Dust road death trap Mr McBeth said he and adjoining lot owners would contribute to a less costly solution - to move the fish to a suitable nearby habitat and not divert the road. He said sealing the road would benefit the wider community by reducing the dust problem. “There is a common sense solution that may well save a life. “I have no idea why council will not fix this death trap for the benefit of the road users and the surrounding community.” Casey city presentation manager David Richardson said the council would continue to manage dust on the road in coming months but didn’t plan to seal the road. “Roads like O’Grady Road that service commercial properties are typically built by developers through planning permit conditions. “The developer determines if and when the road is built.” Mr Richardson said any development had to strictly comply with federal legislation dictating how the protected galaxias were managed. (EPA) is monitoring dust levels in the O’Grady Road area after years of dust complaints from neighbouring residents and businesses. EPA southern metro manager Marleen Mathias stated the organisation had provided verbal advice to Casey council to suppress dust on its road. “EPA understands that (the) council do not have any plans to seal the road.” The EPA study is expected to finish in February, with data sent off for analysis to help determine further action, Ms Mathias said. On 22 December, the EPA sent letters to three businesses - including soil yards - to implement dust mitigation measures and create dust management plans. Ms Mathias said one business had provided a dust management plan. “EPA will follow up with the other businesses to confirm whether dust mitigation measures have been implemented. “If dust is found to be an issue at these sites, these measures could be formalised in EPA notices that would be issued to businesses.”

Food company Marvel Packers has joined the scores of complainants about dust from the O’Grady Road, Hallam, area - but it’s not pointing the blame at the oft-suspected soilworks. Marvel owner Paul McBeth blames the Casey council-managed dirt road itself - which kicks up fine grey dust as each of hundreds of trucks rumble past every day. The powder has to be cleaned from machinery inside Marvel’s factory every week, Mr McBeth said. But, most seriously, each truck creates a thick cloud that hovers and obscures sightlines for traffic exiting Marvel onto O’Grady Road. Mr McBeth said he worries for the safety of staff, customers and suppliers using the road. “My staff and I literally take unacceptable risks driving to and from work each day,” he said. “Oncoming vehicles are often just a metre away before drivers can see each other. “Add to this the fact the road is often so pot-
holed that traffic is forced onto the wrong side of the road. “It is only a matter of time until a disastrous truck versus car impact occurs.” One of his staff, Kalaiselvan Saparathinam, walks to work along O’Grady Road from Hallam train station. Mr Saparathinam has to be wary of oncoming traffic that can’t see him as he walks through the dust clouds. Marvel Packers recorded footage of plumes of dust kicking up behind a passing truck on 31 January - just a day after the council had applied a dust suppressant to the road. Casey council has no plans to seal the road which was costed at $14.8 million five years ago and rejected by property owners. The project would include $3.8 million for acquiring property to divert the road in order to protect the protected Dwarf galaxias fish in the adjoining road drain. According to Mr McBeth, the drain is “putrid” and filled with illegally dumped rubbish and a Galaxias predator, the Eastern gambusia.

Maccas’ machetes raid Two men wearing balaclavas, dressed in black and armed with machetes who robbed a McDonald’s restaurant in Springvale are still on the run from police. The two men entered the restaurant on the corner of Osbourne Avenue and Westall Road at about 5am on Sunday 29 January. The pair confronted a staff member with their weapons and demanded the tills emptied from both the front counter and the drive through area. The robbers fled through the main entrance and were last seen fleeing on foot east along Osbourne Avenue.

Two years in jail for bone-breaking movie-night attack By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Dandenong man has been jailed for more than two years after he brutally bashed a boardinghouse mate with an iron bar during a drug-fuelled movie night. David Ratcliffe, 51, pleaded guilty to recklessly causing serious injury for inflicting multiple strikes that broke bones and lacerated the victim’s head, body, arms and legs. During sentencing on 30 January, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court judge Jack Vandersteen said Ratcliffe and the victim were “very lucky it wasn’t a homicide”. “It’s very clear that you must have repetitively struck the victim with that weapon. “It’s a very serious assault from the top of his head to his ankle area.”
Pestrian injured in crash A woman is now in a stable condition, after being struck by a car in Dandenong’s Little India precinct on Monday 30 January. Police say the 32-year-old woman was standing at the rear of her parked car on Foster Street when she was struck by a westbound Mitsubishi Magna about 2.40pm. She was taken to The Alfred hospital, and was in a critical condition at that time. Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives believe the Magna was involved in several crashes on Clow and Lonsdale streets before the crash. The Magna’s 54-year-old male driver stopped at the scene and was taken to Dandenong Hospital for observation. Foster Street was blocked for several hours between Mason Street and Dandenong railway station as Major Collision Unit detectives investigated the crash scene. By Casey Neill Flourishing wetland or lacklustre lake? The water body in Monash Reserve on Monash Drive, Dandenong South, is in tip-top shape according to Greater Dandenong Council. But Arco Restaurant owner Lindsay Bull said it had become a stagnant pond devoid of bird and fish life and filled with mosquitos. “The lake got very filthy dirty back in December 2015,” he said. “They were going to empty it. It didn’t end up happening. “They suggested we needed to keep the fountain running to aerate the water.” Mr Bull said the pump was attached to Arco and “I was always paying the bills for the electricity of that”. He said that when he contacted the council about the bills he was told the fountain wasn’t needed after all and was “aesthetic looks for the restaurant”. It was switched off for a time, but then removed before Christmas and returned in January following repairs, leaving him confused and frustrated. “We used to have bird life in lake, now there’s nothing,” Mr Bull said. “There’s no bird life, there’s no fish, there’s no ducks. We used to have pelicans as well.” The council’s engineering services director Julie Reid said that the lake was a constructed stormwater treatment wetland that formed part of the municipality’s drainage infrastructure. “Independent assessments carried out recently indicate the wetland is in very good health, attracting both fish and birdlife,” she said. “On this basis the council considers the current maintenance regime for the wetland is appropriate and there are no immediate plans to alter this.” The wetland is a passive stormwater management tool in that it holds and treats runoff that can contain contaminants. A private developer built it in 2007 and the council has managed it for the past six years, including cleaning a pollutant trap, dealing with litter and landscaping.
In Brief
Mr Vandersteen noted that one of the blows caused a deep laceration that was “down to the bone” of the victim’s skull. Another shattered part of the victim’s skull. There were also defensive injuries to his arms including a fracture and lacerations to the right forearm - one of them again down to the bone. Once the victim had been knocked to the floor his legs were lacerated several times by the blows and his right tibia was fractured, Mr Vandersteen said. The assault came soon after Ratcliffe had accused his mate of stealing from him, Mr Vandersteen said. At first, Ratcliffe denied the assault to police. He then said the pair had used drugs during the night and watched movies on TV but was unable to recall the argument. “When the police described the injuries,
there’s no doubt that you were surprised and remorseful,” Mr Vandersteen said. Mr Vandersteen noted Ratcliffe’s most serious prior offence of armed robbery and his history of drug-linked schizophrenia, transience and unemployment. The accused’s drug use started with cannabis 37 years ago then branched into amphetamines, GHB and most recently, ice. He was a different person since sobering up while in remand for nearly three months, Mr Vandersteen said. “But you can see the type of person that you can become. It’s a very destructive, violent person.” Ratcliffe was jailed for two years - the Magistrate Court jurisdiction’s maximum term - plus three further months for failing to appear on bail. He will be eligible for parole after 16 months.
A man has been arrested at the Dandenong Comfort Inn following the execution of a drugs related search warrant. Police raided the room early in the morning of Sunday 29 January where they said they found a pen pistol, rounds of .22 calibre ammunition, and a knife along with small quantities of methamphetamine and marijuana. A 59-year-old man from Dandenong was charged with drug and firearm offences and has ben bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court at a later date.
Attempted murder charge Police have arrested and charged a 29-year-old man from Hallam with attempted murder following the almost fatal stabbing of a Berwick man in Noble Park last year. Police were told the 24-year-old victim and four friends arrived at a party on Ian Street, Noble Park, about 4am on Saturday 1 October. The group was approached and threatened by two males, who got out of a 1998 dark-coloured Holden Commodore sedan with silver rims. Police allege the pair threatened the victim and his friends, who tried to reason with the attackers before running back towards the party. The victim tripped and fell and the men assaulted him, one stabbing him to the chest, stomach and upper leg several times. Police arrested a Hallam man at his BelgraveHallam Road home about 7.50am on Friday 27 January. He was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday 30 January.

It’s a steely clampdown By Cam Lucadou-Wells Motorists with more than $141,000 of outstanding warrants had their day of reckoning during a Sheriff ’s Office and Victoria Police joint clampdown in Narre Warren and Cranbourne on Tuesday, 31 January. Twenty-three fine evaders with a collective 422 outstanding warrants were detected with Automatic Number Plate Recognition in just three hours on Cranbourne Road in Narre Warren and Linsell Boulevard in Cranbourne. Eight fine evaders paid more than $13,000 to clear 42 warrants on the day. Another seven were required to pay more than $27,000 in debts within a week to avoid suspension of their driver licences or vehicle registrations. Officers clamped one vehicle’s wheel - which would remain clamped until the driver’s debt was cleared. At the same sites, Victoria Police members conducted breath tests and detected six unregistered vehicles, six unlicensed drivers and six people driving while suspended. Sergeant Katie Arnol, of Cranbourne police, said suspended, unregistered and unlicensed drivers were a particular target given they were involved in 19 per cent of fatal car crashes in Victoria.
Police breath-test vehicles during the operation in Narre Warren. 164393 Automatic Number Plate Recognition sites were being operated monthly in Casey to help drive down the high incidence of banned motorists, Sgt Arnol said. She regarded the latest operation’s numbers as “slower than usual” in Casey. Sheriff of Victoria Brendan Facey said the operation showed his officers could be “anywhere at any time”.
Picture: ROB CAREW
“This operation was designed to find those people who are deliberately trying to avoid paying their fines, while minimising any inconvenience to other motorists. “Paying your fines is not voluntary. “If you do incur a fine, contact us to discuss your options and deal with it early before additional penalties apply.”
Drivers to pay for ‘unused’ road if toll period extended By Cam Lucadou-Wells The State Opposition has threatened to block a funding plank for the Western Distributor project, claiming south-eastern residents would pay tolls for a road they “may never use”. The $5.1 billion project in Melbourne’s west was to be part funded by the State Government and CityLink operator Transurban. As part of the deal, Transurban would fund most of the project in exchange for extending tolls on CityLink for up to 12 further years.
On a visit to Sweeney Reserve, Berwick, on 1 February, Opposition leader Matthew Guy demanded to see the business case and funding model presented in Parliament. “It’s up to (the Government) to show us the figures. “I want to know exactly how much money is being gouged out of south-east motorists to feed to the western suburbs to build a truck route over there. “If you live in the south-east and (paying) the CityLink tolls you would be paying for a road you may never see (and) you may never use.”
Opposition roads spokesman Ryan Smith said Premier Daniel Andrews had backed himself into a corner in his negotiations with Transurban. “We just want to make sure the deal is the best it can be.” Under the proposal, the State Government would contribute $1.6 billion for the road - designed to divert trucks from the West Gate Bridge. Treasurer Tim Pallas said the project, along with the on-going Monash Freeway widening, would help slash traffic congestion from Geelong to Pakenham and “end our reliance on the West Gate Bridge”.
In Brief $2000 fine for tossed butt A man from Hallam will be forced to pay more than $2000 after he was fined by the Environment Protection Authority Victoria for tossing a cigarette butt out of his car window. While the initial fine for the action was only $607, after failing to appear at his court challenge the man will be required to pay the EPA’s $2000 legal costs as well. The Ringwood Magistrate’s Court heard the man tossed his lit cigarette butt out of the window of his car on Wellington Road in Mulgrave about 6.15pm on 6 January 2016. A witness to the incident reported the man to the EPA through the Report Litter App later the same evening. The witness who reported the man to the EPA gave evidence in court that lead to the man being found in breach of the Environment Protection Act 1970. EPA Acting Executive Director of Regulatory Practice and Strategy Lisa McLeod said this case highlights the importance of the community reporting litterers. “We would like to thank that person for making a report to us,” she said. “This case really reinforces the importance of community reporting in holding litterers to account.” The fine amounts for littering have increased from the start of the current financial year ranging from $311 for a small piece of rubbish or unlit cigarette up to $622 for a lit cigarette. The EPA encourages people to report littering offences though its app, website or by phone and collect as many details as possible about who, where and when the littering occurs.
Cashed up for sport upgrades Upgrades at two sports grounds in Casey have each received $100,000 from the State Government. MP Luke Donnellan announced a grant towards new floodlighting at Kalora Park, Narre Warren North. In a separate grant, MP Judith Couacaud Graley announced funds for an irrigation and drainage system at Strathaird Reserve, Narre Warren South.

Valentines’ love is set to sizzle By Rebecca Skilton Say it with sausage. That’s the romantic advice from woodsmoked specialists Bert Glinka and Brendan D’Amelio who say they have unlocked the salami secret to every Valentine’s heart. The brothers-in-law at Uncle’s Smallgoods have swapped the traditional bouquet of roses for a choice of two beautifully presented half dozen and dozen stem sausage arrangements which are sure to impress and amaze a meat-loving special someone. “The general response is that it’s great, that it’s really quirky,” said Bert, who added that social media had taken brilliantly to the concept. “The orders placed so far are mainly by females buying for hubbies or boyfriends. A few have even requested to have notes included.” For $60 a half dozen selection will deliver one kabana pork, one kabana turkey, one double smoked country sausage, half a kilo of beef brisket, an Italian salami and a French saucisson. Alternatively, gift givers can opt for the $100 dozen stem bouquet, which includes two kabana pork, two kabana turkeys, one double smoked country sausage, half a kilo of beef brisket, an Italian salami, a French saucisson, a small ham and a streaky bacon pack. As Bert explained, the idea for the meaty arrangement stemmed from a brainstorming session for Valentine’s Day and his own previous 14 February experiences. “Why are we always the givers?” he said about the bouquets’ popularity as a gift for male partners. “We’re always giving flowers. Why don’t we deserve something as well?” With more than 20 years of “meatsperience”, the team at Dandenong’s Thomas Street deli have perfected the art of smallgoods, their handmade methods dating back to century-old Polish recipes. They use Australian hardwood and the wood of fruit trees for real smoking. “We’re passionate about making very high quality products without any of the artificial flavours and preservatives,” said Bert.
Bert Glinka says this is the real way to a man's heart. “We make good, old fashioned products.” Knowing where all their ingredients come from is another important factor. “We believe in locally sourced products. “We’re all Australian made, with no fillers or flavour enhancers.”
With the purchase of a new Dandenong factory, Uncle’s Smallgoods is thriving and deliveries have spread to inner Melbourne. “We distribute to a lot of high-end restaurants and cafes,” said Bert. “We’ve recently been involved with the Grand
Hyatt and Park Hyatt.” While Valentine’s Day for Bert himself will involve a celebration of the newly acquired factory, he hasn’t ruled out a meatier gift. “I’d love (a sausage bouquet)!” laughed Bert. “Hopefully my wife has got the hint!”

Two Hallam Primary School students last year inspired schoolmates to pitch in to help families in crisis. Chanelle and Fathima, who both started high school this year, led the effort in filling more than 25 boxes as part of the Food for Families appeal by Wesley Mission Australia. They spoke at assemblies to drive awareness and donations. Chanelle was mindful that some people didn’t have the luxury of eating a snack after school. “People who are homeless... may have one meal a day that isn’t even a nice meal.” Her friend Fathima said small acts of kindness made a difference. “There are lots of children that are our age and don’t get all the stuff we get. “It’s really important that they at least get the basics - food is one - because some people
can’t afford it.” In Casey, 104 donation boxes and bags were filled with items like pasta, toilet rolls, sandwich spreads, nappies, school snacks and gifts. About 47 tonnes - in more than 3000 donation boxes and bags - was collected for the appeal from across greater Melbourne. Wesley crisis and homelessness manager Janene Evans said the community’s continued generosity was important with homelessness on the rise. “With Australia facing an affordable housing crisis, we can safely predict that the 47 tonnes of goods will go a long way to helping struggling families throughout 2017.” The appeal was supported by 235 volunteers, 234 workplaces, 99 schools and kindergartens and 152 individuals

Waverley Gardens is very excited about the installation of a new state-of-the-art Food Court Playground, the first of a number of new additions that will be seen rolled out for families and customers in 2017. Centre manager Belinda Donnelly said the new playground now catered for younger children and also gave parents and guardians the ability to relax with a coffee and some food while watching their children have fun. “Another great outcome of the installation is we now have the previous food court playground that we are looking to donate to a local community group or charity.” Waverley Gardens is continuing its ambience works throughout the centre with the objective of making Waverley Gardens as convenient as possible for the community. Changes, some of which are already complete, include the addition of mall seating, food court tables and chairs, extra parking bays for seniors, disabled, parents with prams and express parking
as well as increasing parking limits to four hours. Both of the centre’s parents’ rooms will also be undergoing a cosmetic facelift in the coming months. New centre marketing manager Jodie-Lee Murphy has a passion for families and the local community. “We will be implementing and providing many free events and opportunities for local residents, families, schools and sporting groups to get involved in,” she said. The first event to launch this year on Tuesday 21 February 21 will be Kids Play at the Gardens, a free fortnightly activity on Tuesdays from 10am to 1pm focusing on health, education and, of course, fun. Waverley Gardens Shopping Centre offers an extensive range of stores and services. Major retailers like Aldi, Big W, Coles, Target and Woolworths along with approximately 110 specialty stores and more than 2000 free car parking spaces help make shopping convenient.

Crowd crows for Luna festivities By Victoria Stone-Meadows Dandenong Market saw in the Luna New Year with a bang this year as the whole community came out to usher in the year of the Rooster. The market was alive with dance, music, food and people from 10am on Sunday 29 January as the celebrations went underway. The family friendly and free event was open to all in the community with all kinds of traditional street foods and entertainment on offer. There was even a special live cooking demonstration with chef, presenter, and specialist food
consultant Tim Hollands. About 24,000 people came to the market for the celebrations and Dandenong Market Marketing Manager Briony Walker said it couldn’t have been a better day. “It was really wonderful and it’s important for us to celebrate these events because we are the home of cultural celebrations,” she said. “We are one of the most multicultural hubs in Dandenong and the Luna New Year Festival was a really great day.” “We are thankful for the performers, food traders, and everyone that came along.”

Looking Back 100 years ago 8 February 1917 Garden plots Editor At the instigation of Crs Abbott and Keys, a motion was passed at the last meeting of the Dandenong Council that the caretaker of the plots has his attention drawn to the state of the plots. The meaning of this is that the caretaker is expected to do more work in keeping the “outside” of the plots free from weeds. Two days per week are now given by the caretaker to keeping the “inside plots” free from weeds. Often the day lasts from 7am ‘til 7pm and for this he received 12/6 per week. He has to provide his own mower, oil, repairs, and all other implements. Councillors admit the “inside” of the plots are kept in good order. They will be replaced by 11 elected councillors who will represent 11 wards (neighbourhoods) within the city. In an interview with the Journal with the three commissioners Ian Cathie, Margret Nicholls and John Nixon, they reflected on their two years at the city’s helm.
Mr Cathie cited three “main achievements” over the transitional years. “We’ve reached our rates reduction target,” he said. “Every item before us has been held in open council for public scrutiny. “We have developed a very effective customer service system in which 80 per cent of inquiries are answered on the spot.” 5 years ago 6 February 2012 Blaze prompts warning Greater Dandenong Council has urged residents to reduce fire hazards on their property in wake of an 84 hectare blaze in paddocks in Glasscocks Road, Lynbrook. FIRST HOME BUYERS HAVE AFFORDABLE ENTRY TO PROPERTY MARKET AROUND REGIONAL CITIES The latest REIV data shows there are still affordable opportunities for buyers to enter the property market near some of Victoria’s fastest growing regional cities. While Ballarat Central enjoyed strong growth in the year to September - with turnover of 254 properties and price growth of 5.8 per cent to a median of $344,000 - the town’s outskirts continue to allow buyers to get a foothold on the property ladder for significantly less. Within five kilometres of the Ballarat CBD, Redan, Black Hill and Ballarat East are all more affordable alternatives with median house prices below the $300,000 barrier. 2 DANDENONG JOURNAL Monday, 6 February, 2017
Redan recorded a median house price of $235,000 in September; Black Hill had a median of $270,000; while buyers could purchase in Ballarat East for a median price of $287,000. Buyers should also consider Sebastopol and Wendouree on Ballarat’s urban fringe with median house prices of $250,000 and $249,975 respectively. Further afield, Maryborough - north of Ballarat - is one of Victoria’s most affordable towns with a median house price of $213,750. With a median house price of $675,000, Geelong has experienced some of the
state’s highest annual price growth. However, savvy buyers can still snap up a bargain in a number of suburbs on the city’s outskirts. Buyers can purchase a home in nearby Whittington for a median price of $275,000, with the suburb recording moderate annual growth of 5 per cent. Other areas offering affordability on Geelong’s outskirts include Norlane with a median house price of $226,505; Corio, with a median of $244,000; and Newcomb, with a median house price of $298,000.
REIV data shows there are also affordable areas recording solid growth near Mildura, which has enjoyed a high turnover of properties over the year (568 sales) and a median house price of $260,000. About 10 minutes away, Merbein is one of the state’s fastest growing and most affordable towns in Victoria with a median house price of $197,500 while Red Cliffs’ median house price is $206,250. NEW HOMES & LAND
EASY HOME LIVING BONUS Home buyers should expect better. For too long people young and old who are looking to build their dream home have had to settle for less - less flexibility in their home selections and designs, less in what is actually included in their new home versus what is shown on display, less service afforded to them and overall less satisfaction in the build process. RMS Homes wants to give its customers the best - the best service, the best value and the best quality. It wants to make the home purchase as easy as possible. How does it do this? By including everything in the new home - all the fixtures and fittings others call extras RMS Homes calls inclusions. Its Turn Key Essential inclusions are industry leading in providing home buyers with the full picture of what is included in their home. The Colchester 300E display showcased at 5 Clovelly Way, Officer, on the Timbertop Estate, demonstrates its incredible inclusions which all come at no extra cost. For February, RMS Homes is providing even greater value for home buyers in Melbourne. Its Easy Living Bonus offer includes: * Fisher and Paykel refrigerator with ice
maker and water dispenser; * 55” home theatre style television; * L.G front loader washing machine; * L.G condensation free clothes dryer. These incredible bonus items are combined with RMS Homes’s complete turn-key premium inclusions and allowances - P Class Waffle Pod Slab, 2550mm ceilings, Low E Glazing to Windows, landscaping, concrete path and drive, fencing, letterbox and even a clothesline! RMS also provides the full flexibility of altering any of its designs to suit customers’ needs. Alternatively it can build to customers’ dream home design. Buyers can secure everything RMS Homes is offering with a $500 full deposit on all of its designs with no more to pay until construction starts which is a real money saver for those customers with their own land already. The Colchester 300E as displayed is $329,400. For more information visit www.rmshomes. com.au or call into the display home at 5 Clovelly Way, Officer, in the Timbertop Display Village. Call 1800 663 853.

ENTERTAINMENT Sweet and spicy savoured EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL By Cam Lucadou-Wells There were plenty of flavours to savour from dining out on some of south-east Melbourne’s newest eating spots in 2016. Here are our year’s picks of some of the most affordable and sheer delicious eats, adding to the region’s rising foodie reputation. Don’t be shy to discover and enjoy the following eateries, and to let us know what should be added to our indulgent itinerary for 2017. So without further ado, below are the 2016 Dine Local awards.
runaway sensation in 2016. Up to 700 of these colossal ice-cream milkshakes embossed with candies, chocolate sauce, fairy floss and Tim Tams were bought each day. However, we’re not sure every customer would have been able to finish one of these creations. Under the radar was an equally thoughtful and creative menu of pre-dessert food such as a smashed avo rosti including flavours of dukka and, goats cheese, and eggs Benedict with coffee, vanilla, banana and maple syrup. The cafe’s drawing power has caught the attention of shopping centres which have courted owner Steven Richard for possible franchising opportunities. As it is, Mr Richard has plans to duplicate his success with a Dandenong branch to open in 2017.
Wendy Wong pours for effect during the tea-drinking ritual. 151871 Picture: GARY SISSONS Vikki serves up a mega-shake at Sugar Buns. 158728 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Sweet, Sweet Success Award Sugar Buns cafe in Hampton Park, which drew long queues for its decadent mega-shakes, was a
How’s The Serenity Award No dining experience came close to the meditative qualities of Milan Tea House in Springvale. There’s something mesmerising about the 1700-year ritualised pouring of Chinese pu-erh tea from a hand-made purple clay teapot. Creating a beautiful, ambient setting among
jade ornaments and wooden cabinets, owner Wendy Wong pours for effect. She makes a convincing case for the therapeutic value of a cup of tea.
Cooking with foil at Pouch Dining. 160036 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS
Beef roast with paratha bread at Chilly Bowl. 155527 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Won’t Burn A Hole In Your Pocket Award We were gobsmacked by the quality and value served up at Chilly Bowl in Dandenong. The north and south Indian-inspired mains are generous, brilliantly conceived by a worldly and accomplished chef and yet start at just $5. Of the many highlights, try the kappa and Spanish mackerel curry - a dry chilli blast with plentiful slabs of fish and a coffee undertone. It comes with a soothing tamarind and coconut-infused potato side-dish. Fun To Watch Award One of the most innovative new eateries was Hot Pouch Bar and Dining - a pop-up venue on the terrace of Dandenong Market. It was a joy to watch fresh prawns, banana leaf, sambal sauce, okra, mushrooms, greens and chillies wrapped and steamed in a foil pouch on a hot plate.
As the pouch expanded, the ingredients were cooked in their own juices. A delicious way to eat in a stylish, contemporary setting.
Rice porridge was a hard act to swallow. 158000 Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS Please Sir, Can I Have Some More Award Dine Local’s mind was cast back to the famous gruel-eating scene of Oliver! as part of an experiment with a FODMAP diet. There was no way of sprucing up a breakfast bowl of rice porridge, though slices of mango and banana helped make it digestible. The undoubted culinary lowlight of the year.

27 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 6 February, 2017
MOTORING A hard act to follow The highly anticipated hardtop version of the Mazda MX-5, the RF (Retractable Fastback), has arrived at Berwick Mazda and promises a more exhilarating, open air driving experience. The next generation MX-5 RF is available in two grades - RF and RF GT - and Berwick Mazda general manager Andrew Soligo said it delivers a much stronger street presence thanks to the sweeping lines of the hard roof. “The new MX-5 RF will delight a much wider audience of car lovers. “With just a quick push of a button, the hard top will retract or close in only 13 seconds, this can even be achieved at up to 10kmph. “You’re truly getting the best experience with its clever engineering,” Mr Soligo said. The MX-5 RF includes standard safety equipment including Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA). The high-grade RF GT boasts Adaptive Frontlighting System (AFS) - LED headlights that swivel up to 15 degrees to reveal more of a road’s corner. MX-5 RF is now on display and available for sale at Berwick Mazda. Book a test drive now on 8796 6222 or visit the friendly team at 3 Prestige Place, Narre Warren.

SPORT Tough titans get ready to clash vitally important, while marquee Cameron Dinger is a rising-star who continues to impress with his leggies.
By Nicholas Creely DDCA GRAND FINAL PREVIEW BUCKLEY RIDGES v CRANBOURNE WHEN: Wednesday 8 February, 5.15pm. The date may change after this goes to print so an alternative date is Wednesday 22 February, 5.15pm. WHERE: Park Oval, Dandenong. In one of the most action-packed and entertaining Twenty20 tournaments in the competition’s short but exciting history, it’s all set to come down to this - a clash of the titans of such, with the Bucks and Eagles set to battle it out for the Dandenong Club Twenty20 trophy. Both teams have had stellar tournaments with some incredible individual performances and crushing team victories. The Bucks, well they haven’t even lost a game in this tournament, highlighting their dominance with the white ball - more importantly it’s been the manner of their victories - they are not just scraping over the line, they are dictating terms against every line-up they come across. Their line-up is chock-a-block with stars. At the top is Susantha Pradeep who has ploughed 243 runs this tournament at an impressive average of 48.6, while the other opener, Daniel Watson, struck a magnificent and unbeaten 119 in the semi win over Berwick two weeks ago. Luke Fletcher provides coverage with both bat and ball and is a brutal hitter of the white ball, Rajitha Jayathunga is a natural run-maker who has hit some form, while Troy Aust, the reliable skipper, is compiling an impressive season. Their bowling is tough to crack with Luke Fletcher, Daniel Watson, Lukas Hoogenboom, Matthew Goodwright, Hussain Ali and Wes Nicholas all different and all hard to score off. More importantly, they continue to plug away and take wickets.
Luke Fletcher is crucial with both bat and ball for the Bucks. 164113 And then there is Cranbourne, the champions of Turf 1 this season, which continues to set the tone for the entire competition. There has been just one blip in their radar this Twenty20 campaign, a narrow loss to Mordialloc in the round-robins. But their major strength is turning it on in the big games. Led by the revered Steve Spoljaric, who actually hasn’t quite got going this tournament, with 86 runs at 14.3, the Eagles are not short of superstars. With the ball, however, Spoljaric has taken 9 wickets at an average of 8.8, with an economy rate of 3.6 - truly mind-boggling. Then there is Matthew Chasemore who, de-

spite possessing one of the most unique batting techniques, churns out runs like no other. It may be a big statement, but Chasemore could be the most in-form Twenty20 club cricketer in the country. He has scored 237 runs, including a remarkable 136 for the Eagles, while with Main Ridge in the MPCA where he is a marquee in its Jack Peacock Cup, Chasemore has made another two centuries this season. ???? These two champion cricketers are the backbone of the Eagles line-up, and rely heavily on their on-field exploits to get over the line. They have found some players, such as Lucas Ligt, Jakeb McVicar and Pradeep Boyal, who are
All-rounder lays down the willow after a stellar career By Nicholas Creely Dandenong champion Sarah Elliott has announced her retirement from professional cricket with immediate effect after a stellar career representing Australia at the highest level. Elliott, 35, was one of the finest Australian allrounders to grace the field, representing Australia in 39 matches across all formats, and is well remembered for a stellar century in 2011 when the Aussies reclaimed the Ashes. She has become one of the most iconic figures in the rise of women’s cricket in Australia, if not the world, with her exploits not going unnoticed. Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland paid tribute to the impact Elliott made in her cricketing career and her contribution to women’s sport. “We congratulate Sarah Elliott on a wonderful international and domestic career and the outstanding contribution she has made to cricket both on and off the field,” he said. “Sarah proved she could match it with the best players in the world and she should be proud of the way she carried herself throughout her career and the legacy she leaves behind. “We would like to thank Sarah for her service to cricket as both a player and leader, and for her commitment to cricket whilst also raising two beautiful boys.” Elliott has also captained the Vic Spirit, Victoria’s women’s team from 2005/06 until 2008/09 and has been a major player in the WBBL, with both the Melbourne Renegades and Adelaide Strikers. She was the inaugural captain of the Renegades before making the switch across to the Strikers at the beginning of this WBBL season. It is unconfirmed whether Elliott will continue on with the Dandenong Women’s team in Women’s Premier Cricket beyond this season where she has scored eight centuries in a stellar career with the Lions. So far this season Elliott has scored 94 runs at 47.00 while she has been prolific with the ball, taking seven wickets.

One thing for certain, though, is that both teams have equal rights to hold the trophy aloft at the end of the day. Twenty20 is such an exciting spectacle and with the thought of Steven Spoljaric steaming in to Daniel Watson with a white ball, it makes every cricket loving fan excited for what’s next.

Endeavour Hills Rugby Union Club has started 2017 in exciting fashion with some changes at the top of its on-and-off field leadership groups. After 14 years as club president, Anthony Nelson has stood down due to work and family commitments and been replaced by long-time club stalwart Jeff Lemalu. Lemalu started with the club in the seniors back in the early ’90s as a strong first five. He has captained and coached all senior sides in that time and last season took the senior thirds to the grand final and is looking forward to a successful 2017 as president. Last season’s senior coach Paul MaihiTaniora has stood down and has been replaced by seniors backs coach Nigel Henare. Henare comes to the club with a very strong background having played and coached at the highest level in New Zealand. He has also coached Thailand and while at the helm took its team to the Hong Kong sevens tournament for its first and only time. Last season the seniors had their best season in the Premier division winning eight games and were unlucky to not play finals. The coaching staff and players will be looking to go one step further this year and have been training since November under fitness coach Dave Muliara, a former Australian Schools rep and a current senior player. Training has commenced for the 2017 season and the numbers are good for this time of the year. Training is held at Frog Hollow, James Cook Drive, Endeavour Hills, on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 6.30pm. New and old players are welcome because the club fields three sides in the Premier division of Victorian Rugby Union. 29 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 6 February, 2017

Many hands make light work for those Hawks By Nicholas Creely DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW ROUND 9 (DAY 1) Hallam-Kalora Park v Springvale South Well they possess the most consistent top-order batsmen in the competition, and once again they have delivered as the Hawks posted a tricky 7/247 against Springvale South. Ben Hillard (59), Leigh Booth (30) and Jagveer Hayer (42) have been a cornerstone for the Hawks’ success with the bat this season, constantly providing the ladder-leader with solid foundations. Corey Booth (53 not out) then provided the cream on top, with a second consecutive halfcentury, as the Hawks knocked around runs to stumps. It’s going to be a tough chase, but a chase that may define just how serious of a contender the Bloods truly are. Berwick v North Dandenong The Bears are charging towards finals, totally dominating proceedings against North Dandenong at The Cave. The Maroons elected to bat, and with Jarrod Armitage and James Wilcock steaming in, the task was always going to be difficult. And the pair were simply electric early, with Wilcock (2/25) in particularly taking the stumps of the two openers out of the ground and Armitage (4/27) bowling some serious heat - at one stage a pair of bouncers delivered to Caleb Millman were as quick as any deliveries seen in the competition this season. The visitors were rattled ever since then, rolled for just 104 with Clayton McCartney (31) showing his class once again. Berwick are currently 4/151, with Nathan Pilon (84) playing a brutal knock, and eyeing an outright victory next week Dingley v Cranbourne If the Dingoes can do the unthinkable next week and knock off the champion Eagles the Turf 1 competition will go into a tail-spin. That is how interesting this match at Souter Oval has become, with no side taking any ascendency after day one and very little separating third from eighth on the ladder. The Dingoes made 195, a very competitive home score, with Matt Chasemore (4/34) and Steve Spoljaric (4/79) carrying the bowling. And the Eagles survived the day, finishing on 0/15 in a pressure-filled little period. Parkfield v Narre Warren There has been a lot more fight in the tank for Narre Warren in recent weeks, and it is a big chance to claim its first win of the season over a struggling Parkfield outfit. The Bears elected to bat, where they never really got going, skittled for just 153 - the impressive Mitchell Shirt (4/23) was destructive, while Janaka Liyanabadalge (3/19) has risen with the ball in the last couple of matches. With a testing 28-over period before stumps, the Magpies battled and battled, content to get through the day unscathed, finishing on 1/37 off 28 overs. Daniel Orchard (10) and Mitchell Shirt (11)

Pattinson set for state recall By Nicholas Creely VIC PREMIER CRICKET REVIEW - ROUND 15 (DAY 2) James Pattinson is most likely going to be sleeping with his phone very close to his ears because -after Saturday’s extraordinary and match-winning performance- the Victorian selectors may have little choice but to recall the star Panther. After lifting the Panthers to an ominous 361 last week, after he crafted a second century of the season, the fast-bowler and his teammates were under a lot of heat when Melbourne skipped out to 3/212, with Seb Gotch, Merrick Buchanan and Blake Thompson threatening to take the game away. Early on in the day, Pattinson snared the first two wickets of Matt Brown (15), caught behind off the sure hands of Tommy Donnell at slips, before trapping Peter Petricola LBW for 17. Gotch (68) and Buchanan (81) dug in for the visitors, playing gutsy knocks despite constant pressure applied by not only Pattinson, but a raft of other bowlers. But with passion, gusto and plenty of extreme pace, Pattinson tore the Demons to shreds, at some stages almost literally, as the opposition meekly fell away, bowled out for 243 - a 7/31 collapse. His other victims, Seb Gotch, Andrew Kent, Jackson Koop and Patrick Smith all looked second-rate, with Patto bringing out his usual trademark celebration. Pattinson finished with figures of 6/43 from 14 overs, but more importantly, never lost his rhythm and found that old mojo once again. The vitally important victory leaves the Panthers comfortably inside the top four. Others to impress for the Panthers were newcomer Patrick Turner (2/45) and the ever-reliable James Nanopoulos (1/47). Dandenong will host the struggling Frankston Peninsula next week at Shepley Oval, with the speculated return of Peter Siddle likely to be a crowd drawer. Meanwhile, Casey-South Melbourne is one-step closer to a shock finals berth, edging out a plucky Greenvale side in North Melbourne. After claiming first-innings points in stunning fashion last week, the Swans batted once again, and this time did enough to stave off any potential reverse-outright result, bowled out for 170 - Nathan Lambden (30) top-scored while Devin Pollock (29), Michael Wallace (20), Lachlan Sperling (21) and Ryan Eaton (21) all good starts. And Brendan Rose gave the Roos a scare late in the day, taking three early wickets to leave them at 3/36 at stumps - Rose took eight wickets for the match and is now the top wicket-taker in the competition. The Swans face Kingston Hawthorn next week at home, with a win securing them a spot in the finals
Rangers unite but the Fire comes out scorching By Nicholas Creely The premiership race has been thrown wide open, with the Dandenong Rangers falling short in a relatively close affair against Townsville at Dandenong Stadium on Saturday night. With very little separating the two sides in regards to their positions on the ladder, the match was always going to be hardly fought, but it was a matter of who was cleaner and more accurate with their shooting. It was a special night for the Rangers, who were dedicating the match to The Unite Project, an organisation looking to help youth who are homeless or struggling to make ends meet. For every $3.50 from the ticket price, the money went to The Unite Project as a way of supporting the cause - and the fans were treated to perhaps a taste of things to come in the finals, with the Fire holding out a slow-finishing Rang-
ers outfit 78-92. From the outset, the Rangers weren’t quite at their best, with the Fire shooting accurately and displaying a lot more energy around the court. And they were powerless to stop Suzy Batkovic from putting on one of the performances of the season, with the champion veteran finishing with 26 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. Sara Blicavs (24 points, 4 rebounds) once again led from the front, while Steph Cumming (16 points) had her moments and Nat Novosel (14 points and seven rebounds) continues to build into finals. Blicavs said despite the result, they will continue to look forward, and praised Batkovic for her stellar performance. “We have the opportunity to play them again next week which is great - I think we played them in November so they’re a completely different team to when we last played them,” she said post-
match. “I’m up for the challenge - it hurts now but we get another chance. “We knew Suzy was a big target - she is unstoppable when she’s going - but we have to defend everyone on the court.” Blicavs was also thrilled with the large turnout to Dandenong, saying that the fans really rallied behind the true meaning of the night. “I was so happy to see everyone come out - a lot of people were wearing black and pink, but we also have had about 45 enquiries to get our fridges into local cafes tonight which is awesome,” she said. The Rangers will have the opportunity to bounce back quickly, as they head on the road to face the Fire once more on Friday night, before a top-table clash with the Sydney Uni Flames the very next night.

There’s nothing that goes quicker than Two Dollar Pots Diners let out an almighty roar on Thursday night as the popular Two Dollar Pots prevailled in race 10 at Sandown Park. Two Dollar Pots flew out of box three and led Fearless John and Kelly Hook down the back straight before holding them both at bay to win by three quarters of a length in 29.71. “He was great tonight. This is his grade, once he creeps up in grade he finds it a bit tougher,“ said trainer Les Hughes following the run. “He’s the best dog I’ve got at the moment -he’s keeping me happy.“ Two Dollar Pots, due to his name, has a huge following at the track and is similarly named to the former Tasmanian galloper Free Beer, who was so named because nothing goes quicker. Two Dollar Pots, or Greg as he is known at home, was bred by Hughes then sold to a longtime friend. “I bred him then sold him to a friend of mine who currently owns him. He’s the owner on paper but he’s got a few friends who are pretty excited about the dog,“ Hughes said.
Owner Greg Elomre wasn’t on track to witness the win due to work committments. “He’s not here tonight as he had to work. He said ’the last he won I wasn’t there , so it’s probably better I’m not there’.“

NPL2 - EAST Dandenong Thunder (4) v Dandenong City (1) Round 1 Review Gee, the Thunder would be counting their lucky stars that Brandon Barnes put pen to paper this season. After the star striker received plenty of outside interest from clubs, including some in the A-League, Barnes eventually recommitted to the cause down at George Andrews Reserve. And he has started the year with a bang, scoring a triple as the Thunder crushed the City in a battle of the heavyweights, while also claiming first points in the Jim Memeti Cup. Both sides have had intriguing off-seasons, with the City signing a raft of exciting players as well as bringing over Stuart Munro as their new coach. While the Thunder have had a disruptive preseason, with coach Giuseppe Anastasi pulling out of his commitment to the club, before swiftly signing the experienced campaigner Gianfranco Impellizzeri to the helm, despite very little preparation. The crowd was vast and loud as the two rivals from Dandy strode out onto the beautiful green turf, and it took until the 41st minute, before Barnes got his first strike into the corner. Just minutes later, Thunder playmaker Tomas Murphy made it 2-0, and with the City’s backs against the wall, it seemed like the stars were aligning for the Thunder. Barnes then scored ten minutes later, after a lovely left-footed pass by the returning Muriqi, with the star striker taking care of business. The City did eventually drag one back through James Kelly, who used his class to put a low ball into the net, before Barnes delivered the killer blow less than a minute later, as the lengthy crowd erupted for the Thunder. New Thunder coach Impellizzeri was proud his team got off to a good start, saying the group
