Express plan to speed up Geelong ‘1958 train time’ Transport advocates want express Geelong-Melbourne trains to shave up to 21 minutes off commuter trips. Local commuters should have the choice of 50-minute services stopping only at North Geelong and Footscray, Rail Futures Institute secretary Bill Russell said. “Current journey times are now no faster than they were in 1958, partly because new suburban stations have been added to the Geelong line,” Mr Russell said. Public Transport Victoria’s website shows that Geelong to Melbourne trains take 56 to 71 minutes. Overcrowding from new suburban stations on the Geelong line would only worsen as residential development expanded, Mr Russell said. He described the Victorian Government’s $4.2 billion Regional Rail Link as “a victim of

its own success”. “It’s turning the Geelong line into a suburban line and risks defeating the link’s purpose of separating V/Line and Metro trains to allow speedier journeys for regional passengers.” Express trains would only be a short-term solution, Mr Russell said. He urged the Government to electrify the Wyndham Vale corridor and separate it from V/ Line services. “Extra tracks would be required to accommodate Geelong express trains that would pass electric trains stopping at the new south-west metropolitan stations. “If the suburban and regional networks are not separated, Geelong is liable to become the terminus of a long slow suburban journey.” Mr Russell said a pair of express tracks added to the Regional Rail Link line would cut the

By Luke Voogt A Hamlyn Heights pensioner brutally who was assaulted at home in August is living in fear after a second attack in central Geelong. Wally Janeczko told the Indy he was sitting in the city mall drinking a can of coke about a month ago when a man approached. “He came up and pushed me and tried to get into my wallet,” Mr Janeczko said. The man continued to push and harass him until police arrived, he said. “Two police officers came around and got him away from me.” The 67-year-old suspected the attack was connected with August’s alleged home invasion. “But I have no way of proving it.” Geelong police had no record of the incident. The alleged attack comes as Mr Janeczko continued seeking compensation from Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal for the August assault. Mr Janeczko suffered severe bruising form the allegedly home-invasion assault. Mr Janeczko is eligible for $1300 to $3250 compensation as a victim of Category B violence. Geelong lawyer Andrew Senia offered him pro-bono help late last year, saying Mr Janeczko deserved greater compensation given his injuries.

simplified by the State Government.” Maximum compensation for Category A violence was $10,000, Mr Senia said. “But for Category A you have to be virtually dead to qualify.”

Children ‘lead surge in crime around Geelong region’ Children are leading Geelong’s crime surge with an increase of 35 per cent in offences, according to police figures. Police recorded 1156 offences involving offenders aged under 18 between October 2015 and September 2016, up on 891 the previous year. Children accounted for 16 per cent of offences, higher than the Victorian average of almost 12 per

Ninety-four young athletes will soon start training with Barwon Sports Academy as it celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. The academy has produced five world champions, including Paralympian runner Kelly Cartwright, water skier Jacinta Carroll and swimmer Phoebe Mitchell. Among the academy’s new athletes are water polo prodigy Alexandra Scorgie, golfer Georgia Fish and surf lifesaver Oliver Watson. Watson had a stand-out performance at the Victorian Enduro Championships in 2016 winning gold in the 2.5km surf race and 6km board race. The 17-year-old also won silver in the under-17 Ironman, bronze in the surf race and board relay, and gold in the board rescue at the 2016 Victorian Titles. Colac’s Georgie Fish will once again join the academy after breaking the ladies course record at Barwon Valley Golf Course in 2016. The talented 16-year-old was a member of the Golf Victoria Junior Development squad in 2016. Scorgie, 15, joins the academy after leading the

Recent graduates from the academy include professional golfer Ben Eccles and Olympic shot putter Damian Birkenhead. Barwon Sports Academy CEO Cam Loftus thanked local councils, businesses and organisations for their support. “This support has ensured we can develop outstanding young people who are the leaders of tomorrow,” he said. Grandma takes lead for Land 400 By Luke Voogt With Geelong leaders lukewarm on lobbying to bring a $5 billion defence contract to the city, Grovedale octogenarian Robyn Seymour is stepping up in their place. Robyn spoke out after the Indy reported that the two final bidders for the Land 400 combat vehicle project were keen on Geelong despite Industry Minister Wade Noonan claiming they preferred Melbourne. Last week the chief of local municipal alliance body G21, Elaine Carbines, declined to lobby the Andrews government on Geelong’s behalf, calling the city a “very unlikely proposition” based on advice from “the minister and senior bureaucrats”. Committee for Geelong boss Rebecca Casson and City Hall administrator Kathy Alexander also declined to lobby for Geelong to host the project. Enter Robyn, turning 90 this year. “I think it would be very good for Geelong because so many men are out of work at Ford and Alcoa - it would give them jobs,” she told the Indy. “(The politicians) don’t seem to realise how serious it is. It hasn’t really hit people yet.” Robyn, who lived at North Shore during World War II, remembered the factory churning out military vehicles daily. “You’d see them in the driveway at Ford - they were all over the place. “They seemed to be pretty busy with the vehicles.” Ford suspended commercial operations for full-scale military production, manufacturing landing craft and artillery components. Robyn remembered Americans moving into huts near Geelong’s international harvester. “At the harvester they used to assemble planes and fly them up and down the paddock.” Robyn worked for decades at Ford, retiring at age 57 in 1983. “A long time after the war I worked at Ford in the medical centre and at the casting plant,” she said.

That has actually been proved incorrect because both companies (said) they were willing to work in Geelong.” Mr Ramsay called on the government to explain why Fishermans Bend was its “preferred site”. He believed that the suburb’s former Holden factory was earmarked to prevent a $130 million state purchase of the site looking ‘‘limp.” Mr Noonan said Mr Ramsay should stop attacking the government and instead advocate for Victoria to win the contract. “Discussions between the final two bidders and the ... government have revealed Fishermans Bend would be the preferred location if they chose to assemble these vehicles in our state,” he said. “The former ... “Those guys don’t need an excuse to go camping - they love it!” Susan said. “It’s awesome to know people would want to do something like that with us.” Peace of Mind is a Geelong charity which supports people with brain cancer. It will host a women’s retreat in October.

Barwon Heads’ Susan Cauchi lived with two “benign” brain tumours for six years before hearing the words which shook her to her core. “My last MRI showed significant growth and the doctors told me to prepare for surgery,” the single mother said. “It’s taken me six months to work through those four words.” But a scenic Harley ride on the Great Ocean Road has “restored her confidence”. “I came away feeling ready to take on what’s ahead,” she said. Susan joined 120 people (including volunteers) at Peace of Mind’s family retreat on the Surf Coast on the weekend. Her son Max went with her, a day after turning 12, making the weekend even more memorable. Her “petrol head” son enjoyed activities including jet skiing, muscle car rides and outdoor cinema, although he was initially reluctant to get on a Harley. “My son was absolutely terrified - he was convinced he was going to fall off. But (The rider) showed Max how to put his hands out and he did that all the way back home.” “These are all things my son has been busting to do, but as a single mum it’s a bit out of my capability.” Susan’s 68-year-old thrill-seeking mum Laura travelled from Sydney for the event. “(Riding on a Harley) been one of her bucket list things for as long I can remember,” Susan said. “She says she’s going to come back as a biker in the next life.” “We left there with sore faces from smiling so much.” Susan has been on “watch and wait” for five years, but recent tumour growth has put her life in danger. The 47-year-old will undergo her final assessment before surgery on 27 February. She said one tumour was “an easy fix” but the

‘Appy-travellers’ with bus tracker By Luke Voogt Geelong commuters can now track their bus using an online app, State Government has announced. Public Transport Victoria’s (PTV) Next 5 feature, on its app and website, now lists the next five buses for any route in Geelong. Every minute PTV updates the list, which shows the estimated time of bus arrival at each stop on the route. Geelong public transport advocate Mr Westcott described the improvement as great news for travellers with smart phones. “It makes it a lot easier and a lot less stressful for people who catch the bus,” he said. “At least if it’s late - which is annoying enough - they know it’s on the way. And if it’s not coming you won’t be left standing there like a shag on a rock.” Previously, passengers only had access to timetable information and no way of knowing about unexpected bus delays.

Lara MP John Eren said the app would help commuters get home safer and sooner. “Real time information means passengers can find out exactly when their bus will arrive, even if something unexpected has happened,” he said. The improvement follows the introduction of 18 extra train services to Geelong every week in January. “It’s good, but it’s a very minor increase really when you divide it by seven days, and remember it’s each train up and back,” Mr Westcott said. Mr Westcott welcomed recent State Government plans to improve level crossings on the Warrnambool line. “Only 12 per cent of trains on Warrnambool line last month got to their destination within 10 minutes of the scheduled time,” he said. “But the main problem is it’s a single track all the way from Geelong to Warrnambool with just two crossing loops.” For real-time Geelong bus information, visit ptv.vic.gov.au

Drugs swoop nets guns and bikie A state police taskforce has arrested a bikie at Leopold after swooping on drugs, weapons and stolen goods during a series of raids on the Bellarine Peninsula. The anti-bikie taskforce members charged the Rebels motorcycle gang member with trafficking methamphetamine and multiple counts of a prohibited person possessing firearms, theft, burglary and handling stolen goods. Police remanded the 33-year-old Leopold man to appear at Geelong Magistrate’s Court on 23 June.

Glass heart raised to new standard

When Drysdale’s Festival of Glass began in 2011 it was just in time for newly-trained artist and Leopold nanna Lynda Rogers. “I’d just done some courses and I saw the festival posters - it was like a sign,” she joked. The 55-year-old took up the art eight years ago to wind down after work. “I used to work at Target Head office in a high pressure job and it was just good stress relief,” she said. Lynda discovered the art in country Victoria when she took a trip to learn mosaics from a glass artist. “As soon as I saw everything in her studio I thought ‘I have to learn to do that and that and that’,” she said. She spent the next six weeks driving two hours each way to Kilmore learning the craft. “I hired my first kiln just in case it was going to be a passing phase.” Lynda bought her own kiln four years ago, giving discarded bottles a “second life” as flowers, bowls, clocks and signs. “I’m really getting into the recycling stuff,” she said. Her part-time job at a local liquor store also helps her indulge her passion. “I have customers bring me in their bottles,” she said.

“There’s always something you can do with it.” Lynda will again vie for the festival’s recycling prize with fellow grandparent David Hobday, who has won it two years in row. David, a 63-year-old from Point Lonsdale, has exhibited in the Festival of Glass since it began. “The festival’s been amazing,” he said. “The people that organise it ... put in so much to make it a great day.” David’s 29 years as a marine biologist and his love of the ocean inspired his work, which includes boats, waves and colourful sea creatures. “I just love living near the water I could never be far from it,” he said. His glass journey began when he created a glass lamp shade in the '70s. “They were pretty popular back then,” he said. The “watery qualities” of glass make it perfect for David’s nautical themed pieces. “It marries a bit of the science and the art together - there are a lot of technical aspects to it.” David, who has taught classes in glass, said recycling works posed a unique challenge. “You’ve got to think outside of the square.” The Festival of Glass Expo runs 10am to 4pm at the Christian College Drysdale, with other events across the Bellarine this weekend. Vet wave of acceptance Local war veterans are reconnecting with the civilian world one wave at a time thanks to RSLbacked surf sessions. Psychologist and veteran Tavis Watt said catching a break could help former soldiers cope with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). “With PTSD you’re dealing with intrusions and nightmares,” he said. “But when you’re on that wave you’re living in the moment rather than reliving the past.” Surfing is the first activity in the pilot program, which Geelong RSL launched late last year. The program will include other activities like archery and zip-lining. “These guys are buzzing after each session,” Mr Watt said.

“It’s a real buzz to see it, too.” The RSL hopes to spread the program to the rest of Victoria following a $400,000 State Government grant. Mr Watt said many veterans struggled with PTSD symptoms including “hyper vigilance” and depression. “They can’t reconnect because they’ve been involved in things you can talk about with a general audience. People who have toured third world countries have trouble adapting to first world problems.” Mr Watt served as an army psychologist on seven tours of Afghanistan, helping soldiers cope with the horrors of war. “At the end of the day war is a violent thing and you’re training people to do things that don’t come naturally to the average person.” Spending time with others who have experi-

enced war zones can help veterans, he said. “They share similar senses of humour and coping strategies.” The Torquay psychologist, who still serves in the Reserves, runs workshops for the RSL covering topics from coping in crowds to dealing with government agencies. RSL welfare officer Toni Podbury said greater Geelong, one of Victoria's most-populated municipalities, had the highest number of Veterans Affairs clients in the state. The local veterans population made Geelong an ideal site for the “ground-breaking and innovative new program”, she said. “These young men and women have led a structured and regimented life years and their re-entry into civilian life can be unsettling and confusing.”

Police on the hunt for sex attacker Geelong detectives are appealing for witnesses following an alleged sexual assault in Waurn Ponds at the end of 2016. Detectives from Geelong Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team released information Tuesday night as they searched for an offender. Detectives said a woman was walking through a Waurn Ponds shopping centre Friday 30 December, about 2.30pm, when an unknown man sexually assaulted her.

The Geelong Ballroom Dancing Club president this week promoted the city’s varied dance schools in a bid to bolster “declining numbers“ of dancers. “We just want people to get out there and learn to dance - we don’t care if they go and learn somewhere else.” Mr Anstis said there were Geelong schools

specialising in teaching children or people with Parkinson’s. “Dancing enhances social and physical well-being and stimulates good mental health. So with night courts taking over from bail justices, can we expect more accused released on bail? Bail justices are called out at all times of the night and on weekends to hold out-of-sessions court so people obtain independent decisions about accessing bail or being remanded for the protection of witnesses and the public. Amid rising domestic violence, bail justices also issue interim accommodation orders to urgently remove at-risk children from their parents. Bail justices travel great distances at their own cost to serve the community and keep it safe. In 2015-'16, 230 bail justices held 12,500 out-of-sessions courts - imagine what this could cost when magistrates receive $291,579 per annum, plus costs. Bail justices go through stringent professional selection criteria and must pass a psychology test. Remove child escapees’ privacy There is a simple way to ensure that information concerning escapees from Victorian juvenile detention centres is released in a timely manner. The change would protect public safety and give practical effect to the public’s right to know what potentially threatens them. The State Government should amend the relevant provision in the Act concerned to make it lawful for the immediate release of information such as their crimes and photograph when a juvenile detainee escapes custody. Aussie rock icon lives to perform By Luke Voogt A founding father of Australian rock will come to Geelong next weekend during his 60th anniversary tour. After decades playing for sold-out crowds Lonnie Lee is still not slowing down. “If anything I’m much more alive on stage,” the 77-year-old said. “I used to be a shy sort of a dude. As the years have gone I’ve sort of lost that.” Lee is celebrating the birth of his career in 1957 when he won a radio competition to find “Australia’s Elvis” when he was just 16 years old. “Hardly anybody knew Elvis at that time,” he said. “There was no top 40 and rock and roll was still relatively new. “To be statistically correct its 61 years,” he added. “I started on an amateur competition on (a Sydney radio station) and came second in 1956.” Lee grew up in the New South Wales town of Rowena to the sounds of his mum and dad’s piano and American country music. He taught himself the ukulele at 13 and a few years later he moved on to guitar. The birth of rock and roll would see him rise to fame. “That was when the arrow shot me through the heart and I thought ‘that’s the music that I love’.” Lee still remembers his first Geelong concert in 1959 with fellow icon Johnny O’Keefe on the last day of Australia’s first rock tour. “When the rock movement began in the US the kids went ape!” he said. “That’s exactly what we experienced as well.” The final gig would become infamous for O’Keefe’s dramatic “swan dive” at the end of the day. “We were close friends,” Lee said.

“He said to me ‘Lonnie if you see me fall down on stage don’t worry about it’.” The press lapped it up reporting O’Keefe “rocked so hard at Geelong last night he rolled over and collapsed”. “And that’s, of course, what he wanted,” Lee said. “That’s what everyone was doing those days.” Lee played for 60,000 in Australia’s first open air rock and roll concert. “That was a monstrous affair,” he said. “But it’s also really nice to have the intimate things where you can see their eyes and they can see yours.” Lee said his last Geelong performance in 2006 at the RSL was “stacked to the rafters”. “I do close to 50 songs. It’s bang, bang, bang - I don’t just lure people in there to bore them to death with talking.” Lee does an annual gig during Seniors’ Week in the north NSW town of Maitland where the local council banned him in the late ’50s after his crowd broke chairs in the town hall. He said when pensioners normally “stooped over their walkers” sing “their faces out” he would “see all these young people again”. But he added that his Maitland fans’ chairbreaking days were well behind them. Lee's biography notes some significant firsts for an Australian rocker including being the first Australian to record a stereo album, first Australian to have a double-sided record, first Australian to have a number one hit from an album, and first in Australia to have a full-colour album cover. His hits from the late 1950s and '60s include 'Ain't it bright', 'Starlight Starbright', 'Yes indeed I do', 'I found a new love' and 'Defenceless'. His last big hit was 'Sad over someone' in 1969. Lonnie Lee will be playing at the Geelong Performing Arts Centre on Saturday 25 February at 8pm.

Magic Men channel Tatum By Luke Voogt Being a Channing Tatum doppelganger can get someone a long way, as British expat Will Parfitt discovered two years ago. ‘Channing’ is one of the Magic Men who will get their gear off at the Sphinx next weekend. It was a random meeting which led Channing down the unexpected career path of male dancing. “I was on a night out and this club promoter kept calling me Channing,” the former South London chef said. “He introduced me to Carlos, who owns Magic Men, and I just fell into it like that.” Channing had been travelling to Australia for three years before he took on his first gig as a topless waiter. “It’s how most of the boys start there,” the 26-year-old said. “I sort of learnt the dancing from watching the boys.” He said his fellow strippers had become “family” to him. “I thought maybe the guys would be arrogant or cocky because that’s what you hear about strippers,” he said. “But the reality was they’re just guys that like to have fun.” Channing said he was living the dream with the “money, girls and the lifestyle”. “It never feels like a job,” he said. “Groups of guys go out and spend hundreds of dollars.” “We’re going out on nights that guys want to go on - surrounded by girls - and we’re getting paid for it.” Channing said his stage-name namesake had influenced his style. “I seem to be copying more and more of his traits now that people are saying I look like him.

The dual Cambodian-Australian citizen discovered the plight of children living in poverty in South-East Asia during her 25-year career in the Department Geraldine Cox of Foreign Affairs. She founded Sunrise Cambodia in 1997 after rescuing a group of war orphans who were trying to survive in the jungles of the Cambodian-Thai border. Terrain connects An ensemble featuring 16 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dancers will bring the timeless beauty of Lake Eyre to Geelong next month. Bangarra Dance Theatre performers will grace the stage in their latest show, Terrain, in which they will explore their connection with the land. The show’s artistic director Stephen Page said he was excited about visiting Geelong. “Touring regionally is an invigorating time for us and we look forward to sharing this work with communities in regional Victoria,” he said. Indigenous television presenter and dancer Frances Rings choreographed Terrain in 2012, and it has since won two national theatrical awards. “Terrain reveals the transformative power of

By Alistair Kennedy It’s a bit of a stretch to call Kia the sleeping giant of the Australian automotive industry but for a company with such close links to its high-flying Korean sibling, Hyundai, it has long been something of an under-performer. That’s all changed in the last two years with back-to-back growth in sales of 20.5 per cent in 2015 and 26.5 per cent in 2016 and Kia has now moved into the top 10 of overall motor vehicles sales for the first time. This week’s test vehicle, the Sorento, is the larger of Kia’s two SUV models and it has been an important contributor in the sales growth following the arrival of its current third generation model in mid-2015. Sorento comes in four grades. In rising order of equipment and price they are Si, SLi and Platinum. Prices range from $40,990 for the petrol two-wheel-drive Si to $58,490 for the turbo-diesel AWD GT-Line. Sorento is neat and compact with a high bonnet and the characteristic Kia grille flanked by large cutouts for the foglights and eyebrow headlights topped by LED daytime running lights. Both the grille and lower air intake have an attractive honeycomb fill. The roofline flows gradually downwards from above the front seats to the rear and, while it does reduce headroom in the third row seats that’s only going to be a problem in the unlikely event of adults occupying the seats. Kia Sorento is a seven-seater, effectively an SUV-people mover crossover, so outward vision is important and the side windows are large and extend all the way to the rear. Likewise the rear of the vehicle is squared-off to enable 320 litres of luggage to be carried even when all seven seats are in use. That increases t0 1077 litres with the third row seatbacks folded, and a van-like 2066 litres with the second row also folded. Standard across all three models are roof rails and rear spoiler. SLi and Platinum add a hands-free powered tailgate and LED rear combination lights with the Platiunum getting a panoramic sunroof. The Si rides on 17-inch alloy wheels; the SLi

on 18-inch alloys and Platinum and GT-Line on 19s. The latest addition to the Sorento range, the GT-Line, added in late 2016, gets chrome wheels, stainless steel side steps, red brake calipers, red leather trim, paddle shifters, LED ice cube fog lamps, chrome accented interior and GT-Line badging. Two engines are available, 3.3-litre V6 petrol and four-cylinder 2.2-litre turbo-diesel. The V6, offered only in the 2WD models, generates 199 kilowatts of power and 318 Nm of torque at a very high 5300 rpm. The AWD Sorento models, to cater for the potential extra demands, get the diesel engine which produces 147 kW of power and a healthy 441 Nm to torque between 1750 rpm and 2750 revs. All Sorento models have a six-speed automatic transmission. Sorento’s tech features use the the Kia audiovideo navigation (AVN) system using a 7.0-inch LCD touchscreen. All models get satellite navigation with SUNA traffic information, Aux and USB input and Bluetooth functionality. Pairing is intuitive and fast. The Si has a six-speaker audio system, higher specced models a 10-speaker premium Infinity sound system powered by an external amplifier. Both have speed dependent volume control. Sorento has a five-star safety rating from Australasian NCAP. There are six airbags, including front-to-rear curtain coverage. All models have ABS with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution; elctronic stability control; vehicle stability management; hill start assist; emergency stop signal; reversing camera; front and rear parking sensors and a tyre pressure monitoring system. The Platinum adds lane departure warning; smart cruise control; blind-spot detection and rear cross traffic alert to the driver safety aids. The new GT-Line is the first Sorento to feature autonomous emergency braking. Entry and exit is easy with little bending and straightening requires. The front seats are large, comfortable and supportive. The middle row second row seas can slide back and forward with plenty of legroom for the tallest of adult passengers when set in the rearmost position.

SPORT Chance for finals LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club continued its late season run of form with a dominant win against St Kilda last weekend. Playing at Kardinia Park, St Kilda won the toss on Saturday and chose to bat first and got off to a great start reaching 1/107. From there though, the tide turned as Nathan Alexander with 2/51 and Brenton McDonald, who took 2/74, swung the game in the Cats favour. Add to that some sharp fielding contributing to two run outs, and St Kilda slumped to be 8/193. But a fantastic 79-run eighth wicket stand pushed the score to 272 before a late declaration. In reply on Sunday, skipper Eamonn Vines showed why he is destined for higher honours, superbly crafting a glorious century at the top of the order, the emerging star showing maturity beyond his years to post an unbeaten 132. With support from Mark Pettini who made 75, 28 to Angus Boyd and 27 by Mitchell Reid, Geelong cruised to a six-wicket win to consolidate last round’s win. With one game remaining against Footscray Edgewater, coach Andre Borovec and Vines will be pressing home the importance of a strong finish to the season. In the Geelong Cricket Association, the match considered by many to be the most important in terms of jostling for ladder positions going into finals, is balanced clearly in the favour of St Josephs, after a dominant batting display last Saturday against Murgheboluc. Leigh Kentish continued his exceptional form, crafting a gutsy 147 not out on a day where all other batsmen struggled to find their feet. The star all-rounder, batting at number four, notched up his fourth century of the season so far, to

lead his side to a very healthy 271 all out at stumps. Francis Gill chipped in with 47, while earlier Luke Ibbs made 38 at the top of the order. For the Frogs, Nathan Baxter was the eighth bowler to be tossed the ball, but returned the best figures for the day with 4/47 from 17 overs, while Dylan Grozdanovski snared 3/42. With much to play for tomorrow, Murgheboluc look to have a tough task ahead of them, and while their batting form has been excellent of late, St Josephs boast an experienced and disciplined bowling line-up, meaning it’s hard to see the Joeys letting this one slip. In Division 2, the juggernaut that is Alexander Thomson continues to destroy everything in its path. The success-starved club looks like roaring into this year’s finals after already claiming the points on day one of their clash with St Albans Breakwater, and will surely push for maximum outright points tomorrow. The Vikings bowled first and didn’t have it all their own way early, the Saints reaching 55 before losing their first wicket. But from there, a collapse of monumental proportions ensued, as all 10 wickets fell for the addition of just 39 more runs, a final score of just 94 the result. Sean Tindale continued his good form with 3/23, but it was Sanjeewa Jayasekara who was the star, claiming 6/28 from 15 overs. In reply, Alexander Thomson made sure an opportunity of first day points wasn’t lost, cruising to 6/162 at stumps, Michael Cox top scoring with 61. For St Albans Breakwater, Sean Bogan did what he always does and bowled his heart out, taking 5/48 in a classy spell of bowling. Tomorrow, the Vikings will most likely declare on their overnight score and push for 10 points, a feat that may well see them in the top six if they can pull it off.

Corio has catch options everywhere ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Corio Bay provided anglers with many different options last week. Geelong’s waterfront hosted anglers casting soft plastics in tight around structure for pinkie snapper and flathead along with the odd Australian salmon to almost 1kg. On the Bellarine Peninsula, Indented Heads produced reasonable squid catches along with good numbers of whiting. First and last light was peak bite time for whiting over the past couple of weeks, particularly for the larger fish. Tenderised squid and pippie baits did the trick again, with garfish also a viable option over the grassy sections of water in 4m to 5m. Queenscliff Harbour remained solid for silver trevally on both bait and lure. Soft plastic anglers had success with worm-style plastics rigged on jig heads heavy enough to bump the bottom effectively. Kingfish fever continued raging in The Rip where jigging with 150g knife jigs got or trolling freshly caught squid worked well on fish to 8kg. Supplies of fresh squid were found while casting or drifting with artificial jigs around the entrance to Swan Bay or in Queenscliff Bight. Trelly’s Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lugt spent an hour or two chasing bream down at Queenscliff where he tangled with a solid fish of 47cm. Inside the Barwon River estuary, land-based anglers banked salmon, whiting and trevally between the bridge and the Sheepwash. Small pieces of prawn did the trick. Offshore from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads, anglers had success on both sharks and kingfish. Trolling with X-Rap lures behind the back of Point Lonsdale was a great tactic on the kings, while also successful were anglers who sounded up schools of fish on reef areas before deploying knife jigs. Gone Fishing Charters’ Chris Vasilevski had a

Makos to 35kg were not too hard to come by on the drift, with numerous sharks boated in the one outing. Land-based anglers fishing for salmon along the Surf Coast caught fish to 1.5kg while casting lures from the rock platforms and beaches. The higher incoming tides fished best. Freshwater fishos enjoyed exceptional fishing for redfin at Lake Purrumbete. The size was limited to around 25cm but the sheer numbers of reddies made for great fun. Wurdi Boluc Reservoir, ‘The Lake of 1000 Casts’, also produced plenty of redfin similarly sized to the catches at Purrumbete the size is not quite there. The larger models for which the reservoir is renowned should appear over the next few months. Carp kept anglers entertained along the Barwon River from Breakwater to Queen’s Park. Super-sweet corn kernels rigged on light running sinker rigs were effective on fish the 6kg. Next week should present opportunities to target kingfish, likely to hang around for another month or two yet. Otherwise, whiting will be an option in 5m to 6m out from St Leonards’ yacht club at first or last light, the Barwon estuary should begin firing up with elephant fish, and freshwater enthusiast could try Wurdi Boluc for redfin.
