Some crafty kids The artwork of talented local teenagers will be soon on show, as part of Yarra Ranges Council’s VCE Creative Showcase exhibition opening. The showcase will feature the work from 2016 students’ VCE art and studio art classes in two exhibitions, at Mooroolbark Community Centre’s Red Earth Gallery and Upwey’s Burrinja Cultural Centre. The Mooroolbark exhibition, which runs from 14 February until 27 March, will include student work from Mount Evelyn Christian School, Billanook College, Lilydale Heights College, Lilydale High School and Yarra Hills Secondary College. Feet fight cancer By Jesse Graham An ovarian cancer awareness walk that will pass through Mount Evelyn later this month has already smashed its fund-raising goal, raising more than $14,000 by the end of January. Sue Contarino’s Walk with Me event, which last year saw more than 80 people walk down the Warburton Trail in support of the teacher and ovarian cancer research, raised $12,762 in 2016. Ms Contarino said that, by 31 January this year, more than $14,000 had already been collected, with about 300 people to be involved in the event when it comes around on Sunday, 26 February.
The walk will start at Lilydale Station at 6am, passing through Mount Evelyn at 7.30am and finishing in Warburton at 3.30pm - participants can walk a stretch of the walk or the entirety of the trail, with all profits going to Ovarian Cancer Australia (OCA). This will be the second year that the event is being held, after Ms Contarino was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in November 2013. After treatment, she experienced a recurrence in April 2015. She said she hoped the walk would encourage women to be more aware of the symptoms for ovarian cancer - which are often mistaken for other illnesses - and to ask for a test if concerned.
“They are interchangeable,” she said. “Women’s bloating can be related to too much pasta, breads, carbohydrates ... you could have intolerances, you could have allergies - going to the loo all the time is simply drinking lots, and being tired? Well, most women are tired, whether they’re working or with their children, and pain around that area of the abdomen is associated with wind or irritable bowel syndrome. “So there’s a lot of reasons why women tend to turn a blind eye, and doctors don’t push it - this is why I’m trying to wake up women to ask the question, ‘Can we do a test, please?’.” After last year’s event, Ms Contarino said two sisters from Queensland
SEPTIC TANK
got in contact to share their story of losing their third sister to ovarian cancer. The two will be flying down to Victoria to take part in the walk, tagteaming the 42-kilometre stretch with their husbands under the team banner of Mary’s Marathon. BankVic, which last year gave Ms Contarino their Community Hero Award, is also matching dollar-fordollar donations raised by their staff members taking part in the walk. “There are people who are amazing, and especially in the beautiful Yarra Ranges and the Yarra Valley - people who want to give,” she said. Ms Contarino said she hoped to start a Walk with Me event in every
state by next year, to raise awareness and the profile of the cancer. “We’ve already had a huge, huge amount put in," she said. “In the long-term, I would love it to go as big as breast cancer, children’s cancers or leukaemia - but we’re only little fish. “Because the stats are one in 75 women, people just don’t hear about it as much as breast cancer - the stats are lower, your chances of getting it are lower - but the trouble is, when you get it, your chances of survival are much lower.“ For more information, to donate or to register, visit www.walkwithme4oca.com

Toy library gets facelift The Mount Evelyn Community Toy Library has unveiled its new look, after substantial renovations were completed recently. The re-opening took place on Thursday 2 February, with many residents taking up the opportunity to check out the handy work. Bronwyn Ward, from the toy library, said there had been much work behind the scenes to get the project up and running. “We are a 100 per cent volunteer run organisation and rely on our members to help run the library,” she said. “We have been working really hard to fund-raise this year, so we can do these much-needed renovations and purchase new and exciting toys for the library. “The library is an important part of our community. “It brings local families together and provides them with a valuable resource.” ‘Mail’ photographer Greg Carrick took a sneak peek at the fantastic renovations.

In brief Cop car punched A Ferntree Gully man has been charged with drink driving and assault, among other charges, after threatening to shoot officers who caught him intoxicated at the wheel. Olinda Police officers were called out to Burkes Lookout car park in Osprey Road, with reports that an allegedly heavily intoxicated man was driving dangerously at 7pm on Tuesday, 31 January. Officers intercepted the man, a 44-year-old, as he tried to leave. Leading Senior Constable Geoff Long said the man was co-operative with police until he was advised that he had returned a positive reading to a preliminary breath test. The man punched the police vehicle, threatened the officers and lunged for one of their firearms, threatening to shoot them both. Officers used capsicum spray to subdue the man before wrestling him to the ground and handcuffing him. Leading Sen Const Long said he was “stunned” by the change in the man’s behaviour. “It was certainly a situation that escalated very quickly,” he said. “We were very pleased that a member of the public had made the effort to call this job in. “The driver was very unsteady and irrational - he would have been an extreme danger to other road users had he been able to leave the car park.” The man was charged with drink driving, assaults and behavioural offences, and was bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 4 May. Charges over lighting fires Two Yarra Ranges men are expected to face court after lighting fires during a Total Fire Ban on Monday, 30 January. Police officers posting on the Eyewatch - Yarra Ranges Police Service Area Facebook page said police and CFA crews were notified of two illegal burn-offs in Macclesfield and Woori Yallock on 30 January. Both fires were allegedly lit in metal containers, with refuse and garden waste burned. Open air fires are completely prohibited during Total Fire Ban days. “Ignorance is no excuse and offenders may be liable to serious penalties,” the Facebook post read. 12337519-ACM06-17

Call to help RSL fight on The Upwey-Belgrave RSL is receiving community support, as the fight continues to save the venue. However much more is required before its ongoing viability can be secured. The committee of management will decide on whether to close the doors to the beloved venue after this year’s Anzac Day services. The decision will hinge on the reception from the community in the coming months. After going public with the RSL’s challenges early last month, Treasurer Beth Quilty said the response to date had been encouraging, but much hard work lay ahead. “Your article has generated a lot of interest in the RSL, with members of the community who have not been to the RSL previously coming in to try us out,” she said. “I hope that we will be able to capitalise on this renewed interest.” If the response isn’t deemed strong enough, there exists a real possibility management may be turned over to the head body, RSL House. If this occurs, RSL House may consider introducing pokie machines to the venue. To help the fight for viability, the RSL has revived its bistro which has been rebranded ‘Poppies’, a symbol synonymous with the RSL. The decor is bright and inviting,
with friendly staff and a world-class executive chef overseeing the menu and operations in the kitchen. The menu has been totally revised with the introduction of ‘seniors’ meals and the return of old favourites, like roast of the day, chicken schnitzel and old-fashioned fish‘n’chips. In addition, the RSL is also home to the Running Rabbits museum. Also taking up the fight is Yarra Ranges Mayor Noel Cliff who has put up his hand to work behind the bar on a Friday. The RSL says there are many ways people can help. Bring family and friends to the bistro for a meal; Don’t forget morning tea and lunch - a lighter and cheaper menu at lunchtime is available; Meet friends at the RSL for a drink after work; Offer assistance for fundraising activities such as raffles; It also needs urgent help with the marketing of the RSL; Support special events and music nights; Use the boardroom for association/work meetings. There is no charge for community groups and small donations are requested for businesses; Make a donation to the RSL; Spread the word that the RSL needs support from the whole community.

Neglect our SES unit no longer The state of
affairs Brad Battin MP
Member for Gembrook
Emerald SES is one of Victoria’s busiest, answering more than 1300 calls for help last year alone. But now the Emerald SES is calling for help - and Daniel Andrews and James Merlino simply are not listening. New funds are desperately needed to upgrade the current unit, which is housed in a leaky tin shed that fails to meet SES safety standards. Conditions are so poor that the unit can’t provide its volunteers with hot meals between callouts and antiquated systems hamper response times. To make matters worse, the workload of the station is growing fast and new facilities are badly needed. Portable toilets, a makeshift
workshop and old shipping crates have all been added to the site to help meet the community’s needs, but it’s not enough. Estimates suggest the unit will need to double the number of volunteers to meet demand, an undertaking the poor condition of the unit just won’t allow. This is not new, it is something I have been campaigning for alongside the Emerald SES for the past two years, following the Andrews government’s decision not to honour the Coalition Government’s $1.8 million commitment to upgrade the unit. To this day, the Minister for Emergency Services James Merlino has failed to commit a single cent for the upgrade. Emergency Services Minister James Merlino, a local MP representing a community that benefits the work of the Emerald SES, continues to neglect the call, and the community has taken notice. The volunteers of the Emerald SES, their colleagues in the
CFA and the local community have made it clear that a new unit is desperately needed and well overdue. My office has received more than 1000 requests from local people demanding that the unit be given the facilities it need to protect the community. Volunteers of the Emerald SES and the community, who depend on their help, are counting on the Andrews government to provide the money they so desperately need to upgrade their unit. Daniel Andrews and James Merlino must commit to funding a new unit for Emerald SES in this state budget. I can only hope they do not disappoint. It’s completely unfair that our volunteers, who answer more than 7 per cent of the state’s callouts, are forced to work in unsafe facilities. The Andrews government and James Merlino must not allow the neglect of the Emerald SES to continue any longer.

Bast best in carving comp Some of the best national and international chainsaw carvers descended on Mount Dandenong recently for the Australian Chainsaw Carving Championships. Though, self-taught Wandin sculptor Robbie Bast trumped all-comers, with his incredible piece called ‘The Man from Snowy River’, which was
awarded the $3000 first prize on Saturday 21 January. Even more incredibly, Bast also picked up the people’s choice award. Over the championships, the chainsaw sculptors carve out intricate pieces, creating incredible pieces of artwork that need to be seen to be believed. Also picking up prizes were
Jeff Samudosky, who picked up the $2000 second place with his carving called ‘The Dance’. Japan’s Kikaru Kodama picked up the $1000 third prize, with his piece called ‘Elders with family’. ‘Mail’ photographer Greg Carrick was on hand to capture all the action.

Our top senior citizen
Letters Getting it straight
By Peter Douglas Long-time Emerald volunteer Mike Allery says his recent Australia Day honour is largely due to working with so many fantastic people. After receiving Cardinia Shire’s Senior Citizen Award for 2017, Mr Allery said he owed a great deal to the many dedicated volunteers he had worked with. Mr Allery said volunteering was a great way to meet top people. “There are too many to name, but we’re all mates and they’ve been a pleasure to work with,” he said. “I’m definitely not in it for the awards ... being a volunteer isn’t hard work if you enjoy it.” Mr Allery said receiving the award was a humbling experience, particularly due to the regard in which he held other nominees. “When I looked at the other nominees, there were two in a wheelchair and another who needed a walking stick, yet they all found time to give so much to their community,” he said. Mr Allery was acknowledged for his work with youth at Emerald Secondary College, as well as co-ordinating the Emerald Men’s Shed for almost a decade. Through his involvement in the Men’s Shed, he has assisted many local groups including SES, RSL, Fernlea House and NHP Museum. Over the years, Mr Allery said he had enjoyed many rewarding volunteering efforts, but one stand-out was the level of community assistance offered during Black Saturday in 2009. With the help of the U3A, he
I wish to respond to the article about the yellow arrows painted in Birdsland, ‘Yellow arrows plague bush’ (Mail, 24 January, 2017). I am trying to fathom why people orienteering have been accused of causing this senseless damage. The parkland is used for a large number of activities by, as stated in the article, hundreds of people. Only a very small percentage of these walkers, runners and bike riders are orienteering. Orienteering is navigating using a map, compass and your brain. Having routes premarked, such as arrows showing the way to go, would defeat the whole purpose of this activity. Birdsland has not been used for any official orienteering event for a few years but permission to use the parkland, or the adjoining Lysterfield Park, for an organised event is always required. I do not believe that anyone who thinks it acceptable to vandalise the parkland would go through the correct channels and obtain a permit before use. Pamela King, Boronia.
Mike Allery being congratulated by U3A President Mal Bowmaker. 164468 remembers helping to organise the donations of much-needed equipment for the people of Marysville, such as generators and woodworking tools. “That’s something that really stands out in my mind, just due to the high level of community supports - it was really amazing to see,” he said.
Fellow U3A member Paul Bianco said Mr Allery thoroughly deserved the award. “Mike was president of the U3A for five years and a great deal of our present success is due to him,” he said. “His work with the Emerald Men’s Shed is legendary.”
Meanwhile, hard-working citizen Wayne Collins was named Cardinia Shire Council’s Citizen of the Year. Since establishing the Emerald Centre for Youth and Outreach (ECHO) more than 30 years ago, Mr Collins has dedicated himself to improving the lives of others.
Trumped up I just knew that the socalled deal between
America and Australia concerning refugees would never come to fruition. How sad to get their hopes up. Blind Freddie could see it would never work; better to have said nothing until it was in the bag (so to speak). The TPP trashed and more to come. I watch (Donald Trump) and I think, is he for real? And why does he have to have the vice-president on hand all the time? I wonder, even at this early stage, how many Americans are regretting their vote? I am sad. Val Butler, Cockatoo.
What emergency? Not long ago the Federal Government was saying we have a budget emergency. Despite this, in midDecember they proposed using $1 billion of taxpayers’ money to prop up the controversial Adani Carmichael coal mine proposed for central Queensland. As taxpayers, we should all be appalled. It’s madness that the government could consider a taxpayer handout for tax-dodging Adani, especially given that it is under investigation for fraud and money laundering back in India. Peter Cook, Clematis.

Top art from hills scene By Jesse Graham The work of talented Yarra Ranges teenagers is being presented throughout February and March, with the council’s VCE Creative Showcase exhibition opening in coming weeks. The showcase will feature the work from 2016 students’ VCE art and studio art classes in two exhibitions, at Mooroolbark Community Centre’s Red Earth Gallery and Upwey’s Burrinja Cultural Centre. The Mooroolbark exhibition, which runs from 14 February until 27 March, will have work from Billanook College, Healesville High School, Lilydale Heights College, Lilydale High School, Little Yarra Steiner School, Mount Evelyn Christian School and Yarra Hills Secondary College students. The Upwey exhibition, which will run from 18 February to 19 March, will have work from Belgrave Heights Christian School, Emergald Secondary College, Mater Christi College, Monbulk College, Mountain District Christian School, Sherbrooke Community School, St Joseph’s College and Upwey High School. The Mail received a preview of the show from five exhibiting students on Tuesday, 31 January - film photographer and former-Monbulk College student, Josh Starick, will display his film photography work. “The theme was lost,” he said. “Silver gelatin (printing) is a medium that’s sort of been lost over time, I guess. “Not so much now,” he added. Mr Starick, who hopes to do a Bachelor of Fine Arts at university, said his work was “experimental”, and used an enlarger in a darkroom to layer his photos.
MECS student, Rachel Wilson, will also display photography work, though hers was shot digitally and uses a woman in a wedding dress in dark environments to explore the idea of reality. “It’s kind of like, within the ugly world, people create a beautiful situation,” she said. Little Yarra student, Rebecca André, meanwhile, used resin, acrylic paint and spray paint to create pieces to resemble water in its different forms, and display its importance.” “I was looking for something that was really universal ... and I thought water really fitted that, because we all use it every day for heaps of things, and it’s so important for life and the economy, and religion and culture,” she said. “In the first world, we don’t really think about it - we turn on the tap and it comes out. “You’re not really conscious of it, so I really just tried to impart its importance and its beauty.” MDCS’ Belinda Schroder will exhibit her fine art pieces, created using watercolour, pen and paper - her intricate works, often depicting faces, discuss the idea of hidden thoughts. “Basically, how you keep your deepest thoughts, and things like that, to yourself,” she said. “I especially ... value that privacy and the actual action of revealing, concealing the on-goings of your mind.” Upwey student Sam Sharam, will display light boxes made using coloured resin, which will project light into the exhibition space. She added a personal side to the works, drawing inspiration, composition or colours from photos she had taken at the beach to create the boxes.

Ending all the pain, for good Foot and Leg Pain Clinics, one of Australia’s leading musculoskeletal podiatry practices, is having enormous success assisting pain, injuries and degenerative concerns. Help is just around the corner for those who are suffering from heel pain, arch pain, plantar fasciitis, knee pain, ankle/ Achilles concerns, shin pain, bunions, arthritis, injuries or children’s and teenagers’ growing pains. Foot and Leg Pain Clinics have successfully assist-
ed tens of thousands of people of all ages and lifestyles, from children to athletes and seniors. They take an holistic approach and provide evidencebased treatment plans which are aimed at ending foot and leg pain once and for all. Renowned for their successful patient outcomes, Foot and Leg Pain Clinics services are sought from far and wide. They’ve been the chosen podiatrists for some of the world’s
best athletes - individuals who have set world records, won Olympic gold medals - and other ordinary members of the public. They’ve assisted people who’ve suffered for years, those who’ve been told that nothing can be done for them and helped others avoid medications and surgery. Musculoskeletal podiatrist Dr Tim Kirwan, who heads the Wantirna clinic, said: “Health and healing is not a one-size-fits-all approach.
“We achieve consistent, successful and long-term outcomes for patients because we take an individual approach considering patients’ lifestyle, overall health and injury concerns, nutritional status and requirements, and we spend time find-
ing and addressing the cause of concerns and not just treating the symptoms. “We also take a holistic approach, keep up to date with the latest medical research and treatments and have expertise in regenerative therapies such as
Prolotherapy and PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma).” Anyone with foot and leg pain injuries, or degenerative concerns, can visit Foot and Leg Pain Clinics in Wantirna by calling 1300 328 300.

When anything goes By Peter Douglas After nearly 40 years of recording and non-stop touring, legendary Aussie pop-band Mental as Anything is as strong as ever. Their next stop, Belgrave’s Sooki Lounge. The band emerged in the late 1970s and grew a legion of followers, thanks to their enormously popular hit songs, as well as a select group of covers including a Chuck Berry classic. Not only did the band achieve many hit singles, its music also featured in hit ’80s films such as Crocodile Dundee and Young Einstein. In 2009 the band was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame. Band mainstays Martin Plaza and Greedy Smith are always writing songs, which means there will be plenty of new material for fans, as well as the classics. The latest offering is a five-track MP featuring the Mentals’ current line-up of Greedy Smith, Martin Cilia from the Atlantics on guitar, Jacob Cook on drums and James Gillard (Mondo Rock, Casey Chambers). The five songs are written by Greedy and Martin, which show the range and depth of ‘two lifetimes’ in pop songwriting.
Among the 2017 program is 'Exposing Edith, The Songs and life of Edith Piaf' 163053

Perfect pitch for split personalities Split Starring James McAvoy and Anya Taylor-Joy Rated M Once the laughing stock of Hollywood, M. Night Shyamalan is back in fine form with Split, his best film since Unbreakable. Three teenagers are abducted by Kevin (James McAvoy), a man suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder (commonly known as Multiple Personality Disorder) who has 23 distinct identities in his head. Split is a taut, confronting thriller with multi-layered characters. McAvoy delivers a tour-de-
force performance as Kevin. As the focal point of the film, McAvoy makes every personality defined and shifts effortlessly between them, conveying palpable menace, warmth and even awkward humour wherever appropriate. If he doesn’t get an Oscar nomination next year, then there’s something seriously wrong with the Academy’s standards. Split isn’t just a tense catand-mouse game between Kevin and Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy), the main kidnap victim. The film is also a compelling power struggle, as Kevin’s two dominant person-
alities, Dennis and Patricia, conspire to keep the other personalities subdued and plot to awaken the ‘Beast’, the deadly 24th personality. The film has an eerie, claustrophobic atmosphere and Taylor-Joy is engaging as the resourceful, tenacious Casey. The pacing is excellent, superbly weaving poignant flashbacks into the present conflict, and the climactic twist is genuinely surprising and clever. Split is a truly excellent thriller and a great resurgence in Shyamalan’s career. - Seth Lukas Hynes

Town loses link to past Last month, Upwey identity Jim Chitts passed away, aged 98 years of age. Born in February 1918, Jim lived all his life at Upwey. His family connections go back to the earliest days of present-day Upwey. Jim was a great-grandson of Henry Morris (who selected 320 acres of land in the 1860s), and he was the last Morris descendant living in Upwey - a link spanning 160 years. Jim and his older brother, Charlie, along with their younger siblings, attended the Belgrave School (now Tecoma Primary School), riding their pony, Dolly, bareback to school each day. It was the school where their mother, uncles, aunties and cousins were among the first intake of pupils in 1896. Jim was a keen student and eager to learn. He later transferred to the Upper Ferntree Gully School. Last year, Jim was honoured to attend the centenary celebration of the Upper Ferntree Gully Primary School, being the oldest ex-student attending. After completing his schooling, Jim started working with his father and brother Charlie at the Chitts’ market garden. Jim’s father was an expert grower and a progressive businessman. He established a seed-harvesting business, supplying the larger market gardens at Wheelers Hill. The position of the Chitts’ farm was fortuitous because their isolation prevented cross-pollination. They had an all-year-round business. After World War II broke out, Jim, aged 23, was called up to serve in 1941. After training, he served in Signals

James David Chitts, 1918-2016 and Radio Operations at Lae and Bougainville, Papua New Guinea. Discharged in 1946, Jim returned home to work beside his father and Charlie. The years rolled on and one day Jim’s mother had a talk to her three sons and told them “your father and I are getting on and we won’t be around forever. You boys need to get married.” So Jim asked his next door neighbour, Betty Smart, who lived with her widowed mother.
Charlie proposed to Kath Grant, a war widow with two daughters. Alec asked Merle, a lady from Gippsland. The result was that the three boys all got married in 1959, each of them marrying one month apart. Charlie built a new house opposite the family home, and Jim moved in next door with Betty and her mother a hop, step and a jump from Mum and Dad!

Alec went to live at Foster. The Upwey family lived happily within 500 yards of each other. After the death of their parents in the late 1960s, Jim and Charlie continued working the market garden, selling the family property in the 1970s. But retirement didn’t suit them, and they told the new owners they had nothing to do! With the owners’ permission, they kept growing vegetables, fruit and flowers on a smaller scale on the property and worked the farm just as they always had, delivering armfuls of vegetables to neighbours, family and friends. The Chitts were an integral part of the community, and those who didn’t know them certainly recognised them, especially when seeing them driving their ex-American Army, left-handdrive Jeep with the quaint hand giving the stop and turning signals on the opposite side to the driver! After Charlie and Jim’s wife Betty passed away, Jim was respectfully and attentively supported by his wonderful neighbours and friends.
He continued growing all his vegetables and attending to his chooks, living independently. He was informed and self-sufficient, and had plenty of company. In recent years, Jim suffered a serious heart attack, but with expert medical attention - and the love and attention of his step-niece, family and friends - he was encouraged to keep going. He was soon back in his veggie patch, still supplying others with fresh veggies and looking after himself. He had a few stints in respite care, but he was always keen to get home again. While body was growing feeble, he never gave up and remained alert and interested in his surroundings, but he was simply fading. Eventually he decided it was time to go into care, and two weeks later he died peacefully in his sleep at Wheelers Hill. He had lived an interesting life with a loving family and friends, and he will be remembered with the respect that he deserves.

Tigers just get tamed By Steve Brown Upwey-Tecoma had a fall from grace when they were demolished for just 89 in perfect batting conditions at the weekend, completing round 10 of the Norm Reeves Shield. Set 239 the previous week by Upper Ferntree Gully, the Tigers were in serious trouble early in the day, being five-for not many and simply could not recover. Upper Gully’s Todd Burley, the spearhead of the association in Country Week, continued his brilliant form, snaring 4/28; and he received support at the other end from Jay Colee with 3/24. Ferntree Gully collected another win, this time at the expense of Belgrave. The Blues lost only three wickets in pursuit of 222, with the ground work done by opener Harrison Brown (83) and Jayden Bradbury (56).
The pair added 98 for the second wicket as the Magpies attack could not break through. An unbeaten century to Knoxfield’s Trent Scholfield helped the Knights easily account for Mt Gate by 110 runs. Talented top-order batsman Jack Taylor (76) and Tom Boxell with 50 signalled to the rest of the competition that they meant business at the pointy end of the season. Monbulk’s 299 gave The Basin a scare, going down by 44 runs at Monbulk Recreation Reserve. Chris Coen batted for most of the day, reaching 105, while work-horse Scott Vozzo bowled 19 overs for a return of 3/76 and took four catches. Monbulk have been more than competitive with the bat this season, and have been let down by the bowling attack. Eildon Park opening batsman Cody Morris continued to dominate the com-
petition as he peeled off his third century for the season, this time against Knox Gardens. Chasing a modest 161, the Panthers were 3/193 when Morris reached his ton, and he decided that the Falcons had seen enough of him for the day, pulling stumps early. Morris has now amassed more than 500 runs for the season. In Decoite Shield, Olinda scored their second win of the season against St John’s Tecoma with nine wickets in hand. Adrian Willoughby remained 110no for the Bloods in a terrific knock. Matt Sunderland blasted a century for South Belgrave against Rowville securing a win by three wickets. Johnson Park had reason to celebrate their 50th year when they downed top side Footballers with off-spinner Steve Devenish taking 5/50 and Lysterfield was too powerful for Knoxfield.
Norm Reeves Shield Ferntree Gully 3/225 (Brown 83, Bradbury 56, Galvin 38no) d Belgrave 9/222; Upper Ferntree Gully 239 d Upwey-Tecoma 89 (T. Burley 4/28, J. Colee 3/24); Knoxfield 6/313 (Scholfield 100no, Taylor 76, Boxell 50, Sundaresh 31) d Mountain Gate 203; The Basin 6/343 d Monbulk 299 (Coen 105); Eildon Park 3/193 (C. Morris 101no) d Knox Gardens 161. Decoite Shield Johnson Park 237 d Footballers 186 (N. Bogar 62, S. Coen ton not enough to make it Monbulk 1st XI vice-captain Chris Coen made his third century in the ones with a 105 on Saturday against The Basin. Musa Shirwani (67) and Jason Fraser (42) also batted well to help the team to 299, but was unfortunately not enough chasing The Basin’s 343. Well batted also to under-16s player Thomas Badgery, who made his first half-century for the club with a 55 in the thirds. More runs to ‘Spooner’, ‘Fenby’ and ‘the Raks’ helped the fifths to another good win. Some great results, also, to the Monbulk juniors, with half-centuries to Tom Berman and Tam Noonan in the under-16s Maroon team; and to Jett Bolton in the under-13s win. The highlight of the round, though, occurred in the under-16s Gold team with a record junior opening partnership of 225 (unbroken) between Ben Grimes and TJ Utting (pictured), who both scored their maiden centuries, each finishing on 100no. The team finished 281 for no loss also a junior club record. No training on Tuesday 7 February for the seniors or under-16s, but instead we will be heading to the Watering Hole Tavern, 5.30pm arrival for a pool, darts competition and meal. Weekend scores: The Basin 6/343 d 1st XI - Monbulk 299 (C. Coen 105, M. Shirwani 67, J. Fraser 42); 2nd XI - The Basin 3/168 d Monbulk 164; 3rd XI - South Belgrave 226 (S. Gully goes down, just The Ferntree Gully and District Cricket Association performed brilliantly during the VCCL Country Week carnival held in Melbourne. Playing off in Division 2, the Gully secured wins against South West CA, Shepparton CA, Sunraysia CA and Yarra Valley CA before taking on the mighty Murray Valley in the final on Friday at Williamstown. Murray Valley, batting first, posted 9/237 from 50 overs and in reply the Gully were in trouble early at 3/18, only to go down by just nine runs in the end. Knoxfield’s Jack Taylor topscored in the final with 89, while Upper Fern Tree Gully spearhead Todd Burley was the standout bowler for the week. Another highlight was Tom Boxell’s century on Thursday against Yarra Valley. Murray Valley will be promoted to Provincial with Bendigo CA relegated to Division 2 next season.

Monbulk bowls results
Four teams make it By Jamie Strudley Yarra Ranges Athletics is excited about the opportunity presented to four of their teams which have qualified to compete in the Athletics Victoria (AV) Shield Finals next Sunday at Lakeside Stadium. Teams qualified by finishing first or second in their zone based on competitions held since October 2016. Open Men and Open Women will compete in Division 2 competition against clubs from throughout Victoria. The Men’s team will hope to finish higher than the third placing from last year, similarly the Open Women team finished sixth in last year’s final. The Mens under-16s and Womens under-16s go into final with big expectations after a very promising season and a host of talented athletes. They will compete against some of Victoria’s powerhouse clubs including Box Hill, Diamond Valley and Western Athletics. The competition awards points based on each individual athletes result in the event selected to compete in. Winning a race or event does not guarantee high points scored, so effort and endeavour are essential. A large, vocal team of supporters will ensure all athletes give their best. The little athletics competition was highlighted by a relay that ran continuously around the track to raise funds for the Royal Children's Hospital, all while other events were going on. The special RCH baton travelled a total of 31.5km.
Bradley Walker leads the pack in the under 10s Boys 400m race. 164550 Well done and thanks to all the athletes and parents who donated their pocket money and ran a lap or three to keep the baton moving. Next week is a choose-your-ownevent day, an opportunity to record a personal best a week out from EMR
Region Championships. A maximum of four events per athlete with an early 8am start for those wanting to do javelin or long hurdles. The club welcomes all athletes of any age or ability.
Picture: ERIKA BEDYN Throughout February, the club will have a special offer to all school athletes wanting to join including a significantly reduced membership price. For more information, contact the club at info@yarrarangesathletics. org.au.

Playing at Croydon in stifling heat, the team pulled out an awesome victory after being 20-plus shots down at the halfway mark. This now sets up a great chance to have a real crack in the finals. Four matches to go, and sitting in fourth position with a game a bit in front of fifth. Great effort everyone! Div.4 - Monbulk v Moroolbark - d 7783 Tough day away for the Div.4 team. Playing away, this was a good result, getting within six shots of victory. Good effort and would be great to get a couple of wins on the way home. Div. 8 - Monbulk v Heatherdale Rec won 47-14 The Div. 8 team had a great win, restricting the opposition to just 14 shots for the day. This win has kept them in second place, which is where they would love to be at the end of the home and away matches in four weeks, which would secure a home final. Keep up the good work, guys.
