Fred Schultz with wife Shannon Schultz and daughter Olina Schultz in a ‘tiny house’.

12338439-KC5-17

Coming at a small fraction of the cost of a traditional Melbourne home, are Tiny Houses the solution to unaffordable homes? As first home buyers struggle to afford somewhere to live in the urban squeeze, Casey council is investigating how the “Tiny House revolution” of small, portable homes that could be carried on trailers and parked in backyards can be incorporated into Victoria and Casey’s planning regulations. Fred Schultz, of Castlemaine-based Fred’s Tiny Houses, said Tiny Houses are classified as ‘caravans’ under urban planning schemes. Therefore, their dwellers are legally restricted from “camping on your own land” for more than 28 days, he said. Mr Schultz said his two-storey corrugated-steel homes with solid timber interiors aren’t for everyone. It requires an austere lifestyle, including living “off the grid” with solar panels on the home’s roof and minimal electric appliances. But it also helps create a better work-life balance, Mr Schultz said. “It’s about not having a huge mortgage, not having to work so hard to afford a house. I think there’s a lot of young people in their 20s and 30s who are interested after having done the maths.” His seven-metre homes - though some are as short as four metres - cost $120,000 for an off-thegrid version. But “shells” in which buyers can have their electrics installed could cost as little as $30,000, Mr Schultz said. “Some are just, basically, a bedroom that can be parked close to other services, such as a bathroom in a main house. They’re probably for a single person or a couple that gets along well.” Mr Schultz first moved into a Tiny House after turning 50 and realising he was never going to afford the “dream” house. “I believed my parents when they said if you work hard, you can have whatever you want. “But I found it wasn’t the case.” Cr Amanda Stapledon, who raised the council motion on 7 February, said Tiny Houses in medium-to-high density areas could contribute to housing diversity and affordability. She said young people entering the housing market were looking for more affordable options and leaving smaller ecological footprints. The initiative also offered portability, reduced stamp duty costs and was an alternative to renting. “They tick so many boxes,” Cr Stapledon said. Cr Geoff Ablett, in welcoming the investigation, said the “unique proposition” worked well in parts of Gippsland and offered an alternative to the housing developers’ estate model.

Pub flasher can’t recall

In Brief Motorist flees to police refuge

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has told a court that he had no memory of wilfully and obscenely exposing himself outside a Doveton pub. The man sat with his head in hands at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court as he heard how staff at Prince Mark Hotel had seen him drop his underwear and touch himself about 8.20am on 20 December. Before the incident, the apparently “substance affected” man was a regular at the hotel. That morning, he had been wandering in the car park after first entering the hotel through an unlocked door.

He later told police he was embarrassed by his behaviour. “I can’t believe I was sitting there having a tug,” he said. “F***, I deserve a smack.” The accused’s lawyer told the court the man was drunk and medicated but not ice-affected, having cut all his drug-taking associates from his life. He had formerly used about a gram of ice a day and was proud of the progress he’d made on a community corrections order. He now feared he was facing a jail term for breaching his corrections order by offending. “He doesn’t usually drink,” the lawyer said.

“He started drinking by himself for a number of hours and doesn’t remember the incident.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the act was “out of character” for the man, who was doing well on his community corrections order, was in full employment and passing his drug screens. “I can’t believe you were doing it either. “When you abuse alcohol, it can undo all the good work.” Mr Vandersteen fined the man $1000 and added judicial monitoring to the correction order’s conditions. “Don’t do this again,” Mr Vandersteen said. “It’s hugely embarrassing to you.”

Police are looking for the occupant of a grey Nissan Pulsar who injured another driver when he threw a Jim Beam can at a car on the Monash Freeway on Friday 10 February. The two cars were travelling outbound on the freeway near EastLink just before midnight when an occupant of the Pulsar threw the can into the driver’s side window of a black Honda Prelude. The can hit the driver, a male in his 60s from the Casey area, in the face and caused a laceration. The vehicles then continued down the Monash Freeway in and out of traffic before the victim exited at Stud Road and then turned into Heatherton Road with the offending vehicle still following. The driver of the Nissan continued to harass the Honda on Heatherton Road by tailgating, flashing headlights and cutting off the vehicle. The driver of the Honda did a U-turn at James Fawkner Drive and pulled into Endeavour Hills Police Station. The Nissan pulled over a short distance away but drove off once police came out. Anyone who saw the incident is urged to contact Endeavour Hills Police Station on 9709 7666.

Anti-crime cash announced A $700,000 grant will tackle youth crime in Greater Dandenong. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced the cash at a Youth Crime Prevention Workshop at the Department of Justice in Thomas Street on Friday 17 February. Ms Williams said the number of young offenders had fallen but that some were committing serious crimes more frequently. The cash will target young people who were offending or at risk of offending through a partnership between the courts, youth agencies and police.

Jacob has written a moving story inspired by his father and former Iraqi serviceman Peyos, right. 164952

Insider’s account is the basis of Jacob’s Anzac tribute By Cam Lucadou-Wells Writing an essay on Anzac Day seemed a bit bland for Fountain Gate Secondary College student Jacob Eisho. Instead, Jacob, 15, of Doveton, took a creative path to winning one of 20 Premier’s Spirit of Anzac prizes by writing a powerful story on World War I from the point-of-view of a serviceman’s teenage son. Jacob’s own father Peyos was a 30-year-old conscript submarine engineer in the Iraqi navy during the First Gulf War. In 1991, he escaped by foot to Turkey and soon successfully re-settled in Australia. Though Mr Eisho wasn’t on the frontline, there was a close call when his submarine came under torpedo attack from an enemy submarine.

The crew turned off the engines to avoid detection as they felt the explosions close by. In his story My Dad, Jacob describes a family’s shock when their dad returns home from Gallipoli with part of his right leg amputated. They had already bought the ex-serviceman a box of shoes as a welcome-home gift. The father puts on the left shoe and says: “Fits perfectly! Now to see if we can refund the other one ... ” His son inspires himself to follow his dad’s courageous attitude, to “stay strong and don’t give into fear - whatever the future may hold. “The moment you get scared and give up is the moment you lose.” Jacob tells Star News he enjoyed putting himself into the shoes of characters in the distant past. “I don’t think of myself as being creative but I had inspiration from my dad.”

As part of his State Government-funded prize, he and 19 other Victorian students will go on a study tour in Canberra mid-year. They will visit institutions such as Parliament House, the Museum of Australian Democracy, the National Archives of Australia and the Australian Defence Force Academy to learn more about the service of the nation’s veterans. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams congratulated Jacob on his fine entry. She said the competition was a chance for the community to “understand first-hand the decisive moments that shaped our nation.” Meanwhile, Jacob has plans to chronicle his father’s life in Iraq in a journal. “Us teenagers get it easy,” he says. “Everything is there for us. “For people through the generations before, it was harder to get ahead.”

Casey-based state Labor MPs Judith Couacaud Graley and Luke Donnellan have come under fire for living about 40 kilometres away from their electorates. Ms Graley, a Narre Warren South MP, said she lived in the bayside town Mt Martha to be close to friends and family. She said she had been re-elected to her seat three times by voters on the back of her “strong record”. Mr Donnellan, who lives in inner-suburb Fitzroy North rather than his Narre Warren North seat, confirmed via a spokesman that he didn’t live in the electorate, but offered no further explanation. Eastern Victoria Liberal MP Edward O’Donohue accused the two parliamentarians of treating their electorates with “contempt”. “Judith Graley in the past has promised to move into her electorate. Why hasn’t she?” Mr O’Donohue said. The issue came to light after a report in Fairfax Media on 21 February.

26 February 1917 Win the war The need for men Arranged with the idea of concentrating attention upon the vital necessity of men coming forward to fill the gaps in the Australian divisions at the front, the Win the War procession on Saturday was strikingly calculated to achieve its purpose. As a procession, it was magnificent. Thousands of enthusiastic helpers put a wealth of devoted effort into gorgeous displays; thousands of others marched or lent their cars and lorries in this great organised effort to rouse the hearts of the people and the Win the War spirit. The result measured in actual enlistments on Saturday was below expectations for although 100 men offered their services, only 40 were passed into the army.

16 February 1967 60 years at the keyboard Mrs Adelaide Maude Dyer of Festival Crescent, Keysborough, has 60 years unbroken service to her credit as organist at th historic Greystone Keysborough Methodist Church. She will celebrate her 74th birthday on 24 February and gave up active participation in Sunday services only 18 months ago owing to the ill health of her late husband. Her association, however, does not start as an organist. She was christened at the Keysborough church, attended Sunday school, and married there. Mrs Dyer and her family have taught at Sunday school four generations of the Corrigan family.

Mrs Maude Dyer was born in the ‘Borough’ of the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs William John Trebilco. Mrs Trebilco was the former Miss Sarah Anderson, whose father the late Mr Jacob Anderson migrated to Australia from Norway 115 years ago. On Mrs Dyer’s father’s side of the family there is a 78 years-plus district association.

20 years ago 17 February 1997 Zoning to change Greater Dandenong Council will rezone 33 hectares in Bangholme to allow an industrial development. The council last Monday voted to adopt an amendment to its original planning scheme which would rezone the land to Industrial 3. The council move followed a request by a developer.

5 years ago 27 February 2012 Call to fast-track station safety staff Protective services officers are urgently needed at Dandenong station, says a Greater Dandenong councillor. Roz Blades, who launched meetings with rail operator Metro and Victoria Police over safety concerns last year, said the officers were an essential crime deterrent. A Public Transport Users Association analysis of 2009 crime stats showed Dandenong station had 25 assaults - the second highest number in Melbourne. “People want to know they can catch the train safely and there are PSOs there for them,” Cr Blades said. “We have been notified we’re getting them but we don’t know when.” Her comments came as the first 18 officer recruits were put into service last week.

compassion, love, mercy, tolerance and acceptance should be common goals that we should strive for. Media representations of ‘us’ and ‘them’ should unite us rather than divide us, because together we are strong, together we can make change and together we can pave the way for society to flourish. Kofi Anan, the former United Nations Secretary General, stated that: “We need to promote greater tolerance and understanding among the peoples of the world. “Nothing can be more dangerous to our efforts to build peace and development than a world divided along religious, ethnic or cultural lines. “In each nation, and among all nations, we must work to promote unity based on our shared humanity.” Society needs to understand that in the end we are all the same. “We are one but we are many and from all the lands on earth we come...” The beauty of Australia is all encapsulated in the above verse. We are a multicultural and multiracial society which can be seen all around with the vast amount of amazing food and festivals on offer to us, especially in Melbourne. Born and raised in Australia, religious and racial tolerance was embedded into me not only by parents but also during my schooling. Taking pride in one’s identity, culture and race is not to be feared but rather embraced as we learn so much from others which broadens and enlightens our own minds. It does not mean that we do not love the country that we call home or the people whom we have as neighbours. It enables us to share experiences. Our similarities as people and as ‘team humanity’ far outweigh our differences.

Blast for mayor as group axed By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Casey councillor has slammed mayor Sam Aziz’s critique of the council’s recently disbanded Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee, saying it was a “direction that Australia doesn’t want to go in”. Cr Steve Beardon, who supported the “fantastic” committee from its inception in 2007, said Cr Aziz “certainly didn’t speak for me” or for most councillors on inclusion issues. “I don’t have a problem with same-sex marriage or abortion, and I embrace multiculturalism,” Mr Beardon said. “I spend a lot of time embracing all of the community and I find it extremely rewarding. “Cr Aziz needs to understand some councillors are trying to build bridges.” Casey councillors voted to disband the committee and review its terms of reference at a 17 January meeting. The committee, made of appointed community volunteers and two councillor delegates, had given the council advice on areas such as indigenous culture, religious diversity, age-related, sexual orientation, social and economic disadvantage and disability issues. Cr Beardon said he affirmed people’s right to live the life that they choose, and that every person should be valued, welcomed and have “ownership of this country together as one culture”. “What hurts me is when elected people aren’t welcoming,” he said. “That’s the direction that Australia doesn’t want to go in.” Cr Aziz said the committee was being “revitalised” because he’d received “negative feedback”. He accused some committee members of pursuing “strong political agendas interfering with the machinations of the committee”. Some members were focusing on “peripheral, meaningless issues” such as the State Government’s Safe Schools program, he said. “I don’t think (the Safe Schools issue) is a healthy way to spend their time. “It’s not something the council administers and necessarily agrees with. It’s a State Government issue.” The committee was better to focus on advocating on issues such as disability access to footpaths,

As you drive past the Bunjil Place site now, you will notice the building is starting to look more whole. Steve Beardon has spoken out for Casey’s disbanded Access and Inclusion Committee roads and buildings, he said. Cr Aziz said he couldn’t promise if sexual orientation issues would be still covered by the new committee. “We would have to wait for the report back to council.” Committee member Leanne Petrides said she didn’t know why the committee was disbanded but hoped to be able to re-apply to its next incarnation. “I hadn’t heard any concerns about decisions we’ve made or the way the committee was going at all. “There were people from diverse cultural backgrounds. We had a good mix of men and women of all ages” The Cranbourne Information and Support Service executive director said the committee had worked closely with the council on facilities such as Livvi’s Place disability-accessible playground and an Aboriginal community gathering place in Doveton. It had also advocated on access to footpaths and parking bays, and ageing positively initiatives. Casey connected-communities manager Jo Smale said it was timely to review the committee’s role, given the “resounding” support for community inclusion in last year’s Casey Next survey. The review outcome is expected to be reported to the council in April. Ms Smale said the council would then seek expressions of interest from prospective committee members.

As the iconic design becomes clear, you can start to imagine the final building view. The installation of exterior facades including glass windows, roof steel and sheets, have begun to complete the look of this exciting community precinct. In the last few weeks work has also continued inside the building, including; • Plasterboard patching and sanding in the basement • Wall insulation inserted in the studio • Noggins and framing for library walls • Continued plastering of office meeting rooms • Erecting scaffolding in the theatre to enable the internal fit out.

The exterior glass facade is installed.

About $10,000 of free fresh fruit, vegetables and dairy produce was given out to families in Doveton on 24 February. The second Farm to Family Day held in Doveton supplied bags of food to about 250 families. The Salvation Army Dandenong’s Project Hope manager John Farquharson said the giveaway would be a boost to battling households. He told of an African new arrival and single mother of four who said last year’s event gave her family “something good” for the weekend. “If only there were more,” she said. The event was supported by Bulla Foods, Foodbank Victoria and The Salvation Army.

Council vote on rate cap By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey residents’ rates will rise by no more than two per cent in 2017-’18, after councillors voted to not seek a rate cap variation. According to a council report, the council did not have an “immediate financial need for a higher rates rise but was likely to apply for a variation in future years. It however claimed that the State Governmentimposed rate capping regime would cause a $180 million infrastructure gap over the next decade for new kindergartens, community centres and sports grounds. “Operating in a growth area, council has a long-term need to seek rates above the imposed

rate cap, as a rate cap does not allow council to deliver the infrastructure and services our growing community expects. Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association claimed victory in its “ongoing campaign against excessive rate rises. In a statement, it said the council’s claimed infrastructure black-hole was scaremongering and a “warped version of reality. “It is scaremongering, based on a flawed notion that if there is a shortage of council income the only solution is to increase rates, CRRA president Arvo Talvik said. “Now that there are a few new faces on council who are willing to speak out against excessive rate rises, it seems that the mayor and the CEO of Casey no longer have free reign on their endless

Cop shop stays closed at night

quest for higher rates. Mr Talvik said Casey’s $250,000 application for a variation to the Essential Services Commission failed, yet the council remained in a strong financial position. Mayor Sam Aziz said the CRRA assertions were “laughable. “They have no idea, no influence and no understanding of the budget process. Cr Aziz said the council had not required a variation because it had been assisted by $8 million in state infrastructure grants in late 2016. “There’s still a black hole that’s been filled in 2017-’18 thanks to a few State Government grants. “There’s still a problem in future years if we’re not supported by government grants.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Endeavour Hills Police Station’s weekendnight closure is continuing beyond its three-month trial period for further evaluation. Opposition police spokesman Edward O’Donohue told State Parliament on 21February that many people in Casey were interested in whether the trial closure would be permanent. Mr O’Donohue noted that Casey had just three police stations in the “enormous municipality and its residents were concerned by the rise in gang violence, car-jackings and home invasions. The municipality had been identified by the Police Association of Victoria as an area needing “one of the largest injections of additional frontline police, he said. “I think it is perplexing to many residents of Endeavour Hills that, with such strong population growth and such an increase in crime, the opening hours of the police station would be cut. “That trial concluded earlier this month but there has been no public statement - or not one that I can discern from the minister - about the outcome of that trial. Since early November, the police station has closed at 5pm - rather than 11pm - on weekends. Its August start had been delayed due to a community and local council outcry. At the time, police said the move would free up police officers to patrol and respond to crime at night. Police said an earlier review found low numbers of public attendances and phone calls to the station, particularly on weekends. A Victoria Police spokeswoman said police were completing the evaluation of the trial. “The hours will continue to run whilst the evaluation is completed, she said.

Gymnastics clubs takes the lead in getting involved By Victoria Stone-Meadows Endeavour Hills Leisure Centre and Berwick Leisure Centre had their dedication to inclusive gymnastics recognised at the Gymnastics Victoria Awards Night recently. Endeavour Hills Leisure Centre was awarded the Inclusive Leader Club of the Year honour for making sure everyone has the chance to get involved in gymnastics. Through the clubs’ Access All Abilities Gymnastics Program, children with a wide range of physical and intellectual disabilities have had the opportunity to learn and develop in a safe and inclusive atmosphere. Endeavour Hills also won the award in 2014 however this year the centre was also nominated for Large Club of the Year. Gymnastics co-ordinator at Endeavour Hills Leisure Centre Monica Ellis said the program is designed to cater for all kinds of children who were interested in gymnastics. “We focus on fundamental movement patterns and locomotive skills to build both physical and mental co-ordination and strength, all while having a fun and interactive experience, she said. “The program’s success is due to our coaches

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Freeze-dried pet treats By Casey Neill Two chefs are freeze-drying quality emu, kangaroo, beef, lamb and seafood in Dandenong - and feeding it to dogs. Freeze Dry Australia opened this month, and is struggling to keep up with demand for its healthy pet treats. “We’re the first freeze-dried pet food in Australia,” director Daniel Schuetz said. He and fellow director Tony Phelan got the business idea from a game of golf. “Tony’s friend owns FuzzYard pet products. He has a lot of overseas distributors,” Mr Schuetz said. “They’ve asked him about freeze-dried food. “Then me and Tony played golf, and he asked me about freeze dried food. “Tony and I are both chefs by background, that’s why FuzzYard asked Tony and Tony asked me. “We went to trade school together 20 years ago. “But I had no idea about freeze-dried food.” So they did some research and decided to give it a go. “We already had the sales, the clientele and the orders,” Mr Schuetz said. “They were placing orders before we even had the facility.” Freeze Dry Australia has five different product ranges - emu, kangaroo, beef, lamb and seafood for dogs and cats. “We did our research and found out kangaroo and emu are high in protein - the highest protein of all meats,” Mr Schuetz said. “Everything we put in is to benefit the dog or the cat. “Lots of snacks are not very good for the pets. “Everything we use is natural.” There are no preservatives, artificial flavours or fillers involved. “Our products are 95 per cent meat,” Mr

Freeze Dry Australia directors Tony Phelan and Daniel Schuetz with quality assurance officer Lomu. Schuetz said. “Because we freeze dry it, in theory it’s supposed to last 20 years. “It freezes the product then sucks all the liquid out of it then turns it into a wafer. “It’s like astronaut food. “If you add hot water to it, it constitutes back to normal mincemeat.” The products are treats rather than meals, but more substantial offerings could be around the corner. “We go through a tonne and a half a week of meat at the moment,” Mr Schuetz said. “We need to get up to at least three in the next couple of months. “We’ve got the buyers; we just can’t keep up with production. “We’re waiting for machinery to streamline the process.

“Hopefully, by the end of February it will be all here and set up.” For now, Mr Schuetz, Mr Phelan and a few family members are doing the hard work by hand. “Once we streamline the process, we’ll go out and we might even start a second label for supermarkets and stuff like that,” Mr Schuetz said. “At the moment, it’s just for premium pet shops. “We’ve just sent out our first two orders for Australia and we’re packing for China now. “It’ll be in China, hopefully Japan, and Korea.” Freeze Dry Australia received a Greater Dandenong Business Grant at Dandenong Civic Centre on 6 December alongside four other businesses. It included up to $8000 plus business mentoring and marketing valued at about $2000. The Journal will profile each of the recipients.

In Brief Women’s Day speaker Fresh from a stoush with Senator Jacqui Lambie on ABC’s Q&A, Yassmin Abdel-Magied will lead International Women’s Day celebrations in Springvale. She’s the guest speaker for the SEBN and Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Showcasing Women breakfast on Thursday 9 March. Ms Abdel-Magied is an Australian-born mechanical engineer, social advocate, writer, petrol head and the Queensland Young Australian of the Year 2015. She founded Youth Without Borders at age 16, has delivered a number of TED Talks, is now hosting her own ABC television series called Australia Wide, and has completed her first memoir. The Showcasing Women breakfast will run from 7am to 9am on Thursday 9 March at Highways, corner Princes Highway and Corrigan Road, Springvale. Bookings close on Friday 3 March. Region’s bright future Small to medium sized businesses have opportunity aplenty in Greater Dandenong, according to an industry expert. KPMG Enterprise Advisory director Michael Alf said the company “saw the south-east region clearly as a growth region with a lot of opportunities”. He said that while the auto industry was disappearing, smaller businesses left behind were more flexible and were able to take advantage of other opportunities such as exports to China. KPMG, Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce and South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance will host a free informal networking event at The Well, 12 Jayco Drive, Dandenong South, from 5.30pm to 7.30pm on Wednesday 1 March.

Committee president Bryan Elliott said “there’s definitely been evidence of a couple of attempted break-ins” to the storage shed and that the new lights would deter loiterers and give kids more space to play.

Springvale South and Dandenong TattsLotto players are among 40 to share a $1.5 million division one prize. The group syndicate members will land $36,669 per share from the Saturday 18 February TattsLotto Superdraw. Southvale Newsagency in Springvale South sold four of the 40 shares, and Dandenong Plaza Lotto in Dandenong sold three. Consultation about a replacement pool for Dandenong Oasis has attracted State Government cash. It came to light last year that Greater Dandenong Council was looking at new sites because the Cleeland Street facility was near the end of its useful life. Business group manager Paul Kearsley confirmed at the Monday 13 February council

meeting that councillors would be briefed on moving forward with community consultation later this month. Members are wanted for a new sustainability committee to help Greater Dandenong Council shape policies, and drive service and program delivery. Greater Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti said the Sustainability Reference Committee would also include government and business representatives. Nominations close on Monday 27 March. Visit www.greaterdandenong.com. Two new recycling initiatives will hit Greater Dandenong next month. To take part in Homecycle, residents can put clothes and books in a bag and place them in their recycling bin the day after their recycling bin collection day between 20 March and 1 April. They can take up to 15 larger items to a pop-up drive-through recycling event which will be held between 8am and 4pm on Saturday 4 March at Greaves Reserve in Dandenong and the Springvale Customer Service Centre in Springvale.

Business profile

Fresh, fun, modern tastes of India By Casey Neill

Samosas stuffed with green pea and potato. 164928 “I keep it simple in a chilled space, providing guests with good food, good drinks, and a relaxed atmosphere,” he said. Norman is starting over-28s Bollwood nights every Friday with a grand set menu for $28 per person. On Sundays he hosts a bottomless lunch for $18, which he said was already proving popular with locals. Norman said the “do not miss list on the menu” included chicken ribs tossed in mustard, curryleaf and bell pepers, beera chicken tikka, fish amritsa, butter chicken, rogini lamb and goat chettinad. Modern Indian Restaurant is at 182 Bridge Road, Keysborough, and is open for dinner Wednesday to Monday, 5pm to 10pm. Take away, home delivery to surrounding suburbs, and catering services are available.

Norman Fosberry says there is a big need for his type of restaurant. 164928

Chef Norman Fosberry is reinventing Indian favourites and adding a dash of fun to dining. He left a Nando’s franchise in St Kilda’s Acland Street to open Modern Indian Restaurant in Keysborough late last year. “I felt there was a need for a restaurant like this in the south-eastern suburbs,” he said. “All the fine-dining restaurants are in the city, but I live in the south-eastern suburbs and buy fresh produce at Dandenong Market. “If you after a classic Indian meal with fine service, this is the place to go.” Norman said he was a pioneer of tandoori Indian cooking and started his first restaurant in 1989 in Elsternwick. He moved to Brighton opposite the Brighton Baths and Norman’s Indian Restaurant earned him the title of The Curry King. Norman then took Indian cuisine to regional Victoria, opening Indian Dreams in Traralgon, Morwell and Sale. He’ll be at this year’s Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. “I worked with Neil Perry at the OzHarvest last year in Sydney,” he said. “It’s a charity event for the homeless.” Norman said Modern Indian Restaurant was known for a specialised cuisine that was very popular in India, Singapore and the Middle East. “It’s the new rage in which cooking techniques vary from authentic cooking methods to the infusion of new flavours, using new world ingredients and presenting the food with a Western twist,” he said. He’s brought dry ice and sous-vide into his kitchen, keeping a modern fine-dining style front of mind. He promises spice, bigger and bolder flavours, lots of layering and an authentic taste. Norman’s aim is to make modern Indian food more accessible at a better price.

FOR FOUNDER FRANK, IT WAS ALL ABOUT LOCATION This year heralds a remarkable milestone for the real estate industry throughout the south-east. The companies originally established by Frank Facey in Dandenong in 1917 will this year celebrate a century of success. Such an achievement is exceptional given the historical instabilities of the early 1900s and subsequent social and economic challenges throughout the decades. The success and growth of Frank Facey Real Estate has been influential in facilitating the early and current development of the City of Casey and Cardinia shire. In the early 1900s, Frank Facey was an accomplished carriage builder in Dandenong. Back then, the region was primarily broad pastoral runs with commercial and business needs being met by an emergent township. By 1917, Frank Facey was so motivated by the infinite potential

for growth in the south-east that he took the intuitive decision to delve into the world of real estate. He purchased his first real estate business in that year and it was this inspired event which mapped out a successful future for his children and grandchildren. Frank Facey was a man of integrity and high morals. He became a sworn valuer and a Justice of the Peace. He then continued his personal accomplishments to achieve presidency of the Real Estate Agents and Auctioneers Frankston/Mordialloc branch and was appointed to the central council in 1935. As World War II came to an end, the region experienced an influx of migration and commerce. Blacksmiths and carriage builders made way for motor vehicles and modern industry. The Dandenong regional hospital was built, General Motors

Holden, Heinz and International Harvester all became established in the region, creating exciting employment opportunities and the need for residential development. Frank Facey had positioned himself in the right place at the right time and with his keen eye for business and strong values, he was instrumental in initiating positive change for the region. Frank Facey’s early success continued through the generations and today his original company has broadened its horizons to include operations in Dandenong, Mulgrave, Endeavour Hills, Berwick, Narre Warren and Pakenham. These businesses now include First National Neilson Partners, First National Hall and Partners, Parklea and Facey Industrial Commercial. For more on the Facey dynasty and the company’s centenary celebrations see this week’s Pakenham-Berwick Gazette.

27 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 27 February, 2017

SPORT Fletcher pounds the boundaries By Nicholas Creely DDCA TWENTY 20 GRAND FINAL REVIEW Yet another piece of Twenty20 silverware has been added to the glittering cabinet at Buckley Ridges, with the Bucks dismantling Cranbourne in the Dandenong District decider at Park Oval on Wednesday evening. A healthy crowd ventured out to see two of the competition’s heavyweights battle it out, and on a track naturally conducive to batting, the Bucks did not hesitate to bat. The Eagles must have felt in control in the early stages, with Blade Baxter, a pace-man from St Kilda Cricket Club, snaring the wicket of the dangerous Daniel Watson (9). But then it became the Luke Fletcher (99 not out) show, with the Buckley Ridges’ star Englishman playing one of the great knocks, blasting boundary after boundary, as the crowd ducked for cover. He even took down Steve Spoljaric (0/55), who was going at an economy rate of 3.5 per over for the entire tournament, and Matt Chasemore (0/45), who has also been brilliantly economic all tournament. And although Fletcher could not walk off Park Oval with the three-figures, it was sheer brutality and precision at its finest. Maybe it was an innings waiting to happen, and although it wasn’t as mind-boggling as Daniel Watson’s famous 193 in a Twenty20 only a few years back against Springvale South, it was a freakish innings. When breaking down the innings, his numbers are unbelievable - it took just 49 deliveries to get to 99, with 10 sixes and four boundaries, with 76 of his runs coming in boundaries.

Luke Fletcher stands and delivers. 164599 And there were others who stood tall and brutalized the Eagles’ bowlers - Susantha Pradeep, who has quite arguably been the player of the tournament, calmly knocked around another 44 runs with Fletcher. Suren Ekanayake (46 not out) then excited the crowd with some lusty hitting in the last eight overs of the innings, as the Bucks reached an imperious 2/213 off their 20 overs.

Picture: GARY SISSONS And if the game was in doubt when Lucas Ligt and Matt Chasemore strode out to bat, it was certainly all over when Chasemore (5) and his skipper Spoljaric (0) fell in consecutive balls, with Watson (4/20) breaking the game open with some stellar bowling. Watson then picked up Blade Baxter (1) shortly after, leaving the Eagles hanging by a thread at 3/17.

Edwards leaves his ‘home away from home’ club By Nicholas Creely There was a turning point in Lincoln Edwards’ cricket career in which he realised he could truly make it in the Victorian Premier Cricket topgrade. Playing for Guildford as its overseas player in the UK over the 2015/16 off-season, the young batsman flourished, scoring 805 runs in the season at an average of 47.35. When he returned home for the start of this season seemingly with the Melbourne Cricket Club, rejuvenated and eager to step-up as a Premier batsman, he made a choice he never thought he’d make - he left the club he had spent half-adecade playing for. “I loved playing at Melbourne and never really had the thought of leaving, to be honest. “People started challenging me, I guess, to see how far I could go and I ended up personally wanting to give first XI cricket a real red-hot crack. “The change of scenery in England really motivated me to come home and give Melbourne cricket another go,” he told the Journal. But LJ, as he is known by his cricketing teammates, left his beloved club and headed down the highway to Shepley Oval to join Dandenong, a club that was looking to rebound after a lean twoyear run. “I was talking to a few clubs last year but even when they approached me I was still keen to stay at Melbourne, but when I found out Nick Speak was coaching Dandenong, it was a turning point and a major turning point in my decision. “I felt some comfort going to Dandenong knowing Speaky was in charge,” he said. When he walked into the club, he was seen as mostly a handy depth player. But entering the Victorian Premier Cricket finals, where the Panthers are locked into the topfour, LJ has become an unheralded star, a player capable of batting in any situation. “Dandenong has given me the opportunity and responsibility, which is great, and it’s similar to what I experienced over in England for Guildford. “I think that’s definitely improved my game and made me want to contribute for the team on a regular basis,” he said. 28 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 27 February, 2017

Some resistance was then provided by Ligt (32) and Jake Harrington (23), but when that partnership was eventually broken, it became purely a waiting game for the Bucks. The Eagles were eventually dismissed for 137 off 19.4 overs. Apart from Watson, Wes Nicholas (3/19), Matthew Goodwright (2/31) and Lukas Hoogenboom (1/22) were all dangerous. Buckley Ridges have now extraordinarily got seven Twenty20 premierships against their name, in an incredible decade of white-ball cricket. Both teams will now turn their attention to the Turf 1 season, where both clubs are well and truly in the running for the premiership. DDCA Twenty20 Premiers 2016/17 Buckley Ridges Daniel Watson, 7 matches, 184 runs at 30.7, HS 119, 7 wickets at 16.00, economy 6.3 Susantha Pradeep, 6 matches, 287 runs at 47.8, HS 83, 2 wickets at 12.5, economy 8.3 Luke Fletcher, 7 matches, 228 runs at 45.6, HS 99, 4 wickets at 26.3, economy 5.00 Suren Ekanayake, 6 matches, 110 runs at 22.00, HS 46 Jayson Hobbs, 6 matches, 70 runs at 17.5, HS 29 Troy Aust (capt & wk), 7 matches, 84 runs at 16.8, HS 31 Rajith Jayathunga, 4 matches, 69 runs at 34.5 Matthew Goodwright, 6 matches, 13 runs at 13.00, HS 8, 6 wickets at 22.5, economy 8.4 Hussain Ali, 6 matches, 21 runs, no average, HS 12, 11 wickets at 11.1, economy 6.4 Lukas Hoogenboom, 6 matches, did not bat, 10 wickets at 12.6, economy 6.5 Wes Nicholas, 7 matches, did not bat, 10 wickets at 10.5, economy 5.5

Recruits set to lift standards By Nicholas Creely

Lincoln Edwards has flourished since joining Dandenong. 165017

Picture: ROB CAREW

The Rowville Hawks are truly buzzing down at Seebeck Oval with an extremely busy off-season putting them in prime position to claim their maiden Division 1 premiership. Current Eastern Football League Division 1 Chandler Medallist Cameron Manuel has put pen to paper for the Hawks once again, while classy midfielder Mat Suckling, originally from Norwood in the SANFL, will also turn out. The club welcomes seven former VFL players to the club in 2017 with Michael Sikora, James Wilsen, Jake Dermott, Jordan Bastinac, Jake Kidd, Jackson Anderson and Jayden Cyster signing on. Hawks Football Director Mark Hamilton said that the signings were exciting for the football club, with all of the new recruits set to lift the standards of the playing group. “Last year we felt we are as good as anybody, but we also felt that on the big stage we were light physically and needed more maturity on our list - we feel that these additions will add these qualities,” he told the Journal. “We have brought in some bigger bodies and some good ball-users, but we also expect other guys at the club to step up.” Sikora, 28, in particular, is a massive signing for the club, literally, with the 206cm ruckman set to add vital experience after successful stints at VFL level with Frankston and Williamstown. Star player Jay Kinder returns to the club after a year away from the game, with the club expected to announce further signings in the coming weeks.

Spoljaric’s magic wand can’t save the Eagles By Nicholas Creely DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW ROUND 10 (DAY 2) Nobody saw this coming, but it seems the reigning Turf 1 champ Cranbourne are finished for good this season, going down fighting in a thriller to Springvale South. Chasing a monster 313 to retain its place inside the top-four, the Eagles needed to get a lot of things right. And when Matt Chasemore (13) walked back to the pavilion at 4/72, the Eagles looked gone. But the skipper Steven Spoljaric (123) played a vintage and defining knock, guiding his side out of a deep hole with utter class. Combining with Jake Harrington (87), the Eagles fell agonizingly short by four runs when Rajitha Priyan (2/46) found a way through to claim a stunning victory. The Bloods were well served by not only Priyan, but Tim Ford (2/57) and Craig Slocombe (2/40), while in the field they managed three-run outs. Heinz-Southern Districts have pulled off one of the most monumental Turf 1 victories in years, crushing Berwick’s final hopes to pieces and in the process catapulted themselves into the top-four. The day started off calmly enough, with the Cobras resuming play at 0/7, 186-runs short of victory. After losing two early wickets, Cobras skipper Matthew Cox (69) played a wonderful knock, guiding them to first-innings points before aggressively declaring at 7/200. But instead of just grinding out the day and preventing further damage, the Bears went on the attack, and looked dangerous early when Nathan Pilon spanked 40 off 17 balls. Kaushyla Weeraratne (5/61) then tore apart the middle-order, but the Bears continued to attack and strangely declared on 8/153 off 20 overs. Cox (68 not out) then played an even more special innings and, combined with Michael Davies (28), got the 145-runs required to claim outright, and more importantly a spot in the topfour with a round to play. The Magpies have pushed on with their late season form, and can sleep easier knowing they will now officially remain in Turf 1 next year. After the Magpies made 242 the week previous, Dandy West were skittled for just 100, with Mitchell Shirt (4/27) the star. They were then sent back in, where the Westers reached 1/90 before stumps. Buckley Ridges has continued its golden week with another imperious performance, smashing North Dandenong outright and finally cementing itself in the top-four with a round to go. Already claiming first-innings points last week, Daniel Watson (61 not out from 26 balls) sent the ball flying to all parts, with the Bucks declaring on 7/216 and gaining an 87-run lead. And then Luke Fletcher took over proceedings as he did in the Twenty20 just days prior, taking 5/21 as the Maroons were dismantled for just 58,

Kaushyla Weeraratne starred in an incredible victory by the Cobras. 164040 but at one stage were sitting at an astonishing 9/24. Down at Ben Kavanagh Reserve, Mordialloc has left the door open for a shock top-of-the-table finish, absolute shellacking Parkfield in an utterly dominant outright rout. Resuming at 3/59 in the chase of the Bears’ meager total of 96, the Bloodhounds wasted very little time knocking over the runs, declaring after 52 overs with the score at 8/173. And oh how clinical they were from there, resigning the Parkers to a short 90-minute stay at the crease, rolling them for 49 and earning themselves double-points. Chathura Athukorala (6/21) was virtually unplayable in a stellar performance, while Ian Daniel

(3/15) was typically industrious. The Bloodhounds now sit second on the table with a round to play, while Parkfield are almost a certainty to be relegated to Turf 2 next season. And Dingley has fallen 13 runs short to Hallam-Kalora Park, with the Dingoes brave push for a finals spot ending. Chasing 234, the Dingoes gave an almighty scare to the ladder-leaders, before Leigh Booth (4/38), Jordan Hammond (3/48) and Jagveer Hayer (2/46) managed to get the job done. The Hawks remain top-of-the-table with a round to go, but have two sides still in the running to pinch their spot as minor premiers.

Rangers triumph after a close call By Nicholas Creely A fast-starting Dandenong Rangers have held off a fierce challenge from the Perth Lynx, winning 73-66 in game one of their three-match finals series in front of a packed Dandenong crowd on Saturday night. In what has been a testing and at times soul-searching month and a half for Larissa Anderson and her team, there was no hiding in this one. It was a hot start for the Rangers, who seemed spurred on early, jumping out to a 20-14 lead at the first-break. Their electric ball-movement and accurate shooting was on display, with the Lynx barely keeping up for the majority of the quarter. And from that they were inspired, jumping out to 22-point half-time lead before extending it early in the third to 25 with some electric three-point shooting, especially from co-captain Steph Cumming. It seemed the game would turn into an embarrassing one for the visitors, as the Rangers looked to further stamp their domination. But unwilling to be dictated to, the Lynx suddenly found the mojo that got them into the top-four, roaring back to life as the crowd grew just a tad more silent. The Lynx then completely outplayed the Rangers 26-12 in the final-term, but with the weight-of-the-world on their shoulders the Rangers steadied to register a crucial yet satisfying victory. On an individual level, Cumming played arguably her best game of the entire season, shooting 25 points, including 20 in the first-half, and five crucial rebounds. Nat Novosel (15 points) had ice in her veins at times. She scored a crucial three-pointer to stop the Lynx in their tracks midway through a crucial time in the final-term, while the usual contributors in Sara Blicavs (11 points) and Jacinta Kennedy (8 points) were industrious. Cumming said post-match that it was a really relieving victory, but one that was special to all the players and staff at the Rangers. “I’m absolutely rapt - it would have been devastating to lose this one to be honest,” she said. “Everyone was really pumped up and ready for the game, and we are very, very happy we got this win. “Hopefully our next game isn’t as close and we can come out with a big win.” Despite the loss, the Lynx would have taken significant confidence from their last half despite the eventual loss. The Rangers will travel over to Perth on Friday night to tackle the Lynx in game two of their series. If the play-offs get to the third-match, Dandenong will be hosting the last game

Panthers chase leather against the classy Saints By Nicholas Creely Dandenong has a mountain to climb if it wants to finish top-two, with St Kilda posting a massive total at Harry Trott Oval. A top-four finish is a guarantee, but a homefinal is not, and despite being a flag favorite the Panthers have been plagued by some inconsistent form in previous rounds. And with Justin Butterfield still missing through injury, and James Pattinson on state duties, the Panthers’ bowling attack once again looked quite thin, with a raft of youngsters shouldering the load. Interestingly, the Panthers actually sent the Saints in on their home deck, a decision they may regret. After picking up an early scalp to have the Saints at 1/18, Lachlan Holmes (140) and Damon Egan (115) combined for an incredible 242-run partnership, completely dominating the young Panthers. Both Holmes and Egan have alternated be-

tween First XI and Second XI cricket this season, but both batsman were dominant against an attack that is lacking a bit of firepower. Despite toiling hard, it was tough work for the bowlers, and through a couple of late cameos, the Saints reached 6/335 before electing to send the Panthers to face the music before stumps. James Nanopoulos (3/71) was the pick of the bowlers, while Peter Cassidy (3/62) provided some solid support as he always does. And with ten overs to go and with the damage looking to be kept to a minimum, the Panthers started solidly through skipper Tom Donnell and Brett Forsyth. Donnell (6) was then caught off some clever bowling from Michael Beer (1/8) right on the stroke of stumps, a major blow for the visitors. The Panthers are 1/24, and looking to hold onto a top-two finish, and are likely to welcome back James Pattinson to bat next week. There is plenty left in the shed however for the Panthers, with Cam Forsyth, Brett Forsyth, Pattinson and Lincoln Edwards still to come next

week and all in terrific touch with the bat. Meanwhile, Casey-South Melbourne has had a horror first day in their clash with Prahran, and as a result has squandered their chance at a shock top-four finish. Sent in by the True Blues, the Swans lost four early wickets to be sitting at an ugly 4/22, before Jordan Wyatt (21) and the in-form Michael Wallace (49) scrapped their way to 126. And a devastating century to Adam Bull (103) ended any chance of another against-the-odds victory for the Swans, with the True Blues reaching 8/210 by stumps, and with first-innings points in the bag. Brendan Rose, Jackson Fry, Lachlan Sperling and Dylan Hadfield have two wickets apiece for the Swans who will need to dig deep to salvage something from the wreckage when play resumes this weekend for day two.

Winner shows the right attitude Angela Langton’s exciting youngster Rig Fifty Five made it three wins in a row by taking out the Judy Hayley Memorial at Sandown Park on Thursday night. Drawing his fourth red box in as many races proved pivotal for the son of former champ Oaks Road, beginning as well as he’s begun in his career and powering to the lead through the first turn. Race favourite and fastest qualifier Aston Gisle followed Rig Fifty Five through to camp behind him as they entered the back straight, but she had no answer for the front runner as Rig Fifty Five stormed away to win by seven lengths in a slick 29.41. “He’s from a terrific litter and has a great attitude towards racing,” Langton said after the race. “I think having four red boxes in a row has really seen him grow in confidence, he’s really starting to put it together now. “The two (Aston Gisle) missed it a little bit tonight so it gave him a bit of room early and allowed him to begin a little bit quicker than normal. But he is starting to begin a little better having that run with box 1s so it’s been great for him.” Rig Fifty Five has now won five of his 16 career starts, and having just turned two years of age, Langton is confident of further improvement. In fact, a tilt at the $210,000 group 2 Launching Pad now beckons. “We’ll look at getting a ticket for the Launching Pad now for him. He’s the same litter as (dual group 1 finalist) Hit The Highway, the whole litter has plenty of ability. He’s still learning and he’s really starting to hit his straps so we’ll look to the Launching Pad for him now.” The Judy Hayley Memorial is the feature event on the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club’s Shades of Greyhound Girls Night Out and is restricted to lady trainers only. Named in honour of the Melbourne Cup winning trainer who lost her battle with cancer in 2012, it has quickly established its place as one of the sport’s most sought after races.

here tonight would love to win the race. Judy was a terrific lady - it’s an honour to get a runner in the final, to win it is really special.”

Cobras shake-up leads to new coach appointment By Nicholas Creely It’s the beginning of a new era for the Sandown Cobras who are looking to put the past behind them and move into the 2017 season with vigour. With just six wins in the previous two seasons, including just one last year, the club has transformed itself off-field, firstly with the signing of former Brunswick coach Ange Sammartino to the helm for the upcoming season and a shake-up at board level. On-field Sammartino is uniting the fledging football club and looking to rebuild from the ground up, albeit slowly, and said that the pre-season has been fairly inconsistent, but is confident the club can turn the corner. “Our pre-season started way back in early November with six weeks of training leading in to Christmas before having a month off and coming back together in mid-January,” he told the Journal. “While the number of ‘different heads’ on the track has exceeded 60, we have had a consistent 10 to 15 turning up to each session however not

always the same heads. “It’s been difficult to establish routines and game plans so the main focus has been on getting the guys fit and helping them to understand the value of each possession that they get. “We spend a fair bit of time in every session doing basic skill work to ensure that players work on polishing their disposals in order to enable us to maintain possession.” An approach Sammartino has decided to undertake this season is to not look to the past, but rather look forward and think about what the club can do in the future. “2016 has been read its rites and we are looking forward,” he said. “The strength of the club will be how it works towards rebuilding. “So far in 2017 they’ve got a new coaching panel, a new committee and chairperson and, most importantly, we’ve got a core group that are prepared to lay the foundations that will see the club improve over the next two to three years. “Let’s face it, there is no quick fix and we all un-

derstand that it’s going to take time to repair the occurrences of the past, but we’re banding together and the club is a really great place to be around. “As for this year, I refuse to set any great expectations. Let’s get ourselves right on and off the field and build on whatever we achieve in 2018.” In terms of the Cobras’ coaching structure, they have added Phil Dickson, someone who Sammartino is confident will have a major impact on the playing group, but have maintained the majority of their 2016 coaching staff. “Obviously I’m new but, other than that, I’ve been more than happy for the guys that were around in 2016 to stay on board as they bring player knowledge to the table. “The Club has also appointed Phil Dickson to the role of Director of Coaching and his knowledge will be invaluable,” he said. The Cobras will kick off their 2017 campaign against Lyndale on 8 April. Anyone interested in playing for the club can contact Zain Machfud through emailing sandowncobrasfc@gmail.com.

MOTORING Bold Toyota’s stunning new style On all other variants, the CVT also offers Mmode for manual access to seven simulated gears, giving a sense of response and control similar to a traditional transmission. All C-HR variants offer two drive modes, in addition to Normal, that vary throttle response, steering weight and CVT strategies - favouring fuel economy in Eco mode and driving performance in Sport mode. A strong focus on fuel consumption has resulted in combined-cycle economy from 6.3 litres/100km and CO2 emissions from 141 grams/km. CVT-equipped models can also be specified with Toyota’s Dynamic Torque Control, an electromagnetic all-wheel-drive system that can direct up to half of the engine’s torque to the rear axle. C-HR is built on a Toyota New Generation Architecture (TNGA) platform that offers fluent, engaging driving behaviour due to its exceptional rigidity, low centre of gravity and optimised suspension layouts. Space-efficient MacPherson strut front and dou-

ble-wishbone rear suspensions, newly developed for C-HR, promote crisp driving with hatchback-like handling and smooth, accurate steering. TNGA also enabled designers to produce a dynamic-looking car with low roof and bonnet heights without compromising headroom. The Toyota C-HR automatic is available for $32,700. Low-end torque, quick response and high efficiency are characteristics of the 1.2-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that is offered for the first time in a Toyota model in Australia. Featuring direct injection and advanced combustion and heat-management technologies, the quiet and smooth engine delivers peak torque from just 1,500rpm through to 4,000rpm and maximum power of 85kW.
