Not many six-year-olds save $2000, let alone crowdfund and donate the money to help the homeless. Rebekah, now 7, pictured, had her conscience sparked after hearing about homelessness on the car radio last year. “I wanted to help people who don’t have shelter,” she said. The Berwick year two student’s donation has purchased about 20 purpose-built swags to distribute at Casey North Community Information and Support Service in Narre Warren. Her next fundraising effort will involve selling bath bombs.

John Foy’s home remains his castle after Casey Council sensationally dropped plans to compulsorily acquire his Narre Warren North property. Supporters cheered from the council’s public gallery on Tuesday 7 February as Mayor Sam Aziz announced the council would “forever” abandon plans to convert the 78-year-old widower’s house, gardens and habitat wetland into soccer fields. In a nod to the stress caused to Mr Foy, Casey Council will pay for a replacement hot water system at his 34-acre home at 191-195 BelgraveHallam Road. A stunned Mr Foy had been reluctant to replace the recently-broken system, given his possible expulsion in the near future. He credited the outcome to a 9000-plus signature online petition and viral social media in recent days fuelled by a TV news report on 5 February. “I think all the electronic devices got to them,” said Mr Foy - who doesn’t have a Facebook account himself. “I’d just like to thank everybody,” he said as his supporters hugged and kissed him. “It’s starting to get to me,” he added, grasping a DVD of the Australian classic film The Castle. As Cr Aziz shook his hand, Mr Foy said it had been a “bit of a battle” since Casey first inquired about his land in 2002. During that time, he’d knocked back a council offer of $1.45 million for his land, insisting on protection of his pet dog cemetery and “all the little critters” inhabiting the wildlife lake and gardens he created over the past 35 years. “Hopefully the nightmare goes away tonight,” Cr Aziz told Mr Foy. Peterine Smulders, a neighbour of Mr Foy, held a rolled-up protest banner and tearfully declared it was a “miracle”. Another neighbour Marlene Kane - who fought the David-and-Goliath contest for several months - said: “I didn’t think it was going to happen.” Mr Foy’s daughter Cindy said her father would be greatly relieved. “It’s been a bit of a toll on the whole family. “He will be giving a big sigh.” Cr Aziz told the meeting that councillors had to “act with compassion” but insisted he did not bow to political pressure or the “insulting remarks” on Facebook. Cr Aziz declared it would be a “cold day in hell under my mayoralty” before the council overrode the needs of Mr Foy and his “sentimental” attachment to his property. “If you were my father or grandfather, I certainly wouldn’t want you to be in this position. Grandma’s theft spree By Cam Lucadou-Wells A grandmother on holiday from China went on a stealing spree of hundreds of handbags, shoes, vitamins, cosmetics and jocks, a court was told on 6 February. She and her daughter Qiuyu Zhang, 40, of Lynbrook, had been arrested at Fountain Gate shopping centre on 7 July after stealing $620 of clocks, men’s underpants, ladies shoes and clothing and a handbag from Big W. At Zhang’s home - where the grandmother had stayed since May - police seized a vast array of suspected stolen goods, including 284 items of vitamins, perfumes, cosmetics, medicines, ointments and sunscreen. Other seized goods included two bags of costume jewellery, eight pairs of ladies shoes, 34 pairs of slippers and 39 handbags in the grandmother’s bedroom. The items were brand-new, apparently unused, often in their original packaging and few account-
ed for by receipts, according to a police summary. They were stored in a variety of bags, suitcases and wardrobes. The court wasn’t given an estimated value of the stolen goods. The grandmother had been staying at Zhang’s home since May, and has since returned to China. After finding an international freight receipt, police believed the grandmother and her daughter may have already shipped stolen cosmetics and clothing to China. In a police interview, Zhang blamed her mother for stealing much of the loot, but admitted she was fully aware the goods were stolen. At Dandenong Magistrates’ Court, Zhang faced charges of shoplifting and dealing with proceeds of crime and suspected stolen property. Defence barrister Richard Lawson described Zhang and her husband as hard-working migrants, with three children and a significant mortgage. “It reached a point when (Zhang) knew her mum was shoplifting and did nothing about it -
In Brief Appeal for girl
and made a bad situation worse.” Mr Lawson said he didn’t think the grandmother would return to Australia after coming to attention of immigration authorities. He conceded the court would be “generous” if it didn’t convict Zhang. Magistrate Barry Schultz said there had been “serious and protracted theft” but took into account Zhang’s “difficult personal, moral situation”. Mr Schultz said Zhang nevertheless should have tried to stop the thefts continuing. He imposed no conviction “with some reluctance” but said - despite police beliefs - there was no evidence some of the stolen goods were being sent to China for profit. Mr Schultz took into account Zhang’s early guilty plea, admissions, no prior convictions and the return of up to 90 per cent of the property. Zhang was fined $1500, and the unrecovered property was variously forfeited to the State Government or destroyed.
Police are asking for the public’s assistance to locate missing 14-year-old Sha’arn Winslett who was last seen in Hallam on Friday 20 January. She is described as Caucasian in appearance, with a thin build, about 156cm tall, shoulder length dark brown hair and facial piercings. Sha’arn is known to frequent Dandenong as well as Frankston, Seaford, Melbourne CBD, and Point Cook. Her family and police are concerned for her welfare considering her young age and the length of time she has been missing. Information to Dandenong Police Station on 9767 7444.
More jobs with grant A Hallam manufacturer plans to create 14 local jobs with the help of a $200,000 state grant. Eco Garage Doors will use the Local Industry Fund for Transition grant to upgrade equipment which will allow it to make better single-skin doors at cheaper cost. As a result, it expects to employ seven retrenched automotive workers among the extra 14 in the first 18 months. The $33 million fund is still open for expressions of interest.
Man wanted over assault Police are calling for information about a man they want to speak to in relation to an allegedly sexual assault on a 10-year-girl at Fountain Gate Shopping Centre on Princes Highway, Narre Warren, about 3.15pm on Wednesday 28 December. He is described as in his 60s and of European or Middle Eastern appearance. He was wearing a light-coloured baseball cap, a green T-shirt with a black panel across the back, dark shorts with fluoro panels and grey and black sneakers. Information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Men’s needs in clear focus under one shed’s roof Contrary to popular opinion, men’s shed members don’t have to be retired and don’t have to do woodwork - but it doesn’t hurt if they can tell a yarn and have a laugh. Would-be members of many ages mingled and male-bonded at Endeavour Hills Men’s Shed’s first meeting on 9 February. John Cooper, the shed’s chairman, said it’s up to the members to decide what happens at the shed. It’s a chance to pursue or lean about diverse endeavours such as photography, cycling, walking, computing, train-model making or trades. “It’s whatever the fellas are interested in,” Mr Cooper said. According to its mission statement, the men’s
shed is a safe place for men to work on meaningful projects at their own pace and in the company of other men. “Men’s health is really the reason why they were created,” Mr Cooper said. “It’s a chance for men to get together - and tell bulls*** and lies,” he chuckled. Peter Ramsbotham of Keysborough said he was interested in being part of a community, though stressing he had no interest in woodwork. Another interested visitor Stephen Mayes was impressed by the men’s shed run by his father in NSW. “I was quite interested in getting out and meeting other guys and building a bit of a community.” Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills members, with the support of City of Casey, are initially administering the group, with a view to letting the

shed members take the reins. Donated tools, including a lathe, have already arrived and a space has been has been set aside for a workshop inside Essex Park Community Place. Mr Cooper said there was scope to add a further shed outdoors, if required. The initiative had been championed by former Casey councillor Rafal Kaplon. The Endeavour Hills Men’s Shed is at Essex Park Community Place, 16 Essex Park Drive, Endeavour Hills, and is open on Tuesdays from 10am to noon. Next week’s guest speaker is Frank Hammond who will talk on growing fruit trees. Details from coops46@bigpond.com or 0419 597 102.
Police have called for witnesses after two 23-yearold men were robbed at gunpoint after withdrawing money from a Commonwealth Bank ATM in Lonsdale Street, Dandenong, about 9.45pm on Saturday 21 January. They drove to Weller Street and were approached by two men who had been standing beside a white four-wheel drive LandCruiser. One of the robbers, wearing a black mask, pulled out a black handgun and stole their wallets. The victims drove off and the robbers followed them for a short time. Police want anyone who may have witnessed the incident to call Dandenong CIU on 9767 7444 or make an anonymous report to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Looking Back
Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society
100 years ago 15 February 1917 The late Captain Kennedy The many friends of the late Captain A H Kennedy, who died of pneumonia on 26 August 1916 while a prisoner of war at Gottingen in Germany, will be interested in the further particulars that have come to hand. On 28 July he was blown up by a shell into a crater while leading his men at Pozieres. The charge commenced at 12am so it was quite dark. He was wounded in the ankle and we are told he crawled on his back in the hope of getting to safety, but fell into German hands. For 10 days he was moved from place to place until finally placed at Gottingen. (Captain Kennedy was originally believed to have been killed by the blast but wrote to his wife in August telling her that he was a prisoner at Gottingen.)
Everyone in the camp seems to have been good to him - he was amongst Canadians and had a Russian doctor. Mrs Kennedy has had letters from strangers in different parts of the world telling her about the funeral. All the allies sent wreaths and the Germans a firing party and band. His brigade commander, Jellibrand, wrote about his grand work and stated that he (Capt Kennedy) had been mentioned in despatches.
50 years ago 9 February 1967 President Carl throws out a challenge Striking hard in his first official speech for 1967, Red Legs president Carl Downard threw the gauntlet down to players, official and supporters, and challenged them to back new coach Alan Morrow to the utmost. Addressing the club’s annual meeting he
said: “Simply because Alan Morrow is wearing Dandenong colours does not mean we will win games.” Alan Morrow, speaking in the same vein as president Carl, said that he would demand compulsory attendance at footy practice from Tuesday 14 March and thereafter.
20 years ago 10 February 1997 Born on Australia Day Zachary Woller, the third son of Heather and Geffrey Woller, of Tattler Street, Carrum Downs, chose a most appropriate and memorable day to be born - Australia Day. He had the honour of being the first baby to put in an appearance at the hospital. His arrival at 1.30am on 26 January brought joy to not only his proud parents but to the hospital staff.
5 years ago 13 February 2012 Digger holds his ground Dandenong North’s Stan Beasley is one of the last soldiers standing who witnessed one of the most monumental moments of Australia’s history. On the eve of this Sunday’s 70th anniversary of the first bombing raids of Darwin during World War II, he hopes more will learn about “Australia’s frontline” against Japanese invasion. Mr Beasley, 88, served in the AIF with 1200 others as part of Usher’s Mob, the 118th Australian General Transport Company, in Darwin. To his knowledge, there is only one other survivor alive today and the company no longer marches on Anzac Day. An 18-year-old from Warragul dairy farm, Mr Beasley was there for the last 20 of the 64 officially-recognised raids.
Heavy rains prompted new walk The late Jack Johnson was the author of When The Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city’s pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street.
JACK LOOKS
BACK JACK JOHNSON
When heavy rains stopped us walking from McCrae Street along the creek or through the bush area that is now St John’s College and Besley Gardens to get to Kidds Road and the bridge, we walked from Foster Street to start our treks out to Narre Warren North and Harkaway. Once we had passed the area of red gums at the top of the Clow Street hill, in a paddock that would become Aratula and Grant streets and the ends of King and Ross streets, we were already almost out of our small town of Dandenong. From Kidds Road, once we had passed the paddocks at the back of the few houses in Macpherson Street, there were only two houses before we
reached the creek. The first of these was Florence Cottage, a block-fronted Victorian weatherboard. It stood on the right hand side as you went down the hill towards the creek. It was surrounded by some of the last remaining red gum giants of central Dandenong. The other house had its driveway down on the flat area of Kidds Road just past Ross Street, almost opposite where Besley Street is today. That house was the original Grange home-
stead on RC Walker’s estate, which in the early days took in a fair bit of the area that made up central Dandenong. Over the front gate of the property was a stained hardwood archway with The Grange chiselled into the top beam. A rough driveway led up the hill through a bush paddock which still contained a number of medium-sized dead gum trees. They had been ringbarked years earlier. Amongst the gums grew wattles, paperbarks and native scrub. The attic-roomed weatherboard house stood on the hillside at the top of this driveway, about where the bend of Sarona Street is today. It was obviously built on this rise because when the small creek flooded Kidds Road, the bridge and surrounding land would be under about two feet of water. Sometimes when the creek subsided enough for the bridge to be clear, all that area would still
be under water. The council built a raised boardwalk from just past Ross Street to the bridge. It ran alongside the deep dirt drain which was near the fence of The Grange land with a gap in it to allow access to the property entrance. In later years the Kidds Road driveway was closed and another one created from Ross Street, about where Lebanon Street would be. When all this area was flooded we walked out to the middle of this boardwalk which was about four feet high and two planks wide with a handrail along one side. Much of The Grange land close to the creek, and beyond the area of the farm that would become the Jesson Crescent Housing Commission Estate, was covered by almost-impenetrable bush. Tall ti-trees grew there from which we made great vaulting poles. These we used to vault ourselves over the creek and the many side washes and channels.

Citizens rise against crime By Victoria Stone-Meadows

Lost youth live in limbo By Cam Lucadou-Wells The good news is that police are making inroads into soaring youth crime rates in Melbourne’s south-east, said Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton. But Victoria’s top cops fear the young “hard core” offenders that police are arresting - and frustratingly re-arresting - are part of a lost generation who were living in a fantasy world and were destined for institutionalisation. Mr Ashton told a Casey Neighbourhood Watch meeting on 8 February that less than a dozen leaders of the Apex Gang had been out on more than 100 counts of bail. He noted that police were quickly arresting the repeat offenders and judges were tending to remand more in custody - which in turn was cooling the juvenile crime rate. However, offenders weren’t changing their behaviour.
“We’ve got a whole group in that mid-teen range who I don’t know that we’re going to save,” Mr Ashton said. “There’s a group that are well-entrenched who I think are going to be institutionalised for most of their lives.” Police had made 18,000 more arrests in the past year but there were fewer offenders. Counter-intuitively, young offender numbers in Victoria were the second-lowest per capita nationally. “It shows we have a small group of really hardcore youth offenders stretching us to our limits,” he said. He was confident that police could help drive down the crime rate as low as 1-2 per cent growth by the second half of 2017. Last year, it had been climbing by 14 per cent but trending towards single digits in recent months. The alarming spate of home invasions and car-
jackings was dissipating due to higher remand rates for those offences, Mr Ashton said. But “softer-target” robberies of servos and supermarkets, particularly for cigarettes, were rising. “They think stealing cigarettes might not be treated as seriously,” he said. He said organised crime groups were behind the raids and were paying the young thieves for the cigarettes. The products would then be sold for “next to nothing” under retail counters. With a bevy of extra recruits over four years, a new resource allocation model, he was optimistic there would be relief for the south-east’s stretched police force. He noted recent technological advances which were bringing police up to speed such as a rollout of up-to-date ballistic vests, clothes-mounted video cameras and a 24-7 air wing.
City of Casey Councillor Amanda Stapledon will be hosting a law and order forum as a private citizen, separate from her role as councillor, later this month. The forum will bring together local residents and members of State Parliament to discuss alternative ways of approaching and dealing with crime and crime prevention in the community. MLCs Gordon Rich-Phillips, Georgie Crozier and Edward O’Donohue are the guest speakers at the forum. Cr Stapledon said she decided to run the forum as a citizen separate from council as an effort to avoid politicising the issue of crime in Cranbourne. “I decided to do it this way because the people of Cranbourne are saying to me how they are not feeling safe in the community or in their homes,” she said. “It is important not to politicise it but listen to people who may have a solution to address crime prevention, family violence, policing, sentencing, and help to rehabilitate offenders.” She hopes that through discussion and the sharing of alternative solutions at the forum the politicians will have a better idea of what the community is facing and their needs. “It is about offering an alternative and hearing from the community and getting feedback to get the policy right for these three members of parliament in the future.” Cr Stapledon also hopes that through leading forums and discussions such as this there will be a greater focus on crime prevention programs at a grassroots level. The law and order community forum is on Wednesday 15 February from 7pm at the Cranbourne Bowls Club, with registration for the event closing at 5pm 14 February.

Hospitals in Casey have performed well despite the enormous number of patents presenting to emergency rooms over the summer. Figures released by the State Government show almost half a million people found themselves in emergency rooms at hospitals in Victoria this summer which equates to a 24 per cent increase over the past six years. Locally, Casey Hospital in Berwick and Cranbourne Integrated Care Centre had an overall increase in patents but met key performance benchmarks despite the influx. According to the Casey Hospital’s emergency department, between October and December last year, 16,482 patients presented to emergency, a 5 per cent increase on the same time in 2015. Director of Emergency Medicine for Monash Health Dr Neil Goldie said the large number of births in the growing region contributed to the increase in patent numbers. “The south-east of Melbourne is one of Australia’s fastest growing regions and is experiencing an unprecedented baby boom, he said.
Hundreds of children in Greater Dandenong and Casey need help to stay in school. The Smith Family is appealing for 6000 new Learning for Life sponsors across the country in the lead-up to school returning for the year. The program supports 1017 students across Greater Dandenong and Casey where a dedicated team of co-ordinators works directly with students, parents and schools and provides links to essential services. Sponsors also fund text books, uniforms and other equipment and access to The Smith Family’s learning support and mentoring programs. The Smith Family’s Victorian general manager Anton Leschen said his team was experiencing an influx of calls from desperate parents. “The truth is the costs of a child’s educational essentials are out of reach for many disadvantaged families, he said. 6 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 13 February, 2017

“To meet the increasing demands of our growing community, the $134.9 million Casey Hospital Expansion Project will deliver additional beds across a range of clinical areas including maternity, intensive care and surgical wards. “Construction is expected to start this year, with an expected completion in 2019. Cranbourne Integrated Care Centre, while not an emergency hospital, also experienced an increase in patents but delivered services in line with expected rates. The centre reduced the number of patients on the elective surgery waiting list from 906 at the end of the December 2015 quarter to 719 at the end of this December. The hospital treated 97 per cent of its 203 category two urgent elective surgery patients in the December quarter. It also treated 50 per cent of the hospital’s category one elective surgery patients within seven days, well under the 30-day targeted benchmark. Cranbourne MP Jude Perera said the Government’s investments in local hospitals will see their performances improve further in the coming years.
“Our record investment in health means more patients in Cranbourne will get the care, treatment and surgery they need sooner, Mr Perera said. “With more paramedics on the road, ambulances will be able to respond to life threatening emergencies in Casey even more quickly. Ambulance response times in Casey have stayed steady with the average wait time for code one emergencies of 12.21 minutes in the last quarter of 2015 compared to 12.16 minutes in the second quarter of 2016. Shadow Minister for Health Mary Wooldridge said the ambulance response times in Casey show that Premier Daniel Andrews has not kept his election promise to improve ambulance response times. “Daniel Andrews was happy to talk big before the election but clearly is failing to deliver and Victorians are losing out, she said. “The Andrews Government is failing to deliver the improved ambulance service Casey families expect and deserve.
The independent children’s education charity priced school essentials for one primary schoolaged child at $2400 per year. “When a child doesn’t have the basics they need for school they can feel different and isolated, Mr Leschen said. “The consequences can be serious - they can become disengaged over time and are at risk of dropping out of school. “And that’s a real concern because we know that education is a pathway out of poverty. “If we want to prevent disadvantaged children from the lifelong effects of hardship, the best thing we can do is support them to succeed at school and complete their education. The Smith Family already supports 33,000 children across the country but wants to add a further 24,000 by 2020. “Many people associate child sponsorship with third-world aid, but the reality is there are 1.1 million children and young people living in poverty
right here in Australia, Mr Leschen said. “We are talking about Australian children who are growing up in low income homes where affording life’s basics is a daily struggle. “These children are likely to live in single parent homes and their families may also be dealing with long-term illness, disability, limited education or unemployment. “For just $1.60 per day, child sponsors will give a disadvantaged child practical, long-term assistance that they need to attend school, engage in their learning and complete Year 12. Figures show that 84.2 per cent of Learning for Life graduates who left in Years 10 to 12 were engaged in work and/or study 12 months after leaving the program. Of the remaining 16 per cent, four in five were actively seeking employment and one in six was volunteering. ment would help address a shortfall of at least three soccer pitches in Casey’s north. Casey statutory planning manager Duncan Turner said publicly exhibited information had included reference to “the future expansion of district leisure and sporting facilities, as well as the shared user path link. The owners of the property, owners and occupiers of surrounding land were notified of the amendment's exhibition in writing, Mr Turner said. The Planning Panels Victoria hearing is at Casey Civic Centre on 1 December from 10am.

JOHN Foy isn’t going to stand by and watch Casey Council dispossess and bulldoze his 34-acre patch of paradise in Narre Warren North. The 78-year-old has spent 35 years transforming paddocks and a small billabong into a home with a luscious habitat garden with hundreds of plantings and a nesting pond for varieties of waterbirds. “It feels like 300 kilometres from Melbourne, he says as he surveys his tranquil plot. On 1 December, Mr Foy and neighbour Marlene Kane will address a Planning Panels Victoria hearing to object to Casey compulsorily acquiring his land at 191-195 Belgrave-Hallam Road. He sees it as a ‘David and Goliath’ battle against the Planning Minister who gave permission for the acquisition overlay’s exhibition - and Casey Council. Mr Foy was disgusted when he saw the council’s illustrated plans for his land for the first time last week. His house would make way for a road leading to sports fields, and fill in most of the duck lake. The northern sheep pastures would be home to up to three soccer pitches, car parking and a pavilion as part of an extension of next door’s Narre Warren North Recreation Reserve. Casey moved to publicly acquire Mr Foy’s property after lengthy negotiations broke down. One of the sticking points for Mr Foy was he couldn’t get a guarantee from Casey to not disturb an embankment burial site for six family dogs. “I was going to put in a covenant but I was told I was wasting my time. The council has powers to withdraw it. Four supportive submissions and three opposing submissions were lodged after the council’s advertised public acquisition overlay was exhibited in July

From front page “I wanted to ensure that you were given free passage to go home and sleep peacefully, to know this is off the books and your property is not in our plans. Cr Aziz later said the turning point was that even local soccer club members were lobbying on Mr Foy’s behalf. “Your friends and supporters asked for four more weeks for you to consider this decision. “I’m giving you forever. He, however, noted that the decision may not have been the right one to address Casey’s “infrastructure gap and critical need for soccer facilities for its booming population. Mr Foy’s land was also identified as the “last piece of the puzzle for a trail link between Frog Hollow Reserve and Lysterfield Lake, Cr Aziz said. The surprise unanimous move came after Cr Aziz resolutely backed the council’s intentions in a Facebook post the day before. There had been little indication of the council’s capitulation in public question time early in the meeting. Responding to 13 resident questions on the issue, a council officer steadfastly insisted Mr Foy’s land was the best site. The council will write to Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan seeking State Government help in exploring alternative sites for the soccer complex. Mr Foy had previously suggested the tracts of unoccupied Crown and council-owned land abutting his property, most of which was used for horse agistment. After celebrating with supporters after the meeting, Mr Foy said the jangled nerves in his tummy in recent weeks had at last subsided. He said he was staying put for the time being, subject to his health, and was starting to get a taste for the limelight. “I might be able to audition for a few things, like Home and Away, he laughed. “I’m just happy after the council didn’t want to listen to me about the dogs and the removal of trees. “It was just ridiculous what they were going to do. “Common sense has now prevailed.

Star News broke the story on 1 December 2016.
Parents warned on hot car kids Narre Warren and Pakenham top the callout lists for children reportedly left in locked cars in Victoria in 2016. According to Ambulance Victoria figures, paramedics were called to 1562 cases state-wide last year with nearly 80 per cent of them involving a toddler. In some cases, firefighters were forced to break into locked cars to rescue children who were then treated by paramedics. About 20 per cent of the children needed medical treatment with 15 taken to hospital. The highest suburban callouts - including possible false alarms - were in Narre Warren (30) and Pakenham (27). Some of the other highest incidences were in Dandenong (20), Berwick (16) and Cranbourne (12). On 2 February, the State Government launched a Never Leave Kids in Cars campaign to stress the heat-related dangers to children. Families and Children Minister Jenny Mikakos said it was disappointing that so many people were putting a “loved son or daughter being put at risk of serious injury or death. Children were at particular risk because their body temperature can rise up to five times faster than an adult, Ms Mikakos said. They lose fluids quicker, become dehydrated and can suffer life-threatening heat stroke and organ damage. Ms Mikakos re-iterated the legal penalties to parents and carers - fines of up to nearly $3700 and up to six months’ jail. “Hot cars kill - so there are no excuses and no exceptions. State Health Commander Paul Holman of Ambulance Victoria said tests had found that on a 29-degree day, the inside of a car could reach 44 degrees in 10 minutes and 60 degrees in 20 minutes.

New litter flying squad to strike By Cam Lucadou-Wells A new rapid-response litter prevention unit will headline Casey’s efforts to clean up the municipality. Casey mayor Sam Aziz said the prevention unit’s task was to enforce penalties for littering and illegal dumping. “This will improve council’s ability to investigate and take enforcement action against those who choose to do the wrong thing. “We want to send a clear message to the community that illegal dumping has consequences and will not be tolerated in Casey.” The unit’s other tasks included preventing litter through education. At a meeting on 7 February, the council also voted for changes to its hard-rubbish waste contract to allow collectors to also pick up illegally dumped rubbish. Councillor Wayne Smith warned would-be dumpers that council staff would comb through their rubbish to identify the perpetrators.

Best foot forward for sport funding Betula Reserve in Doveton will receive $51,000 towards new drainage as a legacy of the Asian Cup soccer tournament staged in Victoria in 2015. The State Government grant will go to Casey council to apply to the Kidds Road reserve, which hosts Casey Kings Soccer Club and Doveton Steelers Rugby League Club. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the benefits of the successful tournament would “live on long after the final whistle” through the state’s Victorian Asian Cup 2015 Legacy Fund. She said 11 grassroots clubs were benefiting from the fund. “The best facilities attract more people to grassroots sport. This will open more doors for aspiring soccer stars to play the game they love.”
What will happen to the current Gibb Street hospital? We will relocate all services currently located at Gibb St to the new hospital in Kangan Drive. The Gibb Street facility will temporarily close whilst it undergoes a redevelopment of it’s own. The facility will be transformed into a Rehabilitation Hospital that will open in mid-2018. Will there be a cost associated with car parking at the new hospital? Yes. Prices will be similar to Casey Hospital car parking fees. What will happen to Stephenson House when the hospital moves? Our Consulting Suites and Pathology Laboratory will be relocated to the new Hospital. This creates an opportunity for new services in this facility.

Many times, officers had found envelopes with the dumper’s name and address. Cr Smith said the contractual change would not come at extra cost, and would lead to a rapid removal of reported dumped items. It built on innovations over the past decade that helped tidy Casey’s streets such as coin-slot technology reducing dumped shopping trolleys and rapid tag-removal deterring graffiti vandals, he said. A council report presented on 7 February showed a vast majority of survey respondents (83 per cent) reported Casey investigating dumped rubbish. With the changes, Casey council has halved its service benchmark for dumped waste removal. The commitment is now within five days with an expected average of three, Cr Aziz said. “Council operates a range of waste services, and all Casey households are entitled to two hard waste collections per year, so there’s no excuse for dumping your waste and litter for someone else to have to clean up.”

“I’m basking in the honour,” he said. His handprints joined the likes of Slim Dusty, James Blundell, Chad Morgan, Jimmy Little, Troy Casser-Daley, Kasey Chambers and scores of other notables. Many peers said the induction was too long in coming for Ellis whose prolific career spanned 65 years. There are a few things he insists on - recording with his own voice in good diction, with live musicians, and retaining an Australian country music sound. “The important part of country music is it’s a story. Your diction has to be very good so people can understand you. “These days the percussion is so loud you can’t hear the story!” Growing up in Glen Iris, his early love of horses led him to a life-long love for country music which often hit themes of dogs and horses. Ellis first got a taste for the big time performing songs and circus tricks as a kid with his friends in his backyard. Proceeds went to a blind baby charity, after taking out a cut to buy some biscuits and soft drinks. He built his name and made a lot of money by regularly winning talent quests on radio, performing in dance halls and sideshows, then travelling and performing around Australia. He learnt stagecraft from old showmen - who were hard and had learnt by trial and error how to control an audience of all sorts of people. “It’s a huge study that no school can teach you.” He said there were ways to tell when an audience was “into” the show. It was always best to leave a crowd hungry for more. His career hit soaring highs, with him being a regular on Channel 7 during TV’s debut in Australia in 1956. He was on TV twice in its first week on air, landed his first recording contract when they were “as rare as hen’s teeth” and was a regular on radio 3DB’s Hillbilly Hour. At the time, many country and western performers crossed over into the burgeoning rock‘n’-roll trend. “Our heart was in country but rock and roll was closely related. “We were able to swing over with our guitars.” Ellis also plunged into deep lows when he succumbed to late nights and alcoholism in the 1960s and ’70s. Thus he lost his marriage and his vast TV, radio and stage audiences. “I was still singing around the place but I wasn’t wanted.” But Ellis sobered up and rebuilt his career 16 years ago. In that time, at an age where most are retired, he has recorded up to 10 albums of tracks that still top country radio charts across the world. He’s still recording, though he can’t play guitar like how he used to, and hasn’t had a drink since 1973. “I’m still bright as a button,” he said.

Firm sees a big value in parts By Casey Neill Spee3D printers can make a golf putter in about eight minutes, and they’re being built in Dandenong. Managing director Byron Kennedy has just moved into the new premises he hopes will produce 24 of the $750,000-plus printers each year over the next two years. “We use local suppliers for the vast majority of parts and then they’re shipped out from here,” he said. “This is a big export product. “The markets for us will be Germany, Japan, the USA, but we’re working with some very large Australian companies as well.” The device makes parts using powdered metal. “The aluminium is mined in Queensland, then sent to Tasmania and turned into aluminium powder,” Mr Kennedy said. “We then get that aluminium and build the parts. “We can build the lowest cost parts and you can export them and the whole product is done in Australia. “Instead of shipping off dirt to China we can ship end product which is of much higher value. “Our markets we’re targeting are companies in the automotive sector and industrial companies.
A Spee3D printer. “The real advantage of the technology is it’s fast.” That golf putter? It takes other companies about 24 hours to make. “We’re targeting more simple parts - parts that people use today like brackets, adaptors - just simple things but we can print them very fast and very cheap,” he said. “We’re selling the printers now, primarily into the university sector, and then commercial following that. “Our background was manufacturing. Our
previous start up, we were manufacturing electric motors. “We knew that 3D printing was coming but we looked at the technology and saw that it just wasn’t suited to manufacturing. “We wanted to solve that issue. It was mainly the speed issue. “We understand the pressure points that manufacturers face on a day to day basis.” The casting process to produce a metal bracket could take three months. “We can print ours in the same day,” he said. “You can look and see if it’s any good, then make 100 parts that day.” Mr Kennedy said this 3D metal printing technology would be very disruptive for the casting industry, but would never completely replace it. “Casting is more economical in higher volumes,” he said. “When you get above 10,000 pieces 3D printing is not economical. “We’re targeting the one to 10,000 piece market.” Spee3D received a Greater Dandenong Business Grant at Dandenong Civic Centre on 6 December alongside four other businesses. It included up to $8000 plus business mentoring and marketing valued at about $2000. The Journal will profile each of the recipients.

Historic harrows are the top of the crop for Murray Agricultural The Hugh Murray name has been a Dandenong fixture for more than 100 years. The Buln Buln-based blacksmith turned his hand to driven tine and stump jump harrows in about 1900. “Word got around his harrows were excellent. He then looked for somewhere to increase his production and get greater transport links,” Murray Agricultural Equipment operations manager Adrian Norton-Jones explained. In 1915 he moved to Pickett Street in Dandenong - then the Gateway to Gippsland and closer to raw materials and transport links - where the business remains. The Taylor family bought into the business in 1930 and fourth generation Jonathan Taylor manages sales and business development today. “I feel very fortunate. I’m really excited for the future,” he said. “We’re doing some great things here, and I think we’re going to continue to do great things.” Mr Norton-Jones started with the company in a post-high school gap year in 1995. “Dad just found a job ad in the Dandy Journal,” he said. “He worked in Dandenong and it was easy to get to for him to drop me off here.” His experience puts him in position to understand manufacturing challenges and lend a hand during busy periods. “I know how everything’s made. I’ve made everything myself,” he said. Mr Norton-Jones said the agriculture industry was vulnerable to the ups and downs of the
Operations manager Adrian Norton-Jones with parts for harrows. weather and the economy. “In the early ’80s, I think there were only two shifts before the recession with 25 employees,” he said. “It went down to three or four days a week and
only a couple of employees. “We’ve been very financially conservative through history. “We’ve always been able to keep things going either by trimming the workforce, which is unfortunate, or going to a reduced working week and trying to be more efficient.” He said that hands rather than robots were behind almost the entire manufacturing process. “It’d be nice to be able to make it a bit more efficient in the future, so we can reduce our costs and keep our prices where they are,” he said. “It’s a matter of coming up with new ways to do it.” Mr Norton-Jones said that “with Arrium OneSteel possibly closing down, we’d have to source overseas”. The company used to buy some tines and bolts overseas but brought the purchases back to Australia. “Even though it makes it more expensive, we use Australian-made where possible,” he said. He said customers valued a product built in Australia rather than imported in pieces and assembled locally. “The worm will turn. In America it’s all coming back - the high quality manufacturing is moving back to America from China,” he said. “It will happen in Australia eventually as well.” Murray was nominated for the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards last year. “There’s enough agricultural manufacturers around but not many make harrows like we do
now,” he said. “Last year was one of our best years for our last five years. “But it’s getting to the stage where we need to produce varied products. “To the future, we’ve got a few products that we’re going to bring to market next year. “We have plans to, hopefully, vertically integrate over the next five years. “If we don’t do that, we’ll eventually cease, unfortunately. “We were turning over $1.5 million in the mid-’90s. “Now we’re at about $1 million. “We’re doing about 2000 units a year now, which is probably 40 per cent of what it was 15 years ago, unfortunately.” He said the Riverina of New South Wales was returning to harrowing. “Which is good for us,” he said. “They believe they get better yields.” Murray produces about 15 products, taking care of the pasture for the dairy and grazing industries. “That just knocks the manure and the hoof prints around so it keeps a nice grass cover and keeps the pasture in good condition,” Mr NortonJones said. “The livestock won’t eat where they’ve defecated. “The rest of our harrows are really for the broad acre seeding style - the west of NSW, the Wimmera Mallee of Victoria - those sort of areas where they’ve got the large properties.”

LIVING LIFE AT THE TOP / TIMBERTOP ESTATE, OFFICER Life’s better at the top say residents of Timbertop Estate, which is now home to more than 250 families. The Officer estate, which opened in 2012, now includes a two hectare park and the Timber Mill Cafe, and will soon offer a Montessori childcare centre, which is currently under construction. Prospective buyers can also visit the Display Village and explore home designs from more than 20 of Australia’s top builders. What really sets Timbertop apart from other estates is the tight-knit community that has grown as a result of the Timbertop Residents’ Group. The group organises regular events to promote friendship between neighbours including Christmas, Easter and Halloween events, moonlight cinema nights, wine and cheese nights, and a fitness club. “If you have a look at society today, most people living in estates might know their neighbours either side but don’t really get to know other people,” said Resident Group President Stephen Birch. “With the Timbertop Residents Group, we’re building a friendly environment where people can get to know each other and feel safe.” The new park has also put Timbertop on the map as a family destination for the Officer area. Hicks Reserve, which was officially opened by the land’s former owners the Hicks family and Mayor Brett Owen in January, includes a barbecue and picnic area, viewing platform, playground equipment and giant slide, walking tracks and a kickabout area, which is currently under construction. Resident Jeff Craig and his family love the mix of country and convenience that
the estate offers. “It’s very open, big spaces, great walking tracks. It’s within close proximity to schools and shopping centres, but you don’t feel like you’re living in the middle of suburbia,” Jeff said. Timbertop’s latest stages, the Treetop and Hilltop releases, feature some of the best views in Officer, perched at the top of the estate. There is a range of block sizes from 604 to 1059 square metres to suit families large and small. For more information on living at the top and to find the perfect block visit timbertopestate.com.au.

Plea for return of medal By Victoria Stone-Meadows A yoga instructor who works in Lynbrook is appealing to thieves who stole his Ironman medal during a break-in to return his priceless prize. Darren Crompton arrived at the yoga studio, on Raylee Place in Lynbrook, on the morning of Monday 23 January to find the front of the studio had been smashed. “When I pulled up I could see the door smashed - we had been broken into once before in April so I knew what had happened,” he said. “The glass front door had been smashed in to get access to the lock from the inside,” he said. “There was some clothing in the ground they had dropped on their way out and they had made quite a mess and ransacked the reception area.” “I had a look around to see what was missing; a TV had been taken off the wall and another one from upstairs, the usual things robbers steal.” “I noticed that they went through the draws and had found the Ironman medal.” Mr Crompton won the distinctive medal in 1999 when he competed in the gruelling Ironman competition in Hawaii. He said he was upset to find the thieves had taken his medal as to him it is irreplaceable. “Other things from in the studio are replaceable but the medal is not worth anything to anyone else,” Mr Crompton said. “I worked very long and hard for it; I spent nine years just in the training, all I have is that memento and the memories.” Mr Crompton thanked the police for their quick response to the break-in and their efforts in trying to get his medal back but is hoping someone in the community will come forward who knows about it. “I don’t care who has taken it, I just want the medal back, I can replace the tools that were taken but I can’t replace the medal.” Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the medal are urged to contact Casey CIU on 5991 0600 or make and anonymous report to crime stoppers on 1800 333 000.

An accused drug trafficker allegedly selling meth on Craig’s List using a “sophisticated” app to cover his tracks has been refused bail in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. Craig Thiedeman of Keysborough allegedly admitted to selling under the user-name New Clouds R Us on the “clandestine” app Wickr, police informant Detective Senior Constable Anders Ayoub told the court on 6 February. For 12 months Thiedeman had used the app to post advertisements on Craig’s List selling quantities of meth for up to $450 for 1.7 grams, the court heard. “It’s a highly encrypted app and there’s no trace that can crack it,” Det Sen Const Ayoub said. “There could be multiple transactions for trafficking or it could be few.” The applicant had allegedly told police he’d sold the drug for his own habit and to pay for personal expenses such as petrol. On 22 December he made the admissions after police intercepted him in a car with two grams of crystal methamphetamine in Keysborough. Before a subsequent search of his house, police discreetly waited for party-goers, including a child, to leave. They then seized two bags of suspected ice, a bottle of suspected GHB and a navyblue hat - some of which have been claimed to be in Thiedeman’s partner’s possession. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted the applicant had “his hand held every step of the way” in that time but still allegedly operated a trafficking business for 12 months. “(He’s) been doing it ... surreptitiously that it’s difficult for police to obtain evidence. It’s ongoing while he’s before the court twice.” Theideman will next appear for a screening at Dandenong Drugs Court on 16 March.

SPORT Coaching is a dream come true By Nicholas Creely Dandenong Rangers coach Larissa Anderson is one of those people who just seem to relish a challenge. From such a young age, the rising WNBL coach fell in love with basketball, and was instantly drawn to the game and the art of coaching. “I’ve been playing since the age of seven and I just loved it, and I discovered when I was younger, through all my part-time jobs, that I just loved coaching,” she said. “I ended up actually going out and starting my own little business doing lots of individual coaching with kids and would also coach at camps and clinics during the year. “Then going into uni I actually developed my own role model program going into schools. “It’s always been a big part of me, and it’s what I’ve always wanted to do. “In my last few seasons while still playing I decided to try and step up and give coaching SEABL a crack at my junior club, the Nunawading Spectres. “Once I finished WNBL, I had a year off basketball all together and had my beautiful daughter Emma. “I knew after some time off that I wanted to get back onto coaching and was appointed the SEABL coach at the Dandenong Rangers, and the rest is history.” Throughout the 39-year-old’s illustrious career, which began in 1995 at the Dandenong Rangers, Anderson would go on to become a great of the Melbourne Boomers, formerly known as the Bulleen Boomers, before returning to the club she is now coaching to significant success. Anderson has learnt along her journey that in the modern-age of coaching being a people-

of things from coaches that I’ve noticed they have done well - I’ve picked up a lot of little things over the journey. “For me, personally, the biggest things are to create a great culture, be honest and upfront, and treat people the way you want to be treated. “I believe if you know and understand your
It’s been a long road for Greek marathon hopeful By Nicholas Creely As far as marathons go, the Spartathlon in Greece is one of the most gruelling, exhausting and historic foot races on the planet, an event that takes place in September of every year. For an individual to even qualify for the race, they have to at-least have run a competitive race of 100km in less than 10 hours and 30 minutes. But North Dandenong runner George Alexandropoulos is determined to one day compete in this phenomenon, and has been making waves across the world for his almost unheard running feats. The 30-year-old is on an app called Strava, a global running app that measures distances and he currently leads the world from more than 150,000 participants. Since 1 January, Alexandropoulos has run a total of 1789km in a total of 87 runs and more than 250,000 minutes of running. He said that competing in the gruelling marathon was what drives him and that a realisation that he needed to change his lifestyle forever made him start to think differently. “I, basically, want to do the Spartathlon in Greece, which is a 246-kilometre race - an ultramarathon, that’s my dream,” he said. “First of all I wanted to lose weight. I guess from there I had a passion for running and I’ve always had a fear of putting the weight back on and I just stuck with it. “The start of this year I’ve ran every day and I’ve dropped eight kilos since the start of the year. “I run in the mornings before work and then after work I’ll run, and then on weekends I run as much as I can. “My goal is 15,000km for the year, which I’m actually already ahead of which is good. “There’s 12 months in the year and last month I did 1500. A Spartathlon may await this inspiring runner who one day may achieve his dream and join a list of incredible winners from all across the world. 28 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 13 February, 2017
players, then you are a good step of the way to getting the best out of them. “Player management is definitely a large part but obviously you still need to have a tactical nous about you for sure.” Signed as the first-female coach of the Dandenong Rangers in their 25-year WNBL history, Anderson is one of the only professional female sporting coaches in Victoria. She said it was all worth the effort when it influences the important people in her life. “I’m pleased that a lot more female coaches have come through and continue to come through. “There are so many wonderful female coaches that I’ve looked up to over the years,” she said. “Coaching at the same time as having a family and running a business, it can be done but it is hard - I have to sacrifice a lot of time with family and friends during the season but at the end of the day I really love coaching. “I hope I’m showing my seven-year-old daughter that anything’s possible, that if mum can chase her dreams, so can she - and right now Emma absolutely loves it - she’s gone from having no interest in the game to being completely obsessed.” Outside from her life in the sporting bubble, Anderson runs a PR business with her mother Julie. “To be honest, I sit down sometimes and think ‘ok, how am I going to get all this done?’ - I try and be the best mum and wife I can, and mum and I work really hard. “It is just her and me. If we are not working, things won’t be done,” she said. “There are tougher days, for sure, where everything needs to be done at once, but you just find a way and I’m very lucky to have such a wonderful support network with my husband and family but life can be pretty crazy through the season.”
New faces set for rep game The DDCA is set to roll out its big guns in a representative Twenty20 match against Dandenong Cricket Club on Wednesday 15 February at Carroll Reserve in St Mary’s. The match will start at 5.30pm. The powerhouse Premier Cricket club plays the DDCA on a yearly basis, with a strong turnout expected. It is unclear at this stage which of the First XI players the Panthers will have in, considering they are vying for a top-four position in club cricket. With a number of regular stars missing, the DDCA has rolled out some new names in the exciting squad, with a great mixture of youth and experience making for a pretty formidable line-up. DDCA team Wednesday 15 February 1. Matthew Hague (Dingley) 2. Matthew Chasemore (Cranbourne) 3. Ian Daniel (Mordialloc) 4. Susantha Pradeep (Buckley Ridges) 5. Ruwantha Kellepotha (Keysborough) 6. Chathura Athukorala (Mordialloc) 7. Damith Mapa Ralage (Mordialloc) 8. Jarrod Goodes (Berwick) 9. James Wilcock (Berwick) 10. Jurgen Andersen (North Dandenong) 11. Joshua Dowling (Narre North)
Alexandropoulos is running towards his goal at full throttle.
There are just two players selected in Turf 1, with exciting pace-bowler Josh Dowling and Duwantha Kellepotha both Turf 2 stars. It is chock-full of bowling options with Berwick skipper Jarrod Goodes set to lead the attack and North Dandy skipper Jurgen Andersen expected to take the new ball. The DDCA was also set to play a rep game against the South East Cricket Association (SECA) yesterday (Sunday) with the SECA having legendary batsman Bradley Hodge.

Dual blows for Rangers By Nicholas Creely Dandenong Rangers are going through an unwanted form slump right on the eve of finals, going down two nights in a row in bitterly disappointing fashion. With the Rangers looking to cement their place in the finals, they had to first climb the mountain of a weekend on the road. On Friday night the Rangers visited a champion Townsville side at their fortress, and were never really in the game, going down 83-66 after the Fire got off to a flyer. The Rangers were uncharacteristically inaccurate in their shooting, going as low as 33-percent at some stages, before tidying that up in the final quarter. The usual suspects, Sara Blicavs, Steph Cumming and Natalie Novosel all toiled hard, but were ultimately overcome by a powerful unit. It was then on to Sydney to face league-leaders Sydney Uni Flames who came into the match in ominous touch. But the Rangers were in the groove early and lead by four points at quarter-time and six at the major break. The Flames then started to get their game up and running, but the Rangers continually had the answers, and led by six points heading into the last term - Steph Cumming and Ally Mallott had combined for 43 points. But the game’s momentum completely switched in an instance, with the Flames completely running over the top of the Rangers 21-11 in the last-quarter, with the new premiership fancies stamping their authority over the match. Cumming finished the game with a matchhigh 25 points, while Mallott shot 20 points - for the Flames, Belinda Snell was stellar, putting up 17 points, six rebounds and seven assists. The Rangers, after three consecutive losses, must get back onto the winners board next weekend against the Lynx, in Saturday night’s home fixture at Dandenong Stadium.

Big guns missing but Panthers still find a way to fire By Nicholas Creely VIC PREMIER - ROUND 16 (DAY 1) A depleted and inexperienced bowling attack has shown glimpses of a bright future, with Dandenong dismissing the lowly Frankston Peninsula for 230 on day one at Shepley Oval. With James Pattinson and Justin Butterfield not taking the field, the Panthers were without two of their key lynchpins, but simply had to find a way to keep their top-four spot in check. It is expected Pattinson will be available to bat next week for the Panthers, with youngster Matt Weitering to come out of the side. With so much riding on the Panthers putting away a bottom-four side, the loss of the two stars put a dent on Tom Donnell’s plans on day one - the side in general is one of the most inexperienced Dandenong has put on the park this season, with just six players playing the entire season in the top-grade. Enter a new-look bowling attack featuring Adam McMaster (3/65), a frighteningly quick
Bears not out of the woods
James Nanopoulos bowled a tireless spell for the Panthers. 160414 Picture: Stewart Chambers prospect, and second-gamers Patrick Turner (3/28) and Weitering (2/37), while the evergreen James Nanopoulos (2/30) bowled over 20 overs. Turner, in particular, has been highly impressive since getting his chance last round, with Donnell describing him as an “exciting prospect”. The last-placed Heat took full advantage early,
with Matt Gapes (54), Liam Tonkin (30) and skipper Luke Walker (74) all piling on the runs before McMaster got the Panthers going with the wickets of Gapes and Walker - the Heat then fell from 2/125 to all-out for 230, an almost trademark of their batting this season, leaving them perhaps 100 runs short of par on a stellar Shepley Oval deck. But pressure can do funny things, and with a bowling attack featuring Ben Ashkenazi, Jake Wood and Jackson Mockett, the Panthers must not take things for granted next week. Meanwhile, Casey-South Melbourne is in an utterly dominant position, carving up Kingston Hawthorn at their fortress at Casey Fields. Winning the toss and batting, Luke Manders (66), Michael Wallace (95) and skipper Lachlan Sperling (80) flayed the ball to all parts, racking up 8/356 by stumps. Nathan Lambden (23 not out), Brendan Rose (26) and Dylan Hadfield (23) all chimed in with solid knocks. Hawks champion James Miller (2/47) was the pick of the bowlers.
DDCA - TURF 1 - ROUND 9 (DAY 2) Berwick v North Dandenong The Maroons have denied Berwick an outright victory, in frustrating circumstances for the Bears at the Cave. Needing double-points to climb into the top-four, the Bears couldn’t have been better placed after snagging first-innings points last week. But a plucky Maroons batting line-up batted for 70 overs, grinding out 8/138 by stumps. Jarrod Armitage (4/25) was the star for the Bears on day two. Parkfield v Narre Warren After an agonising five-months without a win, Janaka Liyanabadalge has inspired the Magpies to a victory over Parkfield. Chasing 154 for victory, the Magpies resumed at 1/30, losing a few early wickets, before Liyanabadalge (77) guided his team over the line. Damien Gamage (23) was solid support for the star batsman, while with the ball, Matthew Aslett (3/40) and Shane Bell (3/35) did all they could. Dingley v Cranbourne The Dingoes continue to shock and after powerfully dismantling Cranbourne, still have a chance to make the Turf-1 finals. Restricting to 196 last week, Steve Spoljaric’s group would have been extremely confident of knocking the runs off with ease - instead, Andrew Dalby (4/32) bowled his side to a stellar victory. The Eagles were dismissed for 129 off 67 overs. Hallam-Kalora Park v Springvale South The Hawks have sent a statement as the official team-to-beat, grabbing a further hold on top-spot over Springvale South. The Bloods, chasing 248 for victory, just continually lost wickets, and despite managing a decent flow of runs, couldn’t find a partnership that clicked. They were bowled out for 202, with skipper Steve Gilmour (3/43) finding some wickets and Leigh Booth (3/25) ripping through the middle-order. Buckley Ridges v Dandenong West The endeavor of Dandenong West can never be questioned but Buckley Ridges had enough class to get the job done. Chasing a formidable 280, the Bulls battled hard, with Greg Siwes (53) playing a strong knock early that allowed them to push for a result. However, they fell well short, bowled out for 193. Heinz-Southern Districts v Mordialloc Set just 125 to win, the Bloodhounds got their pretty easily, and remain entrenched in the four for yet another week. They finished on 7/197 off 80 overs, with Lee Brown (3/64) the best with ball.
Dandenong City rebounds with a vintage display By Nicholas Creely NPL 2 - EAST REVIEW (ROUND 2) Dandenong City has bounced back from its disappointing clash with the Thunder, thumping a hapless Richmond City 5-0 in a slick performance at the Frank Halohan Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon. Not able to get their game up and going against their cross-town rivals last Friday night in front of a packed local crowd, the City were in search for their vintage form, and looked on from the outset. The City rolled out a fresh face to the senior side, with Jayden Unmack impressing in his debut, while Ljubo Milicevic made his return. After 17 minutes of City dominance, Shaun Kilipovic found the back of the net to give his side a 1-0 advantage. But for the next 27 minutes neither side could find a way through the defense, before City were awarded a crucial penalty - Kilmar converted, giving City a commanding 2-0 lead before the break.
The City was then merciless, showing the crowd why they are considered one of the heavyweights for this year’s premiership. In the 62nd minute, a slick set-up by Kilipovic gave Enes Sivic a simple goal, before only moments later, last week’s goal-scorer James Kelly found the net and gave the City an ominous 4-0 lead. And then to rub salt into the already painful wounds of Richmond, Kelly once again saluted the crowd for his second goal, third of the season, and fifth for the dominant City. It ends a harrowing week after a horrible loss to their greatest rivals to kick off the season, but the quality and depth of the City roster shone through. Meanwhile, Dandenong Thunder has gone down 2-1 to their great rival Springvale White Eagles, in an action-packed blockbuster at White Eagles Stadium on Saturday afternoon. After the Thunder produced a near perfect performance to kick off their season, they en-
countered an entirely different beast, and a side that has given them some almighty matches in the past. Both local teams now head into Round 3 with 1-1 records - Dandenong City hosts Melbourne City at home next week in what will be an interesting clash, while the Thunder hosts Nunawading City at George Andrews Reserve, with a big crowd expected in their second home-game of the season. In a week in which the A-League expansion talk continues to grow legs in the Dandenong area, the pressure was on once again for the region’s elite sides to continue to push their case and they delivered in spades. The quality of players within the area is highly impressive, and both Dandenong teams will feel well placed to continue their form next round, and hopefully find themselves in a position to be promoted to the top-tier in the near future.

MCG magic for mighty Eagles By Nicholas Creely An incredible 12-month period of success has elevated to new heights, with the Cranbourne Cricket Club tasting sweet victory at the Cricket Victoria Regional Big Bash at the MCG against GCA’s East Belmont on Wednesday morning. Some famous names, such as Ponting, Warne, McGrath and Gilchrist have all had their time on the G’, and now it’s time to marvel at the exploits of some of the names the powerful club at Casey Fields possess. It all began back in November with 16 teams, from each cricketing region across Victoria competing in a round-robin to decide Victoria’s best country team. And it all came down to two evenly matched teams, one from the other side of town. East Belmont elected to bat first, as the MCG bathed in sunshine on a perfect Melbourne morning. After a solid start to their innings, the evergreen Matt Chasemore drew first blood, trapping a hapless Andrew Baars (6) in front LBW, leaving the Lions 1/25 off four overs. Then moments later, Cameron Kelly snared the dangerous Sean O’Neill (25), who skipped out to strong start, but was caught-behind. It was slow going for the Lions, who looked to build and maintain a partnership, but every time some momentum swung their way, the Eagles were able to swoop in and grab a vital wicket. The Eagles kept them to just 107, with Steven Spoljaric (2/15), Matt Chasemore (1/13), Cameron Kelly (2/19), Jakeb McVicar (1/38) and Stuart Plunkett (2/5) among the wickets. And the Eagles started fairly slowly in their chase, reaching 1/30 off seven overs, before Brandon Tyzzer (29) fell with the score at 2/59 off 11 overs. Enter the legendary duo of Spoljaric and Chasemore, who accelerated for the Eagles, getting them to 3/96 before Chasemore was caught off the bowling of Chris Williams for 39 off 35

Pictures: GARY SISSONS “Tactically, we were much harder to hit - it favoured our attack and our game on the day, I suppose.” Cranbourne now sets its sights on Wednesday 22 February’s DDCA Twenty20 decider against Buckley Ridges, as well as the Turf 1 competition, where they are looking at back-to-back flags.
Ready2Race alumni Leopardstown secured his maiden metropolitan win Thursday night at Sandown Park. After a fair getaway Leopardstown found the rail and looked to threaten early leader Eaton Bale. Leopardstown took the lead approaching the home bend and dashed away to win by an increasing nine lengths in 41.96. Trainer Chris Johannsen was relieved by the win after many luckless outings. “He’s been unlucky in a lot of his races. He deserved a city win so I was delighted he was finally able to do it. He’s very strong, once he got to the front I was pretty happy as I knew there was little chance of them running him down,” said Jo-
hannsen. The win was Leopardstown’s first at Sandown Park after 12 attempts. “He’s matured late. He’s got better with age and learnt to race properly in the last few months, prior to that he was a bit erratic.” Leopardstown was purchased following heats of the 2015 Ready2Race auction series by Crocmedia’s Off the Bench team. Off the Bench is a radio show hosted by Craig Hutchinson aired on Saturday mornings via several radio stations throughout metropolitan and regional Victoria. “I listen to the show and they chat about the dogs every so often, it’s good promotion for the industry.”
Ian Wood from The Golden Paw Syndications assisted the Off the Bench team at the auction series. “We went planning to buy five greyhounds however we were only able to get four,“ Wood said. “The fifth was supposed to go to the winners of their Chase of the Year - an AFL player who had the best run down tackle and a listener who voted in the competition.“ Leopardstown was withdrawn from the Ready2Race finals due to injury. “We rang his owner at the time (Des Dooley) and asked what price he’d be happy to sell Leopardstown for,“ Wood said. Dooley agreed to sell Leopardstown for $5000.

MOTORING Upgrade delivers options in full By Ewan Kennedy Toyota Australia has something for just about everyone in the SUV / 4WD field. The Kluger is aimed very much at the SUV lover who wants to transport the family in more comfort than the heavy duty LandCruiser 100 and the almost heavy-duty Prado. Kluger sits midway between Prado and RAV4 and has been popular during its 14 years downunder to date. Now Kluger has been updated, with a facelift, new technology and increased in-cabin comfort. By far the biggest news in the latest Kluger is that the long-running petrol V6 3.5-litre now has the added efficiency of direct-injection. This results in an increase in power of almost 8.5 per cent, to 218 kW, while torque rises to 350 Nm at 4700. The latter is rather high in the rev range but we are assured there’s plenty of grunt before then. Even better is that the engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission so that it can be operating in the beefy part of the torque output virtually all the time. The result of the revised engine and new transmission is that fuel consumption and emissions are down by at least 10 per cent when measured on the official cycle. Kluger is offered in two-wheel-drive and allwheel-drive (AWD) configurations. Though Toyota sees it as having, “a more elegant presence,” it still looks all Kluger to us. None of this sleek, stylish nonsense of the German SUVs. Kluger GX and GXL have a new grille design with a silver-painted finish. The topline Grande gets a painted chrome finish. Tail-lights have a sort-of sleeker look, more importantly they have standard LEDs for faster light-up.
The redesigned front grille on the latest Toyota Kluger gives it a touch of style. The Kluger Grande’s rear bumper gets a chrome garnish to tie in with the shiny front grille. A new design of alloy wheels are 18-inch with five double spokes on Kluger GX, 18-inch with seven outer and seven turbine-style inner spokes on GXL, and 19-inch with 12-outer and 12 black inner spokes on Grande. Note that the spare wheels are identical to the ones on the vehicle - no el-cheapo spares here. New body colours include silver, brown and an additional red hue.
The Mercedes-Benz Sale. Find an excuse today. Just when you thought you’d run out of excuses, Mercedes-Benz just made it that little bit easier. The Mercedes-Benz Sale gives you every reason to buy the car of your dreams. With just one small matter left to take care of and every incentive to do so. There’s no better time to visit Mercedes-Benz Berwick. Go on, find an excuse; or simply trade in today.
Inside, Toyota has specified upmarket materials, soft-touch surfaces and brighter accents. The GX and GXL. Grande have silver woodgrain-look garnishes. Blue LED ambient lighting around the dash and doors sounds like good fun. Toyota Kluger GXL is the mid-spec model and likely to be the biggest seller. It now has an eightinch screen, satellite navigation, digital radio DAB+. Top-of-the range Kluger Grande has added safety features, now using rear-cross-traffic alert - very
handy in a big, bulky SUV. It already had lane departure alert, but that’s further improved in the new model, with steering control and sway warning. It also receives front parking sensors. Grande has a panoramic view monitor that uses four cameras - front, rear and in the side mirrors which are excellent not only for on road use and parking, but also extremely handy in tight off-road driving.
