rank of patrol captain. So, to the Glassocks many thanks and our complements for the year.

Mackerel sizes improve with live bait By Jack Mangrove There have been some cracker spanish mackerel coming from Jew Shoal, Halls and Sunshine Reef, and with some near-perfect conditions last week plenty of fish were boated. One of the most successful techniques of late has been live yakkas and slimies on a stinger rig. These can either be floated on a drift or trolled very slowly behind the boat. Spotted mackerel have also been in great numbers with some angler bagging out in record time. Cod, good sized sweetlip and squire have also come from the closer reefs, while those that have made the trip up to north reef have been well rewarded with some outstanding reef fish including trout, sweetlip, hussa, pearl perch cobia, and squire. Again quality baits floated down seem to be the prime enticers. For those like myself that love to fish lures bigger Jerk shad soft plastics and micro jigs have also claimed some great fish. The whiting have been in good numbers in the river. There has been some real elbow slapper amongst them with good fish taken on live worms and live yabbies. The sandbanks near the river mouth have also been the place to

target large flathead on the run out tide. Soft plastics in a prawn profile have tempted some nice sized fish. The hot afternoons have fired up the jacks for the night anglers. Fishing the start of the run out tide has been the most successful with live bait or small fish style soft plastics. Successful locations have been Woods Bays, the back of the Noosa Sound and river mouth rocks. For those bait angler that don’t have live bait, fresh mullet has been the bait of choice as the oily flesh lets off a lot of scent. Quality bream have also been hitting fresh mullet baits around the rocky stretches of river or around structure. Woods Bays has seen quality trevally, queenfish, and tailor hitting surface lures like the 44 and 65mm River2sea Bubble Pops. Mud crabs are making themselves known throughout the system. Get the pots in around the deeper stretches of river that are close to mangroves. Weyba Creek has also been a successful crabbing haunt for quality bucks. Fresh bait like mullet seems to be the main drawcard. With the warm weather, beach anglers have been out in force. Dart, whiting and flathead have been bending rods along Teewah Beach. Up towards Double Island, jew and tailor are coming from the

The closer gutter on the southern beaches are over run with dart, this make for great fun with the kids as they are also certain to pick up a few fish. Smaller bait like prawns, worms and pilchard pieces have been working well. In the fresh water; bass have

been holding hard against the weed and eating grub pattern soft plastics in Lake McDonald. For the fish holding in the deeper part of the dam try tail spinners and blades. Saratoga have been on the prowl in Borumba Dam and feeding on surface lures morning and evening. Fish deeper diving lures as the sun get a little higher. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures!

NOOSA NIPPERS The Sunshine Coast Youth Branch Titles held over the last two weekends was hugely successful for the Noosa Nippers, bringing home a swag of medals and qualifying for many State events. It started last Saturday 21 January under tough conditions at Maroochydore for the beach events. Scorching hot and burning sand in the morning followed by drizzling rain and wind in the afternoon. This weekend was an improvement at Dicky Beach with perfect weather and an extremely well-run two day carnival. Congratulations to all the Noosa Nippers who competed. You have done your club proud. A big thank you to all the volunteers who helped out over the two weekends. Also, a special mention to the Under 14 and Under 15 Noosa competitors who managed to combine two carnivals in one and finish up with some very impressive results. noosatoday.com.au

Asian premiere in Bali Life of

Your columnist getting spruced up for the Wood and Foam Asian premiere at Dorsey's Barber Shop at Deus, Bali. fresh water or trees. Of course, if you’re not part of the solution you’re part of the problem, as they say, and I am certainly one of that generation of surfers who helped popularise what was then little more than a cluster of villages dotted around an endless coastline of perfect reef breaks. Over the years, we’ve contributed in small ways to helping Bali overcome its myriad health, environmental and social problems, but nowhere near enough to create change. In my darker moments up here, I really regret that. And yet part of the ongoing appeal is the hope, faint as it may be now, that Bali will pull back from the precipice. Take the humble plastic bag, for example. There were no plastic bags in

Bali in 1974, yet within a quarter of a century the island’s waterways were choked with them, its atmosphere polluted from plastic fires in every village, every evening. Since schoolgirls Melati and Isabel Wijsen kicked off their Bye Bye Plastic Bags initiative three years ago, the movement has gone viral, with Bali’s Governor Pastika promising a total ban by this time next year. Melati and Isabel and their followers have instigated more than 400 beach clean-ups around the island, they’ve established almost 600 eco pilot programs in villages and they’ve pushed their way into 16 government meetings. And it’s having an effect. Major shops and supermarkets now ask if you want a plastic bag and usually offer an organic alternative. The message hasn’t filtered

down to the small shops and warungs, but it will in time. Reusable water bottles are now widely sold. Bali’s airport went plastic-free last August, and surf shops and schools are setting up their own beach clean-ups - not enough but it’s a start. Being vivacious and energetic teenagers, Melati and Isabel get a lion’s share of the publicity, but the fact is that there are now many people and groups of people becoming proactive about the island’s eco problems. Whether there are enough of them to turn around the “develop or perish” culture in time remains to be seen. In the meantime, I’ll keep coming to Bali because it’s in my blood, and I’ll pick up a few bits of trash after every surf. Futile? Maybe, but I prefer to think not.

Old mates came out of the woodwork - literally in some cases for the Asian premiere of Men of Wood and Foam in Bali last weekend. Literary mates Geoffrey Williams and Michael Freundt came down from their Ubud hideaway, that great old rogue Arthur Karvan made the journey from Sanur, and former Noosan Chris “Cutch” McCutcheon even left his lair for the occasion. Once again Dustin Humphrey and the crew at the Deus Temple of Enthusiasm in Canggu played host in the courtyard for a wonderful night of film and music, with the Band of Frequencies delighting a capacity crowd with their live renditions of the soundtrack songs. I wish we could take the Freqs to California with us next week for a live performance at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, but that pleasure will have to wait for the special screening at the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing on 7 March. It was a big weekend for Freqs Shannon Carroll and OJ Newcomb, teamed up with Bali local Adam Felton on drums and Margaret River’s Leroy on percussion, kicking off with a great set for a packed house at Old Man’s on Friday night, followed by the premiere on Saturday. Sunday was a day to kick back and relax before the band heads into a local recording studio and we fly home. Coming clean Coming to the end of yet another stretch in Bali and beyond, I once again found myself wondering, as I walked along a litter-strewn beach after my morning surf, sharing the greasy brown wet season water with about 50 or 60 Russian learners, just what this apparently endless fascination is all about. It’s been 43 years now, and in that time I’ve watched the “island of the gods” almost drown in its own excesses. Too many people, too many cars, too many McMansions, too much plastic, not enough rice,

NOOSA’S BEST SPORTS COVERAGE

Sunshine Beach Under 13 girls team.

Picture: SURF SHOTS

First place to Sunshine Beach By Dave Gleeson SUNSHINE BEACH NIPPERS Last weekend saw the culmination of the Sunshine Coast competitive lifesaving season for the regions Under 11 - Under 13 Nippers with the twoday Sunshine Coast branch carnival (water events) held at Dicky Beach. This event is not only the ‘Grand Final’ of Sunshine Coast competition but also the pathway to qualify for the Queensland State Titles which are being held in Hervey Bay in midFebruary. Sunshine Beach Nippers have traditionally been strong in these age groups however this year they stepped it up a notch from their usual high standards to dominate the field

across team and individual events. With Sunshine Beach being a small club (total 150 Nippers) coming up against large powerhouse clubs like Maroochydore, Dicky Beach, Alex Heads and Noosa (all with more than 500 Nippers) these results were even more impressive and Sunshine Beach finished the carnival in overall first position on 207 points, ahead of Kawana Waters (173), Maroochydore (168), Alex Headlands (96) and Met Caloundra (83). The small but talented group from Sunshine achieved some remarkable results at this carnival, some which have not been seen before in Sunshine Coast history.

The record breaking achievement was a never before achieved ‘perfect score’ in the U13 Girls Teams Surf race - Sunshine Beach took out the gold medal with the ‘A team’ swimmers finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the final (out of 32 swimmers). From all accounts this has never been achieved by any club in any age group at Sunshine Coast Representative level before. Other results included: U13 Girls - Gold in Cameron relay and Surf team, Silver in the Board Rescue and Board relay, Bronze in Surf team, Gold and Silver in Ironwoman, Gold and Bronze in Swim race, Silver medal in Board race. Under 13 Girls - The girls also had

seven competitors in the top 11 finishers of the ironwoman final, continuing their domination of this age group in the most difficult event. Under 13 Boys - Silver medal in Board Relay and Bronze in Cameron team, Gold in Board race and qualified in surf team for State Title. Under 12 Boys - Silver medal in the Cameron team and Surf team and Bronze in Board Rescue team. Under 12 Boys - The boys won Gold medal in the Ironman and a Silver medal in the boys swim. Under 11 Boys - Gold medals in the Surf Team, Board Relay, Board Rescue, Silver in the Cameron team race and Bronze medal in

Board Relay. Special mention to pocket rocket Brendan Otto winning Gold medals in the Under 11 individual Board, Swim and Ironman races taking out the individual trifecta of gold medals Under 11 Girls - Gold medal in the Cameron team event, Bronze medal in Board rescue and all teams qualifying to State titles. Silver in individual Swim and Bronze in Ironwoman finals. Congratulations to the Sunshine Beach Nippers and all coaching staff for these outstanding results. Sunshine Beach will be sending a youth team of approximately 50 competitors to the Queensland State titles on the weekend of 17-19 February.

Best on the coast soak up the sport By Ron Lane Last Friday evening local government, sporting bodies, athletes and sponsors from all over the coast gathered at the Twin Waters Tourist Resort for the annual Sunshine Coast Sports Federation Dinner and Presentation of Awards. In his words of welcome, master of ceremonies Ben Pike informed guests that that evening the Federation was celebrating its 50 years of service to the sporting community of the Sunshine Coast. During the evening Benny’s outstanding contribution over many years to this organisation, was acknowledged by a well-deserved standing ovation. His loyalty and incredible knowledge of the coast’s sporting history has been a major factor in the success and long life of the Federation. Well done Benny.

For the Noosa Community, representatives from surf lifesaving, amateur boxing and rugby union were in attendance; and it was indeed a successful evening. In the team awards, the Senior Team of the Year was won by the Noosa Dolphins Rugby Union A Grade. Following a season that saw them go undefeated, the award came as no surprise. “We consider this to be an overall club award,“ Club President Donald McKill said. “The support we received from all club people from management through to our supporters has been incredible; so on behalf of the team thank you one and all.“ In the junior division of team awards, this also went to a local club, the Impact Boxing Academy Cooroy.

For these people it certainly rounded off an unbelievable year. With members of his junior boxing squad standing beside him, club President and coach Mark Evans said, “It’s fantastic to receive this award; from all of us - our juniors have performed beyond all expectations and made us very proud.” Both teams extended a big thank you to all their sponsors. It is to be hoped that both Dolphins and Impact continue their success in the coming months. Regarding the boxing club the Commonwealth Games are fast approaching and the possibility of members being chosen to represent their country is indeed a possibility. At the completion of the evening, Dolphins Donald McKill said, “To maintain last season’s high standard will indeed be a

challenge. We hope to maintain a high standard of rugby in Noosa but we know it won’t be easy. Our plans for the forthcoming season are already underway.” With the season in mind, the Dolphins have announced the sign-on dates for the Junior/Senior players as being 17 and 24 February, starting at 3.30pm at their clubhouse. Also their annual Dolphins Long Lunch Sponsorship Event will again be on the supporters’ social calendar. This is now looked on as Noosa’s sporting lunch of the year with guest speakers all of legendary status. With the many teams that contest our summer and winter sports, to have two from our community named as the best, speaks volumes about our people; players, administrators and supporters.

Victory goes to the Masters By Hollie Harris Noosa Masters Swimming Club has once again proven its metal, claiming a fourth straight victory in the National Masters Swimming Endurance 1000 Challenge. This competition, more than any other in Masters swimming, tests the grit and determination of its competitors over the full course of the swimming calendar. Participants can compete in all four major strokes over distances ranging from 400m to the gruelling one-hour challenge, attempting to beat the clock or hit the required distances in time.

It’s an event that requires mental fortitude, physical toughness and a love affair with a never-ending black line. Noosa’s dominance in this event in recent years is a credit to the club and its members. The camaraderie and support offered by the club, as well as an organised plan to work towards endurance targets has led to Noosa’s unprecedented record-breaking four win streak. Endurance swimming is about being at one with the water. It’s about having a plan for each swim and relaxing in the water. Your breathing is your swimming barometer.

If it’s nice and steady and you’re feeling comfortable, then your swimming well. It’s largely about pitting your mental strength against the physical requirements required. Stroking into second place this year was Talays Swim Club in Tasmania, with a club from NSW, Campbelltown, touching in third. Both however were left in their wake. Twenty-three outstanding athletes from their ranks also managed a topten national individual finish in their respective age-groups. Let’s dive for five in 2017!

With extra funds now available in Round 9, we will be able to help as many as 5000 more children to get involved in their favourite sport or recreation activity.” Mr Pitt said the Get Started vouchers program helped Queensland children whose

families may not otherwise be able to afford the cost of joining a sport or recreational club. “The vouchers provide up to $150 to help eligible children cover the cost of membership or participation fees at a local club,” he said. “They are issued on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, so you will need to be quick when applications for extra vouchers open on Thursday. “Overall more than 150,000 vouchers have been issued to Queensland families since the very first round of the program.” For more information on how to apply for Get Started Vouchers, visit www.npsr.qld. gov.au/getinthegame

It’s great news for Noosa kids wanting to play sport this season, with the government announcing the extension of the kick-start voucher program. Treasurer and Minister for Sport Curtis Pitt has made an extra $750,000 available to help up to 5000 Queensland children kick-start their involvement in organised sport or recreational activities through Round 9 of the popular Get Started vouchers program. Mr Pitt said high demand for the $150 vouchers in the current Round 9 of the Get Started program had led him to boost funding. “The vouchers flew out the door last week when the current round of online applications opened, exhaust-
