Two companies vying for a $5 billion defence contract are willing to work in Geelong but the Andrews Government wants them in Melbourne instead, they have told the Indy. Their interest in Geelong contrasts a statement from Victorian Industry Minister Wade Noonan that a disused Holden site at Fisherman’s Bend was the company’s “preferred Victorian location” if they won the Land 400 contract. Rheinmetall Defence Australia boss Andrew Fletcher said his company had no site preference but Geelong had been “an important

Mall brawlers greet new strategy on youth crime him as he lay on the ground. Onlookers broke up the fight before the man walked away to apparently punch the face of a girl in school uniform at the end of the video. Police witnessed the altercation on surveillance cameras, said Geelong Inspector Graham Banks. “By the time police attended the youth involved had fled the scene.” The man appeared to be on drugs and was unwilling to speak to police, Insp Banks said. “He was not co-operating with police but he appears to have been the victim of the assault.” Police urged witnesses to phone Geelong Police Station on 5225 3100 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. A city centre worker said violent incidents in the mall were now so frequent they were “just normal”.

By Luke Voogt Another vicious brawl in Geelong’s Lt Malop Street mall shocked witnesses on Wednesday night before the State Government launched a new strategy on youth crime. Mobile phone footage showed a teenage boy yelling at a man: “Throw a swing at me, I’m being held back, let’s go”. The youth continued screaming at the man as other teenagers appeared to physically and verbally harass him. Then man walked away before a woman yelling followed and apparently hit him before he fell backward. The man then walked after the woman before a teenage boy appeared to hit him in the back of the head from behind. A pack of teenage boys and girls then assaulted

“Last night it was just a little bit worse than usual,” said the woman, who asked for anonymity to protect her employer’s store. “I wanted to go outside and yell at the little s..ts myself. The little cowards don’t scare me but they’d probably come back and trash the shop.” Youth crime in the mall continued impacting traders, she said. “I know people who won’t come into town because of it.” The following day Police Minister Lisa Neville announced $700,000 to help tackle youth crime in Geelong. The money would support joint court, youth agency and police interventions, Ms Neville said. “We are working with local Geelong leaders and experts to intervene early to break the cycle of crime and build a safer community.”

In Brief Yards reopen Geelong Saleyards will reopen on Monday for sheep sales as council administrators continue working on a strategy for the facility’s long-term future, City Hall has announced. The council closed the historic yards last year amid safety concerns and mounting maintenance bills before a public outcry prompted the administrators’ short-term fix to partially reopen the facility.

Ambos faster Ambulance response times to code-one emergencies in Geelong have improved by 30 seconds, according to new data. The improvement between the December quarters of 2015 and 2016 came amid health system demand “never experienced” before, said Geelong MP Christine Couzens (pictured).

Land ‘surrender’ Alcoa’s “early surrender” of its Anglesea Health lease has added more than 6510 hectares to Great Otway National Park, the State Government has announced. The land, bordering Alcoa’s former coal mine and power station, was an “incredibly important addition” to the park for its native flora and fauna, said Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio.

Dog app A new app available online lists 100 Geelong-district parks and tracks for walking dogs. Park Your Pet provided “more information than ever before on our best dog-friendly open spaces”, said Geelong council administrators chair Kathy Alexander.

ATTENTION TO RETAIL: The cast of Rostered On.

Shopping show’s ‘retail therapy’ rostered for release Ryan described Dan as a genuine, trustworthy and loyal problem solver. “Every time you needed something done Dan would be the guy who got it done for you.” Ryan said Dan’s name would appear before credits in the first episode, which he hoped to release next month. The series follows the hilarious struggles of Shaun (Paul Moore) and fellow retail staff as they endure rude customers and condescending management. The volunteer cast and crew took nine days to film it, with 6am starts and one 18-hour day of filming ending at midnight.

By Luke Voogt Geelong comedy Rostered On will debut its web series early this year following its internationally popular pilot - with a special tribute for a fallen friend. Rostered On writer-director Ryan Chamley said he would dedicate the series to assistant director and friend of 20 years Daniel Boyles. ‘Dan’ helped build the set and auditioned more than 200 actors. He died in an accident at his property before the last day of filming. “The whole series wouldn’t have happened without him,” Ryan said.

“There haven’t been any egos or complaining about late nights,” Ryan said. “They were all in it to create something they could be proud of.” Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre donated a vacant store while OMA Shopfitting provided shelving. The crew went “far beyond” their job scrounging second hand televisions and old appliances. “People were walking in asking when we were opening,” Ryan said. “If we had a licence we could have run a store!” Ryan promised “higher production values” than the pilot, which has received 185,955 YouTube views so far.

A Great Ocean Road summit will discuss “the lack of toilet facilities” as a “very major issue”, federal MP Sarah Henderson has announced. Next month’s event in Lorne would also address other “basic infrastructure” shortages along the iconic tourism route, including car parks, picnic tables and pedestrian crossings, she said.

More mould Mould concerns have forced the closure of another public hall, according to Geelong’s council. City Hall temporarily closed Ceres Temperance Hall to remove mould from a dressing room after recently initiating similar work at Barwon Heads’ Senior Citizens Centre amid fears for users’ health.

Comfort food might not be so comforting after all, according to new Geelong research. The world-first study found that loading diets with nutritious foods at the expense of junk like sweets and processed products could treat “major depression”, announced

Professor Felice Jacka (pictured), from Deakin University’s Barwon Health campus. And the great the difference between gobbling up the good and bad, the greater the benefit, Prof Jacka said. The link between diet and depression was “known for some time”, she pointed out, but the Geelong results were the first time it had been tested in a proper trial. The gloves were off late last week in a very public social media brawl between a pair of political figures in one corner and a couple of local journos in the other. Former mayor Darryn Lyons started the bout, body-slamming an opinion piece accusing him and MP Sarah Henderson of raising false hopes on defence-contract jobs. “Horrendous reporting … absolute crap,” Lyons attacked on Twitter. The opinionista hit back, goading Lyons to share his “#alternative facts”.

The two traded smack-downs before a tagteam format emerged, Henderson jumping into the ring with Tweets about the column’s own “badly wrong” facts and limited understanding. Then the second journo leapt off the ropes onto Hendo with Tweets questioning her role in Falsehopegate. On it went, back and forth, digital chairs crashing over virtual backs, including an obscurely motivated self-help suggestion from Lyons about the healing power of crying. An unseemly exchange between local pollies and pundits? Certainly. But entertaining? Definitely! Somewhat greater civility was demonstrated on Monday morning in a small, gentle swell at Bells Beach. There she was, a young backpacker, possibly European, struggling to catch a wave on a beginner’s board as her boyfriend and others of more experience hogged every ripple. An hour passed, maybe more. Still no ride for our forlorn fraulein, reduced to passive onlooker as the boys had all the fun. But her plight didn’t go unnoticed by one senior face in the crowd. He paddled over, quietly offered advice, then gently helped the girl into a smooth little peeler that carried her unsteady but upright toward shore. What a ride. It was probably our novice’s only wave but what a story to tell on her homecoming: how I caught a monster at Bells! But the real hero remains the grey-headed bloke who came thoughtfully to her aid, setting a fine, if sadly rare, example in the process. Hat’s off to you, sir.

By Luke Voogt The results of 12 months of investigations have justified the sacking of Geelong’s council last year, according to the State Government. Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins backed the findings, which last week’s Indy revealed as “four incidents of substantiated bullying and harassment” dating back “at least a decade”. The government sacked the council in April, citing bullying complaints. This week Ms Hutchins declined to say whether the investigations had substantiated any claims against former councillors. The government was committed to the investigation, Ms Hutchins said. “The people of Geelong deserve a first-class council that puts their needs first.” Ms Hutchins also brushed off comments from Melbourne HR specialist David Simpson in last week’s Indy that the number of substantiated incidents at City Hall was “not high” for councils given the timeframe. “The government is not aware of another council in Victoria currently facing the issues Geelong faced,” Ms Hutchins said. “But if we were we would make appropriate enquiries into the matter.” Shadow local government minister David Davis said any bullying incidents at City Hall went back further than the sacked council. “Long-term cultural problems at Geelong were overlooked for years in an effort to protect Labor councillors”. Mr Davis said the Andrews Government “selectively focused” on Liberal-aligned Mr Lyons because of his “political stripe”. “Things at Geelong council were far from perfect but it appears Labor sought to use this politically.” Mr Davis rejected Mr Lyons’ accusation that the State Opposition “lacked the backbone” to properly scrutinise the council’s sacking. Mr Davis declined to say whether the investigation results so far justified the sacking. But the sacking “may well have not been required” if previous state governments had addressed council’s “cultural problems” earlier, he said.

PUB TALK: Rod Macdonald.

VINDICATED: Kylie Fisher.

Numbers prove ‘political’ motivation By Luke Voogt The results of bullying investigations at City Hall last year prove the sacking of Geelong’s council was “political“, according to a former councillor. Kylie Fisher said the State Government used bullying allegations to target potential future Liberal candidates, such as former mayor Darryn Lyons. “Now they’ll be discredited forever and known as the councillors who got the sack, along with myself,” said the former Corio Ward councillor. “You shouldn’t have any (bullying) but four over 20 years is not a sackable offence. “I’ve never been accused of bullying and I’ve never interviewed for it. I’ve always wanted to clear my name but there’s no for process for doing that.” Ms Fisher was responding to last week’s Indy report that 12 months of state-ordered investigations

had “substantiated“ four bullying incidents and “several” bullies at City Hall “over at least a decade”. Mr Lyons last week blasted the results, saying they demonstrated that the Government’s justification for the sacking was “absolute b......t”. Former Cheetham Ward councillor Rod Macdonald said the investigations were based on a workplace culture report “full of sweeping statements” and “very little supporting evidence”. “I read the report from cover to cover and it was all pub talk,” said Mr Macdonald, a Labor party member. “Never ask for a report unless you know how it’s going to turn out.” Former Windermere Ward councillor Mr Ansett said the truth behind council’s sacking took a “long time to come out”. “But the community’s not silly, they can see right through it.”

Build plan foiled From page 1 “Geelong offers a capability, depth and expertise across a range of companies that many regions in Australia find hard to match,” he told the Indy yesterday. Mr Fletcher met numerous companies in Geelong during Land 400 road shows in 2015 and 2016, he said. “We look forward to working with Geelong companies to deliver the Land 400 Phase 2 program should we be successful.” BAE’s Brian Gathright said the Geelong’s disused Ford Factory was still an option for the Land 400 project to build army combat vehicles. “We’ve toured the site previously ... it certainly has the space necessary for production.” “We have not identified a preferred site. We are still exploring multiple sites within Victoria as well multiple sites throughout the country.” Mr Gathright said Geelong could score supply-chain jobs regardless of where the company locates manufacturing, if it wins the bid. “We’ve been working with Geelong-based companies and Australian companies for 60 years - we could be based on the moon and still use solutions based in Geelong.” Victoria faces competition for Land 400 from South Australia, which has put enticements worth $100 million behind its bid. The Victorian Government has yet to confirm any funding to help win the contract.

Win tops his day A Torquay man will have a sharp eye on the housing market after winning more than half a million dollars over the weekend. The overjoyed man said he was having a great Monday morning, which prompted him to check his ticket at the newsagent. “Ah beauty!” the man exclaimed when TattsLotto confirmed his $509,614.77 division one windfall. “A few things went well for me this morning so I thought I better go check my TattsLotto. This has topped it all off for sure!” 12338223-HM05-17

Sanctuary of Joy Joy Thorup’s love of wildlife began as a Prep student visiting Serendip Sanctuary for the first time. Now the 18-year-old is helping youngsters share her passion through the sanctuary’s school programs. “What I love about Serendip is that I discover something new every time I’m there,” Joy said. “I couldn’t wait to do the Junior Ranger programs during the holidays. Mum took me to my first one when I was 11; now I’m helping run them.” Every year, classes from Lara Primary School spend a week at the nearby Serendip Sanctuary as part of a Parks Victoria program. Joy started volunteering at Serendip Sanctuary at the age of 16. She went from helping with the sancutary’s Junior Ranger programs to running its “Behind the Scenes” tours. These involve taking groups around to see and feed the resident animals. “There was so much to know about the different creatures,” Joy said.

“It took me a while to get a hang of things at first, but Matt Wills and the staff there really looked after me.” This summer Joy worked as a seasonal ranger for a few days. “It felt great to be called Ranger Joy,” she said. “I’m definitely going to apply for a seasonal ranger role next year.” “When the real rangers go off to fight fires, you hold down the fort.” Joy recently won a Kookaburra Award from Parks Victoria for her volunteering. Parks Victoria Ranger Vanessa Wiggenraad says Joy’s award was well-deserved. “Joy is a great example of someone who really engages with nature and gets so much enjoyment from that in return,” Ms. Wiggenraad said. “Our partnership with Lara Primary is one that offers that special experience to young children, and it’s so rewarding to see how it helps them develop love and respect for nature and its creatures.”

Aprons creased but not worn out By Luke Voogt Ruth Christian has risen early nearly every Wednesday for the past 26 years to don her apron and feed Geelong’s homeless and disadvantaged. “When the apron wears out, I’ll stop,” the 75-year-old told the Indy this week. “It’s got a couple of creases but it’s probably got less signs of wear than I have.” Ruth helped serve the first dinner at Christ Church when it began its community meals program in 1991 “to connect with the community”. “We were pretty good at food, so we figured that was what we were called to do. “The thing we have at Christ Church is location - people can get to it from all over Geelong.” Ruth has volunteered at breakfast since - apart from a break between 2004 and 2006 at the end of her 43-year teaching career. “We never thought it would still be going all these years later,” she said. “We didn’t know how great a need it was going to fill, but we discovered quite quickly.” Ruth insists the meals are “not just about the food” for the homeless but giving them someone to talk to. “It was those human interactions that made it important to me and still make it important to me.” But after years of serving breakfast, Ruth still doesn’t like getting up on a Wednesday. “By the time we get there I’m quite sunny and cheerful, but I’m not necessarily when I get out of bed.” “No” agreed her husband Laurie, who drives her to church and has himself supported the program for 15 years. Ruth said “countless” people, whose lives had improved after the attending the meals, were keen to give back. “They’ve got themselves to a situation where they can focus on other people, not just themselves.” Ruth remembers some frightening moments

DEDICATION: Jan McGowan and Ruth Christian at Christ Church's daily breakfast. Between them they have volunteered for more than 40 years serving meals for the homeless and disadvantaged. 164430 like when a man “in a bad way” became aggressive after she called him an ambulance. But the next week the man thanked her “for saving his life”. “I do it because I know it makes a difference.” Ruth said the local school and groups supporting the program were “too many to name”. “We would be nowhere without the help we get

from the community.” Program co-ordinator Jan McGowan volunteers like Ruth were “why people were willing support it”. “She’s the last (original) ones left standing,” she said. “A lot of the other people have gotten too old it’s grown and there’s more work to do.”

The church serves at least 100 meals every Monday and Wednesday, up from 80 a few years ago, and breakfast every day - even Christmas and Good Friday. Jan said the group was managing the workload but: “It’s lovely when younger people say they want to do it because we’re not going to last forever.”

Torched cars ‘putting lives at risk’ By Luke Voogt Thieves torching stolen cars on the outskirts of Geelong are putting lives, livestock and property at risk according to local firefighters. A car fire on Peak School Road spread to nearby grass before Little River firefighters arrived to extinguish the flames, just before midnight Sunday. Lara fire brigade first lieutenant David Love said it was lucky the flames had not spread further. “If there had been any wind last night it had the potential to do a lot of damage,” he said. “It’s extremely disappointing with all the fire prevention that’s been happening.” Mr Love said crews from Lara and Little River brigades had extinguished at least a dozen car fires over recent months. “Our biggest concern is the amount of stolen cars that have been burnt.”

Mr Love said that a grass fire started by a torched car could have “severe“ consequences, especially with dry grass and the population growth of Little River and Lara. The Lara brigade posted a photo of the fire’s aftermath on its Facebook page Monday. The photo shows a scorched trail leading to the car on the road. “This car was burnt using liquid fuels such as petrol,” the post read. “We are once again lucky that it did to take hold and if not for the good work of Little River brigade we would have been chasing a fire across some very ready-to-burn grass land.” The early-model Holden Commodore sedan was missing its motor and front end. Police said the car was most-likely stolen and urged witnesses to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Relatively warmer-than-average nights and days characterised Geelong temperatures during January. Maximums averaged 25.8C compared to the 30year mean of 25.1C. Daily minimums averaged 14.6C compared to the 30-year figure of 13.6C. The temperatures translated to a January warmer than average although only six days were over 30C, which is normal for the month. The month’s top temperature hit 37.6C on 7 January. The coldest night was down to 9.4C on 25 January. The coolest day was 3 January which recorded a maximum of 20.6C while the warmest night reached 25C on 8 January. No temperature records for the month were broken. However, the monthly rain figure was average to below average. Only 34mm was recorded at Geelong’s official weather station in Breakwater compared to the 30year average of 39.4mm. The official Bureau of Lindsay Smail. Meteorology for Geelong will show only 28mm because of a malfunction in the bureau’s equipment on 13 and 14 January. The malfunction was fixed, but the recorded rain on those days - about 6mm - was left on zero due to some official refusal to alter the faulty figures. The central and eastern Otways catchment areas recorded above average rain but areas closer to Geelong, the Moorabool catchment and the Bellarine Peninsula were mostly drier than average for January. Rain was recorded on only six days for the month, including a relatively heavy 26.6mm during the 24 hours to 9am on 20 January. The rain result left the region’s water catchments at 73.9 per cent of capacity by the end of the month, a relatively healthy figure for this time of year. · Lindsay Smail operates Geelong Weather Services

Letters 60% of jury had spoken As one of the members of Geelong Citizens’ Jury, I take issue with one of the points raised by Simon Ramsey MP (Letters, 27 January). On the final day 41 jury members were present, not 31. However, because of the unexpected extra day some people had indicated they would be unable to attend, so a buddy system was set up so views of those absent could be passed on. Additionally, an online portal allowed absent members to pass on their final recommendations. Therefore, the final aspirational recommendations were presented by at least 60 per cent of the group. It should also be noted that the ideals for our future-council discussed, written, refined and voted on in our first two meetings were indeed the views of the whole group. The final day was for writing our ideals and putting them into a document. Throughout the whole process our motivation was to give Geelong the best chance for a council that will be democratic, transparent, accountable, inclusive and engaged to work for the betterment of Geelong. Mary Budd Lara

Absolutely bullied Former mayor Darryn Lyons’ statement on the front page of last week’s Geelong Indy that the council bully probe was “absolute b……t”, showed he has a lot in common with Donald Trump regarding the truth. I made a written report to the commissioner of bullying by another councillor, which resulted in an interview. Mr Lyons was also quoted as saying: “People (councillors) raised their voices behind closed doors but at the end of the day that’s passion about their beliefs and what is right for the city.” That sounds like, according to Mr Lyons, it’s all right to yell at people as long as it’s indoors.

to state schools. The Andrews Government is trialling in 100 Victorian schools allowances for doctors to prescribe the contraceptive pill to children as young as 12. This diversity from traditional Biblical morality will surely bring opposition to any common acceptance of moral values. A proverb states: “The wringing of the nose brings forth blood”. Forceful demands will generate a corresponding response. The response of responsible parents should be to withdraw their children from schools running any of these programs. Buckets & Bouquets Bouquets to an observant, honest person who retrieved my money from a MYKI machine at South Geelong Railway Station. Bouquets also to the station staff. Infrequent Traveller, Geelong Bouquets to a kind, unknown person who paid our parking fee on a hot day near Geelong Private Hospital. The nearest meter was not working and I was unable to walk to another. Upon returning I was surprised to find a paid ticket. The kindness was much appreciated. Grateful Oldie, Grovedale

I disagree with Mr Lyons that bullying did not involve councillors. Bob Thompson Ocean Grove

Labor sends jobs around Bend In contrast to local Labor MPs who have sat on their hands, I have been proud to fight for the $5 billion Land 400 defence contract for our region (Geelong Indy, 27 January). It is a disgrace the Andrews Labor Government has chosen to base the project at Fisherman’s Bend in central Melbourne should Victoria win the contract. This is a terrible betrayal of the people of Geelong and its manufacturing jobs. Industry Minister Wade Noonan tried blaming defence companies Rheinmetall and BAE for the decision, claiming that Fisherman’s Bend was their chosen location in Victoria. However, senior executives from both companies have confirmed this was solely a State Government decision. The two defence primes have not selected a preferred location in Victoria - or anywhere else

Conscription prescription

- at this stage. Not only has state Labor betrayed Geelong workers, it has also improperly blamed the defence companies for Labor’s secret state plan. If local Labor MPs had taken the same approach as local Liberals and community leaders and lobbied the Premier to ensure Victoria’s Land 400 bid included Geelong - we could have had a very different outcome. Sarah Henderson MP Member for Corangamite

Meet 'diversity’ with force of values I am amazed Deakin University’s vice-chancellor was recently quoted as saying that “difference and diversity are what unites our community”. Jane den Hollander gave this oxymoronic belief as a reason for her participation in the Midsumma Pride March. I consider the purpose of the march is not to persuade but to demand acceptance from those who oppose the LGBTI agenda being imposed on society. The demand is coming through the program for same-sex marriage and the over-sexualised Safe Schools program being introduced

Why would paid compulsory 18-month conscription for 20-year-olds of both genders be such a bad idea? Given a rapidly changing geopolitical dynamic to our north, the fluidity of US President Donald Trump and a spike in teen-plus lawlessness, the case for a reinstatement of conscription is further strengthened. While approximately 64 countries maintain a conscription adherence and 88 don’t, the institution served us exceedingly well on four previous occasions. Despite a 45-year hiatus, conscription would provide not only a potential security benefit but an accompanying boost to the economy via government spending and also offer ongoing armed forces careers and trades to young people, many of whom are currently facing bleak full-time employment opportunities. Added to the mainstream model as a parallel variance, extended periods of non-paying, toughlove conscription would draw the line for repeat young offenders as this cohort continues to otherwise cause the tail to wag the dog, being treated so leniently by a judiciary and allied services that don’t reflect community expectations. If you live in a suburb near grasslands, you’re at risk of ire. If you live directly next to parks or paddocks and a grassire starts, walk at least two streets back. If you live two or more streets away, stay where you are, ire is unlikely to spread into built up areas. Stay alert and monitor conditions. Don’t drive, visibility may be poor, accidents are likely, and you could block emergency services.

All things horses It was Harriet Moxham’s passion for the racing industry that prompted her to enrol in the Equine Management program at Marcus Oldham. Four years in the industry, and Harriet knew she was committed, but needed further skills and a better understanding of the business. “I come from an equestrian background, and I went to Marcus Oldham because I wanted to learn more about the thoroughbred industry,” the 26-year-old from Binnaway in central western NSW said. “It seemed like the fastest way to get a broad overview of the racing industry and focus on it as a career path.” The popular one-year Diploma of Equine Management equips graduates with the skills, training and horse husbandry knowledge needed to excel in equestrian, racing and breeding. Delivered on campus at Waurn Ponds, this established course covers business management, equine science, young horse education and training, yearling preparation, breeding practices and nutrition. In addition, there are study tours and work experience opportunities with prominent horse establishments throughout Australia and New Zealand. “Our equine program is recognised by the industry as one of the best,” Marcus Oldham principal, Dr Simon Livingstone said. “Lecture room tuition is balanced with local, interstate and international study tours which expose students to the many facets of the equestrian and racing businesses. “Through these tours, students build a valuable network of industry contacts which prepares them well for their career progression.” Harriet also highlighted the importance of the tours. “I found the tours motivating and inspiring because we were witnessing all the valuable lessons

Harriet Moxham has had a wide exposure in all things equine. 164437 we learnt from the classroom being implemented to make successful and viable equine businesses.“ While at Marcus, Harriet was awarded the Marcus Oldham International Stud Management Award to work at the historic Lanwades Stud at Newmarket in Cambridgeshire, England, and the Staffordstown Stud in County Meath Ireland for 12 months. “I think the Lanwades scholarship is an excellent opportunity for someone after the amazing year they’ve had at Marcus. To go overseas and work on a unique stud like Lanwades, it really broadened my horizons and was such an eye opener as to the full scope of the racing industry. Harriet is currently working on her family farm in NSW, but hopes to use her Marcus Oldham Diploma of Equine Management to work for a country race club selling “the racing dream”. FINALLY FRIDAY

Bee Gees tribute show By Luke Voogt After a decade of paying homage to the legends of disco, the UK Bee Geez will head to Geelong RSL next Saturday night. The band started in Blackpool - England’s “Vegas of the North” - after its members met playing for different tribute acts. “We were playing on the circuit in Blackpool,” said Scotsman David Gray, the group’s “Barry Gibb”. “We were all big Bee Gees fans, and just got chatting and had a little jam. We realised all our harmonies were going to waste. “So we just decided to give it a try and we got some good reviews, so we just went with it.” The 43-year-old migrated to Australia with his family six years ago and the other members followed “one by one”. “I came over first and I saw there was a lack of Bee Gees tributes,” he said. “This country is fantastic; you can survive in the music industry full time. There’s a lot of places you can’t do that.” The Gold Coast-based band just returned from a tour of India. They have toured the world and performed alongside The Village People and The Supremes. “We’re based here but we take it all around the world,” Gray said. “We do theatres, cruise ships, all sorts of things.” Gray met Barry Gibb, the last surviving of the three brothers, in their Australian hometown of Redcliffe. As for the high-pitched vocals, Gray said they come naturally to him. “I’ve never had any training it’s just something I’ve been able to do,” he said. “I guess I was born to do this job. You have to stay away from smoking and alcohol though.”

Geelong will host Anzac spirit expo The Spirit of Anzac Centenary Experience - the largest travelling Australian exhibition in nearly three decades - will come to Geelong this month. The free exhibition features 200 artefacts from the last century from the Australian War Museum, like medical gear, pilots’ helmets and a piece of the “Red Barons” plane. Manfred von Richthofen became known as the Red Baron due to his habit of painting his planes red. He killed eighty allied airmen until an Australian gunner shot him down on 21 April 1918. The exhibition follows the footsteps of Australian soldiers, sailors, airmen and nurses during World War I, commemorating the 2015 Centenary of Anzac. More than 250,000 people have visited the government-funded exhibition so far, according to promoters. The number includes 37,896 school children learning the history of those who served their country. Spirit of Anzac Centenary Experience opens Geelong Arena from 21 February and runs until 27 February. While the exhibition is free, visitors will need to register for tickets on http://www.spiritofanzac. gov.au or by phoning 1300 462 313.

SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER: Tribute act the UK Bee Geez hit Geelong RSL next weekend The show will be Gray’s first time in Geelong as a “Bee Gee” but he has been to the city with his other tribute act: The Best of Eagles. The group will play hits including “Staying Alive“, “You Should Be Dancing“ and “How

Deep Is Your Love” in their 11 February performance. “It’s like a trip down memory lane,” Gray said. “The crowds that come to see us, they want to sing along to the songs they know.”

IN THEIR FOOTSTEPS: A travel exhibition which explores the lives of the ANZACs will visit Geelong this month

FINALLY FRIDAY

‘Real’ Affliction enters the Arena Australia’s hottest metalcore band, The Amity Affliction, will hit Geelong Friday in a packed oneoff gig at the Arena. The Affliction will return to the city after scoring three entries to this year’s Triple J Hottest 100 with its latest album This Could Be Heartbreak. It’s the band’s fifth year running in the national countdown, which celebrates the best alternative music in Australia and the world. Vocalist Joel Birch described the band’s latest album as the “darkest” yet, featuring the “brutally honest lyrics” of a man desperately consumed by alcoholism and depression. “I’ve always thought there’s no point doing music if it’s not either saying something that’s going to help people or going to be a really personal, cathartic experience,” Birch said. It’s the band’s fifth album and its third to debut at number one on the Australian charts. Birch’s contributions provide the “beating heart”, promoters said. Most fans would be aware of his struggles with alcohol and depression during previous albums. “I’m not mincing my words ... I’m telling you what I’m feeling, what I’m going through,” he said. Birch started attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings following completion of This Could Be Heartbreak. With his wife and band mates’ support he began rebuilding, and his newborn has son given him a new perspective on life. “I’ve never been one to look far ahead, just because I didn’t think I’d be alive,” he said, “I’m learning how to appreciate what I’ve got, which I wasn’t before.” “I think it’s good for people to realise that someone they look up to is going through the same s..t they are. None of us are alone in this.” Bass guitarist and fellow vocalist Ahren Stringer said the band wanted to make this album the best yet.

What’sat on

BRUTALLY HONEST: The Amity Affliction will play in Geelong Friday. “You’ll be hearing a real rollercoaster of emotion and a true reflection of everything we’ve been trying to do throughout our career.“ The band’s line up has changed since their 2003 formation in Gympie, Queensland, but their ability send mosh pits crazy with metallic, no-

holds-barred confessionals hasn’t. New lead guitarist Dan Brown joined Stringer to pen the latest album, which debuted at number one on the ARIA Charts in mid-2016. “We added another piece of the puzzle when we got Dan on board in 2013, and the proof is in

the punch in that he joined and then we wrote our best album yet,” Stringer said. Floor sales are sold out for the Geelong Arena gig, with a small number of 18 plus seating tickets remaining.

It’s the value for money that keeps diners returning to Oppy’s Bistro at the Norlane Hotel. The bistro’s fantastic “all-day” menu from midday to 5pm offers tummy-filling goodies starting at just $11, making Oppy’s a great spot for a quick and hearty lunch. Add fast and friendly service and pleasant surroundings and it’s no wonder Oppy’s Bistro has a stream of regulars enjoying the venue. But the value doesn’t end there. Public bar meals are available for lunch and dinner from $8 to $14.50, plus blackboard specials with a variety of meals are served Thursday to Sunday nights. The Oppy’s Bistro classic menu offers a great range of casual and seasonal dishes for both lunch and dinner, including steaks, seafood, pastas, risottos and stir fries.

A lovely display of sweets is in the dessert case for patrons who still have a bit of room left. Plenty of good-value meal-deals include seniors two-course meals from just $16.90 for lunch. Oppy’s Bistro features speciality nights with pasta from $10 on Mondays, schnitzels from $12 and parmis from $14 on Tuesdays, and steak from $14 on Wednesdays. An extensive children’s menu and playroom facilities for all ages help make Oppy’s Bistro a family affair. Special occasions catering can be arranged. Norlane Hotel is renowned for its homage to Sir Hubert ‘Oppy’ Opperman, one of Australia’s sport heroes in cycling during the early part of last century.

Many people choose dental implants to replace missing teeth.

Dental match-up single tooth or several teeth, or to support a full set of dentures. Implants are posts that are surgically placed into the upper or lower jawbone and replace the root of one or more missing teeth. This may be a good option for those who are in good general health and whose jaw can support an implant. Book an appointment at Norlane Dental Surgery to discuss options by calling 1800 246 247 or for more information visit www.NorlaneDental.com.au.

With the new year here it’s the perfect time for everyone to ensure that they are in good shape to tackle the year ahead. Feet, ankles and knees are relied upon for our daily mobility, yet they’re often the cause of pain, discomfort and neglect. Foot and Leg Pain Clinics experts have some tips to help keep 2017 pain free. 1. Always get foot and leg pain checked. Simple soreness can be a symptom of more serious underlying issues and a podiatrist who specialises in musculoskeletal issues has the most appropriate and specific medical expertise to treat such issues. 2. Evaluate your footwear. Summer footwear such as thongs and slips-ons can be stressful to the feet and ankles if worn for too long. Choose shoes that are comfortable with straps or laces (that hold to the feet), and have decent cushioning and support, whenever possible, especially for prolonged activity. 3. Choose activity/sport appropriate shoes for sport and recreational activities. 4. Don’t rely on technological advances in footwear to treat pain and discomfort or decrease the risk of injury. Proper advice and treatment from an experienced musculoskeletal podiatrist is the best way to prevent and treat problems. 5. Don’t buy shoes that require a “break-in period”. Shoes should be comfortable immediately. 6. Shop for footwear at the end of the day to accommodate for normal swelling. Feet can swell by up to 10 per cent during the course of a day. 7. Be careful of off-the-shelf foot products including mass produced orthotics, innersoles and

Who’d like to save $100k? Looking to downsize? An innovative finance solution could save you up to $100,000, says Pelican Shores Manager Sue Swingler. The main reason homes are more affordable in lifestyle villages, such as Pelican Shores, is that ownership of the land and home are separate, Sue says. “Although you will own your home, you rent rather than buy the land. Also, there is no stamp duty, expensive legal fees or ongoing council rates to pay and pensioners are eligible for governmentfunded rent assistance. “If you are still concerned about having sufficient funds to enjoy a comfortable retirement and to tick off some of the things on your ‘bucket list’

you can take advantage of Pelican Shores’ unique shared equity facility.” Rather than paying the full price on settlement, you need only pay 65 per cent - 99.99 per cent of the purchase price in return for the same percentage ownership, she explains. “Using shared equity enables you to secure your home, and the lifestyle you have been dreaming about, without having to break the bank. “It also frees up capital that would otherwise be tied up in your home, allowing you to spend it or invest it as you choose.” Although ownership of the home is shared between you and Pelican Shores, naturally you have

exclusive use of the home and the right to sell your home when you wish. Pelican Shores residents Norma and John bought their home using shared equity and said: “Pelican Shores Estate not only allowed us to free up extra cash but it is just such a beautiful place to live. Leaving for holidays is a breeze because there is nothing to worry about, knowing your home is safe.” “We have stunning views and can walk our dogs in some of Victoria’s best surrounding countryside. The staff are friendly and helpful - just a great place to call home. Pelican Shores, 300 Clifton avenue, Leopold.

An innovative financing arrangement from Pelican Shores allows people to move in to a home without the full cost that comes with other options.

Save for the end Since 1 January 2017, new rules apply for the Centrelink Age Pension Assets test. One strategy to reduce your assets is to invest in a funeral bond or a fixed price funeral plan, which can both be organised by Kings Funerals with all funds invested with a friendly society. Currently, you can invest up to $12,500 in a funeral bond and this investment is not deemed to be part of your assets. With a fixed price funeral plan, there is no limit on the amount you can invest. This ability to reduce your assets by investing in a funeral bond or a fixed price funeral plan is a benefit that is not available with funeral insurance products. Call Julie Spriggs, pre-planning consultant at Kings Funerals on 5248 3444 to discuss our funeral planning options.

Julie Spriggs, at Kings Funerals, can assist with your funeral planning options.

SENIORS Even people in their later years can get compensation Elderly clients often ask Henry Carus & Associates’ lawyers whether it’s worthwhile seeking compensation for injuries sustained in fall accidents in a public spaces. “We often say, ‘Yes, because we consider ourselves experts in this area of the law,” says a spokesperson for the firm. The spokesperson highlighted the experience of 90-year-old Anthony Roy Scott, who was awarded $230,000 compensation for a serious hip injury from falling into a trench as he went to retrieve a chair under repair at the defendant’s property. The Victorian Supreme Court accepted Mr Scott’s evidence that he was watching where he was going and was in no way responsible

for his fall. “When it involves an older person, the compensation given to Mr Scott is a reminder that age should not deter anyone from seeking the fair compensation they deserve,” the Henry Carus spokesperson said. “Of greater importance, Mr Scott’s claim demonstrates the compensation available can be generous.” Henry Carus & Associates can put forward a claim for anyone injured, based on the expertise that flows from more than 30 years’ experience with personal injury claims. Henry Carus has past experience as a New York trial lawyer in personal injury litigation and more than 20 years’ in Melbourne acting for and

against insurance companies in personal injury claims. He also has comprehensive understanding of how insurance companies operate after working as a senior insurance lawyer and a partner in an insurance firm acting for commercial insurers and government agencies. “Henry Carus & Associates also has more than 13 years of using that experience to achieve excellent outcomes for injured persons,” the firm’s spokesperson said. “If your matter deals with other types of accidents - TAC, work or medical negligence – our staff are happy to sit down with clients to give them all the free information they may need to understand what their situation is and whether

Henry Carus staff are expert in public liability. compensation is available.” The spokesperson said anyone needing further information or assistance could phone Henry Carus & Associates on 9001 1318 or visit hcalawyers. com.au.

Car services, brake checks, fixing clutches – getting these jobs done quickly, efficiently and easily requires a solid handful of essentials. One is location, or being able to get to and from the mechanic shop readily. Another is quick access by the mechanic shop to spare parts, which can readily trim a day off the wait for a car’s return. A third consideration is quality work, the fourth is friendly extra care and the fifth is courtesy pick-up and drop-off. Geelong Brake and Clutch’s Denis and Lesley Williams have made meeting each of these points articles of faith at their South Geelong business. Their clients don’t have to fight city traffic to get to them. Expert advice and product knowledge for all makes and models of vehicles – including offroad and heavy duty vehicles – makes GBC an easy choice. Superior customer service and care is the icing on the cake. GBC offers: brake rotors and pads plus rotor machining; drum brake kits and machining; clutch replacement kits and flywheel machining; and an extensive range of suspension parts; driveshaft replacement kits; and a brake and clutch hose fabrication service, all covering most vehicle makes and models including commercial vehicles and 4WDs. “We have a large range of brake and clutch parts usually on hand, making us quicker, easier to access and we take extra care of our customers,” Lesley says. “We go the extra mile to make people realise that they are important to us. And safety is the key issue too, as we all use the road”. “We‘re also happy to do no-obligation quotes.” Geelong Brake and Clutch is at 8 Dowsett Street, phone 5222 7411.

With 40 years in the business, Barwon Tyre Centre’s Graeme McMahon has its customers’ tyre needs covered. Graeme has watched the industry evolve to offer the large variety of brands and types available today. “I’ve seen plenty of changes in the tyre industry in that time,” he said. “We used to have five manufacturers in Australia. There are 40 different brands now - if not more.” Graeme purchased Barwon Tyre Centre eight years ago and works beside his son Luke, who has followed in his footsteps since the age of 14. “He’s done a mechanical apprenticeship so he can do both the tyre and mechanical side of things,” Graeme said. Graeme said he takes the time to find out his customers’ requirements and financial situation. He has everything from “entry level” to top brand tyres. The company also does mechanical work, including major and minor services. “The personalised service is what we pride ourselves on,” he said. “A lot of our customers are repeat business and we get to know them by their name.” Graeme, 56, hopes his son can take over the family owned business when he retires. “But only if he behaves himself,” he joked. The business has sponsored Camp Quality for eight years and supports the Belmont Lions Football Club and the Belmont and Highton bowls clubs. Graeme is also keen “help the local schools” by with work experience and currently employs a local apprentice. The Barwon Tyre Centre offers a courtesy car service.

By Alistair Kennedy Renault Koleos is the larger of two SUVs in the French carmaker’s Australian range, the other being the compact Captur. Koleos has been on sale here since 2008 without causing much of a ripple on the sales charts but with hopes that the recent arrival of the second-generation model and some decent marketing will attract more interest. Truly cosmopolitan, Koleos was designed in France, has a Japanese-built chassis and is constructed in South Korea. Australia becoming the first country, outside of its native France, to sell it. Koleos is a big, bold vehicle that’s built on the same platform as the well-established Nissan XTrail. The front features an almost vertical grille with chromed strips that run from the headlights along the full length of the guards and all the way back to the ‘gills’ in the front guards. The centre of the grille features a large Renault diamond with another diamond at the rear between horizontal taillights. Three variants are offered. In ascended order of equipment level and price they are the quirkily named Life, Zen and Intens. The entry-level Life comes only with twowheel drive; mid-spec Zen also has the option of all-wheel drive; while the range-topping Intens is only AWD. Koleos Life rides on 17-inch alloy wheels, Zen and Intens each get a different design of 18-inch alloys. There’s just one powertrain, 2.5-litre four-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine that generates 126 kW at 6000 revs, and 226 Nm of torque at 4400 rpm. Transmission is by a continuously variable unit. A turbo-diesel engine is expected to be added to the range later in 2017. Entry and exit is comfortable without any excessive ducking down. There’s sufficient leg, knee and headroom for three adults to travel in the back seat comfort. With two rear passengers the central armrest can be folded to provide two inbuilt drink containers. There’s a clever touch to the interior lighting with the LED able to be switched between five colours and also to be dimmed. The Intens gets a powered panoramic sunroof as standard. It’s available as an option in Zen but not offered in Life. There’s good volume of storage space with 438 litres with the rear seatbacks in place, extending

Model range Koleos Life 2.5-litre petrol 2WD five-door wagon: $29,990 (automatic) Koleos Zen 2.5-litre petrol 2WD five-door wagon: $33,990 (automatic) Koleos Zen 2.5-litre petrol AWD five-door wagon: $36,490 (automatic) Koleos Intens 2.5-litre petrol AWD five-door wagon: $43,490 (automatic)

to 1690 litres. All models get a one-touch folding mechanism for the rear seatbacks. Intens has an automatic bootlid opening via the key fob and and can be closed either the same way or with a button on the bottom of the lid. The opening height can be reduced if needed. Standard across the Koleos range are six airbags; ABS brakes with emergency brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution; electronic stability control; hill-start assist; IsoFix child seat anchors; reversing camera; rear parking sensors; tyre pressure monitoring; height adjustable headlights; and front and rear foglights. Zen adds front parking sensors; electronic parking brake; and automatic ‘walk-away’ door locking while the Intens tops off the safety package with advanced emergency braking; forward collision warning system; lane departure warning; blind spot monitoring; LED headlights with automatic high/low beam switching; side parking sensors; and parking assistance system. Koleos gets Renault’s latest R-Link 2 system for its infotainment technology. The premium Intens model displays onto an 8.7-inch tablet-style touchscreen with the Life and Zen getting a 7.0inch portrait screen We felt that too many of the controls operate through the touchscreen including air conditioning temperature and fan speed adjustment. This requires too much attention to be diverted from the road, which is potentially dangerous. There are USB ports both in the front console and the rear armrest. Bluetooth pairing is logical and quick. Renault is one of the growing number of car companies that have moved above the three-year / 100,000 km warranty limit, providing five years with unlimited kilometres.

29 GEELONG INDY Friday, 3 February, 2017

SPORT McDonald spins his magic LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club has given itself the best possible opportunity of avoiding this season's wooden spoon with a dominant performance on day one of their clash with Frankston Penninsula. Bowling first after winning the toss, Geelong were led by a brilliant display of leg spin bowling from Brenton McDonald, the star all-rounder, bagging 6/42 from 22 overs to continue what has been an outstanding season. With over 360 runs, and 24 wickets for the season, McDonald has been a shining light, and the Cats hierarchy would be wondering where they’d be if they hadn’t secured his services. So with the hosts bundled out for just 151, Geelong had to bat for 32 overs, a proposition that would have proved tricky at times earlier in the season. However, a positive mindset from openers Liam Buchanan and skipper Eamonn Vines ensured that no ghosts were to be seen as the pair put on 87 for the first wicket in quick time. While Buchanan fell for 68 off just 64 balls, Vines continued on to be undefeated on 28 at stumps, ably

supported by Mark Pettini who finished 13 not out. When the pair resume at 1/112 tomorrow with victory in sight, the steely resolve that the young group has been working on will come to the fore, and they should cruise to a well-earned and morale-boosting victory. In the Geelong Cricket Association, the two sides sitting just outside the top six both had good days to keep the intrigue surrounding this season's finalists on a knife's edge. Geelong City batted first against St Josephs at the College Oval and batted all day to post a very competitive 238. Gun import Richie Oliver topscored with 59 before being unfortunately run out. He had good support though, Cody Irvine making 52, while Stephen Anastsiu chipped in with 49. Evergreen paceman Trent Walerys was the leading wicket taker for the Joeys with 3/64. The Sharks will fancy their chances tomorrow, but they will also know St Joseph's boast one of the deepest batting line-ups in the caper, and if they are to win, they will have to fight until the end. Meanwhile, South Barwon ensured their season is far from over, racking up 260 in 81 overs.

Luke Ford continued a wonderful season, making 91 in a gutsy three and a half hour stay at the crease, while Phil Lang and Andrew Ross both did their bit with scores in the 40s. Newtown and Chilwell’s current form would suggest they’ll get nowhere near this, but they are a proud club, and if there is ever a time to stand up and lock in a finals spot, this is it. In division two, Manifold Heights are staring down the barrel in their ultra-important game against ladder leader Bell Park. The Dragons batted first after winning the toss and immediately stamped their authority with a healthy opening stand, before Sharks skipper Chris Bambury dismissed Jamie Spiller for 25. While co-opener Luke Turner remained resolute, Bambury continued to chip away in a marathon spell that must surely have put enormous stress on his hernia problem. In a magnifcent display of patient batting, Turner notched up an even 100 before being stumped, However, Bamburys 6/82 from 38 overs might just have eclipsed him as the best performance of the day. At stumps, Bell Park went into the sheds satisfied that 267 should be enough, although if Bambury can turn back the clock with the bat as well, anything is possible.

Croquet champions’ skills to be put through the hoops By Luke Voogt Torquay couple Anna and Eric Miller can’t wait to get out their mallets when world-championship croquet comes to Geelong for the first time. The 81-year-old former doctors play at the Belmont Croquet Club, which will host qualifiers for the championship when it comes to Melbourne on 25 February. “It’s very special for our club to be hosting some of the world championship events,” Anna said at a croquet tournament in Melbourne last week. “We’re looking forward to watching the world’s best play - especially the Egyptians, because they’re very good players.” Anna enjoys being out in the fresh air and the challenge of trying to outthink the opponent. “I hope to continue playing croquet for much longer,” she said. The couple, who have played croquet for more than 30 years, will play a qualifier themselves. “It will be a tough one,” Anna said. Eric shared his wife’s assessment. “We probably won’t get very far,” he said. He added croquet was more challenging than it looks. “It’s a fascinating game - you’ve got to be very accurate with your shots. There’s only a 32nd of an inch clearance between the ball and the hoop.” Anna introduced Eric to croquet, which he said kept them fit. “It gets you out and you meet a lot of interesting people. We’ve both had a lot of fun with it over the years travelling all over Australia.” Eric said both sexes could compete in croquet on equal terms. “There are probably an equal number of men and women playing. There are women right up at the top level.” Belmont Croquet Club will host daily matches during 12th Golf Croquet World Championships from 25 February until 2 March. About 80 players from 14 countries will play in the championship, which runs until 5 March. Venue manager Kevin Bluff was thrilled Geelong would feature in the event. “We will have three of our local members playing in the qualifiers hoping to secure a place, so this will be an exciting time,” he said. With a new sun shade structure and three new sets of Quadway Hoops (the Australian standard for international play), the club is ready to host. “It’s also a wonderful opportunity for people to see the sport in action, at its best,” Kevin said. “We hope to inspire even more new players to give croquet a go.” President of Croquet Victoria Jim Clement said the sport was far from“old-fashioned”. “Croquet is growing in popularity with 89 30 GEELONG INDY Friday, 3 February, 2017

Anglers have a tight field day ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Anglers were spoilt for choice over the past week, with most species on fire. Kingfish went nuts right along the coast as reports of tuna inside Port Phillip Heads sent excitement levels into overdrive. Anglers caught kingies on many different methods. Jigging was successful in the heads area and offshore, while fishing live baits like squid, slimy mackerel and yakkas was a great way to tangle with some of the larger specimens. Tuna went strong from Portland all the way to Port Phillip Heads. Last weekend large schools were reported inside the heads, with a few fish to 15kg taken on smaller-profile lures such as the Sea Iron Pelacus. Larger plastics like the nine-inch Sluggo or 10-inch 10-I nch Hogy could also be worth casting at these tuna as well as kings. The grammar school lagoon also fished well. Tony Hynds had an awesome session casting Atomic Hardz in the Matt Ayu colour around the moored boats, catching beam to 35cm and pinkies as well as a couple of much bigger fish that blew him off. Quality snapper were still moving around the outer-harbour. Nicholas Hinks and father Stuart anchored near the edge of the channel off Portarlington where they caught an 85cm fish. Plenty of snapper from 2kg to 4kg were also taken along the channel’s edge on fresh baits such as pilchards, silver whiting and squid. Freshwater anglers again had success at Stony Creek Reservoir. Rainbow and brown trout to just over 1kg were a common capture on lures cast out from the rock wall. The Barwon River was a hot spot for redfin to 35cm. Small hard-body lures worked hard against the bank caught plenty of fish, with Queen’s Park an ideal place to start the search for redfin. Some big carp to 6kg kept kids busy toward the end of the school break, with corn and worms being the most successful baits. This weekend’s settled weather should provide more opportunities to chase tuna hanging around the heads as well as kingfish also in the area at the moment. Snapper enthusiasts should target the outer harbour as the place to be.

SWINGING WOOD: Eric and Anne Miller have been playing croquet together for 30 years. clubs and more than 2800 members in Victoria alone - 265 clubs and 9000-plus players nationally,” Jim said. “Some of the most successful players at the moment are only young.”

Golf croquet is a simpler and quicker version of the game and takes about 50 minutes to complete. Admission is free by registering at http://croquetvic.asn.au.
